Sailor honoured with special headstone 99 years after death A young sailor who died during the First World War was given a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone on Saturday, October 28 in Rusper, nearly a hundred years after his death. Leading Seaman, Robert Norris Weaver, died at his home in Horsham, aged 22, on August 10, 1918 from Tuberculous, after being injured on active duty and developing dysentery. He was discharged from the Navy on health grounds in January 1917. The special ceremony was held to mark the event with Robert’s family members attending. There was a reading from Robert’s letters and prayers by his Great Niece, followed by the Last Post, a minute’s silence, the Reveille and a blessing. Robert, or Bob as he was known to his family, was the youngest of seven children born to Frederick and Emma Weaver. On the 3 September 1914, Robert, who worked as a joiner and metal worker at the time, signed up to join the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He was described as having brown hair, hazel eyes and 5ft 11 ¼ inches tall. He started his training in Bellshanger Camp but by the November, he had moved on to the

Royal Naval Barracks at Portsmouth, which Robert described in a letter home as ‘the finest barracks in the world, they are simply spiffing.’ In 1914, Robert wrote that he hoped to be home for Christmas before being sent to the front at the end of January 1915. It was during the New Year that he was officially promoted to a Leading Seaman Higher Grade. Robert was attached to Nelson Battalion, then later to Drake Battalion as a Lewis Gunner. His first posting abroad was Port Said, Egypt. When Robert died, his death was never registered with the CWGC and, therefore, he never received a war graves headstone or was mentioned on the Roll of Honour. Les Kibble, Regional Manager for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in the South East, said: “We’re always honoured to be able to give those who died during both world wars the recognition they deserve for their ultimate sacrifice. “At the time of Robert’s death, the CWGC were not informed and therefore did not have the opportunity to give him a Commission headstone.

Copsale Hall Pumpkin Day Pumpkins were in abundance at the annual Copsale Hall Pumpkin day on Sunday. Once the doors opened at 10.00am there was a constant stream of every conceivable size and shaped pumpkin through the door. Those who had registered earlier in the year for the largest grown pumpkin brought along their giants. Bill Cable managed to retain his title, for the second year, with a whopper which was easily the winner. However, the challenge was more hotly contended for who might take second place and this was narrowly won by Jan Pieniazek. Inside the Hall, there was the eagerly anticipated ‘lights out’ at 11.00pm, as all the carved pumpkins that had been brought

along were lit by battery operated tea lights and the curtains were drawn to show them off in their full glory. There was a fantastic variety of carvings on display, ranging from simple to complex, large and small, funny or scary. Judge, David Hilliam Chairman of Mannings Heath Horticultural Society, had the difficult job of awarding a medal to his favourite. The delighted winner of this was young Nathaniel, who had created a gruesome design on his pumpkin. Entry for 2018 for the person who can grow the largest pumpkin will be taking place at the beginning of next year. Student council event raises money for Cancer charity

Collyer’s students and staff have raised over £550 for the Cancer Research UK charity. A fancy dress rag event, in conjunction with a “Spookfest” theme run by the RCU (Richard Collyer Union) proved a huge success and was supported by teachers, support staff and the student body. Collyer’s Assistant Principal, Dan Lodge, was delighted: “The fancy dress event was fantastic and it was great to see the Collyer’s community really coming together to support the outstanding work of the Cancer Research UK charity.” Noami Lask, who manages the College Council, was very

proud: “To raise £550 is a phenomenal achievement, and this is only our current total, as there is still more coming in!” Deputy Principal, Steve Nicholls, was frightened: “The spooky film showing was obviously very popular, but my favourite part of Spookfest 2017 has to be the spooky bake sale. It was a great chance to eat comfort food while being scared!” Dan Lodge added: “Huge thanks to the students of the RCU and Noami Lask for arranging this clever and humorous way to support such a wonderful charity. Well done everyone!”

BBC film Pudsey and Pals for Children in Need TV show still to be collected from sponsorship. The BBC sent a camera crew along to film for a slot that will be broadcast on the Children in Need show, hosted by Graham Norton, on Friday November 17; Tune in and you might catch a glimpse of yourself on TV! There will be another chance to buy some Pudsey ears, wristbands and other official merchandise to wear while watching the show, at the Horsham Saturday Market in the Carfax on Saturday November 11, from Horsham Rotary Club stall. Horsham Rotary Club member Dave Smith said: “We would like to thank the people of Horsham who, once again, came out in

We would like to thank the people of Horsham who, once again, came out in force to support this fun day During the half term, the now annual Horsham Rotary Club BBC Children in Need day once again attracted a large number of people to the Carfax, to have fun and enjoy a wide variety of activities. TV personality Dave Benson Phillips joined with Pudsey Bear and his friends to perform three sing-a-long shows on the bandstand and Benson’s Funfair provided children’s rides and a thrilling bungee trampoline.

Hundreds of children had their faces painted in a Pudsey style, while others loved having a balloon sculpture made for them. The staff from The Pavilions and Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centres put on fun and games and the WSCC Family Centre conducted a wide array of activities in their marquee. The biggest crowd pullers on the day were the ever popular steam bus supplied by local plant hire company Les Searle Group,

the fantastic birds of prey brought down and displayed by Huxley’s, who are based at Hillier’s Garden Centre, and the three superb Fast & Furious replica cars that were in demand from the young and old for a photo at the wheel. Horsham Rotary sold Pudsey merchandise from their stall and great fun was had by all. The main reason for the day was to raise funds for Children in Need and the entertaining day raised thousands - with more money

force to support this fun day that provides vital funds for a wonderful cause. We would also like to thank the many contributors and market stall holders who joined in so willingly, all helping us to help Children in Need.” Further information about Horsham Rotary Club can be found on the club Facebook (Rotary Club of Horsham) and Twitter (@HorshamRotaryUK) pages.

Confused about smart meters? Citizens Advice is here to help. Central and South Sussex Citizens Advice is holding a series of events across West Sussex, to inform local residents about the energy smart meter rollout. The events are primarily aimed towards over 65s but are open to everyone. By 2020, every household in Britain should have been offered a smart meter by their energy supplier. These are a new type of meter for gas and electricity. Smart meters send meter readings directly to energy suppliers and have displays that show you exactly how much energy is being used, and the cost of that energy. Smart meters should mean that manual meter readings, estimated and back bills should become a thing of the past. Smart meters will also allow consumers to access more detailed information about their personal energy use, which can help with deciding about switching and energy efficiency. The rollout aims to lower gas and electricity use and manage future energy demand. There will be a trained adviser from Central and South Sussex Citizens Advice at Horsham library on Thursday 7th November between 1:30 and 3:30pm to answer your questions. “I’m glad I’ve switched” Mavis Merwood switched over to a smart meter last year and

is pleased with the result: “I’ve had no problems with them and I don’t have to deal with estimated readings or get into my bin cupboard to read my meter.” Citizens Advice has produced a series of tips for those interested in having a smart meter installed, available at cassca.org.uk/smartmeters. Alternatively, for more information, contact the Citizens Advice consumer service: Telephone: 03454 04 05 06 Textphone: 18001 03454 04 05 06 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Mavis Merwood switched

Local pupils have raised over £300 to help overseas communities living in poverty to grow enough food this Harvest. St. John’s catholic primary school in Horsham has held a series of fundraising events to ‘brighten up’ the lives of young people around the world, as part of development charity CAFOD’s Harvest Brighten Up campaign. Pupils at St. John’s dressed up in their brightest clothes for a special assembly on Harvest. They also brought in both money to do-

nate to CAFOD and food to share with the local St. John’s night shelter, demonstrating compassion to our neighbours both near and far. Ms Bonio, the school’s headteacher, explained: “As a school, we passionately support the work that CAFOD carries out. Over the past year, through three Fast Day appeals, we have raised nearly £800 and heightened the children’s awareness of the great work that CAFOD does. “Part of our school’s mission

is to show love to all and we hope that our donations can help to change the lives of others for the better. If they do, then we truly are living out our mission.” CAFOD’s representative in Horsham, Martin Brown, said: “I was delighted to visit St John’s for their Harvest Fast Day ‘Brighten Up’ assembly. All students, and a good many of the staff, had dressed up in incredibly bright clothes to mark the occasion – and what a wonderful sight it was. The children were incredibly attentive, eager and well-behaved. “St John’s have raised a huge amount over the last three Fast Days and we’re very grateful to them for their continued generosity and support.” CAFOD works with communities like those in El Salvador - a small country in Central America with a population smaller than London. With support, farmers are learning sustainable farming techniques, women are setting up small businesses and urban communities are finding ways to cope with the violence around them and to build peace. As a result, people are escaping poverty and transforming their lives, so that families have enough food and children can go to school and achieve their dreams. am Era’, researched and written by a former pupil, Ken Mansell, documents the School’s move from London to Horsham in 1902; the effect of two World Wars on the School; the major changes of the 1960s and 1970s; the period of time when the girls from Christ’s Hospital Hertford joined the boys in Horsham in 1985, and covers the 21st Century. In 1902, Christ’s Hospital moved from its six-acre site in the City of London to its new home set in 1,200 acres in the countryside just south of Horsham. The book provides some historical information about the School, going back to its founding in 1552. It also gives brief biographical details of 475 notable former pupils mainly from the Horsham era. The history of the School is also celebrated in an Exhibition at Christ’s Hospital’s Museum which focuses on the 20th Century. This exhibition explores the

art, artefacts and stories from former pupils and those connected with the School, including actors, poets and painters, reflecting the huge social, economic and cultural changes that went on in this period. There is also a notebook that belonged to Barnes Wallis. The Exhibition runs until the end of March 2018 and visitors are welcome by appointment. To order Ken Mansell’s new book, which is the third in the author’s trilogy of publications on Christ’s Hospital, following ‘Christ’s Hospital in the Victorian Era’ and ‘Christ’s Hospital Pupils 1552-1902’, or to make an appointment to visit the Exhibition, please email chmuseum@ christs-hospital.org.uk Museum Exhibits: Portrait of Sean Davis (by kind permission of the artist) Susan Parmenter b. 1954. Search for man who sexually assaulted woman on Horsham footpath On Tuesday, Sussex Police issued an appeal for witnesses to help in the search for a man who sexually assaulted a young woman on a Horsham footpath. The official report stated: The 20-year-old local woman was walking along the footpath, which runs alongside some duckponds between Depot Road and Harwood Road, Horsham, at about 7.10pm on Sunday (29 October) when she was attacked from behind by the man who forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. She struggled and the man ran off. He may have been distracted by the sound of a vehicle nearby. The victim sustained cuts and bruises in the struggle but did not need hospital treatment. The suspect is described as white and in his thirties, with rough skin and large hands. He was wearing a hooded top which

Remember, remember first aid in November

Leading first aid charity, St John Ambulance, is urging everyone to learn some basic first aid skills ahead of the Bonfire Night celebrations. St John Ambulance volunteers will be attending firework events across the region so that anyone who needs first aid gets it quickly. However, injuries are much more likely to occur at private parties, where trained volunteers won’t be on hand to help. Every year, around 1,000 people will visit A&E for treatment of a firework-related injury in the four weeks around the 5 November*. But with some basic first aid skills, everyone can be prepared to help in a firework first aid emergency. Elizabeth Harper, Regional Director at St John Ambulance,

said: “St John Ambulance is keen that people enjoy Bonfire Night but don’t end their celebrations in hospital. Fireworks and bonfires can provide fun and entertainment for families at a time of year when the evenings are rather dark and gloomy. They literally light up the sky. “Our Big First Aid Lesson is a great way for young people to learn too, it will air on 3 November and all teachers or parents need to do is go to www.sja.org.uk/bigfirstaidlesson and sign up. It’s free, interactive and a great way for children, and adults, to learn to basic first aid skills.” Firework First Aid: Burns or scalds: If someone’s got a burn or scald, move the person away from the heat and place the

burn or scald under cool running water for 10 minutes minimum. If the burn is to a child, larger than your hand, on the face, hands or feet, or is a deep burn, call 999. Remove jewellery and clothing around the area, unless stuck to the burn. Cover the burn loosely, lengthways with kitchen film to prevent infection. Don’t burst blisters. Monitor and treat for shock if necessary. Tell them to seek medical advice. Debris in the eye: If someone’s got something in their eye, tell them not to rub it, so they don’t make it worse. Pour clean water over their eye to wash out what’s in there and/or to cool the burn. If this doesn’t work, try to lift the debris out with a damp corner of a clean tissue. If this doesn’t work either, don’t touch anything that’s stuck in their eye - cover it with a clean dressing or non-fluffy material, then take or send them straight to hospital. Smoke inhalation: If someone’s inhaled smoke fumes, move them away from the smoke so they can breathe in some fresh air. Help them sit down in a comfortable position and loosen any tight clothing around their neck to help them breathe normally. If they don’t recover quickly, call 999/112 for an ambulance. For more information on St John Ambulance, including how to make a donation, volunteering opportunities, and details of training for the public, schools and businesses, visit www.sja.org.uk or call 08700 10 49 50.

In addition to Remembrance Sunday, the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) in conjunction with Horsham District Council will hold a short ceremony at the War Memorial in the Carfax in Horsham on Saturday 11 November for those who wish to remember at the ‘eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’. The programme is as follows: Music will be played from 10.30am

The War Memorial in the Carfax will be the focus of this year’s Remembrance Sunday service in Horsham at 11am on Sunday 12 November. Remembrance Sunday is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives in war. It was originally conceived as a commemoration of the war dead of the First World War but after the Second World War, the scope of the ceremony was extended to focus on the nation’s dead of both World Wars, and in 1980 it was widened once again to extend the remembrance to all who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country and all those who mourn them. The timings for the service will see the Parade arrive at Horsham’s War Memorial at approximately 10.50am on Sunday 12 November. Led by The Rev Canon Guy Bridgewater, the Vicar of Horsham, the service will begin with the hymn ‘O God Our Help in Ages Past’. This will be followed by The Last Post. The vicar will then lead the Exhortation: ‘They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.’

More giants from Warnham’s legendary pumpkin growers! Winner Julia Webb

News Martin Read - Reporter The annual Warnham pumpkin growing competition attracted another large field, yielding a spectacular crop of heavyweight

orange-gold fruits. As before, the weigh-in took place at the village’s Greets Inn in Friday Street, organiser Alan Dixon telling the District Post: “This is our fourth year and, again – for the third time – our winner is a lady grower. I buy in the plants and issue one to each of the entrants to ensure that they all start with a level field. After that I leave it up to them, they all have their own methods and techniques.” A large collection of huge pumpkins adorned the side bar of the pub, with delicious spicey pumpkin soup on offer to take away the autumn chill. And there was talk of Pumpkin Ale, very popular in the USA, where, as in Canada, pumpkin pies are also an essential component of Thanksgiving Day. In Australia and New Zealand pumpkins are prized for roasting and in Chile and South America they are a vital ingredient in soups and casseroles, and the favourite tipple of the students of the Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft is pumpkin juice. Hardly surprising, then, that pumpkin folklore and history goes back a very long way with preserved Mexican seeds dated from 5000 BC. The species is native to North America and pumpkin growing

contests are extremely serious business around the world with pedigree seeds exchanging hands for the price of a good holiday, incredibly resulting in specimens weighing over a ton. At Halloween – All Hallow’s Eve – when the departed were traditionally remembered, pumpkins are still hollowed out and carved and lit internally to ward off evil spirits. Julia Webb’s Warnham winner (the weight of a mature adult) was trundled to The Greets in a wheelbarrow, earning the champion the much-coveted cup and a meal for two at the iconic pub, one of the few traditional hostelries still surviving, landlord Duncan Entwistle saying: “We’ve had another great evening here – its been really busy. Great fun!” Local farmer Andrew Collins provided his renovated Avery platform scales from the 1930s for the weigh in, but, having been quietly confident of carrying off the prize, he said, tongue in cheek: “I’m absolutely devastated!” but, Andrew added: “I’ll be back next year and with the experience just gained I know just what I’ll have to do – deep rich compost, with plenty of food, light and water – and a bit of luck!”

Bridging the gap with public art at Wickhurst Green

An exciting new public arts programme is under way at the award-winning development,

Wickhurst Green, in Broadbridge Heath near Horsham. Designs from two renowned

artists, Will Nash and Tim Ward, have been selected by Horsham District Council and Broadbridge Heath Parish Council, as part of a public arts programme, commissioned and funded by developers Countryside. The selected designs incorporate a series of installations, entitled ‘Bridging the Gap’ for the public spaces of the new village development. The artists have worked with pupils from the local schools and members of the local community to develop themes for the art. Inspired by archaeological findings on the site and extensive work done by local village historian Jonathan England, the contemporary works of art aim to complement the heritage of their settings; a modern design at the proposed neighbourhood centre, and a landscape-led approach for the green spaces of the scheme. Jonathan England from Broad-

bridge Heath Parish Council, commented: “The Parish Council fully supports the designs and I would like to state my personal delight at the designs of the two artists and thank all those involved in managing the process. I especially like the Will’s “Tipped Stones” and Tim’s “Arches” and I think they will become iconic landmarks in the “Greater” Broadbridge Heath.” Will Nash has designed a series of sculptures made from locally sourced stone. The stone installation ‘Tipped Discs’ takes inspiration from the patterns of the prehistoric post-holes that were revealed on the site by archaeologists. A series of stones will be patterned with images reflecting themes from the workshops, and a second series will have smaller images, such as paw prints, representing the idea of remnants of a long extinct species, or a faded

photograph. Tim Ward’s design for artwork at the future Neighbourhood Centre will provide a key focal point and gathering location to the front of the building within the public square. ‘The Bridges’ forms a gateway into the new Neighbourhood Centre, a contemporary form, which holds images of the past within the inner surfaces. The piece emphasizes the crossing of the threshold, as one of the main themes of the commission. Children from Shelley Primary School and Tanbridge House School have been involved with the development of the ideas, along with people who attended the drop in session at the community hall. The educational group ‘Hands on History’ have also provided activities based around experimental archeology for the schools, based on finds from the site.

Wine Notes. California dreaming becoming a reality

OPEN EVENINGS

6.30pm Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th November A writer once unkindly said of Californian white wines: “Only termites love them”. He was referring to the creatures love of wood and the fact that too many Californian wines were over-oaked, their flavour swamped by the smokey wood taste of barrels. All that has changed, however, as a visit to the recent Californian Wines tasting at College Garden at Westminster Abbey, London, confirmed. Wine makers have reined back on the use of new oak barrels, which impart a stronger oak flavour to wines, especially Chardonnay. Nowadays the wines are a lot more subtle, with makers using older barrels that have less of an oaky taste. Yet Californians still seem to like their Chardonnay in particular a little more on the sweeter side than say white Burgundy from France. A little off-dry would be a better way of describing it. My wife, who is not a great fan of Chardonnay, loved the Californian style displayed so well at the tasting. The wines had enough acidity to give them some backbone, but that light oaking gave them a hint of sweetness. Having

said that there were plenty of fine dry styles. The name jug wines was too often attached to Californian wines 20 or so years ago. Not any more. OK there are a few around still ( and good easy drinkers they are) but wines as delicious as Mount Brave Napa Valley 2012 Merlot (£80) and the rich, smooth Inglenook Rubicon 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon ( a whopping £212 a bottle) show there is market for top notch wines and the Californians know how to make them. At more worldly levels Gallo’s MacMurray Estate Vineyards Central Coast Pinot Noir is soft but with good tannins at £17.99 while Beringers’s smooth and velvety Founders Estate Zinfandel is worth its £13.99 tag. Four grapes sounds a big mix for a Rose, but delicate Angels and Cowboys Rose 2016 from Sonoma County makes a brilliant partner for seafood and cheese from a careful blend of Grenache, Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah. Next time I will report on the surprising sparklies. California wines are not on the way up. They are there already. Phil Dennett

New Brewery Arrives In Horsham ing flavours, aromas and tastes, they’re delighted to be able to open for business selling to Horsham residents both in local pubs and from their brewery tap room located in the Redkiln industrial estate. Katharine Lee, founder and co-owner of Chapeau Brewing Company said: “we’re so excited

Village pub wins celebration of Sussex Life award

We’ve made beers that we love, with a cycling spin that reflects our own passion

Hats off to beer! Chapeau Brewing Company are launching in Horsham and bringing beers with a cycling spin to locals. Chapeau, a cycling term meaning ‘hats off to you’, comes from co-owners Katharine and Michael’s love of cycling. Having lived in the French Alps for many years, they became avid fans of Le Tour de France and watched the pros summit the 21 bends to Alpe d’Huez or the cobbles of Northern France

many a year. This inspired not only their brewery name, but also the names of their four core beers; Hard Yards (Best Bitter 4.6%), Summit (Pale Ale 4%), Slip Stream (Session Bitter 3.5%) and Open Road (Milk Stout 4.4%). Now firmly back in Sussex, Michael (an ex-chef) has made the most of his professional background to mix excellent flavours into beers that they want to drink. With many years home brewing as a hobby, hon-

to be launching our Brewery in Horsham. We’ve made beers that we love, with a cycling spin that reflects our own passion. Being able to start-up and sell our beers locally is so important to us, and we can’t wait for people to give them a try”. The business is open from Friday 3 November, when all are invited to come along, say hello, have a beer in the tap room or take some away. Bottles and draft beer will be available to buy direct and will soon also be available to buy online at www. chapeaubrewing.com.

10th November Ashington Primary School.

The atmosphere was electric at Horsham Sports Club this weekend, as the Cricket Club held their 8th annual fireworks display, which was flawlessly delivered by Aurora Fireworks. The stunning display, took place

in the grounds of the Horsham Sports Club, Cricket Field Road on Saturday 28th October. Gates opened at 4.30pm and thousands of the local community gathered together to enjoy the event on what was a surprisingly warm and

clear autumnal night. At the entrance was a fantastic fairground, powered by steam engines, courtesy of Horsham Traction Company, which was packed with some great rides and stalls for all the family to enjoy.

The field was lined with a delicious mix of tempting street food which ran throughout the night supplied by some of Horsham’s market favourites, Steak Expectations, Ginger Rookes, Soul Street Kitchen and The Pizza Oven. Together with Hog Roast, Fish and Chips, Thai, Hot Dogs, Pick n Mix, Donuts and much more meant there was something to suit all tastes. The club provided a large outdoor drinks tent and brought in extra staff to ensure that the drinks were flowing and queues kept to a minimum. The evening concluded with live music in the clubhouse with local band Saviours of Soul filling the dance floor. Chris Wassell, The Club’s Chairman enthused: “It was great to see so many of the Horsham Community at this really important fundraising event. Much needed funds were raised for both the club and St Catherine’s Hospice and I’m happy to say that due to the success of the event, we will also be donating part of the funds raised on the night to local charity Chestnut Tree House. Thank you to all who came for your support and your continued support of our community club.” St Catherine’s is a local charity with big ambition: to help people facing death and bereavement and offer expert support and care when people need it most. Chestnut Tree House is a children’s charity providing hospice care services and community support for children and young people with progressive life-shorten

Come and watch as Byrne takes this question, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out. Go on, spoil yourself. Fernhurst Choral Society as you’ve never heard it before sings jazz and swing Fernhurst Choral Society will break new ground this month when it performs a concert of jazz and swing, accompanied by the Matt Robinson Jazz Trio. The principal piece is “A Little Jazz Mass”, by contemporary choral composer and former King’s Singer Bob Chilcott. The five short movements are a jazz interpretation of the Latin Mass, which has been described as “gorgeous, soulful music in an utterly original setting” by Oxford University Press. The concert will continue with classic American songs from the first half of the 20th century. These include Cole Porter’s “Every time we say goodbye” and “Let’s Do It”; George and Ira Gershwin’s “I got rhythm” and “A foggy day in London town”; Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields’ “The way you look tonight”; Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein’s “All the things you are”; and Harold Arden and Yip Harburg’s “Over the rain-

bow” from The Wizard of Oz. Musical Director and conductor, Tim Ravalde said: “We’re really looking forward to this concert. It’s a departure from our usual repertoire and we’re enjoying getting to know something a bit different. We’re sure the audience will enjoy it too.” The concert is at 7.30pm Saturday 18 November 2017 at St Mary’s Church, Petworth. Tickets, £15.00 and £7.50 (under 14s and NUS students), are available from the FCS website: www.fernhurstchoralsociety.org.uk, Fernhurst Post Office, the Treasurer on 01428 654893, or on the door. The concert is in aid of The Hunter Centre, supporting those living with dementia. Concerts in 2018 include Mozart’s Requiem, Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb and the Verdi Requiem. The Society can be followed on Facebook (Fernhurst Choral Society) and Twitter @FernhurstChoral.

Mata Hari: Female Spy

The Great War: while millions of men struggle and fight in the

mud and hell of the trenches, one woman’s story begs to be told. Mata Hari, the most notorious female spy in history. Or was she? Using Mata Hari’s own words, performer Katharine Mary gives a powerful portrayal of a compelling woman, the world’s first femme fatale! From her upbringing in The Netherlands, to Indonesia, and the invention in Paris of her alterego, she reflects upon the events that have led her to the firing squad. Mata Hari muses, not only on her life, but also her legacy, and

this she shares with us in a direct piece of storytelling that never fails to hold interest. Katharine Mary offers us an incredibly precise performance and that precision is to be found right down to the ends of her fingertips. A feature of Robertson’s direction (he is also a solo physical performer himself) is that most of this attention to detail sinks into the piece. Performance: Saturday 25 November 8pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £16 (discount: £14), available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or online: hawth. co.uk

NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

Christ’s Hospital Choral Society Concert

CHCS are getting in fine voice to perform the ‘Petite Messe Solennelle’ on 4 November at St. Mary’s church, Horsham. New Musical Director Alex Hodgkinson has injected lots of laughter into the Thursday evening rehearsals, and apart from reaching this even higher enjoyment level, he has got the choir into excellent shape for the concert. The words, musical parts, dynamics are all coming together to produce a treat on the night. Although Gioachino Rossini wrote the fugue in 1863 for just “12 singers of three sexes: male,

female and castrati […] in all, 12 cherubim”, you might be relieved to know that it will be performed by the regular . The accompaniment was two pianos and one harmonium; all together a low number of performers, explaining the ‘petite’ in the title. Interestingly, Rossini later wrote an orchestral version which included a soprano aria – but he never heard this performed as the Pope refused permission for female singers to perform in the church. After the November concert the choir will go straight into rehearsals for their Christmas Concert on

Thursday 14 December at the Chapel, Christ’s Hospital. There will be a brilliant range of carols, both well-known and more unfamiliar, to help you into the Christmas atmosphere. But – before then, to ensure a wonderful evening of music, do come and listen to the beautiful Little Solemn Mass. Performance: Saturday 4 November at St Mary’s Church, the Causeway, Horsham at 7.30 pm. Tickets: £5 - £11. For further information, please visit www. chchoralsoc.org, or contact Esther Clark on 01403 272978.

Horsham promise only to disappoint again Saturday October 28 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 2 4 London Wayfarers Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Like Horsham, prior to this game, London Wayfarers had played 4 games and won just one, and had scored only 8 goals – the second lowest in the league (they had, though, only conceded 9). So, Wayfarers were undoubtedly a target for Horsham to get their season back on track. Yet, sadly, after Horsham’s impressive win in the first week of the season, their performances have subsided into the unfortunately regular pattern of keeping opponents out for 50 minutes only to then leak a batch of goals to lose by a distance – and that is what happened against Wayfarers. Their early short corner was batted away by Andy Isaacs in the Horsham goal before Jamie Groves responded with an attack and in end to end play Horsham were getting the ball, earning another short with Angus MacDonald denied. Sustained Wayfarers pressure got them four more set pieces, but the first half finished goal-less. Wayfarers came back out fighting, only to hit the post with Isaacs stranded, then they shot

wide before a well-worked short put them ahead. But Sam MacDonald immediately opened up Wayfarers defence to equalise. Two Horsham short corners followed, Ellis Woolley crashing home the second to give Horsham the lead. Physical Wayfarers, though, promptly scythed through Horsham’s back line to thread the ball home before blasting their seventh short into the top left corner. They then had two more short corners, the second of which was converted, giving them an unassailable 2-4 advantage. Joey Humphreys and Woolley unleashed full length runs, but it was too late, Horsham losing their fourth consecutive game to remain just above relegation territory. Horsham Hockey Chairman Nick Evans told the District Post: “Very disappointing! We got ourselves into a winning position but let Wayfarers back in. We really should be able to beat opposition like this.” On Saturday Horsham Men visit sixth-placed Bromley & Beckenham, while the Ladies 1s return to league action to take on lowly Staines at Christs Hospital (13.30). Staines have lost all four of their games to date, conceding 34 goals and failing to find the net themselves, both statistics being the worst in the league to date

Saturday October 28 – London 2 South East Horsham 47 22 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Both sides needed victory points – Horsham to get back into title-chasing contention after winning their first four games, but losing their last two, and Pulborough, who lost their first three matches but won two out of the last three anxious to pull clear of the relegation zone. A

spicey local derby was in prospect, and, initially Pulborough worried Horsham, taking an early lead, but as the second half wore on Horsham took control and ran out clear winners. It was a red letter day at Coolhurst, which saw the opening of the new state-of-the-art changing room building, Melina Greensmith (Sport England Grants Manager) cutting the ribbon with Gavin Ross – President of Sussex RFU and dignitaries from Horsham and Pulborough in attendance. The large crowd, many

fortified by a popular Vice President’s lunch, were entertained by what Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker described as: “A much improved home performance, with the set piece providing better ball.” Brad Game, though, got over the line for Boro in the second minute when he latched onto an errant Horsham pass to charge home in the corner. With Horsham Captain Tom Johnson sidelined by a serious knee injury and Boro skipper Simon Burfiend also incapacitated, both sides had players out of position, but Horsham soon reduced the deficit when Joe Wilde kicked a penalty, before scoring a try to give Horsham a temporary lead. Boro responded with a Dan Bullock try, converted by Frazer OliphantHope, to put them 8-12 ahead. In see-sawing fortunes Michael Tredgett then added a try for Horsham, kicked over by Wilde, until Oliphant-Hope’s penalty equalised for Boro. However, Horsham were asserting their authority with Nick Bell getting under the posts, Wilde adding the extras and then Declan Nwachukwu set off on a trademark burst, Wilde again kicking successfully to give the Green & Whites a 29-15 advantage at the break. Resuming, Wilde’s boot added to Horsham’s tally and worse followed for somewhat dispirited Boro when first Jonny Whiting smashed through, followed by Jake Lowe, Wilde again obliging to put Horsham 47-15 in front after another penalty. The game was up for Boro and although Oliphant-Hope converted a late opportunist Harry Bullock try, that was but scant consolation, Nick Stocker summing up with: “Our physicality made a reappearance for the first time in a couple of weeks and ultimately that proved the difference.” On Saturday Horsham – still fourth - travel to Heathfield & Waldron (9th) who, last week, were well beaten by Charlton Park, while Pulborough entertain Old Alleynians (8th). OA’s lost 36-0 to Haywards Heath, whom Boro beat at home recently. Dartfordians remain top with seven consecutive wins, while Barking, yet to better an opposition, are rooted to the basement.

Light at end of Horsham FC tunnel as new ground nears reality Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Football Club is edging towards construction of its long-awaited new home at the Horsham Golf & Fitness complex at the Hop Oast end of the Worthing Road. The club vacated its former Queen Street ground in 2008, having been there since 1904, and the last nine years have been a tortuous process of planning applications and successive ground sharing arrangements, Lancing

being the club’s latest temporary HQ. But, when the new ground opens with its state of the art clubhouse and two pitches it will have been well worth the lengthy wait. There will be the main pitch for adult matches and another, smaller one, for mini minor football. Horsham Chairman Kevin Borrett says: “It is seven months since the historic day at Horsham District Council when our application was approved. After that we have had to wait to see if there were any moves to seek a Judicial Review to challenge

the planning decision in the High Court, during which time we were unable to carry out any work.” As that period has now elapsed, the club are able to move forward to satisfy the ecological conditions of the planning consent, the first part of which is to trap and relocate any great crested newts found on site, Horsham CEO John Lines telling the District Post: “Now that we have obtained a licence from Natural England, a specialist ecological company is currently working on the newt project, which should be resolved

by the middle of November.” Kevin Borrett continued: “There are many more conditions to satisfy, but if all goes to schedule we are expecting to proceed to a financial completion with Reside, our development partners at the Holbrook Club.” The construction of houses on part of the Holbrook Club will provide the funding for Horsham Football Club’s new home, for which a shortlist of contractors have submitted detailed quotations and the club will soon be

entering into contracts with their favoured partner, with the expressed aim of being ready for football by September 2018. The new ground will provide much needed facilities for young footballers and a social venue for the local community, Kevin Borrett summing up with: “These are exciting times at Horsham Football Club and the continued following of supporters is welcomed and highly valued by all of the Board and Committee.”

Horsham happy to share points in defensive tussle Saturday October 28 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 0 0 South Park Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter A goal-less draw may not sound terribly inspiring but in the end both sides were relatively happy to share the points, courtesy of tight defending at both ends. Horsham have notched up five points from their last three league outings and although South Park have been letting in goals of late, they are eight places above Horsham in the table and have scored 29 times themselves, a tally bettered by only two out of

the other 23 sides in the league. The first real shot of substance came from the Hornets when Dean Bown collected a George Landais pass but was unable to fulfil. Both goalkeepers were then in action – Callum Thomas for the Sparks negating a long range Hakeem Adelakun effort before Brannon Daly – in his first outing for the Hornets – gathered off the post to keep Kieran Lavery at bay. Charlie Farmer then headed wide for the Hornets, neither side securing an advantage at the break. Soon after the restart the Hornets unsuccessfully appealed for a penalty, but few opportunities were being created, although Daly was called upon to clear an ambi-

tious attempt from outside the area. Another prospective penalty for the Hornets came and went when the referee waved play on after substitute Toby House was floored, following which Horsham pressed for a decider, but Farmer’s shot was parried away. Then, with the visiting keeper looking vulnerable, House found the top of the crossbar, but Landais was unable to crash in the rebound and his subsequent header was off target in the Hornet’s first goalless draw since they entertained Guernsey at Gorings Mead in January. Horsham Manager Dom Di Paola, though, was pleased enough to settle for a clean sheet all round.

YMCA stun league leaders in memorable win

Horsham progress in dynamic second half bounce back Tuesday October 31 – The Velocity Trophy Round 2 Walton Casuals 1 3 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham battled through to the third round of the Velocity Trophy – the League Cup – with an impressive second half display, winning at a canter after being a goal down. This was their second visit to the new state-of-the-art Elmbridge Sports Hub – in September the Hornets drew 1-1 in the league in the first ever match there. Coming into this game, Walton were 10 places above Horsham in the table, so this was a creditable win for the Hornets in a hard fought, competitive match. In end to end play both sides had goal scoring opportunities but Steve Metcalf saw his shot blocked by Stags’ keeper Denzel Gerrar before Michael Hunter in the Hornets’ goal negated a Stags attempt. Then the keepers were in action again when Gerrar pushed out Jack Hartley’s shot and Hunter snuffed out Alex Kelly’s drive. The Stags then fired wide, followed by Alex Duncan clearing off the Hornets’ line. The Stags, though, were not having everything entirely their own way – a George Landais curler just

evaded the goal, but Duncan had to thwart another Stags foray, neither side having an advantage at the break. Horsham’s secure defence had been a feature of the first half, but it was found wanting soon after the re-start when Joe Shelley’s back pass was latched onto, enabling the Stags to go one up. The Hornets responded positively, only for Landais to head just wide, but they equalised shortly afterwards when, after the same player had a goal disallowed - offside, a good build up put Toby House clear and he made no mistake. Horsham were now in the ascendance, a Landais volley was safely gathered but the Hornets went ahead when substitute Dean Bown’s shot passed the Stags’ keeper. Then, with just eight minutes left, the Hornets twisted the knife, Steve Metcalf crashing in from a corner. Horsham’s win earns them a third round tie versus Dulwich Hamlet at a date to be confirmed. On Saturday Horsham travel across Kent to play Faversham Town (20th – two places below the Hornets), then on Tuesday (November 7), in another league match, they visit 16th placed Chipstead, against whom Horsham lost 1-2 at Lancing in September.

YMCA trim Wick Tuesday October 28 Sussex Royal Ulster Rifles Charity Cup – Round 3 Horsham YMCA 3 0 Wick Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Saturday October 28 Macron Store Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 1 0 Haywards Heath Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter It was Comedy Night at the Gorings Mead Clubhouse last Saturday, and it was YM who were laughing at the end of a game when they had turned over the league leaders, who had probably anticipated grabbing all three points. YM’s defence kept Heath at bay, goalkeeper Aaron Jeal having an outstanding game. Post match

YM Manager Peter Buckley said: “We’ve turned the corner – to get a clean sheet win against Haywards Heath is a great achievement – they’ve been in terrific form, and, as last season, are very difficult opponents for YM, so the players knew that they had to be at their very best. Our recent games have all been against top of the table clubs - we got an away draw at Chichester City and then beat Saltdean United, Eastbourne Town and now Haywards Heath.” After their erratic start to the season, YM’s good run moves them up to 10th in the table, exactly half way. Heath have a good defensive record and successfully negated YM’s forays in a first half in which Heath themselves

were denied from finalising their own goal scoring opportunities, neither side netting up to the break. The game continued in similar vein after the re-start and the deadlock was not broken until the 75th minute, when ever-dependable Phil Johnson got through to find the net from close range in a rare YM strike. Heath responded positively but YM successfully closed the game down, holding their nerve in the tense final minutes. Heath’s assessment was: “This was a frustrating day for us – we were punished by a single goal and thwarted by the inspired host keeper – our Man of the Match. Not a good day for us, but well done to YM: thank you for your hospitality and best of luck for the rest of the season.” YM’s attention now switches to Sussex Royal Ulster Rifles Charity Cup action with a Third Round tie against Wick at Gorings Mead. Wick were relegated from the SCFL Premiership last season, but, currently second in Division 1, are hoping to go back up at the first attempt. The YM First Team are eager to emulate the high-flying YM U21’s recent result when they beat their Wick counterparts 3-0 at Crabtree Park.

YM hustled through to the Quarter Final of the RUR Cup – having already secured a similar berth in the Peter Bentley competition. Wick, though, provided spirited opposition: they were relegated from the SCFL Premiership last year but, now second in Division 1, they have scored 44 goals and conceded just 11, so were worthy opponents, keeping YM on their toes. With Dave Brown and Charlie Cooke injured and Luke Donaldson cup tied there were enforced changes, but, once again the YM defence came up trumps, consistently negating Wick attacks. Wick, though had an early opportunity, but ballooned the ball over, then YM had corners at each side before Sam Schaaf fired at Wick keeper Keelan Belcher. With YM creating pressure a goal was inevitable, and it came in the 10th minute when Phil Johnson scored from close range. Next, a YM free kick found the arms of Keelan, followed by a Sam Schaaf side footer headed over for another corner, but the score remained 1-0 at the break. On resumption a Johnson strike just eluded the goal and the same player blazed over after a great Tom Frankland run. But Johnson

made amends with a pinpoint cross for Frankland to slide into the goal with a defender in attendance. Wick chances were now few and far between, but Aaron Jeal was called upon to catch a pile-driver. At the other end a YM cross went unfulfilled and a corner was gathered but propelled straight at the keeper, and Schaaf unleashed consecutive volleys ahead of a rare Wick corner. But, with the visitors committed in the home goalmouth, YM immediately broke away, Schaaf completing an outstanding goal to put YM 3-0 ahead and the result beyond all doubt, not that it had ever seriously been in question. Two more YM corners followed, but, despite practising set piece training routines, conversion has dried up. Post match YM Manager Peter Buckley paid tribute to Wick – who have won the RUR Cup three times – saying: “Considering Wick’s goal scoring record we knew that we’d have to be well organised and we were, despite having players out of position.” On Saturday YM visit the Dockers (Newhaven) – ninth, one place above YM in the league, before a tough game against Bostik League South leaders Lewes in the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup at the Dripping Pan on Wednesday (November 8), Peter Buckley adding: “The last time we went there we beat them 4-1, but they’re a good side, riding high, so we’ll need to be on our mettle again.”
