Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, commented: “I thought it was an excellent addition to our, already packed, programme of festivals and events under the Horsham Time Well Spent banner.
“I spent the morning in a very busy Horsham and it was clear that it had attracted a large audience of all ages, all of whom appeared to be enjoying the events on offer. He had a heart of gold and always put others before himself. He was supportive, kind and caring to all he met. “He was inquisitive about

This was a violent attack and I am encouraging anyone, who has any information regarding this incident, to have the courage to come forward and speak to the police.” In a follow up statement, on 22 September, it was announced that the men had been charged with Anthony’s murder; Nicholas Bridge,18 from Loughborough Park, Brixton, London and Daniel Omofeghare, 20, of no fixed abode.

Fundraising is a piece of cake for Horsham care home A local care home is asking the people of Horsham to join in with the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning today (29 September) to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. From 10am-12 noon, Care UK’s Skylark House care home, on St Marks Lane, Horsham, is inviting the community to join residents for a morning of coffee, cake and catch-ups to help raise money for the 2.5 million people living with cancer across the UK. Guests will enjoy a relaxing morning sharing a cuppa with residents, along with a tempting selection of homemade cakes and treats - all of which will be available for a small donation to Macmillan. Every year, Macmillan organises the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in kitchens, offices and village halls across the globe, to fundraise for people living with cancer. Since the very first coffee morning in 1990, over £165.5 million has been raised for the
charity, enabling it to support individuals from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. Home manager, Devendra Lallchand, explained why Skylark House is taking part in the Macmillan Coffee Morning: “The difficulty of facing cancer is a problem most of us know far too well, whether through watching the struggle of a friend or family member, or battling the illness ourselves – so we understand the importance of the work that Macmillan does. “This coffee morning gives us a wonderful opportunity to invite local people, family and friends to join us for a fun morning, while raising funds to support the vital services provided by Macmillan. It’s set to be a great event, and we hope the local community will join the Care UK team who will have been busy whisking up a storm!” If you would like to make a donation to Macmillan visit https:// www.macmillan.org.uk/donate. Architects granted consent to demolish Grade II*listed Horsham building
Architects have received planning consent on behalf of Christ’s Hospital School, Horsham, to demolish part of their
grade II* listed buildings. The old kitchen will be replaced with a contemporary scheme, creating a more flexible catering
facility for the production of over 800,000 meals per year, as well as classrooms and a much improved face to the Northern façade, which now forms the main approach to the school. NRAP architects, appointed in July 2016 following a competitive interview, are delighted with the news. Director Richards Owers said: “It is no small achievement to be given permission to demolish a large part of a Grade II* Listed building; made possible not only by the quality of the design, but also by the vision and leadership provided by the School.” The facility will replace the original grade II* listed Aston Webb-designed building, which had been much altered, but which Conservation Officers had previously sought to preserve. NRAP’s designs received support from Historic England who said: “The design is articulated in a contemporary way that would provide a fitting first impression of this important school complex. The proposal includes public realm improvements around the new building, which represents a substantial improvement on the current situation.” Construction is due to start on site early next year. New larger car park for Horsham to be completed early next year Piries Place car park
At a Horsham District Council Cabinet meeting on 21 September, it was agreed that the existing Piries Place car park would be demolished and replaced with a new larger car park on the same site. The new car park will create additional spaces and will deliver an improved environment for motorists. The council is looking to time the opening of the car park with the completion of the redevelopment of the adjacent Piries Place

Shopping Centre, which is being reconfigured to create a new restaurant, cinema and hotel destination, creating a major evening and leisure experience. Following the council’s decision, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, commented: “Parking demand in the town centre is set to grow in the coming years and this redevelopment will be key to accommodating this growth. “Improving the motorist experience was at the centre of the de-
cision to refurbish the existing car park. The new car park will also improve access to the town centre by providing additional disability bays and parent and child bays. “It is also intended to include a Changing Places facility within the car park and consideration will be given to introducing electric parking points, recognising the trend towards electric vehicles.” The redeveloped car park and shopping centre are set to be complete by early 2019.
More car parks to take mobile phone payment From 1 October, more of Horsham district’s car parks are set to benefit from mobile phone payment options. Motorists, wishing to pay for their parking by phone, will be able to use a new cashless parking service called RingGo in Horsham District Council’s car parks in Steyning, Henfield, Storrington, Pulborough, Billingshurst and Southwater Country Park. Commenting on the introduction of new payment method, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Gordon Lindsay said: “Our aim is to make parking as easy as possible for visitors and residents. Car park users now have the choice of paying by mobile phone as well as cash or card.” Additional signs and instructions will be placed in car parks to assist users. If you haven’t used RingGo before, you can register to use it either by downloading and using the RingGo app (free to download and available through most smartphones) or by going online: www.
RingGo.co.uk and completing details about yourself, your vehicle and payment card. When you park, you simply provide the location code (a five digit number shown on signs near the parking bay) and say how long you want to park. If you haven’t tried phone parking before, why not give it a go? With phone parking you don’t have to: Carry change; Queue up in the rain to get a ticket; Put a ticket on your dashboard. You can also be reminded when your parking is about to run out and top up your parking wherever you are, thereby helping to avoid a penalty charge notice. It’s worth noting that Horsham Town Centre car parks, which currently operate the SmartPark vehicle number plate recognition system, will not operate the RingGo mobile phone payment method. For more information on how RingGo operates, please watch the short animation at www.myRingGo.co.uk/howitworks

Charities and community groups are missing out on applying for funding available from West Sussex County Council with some areas yet to receive a single application in 2017/18. The Community Initiative Fund provides grants targeted at supporting communities to deliver local projects in their area. The County Local Committees in Mid Sussex, Arun, Horsham, Chichester and Crawley currently have a significant amount of Community Initiative Funding available. Last year, a total of £371,091 was awarded to good causes across West Sussex. Debbie Kennard, County Council Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “We have had some great projects in the past which we have been able to support through Community Initiative Funding, such as the Special Families support group in East Grinstead for families with disabled children. “We have some very deserving community groups in our county so would encourage people to come forward and make the most of the opportunity. There are also two other fund-
ing schemes available, which people can find more out about via our website.” Community Initiative Fund awards range from £1,000 to £5,000. Grant applications are considered at County Local Committee meetings, with the deadline for applications approximately one month in advance: • North Mid Sussex CLC deadline for applications is 2 October and applications will be considered at the next meeting on 7 November • The Joint Arun Area Committees applications will need to be submitted by 14 October to be considered at the next meeting round of meetings in November • North Horsham CLC’s deadline is 6 October to be considered at the next meeting on 6 November • Chanctonbury CLC’s deadline is 15 October to be considered at the next meeting on 15 November • Crawley CLC’s deadline is 16 October to be considered at the next meeting on 16 November Application forms and information on how to apply can be found on the Community Initiative Funding page of the West Sussex County Council website or by emailing talkwithus@ westsussex.gov.uk.

Fitness Showcase Bluecoat Sports Health and Fitness Club at Christ’s Hospital hosted their annual Fitness Showcase on Friday 22nd & Saturday 23th September, showcasing the extensive range of classes at the club, pool & racket sport facilities. The high energy event welcomed lots of Sussex locals to enjoy taster sessions in a range of classes & activities which kicked off on Friday night with a super-size Les Mills class, Body Combat! Followed closely by CXWORX & Body Balance all delivered by Bluecoats enthusiastic and motivational instructors. Other popular classes included Body Pump, Tai Chi and TRX on Saturday. Paul Gasson, acting Commercial Manager highlights the importance of local fitness events, “It’s essential for our community to find new and exciting ways to get active. By trying out a number of different classes individuals, families and friends can find an activity that truly motivates and meet like-minded people”. At the club, we support our members and encourage members to support each other. In the UK we see the obesity epidemic get a lot of press, but we believe individuals can improve their health when local facilities go that extra mile to make fitness fun and easily part of a healthy routine”. The showcase successfully introduced a new line-up of fitness options and got families involved with a kids club and crèche that ran from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Throughout the high-energy day, attendees enjoyed a fantastic atmosphere. A fun and interactive swimming Gala was held at the club and was thoroughly enjoyed by many children and their families. Challenging Social Mobility in the 21st Century
On 14 September, Christ’s Hospital was delighted to welcome Dr Tessa Stone, who spoke to senior pupils about the challenge of social mobility in the 21st century. Dr Stone is Chair of the Bridge Group and Chief Executive of Farms for City Children, a leading national charity that supports the progress of young people from less advantaged backgrounds. Dr Stone gave an insightful and eye-opening talk, which clearly resonated with the pupils and the educational opportunity they enjoy at Christ’s Hospital. Year 13 Peter Batchelar said: “Dr Stone gave some staggering figures and statistics, which really highlighted how serious the issue is in today’s society. For example, of two students with exactly the same 2.1 degree, the one who went to inde-

pendent school will earn an average starting salary of £2,590 P/A more than the one that went to state school. I thought the topic was particularly relevant at a school that has ‘pioneered social mobility and challenged social inequality’; a mission statement the school is very proud of. Having been an admissions tutor at Cambridge University, Dr Stone was more than qualified to talk about the top end of the ‘social ladder’, but also having been the chair of multiple charities, focussing on giving disadvantaged children a better chance in life, she has had a very good perspective of the issue as a whole. This was evident as she spoke. In 45 minutes, where we were constantly engaged with infographics and thought-provoking figures, Dr Stone covered not only
social mobility, or lack thereof, in the UK, but internationally. The USA adopts some different strategies to tackling this issue, such as affirmative action, where BME students get a certain tariff added to their test scores. This issue was met with strong opposition and even made it to the Supreme Court. But after the Ivy League universities presented a study, which shows an ethnically diverse education is in many ways superior to otherwise, the system was ruled to stay in operation. I think this again speaks volumes at a school like Christ’s Hospital, where there is such a pride in diversity. We would like to thank Dr Stone for visiting our school.” Christ’s Hospital has pioneered social mobility by providing an educational opportunity for less advantaged children for nearly five centuries. As economic and social inequality continue to grow in the UK, Christ’s Hospital’s mission is ever more relevant. Currently, Christ’s Hospital provides £16m of means-tested fee assistance per year, more than any other independent boarding school in the UK. 13% of its pupils would qualify for FSM (in the state system), with a further 17% of pupils’ families being on the cusp of the Government’s FSM criteria (on very low household incomes, struggling to make ends meet). Over 90% of leavers, many of whom have faced adversity in their young lives, secure places at top universities in the UK and abroad.
Care home puts the icing on the cake for Cupcake Week 2017 National Cupcake Week (18 - 24 September) has been a real treat at Westlake House in Horsham, where sweet-toothed staff and residents couldn’t wait to get out their aprons and mixing bowls for the occasion. The week, organised by British Baker Magazine, is a celebration of all things cupcake and is the perfect excuse to get everybody together for a baking session or a cake decorating class. Baking is a much-loved hobby, for many people who live and work at Westlake House, so it’s no surprise that the week was full of excitement and creativity. Residents had a tea party with fancy cupcakes and they got busy
decorating them. The resident, who recieved a prize for having decorated the best cupcake, said: “I used to make cupcakes with my children, when they were little, and they have always been my favourite thing to bake – simple but very tasty!” Soonita Shaw, Business Support Manager at Westlake House, said: “There are a lot of enthusiastic bakers at this home, who really demonstrated their talent and made some fantastic treats for everyone to enjoy. I had a go at decorating some of the cakes but left the rest to the experts, as we certainly have plenty of those here!”

The Horsham Business Show to be held at The Holbrook Club in October The first ever Horsham Business Show is being held at The Holbrook Club, on 12 October, and is set to be a busy evening for exhibitors and visitors alike. In addition to local businesses exhibiting a wide range of products and services, there will be seminars, Q&A sessions, and the opportunity to make new contacts and to share knowledge. The variety of businesses exhibiting and topics covered means that this is a must attend event, whether you are thinking of starting your first business, are in the first year or now want to take your established business to the next level. The Horsham Business Show is being organised by local businessmen, Andy Hannant and John Wright. Andy and John felt that there was a need for an event that showcased local businesses and enabled visitors to gain information, help and advice, all under one roof. Following John Wright
discussions with The Holbrook Club, and with sponsorship from it’seeze Horsham, The Horsham Business Show was born. Andy explained: “by putting together a variety of businesses in one place, visitors will be able to talk about a wide range of products and services in just a couple of hours.” The Horsham Business Show will be held in the evening, from 5pm to 9pm. “We felt that was a good time, as it allows people to run their business during the day, and come along for a couple of hours on their way home, or later in the evening” John added. There will also be the opportunity to attend free 15 minute seminars and Q&A sessions on a wide range of topics, including cyber-crime, GDPR and how to use social media effectively. Whether you’re at the early stages of starting a business and need contacts and suppliers, or an established company wanting to develop new business relationships, The Horsham Business Show is an event you cannot afford to miss. For more information, please visit: www. horshambiz.com If you would like to exhibit at the Horsham Business Show, please email booking@horshambiz. com
Campaigns that get them sharing and reacting on social media will reach more people and get you noticed. Could you do an online advent calendar to engage people? And change your headers on social media - use these to promote your Christmas campaign with eye catching visuals and catchy words. But don’t forget to change them back after the festive season to ensure you remain up to date and current. Here’s something to think about if you’re not convinced on spending some advertising budget on your Christmas marketing; it’s estimated that for every £1 the 2015 Sainsbury’s Mog the Cat cost to make, they made £24 in sales profit. Now, we don’t all have the budget of Sainsbury’s or the King Of Christmas advertising, John Lewis, but a small budget on a great campaign could stand you in very good stead for those Christmas shoppers. Please ensure your content is relevant and specific to the platform
- what you are posting on Facebook may not resonate on LinkedIn and what you are posting on LinkedIn will not work on Instagram. Get your customers involved with questions and quizzes, capture their attention with engaging captions and make their lives easy. Help them with Christmas gift guides or show how your service will make their lives easier. Time is always at a premium, especially at this busy time of year so help them save it and they’ll thank you for this. Looking for some local businesses doing Christmas well already? Christmas. You’ve either sighed or smiled reading that word. If you’re a business owner then it should start you thinking about your marketing plans in the run up to the ‘big day’. As I write this we have 91 days until Christmas. Sounds ages doesn’t it? Trust me, it’ll fly by. With 54.6% of shoppers starting their shopping in October and November you need to have your Christmas marketing nailed now. In 2016 over 42% of Christmas

shopping was done via mobile phones so you want to set out your social media strategy as soon as possible if you haven’t already. How will you take people from looking at what their friends are doing on Facebook to your website? Can you take them from Twitter to walking into your store? Use your online marketing to bring them to your shop in person. Could you tempt them in with a competition or online voucher to spend in store? If you offer ‘Click and Collect’ promote this service for busy people who cannot wait in for deliveries or spend time dashing to the Post Office for missed parcels. Interestingly 39% of online shoppers used ‘Click and Collect’ last year and 20% of these shop-
pers said they would use it more this year. Swan Walk Shopping Centre in Horsham heavily promote ‘Click and Collect’ as the retailers know if people go in to store to collect a parcel they are likely to buy more whilst there. They will also probably stop for that all important ‘coffee and cake’ together with more shopping in other stores, hence the promotion by Swan Walk to help drive sales for all the stores. Gift vouchers make people spend more too. 61% of gift card holders spend more than the amount on the card so if you offer a gift card giveaway or promotion this could increase your sales longer term. Perhaps you could thank people for their loyalty with a ‘make a purchase now and receive a voucher for 10% off in December to bring them back to you. Use your Christmas marketing to tap into people’s emotions whether that’s nostalgia, happiness or even their inner Grinch!

With the year drawing to an end and just three months until Christmas is upon us, tickets are now available for the much awaited Mediaeval Baebes Christmas Carol Tour which is taking place in St Mary’s Church, Horsham on Friday 8th December. Traditionally a time for reflection and celebration, what better way to glorify the season than to join the Mediaeval Baebes for
a remarkable evening of music, dance and theatre in one of the UK’s most magnificent Cathedrals. Escorting you through a musical journey inspired by a time where poetry and music conspired to invoke sensory pleasure, the Mediaeval Baebes will be performing Christmas carol classics from their top ten album Of Kings & Angels, the haunting and uplifting title theme for TV’s
Victoria and other contemporary and traditional songs. Famous for a remarkable soundscape that can only be produced by this internationally renowned choral group, the Christmas Carol Tour will enchant audiences with a unique take on early music, traditional culture and the magic of folklore as they tread the fine line between classical and contemporary music. Seeing the Mediaeval Baebes perform their Christmas Carol show in a mediaeval cathedral is the ultimate Christmas experience, so harness the true spirit of Christmas and emerge your senses into a timeless treat of unique musical beauty. Tickets are now available from www. mediaevalbaebes.com and SEE tickets at a cost of £25 each. The Mediaeval Baebes exquisite storybook opened its pages in 1996, when a group of friends broke into a North London cemetery and sang together, clad in flowing white gowns and crowns of ivy. Pulling lyrics from mediaeval texts and setting them to original scores using mediaeval and classical instruments, whilst singing in an impressive array of long forgotten languages, the Mediaeval Baebes offer a unique musical beauty and outstanding talent. Their choice of mediaeval texts are dramatic, obscure and dark in topic and remark upon
the inevitability of death, the pointlessness of material possessions, the horror of unrequited love and the dangers of imbibing too much alcohol. Some themes are timeless! Twenty years later, these fair maidens have placed three albums into the top of the classical charts and their contribution to the BBC production of The Virgin Queen resulted in a deserved Ivor Novello Award for best television soundtrack. They currently provide the title track for the renowned ITV series Victoria and they are also shown performing in series 2 which is now on air. Earlier this year this haunting and uplifting title theme earned them two coveted Emmy nominations for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series and the Original Main Title Theme Music, which was composed by Martin Phipps. The Mediaeval Baebes have performed before enthusiastic audiences in the UK, United States, Canada, Asia and Europe in venues ranging from castles and caves to nightclubs and Renaissance Fayres. They have toured with Jools Holland and played at The Royal Albert Hall, Carnglaze Caverns in Cornwall, Jersey Opera House, Tewkesbury Abbey, supported Michael Flatley in Hyde Park, and performed at the legendary Lilith Fair in USA.

Entertainment AnimAlphabet at The Hawth AnimAlphabet, a musical journey set on an island full of bright colourful characters and bold puppets, will be coming to The Hawth Theatre this weekend. AnimAlphabet features unforgettable catchy songs, written by Sam and Al from The Hoosiers, and is a musical entertainment education experience that introduces music theory and terminology to children and their families. Treble Clef island is a wonderful land of music, song and dance, but there is a problem. Calando the dastardly duck is threatening to steal sound forever. Can Colin the Cockatoo, together with his musical-misfit friends, thwart Calando’s plans?
Each character is fun, bright and colourful and has his or her own unique musical style. The audience meets Colin the Country Cockatoo, a Jazz Giraffe, a Hip-Hop Donkey, a swing Alligator and a Reggae Frog. The show also looks at the environments that the characters inhabit, from the homes of the South American Alligator and African elephant, to those of the Caribbean Frog and the Australasian Cockatoo. AnimAlphabet promises to be a family musical like none other. Performance: Sunday 1 October at 3pm, Hawth Theatre. Tickets: £12.50 (family of four £42), available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or by visiting: hawth.co.uk

The Bootleg Shadows return to the Hawth
By popular demand, The Hawth is delighted to welcome back The Bootleg Shadows this Sunday (1 October). The Bootleg Shadows bring their outstanding tribute act to The Hawth for a night of foot tapping classics, celebrating the music of The Shadows & Cliff Richard, with plenty of humour to make it a night out to remember! In June 1960, Hank B Marvin,
Bruce Welch, Jet Harris and Tony Meehan recorded Apache. This charted in July and became the monster hit that launched the Shadows’ instrumental career and founded a nation of bespectacled guitarists dreaming of acquiring their very own red Fender Stratocaster and stepping out into the glaring spotlight of stardom. With their immaculate appearance, synchronised dance move-
ments and clean, pure melodic sound, The Shadows chalked up 35 hits of their own (not counting another 33 hits with Cliff Richard), giving them more hits than any other British group and securing them a unique place in the annals of popular music. Today, the Shadows make few live appearances, but The Bootleg Shadows keep their ‘live’ sound alive by performing a must-see concert that encompasses The Shadows’ amazing career from 1960 up until the early ‘80s. Relive such fantastic hits as: Apache, FBI, Wonderful Land, Foot Tapper, Atlantis, Kon-Tiki, Cavatina, Let Me Be The One, Bachelor Boy, Move It, plus many more. Audiences will hum the tunes and do the Shadows’ ‘famous walk’ long after having left the theatre. For anyone who loves the sounds of the ‘60s, and enjoys a few laughs along the way, this show is one not to be missed! Performance: Sunday 1 October, 7.30pm, The Hawth Studio. Tickets: £19 (discounts: £17.50), available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting hawth.co.uk

Who says you can’t have it all?
You are looking for a luxury detached house within walking distance of Horsham town centre. You want a peaceful environ-
ment in a select cul-de-sac of only 4 quality detached homes. Despite the convenient location you want to be able to park your cars in your own garage and
ample driveway that allows for visitors as well. You want to enjoy countryside walks within a few minutes. Our purchasers told us they
had been looking for just this combination of features for some time, and had really struggled to find a home that fulfilled all their expectations in respect of the quality of house and the location until they found The Gorings. So it is not surprising that 3 of the four gorgeous homes in this select cul-de-sac close to Horsham town centre and adjoining countryside have been snapped up due to the rarity of such a combination. The 4th and final 4 bedroom detached home is nearly ready and we’re looking to move in the lucky buyer well before Christmas so they can enjoy everything it has to offer. Within walking distance of the town centre and restaurant quarter, mainline train station, countryside walks and views, and great schools within easy reach, this last luxury new home at The Gorings really is something very special and not to be missed. Offering additional features such as a downstairs shower room as well as two further bathrooms with contemporary sanitary ware, an open plan designer kitchen and breakfast area, all opening in to a walled garden, this home combines the best of traditional build with contemporary living and needs to be seen to appreciate just what a special package this is before it’s too late. Call us on 07557851535 or email us on sales@churchlands.co.uk to find out more before it’s too late.
@Home Estates now in the top 100 UK Estate Agents
Quot The D e is Post trict when book ing
Just 2 years since launching, Southwater based @Home Estates are celebrating a major success having been voted one of the UK’s top 100 Estate and Letting Agents at the prestigious EA (Estate Agent) Masters 2017 awards ceremony. The awards were the result of the most extensive independent research into and study of the British estate agency business by The Property Academy. The research carried out in conjunction with Right Move focused on customer service and involved thousands of different data points. In total 25,000 branches were involved as well as 1 million property listings, making @Home’s success all the more remarkable. It’s not the first award for this relatively new agency, which has already won the All Agent’s awards for Estate Agent of the Year 2016 for Southwater and best Estate Agent and Best Overall Agency (including lettings) of the
Year 2016 for the RH13 region. @ Home director Paul Davies won best person in estate agency for RH13 and this year, @Home have also won best agency in Horsham at the British Property Awards. Director Paul Davies was ecstatic about the news of this latest award: “This is the equivalent to the Oscars for the estate agency world and I am so thrilled that @Home is listed in the top 100. It’s the result of 2 years of hard work by my incredibly dedicated team. And I’m sure our success is because we put customer service at the very heart of everything we do and always go that extra mile. There was a need in estate agency for a different, better approach and we’ve met that need.” You’ll find @Home at 1st Floor, Beeson House, Lintot Square, Southwater or you can visit their website at http://www.athomeestates.uk

Pulborough submerged by rampant Dartfordians Saturday September 23 – London 2 South East Dartfordians 118 0 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough travelled to Bexley, Kent to meet Dartfordians in an encounter that they would prefer not to have had. Last season Boro were crowned champions of the London SE3 League, earning them well-deserved promotion to their highest ever level, but, at the moment the step up is proving to be a severe challenge. Hit by physically inflicted injuries and substantial non availability, leaving them with just five experienced players Boro were obliged to field virtually their second team and a colt, with just one forward in the line up from the previous week. They trailed by 50 points at the break and were unable to get on the scoreboard in the second half, during which Dartfordians more than doubled their score. Boro Coach Clayton Saunders told the
District Post: “Realistically, we didn’t expect to win this game, but we got off to a reasonable start, holding them at first and hitting the posts with a kick, and we kept them at bay for 18 minutes in the second half, too. But, up against one of the strong Metropolitan sides our inexperience showed and we were overwhelmed. We’ve done some recruiting but unfortunately none of the new signings were around for the Dartfordians game. Obviously, the boys were a bit demoralised but we’ve always had a good home record so we’re targeting some of the fixtures at our ground – perhaps we’ve lulled some of our future opposition into a sense of complacency! We’re entertaining Dover this Saturday (30th) – they scored 21 points against Hove, against whom we got 25 and, given a full side, our forwards are OK. Until our second team game was called off we thought we’d have to concede the Dartfordians game, which would have cost us five penalty points, so it could have been worse and at least we fulfilled the fixture.

High-scoring Horsham trounce beleaguered Barking Photos by Richard Ordidge
Horsham Joggers weekly round up
Saturday September 23 – London 2 South East Horsham 88 10 Barking Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham welcomed Barking to Coolhurst for the first encounter between the teams, the green and whites winning handsomely with 14 tries, securing their third consecutive win in as many
starts with 14 points out of the maximum 15 available. With the Lions – Horsham 2nd XV – also notching up a hat trick of wins it was another excellent weekend for the club. Former National League side Barking has a proud history encompassing internationals, but players and officials have moved on, resulting in successive relegations, leaving the side struggling. However, that must not detract from an out-
standing Horsham performance featuring sure handling and good passing build ups, Michael Tredgett, Kyle Fairs, Jonny Goward and Johnny Ordidge being among those deserving special mention in an all round team win displaying fast running - and accurate place kicking from skipper Tom Johnson. Horsham started with intent, Nick Bell completing a try in the opening seconds, quickly followed by another from Man of the Match Mike Watts, celebrating his return to the club with the first of his five tries. Tom Blewitt then added to Barking’s misery as, with two Johnson conversions, they were 19-0 adrift within 10 minutes. Joe Wilde then kicked over the defence, gathered and touched town before Adam Clarkson got home under the posts. Barking then, having previously failed with a seemingly certain penalty opportunity, did kick three points, but Horsham were unstoppable, Emmett O’Rahilly scoring twice either side of two more Watts tries for the hosts to lead 59-3 at the break, courtesy of further Johnson conversions. Restarting, Horsham increased their tally - Wilde and Johnson combining to add seven more points, but there was to be no addition to the score for 25 minutes, until Ordidge and then Watts completed further tries, taking the score, with Johnson’s boot, to 78-3. Creditably, Barking never gave up - one of their Lithuanian players, Vytautus Mudingis bulldozing over for Jake Baker to convert. However, Horsham were not done, Josh Mills and then Watts adding tries to finish on 88-10. Post game, happy Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “We had several senior players missing, but our pace and execution proved decisive. We slackened off a bit in the second half and we’ll look at that. We’ve got some challenging fixtures coming up but we’ll have some key players returning.” This Saturday Horsham, now third, shaded by Dartfordians on points difference, travel to strongly fancied Beckenham, who, though, have been narrowly defeated in their last two games.
Dream start for Horsham Ladies Hockey Saturday September 23 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 4 0 Maidenhead
An incredible 92 Horsham Joggers ran the Barns Green Half Marathon and this was won again by Neil Boniface in 1-10-15 to further cement his club legend status. Thirty club members signed up for the 10K race with Paul Oakley the first clubman home, in fourth place, in 37-27. Further afield John Willcox ran the Berlin Marathon in 3-17-43 in aid of the Prostate Cancer
UK charity. This was the final leg of John’s four challenges as part of his 50th birthday celebrations. Previous challenges were the Brighton marathon, riding in one day up all three accents of Mont Ventoux in Provence and cycling the 2017 Ride London-Surrey 100. These challenges have enabled John to raise an amazing £5200 for the charity.
Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Early last season Maidenhead beat Horsham 2 nil at home, but Horsham banished that memory last Saturday, doubling the dose with an impressive win, getting their new season off to the best possible start. After successfully keeping visiting Maidenhead at bay in the goal-less first half, Horsham were soon on the scoreboard after the break. Enjoying the excellent facilities in the
ladies’ debut league appearance at Christs Hospital School, new signing Bex Ross – formerly with Sevenoaks – scored twice, before returning stalwart Fran Crossley did the same, Bex enthusing: “We upped our intensity in the second half and scored four good team goals!” Fran added: “For some reason Maidenhead changed their goalkeeper at the start of the second half and we immediately scored twice, and by the time the original keeper returned we had the upper hand! Its great to be back at the club with such an excellent result.” New Coach, Wales international Chris Bowen, is clearly impressed with his new charges, telling the District Post: “We’ve got a great bunch of girls
here, they’re getting on famously and all working hard. We’ve still got things to improve on but we’re off to a terrific start. It was a bit cagey in the first half, but once we’d scored our first two goals we really opened them up.” Horsham’s clean sheet goalkeeper, Captain Hannah Simpson said: “Chris is pushing us – he’s got some great ideas. We’re all delighted with our start to the new season and enthusiastically looking forward to the games coming up.” This Saturday Horsham Ladies cross the Surrey border to take on Epsom, who were thrashed 7-1 at Tulse Hill & Dulwich on the opening week of the season.

YMCA progress through to the FA Vase First Round Proper
Horsham undone by persistent Sittingbourne Saturday September 23 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 1 5 Sittingbourne

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Saturday 23 – Buildbase FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round Horsham YMCA 3 1 Langney Wanderers Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA progressed to the next round of the FA Vase, seeing off Eastbourne’s Langney Wanderers from the league below - Southern Combination Division 1 - relatively comfortably. YM started as they meant to proceed with attacks, spearheaded by Dave Brown on the right and the tactics paid dividends in the tenth minute when Sam Schaff, returning from in-
jury, found the net, his brilliant looping header sailing over the opposition keeper. YM continued pressing, but, against the run of play, it was Langney that scored next when Rhys White took advantage of a YM defensive lapse, giving goalkeeper Aaron Jeal no chance of averting the equaliser. Spurred on, the visitors then caused anxiety in the YM camp, but fortunately, with a save seemingly impossible, their shot hit the post. But, YM rallied and, following another corner, Liam Humphries latched onto a loose ball in the area, putting YM back in front on the stroke of half time. After the break YM increased their control of the game, displaying superior fitness
and individual skills as the visitors tired. YM, though, suffered a set back when Joe Shelley was sent off to the bemusement of spectators. However, ten man YM recovered to make further raids on the Langney goal, but, when Dan Evans took delivery of a Dave Brown supply and looked threatening, he was up-ended, paving the way for Luke Gedling to fire home the resultant penalty in the dying minutes. In the First Round Proper on Saturday October 21, YM have a challenging trip to Thatcham Town. Their Berkshire hosts have won four of their last five games in The Uhlsport Hellenic Premier Division, in which they are currently fourth.
Injury hit Horsham’s erratic season continued as they crashed to their second consecutive 5 goal defeat to a Kent side, enduring their third straight loss at their temporary Lancing home, where they had won their three opening matches. Third in the league Sittingbourne, beaten just once in 8 starts, scored in the opening minutes from a corner, Ben Gorham helping the ball over the line at the far post. Then, the Kent side’s Kane Rowland hit the woodwork for a second time before Rob O’Toole sought a Horsham equaliser, only to be stymied. But, Sittingbourne – the Brickies – did not have to wait long to increase their lead, Bola Dawodu coolly finishing – with his fifth goal in six games – by slotting past onrushing Hornets’ keeper Josh James. Horsham responded, but a chance for Charlie Farmer and two for O’Toole all went begging as the first half ended with the visitors leading 2-0. Resuming, Horsham demonstrated more positive intent, but were off target and it was the Brickies who delivered a decisive blow when, with
Horsham’s defence stranded up-field, Miles Cornwell made no mistake into an empty net – his classic breakaway goal notching up Sittingbourne’s third, Cornwell’s first of the season - despite appeals for offside. However, the Hornets promptly got on the score sheet, O’Toole’s netting his eighth of the campaign with an outstanding header eluding visiting keeper Darren Hawkes. James then kept the Brickies at bay before, attempting to reduce the deficit, O’Toole missed scoring again by a whisker. Sittingbourne, though, soon reasserted their authority with an impressive build-up resulting in their fourth goal, from a Kane Philip left foot screamer in the 80th minute. The Brickies then twisted the knife with a fifth, Cornwell getting lucky when the ball escaped from James’s clutches to go in off the post. In need of a win, Horsham host eighth placed Cray Wanderers this Saturday. With three wins and four draws Cray have only been overturned once and have conceded just six goals (a record only matched by league leaders Whyteleafe). Then, on Tuesday, October 3, the Hornets travel to near neighbours Shoreham. Hovering just above the league basement, Shoreham were beaten 3-0 by Horsham in August.
YMCA tormented by lowly Arundel in lack lustre second half Photos by Tim Hewlett
Tuesday September 26 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Div Arundel 3 1 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Prior to this game Arundel had the unenviable record of “Played 7 Lost 7” and, having
conceded 23 goals, were marooned at the bottom of the table, but, against Horsham YMCA they were worthy winners. In the first half YM had five corners, two disallowed goals and hit both the crossbar and the post. They could have been three nil up at the break, yet, the longer the game went on the less and less likely they looked like
winning. YM began by testing the Arundel defence and appeared to be getting closer to scoring, but, against the run of play, an opportunist shot from Dion Jarvis put the hosts ahead after a quarter of an hour with Aaron Jeal in the YM goal only able to get his finger tips onto a curler into the top right corner. Two minutes later YM had a second goal ruled
ineligible and after other chances had come and gone, trailed 1-0 at the break. Resuming, both sides had opportunities, but YM’s frustration boiled over, when a trip in the area donated a penalty, which Josh Biggs converted in style. YM were now giving the ball away and, with a lack of composure in front of goal, finessing too much
instead of shooting when they did have possibilities. Then, in the 70th minute the ball came out to the right for Biggs to convert through the open YM defence. Arundel were battling for their lives, and while the ball often fell nicely for them, they were working hard as a spirited team and challenging for everything. YM’s only consolation was that their goal was the goal of the match, Sam Schaaf hooking in overhead from an angle at the edge of the box. He almost scored again soon after the restart, but blasted just over and, with YM 3-1 down, the final whistle came as something of a relief, Manager Peter Buckland saying: “We created chance after chance in the first half and having those two goals disallowed was a killer. We were without key players, but no excuses they wanted to win more than we did and after that performance some players will be leaving.” On Saturday YM return home for another league fixture - against Worthing United, whom they beat 5-0 in the Peter Bentley Cup

Neil Boniface wins the Barns Green Half Marathon again!
Winner Neil Boniface Barns Green Half Marathon Sunday September 24 Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last Sunday’s Barns Green Half Marathon and 10K race – in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice - were run in ideal conditions, a traditional bonus on the village’s iconic annual sporting day. And, this year there were record numbers of entrants, encouraged by a huge crowd of supporters and spectators, all revelling in the unbeatable carnival atmosphere. The funfair was in full swing and enticing breakfast aromas wafted across from the refreshment stalls as Diane Eggitt conducted an energetic warm up. The course was adorned with encouraging posters and The Offbeats - local saxophonists Jane, Sue and Ali - accompanied keyboard player Richard and Chris on the double base, performing lively music “to give the runners a boost!” The half marathon marked the birthday of this year’s starter,
John Booker who has run in all 35 Barns Green Half Marathons Horsham MP Jeremy Quin, who launched the runners with his best wishes, explaining that he was disappointed not to be able to participate in the 10K race as intended because of injuring his back during a training run. Neil Boniface of Horsham Joggers romped home with a time of 1 hour ten minutes and 15 seconds, reprising his wins in 2000, 2013 and 2014 and victory in last year’s 10K race, telling the District Post: “It was tough and I’ll pay for it tomorrow! I was beginning to run out of legs, but it’ll stand me in good stead for the cross country event I’m doing next week.” Paul Navesey was second in 1.11.50, while triathlon competitor Bethan Male was the first lady in 1.27.41, ahead of Sue Fry (1.28.18), Bethan quipping: “I’m only smiling because its over!” The 10K event was started by Wendy Buckingham, who has a poignant reason to support St Catherine’s Hospice. With her three young daughters by her side, Wendy said: “Sadly, I lost my husband all too young but the way St
Catherine’s looked after him was truly fantastic and their aftercare was so supportive for me and the girls at such a difficult time. So, I’m here to encourage everyone to
Its getting tougher because as I get older I’m doing less training, but I’m looking forward to next year John Booker
contribute towards the wonderful service that they provide.” Jeremy Quin echoed Wendy’s sentiments, saying: “St Catherine’s cared for my mother-in-law – they are magnificent and I can’t praise them enough.” Michaela Clements, the hospice’s events organiser hoped that the day would raise £10,000 for the charity to help fund their work, including
Photos by John Lines many home visits. In only its second year the 10K race attracted over 600 runners and was won by Bernie Spangall in 33.11, Kat Owens, getting in trim for the Chicago full marathon, led the ladies home in 40.42. The day’s fun runners, featured an owl, batman and a leprechaun - otherwise known as Sam Boylett - the fancy dress winner telling us: “I trained as a vet and ran to raise £500 for Holbrook Animal Rescue to help them to continue their excellent work.” Many of the runners were sponsored and the fun entrants included sisters Emily and Charlotte (CJ) White, Horsham Hockey Club players, who passed stewards from the club en route, a beaming Emily saying: “I managed to improve on my personal best, so I’m really please with that!” In addition to musicians playing around the course, the Sussex Steel ensemble and the Horsham Accordion Band entertained everyone on the green alongside the village club. The runners were all chip-timed and every
participant was given a medal. After soothing post race massages, the half marathon winners each received cheques for £250 and a glass decanter. And, to mark the 35th running of the half marathon, the nearby Linseed Farm at Muntham donated special baskets filled with their health products. A special presentation was made to John Booker, the only person to compete in every race, John commenting: “Its getting tougher because as I get older I’m doing less training, but I’m looking forward to next year!” At the awards ceremony Jeremy Quin spoke for all present, praising “the superb organisation of the marvellous Barns Green Half Marathon and 10K Committee.” Committee mainstays include Race Director Vernon Jennings, first involved in 1983, Nigel Currie, and Race Secretary Sue Parillon, who told us: “Next year’s race is on Sunday September 30 and runners can enrol now, taking advantage of our special early bird offer via www.barnsgreen-half.org.uk.”
