Horsham’s popular AmeriCARna Event is back – bigger and better With new venues, more cars, more entertainment and added sports, Horsham Americarna, on Sunday 30 September, is all set to build on the huge success of last year’s first celebration of all things American. There will be car displays from the Bishopric and the Forum through to East Street and the Carfax, a new race car zone with service vehicles in front of The REC rooms bowling alley, and additional car and bike displays in Horsham Park. The event is organised by Horsham District Council and partners, in aid of St.Catherine’s Hospice, and sponsors include Horsham Car Centre JEEP, Pilgrim Motorsports of Small Dole, Maidstone Harley Davidson and Christs Hospital School. As the event grows, more town businesses are getting involved this year, including Mr. Simms, who will have their American sweet trailer in Horsham Park with the new limited edition Crystal Pepsi on sale. Toy Barnhaus will give away a free collector’s edition hot wheels car with every purchase. The Crown Pub will offer drinks promotions, tea/coffee and an evening quiz, and Horsham Wine Cellar will have a special sampling of American wines. A best dressed guy and gal competition is being run by Retro-

esque, who will return to the town in the Carfax for the day, and the Bishopric’s Apache Menswear. So dress up in your best ‘50s/’60s gear and join in the fun by taking a selfie at the show #horshamamericarna and #retroesque or #apache – you might win a prize! There will be market stalls and street food in the Bishopric, the Carfax and Horsham Park - all will have a distinctly American look and feel and focus on American menus. Hepworths are sponsoring an American Beer Trail, starting in the Carfax, with a prize draw supported by Brewhouse & Kitchen. Music and musical theatre acts will perform on the bandstand, in the Nature Garden, and The REC Rooms stages, from late morning to 3pm when The Almost Elvis Band present the finale show before the vehicles cruise away from 4pm. A musical surprise is in store for those in Carfax after the town centre cars leave, so be sure to stick around for the Park Cars cruise out. The REC Rooms (below the Bowling Alley) are also the venue for classic American slot car racing by Horsham Rotary, the Southern Seeboard American railroad layout and the STEAMcademy Music Machine. Other entertainments keeping the buzz going around the town and park, feature a Dixieland

Henfield Social Enterprise, a volunteer led Community Interest Company, has been awarded £65,000 of National Lottery funding to develop its existing building it manages under a long term lease from West Sussex County Council. The new centre, the Henfield Haven, was launched in November 2015 to provide a wide range of much needed services to the local community. These services enable people living with dementia, and other similar conditions, to have access to high quality and inspiring support. In addition, the Haven offers sessions giving isolated people opportunities to meet new people and try new things; these include a range of exercise classes, social activities and therapies. There is also a

café providing refreshments and cooked meals, as well as support for carers and a hearing clinic. Due to the success of particularly the café, the funding from the Big Lottery Fund, the largest funder of community activity across the UK, will enable the project to create extra space, by building an extension onto the external wall of the café. This space will be used to extend the café area, and will enable the range and size of activities on offer to be increased, benefitting local people with illnesses, disabilities and/or who are lonely, as well as providing an extra room to let out to local groups which will help to sustain the key caring operations at the Haven. Heart Research UK – Public Health England’s Heart Age Test A survey of almost two million people, by Public Health England, has revealed that almost 80% of over 30s in the UK have a heart age older than their actual age. The test gives suggestions on lifestyle changes that could improve the overall health of your heart. Alexandra Preston, Head of Lifestyle: Heart Research UK, said: “It’s really important that over 30s look after their heart health, and one of the best places to start is in the workplace. “We spend most of our day at work, and employers need to prioritise the health of their employees, with lost productivity due to ill health costing the UK economy an estimated £77.5 billion. “This research shows that 78% of over 30’s have a heart age higher than their actual age. Some simple lifestyle changes could drastically reduce this figure. “Heart Research UK is committed to helping employers improve their employee’s heart health through our Healthy Heart Mark scheme. “We encourage all businesses to take this opportunity to take positive steps to improving the heart health of their employees.”

overseeing the Haven, said: “We are delighted to have received this National Lottery funding, which will enable us to create much needed extra space at the Haven. The increasing popularity of the centre, since it opened, shows how important it is that we can continue to meet the needs of our local community, particularly those facing and coping with various stages of dementia.” Impact Initiatives, a Sussex based charity, are responsible for the day to day management of the Haven. Lorette Mackie, the Haven’s Manager, said: “Great news. This funding will allow us to meet the increasing local needs for our services”. Claire Webley, Regional Funding Officer for the Big Lottery, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players, communities large and small are able to get the funding they need to bring their great ideas to life. Every time someone buys a National Lottery ticket, it raises vital funds that help make a difference to hundreds of people’s lives. We’re delighted to be able to support projects like Henfield Haven, which is a fantastic example of people coming together to use their ambitions and aspirations to create something wonderful for their local community.” Building work is planned to start in October, with the extension being completed by next March. Downs (Southern) Ltd, a local building company located near Henfield, will carry out the work.

Horsham’s RAF Association open with flying colours martin read

Horsham and Storrington’s Royal Airforce Association’s HQ is a hidden community gem, an oasis based in a building that formed part of the Needles farm, the friendly, cosy club hosting a variety of social activities. On Wednesdays the welcoming members gather for an informal coffee morning and on other days ploughman’s lunches are caringly prepared in the club’s kitchen. On Saturday there is a fish and chip lunch and other regular events include quizzes, bingo and music, featuring a Motown Magic evening on Saturday October 13th. Earlier this year the club hosted a Burns Night Supper and varied other musical entertainment, Secretary John Firkins telling the District Post: “We can seat 40 people comfortably here and it’s great to see the members enjoying themselves together. We’ve got a very well stocked bar, open Sunday lunchtimes and several evenings a week – selling Spitfire beer, of course! And, our prices are very reasonable indeed.” Chairman Tony Latham says: “You do not have to have served in the RAF to join RAFA – we’re pleased to welcome everyone, male or female,

young or older who’d like to join us, especially anyone who might be able to volunteer at one of our events, so if you’d like to try your hand at helping with our Wings appeal or have a go at pulling a pint then come along and bring someone from your family, a friend or neighbour to accompany you! If you decide to join you’ll find our full and associate membership fees very modest.” The RAFA is a countrywide organisation – Horsham & Storrington is Branch Number 665 – contributing towards the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, the RAF’s leading welfare charity, supporting current and former members of the RAF, their partners and dependents whenever needed. In 2017 almost £19million was spent to assist more than 55,000 members of the RAF family. More information about the Fund is available at www.rafbf.org, where there is access to the online shop with a comprehensive range of stunning gifts and cards. This year is a big one for the RAF, celebrating its centenary and September is the time to remember the Battle of Britain, when Germany repeatedly sought to banish the RAF from our skies and wipe the airfields off the map. The RAFA pays tribute to those who fought for us, succeeding to keep us free from the very real threat of Nazi invasion, especially those

who sadly made the ultimate sacrifice. Tony Latham continues: “Much of the action took place over Sussex and the Battle of Britain holds a very special place in our hearts, so we are very pleased to fund raise for the Wings Appeal to help with welfare support for both veterans and serving people. We had our annual parade at the War Memorial in the Carfax last Sunday, followed by the church service in St Mary’s in the Causeway and refreshments back at our HQ.” The club has many iconic pictures of aircraft activity, together with a collection of related books. Upstairs there is a museum containing RAF memorabilia, including Christ’s Hospital educated Barnes Wallis’s signature – the bar is named after him - and members are free to make full use of the rooms at the club. Residents are invited to drop in to Horsham’s RAFA Club to catch up with the interesting members, who will be delighted to see you – the sign above the entrance is spot on – “Enter as strangers – leave as friends” and you will be off to a flying start! stallholders’ takings and, of course, the obligatory raffle. This event is so much more than just another charity fair, as it’s unique in it’s offering of stalls and experiences. Alongside a host of 60 retail therapy stalls (comprising of jewellery, home accessories, fashion and accessories, kids collections and toys, books and stationery, food and drink) this year, the wellbeing section of the fair will be hugely expanded. Supporting the wellbeing section this year is Total Therapy Studios, a Horsham based therapy and exercise studio located in the centre of Horsham. Total Therapy Studios

are a fully integrated clinic that bridges the gap between medicine, therapy and exercise. They will offer you a chance to try yoka, pilates, talk to professionals about hypnotherapy, massage, acupuncture, running and overall mobility. Sarah Dover-McCarthy, owner and practice director, said: “We are delighted to be part of this event, held in such a worthy cause. Cancer affects so many people that we see on a daily basis, both directly and indirectly. We feel privileged to bring our unique and experienced team together for this event to offer talks, taster classes and therapies, and to be on hand to offer education and honest advice for your complete wellbeing, especially if this terrible disease has affected you. So if you would like to be involved in a session, try something that you haven’t tried before or just want to come and have a chat and a biscuit, we would love to see you”. MP backs new ‘opt-out’ rules for organ donation

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert has backed a call to save lives by changing the rules to require opt-out from organ donation. Mr Herbert gave his support to the campaign to encourage organ donation at an event in Parliament on Wednesday 5 September. In the Arundel & South Downs constituency, almost half of residents have registered to be an organ donor – 49.1 per cent, compared to a national figure of just 39.1 per cent. However, in other parts of the country, the figure is much lower, below 10 per cent in some areas of Birmingham for example. In February, MPs gave their backing to a Bill which is seeking to change current legislation. The Organ Donation (Deemed Consent) Bill would make ‘automatically enrolling adults onto an organ donation register’ law, unless they expressly choose to opt-out. The Bill, known as Max’s Law after 10 year-old Max Johnson who received a life-saving heart transplant,

completed its Committee stage in the House of Commons last week (12 September) and is due to have its Report stage, and Third Reading, on Friday 26 October 2018. If the Bill is passed, the new ‘opt-out’ register could be in place for all adults in England by Spring 2020. Wales already has a similar system in place (since 2015), and Scotland is looking to do the same. Fiona Loud, Policy Director at Kidney Care UK, said: “Last year, more than 400 people died whilst waiting for a transplant, so it is vital that we find ways to help save lives. With around 6,000 people waiting for that life-changing call, and 80 per cent of these hoping for a kidney transplant, we are urging people to have a chat with their families and make sure they know how you feel about organ donation.” Mr Herbert said: “While it’s encouraging that almost half of the adults in my constituency have registered to be an organ donor, more than the national average, this still means that a huge number have not, even though their donation could help to save a life. “This is why I support legislation for an automatic enrolment system from which people would have to ‘opt-out’. No-one will be forced to donate their organs if they don’t want to. I think it’s a sensible proposal which will save lives.”

Dragon Boat Festival returns with a splash!

St Catherine’s Hospice annual Dragon Boat Festival returned to Tilgate Park with a splash earlier this month, in a fantastic day of free family fun! This year’s festival, held on Sunday 9 September, was the hospice’s biggest ever to date, with more teams than ever before taking to the lake. Teams were made up of local businesses, including Horsham teams, Fisher Clinical Services, Assurity Consulting, Forza Doors and Thakeham who battled it out to be crowned Dragon Boat Champions 2018. Speaking on the day, Georgie Dawson, Marketing Manager at Thakeham, said: “Thakeham is thrilled to be taking part in St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Race Festival for the third year running. It’s always a great event for such a brilliant cause. And is an event that’s highly anticipated in all our calendars now! Today is about family, team work and community which is why Thakeham feels such an affinity with the event. Thank you to all at St Catherine’s and to all our generous sponsors that have helped us reach our total.” Tracey Staplehurst, Business Planning Manager, from Fisher Clinical Services, added, “St Catherine’s has always been close to the hearts of Fisher Clinical Services (part of ThermoFisher Scientific) in Horsham. Over the years, a number of our colleagues, friends and family have been supported by St Catherine’s during their most difficult of days, and it gives us such pride to be able to give something back. The gift of our time and energy, either as volunteers or as fundraisers, ensures that this wonderful organisation continues to offer support to our local community, when and where it’s

needed most. Today’s Dragon Boat race has become a firm favourite. It’s a day of happiness and togetherness, for competitors and spectators alike.” Those on the shorelines tried their luck at traditional fête games, such as hook a duck and a penalty shootout, whilst younger visitors sprung into action on giant inflatables. Visitors also tucked into tasty food from onsite vendors, and enjoyed refreshing drinks from the onsite

Thakeham is thrilled to be taking part in St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Race Festival for the third year running bar, provided by Sussex Event Bars, who donated a percentage of profits to St Catherine’s. On the lake, teams showed true team spirit as they raced across the water in Chinese Dragon Boats. After a full day of races, DHL Express powered through to be crowned champions, with a winning time of 57 seconds, which was two seconds faster than last year’s winners. Amanda Phelan, Operations Manager at DHL Express, said: “This is our third year competing and it’s always such a lovely, fantastic day. The second year we took part we came in at second place so we were here to win today. And we’re thrilled we managed it!” Close behind, in second place, were Vines Ltd with Vines Beemer taking the third place trophy. Winning teams were presented with medals and trophies by Giles

Tomsett, Chief Executive at St Catherine’s, and The Worshipful Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Carlos Portal Castro. Vines of Gatwick proudly sponsored the festival, alongside entering two teams. Darren Buche, MINI Sales Executive at Vines of Gatwick, said: “Every year, we have a fantastic day at St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival. It’s been great seeing even more teams competing this year to show their support for the amazing work St Catherine’s does caring for people in the community around us. It’s a fun day out for us as colleagues and it’s brilliant to raise money for such a worthwhile cause. We’re pleased that our efforts will help more people in our community in the future. We’re already looking forward to signing up for next year’s race!” St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival is one of the local hospice’s biggest annual fundraisers. The event will help them provide expert end of life care to local terminally ill people and their friends and family, when life comes full circle. Currently, the hospice can only care for one in three people. But with the support of the community at events like Dragon Boats, the hospice wants to make sure that nobody faces death and loss alone. Suzanne Davis, Corporate Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who supported or took part in this year’s Dragon Boat Festival. Your efforts take us a step nearer to reaching everyone who needs us. We hope you all enjoyed the day as much as we did!” To find out about future St Catherine’s events, or how you can support the hospice, please visit: www.stch.org.uk. Steyning & District Food and Drink Festival - Opening Day

Saturday September 1 was the Opening Day for the Steyning & District Food and Drink Festival, and it started not just with a bang, but one gigantic bang! The sun shone and the Farmers Market was in full swing with a live band, cooking demonstrations, and a-buzz with wonderful food and drink stalls, plus the official Prize Giving for the Best Allotment Competition 2018. The town was full of happy residents and visitors, and the High Street was a feast of Competition shop window displays, which, this year, was being judged by Leigh Chambers from the Horsham District Economic Development Department, who started the whole idea of a District-wide food & drink festival many years ago. Six years ago, Steyning & District took the event to their hearts, and now represents a huge percentage of the businesses involved in this annual event.

The morning started with Derek Crush from Daylands Farm, who judged the Allotment Competition, presenting a 1st place cup and £40 Voucher to Adrian Brown; 2nd place and a £20 voucher went to Sarah McCrimmon, and 3rd place plus £10 voucher to Charley Lowe. All vouchers were very kindly donated by The Old Barn Garden Centre, Dial Post. The second competition of the day was for shop windows and displays. All entries ran with a theme of food & drink, and were superb. The effort & creativity was evident to see. As usual, the Judge did not have an easy task in selecting the winners, and was left feeling guilty that he ‘could not select all as champions’. There were two categories - one for Non-Foodie shops, and one for Foodie - so all started from a very level playing field. The results were: Non Foodie section: 1st Mary

C

Matthews Handmade; 2nd Baby Boutique; 3rd Smiffy Bears, and Highly Commended Steyning Antiques. Foodie Section: 1st The Little Sweetshop; 2nd The Cobblestone Tea House; 3rd Green & Healthy and Highly Commended Truffles. The prize money was, once again, generously sponsored by Steyning & District Business Chamber. Organisers are urging the public to: “Try and make a visit to Steyning to see all the shop windows within the High Street and Cobblestone Walk, as most will have them on display for the duration of the Food & Drink Festival. At the same time, you can take advantage of the many offers and events that are available within Steyning & District – lots to enjoy.” Some of the events still to take place: Breakfasts for St Barnabas at several locations during the Festival duration; Special St Barnabas dish at Gorilla Kitchen, Mamma Mia, Pizza Oven, The Artisan Bakehouse & The Cobblestone Tea House. Cobblestone Walk Family Foodie Open Day; Several “special” Walks and Brewery Open Days; The Gin Revolution Dinner with Dave Broom; An Evening with Emmanuel Hadjiandreou – International Baker; Mulled Wine & Star Gazing; THE GREAT STEYNING BAKE OFF (BETTER THAN THE ONE ON THE TELLY !); Food for Wellbeing at The Towers School; Festival Open Days at The Artisan Bakehouse; Flower Arranging Lunch or Tea; Pick it Cook It at Daylands Farm and The Beer Festival. Table tennis breaking the mold in Horsham District Horsham Table Tennis Club (HTTC), supported by Horsham District Council’s Sports Development team, is heeding the call from the sport’s governing body to encourage and support more people to start (and stay) playing table tennis by modernising local competition structures. Starting in mid-October 2018, the club is running a weekly programme of Table Tennis Matchplay Evenings, on Friday nights at Collyer’s Sixth Form College in Horsham, a venue that can accommodate up to 15 tables if required. These evenings will provide fun, friendly, and more informal competition opportunities to accommodate players of all ages and experience levels in a sport which prides itself on its inclusive nature. An ability-banded approach will ensure that, whether you are new to the game, an established competitor or somewhere in between, you will be appropriately challenged. And whether you want to play occasionally, part of the time or all the time, you can just sign-up and we’ll be able to flex around your availability. Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Jonathan Chowen, said: “Promoting good

health and wellbeing is at the heart of what we do at the Council and the Matchplay Evenings for table tennis do muchto support this. “It’s great to see a new project like this being launched in our District and our Sports Development team working so hard to diversify their programmes to encourage as many people as possible to get active, socialise and enjoy their sport. “Whether you are male or female, young or old, fit or unfit, able-bodied or disabled, and from whatever background, you’ll be welcome to these evenings. “I would encourage as many of you as possible to sign up, come along and give table tennis a try.” One of the key features of the evenings will be the adoption of a two hour, rather than three hour, timeframe to ensure adults and juniors alike get home at a safe hour. The format of the evenings will be drawn from a range of options, including team nights, individual tournaments, doublesplay and handicap based events. There’ll even be “welcome music” in the hall to warm-up to! HTTC is in the vanguard of a Horsham District-wide partnership of table tennis clubs, groups and agencies, notably includ-

ing Horsham District Council’s Sports Development team, that is responding to Table Tennis England’s (TTE) ‘Better Experience Table Tennis’ (BETT) scheme that aims to freshen up and popularise the sport’s local competitive offer. The partnership’s vision, galvanised with TTE support, has been rewarded with a £9,200 Sport England grant to invest in programme development. Progress so far by HTTC under the BETT initiative has been impressive. The club’s new junior committee has achieved significant growth via new coaching and competition opportunities, drawing on the extensive network of schools that it supports in tandem with the Council’s coaches. On the adult side, the club’s social and advanced ranks are also expanding, and the club’s re-entry into Senior British League next year is another sign of progress. For more information about the Matchplay Evenings or anything else about table tennis opportunities in the Horsham District, please visit: www.horshamtabletennisclub.co.uk (and click ’Weekly Programme’) or contact Ian Ford at Horsham District Council by emailing: Ian.ford@ horsham.gov.uk or calling: 07764 146338.

TV presenter Julia Bradbury joins Inspired Villages’ residents on a countryside walk

Residents and staff from Inspired Villages Group’s (IVG) later living communities were joined by TV presenter and walking enthusiast Julia Bradbury on a countryside walk on Thursday 6th September. The walk set off from the retirement living provider’s most centrally located village Great Alne Park in Warwickshire. Two residents from each of IVG’s six villages across the UK joined Julia on the walk aimed at promoting

an active retirement, including Roger and Margaret Chaplin who live at Durrants Village in Faygate. The event launched a new initiative from Inspired Villages to encourage countryside walking, through the production of ‘Walking Guide’ pamphlets set to launch at each of their villages in the coming months. Starting at Great Alne Park, residents were led by Julia Bradbury on a three mile walk through the stunning Warwickshire

countryside, where she took the time to chat to residents, as well as CEO of Inspired Villages, Jamie Bunce. Discussions included what the company is doing to change the face of ‘later living’ and how Inspired Villages is helping residents to enjoy an independent, active and fulfilled retirement. The halfway point was celebrated with a beer tasting at a local brewery, and the walk ended with a pub lunch where residents shared stories about being part of an Inspired community and their favourite walks. Passionate walker Julia, who is best known for her time as a presenter on the BBC’s Countryfile, as well as presenting Watchdog and ITV’s Britain’s Best Walks, also has her own website charting good walking routes across the country, The Outdoor Guide. Julia said: “This was a fabulous day to be involved in and I am proud to be part of such an important initiative. Walking is a great way for people to ease into exercise, explore their local area and get to know new people.” Two residents from Durrants Village joined the walk, Roger and Margaret Chaplin, who are keen walkers and moved to the

village three years ago from Cambridgeshire to be closer to family. Roger said: “The walk with Julia seemed a good opportunity to meet some other Inspired villagers, as well as Julia herself. We really enjoyed meeting her and found her just as friendly as she appears on screen. “We have been doing quite a bit of walking around Horsham, both with other villagers and the local U3A, and we were impressed with the lovely countryside in Warwickshire - almost as good as the Horsham area!” The walk marked the launch of Inspired Villages’ latest initiative, individual ‘Walking Guides’ for each village, to encourage an active and social later life. The Walking Guides will chart local walking routes and will be launched at each village in the coming months. Jamie Bunce, CEO of IVG, said: “The Inspired walk was a fantastic day and we were delighted that Julia could be part of it. Our local residents and those who travelled from our other villages throughout the UK enjoyed it immensely. “The event was part of our drive to help combat loneliness. It’s predicted that between 2008

and 2033 there will be a 44% increase in the number of 65-74 year olds living alone across the country*, and research shows that being lonely can have a negative impact on physical and mental health**. The Walking Guides endeavour to facilitate living younger longer and to encourage our residents to explore the attractive surroundings of their new homes.” Jamie Bunce explains: “Our vision is to make a big impact on major issues such as health, care and loneliness. Our unique later living accommodation and communities are centred on the philosophy that adventures, good health and happiness don’t stop in retirement.” In addition to Durrants Village in Faygate and Great Alne Park in Warwickshire, Inspired Villages also owns and operates Bramshott Place in Liphook, Hampshire, Millbrook Village in Exeter, Devon, Austin Heath in Heathcote, Warwickshire and Gifford Lea in Tattenhall, Cheshire. Inspired Villages has also recently purchased a site in Leeds, Kent, to create a new retirement village with completion due in 2020.

Comedy Beats at Horsham Cricket and Sports Club Comedy Beats present our first show at Horsham Cricket and Sports Club on Friday 28 September, with what promises to be one of our best lineups of the year. We set the company up about three years ago with the aim of bringing the very best stand up comedians to venues in the south-east, and that is exactly what we have been doing. We always try to get at least one act on each line up with a major TV credit, but this one is a bit special as we have two! The opening act is the wonderful Simon Evans. Most comedy clubs in the country would be over the moon to have him as their closing act, but to have him on first at

this one is testament to what we are trying to achieve. His television credits include Mock The Week, Live at the Apollo, as well as Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. He has been touring his one man show Genius at various venues up and down the country this year, so to have him come and do a club set for us is just great. After the first interval it will be the turn of Troy Hawke. He is a character act who comes across as a home schooled 1930’s throwback. He is educated, sophisticated... and utterly clueless. When you book a lot of comedy shows, you begin to realise there are only about half a dozen different genres, including observational, one liners, storytelling etc. Probably the most under represented group is character acts. I am sure this is why Al Murray’s Pub Landlord is so well known. When you see a great character act like Troy Hawke, you know he is destined for great success. Closing the show is the highly ac-

claimed Patrick Monahan. He is widely regarded as one of the best improvisers on the circuit. In 2011 he won ITV1’s Show Me The Funny which, in turn, led to the release of his debut DVD ‘Patrick Monahan Live.’ In 2015 he was named ‘Britain’s Hardest Working Comedian’ by Ents24 for playing the highest number of venues in the UK that year. With Simon Evans opening the show, we needed somebody pretty special to close it and, in Patrick, I believe we have found exactly the right act. The Compere for the evening is the Comedy Beats favourite Roger Monkhouse. Widely regarded as one of the very best MC’s on the circuit, he is always a joy to watch. He is happy to improvise freely with any audience, but equally has no shortage of brilliantly crafted observational material. With Roger at the helm, I know it’s going to be a great show. It all takes place at Horsham Cricket and Sports Club on Friday 28 September. Doors open at 7.00 and the show starts at 8.00. Tickets, priced £8 for members and £10 for non-members, are available either directly from the venue or online by visiting: www. comedybeats.com

of the artist’s Shropshire-home, and the animals & birds which share her environment. Jemima was born on a farm in Devon, but lived for most of her life in Sussex. She studied Illustration and Design at Northbrook College in Horsham. Jemima now lives with

her husband in a beautiful valley set in the Shropshire hills, between the site of an ancient hill-fort and a steep, densely wooded oak forest. She derives much of her inspiration from the surrounding countryside and it’s wealth of fauna & flora. Working mainly in acrylics which, she feels, suit her illustrative style. Her paintings have a peaceful feeling and the animals that she paints seem quietly at ease with themselves and confident of their place in the world. Jemima’s highly detailed, luminous designs on furniture and gesso-panels are a joyous celebration of the natural world. Jemima has always retained a deep nostalgia for the illustrations and stories from her childhood; the Arts & Crafts movement and the rich detail of illuminated-manuscripts. She feels so compelled to draw and paint, it is quite simply a vital part of the daily rhythm of her life. A founder member of the Redlake Valley Artists group, Jemima exhibited in their inaugural exhibition in September 2011. She also regularly exhibits at the Old Chapel, Pembridge and the Blue Ginger Gallery, Malvern. A Song in the Hills opens on 27 September and runs until 24 November 2018, admission is free of charge. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am -5pm. For more information see www.horshammuseum.org.

From the discovery of Methane to the invention of the Battery. WatercolouRA250 at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery For 250 years watercolourists have felt slighted by the leading art institution in the country, the Royal Academy (RA). Yet, as the new exhibition WatercolouRA250 at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery shows, many leading Royal Academicians were, and are, talented watercolour artists. This includes famous names such as Paul Sandby, J. M. W. Turner, Thomas Gainsborough, right through to today’s Academicians Humphrey Ocean, and the RA’s own President Christopher Le Brun. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery’s new exhibition, WatercolouRA250, displays a range of amazing watercolours painted by RA members, yet this art form is not mentioned in the RA’s new book, published to tell the 250 year history of the organisation. Given Horsham Museum and Art Gallery’s own 125th anniversary this year, as well as its efforts in building a new watercolour collection, it seemed only appropriate to highlight the relationship between the RA and the art of the watercolour. The Royal Academy has refused, throughout its history, to exhibit watercolours and to accept skill in that art form as the basis for admission to its ranks. Only those who practiced painting in oil, architecture, sculpture and printmaking could be elected to the RA. In the 18th century it was felt that watercolours, also known as tinted drawings, were a lesser form of art. Famed artists such as J.M.W. Turner, whose painting of Dover

features in the display, demonstrated great skill in watercolours. Humphrey Ocean RA, Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy and contributor to the exhibition, argues that it is Turner’s watercolours that distinguish him as an artist, but that it was his oil paintings that got him elected to the RA. Two new watercolour societies, The Royal Watercolour Society, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, were formed at the turn of the 19th century in response to the Royal Academy’s disapproval of watercolours. An ongoing rift developed between these watercolour societies and the RA that continues that this day. The glorious work on display in WatercoloRA250 will encourage visitors to question the need for this rift given the high number of Academicians who are also watercolourists. Thanks to funding from the Royal Academy’s RA250 event, support from The Art Fund, as well as assistance from the auctioneers, Toovey’s of Washington, the Museum has been able to supplement its own collections with over 30 watercolours on loan from Sussex based galleries and private lenders including; Towner Art Gallery, Worthing Museum & Art Gallery, Christ’s Hospital Museum, and The Bishop Otter Art Collection. Alongside the exhibition, the Museum will host children’s art workshops, as well as two fascinating talks by leading historians of the watercolour; Greg Smith and Timothy Wilcox, held at The Capi-

in mind. The layouts, whether of the 2, 3, 4 or 5 bedroom houses, all maximise space and light and are equally well suited to families, professional couples or empty nesters planning to downsize in size but not in quality. “The surrounding countryside and open fields were the main sources of inspiration behind the interior design for this brand new show home,” says Daisy Clark, senior interior designer at Phoenix Interior Design of Ockley, near Dorking. “With such a fantastic setting combining both natural setting and new sports and outdoor

facilities, we wanted to bring the outdoors inside.” Daisy chose a palette of soft greys offset with an accent colour of a strong forest green. Natural fabrics have been chosen for texture and the overall impression is designed to appeal to the senses. “I’m really proud of the way the whole interior design flows so well and we’ve included lots of interesting aspects to catch the eye of viewers but if I had to pick my favourite piece, it would be a chest of drawers in the children’s bedroom. “Abingworth Meadows is set on the site of a what was once a mushroom farm so the chest which has been made specially for this show house. I’ve designed it to be finished with colourful woodland creatures as well as a toadstool to reflect its past,” said Daisy. The new show home opens next Saturday, 29 September at 10am at Abingworth Meadows, Storrington Road, Thakeham. For further information contact the sales and marketing suite, open daily from 10am to 5pm, on 01798 813071 or email thakeham@oakfordhomes.co.uk. Abingworth Meadows is a unique development in the heart of Sussex countryside and will include a new village hall, cricket pitch & pavilion and further sports pitches as well as a pre-school. Homes here are currently available from £419,950 to £995,000. Homebuyers are invited to discover more about Oakmove, which assists with the sale of buyers’ existing properties, and the government’s Help to Buy scheme which is now available on selected homes at Abingworth Meadows.

the weekend got under way with Holly Earl challenging at Level 6, out of age in only her second four piece competition. But Holly was third on the vault and also did well on the bars and floor, finishing 13th overall and

gaining much useful experience. Then, at level 5 age, Isla Stocker was placed 7th overall, with Lucy Marshall 9th, Naomi Crupper 11th, Nureeza Miller 13th, Zara Paphitis15th and Autumn South 16th. Isla excelled with the first on bars and second on floor from the 67 gymnasts in her grouping. Lucy was also outstanding on the beam, as was Naomi, the team placed fourth narrowly missing out on a medal. The Sunday started very well with Cissy Marlow placed 2nd overall, Izzy Carr 3rd and Phoebe Light crowned South East Regional Champion. Then, at Level 3, Lola McNaughton was 2nd overall, Brooke Stocker also 2nd in her age group, and Tabitha Lees 4th, while Elisha Venturini ended in 10th position. Brooke received a gold medal for the top beam score and Tabitha a bronze for both vault and bars, and as a result the pair will represent the South East Region at November’s National finals. In addition, the Level 3A team carried off their title. In Sunday’s second round Honesty South successfully qualified for the British Challenge Cup, also in November. And, after winning gold for both bars and beam and a bronze for vault she was crowned Junior FIG Challenge Champion. The weekend’s final round finished equally successfully, with Morgan Miller placed 1st in the out of age Level 4 (7+) category, collecting the trophy for the highest score, in addition to a bronze award for floor. At Level 4 Georgia Stables was placed 2nd overall, Arabella Aston 3rd and Poppy Finn, with a bronze for beam, 7 th. The Level 4 team also collected their Team Title and Arabella and Georgia will represent the South East at November’s Nationals. Congratulations to Horsham’s gymnasts – and their coaches – for returning with a magnificent 24 medals, three Regional Champions and two Team Titles – a highly successful weekend!

Last Sunday Roffey made their National Finals Day debut for the biggest game in their 117 year history - a big occasion involving top clubs. Roffey were pitched against Hanging Heaton from West Yorkshire and unfortunately didn’t play as well as they have proved they can. Their opponents had already won three trophies this season and included three ex county pros in their squad – a stiff challenge against the side that went on to beat favourires Swardeston under lights in the final, staged at the historic HQ of Derbyshire County Cricket Club. The Racecourse Ground hosted horse racing for almost 100 years, was the original home of Derby County FC and staged a Cup Final, too, but is now clearly suffering from underinvestment, spectators having to huddle under what shelter there was for sanctuary against occasional showers and cold wind. Roffey elected to bat and were soon in serious trouble at 15-3 in the third over, including Rohit Jagota being adjudged caught behind first ball. Jagota walks when he is out but was stationary when the finger went up. The score had risen to 41 by the time the next wicket fell, but almost half of the overs had gone. Many more runs were required, but Roffey were in no position to throw caution to the wind and sought to push on safely in the hope of posting perhaps 125 – a modest ask relying on them being able to take a cluster of early scalps to set Hanging Heaton back. Roffey, wickets though

continued to fall all too regularly. After Matt Davies was run out for 20, Usman Khan and George Fleming got to double figures, but the innings could only post a 100 run target, the two opening bowlers – Chippendale and Man of the Match David Stiff having taken six wickets between them for just 34 runs off eight overs, Stiff boosted by two superb catches by Nick Connolly. Jagota struck with the first ball of Hanging Heaton’s response and when they were reduced to 21-2 there was a glimmer of hope, but the next wicket did not fall until the half way stage, when 51 runs were on the board. That was the end of Roffey’s success, Hanging Heaton doubling the score to win with 15 balls to spare, assisted by two fielding lapses. Roffey Captain Matt Davies told the District Post: “It has been a very long, tough season with plenty of Sunday matches in addition to the league programme. Our batting has carried us through, but we didn’t bat well today.” Coach Simon Fearnely added: “It was great to be here at Finals Day – a wonderful experience for team, but we were out-played today, there is no hiding that.” Yet, Roffey have had a fantastic season – winning the Sussex Premiership for the fourth time in five years, getting through to the ECB National Club Championship Semi Final and coming within a whisker of retaining the Sussex Cup at Hove. Along the way they have knocked out counterparts including Alton, Guildford, Penzance, Blackheath, Brentwood, Bromley Common, Chingford and Tunbridge Wells, mostly at the opposition’s ground, and all relished by their excellent army of travelling supporters, really putting Roffey on the map. On their day Roffey can beat good club sides, home or away, but coming up against a very strong team with seemingly unplumbed resources was a game too far this time.

Horsham overcome by dynamic Beckenham

Broadbridge Heath knock YMCA out of RUR Cup Tuesday September 18 Sussex Royal Ulster Rifles Charity Cup (R1) Broadbridge Heath 4 1 Horsham YMCA

Saturday September 15 – London 2 South East Horsham 22 50 Beckenham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter After the euphoria of Horsham’s thrilling, emphatic win on last Saturday’s opening encounter of the season, the Green & Whites’ first league game on their new artificial grass pitch showed how tough life can be even for a competitive side in the strong London SE2 League. Horsham completed the double over visiting Beckenham last season, but, fresh from a convincing win against Gravesend, Beckenham’s power and athleticsm proved too hot to handle as they ran eight tries past Horsham, who responded with three tries, but were overcome by a dynamic side intent of regaining League One

Jordan Bell status. Second row Ed Ikediashi opened the scoring with a converted try, but Horsham restored parity when Declan Nwachukwu ran from the half way line to skirt the defence, Tom Johnson converting, as he did with a subsequent penalty. However, two more Beckenham tries left Horsham trailing 10-17 at the interval. Coming back out equally bullishly, Beckenham scored two further tries – one from KK Orelaja before Ikediashi notched up his hat trick. Horsham retaliated with a try from Tom Blewitt ahead of Orelaja getting over again, followed by Beckenham Centre George Hickson doing the same. Josh Steggles then notched up Horsham’s third try, Johnson’s kick being denied by the posts before Josh Smith scored Beckenham’s final try, which with four successful conversions enabled them to win by the handsome 22-50 margin.

Disappointed Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “We didn’t have the appetite for the physical contest and gave their ball carriers too much respect, missing too many tackles. We were well beaten by a good side but were significant architects of our own downfall. On the positive side, the scrum went well and on occasions we showed a threat with the ball, Mike Tredgett was our Man of the Match for his usual physical standards. The team will learn from today – things have gone well until now, perhaps we’d developed a bit of hubris. Unfortunately, Johnny Goward took a heavy knock and has fractured his cheekbone and will undergo an operation on Tuesday – we wish him a speedy recovery.” On Saturday Horsham travel to Gravesend, who beat Aylesford Bulls last week.

Lively Broadbridge Heath put paid to Horsham YMCA’s Royal Ulster Rifles Cup aspirations with a commanding second half display in the opening round at the Leisure Centre on Tuesday. Much changed YMCA made initial forays with Tony Nwachukwu firing over before Heath’s Devon Fender header was also too high – until, in the 15th minute, Max Howell’s pile driver was pushed away by YM keeper Aaron Jeal at full stretch. The resulting corner was not cleared, enabling Fender to give Heath the lead. YM responded, earning a corner and Nwachukwu got through with a one on one, but slotted just wide before their free kick was headed over. Then, five minutes before the break Mark Cave’s excellent strike from another corner drew YM level, but parity was short lived, Heath going 2-1 up through Marlon Maxwell right on half time. The second session began with YM shooting just off target, but Heath soon asserted their authority, increasing their lead when

George Cousins’ scuffed kick found the goal. From then on Heath called the shots – their back line negating YM opportunities, and their forwards constantly probing, Max Howell and Richard Wetton being particularly threatening, putting YM under sustained pressure. Marlon Maxwell also broke through ahead of another Heath attack, which was pushed out for Wetton to crash in, giving Heath a three goal cushion with only six minutes remaining. YM had unfulfilled late corners, on the left and right, before Nwachukwu was sent off for verbal abuse. Wetton still had time for two more pacey runs, one culminating in an excellent reaction save by Jeal, Heath finishing comfortable winners. YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “Although it’s early season several of our players have already had a lot of football and we’ve got a long way to go. I didn’t want to disrespect this competition but I needed to rest people, especially as we are nursing a few injuries.” On Saturday eighth placed Broadbridge Heath travel to Little Common (14th), while, also in the league, current runners up YMCA are at home to Peacehaven & Telscombe (4th).

Horsham’s mercurial start boosted by cup & league success Saturday September 1 - Bostik League – South East Division Whyteleafe 3 1 Horsham Tuesday September 4 – Velocity Trophy R1 – Bracknell Town 3 1 Horsham Saturday September 8 – FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round – Corinthians 1 1 Horsham Tuesday September 12 - FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round – Replay Horsham 5 0 Corinthians Saturday September 15 – Bostik League – South East Division Horsham 1 0 Herne Bay Football round up Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Whyteleafe the hosts capitalised on Horsham’s first half errors. The Hornets’ goal was ruled offside before Leafe’s Bradley Wilson scored from a corner

deflection. Then Eddie Dsane was brought down in the area, rising to convert the penalty. Lewis Hyde’s header reduced the deficit – until just before half time a failed clearance allowed Harrison Carnegie to score, Horsham trailing 3-1 at the break. In the second half Dsane blazed Leafe’s second penalty well over, and Leafe were contained, but the damage had already been done. In the Velocity Trophy at Bracknell, against another unbeaten side, the Hornets negated two chances in the opening minutes before the hosts took the lead. Horsham were creating opportunities yet remained one down at the break, but they equalised through Rob O’Toole in the second session. Bracknell, though, regained the advantage with 20 minutes remaining, and it got

worse for the Hornets when Kane Fitzgerald smashed the ball in following a failed clearance for Bracknell to win 3-1. In the FA Cup in Kent, Horsham came away with a draw after a hat trick of defeats, although they should have beaten the lower league opposition. An own goal gave the Hornets the lead in the first half, but having kept Corinthians at bay, with just a few seconds of the game left the defence was penetrated, signalling a replay. In the re-match at Lancing, Horsham posted their first win in five games – an emphatic one - earning themselves £6,000 prize money. Chris Smith pressed hard with chances from the off, but was denied by the cross bar and keeper. Further opportunities evaporated, until two minutes before the break Lee Harding put

Horsham in front. Ten minutes into the second half the Hornets doubled their lead from a Joe Shelley header following a string of corners. Rob O’Toole added a third, then Smith made it 4 nil, ahead of sub Jack Brivio – just signed from Burgess Hill – putting the icing on the cake to seal Horsham’s convincing win, Manager Dom Di Paola saying: “That’s what we should have done on Saturday!” Horsham are rewarded with a home tie against Isthmian League North’s Heybridge Swifts from Essex this Saturday. In last weekend’s game against unthreatening visitors Herne Bay (seeking their first league success), Horsham secured their second win of the campaign. The first half finished goal-less despite opportunities created by the Hornets, but Lee Harding and

Chris Smith constantly challenged the Kent side’s defence, until, having previously been thwarted by the woodwork, Smith finally scored the winning goal, the Hornets successfully closing the game down for three valuable points. After three years with Horsham, Darren Boswell has left to consider his options, Dom Di Paola saying: “It’s sad because Bozzy has provided the supporters with some special memories. He goes with my best wishes for the future.” But, Horsham are very pleased to announce the arrival of talented midfielder Harvey Sparks, from Bognor Regis Town, Di Paola adding: “We’ve been tracking Harvey for a while, so we’re delighted he’s agreed to come to us. He’s a midfielder with the right attitude to fit in with what we’re trying to achieve.”
