Man sentenced for rape of teenage girl in Horsham Arrests made as police target thefts from cars

May pearson

A Broadbridge Heath resident has received a prison sentence for the rape of a teenage girl in Horsham Reece Pettitt, 20, unemployed, of Charrington Way, Broadbridge Heath, Horsham, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years imprisonment at Lewes Crown Court on 13 October, having been convicted in August of the rape of a 17-year-old girl, in October 2015, at a hostel in Horsham where they were both living at the time. Pettitt, who will also be registered sex offender for life, was found not guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice in Crawley, in April last year, in relation to this case. Detective Constable Nicky Beard, of the West Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit, said: “The victim in this case was vulnerable and showed real courage in reporting this matter and giving evidence at court. “Pettitt, who was barely known to the victim, invited himself into into her room where he began to make unwanted sexual approaches. He ignored her repeated pleas to leave before carrying out the rape”.

members of the public for their support and assistance in providing information. “I’d also repeat our advice to motorists not to leave anything of value in their vehicles, or at least to lock it away out of sight, and to ensure doors and windows are left secure. After dark, it is also advisable to park in well-lit areas whenever possible.” If a crime is believed to be in progress or about to occur, people should immediately ring 999 and ask for police. Other information can be sent online or by phoning 101, quoting Operation Blackout.

Zoo Keepers at Drusillas Park have been noticing a growing number of strange and eerie calls echoing around whilst they carry out their evening checks. After closing time, when the night begins to creep in, a haunted howling has been making them increasingly unnerved… Feeling unsettled by the noises, a few of the newer Keepers began to voice their concerns. The Zoo Manager, Sue Woodgate, is all too familiar with these ghostly wailings and has heard them around the Park many times before. Zoo Manager, Sue Woodgate, commented: “These sounds are very unusual and they really give

you the jitters if you don’t know what they are. The calls are actually coming from Lemurland, where our popular ring-tailed lemurs reside.” The scientific name from ring-tailed lemurs is lemur catta; meaning ghost cat in Latin! The species earned this name due to their ability to move stealthily through the trees in almost deathly silence, as well as their wide staring eyes giving them a somewhat spooky demeanour. They are also cat-like in size and appearance, with white angular ears. However, lemurs are not always quiet; they have a complex and

distinct array of vocalisations, including wailing, cackling and shrieking. Their mysterious howl is audible up to half a mile away and it is this noise that has been giving the Keepers a fright at night. Head Keeper, Mark Kenward, commented: “The lemurs tend to howl at the end of the day and they seem particularly vocal at the moment; the sound can be quite menacing, especially at night when the Park is closed. The evenings are drawing in now and they have made me jump on several occasions whilst carrying out my evening checks. I think they just do it to scare me but I can definitely see why they were named ghost cats.” The lemurs creepy caterwauling is not the only spooky thing going on at the Park this week! Drusillas Shriek Week began on Saturday 21 October and runs until Sunday (29 October). Bring your little horrors on a spine-tingling adventure though the cobwebbed corridors of Haunted Heights and down into the terror-tory of sin sisters, Hocus & Pocus! Then take your chances in Eden’s Eye, but beware, there’s a Mummy on the loose and Creepy Crawly encounters to be had in the Discovery Centre throughout the week. Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open daily from 10am. For more information, please telephone 01323

Horsham District Council and West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service are set to deliver a fire prevention workshop tailored specifically for Horsham based restaurant owners from 2pm to 3.30pm on Monday 6 November at The Capitol, Horsham. Raising awareness of the workshop and distributing promotional flyers, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service were out in force in Horsham on Wednesday (25 October) encouraging local restaurants to participate. A spokesman for the organisers explained: “Horsham has had four major restaurant fires in three years. Apart from the risk to life, these fires have been extremely costly for the town, as well as each business affected, and we are keen to help businesses understand what they can be doing to help prevent a reoccurrence.”

Horsham artists put on another stunning show

News Martin Read

The exceptional creativity of the artists in our district has long been appreciated, yet this year’s Horsham Artists’ Open Studios (HAOS) Contemporary Arts Fair at the town’s WSCC Parkside (County Hall North) HQ was more stunning than ever with around 50 talented people demonstrating their colourful crafts. Those displaying included painters, jewellers, sculptors, print makers, ceramicists and enamellers, silversmiths, practitioners in textiles and glass, embroiderers - and furniture makers, too. Such was the overall quality and attraction of the items on display that it was almost invidious to single out individual exhibitors for special mention, many and varied were the eye-catching works on show.

Walking round it was particularly interesting to talk to the craftspeople. Fleur Campbell’s oil and mixed media paintings were inspired by a visit to Butrint, Albania’s little visited, but wonderful World Heritage Site with its Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian civilisation and culture. Having qualified with a BA in fine art and winning the prestigious Laing Prize, Fleur is now completing her MA at Brighton. Marrakech themes enthused Kezia Noel-Paton’s creations, as, nearby, Kevin Meeten was dispaying futuristic 3D designs incorporating tin foil and a wide range of readily available materials, while Joanna Wenczka’s paintings gave full reign to the animation techniques that she had studied at university. Angela Jenkinson was showing fused glass jewellery and glass art close to Deborah Carter, another

artistic jewellery maker – from Henfield. Ian Hadley’s striking paintings depicting scenes from Horsham and across Sussex and Carole Skinner’s captivating nature studies were especially breathtaking. Other painters included Holly Dale with her innovative textile features and Alison Ingram’s award-winning, striking paintings of birds and wildlife. Jill Mills demonstrated her craft jewellery skills, fashioning iconic items before viewers’ eyes, and Susan Tindall enthralled with her bespoke productions of ceramics and enamel. There was also excellent work on display from the Horsham Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild, who meet in the London Road Methodist Church. And, pride of place in Alex Ansell’s area was his spectacular table fashioned from a single wide section of beautifully seasoned yew. The above is but a flavour of the HAOS Contemporary Arts Fair, HAOS being an informal group of artists and crafts people, from beginners to professionals, meeting to share ideas and organise events to promote their highly original work, locally skilfully created in a wide range of mediums using specialist tools and equipment. During the weekend Fair visitors were treated to a wide variety of demonstrations and further information on what HAOS has to offer is available from www.horshamartistsopenstudios.co.uk

Sussex’s first ‘as recommended by locals’ cycles guide is launched

on the artist Keith Haring. The team were presented with a certificate and £40 worth of gardening vouchers to use for future gardening projects. Club members worked tirelessly, dedicating their own time to ensure their design was outstanding and in peak condition at time of judging. A well deserved 1st place.

Station Garage, the family run Skoda garage in Horsham, is delighted to announce that their ‘as recommended by locals’ Sussex cycle guide is now complete and ready for the county’s cycling enthusiasts to pick up or download free of charge. The guide comprises a number of cycle routes across the Sussex which are suitable for cyclists of all abilities, from beginners to professionals. The routes featured have been compiled by Sussex residents

who nominated their favourite trails last year across four different categories: coastal routes, longer rides, family rides, and mountain biking trails. All of the nominated routes were then collated by the team at Station Garage and the public voted for the top routes to make it into the final guide. James Thorpe, Dealer Principal at Station Garage in Horsham, commented: “Cycling is a significant part of ŠKODA. The concept of ‘recon-

necting’ has been at the heart of the brand this year and, indeed, the launch of the Kodiaq SUV and new ŠKODA Karoq. So we thought, what better way to reconnect – with family, with nature, with life – than to embrace cycling and explore everything that our county has to offer. “Not many people are aware but Skoda is no stranger to the two wheeled sporting trend, as the company’s co-founder, Vaclav Klement, actually started the business manufacturing bikes in 1895. Fast forward 120 years and what started out as a bike firm is now an international company selling both two and four wheeld vehicles. In fact, the brand still make bikes to this day and even sponsors various cycling events around the world, including The Tour de France, RideLondon, The Tour Series and The Tour of Britain, to name but a few. “Our new handy guide has been compiled for local cyclists, from beginner to professional level, and aims to bring people together as well as share the best routes and cycle tracks in the county. It will be available to download on our website at www. station-garages.co.uk or within our dealership located in Horsham.”

Horsham Repair Café an outstanding success

The first session of the new Horsham Repair Café on Saturday 7 October proved an outstanding success. At 10am approximately 50 people came through the doors of the Horsham Quaker Meeting House to witness the official opening by Jeremy Quin MP and Councilor Philip Circus, who spoke about the importance of this initiative for Horsham District. Carrie Cort and Jill Shuker from Sussex Green Living are both WSCC trained voluntary Waste Prevention Advisors and they have partnered with the Horsham Quakers to set up the Horsham Repair Café. Jill said: “The first Repair Café is focusing on repairing and reusing textiles. We know that West Sussex County Council spends £1.4 million every year on disposal of textiles thrown away at home in the general waste bin, so this project

will help to reduce that cost to the Council and tax payers. “The concept of a Repair means that members of the public don’t just drop their items and go off shopping, they sit with the voluntary repairer and learn how to do the repair or adaption themselves”. At this first Repair Café there were five Sussex Green Living creative sewing volunteers who repaired 15 pieces of clothing and bags, as well as inspiring people with creative textile crafts. There was a colourful display of clothes and bags which had been made out of ‘unwanted’ materials. The launch of the first Repair Café in West Sussex is thanks to some start up funding from Green People’s ‘20 Ways to Change the World’ grant, given out to mark their 20 years of creating natural plant based organic beauty products with human and environmen-

tal health in mind The founder of Green People, Charlotte Vøhtz, joined the Repair Café to see how the local community are benefiting from the £1000 grant. The organisers were delighted with the level of interest shown by the local community in the Repair Cafe and they managed to recruit three more volunteers who want to help this community driven initiative! Donations of materials, cotton thread and felt were received, with promises of extra donations next month. There was even a visitor from Transition Town Worthing who came to see the Repair Café in action, as Worthing are now considering setting up their own one. ITV Meridian filmed the launch and helped to spread the word. The next Horsham Repair Cafe is on Saturday 4 November, when the Kinder Tech team will be helping to repair and improve the performance of laptops and PCs. The session will run between 10am and 12.30pm and booking a repair slot is essential. There will also be one sewing machine and volunteers available to help with clothing repairs. Anyone interested in bringing a laptop, PC or clothing to be repaired, or sharing their practice skills in a voluntary capacity, should visit http:// www.horshamrepaircafe.org.uk/contactbooking/.

as an Explorer Scout Leader? The answer is ... quite a lot! This summer two West Sussex Explorer Units visited Kandersteg - Scouting’s own outdoor activity centre in the heart of the Swiss Alps and another Explorer Unit travelled to the Isle of Skye to experience the many outdoor adventure activities available to young people in the UK. Explorer Scouts from across Horsham District also attended WS 2017 - West Sussex Scout and Guide International camp joining up with more than 3000 Scouts and Guides from across the County and the rest of the world in a festival celebrating the global nature of Scout and Guide membership and friendship. Explorer Scouts is about finding new adventures and places to visit, both at home and abroad. For example, last year a small group of Explorers attended an International Camp in Finland and in 2019 a contingent of up to 12 Scouts will travel to the 24th World Jamboree in the United States joining up with Scouts from all around the globe. All of these events and activities are only possible through the oversight, guidance and leadership of adults who are keen to enable young people between the ages of 14 to 18 to broaden their horizons. These experiences make a significant difference to young people as they learn how to manage personal freedom and grow into responsible and useful adults in our society. To help guide them, they need adults with skills and enthusiasm to encourage and nurture these young people in to experiences that they are unlikely to gain in any other organisation.

“With the older age group you can push them a little further; they can try things a little bit more adventurous but at the same time they can take a greater part in organising their activities.“ Alan Scofield, Europa Explorer Leader. These big events are part of the ongoing work that is done with young people through Scouting, but not every adult volunteer has to be able to do everything or be skilled in every aspect of what Explorer Scouts do. As in in every walk of life, Scouting uses the skills you have in different ways. We just ask any adult volunteer to offer what they can and work as a team. This could be the most valuable lesson that is taught to our young people! We believe Scouts learn best by doing and even better when their leaders are great role models. And what are the young people looking for in a leader? “Leadership, control and trust and be mates with them sort of.” - Matt, Titan Explorer. And what can it offer you? Well, being a leader is “mostly having a good laugh…Going to adventurous places.” - Alan Scofield, Leader Europa Explorers. To “give them the experiences we had.” - Sam Tichband, Leader Europa Explorers. Explorer Scouting is in need of new leaders to join both existing teams and create new ones. We want to hear from adults who believe our young people are our future. If this ticks any of your boxes we would like to talk and tell you more about the exciting opportunities Scouting offers our young people and just as importantly .....YOU!

Test your horror movie knowledge with the emoji quiz for Halloween

A quarter (26%) of Brits chose paranormal as their favourite genre of horror. Brits vote The Shining as the best ever horror movie Test your horror movie knowledge with the ultimate Halloween emoji quiz October, the perfect month for crisp autumn walks, pumpkin lattes and snuggling up on the sofa to watch a marathon of spooky horrors. As Halloween approaches, new research reveals The Shining as the nation’s favourite horror movie. Mobile phone insurance provider, Insurance2go, carried out a study to reveal the nation’s all time favourite genre of horror

film, and were able to reveal the UK’s top ten frightening films to watch. When looking at which film genre gives Brits the heebiejeebies the most, the paranormal category jumped out first, with a quarter (26%) of Brits crowning it their favourite. Over a fifth (21%) of the nation love a psychological thriller, making The Shining’s Jack Nicholson the scariest psycho character to date (28%) for those who picked that genre of horror as their favourite. Sci-fi was revealed as a little too tame for Brits, as it didn’t make it into the top five scariest genres. However, Sigourney Weaver’s memorable perfor-

mance in the Alien Series clearly gripped the nation, with over a third (33%) of Brits voting Alien as their favourite in the Sci-fi category, putting her courageous attitude towards acidic aliens in the nation’s top ten horror movies of all time. When it comes to blood, gore and chainsaws, it was females who preferred the slasher genre. Over a quarter (27%) of women who crowned the slasher category as their favourite liked Texas Chainsaw Massacre, almost three times as more than men (10%). As for monster movies, the gremlins is a complete flop in the eyes of men (4%) compared to women who voted it their favourite monster movie (30%). Gary Beeston, Sales and Marketing Director of Insurance2go, commented on the findings: “You either love them or avoid them, but no matter how gory, we all have our favourite horror movies to watch at Halloween. It’s the time of year when we’re most likely to dig out an old classic and take inspiration for our own spooky costumes. “We may usually be reluctant to admit that classics such as The Omen are our favourites, but

that’s why research like this is great for revealing the nation’s unexpected guilty pleasures.” To see just how knowledgeable Brits are about horror movies in the run up to Halloween, Insurance2go has created a quiz spelling out the plots of some of nation’s favourite scary films using emojis. Local mortgage broking specialists win second national business award of the year

In February, AToM was awarded the national accolade of ‘best mortgage broker’ in the short term lending sector and in September, the company was given the ‘best use of technology’ title in the British National Mortgage Adviser Awards, voted for by both mortgage lenders and banks, as well as other mortgage intermediaries around the UK. Neal Jannels, AToM director with responsibility for the design and implementation of their new CRM system, accepted the award at the ceremony held at the Financial Services Expo 2017.

Neal said: “We have designed the system with all interested parties in mind, from the client through to the lender, enabling a seamless process, from initial product identification right through to mortgage offer and beyond. “Most systems operate on an individual staged basis, meaning that the client or broker has to re-input information at every separate stage of the mortgage process. We have managed to overcome this, through integration with an increasing number of mortgage lenders, allowing us to upload key details and docu-

ments directly onto their internal systems.” The AToM system can source a product based upon the applicants stated objectives, produce the required Key features information, conduct a full Decision in Principle and pre-populate the lenders application using the initial data provided. This has been shown to save up to 3 hours of the mortgage intermediaries’ time, saving both this and cost to the consumer. AToM are a mortgage broker with national distribution, serving the needs of mortgage consumers and mortgage intermediaries in addition to distributing mortgage products on behalf of mortgage lenders and banks. The business has supported the local mortgage community in Horsham for more than 26 years and have won numerous national titles in that period. The company also won the West Sussex County Times ‘Horsham Business of The Year’ in 2009. Jannels added: “this award for our technology system is exciting and we are talking to a large number of our introducing customers who want to make use of it. We are also only in phase one and we are excited at what the next instalments will bring. Watch this space! ”

What’s on your mind? Finding inspiration for your social media accounts

Michelle Betts Where do you turn to for inspiration when it comes to your social media business accounts? It’s not enough to post run of the mill sales messages or stock photos to try and capture people’s attention. Looking at what others are doing can give you inspiration and perhaps spark new ideas to capture the attention of your target audience. Big companies have social

media teams and creative agencies building their campaigns and running their accounts for them. Their images are slick and their images on brand. But the ones doing it best and really standing out are those showing a quirky side, a sense of humour and bringing a personal touch to the platforms. Take a look at Innocent Smoothies (those of you who’ve been on my social media courses know I love their Facebook account). Each Autumn they post a fabulous graphic about how to change your clocks (let’s hope they don’t let me down this weekend!). This isn’t anything to do with their drinks but their

content makes them memorable and creates plenty of engagement and love for their brand. KFC have recently been in the social media headlines for the fact their Twitter account only follows 11 other accounts. This isn’t due to the fact they’re being selective or elitist, it’s a very clever marketing ploy; go on, open up Twitter and have a look! Lots of people love stationery but how do you make it fun and interesting? Follow Staples on Instagram and you’ll find out. They pick national days and make relevant and fun images to fit with their brand combined with fun videos and puzzles to encourage interaction. All these businesses are giving their social media accounts a personality, they’re being human and engaging. Staples have taken the boring and made it entertaining whilst Innocent Smoothies are giving their users a positive and fun experience. The Natural History Museum and the Science Museum recently had a ‘tweet off’ when one Twitter user asked them who’d win in a staff battle and what they’d use from their respective museums to help them. The result was an incredibly entertaining conversation (look up #AskACurator). Have a flick through Facebook, a twirl around Twitter and an idle inside Instagram looking at what

other businesses are doing, large and small to see how they are using their accounts and what you could try with yours. If you struggle for content, consider if you could utilise ‘user generated content’ from your followers to create some of your posts. So who’s doing it well locally? HAODS Horsham have been using social media very effectively to build up the excitement for their next production, The Witches of Eastwick. With quirky photos, short videos and clever tweets they’re spreading the word and at the time of writing, had just two tickets left in the stalls for the Saturday evening! Looking at two location businesses, Horsham Ice Rink has just opened and has used a mixture of countdowns and user generated content on their Facebook, combined with answering FAQs to keep people informed. Thursday 15th

Prepare yourself for an evening of delightfully devilish entertainment as HAODS bring the magical modern musical comedy ‘The Witches of Eastwick’ to Horsham this November. Welcome to the respectable little town of Eastwick - a place run like clockwork, and where everyone knows everything about everyone! It’s a perfect place, full of perfect people... but get ready, because the biggest scandal in Eastwick history is about to hit town. The peaceful status quo is shattered by three Eastwick housewives, Alex, Jane & Sukie, who are desperate for something (or someone!) to break their boredom and spice up their dull little lives. One mystical stormy night they wish for their ideal man and get a lot more than they bargained for, when the suspiciously devil-like Darryl

Van Horne appears in town. Darryl seduces each woman in turn and unleashes in them magical powers they never knew they had. But the relationships go sour as events in Eastwick take a sinister turn and the women realise how dangerous Darryl really is. What happens next? Well hell hath no fury like three women scorned! Join HAODS for a thrilling evening of entertainment in this rollercoaster of a story. Imagine Stepford Wives, Hunger Games & Desperate Housewives all rolled into one and set to an incredible musical score with enchanting harmonies. Add in some big spellbinding dance numbers, and of course throw in a bit of real life magic, for a night to really remember. Director Stacey James said: “We are hoping Horsham is ready for something a little bit naughty.

Photios by David Veitch & Chris Dale You may remember the cult film from the 80s, which was probably fairly out there for its day. The musical is a dark comedy and this version was re-written to shock its audience. Our comical and witty portrayal features a devilish but somehow likeable rogue, saucy seductions, and three intriguing women who get pushed to their limits. We have worked incredibly hard to get this show right and do justice to the gorgeous music, and also to create the layers and depth needed within the characters to grab and entertain you. “The story features three women who we want our audience to relate and root for. The impressive acting is not the only reason why you should book a ticketwe have drilled the poor cast to bring you fabulous choreography, colourful and hilarious physicality and beautiful vocals. This show is set to get your pulse racing with sexy routines,

plot twists and turns, and some special effects thrown in for good measure. The perfect date night, girls’ night, or work night to fright and excite, timed perfectly for the Halloween season.” The Witches of Eastwick is flying into The Capitol Theatre, Horsham, from Tuesday 14 until Saturday 18 November, with performances on Tuesday to Friday evenings at 7:30pm, a Saturday matinee at 2pm and Saturday evening at 7pm. For tickets, pleas visit The Capitol box office at www.thecapitolhorsham.com or call 01403 750 220. HAODS have been entertaining the audiences of Horsham for over 60 years. Roll pioneer and touring with the likes of Eddie Cochran, Billy Fury and Gene Vincent before headlining shows with The Beatles as opening act. The heady days of Rock ‘n’ Roll will be laid bare and the evening promises to be an intimate glimpse into the hectic world of one of Britain’s most enduring and best loved performers. This show, however, will not only be stories and anecdotes, it will feature a lot of music. Aided and abetted by his old friend Henry Gross, Joe will play many a song and do what he does better than almost anyone else – entertain with a capital E. US born Henry Gross is no stranger to the stage either. A superlative guitarist, he founded the chart-topping group Sha Na Na and was the youngest musician to play Woodstock. Subsequently, he built a significant solo career and regularly performs ‘Shannon’, his self-penned No 1 worldwide hit. Joe commands a stage like no other. His musical skills are legend, his repartee renowned. Indeed, Joe Brown - up close and personal - what could be more entertaining and what could be more of a treat! William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is a blistering political thriller, as relevant today as ever. With its exploration of absolute power and creeping dictatorship, now is the perfect time to revisit this play. Pitchy Breath Theatre Company are doing just that in this fast paced, modern dress, gender blind adaptation that brings this historical play firmly up to date,

whilst still retaining the glorious language of our greatest writer, touring to venues in Sussex and Surrey this November. Pitchy Breath will transport you to an alternative world, where the Roman Empire never fell, to tell the story of the murderous conspiracy against Julia Caesar from her closest allies. A cast of actors from the local community have been rehearsing alongside

professional performers, under the direction of Gary Andrews, to bring this classic play into the 21st century. Funded and supported by Crawley Borough Council, Pitchy Breath Theatre Company was formed in 1995 and Julius Caesar will be their 51st production, their first Shakespeare play since 2011’s all-female version of The Taming of the Shrew. Bradley Barlow, Artistic Director of Pitchy Breath Theatre Company, said: “Pitchy Breath has a proud history of taking classic theatre, ripping up the rule book and turning things on their head – and this production promises to be no exception. Following a fantastic audition earlier in the year, the cast have delivered some incredible performances to produce a show that will be remembered as one of Pitchy Breath’s best.” Gary Andrews, director of Julius Caesar, said: “One of the exciting challenges of this production has been finding ways to make the setting modern without compromising Shakespeare’s language. During the rehearsal process, we have found lots of places to insert up to date references, turning servants to PAs, characters using mobiles and social media, that will resonate with today’s audience and make it easier for them to identify with the characters.” Performances: Tuesday 14 & Wednesday 15 November, 7.45pm, at The Hawth Studio. Tickets: £12 (discounts: £10), available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or by visiting: hawth.co.uk

New Village Hall starts to take shape

Construction is now underway on Thakeham’s new village hall within the landmark Abingworth Meadows development, where Chairman of the Parish Council, Alan Hunt, was invited by Oakford Homes to lay one of the first bricks. Alan is pictured here in front of

the steel frame of the village hall with Mike Lenton, project manager at Oakford Homes, and Brendon Schooling, the site manager who responsible for construction of the impressive new homes and the numerous new amenities at Abingworth Meadows. “This is unique in terms of the

A heavenly retreat in The Lily

scale of new facilities being created for the village,” said Alan Hunt. “We’re really very fortunate, the new village hall will bring a fresh vibrancy to the community, with a stage for theatre productions, a badminton court and plenty of space for activities. Thakeham’s residents will have a great facility which will be able to cater for the needs of all ages right across the community.” The hub of amenities at Abingworth Meadows is due to include a village shop, cricket pitch with pavilion, football pitches with changing rooms, pre-school and of course the new village hall. It will create a new focal point conveniently situated for Thakeham’s residents who enjoy an active lifestyle or one of the many interest groups in the local community. When Alan and his wife moved back to the UK from overseas, they soon chose to settle in Thakeham. “I just love being part of this community. There is a neighbourhood plan in place,

a vision for the future of the village and the community. We are always keen to hear from local residents who would like to be involved in the parish council activities and anyone interested to learn more is welcome to step forward.” Mike Lenton, project manager at Oakford Homes, added, “It’s always great to see a new development taking shape but Abingworth Meadows is genuinely exceptional with such a range of amenities planned. We’re very proud of the entire project which has been designed in close collaboration with Abingworth Homes, Horsham District Council and of course, Alan and his colleagues at Thakeham Parish Council.” To view the new homes at Abingworth Meadows which is just off the Storrington Road in Thakeham, call in to the sales centre and show home which is open daily between 10am and 5pm, telephone 01798 879140 or visit oakfordhomes.co.uk.

There are certainly times when most parents feel the need to escape from the hustle and bustle of family life and reclaim a sense of calm. Perfect for just that is ‘The Lily’, a beautiful five bedroom house constructed by Oakford Homes at the outstanding development of Abingworth Meadows in Thakeham. “The open plan kitchen and living room downstairs is fantastic for family life but we find it’s the top floor suite which really captures the attention of everyone who visits,” said Fred Aitkenhead, sales executive at Abingworth Meadows. “The master suite takes up the entire second floor so as well as a huge bedroom with a lovely outlook over the cricket pitch towards the countryside, you also have a bank of wardrobes and an ensuite to die for - there’s a big walk-in shower as well as a separate bath to soak away the concerns of the day.” The master bedroom itself extends to more than 22ft by 15ft and offers a delicious sense of relaxation and recuperation away from the rest of the house. On the first floor are four further bedrooms and two bathrooms, while the ground floor has an elegant living room,

separate study and a vast open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room with doors out to the garden. A utility room and double garage complete the layout of this substantial home. There are now only two of these house designs left overlooking the cricket green, priced from £875,000, one of which has just been dressed by interior designers with curtains, blinds and light fittings throughout. Both homes are available and ready for immediate occupation meaning you could spend Christmas in one of these stunning properties. “We’re very lucky here with the pretty views all around and as the new village hall and shop are also getting underway the community here is really blossoming” added Fred. The show home & marketing suite at Abingworth Meadows are open every day from 10am to 5pm where you’ll find touch screen technology has been introduced to make viewing the latest collection of homes here even easier. For more information, visit Fred and Ruth in the marketing suite just off the Storrington Road, Thakeham, contact them on 01798 879140 or visit oakfordhomes.co.uk.

Horsham overturned by powerful Charlton Park Saturday October 21 – London 2 South East Charlton Park 25 8 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Charlton Park are genuine title chasers and, in tricky gale force conditions, gave Horsham a thorough examination. Initially, Horsham kept their hosts at bay despite sustained pressure, escaping after Charlton penalties had come to nought, but the south east London side gradually asserted their authority to secure a comprehensive victory, Horsham’s second successive reverse. A Sam Baker try put Charlton in front. Horsham, though came more in to contention but failed to maximise their

opportunities, missing a penalty and being blocked at close range. Charlton, too, had chances but when they converted a penalty they led 8-0 at the break. Charlton put Horsham under the cosh again in the second half, but, although suffering injuries to both Tom Johnson and Mike Watts, the Green & Whites came close with a Johnny Ordidge foray, before they clawed back three points with a Joe Wilde penalty. However, Charlton soon restored their superiority with another try, converted to put them 15-3 to the good. And, it got worse after an aborted Jonny Whiting burst when Charlton winger Jeremy Montes crossed the line. Horsham were still creating promising situations but were thwarted by handling errors before Charlton hooker Ed

Mason added another try to give his side 25 points. Ryan Maguire did subsequently get under the posts for Horsham, but the kick went begging, Charlton Park deservedly winning 25-8. Displeased Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker’s assessment was: “A very disappointing performance with the team only showing some of its potential for the final two minutes. We lacked appetite for the fight and the lineout completely misfired, denying us possession. Charlton missed scoring chances but we also left a number out there and we look forward to a rematch at Coolhurst with the opportunity to right today’s wrongs. We need to banish this and make sure we perform better, starting with our local derby against Pulborough on Saturday.”

Boro pull off a fine home win ing round and under the posts, with the kick converted despite the pernicious crosswind. Boro responded positively with more possession, Ben Miller bursting over and Frazer Oliphant-Hope adding the extras. Then, two Boro penalties – one to the left and the other to the right – slid past the posts. But, persistent Boro pressure paid off with a converted Nick Haynes try and another, unfulfilled, by Brad Game, posting a19-7 home lead at the break. In the second half Heath had the gale at their backs and soon added their second try, but, Dan Bullock retaliated similarly to put Boro 24-12 in front, before Heath caused concern with a converted try. But, Boro defended resolutely and, after Frazer slotted home a penalty, they ran out deserved 27-19 winners. Alex Steele,

Photos by Diane Game Saturday October 21 – London 2 South East Pulborough 27 19 Haywards Heath Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Although coming into this game Haywards Heath were fifth, they only narrowly beat Dover the previous Saturday and as Pulborough have a good home record and had beaten the Kent side earlier in the season, Heath were a definite target. And, on Vice President’s lunch day in front of a large crowd in good spirits, Boro duly notched

up their second win. The game, though, set off on a reflective note when a long line of home and visiting players and officials from both matches at the club lined the pitch to commemorate the sad, recent passing of three Boro stalwarts – former Team Manager Roger Hunt, Mike Briggs and Trevor Oram. The game got under way with the windsock of the next door gliding club tearing at its post and all flights grounded. Clearly kicking was going to be difficult, but Haywards Heath started brightly, almost battering over in the opening stages and three minutes later they did score – breaking through and scamper-

Pulborough President told the District Post: “Haywards Heath are a good side, but we delivered well-worked tries for a well deserved!” Clayton Saunders, Boro Head Coach said: “That was a hard-fought, courageous win and although we made some errors, we prevented Heath from getting a bonus point. We’ve mostly played the better teams so far and we’ve got another tough game at Horsham next Saturday, but our following three fixtures might be a little easier.” Boro soon meet Haywards Heath again – away - in the Bob Rogers Cup (November 18). Meanwhile, they remain 11th, one spot behind Deal & Betteshanger because of an inferior points difference.

Horsham Rugby Club completes Phase 1 of landmark development

Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter This Saturday is a big day at Horsham Rugby Club – on and off the field. Both of the senior teams, the First XV and the Lions, started their seasons impressively, and an important new development has been completed with planning for further ground breaking up-grades reaching fruition. On Saturday the new changing room block will be formally opened, followed by a highly popular Vice Presidents’ lunch, and then the icing on the cake: a local derby with Horsham welcoming Pulborough for their first ever clash at Boro’s elevated London SE2 League level following their promotion last season. With back to back league defeats after four straight wins, Horsham are eager to return to winning ways, while Pulborough also need another win to move them up the table away from the relegation zone. Commenting on the £455,000 new dressing room arrangements, Horsham Chairman Alan Croucher said: “This marks a significant improvement in our facilities, enhancing the experience of people coming to our club and I place on record my personal thanks to the team led by Chris Wright, who have brought this four year project to a successful conclusion.”But, the new dressing rooms are just the first step in advancements that will transform the excellence of what the club already has to offer into amenities that will be the envy of clubs throughout the county and well beyond. The next major development will be the installation of the RFU’s Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) – the first in Sussex, enabling the club to host representative matches, Alan Croucher saying: “The AGP will be the maximum size available and, now that we have finalised the various environmental enquiries, the Council have confirmed that construction can proceed and this will start on

the week commencing March 19th.” The AGP will be sited on the existing 1st XV pitch and scheduling its installation for next spring enables the club to continue to have full use of the entire playing area and car park before vehicles, equipment and supplies are brought in. With phase one of HRFC’s development plan complete the club now switches attention to the 2020 vision of restructuring the clubhouse, made possible by the vacation of the former dressing room area, with the express intention of

This marks a significant improvement in our facilities, enhancing the experience... “introducing facilities that are second to none to allow Horsham to retain and develop the best young talent in the area.” Members are being urged to complete the survey on the club website and casting a vote to help shape the future of the club and to take the opportunity to express their preference for options described and illustrated on display boards at the club, Alan Croucher commenting: “Whatever option is eventually chosen, we need to raise funds and obtain grants, the costs ranging from £100,000 to £300,000, depending on what is decided upon, and the club is indebted to Alex Ross, Robert Plinston and the development team for their continuing work as they progress with delivering the agreed solution to our social space needs. Our firework night on Saturday November 4th, is our first major fund raising opportunity and we are hoping to match last year’s achievement with a profit in excess of £20,000.”

Horsham compete before being swamped in late order agony Saturday October 21 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Winchester 5 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter On early season form the two sides seemed on a par and, once again Horsham held the opposition for much of the game only to ship in goals in a quick-fire barrage to lose by a larger margin than seemed likely. Neither side had found the net by half time and the score remained level – one apiece – well into the second half after Sam Gill’s goal for Horsham. But, then loss of concentration plus Winchester enjoying the rub of the green allowed them to take the game by the scruff of the neck, banging in four goals, including two from short corners, to hustle

through to the final whistle with three welcome points in the bag. Horsham Captain, goalkeeper Andy Isaacs, told the District Post: “It would be brilliant if we could restrict our games to 50 minutes, we’d be doing OK then! Seriously, we’re a young side and have lost some experienced players and that showed a bit today when we let Winchester in after keeping them at bay for the lion’s share of the game. We started off the season very well, beating Indian Gymkhana 5-0, but its fairly early days yet, and we’re still settling in as a team. We’re back at our new Christs Hospital home on Saturday for a 12 noon start against London Wayfarers, who have won just one of their four games to date and are eighth in the table, one place above us. So that has to be a firm target for us to get ourselves back on track.”

Strong Horsham display worries Wimbledon

Saturday October 21 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Wimbledon Ladies 1 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Wimbledon 1A had won three of their four previous games, scoring 14 goals and conceding just 5 in the process (both the second best stats in the league prior to this game), but, following a points deduction for failing to nominate an umpire for the pool they are bottom and in dire need of wins. So, to come away from London SW19 with a draw was a good result for Horsham’s young team and, for a long time it seemed likely that the result would be even better. Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “We started slowly but held on to be 0-0 at half time. Our Coach, Chris Bowen, gave the girls a great team talk during the break and they took that on board and

came back out as a different side, attacking far stronger, gaining possession and turning over the ball. Suzy Clapp gave us the lead when she converted a short corner with a strong hit. Our defence was solid and the forwards put in a lot of hard work, too. Unfortunately, Wimbledon equalised just before the final whistle to snatch a draw, but it was another great performance by our emerging team – they held their own and are improving week by week. We’re building a good team for the future!” Beaten just once in five games, Horsham are now fourth in the league. They have no game on Saturday and return to action the following weekend (Saturday November 4) with a home game against Staines, who currently occupy the penultimate berth in the table. Staines lost 8-0 last week – not their heaviest defeat – and in their four games to date have conceded 29 goals without getting on the score sheet themselves.

Waspish Hornets submerge the Moles Saturday October 21 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 3 1 Molesey Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter On the opening day of the season Horsham lost 2-1 to Molesey in Surrey, so last Saturday’s revenge – a much needed win for Horsham - was sweet, moving the Hornets up to 17th in the table, four places above Molesey’s new position. In the teeth of Storm Brian the Hornets took an early lead when George Landais accepted Liam MacDevitt’s supply to score in the 8th minute. Then, Landais might have put the Hornets

further ahead, only to see his attempt safely pouched by Liam Allen in the Molesey goal. Next, the Moles frightened the Hornets when Ryan David’s close range effort was denied by Steve Metcalf clearing from the line, but Molesey did equalise in the 37th minute when Olu Akinsanya beat Horsham keeper Joe Taylor. However, Landais responded with an unstoppable blast to put Horsham 2-1 up at the break. Second half substitutions included a switch for two of the recent Hornet signings, Matt Nexval coming off in favour of Dean Bown, who promptly latched onto a long pass and made no mistake with Allen away from his goal, giving Horsham a two goal

cushion. Both sides made further changes in personnel and there were unfulfilled chances at either end, Landais foregoing a hat trick when his effort went wide. And, the Hornets might have finished with another goal when Bown passed to the onrushing MacDevitt, who struck cleanly, only for the woodwork to keep the ball out. But, this was a comprehensive victory for Horsham and pleased to be back in winning ways, the Hornets next revert to Parafix Sussex Senior Cup action, entertaining Newhaven, before a home league match against South Park and then, the following Tuesday, a Velocity Trophy Second Round fixture at Walton Casual

YMCA start well but bow out of the FA Vase

Saturday October 21 – FA Vase Round 1 Thatcham Town 2 1 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA’s visit to Waterside Park, Crookham Hill to play Thatcham Town – the Kingfishers, fourth placed in the uhlsport Hellenic League - started promisingly, but sadly finished with YM being eliminated from the FA Vase at the first round stage. In very gusty conditions ball control was not always easy, but in the 15th minute a defensive error allowed Mark Cave space to shoot from the edge of the area, beating Kingfisher goalkeeper Chris Rackley to give YM the early lead. Harry Grant subsequently hit the post, but that was the Kingfisher’s best effort in their lack lustre first half showing. YM maintained their advantage for almost an hour – until, just after the midway point of the second half, Anthony White came off the bench to draw the Kingfishers

Photos by Keith Holmes level, after another substitute, Josh Helmore had squandered a scoring opportunity by firing straight at Aaron Jeal in the YM goal. Sam Schaaf almost restored YM’s lead, only to be thwarted by Rackley. Then, with just 9 minutes of full time remaining yet another of Kingfishers’ replacements, Jemel Johnson, scored the winner. This was a close game, likely to be decided by a single

goal and YM acquitted themselves well, earning Thatcham Town’s respect and, having enjoyed their welcome, YM supporters wished the Kingfisher’s good luck in the next round before rejoining the bus for the long return journey back to Horsham. YM’s next two fixtures are league games before they revert to cup action in the RUR Charity competition and, later, in the Peter Bentley Cup.

Six-goal Hornets sting Newhaven

Photos by John Lines

Tuesday October 24 – Parafix Sussex Senior Cup 2nd Round Horsham 6 3 Newhaven Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham reprised their win against Newhaven in the same competition last season, when, away, they won 5-2. This time there were even more goals in a highly entertaining game. The Hornets were ahead at the break and even further out of sight half way through the second half, until the frantic finale rained four more goals. The game opened with Toby House and Dean Bown thrusting without success, then a Newhaven header hit the post and

a rebound was cleared, but mid way through the half, a defensive lapse enabled Darren Boswell to crash the ball past Jake Buss in the Newhaven goal. Another Hornets goal almost followed before an unfulfilled corner, but Newhaven the Dockers - equalised when the Robinson brothers, Lee and Ian, cut through, Ian beating Horsham keeper Joe Taylor. With the game still up for grabs, Newhaven might have gone in front, but Horsham negated a peppering, before retaking the lead when Boswell fired home after a free kick. At half time Horsham led 2-1. And, the Hornets went one better on the restart when Jack Hartley speeded in and shot into the bottom corner of the net. The Dockers responded by

hitting the post, but Horsham went 4-1 up when Toby House finalised impressively. It was then for Horsham to close the game down to run out comfortable winners, but a barrage of attacks at either end saw defences in disarray. Newhaven came close to scoring, until with just eight minutes of full time left they did claw one back when Lee Robinson bested Taylor in a one to one contest. Horsham, though, immediately reinstated their three goal lead when Michael Waller got onto the score sheet and the same player soon added another to put Horsham 6-2 ahead right on 90 minutes. Yet, there was still time for Newhaven to add a consolation goal from a last ditch corner in the ensuing rampage. The Hornets last won the Sussex Senior Cup 41 years ago and now await news of their opponents in the next round. This Saturday Horsham welcome mid table South Park to Lancing. Then on Tuesday (31st) they travel to Walton Casuals - the Stags - in Round 2 of the Velocity Trophy, the League Cup. In the first ever match at the Stags’ iconic new Waterside Drive stadium, on September 9, the teams drew 1-1.

YMCA subdue high-flying Eastbourne Tuesday October 24 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 1 0 Eastbourne Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA Manager Peter Buckland expressed his pride in the team for their performance against Thatcham Town in the FA Vase and he will be equally proud of them for overturning Eastbourne Town, seven places above them in the table. Having recently beaten title chasing Saltdean, YM continue to mystify when they struggle against lower rated sides. The Eastbourne game was a noisy, hard fought affair with YM going ahead in the frantic opening exchanges when, after the ball rebounded from the crossbar, Guy Harding headed home with the visitors’ keeper well

out of position. Eastbourne’s Bright Temba then broke away down the right and the ball was kicked off for a corner, and when another set piece followed Aaron Jeal caught and cleared the cross. A YM free kick relieved the pressure, but Eastbourne attacked again, their half-hearted effort being immediately followed by a long range piledriver skimming the bar. The seasiders – the oldest senior football club in Sussex – were looking menacing, yet were thwarted when a headed goal was disallowed after the referee had blown for offside. With the game becoming excitable and players getting away with GBH if not murder, Phil Johnson scythed through only to be floored without sanction. Repeated Eastbourne incursions were kept at bay and then a YM strike was punched away for a corner, from which Player of the Week Mark Cave ballooned over. At the end of the very long first half Eastbourne’s Jack Tucker fired wide

ahead of a Jeal save, YM retaining their 1-0 advantage at the break. YM had opportunities early in the second half and a subsequent hectic pinball attack before their free kick was safely gathered after a header to the far post. Amid chances at either end, Eastbourne had another corner and then shot wide before sub Callum Jeal was sent off after an angry exchange, his brother Aaron keeping the visitors out with a high catch at the death, an impressive YM defensive display enabling them to bag all three points against a good side. On Saturday YM welcome Haywards Heath Town. Following their controversial relegation last season, Heath top the SCFL Premier Division table. Then, on Tuesday (31st) YM are at Gorings Mead again, against Wick in Round 3 of the Royal Ulster Rifles Cup. Wick are currently second in SCFL Division 1.

Greenway & St Robert Southwell Champions Football – Horsham District Primary School 3+4 League Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Park was the venue for the completion of this season’s primary football league competition for years 3+4, with Greenway A and St Robert Southwell emerging as large and small school champions. In the large school category, having won all of their games in the first phase, Greenway beat Leechpool A in the semi final and Southwater A (3-0) in the final. The small schools’ section was equally intense with Plaistow and Kirdford (P&K) beginning the day in pole position, only to be ousted by St Robert Southwell, who went on to beat St Mary’s Horsham in the semi final before overcoming P&K in the final.

The other competing schools included teams from Heron Way, Kingslea, Leechpool and Billingshurst, event organiser Ian Ford, Horsham District Council Sports Development Officer saying: “Throughout the competition 42 primary schools with some 400 players have done themselves, their parents and their schools proud with high commitment, great skill and fantastic spirit. Next up will be the year 5+6 girls’ football league and then, after February half term, the boys and girls will be back at Horsham Park contesting the single year group competitions.” Meanwhile, full result details and league tables from the 3+4 year finals day at Horsham Park are available from Ian - Ian. Sussex cricket league major re-structuring agreed Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Following a major consultation process, including a road show going round the county to present restructuring options, Sussex cricket clubs have voted overwhelmingly to introduce the new format next season – a year earlier than originally anticipated. There will in future just be one league – the Sussex Cricket League - replacing the Premier, the West Sussex Invitation, the Mid Sussex and the East Sussex leagues. Gary Stanley, Chair of the Adults’ League Group (ALG) commented: “The voting process involved every league cricket club in Sussex and we received clear instructions on the preferred direction. 102 clubs voted to begin the new playing structure in 2018 against only 12 wishing to wait until 2019, with 25 clubs declining to vote. So, we will get on with the job of putting the new playing structure in place for next season, managed by the existing leagues until the new Sussex League takes over the administration in 2019. By the dates of the existing leagues’ AGMs next month the ALG will

have finalised the placement of teams and will provide the clubs with all of the information that they need for 2018.” At the roadshow at Horsham Cricket Club, Sussex CEO Rob Andrew had said: “Doing nothing is not an option, all sports – not just cricket – are having to get to grips with lifestyle issues affecting player availability. We need to be proactive to manage the pace of change. There is a team sport problem with players dropping out at 16 and cricket is a less sociable game now, with players keen to get away earlier.” Gary Stanley added: “We want to introduce a free flowing approach, with, apart from the Premier League, a format based on the geographical location of clubs. Every county is starting work on this basis and one or two have done something similar already, with customary promotion and relegation in accordance with results achieved. The new set up will be a flexible format reflecting the appropriate level of each team and it is probable that it will take a season or two to develop the new structure in the light of how it beds down.”

Sussex members devastated by Chris Nash’s departure Chris Nash

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sussex cricket supporters are deeply saddened by the sudden departure of Horsham’s Chris Nash, the county having released Chris from the final year of his existing contract. The announcement was greeted

with anger by Sussex members: “absolutely devastated”, “astounded”, and “not surprised because of the discontent at the club” were typical reactions . All, though, agree that it is very disappointing that the popular and dependable right hander, who is still completing his testimonial celebrations, is moving on from the

club he first represented at the age of eight. Chris played 454 games for the first team in all formats, scoring over 18,000 runs and taking 167 wickets with his off breaks. The 34 year old was in the Sussex team that won Championship in 2006 and 2007, one day silverware in 2006, 2008 and 2009 and the T20 Cup in 2009. But, since those glory years Sussex have struggled to reassert themselves and there has been a heavy reliance on imported signings, with moderate achievements, while the county has failed to hang on to several impressive emerging players. Despite a lack of success, at the end of the 2016 season several members of the coaching team were promoted, but now, amid talk of unrest, it is predicted that there will be at least one departure from that set up, in whom senior players are said to have lost confidence. Sussex CEO Rob Andrew is known to have set high expectations, but the departure of such a loyal and committed player, Sussex through and through, signals that relationships at the club are at very low ebb. Many members feel that an experienced outsider should be appointed into a senior

coaching position. And, when Luke Wright stood down from the captaincy the majority thought that Chris Nash was the obvious choice to take over, it not being clear why the former Vice Captain hadn’t been given the job in the first place because his track record as stand in skipper had been good, this year and previously. Also, Chris was known to be both an enthusiastic encourager of young talent and a great ambassador for Sussex. During his education at Heron Way School and Tanbridge Chris came up through the colts at Horsham, going on to be first team captain before earning a contract with Sussex. At Horsham Chris played with his brother Mark and they were both in the side when the club won the Cockspur National Cup at Lord’s. The two brothers – whose father Nick was formerly Squash Coach at Cricketfield Road - have now joined forces to run the Pure Cricket Academy coaching camps. Sussex’s announcement of Chris’s departure was brief, almost to the point of terseness, quoting Chris as saying that he wishes to “take his career in another

direction.” Having played in New Zealand and elsewhere abroad, and with good seasons still ahead of him, his experience would be a godsend in an extended role with another county, especially one eager to rebuild. There has been mention of West Country interest but Chris has connections in the Midlands – he is known to have had a good relationship with Peter Moores when the former Sussex keeper became coach. Moores is now fulfilling a similar role at Nottinghamshire. And, Chris attended Leicestershire’s Loughborough University, for whom he played in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Like Sussex, Leicestershire have enjoyed success, but, latterly performances have been disappointing and they have brought in their former wicket keeper Paul Nixon as Head Coach, following the appointment of former Sussex player Wasim Khan as CEO. Commentating on Chris Nash’s departure from Sussex, county colleague Luke Wright tweeted: “My best mate and opening partner for so long. Good luck in the next chapter. Will miss you.”
