Recruitment co ‘Lords’ it at charity pancake race Crowds gathered on Tuesday (10 April) to witness this year’s long awaited Horsham Pancake Race, which took place in The Carfax. The event, which was set back from the original date, Shrove Tuesday, was organised as usual by the Horsham Rotary Club. Support came from main sponsor Ringway, who supplied the arena barriers and signs; Sainsbury’s, who supplied the pancakes, sugar and lemon juice; Horsham’s Town Centre Manager, Garry MortimerCook, who did a fantastic job of energetically compering the event, with musical support from Andrew Lake and intermittent help from Rotary’s Roger Cato, and Horsham personality Davey Pearson. Whilst this was primarily a fun lunchtime, the desire of many teams to win made it highly competitive, with Harris Lord winning the prestigious Sainsbury’s Cup once again. The colourfully dressed team from the Amber Foundation won the Non-Stop Party Shop Best Fancy Dress Trophy, whilst the best Individual Fancy Dress Trophy, donated by South East Hearing, went to Jon Santos from

the Amber Foundation, who was a gloriously colourful female for the day. Despite stiffer competition this year, Horsham Rotary Club pipped the Samaritans for the Waitrose Trophy for the best Over40’s Team. The St. Catherine’s Hospice Team took the Horsham Rotary Trophy for the winning Charity Team. The Rawlison Butler Trophy, for the member of the Winning Team who could produce the most skilful pancake flips, was won by Josh Hemsley. As well as gaining personal pride, the Teams were also running for Charity, with the most nominated charity by the participating teams being the Olive Tree Horsham Cancer Unit who pick up £300; St Catherine Hospice taking the £300 award for being the Charity nominated by the Winning Team; and St Catherine’s also taking the £300 Award as the winning Charity Team. The event, which is celebrating 10 years this year, and also recieved a record number of applicants, was deemed ‘a great success’ by organisers.

West Sussex Youth Cabinet and UK Youth Parliament Election Results 2018

Over the past month, young people across West Sussex (aged 11-18 years) have been voting in the West Sussex Youth Parliament and Youth Cabinet elections. 14,396 votes were successfully counted, which has resulted in 30 new members being appointed to the Youth Cabinet and 7 to the Youth Parliament. The West Sussex Youth Cabinet is a group of young people that cover every constituency seat, across the county, and represent the young people that live there. They participate in county wide consultations, by presenting the views of young people, as well as run their own campaigns. Previous campaigns from the cabinet have been on Anti-Radicalisation, Education and Mental Health. Stephen Hillier, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “I’m delighted to welcome the new members to the Youth Cabinet and Youth Parliament. “This is a great opportunity for

the voices of young people to be heard in politics and I look forward to hearing their views on our services, and working with them over the coming months.” The newly elected Members of Youth Parliament (MYP) and their Deputies will be doing things as the West Sussex Youth Cabinet as well as being included in the national programme run by the British Youth Council. They will be campaigning in their national campaigns, which, for this year, are Votes at 16 and Education. Members of the Youth Parliament will also be attending the Annual Sitting, which is an opportunity for issues in West Sussex to be discussed at a national level; as well the House of Commons sitting in November, which decides future campaigns for MYPs to run. News Martin Read - Reporter Local artist Katie Wells has brightened the Horsham scene with some eye-catching murals – at each entrance of the underpass connecting the town to Horsham Park. The spring and summery panels depict fresh, colourful scenes with delightful animals, known as The Townies and The Parkies, engaged in activities in the park, coolly dressed rabbits playing tennis, football and skateboarding and enjoying activities on the bandstand, too. Town Centre and Events Manager, Garry Mortimer-Cooke says: “Local graphic artist Johnny Lambert – a member of Horsham Artists’ Open Studios (HAOS) -recommended Katie and we commissioned her to produce the original art work to promote the relationship between Horsham Park and the Town Centre, encouraging visitors to enjoy both venues. We’re delighted to support a local artist and that the feedback has been extremely positive.” Talking to the District Post Collyers educated artist Katie said: “This is my first major project and it was a very enjoyable process. First I produced the original illustrations in water colours on paper and then they were blown up and transferred onto metal signing material.” 22 year old Katie, from Wisborough Green, went on to say that she graduated from Bath Spa University with a degree in graphic communications. Why art and why animals? Katie continues: “I’ve loved art ever since I was little and, growing up in the countryside I love animals, too.” After acknowledging Beatrix Potter and

Quentin Blake as her inspiration, Katie added: “I’ve also produced some alternative scenes for autumn and winter and the plan is to alternate with those panels when the seasons change.” Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Jonathon Chowen commented: “I am delighted that as the district approaches

more hidden gems and building on our home grown creative skills, giving them a platform to promote themselves and grow as the Year of Culture unfolds.” While, Gordon Lindsay, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy summed up saying: “Developing our local culture is key to developing our local economy. IMPORTANT NEWS FOR BOTH INDIVIDUALS AND SMALL BUSINESSES ABOUT CHANGES ON PERSONAL DATA If you’re an individual and you’ve recently been receiving lots of emails or letters from banks, credit cards, online retailers or even, if you like a bet, online bookmakers, there’s a reason. The reason is a whole new range of data protection regulations come into place on May 25th. If you’re a business, no matter how large or small, that has data on its customers, you’ll need to be making plans to comply with the new regulations called the GDPR – which stands for General Data Protection Review. IN PRINCIPLE IT’S A GOOD IDEA… In principle the regulations are well conceived. People’s data should be protected. If a business holds your data – email, name and address, mobile phone number, etc., it has a duty of care to protect you. I think we all agree that’s sensible and proper. The GDPR is an EU issue, but one we will still subscribe to after Brexit. It’s about how data is held and looked after. Actually, whilst some people kick and scream about ‘the big data society’, most of us are happy that people we bank with or buy things from hold our data – it makes life much easier. … BUT IN THE SHORT-TERM IT COSTS INDIVIDUALS TIME, AND BUSINESSES WILL LOSE MONEY AND CUSTOMERS The problem is that every business is charged with the obligation to contact all of its customers and get them to re-confirm that it’s OK to hold their details on file. That’s why you’ll be receiving emails and letters. And it’s really important that you respond to those people you want to keep on doing business with. The challenge for businesses, whose life-blood is increasingly the ability to market to its database, is that

they will lose clients. Human nature being what it is, and with the current ‘scare story’ media environment, it’s reasonable to expect that if you give people the choice to say they don’t want you to have their data they’ll agree. People like to say ‘no’ to things. It’s a double whammy for businesses – on the one hand they are going to have to pay to comply with the regulations and reconfirm their lists. On the other they’ll lose clients, even those who have previously opted-in. THE LAW THAT GOES AGAINST THE LAW… For professional services businesses it poses a huge conundrum. For example, ‘by law’ solicitors are obliged to keep records going back at least six years. There’s a reason for that – some contracts last that long or longer, and lawyers are not immune to facing legal a ction if a client thinks they have been misrepresented. We keep records to ensure our clients are safe, but also so that we are safe. However we are now obliged to write to former customers, many may well be surprised to hear from us after so many years, to ask if we can keep their records on file. If they say ‘no’ we’re somewhat between a rock and a hard place, as one law tells us we must keep them and another law tells us we can’t. New powers to deal with anti-social behaviour in Horsham District

On 1 April, a new Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) was put in place across the Horsham District. The Order will last for three years, ending on 31 March 2021. Public Spaces Protection Orders are intended to deal with a particular nuisance or problem, in a particular area, that is detrimental to the local community’s quality of life. PSPOs impose conditions on the use of that area which apply to everyone. They are designed to ensure the lawabiding majority can enjoy public spaces, safe from anti-social behaviour.

The new PSPO for Horsham District aims to address a number of key issues, raised by members of the Community Safety Partnership, that are having a detrimental effect on the quality of life for residents and visitors. As a result of the Order, there are now four prohibitions in force across the Horsham District. These include: Clean up dog fouling; Keep dogs under control; No anti-social use of vehicles; No nuisance behaviour relating to alcohol. In Horsham Town Centre, an additional prohibition is: No unauthorised access, or nuisance

behaviour, on buildings or street furniture. A further prohibition is in place, specifically related to racing of horse-drawn vehicles on dual carriageways in the District. The Police, Neighbourhood Wardens, and a number of Horsham District Council officers, have the authority to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for PSPOs. Commenting on the introduction of the PSPOs, Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, said: “We live in a wonderful district, and the PSPOs will help us ensure that everyone’s enjoyment is not spoilt by a minority. “We do understand the frustration, and upset, that can be caused by nuisance and antisocial behaviour, and believe that the PSPOs are a useful addition to the work we already do to keep our public areas clean and safe.” It is an offence for a person to engage in any activity prohibited by PSPOs. Any person found guilty is liable to a Fixed Penalty Notice up to £100. If it is not paid, they may be taken to court and fined (not exceeding level 3) up to £1000. The sealed Public Spaces Protection Order can be downloaded from the Horsham District Council website. Visit www.horsham. gov.uk and search for PSPO.

Sussex residents have the chance to pose questions to the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) at a meeting this month. Written questions are now being invited for Katy Bourne, ahead of the next meeting of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel on Friday 27 April. Questions can be about any policy issue relating to policing in Sussex (but not related to operational matters, or a live case). The deadline for receiving questions is midday, today (13 April). Questions can be submitted in writing to pcp@westsussex. gov.uk or by telephoning 03302 222538. The main item on the agenda at the meeting is Sussex Police 2018/22 Transformation Strategy. This will set out how the Chief Constable plans to spend the additional funds raised by the Commissioner’s policing precept increase. Horsham Jewellers suffers break in

News Martin Read - Reporter Horsham is a law abiding town so it comes as something of a shock when one of our pleasant, traditional, very long established local family businesses suffers the type of break in more associated with big city crime. But, that is what has happened

at Trelfers Jewellers in East Street early last Sunday morning. It was a smash and grab in every sense of the words – the robber penetrated the steel shutters and then broke through the plate glass door at the shop just after 6.30am, snatching what was immediately available and escaping within two minutes, making off with a dozen or so pairs of silver cufflinks and

an Air Ambulance charity box. Trelfers was established in 1881, making the business the oldest jewellers in the town. After originally trading as B.H. Trelfer, Watch & Clock maker of Capel and Horsham, they commenced occupation of the current premises at 9 East Street as long ago as 1907, trading as Trelfer & Co, a truly independent family busi-

ness, selling quality products and providing repairs with good, experienced advice and friendly service, now administered by the Cox family. Terry Cox joined the company as a watch and clock maker in 1953, going on to become the Manager before subsequently becoming the owner. Terry’s son John worked with his father from a young age and today runs the business with his wife Pauline, saying: “The police responded immediately after the call was received via Alarm Monitoring and were there within 20 minutes. The alarm worked perfectly, but what annoys us both more than anything is the taking of the Air Ambulance charity box.” Customers’ items and high value stock were unaffected because the shop safe far exceeds the requirements imposed by the insurers, but, on top of the annoyance and inconvenience of the break in, insult was added to injury - John and Pauline Cox explaining: “HDC wardens gave us a parking ticket despite us being parked across the street – in a loading bay – but with a note on the dashboard stating why!” The ticket has been since cancelled. Any witnesses to the break in, or anyone with any information concerning the crime are asked to contact the police online quoting serial 268 of 08/04.

West Sussex County Council backs national #CareAware campaign A new survey reveals choosing care for yourself or a relative is one of the biggest sources of stress compared to other events in your life. West Sussex County Council is endorsing the Care Quality Commission’s latest campaign to make sure you know what to look for when choosing care. According to a survey of 1,000 people carried out for the Care Quality Commission (CQC), 70% of adults, who were responsible for choosing care, found it more stressful than choosing a school or nursery for their child, or a venue for their wedding or civil partnership. 52% of people surveyed said choosing a care home is in their top three most stressful life decisions. The vast majority (72%) of respondents said that seeing a care home for themselves was the most important factor in helping make their decision. No Incinerator 4 Horsham has EU support

Horsham residents, who are fighting plans for a waste incinerator near the town, have international backing. Delegates from 28 organisations across 24 European countries, meeting recently in Brussels at the Zero Waste Europe AGM, sent a visual message of solidarity to No Incinerator 4 Horsham. Zero Waste Europe is a network of grassroots groups, headquartered in Brussels, which has made significant progress in strengthening emerging EU policy on the Circular Economy and resource management. It has advised local

authorities around Europe on how to achieve dramatic improvements in recycling, publishing case studies, and facilitating study visits by council officers. The membership of Zero Waste Europe is united in opposing waste incineration as contra to a Circular Economy. Two UK delegates attended the Brussels meeting, one from Zero Waste Derry (there is a growing number of Zero Waste groups around the country), the other from UK Without Incineration Network (UKWIN), which has around 100 member groups op-

posing existing (or planned) waste incinerators. Neil Pitcairn, a director of UKWIN, said: “There are ample reasons to oppose incineration, apart from the local factors in the Horsham and Warnham areas, such as industrialisation of a rural area. There is an established correlation between depressed recycling rates and incinerator use, and a looming surplus capacity of waste disposal infrastructure in the UK. Already there is surplus incinerator capacity in mainland Northern Europe, which has led countries like Germany, Holland

and Sweden to import waste to burn or face shutting down their district heating systems. We are entering the era of incinerator decommissioning, to allow recycling to continue to grow. Now is not the time to build a new one in Horsham.” At national level, the tide also seems to be changing against incineration. DEFRA’s Chief Scientist, Professor Ian Boyd said in January 2018, giving evidence to EFRACOM: “I think that incineration, and this is a personal view, I think incineration is not a good direction to go in. I think that if you are investing many tens of millions, hundreds of millions, in urban waste incineration plants – and those plants are going to have a 30 to 40 year lifespan – you have to have the waste streams to keep them supplied. Now that is the market pull on waste, so it encourages the production of waste, it encourages the production of residual waste, it encourages people to think that we can throw what could be potentially valuable materials (if we were to think about them innovatively) into a furnace and burn them.” Neil Pitcairn added: “Given that one tonne of waste burnt gives off one tonne of CO2, it makes no sense to use incineration to generate electricity, so inefficiently, when we are trying to decarbonise our energy supplies”.

Rotary’s ‘Worlds Greatest Meal’ global funding initiative founder visits Storrington

Susanne Rea of the Rotary Club of Cairns Sunrise, in Australia, and Mukesh Malhotra from the Rotary Club of Hounslow, England, have set up the ‘Worlds Greatest Meal’, a global funding initiative around food, fun and fundraising, to support Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign. Susanne visited Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club to thank the Club for its ‘World’s Greatest Meal’ fundraising efforts, and to update members on Rotary’s amazing drive to eradicate the

World of Polio. Her idea is simple - a program in which Rotarians host meals, anything from two people having lunch to elaborate gourmet dinners, and ask for donations. The ‘World’s Greatest Meal’ initiative started small, but has grown enormously. Since its launch in 2014, nearly $9 million has been raised, providing vaccinations for more than 14 million children. To keep the momentum alive, Susanne re-mortgaged her house and embarked on a self-funded world tour,

speaking, vaccinating children, and motivating parents, governments and supporters across 32 countries. She contracted polio as a child herself at four years old, spending a year in isolation at Birmingham hospital and undergoing 18 operations on her legs to help her walk. In 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined Rotary in its commitment to ending polio and since 2013 the Foundation has matched every $1 Rotary commits to polio eradication 2 to1. Rotary, with matching funds from the Gates Foundation, has contributed more than $1.6 billion to end polio and Rotary Clubs and Rotarians throughout the World have been active in raising funds locally. Money raised on the evening, and at other local Rotary events, raised over £1,100 - that is £3,300 with matching grants! Rotary President, Brian Parfitt, thanked Susanne for coming to Storrington, and Club Members applauded her work to end the scourge of polio. Since the ‘End Polio Now’ programme began, 2.5 billion children have been vaccinated and there has been a 99.9% worldwide reduction in polio cases.

Survey Invitation: Storrington Conservation Society Winter seemed to drag on this year, spring started and then stopped. It prolonged the life of daffodils but delayed other plants. The change of the clocks told us we could look forward to warmer days. Bluebells, trees budding, birds raising their young, all lifting the spirits and perhaps encouraging us to spend time in the open. There are plenty of walks nearby to enjoy. With this in mind, we would like to invite readers to participate in a bird survey we are conducting during the late spring and summer. If you take a walk besides the River Stor, at any location between the Mill Pond and Fryern Dell, why not keep an eye out for the birds that you see? Then let us know what you have seen, and where, by recording details on our website: www.storringtonconservation.org.uk/. Your results will help us to gain a clear idea of the birds we have,

and help us to manage the area for their maximum benefit. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful area, and give thanks for all who care for, preserve and protect these places. Our Society contributes by the upkeep of local woodlands and open spaces. Rewarding in itself as well as meeting a need. At the work party on 7 April, we spent time clearing the stream and its banks, in the section between Love Lane and Fryern Dell. The recent rains having given fresh life to the flow. On 5 May at 10.00am, we will be carrying out similar work, further upstream, in preparation for the annual Duck Race. Those who enjoy splashing about, do join us. International travel adaptor tests find serious issues In the midst of the Easter break, West Sussex Trading Standards are warning about the dangers of buying cheap electrical travel adaptors for use abroad. The warning comes after Trading Standards Officers bought 10 adaptors from a range of high street and online suppliers and sent them for safety testing. Four in particular failed the testing – all of them posing a risk of electric shock from poor design and construction, as well as other safety issues. Trading Standards Team Manager, Peter Aston, said: “The four outlets concerned, TK Maxx, Game, Bags ETC and Crawley Accessories, all did the responsible thing when told the results of our investigation and immediately issued product recalls. “Usually when we undertake this sort of product testing, our advice to avoid problems is to buy from recognised names. However, in this case, even those from recognised stores failed safety tests. The only common factor was the cheapest ones failed. “We would urge anyone who has bought travel adaptors from these outlets to check with the trader to see if their product is affected.”

Debbie Kennard, Cabinet Member for Stronger, Safer Communities, said: “Our advice is clear: if you have bought one of the products, please stop using it and return it to the shop for a full refund.” Although these adaptors came from four different outlets they represent only two products, each marketed under two different brand names. Fernhurst Choral Society hosts “Come & Sing” in Petworth Fernhurst Choral Society will be holding the next of its enthusiastic, and ever-popular, “Come and Sing” days at St Mary’s Church, Petworth on Saturday 21 April, featuring choruses from Karl Jenkins The Armed Man. Based on the Catholic Mass, the piece was commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum for the Millennium celebrations and was premiered at The Royal Albert Hall, London in April 2000. It has since been performed many hundreds of times. A Double Act to Remember

Christ’s Hospital was delighted to welcome the stand-up comedian, Romesh Ranganathan, as part of its spring term visiting speakers programme. Romesh was ‘in conversation’ with his own favourite teacher, Howard Holdsworth, an English teacher at Christ’s Hospital who taught Romesh as a young pupil at another school earlier in his long teaching career. In an article published in the Times Educational Supplement last year, Romesh chose How-

ard Holdsworth as his ‘favourite teacher’. Whilst being interviewed at Christ’s Hospital, he commented about being taught by Mr Holdsworth: “I thought ‘this guy is funny’ - he started talking about English in this really exciting and amazing way. It gave me a love for the subject that has stayed with me.” As well as sharing stories about his life as a comedian, which had the audience in stitches, Romesh spoke about the importance of following your dreams and also

about learning by failing. Afterwards, he stayed behind to answer questions and have selfies taken with the pupils, who were clearly thrilled to have the chance to meet him. Overall, it was a hugely entertaining and enjoyable evening and the audience was grateful to both Romesh and Mr Holdsworth for making it such a memorable event. Amlan Saha, teacher in charge of the visiting speakers programme at Christ’s Hospital, said: “The visiting speakers programme, now in its third year at Christ’s Hospital, is a very successful part of the broader curriculum. The guest speakers encourage our pupils to challenge their own opinions. They also promote discussion and debate on a wide range of topics. “This term, our guest speakers have included political author Sir Anthony Seldon, the philosopher Professor Grayling on ‘Knowledge and the Theory of Knowledge’, Sir Rupert Jackson PC who adjudicated a law debate, a classics lecture by Dr Gail Trimble, and we were absolutely delighted when Romesh accepted our invitation to be interviewed by his favourite teacher, Howard Holdsworth.”

Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter On an overcast Good Friday the Horsham RFU Colts tour party left for St Maixent l’Ecole France for their traditional Easter Tour. St Maixent is twinned with Horsham and this weekend’s tour was to once again to play Rugby and rekindle the special relationship between the two towns. The tour party of 22 players and 12 coaches/parents/tourists arrived thanks to EasyJet, settled into their accommodation, and had dinner at the Rugby club and got to know their hosts. Saturday started with breakfast, a tour of the town and then a meeting with Leopold Moreau, the Mayor of St Maxient. Also in attendance was a member of Hor-

sham’s twinning committee Mr James Prentice. There followed introductions and speeches from the mayor of St Maixent, Stéphane Guignard, President of St Maxient Rugby club, Sam Jewell the Horsham Colts Captain and James Prentice who also exchanged gifts. After lunch a three team tournament was played with Horsham Colts beating Puilbureau 5-14 and Niort 5-17. In the evening the tour party attended a dinner & disco that had been arranged by the hosts with 300 people associated with Saint Maixent Rugby Club in attenannce Sunday and the big game against a combined team of St Maixent and Parthenay kicked off at 3pm with national anthems before the match. The final score of the game which was played in

great spirit was St Maixent 35 – 66 Horsham Colts. The evening was spent at the Rugby club getting socialising with our hosts a small party of the touring adults attending, with some of our hosts, a enjoyable concert of Bach music at the Abbey in St Maxient. The next day all returned home having enjoyed a great weekend, witnessed some fantastic Rugby and forging stronger links with the citizens of St Maixent. We would like to thank the Mayor of St Maxient for welcoming us to his town but special thanks must go to Stéphane Guignard who with his team, kept the tour party fed and entertained the whole weekend. Horsham RUFC look forward to hosting Saint Maixent U18 when they return to Horsham in 2020.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter The new cricket season is about to start and things are buzzing at Horsham Cricket Club in anticipation of another busy season packed with games at all levels. With four Saturday XIs, a Thursday team, womens’ cricket and a multitude of colts’ fixtures there will be plenty of cricket activity at both grounds at the club throughout the season – at weekends and mid week, too. So, if you are cricketer and would like to play at Horsham’s beautiful ground then come along to the club. The first XI are one of the ten clubs in the Sussex Premier League, which they have won on a serial basis having carried off the Sussex Cup on many occasions, lastly in 2016, before which they won the National Knock out Cup at Lord’s. Horsham’s Paul Baker tells the District Post: “The club has a proud history and a great track record and we are always looking to welcome new players of all abilities. The facilities at the club are excellent – when Sussex last played at Horsham the um-

pires said that the wicket was the best they’d seen all season - and the grass practice and artificial outdoor nets are outstanding, too. The ground is also home to Horsham Squash club, and the HQ of Horsham Hockey – a top club in the south of England. ing has produced a conveyor belt of cricketers for the county, including Chris Nash, Robin Martin-Jenkins, Will Beer, current Horsham captain Michael Thornely and recently Tom Haines. The setting at the club with the impressive back drop of the parish church framed by a superb display of mature trees – just five minutes walk from the town centre across the river and down Horsham’s iconic Causeway - is unbeatable and there is ample car parking. Horsham Chairman Richard Marshall sums up saying: “There will be a friendly match against Eastbourne at the club on Saturday 21st and, next day, T20 cricket against a touring side. Then on the 28th we’re got a Sussex Cup game here against Haywards Heath, before the Premier League starts on Saturday May 5th. Not content with winning their league this season and getting through to Regional Final of the RFU National Under 18s Cup at home on April 22nd, Horsham Colts returned from their Easter tour to France with a hat trick of wins from their three games. The tour reprised regular visits to Horsham’s twin town, St Maixent L’ecole in western France, Horsham Colts Team Manager Jeremy Allen telling the District Post: “This tour re-ignites a relationship between the two clubs stretching back over 40 years of traditional Easter tours and, once again we were treated royally, getting to know our hosts at a dinner soon after our plane had touched down on Good Friday.” 22 players, boosted by coaches, parents and supporters made the trip and the tour party breakfasted well on Saturday before touring the town and meeting the mayor and local dignitaries, accompanied by James Pren-

Impressive Horsham display subdues Dover Saturday April 7 – London 2 South East Horsham 41 12 Dover Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter In December Horsham were narrowly beaten by 7th placed Dover in East Kent, but on Saturday they expunged that memory with an impressive win courtesy of a strong all round team performance. A tight game was predicted because Dover had only endured one reverse this year, but Horsham had other ideas, piling in five first half tries. Dover set out to attack but were kept well back into their half before Declan Nwachukwu got over the line after quarter of an hour and then repeated the dose to put the Green & Whites 10 up. Next, Johnny Whiting completed a try from a line out before Josh Steggles ran half the field to score under the posts and when Joe Wilde converted Horsham were 22 points to the good. And, it got even better when Ryan Maguire went over, Wilde again converting to give Horsham a handsome 29-nil advantage at the break. However, the second half was more even, Dover remaining competitive, but when Wilde converted his own try, the visitors had a mountain to climb. They did eventually post 12 points, but a late Mike

Watts try secured Horsham’s well deserved win, Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “The work rate of our forwards gave a real platform for the backs to play and our accuracy was excellent, which combined with our pace, stretched the Dover defence all afternoon. Horsham ease to another win at South Park Saturday April 7 – Bostik Football League South Division South Park 1 3 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter When the two sides met in October it was a goal-less draw but last Saturday Horsham were undisputed winners, maintaining their unbeaten record at South Park’s St George’s Field ground in Reigate’s Whitehall Lane. Weather rearrangements have resulted in a barrage of fixtures for South Park – including the need to use an alternative ground while their own was unfit – so there were extenuating circumstances for them, but, although Horsham conceded an early goal, they really came good in the second half, coming away worthy winners. With the light extinguished from the Sparks’ game, energised Horsham scythed through the defence, Landais’ pass enabling Cojocarel to score his second goal. The same two players were promptly in action again, but to no avail. However, Charlie Farmer soon put Horsham two goals clear when he put in a close range rebound. Horsham then took control and although they were unable to add to their score, there was only one winner. Horsham remain 13th ahead of their visit to the Dripping Pan on Wednesday (11th) to take on leaders Lewes. Notably, Horsham became one of the few teams to beat Lewes this season, when they despatched them 2-1 on New Years Day. On Saturday Horsham return to their temporary Lancing home to welcome 19th placed Faversham Town, whom they beat 1-2 in Kent in November.

Loxwood fielded four young players on loan and were naturally jubilant post match, but a neutral assessment would be that while they were not gifted the game, they were nevertheless very fortunate to benefit from both a YM penalty miss and an own goal. After a seven match winning run when clean sheets were the norm, YM have only won one of their last four league

games and suddenly goals have been hard to come by. In the 27th minute YM were, perhaps generously, awarded a penalty and Luke Gedling stepped up, but he found the outside of the post, the ball going harmlessly wide. However, five minutes later Dave Brown put YM ahead from close range before, with YM looking certain to double their lead, the ball was somehow scrambled away. Then, just before half time, YM keeper Aaron Jeal had no chance when a botched clearance was turned into his net – one for sorrow for YM, the half ending 1-1. Resuming, Phil Johnson was bundled off the ball without sanction ahead of Dave Brown sending over a pinpoint cross, only for Luke Donaldson to head over in front of goal. Johnson and Brown were then both floored in the same incident and Loxwood unleashed an errant long range shot, until Johnson was unable to latch onto another Brown cross. YM then had an unfulfilled corner and failed to maximise a quality Gedling pass and build up before action switched to the other end, where poor defending enabled Loxwood’s Michael Wood to put them in front, two for joy for the Magpies. Aaron Jeal rushed out to palm away a seemingly certain Loxwood goal, but that was a rare threat from the visitors. Four more YM corners and other attacks followed, all to no avail, the game ending in severe disappointment for Goring Mead supporters. YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “We had enough opportunities to win two matches! We just weren’t on top of our game – we’re a bit down, but not feeling the pressure - its just that we’re not getting the rub of the green at present.”

Battling Heath shaded at Lancing Saturday April 7 Macron Store Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Lancing 2 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In a much changed side at Culver Road, Heath were missing Alex Parsons, Shaun Findlay, Martyn Flack, Tim Martin and keeper Michael Chester, but they were delighted to see the return of leading scorer Devon Fender and fellow forward Javlon Campbell, both sidelined for substantial periods. In November Heath beat Lancing 2-1 at the Leisure Centre and the score was the same on Saturday, but this time in 10th placed Lancing’s favour, despite Heath’s concerted late efforts to share the points. The game started quietly, neither goalkeeper being challenged until the 18th minute, when Liam Benson’s seemingly routine volley evaded Conor Evento’s grasp to put Lancing ahead. Heath responded positively, but skipper Tom Bold

fired over before Fender’s strike went just wide. Then, 20 minutes before half time, Benson scored again when he blasted a rebound home to give Lancing a two goal cushion. Lancing were putting Heath under pressure, Mike Williamson hitting the bar and Alex Spinks being narrowly off target. Heath, though, reduced the deficit right on half time when Stuart Chester hammered home from close quarters. The second half also began quietly, but Evento needed to be at his best to keep out a low volley from Williamson. Campbell, Fender, Gicu Iordache and substitute George Cousins all subsequently tested Lancing keeper Tyler D’Cruz, but to no avail, Lancing remaining unbeaten in their last six games. Heath, 15th in the table, next travel to current runners up Pagham (on Tuesday 10th), looking to avenge the 1-2 reverse that they endured at home in October. Then, on Saturday they welcome Newhaven (9th), against whom they drew 1-1 in East Sussex last December.

Horsham Ladies in Cup Final, again!

Saturday April 7 – Sussex Cup Semi Final Horsham 3 0 Lewes Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies romped through to yet another cup final - since the 2001-2 season they have appeared in twelve of the 15 finals, winning ten. Last year the ladies beat Lewes 2-4 in the semi final and this time they eliminated them again, with a clean sheet, but the game had a grizzly ending. Horsham were without regulars Louisa Denman and Fran Crossley, but they went two up in no time, Bex Ross converting a penalty and Bella Little notching up a field goal. Then, ten minutes before half time, from a short corner Bex had a shot pushed away by the visiting keeper and although Lewes had attacks they were not overly threatening, the score remaining 2-0 at the break. On the restart Sam Stares broke through for Horsham but her strike was negated before Bex Ross’

backhander came to nothing. But, she did not have to wait too long for her second goal, which she executed spectacularly, lying on the pitch and nonchalantly reverse sweeping the ball into the net. By this time Horsham were calling the shots and a goal mouth scramble was somehow kept out by Lewes until, with Horsham in residence in the visitors’ half, Sam Stares was denied again. Then came an enforced, bloody abandonment when, in the 52nd minute a Lewes player was hit flush in the mouth by the ball and, not wearing a gum shield, lost teeth. A prolonged delay ensued with the unfortunate victim lying on the pitch. With Lewes players needing to carry their team mate to a car en route to hospital, the umpires abandoned the game and awarded it to Horsham, CJ White, Horsham Club Captain, telling the District Post: “This was such a shame – she had stitches and fortunately has had her teeth replaced. We’re now in another final – that will be at Lewes, with the date to be advised.”

YM clinch historic first cup win

Tuesday April 10th – Sussex Under 21s Challenge Cup Final Horsham YMCA U21s 5 - 2 East Preston Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA Under 21 team were thrilled to win the inaugural Challenge Cup Final at the Sussex FA’s Lancing headquarters, giving the club their first silverware for four years – the last trophy success coming when the senior side

lifted the RUR Cup, also against East Preston at Lancing. East Preston scored the opening goals in each half, but YM responded well, putting their opponents under sustained pressure. YM are current runners up in the league, whereas East Preston are bottom, but the gulf was not initially apparent. After Mark Fox in the YM goal had caught a high ball George Laughlin cleanly converted a cross to put Preston ahead in the 19th minute, YM, though, replied with two corners and a free kick,

challenging Preston keeper Ben Purkis. A goal looked imminent and duly came when another free kick found the bar from which George Hole headed the equaliser. YM kept pushing and two minutes later, with half time approaching Alfie Jones nodded in a corner and there was still just time for YM to add a third, Hole putting in a cross from the right after Callum Jeal had instigated a foray from the half way line. The last 20 minutes had been all YM, fully warranting their 3-1 lead at the break.

As expected, Preston came at YM hard on the resumption and when Jake Heryet clawed back the deficit after 10 minutes and with Preston beginning to stretch YM wide the outcome was still up for grabs. However, Bradley Ross collected the ball, working his way through the Preston defence to roll it into an empty goal, easing the tension. Long ball attacks were enabling Preston to open YM up at the back, but when substitute Jake Meli broke through on the left to score YM’s fifth goal in the 83rd minute

it was game over, ecstatic Captain Callum Jeal telling the District Post: “That’s absolutely fantastic – I never thought we’d win 5-2 when mid way through the second half they were just a goal behind.” Callum’s proud father, YM Manager Dave Jeal – who had just flown in from Valencia for the game – told us: “Brilliant! A great team performance, Mark Fox’s experience in goal was a great asset and if we can win our last three league games we could yet pull off the double.”
