Horsham’s 2017 Big Nibble Local food and drink festival delivers a feast for the senses

Photos by John Lines Last weekend’s Big Nibble, organised by Horsham District Council, attracted thousands of food and drink lovers who were served up a treat for the senses with fantastic tastes, smells, sights and sounds right across Horsham Town Centre.

The Big Nibble launches the month long Horsham District Food & Drink Festival, which features over 100 local produce based businesses and food festi-

vals in Steyning and Horsham.

At the heart of the experience, the Big Nibble Food and Drink Safari market in the Carfax, organised by Horsham Markets

by Food Rocks, presented visitors with a marvellous selection of street food to relish and produce to take home.

Local star chef, Steven Edwards, led a brilliant cast of chefs, who demonstrated their skills and shared their secrets along with a cast of top local restaurant teams and local produce artisans.

New this year, the Gin Veranda, on Saturday, presented talk and taste sessions from Horsham’s own Cabin Pressure Gin, Crates Local Produce, whose own Gin Corner was popular throughout

the weekend, and Piries Bar, who hosted their own gin and local cheese events over the weekend.

Although not Food and Drink related, the guest appearance on Saturday of Transformers’ Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee, in Bishopric, was a great hit.

The Entertainer toy store was delighted by the response and promised more character visits in future.

A Horsham teenager who accidentally embedded an axe in her leg, then gave herself and her friend (who fainted) first aid, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the annual St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes Awards, supported by Laerdal Medical.

Emily Budinger, 16, of Ben Acres, has been shortlisted in the Guy Evans category, which recognises an extraordinary young person, under the age of 18, who has saved a life with first aid or has made an extraordinary first aid achievement (in honour of Guy Evans, who died when first aid might have given him a chance to live).

A-level student Emily was chopping firewood at a camp at Sasamat Lake in Canada in August last year, when her axe made contact with her leg and caused a deep laceration. The Collyer’s Sixth Form pupil explained what happened: “I’d found a good chunk of wood, and began to chop the firewood. I went to take another swing but was startled by a snapping branch and missed the firewood. Suddenly I realised the axe was not on the chopping block. I couldn’t see the blade, either. The axe was inside my leg. It had cut into my shin, buried by an inch or more.”

Emily, who learned first aid as an Army Cadet with Sussex Army Cadet Force, let go of the axe and blood started flowing down her leg. She said: “I could feel myself

begin to go cold. I don’t remember how I had the clarity of mind to lay myself on my back but next thing I knew I was laying on the dirt with my leg raised. I had a bandanna on my wrist, and so I untied it and pushed it into my wound.

Everything was on auto-pilot, I remember that my only thoughts were making sure I didn’t lose consciousness. I compressed the wound and yelled for a first aider.

“After what felt like forever my three friends turned the corner and stopped in their tracks. Suddenly one of them went down hard onto the ground; they’d fainted. The other friends just looked between us both, obviously overwhelmed.

We had done a basic first aid course the day before, and so I knew they both knew the recovery position. I told one of them to run off and get our leader, and the other to put the fainter in the recovery position.

At first, he was too confused to remember, but after a bit of coaxing he remembered. I also told him to check her breathing if she didn’t come around. Luckily, a minute or so later she woke up.

“I was beginning to feel myself go into shock. I could feel my pulse in my ears, and I was beginning to feel myself get panicky. I tried to reason with myself, saying that the fact I was even thinking coherently enough to think of this was a sign I was going to

be okay. But I could feel myself losing blood and the pain of the wound was starting to burn and stab ferociously. I asked if I was looking pale. I checked my pulse and kept breathing deeply.”

Thankfully, a youth leader from the camp arrived on scene, and he began to dress the wound. As the group were in the middle of the woods, there was a possibility they would have to canoe to an evacuation point. Luckily, they received the news an off-roader was on its way to drive Emily to the nearest hospital.

Emily was taken into A and E and she was released from hospital that day. She added: “Looking back, I suppose it was a surprise I remained calm and remembered my training. I believe my actions in first aid should be accredited to the first class training I received from Sussex Army Cadet Force, and a good dose of adrenaline.

“I’m excited to be nominated for this award and to attend the ceremony in London; it is most unexpected.”

Emily is one of five finalists in the ‘Guy Evans’ category and will attend the exclusive awards ceremony at the Hilton London Bankside on 28 September.

The annual Everyday Heroes Awards, supported by Laerdal, celebrates the nation’s life savers, honouring community heroes, organisations and members of the public who have used first aid to help others.

The star-studded awards will be hosted by TV presenter and bestselling author, Katie Piper, who, as an acid attack survivor and a parent, understands the importance of having life saving skills.

Elizabeth Harper, London and South regional director for St John Ambulance, said: “Everyday Heroes is the very essence of what St John Ambulance is about – ordinary people doing extraordinary things through first aid. We believe that no one should suffer for a lack of first aid, and the actions of our finalists prove that first aid really can be the difference between life and death.”

The Little Nibble Children’s Food Festival, sponsored by Leaders Estate Agents, entertained children and their families with a range of activities, including: “Messy Church does Science”

Places for People and Horsham Community Responders also had stalls with activities and helpful advice, and Horsham library offered a foodie singalong and foodie stories.

Also new this year, the Big Busk Horsham Street Arts festival saw ten local acts play five ‘stages’ around the town, vying for the public to vote for their favourite artist. An enthusiastic Horsham audience gave the artists great support and huge cheers rang out as the winners ‘Upbeat Rockabilly’, an all-girl dance troupe, received their trophy. Giggling Squid, the Thai Restaurant in East Street, kindly provided a winner’s meal prize.

Councillor Gordon Lindsay, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, is keen for the council to get visitors’ feedback on the event, of which she said: “I thought the two days were amazing. The Big Nibble is a wonderful event for Horsham Town Centre and an excellent launch for our month-long District Food & Drink Festival. This year’s Big Nibble had a number of new ingredients, as we seek to make it an event with greatest possible appeal. It was great to see so many new businesses joining the regular participants to continue the festival’s development.

Sugar swaps in our schools continue to be a success

West Sussex County Council have announced that children heading back to primary school this September will have, on average, 65% less sugar in their school meals than three years ago, which equates to over 2kg per pupil per year.

A total of 30,000 children will benefit from the innovative sugar reduction programme, which has won a national Public Health England award.

Since WSCC first launched the scheme in October 2014, primary school children have seen their sugar intake gradually reduced from 18.5g to 6.6g per day by swapping out sugary items with fruit and yoghurts, reducing portion sizes and taking excess sugar out of recipes.

Amanda Jupp, County Council Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “As a parent, I know how hard it is to get children to eat healthily, especially in the world we live in now. Not having to worry about this when your child is having a meal at school, is excellent and something I am very proud we have been able to do as a council.

“Childhood obesity is still a serious concern, so we are hopeful this will make a difference alongside a range of other initiatives, such as our bikeability courses and other actions which came out of a recent Childhood Obesity Executive Task and Finish Group.”

Just over a fifth of West Sussex children in Reception, and over a third of children in Year 6, were classified as ‘above a healthy weight’ in 2015/16.

Parents who are in receipt of certain state benefits are also being encouraged to let the County Council know, as their child could be entitled to Free School Meals (FSM). Under the scheme, not only do children receive free school meals, but their school will also get extra funding.

Pounds for Penny

On 22 September, East Surrey Hospital Midwife, Tracy Skinner, and her husband Andy, a Maternity Ward Clerk, will be walking 100 kilometres (60 miles) in one day, from The Sea Lane Café in Goring to Brighton Marina and back twice, to raise funds for Sands, the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity.

Andy explained: “We are taking on this challenge in memory of all the babies who sadly die before, at the time of or shortly after, birth and in so doing, raising money for Sands to help fund research and support those families tragically affected. However, the inspiration behind our venture is a little girl named Penny.”

Penny’s Mum, Stephanie, said: ”Sadly, in 2016, our daughter Penny was stillborn, at 41+ weeks through a pregnancy that had been seemingly uncomplicated

until that point. In turning up at the hospital to deliver our first child, we were given the devastating news that there was no heartbeat. As first time parents, we hadn’t really considered an

She said: “Andy and I are experienced walkers, but neither of us have previously walked more than 50 Kilometres (30 miles) in one day, so we have set ourselves a considerable challenge.

New local school has opened The Weald School celebrates GCSE success There were some stunning individual performances, with 33 its doors for the first time students (14% of the year group), Little Learners Nursery School caters for children aged 2 years and above. The school is situated in the spacious Scout Hall in Swindon Road, Horsham and has a large outside area.

Owner/Manager, Terisa Tuffin, has 16 years of Ofsted registered childcare experience. She holds a level 4 Early Years Childcare and Development qualification and a Diploma in Business Management and has been Owner/Manager of Lindfield Nursery school for 10 years.

Terisa explained that she and her team have a passion for

achieving 8 or more GCSEs at A or A* grades (or equivalent). Top performers included Ella Clyne with 9 A*s and 2 9s, Rebecca Tanner with 7 A*s / 2 As and 9 and an 8, Olivia Rodriguez with 6 A*s / 2 As and a 9 and an 8 and James Brew with 7 A*s / 2 As and a 9 and an 8. Peter Woodman added, “We were thrilled to see so many students getting their target grades. These days are not just about those students getting the highest grades, but about all

working in ‘early years’ education and providing a welcoming and nurturing environment for each child to reach his or her full learning potential: “We will be offering forest school learning in our large outdoors area with our qualified forest school trained staff.”

Students at The Weald School celebrated another excellent set of GCSE results at the Billingshurst School last month.

Headteacher Peter Woodman commented: “There was huge excitement, joy and some tears of relief as students opened envelopes to receive their GCSE results. Students have produced another bumper set of grades, which exceed our best previous performance as a school.

“This is the first year that students have been graded using a numerical system for maths and English. 83% of students achieved the new level 4, or standard pass or better, in English and 83% achieved this in

maths. 77% of students achieved both English and maths at a level 4 or above. We are thrilled to see that all our students’ hard work has paid off. This year the exams in maths and English were harder with more content to cover and higher levels expected from students so it is gratifying to see that our headline figures have been sustained and improved on within this national context.”

With 239 students in the year group, over 60% of all grades were at A*-B (or equivalent) and 31% of students achieved 5 or more GCSEs at grades A* or A (or equivalent). Over 81% of all grades achieved were A*-C (or equivalent).

We are thrilled to see that all our students’ hard work has paid off students achieving the grades they need for their next step in education.

“The culture that we have developed, here at The Weald, means that students are prepared to work hard and be seen to work hard by their peers. It is fantastic to see the reaction from students when they see that all this hard work has paid off. Stunning Forest School results intended to raise the bar beyond the old A*, was one schools have been told would be almost impossible to achieve. Ms Denning stated: “I am delighted that 8% of our boys achieved this Grade 9 in Maths, against a national figure of 3.5%; and 4% in English (2.2%).

Todays’ press has also focused on the poor performance of British pupils in foreign languages. Again – our results are stunning, with an average of 87% across French, Spanish and German.

“We celebrate all our boys’ results and it is worth noting that those pupils, who achieved less than a Grade 4 in English today, sat exactly the same paper as those who achieved a Grade 9.

Some of our boys made outstanding progress: Dan King, Spencer Wright, Paul Green, Ash Beech and Scott Munnoch achieved on average two grades higher in their exams than forecast, whilst Alex Munnoch outstripped his forecast by an average of 3 grades.

“I am delighted that the hard work, commitment and dedication of our pupils and staff, along with the support of parents, have been rewarded. At Forest we strive to challenge pupils and provide an environment where boys really do learn best.”

Pupils, staff and Governors at The Forest School are celebrating an excellent year of GCSE exam results.

Whilst the national figures show a fall in results, pupils at the Forest School have performed extremely well, enabling the school to maintain its record as one of the highest performing schools for boys nationally.

On results day, Headteacher, Siobhan Denning, said: “We are extremely proud of our pupils’ achievements, with 74% of them achieving Grade 4 and above (C+ in “old money”) in both English and Maths in the new, harder GCSEs, against a national figure for all pupils of 66%. It was lovely

to be in school this morning and watch the pleasure and delight in our pupils’ faces as they opened their envelopes and read their results. There were so many happy faces and it was wonderful to see so many staff in school to share in the boys’ successes.

“As in all schools today, there was some concern about the impact of the new exams.

However, we had worked hard with the boys to ensure that they were fully prepared and they performed outstandingly. 81% achieved a Grade 4 or above in Maths; our English results of 82% are especially pleasing, as they significantly buck the national trend for boys’ results in English.”

More able pupils at the school continue to do exceptionally well – 26 pupils achieved 10 or more A*/A/Grade 7+ results.

Alex Becker, James West and Jack Davey got 12 or more grades at A*/A/7+, Omker Kerkar, Joshua Barnett, James Collins, James Burrows and Bradley Burke achieved 13 A*/A/7+, Joe Widdowson and Joe Pollard achieved a fantastic 14 A*/A/7+ grades.

Special congratulations go to James Maclean for an amazing total of 15 A*/A/7+ grades, including a clean sweep of new grade 9s in English and Maths. Overall 22% of all results were A*/A/7+ grades – significantly above the national average.

Retired teacher’s quest to help children of Nicaragua For some, the thought of retirement brings to mind thoughts of sleepy countryside havens or bungalows by the sea, surrounded by flowers, trees or endless coastline.

Horsham Artists Open Studios (HAOS) member, Carolyn Gibbs, has recently shared an awe inspiring, eye opening and humbling insight into her life as a retiree: “I have enjoyed travelling for some years and on my first trip to Peru in 2007 I returned determined to learn Spanish. This has prompted me to visit many Spanish speaking countries, particularly South and Central America. Also since my retirement and losing my husband to prostate cancer, I have combined my hobbies of art and embroidery to raise funds for charity; I was involved in the Creatives shop in Billingshurst, both as an artist and a member of the Community Partnership.

During the last two winters, I have taken extended trips to include attendance at Spanish schools in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, travelling through Central America. This has enabled me to get to know local people and learn about their countries and culture.

I have now developed an ongoing friendship with one of my guides, Jose Antonio Ruiz Hernandez, who lives on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua.

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Central America, after Haiti, and many children complete very few years of schooling. Those who do, have, to commit time and effort outside of the normal school day and endure many hardships to

pursue their aspirations.

Jose experienced these challenges and has gone on to learn two languages and is a local guide.

In his early thirties, he is now setting up his own kayak business to provide employment to his local community, Urbaite and offer tourist services. He also teaches local students languages. His story inspired me and his enthusiasm for life and learning was so positive, yet he described how he had been unable to attend his graduations, as his parents could not afford new clothes. I decided to help him move his plans forward and he wanted me to return to see his progress. He has named one of the kayaks after me! We are also trying to organise for him to visit England some time.

I have arranged to return to Ometepe Island in January 2018 for nearly five weeks; Jose has organised for me to visit and volunteer in the schools so I can support the children with learning English and help in other local community facilities. I have been collecting small items of stationery and school clothing for families in need. I have been accumulating funds that will help them purchase computer equipment and sports clothing and items locally as these items are lower cost there and purchases would help the local economy.

My travels there have made me feel embarrassed by the luxuries we have available on a daily basis here, and as a responsible traveller I want to improve the life opportunities of some very aspirational young people. The children in the Rafael Herrera Primary school have

to borrow a football and have no kit to play against other schools. The headteacher handwrote a letter, which Jose photographed in order to send a communication to me.

There is no equipment and only basic buildings. I have spent forty years working in our education system, as a teacher, headteacher and as an adviser in West Sussex, and realise what a disadvantage these children have.

I will be exhibiting later this year at the Association of Sussex Artists and in October, with the HAOS group at their Autumn Fayre in Horsham, and any sales will contribute towards this work.

Stormtroopers Invade The West Sussex Woodturners at Amberley Museum

The West Sussex Woodturners were somewhat surprised when they were joined by a Stormtrooper at their Kids craft activity day in Amberley Museum last Wednesday.

All was going to plan, with children delightedly woodturning their own mini-beasts, before finishing off their creations at the decorating tables when, unexpectedly, a Stormtrooper marched

in with his prisoner, Caroline Jeffery, Amberley’s Education Officer.

With the Woodturners believing they had come under attack, all was made clear when the Star Wars character insisted that he too should try his hand at woodturning.

To the amazement of the many children who were making their mini-beasts, the Stormtrooper

stood in place at the lathe to turn his own unique mini-beast from a galaxy far, far away.

Keith Greenfield, organiser of the Woodturners events at Amberley, said: “We host many kids’ days in the school holidays throughout the year, but this has got to have been one of the most unusual. The children love turning their own mini-beasts before decorating them and many come back time and time again over the year to create the different items for each themed event. Who knows - maybe the Stormtrooper will too…”

Proceedings were then delayed further as the special guest posed for photos with children, parents and West Sussex Woodturners, Keith Greenfield and Colin Willetts.

Delighted with his achievement, the Stormtrooper then remembered his duties and marched off to join forces with the six Daleks that were also invading Amberley Museum that day.

Collyer’s students focus on “e-PD” Film A taste of the high life in Horsham

for profit organisation based in Horsham. Since 2011, it has developed into a vibrant hub of 210 subscribing schools in West and East Sussex with 6,000 registered users. e-PD enables schools to share skills, expertise, training and good practice, offering great professional development for all school staff and the opportunity

On Thursday 17 August more than 100 people from Horsham and the surrounding district attended a free event at Highwood Mill, a stylish new development for the over 55s.

The open afternoon, held in Ingram’s restaurant, offered afternoon tea and cocktails crafted for the occasion.

The room was filled with songs performed by a Rat Pack tribute, which got the event into full swing and the attendees up and dancing.

Guests were given personal tours of the building’s luxurious apartments and were able to explore additional facilities, including an on-site hair and beauty salon, library, residents’ lounge, and activities studio.

A raffle completed the afternoon. A total of £87.50 was raised, which will go towards a day trip in early 2018.

Collyer’s media and film students are creating a short promotional film covering the successful West Sussex e-Learning Conference. Working to a professional brief, Students Jack Newnham, Thea Milford, Vicky Gough and Simone Trathen-Harris are involved in the project. “e-PD” is a school-led not

Exhibitors announced for Jobs and Skills Fair

Nearly 40 employers looking to hire locally will be present at the third Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair at the Drill Hall in Horsham on 20 September 2017.

The Fair, organised by Horsham District Council in partnership with The District Post, Horsham Jobcentre Plus and The College of Richard Collyer, and sponsored by the Federation of Small Busi-

nesses, opens from 11am to 3pm and will be a great opportunity for anyone of any age or employment background to meet a wide range of employers eager to recruit and grow their organisations.

In attendance will be important local employers including AJW Group, Metricell, Assurity Consulting and Hepworths Brewers.

There are more employers than in

2016 and opportunities will cover more sectors of work, as well as provide apprenticeships and voluntary opportunities.

There will be workshops provided by the National Careers Service helping people develop their CVs and Interview skills and well as providing advice about finding work through digital channels.

If you’re on a quest for that first

job, a change of direction or some career advice, or know someone else who might be, this year’s Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair may well provide the means to an end and the beginning of your journey to work and a fulfilling career.

Brock Taylor, Horsham’s leading independent estate agents, have announced their sponsorship for the second consecutive year of the Pink Gift Fair.

Taking place on the 16th and 17th September 2017 at Parkside, Horsham District Council offices, the official Cancer Research UK event will raise money for the Cancer Research Brighton Research Laboratories with 10% of every £1 spent going towards research into finding cures for 200 types of cancer.

The fair offers attendees affordable fashion, jewellery, home interiors, children’s clothes and food and drink to enjoy. With

the Horsham District Council offices providing space to showcase a wider variety of stalls and a fantastic range of products for visitors.

Organiser Sally Pavey has called the event, “exciting and inspiring”, and has described the new venue as, “fresh, premium and contemporary as well as traditional in its vintage avenues”. In addition to the gift stalls visitors will also be able to speak with professional researchers and take a 3D virtual tour of the laboratories.

You can attend the event from 9.30am on both the Saturday and Sunday, with stalls closing at 4pm on both days. A small amount of parking will be available at the back of the Parkside building, available for a £1 donation.

Local charity celebrates 25 years of inclusive support for children, young people and families Springboard, who operate across West Sussex and Sutton, celebrated their 25th Anniversary with a family party at the Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park on Saturday.

Under the banner “Play and Fun for Everyone,” Springboard supports disabled children and young people, from 0-25 years old, to enjoy active social opportunities which build independence, increase life skills, as well as enhancing family wellbeing, relationships and resilience.

The charity was founded in 1992 by a group of Horsham parents with disabled children.

Having experienced a lack of play activities and support for their children out of school time, they decided to form their own group which promoted inclusive play for all abilities. Over the last 25 years, the charity has developed its services to provide support across the West Sussex area, including Horsham, Crawley, Mid Sussex, Worthing and Sutton, and now operates two inclusive stay and play centres that also welcome families with non-disabled children.

Some of the founder members, who attended the event, said they were incredibly

emotional and proud to see just how many families had been supported over the years and to see how much of an asset the charity is to the local community.

Families enjoyed music, entertainment, raffles, picnics and a chance to look back on the organisation’s 25-year history in glorious weather.

Children’s entertainer Tomfoolery - the charity’s patron - compered the event and presented two popular shows.

Hollywood Bowl Crawley provided an inflatable bowling alley, alongside marquees loaned

by Harwoods Group, which provided space and shade for inclusive fun, activities and play for all ages.

Mark, a young person who uses Springboard’s services, said: “I have had a great time It was brilliant! The music and bowling have been my favourite things.”

Su Parrish, Service Delivery Manager at Springboard, said: “We have received such fantastic support from businesses and the local community. To be able to host this event in such a great public space, and see such diverse and inclusive attendance, shows how we all want to be part of play and fun for everyone”.

The Pink Gift Fair is in its 2nd year and takes up its residency at West Sussex and Horsham council offices, Parkside. Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September from 9.30am till 4pm each day.

Visitors will not only discover an array of spectacular top-notch design-led products ranging from jewellery to games, from local gin and cheese to home accessories, gifts and toys, from LED lighting to

candles, and so much more.

As well as complimentary healthcare professionals taster sessions include - reflexology, aromatherapy, reiki healing, wellbeing through Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and one of the best psychic mediums you will discover in the southeast undertaking Tarot card readings during the fair, and more. Barbara Beechey, from Horley, has been a clairvoyant for over 30 years and uses tarot, clairvoyance and psychometry in her readings that are delivered with sensitivity.

The Pink Gift Fair, with your support, aims to become an annual event for Horsham, as one in two people born in the UK after 1960 will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. Right now, half of the people diagnosed

with cancer will survive their disease for at least 10 years.

The aim is to accelerate progress and see 3 in 4 people surviving cancer for 10 years or more by 2034 but this can only be done through research and thus all the money raised from the fair will go direct to the Brighton cancer research laboratories.

Step inside the world of laboratories through Virtual Reality headsets at the fair; see first hand the groundbreaking work that is being undertaken. By examining the DNA profile of cancer suffers to find cures researchers are also finding way to help other diseases along the way.

Admission is £3 that includes a strip of raffle tickets; raffle prizes provided by the stallholders as well as local companies so some very special prizes are awaiting you.

Attendees to the fair can use the Parkside car park for an additional £1 donation entrance off Madeira Avenue (off the Swan Walk car park and Bowling alley roundabout).

Visitors can enter a free prize draw to win an Audi car for the weekend.

Outside the front of Parkside visitors will find a vintage merrygo-round and sweet shop as well as face painters, balloons and a Five Oaks Audi car display.

Restaurant in the town lend their support by offering visitors attending the fair a special offer when they show their pink heart stamp.

The Pink Gift Fair is not like any other charity fair as it showcases a treasure trove of stalls in modern surroundings with a coffee shop and disabled facilities on hand.

Jodie Munday is a singer with a mission, talking to the District Post on her way to another gig at Shipley’s George and Dragon - Jodie said: “As soon as I picked up a guitar I knew I wanted to be a singer, I absolutely love singing!” Jodie writes a lot of her own songs, including comedy numbers, but also specialises in a wide range of cover versions – from Dolly Parton to Mumford and Sons. And, Jodie is putting her talents to good use – running the “Music to Fred’s Ears” project to help someone who has inspired and encouraged many local musicians. Jodie says: “Fred Ball is a huge part of our local

music scene, offering impeccable service as a sound engineer.

and subsequently his job (mixing live sound) is becoming harder for him. He has struggled with NHS hearing aids for quite a while and we don’t want him to have to stop doing the job he loves, and which really does benefit us. So, a large number of local musicians and friends are fundraising to buy Fred the best hearing aids available.” Jodie is organising music nights to further the cause and at the recent Shelley Arms Charity Day £2,000 was raised. The South East Hearing Centre have committed sponsorship and promised to ensure that Fred gets the best advice and the best aids. Jodie’s aim is to raise £5,000 to buy state of the art enhancement for Fred in time for his December birthday, saying: “We will be putting on

events in and around Horsham and Crawley, at which supporting merchandise will be on sale, including a double disc CD featuring a large group of local artists – going for a song at £10!”

26 year old Jodie Munday has been a winner in the Battle of the Bands competition and would love to be a full time musician, meanwhile she can be seen in Horsham at B52s and the Bear, and this Saturday from 8pm she will be appearing at Sumner Ponds in Barns Green.

A requirement will be to continue to enhance their professional development by obtaining additional qualifications as and when required. The successful candidate will be a good communicator and be able to motivate members & staff to achieve their goals.

The post holder must be able to work shifts including evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Pulborough Pull Out All the Stops to Host The Sussex VP’S!

Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC As the outdoor bowls season draws to a close, Pulborough BC turn their attention to hosting their annual club events, fundraising for charity and welcoming the Sussex Vice Presidents to the Pulborough green.

Pulborough BC welcomed the local band “Hindrance” for a fundraising evening in aid of Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice.

With the free performance from the band and proceeds from the raffle, the night was a huge success, raising over £100 for a very worthy charity.

President’s Day at PBC was organised for the third year, by current club president, Malcolm Gray. 6 triples played 3 sessions of 6 ends, cullminating in a six end final, contested by skip, Paul Day, with Linda Meadowcroft and Hugh Hubbard in support and Steve

Adsett, John Walsh and Malcolm Gray as the second triple. Despite a strong route through to the final, Steve Adsett and team had to settle for second place with a score of 10 shots to 3 in favour of their opponents! The glass trophies were presented on the green, followed by a buffet, raffle and the all important drinks at the bar!

The final round of the Brookes Motors League betwean Pulborough and Southbourne on Weds at 2pm, was to decide the winners and runners-up in the top division. After holding the title for the last 3 years, Pulborough had to hand the honours to Southbourne, after they produced the game of their lives to get the required points to beat Pulborough to the top spot for 2017 congratulations Southbourne, but Pulborough will be fighting for the title again in 2018!

The annual visit of the Sussex Vice Presidents is always one to watch and this year, Pulborough were joined by teams from Fittleworth and Petworth to add to the mix. The maximum 6 rinks of players took to the green, with the skill level evident from the first shot! The Petworth quartet found it difficult to match the VP’s on grass, but Fittleworth excelled, gaining top rink with a 22/10 scoreline! The Pulborough teams produced a mixed bag of results, with 1 win, a draw and 2 losses against some well practiced club and county players. Top rink for Pulborough went to skip, Len Adsett, with Kath Ayling as lead, Mike Richards as 2 and Jeff Davy as 3, 18/16.

Sunday 3rd Sept saw the resurection of the bowls “Ashes”, or President v Captain, as it is otherwise known! 6 triples played a total of 18 ends in horendous conditions, with rain soaking the players and making reaching the jack that bit more difficult! The overall result was 2 wins out of 3 for the President’s team, (who wore pink), but the overall result going to the “true blue” Captain’s team, after skip, John Brown, lead, Ivan Salmon and Roger Jupp as 2, scored heavilly throughout their game, finally producing a 29/9 victory, lifting the Captain’s result to +10 shots.

Pulborough next play on Monday, when they host the Shrivenham tourists, an away game at Norfolk on Weds, at home to Petworth on Fri 8th and the club finals weekend over the 9th and 10th of Sept, spectators always welcome!

Horsham and Pulborough start their league programmes this Saturday, both in London SE2 League, Boro having secured promotion to that level for the first time.

Horsham Captain Tom Johnson told the District Post: “It’s a tough league but we did quite well last season considering that we had a young and inexperienced side. I’m really looking forward to the new season, my second as skipper – we’ve got some experienced hands returning and the young players will have benefitted from what they learned in the

room complex and artificial pitch.

Jordan Bell, Ryan Maguire and Jordan Smith will only get better after playing in the 1st XV. We’ll also have last season’s Player of the Year Nick Bell along with the experience of Jonny Whiting, and the Tredgett brothers – Richard and Michael, and we’re delighted to welcome back Josh Mills from travelling and Mike Watts from Worthing. Pulborough fully merited promotion after winning their league last season, but are about to enter unknown territory and are expecting a tough baptism. Head Coach Clayton Saunders says: “We’ve boosted our squad with some new signings, including Harrison Short from Worthing and Anthony Morris, a prop from Wellington College and we’re very pleased to be getting Will Scrase back on the right wing and Ben Miller and Euen Calloway, too. Realistically, our first goal is to stay up, we know that we’ll be up against some tough metropolitan sides with plenty of experience, but we’ll be targeting some of our Sussex opponents. We’ll need to win at least six games to retain our new status and how we handle losses will be very important, so we’ve had some sessions with a sports psychologist to help us with our strategic planning. We start with a visit to Beckenham, following which we’ll be glad to return to Freelands for our first home game of the season on Saturday 16, against Hove.” Early season matches start at 3pm.

Horsham Joggers weekly roundup On Saturday Horsham Parkrun celebrated its third birthday with a record attendance of an incredible 548 runners.

Horsham Jogger Neil Boniface was the to get to the cake finishing in 15 minutes and 43 seconds.

Sunday saw 23 members of the club tackling the Fittleworth 5-mile race as part of the West Sussex Fun Run League. Mal Thornton was first clubman home in in 34 minutes and 40 seconds followed by David Jones in 35-26.

Father and son Horsham Joggers Dan and Alan Pettitt competed in very different events last weekend. Young Dan competed at the Sussex Championships at the K2 in Crawley and completed 3 Kilometres on the track finishing 2nd in a marvellous 9 minutes 25 seconds while dad, Alan, attempted the slightly more challenging London to Brighton Ultra Marathon.

He started in Blackheath at 6:15 am finishing exhausted wet and cold in Brighton some 13 hours 20 minutes later. Further afield, Helen Woods went for a trot around Mont Blanc completing 55 miles of the Ultra Trail race with over 6000m of ascent.

Another win for Cottesmore ladies in county competition The magnificent crystal bowl that is the SCLGA President’s Team Trophy has returned to Cottesmore with their team of Meg Mitchell, Viv Lyons and Pat Johns winning at Haywards Heath on Thursday. They had a great score of 83 points and were closely followed by Brighton and Hove on 82 and Copthorne with 79. It is the second time in the four year history of the competition that Cottesmore have won the trophy, having won it in 2014 in its inaugural year at Sedlescombe.

Lyons has had a great few days with a win in the June Monk Cup on Bank Holiday Monday with 39 points, just ahead of Catherine Malins on 38. Catherine had her own success winning the Newman Cup with 38 points from Pat Johns

in second place and Penny Gaunt in third, both with 35 points.

Lucy Pigram has also been in great form, winning the Junior August stableford with a magnificent 45 points, reducing her handicap by 3 to 22. In addition, Lucy won the ‘Family Mixed Foursomes’ (previously known as Fathers & Sons/Daughters) with her dad, and Men’s Captain, Trevor, after being runners up last year.

Cottesmore’s Annual Pro-Am is on Friday 29th September, a major fundraiser for all the club sections’ charities, this year supporting The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, The Eye Tumour Research Fund and Canine Partners. Horsham wallop Ashford United in the FA Cup

ford United 6-0 in last Saturday’s First Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup at Culver Road, Lancing, where the Hornets have settled in well with three wins from three starts.

The cup triumph against Ashford was the Hornet’s most comprehensive FA Cup win since they beat Arundel 7-1 ten years ago.

Ashford are struggling in the lower

reaches of the same Bostik League South Division as Horsham - with just two goals and 11 conceded.

With both teams unaccountably playing in yellow there was room for confusion, but it was definitely the Hornets who created the initial opportunities and, having twice threatened to score, they opened their account in the 11th minute when Darren Boswell’s drive crashed into the net from Rob O’Toole’s supply. Toby House doubled the lead from close range seven minutes later, followed by a swarm of Hornet attacks and a rare Ashford foray, until House scored again, catching the defence in disarray. The Hornets added to Ashford’s misery just before the break when full back Steve Metcalf latched onto an ineffective clearance from visiting keeper Aaron Lee-Wharton.

Both sides created chances early in the second half, but, inevitably, the Hornets scored again – with a flick from debutant Michael Waller, before O’Toole put the icing on the cake with the sixth goal half an hour before the final whistle. Visiting supporters kept their spirits up, but their side – known as the Nuts & Bolts – need to tighten up, especially in defence. The Hornets are rewarded with a home second round draw against more Kent opponents - fellow Bostik League side Herne Bay, currently one place above Horsham in mid table.

That tie will be played on Saturday September 16, the away match against the same opponents being re-scheduled to Tuesday October 24 (7.45 pm). Hornets home league match against Carshalton, originally to have taken place on the date of the Ashford cup game, has been moved to Tuesday October 10 with a 7.30 kick off. Meanwhile, the Hornets resume league action this Saturday with a tough away match against top of the table Walton Casuals who have won all four of their games to date.

time and had another good run in the National competition, so we’re happy!” At Fulking, Roffey elected to bat first and recovered well after an early set back, reaching 175-2, thanks to 79 from the ever- consistent Theo Rivers and 56 from Josh Fleming, emulating his half century in the opening match of the campaign. But, once those two batsmen departed only Jibran Khan and George Fleming made any telling contribution, the innings closing with a lower than anticipated 221 run target.In reply Nomads got to 148-2 but then lost wickets regularly, falling 16 runs short with 11 balls unused. Nathan Poole made 88 and Nomads’ Captain Jeremy Green 46. Stuart Faith’s 27 was, though, the only other meaningful score, eight Nomads’ batsmen ending on single figures, Jamie Atkins stepping up in the absence of Leigh Harrison with 3-34, Rohit Jagota, Alex Collins and Rivers sharing the remaining spoils. Then, they were able to win on a day when our match was abandoned, but good luck to them – everyone knows they’re a good side despite their demise on the last day of the season (when they were bowled out for 50 by Cuckfield after being 34-9).” East Grinstead’s first title was won with 432 points, Roffey ending on 419.

No Joy For Heath at Down Crawley Down Gatwick 3-0 Broadbridge Heath Football Sam Chapman Looking to recover from the weekend defeat, Heath arrived at Crawley Down, not a happy hunting ground in the past, without the unavailable Michael Chester, Jamie Robinson, Tom Howard Bold and the injured Stuart Chester and Scott Weller.

The re-gigged team started fairly comfortably with Shaun Findlay causing problems down the left and Tim Martin and Devon Fender threatening to get in behind the home defence. But as the half wore on Down began to control more possession and on 27 minutes Ollie Leslie was given too much room to run at the Bears defence before slipping the ball wide to Lee Thomas who finished low into Connor Evento’s net.

The home side continued to have the bulk of possession but Heath still looked dangerous on the break and Devon Fender lobbed over when through and then was thwarted by a last ditch tackle as he was about to put the ball into the net. Tim Martin finished clinically only to have the goal disallowed for offside. Between these attacks Down continued to threaten the Heath goal with debutant

keeper Evento showing some good handling. With 5 minutes to go before half time, Down gained a free kick 25 yards from goal and ex Horsham and Three Bridges midfielder Wilson Peauroux curled the ball past the wall to double his sides lead.

The second half began with a far more determined Heath taking the game to their hosts and producing several good chances for Fender, Martin and Cousins but a lack of clinical finishing and determined defence the score remained the same. Heath continued to have the bulk of the game with the Down keeper looking very assured and Tim Martin’s shot being cleared off the line onto the cross bar and out. Martin also hooked a volley over and another last dich tackle thwarted Fender at the near post.

As time ran out Down broke away and Kieran Grieg sealed the home victory. With more clinical finishing from both sides it could have been a high scoring draw but in the end Down were good value for their win and Heath must now look to a trip to Eastbourne United to end this mini dip.

Batting first after winning the toss, Horsham were soon 28-3 with Sussex’s Will Beer and Tom Haines gone, along with Tom Clark, confirming that Ansty’s opening bowlers, Jake Wilson (36 wickets in this campaign) and Jethro Menzies warrant respect – both finished with three wickets apiece. But, Michael Thornely treated spectators to an excellent innings, another hundred looking likely until he fell for 88, including 7 fours and 2 sixes. Then Nick Oxley weighed in with 40 and Ryan Maskell, Craig Gallagher – still hobbling from his ankle injury - and Mika Ekstrom posted useful twenties, Horsham’s 245 being aided by some generous ground fielding. Ansty have had batting problems all season

and although they created a promising platform, they never really threatened to mount a serious challenge as they slid from 46-1 to 97-6, finding Beer and Michael Munday (the league’s leading wicket taker with a tally of 45) especially difficult to master. Oxley took 3-34, Ross Whyte, Munday and Beer the remainder, a run out completing Ansty’s demise with William Wright unable to bat.

Commenting on Horsham’s final game and their season Captain Michael Thornely said: “The wicket was showing signs of spin, so we had a good score – plenty. Mika was unlucky early on but everyone chipped in with both bat and ball. We’re getting there, we’ve got the basis of a good side: newcomers Ryan, Nick Oxley and Mika have all fitted in well alongside our established players. Horsham is the club where I learned my cricket and I’ve really enjoyed my first year as captain. If we can sort out more consistent availability then we’re on the right route.”

Horsham finish fourth, five points behind Cuckfield, while Ansty, after just this season in the Premier League, go down with Bexhill. Mercurial Eastbourne come back up, joined by top flight newcomers, Ifield.
