East Street businesses prepare for Christmas celebrations News Martin Read - Sports Reporter

The eating experience in Horsham’s East Street is surely as good as anywhere in the UK with outstanding world food in a warm and friendly atmosphere, a real credit to the town, and this year Wabi, the award winning Japanese restaurant and cocktail lounge is getting together with near neighbours Beeches Buffet, Carmela and the Mapp & Weston Barista Bar to stage a festive Christmas event for the district’s children.

It will be on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 21st, 22nd and 23rd to celebrate Christmas in aid of an exceptionally good cause – The Dame Vera Lynn Trust. The children’s charity is dedicated to supporting families with children under 5 years old with cerebral palsy and motor-learning difficulties.

The charity was created to give these very special children a place where they can learn and thrive in a warm, supportive setting that understands their unique journey. The Trust’s early intervention service and support network enables them to work alongside families to give their very young

children the best possible start in life so that they can realise their full potential. And, the Trust’s 12 Days of Christmas Campaign is to generate funding to provide additional resources and equipment to use in sessions with their parents. The District Post is pleased to sponsor the event, which will be set up at around mid day and get underway from 1pm - until 3 each day (when East Street opens for vehicular access).

Horsham District Council has announced the following Christmas and New Year arrangements for rubbish and recycling collections: Additional collections of the blue-top recycling bins have been organised to help residents cope with the extra Christmas packaging. These will take place between Wednesday 27 December and Friday 5 January inclusive. Collections of the brown-top garden waste bins that are normally due within these dates are suspended, resuming again from Tuesday 9 January.

Collections will be delayed by one day on the week commencing Monday 25 December. The collection crews will be working on Saturday 30 December in order to catch up. Normal collection days resume week commencing Monday 1 January.

All collections will be back to normal from Tuesday 9 January 2018.

Residents are reminded to return their bins to their property as soon as possible after collection to avoid blocking pavements or other public areas.

For full information, residents are asked to refer to their personalised collection calendar on the Horsham District Council website (www.horsham.gov.uk/ bins/bin_calendars) where there is also a new facility to subscribe for the calendar to be emailed to residents. Just follow the instructions once the calendar has been downloaded. Calendars are also

available upon request by telephoning 01403 733144.

HWRS (Household Waste Recycling Sites) opening times: Horsham (Hop Oast) and Billingshurst HWRS managed by West Sussex County Council will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Wrapping paper: Foil or plastic wrapper cannot be recycled. Please remove any sellotape, ribbon or bows from paper wrapping paper before placing it in the blue-top recycling bin.

Christmas cards and tags: Cards and tags can be placed in your blue-top bin for recycling.

Please remove any strings or ribbons.

Plastic pots, tubs and trays: Don’t forget that plastic pots tubs and trays can now be recycled. This includes sweet tubs, biscuit trays and even the plastic inserts of advent calendars! Just make sure it is all separated and clean and dry.

Christmas Trees: Artificial trees cannot be recycled however they can be disposed of at the local tip. Real Christmas trees can also be disposed of at the tip or be cut into pieces and placed in the brown-top garden waste bin.

Please ensure all your recycling is kept clean, dry and loose this festive season. Additional recycling or rubbish that is not contained within your bin cannot be taken.

Canon Guy Bridgewater and St Mary’s Parish Church, on the Causeway in Horsham, hosted the Collyer’s annual Christmas Concert.

The packed congregation enjoyed a wonderful evening of festive music and readings by students and staff.

The evening began with Canon Guy Bridgewater’s welcome and prayer, followed by rousing performances of ‘Joy to the World’ and ‘Ding Dong Merrily on High’.

After a reading by Megan Chalmers (Luke: 1-7 – The Birth of Jesus), the congregation also enjoyed a piano solo of Chopin’s ‘Fantaisie – Impromptu’ by Vila Zhang and sang ‘Deck the Halls’.

Angus Sheldon then read The Shepherds and Angels (Luke 2: 8-20) and the choir, headed by Israel Harding, performed ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Silent Night’.

The congregation then joined in for ‘We Three Kings of Orient Are’’ and were treated to a reading by Becca Inglis-Taylor (Mathew 2: 1-12 – Visitors from the East).

The Vocal Quartet, comprising Israel Harding, Bessie Griffiths, Amelia Smith and Caitlin Lyster, performed ‘Seal Lullaby’, followed by Harpist Jacqueline Lo’s ‘Variations sur un theme dans le style ancien’.

As the evening drew to a close, Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley, gave a reading of John Betjeman’s ‘Christmas’; the congregation were then invited to sing ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’.

The Blessing was then read by Canon Guy Bridgewater, a governor at Collyer’s.

Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley, said: “I was immensely

proud of the students’ performances. We are so lucky to have such talented young people at Collyer’s! The Christmas concert is a Collyer’s tradition not to be missed, so huge thanks to Canon Guy Bridgewater, governor at Collyer’s, for allowing us to hold it at St Mary’s again this year.”

The Collyer’s choir, who performed wonderfully, featured Bass: Nick Hoad; Sopranos: Caitlin Lyster, Bessie Griffiths, Amelia Smith, Becca Inglis-Taylor, Pauline Wang; Sophie Ansell, Ingrid Tiba, Izzy Baines and Cherry Lam. Altos comprised Heather Vinall, Rachel Parnell, Catherine Overend; Jazmin Demjan, Isabel Harris and Lydia McCleery. Tenors were: Israel Harding, Sulaimaan Azoor, Morton Woodburn and Alexander Newton.

Other stars on the night included Head of Music, Dan Page, Head of Extra-Curricular Music Stephen Brundish, and Performing Arts Technician Marcus Bell.

Technical Support students were James Stanton, Will Stewart, Danni Hemsley, Aiden Shaw; Joe Graham, James Monk and Charlie Stephenson-Coggan.

Collyer’s Linda MacLeman, Hannah Roberts and the RCU (Collyer’s student council) also worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the event possible.

Deputy Principal, Steve Nicholls was thrilled: “Simply brilliant! I’ve enjoyed these concerts since the mid-1980’s and this was certainly up there with the best. These gifted performers have produced another superb Collyer’s concert. ‘Tis the season to be Colly!”

Six West Sussex men wanted by police - now five

A number of West Sussex men, wanted on recall to prison, have been named by Sussex Police.

Darion Bates, 49, of South Holmes Road, Horsham, was arrested and charged on Friday, (December 1). He pleaded guilty to all offences and released on conditional bail until he appears before Brighton’s Magistrates’ court on December 21 for sentencing.

The 16 offences spanned from August, 23 until November, 26 and among the items stolen were sat navs and an iPod. Anyone who has been a victim of a vehicle crime in the Horsham area and not yet reported it, we encourage you to do so online or by calling 101 quoting operation Blackout.

Kane Wilson, 26, was jailed for theft and having breached the terms of his licence was recalled on November 24. He has links to Crawley and Brighton. 1165 of 24/11.

Barry Allen, 48, from Worthing, was recalled on November 23, having originally been jailed for GBH. Enquiries are also being made in Sheffield. Serial 1160 of 23/11 refers.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of any of these men, or who has information about them, is asked to report online or call 101 quoting the individual reference numbers shown above.

Appeal for help in Horsham woman rape investigation

Sussex Police are seeking witnesses after a Horsham woman reported being raped following a night out with friends in Crawley.

The report released on 8 December is as follows: The 18-year-old victim found herself in a field in unknown surroundings during the early hours of Saturday (2nd December) and ran to nearby properties in a distressed state, banging on doors and screaming but getting no response.

She was eventually offered a lift by a motorist who stopped at a filling station before driving her home.

The woman had gone out at around 10pm on Friday, 1st December and met up with friends at the Old Punch Bowl public house in High Street, Crawley, before moving on to the Moka nightclub in Station Way, Crawley.

The victim lost her passport and bag, which was later returned to an old address that was written in her

passport.

Detective Sergeant Mike Butler, from the safeguarding team, said: “This is an isolated incident and we are still trying to piece together the movements of the woman once she left the nightclub and to establish the exact location where she woke up in a field.

“Anyone who recalls hearing screaming and banging on doors at around 5am on Saturday, or who may have other information, is asked to get in touch. In particular, we’d like to hear from the car driver who offered the victim a lift and from anyone who found the victim’s bag and passport, or finds a pair of discarded knee-length boots in the Crawley area.”

Young entrepreneurs choose Horsham to trade their goods On Saturday 2 December, amidst the busy stalls and activities of the Christmas and Mediaeval Market in Horsham Town Centre, young entrepreneurs from local schools were also showcasing their company’s wares.

Four small, but very enthusiastic, companies from Collyer’s College and Millais school in Horsham and two schools from the Worthing area made a great start to their trading lives by selling £1000s worth of products to local shoppers. Indeed, both Horsham firms took nearly £900 between them and made a great impression with customers and judges alike.

Local business owner, Sharon Walker of Cakes by Sharon Walker, gave some excellent business advice to the students, but ultimately she was there to judge the best trade stand, which carried a cash prize of £50.

The winners of the Best Trade Stand award were Millais school.

Their company, called simply ‘Gift Box’ sold out of its selection of scented gift candles and sold many of their gift boxes filled with recipe cards for tasty treats.

The second place went to Collyer’s College, a company called Mantra (Apparel UK), which has

been mentored by local businessman, Dominic Wakefield from Wakefield’s Jewellers.

The support had clearly rubbed off, as their display of leather magnetic wristbands, with personalised inscriptions, helped the college students sell many items.

Leigh Chambers, Economic Development Officer at Horsham District Council and a local board member of the Young Enterprise organisation, organised the Trade Fair: “Having been involved in Young Enterprise Trade Fairs for five years now, I can safely say this has been the most successful yet and the business skills of our local students seem to get better each year.

“Young Enterprise, which has been running in the UK for over 50 years, is a programme of business education and mentoring run for Year 10 and 12 students from local schools and is supported by a board of local volunteers in the Horsham, Crawley and Mid Sussex areas.

RSPCA launch charity single ‘Stars’ to mark the start of Christmas countdown

The RSPCA has thrown its hat into the ring for the Christmas number one, as up and coming Sussex singer, Lucy Ellie, covers the Simply Red hit song - Stars - in aid of the animal welfare charity.

The song is the soundtrack to the charity’s Kindness at Christmas video that has gone viral with over 2 million views.

The tear-jerking tale tells the story of Woody the Christmas toy pup who is thrown out with the rubbish before being rescued and taken in for care by the RSPCA. Proceeds from the single are being donated to the RSPCA to help

Lucy Ellie Cooper, who is from Haywards Heath and who works at the charity, said: “This was a lovely opportunity for me to combine my two loves - animals and music. Outside of my job at the RSPCA I am a country music singer and songwriter, so when the chance came up to record such a fantastic and well-known song for the charity’s Christmas video, I jumped at it. I really hope people will take Woody’s story into their

hearts and support the RSPCA this winter.”

The RSPCA is braced for nearly 2,000 calls a day, this festive season, as it launches its Kindness at Christmas Appeal to help care for abused, neglected and sick animals.

During December last year and January (2017), 13,265 incidents were reported to the RSPCA in the South East, including 1,1192 in West Sussex and 1,305 in East Sussex.

New figures from the animal welfare charity show that during the same period (Dec 2016/Jan 2017), the charity received 118,799 calls nationwide - 1,916 calls a day. (79.8 calls an hour, 1.3 calls a minute.)

Towers Juniors Take Part in a Charity Reindeer Run The Juniors at Towers Convent School took part in a reindeer run to raise money for Chestnut Tree House, a local charity which provides care, support and fun for children, who are terminally ill.

The juniors all dressed up in antlers and flashing noses to run a mile around the tennis courts.

The children collected stamps on a reindeer picture

to count their laps: To cover a mile, 11 laps were required. Father Christmas made a surprise appearance, very kindly taking time off from his Christmas preparations to visit The Towers!

Pupils and staff were equally impressed with the event. A school representative explained: “Everyone had great fun and we raised £700.50 for Chestnut Tree House.”

Horsham School of Dance at Capitol Panto Once again, students from Horsham School of Dance have been successful in auditioning for local pantomimes.

Abigail Wheatley and Lauren Bidlake will appear at Dorking and Crawley respectively, and pictured are five more students who will all be performing in Jack and the Beanstalk at the Capitol in Horsham. A representative explained their success: “Our students take RAD Ballet along with ISTD tap and modern classes, which gives them an excellent all round training. We have 100% pass rate for exams and all of our students get to perform at The Capitol every other year, in our own spectacular shows, so they’re really at home on stage!”

For Lili Harding it’s her first panto and she’s loving rehearsals so far: “I love the dances we’re

learning, especially the really jazzy one, it’s so fun to do!” Sisters Abbie and Olivia Judd have both performed in local pantomimes before. Abbie says she loves performing on stage and she can’t wait to meet the rest of the cast. Olivia is looking forward to making new friends, and loves seeing the audience have such a great time.

Rotary Charity Christmas Market raises £600 for local families Horsham Rotary Club’s annual Christmas Charity Market raised £600 towards Horsham Rotary’s Christmas giving to the needier families of the town and it’s immediate surrounds.

The market played ‘home’ to a number of local charities, including St Catherine’s Hospice; Chestnut Tree House; Macmillan who raised £368 on the day; Age-UK Horsham; West Sussex Mediation Services; Horsham’s Repair Café; Friends Reaching Out - transforming the lives of orphaned children; Neil’s Club - a place for people with young onset dementia; Cats Protection among others.

Horsham Citizen’s Advice Bureau used the event to remind the community of the valuable services that they offer from their premises near Horsham Library.

Les & Dee Searle’s magnificent Steam Bus offered a circular tour of Horsham Town, which attracted queues all day from UK nationals and several overseas visitors, including a notable family from

Norway, who were amazed to see ‘such a wonderful example of steam engineering’.

Horsham Rotary will be collecting more funds in the lead up to Christmas and invite all to “say ‘Hi’ and drop a coin or two in our collecting boxes” when they and Santa visit Newbridge Nurseries, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and The Carfax. Santa will also be operating house to house collections, on various routes around Horsham and Southwater, on the evenings of 11-14 and 18 December between 6pm and 8pm.

Horsham Be Active event is a hit with the over 45s

Some 30 local people enjoyed the opportunity to take part in a “Be Active” come and try it style event at Horsham District Bowls

Club in Broadbridge Heath on Friday 24 November.

Attendees were greeted by a broad range of different activity options at the event, catering for all levels of fitness, which gave people the chance to try out sports and activities, in a bid to get, and stay, active, whilst socialising with new people.

The event was organised jointly

by Horsham District Council and Horsham Indoor Bowls Club.

Indoor bowling itself is a target based sport and was one of a number of target based sports on offer to try. Others included: sjoelen, boccia, target wedge, golf chipping, table skittles, shuffle ball, quoits and new age kurling.

For those seeking more fitness based endeavours, there were stepping machines, hand cycling devices and an exercise bike.

One local resident took the opportunity to take out her frustration on the boxing punch bag that was also available.

Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Jonathan Chowen, visited the event to witness all the action and was enticed to have a go at fencing. A member

of the visiting Horsham Rusty Brains group, who hadn’t fenced for a number years, also accepted the fencing challenge.

Balance boards and a trampet were available to practise coordination, a jenga set provided a more cerebral option and table tennis also proved popular.

After the trial event there was a keen interest amongst participants to sign up for future regular events.

The council’s Health and Wellbeing team were on hand to answer and advise on any health related issues and provide free health MOTs. Sports Development coaches from Horsham District Council were there to provide some of the equipment and supervise certain specialist activities.

Cllr Chowen commented: “This event was such a major success. It was great to see the collaborative work between the council and Horsham Indoor Bowls Club in action, helping to get more people of all ages more active.

Glenleigh Park Teacher Makes a Special Visit to Drusillas

A former member of Drusillas Park’s Junior Board of Directors returned to the zoo, for the first time in years, on Friday 17 November.

Natasha Sims, now a teacher at Glenleigh Park School in Bexhill, brought her Year 1 class along for a very special visit.

Originally set up in 1989, the Drusillas Junior Board of Directors was a scheme established to give children a chance to say what they would like to see at the Park.

Children aged between 9 and 12-years-old were recruited to the Board, and asked to offer their advice and ideas to the Directors

and Management Team at Drusillas Park.

Alongside her twin sister, Gabrielle, Natasha Sims joined the panel of mini-Directors in 2003, when she was just 9-years-old.

After earning her place amongst 12 other Board members, Natasha served Drusillas in her advisory role for a commendable three and a half years.

James Woodward, Head of Education at Drusillas, said: “It was really lovely to see Natasha again, although it was slightly alarming to see her as a fully-fledged adult - I’m not sure where the years have gone! It was so wonderful to

hear that she enjoyed her time at Drusillas so much that she wanted to return all these years later with her Year 1 class.

“During her time on the Board, Natasha was involved in rating the Park and its attractions and making suggestions for its improvement, as well as helping with a number of fundraising and conservation projects.

“Natasha brought her mum along with her to Drusillas on Friday; it was lovely to be able to reminisce about the old times! It was really nice to hear that they have kept all of the press cuttings from their time on the Junior Board.”

The Board was disbanded in 2007, after the decision was made to increase the involvement of local schools at Drusillas, which would give a larger number of children the chance to share their ideas on what they would like to see at the Park.

Drusillas’ Director and Head of Marketing, Cassie Poland, said: “We get lots of ideas from children attending schools nearby now, which is great! We love to hear what they have to say; a child’s perspective is fascinating – they just think of things adults would never come up with!

“It was really special to see Natasha back at the zoo after all this time. There were certainly smiles all round from her Year 1 class, as they explored the zoo and learnt all about the animals living here at Drusillas. We hope to see Natasha back at the Park again in the future; we will always be pleased to see her!”

Stay safe on snowy roads this festive season

white Christmas, your wishes could become reality this festive season. With experts predicting a particularly chilly winter

ahead – possibly the coldest we’ve seen for five years – bookies have slashed the odds of snow on Christmas Day to 2/1, according to a recent report.

“Snow and ice will be a much higher threat this winter and could affect London, with a higher-than-normal potential for temperatures below -10C further north,” says AccuWeather senior meteorologist, Alan Reppert.

It won’t come as a surprise to most that accident numbers peak during winter time, which is why careful driving and a bit of preparation is crucial. With a reputation firmly rooted in driver safety, local Volvo dealer [name of dealership] is quick to stress the importance of preparing your car for the sudden drop in temperature.

Rachel Law, at Doves Horsham advised: “Getting up 10 minutes

earlier to get your car checked and ready can help reduce the likelihood of accidents in wintry weather.

“Aside from your normal car servicing schedule, there are a few straightforward driving and maintenance tips we’d always recommend. They’re simple but often easily forgotten.”

The recommendations are: 1. Make sure your windscreen washer fluid is topped up before you leave the house, and add a de-icer solution once the winter weather kicks in.

2. Keep your windscreen clean inside and out, and check it for chips or cracks. Have your windscreen replaced if necessary.

3. It’s easy to take your wiper blades for granted. Check yours are clean and clear of dirt or debris.

4. Clear any snow, ice and

condensation from all windows.

Never drive away until you have a clear view.

5. Check your tyre tread is above the legal minimum and make sure all your lights are fully functional.

6. Watch your speed and allow extra time for your journey, whether you’re heading out on a long journey or simply popping to the shops.

7. Keep your distance. When roads are slippery, it can take up to 10 times longer to stop.

8. Pack an emergency kit of warm clothing and other winter breakdown essentials such as a reflective jacket, blanket, torch and phone charger.

9. Don’t drive around with your fuel tank almost empty. Keep the tank at least a quarter full to allow for getting held up in traffic in bad weather.

5 Tips to Boost your Immune System Our immune system is quite complex, protecting us from potential bugs and viruses to keep us healthy.

Try taking a course of Echinacea and/or probiotics. Echinacea is a flower which has immune properties and you will find it in any good health food store. If possible, use it in tincture form as it will help it get into your system faster than tablets. In addition, our gut is closely associated with our immune system and a course of probiotics can also provide additional support to both our digestion and immunity.

Get outside and enjoy the sunshine! If possible you should expose your skin to the sun for 15 minutes a day as this will help your body produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D plays an important part in maintaining a healthy immune system and if getting out in the sun isn’t possible, it would be worth considering a Vitamin D supplement.

A Wild Success for Knepp Wildland at Construction company lights The Beautiful South Tourism Awards up charity for Christmas

Knepp Wildland Camping and Safaris confess to being ‘wildly excited’ to have won the ‘Gold Award for Best Tour of the Year’ and ‘Silver Award for Best Glamping Business of the Year’ at The Beautiful South Tourism Awards last week.

Held at The Grand in Brighton and hosted by TV and radio celebrity Toby Anstis, the awards celebrate the very best tourism businesses in the region.

For Penny Green, Knepp Wildland’s Safari Manager, receiving top accolade for guided wildlife safaris in this pioneering rewilding project in West Sussex is not just about the quality of service, although that was singled out

for praise. It’s about the whole experience of rewilding and people’s rising interest in wildlife: “All sorts of people come on our safaris; Whether they’re experienced birders or really don’t know much about the countryside, we’re offering something that is really hard to find these days - a real connection with nature. It may be hearing a nightingale or watching fighting stags or seeing a family of piglets rootling for earthworms – there’s that touch of magic, and I think that’s what really moves and inspires people.”

Situated 8 miles south of Horsham, the 3,500-acre Knepp Wildland began its adventure in ‘rewilding’ fifteen years ago. Unlike

most nature reserves, at Knepp, nature is allowed to take the driving seat. Free-ranging herds of animals roam the landscape at will, trampling, rootling and disturbing the soil and vegetation, creating opportunities for other wildlife.

The results have been spectacular.

Knepp is now a breeding hot-spot for some of our rarest species, like the turtle dove and spectacular purple emperor butterfly. All five UK owls are now found at Knepp, and 13 out of the UK’s 17 species of bats.

Staying overnight in the heart of the rewilding project is also a revelation, according to Rachel Knott, Campsite Manager at Knepp Wildland Safaris, who proudly scooped the Silver for Best Glamping Business of the Year.

“It’s about comfort, of course,” said Rachel, “And being ecofriendly and stylish and welcoming.

All that, we can provide. But it’s what our wildlife adds to the mix that makes us really special – hearing owls hooting at night, having your coffee in the morning and suddenly a stoat catches a rabbit right in front of you. It feels wild – and that’s what brings people back to us again and again.”

By Eve Delves The organisers of the Horsham Garden Music Festival have announced that the event will return in July 2018 in The Human Nature Garden, Horsham Park, for the seventh consecutive year.

The dates are July 14, 15, 21 and 22 and, while the theme for each concert is still under wraps at the time of going to press, we can reveal that the very popular ‘Rock Day’ will feature.

The festival broke all previous records in 2017, as during the first two days more people than ever before flocked through the gates and danced to a Musical Medley and Jazz, Swing & Blues

themed weekend. Sadly, the sun didn’t shine on weekend two, which featured music from the ‘80s and the aforementioned Rock Day, but the pouring rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and hundreds came and danced despite the soggy conditions.

Horsham Garden Music Festival was set up in 2012 by Paul Bellringer and is a non-profit making organisation, with the sole purpose of staging a series of annual music events in the Human Nature Garden, providing a platform for local amateur and semi-professional singers and bands. The festival, which is run solely by volunteers, is also proud to be diverse, inclusive and family friendly.

Work begins at Amblehurst Green

A house- building firm, has started work on a new development of homes which will become part of a landmark new community in Billingshurst.

Bellway is building 110 new

homes on its portion of Amblehurst Green, a development of 475 new homes which is being built on land off East Street.

The development will feature a range of one to five-bedroom

homes once complete, as well as a new primary school, a doctors’ surgery, a dentists’ surgery and a creche.

Technical Director for Bellway South London, Ian Curry, said Amblehurst Green would become a fantastic new community. He stated: “It’s exciting to see the first phases of construction underway at Amblehurst Green and we’re looking forward to being able to welcome home-hunters to the site next year.

“We’ve designed this development to provide a home which will appeal to everyone, from first-time buyers looking to stay in the area, to families looking to upsize and downsizers as well.

“This will become a landmark development within Billingshurst, and we’re very proud to be part of the group driving this forward. As well as new homes, this development will also pro-

2017 ‘has been a positive year for sales and lettings markets’

As 2017 draws to a close, national estate agents Leaders has described it as a busy and positive year for both the sales and lettings markets.

and there are plenty of reasons for optimism ahead of the new year.

She was speaking after the National Association of Estate Agents revealed figures that showed the number of sales agreed per branch peaked in February and June at 11, compared with 2016 when March provided a high point with 10.

In addition, the Association of Residential Letting Agents reported the average number of properties available to rent per branch was 188 in the first 10 months of 2017, up from 180 in 2016.

Allison explains: “While the property market has undoubtedly faced challenges in 2017, there is ample evidence to support our own findings that it remains in a position of strength.

“Demand for properties both to buy and to rent is incredibly high, with 425 buyers registered per estate agent branch compared with 380 last year. With demand so great, sellers and landlords have enjoyed regular rises in house

prices and rental values, making selling or letting an increasingly attractive prospect.

“The rental market is performing extremely well, with more properties coming to the market and being secured by tenants quicker than ever before. Our own figures show it took us just 4.6 viewings to let a property this year, compared with the industry average of six.

“2017 has been an interesting year with demand continuing to outweigh supply and rents rising, which we expect to continue in 2018, helping landlords to enjoy a great return from the buy-to-let market.

“2017 has shown people are still keen to move and this, combined with a lack of supply, will keep prices high in both the sales and lettings markets.”

Volunteering Opportunities Building Heroes based in Pulborough is a charity which retrains military veterans for a career in the building trades. They rely on fundraising activities to fulfil their vital role in helping ex-service personnel into employment and need enthusiastic, friendly and reliable people to support and increase their activities and to raise the profile of the charity in the local area. If you can help organise fundraising events (e.g. sponsored walk, swim, bake sale, coffee mornings, etc, liase with community groups who may hold fundraising events for them, make phone calls to potential supporters, offer support at existing events (e.g. handing out flyers, providing information, serving drinks) or various other support tasks they would love to hear from you.

Are you passionate about your community and want to make a difference? Emerging Futures train individuals to work as part of a coaching team to support their local community. Family recovery coaches help individuals in a family develop their own wellbeing and support system and to make valued life choices. And recovery coaches support individuals to move in to the community from structured treatment, detox, residential rehabilitation and prison.

Pulborough and District Community Care Association needs a Wednesday club volunteer to help with activities at its social club for older people, for example short mat bowls, games, bingo, and the occasional outing - all accompanied by tea and cake. The association also needs a telephonist to work from home to take appointments for its Community Transport Service.

Carers Support West Sussex needs support group co-facilitators to help provide a confidential space for carers to meet, offload and gain information. They also need telephone support volunteers to help carers share emotions and reduce stress and isolation by providing active listening. And the charity seeks young adult carer engagement volunteers to meet and communicate regularly with young adult carers to support them.

Horsham edged out late in the game Saturday December 9 – London 2 South East Dover 33 28 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Dover succeeded in their first two matches of the season but, coming into this game, had not won since then, a walkover apart, and Horsham were three places above them in the table.

But, because of non-availability Horsham were obliged to field an inexperienced side for which they ultimately paid the price, despite leading Dover until the last segment of the game in east Kent. Mike Watts got over the line for Horsham in the 6th minute and, although that was not converted, Jordan Smith added another try, successfully maximised by Joe Wilde, whose subsequent penalty enabled Horsham to go into the break 15-14 to the good.

Soon after the resumption Wilde kicked another penalty before Watts scored two unconverted tries to give Horsham a 28-14 advantage, but just when victory seemed to be beckoning, two converted tries were conceded, levelling the score - before Dover added another try to snatch the game. Disappointed Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “We couldn’t quite close the game down, but we performed well considering the contingent that we had at our disposal and I was particularly

pleased to see how impressively our very young replacements played.” Dover RFC’s Crabble Athletic Ground is historic for another sport – cricket. Creation of the ground at the end of the 19th century was a costly engineering achievement, carving a level field from the hillside, and county cricket began there in 1907. The county week continued, only interrupted by the war years, until the 106th and final game in 1976. Four John Player League games were played there, and, up to the late 1980s, county 2nd XI matches. During its time as a county cricket venue 92 centuries were compiled at the Crabble and the ground was graced by great players, including Hutton, Trueman, Compton, Edrich, Sobers and Kent legends Wright, Evans, Knott and Underwood. Colin Cowdrey did well, describing the Crabble as one of his favourite grounds.

Deterioration in the wicket brought an end to county cricket and the subsequent demise of Dover Cricket Club, one time winners of the Kent League, led to conversion of the ground for rugby. The complex is also home to Dover Football Club.

Back with rugby, on Saturday Horsham, still fourth, one of three clubs bunched on 36 points, return home to Welcome Old Alleynians (8th) – OAs suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of all-conquering runaway leaders Dartfordians last Saturday.

Disappoining second half undermines Boro

This was a game that Pulborough had hoped to win - against fellow strugglers Deal & Betteshanger, the prize for Boro being elevation from the relegation zone, but it was not to be, Boro beginning well only to fade in the second half.

Coming into this game at the half way point of the season the two sides had identical results, both winning three times from ten starts with seven losses.

Deal & Betteshanger were 10th

with 16 points and Pulborough 11th with 15, but whereas on the field Boro’s point scoring record was better (206 compared with Deal’s 176), the east Kent side had conceded 238 as against Boro’s 448. With much to play for, Harry Short scored two first half tries, one converted by full back Frazer Oliphant-Hope to give Horsham a 12-0 lead at the break after they had successfully prevented Deal from scoring. Boro Team Manager Henry Game told the District Post: “We travelled well, were in good spirits and got off to a great start with two good tries, but in the second half Dover showed greater energy and desire, putting 29 points past us before we got a very late consolation try.” On Saturday, in their last game of

2017, Boro are on the road again, but with the far shorter journey to current runners up Hove. After beating Heathfield & Waldron last Saturday, Hove, with 42 points, are nine behind rampant leaders Dartfordians - who have won all 11 of their games to date.

Hove beat Boro at Freelands early season, Henry Game saying: “We gave a good account of ourselves against Hove at home in September, staying in touch with them for much of the game. We’ll need to take our strongest team there and play really well.” Barking are cemented in at the bottom of the table without a win and minus 10 points following two forfeitures, Boro remain 11th, with six points fewer than Deal & Betteshanger.

HDCF gears up to improve cycling across the district

Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham District Cycle Forum (HDCF) is a pressure group seeking improved arrangements for cycling across our area in all its forms and at their recent meeting in County Hall North ongoing matters were discussed and an update provided.

In relation to the north of Horsham development, Horsham District Council submitted a competitive bid for support and succeeded in obtaining a grant for 15 days of specialist consultancy on

the necessary cycling and walking infrastructure in the district, Ruth Fletcher commenting: “This is just a kick start of the project – not a solution.” To help formulate their cycle strategy West Sussex County Council have crowd sourced a wish list for the district covering some 300 routes and, initially, a Horsham town centre contraflow system is under discussion, the aim being to achieve safe cycling around the town centre and beyond, including the surrounds, without dismounting. As a result of HDCF pressure, the Horsham town centre vision includes a cycling strategy and a network of safe cycling and walking

is sought across the town, mostly incorporating inexpensive options, but requiring a measure of funding.

Ideally, the plan is to incorporate the vision within the WSCC strategy, but there is some opposition to allowing cycling in the town centre. HDC want to encourage more tourism into the whole of the district and Thea Bredie-Turnbull emphasised that cycling has a role to play in the achievement of that aim and various ideas were mentioned, including the possibility of having bicycles for rent at Horsham station for use on guided routes, perhaps along forgotten cycleways connecting up with the Downs

Horsham’s 2019 Year of Culture will also provide an incentive to encourage cyclists to participate in events like the successful Shelley Ride, which visited and celebrated the poet’s many local connections. The Christ’s Hospital ‘missing link’ was also reported on, funding having been obtained to connect the Guildford section of the former railway line with the southern segment via a sealed off road route. A separate proposal to move the present public cycling arrangements within the grounds of CH School will be the subject of a public enquiry, at which HDCF will be objecting.In Horsham, the Kings

Road will be resurfaced to eradicate the present unevenness and the provision of a wider, safer cycle path is under consideration. And, the lack of provision for cyclists in the proposed new Piries Place car park was also highlighted, together with restrictions in the Boulevard area near Tanbridge House School.

Finally, the Horsham Wheels for All project was outlined, when, during half term week next May, it is planned to hold a “Celebrate Cycling Event” to promote cycling on adapted machines designed to enable disabled riders to enjoy a special ride, perhaps to Warnham Nature Reserve. The award winning Wheels for Wellbeing Charity supports disabled people of all ages to help keep them fit and independent and provides cycling facilities for groups using the adapted machines at Broadbridge Heath on spring and summer Fridays. The government is promoting cycling as a healthy, pollution free means of transport and HDCF is committed to seeking the much needed improvements in the district’s arrangements. Hornets sting the Wasps in the tail Saturday December 9 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 1 1 East Grinstead Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Prior to this game East Grinstead were 22nd – one spot above the relegation zone, and five places below Horsham, but only the Hornet’s late goal enabled them to salvage a much-needed point.

And, it was East Grinstead – the Wasps – who created the early chances, but Brannon Daly in the Horsham goal safely gathered Jordy Mongoy’s inadequate attempt, before Wasps’ skipper Steve Springett was denied by Steve Metcalf and former Hornet Ollie Gill was unable to get past Daly. Horsham, though, had a golden opportunity when

they were awarded a penalty when Liam MacDevitt went down in the area, but Scott Kirkwood’s spot kick was correctly anticipated by Dan Smith in the Wasps’ goal. The Hornets might have made immediate amends when Joe Shelley put Metcalf through, but the shot went wide. Then, with Horsham possession increasing, Alex Duncan’s cross was cleared by CJ WilliamsAgunabor before the Wasps responded - Charlie Postance’s strike being negated by an impressive Daly dive ahead of Oshaye GiraudHutchinson firing wide for the first half to remain goal-less.

Horsham re-started with greater intent in search of an elusive goal – Duncan and, subsequently, MacDevitt and House all orchestrated attacks before an offside intervention. These missed chances were

put into perspective when, in the 65th minute, Jordy Mongoy slotted home Callum Wilson’s cross to give the Wasps the lead. In an effort to restore parity House latched onto Shelley’s through pass, but, with only the keeper to beat, the ball went past the post. East Grinstead were defending well, until two substitutes – Dean Bown and Darren Boswell engineered the draw three minutes into injury time after Bown hit the bar and the onrushing Boswell got the ball into the net for the equaliser. This might not have been enough in the dying seconds, but a strong Daly save thwarted a curling free kick enabling Horsham to share the points. Horsham next play second placed Corinthian Casuals before travelling to Kent to take on lowly Ashford United.

YMCA’s roar stuns the Lions

Real progress made towards Horsham’s new ground Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Football Managers often say: “We’re taking it one game at a time” – an appropriate analogy for Horsham Football Club, who have been nomadic since vacating their Queen Street ground in 2008 after over 100 years of occupancy.

With great patience and fortitude the club have gone through the tortuous process of planning and designing their new home one step at a time, with several disappointments and more twists and turns that Spaghetti Junction along the way. But, now, at last, there are genuine reasons for optimism following Horsham District Council’s approval, last spring, of the planning application for the new ground at the Horsham Golf and Fitness complex at the Hop Oast end of the Worthing Road. Since then a licence was obtained from Natural England to enable a specialist ecological company to trap and relocate the great crested newts on site, and further preliminary work has been undertaken, HFC CEO John Lines saying: “We have been hard at work sectioning off the site with plastic fencing for the purpose of ecology reports and the clearance of some of the shrubbery.”

The club’s move to the new ground is dependent on making the necessary financial arrangements with Reside who will be constructing houses on part of the Holbrook Club playing area, owned by HFC, the funding from the housing development being required to finance the new ground. John Lines continued: “Reside’s financiers applied to HDC to be able to commence building at Holbrook on April 3 and I am pleased to say

that this has just been approved by the Planning Committee and on December 19 Reside and HFC will become unconditionally committed to the project and financial completion can take place on January 11. From there we will move on rapidly to install the netting inside the (adjacent) driving range and, once done, commence the ground work to level the site and put the utilities in place.” In the last nine years HFC has had successive ground sharing arrangements, Lancing being the club’s current temporary HQ, but, when the new ground opens with its state of the art clubhouse and two playing areas there will be the main pitch for adult matches and another, smaller one, for mini minor football. The new ground will provide much needed facilities for young footballers and a social venue for the local community, HFC Chairman Kevin Borrett enthusing: “These are exciting times at Horsham Football Club and the continued following of supporters is welcomed and highly valued by all of the Board and Committee.” The original aim was to have the new ground ready for football by September 2018 and, of course everyone at HFC and supporters are eager to be able to use the facilities as soon as possible, so when will that be? John Lines sums up by saying: “I cannot tell you yet when the ground will be ready for our first match because we are reliant on so many imponderable factors, not least of which will be the winter weather. But, it’s all beginning to seem like a reality now after such a long time coming.”

When the new ground opens, for HFC’s loyal supporters and all local football fans it will have been well worth the lengthy wait.

Pagham – the Lions – are a force to be reckoned with, unbeaten in their previous 10 games, 8 of which they had won, including trouncing runaway leaders Haywards Heath 3-0 and eliminating Lewes – top of the league above - from the Sussex Senior Cup. YM, though, had a score to settle - they lost 4-0 to Pagham at Nyetimber Lane in August, but, this time in good form, it was a different story. An early Sam Schaff cross showed intent before Dave Brown warmed James Binfield’s hands in the Pagham

goal in advance of Brown causing Binfield further anxiety ahead of a corner being fired over and Luke Gedling unleashing a curling free kick, but Binfield was up to the task. Then Brown headed wide and Schaaf seared the bar, but, Pagham had chances, too, with a corner and then, in a one on one, their shot ended up nearer the corner flag than the goal. After another YM corner, Callum Donaghey headed home, only for it to be disallowed for jostling in the box. A YM free kick was then punched clear and Luke Gedling’s header came to nought until Pagham’s Ryan Cox’s strike was promptly caught by keeper Aaron Jeal at the other end, who then ran out and threw himself on the ball to deny the visitors.

Just before the break, Schaaf turned on the spot and managed to get a shot in, but a superb close range reaction save kept the first half goal-less. On the restart, YM were forced to scramble the ball away, and Jeal tipped a strike round the post for Pagham’s fourth corner, prior to Schaaf breaking through

without success. Then, in the 62nd minute, with Pagham under pressure and their defence rooted, Luke Donaldson tapped in to put YM ahead. Revitalised, Pagham fired straight at Jeal, who also had to punch another blast away. But, between further Pagham corners, probing Man of the Match Phil Johnson put the game beyond reach with a close range goal in the 86th minute. In freezing conditions, the entertaining game – including seven yellow cards and twelve corners – was successfully closed down for a memorable YM win, delighted Manager Peter Buckley telling the District Post: “They had their full side out and came expecting to win but we hunted in packs every time they got the ball. It was a tough game, as we expected, but we put on a brilliant all round show. We’re having a great run but need to stay at our best because we’ve got another big challenge coming up at Chichester in the Quarter Final of the RUR Charity Cup.”

Tuesday December 12 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 1 4 Corinthian Casuals Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Depleted Horsham were outplayed by second placed Corinthian Casuals, and forced to play catch up after conceding three early goals, the Hornets’ erratic season continuing with a comprehensive defeat.

Horsham have proved that they have it in themselves to overturn good sides and the Casuals have been struggling of late, so there was a degree of optimism coming in to this game, but sadly it was misplaced. Not for the first time this season, Horsham were quickly on the back foot - with the opposition going in front in the fifth minute, Reyon Dillon cutting through the defence to beat Horsham keeper Brannon Daly.

And, it soon got worse – much worse - when ex Horsham striker Gabriel Odunaike slotted home a rebound and then, before the mid point of the first half, Max Oldham scored the Casual’s third, from close range. Fortunately, Odunaike failed to finish off a subsequent golden opportunity ahead of Toby

House firing wide Horsham’s first positive chance as the half finished with Horsham trailing 0-3. On the resumption Horsham made substitutions but the Casuals remained in control and scored again as the hour ticked up, when Hamilton Antonio found the Hornets’ defence wanting and put in a low shot to the left. A Horsham free kick raised hopes, but Danny Bracken in the Casual’s goal managed to keep out Steve Metcalf’s strike. Then, Tony Nwachukwu fired wide and a cross just eluded House. But, House did net a late consolation goal for Horsham when he successfully converted Lewis Hyde’s pass. Hyde might then have further reduced the deficit with a header from a corner but his effort was negated by Dillon, the game ending 4-1 in the visitors’ favour. On Saturday Horsham – now 17th - travel to Kent to play relegation threatened Ashford United, whom they eliminated from the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup at Lancing in early September, Horsham winning 6-0, their best result of the season.

Ahead of Saturday’s game Ashford have scored 21 times from 22 starts with a goal difference of minus 36, only bottom club Shoreham presenting worse stats.
