Many people dream of being able to play a musical instrument, but the opportunity is not always there – until now! Horsham based charity Music for ALL have guitars to donate to a deserving young person or adult, MfA Chief Executive Paul McManus – an established musician – telling the District Post: “I know how much a guitar has changed my life and I’d love to give others the same chance that I was lucky enough to have, to enable them to experience the joy of music making!” MfA are supported by the music industry and dedicated to helping as many people as possible, of all age groups and social backgrounds, to get involved in the amazing world of music making, an essential part of the fabric of our lives. In some cases the charity can even help with tuition fees. Jools Holland is a patron of MfA, saying: “I am

delighted to help Music for All to inspire more people to participate in music making, either for the first time or to return to playing after having lapsed – have a go!” Music making breaks down cultural barriers and provides a welcome balance to busy lives, improving wellbeing and promoting self expression. The charity was formed in 1996 and is run by and linked to some of the biggest names in the musical instrument industry. It is affiliated with the Music Industries Association - also based in Horsham’s Barttelot Road - which represents leading companies, including Yamaha, Roland, and Fender, in addition to music shops. Paul continues: “We provide many different types of instruments for individuals, groups and community projects and are always happy to accept any instruments no longer needed so that we can pass them on to worthy causes nationwide. Apart from guitars we’ve provided violins, keyboards and even a harp and the feedback received is truly heart-warming.

“Blast”from the past!

WW2 Bomb discovered at Broadbridge Heath donated for display at the Wings Museum News Daniel Hunt - Wings Museum A World War Two German Luftwaffe SD500kg (1000lb) bomb was discovered by a plant operator who was carrying out shallow excavations on a development site near Broadbridge Heath West Sussex last month. The SD500kg was discovered at a depth of 1.5m in a ‘nose down’ orientation. A UXO Engineer from Fellows International based in Gosport was on hand to identify the item and confirm it was free from explosives. The Fellows Engineer adopted a calm and experienced approach, offering initial safety advice to site management. Without the professionalism and experience of the Fellows UXO Engineer, the bomb would have been assumed to be dangerous and the site evacuated causing

massive disruption to the local area. The emergency services and military bomb disposal teams were not required due to the swift and accurate identification of the inert bomb. The construction site where the casing was found was the former Joint Service Explosive Ordnance Disposal School (JSEOD) that had closed in the early 1960’s. This is where Bomb Disposal Teams of the Royal Engineers were trained after the war. It is likely that the bomb casing had been a UXB that had been de-fuzed and made safe during WW2 and kept for training purposes and buried on site for students to practice bomb disposal techniques. The SD500kg was semi-armour piercing bomb designed for use against re-enforced structures and ships and was used througout the Blitz on London. The bomb casing has recently

been rehomed to be put on public display at the Wings Museum near Balcombe West Sussex. The bomb is now being prepared ready for display when the museum re-opens for the 2018 season in March. Wings Museum are interested tio hear from anyone who may have memorabilia associated with the Broadbridge Heath Bomb Disposal School, the Blitz and World War 2 in general. The first official sponsor of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 is to be Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens in Lower Beeding, West Sussex. Leonardslee Gardens is set to reopen in March 2018, and is expected to become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the district. The alliance between Leonardslee and the Year of Culture 2019 will continue across the entire

year, with events set to take place at the site, encompassing music, entertainment and food and drink events. The celebratory launch of the Year of Culture on New Year’s Eve 2018 will be hosted at the Gardens. As the project’s sponsor, Horsham District Council is coordinating the Year of Culture, working closely with advisors representing arts and heritage throughout the community.

BilliFest 2017 sets new records!

More than ever, Billingshurst families and friends in the area turned out in force The High Street was closed to traffic from 6am to 6pm and more than 40 gazebos were erected by dawn. The Christmas tree, electrical supplies and tables and chairs were brought in by the Billingshurst Community Partnership’s organizing committee as the sun rose, and the aroma of the hog roast filled the morning air as stallholders set up for the 10am opening. The event offered everything from cheeses to Christmas wreathes, and from hand-made pottery to cuddly toys and craft beers. The Scouts & Guides were

there too, as were a number of churches and charities. Ken Johnson, Chair of the Billingshurst Community Partnership’s BilliFest organising committee, said: “More than ever, Billingshurst families and friends in the area turned out in force, for our biggest community event at this festive time of year. Some 250 children visited Santa and his elves after the 9-year old winner of the BilliFest Poster Painting Competition opened the event to the sound of St. Mary’s bells.

Thousands enjoy Horsham’s first mediaeval market Thousands of shoppers and visitors flocked to Horsham’s historic centre at the weekend to experience the town’s first medieval Christmas markets. Roving mediaeval knights and jesters roamed the festive clad market stalls, where suitably attired stall holders entered into the spirit of the weekend as they sold an enticing assortment of crafts, festive foods, mulled mead and medieval fayre. On Saturday there were belly dancing performances from the Sultan Siren’s throughout the day. Carols on the bandstand organised by Age UK also added to the festive feel. The Christmas celebration also coincided with the nationally celebrated Small Business Saturday, encouraging the public to “shop small” and support local independent traders. Additionally, Young Enterprise, a national business competition for schools was also welcomed to the event. Four companies from Collyer’s College and Millais in Horsham and two schools from the Worthing area made a great start to their trading experience by selling £1000s worth of product to local shoppers. On Sunday, visitors enjoyed wandering minstrel performances throughout the day and further carols on the bandstand performed by Horsham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society. The ever popular Christmas Cracker Charity Market organised by The Rotary Club of Horsham returned to the amphitheatre along with hugely popular Santa’s

big red steam bus rides around the town centre, provided by the Horsham Traction Company. An ancient stocks photo booth also provided a mediaeval background canvas for those wishing to have their photos taken to mark the day. Much admired and visited was an open air exhibition of bespoke banners depicting Horsham’s medieval history. These were produced by Horsham Museum and Horsham District Council. The Christmas Medieval Market was organised by Horsham District Council in conjunction with Loxwood Joust and Horsham Markets operators Food Rocks.

Tiger Tiger: Opportunity to meet campaigner and photographer at Horsham Museum

For over two hundred years tigers and Sussex have had a connection. From the one time Felpham resident, William Blake, who immortalised it in the now famous

line ‘tyger tyger burning bright’, to Winnie the Pooh, resident of Ashdown Forest whose friend ‘Tigger’ was first illustrated in the 1928 A A Milne classic and later given comic creation by

Walt Disney as Tigger bounced on his tail. Today that connection continues as a West Sussex resident, Michael Vickers, has been campaigning to save

the tiger by capturing images of these magnificent inspirational animals. His photographs can be seen in the new temporary exhibition ‘Tiger Tiger’ at Horsham Museum’s small photographic gallery. “In 2000, after having read an article in a magazine regarding a safari to India, my wife Annie and I travelled to the tiger reserve ‘Bandhavgarh’, where we saw our first wild tiger” Said Michael, “I have been fortunate enough to visit several Indian national parks, enabling me now to recognize a small number of ‘tiger’ families”. The exhibition at Horsham District Council’s Museum & Art Gallery is an opportunity to see not only fantastic wildlife photography, but also to look closely at these animals whose playful and hunting nature is mimicked by the domestic moggy (possibly one of the many reasons why people’s hearts are captured by these wild creatures). The Museum is delighted to offer Michael space to exhibit. In addition to creating a superb exhibition Michael explained: “I am donating all net profits from the sale of my photographs to

the charity ‘Tiger Awareness’ – a small registered UK charity based in Leicester and founded by Philip Davis. Philip, like myself, is totally dedicated to saving wild tiger populations and in this connection he works tirelessly at ground level - both in the UK and India”. A second special recruitment event has been organised to encourage more people to start working in care. The first event took place on 22 November at Horsham Library and a second, soon to be held at Horsham Jobcentre

The events are part of a major initiative to recruit more care workers in West Sussex, by giving people the opportunity to find out why working in care is so rewarding, meet local care providers and even apply for jobs. West Sussex care worker, Zipporah, found a new job after attending a previous event: “I’ve worked with young

people all my life and this was my first time working with the elderly. It’s still fantastic! “Caring is about compassion, empathy and kindness. At the end of the day you feel fulfilled, because you know that something got done and you helped someone achieve something. There’s nothing more satisfying than that.” The county council has been working with independent providers of care and support at home, extra care housing and residential care providers in the county on initiatives to increase the recruitment and retention of care professionals. Chance to win luxury hamper worth £75 and help raise funds for local charity

Kingsfold based builders merchant D.W. Nye will be helping to raise funds on behalf of Horsham charity Born Free with their fun, Christmas inspired competition ‘Guess how many sweets are hidden inside the Gingerbread House’. The baked masonry masterpiece, which was constructed by Horsham resident Kat Giannini – partner of D.W. Nye’s managing director Rex Nye - comes complete with its very own gingerbread pick-up truck filled to the brim with sweets. It took

4.5 hours to bake and a further day to decorate, before being transported to its final home as the centrepiece of D.W. Nye’s Christmas decorations at its depot on Dorking Road. Local residents are invited to visit the depot, between now and Friday 22 December, to guess the total number of sweets hidden inside the gingerbread house and its accompanying truck. There will be a suggested donation of £1 per entry, which will go to the Born Free charity, with no limit on the number of entries

per person. The entrant with the best estimate will win a Luscious Hamper, courtesy of Cocoa Loco at Swan Walk. The delicious contents include an array of scrummy handmade chocolates worth £75. Kat commented on her creation: “Building my gingerbread grand design was certainly a labour of love, but unlike conventional building, I was in a nice warm kitchen rather than shivering away in the cold outdoors. Thankfully I didn’t encounter any delays and required only one piece of protective equipment - a pair of oven gloves! “I am really pleased with the final result. I hope everyone else loves it as much as I do and has a go at guessing and helping to raise money for a worthy cause. Farlington turns purple for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month On 16 November, Staff at Farlington School wore 50 shades of purple and bought purple cakes in support of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month to highlight the importance of early diagnosis. The Senior School staff room turned purple, the attendees of the morning’s Governors’ Marketing Committee meeting dressed up, purple cakes were made by the talented Jane from Harrison Catering and there was a bear cuter than Paddington. The ‘Wear Purple Day’ has been organised by Sue Cooper, Farlington’s Head of Textiles,

every year since her brother, Adrian Bunting, died from pancreatic cancer, aged 47. Sue explained: “He wasn’t diagnosed as having cancer by his doctor, but only when he went to A&E. There, he was told he had only four to five weeks to live. Sadly, this is true for many. Pancreatic cancer is hard to diagnose and the only hope for any treatment is early diagnosis.” This year, sadly, the school is commemorating the loss of “much-missed” Catering Manager, Mark Bell. Mark was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and fought bravely to fight the

Youth Cabinet launches videos to help explain extremism A series of animated films have been launched to show how young people can get help if they are feeling pressurised into extremist behaviour. Produced by the West Sussex Youth Cabinet members alongside West Sussex County Council, the videos focus on three topics which they agreed were most relevant to people of their age online gaming, animal rights, and family & faith. The Youth Cabinet, a group of 11 to 19-year-olds elected to represent the views of young people, started looking at radicalisation and extremism as it was felt there was not enough material available aimed at their age group. Stephen Hillier, County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “The Youth Cabinet is such an impressive group of individuals. I know a lot of adults who don’t truly understand radicalisation or extremism. “With these videos, the Youth Cabinet has managed to give easy-to-understand, relevant examples of how people could fall victim to radicalisation. Many people relate the word ‘radicalisation’ with religion but it can relate to all extreme views such as political and social. “But these videos are not just about explaining radicalisation, they also show how easy it is to get help and in a number of different ways. I would recommend these videos to everyone as it can be all too easy to feel helpless – you are never alone.” A range of focus groups took

place ahead of the videos being produced to narrow down the types of extremism and the important key messages needed in the videos. The Youth Cabinet then helped to create all three storylines, write the script, develop the storyboard and decide the style of the videos. Youth Cabinet Member Kelly Balmer, 17, from Worthing, said: “This video will help young people understand radicalisation and how to recognise and prevent it if it will ever occur, to themselves

Merger ‘beyond expectations’ Having completed the integration of both firms, the recent merger of DMH Stallard and Rawlison Butler is being hailed a great success by the senior management team. Christmas is coming – the season to be jolly, merry and happy all at the same time. But everyone has to keep control of the finances, especially over the festive season. UK shoppers set to spend more this Christmas (2017) compared to last year

British consumers are expected to put Brexit uncertainty aside this Christmas and increase their spending over last year, a survey suggests. British families will spend an average £821.25 on gifts, food and drink and decorations, up 1.3 per cent on last year and 54 per cent more than the European average of £532, according to figures from VoucherCodes and the Centre for Retail Research (CRR). Adults will spend an average £244 each on gifts, up 1.3 per

cent on last year and 51.5 per cent more than the European average of £160.82. Keeping tabs on the spending and making sure you know exactly what you have available to spend isn’t always easy – whether its business or personal, but don’t worry the following tips should help: Check your balance and order statements to keep tabs on your spending –ATMs will provide a balance 24 hours a day. Make use of telephone & online banking services provided free by your bank. This helps with paying bills, transferring money and checking your transaction details. Think about the best way to pay for the goods you are buying. A debit card allows you to make payments over a cheque card limit, but the money will be taken from your account sooner than a cheque. If you need to borrow money you should work out how much you can afford to repay, making sure you have spare cash left to meet any unexpected expenses and bills. If you need an overdraft always speak to your bank manager first. An arranged overdraft is

cheaper than an unarranged one and may avoid embarrassment and additional costs if you do not have enough cash to meet your payments. Sometimes you have more money in your current account than you need. Think about putting some money aside for next Christmas, using a savings account. You can transfer money into and out of it as and when you need it. Over the seasonal period, check with your bank when direct debits and standing orders are due to be paid. The dates may vary from your normal payment day and you don’t want to be caught out and find you have no money in the bank over Christmas. Increase your cash withdrawal limit over Christmas – this will allow you to withdraw funds when the bank is shut. Alternatively, you could use your debit card to obtain a cashback at supermarkets. Credit cards are a convenient way to shop over Christmas. But don’t get carried away with the spirit of giving lots of presents, if you know you will have difficulty repaying any sums you spend. Pack more into Christmas with a personal loan. You will be able

to budget every month because you will have a pre arranged monthly repayment schedule to follow. That way you know exactly what you will have left over every month. Christmas is a time to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends; you don’t want to be worrying about your bank balance in January, so keep tabs on everything you do spend! Remember that for all financial or business problems – Prevention is better than cure. Entertainment Phil Dennett The financial future of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra is assured for the rest of this season and next season, fans heard at Sunday’s excellent Dome concert. The John Carewe Brighton Orchestra Trust has given the orchestra a grant of £65,000 and conductor Barry Wordsworth told the biggest audience of the season: “This wonderful donation will mean that the rest of the season is safe and next season is safe.” The orchestra has reported severe financial challenges in the past and it seemed the orchestra was in celebratory mood as it tackled every one of the three pieces with great confidence and sparkle. The orchestra, in which Caroline Harrison played beautiful solo viola, certainly glowed throughout its star turn, the Symphony Number 2 by Sergei Rachmaninov. The musicians took full advantage of the composer’s all-encompassing scoring to show off its considerable talents. The strings captured the glorious sweep of Rachmanivov’s melodies, as well as the more inward looking aspects of the music. Brass and violins showed plenty of energy in the first movement, while some lovely clarinet and

oboe illuminated the lyricism of the attractive second movement. Woodwind wafted some embracing melody in an often dashing third movement, with some silky strings adorning the main theme. After its shattering opening the ravishing Ravel Piano Concerto in G major offered a gorgeous adagio assai, with soloist Melvyn Tan rippling gently on the keys while a beguiling Cor Anglais played beautifully by Clare Hoskins floated above. This seductive movement also contained some enticing clarinet, flute and oboe. Tan was fully extended by the often-jazzy score, chopping chords with urgency and energy as the conflicting demands of a deceptively complex concerto kept everyone on their toes. Tan simply seemed to be relishing the beautiful noise around him as he stamped his own personality on the music. The trombones, who played a major part all afternoon, helped the sprightly opening of the Elgar overture In the South (Alassio), while the strings sung out the sunshine of Italy and the whole orchestra captured the richness of a richly endowed piece that had a little of everything for the music lover.

Teenagers donate dog walkers’ bench to animal charity in Sussex

A group of 11 young people have donated a special dog walkers’ bench to the RSPCA. The group of 16 to 17-yearolds who are taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS), from Horsham and mid-Sussex, decorated a bench with colourful paint and paw prints to donate to the RSPCA South Godstone Animal Centre. This was part of the group’s social action project. The teenagers decided to support the animal welfare charity after head of education David Allen gave them a talk on the RSPCA and the five

animal welfare needs earlier in the summer. Rose Abram, NCS project officer said: “They really enjoyed the talk from the RSPCA as they are a group of animal lovers. It really inspired them to decide to support the charity and they came up with the idea of a bench when they saw an old, disused bench in Horsham Park. As many are dog walkers themselves, they wanted to make an enjoyable and functional space for dog walkers to rest and socialise. “They decorated the bench to represent the five needs of

animals which they learnt in the session and they decorated it with footprints from lots of different animals.” The group pitched ideas and decided on how to fund their project by hosting a dragon’s den style activity before going ahead with the project. On Sunday (November 12) teenagers and staff from the NCS group visited South Godstone to deliver the bench and present it to the animal centre. They were also given a tour by centre manager Darren Parish. David Allen, head of educa-

tion at the RSPCA, said: “We very much support the role of NCS in helping to build young people’s confidence and help raise awareness of social issues. It is so important that young people are exposed to the issues charities face, whether human or animal, and to show them how they can help to make a difference. “We were delighted they chose to support the RSPCA and it was brilliant to meet the group on Sunday. They had such a good time and have agreed to come back to the centre early next year to varnish, fix-up and improve

the benches and picnic tables on site at South Godstone. This is the second group which has supported the centre with their volunteering initiatives and have really helped RSPCA South Godstone and the many animals the centre cares for.” The bench has now been placed on site as a welcome respite for volunteer dog walkers and guests. Travelling somewhere new “If you’re escaping the madness and treating yourself to a Christmas getaway, or perhaps you are driving home for the festive season and taking your pooch with you, it’s important to bear in mind a few tips and tricks to make sure they are calm and happy. “If you are travelling in a car make sure your canine companion is safe and secure by using a harness, fixed crate or a partition in the back. You will also need to monitor the temperature, don’t let the car get too hot or too cold, and never leave them in the car alone. To ensure a stress free journey allow your dog to become familiar with the car beforehand, let them have a sniff around and even put a blanket in there with a familiar

scent if needed. Keep calm it’s Christmas “Christmas can be a busy time in many households and this can be overwhelming for some dogs, from excited children running around, friends and families visiting to carol singers knocking at the door. If your dog does experience anxiety in situations like this try to keep them as calm and relaxed as possible by creating a cosy area for them away from the fuss with some of their favourite toys and blankets. You could also give them something tasty to chew on that will keep them occupied when you have guests over. Time for presents “It isn’t Christmas without presents under the tree, so don’t forget to hide something exciting for your dog to find on Christmas morning, they are a member of

the family after all. Treat them to a new toy, their favourite healthy treat or even something that will benefit you which they will enjoy, such as a brain training game to keep them occupied when they are home alone. Doggy dinners “We all know one of the best parts of the festive season is the delicious foods; however what you enjoy indulging in may not be the same for your pooch. It can sometimes be hard to resist your furry friend when they are staring up at you at the dinner table, but you should always think before feeding them any leftover turkey or mince pies. Get moving on Boxing Day “Feeling a bit sluggish after all that Christmas indulgence? Then why not get up off the sofa and go for a Boxing Day walk with your

canine companion. Not only can you get outside and enjoy so some fresh winter air and burn off some of those mince pies, but this will also keep you dog active and their joints fit and healthy. Seeing the New Year in with a bang “New Year’s Eve is a cause for celebration all over the country, with lots of fireworks being set off to mark the occasion. Whilst these are beautiful to look at and enjoyed by most, the loud noises can cause anxiety in many dogs. If your furry friend isn’t a fan of fireworks and they appear distressed and/ or nervous there are a number of things you could try. Why not try muffling the noise with a TV or a radio, distracting them during the noise or even create them a small, well insulated doggy den.”

Horsham robbed of two points at the death

Saturday December 2 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 2 2 Spencer Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Prior to this match Spencer were fifth, six places ahead of Horsham, yet Horsham showed that they are capable of beating upper table teams, but they were thwarted by a very late opposition equaliser. Andy Issacs in the Horsham goal was called upon just after the game got underway but a breakaway Horsham attack saw Barney Knights Johnson cross, Horsham, though, were unable to score. Then, Spencer had a short corner, which Ollie Carr-Hill flicked into the top right of the goal to take the lead. Four minutes later a back handed strike from another set piece almost put the visitors further ahead, but Angus Donaldson soon drew Horsham level with a strong shot from a short. And, it got better when Freddie Campbell’s long range supply was latched onto by Sean Pearcy for him to skirt the Spencer keeper and back hand the ball into the net. Spencer’s third short corner was then batted away by Isaacs, followed

by an immediate Horsham attack, the half finishing with Horsham 2-1 ahead. On the resumption a Richard Blakesley intercept and free kick and a Joey Humphreys foray worried Spencer, who then responded by hitting the post and seeing double rebound strikes repelled. Horsham were holding onto the ball better, but fired an attack just wide. Short corners followed at either end, before Greg Drake converted another to enable Spencer to snatch a galling draw right at the death, leaving Horsham Captain Isaacs with a rueful smile as he told the District Post: “We had our full squad out this week, which hasn’t often been the case this season, and we played well again. With so many new players replacing our experienced departures, it takes time to recreate a team, but we’re getting there. But, we’ll need a good January if we’re to pull clear of the relegation zone. Ahead of that we’ve got a tough assignment on Saturday when we’re away to leaders Oxford Hawks.” Spencer’s assessment of the game was: “We put ourselves into gaol, but then we got ourselves out of it!” Henley remain bottom, with three points, two less than Horsham.

Dublin, Ireland was the destination for an award winning group of Baton Twirlers from Horsham. 15 members of The Horsham Bluebelles travelled to Ireland to compete in a 3 day International Baton Twirling Association competition. work and extra practises paid off, returning home with over 50 solo trophies and medals and 8 1st places in their teams. Hannah Jones also won the Top Twirler sash in her age group and the senior pom pom won overall best performance. Horsham notch up another good win Saturday December 2 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 2 0 Reading 2s Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In their last home game before Christmas and after three draws and an unbeaten run stretching back almost two months, Horsham completed an assured clean sheet win with a goal in each half. Before the break Sam Stares converted a short corner. Then in the second half Louisa Denman continued her goal scoring activities, putting the game beyond doubt with Horsham’s second goal, again from a short corner. The happy Horsham Captain, goalkeeper Hannah Simpson, told the District Post:

“This was a really good all round performance with everyone working hard for each other. Reading were keen but we kept them under pressure and didn’t allow them to play. Our new Coach, Chris Bowen, has settled in really well and we’re enjoying our hockey and are playing well together, but we’ve got a tough away game at Surbiton on Saturday. Surbiton are runaway leaders, recently beating Epsom 10-1. Horsham are fourth, just three points behind secondplaced Basingstoke, while hapless Staines are anchored to the foot of the table. After the Surbiton game the ladies have one more fixture ahead of their prolonged Christmas and New Year break, but, as in previous years, they will be playing an indoor competition in the interim.

On 19 November, over 300 children, along with their supporters, visited Christ’s Hospital for a Minis Rugby Festival organised by the School’s Director of Rugby, Ian Davies. The Festival attracted 10 different clubs, from Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire, and was a chance for the clubs to experience Christ’s Hospital’s fabulous grounds. The 300 boys and girls demonstrated some fantastic rugby skills in near perfect conditions, in terms of both weather and playing surfaces. There were three separate levels of competition, seeing the

under 9s, and under 10s ‘A’ and ‘B’ strands playing a combined total of over 70 matches over the course of the morning. At the close of the Festival, all players were presented with a souvenir gift of their visit to the School and, organisers hope, left with some lasting impressions. One of the visiting coaches summed up the day from his and the team’s point of view: “Thank you Christ’s Hospital for hosting an excellent minis rugby festival last weekend. Our Under 9 and Under 10 boys and girls were extremely excited to be

playing on the immaculate pitches on which Joe Launchbury once marauded. This combined with the spectacular surrounds and the rare opportunity for the Surrey clubs to play teams from Sussex and Hampshire ensured for an especially memorable morning of rugby. Ian Davies and his cheerful band of staff and senior pupils created an atmosphere which prompted healthy and harmonious competition in an event which proved to be an excellent advert for the benefits of the new rules of play.” (Rorie Whybro, Farnham RFC)

Early goal scuppers Hornets’ Kentish foray Saturday December 2 – Bostik Football League South Division Phoenix Sports 1 0 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham did not enjoy their trip to Kent, their four match unbeaten league run ending in the narrowest of defeats in their first ever league contest with Phoenix Sports, who returned to winning ways after four defeats from their last six encounters. The game was over almost before it had started when an early attack earned the hosts a corner, which Danny Young headed home, putting Phoenix ahead after just three minutes. Horsham replied, but Charlie Farmer’s push was safely gathered by Steve Phil-

lips in the Phoenix goal. Phoenix, though, promptly challenged again, but Hornets’ keeper Brannon Daly negated Christie Pattisson’s effort before Kweku Ansah shot wide. Scott Kirkwood then attempted to level the score with a speculative long range shot, but was off target. A second goal for Phoenix beckoned when Jeff Duah-Kessie had a golden opportunity only to squander the chance, as did Gil Carvalho, Daly preventing him from scoring. Just ahead of half time Horsham might have equalised, but Alex Duncan’s onrush was cleared for an unfulfilled corner, leaving Phoenix one up at the break. After the resumption, Kirkwood tested Phillips with a distant volley, the keeper winning that skirmish, but the Hornets were pressing for parity and Dar-

ren Boswell tried his luck, without success. The woodwork then came to Horsham’s rescue as Tony Robinson was denied. After Boswell threatened, a double strike by Ansah was kept out by a diving Daly save. Amid far too robust, but unsanctioned Phoenix tactics, Toby House came on as a Hornets’ sub but was unable to take advantage of Jack Hartley’s supply. With the clock running down Pattisson might have put the game totally beyond Horsham’s reach but, although his shot was wayward, it mattered not as the single early goal of the match proved sufficient to give Phoenix all three points. surprise loss at Loxwood had ended an unbeaten nine match run. But, the game started with an Uckfield attack cleared off the goal-line and two Aaron Jeal saves. YM responded only to see their attempt thwarted and the game continued in similar vein with both defences in action, but with Uckfield looking lively, for a time there seemed to be more of their blue shirts than the

white of YM and, at each end, the linesmen’s flags were signalling series of offsides, negating many forays. But, YM had a corner and then a wasted opportunity before a breakaway Uckfield run induced a brilliant diving save from Jeal, who then punched away the resultant corner. Sam Schaaf scored, but it was ruled offside, ahead of an Uckfield corner, the first half ending goal-less. Restarting, Jeal kept Uckfield at bay, another corner going unfulfilled. YM, though, also created chances, hitting the post from the left, followed by Luke Donaldson blazing over. YM now piled on the pressure and a goal looked certain – it duly arrived in the 57th minute when Sam Schaaf fired in from close range. This motivated Uckfield to respond and they skimmed the bar and then shot wide. Mark Cave was also off target for YM and Uckfield were doing their best to equalise, testing Jeal with a strike that went just over the bar and a further shot. Neither side were prepared to concede, YM responding from the right, pin ball play eventually being cleared for a free kick and they successfully closed the game down in the face of a late Uckfield push. Talking to the District Post, YM Manager Peter Buckley said: “This was an ugly game and I felt that we should have wrapped it up earlier with more goals. Uckfield came for a point and meant business – Callum Donaghey lost at least one tooth! This was a gritty team win, but if I had to name a Man of the Match it would be Sam Schaaf for his unstinting effort.” On Saturday YM, now sixth, are at Gorings Mead again - against fourth-placed Pagham – to whom they lost 4-0 at Nyetimber Lane in August. Hornets ease through in the Sussex Senior Cup Hornets ease through in the Sussex Senior Cup Tuesday December 5 – Sussex Senior Cup Round 3 Horsham 4 2 Littlehampton Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham got through to the next round of the Sussex Senior Cup without too much difficulty, the difference in status between the two sides being more and more evident as the game wore on (Littlehampton, the Marigolds, are currently bottom of the Sussex County Football Premier League – the tier below Horsham, where they have conceded 43 goals, the worst record of any of the contenders). Littlehampton gave away a free kick almost from the off when Liam MacDevitt was floored. The ball was fired into the wall and cleared, but the Hornets did not have long to wait before they were on the score sheet, Josh Street firing home in the sixth minute. Horsham’s lead might have been surrendered immediately, but, with the defence caught napping, Littlehampton’s Lee Garnham was denied by the woodwork. Then, Steve Metcalf had the opportunity to put Horsham further ahead, only to shoot wide from a free kick. Horsham, though, did go two up in the 14th minute when Toby House converted a corner

at the second attempt. And, it might have got even worse for the Marigolds when the same player almost induced the visitors to donate an own goal. But, Littlehampton did reduce the deficit when Lucas Pattenden stole through after 25 minutes before House was unable to fulfil an opportunity and Street fired over. Resuming after the break 2-1 to the good, the Hornets tested Littlehampton but Metcalf’s distant blast was pushed over by keeper Luke Hutchings for an unfulfilled corner. With Horsham now having much more of the ball, Charlie Farmer and House were both thwarted – House twice. However, House was rewarded when his sustained pressure enabled him to complete MacDevitt’s supply in the 73rd minute. Two substitutes were then in action, Horsham’s Dean Bown beating Mitchell Bromage in the Marigold’s goal to put the hosts 4-1 ahead. Bown then surged through, but was off target, until, at the very death, Harry Heath gave Littlehampton a measure of consolation when he got past Brannon Daly in the Horsham goal.On Saturday the Hornets remain at Lancing, when they have a league fixture against East Grinstead, who are flirting with the relegation zone. Then on Tuesday (12th), again in the league at their temporary home, Horsham play present runners up Corinthian Casuals.

Horsham Joggers were getting all seasonal on the south coast this weekend as the ladies took part in the Christmas Crackers 5&10K in Worthing. The day got off to a flyer with Val Purnell finishing 1st in the 5K in 22.08 with Judy Brucker and Amanda Avery also completing in 32.35 and 39.37. In the 10K event Lorraine Treadwell lead the contingent home in 4th in 47.04 followed by Emma Catlow 48.23 Viv Underhill 56.05 Fiona Clifton 60.32 Steph Charman 61.05

It was also the last Sussex Grand Prix of the year at Crowborough over a tough 10K course which included crossing a small river!
