Anybody who has lived in Horsham for a few years will have witnessed the exponential growth in the town. Long gone are the days when Horsham was a sleepy market town and the geographical location not far from the coast, within easy commuting distance from London and with a major international airport on the doorstep make it a convenient location. And, the absence of major industry, low crime rate and the pleasant surroundings to the town make Horsham a favoured place to live with the south east already under considerable pressure to provide many new homes, a target of 800 new houses a year in the district between 2011 and 2031 would mean an additional 16,000 homes with the consequent need for supporting infrastructure. Major schemes are already being constructed in Southwater, Broadbridge Heath and Kilnwood Vale with even bigger developments to come. It is therefore, many consider, all

the more necessary to preserve the much valued oases, especially those in urban environments. One such gem under threat is the New Street Garden, described by the Friends as “a pleasant community garden for use by the residents of (built up) surrounding streets. A place to sit for a quiet read where youngsters can play football and have a good run around in safety or where local families can hold children’s birthday parties.” The Friends are committed to maintain and enhance the gardens and to encourage its use as a community open space. And, when the ‘pocket park’ was opened not too long ago, the transformation of the area from its previously somewhat run down state was celebrated – a triumph of collaboration between local residents, Horsham in Bloom, HDC and Forest Neighbourhood Council. At that time Project Chairman Councillor David Skipp said that the 18 month scheme had created ‘a safe green space where all could come and relax, play with their children or just sit and enjoy the flowers.’ There is a grassy area with seating, flowers and fruit trees, Dr Skipp stating that: “The importance of preserving green spaces for community use in an urban setting cannot be over-

Residents of New Street emphasised. And hopefully New Street Green will be one of many such schemes in the district.” The project was funded by Horsham in Bloom from the government’s Department of Community, which

assisted with payment for levelling and tree and other works. New fencing was installed and there were donations from both the Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ scheme and Tanbridge House School with

Billingshurst Wine Circle celebrates its 40th year The AGM last Friday of the Billingshurst & District Wine & Beer Circle marked the start of their 40th anniversary celebrations. The outgoing Chairman, Julie Gumbrell, reported on the past year’s events- a mix of talks, quizzes and events, all accompanied by wine tastings (and one beer evening). But despite a very successful year, it was stressed that unless someone volunteers to be ViceChairman, the club will not be able to continue after 2019. Gifts were presented to Monica Entiknap and Hilary Nulty who kindly provide refreshments for every meeting. The incoming Chairman, Eddie Stevenson, re-emphasised the need for a Vice-Chairman, but meanwhile was hoping for a great celebratory year, kicking off with the annual Christmas dinner. This year, the Scout Active Support Unit is not only serving the dinner, but is also cooking it, and to make the Ruby anniversary dinner a bit more special, the dinner will consist of three courses, with tastings of two wines per course. The Committee is always particularly grateful to SASU for providing such an excellent service, as it means they get to enjoy the meal as much as the members. Once the business part of the meeting was concluded, five members led a tasting of their favourite wines – a Vouvray, Pinot Gris, Picpoul de Pinet, Cotes du Rhone and an Argentinean Malbec, the last being voted the clear favourite. Tony Bishop, a founder member of the club in 1977, gave an amusing talk on how the Circle was formed. Ian Catlin moved from Horsham to Billingshurst in the

1970’s and ran an evening class at the Weald School on his favourite subject, home wine making. The class wished to continue their ‘studies’ and by the time the group grew to 24 members, they could no longer meet at members’ house, so they used the Women’s Hall in Billingshurst for their meetings. In 1985, it was agreed to move to St Gabriel’s Hall where the circle still meets. The steepness of the path to the Women’s Hall was cited as one of the reasons for this decision- apparently this was not so much of a problem at the beginning of meetings, but it was when members went home! During the ‘80s an upsurge in wine production saw various wine producing nations’ embassies happy to come out and give talks promoting their country’s product – South Africa, Bulgaria, Germany and Italy were named as examples. Sainsbury’s and Tesco were also happy in those days to similarly promote their wine sales. Gradually, however, commercial wine production/ drinking overtook the home made brews. There are now only two members (out of the current membership of 55) who are still home wine makers. But the circle continues to thrive and one of its assets is the number of knowledgeable in-house speakers it has, which keep meeting costs down. If you are interested in joining the Circle, which is always looking to welcome new members, please contact the secretary, Marilyn Ambrose, on 01403 786284. ‘there are no plans to remove New Street Gardens.’Say Horsham District Council

“The creation of this delightful community garden, providing an oasis of calm and beauty for local people to enjoy. New Street Green is a result of Horsham in Bloom volunteers working with HDC and others to find sponsorship and action to transform a neglected space into something worthwhile. Thanks to all participants.” Surely few would argue with such sentiments? Yet, so soon after creation of the New Street Garden it has been proposed to convert it into an access road to a suggested housing development on the RSA car park as part of HDC’s Horsham Town Centre Vision. The Save New Street Gardens petitions page says: “Not only would (the proposal) remove

a much-used and valued community garden, it goes against the Council’s own planning policy ‘to retain, enlarge or enhance the existing formal and informal green spaces within the town’ and it would also significantly increase the amount of traffic on an already over-congested and narrow street. Entries on the Facebook page include: “Fabulous space – a big part of life in our little community,” “Great little park,” “Love this garden – have had many happy times with friends and family here,” and “Love this space – a safe place for picnics and outdoor area – we use it regularly.” When the new houses were constructed at the top of New

Street the green with its seating – and where local children had planted bulbs - outside the former Bryce Lodge Centre, was built over. The plans for the proposed road through the New Street Garden will be put forward for endorsement at a Council meeting on November 23. Meanwhile, HDC have just issued a statement saying: “Horsham District Council reassures residents that there are no plans to remove New Street Gardens. The council’s Town Centre Vision statement for the future of Horsham sets out some options and ideas about how the Royal Sun Alliance (RSA) and BR Station car park sites could be developed, but no plans have been approved to remove New Street Gardens and the concerns of local residents are understood.” The statement goes on to say one proposal would require the provision of additional access via the New Street Gardens but another option explores increasing car parking alone with no impact on New Street Gardens. The statement ends by saying: “The public would be fully consulted on proposals, should they come forward … any proposed development will need to be carefully assessed in relation to any impacts on neighbouring properties, open space and the local road network.”

Local Young Entrepreneur to showcase sleep solution

Every Richard Branson, Alan Sugar or James Dyson experiences a moment of inspiration that is the seed which creates something great. Something that not only could help improve the lives of others, but that could also be the start of a successful business venture. This is exactly what happened one day for 13 year old Horsham lad and Tanbridge student, Tom Ralph,

and his father on a routine car journey coming home from a Saturday morning sports club. Just a simple conversation with his father as they drove along has developed into what is now a product ready for the public. Tom, with the support and guidance of his family and the feedback from market research, has created and perfected a natural blend of oils to help relaxation and ultimately a peaceful sleep: something that we all need and is a vital part of, but often overlooked, our wellbeing. On Saturday (18 November) Tom will be making his unique sleeping solution available to the public, for the first time, at the ‘Winter Fayre’, which is being held at the United Reform Church (URC) at Springfield Road, Horsham, between 1 and 4 pm. His ‘Sleep Better Pillow Mist’ also makes an ideal gift for Christmas and so to be one of the first people in the country to benefit from getting a better night sleep, why not support Horsham’s future ‘Apprentice’ and visit him on his stall this Saturday. Good luck Tom.

Objectors delight as plans to ‘rip up’ pavements are scrapped West Sussex County Council has decided not to go ahead with plans to re-surface pavements in a Horsham conservation area. A plan announced to ‘rip up’ pavements in Richmond Road and Gordon Road, Horsham, was met with furious objection earlier this month. Residents knew nothing about the plan until letters were pushed through their letter boxes, giving them just two working days to try to halt it. As heavy resurfacing machinery trundled into position, on the night of November 3, for the work to begin at 7 a.m. on Monday (November 6), concerned householders learned the controversial decision was made back in December, yet neither their district nor county councillors were told about it. In a startling twist, Horsham District Council’s principal planning officer, Mark McLaughlin, admitted he didn’t know it was happening either and said the first he’d heard about the resurfacing work was when a resident called his office to complain. Mr McLaughlin, who didn’t start his job until January - after the decision was made - promised to investigate. Horsham MP Jeremy Quin wrote to Tom Crowley, Chief Executive of Horsham District Council, about the lack of consultation. “As I am sure you will appreciate this is a matter for HDC and the County Council but I completely understand your concern and this afternoon emailed the Chief Exec of HDC to draw it personally to his attention,” said Mr Quin in an email to residents.

Local resident, Eve Richings, who was eager to stop the plan from going ahead, contacted The District Post on 8 November to issue the following statement: I am delighted to tell you that the campaign to stop the pavements in the conservation area of Richmond Road and Gordon

Road, Horsham, being ripped up and replaced with tarmac has been successful. West Sussex County Council called me this morning to tell me they had listened to residents’ concerns and had decided ‘not to do the work for now.’ They also promised, should they decide to resurface the walkways in the future, there will be full consultation and that ‘all options’ would be looked at. The highways team explained that cost was also a factor in pulling the work from their schedule, saying their budget for this year’s rolling pavement replacement

programme was ‘slightly over’ and having consulted with the contractor doing the work, the cost of resurfacing Richmond and Gordon Roads was going to cost more than expected. ‘We can spend the money elsewhere, where there’s less objection to the work,’ said Paula Buckland, of the county council’s highways department. ‘We are not going to do the work for now. Maybe in the future we’ll consider it, perhaps with a bit more consultation. In the meantime, we will just inspect (the pavements) as part of our inspection regime and any defects can be repaired. ‘We’ll certainly look at what’s happened here and learn from it.’ Horsham District Council’s principal planning officer, Mark McLaughlin telephoned me shortly after he’d been given the news by the county council’s structural engineer, Chris Whiting. ‘I’ve just had an email and it looks like your road has been taken out of the scheme,’ said Mr McLaughlin. ‘There’s been a slight overspend on the footway budget this year. They were looking to remove some schemes from the end of schedule but due to the response from Richmond Road, it seems reasonable to take Richmond and Gordon Roads out of the scheme instead.’

Ms Carter, 82, who was brought up in Horsham said: “There is always something to do here, whether it is sewing, knitting and embroidery, or watching old classic films and reading. I also look forward to my eggy bread on Sunday morning.” Deputy home manager, Doreen Holmes, said: “It was a lovely way to mark the occasion. I have a great team here who work so hard to provide the high standard of care we deliver, and I couldn’t be prouder. We’re looking forward to continuing to provide excellent care for our residents – here’s to the next 10 years.”

News Eve Delves - Horsham in Bloom As the long nights draw in and winter is officially on the way, let’s not forget summertime just

yet! April saw the launch of Horsham in Bloom’s annual summer competitions season aimed at motivating keen local gardeners and rewarding their superb ef-

forts. As well as the familiar categories for Best Allotment, Public House in Bloom, Best Front Garden and Best Community Garden, there was a new category this year, Growing Without Gar-

dens, catering for those without what is considered a traditional gardening space. There were many spectacular entries and all the winners were invited to afternoon tea at The Holbrook Club on Thursday 5th October. Sue Brundish of Horsham in Bloom made the introductions and then handed over to a very special Awards Host, Jean Griffin, President of Kew Guild and Presenter for BBC Radio Kent, Radio Surrey and Sussex. Among the highlights of the afternoon was an impromptu ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ led by Jean during a short lull in proceedings while everyone waited for more tea. The big winners of the day were Dave and Sue Harry for their Allotment at Chesworth; the residents of Clarence Court who won top prize for their glorious gardens in the Community Services category; The Black Jug for Public House in Bloom, Debbie Richmond took first prize for her front garden while Nathan Stone was awarded Gold in the Growing Without Gardens Category. Each year, the Neighbourhood/ Parish Councils recognise local residents for outstanding efforts or contributions to their community, it could be for a well-tended area of land, or for such community-focussed activities as litter picking. The recipients of this

year’s trophies were Mrs. Boylett from Denne, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver from Trafalgar, Helen Cox of Forest and Janice Clark from North Horsham. Another special award, the recipient of which is chosen by Horsham in Bloom, aims to recognise a particular volunteer who has gone above and beyond; and this year’s Volunteer of the Year Award was given to Janet Fraser of Hills Farm Conservation Group. Lastly, the 2017 Chairman’s Award went to PDT Solicitors, whose colourful and inventive displays outside their office are a delight to passing pedestrians and also prevent illegal off-road parking, having a hugely beneficial effect on the health and the safety of everyone who uses the pavement. Horsham in Bloom is extremely grateful to its sponsors, without whom the Summer Competitions would not be possible and we would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to Hillier Garden Centres, North Horsham Parish Council, Knight Frank. Some private donations were also made, further enabling us to continue our work. For details of all this year’s winners and runners-up, please visit our website: www.horshaminbloom.org.uk or Facebook page www.facebook.com/Horsham.in.Bloom

Pointing the way in Billingshurst

Headteachers gather for Downing Street visit

of this project, which has been supported by the Chamber of Commerce. Phase 2 will be a new visitor map and brochure in 2018, and Phase 3 consists of a new visitor and tourism website. The new posts, which are dark blue to match existing street furniture, indicate all key public buildings and formally identify the library as the Visitor Information Centre for Billingshurst. The walking times have been added to give more detailed help to those who are new to the area.

Headteachers from West Sussex gathered on Tuesday morning at Tanbridge House School, Horsham, to make their way to Downing Street where they met with 70 other headteachers representing schools from over 25 counties, to deliver a letter to the Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP asking for fairer funding for all schools. Jules White, Head of Tanbridge House School, began the WorthLess? campaign to rally support for a fairer school funding system. The current system leaves schools

in certain areas unable to effectively educate their students, while schools in other areas operate with full resources thanks to better funding. WorthLess? was quick to catch the attention of national media and, over the past 2 years, support for the campaign has continued to grow. In an interview for BBC South Today from 3 October 2017, Mr White explained: “Our schools have been struggling for a long time. We’ve been having to make cuts in terms of teaching staff,

support staff - even the basics, books, equipment, cleaning. We’re really, really struggling. And I think that the fact you’ve got 4,000 schools all saying the same thing, shows just how important this issue is. “The differences between schools, perhaps in parts of the South here, when compared to areas of London, are absolutely astronomical. A school my size might be funded 3-4 million Pounds less than one in London.”

New Year, New Job? Act Now! MARK LUXFORD

Career Coach

It’s been a long tough year at work and the finish line is now in sight... right? For the privileged few, you may have an end of year bonus to look forward to or perhaps the thought of “that Christmas Party” is enough of a bonus to keep you there until the New Year! If the thought of continuing in your existing role next year keeps you awake at night, because of the lack of opportunities to progress or a boss that simply doesn’t recognise the hard work you do (amongst a variety of possible other reasons), then no doubt you are already contemplating a move. The majority of people who feel like this will undoubtedly wait until the New Year to start their job search, which is simply why you need to act now in order to beat the rush. Searching for the “right” role can be challenging and slow, so you need to invest the appropriate amount of time now in order to effectively prepare your job search. How is your CV looking? Where are you going to search? Which agencies are you going to engage with? How are you going to engage with them? Are there any compa-

nies you are wishing to specifically target? In what way are you going to approach them? When was your last interview? Do you know how to handle those tricky interview questions? How do you look like on social media? (trust me, employers will look!) What time have you set aside for attending interviews? Do you have the ability to negotiate the right offer? The list goes on. Even if the competition has thought about all or some of the above, by the time they have done the prep work and the interview processes (yes processes – always good to have a variety of options on the go at any one time as drop-out rate is quite high) are underway, realistically, you will not be starting your next position until quarter 2 next year anyway (factoring in your

notice period also). So my advice is to start planning now, giving you that all important competitive advantage you will need to succeed in a traditionally busy time of year. Should you need support getting yourself in a position of strength by having a CV that lifts you from the crowd or with any other aspect related to your job search, then I would be delighted to help. I offer a comprehensive and personalised service which is completely tailored to suit you and your budget – working to a “pay as you feel” approach. Interested to know more? Care home staff tackle obstacle course in fundraiser for residents Staff at a West Sussex care home have taken part in one of the country’s toughest ‘mud runs’ in a fundraiser for residents. Charlotte Brooking, Kayleigh Stace and Sharon Walker, who work at the Shaw healthcarerun Mill River Lodge care home, in Horsham, raised over £600 when they completed the ‘Nuts Challenge’, which saw 2,000 fun-seeking competitors drenched in dirt, racing through a mud bath assaultcourse, packed with scramble nets, bunkers and climbing walls. Nadine Kearney, home manager at Mill River Lodge, said:

“I’m so proud of them all for even attempting the challenge, let alone completing the course and raising so much money for our residents The money raised will be used for extra activities for the residents, as well as giving our Christmas celebrations an extra boost, which they will be really pleased with”. Despite being battered and bruised by the end of it, the staff members agreed that it was worth it and commented that they were looking forward to going back to Mill River Lodge to tell the residents all about it.

The Russian State Ballet and Opera House Presents Swan Lake – a tragic and dramatic romance with exquisite dancing, featuring a live Orchestra with over 30 musicians! One hundred and thirty-five years ago, audiences heard the Swan Lake music by the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for the very first time. From this moment on, the world of ballet would never be the same again. Swan Lake is a tale of two young women, Odette and Odile, who resemble each other so closely one can easily be mistaken for the other. It is the compelling legend of a tragic romance in which a princess, Odette, is turned into a swan by an evil curse. Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans

while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful young woman he is instantly captivated, but will his love prove strong enough to break the evil spell that she is under? From the impressive splendour of the palace ballroom to the moonlit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all. Swan Lake captures, like no other, the full range of human emotions – from hope to despair, from terror to tenderness, from melancholy to ecstasy. Performance: Thursday 30 November 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £34.50 (discounts: £32.50) Group 10 or more £29.50, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or by visiting: hawth.co.uk

West Sussex Philharmonic Choir’s Festive Concert

WEST SUSSEX PHILHARMONIC CHOIR (HORSHAM)

40th Anniversary Season

Vivaldi

– Gloria

Saint-Saens – Christmas Oratorio Mozart – Ave Verum Corpus

West Sussex Philharmonic Choir invites you to an evening of glorious music in the beautiful setting of St. Mary’s Church in Horsham this coming weekend. Vivaldi’s Gloria, one of sacred music’s most joyful and uplifting works, forms the centrepiece of our festive concert. Originally written in 1715 for the choir of the famous girls’ orphanage in Venice where the composer worked, nowadays it is mainly performed by mixed choirs, and is a firm favourite among concert-goers and singers alike. The other main choral item on our programme is Saint-Saëns’

Oratorio de Noël, which was first performed in Paris on Christmas Day in 1858. Though less well known and less widely performed, it is a beautiful piece of music with simple, haunting melodies and a moving organ accompaniment. Sandwiched in time, as it were, between these two works, is Mozart’s brief masterpiece, Ave verum corpus, doubtless one of his best-loved choral pieces. We also have a musical interlude featuring Debussy’s Danse sacrée et profane for harp and small orchestra, led by the choir’s Music Director, Stephen Hope.

We hope you will come along and enjoy this programme of joyous music with us! WSPC is now in its 40th anniversary season. The choir currently has about 75 members, and regularly hosts ‘Come and Sing’ workshops. New voices are always welcome. For more about the choir and our forthcoming concerts, please visit: http://www. westsussexphilharmonicchoir. org.uk Performance: Sat.18 November, 7pm at St. Mary’s Church, the Causeway, Horsham. Tickets: £14 (students £7) available on the door.

There will also be an extended market in the Carfax until 7pm and some wonderful music and entertainment for all the family throughout the afternoon. At 4pm, Uke’s Away, a Ukulele Orchestra playing quirky covers will take to the stage, followed at 5pm by the Singergy Gospel Choir. Closing the bill at just after 6pm are the sensational Dead 70’s, playing a range of Glam Rock numbers, including Christmas classics from the likes of Slade, Mud and The Sweet. horse box by the amphitheatre from 3pm until 7pm – a spectacular, interactive piece of street theatre that may make all your Christmas dreams come true! Spirit FM will be on the scene to help move the festivities along. Their very own Ian Crouch will be announcing the afternoon’s acts. Spirit FM has been broadcasting across West Sussex for nearly 22 years, and they’ve recently launched a second online station, Spirit 70’s – the home of 70’s music. So swing by and say hello. They’ll be happy to hand out their flags and talk about what Horsham means to them. There’ll be the usual fantastic mix of artisan local produce and crafts, plus Christmas gifts and decorations, as well as Horsham Market’s famous selection of street food and pop up bars serving mulled wine and cider, gin and ales. And best of all, all this entertainment is free!

Entertainment Reflecting and remembering

Entertainment Phil Dennett The mood was often one of hushed reflection at the excellent Brighton Philharmonic Remembrance Concert on Sunday at the Dome. But both the orchestra and solo violinist Matthew Trusler at times captured the drama and dislocation of the slaughter and bravery. Trusler distilled every mood of the Britten Violin Concerto in D Minor with great distinction. The piece allows the soloist plenty of elbow room for virtuosity and Trusler moved smoothly from soaring moments of peace to the jagged desperation of Britten’s tone. There seemed to be fire in Trusler’s fingertips in the faster passages, but he also showed both accuracy and tenderness, helped by a fine contribution by horns and woodwind. Growling basses and cellos and nimble violins ensured the Stokowski arrangement of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D

Minor lacked nothing in richness as the orchestra breathed new life into the score, originally famous for being an organ piece. Doom-leaden brass, urgent calls from strings, and delicate woodwind were all blended well by conductor Barry Wordsworth. The suggestion of onslaught came early in the Vaughan Williams Symphony Number 4, the fear of the opening bars ringing clearly, while the strings soon gave a hint of its pensive melodic current. A Shropshire Lad Rhapsody, with its strings full of longing and regret, was a suitably reflective piece, sensitively and thoughtfully played and a fine tribute to composer George Butterworth, who died fighting in the First World War.The underlying mood of melancholy was well captured and the sense of lost potential summed up the theme of a concert that, despite its theme, was uplifting in its dignity and quality. The next concert will be on December 3, with pieces by Elgar, Ravel and Rachmaninov.

Omid Djalili: Schmuck for a Night

Following a massive 110 date tour of his show Schmuck for a Night earlier in the year, award winning comedian and actor

Omid Djalili has just announced a brand-new batch of dates for winter 2017/18 and will be coming to The Hawth next month. Intelligent, sometimes provocative and always entertaining, his stand-up is a hugely energetic and captivating comedy masterclass. Of trying to make sense of the world around him in Schmuck For A Night, Omid said: “It’ll be so current sometimes audiences won’t laugh until they get home and turn on the TV.” As a stand-up and acclaimed actor, Omid’s credits range from Hollywood movies and television to live productions on the West End stage. He has appeared on UK and US TV, and starred in films such as the Golden Globe and Oscar nominated Shaun the Sheep Movie, Mr Nice, Gladiator, Sex And The City 2, The Mummy and The Infidel. In 2016, Omid was filming for Disney’s new liveaction production of The Nutcracker, in his role Cavalier, this is set for release in 2018. Immediately after finishing the first leg of Schmuck for a Night in May, Omid launched straight into preparation for the lead role of Tevye in Chichester Theatre

Festival’s Fiddler on the Roof, which had its run extended due to popular demand. On TV, Omid has been most recently seen in the BBC Four series Going Forward with Jo Brand, as well as making appearances in Dickensian for BBC1 and Stan Lee’s Lucky Man for SKY1. Omid also executively produced the acclaimed documentary We Are Many, about the global antiwar demonstrations that took place in 800 cities on February 15 2003 - to date, the largest mobilisation of human beings in the history of the earth. In August 2016, Omid produced an Edinburgh Fringe show called Iraq Out & Loud, which saw almost 1500 comedians and members of the public read the entirety of the Chilcot Report for 24 hours a day, over 12 days. This memorable production was awarded the prestigious Panel Prize at Edinburgh Comedy Awards, and later TV Bomb’s Zeitgeist Award. Performance: (Suitable for 16+) Monday 11 December 8pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £26, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth.co.uk.

Christ’s Hospital Choral Society – Petite Messe Solennelle – Rossini

Saturday 4 November 2017 - St Mary’s Church, Horsham For his first concert with Christ’s Hospital Choral Society – which rehearses at Christ’s Hospital, but draws its singers from Horsham and the local area – the school’s new Director of Music, Alex Hodgkinson, chose a work which the choir had never tackled before, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle. A packed St Mary’s Church was the perfect venue for the piece, which Rossini wrote in old age, 34 years after his last opera, with sincere religious conviction, although the Pope apparently refused to sanction performance in church in composer’s lifetime. The 1860s were times when female soprano and contralto solo parts, and Rossini’s dislike of boy trebles in a chorus, made a hearing in church impossible. Alex Hodgkinson drew a fine performance from his team of soloists, the chorus, and the piano and organ accompanists. From the opening Kyrie, it was clear

that the choir were singing with a fine sense of phrasing, and responding sensitively to Rossini’s dynamic markings. The big choral fugues at the close of the Gloria and Credo held no terrors for them, and in their unaccompanied entry in the final Agnus Dei they recaptured the rapt atmosphere of the opening, with some genuinely beautiful sustained singing, before ending the work in a triumphant blaze. There is nothing Petite about the demands Rossini makes of his soloists, and the strong team of soprano Augusta Herbert, alto Martha McLorinan, tenor Benjamin Vonberg-Clark and bass Edward Jones all made the most of their moments in the limelight, to the clear delight of the audience. But I was also hugely impressed by the togetherness they achieved in the various duets, trios and quartets, particularly when accompanied by both piano and organ (a word of appreciation here for organist Peter Dutton, who was seated a good 20ft away from pianist and soloists, but

was totally part of the ensemble, despite playing from distant and buried keyboards). Pianist Tom Primrose gave a fine account of the extended, Bachian Preludio Religioso which would have been background music for the Offertory in a church performance. This was, without any reservation (and how rarely can one say that of performances by amateur choruses) a performance which gave genuine pleasure from first note to last. It was good to hear Christ’s Hospital Choral Society in such good voice, and clearly enjoying working with their new musical director. The Choral Society’s most popular concert is the Christmas concert, which, this year, will take place on Thursday 14 December, in the Chapel at Christs Hospital, starting at 19.30. Tickets are on sale now, available from the Christ’s Hospital Theatre Box Office. Prices £5 - £11, with refreshments served afterwards in the Dining Hall.

Volunteering Opportunities Building Heroes based in Pulborough is a charity which retrains military veterans for a career in the building trades. They rely on fundraising activities to fulfil their vital role in helping ex-service personnel into employment and need enthusiastic, friendly and reliable people to support and increase their activities and to raise the profile of the charity in the local area. If you can help organise fundraising events (e.g. sponsored walk, swim, bake sale, coffee mornings, etc, liase with community groups who may hold fundraising events for them, make phone calls to potential supporters, offer support at existing events (e.g. handing out flyers, providing information, serving drinks) or various other support tasks they would love to hear from you. Are you passionate about your community and want to make a difference? Emerging Futures train individuals to work as part of a coaching team to support their local community. Family recovery coaches help individuals in a family develop their own wellbeing and support system and to make valued life choices. And recovery coaches support individuals to move in to the community from structured treatment, detox, residential rehabilitation and prison. Pulborough and District Community Care Association needs a Wednesday club volunteer to help with activities at its social club for older people, for example short mat bowls, games, bingo, and the occasional outing - all accompanied by tea and cake. The association also needs a telephonist to work from home to take appointments for its Community Transport Service. Carers Support West Sussex needs support group co-facilitators to help provide a confidential space for carers to meet, offload and gain information. They also need telephone support volunteers to help carers share emotions and reduce stress and isolation by providing active listening. And the charity seeks young adult carer engagement volunteers to meet and communicate regularly with young adult carers to support them. If you want to know more about any of the opportunities above or are thinking of volunteering and want to know what’s out there, just log on to www.hamsva.org.uk/opportunities and explore the many ways in which you can get involved in your community. Can you help beat hunger by offering a couple of hours at your local Tesco store on Nov 30 or December 1 or 2? Volunteers are needed to help collect donation at the UK’s largest food drive this Christmas. The collections take place at Tesco stores UK-wide when volunteers are asked to help collect food donations from customers for a few hours in their local store and hand out the FareShare shopping list. John Mikel seals hat-trick of National Legends titles Motor Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter Faygate’s John Mikel successfully retained his UK National Legends Championship, notching up a hat-trick of wins – 2015-2017 - in his trade mark dashing orangecoloured Bonnie & Clyde style car (Number 4), sponsored by K-Seal. The long season started in March at Brands Hatch and after tightly fought contests in Anglesey, Caldwell Park, Croft, Donington Park and Snetterton, John returned

to the Indy Circuit at Brands, where the competition in the final weekend was as tough as ever, the title hanging on the very last race where, in front of 30,000 enthusiastic spectators at the iconic track, John lifted the title from a field of 34 cars with international drivers. John said “Mickel Motorsport is a tightly run operation and if you want to win, you need to put in the very hard work and time to ensure that the cars will perform. Then it’s all down to how we drive on track. There is no way I could

do all of this without my sponsors and partners who are a vital part of my Championship campaign each year. I always start off the season saying that if you get to 8,000 points you’ll win the title. This year we got 7670, its been so tight. That is what Legends racing is. If I’d have had one ‘Did Not Finish’ this weekend I would have lost the Championship. It’s all about how many races you finish in the top three and I’m thrilled to lift the title again!”The wet conditions on the final Saturday at Brands Hatch

made driving very difficult with the circuit greasy, but Mikel remained well-placed at the end of the day. On the Sunday glorious sunshine replaced Saturday’s gloomy weather with Mikel looking likely to significantly increase his points lead, and although competition was fierce Mikel was 200 points ahead with just two races of the season remaining. In fast fading light the last race of the MRF Legends Cars National Championship set off with John Mikel 24th on the grid and he battled through to

clinch the title with his final tally 870 points clear of his nearest rival. All of the action can be seen on TV later this month, at dates and times still to be released.

Roffey, cricket and much, much more 169176 CRICKET BK version 3:Layout 1 26/06/2017 14:32 Page 1

A HISTORY OF CRICKET IN ROFFEY UP TO THE GREAT WAR

By David Boorman

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Prolific local author, David Boorman has just had his seventh book published – and it is another cracker. After his highly entertaining book The Nutters (the story of Nuthurst Cricket Club) and his History of the Horsham Cricket Festival, to mark the centenary of the event, David’s latest book is the History of Cricket in Roffey. Although the period covered is up to the Great War, the introduction brings it up to date, recalling Roffey Cricket Club’s recent hattrick of Sussex Premier League titles – feats, as David says, that “shocked the Sussex cricketing establishment,” prompting the author to seek answers to the question as to “who are these Johnny-come-latelys?” How could Roffey achieve such heights when they are “considered privately by many to be little more than a jumped-up village team, destined always to live in the

shadow of their older, more prestigious and more exclusive neighbours, Horsham?” David Boorman had a particular reason for writing the book: “As a retrospective thank you to a club where I spent nine very happy years (opening the bowling) and to let anybody interested in such things know who Roffey CC are and where they sprang from. I vowed that I would come back and write about it – and I’ve finally got there!” The book is far from a dusty tome – as with all of David’s other books, it is very well researched involving hours of trawling through collections of newspapers at Horsham Library, Horsham Museum and the British Library at St Pancras. And, the book includes interesting local photographs and a plan of rural Roffey prior to the establishment of the present ground in 1904 behind the Institute from what had been an area of market garden, courtesy of benefaction from the Innes family, sugar magnates of Roffey Park. It is as

much a social history of the district as a history of Roffey Cricket Club, with many references to local places. David tells us, that the name Roffey derivates as far back as Norman times, when a hunting lodge for the adjacent deer park was known to be in existence at ‘Roughey’, with ‘rough’ meaning (roe) deer in late middle English and ‘hey’ a fence. The Star Inn dated back to at least 1783 and the Norfolk Arms from before 1807. There was a Star smock mill, a toll gate, and the nearby Horsham Union Workhouse was built in 1838/9 and continued to function for 100 years before becoming part of Forest Hospital until it was converted into residential use. The early history of cricket at Roffey is traced back to 1859 with formation of the first club being proposed at the Fountain, Littlehaven in 1881, following which matches featuring players with well known local names, took place against teams including Cowfold & Lower Beeding, Holmbush, Pound Hill, Rudgwick, Slinfold, Southwater and Warnham, with Barns Green, Billingshurst, Broadbridge Heath, Henfield, Horsham YMCA, Mannings Heath and Partridge Green not far behind. Wickets were variable and matches lowscoring, but sociable affairs, yet, despite initial activity, Roffey Cricket Club got off to a faltering start, folding and then re-emerging as Roffey United Cricket Club (at around the time when Littlehaven Cricket Club was playing behind the Fountain) and only really being to develop when they moved to the present ground from the ‘unsatisfactory pitch near the Norfolk Arms’. Following the Great War, Roffey Cricket Club was reformed in 1921. As David Boorman attests: almost a century later, both the Roffey Institute and Cricket Ground still play an integral and vibrant role in the local community, and, thanks to the far-sightedness of James Innes, cricket continues to this day on the little ground laid out and given to the fledgling club by his mother in 1904. Undeterred by the hard graft involved, David is working on other cricket books involving Rusper, Knepp Castle, Warnham Court and Warnham Lodge and early cricket at Nuthurst. Meanwhile, a limited number of copies of his Roffey book are available from the author – dave.boorman@ hotmail.co.uk

News of Horsham Cricket Club players Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Since the end of the season Horsham cricketers past and present have been in the news with Tom Haines signing his first professional contract, Will Beer getting another Sussex deal, Joffra Archer being named the county’s Player of the Year - and lengthening his tenure at Hove - while fellow nominee, left arm seamer George Garton has had his county contract extended to 2020 and, after England Lions duty, has been called up as cover into the Ashes squad on the Australian tour. Regrettably, Chris Nash is moving to Nottinghamshire, while Horsham all rounder Nick Oxley received the Sussex Academy Player of the Year Award. And, in the Sussex Premier League former Horsham opener Joe Ludlow picked up the Young Player of the Year accolade, with Horsham Captain Michael Thornely winning the batting prize with 642 runs and Michael Munday the bowling award – for the sixth consecutive year - with 45 wickets. Sadly, after taking almost 500 Sussex Premier League

wickets, 33 year old former Somerset leg spinner Michael is moving on, to join Reigate Priory, seeking a fresh challenge against the new teams that he will encounter in the Surrey League top flight. The departure of such a prolific and inventive player would clearly leave a void at any club and Horsham, eager to return to their glory years, are considering a number of options to boost their playing resources, with Bognor’s Joe Ashmore already signed. Ashmore took 47 wickets and made useful batting contributions in Division 1 in the recently completed season.

Horsham Ladies remain fourth with well-earned draw Saturday November 11 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Tulse Hill & Dulwich Ladies 2 2 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Prior to this game Tulse Hill & Dulwich – the second highest scorers in the league - were just below fourth placed Horsham Ladies in the table. Fortunes and advantage fluctuated throughout the hard-fought game, the result maintaining the combatants’ league positions. Horsham scored first – in the opening ten minutes from a trademark Suzy Clapp penalty flick. Tulse Hill then equalised from a short corner with a straight strike inside the post. Horsham defence subsequently found themselves busy and the experienced, well-organised hosts took the lead with a profes-

New season Grays and Kookaburra hockey in stock. Canterbury & Gilbert rugby boots and protective gear in stock. Updating of annual cups and awards engraved on-site

sionally constructed breakaway goal up the left, catching Horsham on the back foot. Horsham, though, restarted the second half with resolve, defending well amid end to end forays, during which Charlotte (CJ) White levelled the scores from a short corner before Horsham successfully closed the game down, keeping Tulse Hill at bay. Horsham’s Fran Crossley told the District Post: “We had players missing from our defence – including Gee Humphreys recovering from concussion incurred in a recent game. So, all in all, it was a fair result against a good side. We’ll be practising hard again this week and should be back at full strength for our game against Oxford University Ladies at Christs Hopspital on Saturday (14.00 start, following Horsham Men’s 1st team game).” The University side are currently sixth with three wins from seven starts.

Successful nominees also receive concessionary access to local training facilities, Set4Suc-

cess working in partnership with SportsAid to maximise support to young sporting talent, coordinating with national talent funding. The young recipients of the awards participate in a variety of different sports and the winners were: for Swimming – Amber Ranson, Harry Baker, Amelia Wright, Matt Boyes and Freya Fulcher and, for Basketball: Alexandra Baker, Josh Lea-Clayton and Josh Tavolieri, while Kristina Pavlou took the Judo award and Matthew O’Dwyer, Cleo Tomlinson, Lillie Franks and Seb Wallace received the Althletics prizes. And, at the South Lodge celebration, Invictus Games gold medallist Mike Goody and Commonwealth Games bronze discus thrower Jade Lally – making a welcome return to the Set4Success event – presented the first ever Neilcott Trophy, generously supplied by the construction company building the new Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. Issy Hayes received the inaugural Neilcott award in recognition of her outstanding 2017 biathlon year, during which she won the 1500m county title and

Courageous Boro overwhelmed at Heathfield Saturday November 11 – London 2 South East Heathfield & Waldron 47 0 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter There had been some doubt as to whether Pulborough would be able to fulfil this fixture because of serious injury depletions, a situation not unknown to Heathfield & Waldron earlier in the season. So, Boro earned the respect of their hosts, but their visit to Cross in Hand was not a happy one. Pre match rain had resulted in greasy conditions, causing substantial handling errors. In the absence of wind Boro elected to play down the slope and after a series of lineouts Fraser Goatcher got over the line for Heathfield. Boro were under constant pressure in scrummages and with Heathfield enjoying most of the possession Oli Robertson broke through for their second try.

Boro, though, were gaining territory through their backs, launching counter attacks but a close range knock on prevented them

They had a much changed team today and showed great heart against a bigger side from scoring before Heathfield’s Ed Koops added their third try. Then a Harry Reilly penalty gave Heathfield a healthy 18-0 lead at the break. Boro restarted strongly with repeated forays into Heathfield’s half and, had they been able to score a converted try, then the outcome might have been different, Heathfield’s confidence wavering after four consecutive defeats. But, Heathfield gradually gained more of the ball and went

further ahead with a Nick Cook try. Again Boro responded, keeping Heathfield’s defence busy until the hosts’ dominant pack enabled tries from Ollie Smith and then Lewis Headland, one maximised, to move the score to 35-0. Henry Armstrong and Robertshaw then put the icing on Heathfield’s cake with additional tries, the second of which was converted to take the final score to 47-0. Heathfield paid tribute to Boro saying: “They had a much changed team today and showed great heart against a bigger side. Special applause to Pulborough’s loose head 50 year old Alan Nye who played for their thirds last week and showed great commitment keeping going for the full eighty minutes against us.” On Saturday Boro are scheduled to travel to Haywards Heath for a Bob Rogers Cup Quarter Final tie. Heath are third in the league but Boro beat them 27-19 at home in September

went through to become the GB U13 Champion. Izzy Hilliard and Bronwen Thomas provided strong competition for the Neilcott Trophy – Izzy represented England in the Leverkusen Cup in Germany, the team earning a silver medal before she went on to do well at the British Olympic’s Team Competition - and leading Brighton & Hove Albion football player Bronwen was Young Wales Player of the Year, captaining their U17

These awards really do help young athletes by recognising their achievements side in the European Championships in addition to appearing for the senior international team three times. Jim Roberts, GB wheelchair rugby player and Rio 2016 paralympian provided a moving presentation outlining the obstacles that he has had to master after bacterial meningitis

robbed him of his legs, following which he took up his wheelchair sport. Jim expressed his admiration for the success of the young award winners and urged them to press for even greater heights, saying: “The Set4Success evening is really great to participate in to discover the great accomplishments of these kids – way more than I was achieving at their age! These awards really do help young athletes by recognising their achievements.” At the ceremony Horsham’s John Price was recognised for his outstanding contribution to local and national sport. John is the current President of Stoolball England, former President of Horsham Rugby Club and a valued member of the Set4Success management committee. And, Set4Success were delighted to receive a donation of £1000 from North West Sussex Seagulls, the local Brighton & Hove Albion supporters club. Applications for next year’s awards close shortly - if you match the criteria or know a suitable candidate then see www. set4success.org for details.

Horsham slip to fifth with disappointing loss Saturday November 11 – London 2 South East Deal & Betteshanger 31 15 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Prior to this game Horsham had won six out of eight of their matches and were fourth in the table, whereas Deal & Betteshanger were tenth and had been struggling, losing their previous three games, two of them heavily. But, the form book was no guide, especially as Horsham’s side was severely depleted by injuries and general non availability, the Green & White’s 200 mile round trip to east Kent ending in disappointment. In the continuing absence of skipper Tom Johnson, still sidelined with a long term injury, Joe Wilde suc-

cessfully resumed Horsham’s kicking duties with three first half penalties, but Deal led 17-9 at the break. Wilde successfully completed two more second half penalties and Horsham rang the changes with three substitutions but they were unable to cross the line and had to admit that Deal & Betteshanger were the better side on the day, deserving their victory. On Saturday Horsham travel to the Barn Elms Sports Centre, Wandsworth – adjacent to the Thames facing Fulham’s Craven Cottage across the river – to take on London Exiles in Round 2 of the RFU Intermediate Cup. After an indifferent start to the season (when they won just one of their first five games) Exiles have since won four consecutive matches and have moved up to fourth in London SW 2 League, Horsham’s equivalent competition.

YMCA storm back with emphatic league win Phil Johnson scoring the first goal

Hatrick hero Sam Schaaf

Photos by Keith Holmes Saturday November 11 Macron Store Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 6 0 Hassocks Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA bounced back from their cup disappointment at Lewes

with an impressive one-sided win, moving them up to fifth in the table. A half-hearted Hassocks attempt was easily caught by Aaron Jeal in the YM goal before retaliatory attacks saw Sam Schaaf hit the post and Dan Evans head over before firing wide from a free kick. Phil Johnson headed in, only for the goal to be ruled offside,

but such was the YM pressure that a goal was inevitable and it came in the 12th minute when Johnson struck from the left through the open Hassocks defence. Next Schaaf trapped a ball, evaded a defender, turned and kicked it into an empty goal with Hassocks keeper Ben Johns stranded elsewhere - and Schaaf scored again within a minute. Dan Evans

ballooned over as Hassocks got over-heated, getting their third yellow card when Johnson was floored. A rare Hassocks attack followed but YM were looking really threatening and after further Schaaf blasts, the second of which was palmed away, the resultant corner was tapped in by Callum Donaghey. Hassocks did then burst through, but Charlie

Pitcher’s attempt almost hit the corner flag, then the visitors’ best chance came from a potential own goal from a Tom Gilbert back pass. But, Hassocks were clutching at straws and they went 5-0 down when Schaaf completed his hat-trick just before the break. On the resumption YM soon had a corner and there were chances at either end with a Hassocks free kick going straight to Jeal before a Johnson strike was pushed onto the bar and away and a YM blast soared over. Hassocks were reduced to ten men and never looked like scoring amid unfulfilled attempts by Schaaf and Johnson. And, Johnson soon broke through and side-footed home YM’s sixth goal. At the death Luke Donaldson unleashed a spectacular flying header which just evaded the goal, but it mattered not, the result had never been in doubt. Delighted YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “That was a terrific response after Lewes – we really flew out of the blocks and might have been three up before we scored. Sam Schaaf was on fire and it was great to keep another clean sheet, helping with our goal difference if needed. We’re playing well but we’ve got a test on Saturday when we travel to Peacehaven & Telscombe – they’re a young wellorganised side and are second, just one point behind Haywards Heath Town.”

Hornets fight back to share points with Hastings YM battered at the Dripping Pan Tuesday November 14 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 2 2 Hastings Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In October Horsham and Hastings finished with a battling draw and in the re-match at Culver Road, Lancing again neither side could achieve a telling advantage, the Hornets fighting back after Hastings had scored twice in the opening minutes. Hastings – the Arrows – went ahead in the third minute when, after a failed clearance, Ollie Rowe got the ball in the net from close quarters. And, five minutes later, the Hornets were two down when Callum Davies – scorer of a hat-trick against Ashford in the Arrows’ previous game – burst through to slot home. Horsham, though, responded positively promptly clawing back the deficit when Dean Bown fired in from close range, latching onto a rebound from a George Landais

strike. Then, Horsham almost equalised, but Toby House shot wide before Lewis Hyde headed over. But,

Hastings were pressing, too - the woodwork coming to Horsham’s aid. After that escape Horsham were relieved to draw level when Landais beat Charlie Horlock in the Arrows’ goal. The second half

developed into stalemate - there were chances at both ends, but the sparkle of the first half had evaporated, until with a quarter of an hour to go, Bown’s strike was pushed away by the onrushing Horlock. Another Hornets’ half chance came and went but in the end both sides had to settle for a share of the points. On Saturday Horsham travel to highflying Greenwich Borough. Meanwhile it has been announced that the Bostik League have ruled that Horsham will have to replay their Velocity Trophy match against Walton Casuals, which they won 3-1 on 28 October. There was a problem over the eligibility of George Landais, on loan from Lewes. Although Lewes had not entered the Velocity Trophy this season, and had verbally agreed that they were content for Landais to play in the competition, Horsham did not submit written confirmation to the League’s registration department to that effect. Details of the replay arrangements are awaited.

Wednesday November 8 – Parafix Sussex Senior Cup 2nd Round Lewes 7 0 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Ahead of this game Lewes were top of the Bostik South League – the level above YMCA - and had lost only one of their 15 league games, winning eight of the last ten and scoring a seasonal tally of 34 goals and conceding just 11. So, although YM were in a good run of form, this was always likely to be a very tough challenge – and that it is what it proved to be, the hitherto impressive YM defence coming under unrelenting pressure at Lewes’ historic Dripping Pan. Rooks Manager, Darren Freeman made changes to the side that had recently humbled East Grinstead and, to emphasise the strength in depth of his resources, two of the replacements scored five goals between them. YM were immediately on the back foot, going two down in the opening exchanges – first when a Charlie Coppolla curler skimmed in from the bottom of the crossbar and then when Wilf Grimaud fired into an empty goal. The

Rooks were enjoying the lions’ share of possession but YM keeper Aaron Jeal kept further attacks at bay, until the 38th minute, when Jonte Smith fired in from close range. Jeal then saved another strike from Smith, but the lively forward put the Rooks four ahead just before the break. On the resumption Lewes continued pressing, and - after being denied by Jeal - in a rare YM attack, Mark Cave was thwarted by Chris Winterton in the Rooks’ goal. Lewes, though, went further ahead mid way through the second half when Smith notched up his hat-trick. Jeal prevented further damage until Smith scored his fourth with a close range scorcher and then, in the last minute, Ross Barclay, put the icing on the Lewes cake with their seventh goal. YM will now be keen to put their Lewes experience behind them and are relieved to return to Gorings Mead in their burgeoning league campaign - against Hassocks, five places below them in the table. YM are, though, still very much in cup contention with Quarter Final ties beckoning in both the Peter Bentley and RUR Charity competitions.

Kelly Johnson

Care Coordinator

Care Support Worker

I had a family member that was a Deputy Matron in a care home and I used to go in weekly and do the residents’ hair. They were short staffed and she said ‘Would I fancy trying care?’. I did training, a couple of shifts and I’ve not looked back.

I was working in the legal profession for 12 years before. The care support worker was a job that worked around my children really easily. I saw what my parents got from having carers and thought it would be something I’d like to give back.

I’ve build a really good career out of it! I’ve done lots of training, gained qualifications and it’s a really good career path now.”

The clients make the job special. When you meet them regularly and spend time with them; you really get to know them.

You can go into nursing, social work – all sorts of things once you’ve got your social care qualifications.

It’s the little things which make me glad I work in care. All the little thank yous, the little bits and pieces that eventually become one big thing. You can really make a difference.

Come along to one of our recruitment events for an informal chat with care providers. Or visit our website to let us know you’re interested and we’ll be in touch to tell you about local opportunities.
