Contentious plans for incinerator in pipeline martin read

Reporter

As announced in last week’s District Post, plans to create a substantial 24 hour incinerator plant on the site of the former Wealden Brickworks in Langhurstwood Road on the outskirts of Horsham have been re-presented. Britaniacrest Recycycling previously submitted an application to West Sussex County Council but this was withdrawn following residents’ concerns over pollution and environmental damage. Britaniacrest are described as one of the south’s leading private waste management companies and they state that they are: “Passionate about recycling and protecting the environment” and that they have: “achieved 0% to landfill for customers - recycling 90% of the current 250,000 tonnes of waste received yearly.” The planning application comes at a time of mounting concern over the levels of packaging generated by supermarkets and other retail outlets, substantial quanti-

ties of which cannot currently be recycled, and finds its way back into the food chain via the oceans. Also, cut backs have resulted in a reduction in the frequency of household waste collections and a restriction of the opening times of waste facilities, such as Horsham’s Hop Oast. While there is pressure on supermarkets and other businesses to cut down on the amount of packaging waste that they distribute, progress is slow and alternative action is urgently required if the level of landfill – which can be odorous and attract scavengers – is to be curtailed. Britaniacrest contend that they have the experience, knowledge and technology to create innovative solutions for safe, environmentally friendly recycling processes for plastics, wood, metal and builders’ rubble and that they have listened to and resolved concerns voiced about their original proposals and have lowered the height of the buildings that would be constructed. They also point out that in addition to 300 construction jobs during creation of their plant, there would then be 35 permanent positions at the facility. And, in an effort to allay residents’ fears they

Biffa Waste Services close to proposed site are staging a public exhibition of their revised plans – at Roffey’s Millenium Hall this Friday (from 4pm to 7pm) and again on Saturday morning – 10am to 1pm. In Europe, Denmark and Sweden are considered to be leaders in the field of recycling plants and there are European directives

regulating such processes. But, it is certain that, whatever steps are taken to lessen the impact, the prospect of introducing a controversial recycling plant into the district’s countryside will be met with protests, ranging from worries about gas and other toxic emissions, increased road traffic,

and the potentially ugly appearance of the plant. While, promoters of the scheme will highlight employment opportunities, possible generation of heat and electricity from the processes and the much-needed eradication of waste. The debate is unlikely to be resolved speedily.

Carmela - Horsham’s iconic Italian Restaurant – has just staged a sell-out dining experience at Horsham Sports Club in Cricketfield Road. The event was organised by club member Chris Dickinson and his wife Stephanie, Chris telling the District Post: “We wanted to raise money for charity by providing excellent food and entertainment – and to showcase the club, too, which is open to non members. Adding to the authentic flavour, Italian guitarist Alessandro Gugel’s music was greatly appreciated.” Chris and Stephanie live near the club and helped to decorate the room, Chris adding: “We’ve been friends of the family at Carmela for years and we worked with Shaka Shambrook and Kevin Handley at the Sports Club to put on the evening. We had great support from the 110 people who attended from the community across the district and we raised over £1700 for St Catherine’s so we’re absolutely delighted!” The Horsham Sports Club hall was transformed into an Italian Restaurant for the night with a four course meal produced by Carmela, special ingredients being supplied by Pan Artisan, Chris and Stephanie’s award winning business in Midhurst, whose products can be found in all the best restaurants, eateries and pubs where quality is key. Chris continued: “A big thank you to the local businesses who donated auction and raffle prizes for the evening – Rookwood Golf Course, Wakefields the Jewellers, Beauty Secrets, Martha’s Barn, The Cook Shop, The Company Hairdressing, Waterstones, Rush Hair, Look Fantastic, Headmasters, Moeys, PHD, Shelley Arms, Tonic Hairdressers, The Perfume Shop, Bill’s, La Piazzeta, Between the Lines and so many more. And, of course, we are indebted to Carmela Restaurant, Pan Artisan, Adams Wholesale Foods (Worthing) and, especially, to Horsham

Sports Club. As the evening was a great success we hope to arrange so more gourmet charity evenings at the club!” Speaking for Horsham Sports Club, Shaka Shambrook said: “The Carmela evening was tremendous – it was a team effort, our own staff were brilliant and Carmela were fantastic, everyone worked hard to put it on – but it wouldn’t have happened without the commitment of Chris and Stephanie Dickinson!” Kevin Handley added: “It was

have thoroughly enjoyed them all, but this was by far the best! I had a table of 10 and my guests loved this up-market evening and are looking forward to another gourmet night!” Horsham Sports Club is fast growing into the town’s leading entertainment venue for good food, music and wine. St Catherine’s have arranged their own fundraising event on Friday February 9th with live music from the Tube Snake Boogie Band, following which there is a comprehensive programme of events right through until next autumn – for details, please see http://www. horshamsportsclub.com/newsand-events/events

Know your rights Our fortnightly review of the law and you, with Mancini Legal – Horsham’s leading lawyer. Personal Injury – the Three-Year Rule. Most people these days are aware of the fact they can claim compensation if they have been in a RTA (road traffic accident), injured at work or otherwise had their health affected by something that wasn’t their fault. What they may not be aware of is the length of time they can go back to make a claim. In general, a claim can be made any time within three years from the date the ‘event’ happened. Practically that doesn’t mean 2 years and 364 days as cases take time to prepare, so if you want to make a claim it’s best to do it as soon as you can. Campylobacter and the chicken liver parfait For example, Mancini Legal is currently acting for three businessmen who got food poisoning at an industry dinner just before Christmas. The problem was a bug called Campylobacter that often crops up in chicken products – in this case the chicken liver parfait starter. They claimed within days and, because it’s still fresh in everybody’s mind, and the supplier at fault has admitted liability, we will settle it promptly. In this particular case they were not the only people affected, and Health England got involved – all of which helps with the weight of evidence. They were off work, quite seriously ill, and in considerable discomfort for a week. The likely level of compensation will be somewhere between £2-3,000. Because of the way their employment contract was structured their employer can claim for loss of work too. Should you fall victim to this sort of complaint see your doctor as soon as possible to record it, check if anybody else had the problem, and keep copies of any expenses you incur for medicines, taxis, etc. as they can be reclaimed too.

Things are not always obvious Some illnesses or conditions are not always apparent, symptoms can take longer to develop, and you may end up with a medical problem that has taken time to manifest. Examples here could be Asbestosis or vibration-induced injury from work. The three-year rule still applies here, but the difference is that you need to bring the case within three years of the date of knowledge within which you should have discovered symptoms that give you a right to claim. In effect when you have a confirmed diagnosis of the problem. The law does vary. If anything happens to your children a claim can be made up until three years after their 18th birthday. Rules vary with travel – injury or illness on a package holiday needs a claim made within three years, but if it happened on an aircraft, or at sea, it’s only two years. It’s worth noting that ‘aircraft’ also includes ‘balloons’! Different foreign countries also have differing limits.

It’s always good to have the law on your side Hopefully life will be straightforward, and you’ll never need to claim. If you do however it’s always best to have an expert lawyer on your side, who understands all the tactics insurance companies use to try and minimise the amount of compensation they have to pay, fighting your corner. And we would stress the fact you need a proper lawyer – the option is a ‘claims management company’, but if you read the news recently you will have seen that some travel illness cases have led to claimants being prosecuted for perverting the course of justice! If you have a claim and want somebody local, who you can call in and see and stay in close touch with, Mancini Legal has a Personal Injury specialist on the team. Best of all, in personal injury cases, Mancini acts on a no-win, no-fee basis. For more details visit mancinilegal.com/ personal-injury

Question Time for Horsham MP!

On Friday 19 January, Collyer’s welcomed Jeremy Quin MP to the college, for a session with students focussing on employability. Jeremy took part in a Q&A with over 140 students and gave a candid and fascinating insight into life in the House of Commons, together with advice about how students can be employable in the future. Lucy Hargreaves, Collyer’s Employability Programme Coordinator, said: “Our students really enjoyed today’s lively Q&A. It was incredibly generous of Jeremy to accept our invitation and give up so much of his valuable time to prepare for and take part in today’s session” The event was hosted by Deputy Principal Steve Martell, who asked Jeremy about a day in the life of a politician, why he’d chosen a career in politics and his role models. The students asked dozens of questions, ranging from the process required to become an MP to advice

for budding MP’s or civil servants. Jeremy told the students: “If you can’t think of exactly what it is you’d like to do, then do something! Do something positive that might lead you on your way, or prove useful as life experience in the future.” Charlie Brooker is studying Computing, Maths and Physics at the Ofsted Outstanding Sixth Form College. He said: “Fair play to Jeremy Quin for coming in to Collyer’s today. He answered all of the questions and gave us a good idea about careers in politics and what life is like for an MP.” The second-year students who attended the session included students studying all kinds of subjects at Collyer’s, with a strong contingent of politics students and those currently studying the innovative Employability Programme at Collyer’s. The course, which started in September, has been uniquely designed by the college to help stu-

dents into the world of work with the help of taught sessions, workshops, trips and a host of inspiring special guests. Nishat Zaman, who is studying the Employability course at Collyer’s alongside her A-levels, said: “The television style Q&A format worked really well and it was good that Jeremy spoke to students at the end, to answer some individual questions.” Tom Williams said: “It was great to have the opportunity to speak to Jeremy Quin. I asked him about life in the House of Commons and how it all worked.” Steve Martell, who teaches the Employability Programme at Collyer’s, said: “Massive thanks to Jeremy Quin for his continued interest in all that we are doing at Collyer’s. Our students confidently asked intelligent questions, which was great to see.” Principal Sally Bromley said: “It was lovely to welcome Jeremy back to Collyer’s. Our students, teachers and all within the Collyer’s community really appreciate the time he’s spent with us today.” Lucy Hargreaves added: “Today’s session is one of the college’s numerous progression initiatives that run throughout the year, including: mock interviews, employability skills workshops, HE evenings and networking lunches. “As we start the new year we have some superb guest speakers lined up for Q&A sessions, mock assessment days and our Not Going to Uni (NG2U) evening for Collyer’s students, which is coming up on the 7th February.”

Driving lessons for 10-17s launch for the first time in Horsham

A groundbreaking driver training course aimed at 10-17 year olds has announced it will launch in Horsham for the first time. The first Young Driver event will be held this Sunday (28 January) on a large, specially designed course at the Hop Oast Park and Ride, offering anyone over the age of 10 the chance to drive a car in a safe, but realistic, environment. Four hundred people are killed in accidents involving young drivers every year in the UK. Shockingly, one in five newly qualified drivers crash within six months of passing their test, rising to 40 per cent of 17-year old males. Only eight per cent of drivers are aged 17 – 24 and yet they account for a worrying 30 per cent of people who are killed in cars every year. But for those who have taken a

Young Driver course, the rate of accidents in that worrying first six months drops by more than a half, to fewer than one in ten. The scheme has now given more than 500,000 lessons at over 50 venues across Britain. During the lessons, dual controlled Vauxhall Corsas are used and tuition is provided by highly qualified driving instructors. On a specially constructed road system with traffic signs, and specific areas for practising manoeuvres, youngsters are encouraged to consider responsible driving and are given time to perfect the necessary driving skills, without the pressures of public roads. A personalised Drive Diary charts how they do. Laura White, head of marketing at Young Driver, said: “We are

really excited to be launching our Horsham venue. We have been actively looking for sites in the area for quite some time. The Hop Oast Park and Ride will give us a great, large, open space, on which we’ll create a road system, and there will be plenty of opportunities for youngsters to try out lots of technical driving skills. “With one in five young people crashing within six months of passing their test, it is vital something is done to help our youngsters become safer drivers. We believe it is important to train drivers over a longer period of time and that catching youngsters when their attitudes towards driving are still developing, is key to producing a safer driver. By starting at a younger age, you can more easily focus on attitude and behaviour and you have a better chance of tackling a young person’s sense of invulnerability.” Driving tuition is available for disabled youngsters and Young Driver can also cater for birthday parties. Thirty or sixty-minute lessons must be booked in advance. Lessons start from £34.95. Current confirmed dates for Young Driver to run at Horsham are 28 January, 25 February, 15 and 29 April and 13 May. For more information, to book a lesson or to buy vouchers, please visit: www.youngdriver.com or call 0844 371 9010.

All Work and No Play: New exhibition at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery

Work is such a core part of many people’s lives and can be integral to a person’s identity and sense of self-worth. Yet All Work and No Play is the first time Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery has held an exhibition on the topic of work. This fascinating and eye-open-

According to the architect of Royal and Sun Alliance insurance building, an “office should be a theatre for the occupants – a place where they have a chance to actually look good, feel good, dress up”. You wouldn’t expect to meet someone called Joan Scientist, Frederick Typewriter, or Pete Bricklayer, yet surnames such as Fletcher, Cook and Butcher seem perfectly normal. However, these are all the names of jobs that people did in the medieval period that have been adopted as surnames.

ing exhibition reveals the wide variety of roles that Victorian women undertook in Horsham, ranging from baking to brick making and beyond. The exhibition also looks at apprenticeships, a topic that has been in the news recently. On display are some of the legal contracts that set out the agreement between master and apprentice, as well as William Hogarth’s biting morality tale of the apprentice gone bad. Hogarth’s tale was used by masters

in the exhibition, such as those worn by a postman, a nurse and a maid. Uniforms could also indicate the high status of the wearer, as exemplified by our portrait of Sir Cecil Hurst in his judicial robes. Other examples of legal costume, such as barrister’s wigs, wig curlers and an 18th century wig hanger, are also on display. For many people today, work is focused on the keyboard, yet its predecessor, the typewriter, is only 140 years old. A range of examples of this ingenious technology are on display in the exhibition, many of which were rescued from the scrapheap as businesses modernised. There are many unusual objects related to local trades, such as a table used to sell cakes on the Carfax, a saddlers stool, a tradesman’s bike, and the day book of an 18th century solicitor, as well as items relating to the town’s notable trades, such as brickmaking, engineering and brewing. Using a wealth of photographs, documents, objects, and paintings, this exhibition reveals the unusual, interesting and entertaining facets of all types of work. All Work and No Play is open now and closes on 21 March, admission free. For more information, please visit: www.horshammuseum.org

Cervical screening rates fall across West Sussex ‘Don’t be complacent - reduce your risk of cervical cancer’ is the advice of health chiefs, as screening rates across the country fall to a 20 year low. Every day, 9 women in the UK are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 3 women will lose their lives to the disease. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35, but is largely preventable thanks to cervical screening and the HPV vaccination programme. But statistics show that the number of women aged 25-29 years of age, being screened for cervical cancer, is the lowest in any age group, and numbers attending for screening are falling year on year. This year, the first girls who were vaccinated against HPV are also eligible for screening as they reach their 25th birthday. Surveys, undertaken by cancer charities, indicate embarrassment and a lack of understanding of the causes of cervical cancer may be behind the fall in numbers attending. The number of women dying from cervical cancer has halved over the past 28 years as a result of the NHS screening programme, as well as improvement in treatment. Despite this success, over 5,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Some of these women may have delayed coming forward for screening for a variety of reasons, but treatment of early changes detected by screening can prevent women from developing cancer. Dr Max Kammerling, Consultant in Public Health Medicine and Head of the Public Health Screening and

Immunisation Team for Surrey and Sussex, said: “It is really important for young women to understand the importance of attending cervical screening as it can detect pre-cancer abnormalities, which, if left untreated, may develop into cancer. Screening is for people without symptoms as a preventative measure. “The screening test is

relatively simple, takes about 5 minutes and is performed by the practice nurse at your GP surgery. 95% of results will be normal and, of those that are not, the vast majority can be treated very easily and will never develop into cancer.” NHS England and Public Health England are supporting Cervical Cancer Prevention Week which runs from January 22-28. The week aims to raise awareness of the importance of cervical screening and its role in preventing cancer, as well as encouraging women to go for their screening test when invited. NHS England’s Screening and Immunisation teams also work with GP practices to increase

awareness. NHS England has signed up to the Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust ‘Time to Test’ pledge, demonstrating commitment to raising awareness of cervical cancer prevention in the workplace and ensuring female employees can access cervical screening. The pledge states: The health of our employees comes first and if employees cannot make appointments out of working hours, we will find a way to make sure they can attend cervical screening, even if it means doing so during their working day. Women can reduce their risk of cervical cancer by: Practising safe sex: Condoms can help reduce the risk of being infected with HPV Not smoking: The risk of developing cervical cancer if you are a non- smoker, on average, is half that of a woman who is smoker Attending cervical screening when invited: this can help to find cervical abnormalities and HPV infections before they are able to develop into cervical cancer. Vaccination: getting the HPV vaccination if you are eligible (for girls at school in Year 8) will protect you from the highrisk HPV types 16 and 18 that cause 70% off all cervical cancers.

Ping Pong fever hits Horsham! Business Martin Read - Sports Reporter Something amazing has happened in Horsham’s Swan Walk – a Ping Pong Parlour has opened! Sited in a former shop near the Carfax entrance of the mall, the parlour is already proving very popular and is open every day – from 9.30 on weekdays (until 5.30) and 11am on Sundays, until 4pm. The parlours are part of Table Tennis England’s vision to inspire people to get active and lead happier, healthy lives by introducing tables into places where they spend time in their everyday lives. The project is supported by the National Lottery with investment from Sport England as part of its work to deliver a mass participation legacy from the London 2012 Olympics and Para Olympic Games. Pop up Ping Pong Parlours have been successfully trialled in locations across England, including Bristol, London, Maidenhead, Northampton and Norwich. And, in Swan Walk the parlour was attracting a lot of interest from passers by, with players eager and waiting to get onto one of the two tables. Participation is free with bats and balls provided, no need to book – just turn up and play - and Millais schoolgirl friends Holly Skilton and Dani

Littlejohn, who had learned table tennis at school, were enjoying a game, telling the District Post: “We came yesterday, we just saw it in passing and it was great free fun, so we came again today!” On the next table Sandu Marian was engaged in serious competition with his friend Enia Gheorghe, saying: “It’s a lovely idea!” Long term resident Daphne Barraclough then accepted a challenge from this reporter, enthusing:

Swan Walk is delighted to have joined up with the Ping! And loop team at Table Tennis England.. “This is brilliant – a fantastic surprise – I haven’t played for at least 20 years!” Martin Smith took over, challenging his 12 year old son, Joseph, adding “This is a brilliant project – Joseph has been off school and this is part of his recovery programme.”

Internet comments from participants elsewhere are enthusiastic and Table Tennis England feedback forms are available in the parlour, with the chance of winning a £50 Amazon voucher. Ping Pong originated in Victorian England as an upper-class after dinner game, perhaps invented by British military officers in India in the 1860s or 1870s, with the suggestion that a row of books might have been stood up across the table to form a net, with two more books used to hit a golf ball. Others have advanced the theory that today’s table tennis developed from ‘Whiff Whaff’ when champagne corks were propelled with cigar box lids used as bats. Today’s professional equipment is far more sophisticated, along with playing techniques involving a variety of grips and spinning shots, with Chinese players carrying off many of the honours. But, there is no need to be an expert at Horsham’s Ping Pong Parlour – the scheme is for all levels of players, with the emphasis on fun, Swan Walk’s Gill Buchanan saying: “Swan Walk is delighted to have joined up with the Ping! And loop team at Table Tennis England, the sports governing body, to bring this exciting project to life in Horsham.”

New music gig for singles Comedy gold at The Hawth in 2018 is the talk of the town

Something exciting is happening in Horsham; you may have heard the rumblings about this fantastic new community-driven social night out, so we’re here to reveal all about Band-Date! The live music gig for awesome singles. Band-Date is the creation of Emma Cavallo, one half of local events and marketing duo ‘e-social butterflies’ and it’s all heart. “We know so many amazing single people in Horsham and the local area, who would like to find someone special and deserve to find love, so we’ve made it our mission to try and help in the most fun and relaxed way possible. The dating game is so much harder these days with the complexities of apps, online dating and the busy pace of life, it’s difficult to find the time to muster the incredible effort it takes to sift through the online dating world. We’re hoping that Band-Date brings the fun and excitement back of meeting new people in person at a social event, like old times! Band-Date is for all the genuine, happy, single people in our town or however far you’re willing to travel!” explains Emma Band-Date is essentially a live music gig, with a different local band at each event. It’s about singles getting back to grass roots socialising. Forget your mobile phones and internet dating for the night. We’re talking good, old fashioned, real-life socialising, at a live music gig, where the main focus is on the music and the brilliant thing is that you know everyone in the crowd is single, so the opportunities are there to meet new people*. You can even bring a wingman with you if you’re feeling a little shy. Alongside the live music, you can try your skills at a game of beer pong, plus there’s also the chance to win some great prizes with a few nonobligatory competitions thrown in too. The Band-Date team will be there ensuring everyone feels welcome, is not on their own, and is hopefully having a good time! After the great success of their launch event in November, the next highly anticipated Band-Date will be on Friday 9 th March – 8pm at their regular venue, The Gig Room, Horsham Sports Club, Cricketfield Road. The event features ‘Strobe’ an awesome six piece band, with music ranging from classic hits to modern day chart tracks, who are famous in these parts for filling dancefloors! Horsham Sports Club Bar Manager Chris Shambrook tells us “over 140 people turned up to the first Band-Date, the place was buzzing and everyone was in great spirits. The night had lift-off with the incredible Joe90 Band delivering their seamless Brit Pop and Rock anthems late

on into the night. We can’t wait to host the next Band-Date”. The night is aimed at singles aged 30+ (30ish to 55ish) but they won’t be I.D.ing and everyone is welcome. They’ll also be hosting a specific 50+ event in the near future too, so do follow the page on Facebook at @BandDateHorsham or sign up to the meetup.com group online for all the info. (search Band-Date! Horsham on meetup.com) BandDate is for genuine, happy and fun singles, who love live music; and though there’s absolutely no pressure at all to mingle, you’re likely to meet some great new friends and who knows you may even find love... Tickets are £12.50pp** which includes your first drink and are available online via Eventbrite, or direct from Horsham Sports Club. Tickets are available from 15 th Jan and the link will be posted on all social media and at www. horshamsportsclub.com or call the club on 01403 254628 Search @ BandDateHorsham on Facebook. *95% of people there are single. A few of the wingmen (friends who are there for support) and organisers are not single, and will wear ‘wingman’ badges to denote this. **small online fee applies when booking through eventbrite

This Spring The Hawth proves that it certainly deserves its reputation as a comedy hotspot, as the Crawley venue plays host to so much comedy in the new season that it is almost bursting at the seams. The hilarious Tim Vine, Iain Stirling and Joe Lycett have already sold out, but never fear, there’s still plenty to tickle your funny bone. Whether you want to see an old favourite or a face from TV live on stage or you like to experiment and try something completely different with a newcomer to the comedy scene, the new season of comedy has something for you. Stephen Bailey brings his show, Can’t Think Straight (Feb 7) to the Studio this February. His friendly, open brand of gossipy humour has made him one of the

most enjoyable acts on the circuit. In the same month audiences can look forward to blistering new comedy from Phil Wang in Kinabalu (Feb 8) and a new show from podcast host and ‘expert stand-up’ (Times) Stuart Goldsmith; Like I Mean It (Feb 17). Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Larry Dean is being hailed as one of the UK comedy scene’s fiercest new talents and will be bringing his show Fandan (March 2) to Crawley in March. Also taking to the stage that month is Hawth favourite Jonathan Pie with Back to The Studio (March 6). He’s back and he’s

angrier than ever. Join him for a night of political comedy that soon descends into chaos. In April, Jenny Eclair, Dillie Keane and Lizzie Roper return as Grumpy Old Women to the Rescue (April 11), do deliver 90 minutes of brand new, full fat, batteries included comedy from the mistresses of grump. Jason Manford also makes a welcome return with Muddle Class (April 19) where he works through his confusion at growing up ‘working class’ only to find he’s become ‘middle class’. Finally, in April, Suzi Ruffell will be Keeping It Classy (April 19) with her thought-provoking and hilarious show that has gained her the working-class comedy crown for her generation. On 9 November 2016, two momentous moments happened to Angela Barnes - Donald Trump won the US election and she turned 40. Come along to see her show Fortitude (May 12) this May and find out what affect this has had on Angela in the funniest possible way. The multi-talented and irrepressible Brian Conley will be performing his new show Still The Greatest Entertainer - In His Price Range (May 19) and star of They Think It’s All Over, Lee Hurst is back on the road with his brand new show Mucking About (May 25) - he’ll turn up and lob gags and funny stuff at you from all angles. Tickets are available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 and by visiting www. hawth.co.uk.

A Horsham Photographic Society Charity Evening It was a very successful year for Horsham Photographic Society. Some of our members were rewarded for their hard work; obtaining distinctions from The Royal Photographic Society, with more hoping to obtain distinctions in the coming months. Horsham Photographic Society has been running for over 65 years; its members having produced high quality work throughout that time. The high standard continues today with a programme which has something of interest for everyone. There is always someone at hand to help with any aspect of photography and potential members are able to attend up to three meetings before joining to be sure we meet their expectations. We are looking forward to the coming year and are starting on a positive note and inviting members of the public to enjoy one of our favourite speakers, Ken Scott ARPS. Ken will give us a talk about his experience last year when he set out on a highly ambitious plan to walk solo around the coastline of Britain for his two chosen charities: Parkinson’s UK and the RNLI. Your £5 entry fee will go to his chosen charities as mentioned

above. It may not be the hardest challenge in terms of terrain or unfamiliar territory, but it is long and committing. Since it was first done in 1978 by the nowlegendary John Merrill, perhaps only a few dozen people have made a complete round -Britain circuit in one walk, though many have walked and are currently walking the coast in stages. Whilst Ken has been attracted throughout his adult life more to mountain adventures, this walk has never left his mind, all 5,600 miles (9,000 kms) of it. So in February 2017, Ken set out from his home in West Sussex to walk solo around the coast of Britain. The driving force behind Ken’s photography is a passion for the

mountains and the ever-changing quality of natural light, to which he responds in the moment to produce striking and soulful images. Place is less important in Ken’s work than the atmosphere and the intensity of the experience. To feel the wil-

derness to its full extent, Ken camps away from everyday life, immersing himself in silence, space and light, especially in those magic hours at the beginning and end of the day.

Ken will cover not only a visual record of our country’s coastline; he will tell the story of a challenging physical and emotional journey, full of anecdotes and reminiscences. Ken’s unique style of presentation and photography will mix landscapes and light, people, abstract art and everyday observations. His talks have never disappointed us; he is a professional speaker, photography coach and adventurer who took this opportunity to explore our own wonderful island. This talk, for which we are donating all monies from the evening to Parkinson’s UK and the RNLI, will be held at The Salvation Army, Booth Way, Horsham RH13 5PZ, on Wednesday, 7 February 2018 at 7.45pm for a prompt start at 8pm. Parking and seating is limited and Ken is very popular, so it will be essential to reserve a seat. A £5 charge is payable on the evening, which includes refreshments. We are only able to accept cash or cheque. Please go to our website for booking details: www.horshamphotographicsociety.co.uk or contact Anne 01403 891126.

Drama Pupils Celebrate in Style

Horsham district’s residents are generally excellent at recycling; the recycling is mostly clean and in good condition for reprocessors to make it into new stuff. However recent analysis of Horsham’s waste has shown that a large amount of recycling is still being thrown in the rubbish bin, along with other items that can be recycled elsewhere. The info graphic opposite shows what was found and how these materials can be reduced, reused or recycled. • Did you know that you can recycle empty aerosol cans and clean foil in your blue-top bin?

Earlier this month, the cast, crew and gospel choir at Christ’s Hospital School celebrated the success of the senior production of ‘The Crucible’ in style. Over a thousand audience members witnessed Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ at the School’s theatre, last term, in a production that showcased the skills of a full double cast and crew of senior pupils. The theatre was adapted so that the audience surrounded the ‘in-the-round’ staging, making an intimate and intense theatrical experience. For the celebratory cast party, organised by John Johnson, Director of Drama and his team, the red carpet led up to the theatre, where pupils were treated to canapés, ‘champagne-esque’ welcome drinks and popcorn to munch on, as they watched themselves on the big screen. Following this, Oscar style awards were presented to the cast for a range of categories, including ‘best newcomer’ and ‘cast hero’. The evening ended with dancing and selfies. With rehearsals for the junior production of ‘Bugsy Malone’ already up and running and planning for the senior production of ‘West Side Story’ underway, there is a great deal to look forward to for those involved in drama at Christ’s Hospital.

The association also needs a telephonist to work from home to take appointments for its Community Transport Service. Carers Support West Sussex needs support group co-facilitators to help provide a confidential space for carers to meet, offload and gain information. They also need telephone support volunteers to help carers share emotions and reduce stress and isolation by providing active listening. And the charity seeks young adult carer engagement volunteers to meet and communicate regularly with young adult carers to support them. If you want to know more about any of the opportunities above or are thinking of volunteering and want to know what’s out there, just log on to www.hamsva.org.uk/opportunities and explore the many ways in which you can get involved in your community. Can you help beat hunger by offering a couple of hours at your local Tesco store on Nov 30 or December 1 or 2? Horsham Ladies second after hard fought win

Horsham crash in must win encounter Saturday January 20 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1 4 Henley Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Photos by Nick Evans Saturday January 20 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 1 0 Brighton & Hove Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In miserable, dank conditions with persistent freezing drizzle, Horsham Ladies warmed the spirits of their supporters with a gritty win, securing their second in the table spot with 29 points – one more than third-placed Basingstoke, Surbiton 2s remaining top with 32 points and a game in hand. Although Brighton & Hove are 8th and Horsham beat them 1-3 at the coast in October, they battled hard and are no pushover, confirming that there are no easy games in this league, except perhaps for basement club Staines,

whose only relief has been a single draw from their 13 matches to date. In the first half Horsham earned a short corner and created opportunities, but the scoreline remained goal-less at the break. On the resumption Becky Williams sustained a stick injury, necessitating sideline attention. Then, Bex Ross broke through but the prostrate Fran Crossley was just unable to convert against the side she recently represented. Soon afterwards, though, Suzy Clapp fired in a powerful strike from the right to give Horsham the lead. With Becky Williams back on the field and with Brighton’s defence suddenly looking porous she smashed goal-wards, only to find the side netting. A rare Brighton strike was kicked away before their forlorn backhand attempt went wide. An accurate Horsham build up between Louisa Denman, Fran Crossley, Suzy Clapp and Becky Williams was

averted at the last minute, followed by a Horsham short corner and Tiff Male breaking through. Although these moves came to nothing Horsham successfully closed the game down to win 1-0. Elated Horsham Captain Hannah Simpson told the District Post: “We didn’t score as many goals as we’d have liked but we showed plenty of character and determination to grind out the result we wanted and a win is a win! In view of the local rivalry between the teams we expected a tough game and that’s what it was. It is great to come away with another clean sheet – but I didn’t have to save too many today.” With 8 games remaining, the Ladies travel to fourth placed Teddington on Saturday. Teddington are 2 points behind Horsham, but they have played a game less and beat Horsham 0-1 at Christ’s Hospital in October.

This foot of the table clash was a crucial game for both sides, but it ended in tears for the hosts when Henley notched up only their second win of the season, completing a double over Horsham. After early Henley possession, Horsham’s Barney KnightsJohnson got in a strike, followed by another from Freddie Campbell. Then, Horsham earned a short corner, from which a Knights-Johnson backhander went wide. Andrew Isaacs followed up with a save in the Horsham goal before kicking away a Henley short. Horsham were giving as good as they were getting – Angus MacDonald firing without success from the first of two Horsham shorts in quick succession. Henley responded with an attack and a cross was knocked in to give them the lead. They could have scored again almost immediately, but Horsham broke away to mount a foray right on half time, the score remaining 0-1 at the break. The second half opened with a controversial Henley short corner, saved by Isaacs, who then ran out to block another insurgence. On his seasonal debut, Dom Male

promptly scythed through to supply Knights-Johnson, but the danger was averted, before, with 12 minutes remaining, Henley took the ball to the other end to double their advantage. Another short corner was then saved by Isaacs, but 4 minutes later Henley scored again. A Joey Humphreys run culminated in Horsham’s fourth short corner, which was well cleared off the line, yet, despite Horsham fighting hard Henley got the ball in the net for the fourth time, Jonty Clarke completing a hat trick. Although the clock was running down fast, there was just long enough for Knights-Johnson to score a consolation goal but the large, shivering crowd of Horsham supporters shared the players’ disappointment. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “We were still very much in the game at half time but we kept giving the ball away and our short corner techniques are lacking. Henley are an experienced side and unfortunately they deserved to win.” Oxford Hawks are top, ahead of London Edwardians. This Saturday Horsham have a tough assignment when they travel to Old Cranleighans (3rd) – Old Crans beat Horsham 0-4 at Christ’s Hospital in the third week of the season. With 9 games to play and a mountain to climb, Horsham have slipped to bottom, 2 points adrift from Henley.

Lifesavers Mandy & Katie receive heart-warming award

Sports News Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last April Horsham resident John Inman had a dramatic visit to the squash courts at Horsham Sports Club’s Cricketfield Road.

And, he and was delighted to be able to convey his heartfelt thanks to Mandy Barnett and Katie Maguire for their highly significant role in saving his life. Mandy and Katie were jointly installed as Club Person of the Year at the

club’s AGM, where John explained that he had been playing a league match against Mandy and, after winning 3-0, he suggested a further, friendly, game. John felt perfectly well, without any hint of a problem but before the friendly game could get under way he suddenly stopped and keeled over, smashing his face. Fortunately for John, his opponent Mandy works at Holbrook Surgery, where she has received regularly updated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. And, he was even luckier when trainee nurse Katie Maguire was summoned from her part time job in the bar. While an ambulance was called Mandy and Katie worked hard, intervening to keep John alive, Mandy telling the District Post: “We were a good team and it took the two of us to keep John going. It seemed an age for the ambulance to come, but in reality it wasn’t long. It was only when we were able to finish our emergency treatment to restore his breathing and circulation and hand over to the ambulance crew that what had happened really hit me!” John said: “I had no symptoms and the heart attack came completely out of the blue.” John’s wife Marion added: “John can’t remember anything about the incident, but he was taken to Bright-

on’s County Hospital for intensive care and was put into an induced coma under the chill technique to preserve his brain function.” John subsequently had a stent fitted and, in his 60s looking and feeling healthy, has returned to his part time job. Is he playing squash again? “I’ve switched to tennis!” John quipped. At the Sports Club fund raising had been underway to buy a second defibrillator – and this is now in place, on the outside of the building, after club member Brian Potter had asked for contributions towards it instead of presents for his wedding. The target was duly reached and, after the club supplied the cabinet, the defibrillator has been installed. Meanwhile, Katie Maguire has

competed her qualifications and is now a nurse in the Royal Navy at Plymouth, saying: “I was only too happy to be able to work with Mandy to help John, putting some of my training into practice and its wonderful that he’s made a full recovery.”

RUFC former hooker gives us the lowdown on this years 6 nations RUSS BEDFORD

Sports Reporter

The 6 nations is fast approaching and for Rugby fans its the first chance this year to see their nation competing for silverware. I met up with former Horsham RUFC hooker Matt Stone to talk about the forthcoming tournament. England start as favourites and following on from two successful campaigns where they lifted the trophy, is it possible the red and whites could do what hasn’t been done before and win it for a third successive time? Matt seems to think so, “ I think its right we start as favourites with the strength of the squad. Looking at the autumn international series before Christmas, none of the home nations looked particularly great. Apart from Scotland, they are the ones to watch I think.” With success comes pressure and as England look to make history it could be that the weight of expectation on the players proves to be their undoing, “ No, I don’t think there will be any added pressure on the lads, Eddie Jones (England coach) seems to have installed in the guys that we take each game one by one.” As in most sport, teams often field some exceptional talent but have a few weak spots. Look at Liverpool in the premier league, an attack most teams would love to have, but a defence that constantly looks shaky. Does our England team have any areas that give Matt extra confidence or concern? “I think our strengths lie with our forward pack, and having Owen Farrell in any side is a bonus, his kicking ability is second to none and I’m hoping to see him play at 12 with Marcus Smith being given a chance at fly half.” The squad has been rocked by injuries recently and Jones has had to call in 8 uncapped players, things like this can be of huge detriment to the team as it Matt Stone

adapts to change but Matt doesn’t seem to think it will change much, “the talent that has come in is great, we must hope Jones picks the form players.” So whilst England are favourites amongst fans and bookies alike, Italy appear rank outsiders. Some bookmakers quoting 500/1 for the azzuri to win outright, “Italy wont be a threat, France will be our toughest game I think but Scotland worry me.” No mention of Ireland or Wales but not being a rugby fan myself I take it as a given that the three teams to watch from what Matt has told me will be England, France and Scotland. Reflecting on past glories led us to chat about sporting memories, mine tend to revolve around football, formula one and boxing but as we were covering rugby I asked Matt about his favourite 6 nations memory, “ my favourite memory was when it was the 5 nations in 1991. England won the grand slam, its one of my first rugby memories and has stuck with me ever since.” I looked up the celebrations on youtube and its safe to say I can see why for rugby fans it meant something special. Seeing the fans, the trophy and the coverage it gained made it look like rugby was close to being on a par with football. I wanted to know if, as a fan, Matt felt his sport was loosing out on the riches that adorn the premier league and that could the lack of huge levels of revenue harm its development as sponsors, fans and potential club owners look elsewhere? “ the coverage of rugby is getting better, with channel 5 picking up the first domestic live game on terrestrial tv in many years over Christmas. As a fan id love to see more of this. Socially rugby carries a great ethos and with local clubs opening their doors to televise games and some local pubs going the extra mile to entertain fans. The Coot and The Bedford in the summer laying on breakfasts for fans wanting to watch the lions games for example. This saw a large number of people that weren’t fans or wouldn’t normally go out of their way to watch rugby join in, even singing the songs and wearing the fancy dress!” The brief time that we have been able to chat has showed me how much excitement this tournament can bring and on Feb 10th when England play their first game against Wales, I might just check it out.

YMCA go second with another clean sheet win was disallowed for offside. Two YM corners followed, with the Littlehampton keeper complaining that his defence were being too generous. Yet, Littlehampton were having their moments – YM’s Tom Gilbert kicking the ball away for one of their three consecutive corners, the last of which resulted from Aaron Jeal brilliantly saving an Alfie Gritt volley just before half time. Restarting 2-0 adrift, Littlehampton had an attack cleared off the line by Donaldson before, in a one on one with the visiting keeper, Johnson was somehow deprived. YM were defending well again and, after a Littlehampton free kick had gone harmlessly wide, Jeal advanced to

Saturday January 20 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 2 0 Littlehampton Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter With adverse weather restricting SCFL matches to just one other game, YM were delighted to notch up another win – escalating them to second. In slippery conditions controlling the ball was challenging - YM coped better and made the early showing, a strong Sam Schaaf header being tipped over for the first of their six corners. Then, in the 10th minute, after Littlehampton keeper John Hendrick dropped the ball, Phil

Johnson scrambled it in, putting YM ahead. Schaaf’s participation ended abruptly when, chasing a fast exiting ball, he slid over the goal line and cut his knee on the fencing. After a rare Littlehampton attack was kicked off for an unfulfilled corner, Johnson hit the post with Hendrick beaten and then, on 19 minutes, following an inadequate clearance, he broke through the defence, skirting the keeper to double YM’s lead. Johnson continued to worry Littlehampton – the Marigolds – only to see his shot saved by the keeper’s legs, before a Dave Brown blast crashed into a defender’s body and Ash Dugdale headed wide. Substitute Luke Donaldson was brought down and YM got the ball in the net from the free kick, but the goal

cut down the angle, the attempt passing the goal before Gilbert blocked a Marigolds’ strike. But, the second half was punctuated with more frequent YM chances – a free kick was headed over before Donaldson struck across the goal from the right and another set piece ended in the keeper’s grasp. Two YM corners came to nought and a Brown smash went over ahead of Johnson being thwarted at close range, the game ending with Brown and Luke Gedling forays and YM in command. Post match,YM Assistant Manager, Julian Miller said: “ Littlehampton may be bottom, but the pitch was a leveller and this was our seventh clean sheet in the league this season. It was good to win when other contenders didn’t play. We’ve had little football of late so we need to keep playing.” Now second, YM have 45 points, Haywards Heath lead with 50. Eastbourne Town – whom YM visit on Saturday - follow with, like Chichester, 44. Pagham are 5th on 43. Eastbourne Town have the best defensive record in the league, but YM beat them at Gorings Mead in October.

Horsham’s winning run halted by Herne Bay

Saturday January 20 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 1 2 Herne Bay Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter On a roll with three back to back wins, including the de-

feat of league leaders Lewes, Horsham suffered their first reverse of 2018, forgoing the opportunity to climb the tightly bunched mid table. Now 13th, the Hornets might have been expected to overturn lower table Herne Bay, especially as the Kent side had just lost three games in a row, but, Bay seem to like visiting Culver Road, Lancing – where they eliminated the Hornets 2-5 from the FA Cup in September. And, it was the visitors who caused

the initial concern when, in the opening seconds, Tom Carlton got in a shot before Richard Ismail fired wide. Then, shortly afterwards, Hornets’ keeper Josh Pelling kept out another Carlton effort with his legs. Horsham, though, did get the ball in the net, only for Toby Houses’ strike to be ruled offside. Hakeem Adelakun unleashed a distant attempt, but Ben Hunter in the Bay goal pushed it over before negating a Steve Metcalf header. Both sides continued to create

opportunities – Josh Wisson’s foray petering out for Bay ahead of House being wayward and subsequent Bay pressure coming to nothing after Danny Leonard was off target and Ben Gorman headed a free kick over the bar. Resuming with neither side on the score-sheet, the game eventually ignited with three goals in quick succession. Herne Bay opened the scoring in the 54th minute when, unmarked, Aikhionbare latched onto a Carlton free kick and headed it

home. Then, Bay went further ahead - from an own goal – Metcalf putting Leonard’s probe into the net. A minute later Horsham clawed one back: Tony Nwachukwu pile-driving in Charlie Harris’ supply. Bay, though, remained threatening and ought to have added their third and possibly fourth goals but first Aikhionbare and then Nassin Dukali were wide of the mark. A Metcalf clearance then hit the post, sparing Horsham further embarassment. Finally, with the Hornets pressing for a draw and Herne Bay striving to shut up shop, substitute Dean Bown was unable to convert three chances – first firing wide in a one on one situation, then shooting straight at Hunter, before his header was turned away for an unfulfilled corner. Following the nervous last minutes, Herne Bay were happy to go home with all three points. Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham visit 15th placed Sittingbourne, hoping to avenge their 5-1 punishment at the hands of the Kent side in Lancing last September. News of two players moving on from Horsham – Liam MacDevitt is now with Chipstead, while Matt Boiling has gone back to Worthing.

Supporters club makes further donation to football club’s official charity A Brighton & Hove Albion supporters club has continued its long-term support of the Seagulls’ official charity by donating a further £2,000 to help fund local football sessions for people with a disability. North West Sussex Seagulls (NWSS) launched in the run-up to the Albion’s first-ever season at the American Express Community Stadium and saw fans based in the Horsham area group together to organise coach travel to and from home games. In the seasons since, the number of coaches ferrying fans to the stadium from the Horsham area each game has leaped from one to five and sees almost 300 fans travel down to each home match. NWSS, which has approaching 500 members, also holds regular meetings where fans hear from Albion-themed guest speakers and in recent years the club has welcomed Paul Barber, Tony

Bloom and a number of past and present Seagulls stars. And the group has become a regular supporter of Albion in the Community’s (AITC) work, donating more than £5,000 to the charity during the Albion’s Amex era. Representatives of NWSS committee recently visited the American Express Community Stadium to hand over a cheque for £2,000, which will support Brighton & Hove Albion Cerebral Palsy FC (BHACPFC) – one of AITC’s disability-specific teams that compete in a national competition. Dave Owen, NWSS committee member, explained there was a particular reason why the supporters club wanted to back BHACPFC: “As Brighton & Hove Albion fans we are always keen to do whatever we can to help AITC. The work the charity does across Sussex is something Albion fans should be incredibly proud of.

“One of our members, Callum Budd, plays for BHACPFC and we have seen the hugely-positive impact being involved with AITC has had on him. Callum is a popular member of NWSS and as a group we were keen to provide support for BHACPFC; Callum also helped raise part of our donation by helping with our golden goal competition on his coach throughout the season. “AITC is a fantastic charity and we are delighted to be able to continue to support its work.” Louis Potter Jones, who plays for BHACPFC with Callum, was on hand to collect the cheque alongside AITC coaches Hayley Templeman and Stewart Teeder and the charity’s chief executive Matt Dorn. Thanking NWSS for the donation, Matt Dorn said: “The support we receive from Albion fans is amazing and we are always grateful to groups like NWSS for their help.

“Donations like this help us continue to run our football sessions for people with a disability

and I would like to thank NWSS and all its members for their continued generosity.”
