Horsham Football Club wins long battle for new ground DAVE SMITH
Sports Editor
Horsham Football Club is celebrating one of its most important victories in its long history after councillors approved plans for its new ground. This time their win was in the council “chamber” as the north planning committee of Horsham District Council gave the go-ahead to two applications crucially tied to each other and the future of the club. The councillors gave almost unanimous approval for both the separate ground and housing applications, though the housing provoked long discussion and some objections. The club’s Life President Frank King told the Post on Tuesday evening: “It’s absolutely fantastic and I’m thrilled to bits. At long last we can now move forward”. Andy Meadus of Horsham FC Supporters Club said: “I wasn’t expecting such a strong vote in favour after some of the negative comments made at the meeting, so I’m pleasantly shocked. It’s great news.”
The Ryman League South club, formed in 1898, said the new ground was desperately needed for its survival. It had already won backing from professional planners on the district council who had recommended approval of both schemes, but needed the go-ahead from councillors. The first application approved was for the new ground and was for Horsham Golf and Fitness, Worthing Road, Southwater and the Holbrook Club, North Heath Lane, Horsham. It was for a 3G Football Ground, including main pitch and training pitch, clubhouse, stands, access, parking and landscaping to serve as the home ground for Horsham Football Club. The second application approved was for housing at playing fields at Holbrook Club, North Heath Lane, Horsham, crucial to the funding of the new ground scheme. 58 homes are to be built. Both applications were made by the club and Reside Developments. Kevin Borrett the club’s chairman said: “ I am delighted. The club had worked extremely hard to explain the benefits of both proposals and respond to concerns, so I couldn’t be happier with the outcome”

Walking back to happiness on pavements Walkers should be feeling the benefit as West Sussex Highways completes the first year of its £5 million Even Better Pavements programme. The dozens of road that have seen pavement surfacing include some in Horsham area; Kings Road and Lintott Gardens, Millthorpe Road, Redford Avenue, Eyles Close, Bluebell Close, Oaks Close, Merryfield Drive, Kentwyns Drive, Saxon Crescent, St Leonards Road, Wimblehurst Road, Bedford Road and Arthur Road. The County Council targeted pavements and footways most used by vulnerable residents to protect them from slips, trips and falls. Pavements which serve schools, clinics, hospitals and areas with high footfall, were prioritised. It was the first year of a twoyear programme that is costing £5 million. £2 million was spent on the Even Better Pavements programme in 2016/17. In all 85 locations across Bognor Regis, Burgess Hill, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Horsham, Lanc-
ing and Selsey were improved. A further £3 million will be spent in 2017/18. The West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Bob Lanzer, said: “We are delighted the first year of our programme has been delivered on time and on budget. “Our investment has made pavements and footways in the locations we have been to smoother and safer. “While this work has been ongoing, behind the scenes we have been prioritising and organising the locations in the county to focus on in 2017/18. “We shall be announcing this list shortly.” Anyone who notices damaged or missing paving slabs, or any other footway damage, can report them online via www.lovewestsussex. gov.uk. Or download the Love West Sussex phone app free for i-Phone, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry to report it that way. Pictured is Millthorpe Road, Horsham before and after the work.

Selfless Emily captures Royal selfie Continued from front page
Emily (right) with Prince Harry in background Teacher Emily Cox caught Prince Harry on her selfie at a marathon training day for charity. The chance snap came after Emily joined the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry for a
marathon training day at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. Emily, who only took up running in August, gained her place in the London Marathon through the ballot and decided to raise money
for the marathon’s charity of the year which is Heads Together. It is a campaign to get people talking about mental health and is made up of eight charities. The charity Emily will be raising money for specifically is The Mix, which is a charity for the under 25’s. Emily, who is a science and maths teacher at Farlington School, Horsham, said: “Back in August I was definitely not a runner so I have gone from not running to, hopefully, completing a marathon and I hoped that by recording my running journey, it might inspire others to take on a challenge of their own.” The Royals joined training sessions on the new London Marathon Community Track with more than 150 Team Heads Together runners along with world-record holder and three time London Marathon winner, Paula Radcliffe, and British 400m record holder and London Marathon regular, Iwan Thomas. All of the Team Heads Together runners donned Heads Together head bands whilst training. Heads Together is encouraging everyone running in this year’s race, whichever great cause they are supporting, to make it a ‘mental health marathon.’ Paula Radcliffe and Iwan Thomas also gave advice and encouragement to the assembled Heads Together runners on training and preparation. Emily’s giving page is http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ecox which has links to the Heads Together and The Mix websites.
Happy John Lines after historic decision
John Lines, chief executive officer of the club, said after the decision:”I’m speechless - it’s an emotional night for me, but, I’d first like to thank all of our loyal supporters for helping us to achieve what we needed”. Cllr Billy Greening said: “I’m very happy with the decision made tonight that will benefit Horsham Football Club, The Holbrook Club and the community in general. The decision is especially important for the young people who will benefit from these facilities for many years to come” Councillors were told The Holbrook Club was relying on the provision of the 3G pitches at Horsham Golf and Fitness to compensate for the loss of playing fields for housing. And building of the new ground
for Horsham Football Club s depended on the money from the housing development at the Holbrook Site. More than 200 objections were lodged, including fears over dangerous access and traffic congestion from a park and ride scheme, and the Stammerham Amenity Association lodged nine objections. But the club was delighted to win the day at Tuesday’s meeting. The club, known as the Hornets, has been without a home of its own for nearly a decade since it left its old Queen Street site, the scene of many triumphs when it was one of the strongest and best supported sides in Sussex. It currently shares a ground with Horsham YMCA Football Club.

Mr Quin gets down to business Mr Quin and hosts
Suzanne Travers Marketing Manager
Creating new jobs was the theme as business people met Jeremy Quin, MP for Horsham. Mr Quin visited Seofon Business Services in Horsham to find out more about the company and also about the Business Launchpad workshops which co-owner Chris Cooper, together with Web Clarity’s Marie Allen and business coach Jenny Edwards are running in Horsham. After Mr. Quin met Seofon’s directors and staff and talked about his interest in supporting new and existing businesses, business scene nationally and internationally, and the challenges and opportunities for Horsham businesses. The Business Launchpad
workshops provide support for both dealing with the challenges in running a business and being able to take full advantage of the opportunities. The Launchpad workshops are aimed at startup businesses and also those who may have been operating for a couple of years or so. The aim is to provide a solid foundation for business growth, an opportunity to connect with other local businesses, and ongoing support as participants increase in size and scope. The workshops are informative while remaining informal and friendly as the aim is to make it easy even for those who may have had little or no formal business training.
The Launchpad workshops are being held at Horsham Coworking, conveniently situated in the middle of the town, and are very competitively priced to allow even the newest start-ups to participate. The charge for the full day is just £45 including lunch. They are not-for-profit, but any surplus will be donated to Horsham Coworking to grow this very worthwhile initiative. As the Launchpad aims to be accessible to everyone, even the newest start-up this workshop is being held on a Saturday. The next one is being held on March 25 and details can be found on Facebook and on the websites of the individual providers.

From 10.30am until about 4pm Steyning is set to welcome back the French Market, with traders crossing the Channel to bring all things “Francais”, including temptations such as French regional cheeses, freshly baked bread, a range of patisserie products, olives, French sausages and cooked meats, strings of garlic and crepes with a variety of fillings cooked on the spot plus other hot take-away dishes. The non-foodie stalls will include handbags, hats, scarves, jewellery, French posters, giftware, clothing, Provencal soaps and other products. At 2 pm the roar of super cars will once again hit the High Street, when exotic Italian machines such as Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini, with and a smattering of other marques, will blast into town, resting for 45 minutes to give time for some serious drooling over the fantastic engines.
Organsiers say these cars are some of the superb examples that will be on show during the Horsham Piazza Italia X Festival, which is held over the Easter weekend in Horsham Town Centre, but Steyning is having a special preview. They said: “Why not make a day of it and enjoy

Jeremy will finish what he starts
The whole event is run entirely by volunteers and raises a lot of money for charity and also makes significant donations to various groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village who help with the staging of the race. This year’s official charity for the event is St Catherine’s Hospice. Commenting on the involvement of Mr Quin, Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings said, “We are thrilled that Jeremy has agreed to be involved. It is always a great boost to us to have the support of our local MP. We are even more delighted that he is going to get doubly involved acting as the of-
ficial starter for the Barns Green Half Marathon and taking part in the second running of our 10kilometre race. It’s a unique double which shows what a good sport he is. I believe the race day is also his birthday so we will certainly have a cake ready for him at the finish line. I just hope he will have enough puff left to blow out all the candles”. Mr Quin said: “I am delighted to be able to support this truly unique local event. The Barns Green Half Marathon has made a huge contribution to the local community over the past 35 years. I will now need to get into training for the 10km race to which I am looking forward”. Last year almost 1800 runners registered for the Half Marathon and 10k races which follow routes on closed roads through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. This year, the Christ’s Hospital School marching band will once again be playing while all the runners go through the grounds of the school during the race. For further details on how to take part in the race visit the Barns Green Half Marathon website; barnsgreen-half.org.uk
Big council tax rise for Southwater Villagers at Southwater will pay 20 per cent more for their parish council services from April. The rise in its slice of council tax has been agreed by Southwater Parish Council for the new financial year. The Parish Council’s element of the council tax will increase from £77.25 for a Band D property in 2016/17 to £93.30 for 2017/18 which equates to a total of £1.79 per week per household. Councillor Graham Watkins, chairman of Southwater Parish Council said: “These are challenging financial times and during the last three years the Council has used its Reserves to support the budget to keep the Council Tax increase between 3-5% and it can no longer do this. “Southwater Parish Council no longer receives the Revenue Support Grant from Horsham District Council and has also had to factor in a business rate increase, the 20.77% increase relates to an increase of £0.31 per week.
“However Southwater Parish Council is proud of the services it currently delivers, managing four community buildings, significant land holdings and keeps the village litter free. “The Parish Council staffing levels are consistent with that of other larger Local Authorities to meet the needs and deliver the community’s aspirations for the future. “The Team is working hard to deliver a community vision, to develop a Neighbourhood Plan, enhance the community building provision and leisure facilities and undertake a complete review of the Southwater Leisure Centre. There will also be a focus on working more closely with the community and local businesses by improving the Councils website”. Villagers will also have to pay the county council, district council and police share of the overall council tax, which is collected by Horsham District Council on their behalf.

Horsham MP Jeremy Quin will finish what he starts in his dual role at the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races. Fitness fan Mr Quin will be on a podium with a claxon to act as the official starter for the Barns Green Half Marathon which starts at 10am. Then he will get into his running gear and will take part in the 10km event which starts a few minutes later at 10.20am. The event will take place on September 24 and will be the 35th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the second year of the new 10 kilometre race which was introduced for the first time last year.

Students scored a success rate of almost 100 per cent as the first Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award ceremony at The Weald School at Billingshurst was staged. The event drew more than 150 students, members of the community and parents. David Longmore from The West Sussex County Duke of Edinburgh Department made a speech congratulating the students and presented the awards. This year they had the highest ever completion rate with 97% of students achieving their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Esther Mead, the award’s coordinator at The Weald, said: “It
was a fantastic group of students to work with who all performed exceptionally well under very testing conditions. I look forward to seeing them achieve the Silver Award next year”. Students had to undertake a challenging set of tasks, some involved enduring sub-zero temperatures and torrential rainfall. Peter Woodman, head teacher at The Weald, said: “I’m really pleased to see so many students take the opportunity to succeed in completing the award. They have worked extremely hard and should be very proud of themselves, it is a great achievement.”
Welcomed with warning A £25 million contribution to ease social care pressures in West Sussex has been welcomed with a warning. West Sussex County Council says the money will not solve a long-term problem. The cash injection follows lobbying by the council to Government including two letters from the County Council Leader, Louise Goldsmith, to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Sajid Javid. Cllr Goldsmith said: “This additional funding will not solve the long term challenges we face at a national and local level but it will ensure that we are able to now spend time looking for longer terms solutions as we are able to deal with the immediate financial pressures we face. “Without doubt we face enormous challenges in the delivery of frontline services but we will continue to work closely with partners in the NHS and voluntary sector to deliver high quality, sustainable services. We will continue to innovate and improve to support older and vulnerable
people to live well and independently in their communities for as long as possible.” The money is the county’s share of an additional £2billion in grant funding over the next three years announced in the budget by the Chancellor Philip Hammond earlier this week. Cllr Goldsmith said: “We welcome this additional, much needed £25million funding for
This additional funding will not solve the long term challenges we face at a national and local level adult social care. “The County Council united collectively across all political parties to ask the Government to recognise the growing social care challenges being faced in our community and the Government has listened.”

Class of 2017 ready for action Drivers in court on
mobile phone charges
The magnificent seven The first new part-time firefighters of 2017 are ready to respond to emergencies from residents and firms. The new recruits were presented with their certificates by West Sussex Fire Rescue Service Head of Operations, Kieran Amos, at a passing out parade at Worthing fire station, which marked the successful completion of an intensive two-week initial training course. The seven firefighters will now be posted to stations to respond to emergencies when needed and continue their professional development. The latest recruits are Marc Haywood, Charlie Welling, George Petrie, Jack Magee, Ryan Hek, Sam
Tomlin and Adam Butler. Head of Training, Development and Assurance, Jon Simpson, said: “Recruiting retained firefighters is a continuing challenge for fire services across the country, so it goes without saying we are delighted to welcome our newest recruits. There is no doubt these firefighters will make a difference in their communities, not only in responding to emergencies but also through their prevention and safety work, which makes up a large percentage of a modern firefighter’s role.” Retained firefighters are men and women who combine their day jobs or duties with being “on call” for the fire service, ready to respond to emergencies when
they are needed. They also play an important role in community engagement activities. They are vital to the delivery of the county’s fire and rescue service and receive regular training to equip them with the skills they need to deal with fires, road traffic collisions and a wide range of other emergencies. Retained firefighters receive an annual retaining fee as well as additional payments for any incidents or community safety events they attend. To find out more about being a retained firefighter in West Sussex you can watch a short film at http://ow.ly/ikU93072uzr or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire.
Drivers face court after being the first in Sussex to be prosecuted for using a mobile phone while driving since new penalties were introduced. Police have spoken about their disappointment that people are taking risks despite highly publicised increases in penalties. From 1 March drivers caught using a mobile phone when driving will receive six penalty points on their licence as well as a fine. Two drivers were stopped on South Coast Road in Peacehaven. One was seen with his phone in his hand as he used it as a “sat nav” and will appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on March 21. Police also stopped another man who as well as using his phone, was found to be driving without insurance. He will appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on March 24. On the same day officers stopped a 70-year-old woman after she was seen using her mobile phone as she drove along Falmer Road, Rottingdean. She will appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on March 21. Officers also stopped a 50-year-old as he used his phone while driving along Malling Hill in Lewes, not far from where Sussex headquarters is based. He will appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court March 24. Sergeant Phil
Badman from the Roads Policing Unit said: “It is extremely disappointing to see that people are still taking the risk of using their mobile phone while driving. They are not only putting themselves at risk but also the lives of other road users and pedestrians. “There is no typical offender for this crime type as these two stops show with people of all ages committing offences. I would like to remind all drivers that no call is so important that it can’t wait until you’ve reached your destination and that if you’re using your phone as a Sat Nav it should be set before you begin your journey.” For more information on road safety, please visit the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) website: http://www.sussexsaferroads.gov.uk/. SSRP is a partnership led by Sussex Police, and includes East and West Sussex Fire & Rescue Services, East and West Sussex County Councils, Brighton & Hove City Council and Highways England.

Young netted a haul for a charity with their fish-themed fund raiser. St. John’s primary school in Horsham staged the raffle as part of the aid agency CAFOD’s them of “turning small fish into big fish”. Raffle tickets were sold for £1 each with the winning child’s class sponsoring a dolphin for a year and pupils across all years got involved. The fishy fundraiser raised more than £330 and their efforts will help provide communities across the world with the means to feed their families, by helping families to receive

Toria Bono, the head teacher at St. John’s, said: “I am incredibly proud of the work that our children do to support those less fortunate around the world. Our mission at St. John’s is to help all our children learn to love and love to learn. “The children are so keen to live out their mission to show love to others and the story they heard of a Zambian woman and her

Another school gets safety camera Youngsters at Billingshurst Primary School are to be protected from bad drivers . The school is the latest to equip its School Crossing Patrol person with a body camera. West Sussex Highways is encouraging schools to use body cameras to stop ‘drive throughs’ and abusive behaviour outside school gates. West Sussex does not pay the £150 cost of the camera, which has to be raised by the school. The cameras are worn across the chest to capture audio and video footage of motorists driving dangerously, or being abusive towards School Crossing Patrols, as they help children and parents across the road. Trials have already proved successful at Camelsdale Primary School near Haslemere and Harlands Primary School in Haywards Heath. Now Billingshurst Primary School is the third to take part. The West Sussex County Council’s School Crossing Patrol Manager, Louise Bishop, said: “These body cameras are having the desired results whenever they are worn. “Evidence is showing us that speeds are slowing and outbursts of foul language and
abuse are disappearing – all because drivers are aware they are caught on camera. “For the price of £150, it is becoming one of the most cost-effective ways a school can improve safety for their children and parents outside the school gates.” It is an offence to drive past a School Crossing Patrol when they are in the road. If caught the offender will receive a fine and three points on their licence, the same they would receive for driving through a red light. The camera records every shift a School Crossing Patrol works. If footage is captured of an offence, it is passed onto Sussex Police to consider as evidence for prosecution. If nothing of note happens, the memory card is wiped. West Sussex County Council puts up temporary signs outside the school warning offending motorists they are on camera. Anyone interested in arranging a camera for a School Crossing Patrol outside their school can contact Louise Bishop on 033022 26744 or email louise.bishop@westsussex.gov.uk

Pupils praised for their spirit
Pupils impressed school inspectors with their social attitude as well as their willingness to learn. The Farlington School children won particular praised for the strong spiritual awareness among them. Inspectors noted after visiting the Horsham school that: “Pupils have a clear understanding of moral values and behaviour, and the relationships within the school reflect this; pupils are kind and thoughtful and enjoy taking responsibility.” The school described the report as a very positive response from Independent Schools Inspectorate. Earlier this year Farlington was among one of the first schools to be inspected under the new regime where the inspection is split into two parts, called Focused

Compliance and Educational Quality. Louise Higson, Farlington’s headmistress, said: “We are delighted with the inspection report. It demonstrates the positive learning and personal development that is undertaken by pupils at Farlington, supported by our dedicated staff. It shows that we achieve our aim of encouraging self-confidence and a positive attitude to learning by developing strong core skills throughout the age groups. We were commended for the girls’ excellent behaviour and the social integration of boarders.” Inspectors highlighted the school’s good academic standards and wide ranging achievements in and out of the classroom, as well as the supportive partnership with parents, and the pupils’
significant contribution to the life of the school community and beyond. The girls’ personal development was deemed excellent. Farlington was recognised as a school where “pupils achieve excellent standards and successes in varied individual and group activities in music, drama and sport.” Inspectors praised the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): “Children develop good skills in all areas, and excellent speaking and listening, creative and imaginative development. These skills are nurtured, in particular, through outdoor learning, which enables children to take risks and have adventures whilst learning to keep themselves safe in a secure environment.” Other areas of school work were also praised.
Maths kids total success Scoring 171 out of 180 marks added up to success for youngsters from a Horsham school in a maths challenge. The Holbrook Primary children emerged winners from Year 4 pupils from 32 schools from across Sussex in a contest hosted by Christ’s Hospital. Holbrook notched up the day’s highest score. The challenge was divided into two sessions called Hexagons and Nonagons. The children moved through six different tasks, which took 75 mins to complete, namely Dicey Dicey, What Next? Make 24, Dominoes, Fruit Alpha and Tangrams. The competition was strong amongst the promising mathematicians with Southwater Junior Academy taking first prize in the ‘Hexagons’ section with Lancing
College Prep, Handcross Primary and Seaside Primary close runnersup. Holbrook Primary School, Horsham, won the ‘Nonagons’, with Jessie Younghusband Primary School, Brighton and Hove Prep and Westbourne House hot on their heels. All the children received a certificate of participation and a Christ’s Hospital maths challenge badge, and, in addition, the winners received a calculator. Douglas Buchanan, the challenge creator and presenter said: “Congratulations to all the pupils who took part. The challenge is tough and takes lots of concentration. The children worked diligently and they always enjoy the competitive edge. It was also such a pleasure to return to Christ’s Hospital this term.”

Charlie’s documentary set for Wembley Charlie in India
A 17-year-old will have his documentary film given a trailer at Wembley Arena. Charlie Doherty made his powerful 20-minute documentary ‘ME to WE’ on location in India
through the charity ‘ME to WE’, which aims aim to end world poverty. Charlie, currently studying Film, Media and Photography A-Levels at Collyer’s, said: “My passion is
in film making of all kinds and my ambition is to create a full length feature film. Last year I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship trip to help build a school in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, through a charity named ME and WE, which aims to help end world poverty. “While there I tried to combine my passion for helping others by filming the experience”. In his spare time in India, Charlie organised several interviews with the local people to help gain an insight into life in India and the great work being done by the charity. He began to develop a thought-provoking documentary about ME and WE combating the many issues in India. Charlie says he hopes that the documentary will raise awareness about the thriving charity and the great work they are doing to help those in need. Charlie said: “The documentary is due to have its trailer premiered at the ME to WE annual charitable event held at Wembley Arena. “It is a privilege to have worked alongside such an incredible charity and to not only have helped them first hand whilst in India, but also bring the story back to the UK by doing what I love, by creating a documentary that I had put all my time into.” Charlie now hopes to release his documentary on YouTube by midApril.

Horsham’s Kitchen Store-The window of opportunity
Business Martin Read - Reporter The Kitchen Store in Horsham’s East Street has just celebrated the first anniversary of trading in the town and they are delighted to be here! Managing Director Alan Margetts told the District Post: “We’re really pleased how the first year has gone! There is always some apprehension when starting something new, but a year in we’re very happy and customers are saying that they like what we’re doing. We feel comfortable being in Horsham – it is a pleasant place for us to be and our staff enjoys working here. We think that we’re in tune with our customers, but we’re not complacent so we’ll keep working hard to ensure that we continue to do a good job!” A visit to the store is a captivating experience – looking through the window
gives a good impression of what is on offer, but it is only half the story - inside there is display after creative display of fully equipped, full sized kitchens. The contemporary equipment includes ovens, hobs, fridge freezers and there are copious examples of materials available for worktops, ranging from Corian composites and granites to solid timber worktops and a comprehensive variety of laminates. There are also many cabinets, handles and wall options to choose from. New customers are encouraged to have a good look around the displays to get a flavour of what might be achievable in their home, Kitchen Store Manager Catherine (Cat) Scopes emphasising: “We encourage customers to take as much time as they need to browse in our relaxed environment and offer them the option to come into the store with their own brief. Or, alternatively
we visit their home to measure up and provide a full service of inspirational design and installation to suit every style of kitchen, large or small, through to final inspection and sign off, project managing from start to finish.”
We encourage customers to take as much time as they need to browse in our relaxed environment Cat has a design background, enjoys dealing with people and, like her colleague and Designer Sam Sheppard, has also worked at the
company’s stores in Lancing and Hove, saying: “What I particularly like is that we support local businesses, from Lancing’s royal warrant appointed Paula Rosa and Manhattan kitchen furniture to our trusted nearby glaziers and stonemasons and our own dedicated team of Fira Gold awarded designers and installers.” Sam adding: “We’re a good team and have been very well received in Horsham - and we’re getting enquiries and orders from quite far afield, even including London.” Horsham’s independently owned and run Kitchen Store are in the quality market but are competitively priced because they deal direct with their local manufacturer and take great pride in their much coveted professional reputation, rightly earning them hard won industry and business awards and customer accolades, as confirmed

by feedback on the website. Cat adds: “We’re always thrilled to get orders through recommendations, that really does assure us that we’re on the right track. The other thing we appreciate is being part of the local community – again this year we’ll be a silver sponsor at Horsham’s iconic Piazza Italia event and we’re really looking forward to that!” Horsham’s Kitchen Store’s modern East Street building lends itself to showcasing beautiful kitchens and new and existing customers are guaranteed to receive a warm welcome from Cat and Sam to share in their infectious enthusiasm and enjoyment in delivering a stunning individual design for their home. Wisdom of a Fool The Critically acclaimed emotional rollercoaster one-man play returns to Horsham’s Capitol Theatre. Jack Lane takes the audience behind Norman Wisdom’s well-known character to reveal a tough lonely childhood. After joining the army, Norman discovers a passion for comedy and begins to perfect an act that would go on to shape his unique style. The world of post-war Music Hall and Variety embraces Nor-
man’s manic slapstick routine, catapulting him to stardom in the early 1950s. Success on the silver screen, including the hit song ‘Don’t Laugh at Me’, seals his fame. But fame comes at a price. Performance: Friday 31 March, 7.30pm - Saturday 1 April, 2.30pm and 7.30pm, The Capitol Theatre. Tickets: £17.00 - £18.50, available from Box Office: 01403 750220 or by visiting: www.thecapitolhorsham

5 factors landlords must consider before picking the perfect investment property
propertypurchaseBuying to let has never been so popular, with high tenant demand and
rising rents providing investors with an opportunity to enjoy a regular and reliable
extra income. Allison Thompson, managing director at property specialist Leaders, says: “Despite the tax changes for landlords due to come into effect on 1st April, recent research shows buy-to-let is still the best investment option in terms of overall return. “Rental demand for all types of properties is already at an alltime high and experts predict that up to a quarter of all households in the UK will be renting by 2025. “As such, it is no surprise that investors remain extremely keen on property. But that is not to say every home presents a lucrative investment opportunity, so prospective landlords must do their homework to ensure a property will deliver the return
they are looking for.” Allison has identified five factors every landlord should look for in a property before buying to let. 1) Local employment opportunities Quality tenants will be attracted to homes either close to or with easy access to their places of work. So consider where big businesses are based or areas with a number of local employers and look to buy there. 2) Excellent transport links Proximity to a rail station or the motorway network will make a home more appealing to people who need to travel for work, family or social commitments. Avoid those remote areas that are notoriously difficult to reach and instead focus on investing in a well-connected part of town. 3) Quality of housing With tenants staying in one place for longer, they typically look for quality properties that can be a home to be proud of. Therefore properties which are maintained to a high standard will achieve higher rents and benefit from longer tenancies
..experts predict that up to a quarter of all households in the UK will be renting by 2025 and fewer voids. So, either look to buy a high-quality property or refurbish one to a high standard. 4) Attractive local amenities Areas with plenty to offer will naturally appeal to tenants. Look for homes that are close to shops, pubs, restaurants, schools and entertainment facilities, all of which can draw people to an area. Not only could this increase demand for your property, it is also likely to push sales prices up in the coming years. 5) Meeting local demand Working out who you are aiming to let to and buying a property to suit is a must. If you want to take advantage of a large local student population, investing in a house with four or five bedrooms is a shrewd move. Similarly, if a town is popular with young professionals, buying a stylish apartment is wise. Allison adds: “There is plenty to consider when buying to let and understanding local demand can lead you to the perfect property. Working with a local lettings expert such as Leaders can provide insight into this and ensure you invest in a property that delivers the return you are looking for.” Get your buy-to-let project started today by visiting Leaders’ Property Investment Hub – a dedicated portal featuring available investment properties and, in many cases, full rental histories.

Southwater Academy through to National Finals Junior Football After winning the Sussex Finals back in December Southwater Junior Academy’s football team competed in the ESFA SouthEast Regional Finals, held in South London at Thamesmead FC. Playing against four other schools, all winners of their
county championships, Southwater recovered well after losing their first game by winning 2 and drawing 1, of the remaining 3 games. In the semi-final playing against Cleeves School from Surrey the game ended 0-0 and had to be settled by penalties, the SJA boys held their nerves and emerged as 5-3 winners. This win meant that
SJA was guaranteed a place at the National Finals, regardless of the result in the final. The final also went to penalties, but this time SJA couldn’t quite get the job done, losing 4-3 against the school representing Essex. The team now go to the National Finals in Doncaster to be held in the coming weeks.

Another brilliant Woolley hat trick in big Horsham win Horsham’s John Burroughs
South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 4 - 1 Milton Keynes Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Rampant Ellis Woolley’s second successive hat trick enabled Horsham to swamp lack lustre Milton Keynes, confirming league survival, the team believe, following favourable results elsewhere.
The opposition arrived with a numerically limited squad and were not at their strongest but they were well beaten by strident Horsham. Good early Horsham build ups resulted in a sixth minute short corner conversion by Woolley before a second short ended with John Burroughs hitting the post. Horsham were calling the shots and Zak Chinn crashed in impressively mid-way through the half. MK did have two innocuously taken shorts and Andy Isaacs was called on to
deny them, but Horsham were in the ascendancy. An early second half MK short was deflected clear, then a long Burroughs hit was pushed home by Woolley. Five minutes later, against the run of play, MK did manage to score and Isaacs later made a prostrate save and knocked away a firm strike, but that was the last opposition endeavour. Woolley retaliated, breaking through only to see his strong hit averted and the cross from a typically thrusting Burroughs run was unfulfilled before speedy Joey Humphreys’ incursion also escaped finalisation. Horsham, though, were not done – their third short corner was converted by Woolley to round off a commanding 4-1 victory, Team Manager Al Campbell saying: “We thoroughly deserved to win! Although they’re seventh, above us, MK are puzzling to play because they don’t mount many attacks and just sit in. We should have beaten them over there, but that was in our undisciplined period – reducing us to nine men at one point. It was a shame that we conceded a silly goal today but we wanted three points and are very happy with that. We couldn’t buy a goal early season but just lately we’ve had a surfeit, Ellis taking over from Jack Dean as our top scorer.”
Attacking Horsham held to a draw
Horsham’s Sam Stares South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 1 - 1 Wimbledon 1A Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter
A draw did not reflect Horsham possession – especially in the second half – or the number of their attacks, but it is goals that count. After Wimbledon scored in the sixth minute when the ball was fired across and tapped into an open goal Horsham responded positively. Alex Malzer launched the first of a number of her trademark long runs and a Louisa Denman shot went past the post before further impressive build ups earned two short corners. A Horsham goal was just a question of time and came in the 20th minute when a Malzer strike rebounded to Charlotte “CJ” White to crack home, levelling the score. Sam Stares then attacked ahead of a rare Wimbledon foray culminating in them shooting well wide in a one on one opportunity. The first half ended amid persistent Horsham pressure featuring a Denman solo attack, a third short corner and White’s shot evading goal. On resumption Horsham
gained two more short corners but strikes went straight to the busy, outstanding Wimbledon keeper, and Lauren Burroughs’ then fired over. A Wimbledon short was blocked on the line and they were defending well, too, but with few exceptions it was all hard-scrapping Horsham, with shots aplenty. Late Wimbledon frustration resulted in Horsham’s fifth short corner but the points were shared. The song says the Wombles are organised and work as a team but that description belonged to seventh placed Horsham and on another day with a little more accuracy they would have scored numerous goals. Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “We were so much better than them but we just couldn’t score – if we can put that right and play in the same way next week then we can beat Surbiton again when we go there for our final league game of the season (tomorrow, Saturday).” Horsham memorably beat third in the table Surbiton 4-1 at home in November.

Horsham clinch all important win South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 2 - 1 Guildford Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pretty it wasn’t, but Horsham got three points and at the business end of the campaign that was all that really mattered. This season Horsham did the double over top of the table Havant, a feat only matched by runners up Bromley & Beckenham, yet they have often seemed to find it difficult against teams well down the table. Bottom club Guildford have been this season’s whipping boys with just one win and a draw from 21 starts, during which they have scored just 15 goals and conceded 103. Horsham beat them 4-1 in Surrey in October but on Sunday, although Guildford threatened little, the margin was much closer. Horsham led 1-0 at the break, courtesy of Mark Humphreys’ first touch of the ball in this league. On the restart Sam Gill immediately put Horsham further ahead, striking while on
all fours. Then, with Horsham’s defence wide open, Guildford promptly reduced the deficit with the softest of goals. Both keepers made saves and Horsham had three short corners and several strong build ups but the uncharacteristically dull game ended with Horsham 2-1 to the good, Team Manager Al Campbell telling us: “We were a bit tired from yesterday and their keeper played well, but we made heavy weather of it, finding motivation difficult after retaining our place in the league.” Hockey relegation is variable (depending on the outcomes and locations of leagues feeding into the National Division) with a minimum of one and a maximum of four teams going down, but the current prediction – usually accurate – is that two teams will be relegated. Horsham are uncatchable in ninth spot, but could leapfrog London Wayfarers into eighth position. Tomorrow, Saturday, Horsham travel to play tenth team Henley, to whom they lost 3-4 at home in December. Guildford are doomed, probably to be joined by Banbury, currently 11th.
Hawks’ teams record good wins Basketball Dave Snith - Sports Editor U14 Horsham Hawks 86 – 66 U14 SRWA Bears The U14 Hawks secured their ninth win in thirteen games against Lancing based, SRWA Bears in a battle between the third and fourth placed teams in the Sussex League. Horsham began by scoring eleven straight points without reply resulting in eight early points for Josh Tavolieri. As Horsham continued to apply pressure Josh Lea-Clayton converted back to back three point baskets while Harry Rose and Fin Bennett found the Bears basket extending the Hawks lead to 30-13 midway through the second quarter. A five minute cold patch by Horsham allowed the visiting Bears an opportunity to get back into the game as they went on a 14-9 run narrowing the deficit to 39-27 at the half. A close 22-21 third quarter saw both teams battling hard with Oliver Brooker opening his scoring account and Charlotte Willcox finishing in spectacular fashion. In the fourth quarter the Hawks took control of the contest winning the period 25-14 as Anaya Wakefield and Willcox both converted well and Horsham’s Bennett and Miguel

Venturini continued to prove difficult to stop. Next up for the Hawks is a rematch of last year’s Sussex Cup final as the reigning champions face the league leaders, Crawley. U16 Eastbourne Lions 40 – 87 U16 Horsham Hawks Although dominating possession from the beginning, Hawks were uncharacteristically wasteful spurning numerous opportunities to build a big lead in the opening quarter, finishing just ahead 12-10. The second quarter began with Hawks much more effective and a 19-2 run effectively ended Lions’ hopes with Kieran Lee scoring 8 consecutive points. Josh Raby and James Maclean added to the growing tally before George Makin chipped in with a pair of free throws and Jamie Miller added his name to the growing list of scorers leaving Hawks comfortably ahead 40-17 at half time. The second half saw some uncustomary Hawks ball-handling errors, but the positives easily out-weighed the negatives as Q3 saw Hawks outscore their hosts 24-11 including a brace of 3 pointers from Tommy Strange. The pattern continued in the final period and Hawks cruised to an easy 87-40 victory that sees them remain in the play-off positions.

Horsham won through to their fourth successive Bob Rogers Cup Final chael Tredgett’s try just ahead of half time. Chichester who play in the equivalent Zoo League, converted a try but Horsham led 29-7 at the break. The second half was different, Chichester adding 35 points. But, tries from Joe Wilde converted by Johnson - and Andy Carvell - kicked over by Wilde, plus Wilde’s last gasp penalty saw Horsham win by 46-42. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “We were looking good at the interval, yet for some reason slowed down and stopped executing. But, we scored six tries, so I’m happy with that – and it’s great to be in another final!” The game might be Matt Stones’ last for Horsham 1st XV, he said: “I first took the field
here as a five year old, 31 years ago, and I’m lucky to have played with some amazing people, my closest friends.” But, he hinted to the District Post that the lure of another big game might prove too strong to ignore! Horsham meet Hove again in the final, at East Grinstead on May 27, having beaten them at the seaside in September’s league game but subsequently losing to them at home. Hove are seventh, one place behind Horsham. Meanwhile, on Saturday (tomorrow) Horsham welcome second in the table Old Colfeians. In London in November Old Colfs were in the middle of a purple patch, inflicting Horsham’s heaviest defeat of the season by far.
Junior Football Round Up
– Sparrows took their first home win of 2017 with a 7-2 victory over Cuckfield Cosmos when, after a poor start, Sparrows battled back to 2-2 at half-time through a first ever goal from Kate and one from Alice. The second half was much better from Sparrows and Charley scored after two minutes and then followed up to finish a great team goal. Tyla made it 5-2 and then Sophie got her first ever goal, Charley then completed her hattrick. Good performances from Bella in defence and hat-trick girl Charley, but girl of the game on her first start was Kate. Roffey U18 1 - 2 Barnham U18 A home defeat in their final league fixture brought Roffey’s undefeated run of 13 games to a disappointing end leaving a wait on the results of Barnham’s remaining fixtures to see who finishes as champions. In a tight game, Barnham took the lead late in the second half through Joe Taylor. Roffey responded and were rewarded with an equaliser when Alex Barker poked the ball home. But the celebrations were short lived as Barnham struck back immediately with Taylor scoring his second of the match with just a few minutes left to play. Next up for Roffey is the U18 Challenge Cup Final against Felpham to be played at Arundel FC later this month.
Bob Rogers Cup – Semi Final Horsham 46 - 42 Chichester Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham qualified for their fourth consecutive Bob Rogers Cup final, having won the last three – against Lewes in 2014, Crowborough in 2015 and Hove last year. But, despite a healthy half time lead, it was a close call. Horsham’s George Palmer opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a try, followed by another from Canice Gonzague, this time converted by Captain Tom Johnson. Then, Josh Steggles also got over the line, again Johnson adding the extras before he kicked a penalty and then maximised Mi-
Horsham A League U13 Champions, Chesworth Rovers
Chesworth Rovers U13 4 - 0 Billingshurst U13 Having won away at East Grinstead 0 - 7 last weekend, Chesworth needed just one point from this league decider to be crowned champions. With Billingshurst the only team capable of stopping Rovers the first half ended goalless and the one point needed was looking good. However, Rovers were not settling for the draw and in the second half Sam Jones converted a penalty kick before Toby Shepheard made it 2 - 0 with a superb volley. Regan Hiller headed home number
three and Nyle Barton banged in number to seal the title. Another fine victory in a superb season that ends with Rovers as Horsham A League U13 Champions for 2016/17. Horsham Sparrows U11 Girls – A great team performance from Sparrows saw them win against Crawley Town. Goals from Issy (4), Briony (2), Grace, Priya and Lottie combined with some great passing and defending was enough to seal the win for the hosts. Girl of the game was Gemma, Horsham Sparrows U15 Girls
Big win for YM in an up and down season SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 4 - 1 Littlehampton Town Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA’s inconsistent roller coaster of a season continued at Gorings Mead against Littlehampton Town when they hit one of their high moments of the campaign to comfortably win with four second half goals. YM have had more than their share of injuries but it would be fair to say that they have never really got going in what was predicted to be potentially a promotion chasing season. It all looked different back in August when they started with 6 points and a resounding Peter Bentley Cup win from their first three games, since then they have failed to string any long winning runs together and can now start planning for next season when, hopefully, consistency and a good deal more points to their name will see them reach their potential. The first half of this encounter lived up to the expectations of a game between two sides with little to play for, YM sitting mid-table and Littlehampton having probably done
enough to keep their Premier League status next season. The second half however saw a rampant YM put their visitors to the sword with goals spaced throughout the 45 minutes. The first came 9 minutes after the restart when Nick Sullivan started things off with the opener, followed 6 minutes later by a second, this time Luke Gedling getting his name on the scoresheet. Town, who have picked up 7 points from their previous 3 games, were looking to keep the run going and gave themselves hope when George Gaskin pulled a goal back with 73 minutes played. Any hopes Town had were short lived as less than two minutes later Mark Pritchard-Cave restored the two goal buffer to make it 3-1. With a couple of minutes remaining Nick Sullivan grabbed his second and YM’s fourth of the game to record a win that leaves them ninth in the league on 44 points, a whopping 36 points behind leaders Shoreham. YM travel to Newhaven Town tomorrow (Saturday 25). Town have a near identical record to YM’s, both having the same points but Newhaven with the better goal difference placing them in eighth.

Pelling helps Hornets secure a point in Ramsgate Alfie Rogers sets up Scott Harris for the equaliser
Ramsgate put under pressure from Ash Jones
Makeshift Heath team puts an end to losing run SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 4 - 0 Peacehaven & Telscombe Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC
Photos by John Lines Ryman League Division 1 South Ramsgate 1 – 1 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor With the nervous tension surrounding Horsham FC ahead of Tuesday’s new ground application hearing a defeat on the pitch, especially a Kent pitch, would have come as no surprise. As it turned out, Horsham came back with a good point, and much more importantly the club’s plans for the Hop Oast ground were finally approved at Tuesday night’s tense meeting. The point was earned through some poor finishing from the home side and some very fine goalkeeping from Horsham’s Josh Pelling, showing why he is rated as one of the best in the division. Coming straight out the blocks,
Horsham shocked the Rams when with only a few seconds played Darren Boswell’s slightly mishit cross fooled home ‘keeper Luke Watkins and hit the crossbar. The rest of the half saw the uninventive play being interrupted with half chances at each end, mostly aimed at the Horsham goal. Macauley Murray blasted over the bar when he should have done better for Ramsgate and his team mate Thomas Chapman was denied by a last ditched Scott Harris clearance. Pelling then made his first save of note when he made a great stop from a goal bound Rams effort, while at the other end Watkins was called into action to save well from Tom Lawley’s free kick. Jake MacKenzie spoilt a good skilful run with a very wayward finish that never bothered Pelling, although he had to work seconds before the break, diving to save
Alfie Paxman’s cross shot. The second half continued with Ramsgate having the better of the chances. Within minutes Horsham had a massive let off when Mackenzie ran clear, but with only Pelling to beat he hit the inside of the post. Mackenzie collected his own rebound and crossed dangerously forcing Pelling to push the ball away into the path of Samuel Lawford who, with the empty net gaping, inexplicably missed the target. As Ramsgate pressed Chapman put a header wide and then the same player was denied by a fine save from Pelling. To try and inject some pace, manager Di Paola swapped AshleyPaul Robinson and Liam Wright for youngsters James Thurgar and Alfie Rogers. The relentless pressure finally told when Luke Wheatley ran in to meet a low Chapman cross leaving Pelling no
chance and giving his side a lead that their pressure warranted. Amazingly though, after looking unlikely to score all match, eight minutes later Horsham were level. Di Paola’s substitutions paid off when Rogers ghosted past two defenders before playing a onetwo with Thurgar who crossed into the box from where the ball fell to Scott Harris who rifled into the bottom corner. The equaliser could have inspired either side to go for a winner; instead it reduced the final minutes to a stalemate as both sides settled for the point. Horsham now welcome runaway league leaders Tooting & Mitcham to Gorings Mead tomorrow (Saturday 25) as they see out the rest of the season and look forward to a new bright future at Hop Oast.
Sam picks up a trophy on his racing comeback Sam Osborne at Brands on his comeback
Photo by Gavin Elliot Motorcycling Elayne Numan - Sports Reporter Sam Osborne made his racing comeback at Brands Hatch in round one of Thundersport GB after a year out following a head injury. Sam was forced to put his racing career on hold last year after a
nasty crash on his GSX-R600 at a Snetterton practice day left him with post-concussion syndrome. But back at Brands Sam returned stronger than ever and determined to make up for lost time. It was a roller-coaster weekend, with tricky weather conditions and bike problems posing extra challenges for Sam, who’s
stepped up this season to the faster GP1 Sportsman class, riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000 K9. Test day was plagued with persistent bike issues – including oil and water leaks, as well as a failing quick-shifter – which meant Sam could only ride one session out of six. Heroic efforts from Gav Reed, boss of Sam’s technical support sponsor MSG Racing and Dyno, meant everything was sorted in time for qualifying on the Saturday. But after just three laps Sam’s gear link snapped and left him with no gears and no choice but to pull in. Sam qualified 25th, way back on the grid, but with the bike sorted, after a tentative start in fiercely windy conditions in Race 1 he began to find his rhythm. He came 5th in his class and 15th overall, including the two faster classes also racing. Damp conditions on Sunday threw up tyre dilemmas and Sam gambled with a wet front and dry rear tyre in Race 2. Although it provided ‘some interesting moments’ the punt paid off and
Sam finished 2nd in class and 11th overall. Race 3 was another damp race and Sam finished 5th in class and 10th overall. Sam, a 25-year-old carpenter from Billingshurst, said: ‘I’m so happy to be back racing after my head injury. I just wanted to get through this first weekend; I didn’t expect to pick up a trophy so that’s a bonus. My 1000cc bike will take some time to get used to after the old 600cc, but I feel I’ve already got a great connection with it; Brands Hatch has been a great step in the right direction. A massive thank you to Gav, all my sponsors and everyone who came to support me.’ Next up is round two at Donington Park this weekend (March 26-27). Sam’s sponsors include MSG Racing and Dyno, West Sussexbased Lane Motorsport, and Carl Blake of Blake’s Grooming in West Chiltington. Sam is still looking for additional sponsors and can be contacted on: its_ozzy@hotmail.co.uk.
Heath’s five game losing streak came to an end with an emphatic win over Peacehaven & Telscombe with Ollie Moore netting his first hat-trick of the season. Heath started well and Tim Martin was close to putting his side ahead when he met a Jamal Sultan cross with a powerful header that bounced over the crossbar. Minutes later Jamie Robinson got behind the Peacehaven defence and picked out Moore at the far post who gave ‘keeper Lawrence Sanded no chance with a header into the top corner of the net. The visitors responded well with Acer Wake hitting Peachaven’s first shot on target on 25 minutes which went straight into the arms of Michael Chester, minutes later Wake was again close with a shot just wide of the post and 10 minutes before the break he came even closer with an effort that came off the post and across the face of goal before Chester cleared the danger. The second half continued to be a close affair with Moore shooting just wide on 60 minutes and Martin was unlucky when he received the ball from Robinson and shot just over the bar from 12 yards. Heath doubled their lead in the 72nd minute from some clever wing play by Sultan who lost his marker before swinging in a ball which Martin dispatched at the near post. Heath were now dominating and added a third 10 minutes later when Scott Weller unselfishly squared the ball to Moore for a tap-in. Deep into added time Callum Nash broke away, Sanded was quickly off his line but as Nash tried to dribble the ball around the keeper he was brought down for a clear penalty from which Moore stepped up to convert and complete his hattrick. Assistant Manager Steve Whiting said afterwards “It was good to get back into winning ways, we’ve had a real tough run of fixtures in recent weeks which has come at a time when we’ve been missing a lot of our senior players, so it was good to see how the players reacted today, they all put in a shift and thoroughly deserve the win”.
