Grab a Piazza the action Horsham’s Piazza Italia returns this year with new cars, new foods and new entertainment
Horsham District Council’s Piazza Italia festival is returning for a 12th successive year this Easter weekend, on Good Friday (30 March) and Easter Monday (1 April). Taking centre stage in Horsham’s Carfax, the event celebrates all things Italian, from supercars, to fine cuisine and music, and promises to deliver more Italian flavoured variety than ever. The event will showcase thrilling displays of Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Maserati’s, Abarths, and Alfa Romeos; along with British classics, such as the Mini and McLaren. Good Friday’s Carfax display will be a first in putting Lamborghi-
nis centre stage, supported by HR Owen Pangbourne Lamborghini. There will also be a welcome return of Italian motorbikes, with a display zone in East Street. Good Friday’s largest ever display of fifty plus classic Minis is organised by the ItalianJob.Com charity. On Easter Monday, Premier GT are promising an amazing selection of supercars and an expanded Race Paddock. The Sporting Bears will return on both days, based in Market Square, giving visitors the opportunity to actually ride in these supercars, rather than just visualise them. As well as the amazing cars, Italia in Piazza will return, in partner-

ship with Panino, with a new look market offering an even greater range of Italian food delicacies than in previous years . Responding to feedback, a larger selection of Italian style street food will be available this year. Pick up your downloadable menus from the Piazza Italia Facebook page, displaying what’s on offer during both days of the festival. There will be a range of themed entertainments around the town; ranging from professional opera singing, to go-kart racing. New this year is the opportunity to drive the Pirelli Formula One simulator – a life-size replica of
a Grand Prix racing car, as seen at the Formula One British Grand Prix at Silverstone and part of the Parkside Kwik Fit Road Safety Zone. Also on offer will be two additional Formula One simulators and Slot car racing located at the Council’s Parkside offices in Chart Way next to the Black Jug pub – so even more people can have a go. The Piazza Italia supported charities this year are Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, The Springboard Project and The Children’s Trust. On Friday 16th March 28 volunteers found places to bed down in the grounds of Horsham YMCA Football Club as part of YMCA DownsLink Group’s Sleep Easy 2018. or actually experiencing homelessness and the YMCA works tirelessly to support and enable them to find safe accommodation and direction in life. More than 170 people were involved in total across four YMCA DLG Sleep Easy events in Horsham, Hove and Guildford. Martina slept out in Horsham and said, “This was the first time I have taken part in Sleep Easy. I think everyone should do this at least once to make you realise how

very hard it is. Next time I pass a homeless person I will remember and try to do more in the future.” Steve Darken, YMCA DLG’s Head of Communities for North Sussex said, “Homelessness among young people is increasing. In addition to those we see on the streets are the hidden homeless who are sofa surfing not knowing each morning where they will be the next night. “We are grateful to all those who slept “rough” for just one night to raise awareness of youth homelessness. They are raising money to support the vulnerable young people that are housed and helped in a number of ways by YMCA DownsLink Group. We are very grateful to everyone who took part.” The TGI Friday Youth Group at St Mary’s Church, Horsham staged their own sleepover event a week earlier. This meant that although
they were too young to join the outdoor event, they could also support Sleep Easy and raised £90. Money raised from the Horsham and Crawley Sleep Easy will be used to benefit young people in the local area. For those who have faced homelessness the journey towards independent living can be difficult to negotiate, but YMCA workers walk alongside them and offer the support they need, along with YMCA projects that help them to reconnect with learning and training. To date more than £42,000 has been raised. Thank you to all those that have donated and more donations are welcome at www. bit.ly/SleepEasyGive The hope is to raise more than £50,000 from this one night of sacrifice. Prime Minister praises Horsham’s Apprenticeship Fair
martin read
Reporter
Horsham MP Jeremy Quin focused attention on Horsham at last week’s Prime Minister’s Question Time when he promoted the wellattended HDC Apprenticeship Fair, recently staged at Horsham’s Drill Hall, telling the District Post: “It was a real pleasure to use PMQs to celebrate a Horsham
success story – HDC’s Apprenticeship Fair, which, as I saw for myself, had provoked huge interest and also the massive fall in local youth unemployment since 2010.” In the house, the Prime Minister responded to saying: “I commend Horsham for holding that Apprenticeship Fair – it is very important that we give young people the opportunity for those apprenticeships.” Then, referring to Mr Quin, the PM then went on to add: “My Right Honourable friend is absolutely right – we can
only fund those public services if we have the strength in our economy providing the income for us to be able to do that.” Jeremy Quin has had previous successes through the medium of Prime Minister’s Question Time, saying: “A well timed PMQ is a great way to highlight an issue. After I had conducted a lot of lobbying behind the scenes it was through a response to a question from me in PMQs that David Cameron indicated that Southern Rail season ticket holders would get the extra compensation for which I had been campaigning. I also used PMQs to highlight local school funding concerns and in particular our need for a minimum funding guarantee as part of the campaign that saw a £28m improvement in West Sussex school funding. While apprenticeships are a success story I know from talking to local businesses there are ways they can be improved - especially at degree level. I am discussing this right now with Ministers and raising the theme at PMQs will help.” The March 14th edition of Prime Minister’s Question Time featuring Mr Quin’s exchange with the Prime Minister can be seen on You Tube https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=SLJuCQr6Wtc

Know your rights Our fortnightly review of the law and you, with Mancini Legal – Horsham’s leading lawyer. 42 PERCENT OF MARRIAGES END IN DIVORCE Whilst the divorce rate in the UK is falling, in large part due to fewer couples actually getting married, an amazingly high 42% of marriages in England and Wales still end up that way. Equally surprising, the average marriage that ends in divorce only lasts eleven and a half years. Nobody walks down the aisle planning to get divorced yet so often it just goes wrong. In 2016 (the latest stats from the ONS) there were 106,959 divorces of opposite-sex couples. Age of same-sex divorce peaks between 35 and 55. IF IT HAPPENS TO YOU, YOU’RE GOING TO NEED A LAWYER Marriage is a contract. A contract occurs when one person offers something, another accepts, and there is ‘consideration’ – an amount paid or, in the case of marriage, a wedding ring, symbolic of continuity, in the presence of witnesses. Marriage is a contract in which lawyers are generally not involved. The contract may be made in a church, in front of a registrar, or equally these days in a romantic hotel or beauty spot. But it is still binding and if a time comes when you want to get out of it, you’re going to need a lawyer. THE LEGAL VIEW In UK law the resolution of a contract dispute is based on equity – that is what is fair and reasonable to all parties given the circumstances. The challenge with divorce is that it’s a verbal contract and you don’t set out terms and conditions in writing. Rather it’s based on promises and expectation. For example, if a man marries a woman and has children he is expected to provide for them. The history of divorce law is fascinating. Before 1857 only men could divorce, by an Act of Parliament, which was hugely expensive. After 1857 ‘ordinary’ people could divorce, but a woman had to prove adultery plus additional faults such as rape or incest. In 1937 this was changed to include drunkenness, insanity and desertion.
The law finally became sensible in 1969 when the Divorce Reform Act allowed couples to divorce simply if they were separated for a period of time. However, divorces still continued to favour men until 2000, when a landmark case in the House of Lords recognised the contribution of a wife as ‘a homemaker’. MOST DIVORCES ARE CONTENTIOUS At Mancini Legal we’ve acted for a lot of people getting divorced and know that, although many couples try and keep it on friendly terms, the break-up of a marriage can be every bit as passionate as the love that kindled it. Feelings run high on both sides – and, as with most things legal, there are two sides to every story. Some divorces can be totally vitriolic with parties scrapping for everything they can get. Yet with so many divorces on an annual basis, family law in this area has many precedents and, in most cases, the two party’s lawyers will settle out of court – the settlement might not always be entirely amicable, but it is usually fair. DO WOMEN GET A RAW DEAL? Perhaps because of this legacy of gender inequality, women still often feel they have to fight harder. Divorce is one of the most stressful things in life you can go through, especially if you’re the one having to look after the children at the same time, or equally the one who has to continue to provide. We are not here to judge – at Mancini Legal we have learned to be extremely sensitive and supportive through the divorce process, equally for both female and male clients. It’s a very personal, very human aspect of the law and our role is simply to resolve a settlement that is fair for our client. If you have relationship issues that you feel might require a legal settlement, please do give our dedicated family law team a call on 01403 337337. All initial consultations are free of charge.

Renewed efforts to stop construction of incinerator
No Incinerator 4 Horsham met last week to renew efforts to stop an industrial incinerator being built in Horsham. It is understood that Britanicrest submitted a new plan for an incinerator at the brickworks off the A264 at the Great Daux roundabout. West Sussex County Council planning department is currently verifying the planning application. The community action group, pictured, were joined by a national NGO, UK Win, offering their expertise, as they are dedicated to stop incineration of waste – ‘Bin the Burners’. A group representative stated:
“UK Win are behind the political cross party Early Day Motion (581)* to place a moratorium on new incinerators, because there is not enough waste to feed the incinerators currently in use and being built in the UK, but this legislation will come way too late for West Sussex. “Last year, an incredible 1000 people objected to an incinerator being built by Britaniacrest, and it is therefore hoped communities will all write to the council again, as their first objections will not be counted for this new application. “Research increasingly shows that incineration decreases the rate of recycling and with the amount
of plastic in production set to decrease dramatically in the next few years, what will this Horsham incinerator burn?” * http://www.parliament.uk/ edm/2017-19/581 To sign the Petition, please visit: https://www.change. org/p/no-incinerator-4-hors ham?recruiter=147148750&u tm_source=share_petition&utm_ medium=copylink&utm_ campaign=share_petition To follow No Incinerator, please visit: www.facebook.com/noincinerator4horsham or http://www. ni4h.org/
Adopt-a-Street anti-litter scheme get a boost from ‘The Wombles’
Horsham District Council’s Adopt-a-Street project was given a helping hand, earlier this month, by a group of children from Thakeham Primary School called ‘The Wombles’, as they set out to clean up the grounds surrounding their school. The young team were equipped with litter pickers, gloves, and bin bags, as they collected litter around their local area. When
asking the children why they wanted to get involved, one replied: “It’s good for the environment and helps the animals out”. The Adopt-a-Street project was established in March 2015, encouraging residents to take extra care of their street, or an area they particularly value in the community, by picking up the litter left by others. The initiative now boasts in excess of 3000 volun-
teers since its launch. Commenting on ‘The Wombles’ efforts, Cabinet Member for Waste, Recycling and Cleansing, Cllr Philip Circus, said: “I am really pleased that so many of our district’s residents are taking pride in their local areas and have signed up to be Adopt-a-Street volunteers with the Council’s litter picking scheme. “It is particularly encouraging to see so many school aged children getting involved, at such a young age, to care for their environment and clear their area of unsightly litter.” To support volunteers, the council provides health and safety training, advice to co-ordinate volunteers, and equipment in the form of litter pickers, plastic bags, protective gloves and hi-viz jackets. If you are interested in joining the scheme or you would like to get a group of volunteers together, please complete the Adopta-Street online form at: https:// ebusiness.horsham.gov.uk/outreach/WM_AdoptAStreet.ofml More information about the scheme itself can be found at: https://www.horsham.gov.uk/ bins/adopt-a-street .

Horsham school holds Animal Day in support of RSPCA
Pupils at a primary school in Horsham dressed up as all creatures great and small to help raise funds to support the work of the RSPCA. Arunside School in Blackbridge Lane, held an animal day last month, where all the children, and most of the teachers, dressed up in animal costumes to raise money for charity. This was organised by the school council in an effort to raise awareness of the needs of animals. Chloe Murray, school administrator, said: “The school council, which is made up of children from Year One to Year Six, decided to organise this event to make the children aware about the importance of owning a pet, and the work of the RSPCA.

“We held an assembly in the morning, led by Ms Gallagher in Year Five, who showed us a video about what it takes to look after an animal. The children also asked lots of questions, such as what can go wrong when you have an animal, how much does it cost to take care of a pet, and where do you get animals from. “The day was a hit with the pupils, with one pupil commenting that eating cakes was even more fun when raising money for a great charity!” The RSPCA gave the school an array of magazines, to put in each of the classrooms, for further reading. There was also a prize for the best costumes for girls and boys, as well as a cake sale to raise extra
funds, and the pupils were given RSPCA goody bags and stickers. The animal day raised nearly £200 for the RSPCA. Nicky Ifould, Acting Head of Fundraising Events at the RSPCA, said: “We are so grateful to Arunside Primary School for taking part in this fundraiser for us. It certainly looked like fun and the money raised will help us to continue rescuing, rehoming and rehabilitating animals in desperate need of care.” If you’d like to hold a dress down day or fundraising event in aid of the RSPCA, please contact the Events Team on 0300 123 0528 or find out more by visiting the website: https://www.rspca.org.uk/ getinvolved/fundraise/ideas
Blue ribbon day for Horsham Museum and Art Gallery Curator
Horsham District Council’s Museum and Art Gallery Curator, Jeremy Knight, enjoyed a blue ribbon day last Friday (16 March) when he was given special recognition, for his 30 years’ service as Curator to the Museum, by The High Sheriff of West Sussex, Lady Emma Barnard. The award recognises the appreciation of the residents, and people of The High Sheriff’s County, for exceptional activity
and contribution in enhancing the life of the community. Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr, Jonathan Chowen, commented: “We all congratulate Jeremy for this significant recognition, which is so well deserved. He works tirelessly to make Horsham Museum and Art Gallery the very best that it can be – a treasure trove and tribute to local culture, arts and heritage.”

Loving son’s Marathon run Countryside kick starts new football pavillion in Broadbridge Heath Jane’s Wish, a local charity setup to make a difference to families in Sussex, organise (and fund) days out for children and teens in the Horsham district affected by cancer, whether they have had cancer themselves, or a close relative has been affected. The charity was founded only a year ago by four friends with a passion for charity fundraising - in particular, cancer charities. Trustee, Jose Manuel, lost his mother, Jane, to breast cancer as a teen. Despite her illness, Jane would always make family time the best it could be, and ensure that family days out continued. Through his 20s, Jose fundraised for many cancer charities until realising that, although there are many national charities devoted to fighting cancer and providing care, at a local level, there were few charities providing some respite to cancer-affected families. Jose had the idea to start a brand new charity dedicated to helping other children and teens facing similar experiences, so that families can get some quality time together without the worry of having to fund or organise it. Overwhelmed by the support the charity has received, since its conception, Jose explained: “We have had a fantastic response from the local community, with many kind messages on social
media, and while out fundraising. Clearly, there is a need for what the charity offers, and there are many families who we can support. To date, we have helped 3 families, but in the coming months hope to help countless more, as we continue to fundraise and spread the charity message across Sussex. “I am running the Brighton Marathon on 15th April, in my efforts to fundraise for Jane’s Wish.” To make a donation, please visit: https://mydonate.bt.com/ fundraisers/josesmarathon

The 41-year-old father-ofthree was inspired to sign up for the race as his father, David Doyle, had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. However, when his dad died aged 67 in November, Steve decided to launch his fundraising page earlier than planned and had a remarkable response. Many of David’s friends and

He was orphaned at the age of 13, when his parents died in a plane crash, so he’d had a traumatic experience, which I think helped give him strength to deal with the diagnosis.” David was also a senior visiting lecturer at University College London and, after he was diagnosed, he volunteered for research studies at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Steve, whose sister, Jenny Brown, is also running the London Landmarks Half Marathon, said: “My dad was very passionate about research and understood how vital it is to ensure other people in the future won’t have to go through what he went through. I’m delighted to be running for Alzheimer’s Research UK to support his legacy.” Kenneth Foreman, Senior Sporting Events Manager at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Steve and his dad’s story shows the devastating effect dementia can have on a family. “We have been blown away by the amount he has raised and these vital funds will power

A runner has raised more than £12,000 for dementia research after launching his half marathon fundraising page the same day his dad passed away. Southwater resident, Steve Doyle, is one of around 300 people signed up to run the inaugural London Landmarks Half Marathon on Sunday (25 March) for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
former work colleagues made donations, including a significant donation from eXmoor Pharma Concepts, a Bristol-based company he co-founded just a few years before he had to retire early, due to his symptoms. Steve, the Chief Commercial Officer for an online advertising company, said: “I’m very pleased to have raised so much money for dementia research, but it’s not really down to anything I’ve done in particular. It’s a reflection of the high esteem in which my father was held. “He was a biochemical engineer and started a company with some people he worked with in a previous role. He had to retire about three years after setting up the company, but it has gone from strength to strength since.” David was diagnosed in 2010, aged 60, although he and his family first started noticing symptoms a few years before. Steve explained: “The first signs something was wrong was when he started to make mistakes at work. It’s not the sort of profession where errors were possible, as it involved the engineering to start the building of multi-million-pound factories. “The main symptom was just increasing forgetfulness until he got to the point where he stopped

Eight coaches made their way down to the Brighton Centre for this information packed day, comprising 250 stalls and information points, and representatives from over 150 universities, who were on hand to help students make that all important next choice. Ian McAlister, Director of Higher Education and Progression at Collyer’s, said: “It is always an exciting day, particularly as our students have become very discerning in their choices for
their next educational step.” Collyer’s Deputy Principal Steve Martell said: “Universities have to compete for the best students and that means Collyer’s students are in an excellent position to access the courses they want. “Approximately 75% of Collyer’s leavers go into Higher Education, with 80% of those students applying to university able to go to their first choice institution.” Collyer’s student Natasza Szczepanski, said: “It was a really big event and I spent the whole time finding out what was on offer. I’m looking forward to sorting through the prospectuses to read in detail about the courses.” Ian Paku said: “lt was a very informative event and particularly helpful to have a ticket with
a scan bar code, which meant I could request lots of information to be sent directly to me.” Nell Campbell said: “The universities that I came to find
Approximately 75% of Collyer’s leavers go into Higher Education out about had all the information I needed, which will help me decide which open days to visit. I also found a few uni’s I hadn’t thought of, so it was very helpful.” The UCAS exhibition fair gave students the opportunity to ask the difficult questions the websites or prospectus cannot always
answer. The university representatives were an excellent mix of current university students and academic staff. Student Rachel Ahonaruogho said: “I am thinking of studying law and it was very helpful to have representatives walk you through what to look for in a prospectus. This really helped me understand what questions to ask when I visit university open days.” Collyer’s Head of Pirie House, Ellen Bateman accompanied students on the trip. She said: “It was encouraging to see our students engaged and invested in their future. They were genuinely interested in the event and collected lots of useful information to help them make the correct choice.” Student Nadia Hemming said:
“It was good to get a feel of all the universities without necessarily having to visit all the open days! It was a very good trip and super useful!” Ian McAlister added: “This was a very successful event and will springboard our students into thinking very clearly about their next steps. We take this very seriously at Collyer’s and invest a great deal of time and effort into ensuring our students are well informed. “I would like to thank all the first year tutors who accompanied the trip and my great thanks go Nicola Algar, Jane French and Tracey Gibb for their sterling efforts in organising the logistics and ticketing for the event.” Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley said: “I am hugely encouraged by the students’ active participation in the UCAS Convention at the Brighton Centre. This event is just one of many that the students will have in the coming months, to help them make an informed decision about their academic futures. A big thank-you to Ian McAlister and the teachers who accompanied the trip.” The next large scale UCAS progression events at Collyer’s are the ever popular and highly rated Higher Education Evenings, held at the Ofsted Outstanding college on the 18th and 19th April.

Don walks the line between folk, Americana and rootsrock, mining the influence of classic 1970s singer-songwriters while creating a sound that nods to the past yet still pushing ahead toward something new. Gallardo has earned a broad audience on both sides of the Atlantic. Songs of Rod Stewart by Cregan & Co One of the most influential guitarists in Rod Stewart’s original band ‘The Faces’, Jim Cregan, will be performing at Horsham’s Capitol Theatre, later this month. Jim co-wrote, co-produced, and musically directed for Rod, for approaching two decades. He co-wrote the hits, recorded the albums, and toured the world with the musical legend – writing and performing You’re in My Heart, I Was Only Joking, Baby Jane, Blondes Have More Fun, Forever Young, D’Ya Think I’m Sexy and many more No1 hits. Now, more than 40 years on, he has formed his own band,

New comedy competition to launch as part of Horsham District Year of Culture 2019
Mon 7th May 2018 The Sussex Comedian of the Year, organised by comedy experts ‘Barnstormers’, and talent agency ‘Andromeda Talent’, will be making its debut, thanks to a grant from the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 fund, and sponsorship from district based business ‘Freeman Brothers Funeral Directors’. The Year of Culture grants panel, made up of culture and arts representatives, were highly impressed by the plans for the comedy competition, which is set to include heats across the district and a cash prize for the winner – as well as a slot during Barnstormers Comedy’s annual extravaganza at The Capitol, Horsham. Horsham District Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “I am really pleased to be announcing this creation of a completely new type of event and experience as part
of our Year of Culture celebrations, especially as it looks set to become a regular biannual event. “Bringing new local talent to light is what the Year of Culture is all about and we look forward to celebrating and enjoying this new competition.” Becky Hughes, Freeman Brothers’ Community Co-Ordinator, whose role involves identifying community partnership opportunities such as this, could see the potential in sponsoring the competition: “This is a unique and exciting opportunity for Freeman Brothers, and something we’ve never done before, proving that there are new experiences to be had - even when your business has been running for over 160 years! “It’s great to support an event which will have a reach throughout the district, and we hope that this will be the beginning of a successful future for the competition.”
Kevin Precious, Barnstormers Comedy’s founder, promoter and compere in-chief, said: “It’s a great privilege to be providing a platform for the Sussex Comedian of the Year competition, and to be part of the Year of Culture. We’ve been hosting shows in Horsham for 15 years, and have a lovely longstanding connection to both the people and the area.’” Further information on how to apply to take part in the competition, as well as heat dates, will be available on the Year of Culture website soon, as well as via the Barnstormers Comedy website www.barnstormerscomedy.com in due course. Keep up to date with Year of Culture updates via @HDculture2019 on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and subscribe to the monthly newsletter to be the first to hear about competitions, announcements and much more via www.hdculture2019.co.uk.

Sunday 6 May - Friday 1 June, The Hawth Foyer Crawley
Laura was born in Solarino, Sicily in 1974. She graduated from the city’s Institute of Arts, with a diploma in fresco and gold leafing in the early nineties. Laura then moved to Venice to study at the Academia of Fine Arts, graduating with a BA in Theatrical Set and Costume Design. Whilst studying, Laura gained regular solo exhibition experience alongside her work in scenic design. Throughout this time, she explored and developed her style,
using acrylics, watercolour and pencil. In 1999, Laura moved to London with a view to widening her artistic and linguistic horizons. While in London, Laura has worked with quite a few well known faces through her work in West End Theatres. These people have given her lots of encouragement and support with her artwork. In the Spring of 2005, Laura exhibited for the first time in London, adopting a deliberately abstract
style, influenced by Vincent Van Gogh for the choice of colour and application of dynamic brush work. Laura’s background continues to feed her work with an exuberance, vitality and honesty. Her paintings are direct, evocative and uplifting. The exhibition in the Hawth Foyer will run from 6 May - 1 June and is free to view. Journey Into the Woods with HAODS
Be careful what you wish for... unless you’re wishing for a fantastic fairy-tale musical to come to the Horsham stage! This April, HAODS are bringing ‘Into The Woods’ to The Capitol.
Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom... there lived a host of fairy-tale characters in a land where stories collide, and we find out what happens after ‘Happily Ever After’, in a Sondheim musi-
cal filled with enchanting songs, and a story packed with adventure. The journey begins as a childless Baker and his wife set out to undo a spell put on them by
the Witch next door. To lift her curse, and have the child they so long for, they must bring her four things: a cow as white as milk; a cape as read as blood; hair as yellow as corn and a slipper as pure as gold. Along the way, their story becomes tangled with other classic storybook characters, each on their own mission: Cinderella, Jack (and a beanstalk), Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and not one but two handsome princes! But just when you think they’ve all found their “happily ever after” and all the story is complete... the plot twists, and the adventure must continue! Join HAODS on this enchanting journey ‘Into The Woods’, in a fantastical fairy-tale world, where everything gets turned on its head, lessons are learned, and we find what happens after your wish has come true. Director Yvonne Chadwell commented: “Into the Woods has proved to be Sondheim’s most performed musical, partly because of its haunting music and clever lyrics, which are an essential part of the story telling, and partly because it is more than just a musical version of several of these well-known fairytales. It reflects on the personal and family relationships of the characters, as they journey through the
woods. The woods in fairy-tales are, according to some writers, “the place where inner darkness is confronted and where uncertainty is resolved about who one is”. Having faced their fears and worked collectively, most of our characters return from the woods wiser and more rounded people. Or are they...? With Andy Payne as Musical Director and David Hall and myself as Artistic Directors, this show is sure to delight- and challengethe audience as it has the cast.” ‘Into The Woods’ is not only a Tony Award Winning musical, but also a recent hit Disney Film, so come and join the adventure at The Capitol Theatre, Horsham from Tuesday 17 until Saturday 21 April. Performances: Tuesday to Friday evenings at 7:30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2pm and Saturday evening at 7pm. Tickets: Available from The Capitol box office: 01403 750 220 or online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com HAODS (Horsham Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society) have been entertaining the audiences of Horsham for over 60 years. New West Sussex Homes offer a glimpse of Village Life
An exciting range of homes will be opening at Warren Grove, a new development by Barratt Homes in Storrington, West Sussex, on Saturday 24 March. The attractive development, of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, will provide an ideal option for first time buyers and growing families looking for a village lifestyle. And, with prices for the current release starting at £339,995 for a three-bedroom property, would-be homeowners will be able to take advantage of new stamp duty rules and Help to Buy. Homebuyers could find their own home within reach, using Help to Buy at Warren Grove, where a three-bedroom, twoparking spaces house, available for
te Quo rict Dist n e Th he w t Pos ing book
£339,995, could be secured with a 5% deposit of just under £17,000. Additional savings can be made on stamp duty for first time buyers. In November, Chancellor Phillip Hammond introduced stamp duty relief for first-time buyers purchasing homes for £500,000 or less. No stamp duty is payable for the first £300,000 and 5% on the remainder, this represents a saving of £5,000 on the same property. Lynnette St Quintin, Sales Director for Barratt Southern Counties: “The homes at Warren Grove have already attracted a lot of interest since they were released for sale off-plan. Our lovely new show homes and sales suite will allow potential buyers to see first-
hand the thoughtful design and high-quality finishes available in the properties here and also get to know the village.” Houses at Warren Grove have been carefully designed to make efficient use of space and maximise natural light. Open-plan living rooms feature French doors that open onto gardens and storage cupboards have been incorporated to reduce clutter. Plus, there are environmental benefits to living in a new home, such as smart insulation that makes the home up to 55% more efficient. Storrington is a thriving village with a well-preserved centre, a short walk from Warren Grove, much of which is a conservation
area. Known as a ‘gateway to the South Downs’, there are amenities more often found in a small town. There are independent cafés, tearooms and pubs, plus boutiques and antique shops alongside a couple of national chains such as Waitrose and Costa. Great for families, there are several good state primary schools in Storrington, including the Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ Storrington Primary School. For older children, Steyning Grammar School and The Weald School both score top marks from Ofsted. Proximity to the South Downs means that there is outstanding countryside practically on the doorstep and the seaside town of Worthing is just 10 miles away. For commuters, the market town of Horsham is about 14 miles away and there are direct trains from nearby Pulborough station to Gatwick airport (from 42 minutes), London Bridge (from 1 hour 18 minutes) and London Victoria (from 1 hour 14 minutes). A selection of three-bedroom homes is currently available at Warren Grove, with prices starting at £339,995. Two- and fourbedroom homes are expected to be released for sale later this year. To find out more, or to make an appointment to view the show homes, call 08444 171 251 or visit https://www.barratthomes. co.uk/new-homes/west-sussex/ H657901-Warren-Grove/

John Mikel gunning for a record Motor Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Last season Faygate’s John Mikel successfully retained his UK National Legends Championship, notching up a superb hat-trick of wins – 2015-2017 - in his trade mark dashing orange-coloured 1934 Ford replica Bonnie & Clyde style car (Number 4), sponsored by K-Seal. At the end of the long season John returned to the Indy Circuit at Brands, where the title hung on the very last race when, in front of
30,000 enthusiastic spectators at the iconic track, John lifted the title from a field of 34 cars with international drivers. And, John is back, battling to lift the title for a record breaking fourth consecutive year. John said “Mickel Motorsport is a tightly run operation and if you want to win, you need to put in the very hard work and time to ensure that the cars will perform. Then it’s all down to how we drive on track. There is no way I could do all of this without my sponsors and partners who are a vital part of my Championship campaign each year.
I always start off the season saying that if you get to 8,000 points you’ll win the title. Last year we got 7670, and it was so tight. That is what Legends racing is. It’s all about how many races you finish in the top three, I was thrilled to lift the title again last year and I’m keen to do it again!” John continued: “The driver line up remains the same and I’m delighted to announce that Mickel Motorsport is receiving ongoing support from many more partners for the 2018 season. I’m very excited to be racing another year with the UK Na-
tional Legends Championship – as MD I feel very proud to have maintained so many loyal sponsors over many years and I’m delighted to have forged new relationships and to be bringing new names onto the racing scene for 2018.” After racing at Oulton Park, the show moves on to Brands Hatch over Easter before heading for Croft, Anglesey, Brands again (for the American Speed Festival), Donington, Snetterton, Pembrey and a return to Brands for the final showdown in early November.

Horsham Lions Swimarathon raise
Sunday 18 March saw Horsham Lions host the 6th Swimarathon, and the atmosphere was electric! For the very first time, 37 of the 40 teams were able to take part, covering individuals of all ages and numerous organisations, swimming 4,167 lengths in the 25 metre main pool, beating the 2017 record by some distance. This is equal to 104,175 metres or 69.45 metric miles, again beating last year in overall distance. The day was well attended by families, friends, support groups, and those with an interest in the event, who braved the cold tem-
peratures outside. A club spokesperson commented: “Hats off went to the disabled swimmers, who were just remarkable in their efforts to compete with the best of them. A big thank you to the Sunbeam Swimming Club For The Disabled Teams and 2 from Silver Swimmers teams for being there, for taking part and for doing just a great job of it. A big thanks to all 222 swimmers for making it what it was, a great day out and memorable occasion for all of us. “The Swimarathon is always held for charity and this year, another record was the amount of £11,104.40 pounds, was pledged, which is a
record in itself. More than half of this amount will go to our charity for this year’s event – Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice in Arundel, West Sussex and will go some way towards completing the refurbishment program. In addition the remaining sponsorship monies will be distributed between 22 local organisations and charities chosen by the participating teams. “On behalf of Horsham Lions Club, a delighted Lions President David gave thanks to all participating teams, old and new, to their supporters and sponsors for pledging an impressive amount of money for local charity. David
also expressed his thanks to event sponsors, Assurity Consulting and particularly to Suzanne and Lara for their hard work both before and during the day. The same success would not have been achieved without you. “Thanks also goes to nominated charity, Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, with a special commendation to Jayne Todd and the team of volunteers who have worked tirelessly. Without you all, the organising and running of the event would have been much more difficult.” Jayne Todd, Community Fundraiser at Chestnut Tree House said: “The Swimarathon

is always held for charity and this year, another record was the amount of £11,104.40 pounds, being pledgedt. The team at the hospice will use these much needed funds to ensure children and their families are given all the care they need, at the most difficult times in their lives. “Chestnut Tree House provides a wide range of services for children with life shortening conditions, and their families. Currently the annual running costs amount to £3.5 million, of which they receive less than 7% from central government funding. “Horsham Lions Club is helping to provide
this vital care by donating 50% of the proceeds raised by Swimarathon plus tax received through Gift Aid. The other half of receipts go to charities as selected by participating teams. “We are so incredibly grateful to Horsham Lions Club for their ongoing support. We have a few things lined up for 2018, but it’s great to see people in the local community coming up with their own ways to help us celebrate our 15th birthday. “It costs £6,850 every day to provide all our specialist care services – both at the hospice and out in the community in families’ own
homes. “On behalf of everyone at Chestnut Tree House, I would like to say a massive thank you to Horsham Lions Club and all the swimmers who takes part in the Swimarathon for supporting us during 2018. This support is invaluable and the funds raised will make a real difference” A club representative gave a final thanks to members of the Lions Club in Horsham, the Swimarathon Sub Committee and organising teams, for their valuable contribution to the day and event, and added: “Our aim
at Horsham Lions is to continue to work for our community, and beyond, and it would be helpful for other community minded people to join us in this. If you would like to give up just a little of your time to work for your community and have fun in doing it, why not join us? “Being a member of Lions is about serving our community, having fun and socializing, as Swimarathon last Sunday clearly showed.” For more information about Lions in Horsham, please contact Lion David Trowbridge: david@trowbridge.me.uk.

Impressive Horsham shaded in arctic conditions Saturday March 17 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Spencer Men’s 1st XI 4 3 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter When their season got under way Horsham forgot to bury a toad at the crossroads in the dead of Halloween night to ward off bad luck, but although already relegated there was much encouragement to be gained from last Saturday’s visit to south west London to take on Spencer. The game started well with, most unusually, a full contingent of fit Horsham senior players on parade and Horsham scored some good goals, bucking the trend of most of the season. Despite the bitter, biting cold Horsham displayed some excellent hockey skills, Team Manager Al Campbell praising their “fluid passing, great ball speed and enormous composure”, and they showed great fighting spirit after Spencer scored first. James Groves promptly bamboozled the Spencer keeper, equalising with a stunning reverse stick strike. Spencer, though, retook the lead when, following an impressive save from Horsham keeper Andrew Isaacs,
a hit and hope flail ended up in the net. Horsham again responded and drew level when Barney Knights Johnson slotted in Rob Turnbull’s supply. Resuming with the score on two apiece, Horsham were troubling Spencer amid mistakes induced by the challenging weather, but Spencer coped better, adding two more goals, before Sam MacDonald found the net in the dying moments of the game. Al Campbell said: ”There were positives aplenty to take from this game – that’s the best we’ve played since the opening match of the season when we beat Indian Gymkhana 5 nil. We were totally competitive and it was great to see three forwards on the scoresheet – and especially good to finally convert an elusive short corner from a wellworked routine! With two league games and the Sussex Cup Final beckoning there is a new sense of optimism in the squad – we are resigned to relegation, but we’re already planning our fight back and will re-group after dropping a level.” On Saturday in their final home game of the season, Horsham entertain leaders Oxford Hawks (noon push back).
Photo by Nick Evans Saturday March 17 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Reading Ladies 2 4 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Remarkably consistent, Horsham Ladies won promotion back to the National League in style with a big win in arctic conditions at Reading last Saturday, Club Chairman Nick Evans saying: “What the girls have achieved this season is truly fantastic. The young players have played with confidence and maturity far beyond their years – and with a smile on their faces with sky high team spirit. Promotion is no more than their efforts deserve.” The team’s statistics speak for themselves – only once beaten all season – five months ago, winning games for fun with attractive hockey - and by far the best defence in the league – conceding just 15 goals in 21 games with 10 clean sheets. Last Wednesday, in a hastily rearranged game following a weather induced postponement, they travelled to Oxford to play the University, Ladies Club Captain Charlotte (CJ) White telling the District Post: “It was a rush to get the team up there for the 8pm start, both sides were in contention for promotion and played good hockey in a very close game, so it was quite tense. It was 0-0 at half time and Oxford scored
with five minutes to go, but Sam Stares equalised from a rebound from a short corner just before the end. Oxford then hit the post in the last minute! But the 1-1 score was a fair reflection of the game.” On Saturday at Reading, the Ladies were 2-0 up at half time, courtesy of goals from Fran Crossley following Bex Ross’s parried shot before Bex dribbled one in herself. After the break Sam Stares netted from a short corner, putting Horsham 3-0 ahead. Reading responded with two goals, but CJ White put the icing on the cake with Horsham’s fourth. Reacting to promotion, ecstatic Team Manager, Jane Denman said: “What a season we’ve had! The team consisted of a very mixed age range – that was our special ingredient – that, and our great Coach, Chris Bowen: he was outstanding, getting to know the girls, explaining the tactics and getting the very best out of them. The girls understood what they needed to do and executed the plans!” Team Captain Hannah Simpson told us: “We’ve got a well balanced side of youth and experience and the defence has been strong, game after game.” CJ White added: “We had a two year plan – consolidate in the first year and then go for promotion in the second, but we did two years’ work in one! We now wait to hear whether we’ll be in Conference East, as before – or the West (which would involve substantially more travelling).”
Team regular Louisa Denman commented: “This has been a really tough campaign, but it’s fantastic to be back in the National League!” Speaking on behalf the highly impressive group of younger players, Gee Humphreys said: “At the start of the season I never thought we could go up, but we’re a very determined side.” Bex Ross joined the team last September and enthused: “This is a great team to play with – we’ve worked really hard, benefiting from coaching, both individually and as a team.” Stalwart Fran Crossley played at Reading despite a chest infection, saying: “We had so many changes at the start of the season but we soon gelled as a new team and took on board the Coach’s fresh ideas, which were very demanding but excellent. I’m on antibiotics but there was no way that I was going to miss the Reading game. Wow, we’re back in the National League!” The architect of the team’s success, Coach Chris Bowen summed up saying: “A huge credit to all the girls and management for their constant hard work and dedication over the season and for buying into the ideologies put forward. It was a project which we all achieved together and what a huge moment for the club – to be where they need to be – National League!” For their final league game of the season, Horsham Ladies entertain Surbiton on Saturday (13.30) in a top of the table clash.
Boro lead before fading to heavy defeat Saturday March 17 – London 2 South East Pulborough 15 45 Old Alleynians Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough worried Old Alleynians, keeping them at bay to lead at the break, but wilted under sustained OA second half pressure, the visitors going on to win comprehensively. In sub zero temperatures Brad Game got across the line for Boro and when Frazer OliphantHope slotted home a penalty just before half time, Boro led 8-0 and were the happier of the two sides at the interval, hardy supporters hoping for a
memorable Boro win. On the resumption OAs responded strongly with two tries, one converted, but after Frazer had maximised his own try, ten minutes into the second half Boro remained in the lead, albeit with a narrow 15-12 advantage. But, Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders said: “Then the floodgates opened!” With Boro tiring in the appalling conditions, OAs ran in five more tries, creditably converting four times despite the bitter east wind. Already condemned to relegation, Boro, are scheduled to travel to Barking on Saturday, the Essex side failing to put out a side last week, resulting in them being in a negative points situation at the foot of the table, without a single win from 19 fixtures.

Late Grinstead goal deprives Horsham of promising win
YMCA consolidate top spot with steady Hassocks win
Hyde preventing East Grinstead from taking the lead. Then, after Toby House had seen his distant strike safely gathered by Grinstead keeper Dan Smith, Josh Pelling in the Horsham goal had to be alert to negate an attack from the hosts before Charlie Farmer’s header went over the bar. The lively opening salvos continued in similar vein with chances at either end, including Ricardo Thompson firing the ball past the Grinstead goal and the hosts being similarly off target as the first half ended with neither side finding the net. On the resumption Pelling was soon in action to keep out an Alex Gaggin, but it was Horsham who scored first when Curtis Gayler unfurled a stinging volley into the corner of the goal. Grinstead, though, kept pressing and Gaggin soon equalised. Both sides made substitutions and the rival keepers had to be on their mettle to deny opportunities, but Horsham re-took the lead in the 82nd minute when Joe Shelley smashed in Alfie Rogers’ pass. However, lowly Grinstead refused to be beaten, Postance taking advantage of a botched clearance to share the points, the game being brought to an abrupt premature ending with Hyde prone and in agony, his dislocated shoulder awaiting attention from an ambulance crew. This Saturday Horsham, seeking points to elevate them into the top ten, entertain 18th in the table Ramsgate, to whom they lost 1-0 in Thanet in October. Then, on Tuesday (27th) they welcome Ashford United to Lancing, having beaten them 6-0 at home in the FA Cup Qualifier in September, before overturning them again in the league in Kent just before Christmas.

Tuesday March 20 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Div Horsham YMCA 0 2 Chichester City Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After a six week absence from Gorings Mead YM’s return home ended in disappointment – the first half was even, but the second belonged to Chichester, resulting in unaccustomed defeat. This was YM’s first league reverse since 25th November, ending a run of eight consecutive wins, Manager Peter Buckland conceding: “We were beaten by the better side on the night.” YM were without Luke Gedling (calf injury) and new father Sam Schaaf, but Chichester were held in the unremarkable, goal-less first half, neither side really looking like scor-
thing happened at East Grinstead last Tuesday, but this time it was Charlie Postance who salvaged a point for the Wasps, before the game ended early because of a serious-looking injury to Lewis Hyde. Playing again just two days after Sunday’s defeat against Cray Wanderers, much-changed Horsham were soon called upon to thwart an early Wasps’ attack,
ing, despite five corners – two to YM and three to the visitors. Three minutes into the resumption YM’s Tony Garrod fired a long range volley over the bar, but, while YM had the majority of possession up to the break, Chichester dominated the second half. Aaron Jeal thwarted a Chichester attack with his feet, but a defensive error promptly allowed Kaleem Hathem through to score from the right with the first goal against YM for two and a half months. Dave Brown broke through to unleash a screamer, just off target, Jeal’s legs then denied Chichester again, until mid way through the half, a failed clearance permitted Lorenzo Dolcetti free reign and he made no mistake, doubling Chichester’s lead. The visitors then notched up their intensity, firing over ahead of Jeal negating a one on one opportunity and then pulling off a prostrate save. YM endeavoured to cre-
ate chances, but Captain Ash Dugdale’s speculative shot was caught by keeper Anthony Ender and Phil Johnson then shot wide. Time was fast evaporating and after a YM corner came to nought the game ended with Chichester winning 2-0, as they had done on their last visit, when they eliminated YM in the Quarter Final of the RUR Cup. Peter Buckland told the District Post: “The first half ended in stalemate, but we were not fluid tonight. We gifted them two goals and had no real answer to their long ball style of play.” On Saturday YM welcome eighth-placed Peacehaven & Telscombe, then, on Tuesday, they are at Gorings Mead again to play Eastbourne Town in the semi final of the Peter Bentley Cup. Meanwhile, YMCA remain top with 63 points, hotly pursued by Three Bridges (60 points and a game in hand), following their big win against Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday.
Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YM, pursuing the dream of promotion, had not played for three weeks and Hassocks are fighting to avoid relegation, so this was always likely to be a gritty game – and so it proved. But, while it was not pretty to watch, a workmanlike performance from YM secured another three valuable points - with a goal in each half, stretching their run of clean sheet wins to seven games, improving the team’s goal difference in the process. Amid snow flurries, the view from the clubhouse at The Beacon may have suggested a Christmas card scene with the Jack and Jill windmills standing guard on the whitetopped Downs, but the conditions were bone-numbingly cold, with the meagre crowd boosted by travelling YM officials and supporters. Two early YM corners came to nought, but, with increased possession, further opportunities were created and when Tony Garrod went through on his own in the 16th minute he fired home from 30 yards, celebrating his first start for YM. A Hassocks corner was promptly palmed clear, then Dave Brown’s long range effort went wide, Dean Carden’s pass just eluded
Luke Donaldson and a close range Ash Dugdale shot was averted. Corners came and went at either end – two for YM and three for Hassocks, and, while a one goal lead was an inadequate cushion, the hosts looked unthreatening, YM defence confidently dealing with every incursion as the first half ended with them one in front. On the resumption, with trains continuing to rattle past, Phil Johnson – back at his former club – headed past the post from a YM corner before Dave Brown was off target. YM were building up well, but were unable to finish off the chances presented – until, ten minutes before the end the ball was played across to Dugdale to side foot home from ten yards. Busy Hassocks had two second half corners, but the result was never in serious doubt, YM Manager Peter Buckley saying: “We’ve been practising hard, but that doesn’t replicate playing and after such a long lay off it was the sort of game that we might have expected – we were ring rusty and a bit nervy!” YM Captain Ash Dugdale added: “We had difficulty in retaining the ball but we worked hard and it was a good win for us.” Elsewhere, close contenders Three Bridges are second, six points behind YM, but with a game in hand after beating Saltdean United 4-1. Chichester, YM’s Tuesday opponents, played out a goal-less draw against Eastbourne Town.
YMCA U21 tyros push through to Cup Final
Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Not to be outdone by YMCA’s high flying senior side, the U21 team pulled off a commendable cup semi final win against their AFC Uckfield Town counterparts at Gorings Mead last Thursday. The game started with a bang when, in the third minute, live wire YM number 9, Bradley Ross collected Callum Jeal’s pass to fire in at an acute angle from the right. Half an hour later Ross scored again with a firm rebound strike from Jack Frankland’s shot. Right on half time Uckfield took advantage of a goal keeping mishap to reduce the deficit to 2-1 at the break. The second half was tense but YM defence held secure and the team will play East Preston in the Final at the Sussex FA Lancing HQ – provi-
sionally arranged for Tuesday April 10th (7.15). YM Second Team Manager Ryan King told the District Post: “This was a real professional performance from the whole squad, led from the front by Man of the Match Bradley Ross, who ran tirelessly throughout the entire game. A thoroughly pleasing performance from our young guns and everybody at the club eagerly awaits seeing them get their reward in the showpiece Cup Final.”
