Top marks for Horsham District food providers in 2018 Sussex Food and Drink Awards

Celebrations were in full flow last week as the Sussex Food & Drink Awards revealed the county’s top food and drink producers for 2018, all hailed as local heroes as they received their winning trophies at the Amex Community Stadium in Brighton.

Hosted by Danny Pike of BBC Sussex and actress Julie Graham, representing the charity Chestnut Tree House, the glittering 12th awards ceremony saw 400 leaders in the food, drink and farming industry gather together for what is dubbed as ‘the Sussex foodie event of the year’, celebrating the cream of Sussex food and drink producers.

Guests were treated to a wonderful ‘Sussex bubbly and ale reception’, sponsored by NFU Mutual Pulborough, with Harveys Ale, Carr Taylor sparkling wine, Wobblegate apple juice and Brighton Gin accompanied by delicious canapés from The Naked Food Company. This was followed by a stunning seven-course banquet created by stadium caterers Sodexo Prestige, using the very best local and seasonal ingredients supplied by Lighthouse Bak-

ery, Real Patisserie, Bookham & Harrison, Southview Farm Dairy, Hoads Farm, Veasey & Sons Fishmongers, Plumpton College, R P Meats (Wholesale), T G Fruits, The Cheese Man, Deerview Fine Foods, Just Brownies, The Raw Chocolate Company, South Downs Water Co Ltd and Edgcumbes Coffee Roasters and Tea Blenders.

Overall, Horsham District was well represented with 11 businesses voted as Grand Finalists – a third of all the companies celebrating on the night.

Horsham District Council provides business support in the food and drink sector through its annual food and drink festival and Big Nibble food celebration, and more recently the Council has launched its Horsham District Foodies brand to give extra weight to its locally based food businesses.

The Sussex Street Food of the Year Award was sponsored by Horsham District Foodies and Food Rocks this year, which was won by Garlic Wood Farm in Steyning. The award was presented by Cllr Gordon Lindsay, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for the Local Economy.

New 2018/19 Annual Parking Discs, for Horsham District Council car parking in its rural market towns, are available to buy from Monday (19 February).

The Annual Parking Disc Scheme was introduced in April last year and current discs will expire on 31 March 2018.

The Annual Parking Discs represent extremely good value for money at just £12 a year, enabling residents and visitors to park in any of the Council’s market town car parks.

To purchase an annual parking disc for 2018/19, please go online from 19 February and visit: www. horsham.gov.uk/annualparkingdisc .

Alternatively, the Council can take payment by phone via the Contact Centre on 01403 215100.

Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay said: “For many users, the annual parking disc system has proved very popular over the past year. It is a convenient and low cost way for residents and visitors to be able to park, at no extra cost, in all of the council owned Horsham District market town car parks.

“If you have not yet signed up for the scheme, I urge you to do so

before the 31 March deadline.”

The Annual Parking Disc can be used in Henfield, Steyning, Storrington, Pulborough, Billingshurst and Roffey. More details can be found at www.horsham.gov.uk/ annualparkingdisc.

The new 2018/19 parking disc will be valid from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019 with existing discs expiring on 31 March 2018.

Additional discs are available for users with more than one car per household at a cost of £6 a year, with up to a maximum of four discs per household.

If users prefer not to buy a disc, they can buy a Pay & Display ticket at 75p for the 1st hour and £1.50 for up to the maximum permitted stay within each car park. Cash, card and mobile phone payments are available at all machines.

Horsham properties being bought by overseas companies martin read

Amid increasing concerns over the number of UK residential properties thought to be regularly snapped up by overseas companies, a freedom of information search has revealed the extent of such transactions – around 97,000 properties in England and Wales.

And, while it was confirmed that, as previously thought, the purchases substantially relate to London properties, Land Registry data reveals that Horsham is not immune from overseas acquisitions with upwards of 20 properties in the town included – spread around the centre and nearby streets. Two thirds of the total number of properties owned by overseas companies have been purchased through British controlled tax havens such as the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man, the BVI - with a population considerably less than Horsham’s – featuring strongly.

Hong Kong, Panama and Ireland also provide headquarters for foreign owners of UK properties.

Although Britain is not the only country that attracts overseas buyers of residential properties – and businesses - the UK government is understandably concerned, because of tax avoidance issues, including inheritance tax, and possibly money laundering, too. And, with action being planned to counteract worldwide condemnation of tax avoidance by global conglomerates, it is proposed that purchases of UK

properties will in future be more tightly interrogated to establish the source of the funds and how they 1 were obtained. Up to 2013 information recorded regarding overseas registered sales did not include the purchase price.

A BVI spokesperson sought to justify their involvement by saying that the territory was experienced in dealing with overseas companies, had the financial infrastructure to do so, and that some purchases are handled there to ensure privacy rather than for tax avoidance purposes. It is also contended by the BVI that it is appropriate for them to facilitate purchases being completed by groups of investors from more than one country and that information on transactions have been provided to the relevant authorities.

Some 44% of overseas owned properties are in London, including prime locations, notably New Scotland Yard, the former HQ of the Metropolitan Police – pur-

chased by an Abu Dhabi Group from Mayor of London’s office – and the leasehold of Admiralty Arch, facing both down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace and on to Trafalgar Square. More than 6,000 properties – a considerable number known to be empty - owned by foreign companies are in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea, where the Grenfell Tower tragedy occurred with the survivors urgently seeking accommodation. There has long been disquiet that purchasing prestigious properties and leaving them unoccupied reduces the supply with the effect of pushing up prices. And, while Horsham might not have huge numbers of properties bought by overseas buyers, the town nevertheless appears to have been targeted for such purposes and the issue of homelessness and the difficulty of getting onto the housing ladder are problems increasingly affecting the Horsham district, not helped by wealthy overseas buyers bolstering prices.

Schools in West Sussex offer more than just opportunities to teach A school recruitment fair, to take place in Crawley this month, is offering an opportunity for people, seeking a new challenge, the chance to discover more about the wide variety of employed roles available in schools and education, in addition to opportunities to train to teach.

The fair, hosted by West Sussex County Council, follows one that took place at Fontwell Park Racecourse on 3 February.

As well as teaching posts, roles in schools include, teaching assistant, learning mentor, bursar, apprentice, premises manager, technician, governing body clerk and governor.

Schools, teacher training organisations, apprenticeship providers and other education service teams will be on hand to answer questions and provide additional information on, not only entry into the wide range of education roles avail-

able in schools, but to explain the possibilities of developing careers in education for life.

Collyer’s welcomed the University of Chichester’s 3Fall Dance Company, who ran workshops and gave wonderful performances at the Ofsted Outstanding sixth form college.

Dance teacher Hayley Ovens, who helped co-ordinate the action packed day, explained: “The busy event comprised a challenging and energetic workshop for Collyer’s A-level Dance students, delivered by talented third year students from the University of Chichester.

“The work really tested our students, making them work outside their comfort zone to help stretch their ability to new levels of excellence. Our dancers thoroughly enjoyed the experience!”

In addition to the workshop activities, Collyer’s Duckering Hall was packed as the A-level Dance students, and visiting pupils from Ofsted Outstanding Millais School in Horsham, were treated to 6 technically brilliant student pieces.

the day, the rest of 3Fall Dance Company arrived for several stunning performances of professional quality dance pieces and student works.

“It was a pleasure to welcome our next generation of Dance students from Millais School to see this; to describe the work on show as fantastic would be an understatement!”

Head of Dance, Emma Gogan, said: “The whole day provided a great opportunity for the students to experience dance study at a higher level and look at possible progression routes in Dance.

Artists and photographers have always strived to capture the spirit of their subjects, whether they are animals, humans or landscapes. The Fire & Rescue Service in West Sussex is delighted to welcome its 12 newest wholetime firefighter recruits; the second intake of trainees to have been successful in a competitive recruitment process that ran last year.

The next 14-weeks will see the recruits embark on an intensive recruitment training course, conducted in-house at Horley Fire Station.

During the course, the group of trainees will receive a combination of practical and theoretical training to equip them with all of the skills and knowledge they need to ensure that they are able to serve and protect the communities of West Sussex. Elements of the training will include: water rescues, working at height, breathing apparatus training and community fire safety.

How to get into Politics and why it matters

Jeremy Quin MP visited Christ’s Hospital on 2 February to talk to senior pupils about a career in public service, inspiring them to consider how they can best serve society in the future, and the role they might have.

Mr Quin spoke about routes in to politics. He said that MPs of all parties in his experience came in to politics with the best of intentions and that it was incredibly important that people of all backgrounds were preferred to come forward. He also emphasised that there are many ways students could get involved outside of elected politics and have a positive impact; in particular through the UK civil service, which provides impartial advice and is the best in the world, through political campaigns and charity work and also through local

Year 13 pupil, Christian Bryan, said: “Intriguing, broad-ranging and energetic, Mr Quin summarised his route into parliamentary politics. Before being elected MP for Horsham in 2015, he worked as a company adviser in the City and joined the Treasury, at their request, to help on policy in the financial crisis of 2008.”

“We asked lots of questions: from political social mobility to the relevance of the House of Lords and, naturally, Brexit. Mr Quin’s talk was invaluable. I say this especially in a world where the distractions of modern life more and more take away the significance of politics. Many thanks to Mr Quin for giving up time from his busy schedule to visit us and we hope to see him again at Christ’s Hospital.”

Jeremy Quin added: “It was a pleasure to meet the Christ Hospital students. I am always keen to encourage young people to engage in politics, whatever their party political affiliations, and it was good to engage in a debate with a wide range of views. I was also keen to make the point that, for those who want to take on a role in shaping our future, there are many important roles which happily do not require standing for election!”

Metricell launches inaugural charity partnership with the British Heart Foundation

Metricell Limited, specialist providers of software solutions for the mobile industry, has formally launched its new charity partnership with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) by putting its entire staff through Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training.

The BHF was chosen by the company as their official charity partner and aims to raise more than £10,000 for the charity over the two year duration of the partnership, which commenced on 1 January 2018.

Over the course of two weeks, Metricell staff were trained in groups of eight, using the BHFs Call Push Rescue training kits to learn the practical skill of CPR, to help everyone from software developers to sales people learn these potentially lifesaving skills.

Tracy Hines, Director of Finance and HR at Metricell, said: “Having the skills and confidence to perform CPR is a great life skill to have and can truly make a tremendous difference to someone in a life or death situation.”

The money raised will help fund

vital lifesaving research and enable the charity to donate CPR training kits, like those used by Metricell, to local secondary schools across the South East. All 45 members of staff currently employed by Metricell completed the training in January as part of the partnership launch activities and have also donated unwanted items to the BHF shops, raising over £100 already, and many members of staff have signed up to take part in the BHFs famous London to Brighton bike ride in June.

Hannah Miller, BHF Fundraising Manager for Sussex, said: “Thousands of lives are being lost each year, because people lack the confidence and the skills to step in and save a life when someone collapses with a cardiac arrest. Knowing how to perform CPR, when you’re faced with this ultimate medical emergency, could literally mean the difference between life and death.

“By training their staff in Horsham how to perform CPR, Metricell is playing a crucial role in helping us create a Nation of Lifesavers and dramatically improving survival

rates from cardiac arrest. We are really excited to work with Metricell over the coming 2 years to help raise vital funds and help us create a nation of lifesavers, starting on our doorstep in Horsham.”

Steve Mockford, CEO at Metricell, said: “We are really looking forward to our partnership with the BHF over the coming two years. It is such an important cause and has affected many employees and their families. We hope that through our partnership with the BHF, we can really make a difference by raising awareness of heart disease and the importance of CPR training, in our local community and beyond, to save more lives.”

Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer, and every year in the UK more than 30,000 people suffer cardiac arrest away from a hospital setting and less than one in 10 survive.

“All the money raised will be used to fund the science that can help us win the fight against heart disease and stop devastating the lives of so many families.”

With so many fantastic events being created for the Year of Culture in 2019, the team behind the year- long celebration of culture are setting up a ‘cultural matchmaking service’ to link businesses with cultural partners.

Over 150 separate events are already being planned for the Year of Culture with more anticipated.

Each event offers a unique oppor-

tunity for a business to align itself with a particular community or event and to raise its profile and build brand awareness.

Horsham District Council is a major sponsor of the Year of Culture and Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens has already declared itself a headline sponsor, but businesses are also being invited to become part of this opportunity by letting the Year of Culture team know if they’re interested in sponsoring one or more of the featured events. The team will then work with the business to match them to a cultural event.

There are three matchmaking levels, all of which offer different levels of promotion and benefits, details of which are on the website, with packages starting at £500.

These particular sponsorship packages will only be available to businesses contacting the team during the month of February 2018.

Horsham’s Scissors Hair Salon celebrates 40 year anniversary!

Business Martin Read - Sports Reporte Horsham’s Scissors salon provides a full range of much appreciated hairdressing services for all the family – and, unusually, it is a proper local facility, not part of a chain franchise.

The salon has stood the test of time, recently notching up its 40th anniversary, introducing and developing hairdressing progressions along the way.

Chris Scott opened the business in 1977, by which time he was already an experienced professional, telling the District Post: “My home was in Horsham and at 17 I secured an apprenticeship in a salon, where I was lucky to work with John, a London stylist, from whom I learned plenty by attending to his high class clientele. I then completed my training at a dedicated hairdressing academy in London’s Tottenham Court

SWOYO was the first of its kind, working with young musicians with additional support needs who play a range of musical instruments, including an accessible musical instrument called the Clarion that can be controlled by the movement of a musician’s eyes. Starring disabled and non-disabled young musicians, SWOYO has performed new music by composers including Liz Lane and Liam Taylor-West.

The Barbican and the Guildhall School are ideal partners for the National Open Youth Orchestra as they have over 30 years’ experience of bringing together world-class artistic partners with students and communities in ground-breaking new ways to create inspiring arts experiences for all. Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning supports people of all ages and backgrounds

to engage with the arts, access some of the world’s most in- demand artists and discover their creative voice. Last year, Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning reached almost 80,000 people.

Together, the Barbican and the Guildhall School create new routes for people to take part in the arts – from first experiences to higher education programmes and professional training – developing interests, skills, confidence and careers.

The Guildhall School is also the UK’s leading provider of specialist music training at the under-18 level, with nearly 2,500 students in Junior Guildhall and Centre for Young Musicians, which now has six branches across England.

The National Open Youth Orchestra (NOYO), the world’s first disabled-led national youth orchestra, is now searching for young musicians from London and the surrounding area for its launch in autumn 2018.

The orchestra is looking for disabled people aged 11 – 25 who have a passion for music and the potential to play an acoustic or electronic instrument as part of an ensemble.

They could be musicians already or be proficient at using assistive technology and have the determination to persevere musically. With its vision of inclusive orchestras for the 21st century, NOYO is also inviting applications from nondisabled young musicians.

The Barbican and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama will together be a training centre for the orchestra, helping to find potential musicians, host auditions and provide music tuition and rehearsal space. NOYO is also partnered with Bristol Music Trust and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, as well as local Music Education Hubs, schools and charities.

National Open Youth Orchestra Musical Director, Doug Bott, said: “The UK is leading the way with the world’s first disabled-led national youth orchestra. Between now and April, we want to hear from young disabled and non-disabled talents in London and the surrounding area. NOYO will provide them with unprecedented support to develop their musical skills and realise their potential as part of an ensemble.”

Earlier this month, top class jazz musicians came together with pupils and music teachers to create a phenomenal Jazz and Blues evening in the theatre at Christ’s Hospital.

Trumpet and drums player Peter Batchelar, Senior Grecian (Head Boy, Year 13), said: “For me, this Jazz and Blues night, being my last whilst at Christ’s Hospital, was particularly special. The usual jazz café atmosphere was warm and relaxed with a fantastic programme of music to match.

“A more intimate first half saw a range of small ensembles play some classic tunes such as the vocal duet of ‘Dream a Little Dream’ as performed by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ performed by the Dixie band and ‘Comes Love’ arranged

by Jules Jackson, the instrumental jazz teacher, and performed by the

senior jazz ensemble.

“The second half opened in style with ‘In the Mood’ by Glenn Miller and welcomed the Big Band to the stage. Other well-known tunes including ‘American Patrol’, ‘Lil Darlin’’ and ‘It don’t mean a thing’ followed.

“Throughout the evening, the audience were treated to some top class professional jazz musicians.

Welcoming musicians such as Nikki Iles (voted best pianist in the 2017 British Jazz Awards), Simon Bates and Pete Cater to the School to perform was one thing, but having the opportunity to perform with them on stage, particularly in the big band, was incredible. I would like to thank music teachers Steve Titchener, Rachel Taylor and Jules Jackson (former pupil) especially for all their hard work in making this fantastic evening possible.”

Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporte Horsham Cycling is enjoying record interest with nearly 270 members, following 57 joining last year, new Chair Barbara Lefebvre telling the District Post: “We’ve developed an increasing range of activities in our commitment to be ‘a club for everybody’ – with a burgeoning junior section and more women members than ever.

With a good mix of adult age groups, we’re focussing on skills training and cycle maintenance with the aim of making sure that we satisfy all members’ wishes.

Ride leader and group riding training is being planned and other opportunities for members are under active consideration.” While the year round Sunday morning rides from the Carfax are a core activity – with seven groups leaving at around 9am, catering for different speeds and distances – there is a substantial programme of

events to suit all requirements with an abundance of professionalism, experienced know how and sociability on offer.

There are weekends away – this year to Eastbourne, the Isle of Wight, and the ever-popular trip to Mouscron in Belgium, where rides and hospitality are enjoyed with their members, who have been invited to come over during the summer to ride with HC and attend their post ride lunch.

Shorter Saturday rides have been introduced, too, leaving from Horsham Park conservatory, and another new feature has been added to the portfolio – road racing, through affiliation with the Surrey Road Racing League with a summer season including two sponsored club rides at the Dunsfold Aerodrome. Other events include the social group’s Down Hill Challenge and the annual Hill Climb, while inter-club Time Trials and Reliability Trials are always very well supported.

A group of members also enjoy the Dunwich Dynamo, when

riders pedal through the night from east London out to Suffolk, where a well-earned breakfast on the beach awaits their arrival.

And, members are free to come up with their own activities – outgoing Chair John Chaplin arranges an annual programme of themed rides – rivers and castles have been visited and, this year John is planning trips to WW2 airfields to mark the centenary of the RAF, John saying: “We’ve had a lot of HC members supporting the Worthing Excelsior Club’s ‘Winter Warmer’ rides and we network with other clubs, such as Crawley Wheelers, to engage in hard-fought but friendly competition with them, revelling in the camaraderie. We’re now affiliated to the Surrey Road Racing League and organise and manage at least two races a year as part of that affiliation.” Barbara Lefebvre added: “An HC member completed the Tour de Force – covering the entire Tour de France route – three weeks before the tour - in the same number of days as the professionals and he gave us a fascinating presentation on his experience.”

There is something for every rider at Horsham Cycling, including off road outings – and a range of social activities, too, with pub gettogethers throughout the year and the Christmas dinner and awards evening. Breaking Records and Making Waves

Atlantis Swimming Club have started 2018 with some incredible performances from its members.

The end of January saw the Atlantis girls team top the table at the Sussex County relay Championships where the senior girls team of Zoe Cawsey, Lily Davies, Kate Windle and Eleanor Morris swam away with the gold medal and a new county record in the 4x100m medley relay.

Some of the youngest swimmers at the club displayed real determination and the team of Sophie Rodwell, Sofia Velasco, Katie Mcnish, and Alexa Spicer also won gold in the girl’s 10-11 year olds 4x50m medley relay. Amber Ranson, Anna Sayers, Tessene Arezki and Kiran Sandhu also added to the Atlantis gold medal account.

The relay event is traditionally a warm up to the Sussex County Championships that take part over three weekends in February. Long distance events kick off this period of competition. Some of Atlantis Swimming Clubs top male swimmers competed over a gruelling 1500m swim with 15 year old Oliver Etheridge winning gold in his age group and silver in the overall junior championships. Teammate Toby Van der Hut also walked away with gold and took the title of Senior County Champion. The girls long distance is raced over 800m and Zoe Cawsey added to her gold medal collection with another victory.

February 10th saw the start of the regular racing at K2 Crawley. The morning started in familiar fashion with Oliver Etheridge winning gold in the 200m freestyle and Amber

Ransom continuing her backstroke domination winning gold in her age group. Senior girl Eleanor Morris, now back with spiritual home Atlantis, left the entire field standing and romped away with the 200m backstroke title in a time of 2mins 20 seconds. Breaststroke wins came thick and fast for Atlantis with Millie Weeden and Lily Davis winning the 50m events, Lily securing the title of Senior Champion and Millie Junior Champion. Young hotshot Ollie Colombo showed some fantastic form winning 2 golds in the 50m backstroke and 100m fly, whilst Amelia Wright pitched in with a win in the 200m breaststroke. Emma Harrison showed real guts winning the 15year old 100m breaststroke and in turn walking away as Junior Champion in the event. After an earlier DQ the determined Amber Ranson turned up on the blocks for the 50m freestyle and she didn’t disappoint winning in a time of 28.93 seconds and a Junior Championship silver medal at only13 years old!

Eleanor Morris sealed the proceedings of the weekends competition comfortably winning the Senior 100m breaststroke and being crowned Sussex Champion in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke, a formidable achievement.

Head Coach Andy Lobley commented, “it was an exciting weekend of swimming with some fantastic head to head races and after breaking the ladies 400m medley county record in the relays only a week before, I am delighted that all of our swimmers gave their all and we are looking forward to the final weekend of action”.

Fortune abandons Horsham’s as their woes continue Saturday February 10 – South League – Premier – Division 1 London Wayfarers 4 1 Horsham Men Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporte When you’re down things conspire against you. In previous seasons when Horsham worked their way up through the leagues they had the rub of the green – not every game, but a fair crack of the whip, but this season nothing much has gone right.

They lulled themselves and supporters into a mistaken sense of security on the first Saturday of the season when they beat Indian Gymkhana 5-0 – since when, cup apart, they have not had another win. There have been occasions when they have had the lead, but something has always snatched victory away and last Saturday it

happened again. The insalubrious surroundings of Battersea and driving rain on a municipal pitch drew the comment from Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell: “This was never going to be ‘festival hockey’ – conditions were tricky, but by half time we’d created a series of chances but couldn’t find a way round the tallest goalkeeper in the league.” Horsham had let in a soft early goal but had started to take control and were still very much in the game at the break at just one down.

However a bizaare second half incident gifted an unworthy goal to London Wayfarers, leaving Horsham chasing the game. A long corner had been expected when Horsham keeper Andrew Isaacs diverted the ball into his own net, but a goal was eventually awarded, embarrassing the opposition officials and players, who were not celebrating because they

were convinced that the ball had been struck from outside of the D, invalidating the goal. But, the decision stood, allowing Wayfarers to go on the attack, from which they scored two breakaway goals.

Cranleigh schoolboy Sam Bugler was thrilled to score his first goal for Horsham’s senior team, but the game was up, Al Campbell telling the District Post: “Another disappointment for us, especially as Henley – fellow relegation candidates – sneaked a rare win.” There are no easy games in this league, making unfortunate umpiring decisions count double.

Horsham remain bottom with six points, four behind Henley and seven adrift from Milton Keynes.

With six games left, mathematically Horsham could stay up, but they are in dire need of goals and points. Tomorrow, Saturday, they play fourth-placed Bromley & Beckenham – at Christ’s Hospi-

tal, noon push back. In the final weeks of the season Horsham take on MK, then Oxford University (5th), London Edwardians

(2nd) and Spencer (9th), before hosting runaway leaders Oxford Hawks in the final league weekend.

Young sports stars triumph at Set4Success ceremony

Youth Sport Martin Read - Sports Reporte The Set4Success annual awards ceremony – the ninth - returned to South Lodge Hotel again to celebrate and mark the achievements of our outstanding young sports people.

The Set4Success charity supports talented sporting youth from Horsham District to achieve their potential and is part of the Rotary Club of Horsham, but managed by a separate team including representatives from Horsham District Council, Places for People Leisure, Horsham Schools, Active Sussex, Kreston Reeves, ATOM, Tactic Counsel, and some of our local sporting dignitaries.

Each year around 25 young

people receive a financial award to help with funding towards training, coaching, competing, travel, equipment and clothing for their favoured sport. Successful nominees also receive concessionary access to local training facilities, Set4Success working in partnership with SportsAid to maximise support for young sporting talent, coordinating with national talent funding.

The young recipients of the awards participate in a variety of different sports and the winners were: for Swimming – Amber Ransom, retaining the award won the previous year, for Football – Fynn Talley and Emily Orman, Basketball: Alexandra Baker, another previous winner, while Corlia Robertson, Marcus Rolfe, Ryan Elnaggiar, Zac Wake and Ellie Worrall took the

Judo awards, Harvey Claridge: Motor Cycle Racing (a new category) and Orla Brothers received the Althletics prize. Then, Harry Baker was honoured at the Athletics presentation and Caitlin MacGregor for Trampolining.

The enthusiastic winners thrive on the possibilities afforded through the S4S programme, taking inspiration from those who have achieved success in their specialised activity and revelling in the opportunities to compete in amazing places through the Set4Success partnership.

Horsham Rotary Club’s John Le Rossignol told the District Post: “Most winners are GB, National or County Champions in their chosen sports. Last year the charity received a donation from Neilcott Construction, builders of the new Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, and, as a result, S4S launched a new award – “The Neilcott Trophy” – to be presented annually to a past Set4Success winner who has demonstrated the highest achievement in their sport. to pass a pitch inspection but it was heavy going in slicing wind and rain. Horsham’s opening foray drew first blood with a corner after Tony Nwachukwu’s shot was turned away, but Curtis Gayler’s kick sailed harmlessly away on the wind, which also hampered Casuals’ keeper Danny Bracken, but George Landais was unable to take advantage. Casuals, though were soon in contention with a corner of their own, which was headed wide.

Joe Shelley was then called upon to negate a Casuals attack before the Hornets broke through on the rebound, but Landais’ shot from Josh Street’s supply narrowly avoided the goal. Horsham were having opportunities, yet it was Casuals who took the lead, when, in the 24th minute, in a rare incursion Gabriel

Odunaike centred for Jordan Clarke to fire into the top angle of the net impressively. The same two players promptly threatened to put the Casuals further ahead, but Ordunaike failed to convert Clarke’s pass. Street then harried the Casuals, but Bracken was up to the task.

A contentious goal followed, doubling Casuals’ lead when Odunaike put the ball in from close range amid strong Horsham protests for offside, but the goal stood. With Casuals now in the ascendance Ben Checklit put a threatening ball through, but it was sent away by Henry Watson on Horsham debut.

The first half ended with Shelley’s header hitting the upright with Bracken well out of position.

Restarting, Clarke fired over before Gayler got through the Casuals’ defence, only for his strike to go directly to Bracken. Further Horsham chances saw Shelley blaze over from a corner ahead of shots from Landais’ and Alfie Rogers being saved. Then, two Casuals attacks were thwarted by Pelling and Rogers and Toby House were prevented from reducing the deficit in the dying moments of the game.

On Saturday the Hornets, looking to avenge December’s defeat in Kent, return to Lancing to play Dartford based 10th in the table Phoenix Sports. Cray Wanderers head the table with 69 points, one more than Lewes - who have two games in hand – closely pursued by Corinthian Casuals and Carshalton Athletic. Horsham are 14th, while Shoreham are bottom, 16 points behind penultimate club Molesey.

Tomorrow night sees two British world champions come head to head in what should be an explosive semi final in the exciting world boxing super series.

Chris Eubank jr defending his IBO world title against WBA world champ George Groves, its a fight that ignites the passion in both casual and hardcore fans, safe to say, many pubs and even cinemas will be full with people cheering on their chosen fighter.

I caught up with Horsham boxer Ben Gumbrell, himself a 45 fight veteran and former belt holder to discuss his views on this forthcoming grudge match and anything else boxing wise that came up.

First things first, i wanted to know who he could see emerging victorious, “Eubank will win, he’s quicker in speed and agility, i would even say he has more power. He also takes shots well, he’s a lot harder to hit than Groves is.”

Groves got his hands on his world title at the fourth time of asking which has led to some wondering whether he has the longevity to keep pushing for glory should he loose on Saturday, Ben believes he only has a few options that would keep him at the top, “I watched George against Jamie Cox , it was a good stoppage but I wasnt overly impressed with the rounds leading up to it. For George to remain relevant, or at the top he will need to fight someone like Callum Smith or Gilberto Ramirez.

Eubank Jr took his lesser known IBO title against Renold Quinlan but its his defeat to Billy Joe Saunders that most people remember and most want to see him avenge, its been 3 years since they entered the ring together and the clamour for the fight shows no sign of subsiding, Ben thinks it will happen and says it could be down to money rather than potential glory that determines if it happens, “I’m sure Eubank would love a rematch with Billy joe, with it only being a points win he (saunders) knows

he cant really hurt Eubank so may not want to take the risk, but like anything in boxing if the money is right its more likely to happen, probably later in Saunders career though.”

Ben has referenced four British fighters during our conversation and I was wondering, as a fighter himself, who he enjoys watching, “I am a big fan of AJ (Anthony Joshua) and after being at Wembley, watching possibly the best live fight I’ve ever seen, against Wladimir Klitschko, I just have to rate him. I , like everyone else want to see AJ fight Deontay Wilder but I really cant see that happening anytime soon, so that leaves Tyson Fury as a potential opponent. Tyson isn’t ready yet after his time away from the ring but a solid year with a few wins could see it happen. It may match or even better the klitschko fight.”

For many boxers they have someone in the trade that acts as an inspiration, or someone they want to emulate. When we get talking about ring legends Ben is quick to relay who he looked up to the most, “Joe Calzaghe, I’ve met him a few times through the boxing circuit and after seeing him beat Eubank senior in 1997 I instantly became a fan. I followed his career to the end and seen him beat everyone. He beat all in his path with fast hands and flurries of punches, for years he was underrated until he beat the american Jeff Lacey. That was his best fight.”

So whilst talking about national and international boxing stars, i thought we should conclude with a nod to the local fight game, Ben won welterweight titles and captained the Horsham ABC from 2005 to 2013, who does he see coming through as a big name, “Floyd Moore, he is someone I fought in the amateurs and now he is making it professionally.

He’s now ranked in the top 20 and fights in Belfast on April 14th. Hes certainly one to watch.”

So before we part, I just wanted a final prediction for Saturday night, (Im a Eubank fan regardless but would like to tie Ben down to a method of victory)......”it’s a KO round 10 or 11”

So, while YM might have scored more – they had nine unfulfilled corners – they did well to come away with five goals, and another clean sheet for keeper Aaron Jeal, again benefiting YM’s goal difference. The Oval has not been a happy hunting ground for YM in recent seasons and although United now find themselves flirting with relegation, they made the early running with a corner and the lion’s share of possession, but they were off target on the bumpy pitch with variable bounce. YM worked their way into the game, earning two corners, in between which Dan Evans shot wide – until, in the 14th minute, Phil

Callum Jeal Johnson broke through and fired home to open the scoring. Playing in a red strip to combat United’s white, YM and the opposition were getting muddy – and United were getting dirtier, culminating in them being reduced to 10 men mid way through the half, the ref having no hesitation in showing a red card. Another YM corner came and went before United did penetrate the defence, but, in a one on one, their attempt was well adrift. YM Captain Ash Dugdale then ended up face down in the mud, and after receiving treatment for a strain, played on ahead of YM being awarded a penalty, nonchalantly slotted in

by Luke Gedling. Sam Schaaf then burst through, only to be judged offside, the first half ending with United squandering a close range free kick, which went harmlessly past the goal. Resuming, YM immediately went three up, courtesy of a United own goal.

Four YM corners followed in quick succession, Johnson was surging forward only to be floored without sanction, then Schaaf hit the bar.

Another YM goal looked certain and it came in the 71st minute when Schaaf was given space and, considering the state of the pitch and the elements, unleashed a surprisingly clean and unstop-

pable strike into the top right of the net, the atrocious conditions being described by Ash Dugdale as: “The worst of the season by a mile!” It was getting dark with rain sweeping down the ground causing fears that the game might not be allowed to finish – United were calling for it to be abandoned. But, it ran its course and with such a commanding lead Manager Peter Buckland had the luxury of bringing off Dugdale and Johnson and it was 16 year old substitute Callum Jeal who put the icing on the cake when he sure-footed home Dave Brown’s cross with 10 minutes remaining.

Dan Evans and Schaaf were unable to finalise opportunities and a YM appeal for a penalty went unheeded, but it mattered not - YM had long since bagged the three points for an overwhelming win. The final whistle came as a relief for all concerned, with one especially happy player – Callum Jeal who, after scoring hatfuls of goals for YM junior sides, was delighted to open his account with the first team. Soaked and muddy, but grinning from ear to ear Callum told the District Post: “That was fantastic, really great!” YM Manager Peter Buckland summed up with: “Another great win for us – we adapted to the conditions far better.”

YM return to action on Saturday week with a trip to the coast – against 17th in the table Worthing United, whom they beat 5-0 at Gorings Mead in August and 3-1 in the Peter Bentley Cup in September. YM are now six points clear of Haywards Heath at the top of the table, Heath having two games in hand – the clubs are due to meet in an away game in April. Meanwhile Littlehampton Town are bottom, below Hassocks.

Horsham Football Club appoint new Commercial Director Football Martin Read - Sports Reporte Paul Osborn has been appointed Commercial Director of Horsham Football Club, in succession to Andy Thompson.

After thanking Andy for his contribution, the club’s CEO John Lines told the District Post: “I’m really pleased, Paul has good business acumen and a proven track record and he’s already done a great job on our committee raising commercial income for the club. He took the lead role in co-ordinating the club’s highly successful Christmas draw, raising over £1,000 each for Horsham Football Club and Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. The board recognises that we have a real opportunity to significantly increase the club’s commercial profile and income, and Paul will head that up at board level.” And, Paul told us: “I’ve been a long term supporter of the club, and our new clubhouse will be a real asset.

We’ve got new residents and new businesses in the town and when top local football returns we’ll have an excellent facility for a range of activities including business meetings, so I feel very ambitious about what we could achieve.”

Recently retired Paul has run his own business and has worked successfully with public and private companies, helping them to improve their enterprises. The club has also benefitted from Paul’s hard work in securing match day and match ball sponsorship for each of Horsham’s fixtures at their temporary Culver Road,

Shoreham base. Paul added: “I’m delighted to be given this opportunity to support the club as we enter an exciting new phase in our long history.

Throughout my working life I’ve focussed on helping businesses of all sizes to improve their performance and as Commercial Director I plan to work with the many national and local companies and organisations, who I believe will want to be part of us becoming a genuine community club of which Horsham can be proud.
