A Lidl bit of good news martin read

Lidl, the global discount supermarket chain, is planning to open a neighbourhood food store in Horsham. And, in a straw poll specially conducted on behalf of the District Post, the response to the news has been overwhelmingly positive. The proposed site – the former Dreams bedding store on the junction of Foundry Lane and Kings Road - has been the subject of rumours and speculation locally. James Mitchell, Head of Property for Lidl UK, responsible for new store development in our area, has just confirmed that Lidl already own the site, which, prior to the occupation by Dreams - who now trade from Albion Way in the town - was used as a wood yard by local timber merchants Agates. German owned Lidl have over 10,000 stores across Europe, and ambitious development plans for the UK, where they launched in 1994. They opened their 700th UK store in January and now employ

over 10,000 people here and some 315,000 worldwide. Lidl won The Grocer magazine’s Food & Drink Own Label Award last year and 40 new jobs would be created at Horsham. No frills Lidl believe in passing savings on to customers with many weekly offers of ‘the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices’ and believe that there is currently a gap in our local market for the ranges that they would provide. Shoppers in our district have long felt that a discount supermarket would be an asset to the town; in 2016 some Horsham residents wrote to Lidl, campaigning for them to come to Horsham. Roffey’s Anne Walker told the District Post: “Lidl would be good for the town – they provide good value for money and will bring much needed competition”, while Suzanne Davies, said: “I would welcome a supermarket on the Roffey side of town – I shop at Lidl’s Three Bridges store, like their products and can’t wait for them to come!” A typical reaction to Lidl’s news is “they’ve been a long time coming!” – a sentiment echoed by Horsham’s Hugh Waller, who says: “I’ve been shopping at Lidl’s at Three Continued on P2

Lidl bit of good news Cont...Bridges for some years, their prices are unbeatable and their wine is superb. Horsham will benefit from their arrival!” The general feeling is that the shabbily boarded up site is a repellent eyesore at the entrance to Horsham and long overdue for refurbishment. Lidl plan to replace the existing buildings with new two-storey premises comprising a bespoke foodstore with 1000 square metre sales area parallel with Kings Road. The glazed shop front would face out towards the roundabout and there would be free parking for customers, including disabled, parent and child spaces and provision for cyclists and pedestrians, although the constrained nature of the site would only provide 52
bays. Additional information on the proposed Lidl development is available at www.horsham.lidl. co.uk and supporters can visit www.gopetition.com/petitions/ support-lidl-in-horsham.html to sign the petition – email: SupportLidlHorsham@lidl.co.uk, or, for those not in support – StopLidlHorsham@lidl.co.uk. Lidl say that their intention is to collate all comments – positive and negative – for formal submission to Horsham District Council and are encouraging local consultation. Their Southampton based Property Office is available to answer any questions – 023 8074 2581. In due course the planning application can be viewed at: www.horsham. gov.uk/planning/view-and-comment-on-planning-application.
Still time to help make West Sussex even safer In an ongoing bid to combat crime and anti-social behaviour in West Sussex, West Sussex County Council is asking residents to share their experiences in a short survey. Child sexual exploitation, extremism, radicalisation, ‘cuckooing’ and modern slavery, are the key subjects they are called on to consider. These priorities are based on national and local evidence, and were chosen because they are often seen as ‘hidden crimes’, so their signs can be harder to spot. Debbie Kennard, Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “Your experience, opinions and knowledge are invaluable when it comes to helping our teams combat criminal activity here in West Sussex. “Working together really does make a big difference.
“That’s why we would be so grateful for any time you can spare to complete this short survey.” The survey, which is run by Safer West Sussex Partnership, brings together Community Safety Partnerships and other key agencies, including Sussex Police, NHS Sussex, and West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, to reduce crime. The aim of the survey is to inform residents on the types and nature of these threats, at the same time as gathering valuable community intelligence in order to target activity and resources effectively. To take part in the survey, please visit: https://haveyoursay. westsussex.gov.uk/communitiespublic-protection/safer-westsussex-partnership-survey-2018/ Closing date: 10 June 2018.

Fire service joins thousands around the world to celebrate IDAHOBIT
The colourful stripes of the rainbow flag were seen flying from fire stations and West Sussex County Council buildings across the county on Thursday 17 May, championing the importance of inclusion and diversity. The flags were raised to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) and see the local authority unite with thousands of organisations around the world to celebrate the LGBT+ community. The occasion has added weight this year, with firefighters from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) also raising the flag from a number of their fire stations for the first time. Leader of West Sussex County Council, Louise Goldsmith, said: “Raising the rainbow flag is a simple, but clear, demonstration of our support for all LGBT+ communities. “It demonstrates that we are opposed to all forms of discrimination, harassment, bullying, and hate crime. “While much has already been achieved, a lot remains to be done to ensure the social acceptance of people from minority communities. West Sussex County Council is determined to play its part in this, and I hope that flying the rainbow flag today goes some way to reassuring people of our commitment to this.” Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Neil Stocker, said he was proud the fire and rescue service was marking IDAHOBIT this year. He said: “Flying the rainbow
flag from ten of our fire stations across the county sends an important message out to the communities we serve that the fire service champions and values diversity. “Our fire and rescue service is a vital part of the community and strives to keep every person in that community safe.” Debbie Kennard, the county council’s cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said she was also very proud the fire service was taking part, and added: “It is absolutely fantastic to see the rainbow flag flying from so many of WSFRS’s buildings today to raise awareness of the stigma that so many people around the world still face on a day-to-day basis.” The county council has recently restarted its LGBT+ Staff Group which is being led by county planning team manager Jane Moseley. She said: “Raising the rainbow flag is a small thing, but it means a lot to those of us in the LGBT+ community. It means our employer recognises and supports us, which helps all of us to feel more comfortable being ourselves at work. “IDAHOBIT is about challenging bigoted behaviour, but also celebrating that people are just people, whatever their gender, sexuality, ability, race, job title, or political affiliation.” Picture: Debbie Kennard, Louise Goldsmith and station commander Lee Walton with members of WSCC’s LGBT+ group and WSFRS firefighters

A former Sussex vicar has been sentenced to 38 months imprisonment after admitting sex assaults on a young girl almost 40 years ago. Brian Spence, 78, also known as Macduff, a former Church of England priest, of Sutton Road, Shrewsbury, pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court on Monday 21 May, to three offences of indecent assault on the girl then aged between 10 and 12, in Warnham, West Sussex between 1978 and 1980. The court heard that he indecently assaulted the girl at two locations in Warnham, one of which was Warnham parish church where he was the vicar at the time and in
the girl’s home. Sussex Police detectives investigated the allegations, which were received for the first time in 2016, and worked closely with the Diocese of Chichester’s Safeguarding Team who have actively supported the investigation. Police emphasise that there are no current safeguarding issues for the church or the local Warnham community in relation to the investigation. Detective Constable Michaela Pearce said; “The victim, who came forward for the first time in October 2016, met Spence through church activities when he became vicar at the church in 1974. He
took advantage of her innocence and vulnerability, on one occasion assaulting her in the church belfry on the pretext of giving her a bellringing lesson, and also in her own home. “She eventually managed to distance herself from him when she moved to secondary school and used the excuse of having extra homework to avoid spending time at the church. “She kept this distressing childhood experience to her herself for nearly forty years, eventually finding the courage to come forward. “When interviewed Spence denied the offending, and only on the first day of what was to be his trial did he admit the offences. The victim was ready to give evidence in court but fortunately the guilty pleas meant she didn’t have to do that. “We are glad that justice has been done for the victim after all these years. This case shows once again that we will take seriously and investigate all allegations of such offences, no matter how long ago they are said to have occurred, and the historical element should not be a reasons for victims not to come forward.” Anyone who wishes to report such offending or is aware of anyone else being a victim can contact the police at any time on 101 or online and arrange to talk in confidence to experienced investigators. Sources of advice and support are also available on the Sussex Police website.
Help my NHS to give me the best care
NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG are hoping to rally support by urging people to purchase their own medicines for short term ailments, over the counter at a pharmacy, stating that this action would help to free millions of pounds for frontline services. In a statement, the health authority pointed out that, with many common ailments, patients can treat themselves using medicines bought over the counter at a pharmacy – without the need for a prescription: “It’s easier, quicker, cheaper.” Dr Laura Hill, the clinical chair and medicines management clinical lead at NHS Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), is responsible for buying and planning health services for the local population. She explained: “We are urging patients to help their NHS by buying some medicines from their local pharmacy or as part of their basic household grocery shop and using them to selftreat minor illnesses rather than seeking a prescription through a GP appointment. “By encouraging more of our patients to self-care by buying
over the counter medicines, such as paracetamols and antihistamines, we will have more money to spend on nurses, cancer treatments and GP services. It costs the NHS much more to prescribe these drugs than it does for a patient to buy them. This is not an efficient use of available resources – the NHS belongs to all of us, so please use it responsibly.” You can help your NHS by buying your own medicines for: • travel sickness • hayfever and other allergies • indigestion or upset stomach • pain and fever • dry skin • coughs, colds and sore throats Pharmacists can assess your symptoms, advise you on how to care for yourself and help you buy the medicine you need. You don’t need an appointment and many pharmacies are open late and at weekends. Every year in Sussex and East Surrey we spend more than £10 million prescribing medicines and products that are easily available to buy over the counter. A pack of painkillers costs around 30p from a pharmacy, whereas the cost to the NHS is more than £35 (when all costs are included.) Every £1million saved on unnecessary prescriptions could instead fund around: • 39 community nurses • 270 hip replacements
• 66 treatments for breast cancer Dr Riz Miarkowski, medicines management clinical lead at NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG, added: “We want to educate people on how they can #HelpMyNHS by treating their own short-term minor illnesses and those of their children, with guidance from a local pharmacist if needed. Of course GPs will still be able to prescribe these medicines in exceptional circumstances, such as when patients are experiencing long-term or more complex conditions, but in the majority of cases getting a prescription for travel sickness pills or anti-dandruff shampoo just isn’t necessary.” People who receive free prescriptions will not automatically be exempt from the guidance. For patients where the clinician considers that their ability to self-manage is compromised as a consequence of medical, mental health or significant social vulnerability; these patients will continue to receive prescriptions for over the counter items subject to the item being clinically effective. The NHS belongs to you so please use it responsibly – #HelpMyNHS For more information on selfcare and local NHS services, visit www.sussexhelpmy.nhs.uk

Route confirmed for inaugural 100-mile closed-road sportive
To celebrate this milestone, organisers are giving West Sussex residents a second chance to ride the first-ever Vélo South, by offering them a guaranteed General Entry place. The first-ever Vélo South sold out of all its General Entry places, in just four days, and it is expected to raise millions for local and national charities. The additional General Entries that have been ring-fenced for local residents will provide them with a second chance to enter the first ever Vélo South. To purchase one of these General Entries, West Sussex residents must email hello@ velosouth.com with a proof of address. Taking place on Sunday, 23 September, 2018, the first-ever Vélo South will take 15,000 riders of all abilities on an unforgettable journey through the stunning West Sussex countryside, passing through Chichester and Horsham District Councils, and also featuring the magnificent rolling hills of the South Downs National Park. The route will showcase historic West Sussex towns and villages,
along with some of the most dramatic countryside views in England. With around 1,700m of climbing, Vélo South is relatively challenging, but the beauty of the route, support from local communities, and camaraderie with fellow riders, will make for a truly unforgettable day of closed-road riding. The Vélo South ‘Community Celebration Programme’ has been set up to provide support and advice to local businesses, residents and community groups who want to host events, and initiatives that will help their community make the most of event day and spread the celebratory atmosphere throughout the region. Ideas might range from cyclingthemed pub garden BBQs, a bike decoration competition, or a cake sale to raise funds for community programmes. In addition to the extra release of General Entries, prospective participants can also secure a place on the start line through one of the event’s Lead Charity Partners – Alzheimer’s Society,
Age UK, Restart Rugby and the British Heart Foundation – or via the Vélo South Business 100 challenge, which offers VIP networking opportunities and a training event. Spectators lining the route, hoping to see some famous faces ride past, won’t be disappointed as among the 15,000 cyclists, taking on the inaugural Vélo South, will be World Cup-winning England Rugby legend Martin Johnson CBE, Olympic rowing champion Mark Hunter MBE, and Olympic 400m champion (and proud local girl!) Sally Gunnell OBE, who is riding for lead charity Age UK West Sussex. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, said: “We are delighted that this major cycling event is now at a phase when the route has been finalised, and local residents and businesses can plan how and where they are going to take part in the event. It is set to be a real spectacle for Horsham District, and will provide an excellent opportunity to showcase our unique district at its best.” Alister Linton-Crook, Cycling Officer for the South Downs National Park, said: “We’re looking forward to seeing local people getting involved with Vélo South; whether they’re on the start line, volunteering, welcoming visitors to their cafés and B&Bs, or just cheering everyone on through the National Park. We’re sure that many South Downs businesses will benefit from the day itself and when cyclists return to explore the National Park further.” For more information about Vélo South, please visit: www. velosouth.com Facebook.com/Velosouth100 Twitter.com/Velosouth
Sun lovers urged to protect themselves from harm Local health experts are urging people to protect themselves against the sun, to reduce the risk of skin cancer. Sunburn increases the risk of skin cancer and you can burn in Horsham and Mid Sussex, even when it’s cloudy. Skin cancer is very common in England. There are two main types of skin cancer: the more common, but less serious, non-melanoma, and malignant melanoma. Figures show that Horsham and Mid Sussex is significantly above the national average for incidents of malignant melanoma, with 35.8 cases per 100,000 people, higher than the national average of 23.3 per 100,000.
NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG recommends following these tips to stay safe in the sun: Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm Make sure you never burn Cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses Take extra care with children Use at least factor 15 sunscreen Dr Minesh Patel, Clinical Chair at Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG, said: “We are urging residents to be aware of the dangers of being in the sun without protection. “Going into shade, wearing clothing and sunglasses, and using sunscreen which is at least factor 15 with good UV-A protection on all exposed skin, will help reduce the risks we all face

when going out in the sun for long periods.” Anyone who notices a change to a mole, freckle or normal patch of skin, should tell their doctor. The earlier skin cancer is caught, the easier it is to treat. More information on spotting the symptoms of skin cancer is available from NHS Choices. For those who do get sunburn, the NHS recommends having a cold bath or shower to cool down the skin, or you can sponge your skin with cold water or hold a cold flannel against it. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. And apply soothing lotions, such as those containing Aloe Vera, to moisturise the skin.

Alison’s first Sussex Vermouth is a winner alcohol Vermouth has hints of orange, marmalade even. But in cocktails it takes on a new dimension. I tried the Vermouth in a few cocktails while on a family visit to the Midlands and it makes a crisp, clean and sophisticated contribution. Mixed with elderflower presse, angostura bitters, and Bombay Sapphire gin it makes a sweetish cocktail that might appeal to those who enjoyed off-dry wines rather than bone-dry. This excellent vermouth has good acidity to ensure some backbone to any cocktail combination. The 40 Vermouth shines at its brilliant best in a straight dry martini, a 50-50 blend of the vermouth and the equally fine Whitley Neill gin. When the informal “panel” tried the Vermouth with a blend of ginger ale and Bombay Sapphire, and the vermouth certainly stood its corner. As in all cocktails, the blend could easily be tweaked to allow the vermouth to make more of a statement. A Negroni cocktail of 40 Vermouth, gin, and Campari was one of the most popular for its under-stated elegance and attractive colour. For those who like life uncomplicated a simple 50-50 blend of 40 Vermouth and tonic is a clean and crisp taste. This is a hugely versa-
tile Vermouth. Alison is proud that this quintessentially English vermouth is unique, not least because it uses grapes solely from her 11-hectare Sussex vineyard near Hurstpierpoint. The 40 botanicals blended is a much higher number than normal for vermouth, and were selected with her Italian wine consultant Salvatore Leone. The 40 Vermouth uses many herbs and other ingredients which are grown in the English countryside – including rosemary, thyme, rose petals and chamomile – alongside citrus peels, more exotic spices such as saffron and cardamom and the unexpected, like coffee beans and tea. This results in a complex and elegant drink which can be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or instead of a dessert wine and is good with many foods. All in all this new 40 Vermouth is a fine addition and Alison is to be congratulated on making such a superb drink in the heart of Sussex. Love and Marriage: Horsham MASH recognised in a recent Ofsted inspection Museum’s latest exhibition The significant work carried out to develop the county’s MultiAgency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) for children has been recognised in a recent Ofsted inspection. The MASH is designed to be the first place a professional, or resident, can turn to if they have a concern over the safety and wellbeing of a child, and is made up of a wide range of partners, including West Sussex County Council, Sussex Police and Health. The recent Ofsted inspection in March reviewed the Local Authority’s arrangements for contacts and referrals into the MASH and thresholds for early help, children in need, and those in need of protection. Inspectors reviewed a range of evidence, including children’s case records, case discussions with social workers and managers and supervision files. Within the report, the Ofsted Inspector highlights: “Since the last inspection of children’s services in 2015, there has been significant work across the partnership to develop the multi-agency safeguarding hub. “Partners benefit from being co-located, with greater opportunity for joint working, though not all information sharing is effective yet. Other highlights noted in the report include: timely decisions and decisive action to protect children at risk of harm; the newly formed senior leadership team is clear about the work needed to secure improvement; strategy
meetings held in the MASH ensure a joined-up response to concerns regarding children’s welfare; and partners have responded effectively, committing additional resource and offering solutions to support improvements. Staff spoken to by inspectors were positive about working for West Sussex. They said they felt well supported by managers and have access to training and development opportunities. Stephen Hillier, County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “The MASH is still in its infancy, as it was first launched in 2016 after it was recognised that there was a need for a new joined up system with partners across health, social care, and police. The Ofsted report noted more work was needed to provide an efficient service for all children; observing that systems are overcomplex, with too much duplication and too many decision-making points. It also said that some children in need wait too long to get help, and ‘this has been more evident in recent weeks, when the service has experienced additional pressures’. Inspectors also recognised that the current MASH Improvement Plan had already identified areas for improvement, and all safeguarding partners had taken action to address these. To view the report, please visit: https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/ local-authorities/west-sussex.
Love and Marriage, the latest exhibition at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery will delight anyone, even the most “confirmed Batchelor”. It will especially please fans of romantic television programmes, such as “First Dates”, “Don’t Tell the Bride”, “Say Yes to the Dress”, “Dinner Date”, or even “Love Island”. The stunning wedding dresses on display would capture anyone’s attention; from hand embroidered Chinese silk, imported in the 1860s to make a dress fit for a Mayor’s wife, to a shocking pink dress for a fashion-conscious 1970s bride. Drawing on Horsham Museum’s extensive collection of wedding
dresses that span 200 years, all donated by the public, this exhibition is a visual treat. On display are very rare grey Quaker bride and groom outfits, dating to the 1820s - 15 years before Queen Victoria set the new trend for white dresses. Yet, Love and Marriage offers more than just these sartorial delights. The museum is showcasing photographs (spanning 150 years of Horsham’s history) that show couples, families and friends enjoying their special day together. Through original documents and fascinating antique texts, the exhibition will look at the ways in which the institutions of love and marriage have changed over the centuries, and offer insights into our romantic lives.
For many people, marriage marked the end of the arduous task of finding a partner. Visitors can see the satirical prints from the cartoonist Thomas Rowlandson’s work, Dr Syntax, whose efforts in seeking a bride amused Regency England. For those with land and property, arranged marriages could cement an economic transaction, and ensure the preservation of the family line. Love and Marriage looks at the history of wedded bliss, and the varied methods, and reasons for entering into marriage. Thanks to the generosity of the people of Horsham District, the exhibition also contains a digital slideshow of photographs of weddings spanning the generations. These wonderful images show the changing fashions and tastes of the last 100 years. With books written about love and romance, an 18th century sexual guide, documents outlining 17th century marriage settlements, and a range of wedding certificates dating from the Victorian era through to modern Civil Partnerships, Love and Marriage is an exhibition for all those who have a romantic heart, and will remind them of their own first loves, first dates, and wedding days. Love and Marriage opened on 21 April and will run until 7 July 2018. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am5pm, free admission. And, a much appreciated tea room – Toad Hall - has been added, sporting mouth watering cakes and other delightful delicacies. As a free house the Frog supports local brewers and the light lunches showcase tasty food from our district, too. The Frog was formerly run by Jim and Janet Reynolds, sadly Jim died in 2010 and when Janet passed away two years later the pub closed, with its future uncertain. Its closure created an aching void in the local community. The Frog is not so much a pub as a community activity centre, a venue for Easter egg hunts and tobogganing for the children, tugs of war for their parents and family barbecues, bonfire nights and carol singing. Classic car shows, the April Fool uphill cycling challenge, wine tastings, monthly quizzes, music nights and Morris dancing are all well attended social events, too. As is the informal golf society and special anniversary events, like St George’s and St Patrick’s days. When the Frog and Nightgown closed the regulars formed The Displaced Froglets’ Action Group, to save the pub because they felt
a real loss of a valued community amenity. The Frog provides an opportunity for a complete cross section of ages to get together to enjoy a unique range of diverse activities. Reopening and re-launching the Frog has been a labour of love for the now well established landlord Lewis Gatt and his friendly staff, Lewis telling the District Post: “I was brought up near here and it is wonderful to have the Frog back open, rather than see it converted into two cottages, which might have happened. It is great to be able to greet familiar faces again – and to make new friends among our lovely visitors. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to reintroduce all of the entertaining activities that were so popular before the Frog closed – our live music evenings, are particularly well received!” Originally the Frog was known as The Royal Oak, but when Jim and Janet Reynolds took it over it was renamed as The Frog and Nightgown because that was the imaginary pub at which Jim’s favourite comedian Ted Ray used to seek solace, as was frequently mentioned in his radio shows. Local Rhino in hottest marathon challenge
The 2018 London Marathon was the hottest on record as soaring temperatures topped 24C for over 40,000 runners, and rhinos. An incredible 14 rhinos took on the 26.2 mile challenge this year and one of the crash included a particularly fine example of the species from Sussex. and long-distance swimming events in his stride but, by his own admission, undertaking a stamina sapping marathon in a boiling hot rhino costume was a physical test like no other he has ever experienced. Will said:“It wasn’t so much the weight of the costume that made the run so difficult, it was the awkwardness of the running position I had to adopt once in it. Visibility was so poor that I could only see as far as the shoes of the runner in front of me, my bent posture was causing back ache before even reaching the start line, having to
hold the rhino head still while running destroys the arms and shoulders, not to mention the scorching heat and the fact that they ran out of water for long stretches of the course. “However, all the discomforts and the 5lbs I lost on the day were worth it knowing that the £3,000 I’ve raised so far will help protect this magnificent animal, at a time when three of the remaining five rhino species are facing imminent extinction. Last month the last male Northern White Rhino died, leaving just two female rhinos of that species alive. Poaching and the loss of habitat are the two principle reasons why the future of rhinos has reached a crisis point. In just a decade, more than 7,245 rhinos have been lost to poaching in Africa alone, which is more than a quarter of the remaining population in the World. Save the Rhino is working to halt the twin threats of poaching and habitat loss so that, by 2036, black rhinos, Sumatran rhinos and Javan rhinos will no longer be classified as critically endangered. Entrepreneurs for the Future
Entrepreneurs from law, public relations and cybercrime to insurance and consulting gathered at Christ’s Hospital last month (26 April) for a networking event with sixth form pupils. Following an introduction by David Mellor, founder of a leading mentoring and consultancy business helping people’s transition to entrepreneurial careers and author of several books on entrepreneurship, the members of the Guild of Entrepreneurs shared their experiences. Whether it be to start up a business or for advice on how to be successful in employment, the event provided pupils with valuable insight and new networks. As well as talks and a Q&A session, there was plenty of time for networking with the entrepreneurs. Several CH pupils had already benefited from work experience through the Guild’s members. Emilia, 18, commented: “Neo and I have been involved in building a strong connection with the Guild of Entrepreneurs over the past

year. Our first meeting was at the networking event last March at CH, where we met Nicola Manning; the head of development and education for the Guild. Subsequently, we were invited to attend a networking event held by the Guild in London, where we met a variety of very interesting, successful and inspiring entrepreneurs who all had vastly different businesses. Since that event, Neo and I had the opportunity to shadow two important businessmen; Simon Fordham and Robert Ferguson, who helped us gain an insight into their respective professions. CH has also developed links with Mandy Haberman, inventor of the self-seal cup, her visit being a fascinating experience for our DT department. “The announcement of an entrepreneur active (club), starting next year, will be an incredible opportunity. For those who offer these truly invaluable opportunities, we can’t thank the Guild of Entrepreneurs enough.”

An ancient magic is returning to Horsham Park this summer, so prepare to be Enchanted…… Enchanted Horsham is an exciting family festival with illuminated pleasure gardens that will take place from 4pm to Midnight on the 27th, 28th and 29th July, and one special guest, Princess the Enchanted Unicorn is capturing the limelight. As old as time itself and magically awakened from her slumber, she is so very special. But the question Enchanted Horsham is being asked by unicorn fans over and over is does she have wings? The easy answer to that is no, as unicorns do not have wings. But to make it easier for parents to explain to any sad or confused enchanted princesses, here are the reasons why. Princess is a beautiful and magical unicorn. Unicorns are horse like creatures with a single, pointed, spiralling horn projecting from their forehead. They are usually white, have a long mane and tail, but they do not have wings.
However, a Pegasus is a mythical heavenly stallion with wings. Again they are most often white and yes they can fly! But if you are looking for a horse with both a horn and wings, you need to seek out an Alicorn, which has the horn of a unicorn and the wings of a Pegasus. And, Alicorns can also sometimes known as Pegacorns. So there you have it. Come and see our stunning unicorn for yourself at Enchanted Horsham’s Summer Wonderland. Infused with sights and sounds for all ages to enjoy, you can also experience first-hand the street theatre and a vintage funfair, circus performances, circus workshops and belly dancers, along with a market celebrating local lifestyle and fashion, street food and drink. as well as lesser known tracks such as Rock A Hula Baby and Bossa Nova Baby. Actor and singer, Mario Kombou, has been performing as Elvis for over 20 years: “I cannot believe how much the show has grown in 10 years: From the days of Jailhouse Rock; to the early days of creating this incredible production; and now to performing at sold out shows in some of the best venues in the country. This year’s Summer Concert by Christ’s Hospital Choral Society features British and American composers, offering you the opportunity to enjoy live performances of compositions by musical marvels Bernstein, Holst, Stanford, Parry and more. The concert is titled My soul, there is a country, music composed by Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry (*1848, Bournemouth – †1918, Rustington). Music lovers will be familiar with his work, but Parry is in fact a composer whose work
everybody knows – it was he who wrote the rousing Jerusalem. While Parry was influenced by Bach and Brahms, he in turn inspired Elgar and Vaughan Williams. And an interesting detail for car aficionados; Parry loved driving automobiles. He drove a Panhard and a Gladiator, apparently at such speed that his might have been the first speed ticket ever written. It is said that anyone accompanying him on the journey would have felt the need for a strong restorative once arrived at their destination.
Apart from My soul, there is a country, the choir will interpret work varying from the cheery I sowed the Seeds of Love to the cheeky My Evaline, or the energetic Quick we have but a second to the ethereal Bluebird. A number of songs, amongst which My Evaline, has been arranged by the choir’s new Musical Director, Alex Hodgkinson, who will also be conducting the concert. Soprano, Olga Parr, will join the choir and give a solo performance. It’s going to be a treat!
While the choir’s Christmas concert resulted in a £1000 donation to St. Catherine’s Hospice, this concert will support Chestnut Tree House. After the concert, refreshments will be served in aid of the children’s hospice. For tickets, please contact the box office on 01403 247434 (Mornings only) or speak to a choir member. Please join the choir on Friday 15 June, 7.30PM at the Chapel, Christ’s Hospital. You will have a lovely night!

Chris Barber OBE (87) is one of the last British Jazz legends around and an icon of traditional jazz in United Kingdom. For nearly 70 years he has been active on the music scene promoting, recording and releasing music, and touring with his band. The 10-piece band, inspired by great Ken Colyer Jazz Men, features everything from New Orleans to blues to late 20’s Ellington, played with extraordinary panache and skill. On this special night, you will hear all this and Chris’ favourites, like Bourbon Street Parade, Jubilee Stomp, Petite Fleur, Ice Cream, When the Saints Go Marching In, and many more. Chris has been credited as one of the initiators of pop music today, as he gave stage to many American blues musicians for the first time in Europe. Musicians like Muddy Waters, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and Big Bill Broonzy. These musicians later inspired bands like Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Eric Clapton. The band stand out as one of the finest, if not the finest, of its kind anywhere in the world. You can count on an exciting evening of high quality jazz and blues, which will appeal in equal measure to the aficionado and the newcomer. As well as big bands in the Theatre, there are also more intimate ways to enjoy Jazz at The Hawth. On Sunday 3 June, you can enjoy a delicious Jazz Lunch in the company of Shireen Francis. ‘Believed to date from 1649, there are character features in abundance’
This magnificent period property offers you the dream move to a house in the countryside, with open farmland & mature woodland surrounding the cottage. Believed to date from 1649, there are character features in abundance. This home is cosy in winter and flourishes in summer. Positioned in a country lane within the highly affluent area of The Haven, Billingshurst the plot enjoys a south westerly aspect to the side and rear with open fields beyond the boundary. Summer days into the evenings can be enjoyed in the wonderful

garden and the pool, complete with terrace and pool house. The accommodation is accessed from a pitched gabled entrance into a lobby, which is perfect for the removal and storage of shoes and coats. Passing through the door into a glorious room with exposed beams, inglenook fireplace with log burner one end and a smaller arched fireplace the other, the sitting room is impressive. There is an opening to the stairs rising and a door into the kitchen/ dining space.A remarkable balance has been struck in the kitchen to create a modern, luxurious, contemporary fitted kitchen that
sympathetically blends with the integrity of the period features. It has the perfect set up with views to the gardens, space for a dining table and chairs as well as stools around the breakfast bar. The space is served by a utility room and ground floor shower room. There is an attractive bay window and door to the garden via anoth-
er lobby from the family/ dining room. For those especially seeking the quirks of a period home, the first floor delivers. Naturally en-suite bathrooms and modern day demands were not on the architect’s mind when arranging this fine timber framed building, but the result is fun whilst still practical. There are four bedrooms upstairs, three of which are found from the landing and of those one has a large dressing recess from it as well as dual aspect to front and side. Another has a front aspect window with the third has a window to the side.A spacious bathroom has a corner bath and wash hand basin inset to vanity unit, as well as the W.C. A door leads from the bathroom on to the fourth bedroom and beyond that another room with restricted head height, currently used as a play room.In our opinion the plot is sensibly arranged, with a modern electronic gate and enclosed at the front in part by brick wall and part mature hedgerow. There is a large shingle driveway providing parking for numerous vehicles. The double garage has in part been seconded to create a home office with power, light and heaters and it is attached to the impressive two storey pool house. Extensive rear gardens are just the ticket for the green fingered and those seeking sporting pursuits alike. The pool terrace has been generated into a fantastic entertaining area and parties of over a hundred and fifty people have become regular occurrence. Jagota destroys Billingshurst in Cup Sunday May 27 - Sussex G ray-Nicholls T20 Cup – Round 1 Roffey 130-8 (20 overs) – Billingshurst 26 all out (9.2 overs) Roffey won by 104 runs Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter After putting Roffey in to bat at Jubilee Fields, Billingshurst will wish to expunge the memory of this game and move on as quickly as possible. Although Roffey started quietly in the face of an excellent opening spell by Andy Barr, they went on to post a demanding total and then ran through the hosts in less than half of their 20 over allocation. Openers Ben Manenti and Matt Davies were both dropped, before Manenti – who recently scored 130 opening the batting for Kent 2nd XI versus Gloucester - fenced at a wide delivery leaving Roffey 20-1 after four overs. Barr then trapped Davies LBW off a ball that kept low and then got through Usman Khan’s defence, reducing Roffey to 26-3 from seven overs. Rohit Jagota played himself in and then danced down the wicket to plant a six over long off and hit a four to the distant western boundary to take the score to 71-3 at the end of the 12th over. Two more Jagota straight sixes provided further acceleration, and when he was caught on the mid wicket boundary the score was 99-4 with five overs remaining. With
Roffey on the charge, two wickets fell in the next over, including Jibran Khan for an entertaining 30. Another scalp then brought the Fleming brothers together – Josh and George - and although Josh was out for 15, a target of 131 was always likely to be challenging on a greenish wicket and containing outfield, especially considering Roffey’s customary tight bowling and slick fielding. Barr, Captain Ben Williams and Louis Storey each took two wickets, Barr’s hostile 2-15 being outstanding, especially given the ‘pace off’ nature of the wicket. In the interval opinions varied as to the outcome, with both sides expressing confidence, but Jagota told us: “That was a difficult wicket to bat on - with our bowling attack 120 would be a good score.” Yet, at 12-0 there was no hint of impending disaster - until Jagota suddenly dismissed the first five Billingshurst batsmen, reducing the hosts to a parlous 21-5 in the sixth over. And, 21 balls later, aided by a trademark run out, Billingshurst had been shot out for 26, the last four batsmen falling on that score. Eight batsmen accumulated two runs between them, six failing to score, the top contribution of eight being matched by extras. Jagota took 5-6 in three overs to add to his earlier 35. Roffey will travel to Church Lane, Chichester to play former Premier League side Stirlands in the next round on Sunday June 10th.
Roffey still top with win over Cuckfield Saturday May 26 – Sussex Premier League Cuckfield 103 all out (37.1 overs) Roffey 107-0 (20.4) Roffey won 10 wickets – Roffey 30 points – Cuckfield nil Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Sport can be a great leveller – last week Aussie Big Bash player Sam Whiteman scored a match-winning 130 with 15 fours and three sixes, but at Roffey, after the hosts had won the toss, he was out for a duck – driving without due care and attention – third ball of the match. Cuckfield are not a one band and were not demoralised by Whiteman’s dismissal, but it nevertheless set the seal on Roffey’s overwhelming victory by 4pm. Former Horsham batsman Joe Ludlow – who had tormented Roffey with a match winning 117 not out at Cuckfield last year - travelled from university at Cardiff for the game, top-scoring with a patient 39. But, only three other batsmen reached double figures, extras being the second highest contributor with 16. Rohit Jagota dismissed
both openers, before after three wayward overs, Sussex’s Stuart Whittingham, bowling fast and straight from the top end, ripped the heart out of Cuckfield’s batting, taking four wickets, in 14 blistering balls, minimizing the visitors to 67-6, causing urgency in the catering department to set out Roffey’s legendary between the innings tea. Cuckfield were unable to stage a meaningful recovery, Jagota (3-17 off a frugal 9.1 overs), Alex Collins, on his seasonal debut, and – adding to his two earlier catches – Ben Manenti, mopping up the remaining batsmen to condemn Cuckfield to a woefully inadequate 103 all out. Roffey Captain Matt Davies felt that 170 would have been a par score on the damp wicket. Jagota said: “This is not a 103 all out wicket, getting their star player out early put them on the back foot and they played some loose shots, really.” Cuckfield, however, suggested that 103 might be defendable, but that proved to be whistling in the dark to keep their spirits up. When Roffey replied Cuckfield employed eight bowlers, but Roffey openers Theo Rivers and Jagota are both in good form, knocking off the runs without
alarms, almost 30 overs being unused, Rivers finishing on 41 not out, with Jagota unbeaten on 64. Earlier Whittingham had been on a hat trick, somehow averted, and he told the District Post: “I was struggling a bit at first, but once I got my rhythm it went really well!” Matt Davies added: “It was just a case of our bowlers bowling well – there was nothing wrong with the pitch, as confirmed by Theo and Rohit.” Despite Roffey being without Leigh Harrison, on holiday, and Luke Barnard, sidelined with rotator cuff injury putting his shoulder out of action for around six weeks – the depth of their reserves enabled them to brush aside normally useful Cuckfield, Coach Simon Fearnley saying: “Had we been 35-3 then we might have been under pressure, but even then I wouldn’t have been unduly worried because our batsmen have all been in good nick.” Cuckfield admitted that the wicket was not to blame for their poor display, their disappointed Coach, ex Sussex and Surrey player Chris Waller, summing up with: “We were hoping to see the same as last week from Whiteman, but these things happen in cricket.” On Saturday Roffey visit near neighbours Ifield.
Horsham move up table with first win Saturday May 26 - Sussex Premier League Ifield 207-8 (50 0vers) – Horsham 210-3 (36.1) Horsham won by 7 wickets – Horsham 28 points Ifield 9 Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Ifield won the toss and elected to bat, despite the (misplaced) threat of thunder storms – and they set off like a train, suggesting that Horsham might be chasing a big target, but their Mike Norris said: “We slowed down in mid innings and didn’t rotate the strike as well as we should have done and in the end we did well to pass 200.” At 134-2 Ifield were well placed, with former Roffey players Norris – a match-winning centurian last week – and Dan Smith seemingly well set. But, when they were both out – Norris for 34 and Smith for 41 – wickets fell at regular intervals, Joe Ashmore and Paul Williams bowling 16 overs between them, taking 2-40. Although seven Ifield batsmen made double figures, nobody went on to make
a result-changing score, Sussex’s Will Beer, almost back to full fitness, taking 2-41 and MCC Young cricketer Nick Oxley 2-47. When Horsham responded, Ifield overseas player Andrew McGorian, also previously with Roffey, dismissed Horsham openers Tom Clark and Craig Gallagher, but not before they had posted a sound 76 run platform. Then, Beer, who makes such a big difference to the Horsham side with both bat and ball, made a controlled unbeaten 56 and Michael Thornely 47, before Oxley, in partnership with Beer, secured Horsham’s comfortable win. On a day when all four Horsham teams won, a most welcome, if rare event, Horsham skipper Michael Thornely told the District Post: “We’ve had a tough start considering last season’s league positions of our opponents thus far, so it was good to have Beero back and get a win. We bowled poorly at the start today, gifting them 50 runs, it was a ‘pace off’ wicket and the slower bowlers bowled better. At this early stage of the season it’s difficult to know where we’re at, but we need consistency. We’ve got
some good young players coming through and we’d like to develop some of them, including Tom and Joe Clark, who both played well for us today.” Tomorrow (Saturday), Horsham, now 7th, travel to the furthest extreme of the Premier League – Hastings, who were bowled out for 141 last Saturday in reply to Eastbourne’s 262-7, for whom Jordan Turner made 118 not out. Elsewhere in the Premier League, Brighton and Hove, boosted by ex Sussex pro Matt Machan, who opens the bowling for them and bats at three, have newly discovered batting form, posting 235-9 before bowling mercurial Middleton out for a paltry 88, Chis Mates taking 5-19 off just 4.4 overs. And, in the most dramatic match of the day – at East Grinstead – the hosts subsided to 123 all out, Ollie Graham making 53 with only one other batsman reaching double figures. Yet, Grinstead won by 13 runs, Preston Nomads collapsing to 110 all out, former Sussex left armer Lewis Hatchett taking 7-29.

Horsham overseas Matt Henry taking wickets for fun
Billingshurst bounce back with confident win Saturday May 26 - Sussex League Division 2 Billingshurst 235-5 (45 overs) St James’s Montefiore 178 all out (38.5) Billingshurst won by 57 runs – Billingshurst 30 points – Lindfield 7 Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Following their disappointing defeat against St James’s Montefiore the previous week, Billingshurst were pleased to come away with a convincing win against bottom club Lindfield. Invited to bat at Lindfield Common, Billingshurst soon lost a wicket, but a 189 partnership between Captain Tom Haynes and Stuart Barber put them in a strong position. Haynes was eventually run out for 102 and even though Barber was dismissed soon afterwards – for 87 – Billingshurst were able to set a testing 236 run requirement after seven Lindfield bowlers had been unable to make sufficient inroads. When Lindfield replied Jamie Piper dismissed Charlie Weir and Andy Barr took the next two wickets to reduce the hosts to 46-3, until an 82 run partnership between Tom Hinley and
former Roffey player, Captain Simon (Shiv) Shivnarain, restored Lindfield to a healthier 128-4. But, there was still a long way to go and once Hinley was out for 23 and Shiv for 68, Billingshurst romped home with overs to spare as Barr (4-37) and Ben Williams (4-42) scythed through the middle order and tail. Williams told the District Post: “Tom (Haynes) and Stuart (Barber) rotated the strike brilliantly, putting us in a good position. Then Andy Barr bowled really well again, using all of his experience and know how – and, although he didn’t take a wicket, Andy Miller bowled well, too, moving the ball around without any luck. Shiv hit the gaps well for them, but it was a good win, moving us up to fifth. Tom bowled three great overs, full of yorkers before taking himself off and I must pay tribute to Louis Storey – he’s only just turned 16, but he’s a great talent for the future, with both bat and ball. It is do-able for us to get back into the Premier League – if we’re consistent!” On Saturday Billingshurst return home to entertain Bexhill, who were relegated from the Premier League last season and now occupy the penultimate berth in Division 2.
After joining Sussex from Horsham, Jofra Archer has become a hot property round the English county circuit and far beyond, earning a lucrative IPL contract. And, this season another former Horsham overseas player – Matt Henry – is hitting the headlines, leading the national bowling averages with 37 wickets for Kent in just four matches – at a miserly 9.59 average. Henry, a right arm fast medium bowler from Christchurch New Zealand won a one year scholarship to St Joseph’s College in Ipswich before spending the 2011 season with Horsham as a 19 year old. He subsequently began his First Class career with Canterbury in his home country, going on to make his Test debut against England at Lord’s in 2015. Henry then had spells with Worcester-
shire in 2016 and Derbyshire the year after that and has played 9 Tests, 35 ODIs and T20s, too. He has had an IPL contract but strangely did not get into the Black Caps Test side during England’s recent tour of New Zealand. So far this season for Kent he has taken 8 wickets against Glamorgan, 12 against Durham, including a career best 7-45, and 10 in the match against Sussex, Kent winning all three games. And, just for good measure, he smashed five fours and three sixes in a vital 55 in the Sussex match ahead of taking 6-53 to set up Kent’s win. Also, in Kent’s recent Royal London Cup game against high flying Hampshire he held his nerve to deny them the mere four runs that they needed from the last over of the match, enabling Kent
to win the high scoring contest by one run. Henry, the leading wicket-taker in the county championship this season, has now claimed at least three scalps in all eight innings in which he has bowled, and, unsurprisingly, Kent are in negotiation to see whether his 7 match County Championship and one day cup contract can be extended to the duration of the entire 2018 season. Meanwhile, Matt Henry’s time at Horsham Cricket Club is fondly remembered – Horsham President Barry Peay telling the District Post: “I met him through our Thurs XI, where he made a good team member as a very personable young man. I’m glad he’s done well.”
