Andy’s Story: From too big for theme parks, to Charity bike rides and his own Slimming group Local Railway Manager, Andy Turner, has transformed his life by losing over 12 stone on Slimming World. He now uses his new found fitness to do charity rides to raise money and, next year, will ride from London to Amsterdam to raise money for Brain Tumour Research. First though, he is starting a new Saturday morning ‘Slimming World’ group in Horsham. In April 2015, Andy, weighing nearly 29 stone, finally realised he needed to do something about his weight. He had always been overweight, but now in his 40s it was really starting to affect him. Andy explained: “I’d always been big, even as a child. Over the years, my weight had fluctuated, but I would never say I had been a healthy weight. In my teens and twenties I’d never let it stop me doing things; I was active, I went skateboarding, built a car and more. But when I started skating again in 2008, I had a fall and badly broke my ankle, and it had a lot to do with my weight affecting my balance. Still I did nothing about losing weight. “But then something happened that made me realise I needed to change. I was at Chessington Theme Park with my family. We had queued for over an hour for

the Vampire ride, my youngest daughter Daisy was so excited to go on her first proper rollercoaster! But when we got to the seats I was gutted. Despite trying the special ‘larger’ seats, I didn’t fit. I couldn’t be with her on that ride, “Don’t worry Daddy” she said, but I could see she wanted me there, I was devastated, my weight was now affecting my family. Something had to change….” In late April 2015, Andy joined a local Slimming World group, and that moment would change his life. He continued: “I got out the car and headed in. Was I nervous? Yes! I was walking in to a group of Women, I was considerably bigger than everyone there, and I was embarrassed. I needn’t have been though. I was soon greeted by Claire the consultant, and taken over to the new members area. “I sat and listened to the new members talk, and I realised that this was fundamentally just about healthy eating. No complicated calorie counting, bizarre milkshakes - just good food and, by the sounds of it, enough to satisfy my appetite! I then listened to the Image Therapy session of the members already there. I liked the fact that no one was being criticised, even if they had gained a little, but on the whole it was losses.

Huge thankyou to our contributors: Horsham Rocks, Keith Holmes, Tim Hewlett & Diane Game

Continued from front page “These people were losing weight, and there was so much support for each other it seemed great. I then had to get my starting weight. Wow, was I really that big? I went away shocked by how heavy I was, but determined to give this plan a go”. When Andy returned next week, he had lost an amazing 1 stone in just 7 days. He had followed the plan to the letter and this was the moment Andy knew he could change his health for the better: “The Slimming World book became my bible! I ate so well, I couldn’t see how I could be losing! Steak, chicken, veg, potato, rice and more, all I did in most cases was lose the oil and processed foods, and replace them with fry light and good fresh items. It was great, chilli con carne, spaghetti Bolognese - all my favourites still on the menu.” Over the next year, Andy lost over 13 stone. He attended group every week and followed the plan of food optimising, and the weight came off. Even with his shift work, he was able to move between morning and evening groups to make sure he could weigh in. Being in group and staying for Image Therapy was a key part of his journey, not just for the food ideas, but for the support. Bad weeks or good weeks, his group became his friends: “We support each other not just in group, but through social media and more. I am just as pleased to see someone else have a good loss as I am myself!” Andy reached his target by April 2016, in a year he had almost halved his bodyweight. He made the top 10 of Slimming Worlds Man of the Year in 2016, and had a full feature in their national magazine, but there was one thing that was more important than anything else: “My family had a day out at Chessington again, and this time I went on every single ride in the whole park… including the Vampire! Daisy loved it, and gave me a big

hug, saying “Thank you for losing the weight Daddy, I’ve loved going on all the rides with you”. It melted my heart, that one moment made my whole journey worth it more than anything else”. Andy now cycles almost every day. In the summer, he raised over a £1100 riding for the British Heart Foundation in the London to Brighton bike ride, and in June 2018 is doing the 4 day 350 mile ride from London to Amsterdam, hoping to raise over £2000 for Brain Tumour Research: “I love how much more I am able to do things now and how active I’ve become, so it’s great to use that fitness for something worthwhile”.

Seeing how this has changed my life has made me want to hopefully inspire others to do the same Hoping to use his experience of losing weight with Slimming World, Andy is eager to help others. On Saturday, January 20 at 08:00, he will open the doors to a new Slimming World Group at St Leonards Church Hall, Cambridge Road. It’s called the Horsham Station group, quite apt considering what his day job is! “Seeing how this has changed my life has made me want to hopefully inspire others to do the same, so that is why I have taken the plunge and become a Slimming World consultant! I hope that I can help people through their journeys the way my consultant and group helped me through mine”. If you are interested in finding out more about Slimming World, please turn up on the day to hear how the plan works, or visit: www.slimmingworld.co.uk to find your local groups.

The residents and staff at Skylark House in Horsham were thrilled to welcome the 2nd Chennells Brook Brownies as guests over Christmas. The Brownies, all aged between 7 and 10, filled the home with beautiful Carols to mark the season, bringing smiles to

all. For details on how to join the group, please contact kategroves1@yahoo.co.uk. Meetings take place on Wednesdays, between 6-7.30pm, at St. Marks Church, North Heath Lane, North Horsham.

Christmas Day burglars appear in court Two men have appeared in court after a Christmas Day shop burglary in Pulborough. At 7.10pm on Christmas Day, Monday (25 December) police received a report that the Tesco Metro in London Road, Pulborough, had just been broken into and what appeared to be a large quantity of cigarettes had been stolen by thieves who had made off in a white van. Following enquiries, a van believed to be the one involved was found abandoned a short while later in Fittleworth. A quantity of cigarettes was found in the van. Further investigation resulted in officers stopping a taxi on the westbound A27 near Emsworth later that evening and arresting two men who were passengers on suspicion of the burglary. A large quantity of cigarettes was found in a duvet cover in the taxi. Mark Yeganeh, 50, unemployed, of Wingfield St, Portsmouth, and Ronald Wall, 37, a groundsman, of Sedgley Close, Southsea, have been charged with burglary and appeared in custody at Brighton Magistrates Court on Wednesday (27 December). They were remanded in custody to appear at Guildford Crown Court on 18 January

Cancer support centre seeks volunteers to run up and coming Horsham branch The Olive Tree Cancer Support Centre is a small, independent charity based in Crawley which has provided free support, advice, friendship and therapies to thousands of people in the local area and is a hugely valuable and much appreciated resource. Throughout 2017, a team of the Olive Tree volunteers took part in a number of community events in Horsham, including a “pop-up” shop in Swan Walk in March and “Funday Sunday” in July to try to gauge whether there would be sufficient demand from Horsham residents for an Olive Tree cancer support centre to be set up in the town. The response was truly overwhelming, with large numbers of people saying how much such a facility was needed and, as a result, the trustees have been working hard to make it happen. A centre representative explained: “A substantial number of people using the Olive Tree’s services come from the Horsham area. Although Crawley is not a huge distance from Horsham, we are well aware that making even the short journey between the two towns can seem like a bridge too far for anyone trying to deal with the effects of cancer diagnosis and treatments.”

A property in a central location has been identified and negotiations over the lease will be finalised soon. Some internal refurbishment will be required, in order to ensure that the property provides a welcoming environment and can be used for confidential counselling and complementary therapies It is anticipated that the centre will be ready to start welcoming visitors in Spring 2018. In the meantime, the centre needs to build a team of enthusiastic volunteers to run the Olive Tree Horsham, once it’s up an running. Volunteering opportunities will include front desk/reception, administration, fundraising, trustees, qualified complementary therapists and counsellors. “The Olive Tree is a great place to volunteer, you will become part of a friendly and supportive team who make a real difference to the lives of local people affected by cancer, whether they be the cancer patient or their friends, carers and families. Please visit our website to find out more about volunteering at the Olive Tree www.olivetreecancersupport. org.uk.” For further information, please contact: 01293 534465 for a chat or email: admin@olivetreecancersupport.org.uk

Is Blue Monday really a thing?

Blue Monday is the name given to Monday 15th January. Yes, it has been claimed that the third Monday in January is the most depressing day of the whole year! Back in 2005 a travel company declared that they had used an equation to calculate the worst date of the year. Influencing factors such as weather, debt, monthly salary, time since Christmas, time since failing our new year’s resolutions, low mo-

tivational levels, and the feeling of a need to take action were used to create it, and although the formula was deemed to be nonsensical by scientists, the name and the date has stuck. However, Angela Abbot from Holistically Balanced explained that there is some general truth in it. “January is a month that many people traditionally struggle with, or struggle to ‘feel good’ with themselves. Even if Blue Monday isn’t an actual ‘thing’, the lack of sunlight and fallout from Christmas can leave us feeling ‘less than’ great. Add that we may have already given up on our New Year resolutions and are feeling demotivated and we may be feeling blue for more than just one day.” She continued “There are lots of ways to change how we feel and it is good to keep in mind that winter is a time of introspection. So how we think and feel in winter will be different to how we naturally think and feel in the summer. We can still maintain a positive outlook to feel happy and confident in ourselves, but it might just be in a more understated way than at other times of the year!” You should start by looking at what is really important to you in relation to your health, home life, relationships, finances and career, as this will help you identify what you need to change for this year. Now you know what’s important, you can put a plan of action

Horsham district’s residents are generally excellent at recycling; the recycling is mostly clean and in good condition for reprocessors to make it into new stuff. However recent analysis of Horsham’s waste has shown that a large amount of recycling is still being thrown in the rubbish bin, along with other items that can be recycled elsewhere. The info graphic opposite shows what was found and how these materials can be reduced, reused or recycled. • Did you know that you can recycle empty aerosol cans and clean foil in your blue-top bin?

together to help you achieve it. Small actions taken regularly will provide a better, longer lasting result, as bigger changes will be harder to maintain. Then make some changes. What you’ve done in the past has taken you to where you are now, so if where you want to be is different, it will require some different skills, abilities and maybe a different mindset. Learning how to practice Mindfulness can help here, as it is a powerful life skill that can help influence all areas of your life. Importantly, you must learn to enjoy the journey. Life and goals are about the journey, not the destination. Putting yourlife on ‘hold’ until you reach your goal is never helpful, but traveling on the right track, that will get you to your desired result, is. The more you enjoy the process, the happier you’ll be and chances are the journey will be shorter as a result. And no matter how bad things feel at the moment, you will have plenty of things to be grateful for. In every bad situation there will be positives. Often, the small things in life that we take for granted will make us feel the most grateful when we stop and consider them. Residents warned of potential “lethal” combination of loneliness and winter

England calls on people in Surrey and Sussex to offer simple acts of companionship as part of its Stay Well This Winter campaign to promote good health and protect vulnerable people over the winter months. Evidence shows that being alone and feeling isolated increases the risk of premature death by around a third and is as damaging to our health as not exercising. A third of people who report loneliness have long-term health conditions which make them more vulnerable to the effects of cold

claim to be lonely and 8 out of ten carers have felt lonely or isolated looking after loved-ones. Professor Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England, said: “Loneliness has a devastating and life-threatening impact on people of all ages. For vulnerable groups, social isolation combined with the health dangers of colder weather, is a lethal combination. NHS staff see first-hand the consequences of loneliness, from dealing with life-threatening and serious illness to offering a lifeline to those to simply wanting a see a friendly face. We can all take steps to alleviate loneliness by looking out for family, friends and neighbours. These simple acts of companionship could be life-saving.” Independent research for the NHS’ Stay Well this Winter campaign released today shows 56% of people aged 18 to 74 would like to visit their elderly relatives, friends or neighbours more often, with 42% claiming it will be part of their New Year’s resolutions. The poll also found 41% of people aged 70 to 80 feel that it’s helpful to have someone to help them with everyday activities, to stay well over the winter months, such as help with getting the weekly supermarket shop done

(56%), help with picking up prescription medicines (48%) and help with getting to the pharmacist or doctor (43%). The findings come after the Jo Cox Foundation’s campaign to draw attention to the plight of millions of lonely people in the UK, and ahead of its Commission on Loneliness report. Jeremy Quin MP for Horsham stated: “I believe that we all have a responsibility at an individual, family, and community level, to identify people with care needs such as loneliness, and provide support to improve their health and wellbeing. There is no single solution that can tackle loneliness and I think that it is useful to have a range of solutions. In early December, Age UK Horsham stated: “Here in Horsham District we’re working as hard as we can all year round to help older people face the different challenges that growing older brings and, with your help, we can work to make sure no one in later life need be alone or isolated. If you would like further information about how you can help Age UK Horsham District to combat loneliness, please call: 01403 260560 or email: info@ ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk

England’s most senior nurse, Professor Jane Cummings, has warned of the “lethal” combination of loneliness and cold weather this winter. The chief nursing officer for the NHS in England said that loneliness and isolation pose a threat to physical and mental health for people of all ages and that this can have a real impact on already stretched NHS services, especially over the winter months when cold weather also poses a threat to many vulnerable groups. Her warning comes as NHS

weather. Heart attacks increase almost immediately after a cold weather snap and account for 40% of excess winter deaths. Hospitals also see a rise in the admission of stroke patients five days after the cold weather begins, while admissions for respiratory problems go up 12 days after the temperature drops. Three quarters of GPs say they see up to five people a day who have come in mainly because they are lonely, while another one in ten GPs sees between six and ten such patients daily. The number of hospital admissions is also linked to colder weather circulating viral infections, including flu. Older people who may be frail, or who have existing health conditions, are particularly at risk. Half of people aged 75 and over live alone, around two million people, and many say they go days or even weeks with no social interaction at all. Research also suggests lonely people have a 64% increased chance of developing clinical dementia and are more prone to depression, whilst a third of people with dementia said they had lost contact with friends. People of all ages can be affected by loneliness, for example, a third of new mums

As temperatures plummet and snow blizzards sweep across the country, the animals at Drusillas Park in Alfriston are staying warm with a little help from their loving keepers. All of the animals at Drusillas have received extra bedding to ensure they have somewhere warm to snuggle up. The heating has also been turned up around the zoo, with heat lamps remaining on throughout the day and night. Drusillas’ Head Keeper, Mark Kenward, explained: “Most of our animals are completely unfazed by the sudden drop in temperature. The sleet has come down

pretty thick and fast on a few occasions, and the majority of our animals have run straight out to explore! “For our red pandas Mulan and Anmar, the sudden flurries of snow have been a very pleasant surprise. They thrive in the colder weather; in the wild red pandas are native to the forest regions of China and Nepal, where the climate remains cool throughout the year. They are far better equipped for the cold than the heat, due to the thick layer of fur that covers their bodies, including their feet! Their activity levels increase in the winter and the precious pair

have been out making the most of the cold snap!” Unlike the red pandas, Drusillas’ meerkats have been less than impressed by the sudden drop in temperature. Meerkats prefer much sunnier climes and would swap sunbathing for snow any day of the week. The curious creatures spent a little time investigating the icy trees, but made a rapid retreat to huddle up under their heat lamps. Head Keeper, Mark Kenward, commented: “Our Snowy Owls have also been in their element. In the wild, these stunning birds inhabit the chilly skies above the Arctic, where temperatures are incredibly low and snow is common. In order stay warm in these conditions, they have dense plumage, as well as feathers covering their feet and beak to keep them nice and toasty.” However one species in particular excelled in weathering the chilly conditions…the humans! Collyer’s

inspires students to learn and develop through high quality teaching, providing learning opportunities through first class facilities and technologies and giving support and guidance. What impresses me most is the promotion of an inclusive culture that values everyone in the college. “At Collyer’s we share the following collective view: Students first, Staff always, Governors that serve.”

New Year’s Eve Viennese Gala concert at Brighton Dome

Soprano Rebecca Bottone is one of the most versatile performers on the operatic stage today. It has been said that she gets her charisma from her father, the tenor Bonaventura Bottone, but her chameleon ability is entirely her own. Her character roles have been highly acclaimed in performances at the Royal Opera House and with the Welsh National Opera. On New Year’s Eve she appears as herself when she joins the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra at Brighton Dome for the second year running, to add glamour and sparkle to a very Viennese celebration. Her contributions will include “By Strauss” from An American in Paris, “The

Waltz Song” from Tom Jones and the bewitching “Vilja” from The Merry Widow. When she sang here last New Year’s Eve The Argus reviewer wrote: “the charming Rebecca Bottone, a soprano who loves to show off in the nicest possible sense, seduced and dazzled with a display that showed not just vocal agility but a fine control of tone and soaring power. Her supreme talents were best shown in the melodious Vilja by Lehar, enhanced by shimmering strings.” The orchestra will welcome in 2018 with a feast of popular orchestral favourites from that golden age of Viennese light music just before the First World

War – a programme of lively and nostalgic music from the repertoire of the Strauss family and its contemporaries. Johann Strauss II captured the light-hearted approach to life favoured by the Viennese of his day more than anyone else. With gems such as the Emperor Waltz he established himself as “The Waltz King” and surely no such celebration of Viennese music is complete without that perennial favourite The Blue Danube Waltz. Alongside the traditional foottapping Strauss waltzes, polkas and marches, conductor Barry Wordsworth has included favourite light music scores from some of our finest English composers: Ralph Vaughan Williams’ fabulous English folk tune Fantasia on Greensleeves, Malcolm Arnold’s gorgeous folk tune influenced English Country Dance No.8 and Richard Rodney Bennett’s “Waltz” from Murder on the Orient Express – a brilliant musical depiction of a train moving away from the station platform. With such a varied and entertaining programme on offer, why not join the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday afternoon to welcome in the New Year with style and panache. This concert, firmly established as part of the city’s festivities, nearly sold out last year, so do book early to avoid disappointment.

The Circus of Horrors returns After taking to the road over 22 years ago and touring all over the world, the phenomenon that is The Circus of Horrors returns to The Hawth with its latest brand new incarnation, Voodoo. The spectacular show features an amazing combination of the bizarre and the fantastic, as act after act perform and weave together a sensational horror story with the darkest of magic. Driven by a mainly original soundscape and performed with a forked tongue firmly in each cheek, The Circus of Horrors is a night at The Theatre you will never forget... Annually, the Circus plays over one hundred UK theatres and now takes in festivals around the world, including The Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, The Wacken Festival in Germany, plus shows in Chile, Uruguay, Holland, Belgium, Argentina, France, Italy, Ireland, Finland, Hong Kong and Moscow, where it became the first UK Circus ever to perform in Russia. The show also played an astounding ten nights at London’s O2 Arena. This is not the first time that The Circus of Horrors has created history, as it is the only circus ever to reach the finals of Britain’s Got Talent and the first circus to perform in London’s West End for over 100 years. The Circus Of Horrors’ appearances on various TV shows have turned what started as a cult show into a household name – taking

the extreme to the mainstream. TV credits include The X Factor, The Slammer, Daybreak, Fairground Attractions, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Body Shockers, Fake Reaction, This Morning, The One Show and A Royal Command

Conservative controlled Government over the cuts. One councillor says the Government has moved the problem of cutting spending to local councils. The Government confirmed that within two years Horsham will lose all the £1.6m in revenue support grant it currently receives from central Government through taxation and it will need to become totally self- sufficient. This reduction in grant is in addition to cuts totalling £1.1m over the past three years. Leader of the council Cllr Ray Dawe said: "We have one of the lowest council tax levels in the country. At the same time we have been able to maintain a high level of service to our residents. “However, while we shall persist with trying to find further efficiency savings and minimise any increased charges, the options for reducing costs are becoming more limited. “Effectively, in his aim of reducing the national deficit, the Chancellor has simply moved a problem on to local councils. What is clear is that while the council has a sound

Residents face the prospect of being hit in the pocket because of a £1.6 million hole in local budgets caused by the Government “passing the buck” by withdrawing financial support to Horsham District Council. Horsham councillors must decide in February how to fill the gap. Three of the suggestions to be considered are a council tax increase, a £1.50 all day Sunday and bank holiday charge in Horsham town car parks, and changes in waste collection service. The shock news came among what the council called “a flurry of ministerial announcements” just before the start of the Christmas break. It has brought about a disagreement between the Conservativedominated district council and the

Top cop slams “blatant” drink drivers

Residents face paying more as council loses £1.6 million News Editor

Drivers showed blatant disregard of drink-driving laws despite a publicised police blitz. That is the view of a top police officer after nearly 200 people were arrested in the crackdown between December 1 and the New Year period. Some drivers face court appearances this month and others have already been before magistrates for alleged drink or drug-related driving offences. Chief Inspector Andy Gooch said: "The volume of arrests we have made in Sussex demonstrates the blatant disregard a lot of people have for the law. "At a time when most people are celebrating and spending time with their loved ones, it is disappointing to see that a number of motorists continue to ignore our safety advice.” Several drivers from the Horsham district were among those arrested and their names have been publicised as part of the crackdown. More motorists were arrested in Sussex on New Year's Day, immediately after the conclusion of the Christmas 2015 crackdown on drink

and drug-drivers under Operation Dragonfly, which was Surrey and Sussex Police's Christmas crackdown on drink and drug-driving. Phil Nicholas, Chief Inspector of the Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit, said: "I feel the campaign has been a success in that we have arrested a large number of people who may otherwise have been involved in an accident or ended up causing fatalities on the roads in Sussex. "However, it is extremely disappointing that some people have not taken heed of the message, as is reflected in the statistics with 21more people being arrested for drink and drug-driving related offences in the first three days of 2016 - 10 on New Year's Day alone. It shows that this campaign is not aimed solely at targeting drink and drug-drivers at Christmas; it is a year-round strategy and we will continue to bring offenders to justice." Of the 182 arrests made in December, a total of 27 people have been convicted, and a further 72 have been charged and are due to appear in court. People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk. Search for mystery lottery winner winning ticket before the prize claim deadline, then the prize money, plus all the interest it has generated, will go to help National Lottery-funded projects across the UK. A National Lottery spokesperson said: “We’re eager to find the mystery ticket-holder and unite them with their winnings – this amazing prize could really make a huge difference to somebody’s life. We’re urging everyone who bought a EuroMillions ticket in this area to check their old tickets again or look anywhere a missing ticket could be hiding. “Try checking in the pockets of clothing, in wallets, bags and down the back of the sofa – someone out there could literally be sitting on a fortune. We have the champagne on ice and our fingers crossed that the lucky winner comes forward to claim their win.” To help jog EuroMillions players’ memories about what was happening around the date of the draw in question, rugby fans may remember that October 10 saw the final games in England’s World Cup pool. Whilst Australia beat Wales 15-6 to top the group, England’s emphatic 60-3 win over Uruguay at least restored some pride after a lacklustre World Cup campaign. Someone who bought a lottery ticket in Horsham is holding a ticket worth a small fortune, say organisers. At the time the District Post went to press the lucky holder of a EuroMillions prize worth £58,838.90 had yet to make a claim. Organisers say the winner is holding a ticket bought in the Horsham District. It could be a local person or someone from further afield who happened to be in the town. If they do not claim the money by early April the money will be lost to them. Earlier this week National Lottery players were urged to check and double-check their tickets for the chance to claim the prize. The holder matched the five main numbers and no Lucky Star numbers in the EuroMillions draw on October 9 last year. The winning EuroMillions numbers on that date were 1, 40, 42, 43, 47 and the Lucky Star numbers were 9 and 11. The lucky ticket-holder has until April 6 to claim their prize.. Man jailed for hor Phil Dennett News Editor

A Billingshurst man involved in systematic sexual abuse of a young woman with two others is now serving 10 years in prison. Joseph Noye, 27, of Plaistow Road, was found guilty on one count of oral rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of criminal damage. He was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court. The court heard that the victim, a woman in her 20s, was abused over a period of five days back in October 2014. The abuse began when a man, who was unknown to the victim, entered the property under false pretences. This man was later identified as Charlie Jones, 28, who received 20 years jail. Once inside the property Jones became controlling and committed a series of sexual offences against the woman. The abuse continued over the following days with Jones inviting various men to the property where they too committed serious offences against the woman who police say received serious internal injuries as a result. The victim gained the courage to call police on the fifth day of abuse

and Jones was arrested a short time later. He was charged and remanded in custody. A further six men were arrested in the days which following with charges being brought against them in December 2014. They were then released on conditional bail until the trial at Guildford Crown Court which and lasted 12 weeks from last September.

Sun soaked English Festival could be repeated phil dennett News Editor

Horsham ‘s first English Festival could be become an annual event, say supporters. Thousands were entertained over two days with a combination of traditional English dance, music, classic vehicles, traditional food, drink and entertainments. Afterwards Dick Streeter, who was heavily involved in both days, said: “It was great to see the ideas we had worked on all come to fruition. traction and I’m looking forward to reviewing what we did and what might be possible next year.” Saturday’s Broadwood Day of Dance fill the town with a riot of colour, movement and sound as more Morris dancers than you could shake a stick at performed. This year more than 25 dancing ‘sides’ were represented, together with Saturday’s Carfax Local Produce and Craft market plus the new feature of a display of Morris Minor cars on the Forum. Sunday’s Horsham Folk Club concert in aid of Crawley and Horsham Samaritans was extended with displays of classic cars from Arun Motors, the latest Jaguars from Harwoods and classic bikes from Dresda supported by over 20 privately owned classic British bikes including Nortons, Triumphs, Vincents and BSAs. King Henry Eighth and his Tudor court and the Loxwood Joust brought more fun and more than a smattering of history to proceedings given weight by the evocative Traction engine farming contractor display from Horsham Traction Company. Elsewhere in the Carfax, Hepworth’s brewery, Help the Aged’s Tea Marquee and the Horsham Rotary LINC bake stall vied for taste buds attention with hot street food from Garlic Wood Farm and Pig in a Jacket and the Pitcairn shell fish stall. For children there were Busy Days face painting, a tea cups fun fair ride and traditional games including a coconut shy and the walking balloons stall in Swan Walk Shopping Centre.

The family of a man stabbed savagely to death on the A24 by a paranoid schizophrenic believe he might never have crossed paths with his killer if mental health experts had done their jobs better. The NHS trust involved admitted this week failures in its care of severely mentally ill Matthew Daley. The 35-year-old stabbed retired solicitor Don Lock 39 times after a minor, low-speed crash between their vehicles. Horrified witnesses described it as a frenzied attack. Daley is now awaiting sentence on July 8 after a jury at Lewes Crown Court found him guilty on Monday of the manslaughter of 79-year-old Mr Lock. After the trial Colm Donaghy, chief executive of the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, admitted failings in the care of Daley, while also indicating it was uncertain whether or not they would have led to the tragedy. Mr Donaghy said in a statement seen by millions of television viewers: “We didn’t give Matthew the right care. What I can’t say is that that would have had an impact on the outcome.” But Mr Lock’s grieving fam-

Pet owners are more likely to heartlessly dump them in the summer months, says the Horsham-based Royal Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Statistics suggest it will be anything but a summer of love for hundreds of poor creatures, with one pet being abandoned every hour on average. The numbers recorded by the charity soar from a relative low of 599 rejected in May to 1087 dumped in July, with June at 830, August 834 and September 891. Every year nationally the charity is called out to rescue hundreds of animals across England and Wales after their owners abandon them and in many cases leave them for dead. In 2015 a total of 2,751 animals were rescued by the animal welfare charity with a peak in admissions in July. Now the society is bracing itself for another summertime influx of dumped animals

About 80 people have their jobs at risk as Beales department store in Horsham faces closure. The company confirmed to the District Post this week that the store will shut in July, ten years after it came to the town. The store employs 31 Beales workers, but there are about 50 others not on the company’s payroll working on concessions within the store. Beales opened at The Forum at the old Allders store at Lower Tanbridge Way in September 2006. A statement from the company said: “The landlord of the Beales store in Horsham has given notice to terminate the lease. The lease ends in July 2016. Beales is disappointed, as it would have liked to have continued trading there. “This matter is separate to CVA (company voluntary arrangement) negotiations. Beales employs 31 staff in its Horsham branch and is currently considering options to re-locate some of these staff to

The landlord of the Beales store in Horsham has given notice to terminate the lease. The loss of Beales mirrors the decline of top-class large department stores in Sussex towns. Burgess Hill lost its large Victorian Hoadleys stores at Junction Road many years ago, Haywards Heath lost its top-class Hiltons store in South Road, and Brighton lost the renowned Hanningtons store in North Street. None has ever been replaced with a similar store and in more recent years stores have also faced fierce competition from people turning to internet shopping

An 11-year-old girl fighting cancer was heartbroken when a hit and run driver brought tragedy to her life. Her angry mother says the incident is just one of several heartbreaking deaths in the same road involving cherished pet cats. Talented gymnast Molly Jane Weston is having chemotherapy for a rare bone cancer and her pet Siamese Pandora was one of her great comforts. But early one morning a driver hit the two-year-old cat as it was grooming itself in Friday Street, Warnham, near the family home, and the driver did not stop. Last Thursday in the same street Molly Jane’s friend Poppy Mayer, 12, lost her cat Wilbur under cruel circumstances. Wilbur was shot in the head with an air gun and as he tried to reach home a driver ran him over, failing to stop. Only two days before, little Molly Strafino, eight, and brother Vito lost their cat Snowy when another driver ran it over in the same road, again not stopping. Molly Jane’s mother Sophie, of estate agents Mapp and Weston, told the Post: “I had to pick up Pandora from the road. I don’t think the drivers think about how much this affects the kids. They are just carrying on, on their way to work. “Pandora was Molly’s Jane’s best

pet, and her death was absolutely hideous. It set Molly Jane back in her treatment. Because of her condition and treatment she can’t have another cat until three months after her treatment is finished in August, and Pandora was a great comfort for her. Apart from the shooting, Sophie believes the cat deaths are down to thoughtlessness rather than being deliberate acts. She said: “I think it is just commuters in a hurry. Friday Street is an absolute death trap. There will be an accident here, I am sure someone will get injured. Friday Street is supposed to be a 20 miles an hour zone and it is abused daily.” Young Poppy was so upset about the fate of her shot cat that she wrote a touching message that has been posted around

died. Xoxox poppy, 12” The happier news for the Weston family is that Molly Jane is responding well to her treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. Sophie said: “She is actually clear, although she doesn’t finish her treatment until August. The doctors say she will make a full recovery. The cancer had stopped being active and she is back her elite gymnast sessions. She has handled it all very well. She had the cancer in seven areas. It was first diagnosed after she was unable to walk because of hole in her hip. It was found she also had a double back fracture and a fractured collar bone. At the age of 10 we had to start pushing her around in a buggy. She has to take 18 tablets a day, but she has been absolutely brilliant in the way she has handled all this.” Molly Jane and Daisy Weston

School crossing patrollers at blackspots will get body cameras to record thoughtless drivers, if a pilot scheme proves successful. “Lollipop man” Len Howard is trying out the equipment after suffering from motorists driving past him without stopping, endangering pupils and parents about to cross the road. He has also experienced drivers winding windows down to shout abuse at him. West Sussex County Council has now joined with Camelsdale Primary School, near Billingshurst and Sussex Police to trial a body camera outside the school gates. Len wears the body camera, christened by the school as ‘Len’s Lens’, across his chest. Attached by the lapels of his coat, it can capture audio and video of motorists driving dangerously or being abusive. Temporary signs are up outside the school to warn offending motorists they are now on camera. Head teacher Sarah Palmer said: “We were concerned about the safety of our children and parents. “We have done a number of ini-

as well as rising rents and other overheads. Over the years Beales has sold a huge range of goods under one roof including services such as bath shop, bedding, Café Nova, china, glass, cookshop cosmetics and fragrance, decorative accessories, electrical, fashion accessories, furniture, occasional gifts, housewares, womens fashions, shoes, lingerie, nightwear, swimwear, luggage, menswear, stationery and toys. The opening of the Horsham store ten years ago was relatively recent in the firm’s history. Beales empire began in 1881 when John Beale opened what was then called the Fancy Fair and Oriental House in Bournemouth, considered to be the firm’s flagship store in later years. It is believed to have been the first store chain to have a “real life” Father Christmas, in 1885. The opening of the Horsham store much later was seen as a jobs boost and also the addition of a prestige store name to a town that already had a reputation for one of the most attractive town centres in Sussex. Now the town must wait to see how long it takes to fill such a large and prominent building while the staff try to settle their futures..

elty of their Christmas present pet has worn off by the summer, they don’t want the responsibility of finding someone to look after their pet while they are away on holiday or whether more pets are found dumped because of the longer daylight hours we will never know. It could be any number of reasons. “All we know is that there is a real peak in the number of abandonments in the summer months - July in particular - and it is animal welfare charities like us at the RSPCA that are left to pick up the pieces. There is a huge strain on our resources at this time of year because of this. “Many abandoned animals that are rescued by the RSPCA are very badly neglected and poorly so need urgent vet care and often hospital treatment.” Some of the more disturbing cases the charity has seen so far this year include Bertie the Yorkshire terrier who was dumped with matted fur in a wheelie bin, Maverick the Staffordshire Bull Terrier abandoned at London Victoria coach station when his owners could not take him on holiday with them and Peanut the lurcher puppy that was left for dead under a bush.

No summer of love for some pets this year too, with some victims in Sussex. It is thought one contributing factor of people dumping their animals in the summer months is down to some owners heading off on holiday and not finding anyone to look after their pet while they are away. The charity’s Supt Simon Osborne said: “People often think that Christmas is the time we see the most abandoned animals - but it is actually the summer. “In the summer months the number of dumped animals we rescue spikes up in number - with one animal being collected every hour on average**. “Every day our inspectors face cases where animals have been left abandoned in fields, dumped in boxes, left for dead at the side of roads and even left outside our animal centres and hospitals. It is just heartbreaking. These poor animals are often just dumped without a care for their welfare or what might happen to them. “We will never know why these animals are just discarded like rubbish. It could be for any number of reasons. Whether it is the fact that more pets are abandoned in the summer because the nov-

Above all, drugdriving is not a risk worth taking. “We have a duty and a commitment to keep the roads in Sussex safe, and as such we take a zero tolerance approach to drug-driving. Anyone caught committing the offence will be dealt with accordingly.” Under the new law, it is an offence to drive while over the prescribed limit of illegal drugs. But motorists are also liable to criminal proceedings if they are caught driving while over the prescribed limit of legal drugs. Any individual convicted of drugdriving faces a minimum 12-month disqualification, an unlimited fine, up to six months in prison and a criminal record. Later she pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates Court to driving with 57mg of benzoylecgonine per litre of blood in her system. The legal limit is 50mg. She was disqualified from driving for 30 months, and ordered to pay a £150 criminal courts charge, a £110 fine, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge. In March 2015 the Government approved prescribed limits for a number of legal and illegal drugs for which motorists can be tested against. This makes it a criminal offence to drive if you have certain controlled drugs above a specific limit in your blood. Since February last year, police have also had a new tool at their disposal to crackdown on drugdrivers. The roadside Drug Wipe testing kit, as used on Keating, takes a swab from the motorist and can detect cocaine or cannabis use within 10 minutes. Officers, working in connection with the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, are now reminding drivers of the dangers associated with drug-driving and the impact of such actions. Sergeant Phil Badman, of the Surrey and Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “The consequences of drug-driving can be lethal. The gang also struck in Burgess Hill at The Warren and The Ridings, in Farlington Avenue, Haywards Heath, and four times in 2014 at Bognor, twice in Andrew Avenue, once in Drake Park and once in Mansfield Road. There were also 23 burglaries across Devon. At Exeter Crown Court last week the three were jailed after being found guilty of conspiracy to com-

mit burglaries in Devon and Sussex during 2014 and 2015. Tomas Paulavicius, 36, was sentenced to eight years, Dainius Gastilavicius, 39, was given seven years, and Arturas Malysovas, 21, six years. All were from East London. Devon and Cornwall Police led the lengthy investigation working closely with the West Sussex Priority Crime Team of Sussex Police. The investigation began in 2014 after a series of specific burglaries

In June 2015 detectives launched a nationwide appeal to trace three potential victims of crime after memory cards were recovered during the investigation at Paulavicius’ home. Photographs taken on holiday in Koh Sumai, Thailand, were released of potential victims officers were keen to identify. Following the successful appeal on social media, the woman in the photographs, from Lincolnshire, contacted police. She had been the victim of a burglary and was subsequently reunited with her stolen property. Detective Constable James Wadley of the Sussex Police Priority Crime Team added: “This was a complex and worthwhile investigation in which we worked closely with our colleagues in Devon and Cornwall Police. Identifying the owner of the memory card was key linking the offenders to the series of burglaries. “This guilty verdict will bring some reassurance and peace of mind to the victims who suffered a very traumatic experience, and in some cases, lost sentimental valuables that have been irreplaceable.” Pictured are Tomas Paulavicius (left), Dainius Gastilavicius (centre) and Arturas Malysovas, (right).

were identified by Devon and Cornwall Police, in which UPVC door locks were snapped to enable the offenders to get into the property. Detective Constable James Brice, based in Totnes, said: “The offenders, who were all living in East London, were identified by local officers. It became clear that this was national problem as the three men were part of an organised criminal gang travelling across the country committing similar offences.”

Council tax payers in Horsham district will fork out about £50 extra a year for services after being hit by another increase that has fuelled a Tory versus Tory protest. Residents will pay nearly 4 per cent more in West Sussex County Council tax from April if a county cabinet recommendation is approved by full council on February 19. That comes after Horsham District councillors recently recommended a rise of 1.2 per cent in the district council tax, to be approved by full council on February 24. If both are given the nod, as expected, it would mean residents in Horsham district paying a total of about £47 a year extra for district and county taxes. This is made up of an average county increase of £45.90 and a district increases of £1.63 on average. On top of the county and district taxes there will be average increase of £2.79 a year (1.98 per cent) in Sussex Police tax, known as precept, and any parish or town council

precept depending where you live. Southwater Parish Council is increasing its precept by 5.2 per cent, adding an average of £3.64 a year to council tax bills in that area. Horsham and West Sussex Councils, both Conservative-run, have said a large reduction in grant from the Conservative Government, as part of continuing austerity meas-

Horsham and West Sussex Councils, both Conservativerun, have said a large reduction in grant from the Conservative Government, as part of continuing austerity measures, has forced their hand

expected grants cut and increased demand for services has produced a £44.2 million “black hole” in the budget. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet is proposing a council tax increase of 3.95 per cent, with budget for 2016/17 set at £529million. The county council says its aim is to safeguard critical frontline services and protecting the most vulnerable. The council tax increase includes the two per cent charge announced by Chancellor George Osborne in November 2015 to help councils meet the demands of supporting an increasingly ageing population. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said the council had raised concerns about the settlement with local MPs and Government. Louise said: “It is with a heavy heart that we present this budget and propose this increase after six years of a council tax freeze. I hope residents will understand that this proposal is not being made lightly. “We are one of the councils worst hit by this funding settlement from Government. That combined with increasing pressure on our resources means we have to propose this increase.”

| STORRINGTON STEYNINGHorsham Football Club is cele-

brating one of its most important victories in its long history after councillors approved plans for its new ground. This time their win was in the council “chamber” as the north planning committee of Horsham District Council gave the go-ahead to two applications crucially tied to each other and the future of the club. The councillors gave almost unanimous approval for both the separate ground and housing applications, though the housing provoked long discussion and some objections. The club’s Life President Frank King told the Post on Tuesday evening: “It’s absolutely fantastic and I’m thrilled to bits. At long last we can now move forward”. Andy Meadus of Horsham FC Supporters Club said: “I wasn’t expecting such a strong vote in favour after some of the negative comments made at the meeting, so I’m pleasantly shocked. It’s great news.”

a huge success

The Ryman League South club, formed in 1898, said the new ground was desperately needed for its survival. It had already won backing from professional planners on the district council |who had recommended approval of both schemes, but needed the go-ahead from councillors. The first application approved was for the new ground and was for Horsham Golf and Fitness, Worthing Road, Southwater and the Holbrook Club, North Heath Lane, Daffodil parade Horsham. It was for on a 3G Football Ground, including main pitch and training pitch, clubhouse, stands, access, parking and landscaping to serve as the home ground for Horsham Football Club. The second application approved was for housing at playing fields at Holbrook Club, North Heath Lane, Horsham, crucial to the funding of the new ground scheme. 58 homes are to be built. Both applications were made by the club and Reside Developments. Kevin Borrett the club’s chairman said: “ I am delighted. The club had worked extremely hard to explain the benefits of both proposals and respond to concerns, so I couldn’t be happier with the outcome” People of Horsham have big

hearts, say charity organisers. Marie Curie Nurses in Horsham say they want to want to thank everyone involved in making the 2016 Great Daffodil Appeal a great success. The month long appeal in March saw volunteers out in force to encourage people to make a donation and wear the charity’s daffodil pin to help support people living with a terminal illness and their loved Your Body ones. It raised £3, 943.

News Editor

Highlights of the Great Daffodil Appeal in the area include people getting together to collect at Tesco, Sainsburys and the town centre, giving more than 70 hours of volunteering. Kate Holdsworth, Community Fundraiser for West Sussex said: “I would like to say a great big thank you to everyone in Horsham for being so generous and kind, by either donating or by being one of our amazing volunteers.”

A24 Driver jailed for worst dangerous driving in Sussex A motorcyclist who exceeded 100 miles an hour on the A24 near Horsham and then narrowly avoided colliding with pedestrians and other vehicles during a high speed pursuit has started a jail sentence. Police describe the behaviour of Gavin Collett as the most outrageous incident of dangerous driving they have ever seen in Sussex. Collett, 32, was driving so fast when first spotted on the A24 southbound between Broadbridge Heath and Findon that the National Police Air Service helicopter was called in to track his movements. A court heard he carried out a series of dangerous manoeuvres at various locations, including builtup parts of Worthing and Brighton on March 10 this year. A Horsham mother is staging a peace picnic this weekend after being disgusted by abuse attacks linked to the vote to quit the EC. Nationally there have been several incidents of hate abuse against people because of the historic referendum decision to quit the European Union and one alleged incident at Southwater is being investigated. Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has expressed her concern about the attacks. Now Jemma Warren, 27, has organised a United Horsham Picnic for The People on Sunday at the Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park. Jemma is putting aside her own personal cancer battle against Hodgkin Lymphoma, for which she is receiving chemotherapy, to organise the antihate picnic on July 10 at noon. Katy Bourne said: “It deeply saddens me that, since the EU referendum, reports of hate crime appear to have increased nationally. “Like many, I have no time for bigotry and believe that no one should be singled out and victimised because of their race, faith, sexuality, gender or disability. “Although I welcome the news that Sussex Police has not seen an increase in reports of hate crime locally, I do know that many minority groups have not always had the same trust in the police and this often leads to a reluctance to report. As PCC, I am determined to improve this for everyone in Sussex which is why I fully support any initiative that tackles hate crime, a key priority in my Police Crime Plan”. Meanwhile Jemma looks forward to completing her last two chemotherapy sessions, having been given the “allclear”. She said: “It is curable, which is good. I am officially in remission. I am actually cancer free, but I have to complete the course.”

driving for three years and must remain on licence for at least 12 months on release from prison. He admitted the offences at an earlier hearing. His two-year prison sentence includes time already spent in custody from his arrest on March 13 .PC Ben Henwood, of the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit, who led the investigation, said: “Collett’s sentence is fully deserved, and it represents the massively aggravated nature of his behaviour over an extended period of time. While this is a good result from a policing point of view, the best result is the fact that no one was injured on that day, and we’re extremely thankful for that. “We have reviewed the footage and this is without doubt the most outrageous incident of dangerous driving we have ever seen in Sussex. “Throughout his journey, Collett showed a blatant disregard for anyone else’s safety and it’s a miracle no one else was hurt. Collett eventually handed himself in to police in Hampshire three days after the incident.

Roads Policing Unit identified the vehicle before the Robin Hood Roundabout on the A24 southbound, and it was followed onto the A264 towards Five Oaks. Shortly afterwards, the vehicle failed to stop when signalled to do so by police and a pursuit followed. During the pursuit, the vehicle was driven at what a court was told were high speeds and in a dangerous manner in a narrow country road, before officers lost sight of it. The vehicle was later found parked at the rear of a farm in West Chiltington Lane, near Coolham, at about 1pm, where Freeman was arrested and taken into custody. Investigating officer Peter KingFisher said: “Freeman was witnessed driving on the A24, while disqualified and uninsured, at speeds in excess of 90mph right in front of a marked police car. He then pulled off onto the A264 and stopped at a set of temporary traffic lights. With police behind him and the lights still red, he sped through into oncoming traffic, forcing other motorists out of the way. “We pursued Freeman but lost him as he travelled at 80mph along Bashurst Hill, which is a very narrow country lane. The manner of his driving throughout was disgraceful and a lot of other motorists had to take evasive action to avoid a collision. He could quite easily have caused a serious accident. “His sentence reflects the seriousness of the offences he committed and the complete disregard he showed for other road users.”

They also did well at AS Level, which is taken by most students at age 17 after one year or as an addition to A2 at age 18. The A2 grades for A*-E in West Sussex this year are above national and an improvement on last year. The proportion of passes at A*-B were also slightly up this year. At AS the percentage of passes at Grades A and B show an improvement on last year. Good results have also been achieved by young people obtaining BTEC Certificates. Christine Field, acting Cabinet Member for Education and Skills congratulated all West Sussex students studying in Local Authority maintained schools, academies and colleges on their achievements. She said: “I am absolutely delighted with the work ethic shown by students in order to achieve their personal goals. “I would like to acknowledge the on-going hard work of our teachers in helping young people to achieve these goals, and the tremendous contribution of parents and carers in offering support to youngsters at what I know can be a very stressful time.”

Your chance to star in this years show

As the next generation of A level students picked up crucial GCSE results yesterday, the outgoing one prepared for the next stage in life after collecting impressive A level results last week. On Thursday of last week hundreds of youngsters across the district collected A level results with the annual mix of hugs, celebration and calls home from mobile phones, as well as a few shrugs of the shoulders and tears at disappointing results. For most there was some reason to party or a sigh with relief, while their schools and colleges across the district reported delight at their efforts. Christ’s Hospital reported 70 per cent of passes at A*-B, Collyer’s had an A2 pass rate of 99 per cent, Steyning Grammar celebrated a 99 per cent overall pass rate, and Farlington reported outstanding results. The optimism was reflected by West Sussex County Council, which said early reports provided by school sixth forms showed that young people in West Sussex

Once inside, the raiders broke into a glass cabinet to remove the electronic equipment and also raided a number of tills, making off with a small amount of cash. Less than five minutes after breaking in, three men were seen running from the building carrying what appeared to be duffel bags. A police helicopter was called in to assist the search for the men, but they were not located.”

Young people seeking rented homes will be offered more than 200 on a new private estate near Horsham. Every one of the 227 homes on the latest phase of building at Kilnwood Vale off the A264 will be a private rental property. But before the latest stage of its approval this week people living nearby claimed it would bring trouble to the rest of the estate, which will eventually have about 2500 homes when it is finished. The all-rental homes are part of a move in a relatively new idea to solve the acute shortage of rented properties for young people who are in good jobs but find the excessive cost of buying a home beyond them. Before Horsham district councillors backed the scheme they read a report detailing concerns in more than 30 letters from people living near the proposed site, which is known as phase 2.1B of the Kil-

Bus users have launched a campaign for a better service for their village. Their petition calls for an evening bus service in Broadbridge Heath, near Horsham and a better Sunday service. Residents have signed up for the petition to Metrobus Ltd, Arriva Kent and Surrey Ltd and Compass Travel (Sussex) Ltd. The campaigners said in a statement of their aims : “Broadbridge Heath is an area served by three bus services during the day, but none in the evening. With a growing population due to new housing developments, an evening service is becoming increasingly necessary. “Broadbridge Heath is a long walk from the town centre, not something you want to do after working all day. Some people are unable to walk such a distance. “An evening service in Broadbridge Heath may also benefit other areas it passes through and possibly provide evening links with other towns. “We request an hourly service, running until 0000.(midnight) All journeys should serve Horsham Bus Station and Horsham Railway Station. Journeys could connect with fast trains from London Victoria. “To provide the greatest benefit, Wickhurst Green should be served.

Volunteering Opportunities Building Heroes based in Pulborough is a charity which retrains military veterans for a career in the building trades. They rely on fundraising activities to fulfil their vital role in helping ex-service personnel into employment and need enthusiastic, friendly and reliable people to support and increase their activities and to raise the profile of the charity in the local area. If you can help organise fundraising events (e.g. sponsored walk, swim, bake sale, coffee mornings, etc, liase with community groups who may hold fundraising events for them, make phone calls to potential supporters, offer support at existing events (e.g. handing out flyers, providing information, serving drinks) or various other support tasks they would love to hear from you. Are you passionate about your community and want to make a difference? Emerging Futures train individuals to work as part of a coaching team to support their local community. Family recovery coaches help individuals in a family develop their own wellbeing and support system and to make valued life choices. And recovery coaches support individuals to move in to the community from structured treatment, detox, residential rehabilitation and prison. Pulborough and District Community Care Association needs a Wednesday club volunteer to help with activities at its social club for older people, for example short mat bowls, games, bingo, and the occasional outing - all accompanied by tea and cake. The association also needs a telephonist to work from home to take appointments for its Community Transport Service. Carers Support West Sussex needs support group co-facilitators to help provide a confidential space for carers to meet, offload and gain information. They also need telephone support volunteers to help carers share emotions and reduce stress and isolation by providing active listening. And the charity seeks young adult carer engagement volunteers to meet and communicate regularly with young adult carers to support them. If you want to know more about any of the opportunities above or are thinking of volunteering and want to know what’s out there, just log on to www.hamsva.org.uk/opportunities and explore the many ways in which you can get involved in your community. Can you help beat hunger by offering a couple of hours at your local Tesco store on Nov 30 or December 1 or 2? Volunteers are needed to help collect donation at the UK’s largest food drive this Christmas. The collections take place at Tesco stores UK-wide when volunteers are asked to help collect food donations from customers for a few hours in their local store and hand out the FareShare shopping list. In just three hours you could collect enough food to make 600 meals and change someone’s Christmas. Details are available at www.fareshare.org.uk/food-collection where you can also sign up for a shift.

Callum Barney – getting a real lift out of life

Powerlifting Martin Read - Sports Reporter Achieving outstanding results in any activity usually takes years, so Callum Barney’s powerlifting World Championship title is all the more remarkable because as a relative newcomer his first competition was a mere four years ago. But, Cowfold’s 24 year old Callum is completely dedicated to his sport, undergoing a tough training regime six days a week. He is also a strength and conditioning coach including online - trains at Horsham’s Pavilion in the Park and works with Horsham Rugby Club coaches to ensure the safety of players on match days. The International Powerlifting Federation has applied for recognition by the International

Olympic Committee, Powerlifting incorporating three different disciplines – the squat, the bench press and the dead lift to raise the barbell and weights above head height (whereas weighlifting involves snatch, clean and jerk routines). Why did Callum get involved? He explains: “I went along to a gym club but didn’t really enjoy it, so I tried powerlifting. But, I had some eating problems at the time and my weight was fluctuating – at one point I lost 30kg in a year and I was only eating 800 calories a day, so I couldn’t cope with it or the other training I was undertaking. I had become a bit obsessive after the untimely death of a cousin, when I set out to become somebody to be proud of, but, stabilising my weight at 75kg and keeping to a consistent healthy diet has enabled me to

build up my strength, so I’ve stuck with powerlifting and now I’m hooked!” Initially, Callum did not do as well as he had hoped, but that acted as a spur to his determination and, once he was match fit, and had honed his skills he soon went on to win the World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation Championships (WDFPF) in Italy’s Lake Garda. That was after he had set three British records, lifting a combined weight of 585kg, made up of a 200kg squat lift, a 132.5 bench lift and a 252,2kg deadlift. He took the 75kg title for the second time in Boston, USA, when he was also designated the best lifter in the entire event. Clearly, Callum is already very successful, so what are his ambitions? “I’m pleased with my progress so far, but want to break more records – and perhaps open my own gym! Championship events are quite stressful with mounting tension interspersed with a lot of sitting around, but they are what I spend so much time training for and I am so proud when I achieve success.” Callum holds the MSc qualification in sports rehabilitation and is on course towards a masters degree. And, in addition to competing in major events he uses his own experience and techniques of recovery from injuries to work as a rehabilitator and also runs a team of local powerlifters with the goal of coaching them through to success. Inspirational Callum Barney is featured on Facebook, Twitter and You Tube.

England fail to dampen Roffey Cricket Ashes Tour Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey Cricket Club’s Dave Jeal and Mark Pavlovic (Pav) have just returned from their trip to Australia to see some Ashes cricket and despite the disastrous England results, the duos tour was highly enjoyable. They started off in Brisbane and then moved on to Adelaide – the England performances at both venues (and subsequently at Perth) are best not dwelt upon, but that did not dampen the spirits of the intrepid travellers. Roffey has quite a connection with Australia – Aussie Ben Manenti has twice been their overseas player, opener Theo Rivers is currently playing in the Melbourne area and Captain Matt Davies is with the Eton Bunbury Club, south of Perth where Pav visited him, telling the District Post: “Davo is doing well there – averaging over 40 with the bat and doing a bit of coaching, too. The temperature in Perth was 37 degrees – not far short of 100 Celsius! But, it had dropped to around 15 in Adelaide.” In Adelaide Pav and Dave enjoyed wine tours in McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley, while Dave went sea fishing in a charter boat from the West

Beach. They also experienced shooting a handgun at a range, Dave saying: “Colt 45s have a heck of a kick!” Although the cricket was dire for England supporters, Pav and Dave thoroughly enjoyed the Aussie experience, welcoming the excellent atmosphere - especially in the evenings, when Coopers Ale was tested. The pair is heavily involved at Horsham YMCA Football Club, where Dave’s sons play - Aaron is having a good season in goal, while Callum is making his way into the first team. Dave manages the Under 21s with Pav’s assistance and, soon after their return flight they both shrugged off any suggestions of jet lag to rush back to Gorings Mead. Considering England’s on pitch humiliation, would they go abroad to see the team again? Without hesitation both enthused “Yes!” - while the cricket was the incentive to go, there were plenty of other activities to divert from the disappointing outcomes, and, undaunted, they both say that they would love to visit another of England’s cricket destinations. The Roffey flag stands ready to put in another appearance at a distant international ground!

Horsham finish powerfully but had too much to do

Saturday December 23 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 3 4 Thamesmead Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham were soon two goals down, then with 30 minutes left Thamesmead increased their lead, but although the visitors scored again, the Hornets clawed their way back into the game, finishing strongly and coming within an ace of equalising in the dying moments. Horsham have shown that they are capable of beating top sides but the Thamesmead game epitomised their inconsistency –

two silly mistakes in the first 10 minutes left them playing catch up and it was only in the final quarter of the game that they really came into their own, seriously worrying Thamesmead and, so rampant were the Hornets then that had the game gone on for a few more minutes they might well have chalked up a famous victory. Both sides had early corners and Scott Kirkwood, loanee Charlie Harris (from Eastbourne Borough) and Darren Boswell all tested Lewis Carey in the Thamesmead goal, but Thamesmead scored first when Danny Parish headed in a cross from the left. Then, two minutes later, from a corner, Leon Smith’s header was ruled to have

gone in despite protests that it had been cleared. Horsham had two more corners either side of Kirkwood and Jack Hartley firing wide and Harris blazing over, but Thamesmead also came close with a free kick before Tony Nwachukwu, Lewis Hyde, Dean Bown and Hartley all created unfulfilled openings. Horsham’s Matt Boiling, though, had to be alert to deny Parish on two occasions, the first half ending 0-2. Resuming, Nwachukwu’s speed and power began to trouble Thamesmead with his trademark long, probing runs leading to him firing over, Hartley shooting wide and Bown being just unable to latch onto a supply. Yet, it was Thamesmead that found the net

again when the ever-pressing Parish blasted home. However, the game changed when Liam MacDevitt was brought on, enlivening the Hornets, and Nwachukwu promptly ran through and kicked home. At 3-1 down Horsham had a mountain to climb, but although they kept pressing, matters worsened when substitute Scott Kinch lept high to head in Thamesmead’s fourth. All credit to the Hornets, with just 13 minutes of full time remaining they refused to give up and Hakeem Adelakun was rewarded when he headed home a Steve Metcalf cross. Hyde was subsequently off target, but then, with just a minute of full time left, Metcalf converted a Josh

Street corner. Horsham then really put Thamesmead under the cosh, earning free kicks and corners and when Nwachukwu nodded in Hornet fans celebrated a highly unlikely draw, but it was not to be, the referee rightly disallowing the goal because of Horsham’s handball in the box. This was a highly entertaining game, which Horsham, now 16th, could have won had they replicated their final 20 minutes performance throughout the encounter. After being obliged to fly to Guernsey on Boxing Day, Horsham visit Carshalton Athletic (4th) on Saturday before hosting league leaders Lewes on New Year’s Day.

Happy Hornets put Guernsey to flight Tuesday December 26 – The Bostik League – South Division Guernsey 1 3 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Boxing Day fixtures are traditionally local derbies (Horsham YMCA played Broadbridge Heath on the 27th), so the eccentric idea of Horsham having to make a 320 mile flight, the early morning departure requiring some of the more distantly located players to leave home at 5.30am and get back there in the dead of night, presented a major challenge to

the club. Hats off to Horsham’s players, officials and supporters for responding magnificently, coming home with all three points, as they had done against Guernsey last season. When Horsham’s attempts to have the game moved on a day failed, Secretary Jeff Barrett and Manager Dom di Paola worked unstintingly to ensure that the fixture was fulfilled - a credit to the club. One rationale for the fixture was because Horsham is near Gatwick. Visits to Guernsey are to be savoured, especially in spring, and although Shoreham doesn’t have quite the same romantic ring for

a Boxing Day game, it is only 5 miles away from Lancing! In squally conditions at Footes Lane, St Peters Port, Guernsey were presented with the first opportunity after Skillen was brought down, but Tom de la Mare’s free kick passed comfortably wide. Then Liam MacDevitt fired straight at the home keeper before skipper Scott Kirkwood’s corner collected by Darren Boswell went on to Tony Nwachukwu for the Hornets first goal. It might have quickly got better for the visitors but MacDevitt was just unable to convert. It was, though, Guernsey who scored next when

de la Mare levelled. The Hornets then had a golden opportunity to retake the lead, but, after being fouled, Nwachukwu’s spot kick was off target, leaving the score at 1-1 at the break. Guernsey came back out fighting and Horsham were indebted to goalkeeper Brannon Daly for nullifying Skillen’s strike. Substitute Tony House soon got in a shot, which rebounded to Kirkwood, whose attempt was pushed away for a corner, latched onto by Boswell and put into the net to restore Horsham’s lead as the heavens opened. The greasy ball was now causing handling

difficulties, but Daly kept Guernsey forays at bay – twice. With the Hornets looking to put the game beyond Guernsey’s reach, a good build up enabled Josh Street to supply Nwachukwu who made no mistake. Guernsey had a final opportunity to reduce the deficit but their radar was faulty, Horsham running out well-deserved 3-1 winners. Tomorrow (Saturday) the Hornets travel to 5th placed Carshalton Athletic and then on New Year’s Day they have another tough assignment, when they entertain leaders Lewes at Lancing.
