Half term fun in Horsham town centre planned for next week Horsham District Council and its partners have organised a half term in Horsham’s town centre that’s brimming with fun activities, running from Saturday 21 October until Saturday 28 October. For younger children, the Halloween Trick or Treat Trail will run all week and will involve 26 town businesses offering treats or tricks, with a chance to win cash prizes from Horsham Rotary. Participants will be required to pick up all of the clues as they discover their locations. A Halloween party with a fancy dress competition, in and around the Carfax local produce market, will take place on Saturday 28 October, starting around 10am. In aid of BBC Children in Need, Pudsey Bear will be hosting a Pudsey and Pals Mascot Party on the Carfax bandstand, from 10am on Thursday 26 October. The event, organised by Horsham Rotary Club and partners, will involve singing, dancing and lots of fantastic activities. Horsham’s Carfax will play host, for the second year run-

ning, to the Sussex Food and Drink Awards Street Food Finals on Sunday 22 October. Organisers are inviting all to “Come along and taste the food on offer then cast your vote for the ten best street food providers in Sussex.” Entertainment will also be provided. For fashion lovers, young and the young at heart, there will be an amazing collection of designer shoes at Horsham Museum, the Irregular Choice Exhibition, open every day except Sundays. Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, commented: “Horsham will be a fun place to be this October half term holiday with the return of lots of firm favourites, such as the Trick or Treat Trail and the BBC Children in Need Mascot Party for younger children and the new addition of the Street Food Finals. Sussex Police Constable inspires 24- Chief Executive Tom Crowley to hour park run and raises over £2,500 leave Horsham District Council

No stranger to running or park runs, PC James Munden runs regularly with Horsham Joggers in his free time. But over the summer, he decided to take his hobby one step further and commit to organising a 24-hour running event in Horsham Park on 29 September to raise money for Chestnut Tree House – the children’s hospice for Sussex and South East Hampshire. What began as a conversation with a colleague and old college friend started taking on a life of its own when James posted the event on Facebook. In addition to 10 colleagues from Sussex Police, the 24-hour Horsham Park Run attracted people from a range of local running and community groups, including Horsham Joggers, Mel’s Milers, HAODS, Crawley Run Crew, OMF, Lancing Eagles, and Saints and Sinners, raising a massive £2,562 for Chestnut Tree House. James explained: “Chestnut Tree House is Sussex Police’s Charity of the Year, which is one reason why I wanted to do this. But I’m also well aware of the importance of the hospice and its care team, as they have helped one of my colleagues and friends. The specialist care services they offer to local children and their families is invaluable, and I’m so pleased to be able to do something to help. “I set myself a target of £900 when I decided on this challenge, and am ecstatic to have raised almost three times this amount through a combination of online donations, a cake sale, and bucket collections on the day.” 136 runners took part in the 24hour Horsham Park Run, covering 826 miles in total. At least one person was running at all times – complete with head-torches during the night – with people covering varying distances, from one to 44 miles. The first runners set off at 9am on Friday 29 September and the event finished with the regular Horsham parkrun participants at 9am the following morning. Jayne Todd, Community Fundraiser at Chestnut Tree House, said: “We are incredibly grateful

to James for taking the time to organise this event. Sussex Police have been incredibly supportive all year, but we’re really touched by how much effort people are going to in their own time to raise money and awareness for us. “We need to raise £6,850 every day to provide all the specialist care services, both at the hospice and out in the community, and we rely heavily on the support of local people and organisations. The amount the 24-hour Horsham Park Run has raised will pay for a child to have a three-night break at Chestnut Tree House, as well as giving two children the chance to visit for the day and enjoy a range

of activities. We would like to say a massive thank you to James, and everyone who took part to help raise these vital funds.” Chestnut Tree House provides care and support to around 300 children with life-shortening conditions and their families across East Sussex, West Sussex, Brighton and Hove and South East Hampshire. The cost of providing this vital service is over £3.5 million per year, yet the hospice receives less than 7% central government funding so relies heavily on the support of the local community to continue providing vital care to local children and families.

Chief Executive of Horsham District Council, Tom Crowley, has announced his decision to retire next April. After spending several years with councils in South Wales and London, Tom came to Horsham in 1980 as a planning draughtsman. After qualifying as a Chartered Town Planner in 1986 he subsequently had a number of senior roles at Horsham and at local authorities in Surrey and West Sussex before returning to Horsham as Chief Executive in 2005. Tom said: “After 42 years in local government, I have decided that the time is right to find some new and different challenges. It has been an honour and a privilege to have served as our council’s Chief Executive for the last twelve years. During that time we have faced many tough challenges but despite them we have continued to deliver high quality services and maintain sound finances. This has only been possible as a result of the teamwork between officers and councillors and our shared commitment to public service and community leadership.” Commenting on the announcement, earlier this month, Council Leader Ray Dawe said: “Tom has been a very committed Chief Executive who has given many years of dedicated service to this council and Horsham district. “He has led the process of transforming the way our council works during a time of great change in local government with enormous challenges, and he leaves the council in a really strong position. We remain

financially sound, we have a hardworking and motivated workforce and, in contrast to many other councils, we have been able to maintain all our services whilst progressing our long standing ambition of making the district an even better place. “Under Tom‘s leadership we have seen many notable achievements. In addition to transforming the way we work and moving our offices to Parkside, we secured the John Lewis and Waitrose development, our new leisure centre at Broadbridge Heath and the recent purchase of the Forum development in Horsham town centre. “We will now take steps to ensure that the Council puts in place the management expertise to lead our officer team when Tom leaves us next April. We will confirm details within the next two weeks.”

You must rank the schools in order of preference. Richard Place Dobson, Crawley based Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, have successfully walked 109 miles in aid of The Springboard Project. The walk not only raised money for this very worthwhile cause but also represented a milestone for RPD, as it is the number of years the Firm has been established. The charity walk saw two RPD teams walk 54.5 miles each, with one team walking along the North Downs route and the other across the South Downs. Each team were

joined by a purple giraffe soft toy to represent The Springboard Project’s mascot and were commissioned with a selfie challenge along the way. Photo requests included a selfie with a tandem, a person wearing wellies and even the team members acting out the YMCA with someone they met on route. The three day event ended on Saturday 16 September, with both teams walking the final three miles to the finish point at the Springboard Project House in Horsham, for a celebratory bar-

beque with friends and family. The Springboard Project were chosen in April, as Richard Place Dobson’s Charity of the Year, and the Firm will continue to support them through other fundraising events until the end of March 2018. The Firm is thrilled to have already exceeded their £3,000 fundraising target set for the year, with just over £3,200 raised to date. The Springboard Project provides inclusive leisure and play opportunities for families with young children, including those with disabilities, with centres based in both Horsham and Crawley. Currently the charity supports more than 450 families a year plus a further 262 more disabled children and teenagers with their short breaks groups. The funds raised will provide valuable support for the ongoing running costs of the charity, which has just celebrated its 25th year. Matthew Tyson, Director at Richard Place Dobson, said: “Even with many pairs of sore feet, the whole team really enjoyed walking for such a fantastic cause and we’re pleased to have gone beyond our fundraising goal with time to spare. It’s amazing what a little purple giraffe can do to get complete strangers to make donations!”

West Sussex families can now apply for a school place for children due to start primary or infant school or transfer to a junior school in September 2018. Applications opened earlier this month and will close on Monday 15 January 2018. If your child was born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014, they will be eligible to start school in the school year beginning September 2018. If your child was born between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011 and attends an infant school, they must transfer to a junior school in the school year beginning September 2018. Pudsey and friends return to Horsham for Children in Need next week Pudsey Bear will be in town this coming half term on Thursday October 26 when Horsham Rotary Club, in conjunction with Horsham Markets, will be putting on what has now become the annual Horsham BBC Children in Need appeal party from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Rotary are one of the official National Partners of Children in Need and this year the party in the Carfax promises to be bigger, better and more fun filled than ever before. Pudsey Bear will be joined by a number of his mascot friends, who will perform three ‘sing along’ fun shows with TV’s Dave Benson Phillips on the bandstand at 11:30, 12:30 and 1:30. Another big attraction this year, local plant hire specialists, the Les Searle Group, are running their fantastic

steam bus, which is always a favourite with young and old alike. Pudsey has promised to have a few rides on the bus himself, so you may get a trip around the town with the big bear on board. In addition, there will be children’s rides provided by Benson’s Funfairs, a thrilling bungee trampoline, fun and games with the WSCC Family Centre, and sporting activities and games provided by the staff from the Pavilions and Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centres. Three stunning replica Fast & Furious cars, and a number of Birds of Prey from Huxley’s, will provide superb photo opportunities for the children and, of course, for the grown-ups too! The Weald’s biggest ever Future Choices Fair

On Wednesday 4 October, The Weald School opened its doors for its 24th Future Choices Fair, the flagship event in their rolling careers programme. With over 600 attendees, the fair was open to students across all year groups, parents and members of the local community. The event is designed to empower students to make informed decisions about their future choices, whether they are considering apprenticeships, further or higher education or employment. Throughout the evening, students networked with business professionals, gaining a first hand insight into entry routes and experience required to break into particular industries, along with employability skills and raising awareness of the number of career opportunities available in the world

of work. This year’s fair was host to a record breaking 60 exhibitors, showcasing employers such as RSM Accountancy & Tax Consultants, Thales UK, Thomas Keating Ltd, Spellman Electronics, Assurity Consulting, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust and PMW Communications; Further and Higher Education Institutions Northbrook College, Chichester College, and of course our very own outstanding Weald Sixth Form; Universities of Oxford, Kent, Dundee, York and Winchester and Apprenticeships providers West Sussex County Council, Parenta, Nestle and Jace Training. Parallel interactive sessions also ran alongside the exhibition about the new Degree Apprenticeships and The Weald’s own post 16 options evening.

Sarah Wilson, Careers and Work Experience Manager at The Weald, explained why the school places such importance on events like these: “with so many options and so much information now available, future choice planning can be a complicated process. We want to make it easy and engaging for all students. Along with support from us and their families, it’s important students take the opportunity to think about their future and take ownership of these big decisions early on. “Feedback from our exhibitors showed the students to be engaged, asking lots of good questions and really starting to take on board the knowledge that this event can give. It’s never too early to start thinking ahead. Whether you are in year 7 and just starting to understand how the subjects you take are relevant to career choices, or you are in year 13 deciding whether an Apprenticeship is better than a Degree – knowledge is power and we do our absolute best to ensure that every student gains that in the best way possible.” Presentations from the evening are available on the school website. A nutty affair at Horsham’s Waterstones Author/illustrator, Mike Henson, returned to his hometown of Horsham at the weekend to introduce himself, and his books, to the next generation of readers. Visitors to Waterstones bookshop were treated to a morning of story-telling, singing and laughter, followed by some colouring in fun, a book signing and chat with the author. Mike’s first offering, The Nut Stayed Shut, was immediately followed by a song. The catchy little ditty (which the talented author sang, whilst strumming a ukelele!) served as a musical reminder of the story of a squirrel called Rodney and his quest to open a stubborn nut. Rodney, an award-winning nut cracker, meets his match, when he comes across a nut that he can’t open. After a series of hilarious attempts (to crack the nut) fail, Rodney is taught a thing or two about the virtue of patience. After the sing-along, Mike read Surprise! to his young audience. The vibrant picture book keeps everyone guessing, as the story of Badger, who wants to show Rabbit something, unfolds. The lights keep turning off, then on again, to

Assurity supports new Employability course at Collyer’s

Last week Collyer’s welcomed Assurity Consulting’s Ian Robinson (Business Support & HR Manager) and Lara Batley (former Collyer’s student now Marketing Co-ordinator at Assurity). The aim of the busy and insightful session was to help students, who are currently studying the new

and highly rated Collyer’s Employability course in their second year at the college, gain an understanding of how to match and ‘sell’ their skills, knowledge and experience in a covering letter or job application form. The group were also given advice and guidance for future sessions,

which will focus on planning for a job interview and how to predict the key questions they are likely to be asked. Lucy Hargreaves, Employability Programme Co-ordinator, felt the session was a huge success: “It was great to welcome Ian and Lara back to Collyer’s to support our new Employability course. We have designed the programme to help students into the world of work with the help of taught sessions, workshops, trips and a host of guest speakers we have planned throughout the year. The level of engagement, confidence and enthusiasm of Collyer’s students was impressive.” Assurity Consulting currently have two former Collyer’s students as apprentices and are keen to recruit two more per year, as a key part of growing their business. During the session the students were able to ask the experts questions about job applications, interviews and practical tools and techniques to use when looking for

employment. Lucy Hargreaves, who organised the event, said: “Massive thanks go to Ian Robinson and Lara Batley. They are amazing! It was great to see so many students actively engaged in developing the skills required when applying for employment.” Vice Principal Steve Martell, who is teaching the Employability course at Collyer’s, said: “Massive thanks to Ian and Lara and the continued support of Assurity Consulting. The Employability course has started brilliantly and Lucy Hargreaves and I are having an astonishing amount of interest

in what we are doing from businesses, schools and colleges across the region. It is widely regarded as a nationally ground-breaking programme!” Senior Tutor Ian McAlister, who also presents at HE and progression events at Collyer’s said: “The College’s numerous progression activities this year will include guest speakers, mock interviews, employability skills workshops, Not Going to Uni (NG2U) evenings, HE Evenings, HE Fairs, Oxbridge Trips and a host of other events in conjunction with key national, regional and local partner organisations.”

ART FAIR Martin Read At West Sussex County Council’s Horsham HQ a panel of experts, including Consultants on business, public health and transport, spoke and answered questions from around 100 delegates from across the county. The summit was arranged to promote the health and other benefits from cycling – and walking – and to discuss and debate the infrastructure required to enable residents to undertake those activities safely. The audience comprised Councillors, Highway Engineers, Environmental, Planning & Protection Officers and a wide range of other interested parties. Rosemary French, Executive Director of the Gatwick Diamond Initiative opened the event, saying: “Cycling is convenient, saves time and money, with easier parking and promotes health and dependency. People want to cycle and the challenge is to make our roads fit and safe for cycling. Strong leadership is required – as in London – and we have the foremost experts of the country with us.” Then, Dr Kate Bailey – WSCC Consultant in Public Health reminded delegates that: “Cycling is a magic pill, drastically reducing chances of heart disease and cancer! And, regular exercise also cuts the risk of diabetes and dementia – 150 minutes of moderate weekly exercise being necessary to combat our sedentary lifestyles and, although West Sussex is slightly ahead of the UK average regarding physical activity, there is room for considerable improvement.” Dr Rachel Aldred, from

Westminster University compared UK cycling levels with the Netherlands, where 26% of the population cycle for their journeys, as against just 2% in the UK. Good separation from other road users is required to encourage cycling, especially by women, children and older people, routes needing to be safe and direct. Cambridge is our best city for cycling and Manchester, Leicester, Bristol and Bath are making improvements, but there is much to be done elsewhere. Independence is the prize. Andy Ekinsmyth, Head of Transport & Countryside Services, WSCC stressed that cycling and walking are important components of the transport strategy, saying: “Money is in short supply but there are funds and we need a plan with priorities identified. West Sussex fatalities from cycling have increase from 50 to 80 per year, but, improvements have been made in Chichester with Crawley to follow and feasibility studies are being conducted for other areas, including Horsham.” Roger Geffen, Campaigns & Policy Director, Cycling UK advised delegates that there is political will to invest and build space for cycling and that the government is being pressed to commit to getting people cycling to European levels – increasing to 10% of trips by 2025, and 25% by 2050. He added: “The aim is to normalise walking and cycling, improving safety by lowering speed limits and improved cycle training.” Next, Mark Strong, Managing Consultant, Transport Initiatives confirmed that: “The plan is to make cycling and walking the natural choice and we need to identify the improve-

ments required, the preferred routes. And, we are monitoring improvements so that we know what works well.” Phil Jones, MD of Phil Jones Associates told delegates that his company is looking at successful transport schemes around the world, with a variety of ideas and solutions under consideration, and he asked: “Should we have a walking and cycling champion with specific responsibilities - like the Chris Boardman’s role in Greater Manchester?”Questions from the floor covered the narrowness of country roads, the need to automatically design cycling facilities in new developments with safe connecting links, speed limits, the cycle strategy for the Downs Link, whether we are learning from the mistakes of introducing dangerous layouts for cyclists (like Horsham’s Hop Oast roundabout) and how relationships between planners and other interested parties could be bettered. Rosemary French summed up saying: “We have an obesity crisis and children are now restricted to areas not far from home. We are spending so much time looking at screens and need to take much more exercise. Apart from facilitating that, cycling also improves the economy by encouraging people to shop local. Many adults in Britain say they are too frightened to cycle, so improvements are a must. And, as Andrew Gilligan, London’s former cycling czar said: ‘Everyone cycling improves not just their own health but the help of others, too – cycling does not cause pollution!’”

Head to the Weald & Downland Living Museum this Autumn for a fun-packed season of activities as the nights draw in... From Monday 23 - Friday 27 October, children will be encouraged to visit the Weald and Downland Living Museum in fancy dress, where they’ll get hands-on with a great range of Hallowe’en themed activities around the museum’s beautiful 40-acre site*. Activities will vary daily and include: pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, face painting, spine-tingling fireside story telling, arts and crafts activities - such as making skeleton paper puppets - and much more. In addition, the museum will run a series of Museum at Night Story Walks**. Tickets are now on sale for the enchanting walks, which organisers say will offer ‘a truly out of the ordinary experience’. Guests will be guided by lamplight to different spaces around the Museum to hear a series of short night-time stories - some amusing, some mysterious, some peculiar. All of the stories will have a historical root and some will not ensure sweet dreams. At the end of the night,

visitors will gather around an open fire for a spiced warm drink and biscuit. The walks will take place on 27 October and 28 October and are considered by the museum to be unsuitable for under 16s or the faint of heart. However, new this year, a Museum at Night Family Tale Trail will take place on 26 October. Spaces are available to book for the special evening, which is designed for families to enjoy enchanting lamplit walks with spooky happenings, whilst listening to a series of folklore and historical tales of mysterious places, magnificent creatures and magical adventures. The event is deemed suitable for ages 7+. Accompanied children will join a small group to walk to different spaces to hear five twilight tales. *Activities run from 11am 3pm daily and children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. **Tickets for Museum at Night events must be booked in advance. All profits benefit the Museum, which is a registered charity.

Comedy Beats are back in Horsham this month at Horsham YMCA FC and are geared up for some comedy action Since its beginnings, a little over two years ago, Comedy Beats has gone from stregth to stregth, featuring some high profile acts along the way. Co-founder, Mark Coxon, explained: “We set up Comedy Beats a little over two years ago, after a one off show at the Copthorne Social Club and it has now turned in to a thriving local business. “I had been a member of the club for years and was asked to book some acts to put on a comedy show for the members. It went really well so along with another club member we set the company up to see if other venues would be interested in a similar package. Since then we have managed to book gigs in to a further twenty five venues. Almost all of them have then gone on to re-book us.” The show’s success is thanks to the ability to source and use the very best acts from the club circuit. Mark continued: “I have myself been a comedian for the last twenty years and, as a result, have great contacts in the comedy world. We pride ourselves on the quality of our shows and our aim is to bring the very best comedians out of

London and in to communities all over the south-east.” The forthcoming show will feature the excellent Lee Hurst. After he became a household name, from his time as a team captain on They Think it’s All Over, Lee set up his own club called The Backyard in east London. Having worked for him for years, Mark was aware of Lee’s interest in playing some smaller rooms, to run in new material for his forthcoming national tour which starts in the spring of next year: “This will be his fourth show for Comedy Beats in the last few months and the work he is doing is amazing. He has this ability to make new material look highly polished, as if he has been doing a particular routine for years. He is a really talented comedian and this is a great opportunity to see him in a more intimate environment than the theatres he will be playing in on his tour.” Lee will be joined by Australian comic, Colin Cole, whose style is ‘observational’. Colin has been working in the UK for a number of years and is a regular headliner at top

comedy clubs around the country. Drawing from experience of working the circuit alongside him, Mark commented: “He is always closing shows as he is such a safe bet. I must have done well over a hundred gigs with him since we first met and I can honestly say I have never seen him have a bad one.” Mark was keen to comment on the rest of the show’s line up: “The opening act is Tim Clark, not only is he a highly respected comic he also has a real love of football, which made him a perfect choice for this show given the venue. Over a career that has spanned three decades, he has been a regular contributor to Radio 5’s Fighting Talk and has also written speech’s for Graham Taylor and Neil Ruddock. As part of Channel 4’s Sitcom festival he wrote the play The Beautiful Game about two football fans and has toured extensively with Frank Skinner. “Compering the evening will be Kevin McCarthy, who for many years has been the warm up man for the BBC show Later with Jools Holland. He did his first gig for Comedy Beats in Crawley at the beginning of the month and totally smashed it. He has a great reputation for being one of the top MC’s on the circuit. Equally comfortable with delivering highly crafted material or bantering with the audience he has a warm and endearing persona. I am really looking forward to this one and know it will be a great show.” The event takes place at Horsham YMCA Football Club on Saturday 28 October. Music fans from the district who enjoyed Alexandra Dariescu’s superb performance of a Tchaikovsky concerto at Brighton’s Dome recently should enjoy her latest CD. Dariescu won prolonged applause for her impressive playing of the popular Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto Number 1. The piece now features on her latest CD, along with her interpretations of selections from The Nutcracker. While nothing can match the unique intimacy and atmosphere of a live concert, the CD comes very close to catching

the passion and subtlety of the Dome performance. The same confidence shines, whether in cascades of notes or bold chords, and Alexandra sounds relaxed tackling the technical challenge of the long opening movement. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Dariescu combine delightfully on a beguiling opening into the second movement before she shows she can handle its more intricate passages. Her fingers conjure plenty of fire in the third movement, while picking up the melody line with a gentleness of touch. The CD is a good reminder of the high quality of her artistry.

With Horsham’s defence under the cosh, Teddington hit the post in

the opening minutes. Then, Louisa Denman and Bex Ross responded for Horsham with Fran Crossley, but to no avail. As Horsham’s possession increased a ball screamed across the Teddington goal and a Bex backhander evaded the net before a short corner was pushed away. But, the visitors also had chances and in a frenetic passage of play, Fran Crossley completed an excellent save on the line, the first half concluding without either side able to secure an advantage. After the break Teddington had three short corners in quick suc-

cession, the third of which was scrambled in. The goal was initially disallowed but after lengthy discussion between the umpires, the whistle went and Teddington were one up. Horsham soon had three short corners of their own and Louisa Denman won the ball on the right for another set piece and, although the game ended with a wave of Horsham attacks, including another short corner, the sustained pressure was unable to produce an equaliser when at least sharing the points would have been a fair result. Horsham Coach Chris Bowen told the District Post: “We opened them up but just couldn’t get the ball in today. We’ve got plenty to work on but with our great young players we’re doing well – that was the best game that we’ve had to date.” Team Manager Jane Denman added: “Teddington were very good, just a bit better than us on the day!” Horsham Hockey Chairman, Nick Evans – enjoying his 40th season at the club – added: “The girls played well today against a much bigger, physical side.” Horsham remain second and this Saturday travel to play Wimbledon 1A. In the opening two weeks of the season OCs had beaten London Wayfarers and Bromley & Beckenham, two seasoned clubs, so they were likely to be a challenge, and their lion’s share of the early possession with a wave of attacks and a shot across goal confirmed that. But, Horsham defended well, Captain Andy Isaacs pulling off some excellent saves. And, Horsham traded short corners – four apiece up to half time - when the score remained goal-less. After the restart Isaacs was in action again and with goals hard to come by it seemed that the first team to score might have netted the decider, until in a fast and furious period, either side of short corners,

OCs notched up a hat trick of field goals in three minutes. Jay Harman found the net first, before in a period of intense, rampant pressure, Nathan Hill and then Matthew Laidman both fired home. Horsham earned a short themselves, but the game was up before OCs put the icing on their cake when Ben Wilson converted a short corner with the last hit of the match. Horsham missed Freddie Campbell and Dom Male in midfield and would have benefited from John Burroughs’ ball retention skills. They are a young team, still developing, whereas OCs are strong and experienced, Horsham coach Titch Hanspal saying: “They’re a top side and kept pressing and we needed to keep on it all of the time – as soon as they had an opportunity they seized it.” Andy Isaacs added: “They just kept coming at us, and then without a break they whacked in three goals – bang, bang, bang.” Horsham drop to eighth with the same number of points as the three teams below them. Harry Mailer – makes tracks in Schools progress to National Competition the FunCup Championship

Motor Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter Harry Mailer from Partridge Green has only just reached 18, but he is already a highly respected endurance driver. In the 90s Harry’s father Nick raced VW Beetles around Brands Hatch and other iconic tracks, so Harry was given a go-kart by his parents on his eighth birthday and was soon winning trophies as to the manor born. After sailing through cadet stages he carried off his first major prize, starring at both the Camberley and Forest Edge Kart Clubs. Then, at 14 he joined the Ginetta Junior Championship and this year he has been competing

in the UK FunCup Championship, supported by Iron Maiden’s Trooper beer brand. And, to round off the season, four teams were in contention for the UK title. Races can last up to eight hours – concentration and stamina is required. Nick Mailer told the District Post: “Some of the big events at the major circuits attract huge crowds, but Harry has taken to it naturally and talking to the other race enthusiasts has really built up his confidence. Anthony Reid, one of his team mates has been racing a long time and is a great mentor.” The concept of the FunCup Championship was originally conceived in Belgium, based on the success of endurance karting with the objective of providing

cost effective, close, exciting, and, above all, good fun racing with regular grids sometimes exceeding 30 of the specially strengthened single seater cars. At the final race day Harry started in 20th position and the car was not handling well, but he managed to get it up to 10th as it improved while the tyres wore in, then, working with Reid, they managed to push through into the top four. Nick continued: “Harry took the penultimate stint fighting for and getting the lead with a three second advantage. Another team mate, Jake Rattenbury, had transferred from Snetterton by helicopter, but a braking error dropped the car back and Team Trooper finished third in the championship – a major achievement in Harry’s first season when you consider that they race against experienced pros, including The Stig, and they can spend almost all day in the car.” Having left Ardingly College Harry Mailer is now studying economics at Canterbury University, giving full rein to his maths talent, but racing is in his blood and he’s itching to get back onto the track, dad Nick saying: “Because of his studies Harry can’t participate in winter racing for the moment, but he’s very keen to race abroad and has set his heart on competing in the Le Mans 24 Hour Race and he’s working towards that!” The FunCup Championship was shown on Motorsport TV and there are clips of Harry Mailer on YouTube and Facebook.

In the whole tournament, determined and skillful St Peters played eight matches without conceding a goal. difference. In the early exchanges the Hornets’ Scott Kirkwood and the Rams’ Tom Chapman had chances, but both were thwarted by opposing defences. Then, half way through the first half, after sustained pressure from the Rams, Alfie Paxman’s shot was pushed onto the post by Michael Hunter in the Hornets’ goal. Rams’ keeper Luke Watkins was also in action to deny first Liam MacDevitt and then, twice, George Landais – latterly from a corner.

With the Hornets enjoying more of the ball, a Josh Street foray came to nought, ahead of Chapman again testing the Hornets, but the score remained goal-less at the break. The Rams created early opportunities on the resumption, but Hunter kept Jake Munday’s strike at bay until Charlie Farmer was unable to head home a Hornets free kick. The goalkeepers were busy at both ends, but Ramsgate took the lead after 15 minutes when the ubiquitous Paxman collected a supply and chased through from the half way line to crash his left foot strike into the goal. The Hornets made changes and responded with attacks, and although Chapman might have put the game out of reach for the Rams, Darren Boswell missed out on levelling the score. Next, Chapman was denied again and Toby House and Joe Shelley’s attempts to find an equaliser were also unsuccessful. Chapman then shaved the far post, the Hornets quickly launching a retaliatory attack – only to see Landais’s flooring unrewarded by a seemingly certain penalty. Two more Hornets’ efforts were kept out, giving Ramsgate three valuable points catapulting them to fifteenth in the table and leaving Horsham, still twentieth, in need of a win.

the excellent win at Saltdean last Saturday YM played with confidence, applying early pressure to earn two corners. A Sam Schaaf header was gathered by Dan Rose in the Bexhill goal before Tom Frankland was just unable to latch onto a cross, then a Phil Johnson foray was scrambled away. Rose was setting off on more voyages than Christopher Columbus, creating opportunities, but despite additional corners and further attempts from Johnson, Schaaf and Frankland, YM were unable to get on the score sheet. Meanwhile, YM keeper Aaron Jeal was negating the occasional Bexhill attack

and the score remained 0-0 at the break. YM, though, scored soon after the restart when Mark Cave followed up his goal at Saltdean with one at home. YM were really thrusting now, corners resulting, and in the 52nd minute a Bexhill own goal doubled the lead. Bexhill had a corner themselves, but blasted over, until, 20 minutes into the half Schaaf put the result beyond all doubt. Bexhill had their moments, but not often, the game ending with persistent YM possession and the visitors under stress. Post match, YM Manager Peter Buckland said: “We’ve still got injury problems so it was great for us to have Phil Johnson back. In the cup a win is all that matters and I wasn’t worried at half time because I felt that we’d get through, which we did without too much difficulty.” On Saturday YM travel to Waterside Park to take on Thatcham Town in the first round of the FA Vase. Thatcham are in contention with the leading group in the uhlsport Hellenic League. Then, unless there is a replay of the Thatcham game, on Tuesday (24th) Eastbourne Town, from the upper reaches of the table, visit Gorings Mead for a league match, in the teams’ first encounter of the season. Parafix Sussex Senior Cup news – in Round 2 YM will travel to Lewes’s historic Dripping Pan to play the current Bostik South Division leaders, the league above YM, on a date to be confirmed.

Impressive YMCA silence high-flying Saltdean Saturday October 14 - Southern Combination Football League – Premier Div Sattdean United 1 3 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Not content with sharing the points with Chichester City last Saturday, Horsham YMCA went one better last weekend, when they took all three from another upper table opponent – Saltdean United – the Tigers. Undaunted by the Tigers’ impressive home record (they were last beaten at their Hill Park fiefdom on August 12), YM took the lead in the 24th minute, when Luke Gedling finished off the rebound from Sam Schaaf’s strike. Earlier Aaron Jeal in the YM goal had kept the Tigers out, then, after YM had scored, the keeper impressed again when he snuffed out the rebound shot after Saltdean’s penalty had found the post. Trailing 0-1 at the break, the Tigers restarted strongly, and Rob O’Toole, newly signed from Horsham and no stranger to the score sheet, soon drew the hosts level. YM, though, responded positively, creating inviting, but unfulfilled

opportunities, first when nobody was in position to bang home a cross into the empty Tigers’ net and then when Schaaf was unable to complete. But, after those frustrations they promptly went in front again as a result of Mark Cave’s header. Shortly after that Phil Johnson came on and displayed several of his trademark forays, almost immediately setting up a goal, but his pass just evaded Schaaf. With YM seeking to put the game beyond reach and Saltdean eager to claw their way back into contention, there was pressure negated by defences at both ends, until Liam Humphreys converted the last of a series of YM strikes, after which they successfully closed out the game for the final nerve-wracking 10 minutes. Ecstatic YM Manager Peter Buckland enthused about the team’s outstanding showing against title contenders Saltdean, saying: “Picking a Man of the Match is not easy because it was an excellent all round performance with good contributions from everyone, but I nominate Luke Gedling because of his composure and calm leadership - and he set the game up for us with the first goal.”

Last gasp equaliser denies Hornets in six-goal thriller Tuesday October 17 – Bostik Football League South Division Hastings United 3 3 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Hastings’ Pilot Field has not been a happy hunting ground on the Hornets’ recent visits. And, Horsham had lost their last three games, conceding 10 goals without scoring themselves, but, although Hastings were on a winning streak, keeping a clean sheet in the process, their own season had been disappointing overall. So, both sides had something to prove and the crowd were treated to a see-sawing game – ending in a draw but with the lead changing hands, two late goals put the result in doubt until the final whistle. Kenny Pogue gave Hastings the lead with an 18 minute header. Then, Liam MacDevitt’s free kick into the Hastings box came to nothing before Horsham keeper James Fernandez pulled off a good save. The score remained 1-0 at the break, with no hint of the excitement that the five-goal second half would bring. On the resumption the Hornets came close to equalising, only

to find the side netting, but Hastings scored next after slick passing on the break enabled Sam Adams to head in a cross. To their great credit, the Hornets kept pressing and were rewarded when George Landais curled a free kick round the wall and into the top corner. 20 minutes later the Hornets drew level with a Joe Shelley goal, followed by Adams heading wide for Hastings. Horsham, though, were not done – they dramatically went ahead when Shelley scored again with just 2 minutes of normal time left on the clock. A famous away win beckoned, until Rhys Whybourne cruelly ensured that the sides shared the points by scoring with the last kick of the game. On Saturday after two long away journeys the Hornets are back at Lancing to play Molesey, against whom they lost 2-1 in Surrey on the opening day of the season. Then, on Tuesday (24th) in Round 2 of the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup, they have a favourable home draw – against the Dockers – Newhaven, whom they beat 2-1 in an away pre season friendly. Newhaven are currently mid table in the Southern Combination, the league below Horsham’s.
