Barns Green’s Liam Tamne battling for Eurovision glory martin read

Reporter

Wednesday February 7th will be another big day in the burgeoning show business career of local boy Liam Tamne. Having got through to the final six contestants, on that day Barns Green resident Liam will be going head to head in competition with the five other contenders on live BBC TV to earn the right to perform our Eurovision Song in Portugal on May 12th. Liam is no stranger to our screens – he wowed all four judges with his audition on The Voice and was coached by Will.i.Am. On The Voice, his version of Kate Bush’s This Woman’s Work led Kate to enthuse that he is “a fantastic singer with a special talent.” And, Liam has many strings to his bow – he trained as an actor and his impressive repertoire includes Raoul in Phan-

tom of the Opera and Link Larkin in Hairspray, shows in which he was given full rein to display his formidable talent for emotional renditions. Speaking about “Astronaut” – his song for the Eurovision

We always need someone to pick us up and help us through times in our lives that are challenging and sad. We have to help others to soar in life and to be true to who they are.” Liam is a self-confessed “huge reality TV

And, Eurovision has always captivated Liam’s imagination, too, he confirms: “I love how all of the amazing countries come together and celebrate equality and unity, expressing their music in different ways. It’s so moving and inspiring to so many people around the world.” Last year Portugal won the Eurovision Song Contest (for the first time), so, in accordance with tradition, they will host May’s show – the 63rd show - presented by four female presenters from the Altice Arena in Lisbon, when 43 countries will compete. The arena has the capacity for 20,000 spectators and is one of the largest indoor venues in Europe – and, of course, there will be many millions watching on TV around the world. So, how will Liam steady his nerves? “Before going on stage I always do a silly song and dance to try to relax – and I always speak to my late Nan, too!” More on page 5

During Christmas, the Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District piloted a project that would provide a service to the Community while, at the same time, help to ‘green’ our area. Christmas Trees were collected from residents after twelfth night then recycled at an Ashington farm to provide material for use on the farm - all for a minimum donation of £5 per tree. The scheme was publicised by labelling trees in garden centres and handing out leaflets during Rotary’s Christmas collection. Collecting the trees in the Storrington, Pulborough and Ashington areas went smoothly, thanks to the assistance and hard work provided by Chanctonbury Lions Club and by Chris & Len Earl. A total of 100 trees were collected, raising approximately £600, all of which is being donated to Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. All the trees have now been chipped with the residue ready for use around the farm. The chip-

ping operation was undertaken by Rob Dakin of Findon Valley Tree Care who completed the project in a thoroughly professional way and donated his fee to the charity. Rotary’s project coordinator, Tony Vaughan, said: “We are really pleased with how the project went and given the very positive comments by many residents, we anticipate an even larger number of trees next year. For a small donation, residents can avoid all the inconvenience and mess of transporting trees to the tip or burning them, knowing that they will have a ‘green’ end use and that a very worthwhile charity will benefit in the process.” Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club has stated that it is grateful to all of its partners in this venture, including Chanctonbury Lions, Chris & Len Earl and Findon Valley Tree Care; to the participating Christmas Tree retailers (Big Plant Nursery, Gatley’s Country Store and Oldfield Stables); and particularly to all the local residents who supported the project.

Farlington School ran a joint STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Careers initiative recently for Years 7, 8 and 9. Dan Simons facilitated a Marine Engineering Workshop on behalf of the Sea Cadets and the Seafarers’ Association for female students. It started with a discussion of what a career in engineering, and more specifically marine engineering, actually involves and corrected some common misconceptions. They then looked at the science of buoyancy. Some of the guesses as to what the percentages of engineers in the UK are female were far off the mark, but showed that the students have a healthy disregard for gender stereotyping in sciencebased careers. Most of the workshop involved teams of students building a boat out of wire, paper and foil to specific dimensions and testing them

to see how many marbles they could carry before they sank. The students’ ingenuity and practical application of their science knowledge was very impressive and, as a result, the number of marbles a simple small paper boat could carry was far greater than you would expect. The winning boat, named EHN3000 by its design team of Holly, Emma, Naomi and Cara, carried an astounding 279 marbles. This smashed the previous record from all the workshops around London and the South East of 210 marbles. The Science Department is, of course, delighted by the fact that Farlington School now holds the record for best boat (and, unofficially, for best boat names!) but the way every single student took an active part in the workshop, and worked together to design and build their boats, was just as impressive.

Southern’s Jim is blooming brilliant!

Southern’s outgoing Station Manager for Littlehampton, Arundel, Horsham and other stations along the Arun Valley, has been recognised for his 10 years of dedicated support for the Aldingbourne Trust, a charity which supports adults with a learning disability. The trust works with Southern

to provide beautiful flower displays across 30 different stations on the West Coastway and Brighton Mainline. Southern donates funds to help the group undertake this work, providing the opportunity for those involved to develop their confidence and life skills. Without this joint work, many of them would simply stay at home.

Ben, one of the members of the group, presented station manager Jim Cumming with a ‘thank you’ card, plus two flower-filled planters, in recognition of everything he has done to support the group over the decade they have worked together. He explained: “We are sad it’s Jim’s last day with us, but thank him ever so much for all his service over the years.” Patti, one of the group’s coordinators, added: “We are going to miss Jim so much. He’s made such a difference to so many lives, over the years, that we can’t thank him enough.” Jim said: “It’s been a true pleasure working with all over the Aldingbourne Trust over the years and I thoroughly appreciate everything the group does to improve the experience at our stations.” The partnership between Southern and the Aldingbourne Trust started over 10 years ago, with the trust tending flowers at just three stations, including Arundel. Over the years, as they have continued to showcase their work, and often at the request of local station managers, they have expanded their reach to cover more and more stations. While many of the station managers involved have changed over the years, Jim has always been the key point of contact for the group, going out of his way to support their efforts. Jim is moving on to work as a station manager at Brighton station. Steve So, an experienced station manager from the Hove area, has taken over from Jim and will work with the trust in the years to come.

Annual Bird Box Building

Copsale Village Hall kicked off National Village Halls week (22-28 January) with the ever popular annual Bird Box Building event. Despite the sleet and the rain, participants turned out, armed with hammers, to put together a bird box to take home. Local timber merchants, Wenban Smith, once again generously supported the event by donating the wood for the boxes, which was sawn into the required lengths by a Hall Trustee to create the individual kits. During a very noisy morning, nails were hammered through wood and, by the end, nearly

30 boxes had been constructed. Many participants enjoyed a bacon roll and hot drink before heading home to hang their boxes. The Hall is a former cricket pavilion and has been in Copsale for over a century. Plans have been drawn up to improve the facilities on offer, whilst maintaining the unique character of this old building. Fundraising has now started to secure the future of the Hall for the next 100 years. To find out what’s on, please visit: www.copsalehall.com or look at the Copsale Village Hall facebook page.

Time capsule for future Thakeham generations

Children at Thakeham Pre-School took great delight in filling a time capsule to be buried in the gardens of their new premises at Abingworth Meadows ready for future generations to discover. Oakford Homes, who are building the neighbouring new homes in conjunction with Abingworth

Developments, donated the time capsule to mark the pre-school’s arrival at Abingworth Meadows. The pre-school already forms an integral part of Thakeham village community and is set to prosper even further in its specially designed new building. “We are delighted to offer this

We asked all the children what they thought would be the best things to go into it for future boys and girls to discover one day. So as well as some of the special pictures that they’ve made, they voted for a Peppa Pig toy to go in and one little girl wanted to put a feather in there so we’ve included that too.” A history of the pre-school, a staff photo and photos of the current intake of children were also added before the time capsule was sealed. It was then buried in a corner of the outdoor play area and will hopefully remain undiscovered for many years. Abingworth Meadows will feature amenities for all generations, including football pitches, a cricket green with a pavilion, a village store and a new village hall, due to open later this year. Leader calls for long term funding solution from government

Leader Louise Goldsmith ‘The future of vital services will be at risk if government does not take a long term view on local authority funding.’ That’s the stark message from Leader of West Sussex County Council, Louise Goldsmith, who has recently taken the ‘incredibly hard’

decision to recommend a further rise in council tax of 1 per cent, to help cope with rising demand for core services, including child protection and adult social care. Recommendations to take advantage of the extra 1 per cent, as offered by government earlier this month, were put to the council’s Performance and Finance Select Committee for scrutiny by councillors last month. This would bring the council tax raise for West Sussex residents to 4.95 per cent – the equivalent of an additional 12.6p per week for the average Band D council tax payer. The committee endorsed the Medium Term Financial Strategy and draft revenue budget for 2018/19. The proposals were discussed by the County Council’s Cabinet on January 30 and will be voted on at the Full Council meeting on February 16. Louise Goldsmith said: “It could be easy to forget just how wide reaching the services we provide are. We are there for our residents from the day they are born until the day they die. We are the biggest provider of care, bar the hospitals, in the county. We keep our older people safe from harm and independent for longer, we keep children safe, in care and at home, we protect them and support them and we educate them. We are the Fire and Rescue service, keeping

people safe in an emergency and preventing those emergencies in the first place. We are there to keep our county moving by keeping our roads running, our potholes filled. “One way or another, there is little part of life in West Sussex that we are not responsible for or involved in. None of this we do lightly. But we need to plan, we need to be able to continue to evolve and grow, as the issues and demands change, and we simply can’t do that with a short term view of our finances. “It is wrong for us, and County Council’s across the country, to continue to have to be reliant on taxing our residents in the current piecemeal way every year to attempt to plug the gap left by central government. “We have played our part well, when Government asked us to, and taken more than 30 per cent out of our budget at exactly the same time as demand and need rises. It’s time that the Government supports us with a properly funded long term settlement that enables us to plan and prepare for the challenges we know are ahead and in particular to help our growing elderly population. “We are not alone in West Sussex; This is a national problem that deserves a national answer. I, and many other council leaders have been asking for years for a long

term solution to local government finances.” Mrs Goldsmith explained that it went against all her instincts to consider taking the ‘incredibly hard decision’ to raise council tax when she knows some residents are struggling with their own finances, but added that it would also be against her instincts to not offer the high quality services that the residents deserve: “This decision would mean that vital services can continue to run and be developed without us having to make extremely difficult decisions about the future of some those services we know our residents rely on. It would also mean we can move forward more quickly on key priorities, as set out in our West Sussex Plan, to support those people who are struggling and the most vulnerable in our society. This includes proposals to tackle homelessness in the county, working with our local authority partners to increase the amount of temporary accommodation available, improving the safety of our roads, accelerating our programmes on solar energy, adding to the hardship fund we hold to help residents when they need it the most, developing a programme of volunteering in the county, as well as developing our infrastructure locally and making sure we support our residents by developing their life chances.”

Westlake House care home in Horsham prepared a traditional Burns Night Supper to the tune of bagpipes and capers, which continued well into the wee small hours! Staff and residents at the

home were involved in a number of activities singing and learning the art of Scottish Country music, to mark the Scottish institution, including giving the time-honoured address to the ‘Great chieftain O’ the pudding’ race’ – the Haggis. Elizabeth Higson, General Manager at Westlake House, thought it was a perfect occasion to celebrate an evening steeped in age-old tradition as well as getting in a spot of Scotch whisky tasting whilst singing the medley of Burns’ songs. Everyone enjoyed the Dundee cakes. Ryan McFee said: “Our residents have enjoyed a hearty meal of Scotch broth, Haggis with neeps and tatties. I have enjoyed preparing them as the residents have been looking forward to the occasion.” A resident at the home said: “I enjoyed acting out the part of the whisky-bearer and asking everyone to raise a dram to toast the Haggis, I actually preferred my Rose wine as the whisky was too strong for me’’. Westlake House is one of more than 200 care homes belonging to Barchester Healthcare that has built up excellent reputations within its local communities. The home regularly holds events and activities for its residents and surrounding neighbours.

Family finances in the Horsham Horsham Organ/Keyboard area ‘at breaking point’ according Society 40th Anniversary to leading money advice charity As the post-Christmas blues take effect and credit card bills land on the doormat, many families in Horsham District face a financial crisis around this time of year, according to local debt advice charity Horsham Debt Advice Service. The charity is part of Community Money Advice’s national network of advice centres, where trained debt advisers offer free, confidential, face-to-face advice and support to help people find relief from debt and financial hardship, and was featured on the BBC’s Inside Out programme (Monday 15 January on BBC1), which focused on consumer debt problems. Recent statistics from the Bank of England show unsecured consumer debt has increased by 19% in the past 5 years and currently stands at £201.5bn. Household debt has been growing much faster than household income and the Office for Budget Responsibility predicts unsecured household debt will reach 47% of income by 2021. Total consumer debt including mortgages is now over £1.5 trillion. Mike Bone, Chairman of Horsham Debt Advice Service explained: “In the last year, Horsham Debt Advice Service has helped 35 more families struggling with debt and financial problems. Family budg-

ets are often extremely tight, and it is very easy to find debts spiral out of control, particularly when family circumstances change. “Our trained advisors offer free, confidential face to face advice. Those struggling from debt tell us of the relief they find from talking with an advisor who can help them start to resolve the prob-

lems. We rely on a team of dedicated team of trained and knowledgeable volunteers to provide this essential service, which is funded by Horsham Churches Together.” Community Money Advice supports a network of 157 local money advice centres. In 2017, the centres supported 9,033 families struggling with £110 Million debt. 17,854 people affected by debt were supported by their caseworkers. Community Money Advice are concerned that spiralling levels of unsecured consumer debt and low wage growth is leaving many family budgets at

breaking point. This is affecting families across a wide range of livelihoods. Heather Keates, Chief Executive of Community Money Advice, said: “It is concerning to see consumer debts at record levels at a time of year when families often face their greatest financial pressures. Every day in Community Money Advice centres, caseworkers see, firsthand, the distress financial worries place upon individuals and families. The Christmas and New Year holidays should bring families together, however, so often money worries can drive families apart. We urge anyone experiencing debt and money problems to seek free professional help - it is possible to find freedom from the stranglehold of debt.” Community Money Advice encourage anyone who is experiencing stress from money problems to seek professional help. For further information, please call Horsham Debt Advice Service: 01403 258040 or email: hdas@btconnect. com

On Wednesday 10 January, the Horsham Organ/Keyboard Society met at the YMCA in Horsham for their 40th and last Anniversary Meeting. The Society, started by Mike Randon and Ian Wollen, had grown from strength to strength over the years with many talented players. The evening was a

celebration of 40 wonderful years of listening to great music and making so many friends. During the evening, the Society presented their three chosen charities with cheques; Billingshurst Macmillan Group were delighted to receive one of the cheques for the amount of £1000.

Students discuss employability

Approximately 170 pupils, parents and teachers from Forest, Millais and Tanbridge House schools attended Collyer’s “Not Going to Uni” (NG2U) Year 10 and 11 Evening. Facilitated by Collyer’s Deputy Principal Steve Martell, the packed audience posed questions to a panel of experts from industry, during a lively event in Collyer’s Duckering Hall. The session was planned by Employability Programme Co-ordinator, Lucy Hargreaves, with help from Hannah Roberts. Collyer’s students Nishat Zaman and Tom Williams, who study Employability alongside their academic subjects, also assisted with the management of the event on the night, to gain valuable experience in this field of work. Experts on the panel quizzed by a packed Duckering Hall audience were: former Collyer’s student and now Assurity Consulting’s

Callum Byrne, Grant Thornton’s Ali Hainsworth, who also studied at Collyer’s; Nestle’s Haleema Baker-Mir, Hazel Holland (AON Hewitt); Ex-Collyer’s students James Seddon-Smith (Red River/ Chichester University) and Chris Tod (South Lodge Hotel); Gatwick Airport’s Hannah Wickman, Michael Crane (Thales); Ben Powell (National Citizen Service), Jamie Hickman (Horsham District Council) and Professor Dave Cooper from Chichester University. Each answered questions on areas including A-level and BTEC courses at Collyer’s, apprenticeships, alternative routes, sponsored exams, degree apprenticeships, sponsored degrees and ‘employability’ skills. Steve Martell, who teaches the ground-breaking Employability course at the college, was delighted: “Massive thanks to our knowledgeable and inspiring

speakers, and to Lucy Hargreaves and Hannah Roberts for event planning the session so brilliantly. Big thanks also go to students Nishat and Tom. Tom Allen at The Capitol Following a total sell-out and very highly acclaimed run at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, where he was rated as one of the best reviewed shows there (British Comedy Guide), as well as a sell-out UK tour in the Spring and Autumn 2017, Tom Allen continues touring the UK with his first debut tour show Absolutely and will reach Horsham’s Capitol Theatre in May. Soaked in Tom’s signature waspish snobbery and selfaggrandising wit, Absolutely addresses the elephant in the room, that Tom is still living at home with his parents (because he can’t afford not to) in Bromley, Kent – heart of leave voters and Theresa May’s Brexit Britain. He’s always at home in Alan Bennett and Mike Leigh territory, as he shares his up close and personal experiences of suburbia, especially since the Referendum. Tom’s unique style of sharp, acerbic wit and camp, riotous storytelling has seen him perform all over the UK, Europe, Canada, America, Australia and New Zealand. The last year has been incredibly busy, seeing him star

in BBC1’s Wedding Day Winners, BBC2’s Mock The Week, Live At The Apollo, Extra Slice, Strictly – It Takes Two, ITV’s ‘Royal Variety Performance’, Channel 4’s 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Comedy Central Roast Battle, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Radio 4’s Loose Ends and Just a Minute. As an actor, he has starred in Radio 4’s Sony Award winning Bleak Expectations, Comedy Central’s Threesome, BBC’s Sensitive Skin with Joanna Lumley and Fear of Fanny with Mark Gatiss and Julia Davis. Film includes Colour Me

Kubrick with John Malkovich, Starter for Ten with James McEvoy and the Stephen Frears film, Tamara Drewe. Performance: Wed 23 May 8:00 PM, Capitol Theatre. Tickets: £15, available from The Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220 or online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com

Fri-YAY at Drusillas Park! Staff Take Full Advantage of International Fun at Work Every day there is a national or international event of some kind, be it ‘Talk like a Pirate Day’, ‘Love Your Pet Day’, or even ‘Peanut Brittle Day’... You name it, there’s an event for it. Mostly they are annoying, but every now and then a real corker of a day pops up, and last Friday (26 January) staff at Drusillas Park decided to throw down their tools and celebrate ‘International Fun at Work Day’. Before Drusillas opened their gates to the public that morning, a number of staff members decided to take full advantage of ‘International Fun at Work Day’. From zoo keepers to catering staff, to estate staff and more,

everyone stopped what they were doing and joined together for a little fun of their own. Climbing aboard Drusillas’ new Go Safari! rides, staff took it in turns to whizz around on the Flying Cheetahs and the Hippopotobus, shouting and laughing as they went. The sun was beaming brightly and needless to say, there were smiles all round. Director, Cassie Poland, said: “Sometimes it’s fun to just be spontaneous and have a bit of a laugh. We just thought, well… why not? We weren’t open yet, and everyone was ready for the day, so we flung a little caution to the wind and had a really good giggle. After all, how could we not

encourage fun on International Fun at Work Day?” Why not come and experience the fun for yourself this February Half Term? Not only can you explore Drusillas’ huge adventure play areas, but you can also take a turn on their large number of children’s rides! Plus there’s all the usual animal magic, and a debut appearance from PAW Patrol’s Skye and Rubble on Wednesday 14 February. You’d be barking mad to miss out! Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open from 10.00am daily. For more information, please telephone 01323 874100 or visit the website at www.drusillas.co.uk

Millais at National Youth Theatre Festival excitement, impatience and uncertainty, each with their own secret worries and desires for the future. This play is where you are taken on a roller coaster of a journey exploring or remembering what it is to be a teenager on the cusp of becoming an adult. The play centres around the fact that ‘The future is full of amazing and exciting possibilities if you are a young adult growing up today’. Volunteering Opportunities Building Heroes based in Pulborough is a charity which retrains military veterans for a career in the building trades. They rely on fundraising activities to fulfil their vital role in helping ex-service personnel into employment and need enthusiastic, friendly and reliable people to support and increase their activities and to raise the profile of the charity in the local area. If you can help organise fundraising events (e.g. sponsored walk, swim, bake sale, coffee mornings, etc, liase with community groups who may hold fundraising events for them, make phone calls to potential supporters, offer support at existing events (e.g. handing out flyers, providing information, serving drinks) or various other support tasks they would love to hear from you. Are you passionate about your community and want to make a difference? Emerging Futures train individuals to work as part of a coaching team to support their local community. Family recovery coaches help individuals in a family develop their own wellbeing and support system and to make valued life choices. And recovery coaches support individuals to move in to the community from structured treatment, detox, residential rehabilitation and prison. Pulborough and District Community Care Association needs a Wednesday club volunteer to help with activities at its social club for older people, for example short mat bowls, games, bingo, and the occasional outing - all accompanied by tea and cake. The association also needs a telephonist to work from home to take appointments for its Community Transport Service. Carers Support West Sussex needs support group co-facilitators to help provide a confidential space for carers to meet, offload and gain information. They also need telephone support volunteers to help carers share emotions and reduce stress and isolation by providing active listening. And the charity seeks young adult carer engagement volunteers to meet and communicate regularly with young adult carers to support them. If you want to know more about any of the opportunities above or are thinking of volunteering and want to know what’s out there, just log on to www.hamsva.org.uk/opportunities and explore the many ways in which you can get involved in your community. Can you help beat hunger by offering a couple of hours at your local Tesco store on Nov 30 or December 1 or 2? Volunteers are needed to help collect donation at the UK’s largest food drive this Christmas. The collections take place at Tesco stores UK-wide when volunteers are asked to help collect food donations from customers for a few hours in their local store and hand out the FareShare shopping list. In just three hours you could collect enough food to make 600 meals and change someone’s Christmas. Details are available at www.fareshare.org.uk/food-collection where you can also sign up for a shift.

Horsham cement second spot with another fine win through the second half, Susie Clapp converted a short corner to put the result beyond doubt. Susie subsequently missed a penalty flick, causing plenty of banter from her team mates, but it mattered not, Ladies’ Captain Charlotte (CJ) White telling the District Post: “This was a great team performance, we all worked well together and dominated throughout the game. The blustery, wet conditions were not good – but we’ve had worse! This was an excellent win for us and puts us in a great position – second in the table, three points shy of Surbiton (who cannot go up) and two ahead of Basingstoke.” The Ladies’ Coach, Chris Bowen, who has played an integral role in bringing about the renaissance of the team, told us: “This was a great game – the girls showed discipline and maturity riding bouts of sustained pressure from Teddington. The development and attitude the team is showing – both individually and collectively – has been incredible. Each member of the squad works hard at training and this is reflected in our exciting and attacking style

Saturday January 27 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Teddington Ladies 0 2 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Teddington are one of the highest scoring teams in the league but Horsham have the strongest defence and notched up

another impressive clean sheet win, the eighth time they have done so in 15 games this season – and the sixth occasion in the last seven games that they have prevented the opposition from scoring. At Christ’s Hospital in October Teddington inflicted Horsham’s only defeat of the season, so revenge was sweet. The first half was goal-less, but Tiff Male put Horsham ahead in the 50th minute before, mid way

This was a great team performance, we all worked well together and dominated throughout the game of play. Although the score was 2-0 we created many chances with some calculated patterns and connections. We now re-set and prepare for the next match (on Saturday against 7th placed Wimbledon at Christ’s Hospital, 1.30pm) – we’ll keep pushing each other to succeed!”

Horsham deprived despite winning second half Saturday January 27 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Old Cranleighans 4 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporte Although Horsham lost this game by a three goal margin, anyone just watching the second half would have questioned why Horsham are bottom of the table and Old Cranleighans are second. Horsham won the second half 1-0, showing, as they have done in patches throughout the season, that with a consistent performance lasting the entire duration of a game, they are capable of better things. OCs are a well-drilled side, adapting better to their familiar dead home pitch (merci-

fully scheduled for re-laying) and Horsham conceded a goal in the opening minute. Then, after a barrage from the hosts met with poor marking, Horsham were 4-0 down at half time – mirroring the scoreline when OCs visited Horsham in October. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “At the break Coach Andrew Isaacs told the team to play with attitude as if the result was of no consequence – ‘just enjoy yourselves and play festival hockey!’ and it was as if somebody had flicked a switch. Suddenly we were comfortably on top, bossing the second half on merit, in a much more aggressive and upbeat fashion, regularly finding a way into the opposition D. And, sure enough, we scored – when Barney Knights-Johnson

maintained his habit of getting a goal every week with another of his reverse stick cannons.” On Saturday Horsham return home to take on 7th placed Winchester (noon push back). Meanwhile, Al Campbell added: “Andy Isaacs’ heroics in goal have saved us from further punishment, but realistically we need at least three wins from our remaining eight games. Henley are struggling in penultimate spot, two points ahead of us and if they falter and we can maintain the second half performance against Old Cranleighans for the full 70 minutes then miracles might just happen and we’ll stay up.” Oxford Hawks top the table with 37 points, six ahead of Old Cranleighans.

Cricket laws revised – with option to send off players Sport Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Sports Club in Cricketfield Road has hosted a presentation by John Betts and Trevor Drake of the Association of Cricket Officials, at which changes to the laws of the game were outlined and explained. The reasons for the changes are to make the laws gender neutral, to renumber the laws (of which there are still 42) as part of a general tidying up process and, especially, to set out clear guidelines to enable umpires to deal with disciplinary matters – including the new provision to send off players. To formalise the new laws the MCC consulted widely and convened a world committee, which included international players. Umpires are now required to keep games going as long as possible and, in the spirit of leadership, friendship and teamwork, expected to get together with the captains before the start of play to run through the playing conditions. If one umpire considers conditions unfit then play will be suspended until both umpires agree that it is appropriate for the game to continue – what constitutes unreasonable conditions has been clarified. Umpires can now revoke decisions and equipment specifications have been changed, for example regarding the restriction of bat sizes, the tethering of bails to the stumps and the positioning of sightscreens outside the field of play. More jurisdiction has been given to umpires – including the management of players leaving and rejoining the field, dealing with ball tampering, dangerous bowling, deliberate distraction and the approval of ball drying cloths. There are other minor changes, including as to what constitutes a no ball, the prevention of non strikers taking advantage by backing up too far, and there are now only 9 methods of dismissal – handling the ball now coming under the umbrella of “obstruction”. But, following

concerns about the deterioration in on field behaviour, the biggest alteration in the laws relates to the beefing up of the disciplinary code, which, in extreme circumstances could, for the first time, result in immediate removal of an offending player for the duration of the match, and even to the award of the game to the opposition if a sanctioned player refuses to leave the field. The new concept is designed to improve discipline and enjoyment and there are four escalating levels of offence (and sanctions) – Level 1 includes mistreatment of the ground and equipment, dissent with an umpire’s decision and appealing excessively and aggressively. Level 2 concerns serious dissent, inappropriate physical contact with another player and throwing the ball at a player or umpire, whereas Level 3 relates to intimidation and threatening behaviour. Level 4 concerns physical contact and there are clear guidelines setting out how offences at each level should be acted upon – ranging from warnings, the application of penalty runs (involving a new umpire’s signal), suspension of a player for a specified period or elimination of a player from the remainder of the game. The onus is on the umpires to consult with each other and the captains and to record all incidents accurately at the time that they occur, the object being to deal with infringements consistently, exercising good will and common sense. It might be particularly challenging to administer the changes in the lower leagues where umpires are sometimes players temporarily uninvolved in the match and the presenters emphasised that league regulations – which may differ from league to league - also apply. Laws of cricket are regularly updated as part of an ongoing process to improve the enjoyment and conduct of the game and the application and outcomes of the disciplinary procedures will be carefully monitored.

Hornets’ happy win moves them up the table

Saturday January 27 – Bostik Football League South Division Sittingbourne 1 3 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Coming into this game Horsham were 13th, one place behind Sittingbourne and it was a mid table clash with an edge, Sittingbourne having beaten Horsham 5-1 at Lancing in September. So, the Hornets, and their visiting fans, who shared the coach from Horsham with the players, were delighted to pull off an impressive win – moving the Hornets up to 11th, courtesy of their first ever triumph at Sittingbourne’s Woodstock Park. After years of barren forays into Kent it has suddenly become a

happy hunting ground for the Hornets, and, with seven away wins this season, travelling is proving more fruitful than playing at the Hornets’ temporary Culver Road, Lancing home. The game started in slanting, heavy rain with Sittingbourne – the Brickies - mounting attacks, but Steve Metcalfe and Lewis Hyde were instrumental at keeping them at bay. Conditions steadily worsened creating ball control and balance problems, but Tony Nwachukwu latched onto Metcalf’s cross to put Horsham ahead in the 11th minute. Nwachukwu’s speed continued to worry the hosts before a corner produced a Hyde header only for it to be cleared off the line. Action then switched to the opposite end but Josh Pelling swooped to deny

Kane Rowland before Chris Webber scorched the Hornets’ bar. Despite further Sittingbourne pressure, Horsham soon doubled their lead, Toby House scoring for the 15th time this season when he lobbed keeper Brooks. Galvernised into action, the Brickies promptly reduced the deficit, Tom Loynes beating Pelling’s dive, and Sittingbourne might have ended the half with honours even but David Smith was off target. On the resumption both keepers were called upon to prevent further damage ahead of Darren Boswell causing Brooks to punch his cross away. Chances continued to come and go at either end until Sittingbourne had the benefit of a disputed free kick, which fortunately came to nothing after cannoning into the Horsham wall. More controversy followed when Hornets’ substitute Alfie Rogers was floored in the area, but instead of the award of an anticipated penalty, Rogers was booked for diving. As the clock ran down Sittingbourne concentrated on attack, winning unfulfilled corners – Rowland forgoing a golden opportunity when his header went over. With Sittingbourne at risk of a breakaway goal, Dean Bown’s shot was wayward, but the Hornets were not yet done, Bown making amends by supplying loanee George Landais who got the ball into the net well into extra time, just before the final whistle, leaving rapturous Horsham supporters celebrating the memorable 3-1 win.

Horsham’s Cup Quarter Final postponed again Tuesday January 30 – Sussex Senior Cup Quarter Final Pagham v Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter On Tuesday evening Horsham’s Sussex Senior Cup Quarter Final against Pagham was postponed for the second time in a fortnight. The tie was originally due to be played on January 16th but was called off following a serious car accident involving three Horsham players leaving London en route to Pagham’s Nyetimber Lane ground. On that evening another of the players’ vehicles had broken down, resulting in Horsham having just six of the team at the ground and ready to play, leaving the match referee

little choice than to opt for a postponement. This Tuesday the postponement was due to the waterlogged state of the pitch, which, last week, when Pagham – the Lions - beat Newhaven to get through to the final of the RUR Cup – was described as “more resembling a gluepot than a patch of grass”. Pagham are currently sixth in the Southern Combination League, the tier below Horsham, and details of the rearranged Sussex Cup Quarter Final are awaited. Meanwhile, this Saturday Horsham revert to league action, returning to the all weather pitch at Lancing to welcome fourth in the table Greenwich Borough, whom the Hornets beat 2-0 in south east London two months ago.

YMCA win again and remain a strong second Saturday January 27 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Eastbourne Town 0 2 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was an upper table tussle, YM successfully completing a double against Eastbourne Town, having beaten them 1-0 at Gorings Mead in October, in what YM Manager Peter Buckland described as ‘a cracking, really tough game’. Although the blustery mid winter conditions mitigated against accuracy, both sides played attractive passing football despite the elements. The teams came into the game in good form, suggesting a close contest, so there was no room for complacency and, initially, play focussed in the middle of the park with few clear cut chances, forays by Luke Donaldson bearing no fruit, the first half ending goal-less.On the re-start the weather deteriorated even further but the standard of play remained consistently high with neither side able to secure an advantage – until, in

the 75th minute, Phil Johnson converted a corner amid a goal mouth scramble to put YM in front. Then, shortly afterwards, YM doubled their lead when Dean Carden unleashed a long range strike, which the Eastbourne keeper could only deflect into his net. YM then successfully closed the game down to take all three points, especially valuable when news came through that leaders Haywards Heath had gone down 4-1 at home to Three Bridges. Peter Buckland’s assessment of Eastbourne Town is: “They are a very well organised side and they don’t hold back. They come at you from the first minute to the last.” Luke Gedling was YM Man of the Match – “for his hard work and presence all over the pitch on a day when everyone played their part,” and, post match, YM Coach Ben Godfrey said: “We’re loving our great run (YM have lost just once in their last 15 games). There’s a great team spirit and the hard work is paying off. There is still a long way to go, but we’ve played ourselves into the title race.” This Saturday YM return to Gorings Mead against Arundel from the lower reaches of the table. At the end

of September at their ground, Arundel surprisingly beat YM 3-1. Then, on Tuesday (February 6th), YM entertain near neighbours Broadbridge Heath – placed 14th after Saturday - in the game that was postponed on December 27th. Meanwhile, Haywards Heath remain top with 50 points, with YM second on 48 – followed by, all with a game in hand, Chichester City, Eastbourne Town and Three Bridges with 44 points apiece.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

They are a very well organised side and they don’t hold back. Peter Buckland

Battling Horsham worry relentless Dartfordians Saturday January 27 – London 2 South East Dartfordians 26 8 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporte Leaders Dartfordians march on remorselessly – played 15, won 15 – but they were given a proper game by Horsham, as happened at Coolhurst earlier in the season, when the Green and Whites ran them mighty close, losing 10-13 at the last knocking. In Kent the game started with Darts’ challenging the Horsham defence, but, although Horsham gained ground from set pieces, errors led to stoppages, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker commenting: “Darts are a well-drilled team and gifting them possession whilst trying to build pressure is not a recipe for success.” But, it was Horsham who scored first with straightforward kick. Dartfordians, though, soon went 7-3 up with a converted try. Horsham were winning lineouts and neutralising the Darts’ usually dominant scrums, leading to determined encounters until the hosts broke through for an unconverted

try. Undeterred, Horsham pushed the Darts back for Johnny Goward to get over the line, and, although the kick went astray Horsham had clawed back the deficit to 12-8 and were continuing to trouble the league table toppers. However, a dropped ball let the Darts back in with a converted try to lead 19-8 at the break. Each side began the second half with renewed commitment, both defences keeping their opposition at bay with chances going begging at either end, before, in the 72nd minute, following excellent build up, Dartfordians put the game beyond Horsham’s reach with a maximised bonus point try. But, considering the pressure exerted on the Darts throughout the match, the scoreline somewhat flattered the Kent side, who again demonstrated an unerring ability to capitalise on any mistakes, making opponents pay accordingly. Nick Stocker summed up by praising his young

side saying: “We had seven players aged 21 or under in our team today – virtually half the side – and another four under 25, which bodes incredibly well for the future. It was a very tough ask to pit them against rampant Dartfordians and debutant Vince Everitt was our standout player, securing four turnovers at the breakdown and being a menace to Dartfordians in multi-phase play.” On Saturday, Horsham now fourth, welcome third-placed Charlton Park, looking to avenge the defeat they suffered at the hands of the visitors in Kent in October.

Boro undone by Charlton’s overwhelming final onslaught Saturday January 27 – London 2 South East Pulborough 0 44 Charlton Park Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporte Against high flying Charlton Park and in scything rain and the teeth of a ferocious tempest Pulborough did well to get to the break just 10 points adrift, Boro’s forwards and tactical kicking having subdued the visitors. Charlton Park had taken an early lead after – despite the conditions - some sure handling had enabled Ed Mason to crash down onto a low through kick. With the weather deteriorating even further, Boro negated all Charlton’s subsequent attacks, but Connor McDonald kicked a wind-assisted penalty, in addition to his earlier conversion. Boro then pushed Charlton back and both sides were relieved to get to the shelter of the clubhouse at the end of the competitive first half. After the break, Boro mounted a strong drive from a lineout, but Charlton just managed to keep them out. Against the gale

and lashing wind, frustrating kicking options, Charlton found life difficult for the next 20 minutes, until a dropped ball enabled them to notch up another try. Suddenly, a scoring valve opened – two more tries following in quick succession and then three more ahead of a final try in injury time. Conversion was virtually impossible, but the visitors did somehow manage to maximise one of their tries to run out 0-44 winners by virtue of their virulent last quarter of the game. After praising Pulborough’s hospitality, Charlton Park paid tribute to the players of both teams for beating the atrocious weather. Charlton Park move up to third, while Pulborough stay in the penultimale berth with 15 points, behind Heathfield & Waldron (29). On Saturday, in dire need of a win in an attempt to stave off relegation, Boro travel to fifth-placed Haywards Heath, whom they beat 27-19 at home in October. Earlier in the season the two sides were due to meet in the Sussex Cup, but, when that game was postponed it was decided that Saturday’s encounter will be regarded as a dual league and cup match.
