Professional safeguarding expert, local resident Ben Jacobs has set up a Horsham Community Safety page on Facebook to help raise awareness aimed at tackling personal safety issues. Ben’s idea was reposted by The Horsham Facebook page and received a huge response proving a need for this kind of project. While the Horsham district is happily regarded as a low crime area compared with inner city locations, crime and potential dangers are nevertheless all around us and Ben’s idea is to use his considerable, successful experience to provide advice on how people can avoid needless exposure to harmful situations, telling the District Post: “My concern is that everyone is so busy and preoccupied today and although in many ways we are more streetwise than ever, we tend to be in a bit of a

On February 23, Police reported the arrest of a man in connection with two knife-point incidents that occured Horsham: At about 11.10am on Thursday 15 February, a man attempted to snatch a handbag from a woman in New Street, close to the parade of shops near Livingstone Road. The suspect threatened the 40-year-old victim with a knife, however she bravely fought him off and he fled the scene empty handed. At about 1am on Sunday 18 February, a 17-year-old boy was walking along Rushams Road when he was approached by a man at the junction with Victory Road. The suspect demanded the victim’s phone, which he handed over. Following this incident, the

victim was treated for two stab wounds – one to the back and to his arm. An 18-year-old man from Horsham, arrested on suspicion of robbery (New Street on 18 February) and attempted robbery (Rushams Road on 15 February), has been released under investigation as enquiries continue. However, police are still appealing for witnesses to either incident to come forward. Anyone with any information is asked to report it online or call 101 quoting serial 766 of 15/02 for the New Street incident, or serial 99 of 18/02 for the Rushams Road incident. Alternatively, you can visit the Crimestoppers website or contact the independent charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Last week, Collyer’s held a concert in aid of the Parkinson’s UK charity. Hosted by Mike Lavelle, the event was a huge success and comprised performances from Collyer’s Jazz Band and the Collyer’s Orchestra. Students, teachers, friends and family from the Collyer’s community supported the event. The evening also included an address from Mr Martin King, of the Parkinson’s Society, who gave the audience a moving insight into living with the condition. The multi-talented Mike Lavelle conducted both the Collyer’s Orchestra and Collyer’s Jazz Band. The audience were wowed with orchestral performances which included Bizet’s “Toreador Song”, Elgar’s “Nimrod” from the Enigma Variations, and Sibelius’ “Finland”. The Jazz Band treated everyone to some popular classics, including “Fly Me to the Moon”, “Come Rain or Come Shine”, and finished on a thumping “I Feel Good”! Collyer’s music teacher, Steve Brundish, helped co-ordinate the event. He said: “We are so lucky to have such talented young people at Collyer’s! It was a truly great evening. We are so glad that it was well attended and positively received by the audience. “We are proud to support the

Parkinson’s UK charity, and the amazing Mike Lavelle and the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We definitely plan to put on more shows like this in the future!” The Collyer’s Orchestra, who performed wonderfully, featured violins: Anja Elvin (leader), Lizzie Eves, Lydia Palmer, Cherry Lam and Anisha Wakefield; violas: Mrs Elvin; cello: Matthew Luk; flutes: Israel Harding, Catherine Overend and Felicity Zappulo; clarinets: Emma Brownless and James Reed; bass guitar: Jack Harding. The brilliant Collyer’s Jazz Band comprised: trumpet: Archie Russell-Weeks; alto saxophone: Matt Bland; tenor saxophone: James Reed; trombones: Lawrence Schofield and Matt Hutchinson; piano: Mike Lavelle; bass guitar: Angus Sheldon; and drums: Navid Kalani. Soloists Vila Zhang (piano), Matthew Luk (Cello), Issi Hall (vocals) and Lawrence Schofield (trombone) also received high praise on the night. Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley, was delighted: “I was immensely proud of the students’ performances and it was an honour for us to welcome Mr Martin King to Collyer’s. Massive thanks also to Mike Lavelle, Dan Page and Steve Brundish for helping to make this event possible.”

Variable weather increases number of potholes locally

Recent weather variations between mild and cold/freezing temperatures have led to an increased number of potholes on West Sussex roads. The county council and contractor Balfour Beatty are working hard to repair the worst of these as soon as possible. Bob Lanzer, Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “Unfortunately, roads are not permanent structures and deteriorate over time from constant use and the weight of vehicles using them.

“As the road surface gets older and is subject to the weather, including rainwater and the expansion and contraction caused by temperature change, more and more deterioration will occur, resulting in new potholes. “The recent wet weather and variations between mild and cold/freezing temperatures have resulted in more potholes being reported to the council. Please bear with our staff and contractors, who are working hard to get the worst of these repaired as soon as possible.”

Concerns about potholes can be reported online using our Love West Sussex app. Please go to: https://www.westsussex.gov. uk/roads-and-travel/report-aproblem-with-a-road-or-pavement/ Bob added: “The county council is responsible for maintaining around 2,500 miles of road. Staff cannot be everywhere at once and residents can really help West Sussex Highways be as efficient as possible by using this online reporting method.” The roads are inspected dependent on their hierarchy, with A and B classification ordinarily inspected on a monthly basis. Cclass and main distributor roads on a three or six-monthly basis and declassified roads are typically inspected annually. Repairing defects, such as potholes, is done on a priority basis, dependent on size and depth. More details can be found on our website at: https://www.westsussex. gov.uk/roads-and-travel/ maintaining-roads-verges-andpavements/road-and-roadside/ potholes/ While the county council is responsible for most roads in West Sussex, Highways England (formerly known as the Highways Agency) is responsible for, and maintains, the A27, A23 and M23.

Two charged for breakin at West Street Store

At about 2.44am on Thursday 22 February, police were alerted to a break-in at Wakefields Outfitters in West Street, Horsham. Three men wearing dark clothing were seen to leave the store with a mannequin in their possession. Officers attended and located two suspects in the area, who were subsequently arrested in connection with the incident. Several items of clothing worth approximately £3,500 were recovered, having been stolen from the front window displays of the shop, which had been smashed. Dominic Hawkins, 18, unemployed, of Livingstone Road, Horsham, appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Friday 23 February, charged with burglary. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a 12-month community

order. He was also ordered to pay a £85 victim surcharge. Ricky Ayres, 48, unemployed, of no fixed address, also appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Friday 23 February, charged with burglary. He pleaded not guilty and was released on conditional bail, pending a trial at Horsham Magistrates’ Court on 27 March. A third suspect remains outstanding. Anyone who saw what happened is asked to report it online at https://sussex.police.uk/appealresponse or call 101 quoting serial 89 of 22/02. Alternatively, you can visit the Crimestoppers www.crimestoppers-uk.org website or contact the independent charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Timely improvements for Horsham bus passengers New, real-time information displays have been installed at Horsham bus station, following comments from passengers. The county council had received reports that sun glare on one of the former displays made it difficult to read. The replacement is a larger, daylight-readable, summary screen, listing all upcoming departures. Five new, smaller displays (one at each departure bay) have also replaced old and redundant screens. The installations cost a total of £25,000 and were funded through developer contributions (section 106 funding).

Bob Lanzer, Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “We always listen to feedback from the public and were pleased that, in this instance, we were able to make improvements.” Operators use equipment that tracks the location of each bus, using the Global Positioning System (GPS). The location data is fed to West Sussex County Council’s Real Time Passenger Information system. The actual location of a bus is compared to where it is scheduled to be; the predicted time of arrival is calculated and this information is then shown on the displays.

Council calls on residents to switch and save now!

Councils in Sussex have joined forces to help households save money on their energy bills by getting them into the switching habit. Residents across Sussex can now buy competitively-priced gas and electricity through Your Energy Sussex, the council energy partnership led by West Sussex County Council. The aim is to encourage more people to switch and save money on their energy bills – as much as £300 per year on average. According to figures from Ofgem, only 25% of households compared their energy costs and switched supplier in the past year. That means more than 500,000 house-

holds in Sussex could be paying too much for their gas and electricity. Your Energy Sussex is a partnership between Sussex councils and Robin Hood Energy, the licensed energy company owned and operated by Nottingham City Council. Your Energy Sussex is different to most energy suppliers because: It is operated by local councils who want people here to pay less for their gas and electricity; It is run on a ‘not-for-profit’ basis where profits are used to help local people who are struggling to pay their energy bills; It aims to ensure that its gas and electricity prices are always competitive and works hard to keep customers on the cheapest Your

Energy Sussex tariff. Your Energy Sussex is also working with Robin Hood Energy to provide Sussex-produced green energy from West Sussex County Council solar panels directly to customers through the launch of a green energy tariff later this year. Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We want to help people across Sussex to get the best deal from the energy market by comparing costs regularly and switching suppliers to get the best deal. “Your Energy Sussex is different to other energy companies. It will give residents good customer service and a fair deal on their gas and electricity year after year while helping to support residents at risk of fuel poverty.” Nick Bennett, East Sussex County Council Lead Member for Transport and Environment, said: “We’re delighted to be working with our partners to support a local initiative that will not only help our residents to save money on their energy bills but will also support ways to tackle fuel poverty.” The local energy tariff is currently supported by 12 of the 15 local authorities in Sussex. Brighton & Hove City Council will make a decision on whether to support the tariff in March.

Unique documents held by West Sussex Record Office have been on loan to the National Trust’s Petworth House, for an exhibition on poet and artist William Blake, since mid-January. Open until March 25, the exhibition, William Blake in Sussex: Visions of Albion, also includes a rare book of poetry from the County Library Service. The Record Office documents describe an argument with a local soldier and details of his subsequent trial for sedition against the King, and acquittal, at Chichester in 1804. This is the first time that so many of Blake’s Sussex-related items have been displayed together, with other loans coming from the British Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Tate. Visit Horsham’s new authentic, delicious oriental restaurant

Business Martin Read - Reporter A new and exceptionally healthy lunchtime restaurant has opened in Horsham’s Carfax – and will shortly be serving dinners on a ‘just eat’ basis, too! The restaurant provides superb oriental food, combining traditional tastes from China, Thailand and Japan. May, one of the three partners in the new restaurant, has run the XCLUSIV bespoke Bridal and Prom Boutique in the building for a number of years and told the District Post: “I want to give people the opportunity to eat some delicious, healthy and nutritious food! Everything is freshly prepared on a daily basis using only the very finest natural gourmet ingredients and I promise that with this attractive and appetising food you can eat well without increasing your weight.” The menu specialises in low calorie meals that are high in nutrients and popular items include Burritos wraps with either chicken or beef fillings, Chow Mein, creamy and mild Coconut Chicken Curry, Beef with noodles and a variety of rice and vegetarian options such as Toufu. Gyoza is another gastronomic delight – crisp, golden brown pan fried Japanese dumplings filled with chicken, cabbage, leeks and eggs. Orders can be placed online or fulfilled while you wait at the restaurant – to eat there or take away. Drinks include jasmine green tea, Japanese matcha, traditional teas and a range of healthy soft drinks. May continues: “The restaurant has been very well received and we’re getting the same customers coming in every day. When some come in for lunch they buy more for a quick and tasty dinner when they get home. At the moment we’re open from 11am to 2.30pm on weekdays and from 11-5.30 on Saturdays, but we’ll soon be open for dinner, too.” There are already a number of restaurants and cafes in Horsham, so what is unique about the new restaurant? May sums up with: “For many years I

have been eating the lovely food that we are supplying - it is very important to provide authentic food with good service and we offer big portions and big value. Our food is very suitable for those on a slimming diet, and vegetarians too. The menu is very reasonably priced and at our central location in the heart of Horsham we are giving people something different. Whilst families can be treated to our healthy food all day long on Saturdays, and soon evenings, our lunch menu is especially designed to provide convenient and healthy hot business lunches to people working in the surrounding offices, something that we feel is a must in the town centre and the excellent feedback that we’re getting is most encouraging!” Now that the XCLUSIV boutique

has moved from the ground floor to the first floor above the restaurant customers can eat well and dress well, too! XCLUSIV has been in Horsham for over 15 years, providing striking and stylish tailor-made clothes for that special occasion, including, for ladies, bridal, and colourful ball and prom dresses made from high quality silks and other materials – either from XCLUSIV’s or customers’ designs. And, unusually, XCLUSIV also make bespoke ‘made-to-measure’ suits for both men and ladies with a full fitting service. www.3meals.co.uk and on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Instagram- 01403 252548 – 19 Carfax, Horsham RH12 1EB – XCLUSIV – www.xclusiv.co.uk – email – enquiries@xclusiv.co.uk

Chamber Philharmonic Europe Music for strings from across the centuries will provide a stimulating programme for their concert at The Hawth this March, beginning with the Baroque masters Bach, Vivaldi and Albinoni, while the gloriously lyrical serenades of Josef Suk and Elgar provide a more romantic finale. A fresh and spirited ensemble, they delight in engaging with the audience and are a joy to listen to. Michel Gershwin will play violin and Cyrill Gussaroff will perform on Trumpet. The repertoire of the Chamber Philharmonic Europe ranges from baroque to modern, classical symphony concerts, chamber concerts, operas and operettas. Previous seasons have seen the Chamber Philharmonic Europe

perform over 40 concerts Europewide, taking to the stage at many reputed concert halls and opera houses, including Théatre des Bouffes-Parisiens (Paris), De Munt Oper (Brussels), Koninklijk Theater Carré (Amsterdam), Proms at St Jude’s, London, Conway Hall, London, Gürzenich Saal, Cologne, Grand Théatre de la Ville (Luxembourg), Tonhalle (Düsseldorf), Town Hall, Middlesbrough and the Palladium, Malmö. Don’t miss this chance to enjoy this fresh and spirited ensemble for yourself as part of The Hawth Classical Season. Performance: Saturday 17 March 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley. Magnificat Workshop

Winter rehearsals are in full swing; Rutter’s Magnificat is nearly at performance level, perfectly in time for the Angus Ross concert on 18 March. Christ’s Hospital Choral Society would love you to come and listen. Magnificat is described as colourful and melodious, weaving a magical spell of balm and peace.... Intrigued? John Rutter wrote the piece relatively recently; its first performance was only in 1990 at the Carnegie Hall in New York. For this performance, however, you only need to travel as far as Christ’s Hospital Big School, which will suit many of us much better. Although not performed by Rutter himself, the choir is delighted to have the school’s Musical Director Alex Hodgkinson at the helm. He brings laughter and love for the music to rehearsals and performances. Christ’s Hospital Choral Society enjoy the reputation of making wonderful sounds, and are putting finishing touches on their performance before the big day. On Saturday 10 March, for their penultimate rehearsal, the choir hosts an

all-day workshop, open to all singers. Although it will be helpful if you are familiar with the piece, most singers who can sight-read will be able to make the most of the event by joining CHCS for the day. Musical Director for the day will be the extremely talented Oliver Hancock. He’s also young and witty, and so the day looks very promising from whatever angle you look at it. The format will be: Registration and welcome with tea, coffee and tasty biscuits, a warm up, followed by practising the various choral pieces over two sessions. During the third session you will sing through the complete Magnificat. It is interesting to note how good this will make you feel! The mid-day break normally coincides with the school’s pupils marching into lunch. While most singers are from the Sussex area, some regular participants travel as far as from the other side of London to join the choir for the day. You might translate this as, ‘these workshops are pretty good - I must be there too’. The workshop will be at Christ’s Hospital Big School, RH13 0YP, on 10 March from 10.15 – 17.00. Copies of the music will be available on the day. Price: £15 per person. it is essential you book by the 9th February. Please register your interest by ringing 07738835796 or email Mike44chcs@gmail.com. You will have a lovely time!

THAT’S LIFE - The Frank Sinatra Story

On the 60th anniversary of the release of Frank Sinatra’s Come Fly With Me and his performance in High Society next to Grace Kelly, this is a one of a kind theatre show celebrating the life story of the legendary singer, and it comes to Crawley on Saturday 17 March. That’s Life – The Frank Sinatra Story commemorates the incredible life and music of Frank Sinatra, taking audiences through the timeline of ups and downs that made him the historic musi-

cal figure that he is today - from big band singer to international superstar and now, an icon. Creator and co-producer Frank Cognoscenti performs the icon’s impressive songbook, whilst exploring his famous life story. Frank has been singing as Sinatra for over 15 years and during that time he has performed on BBC’s The One Show and Good Morning Britain, and has also performed in front of many high - profile celebrities, including Simon Cowell. Frank is very passionate about

this new show: “I felt it was time to create a show that was dedicated to the man himself. As a true fan, this is a dream come true for me to be able to create a show which combines Sinatra’s full and incredible life story, with 40 handpicked master pieces from his impressive songbook. We have worked hard to recreate the exact sound of the original arrangements using a full orchestra for our studio recordings, as well as using the original recordings and concert performances as reference and inspiration.” The show touches on events in Sinatra’s life and recreates many important points in his career, such as The Frank Sinatra Show in 1952 with Louis Armstrong, The Royal Festival hall concerts in 1962 and 1970, the Live at the Sands concert in 1965, The Sinatra & Jobim TV Special in 1967 and many more memorable moments. “I want the audience to enjoy and sing along to the classics, as well as hear some rarely performed gems. We want people to go away having seen the great details of Sinatra’s challenging but incredible life” added Frank. “This is quite a large-scale production, with an incredible amount of thought and hard work, out of love and respect for Sinatra. This is like no other Sinatra Show that has toured before.” Performance: Saturday 17 March, 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £23, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth. co.uk.

Horsham’s Seedy Saturday

Although cold and wet outside, it was warm and friendly inside at Transition Horsham’s 9th annual seed swap. Organisers stated: “We had one of our best attendances ever and lots of gardeners had saved their own seed to bring and swap.” Jean Griffin, gardening expert from BBC local radio Sussex and Kent, opened the event (which

took place on Saturday 10 February) with encouraging words. She answered questions on gardening and offered advice. Amongst the various stalls in the hall were those of two local nature reserves, Warnham and Chesworth, the latter having a fascinating dissection of owl regurgitations. New Friends of Horsham Park

offered sponsored bird boxes and spoke to people about their plans to help the Park become better than ever. Sussex Wildlife Trust was there with Brinsbury College and Horsham Horticultural Society to talk about and promote their organisations. There was a sustainable theme, not only through seed saving and swapping, but from the new Horsham Repair Café, which opens at the Quaker Meeting House on the first Saturday morning of every month. Groundworks also offered lots of advice on energy saving and related subjects. Wimblehurst Chocolates showcased their delicious local makes; the little chocolate dinosaurs were very popular and quickly went extinct. As usual everyone enjoyed the homemade soup and bread, or tea and cake. A raffle brought the event to a close with very generous prizes from the stalls. All involved declared it “a really enjoyable community event and a good start to the gardening year!”

50% stamp duty offer on homes at Durrants Village

Renaissance Villages, the awardwinning luxury retirement developer, is offering to pay 50% of the stamp duty on properties reserved at Durrants Village before the end of March 2018. This offer provides interested buyers discounts of more than £7,700 for a two bedroom cottage and £10,300 on the purchase of a three bedroom cottage, giving prospective residents the opportunity to make significant savings. Durrants Village is set amongst 30 acres of idyllic parkland in the hamlet of Faygate and close to the market town of Horsham. The village offers a total of 175 luxury retirement properties, comprising a mixture of two bedroom apartments and two and three bedroom cottages. Surrounded by beautiful West Sussex countryside, but also within easy reach of London, Dur-

rants Village offers the best of both worlds for over 55s looking to make a smart downsizing move. The homes at Durrants Village centre around an on-site clubhouse that provides a range of country club-style facilities, including a restaurant, bar, lounge, swimming pool, gym and library. Within the landscaped grounds there is also a croquet lawn, a lake complete with duck houses and a lake house for residents to enjoy. Renaissance Villages will also be implementing bespoke home-care services that will offer residents a hotel-style standard of service as well as peace of mind should their care needs change in the future. The 50% stamp duty offer applies to selected properties among the two and three bedroom cottages currently available at Durrants Village. With prices for these cot-

tages ranging from £510,000 for a two bedroom cottage and up to £615,000 for a three bedroom cottage, the offer represents savings of between £7,750 and £10,375. James Cobb, sales and marketing director at Renaissance Villages, which is part of the Inspired Villages Group, comments: “We think stamp duty is a key barrier stopping people from downsizing, so we wanted to do something to help those that would like to make the move but have felt held back by or have hesitated because of the punitive tax. “We hope that the offer enables those looking to rightsize their property and lifestyle needs to now take the exciting leap and start enjoying the wonderful burden free community environment that Durrants Village offers, particularly for those seeking a peaceful country-

side home with a variety of sociable activities on their doorstep. We hope that new residents will feel inspired to use the money they save for a long-desired special purchase or perhaps for the trip of a lifetime.” Renaissance Villages further assists customers in making the move into one of their developments with their ‘Easy Move’ initiative. This represents a package of services that are designed to relieve the stress or pressures of a downsizing move, including an assisted move and part-exchange initiative, recommended solicitors, help with decluttering and with settling in to the new home, an interior design service and a discount offer for a recommended removal service. Customers can pick and mix from this range of services depending on the level of assistance desired for their move. On 23 March, Durrants Village will be holding an ‘Easy Move’ event, bringing this package of services to life for interested buyers. Prospective residents will be able to meet representatives from the Easy Move service to discuss how they can help to make a downsizing move more manageable. The village currently has two and three bedroom cottages available, with prices starting from £510,000 for a two bedroom cottage and from £527,950 for a three bedroom cottage. For more information about the 50% stamp duty offer, the properties available at Durrants Village or to register your interest in attending the Easy Move event, please visit www.durrantsvillage.co.uk, email sales.durrants@renaissancevillages.co.uk or call 01293 851 935.

Horsham halt high flying Hythe with creditable draw

Photos by John Lines

Saturday February 24 – Bostik Football League South Division Hythe Town 1 1 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The teams had to be satisfied with a share of the points, neither side being able to fashion a deciding goal in a gritty second half in bracing temperatures at Hythe Town’s Reachfields Stadium. But, although the Hornets

Sport

got a story? email us at sport@thedistrictpost.co.uk

had beaten Hythe in November, the Kent side came straight off two strong wins (during which they had amassed nine goals and moved up to seventh in the table), it was a creditable result to hold Hythe – the Cannons. Horsham drew first blood, when in the third minute, Alfie Rogers unleashed a strong strike that Will Godmon in the Hythe goal would normally have gathered as a formality, but contrived to give the Hornets the lead, to the pleasure of Hornet supporters

who had caught the supporters’ coach from Collyers to boost the meagre crowd. Josh Pelling in the Horsham goal was brought into action ten minutes later, the swirling wind leaving him with little option than to push a Hythe cross away, from which a Horsham breakaway foray almost put the Hornets further ahead - but the corkscrew attempt from Toby House hit the bar with Godmon out of position. Charlie Farmer was then unable to convert Tom Tolfrey’s supply before, at the other end, Hythe’s Chris Kinnear shot harmlessly adrift. Hythe, though, soon equalised when Joe Shelley was penalised for too robust a tackle, Darren Oldaker’s free kick evading the wall to find the net well beyond Pelling’s reach. Horsham’s wall did subsequently block another free kick and after Pelling had saved a dangerous Hythe header the first half ended one apiece. Resuming, Hythe continued to press, but despite a free kick and a corner, Horsham kept them at bay until they went on the attack, only for Salvyn Kitsu’s strike failing to trouble Godmon. Horsham and Hythe made substitutions to no avail and then, with 13 minutes of full time remaining, a controversially harsh red card saw Hythe reduced to 10 men. Lewis Hyde tried to take advantage but headed just wide and then the Hornets were indebted to another fine save by Pelling to enable them to come away with a point, notching up 14 points on visits to the Garden of England this season, a hitherto unaccustomed experience. Horsham, still 12th, return to Lancing on Saturday to take on 22nd in the table Ashford United. The Hornets have beaten Ashford twice so far this season – they won 6-0 in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round in September and then overcame them 2-1 in Kent in December’s league match

Another late goal deprives Horsham of a valuable point Saturday February 24– South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1 2 Milton Keynes Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Another frustrating Saturday ended in defeat for Horsham – frustrating because once again they demonstrated that they are capable of holding other teams for substantial periods of games, but, as before, the inability to score goals mitigated against the possibility of a Horsham victory. After winning comprehensively in the first week of the season, despite battling hard week after week, the team has been unable to withstand the exodus of the experienced core of last season’s side. Against Milton Keynes, the first half presented no real goal scoring opportunities for either side and the score remained goal-less up to half time despite an opposition short corner just before the break. On the restart Horsham keeper Andrew Isaacs saved a backhand strike before MK fired harmlessly across the goal. Then, three MK short corners followed in quick succession, the ball being smashed into the top netting from the second to put MK ahead. An immediate Horsham attack came to nought before MK somehow contrived to miss an open goal. The game suddenly burst

into life – Horsham’s Dan Humphreys hit the post, then MK shot wide across the goal and, following a goal mouth scramble, Horsham earned two short corners - enabling Captain Sean Pearcy to equalise. Crucially, a golden opportunity for Horsham to take the lead in a one on one went begging, then, having kept out two MK shorts, the visitors scored on the verge of stoppage time. Horsham took off keeper Isaacs to launch an all out assault, but, despite frantic attacks, the game finished with Horsham on the losing end, a late opposition goal again sealing their fate. With Horsham inevitably beginning to think about rebuilding for next season, Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “It was an even game and we hit the post. Barney Knights Johnson has been scoring a goal most games, but we need to strengthen up front.” While, Captain Sean Pearcy said: “We’ve still got to play leaders Oxford Hawks and current runners up London Edwardians, but those fixtures apart we’ve got some winnable games if we can enhance our ball retention skills.” Having boosted their resources, penultimate club Henley won again, widening the gap over Horsham to six points. On Saturday Horsham Men travel to play fifth- placed Oxford University – with whom they drew 2-2 at home in November

Pay What You Can day returns to Crawley FC ! Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Jason Hayes of Holmbush Farm’s D. Durrants Removals & Strorage is very pleased to announce in conjunction with Crawley Town FC that Pay What You Can Day is returning to The Reds’ Checkatrade.com Stadium and the club is hoping to overtake last year’s PWYC day 4,266 attendance when visitors Hartlepool were beaten 1-0. This season the chosen game is against high flying Swindon Town on April 2nd – Easter Monday. At the Checkatrade Stadium to launch the game D. Durrants’ Director Jason Hayes told the District Post: “My company is very excited to support Crawley Town FC and welcome local fans to the Swindon match. Let’s hope for another bumper crowd, creating the 12th man to push the Reds on

to victory! The idea of the PWYC initiative is to attract as many first-time fans and families to the Checkatrade Stadium as possible. Once again, the minimum price for a ticket will be £1 and each applicant can have up to 6 tickets.” Kelly Derham, Durrants’ Operations Director says: “We are absolutely delighted to offer our second Pay What You Can game and with Swindon well-supported away from home and both clubs doing well we’re hoping for a gate of around 5,000, which would create a fantastic atmosphere inside the stadium for Head Coach Harry Kewell and the team. We learned a lot from last year’s event in terms of offering a bit more than just football and we’re working hard to provide plenty of pre match entertainment.” Harry Kewell added: “I would like to give Jason, Kelly and Durrants

special mention – without their financial support we wouldn’t be able to stage the day, its great that they’re backing us with the PWYC game.”. As part of their sponsorship package Durrants are offering 2 free tickets for any home game for the rest of this season and next for future customers. Kelly Derham summing up with: “Last season the average price paid for a PWYC ticket was £4, some people paid more than the normal ticket price to support the idea, but of course it is entirely up to the individual what they pay, we just want to encourage as many supporters as possible to come along – whether they’re regulars, returners who haven’t been for a while, or planning their first visit.” Tickets are now on sale direct from the club at the Checkatrade Stadium (telephone number 01293 410005).

Another big win puts YMCA top by six clear points

Photo by Tim Hewlett Saturday February 24 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Worthing United 0 4 Horsham YMCA Football

Martin Read - Sports Reporter In arctic temperatures at Worthing United’s Robert Albon Memorial Ground Horsham YMCA stretched their unbeaten league run to 11 games, having

won the last six matches without conceding a goal. YM beat Worthing 5-0 in the first round of the Peter Bentley Cup in August and overcame them 3-1 at Gorings Mead in the league in September - and they duly secured a

seasonal treble, after being in command for most of the game. But, although Luke Donaldson gave YM the lead in the fifth minute, the combination of stubborn Worthing defending, and a rocky pitch - making control of the ball and passing very difficult acted as a leveller in the first half. Despite the bitter east wind creating problems, YM came into their own after the break, in the same way as they had done in the mudfest at their previous game at Eastbourne United – two goals in quick succession by Dave Brown sealing Worthing’s fate. Brown’s fierce drive defeated the Worthing keeper and when Luke Gedling uncharacteristically missed a penalty it mattered not because Brown followed through and blasted the ball into the net. Both sides made substitutions, new signing from Burgess Hill, Tony Garrod coming on for YM amid Worthing changes, but the hosts were unable to make any impact and, five minutes from full time, Sam Schaaf unleashed one of his trademark net-busting volleys to round off YM’s comprehensive 4-0 victory. Elsewhere, high flyers Chiches-

ter City lost 1-0 to bottom club Littlehampton Town and Haywards Heath were undone 3-0 by Newhaven. So, following their Worthing win, YM top the table with 60 points, six more than Three Bridges with Chichester third on 53, Haywards Heath on 51 and Saltdean 50. Bridges and Chichester have a game in hand, while Heath and Saltdean have played two games less than YM, but points in the bank are crucial and if YM keep winning then games in hand are of little consequence. This Saturday in a key upper table clash as YM head into the business end of the season, they return to Gorings Mead to play Chichester City, against whom they drew 1-1 in the league in October before being knocked out of the RUR Cup by them in January’s Quarter Final. Meanwhile, after the Worthing game YM Manager Peter Buckland said: “On a hard, bumpy pitch and in the biting wind the lads did a good professional job against hard working and well organised opposition. It was pleasing to get three points and a clean sheet. Everybody did their job well and it was good to give Tony Garrod his
