James, who comes from Horsham, explained: “If there’s just one thing people can agree on after particularly divisive year, it’s that 2017 has been very eventful. I’m often asked if the ridiculousness of 2017 has made it easier for me to come up with cartoons, but it actually makes it harder. “The characters moving about on the world stage right now, and the headlines we read every day, are so outrageous that they almost don’t need me to make them funny. This is a great opportunity to step back and take a look back at everything that’s happened in 12 months – you can laugh and you can think about it 17.05 and, in some ways, I hope it can be cathartic for people.” The book comes as James’s cartooning career has blossomed. 1st Cowfold Scout Group re-enact Home Guard patrol In the lead up to Remembrance Sunday, 1st Cowfold Scout Group researched into how we celebrate the day. They also looked into the role the Home Guard and Wardens played during the war and made poppy themed art for display. On Remembrance Day, just over fifty young people, plus parents, grandparents and not forgetting some four legged friends, took part in an event at Shoreham-bySea. 1st Cowfold Scout Group patrolled the beaches as the Home Guard would have done. They then listened to talks about significance of poppies, Remembrance, Home Guard, Wardens and historical details about Cowfold during the war. It was a great chance for the scouts to immerse themselves in history and gain a fun way of understanding the past. One of the 1st Cowfold scout’s played trumpet for those attending
followed by two minute silence. The event was finished with investing new members and Leaders. Thank you to all those who attended. “I enjoyed taking part in the Remembrance event because it helped me remember the past and the men who were brave enough to fight for our country. It was respectful to take part in the two minute silence with the Beavers, Cubs, Explorers and Scouts. I helped lay the wreath on Shoreham beach and felt very proud.” Hugh aged 7 “This year we went to Shoreham beach for our Remembrance Sunday. Even though it was cold and windy, it was a lovely opportunity to remember the Home Guard, wardens and all other people that fought and served in the wars. While I was there, I thought about my great Grandpa and what it would be like to serve in the war.” Riley aged 9

Care home enjoy’s fundraising day for Children in Need
by Ellen Barker 1st Cowfold Group Scout Leader
Westlake care home organised a day of fun fundraising to boost the amount raised for Children in Need. Staff and residents from Barchester’s care home in Pondtail Road held a fancy dressing up day in aid of the Children in need charity on 17 November. General Manager, Elizabeth Higson said: “We held a similar event last year, which was really successful. Everyone had so much fun, whilst raising money for such a worthy cause, that we wanted to do it again - but raise more money. “Our residents really enjoy contributing to national events and they feel very passionate about care for children. “We put a lot of emphasis on organising events like this, because meaningful activities are not just fun, but help the residents’ physical and mental well-being. “We’re already preparing for

One of our residents, Florence Francis-Clare (aged 106!), said she was looking forward to the forthcoming events, which is also displayed on our website.” Fellow resident, Mavis Hiller (87), who also dressed up as the ‘Queen of Sheba’ said: “The day was a lot of fun all in aid of a really important cause. There’s always a lot of fun events here. As well as the baking sessions, I also enjoy the floor target games and musical quizzes and above all looks forward to all our outside musical entertainers.”

St. Catherine’s bring Christmas forward
Elaine Goddard, 51, is terminally ill and currently staying at St Catherine’s Hospice. Worried that she won’t be able to enjoy Christmas with her family, St Catherine’s helped her celebrate Christmas early. Here, Elaine shares her story. “St Catherine’s helped me decorate my room with a Christmas tree, twinkling lights, and hanging decorations. They’re very amenable and the nursing staff loved the idea of bringing Christmas forward as much as I did. I wanted to be able to celebrate a nice day with my family and give them some gifts. We brought in food and the nurses took pictures with my family and sung along to Christmas music. My brain tumours mean I can sometimes be forgetful so when my daughter arrived with the presents there was one sack for her but two sacks and two stockings for my son! I’d forgotten what I’d bought him so he got more gifts than I’d thought - he definitely did well! It was nice for me to see them opening their pressies. I didn’t want anything other than to see them. At the moment my health is rapidly going downhill. My illness has affected my vision, speech and hearing but I still want to fully take part in things and St Catherine’s is helping me do that. I’ve always loved celebrating and it’s brilliant I can continue to celebrate at the hospice. It means a lot that I can make things as lovely as possible for everybody. St Catherine’s is like a family and the staff and volunteers are more than 100% dedicated, they can’t do enough for you. They’ve got to know my family and being at the hospice makes me feel safe and relaxed. That’s a massive thing as it can be scary when you’re ill. It was a big shock finding out I’d got cancer as I’d never even been ill before and it meant all my plans for the future were gone. When St Catherine’s was mentioned I automatically

thought it’s the end. At the hospice everyone is so happy and positive though, and it’s taken away my fear because I know I’ll be looked after and the team will make me as pain free as possible. I feel so safe, I know I’m going to be okay. The only thing I can’t do is protect my family and I worry about them being left behind but I know they’ll support each other. Now I’ve come to terms with things I’m adjusting my life to try and fit in as many memories as I can. St Catherine’s
Now I’ve come to terms with things I’m adjusting my life to try and fit in as many memories as I can helps me look at things in a very positive way and I’ve got an advantage compared to people who are literally just run over because I’ve got chance to say goodbye to my family. I always thought a hospice would be miserable and depressing but it’s not at all, it’s lovely. It’s been a complete eye-opener learning what a hospice actually is and it’s one of the most worthwhile charities you can support. Helping me make the end of my life enjoyable has been one of the greatest gifts St Catherine’s could give me and my family.” It’s the little things that make a big difference. Donate today and help St Catherine’s be there to give more people chance to say a proper goodbye to their family and loved ones this Christmas. Visit: www. stch.org.uk/donate - Thank you.
Opinions sought on Rights of Way Management Plan
People’s opinions are being sought on the County Council’s draft Rights of Way Management Plan for 2018 to 2028. Anyone with an interest in accessing the countryside is encouraged to express their views. Deborah Urquhart, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We want to hear people’s opinions, whether they are someone who simply enjoys rural walks, or are a landowner or another stakeholder. All responses will be considered and the document will be amended as appropriate before publication in 2018.” The council manages more than 4,000km, or 2,500 miles, of Public Rights of Way, such as footpaths, bridleways and byways. The draft plan sets out its approach to managing the network, as well as signposting how improvements can be achieved over the next 10 years. The council’s vision for Public
Rights of Way is: “to enable people to enjoy the countryside on foot, by bicycle and by horse, for health, recreation and to access services, while recognising the need to balance this with the interests of those who live and work in the countryside and the management of special land-

The closing date is 31 January, 2018. Teenagers donate dog walkers’ bench to animal charity in Sussex
A group of 11 young people have donated a special dog walkers’ bench to the RSPCA. The group of 16 to 17-year-olds who are taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS), from Horsham and mid-Sussex, decorated a bench with colourful paint and paw prints to donate to the RSPCA South Godstone Animal Centre. This was part of the group’s social action project. The teenagers decided to support the animal welfare charity after head of education David Allen gave them a talk on the RSPCA and the five animal welfare needs earlier in the summer. Rose Abram, NCS project officer said: “They really enjoyed the talk from the RSPCA as they are a group
of animal lovers. It really inspired them to decide to support the charity and they came up with the idea of a bench when they saw an old, disused bench in Horsham Park. As many are dog walkers themselves, they wanted to make an enjoyable and functional space for dog walkers to rest and socialise. “They decorated the bench to represent the five needs of animals which they learnt in the session and they decorated it with footprints from lots of different animals.” The group pitched ideas and decided on how to fund their project by hosting a dragon’s den style activity before going ahead with the project.

Christmas Cheer and Festive Fare!
On Sunday (November 12) teenagers and staff from the NCS group visited South Godstone to deliver the bench and present it to the animal centre. They were also given a tour by centre manager Darren Parish. David Allen, head of education at the RSPCA, said: “We very much support the role of NCS in helping to build young people’s confidence and help raise awareness of social issues. It is so important that young people are exposed to the issues charities face, whether human or animal, and to show them how they can help to make a difference. “We were delighted they chose to support the RSPCA and it was brilliant to meet the group on Sunday. They had such a good time and have agreed to come back to the centre early next year to varnish, fix-up and improve the benches and picnic tables on site at South Godstone. This is the second group which has supported the centre with their volunteering initiatives and have really helped RSPCA South Godstone and the many animals the centre cares for.” The bench has now been placed on site as a welcome respite for volunteer dog walkers and guests. There will be plenty of tasty seasonal treats to try and buy and, while you’re looking for that perfect gift, you can enjoy live music and entertainment from musicians and choirs performing around the Museum site – all adding to the festive atmosphere. Don’t miss the Museum’s Christmas Gift Shop, where you can find a broad range of gifts, treats and stocking fillers. Why not warm up with some mulled wine or cider, or hot chestnuts while you browse? The seasonal fun doesn’t stop once visitors have finished shopping, as there is a lot to see and do. Explore the Museum’s 40-acre site and visit the 17th century watermill, feed the hungry ducks on the mill pond, greet the Museum’s heavy horses and meet the visiting donkeys.
Enjoy a Bustling Christmas Market at the Weald & Downland Living Museum this weekend. The Museum’s festive market offers superb value for money, with a reduced entry price to both the Museum and Christmas Market of just £6 per adult and £4 per child (free for annual members). The Museum’s buildings, including its magnificent Court Barn (home to BBC2’s popular Repair Shop series) and award-winning Downland Gridshell building, will be bustling with stalls and visitors can browse and buy from traders selling arts

Collyer’s bursary success
Collyer’s has, this month, presented bursaries to 10 new students, in recognition of their outstanding results at school. Bursaries were awarded to a student from each of the key local partner schools and to students achieving top grades from schools north, south, east and west of Horsham. Oliver Colbran (who previously attended St Wilfred’s), Maddie Carey and Ellie Hutchinson (Millais); Madhavi Dave (Ifield CC), Jennifer Goodier (The Weald), Hannah Gower (Warden Park), Lily Hadfield (Holy Trinity); James Maclean (Forest), Lawrence Schofield (Tanbridge House) and Charlotte Sutherland (Towers) were each presented with a cheque by Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley. Sally Bromley explained: “We attract students from right across the region, so it is fitting that we should also reward those coming to us from farther afield. I’m sure the money will be put to good use

to help support their education or extra-curricular activities while at Collyer’s. “It is important that Collyer’s recognise the outstanding work of our excellent partner schools, by rewarding some of our new students for their academic success in year 11.” Maddie Carey, who shared the Millais prize with Ellie Hutchinson, was thrilled: “I had such a fantastic time at Millais and I would like to thank all my teachers who helped and inspired me over the years. I would also like to thank all the staff at Collyer’s for continuing to support me in my studies. I am incredibly grateful for the generous bursary.” Jenny Goodier, who joined Collyer’s from The Weald in Billingshurst has settled in quickly: ‘’I am really enjoying my first term at Collyer’s and I feel very well supported in the transition from GCSE to A Level.’ Lily Hadfield, who joined
Collyer’s from Holy Trinity in Crawley said: “I am really surprised and pleased to receive this bursary and would like to thank the College for their generosity. Studying for my GCSEs was very intense but ultimately worth all the hard work! Thanks to the help and support of my teachers at Collyer’s, the transition from school to sixth form study has gone smoothly. “I have found the learning environment at Collyer’s encourages me to be independent in my studies and I am enjoying making the most of the many extra-curricular activities on offer.” Lawrence Schofield, who previously attended Tanbridge House, was delighted: “The supportive and vibrant atmosphere at Tanbridge allows students to thrive. I’m sure that the next two years will be just as enjoyable and exciting.” A quality education remains a top priority and it is no surprise that Collyer’s attract students from across the south east of England and internationally. Sally Bromley told the students: “You are a credit to the excellent schools you attended and I’m sure that they are extremely proud of your outstanding GCSE achievements! You’ve all made a great start to life at Collyer’s and I’m confident that your individual success stories can continue into advanced level and beyond.”

Sussex Charmer is cream of the crop as it beats top cheese makers
Sussex dairy farmers and cheese makers, Bookham Harrison Farms, has won Best British Cheddar at the Quality Food Awards 2017, beating the top Somerset cheddars. Sussex Charmer is a truly unique recipe based on cheddar and Parmesan cheese, created using Harrison and Sons’ milk, which is produced in Rudgwick near Horsham. The recipe comes from Rob Bookham’s extensive knowledge
of the cheese making process and the name ‘Charmer’ comes from mixing the names ‘cheddar’ and ‘Parmesan’. Tim and Rob were thrilled by the result: “We are absolutely bowled over to have won this award and can’t believe we have pipped cheddars from Somerset to the post! It’s been an amazing ten years of selling this product and we are so proud of it. It can truly be called unique, as no-one else in the coun-
try produces this cheese.” Launched in 1979, the Quality Food Awards are the most prestigious awards for food and drink products on sale in UK grocery outlets and are unique in that they reward great tasting products, with the finest of flavours, textures and aromas. They reward nutritious products, with the finest ingredients lists, while also recognising innovation, great packaging and presentation.
Expert judging panels are comprised of chefs, chef-lecturers, home economists, food writers, and consultants, restaurateurs, food technologists and representatives from regional food groups, all of whom bring their extensive knowledge to bear in the process. Sussex Charmer’s first ever award was back in 2008, when they won Best New Dairy Product at the prestigious Nantwich International Cheese Awards, the largest cheese awards in the world, before going on to win gold there six more times. Bookham Harrison Farms Ltd is a grand finalist in the Sussex Food and Drink Awards 2018. Going from strength to strength, they have now opened a coffee shop on the farm, called The Milk Churn, listed in the Top 10 best pubs, cafes and restaurants in the UK countryside in the Guardian in 2016. Sussex Charmer can be bought at farm shops throughout the UK, at retailers Sainsbury’s, Southern Co-op and Booths amongst many others, as well as being found at their hugely popular Sussex Charmer Cheese on Toast trailer at Goodwood Revival, Royal Ascot, RHS Hampton Court Flower Show, RHS Chelsea Flower Show and The South of England Show.

Horsham’s heroic peace maker
As the town and nation marked those who fell in the two world wars, it is apt to remember the remarkable story of a Horsham born man at the epi centre of peace making. Whilst the Bible may praise peace makers, in reality history and human nature is far more cruel, unless the peace is achieved after winning a great battle or war, failed peace makers are forgotten to the dustbin of history. And yet, if you visit St Andrew’s Church in Nuthurst, you will see a remarkable plaque to Sir Nevile Henderson of Sedgwick Park – a failed peace maker. Most children studying the origins of World War II will focus at some time on the Munich crisis, Thanks to Robert Harris’ new best seller, Munich, many adults are now also re-acquainted with the events of 1938. A central though now marginalised character in the crisis was our man in Berlin, Sir Nevile Henderson, a career diplomat who was born in grandeur at Sedgwick Park. Part of Horsham Museum’s many ambitions is to resurrect and make people aware of the district’s history. So when Karl Johnston, a former Collyer’s student and a recent history graduate of Exeter, asked to undertake a project before starting his MA, he was given the challenge of creating study notes on Sir Nevile for GCSE and A level students that the museum would then circulate to all local schools. Over the last 15 years or so, Sir Nevile’s ideas have been the basis of academic research by Peter Neville, Karl had the unenviable task of reading widely about the man and the academic articles and making it accessible for students. The Museum also asked if Karl could write a brief account for the local press. After marking the death of those that fell during World Wars an account of a heroic failure in
trying to make peace seemed an appropriate time to remember this Horsham born man. Nevile Henderson and the Munich crisis: Henderson spent his early years living at Sedgwick Park, his family’s estate near Horsham in West Sussex. Sedgwick would play a central role in Henderson’s life, he thought affectionately of his home, when the estate was sold upon the death of his mother in 1931, he admitted that something went out of his life that nothing could ever replace. Henderson received a privileged upbringing and, from graduating from Eton, began his diplomatic career in 1905. He served in a variety of roles in embassies in St. Petersburg, Tokyo, Rome, Nish, Paris, Constantinople, Cairo, Belgrade and Buenos Aires. The pinnacle of Henderson’s career saw him appointed as the ambassador to Berlin in 1937. The failure to maintain peace with the outbreak of war in 1939 saw the appeasers of 1938 come under ferocious criticism, and formed the orthodox interpretation of
‘Guilty men’ who mishandled the situation. Henderson was labelled by journalists as ‘our Nazi ambassador in Berlin’ because of his grievances toward the German people, his relationship with senior Nazis and his refusal to issue strong threats to Adolf Hitler. Furthermore, his diminishing relationship with the foreign office saw politicians and colleagues question his appointment, arguing there was no-one else to send. Nevile Henderson died in 1942 from cancer and became a convenient scapegoat for the mishandling of Germany. Due to this controversy, despite Henderson’s remarkable involvement in world history, he never came to be recognised locally for his contribution. Henderson’s position did receive some redemption in postrevisionist thought, although not all his mistakes could be pardoned, he should receive more credit for his work in Berlin. Because of this, Henderson deserves more recognition in Horsham and in local history as a man who used all his potential to work towards a just cause, the prevention of war. The later approach to Henderson addresses some but not all his previous criticisms. Henderson’s appointment was no mistake, he was promoted to this role upon merit and represented a new approach to Anglo-German relations. Despite his unorthodox diplomacy Henderson worked tireless to build relationships in Berlin and understand German grievances. He recognised the importance of adopting a moral position in international relations and rightly acknowledge the mistakes committed before him. Henderson many not have acted flawlessly in Berlin but he had the best intentions. Ultimately, no-one in the British government truly understood Nazism; success was most probably impossible given the nature of Hitler and the Nazi regime. Maybe if the peace secured in Munich had lasted, Henderson would be looked upon more favourably in popular culture. Nevertheless, rarely has a Horsham man had such a profound impact on world history as Nevile Henderson and the opportunity to celebrate his service to Britain in a time of crisis is one which should not be ignored or forgotten.

Christ’s Hospital Band at the Lord Mayor’s Show Photo by Clive Totman
Fortunately for the 144 floats and all the thousands of participants of the Lord Mayor’s Show on Saturday 11 November, the weather was drier than the downpour in 2016. The Christ’s Hospital Band was
one of the 20 bands taking part, this event being one of the most prestigious engagements in the School’s calendar. The 100 young musicians of the Christ’s Hospital Band were led
by Band Captain Yun Shin, 17, and were marching just behind the Mansion House Party towards the end of the parade – their signature piece ‘Sussex by the Sea’ was picked up by the BBC Lord Mayor’s Show broadcast. The Lord Mayor’s Show is in its 802nd year and marks Charles Bowman’s position as the The Rt Hon the Lord Mayor of London for 2017/18. Stepping down was Andrew Parmley, who kindly hosted 400 senior pupils for lunch at Guildhall to mark St Matthew’s Day in September, which is a celebration of the School’s 350 years presence in the City, before moving to Horsham in 1902. The Christ’s Hospital Band was first invited to be part of this famous procession in 1981. It was the Lord Mayor of the City of London who, in 1552, was actively involved in establishing Christ’s Hospital to educate ‘fatherless and poor children’. Today, 75% of pupils have a free or heavily subsidised boarding place.
Council encourages people to ‘Be Active’ Horsham District Council and Horsham Indoor Bowls Club (HIBC) are inviting people aged 45+ to come along and ‘Be Active’ by running a free “comeand-try-it” event at the Bowls Club opposite Tescos at Broadbridge Heath today (Friday 24 November) from 11am to 2pm. From jigsaw to Jenga, and target games to table tennis, there will be lots of activities on offer for people to try, with help, coaching and encouragement from both HIBC volunteers and staff from the council’s Sports Development team. Other activities available to try
include indoor bowls and, thanks to the amount of space available at the Bowls Club, participants can try out various fitness equipment pieces, table based games, such as table skittles, and target games, such as new age kurling. There will also be a golf chip challenge, a boxing punch bag available and fencing for anyone who fancies at go at this sport. All are welcome (regardless of fitness level or sporting experience) to drop in for any length of time between 11am and 2pm. The centre’s restaurant will also be open for participants to grab a bite to eat in between activi-
ties and bargains will be available from a bric-a-brac stall. People with health conditions and disabilities are particularly welcome to attend the event, as there will be enough variety of activities to ensure there’s something for everyone, with numerous experienced staff on hand to adapt activities to suit individual needs. The 45+ age designation is also more of a guide than a hard and fast rule; any adults who are keen to try something new and meet new people will be accommodated. Commenting on the new event, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “I am really pleased to see this joint partnership between the Bowls Club and our Sports Development team, at the council, delivering such an innovative event to benefit as many people as possible to get into physical activity and try new things. “Not only will this boost their health and fitness, but it will also give everyone the chance to socialise with other participants, which is equally important. “I would encourage as many of you as possible to sign up for this taster session and get involved.” Tony Hazell, one of the organisers from HIBC, commented: “We’re lucky to have fantastic facilities here and we’re keen for more people to see and benefit from them. Being active is obviously important but I’d also like to stress the social benefits that bringing people together in play brings. Think about the prospect of more friends as well as getting fitter!” For further information on the Horsham Be Active event, please contact Ian.ford@horsham.gov. uk or call 07764 146338.

Students photograph Royal Botanic Gardens Photo and story by Laura Andrews
Earlier this month, the Collyer’s photography department took their A level students to The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The trip was ably organised by the Travel and Tourism students as part of their events coursework. The students took in the amazing sights at Kew, which provided inspiration for their current project ‘The Environment’. The treetop walkway gave a fantastic bird’s eye view of Kew as the group was able to climb 18 metres high into the canopy of lime, sweet chestnut and oak trees. Georgia Gibson, a year 1 pho-
tography A-level student was delighted: “This trip to Kew gardens was extremely beneficial for our photography projects, we loved exploring all of the different areas and climates in the Palm House, the humidity surprisingly created interesting effects within our photographs”. The Hive designed by artist Wolfgang Buttress enabled students to step inside the life of bees and enjoy the unique multisensory experience. The arboretum and Palm House also provided stunning Autumnal colour displays and architectural
inspiration. Student Tom Epsley captured the complex patterns of The Hive: “I am new to photography, and found the trip amazing. I loved exploring the environment and using my camera; I’m so inspired to develop my work further.” Laura Andrews, Head of Photography said: “it was our first trip to Kew and we would like to thank the travel and tourism students for organising it for us. Staff and students alike were inspired by the stunning environment, we will definitely be returning in the future!”

Is it time to sell your business? This month our Award Winning Business Expert, Janette Whitney advises you on what to consider before selling your business
janette whitney Business Consultant www.whitneyassocs.co.uk
Selling your business could be the most important financial deal you’ll ever make, and perhaps the most emotional. Not all businesses are saleable – you can only sell your business if someone is prepared to pay for it. If you can’t identify strong reasons, that can be easily substantiated, why you business would make a good acquisition, it’s likely to be difficult to find a buyer. Many business owners put in a lifetime of hard work building their business only to throw away some of the rewards by failing to consider properly how they will exit from the business financially. Why you need an exit strategy When you start up your business you prepare your business plan to give you a clear vision of what you want to achieve from it. But to maximise the value you get from the business it’s essential to think about how you will leave it further down the line. Carefully planning your exit

from the business can help you to: Mould your business into the ideal shape for your chosen exit option – maximising the value you get from it. Groom successors if they are coming from within the business – whether they are a family member or part of your management team. Exit at a time of your choosing, when the business is doing well and the market conditions are advantageous. In an ideal world, you should include an exit strategy in your start-up business plan – as the army saying goes- ‘Before you go in, know how you are going to get out’, but at the very least you should start planning a few years ahead, usually 3-5 yrs ahead. Get the timing right: The best time to exit is when you are in a position of strength When your profits are increasing, not static When there is confidence in the economy and your business sector When the impact of seasonal trading patterns of your business are at their best. To take advantage of any beneficial tax changes e.g. retirement relief
Possible exit routes: Most exits from small businesses are sales through management buy-outs or family succession at a modest sale price, but there are several other options. Sale of business (trade sale) Management buy-out (MBO) Family Succession Management buy-in (MBI) Stock market flotation Merger Liquidation Need to discuss the future of your business? Catch Skerryvore on stage tonight at The Capitol
Skerryvore, recognised as ‘Live Act of the Year 2016’ at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards, has returned from a back to back tour of the USA and will be performing tonight (Friday 24 November) at Horsham’s Capitol Theatre. The band started as a four piece with their roots on the tiny Hebridean island of Tiree. Fraser and Alec Dalglish, who are both from Livingston in West Lothian met Tiree brothers Daniel & Martin
Gillespie while on holiday there. They take their name from ‘Skerryvore,’ the tallest lighthouse in UK which lies 12 miles south-west of the island of Tiree. All 8 members bring their own musical style to the Skerryvore mix. The more they have experimented with this mix, the more the band and their signature sound has evolved. Their earlier work was ‘West Coast Ceilidh’ inspired, with Celtic influences which have remained present in
all their work. As the band have developed, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Cajun and country influences have all emerged, but the traditional Celtic roots and instrumentation have remained. Catch Skerryvore tonight, for an evening you won’t forget! Performance: Friday 24 November, 7.30pm, Capitol Theatre. Tickets: £18, available from the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220 or online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com Box Office 01403 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com
The Wild Men of the Baroque hit The Hawth
Recorder maestro Piers Adams and virtuoso harpsichordist David Wright are the true Wild Men of the Baroque and they will be appearing in The Hawth Studio as part of the Classical Series this December. Their performances capture the spirit of the era in all of its passion and melodrama, bringing an astonishing, larger-than-life range of virtuoso techniques and expression to music of the baroque. They lead the audience through the uncharted landscape
of the era with fascinating insights into the music and instruments – and some entertaining anecdotes about the lives of the composers. The programme begins in the bizarre world of the Seicento (17th century) where experimental musicians, such as Biber, Castello, and Pandolfi, worked their extravagant magic on enthralled audiences. From here, Adams and Wright take in the thrill of 18th century masters, such as Corelli, Scarlatti and Handel,
before transporting their historic instruments into more modern times, with colourful works by Debussy, Piazzolla and Ligeti, in this dazzling concert of recorder and harpsichord wizardry. Hailed by the Washington Post as “the reigning recorder virtuoso in the world today” and by BBC Music Magazine as “a dazzling virtuoso star”, Piers Adams has achieved legendary status in the recorder world. Calling Christmas Jumper Designers
There are lots of Christmas jumpers at this time of year but if you could design your very own, what would it look like? That’s just what Henry Adams estate agency is asking local schoolchildren in their latest competition. Children in primary schools across the region are invited to design their perfect Christmas jumper. “We want the children to let their imagination run wild,” said Dee Tickner, Community Liaison Coordinator at Henry Adams. “For example, would you have a picture of a Christmas scene or a festive star? Maybe you prefer flashing lights, penguin patterns, seasonal slogans or even a funny rhyme? Whatever their ideas, we want to hear from them!” Dee is teaming up with partners and staff from Henry Adams’s local sales and lettings offices to visit primary schools inviting children to take part. Each child
will be given an entry form with a jumper template to take home, onto which they can draw, paint, stick or sew a design. When it’s complete they can either take the design to their local Henry Adams office for a very warm welcome and sweet treats or simply return it to their school for their entry to be included. “Of course, no competition would be complete without prizes,” added Dee. “We will have a chocolate lolly for one winner in every year group and the overall winners from the infants and juniors will each receive a chocolate reindeer - sporting his very own Christmas Jumper!” Following the judging, the jumper designs will be displayed in Henry Adams offices in the lead up to Christmas. Visitors are welcome to visit to see what the talented children from our local communities have designed this Christmas.

The Route to Success GL & Co Estate Agents are celebrating winning a prestigious award for their charity fund raising at the recent Mayfair Group annual conference and dinner. The awards dinner is held at the RAF Club in London’s Piccadilly and is a high point of the year for the UK’s leading independent estate agents. Firms from across the UK and from overseas met at the dinner and once again competition for the top group awards was fierce. Neil Moore, Managing Di-
rector, said, “We are thrilled to have received an award this year for our charity fund raising for Sussex charities. This represents a terrific team effort across our whole company and we are more than delighted to have come out top against some of the strongest and most influential firms in the country.” The award won was the Jenny Murray Punchbowl. This is presented to the firm which has contributed the most to charity over the year through its company fundraising efforts.

Volunteering Opportunities Building Heroes based in Pulborough is a charity which retrains military veterans for a career in the building trades. They rely on fundraising activities to fulfil their vital role in helping ex-service personnel into employment and need enthusiastic, friendly and reliable people to support and increase their activities and to raise the profile of the charity in the local area. If you can help organise fundraising events (e.g. sponsored walk, swim, bake sale, coffee mornings, etc, liase with community groups who may hold fundraising events for them, make phone calls to potential supporters, offer support at existing events (e.g. handing out flyers, providing information, serving drinks) or various other support tasks they would love to hear from you. Are you passionate about your community and want to make a difference? Emerging Futures train individuals to work as part of a coaching team to support their local community. Family recovery coaches help individuals in a family develop their own wellbeing and support system and to make valued life choices. And recovery coaches support individuals to move in to the community from structured treatment, detox, residential rehabilitation and prison. Pulborough and District Community Care Association needs a Wednesday club volunteer to help with activities at its social club for older people, for example short mat bowls, games, bingo, and the occasional outing - all accompanied by tea and cake. The association also needs a telephonist to work from home to take appointments for its Community Transport Service. Carers Support West Sussex needs support group co-facilitators to help provide a confidential space for carers to meet, offload and gain information. They also need telephone support volunteers to help carers share emotions and reduce stress and isolation by providing active listening. And the charity seeks young adult carer engagement volunteers to meet and communicate regularly with young adult carers to support them. If you want to know more about any of the opportunities above or are thinking of volunteering and want to know what’s out there, just log on to www.hamsva.org.uk/opportunities and explore the many ways in which you can get involved in your community. Can you help beat hunger by offering a couple of hours at your local Tesco store on Nov 30 or December 1 or 2? Volunteers are needed to help collect donation at the UK’s largest food drive this Christmas. The collections take place at Tesco stores UK-wide when volunteers are asked to help collect food donations from customers for a few hours in their local store and hand out the FareShare shopping list. In just three hours you could collect enough food to make 600 meals and change someone’s Christmas. Details are available at www.fareshare.org.uk/food-collection where you can also sign up for a shift.

Horsham Ladies secure hard fought draw Saturday November 18 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 1 1 Oxford University Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Oxford University were bigger physically, but Horsham’s young side battled hard, scored first and might well have won this close encounter. Hannah Simpson in the Horsham goal kicked an early Oxford attack clear before a home strike went across the front of the Oxford goal, but the visitors made the early running – until Horsham came more into the game with increased possession. Then, an Oxford rebound shot hit the post, inspiring Horsham to attack and both sides had short corners, but the score remained 0-0 at the break thanks to two more impressive Simpson saves. But, five minutes into the second half a long range Bex Ross free hit found Horsham’s Louisa Denman who battled through from the left to strike home. After a Horsham short
corner was blocked, Oxford broke away to no avail and were subsequently denied by the woodwork. Horsham then went on the rampage with three short corners but Simpson was called on to keep Oxford at bay during a similar barrage at the other end. With both teams managing to nullify the other’s attacks Horsham hoped to continue to keep the visitors at bay – until, after a failed clearance, Oxford scored with seven minutes remaining. Horsham immediately responded but victory eluded them and after a late Oxford short corner both sides had to settle for a share of the points. Horsham Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “It was frustrating that we didn’t win but it was a good, competitive game.” Horsham skipper Hannah Simpson added: “I prefer not to be quite so busy! Our girls played very well, though – they just ran and ran.” On Saturday the ladies travel to Hampshire to tackle third-placed Basingstoke, the team one place above them in the league.
Horsham secure welcome draw Saturday November 18 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 2 2 Oxford University Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Coming from six straight losses Horsham were pleased to stem the flow of defeats with their first draw of the season, but, after being two goals to the good against not overly threatening Oxford University a much-needed win had seemed to beckon. Having previously fired over, Barney Knights Johnson put Horsham ahead in the fourth minute when he broke through from the left, won four tackles and struck home. At the other end Horsham Captain Andy Isaacs saved well at full stretch, before, following a Joey Humphreys attack, Ellis Woolley converted a short corner to put Horsham two ahead and in total command eleven minutes into the game. Oxford induced another Isaacs save and then, against the run of play amid Horsham dominance, clawed back a goal, when Alex Copestake swivelled and found the net. With Horsham losing the ball, Oxford were beginning to get more possession and
the half time whistle came as something of a relief. On the restart Knights Johnson earned an unfulfilled short, but Oxford had opportunities with five set pieces of their own. Horsham, though, were defending well and a Freddie Campbell breakthrough went unrewarded, until Oxford equalised when Nick Leach maximised their eighth short corner. Oxford kept plugging away as Horsham’s attacks dried up and penetration evaporated, but neither side could snatch a win. These were two evenly matched sides, but there were encouraging signs that Horsham, with so many new players, are beginning to gel, skipper Isaacs telling the District Post: “We’re learning and we’re getting there. I just hope that we don’t go in to the Christmas break with fewer points than last year (when Horsham hit a bad patch in the run up to the festive period, but came good in the New Year to maintain their league status).” On Saturday Horsham have a tough trip to Battersea to take on current runners up London Edwardians, who, after drawing with Bromley & Beckenham last Saturday, surrendered top spot to Oxford Hawks.

Sussex appoint inspirational Jason Gillespie as Head Coach
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Shortly after Sussex CEO Rob Andrew had said that he was in no hurry to appoint a Head Coach following the departure of Mark Davis, a surprisingly quick announcement has confirmed that 42 year old Aussie Jason Gillespie will be joining the county to fill the role. Gillespie comes with impeccable credentials – both as a player and coach - in all three formats of the game for Australia, as a right-arm fast bowler he took a total of 402 wickets in 169 international appearances. And, he was a more than useful batsman with an unbeaten Test double century. Domestically, he played for South Australia, Yorkshire – for whom he broke the record for a number
10 batsman by scoring 123 not out against Surrey at the Oval - and Glamorgan and, on retirement from first class cricket, he competed for Ahmedabad Rockets in the Indian Cricket League. He was then a coach in Zimbabwe and the IPL before becoming Yorkshire’s first team coach from 2012 to 2016. In his first season with Yorkshire they were promoted from Division 2 in the County Championship and in the second they were runners up in Division 1, then he led them to two successive County Championships in 2014 and 2015. Yorkshire narrowly missed a hat-trick of titles in 2016 and at the end of that season, to the disappointment of Yorkshire members, Gillespie returned to Australia, citing family reasons. During our winter he had coached Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League and, having been a candi-
date for an England role, he made a surprise return to English cricket last season in Kent’s coaching set up, saying that, at that moment, short term appointments appealed. Most recently he was interim Head Coach for Papua New Guinea. Jason Gillespie is the first Aboriginal to become a Test cricketer, he has four children and, as a vegan, has criticised dairy farming and the use of leather cricket balls, causing some controversy at Yorkshire when they were sponsored by a dairy. He joins Sussex on an initial three year deal and will arrive in the New Year in time for pre-season preparations. Rob Andrew says: “Jason is exactly the experienced Head Coach we hoped to attract. He has enormous experience of the English county game after his very successful spell at Yorkshire. We believe we have a very talented young squad and we need a bit of stability and a coach of Jason’s experience to help mould a successful team over the next few years.” Jason added: “I am thrilled to be given the opportunity of taking the reins at such a proud and traditional club like Sussex. I know there is some excitement around the capabilities of the current playing group and I look forward to playing my role in helping Sussex to achieve its goals for 2018 and beyond. After dissatisfaction with recent results and discontent in the camp leading to the departure of Horsham’s Chris Nash to Nottinghamshire, Sussex members will be pleased that the county have shown that they mean business by appointing a Head Coach of Jason Gillespie’s pedigree.
Roffey Cricket Club thrilled with Jamie Atkins’ Academy place Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sussex County Cricket Club has just announced the names of the eight boys that have been awarded places in their Academy for the 2018 season and Roffey’s Jamie Atkins is delighted to be included. 15 year old right arm seam bowler Jamie made his debut for Roffey’s 1st XI in the Sussex Premiership last season and won the club’s prestigious Darren Webb Young Player of the Year award. Sussex say: “Jamie bowled consistently well as an under 15 year old in the county U17 side that shared the three-day championship in 2017.” Jamie attends The Forest School, joins Horsham’s Tom Clark at the Academy, and tells the District Post: “I’m really enjoying training two or three days a week with the Academy at Sussex’s Hove HQ, both in the indoor school and in their classroom. And, I’m looking forward to playing for Roffey next season, when I hope to cement a regular spot in the second team and manage to break through with a
game or two for the firsts.” Proud father Jon added: “The family are elated, of course. Jamie has worked very hard at his game and has got into the Academy a year earlier than most of the others.” Almost all of the Academy intake come from public schools such as Hurstpierpoint or Ardingly where there are cricket coaches and many matches, so it is an impressive achievement for Jamie to break into Sussex cricket from a school where not too much cricket is played. Academy Director Carl Hopkinson says: “I’m very excited about this year’s Academy intake – we’ve got a good mix of spinners, seamers all-rounders and top-order batsmen and a good mix of age ranges across all these disciplines. All those included in the new intake played a part in the U17 success in the County Championship which highlights the strength of this group of players.” Roffey Cricket Club has featured prominently in Jamie’s development and, speaking from Australia where he is playing this winter, Roffey Captain Matt Davies said: “Everybody at the club is really pleased for Jamie regarding his
inclusion in the Academy. He’s a good young bowler and certainly has a big part to play for Roffey next summer. So, training with the Academy will certainly benefit his game - and subsequently strengthen our first team at Roffey!”

Horsham bow out of the Intermediate Cup Saturday November 18 – RFU Intermediate Cup – Round 2 London Exiles 37 27 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham travelled to the Barn Elms Sports Centre, Wandsworth – adjacent to the Thames facing Fulham’s Craven Cottage across the river – to take on London Exiles in Round 2 of the RFU Intermediate Cup. After an indifferent start to the season (when they won just one of their first five games) Exiles have since won four consecutive matches and have moved up to fourth in London SW 2 League. And, coming in to the game, Horsham were fifth in their equivalent league, London SE2, so it was likely to be a close encounter. Horsham remained in touch

throughout, but conceding points at critical times ultimately cost them the game. Exiles’ league successes plus home advantage enabled them to start with confidence and in the opening 30 seconds they scored a try, followed by a penalty, but Horsham hung in and a Jordan Bell penalty reduced the deficit to 8-3 after 17 minutes. In appallingly wet conditions accurate handling presented a challenge but the Exiles led 15-10 at the break, after Mike Watts had got over the line for Horsham, maximised by Bell. On the restart Exiles immediately scored a converted try, putting Horsham under pressure, but a Josh Steggles try, with a successful kick from Bell maintained Horsham’s competitiveness. Horsham made substitutions before Bell was in action again with a penalty and a conversion of his own try but
Exiles were not to be denied and their 22 second half points put them through to the next round, a little more easily than perhaps might have been the case. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “Given their recent form we expected a tough game and that’s what we got. They were certainly not unbeatable but we gave them an eight points head start. We were always in contention but kept allowing them back in with silly mistakes. We’ve got a tough league game back at home on Saturday – against second placed Hove, but, although we’ll still be missing our injured Captain Tom Johnson, we should be almost back to full strength.” Hove have seven wins from their nine starts and are currently five points behind runaway leaders Dartfordians.

Historic first Hornets win against title-chasing Greenwich Saturday November 18 – The Bostik League – South Division Greenwich Borough 0 2 Horsham
Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough’s Jess Breach – daughter of the club’s Head Girl’s Coach John – had a dream Test debut for England last Friday, being instrumental in the 79-5 win against Canada at Saracens’ Allianz Park in Hendon, North West London. Jess scored a record breaking six tries in her first Test match – the best performance of any England rugby player on debut. Winger Jess had notched up her hat-trick within 30 minutes and ended only one try short of England Women’s all time record (held by the just retired Kay Wilson with a recent
seven against Scotland). Jess might have equalled the record but off-loaded to full back Ellie Kildunne, also on debut. Incredibly her performance did not earn Jess the Player of the Match award, but the adjudicator subsequently had the grace to admit that, on reflection, the decision might have been different. Now with Harlequins, Jess progressed from Pulborough U18s to win an England cap in the HSBC World Women’s Sevens at Clermont Ferrand, France in July, having previously played for the national side at U20 level. Talking of Jess’s full international debut against Canada, England Head
Coach Simon Middleton said: “It wasn’t as if her tries were walk ins – with the pace Jess has got, give her some space and she’ll take it. She is a great finisher and she created one or two of the tries herself. She is an unselfish player, too – she could have put herself through but she put Ellie in instead.” With England one up in the series Jess was rested amid eight changes in the second Test at the Twickenham Stoop ground on Tuesday evening (where England won 49-10). The final Test of the three match series is at Twickenham on Saturday with coverage on Sky Sports Arena (Channel 408) from 17.30.
£694.63 raised by various donation from members of the club Stan was also very pleased to be able to present the winner of the raffle on the day:
At Eltham’s DGS Stadium Horsham tore up the formbook, coming away with all three points in their first ever win against high flying Greenwich Borough. After a telling run in October, Greenwich were second coming into this game, sixteen places ahead of Horsham in the table, so this was a highly creditable win for the Hornets. No quarter was given or taken in the first half and not too many chances created, but Horsham worried Greenwich when their keeper, George Kamurasi, was called on to palm Dean Bown’s shot away for a corner, which Joe Shelley headed over. Then, with Bown through and in pursuit of the goal, Kamurasi rushed out of the area and hand balled, a clear sending off offence, despite the culprit’s objections. The Hornets immediately took advantage of stand in keeper Liam Hickey when Shelley headed home a corner in the 35th minute. And, it might have got worse for Greenwich but attempts from both Jack Hartley and Bown were negated, Horsham leading 1-0 at the break. Greenwich, though, came back out fighting and it took monumental efforts for the Hornets to keep them at
bay, when first Lewis Hyde stretched himself to turn MacDonald’s strike away for a corner, before keeper Brannon Daly prevented Pritchard’s header. Then a Jack Barnham strike whistled over the Hornets’ crossbar, but Horsham were challenging, too – George Landais’ long range shot going past the post. Persistent rain created handling difficulties, but Daly gathered Travis Gregory’s shot before two Horsham subs were in action, former Greenwich player Liam MacDevitt supplying Toby House, whose effort earned a corner, then MacDevitt fired over. After Daly had saved a
Scott Harris covered a lot of ground before unleashing a right footer into the goal further Greenwich foray the Hornets put the result beyond doubt when midfielder Scott Harris covered a lot of ground before unleashing a right footer into the goal with half an hour remaining. Harris subsequently tried again, but Hickey managed to get the ball away. With MacDevitt and House causing problems for the hosts Horsham successfully closed down the game, Manager Dom di Paola praising his side for their outstanding achievement.

YMCA contain runners up Peacehaven in battling draw
Photos by Keith Holmes
Saturday November 18 – Macron Store Southern Combination Football League – Premier Div Peacehaven & Telscombe 1 1 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Since being beaten by lowly Arundel Horsham YMCA really have turned their season round with impressive results against high flying clubs and they came
into this game on the back of five straight league wins, during which they overturned Haywards Heath Town, Eastbourne Town and Saltdean United, all well above them in the table. And, the visit to Peacehaven and Telscombe’s Unibet Arena was another tough assignment with the hosts in the runners up spot. Although Peacehaven clearly respected YM, they did make the early running, Curt Ford testing Aaron Jeal, who pulled off a stunning save in the YM goal.
But, the YM defence, such a
The second half turned in to an unforgiving contest with both sides battling for supremacy strong component of their recent success, was again up to the task
– until the 15th minute, when a Peacehaven build up finished with Marshall hammering in a goal from ten yards. The hosts mounted further attacks, but YM were challenging, too and when a cross found Phil Johnson he skilfully headed past Peacehaven’s keeper Aga to equalise. Action then switched from end to end with both defences denying their opposition, the score remaining 1-1 at the break. The second half turned in to an unforgiving contest with both
sides battling for supremacy. Peacehaven’s Lira was on the money, but his shot hit the bar and rebounded to Ford, who could only fire well wide. YM looked threatening on the break but were unable to produce a winner as the game ended in a competitive draw. As a result YM drop to eighth in the very tightly bunched table, with the opportunity to improve their position when they travel to Littlehampton Town, ten places below them.
Lack lustre Hornets exit the Velocity Trophy Tuesday November 21 – The Velocity Trophy Round 2 Walton Casuals 3 0 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was a rematch of the game first played in October after which the Bostik League ruled that Horsham had to replay the game - which they won 3-1 – because of a problem over the eligibility of Lewes loanee George Landais. Lewes had not entered the Velocity Trophy and had verbally agreed that they were content for Landais to play in the competition, but Horsham did not submit written confirmation to the League’s registration department. In the first match Horsham put in an impressive
second half display, winning at a canter after being a goal down. But, last Tuesday their visit to the new state-of-the-art Elmbridge Sports Hub ended with the Stags denying the Hornets the opportunity to visit Dulwich Hamlet in the next round. After beating high flying Greenwich Borough in the league on Saturday Horsham kept the Stags at bay in the first half but were outplayed after the break when three goals saw them eliminated from the competition. The Stags had an early first half opportunity but Daryl Coleman’s shot was negated by Michael Hunter in the Horsham goal. Then, another
Coleman foray was cleared before Liam MacDevitt ballooned over for the Hornets. Walton were in the ascendancy, Joe Hicks and Isaak Sarpong testing the Horsham defence, but Dean Bown and Charlie Farmer had unfulfilled chances for the Hornets, the first half ending with neither side on the scoresheet. Bown might have put the Hornets ahead shortly after the break, but Walton escaped when he fired wide and the Stags soon made Horsham pay when Sean McCormack latched onto an errant back pass for a gift goal. Worse followed when, four
minutes later, Coleman blasted home. Horsham were then given a reprieve when McCormack crashed over rather than slotting home a seemingly certain goal. The midfielder, though, soon made amends when he scythed through the Hornets’ defence to supply Sarpong, who made no mistake with the rebound from his header. This was a disappointing display from the inconsistent Hornets, who, on Saturday return to Lancing in league action against sixth placed Hythe Town. Then, on Tuesday, 28th, the Hornets (18th) have a long trip to the east coast to take on another Kent side – mid-table Herne Bay – who ended the Hornets’ FA Cup dreams with a 5-2 demolition at Lancing in September.
