Everyman Horsham Now Open! russ bedford Horsham has a new venue in town and I probably don’t even need to tell you who fills it such has the excitement been around this grand opening. However, for those that haven’t heard, Today is official opening of the Everyman Cinema! We were lucky enough to be invited to a pre-opening viewing of the facilities and to be honest the people of Horsham are in for a treat. With a look that gives a nod to the classic picture houses of years gone by whilst catering for a varied audience due to its excellent selection of films, food and drink, Everyman is the type of Cinema you wish you had always known about. From the comfy sofas, through to the table service, the classy decor through to the friendly staff. Everyman group have ensured that you will be impressed from the moment you walk through their doors. With its distinctly classic feel and 1930’s style you may be forgiven for thinking you have stepped back in time but if anything it may actually be more of

an homage to the first Everyman venue. The Everyman in Hampstead was opened as a theatre in 1920 before becoming a cinema on boxing day 1933. Fast forward to the year 2000 when businessman Daniel Broch acquired it and from there the Everyman brand we know today was born. The Horsham site is the 28th in the company portfolio and boasts three screens, with fiftytwo, eighty-seven and ninetyseven capacities they are spacious enough to really feel comfy whilst settling down to watch a film. The excellent table service they have in place feels gives you that extra time to relax, and with these sofas, trust me, you’ll want to use that extra time! The added addition of a covered terrace, a beautiful lounge space and a fantastic bar really help give this cinema the feel of a real “date-night” venue. Other cinemas seem more about processing customers as if on a conveyor belt whereas at Everyman you get the impression you could quite happily spend the whole evening here. With the menu proudly boasting a “Spielburger” that could rival any burger kitchen and a desert menu that caters for all of us with a sweet tooth, it is easy to see why there are so many repeat visits across the everyman estate. Thousands turn out to enjoy special vehicles as they tour Horsham District In celebration of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, on Sunday 24 March, amidst bright spring sunshine, Horsham District welcomed a tour of some 40 special vehicles as they travelled around its market towns and villages, stopping off to form static displays in various locations. Building on the success of the Piazza Italia District Tours in 2016 and 2017, the District Showcase Tour saw up to 40 vehicles, from five different Horsham Town events, form a travelling cavalcade which stopped off in Billingshurst; Pulborough; Storrington; Steyning and Henfield in turn. It also passed through 3 district villages. Managed by Horsham District Council, the tour presented the perfect opportunity for local businesses to open their doors and set out their stalls for the benefit of the many spectators who lined the routes and stopped off in local towns and villages to enjoy the unique spectacle. The Tour presented a broad mix of supercars, classic and muscle cars, police cars and camper vans. The cars represented a selection of those to be seen at Horsham Piazza Italia during the Easter weekend, Horsham’s Great British Weekend in May, PlumJam Air-Cooled VW Rally, Bastille Day Horsham FrenchFest - a car display which is new for 2019 on 14 July and Horsham AmeriCARna in September. Accompanying the Tour was its own travelling band, The Downland Troubadours aboard a 1925 REO Speedwagon from the Les Searle collection which added hugely to the event atmosphere at every stop. For the most part, static display locations were positioned right in the heart of each high street, offering maximum opportunity for visitors to support local businesses. Each of the towns welcomed the tour in their own unique way. Some towns hosted fun activities for all the family such as the Italian market day in Storrington along with extra food stalls and a classic car display by Storrington and District Classic and Sports Car Enthusiasts (SADCASE). There was a French market in

vessels. Jessica’s ceramics are inspired by the natural corrosion of surfaces that have been weathered and broken down from natural erosion such as water, frost and heat. The pieces, once fired, are washed over with oxides to highlight textures made on the surface. Pieces are then fired to 1260℃. Jessica will be showing large and small pieces of her distinctive ceramics. Although there are other craft shows, the Sussex Guild members’ exhibits are always of the highest standard. Visitors can meet the professional designer makers, and discuss how their

work is created, order special commissions and make purchases. The event takes place on 6 and 7 April, 10.00 – 5.00 at Parkside (Horsham WSCC and DC offices), Chart Way, Horsham RH12 1RL. Horsham in Bloom: Hanging Basket Winner of Mother’s Day and Railing Planter Sponsorship competition announced

Horsham in Bloom is gearing up for a spectacular floral summer in our town. Horsham’s Year of Culture 2019 provides the ideal opportunity to make it a delightful place for visitors, shoppers and residents alike. Invitations have gone out to the town’s businesses and organisations, inviting them to sponsor railing planters and hanging baskets throughout the town, and already the response has been encouraging. The railing planters will en-

hance the railway station and the bus station and it is proposed, subject to take-up, that the hanging baskets should adorn the Carfax, Market Square, and West Street. Peter Ind, spokesman for Horsham in Bloom, said: “Sponsoring a planter basket is an effective and original way to highlight your company profile. The name on a logo board will be in front of the people of Horsham for four months over the summer, as well as on the Horsham in Bloom website and Facebook

page. Sponsors will be able to generate publicity for themselves and the feel good factor created by the riot of colour throughout the summer and early autumn will in addition lend eye-catching background support during the Year of Culture 2019”. The cost for a railing planter (£195+VAT) and for a hanging basket (£x175+VAT) includes the container, plants and compost, planting up, siting, watering, maintenance and removal. The location of the basket or planter will be determined by the Parks and Countryside team at Horsham District Council, with whom Horsham in Bloom works in close partnership each year to make this venture a success. Peter added:” Thank you to local businesses for helping to create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere in the town, especially this year to support the Year of Culture 2019. It all makes such a difference to the people in Horsham and its environs who will attend many of special events planned for this summer”. WSCC launches new Tobacco Control Strategy

Smoking costs West Sussex £196 million each year. Now West Sussex County Council has launched its Tobacco Control Strategy in a bid to encourage more people to stop smoking and prevent others from picking

up the habit. The launch of The West Sussex Tobacco Control Strategy 20192022 came as the nation marked No Smoking Day on March 13. A number of organisations from across West Sussex attended

the event at The Regis Centre in Bognor Regis, for a series of workshops looking at how they can work together, through the county’s Smoke-free West Sussex Partnership, to take forward plans over the next three years. As part of the event, health professionals, public health officers and representatives from local authorities heard from Director of Public Health at West Sussex County Council, Anna Raleigh, as well as Public Health Lead for Healthy Lifestyles, Sue Carmichael, and Public Health Analyst, Dr Rich Tyler, who authored the strategy. The conference also welcomed Health and Wellbeing Programme Manager Public Health England South East, Karen Simmonds, and the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, Amanda Jupp. Among some of the many exciting strands of this new strategy are plans for the Maternity Services that will form part of the integrated stop smoking services to try and target mothers who are

unable to kick their habit. This is a particular area of concern, as 9% of pregnant women were known to be smokers when their baby was delivered in 2016/17. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has also signed up to play its part through its Safe and Well Checks, which will see it promote e-cigarettes as a safer alternative to tobacco. The latest figures show there were 7,241 hospital admissions in West Sussex in 2016/17 which were directly related to smoking. This is an increase of 13% since 2011/12 – or an additional 800 admissions a year. West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, Amanda Jupp, said: “The latest figures suggest that fewer people are smoking in West Sussex than ever before, with the smoking prevalence for the county sitting at an all-time low of 12.8%. “And while more and more people are choosing to quit smoking and move on to using e-cigarettes, which are 95% less harmful

than tobacco, smoking remains the single biggest preventable cause of death and ill health in England. “In West Sussex there are estimated to be 87,000 smokers, and, alarmingly, around 7% of 15 year-olds in the county are regular smokers. “The effects of passive smoking have long been acknowledged and understood, but there are far-wider ranging implications for the families of those who smoke. One in four households with a smoker in West Sussex fall below the poverty line. If the cost of smoking was returned to the household, approximately 14,500 people would be elevated out of poverty. “It is time for us to tackle this issue head-on and I am confident that this new strategy points us in the right direction to achieve that.” The details of the full strategy document and action plan can be found here: https://sfws-actionplan.netlify.com/

Pulborough voluntary group back 2019 Great British Spring Clean Campain Pulborough’s Volunteer Litter Group is backing this year’s national Great British Spring Campaign and is already making a big difference in the village. The group of residents formed last December as they were fed up with seeing litter building up in various parts of the village, and the founder, Terry Chriss, was passionate about tidying up the local area. The Horsham District Council Neighbourhood Wardens stepped in to lend a hand and signed the group up to the Council’s AdoptA-Street initiative. This Horsham District Council initiative empowers residents to look after their local area, and supplies all the equipment, including hi-vis vests, black bags and litter pickers. So far, the Pulborough group have filled some 20 black bin bags of rubbish. The group meets on the first Sunday of the month

between 10am and 12pm, and complement the work of the current paid litter pickers in the village. The group, having signed up to the Great British Spring Clean, will be undertaking a special litter pick on Sunday 7 April. To find out more, or to join the group, contact Kate Chriss on 01798 873252. Open spaces society saves bridleway across school grounds The Open Spaces Society* Britain’s oldest national conservation body, has helped to save a 935-metre-long section of public bridleway across the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School, near Horsham in West Sussex. The society’s local correspondent, Paul Brown, and society member Ruth Fletcher (of the Horsham District Cycling Forum) were among the objectors who fought the change at a public inquiry—and won. The school had applied to the highway authority, West Sussex County Council, to divert the popular route across the playing field to a longer, inferior, path around the edge. The council agreed to make a diversion order, using special legislation for moving paths on school land (section 119B of the Highways Act 1980). The principal test which such a diversion order must meet are that it is necessary to move the path to protect pupils and staff from risks to their health and safety. However, the school must be able to demonstrate that it has taken appropriate action to mitigate such risks, and that the diversion of the path would lead to a substantial improvement in that security. Because the order was opposed, by the society, Horsham District Cycling Forum, Horsham

District Council and local residents, the council had to refer it to the Planning Inspectorate to determine on behalf of the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. A public inquiry was held last July. The society argued that even if the bridleway was to be diverted, there would be no substantial improvement in school security and that the number of incidents at the school dating back to 2010 was insignificant. The evidence presented confirmed that the area has a low incidence of crime. Speaking at the inquiry, many residents who were path users confirmed the lack of incidents. Improvements to security have been implemented and more are planned, including an extension to CCTV systems. The inspector, Susan Doran, agreed with the objectors and refused to confirm the order because she did not consider it would result in a substantial improvement in security. In reaching her decision, the inspector also considered the implications of the National Planning Policy Framework, revised in 2018, which seeks the protection and enhancement of public rights of way and to provide better facilities for users. Says Paul Brown: ‘While the Open Spaces Society recognises the need to secure some school

premises by special diversion orders where public paths are close to the buildings or in a high crime area, and the necessary legal tests are met, we are pleased that this proposal to divert the bridleway has been rejected. ‘Not only did the school fail to provide evidence that the diversion was necessary, but also the alternative route would be disadvantageous, particularly to walkers and cyclists. They would have been constrained to a narrow, hedged way with restricted views. having lost the spectacular open space afforded by the existing route.’

Ironmongers set to reopen at Bunces site in Horsham

Gardner and Scardifield have announced they will be opening an Ironmongery, Timber and Decorating store on the site previously occupied by Bunces Horsham (Handyman DIY).

Work has been carried out in the last few weeks to facilitate the reopening as Gardner and Scardifield, with a view to opening as soon as possible. The shop will also stock Secu-

rity, Tools, Plumbing and much more, serving both Trade and Retail customers. Dave Neal of Gardner and Scardifield told The District Post: “We are delighted to say four of the previous, highly experienced, staff will continue to work at the branch, which will help with the transition to Gardner and Scardifield and give existing customers a familiar feel”. As the branch will be part of the wider Gardner and Scardifield branch network, customers will now be able to benefit from a delivery service and trade account facilities that can be used across the whole network, with great customer service at competitive prices. This new branch will help boost the Gardner and Scardifield offering in the Horsham District, including an Electrical Wholesaler in Redkiln Way, Horsham and a Heavyside Builders Merchants in Henfield, which complements the rest of the branch network across Sussex.

Expansion plans announced by Billingshurst marketing agency After celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018, Billingshurst based full-service marketing agency, PMW Communications, is not resting on its laurels and is delighted to announce expansion plans. Having outgrown its current office space on Stane Street, an extension is being built doubling the office size, to allow the agency to accommodate continuing growth and future development plans. The exterior construction of the extension will complement the current building, using materials such as clay tiles and timber cladding. Whereas the interior will fit in with PMW’s creative philosophy by using the latest in office design to develop inspiring meeting spaces which represent an agency in the 21st century. Peter Sutton, Manager

Ali Martin joins Henry Adams “This is the perfect role for me as I’ve got a lot of experience and can support the whole team, in terms of customer service, market appraisals and of course, selling homes,” she added. “And we’ve got some brand new developments coming on stream this year which will be exciting.” Within her first week of joining Henry Adams, Ali had already received her first offer for a property from keen buyers. “It’s already starting to bubble through and so many of the properties and the clients are so familiar, it’s like coming home.” One of the region’s most respected estate agents, Alison Martin, has joined Henry Adams in Horsham. Ali is well known in Horsham having worked in the local area in estate agency for 14 years. She became an estate agent back in 2002, initially as a Saturday assistant carrying out viewings, and after two years with a media company, she took on a full time role at Hamptons rising through the ranks to become Senior Associate. Early last year Ali was transferred to their Reigate branch but she was keen to return to her Horsham roots. “I really missed Horsham and wanted to get back to focusing on clients locally,” Ali said. “I live three minutes from Horsham town centre so now I get to sell houses once again in an area which I know and love.” “Henry Adams was the only company in the town which I was interested in working for. In all my years in agency, they are the one company you’d never hear any complaints about, people liked the service they were getting, and if Henry Adams were involved in a chain, I was confident that they knew what they were doing and had a high level of professionalism.” Ali is now Assistant Manager at Henry Adams, Horsham, where she is working alongside Manager Nick Hapgood and his team.

Richard Town, Partner, said, “We are delighted to welcome Ali to the team. She had a lovely manner and a professional approach, a great combination when it comes to helping people to move home successfully. Her experience is second to none in the area and I’m sure she’ll be a great asset to Henry Adams’s clients, both now and in the future.” For friendly, helpful and professional advice, Ali Martin can be contacted at Henry Adams in Carfax on 01403 253271 or email horsham@henryadams.co.uk.

Director of PMW Communications, commented: “We initially moved to our Billingshurst barn in 2000 and have extended the office once already, by nearly doubling the original size in 2012, but with the business continuing to go from strength to strength, we’ve outgrown the space again. We all love the location and were loath to move away from the area, so we’re delighted to add an extension to not only fit our strategic growth plans, but to also give us a fresh new space to build on our 25 years of experience. “The marketing industry is often fast-paced, especially in the digital arena, so the redevelopment means we can expand our team of marketing experts and grow the services we can offer our clients.” Completion is expected to be Summer 2019.

‘I Never Had A Chance, They’d Made Up Their Mind About Me From The Moment They Opened That Door And Found Me Bawling On The Step.’ A small town in Georgia: a nameless Orphan returns to the place where he was raised, hoping that he can cauterize the wound that has been festering in him since he

was a child. His friend ‘Patience’ is brought along, on the grounds that she might find some sense of closure. When they bump into their old Caretaker who has information about their dark past, Orphan’s true motives start to become clear and Patience begins to lose control. Are sins ever forgiven? Or do sins simply beget more sins? Orphan is Black Dog Production’s first feature length play and Russell Eccleston’s third piece of writing for the company. Black Dog are excited to bring Orphan to The Hawth Studio, co-produced by the wickedly talented Beyond The Horizon Theatre Company. Performance: Monday 29 April 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio, Crawley. Tickets: £15 (Discounts: £12), available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www. hawth.co.uk

Hancock’s Half Hour

TONY HANCOCK fans will be in their element this April as the first ever UK tour of the classic radio comedy Hancock’s Half Hour comes to The Capitol, Horsham. In 1954, Tony Hancock burst onto the airwaves of the BBC Light Programme with a comedy show unlike anything the British public had heard before. Playing a less successful version of himself and surrounded by a cast of fellow comedy greats including Sid James, Hattie Jacques and Kenneth Williams, Hancock’s Half Hour was one of the first programmes in the genre we now know as sitcom. Written by young up-and-comers Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, who later went on to create Steptoe and Son, Hancock’s Half Hour redefined radio comedy and has had people laughing non-stop for the past 65 years. Now, 65 years after its first broadcast, Apollo Theatre Company, who recently produced UK tours of classic radio comedies, The Goon Show and Round the Horne, bring the show to the stage for the first time. Producer and director, Tim Astley said: “Hancock’s Half Hour was one of the greatest comedy shows of all time and it is truly an honour to be able to bring it to the stage. We are so used to sitcoms as a part of the comedy landscape these days that it is hard to imagine a time without them and to appreciate just

how ground-breaking the show was when it came along in 1954. Tony Hancock’s genius ‘put-upon’ persona had such an influence on so many great comedy characters from Basil Fawlty to David Brent and it cannot be underestimated quite how much he helped shape comedy as we know it today. “Being a radio comedy show, these characters and their world largely exist in people’s imaginations and this show, which recreates the BBC recording studio of the 1950s, gives audiences a chance to see them brought to life like never before and will create a unique experience for fans both old and new.” The show stars Dead Ringers impressionist James Hurn as Tony Hancock and Colin Elmer reprising his role from Round the Horne as Kenneth Williams, alongside a cast of brilliant actors who will bring to life the stars of yester-year who may be gone, but certainly not forgotten. So come and take a trip to 23 Railway Cuttings, East Cheam to join ‘the lad himself’ and his motley crew for three classic episodes of this hilarious show. Performance: Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 April at 7.30pm, The Capitol Theatre, Horsham. Tickets: Available from The Capitol Box Office: 01403-750220 and online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com

Loneliness and isolation highlighted in 2 fantastic plays by Tim Fifield

Davey Pearson

Managing Director

Local Writer, Producer, Director and Actor Tim Fifield took to the stage last week to present to us his two latest offerings in the world of drama. The Truth and The flats focus largely on how we have become disconnected from the world around us despite being more connected than ever before. The Truth sees Toyah played by Lauren Morley,, tracking down the Dad she never met. After finding a Birthday card signed by ‘Dad’ she soon realises that the handwriting in the card doesn’t match that of the Dad she grew up knowing. The ever reliable source of information, Facebook, leads her to track down her biological Father and soon a meet up is scheduled. Mark, played by Fifield, attempts to connect with his daughter but struggles to shake off the awkwardness such a situation presents, he explains as best he can that he had to put his Daughter up

for adoption following the death of her Mother after suffering severe Postnatal depression. It is a tense roller coaster of emotion as both battle their insecurities but the tension is eased as Toyah references that her own Son is approaching his 2nd birthday. We close as we began with Mark cleaning his flat, listening to his 80’s pop but this time preparing to greet his Daughter and her Son for a Birthday gathering ,2 candles and a cake at the ready. The Flats focuses on eleven individuals living in the same tower block, all so preoccupied with life that they never have time for each other. Cleverly including the link between Lauren and Mark from the previous play, they take much more of a secondary role this time as the focus is on how fractured the environment is. If only they took time for each other, maybe those fractures could heal.... In an area where loneliness, spousal abuse, acrophobia and gang related peer pressure are rife, each character could benefit from engaging with the other. With a such a tense group the humour shines through courtesy of the lift engineer who injected a

certain comic relief with his light hearted lines. The story takes a turn when Billy played by James Macauley disappears, a largely unassuming character who’s absence goes unnoticed by the rest of the group. After a while the other residents begin to wonder if all is alright with their neighbour. The finding of a key leads them to Billy’s flat where each character discovers a letter addressed to them. Each letter is read aloud and it soon becomes clear that Billy has been listening to and understanding everyones problems and worries. Through this they collectively appear to appreciate each other and we close with the whole group together, as a community, less the divide that was between them. Two fantastically written and performed plays that leave you wanting more, they both touched on current and serious subject matters that certainly resonated with me personally, at times it was almost as if they had been written solely for my benefit. Folk Rock Pioneers Steeleye Span at The Capitol

‘Space Oddity’. ‘Suspicious Minds’. ‘Pinball Wizard’. ‘Whole Lotta Love’. ‘Come Together’ 1969 could easily be described as being a vintage year for music, the end of a decade that changed the world and the introduction to one that would prove equally inspirational. It would also see the birth of a band that would start as an idea to electrify traditional music and would go on to become one of the most enduring stories in the folk rock world and beyond. Over the past fifty years, Steeleye Span have come to define the concept of English folk rock - taking it from the world of small clubs into the charts, concert halls and festivals around the globe. The story of their career has included incredible moment after incredible moment - taking Latin carol ‘Gaudete’ onto

Top Of The Pops, recording with David Bowie and Peter Sellers, showering their audiences with pound notes, scoring a top five hit with ‘All Around My Hat’, touring UK arenas with Status Quo, reuniting virtually all their members for a famous 25th anniversary show, and entering their fifth decade as creatively inspired and active as ever - including the acclaimed Wintersmith album with Sir Terry Pratchett. Featuring some of the most famous names in folk music from down the years (Martin Carthy, Tim Hart, Bob Johnson, John Kirkpatrick, Peter Knight, Ken Nicol, Liam Genockey), the band has perhaps been most identified with Maddy Prior - one of the most distinctive voices in British music. Helping found the band with her musical partner Tim Hart, she has steered Steeleye through their various incarnations, as well as managed a successful solo career and a number of regular collaborations with the likes of June Tabor and The Carnival Band. Steeped in the mythology and history of the British Isles - and beyond - her lyrics have retold some of the most notable stories in the tradition. Tales of

love, tragedy, injustice, murder, revenge and redemption - all have come to personify the band’s musical sound, a marrying of folk tunes with the finest in rock instrumentation. As they celebrate their milestone anniversary, Steeleye Span show no signs of slowing down. Releasing seven studio and four live albums since the turn of the century, their current seven piece line-up ranks as one of the strongest of their long history and features John Kirkpatrick’s son, Benji from Bellowhead, amongst others. Starting the year with a return to Ireland for three shows, including St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, they will tour the UK in March and April - once more revisiting famous moments and hidden gems from their career. This will lead to the release of their 24th studio album Est 1969, later in the year and another chapter in one of the most famous stories in modern music. Performance: Thursday 18 April, The Capitol, Horsham. Tickets: Available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220.

‘Classic Victorian façade, superb newly constructed accommodation’

Behind the classic Victorian façade of this detached family home, is something truly impressive. A superb newly constructed accommodation includes a stunning garden aspect kitchen/ diner with double bi-fold doors to the garden, among other delights. The authentic Victorian front elevation remains in all its glory giving a welcoming first impres-

sion and our vendor is still finalising the side elevation render, with work due to start post winter. There is driveway parking and gated access to the rear garden and garage. Access into the man accommodation is gained to the right hand side elevation into a spacious entrance vestibule, the perfect venue to welcome visitors with abundant space for coats and shoes as well as

a ground floor shower room with W.C. In turn, double part glazed doors open into the expansive family room; which is an atmospheric contemporary space. It can easily be imagined to while away a winter afternoon with music or a decent book, conversely to entertain in summer alike, in a really adaptable area of the house. The cosy sitting room has a burner with open fields beyond the road to the front aspect windows. The drawing room is another front aspect room, currently used as a study and music room it is

nice for a house of this stature to enable rooms closed off from the open plan areas. The biggest feature of the ground floor though, is the bright, airy kitchen diner with views through the garden to the open fields beyond. If large family meals are the highlight of your time, this is absolutely perfect. There is a utility room housing the Mega flow system and other appliances. There are views beyond the rear garden to fields; which is a priceless and heart grabbing characteristic. Stairs rise from the family room to four bedrooms, the family bathroom and one en-suite. There are two front and two facing the rear, all of decent proportions, three doubles and a single. The bathroom is arranged in a T-shape with low level W.C, wash hand basin & panel enclosed bath with shower over and fitted screen. The ensuite shower room with W.C serves an exquisite bedroom with rear and side dual views over the open outlook, although not the largest room this may be contested for. From an inner lobby stairs rise to a spacious top floor landing with feature wall paper detail and offering a door into the master bedroom with front and rear Velux windows. There are recesses and storage into eaves, which give the room its individuality. There is an en-suite with his and hers wash basins and double shower with further Velux windows. The rear garden is mainly laid to lawn with a patio and there is a tandem garage outbuilding, which could easily become a home working environment, gym or annex. Clearly this extensive development by our vendors is nearly complete but is offered to the market giving the new incumbent the scope to choose floor coverings and colour schemes for the rendering and so on should you so wish. wish. Horsham Hockey Club celebrates 50 years Horsham Hockey club are about to celebrate the end of their 50th season this weekend! To mark the occasion, they’ll be celebrating in style this Saturday with their biggest ever end of season dinner, with 143 tickets already sold! “The Hockey Club would like to say a big thank you to Horsham Sports Club for hosting the party”, which will require the members bar to be closed for the night, as over 40% of the Hockey Club join in the festivities. Horsham Sports Club sends a warm welcome to the Hockey Club this Saturday, as they party the night away, with the fabulous all female band the Festival Foxes playing live!

Strong back to back win for the Ladies team Saturday March 23 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Bedford Ladies 1 3 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham reprised their 3-1 win against Bedford at home in October, punishing the hosts with a well fashioned victory. Bex Ross scoring in the opening minutes, Ladies Club Captain Charlotte “CJ” White telling the District Post: “It was excellent to get the early goal – it really set us up and we played good passing hockey.” Elle Blakesley scored Horsham’s

second, giving them a two goal unchallenged cushion at the break. Bex Ross scored again in the second half and it might have got even better, but for an unaccustomed penalty flick miss. Bedford did manage to get on the score sheet, but Horsham finished undisputed winners, CJ White adding: “This was a good all round team performance, especially as it can be difficult to produce your best against teams of a lower standard – and the pitch was slow and sticky, too, which didn’t help! But, everybody in the squad benefited from plenty of pitch time. On Saturday - our final scheduled league match of the season (at Broadbridge Heath

with a 2pm push back) – we have a big game, against Sevenoaks. They are a strong side to whom we lost heavily in September, but if we can avenge that we should finish sixth or seventh, possibly ending up in the promotion playoffs.” Horsham Ladies’ teams did well last Saturday, Emily White – CJ’s sister – saying: “All of our sides were unbeaten, the seconds won again, with the firsts the only team to concede a goal!” Ahead of Saturday’s last round of matches, Hampstead & Westminster top the table with 44 points, two more than Wimbledon, those two London sides being well clear of third placed Cambridge City.

Men’s challenging league season ends in defeat March 23 - South League – Premier – Division 2 London Academicals 2 0 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter The visit of Horsham Men to Bermondsey, under the shadow of Millwall’s famous Den, for their final league game ended disappointingly after the hosts scored early, Match Day Coach Brian Humphreys telling the District Post: “We were caught napping, but the game was far more even after that and we held them to 1-0 at the break. In the second half we had opportunities and hit the post, but they scored a breakaway goal to seal our fate. If we had taken our chances it might have been different! But, we gave debuts to three of the Club’s aspiring young players – Harry Beard, Joe Tait, Solly Woodhhall – and it was good to blood them, emphasising the depth of talent at the Club.” Team

Manager Al Campbell added: “The teams had nothing to play for but pride, but, despite us taking a small squad, there was much to be liked about the way the team worked their way back into contention. By half time we were dominating possession and taking control and this continued for the first 20 minutes of the second half, but the one obstacle that we couldn’t surmount was the Accie’s giant keeper – he shut us out of the reverse fixture at Horsham and did the same here!” Horsham finished 10th - above Slough and Woking - at the end of a challenging, transitional season, a serious injury robbing them of the services of their newly signed goal keeper, with different replacements standing in before a permanent new keeper, the outstanding Joe Elgar, arrived. And, until Brian Humphreys stepped in the team was without a regular Match Day Coach. Nevertheless, they often played well, but sometimes, frustratingly, lapses in concentration saw them surrender a lead and go

on to lose games that they might have won. However, the undoubted highlight was the richly deserved home defeat of runaway league champions Guildford, Horsham being the only team to beat the Surrey side in the 22 game league programme. Drag flick specialist Sean Pearcy scored 15 of Horsham’s tally of 49 goals this campaign. For next season, England Hockey are planning major changes to the leagues with a view to making the itinerary more travel friendly and details are awaited regarding the impact that this might have on Horsham teams. Meanwhile, Horsham’s season is not quite done – on Saturday April 13 they are in the Sussex Cup Final at Hurstpierpoint College (South Pitch, 15.45), taking on Eastbourne, looking to make it four consecutive cup victories. Horsham Ladies 1s and 4s will also be appearing, competing in their respective Finals on the big day for Horsham Hockey Club.

Pulborough win last home game in style Saturday March 23 – London 3 South East Pulborough 52 19 Old Williamsonians Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter In their last home game of the season Pulborough treated their large crowd of supporters to a commanding win, posting their second half century score line of the season and notching up a hat trick of victories in the process. In December Boro lost narrowly to Old Wills in Rochester, so revenge was sweet. In perfect conditions, Boro scored straight from the whistle, Nick Haynes getting under the posts, converted for an immediate 7-0 lead. However, OWs promptly latched on to a Boro handling error to reduce the deficit with a try of their own. But, Boro immediately responded with a breakaway try from Brad Game - the third try of the match in the opening 10 minutes. Joe Serna then finalised an impressive Boro build up for the team’s third try, Haynes immediately embarking on a long, rapid run for an excellent solo try, converted by skipper Frazer Oliphant-Hope, giving Boro 28 points and a bonus point mid way through the first half. Boro, though, were not quite done, Game emulating Haynes with a 50 metre dash, putting Boro 33-7 up at the break.

On the resumption OWs big pack dominated to secure a push over try, which only served to rejuvenate Boro, Serna completing a team try, the extras providing a 40-14 lead. The pace eventually tired the combatants and injuries reduced OWs to 14 on the field, Oliphant-Hope retaining enough energy to burst through for Boro’s seventh try, before Serna completed a memorable hat trick. To their credit, OWs never gave up and they were rewarded with the final try, Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders telling the District Post: “This was a clinical performance and a very fitting send off at the end of my seven year stint with the Club, leaving the team in a better place that when I was greeted with a 69-3 defeat back in September 2012! I am very confident that if the boys can keep improving their numbers at training and sort out their availability for both home and away fixtures then next season will be even better with promotion a genuine possibility!” Fifth-placed Pulboro end their season with two away trips – on Saturday they go to Old Dunstonians, whom they beat at home in December and then on April 6th they travel to former Sussex powerhouse, but now bottom of the table, Lewes, who Boro narrowly overcame at Freelands on the first Saturday of the season.

Josh Fleming takes over as Roffey Chairman Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At the recent Roffey Cricket Club AGM, Josh Fleming was installed as Chairman, taking over from Mark Hamilton, who had filled the role for six years, Mark telling the District Post: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time as Chairman, during which we won the league four times, and the Sussex Cup for the first time – like Alex Ferguson, I know when to stop! Seriously, being Chairman deserves more time, which I don’t always have. I’ll still be around the club and will enjoy watching the team. Meanwhile, Josh is an excellent choice – he’s got his finger on the pulse with cricket and with his accountancy hat on he’ll add another dimension.” Roffey skipper Matt Davies added: “Josh’s appointment is a good move for the club, he’ll be a great replacement for Hammy. Josh is young and has had cap-

taincy experience, leading our Premier League team for three years, including our first two championships in 2014 and 2015. He knows which way we need to go and we’ll work well together.” Josh Fleming’s strengths were identified by Roffey at an early age – he first captained the side as a 16 year old and told us: “I just want Roffey to continue being successful. Hammy will be a hard act to follow, but I have a good relationship with Davo and am really looking forward to working with him.” Josh played for Roffey firsts last season, and has figured in some memorable match-winning and match-saving partnerships with his brother, George but how much cricket he will be playing this campaign remains to be seen. Meanwhile, nagging bowler George Fleming replaces Josh as Vice Captain, enthusing: “We’ll be even stronger this year and are all raring to go - I can’t wait for the season to start!”

Horsham steam on with league and cup triumph

Photos by Clive Turner Saturday March 23 London 2 SE League Match & Bob Rogers Sussex Cup Double Header Horsham 41 17 Haywards Heath Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter With a league promotion play off place at stake, coupled with an appearance in the Bob Rogers Cup Final – which Horsham has won for the last five years – there was much to play for at Hammerpond Road last Saturday and Horsham

did not disappoint the large and vociferous crowd, who were buoyed by Mike Watts’ converted try in the opening three minutes. After Heath missed out on a penalty opportunity, Horsham scored again, through Johnny Goward, Tom Johnson again converting, giving Horsham an unchallenged 14-0 advantage with just a quarter of an hour gone. Play then became more level, Heath eventually posting a try of their own before Johnson kicked a penalty, followed by a Vince Everitt try – unconverted

- for Horsham to lead 22-5 at the break. Heath, though, came back out in fighting mode, promptly reducing the deficit with a maximised try resulting from a close quarter ruck. However, Horsham soon regained the initiative, Declan Nwachukwu powering over, boosted by Johnson’s subsequent kick. Nwachukwu then scored again, on the hour mark, this time Johnson’s normally reliable boot proving fallible. Yet, there was no room for complacency, Heath getting over the line from a quick tap, but it was a momentary scare, Jack Osgood adding Horsham’s final try, which with Johnson’s tight angle conversion, gave Horsham their relatively comfortable, but memorable 41-17 victory. Post match Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “The prospect of playing a confident Heath team is always a challenge and today was no different. Our set piece worked well with the scrum dominant and the lineout securing good ball in attacking positions. Physical aggression, particularly with the line speed and tackle, stifled any Heath attacking aspirations, which, when all combined, meant we had control for most of the game. In a team full of strong performances, Kyle Fairs, Vince Everitt, Jack Osgood, Mike Watts, Declan Nwachukwu – who notched up his 28th try of the season during the game – and Tom Johnson all warrant special mention, with the Man of the Match award going to Jamie Redmayne for his leadership and excellence in defence and attack all afternoon.” With two league games remaining, Beckenham stay top with 86 points and Horsham second on 80. On Saturday Horsham travel to fourth-placed Old Colfeians, looking to avenge both the narrow home defeat at their hands in December and elimination from the cup by a larger margin last month. Then, for the final league match of the season, Horsham return home on April 6th to welcome Maidstone (10th), whom they despatched 50-23 in Kent in the first week of the campaign.

U16 Table Tennis team are national champions

Tanbridge House School’s U16 Boys Table Tennis team were crowned national champions at the Butterfly National Schools Team Championship, following an incredible performance at the competition finals on Saturday 23 March. The team won all three of their

matches to take home the LeachCarrington Cup. Their final match was against Carlton Le Willows from Nottingham, which they won 6-2. This followed on from 7-1 victories over both Ernest Bevin College (Wandsworth) and St Mary’s College (Hull).

The players were taken to a deciding set in seven of their individual matches and won them all - a noteworthyachievement. Jacob Evans, one of the winning players from Tanbridge House, said: “The chemistry of the team was there – we worked together a lot and cheered each other on.” Kristian Hunt, PE Teacher, said: “This is fantastic news, I’m delighted for all the team members and their families, who have supported them all the way. What a wonderful achievement.” The winning team was made up of Zach Hodges, Oli Michell, Harry Yip, Charlie Graham-Adams and Jacob Evans. Ex student Will Michell, who now studies at Collyer’s, helped to coach the team to victory. Photo (L to R): Zach Hodges, Oli Michell, Harry Yip, Charlie Graham-Adams, Jacob Evans.

Cagey draw but Horsham still on promotion trail

Saturday March 23 – The Bostik League – South East Division Horsham 0 0 Ashford United Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The combatants negated each other in this top of the table clash at Lancing last Saturday. With the two teams cheek by jowl in pursuance of a coveted playoff place, understandably neither wished to concede advantage, and as a result of the goal-less draw Horsham with 59 points drop one place to third, on level pegging with new runner up, Hastings United, by

dint of a three goal difference after the East Sussex side despatched Three Bridges. Cray Wanderers remain runaway leaders, while Ashford United are now fourth, one point behind Horsham. Haywards Heath are fifth on 56, both Ashford and Heath having a game in hand. Although with a chequered history of decline and re-launches, Ashford is a very long-standing, historic club with a proud record in the FA Cup, ex England Manager Roy Hodgson being one of their famous past players, but, at Culver Road they were eyeing the future, albeit cannily keeping Horsham at bay, especially as the Hornets had

beaten them 3-2 with a last gasp goal at The Homelands in November. Ashford began positively, pushing forward with their prolific scorer Danny Parish drawing an early reaction save from Josh Pelling, the ball taking some time to clear, following which Harvey Sparks had to be alert to stop a further incursion. With Horsham struggling to get into the game, Ashford kept probing until, with almost 30 minutes gone, Chris Smith created an opportunity, but Rob O’Toole’s strike was safely gathered by Sam Mott in the Ashford goal. Skipper Sam Corne, Ashford’s other highscoring danger man, then tested Pelling just before the half time whistle, neither side having broken the deadlock. in changed formation Horsham looked more challenging after the break, soon appearing to have gone ahead, Chris Smith finishing off the rebound from Lee Harding’s volley, only for the goal to be disallowed, adjudged offside. Smith subsequently got through to try a tight-angled shot, but Mott was not unduly troubled. Horsham then earned a corner, but Shelley headed over, ending the Hornets’ scoring hopes. The second half had been far quieter for Ashford, however, they did have a late possibility, but Pelling calmly completed a routine block, the game ending goal-less. With five games remaining, including long trips to 16th placed Herne Bay and Guernsey, who hover just above bottom club Greenwich Borough, Horsham play their penultimate game at their temporary Lancing home on Saturday – against mid table Sevenoaks Town, whom they beat 2-1 at Greatness Park back in August. Meanwhile, the club are delighted with progress at their excellent new Hop Oast ground – with the artificial pitch laid, the stands up and the substantial clubhouse substantially complete, the long awaited new facility really is going to be something to celebrate, especially if it goes hand in hand with Horsham’s promotion, crowning a superb achievement for the Hornets.

YMCA extend long unbeaten run with another win Saturday March 23 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 2 0 Eastbourne United Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was not a game of two halves. It was a game of the half of one half – the second half of the second half. Eastbourne United is desperate for every point in a bid to avoid relegation, while YM are eager to further their chance of promotion – see below. So, this was always likely to be a challenging encounter - until YM eventually broke the deadlock to end United’s resistance. The game started in frantic style, Eastbourne heading wide and unfurling a shot past the top left of the YM goal. Dean Bown then invaded down the right, but Tony Nwachukwu was unable to get a shot in, before Luke Gedling burst through, only to be marginally off target. After YM had got away with a pair of botched clearances they earned a corner, but Tom Gilbert’s header was wayward. With little to choose between the two sides an Eastbourne free kick looped over the bar, followed by their corner being punched clear. YM, though kept pressing, resulting in two corners, a free kick just outside the area and a long range Bown shot testing the Eastbourne keeper. The visitors also created a late opportunity, but the first half ended goal-less. The game resumed with corners at either end, but YM were beginning to exert more control, yet Aaron Jeal had to make a one-handed catch at full stretch to deny Eastbourne. Then, after substitutions, YM eventually took the lead through Jack Hartley mid way through the half. Four minutes later Bown scored from close quarters and that really was it – Eastbourne kept further YM forays

at bay, but apart from a wild swing at a ball by former Gorings Mead striker Sam Schaff, Eastbourne did not threaten again, YM going on to win comfortably enough, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “They were a big side, we had to change our format three times to overcome them – and we finally got it right! Dan Evans coming on changed things, he gave us width. We’ve got a big game on Saturday, but we’ve gone 10 league games undefeated, winning eight and if we keep racking up the points then we can do no more.” Chichester City won on Saturday taking them to 82 points, while YM remain second - with 72. Third placed Newhaven drew, placing them on 69, but with a game in hand. Haywards Heath are fourth with 68, Chichester, YM and Heath having five to play. Contrary to previous suggestions, there are no playoffs in this league, leaving what might happen in terms of promotion unclear. Normally, only one team goes up, but at the end of this season it could be two, because Dartford based Thamesmead Town folded in the tier above, The Bostik League South East Division – Horsham’s current league. However, the vacancy created by Thamesmead’s demise might be filled by another Kent team, maintaining the status quo. The situation is further complicated by the possibility that if Chichester is promoted – as looks virtually certain – then, in view of their location, they could be placed in a western division, which might not appeal. Also, it has been said that Newhaven might not wish to go up because of the expense involved, including additional travelling. However, the penalty for refusing to accept promotion has been relegation, by up to two levels. The situation is doubly intriguing because YM travel to Newhaven this Saturday.

Heath frustrate ambitious Newhaven Saturday March 23 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Newhaven 0 0 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter For the second week running Broadbridge Heath showed great determination to thwart upper table opposition, confirming, if that is really necessary, how well the side has progressed since their somewhat disappointing final position last season. High-flying Newhaven have been in contention for much of the season, so to stop them scoring, holding them to a draw at the Trafalgar Ground was a creditable performance, especially as the Dockers had overturned Heath at

the Leisure Centre earlier in the season, when Heath regarded them as their most impressive opponent to date. Heath were still without their injured skipper Tom Howard Bold - Ollie Moore and Dean Wright also being unavailable, leaving vacancies on the bench. Heath put down an early marker with sustained possession, earning corners and set pieces, but they were just unable to convert the chances created. However, Newhaven gradually worked their way into the game, testing Heath with a succession of corners, but they, too, were off target, both sides finding the uneven pitch difficult. With half time beckoning Heath’s Martyn Flack headed just wide, neither side managing to break the deadlock before the interval. Seeking a win to keep them challenging at the top of the table,

as anticipated Newhaven resumed with greater intensity, but when a short range free kick presented an opportunity Heath keeper Kieron Thorp made light work of it. Heath, though, responded, suggesting that they might cause an upset, but Jamie Taylor’s header evaded the goal, leading to disappointment over what might have been. The draw leaves Heath in sixth position, nine places higher than their final standing last season. They have five matches remaining, including an always competitive local derby against Horsham YMCA at the Leisure Centre on Easter Saturday. The other four fixtures – two at home and two away – are all against lower table opposition, beginning with a visit to 15th placed Langney Wanderers on Saturday.
