It’s Piazza Italia time Horsham’s signature Piazza Italia event is ready to roll this Easter weekend with a host of unique attrractions for all ages and interests. Bikes and Scooters Good Friday brings a welcome return to a massive display of Italian bikes, featuring a fascinating cross section of Ducati models and many other brands. (Bike Display in East Street from 12.30pm). The Bullseye Scooter Club will host a terrific display of Italian scooters, alongside their friends at The Bear pub, in Market Square on Easter Monday from 10am. Children’s and family activities Indoors: We have lots of indoor activities this year, should the weather not be so kind to us. On Good Friday and Easter Monday, there is slot car racing with Horsham Rotary at the Council’s Parkside building – just £1 a go with circuits for both novice and more confident ‘drivers’. We have not just one or two, but three F1 Simulators at Parkside this year. Pirelli have brought their replica F1 car as part of the Kwik Fit Road Safety Zone, and Altitude Events have their two simulators inside the Parkside foyer, with one on one challenge racing on Good Friday, and a fastest lap time competition, with a very special prize from Premier GT

as part of their Race Paddock on Easter Monday. (Both just £2 a go, or equivalent donation to Pirelli). Listen to the Mad Music Machine by STEAMCademy, as it produces tunes using samples of all your favourite supercar sounds. Not part of Piazza Italia, but a fun edition to Easter Saturday, there will be Messy Easter activities for younger children, thanks to Horsham Churches Together in Swan Walk near Toy Barnhaus. Outdoors: There are Fun Fair rides on the Forum by Bensons (Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday), and free Pizza making with Dominos on the Carfax (Good Friday). Up at the Parkside offices, there will be face painting and ice cream there, both days, and Jumpin’ Jockeys (Good Friday), plus child’s Go Karts (Easter Monday). The Springboard Project have Easter Arts and Crafts at Parkside, and huge local favourite ‘Tom Foolery’ will be down in the Carfax between 2 and 4pm on Easter Monday. Oh, and we can’t forget the eggcellent Horsham Rotary Easter Bunny Hunt, which starts on Good Friday and hops and skips with you around town through the rest of the two week Easter Holidays. Continued from front page. Classic Cars Piazza Italia has always strived to present a range of Italian cars that exhibit style and grace over muscle. 2018 will be no exception, with some superb examples of Alfa Romeos, Fiats, and Maseratis, over the two days. A speciality of Horsham Piazza Italia is its annual celebration of the Mini, and its starring role in the Italian Job films. 53 mini owners have booked to take part in a special Parkside display on Good Friday, which serves to promote their next year’s triple anniversary (60 years of the Mini, 50 years of the Italian Job film, 30 years of the ItalianJob.com charity). Premier GT’s race paddock at Parkside, on Easter Monday, promises a very special selection of rare RS Fords that will also put many in a nostalgic frame of mind. Driving experiences Piazza Italia friends, The Sporting Bears club, return, providing passenger ‘Dream Rides’, in return for donations to be shared amongst this year’s supported children’s charities. Check out the Sporting Bears cool wall to book your ride at the Brock Taylor offices, at the corner of East Street and Market Square, from 10am each day. (Prices start at £30 and vary according to car excitement value). If virtual racing is your thing, Parkside has three F1 simulators both days, with Premier GT offering a track day for the fastest lap time on the Monday. While there, the Rotary slot cars offer another opportunity to test those competitive driving skills on a new digital circuit. Entertainment With more than a nod and a wink to Italian culture, Piazza Italia hosts the fabulous voices of opera star, Jo Appleby, the singing chef, Jon Nulty (both in the Carfax on Good

Friday), and our very own Gondolier (in the Carfax and around town on Good Friday). Mr Pavarotti, the Oyster Opera duo, and a walkabout Supercar stilt walker, join Monday’s bill, along with local youngsters Terra Nova and Young HAODS. Children’s favourite Tom Foolery supports the Springboard Project in the Carfax between 2 and 4pm. This year’s entertainment programme sponsors are local media partners The District Post and Spirit FM Radio. Davey and Anna will be sharing compering duties over the weekend and presenting live streaming video coverage and previews of the event’s content at key points along the way. Video partners Silvertip Films and Toby Phillips Photography will be helping to capture the essence of Piazza Italia for some post event roundups. Food & Drink Horsham has a superb range of eating and drinking options year round thanks to its huge assortment of grocery stores, delis, restaurants, cafes, tea rooms and bars. Horsham’s favourite Italian Market, Italia in Piazza returns to Carfax, directed by original owner Simon Faro, and now in partnership with Horsham’s signature Italian café and Italian food specialist Giovanni’s & Panino. Of course, Horsham Markets have given the town a strong reputation for its street food providers of its own, and two if its finest will be serving both days - Sussex Street Food of the Year winner, Garlic Wood Farm (fresh pasta and roast porchetta) and Pig & Jacket (burgers and brisket with an Italian twist and breakfasts if you arrive early). Add to this, both days wood fired Pizza’s, the Hepworth’s brewery tent with their Piazza Italia beer, and a range of sweeter options from Vice Puddings, Thomas Cook-

ies and more. The Italian Market will also be presenting a range of complementary regional Italian wines and the Pop- Up Piaggio Prosecco bar returns, injecting a little fizz to proceedings. Easter Markets are being presented by Horsham General Market (Bishopric Good Friday/Easter Saturday) and Horsham Markets by Food Rocks, plus Giovanni’s Italian Market (Carfax Easter Saturday) Local charities support Raising awareness and money for charities has always been a big part of Horsham Piazza Italia, involving both participants and visitors alike. Children’s charities are, once again, at the heart of the event, with long standing partners Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice (Carfax Good Friday) and The Children’s Trust, and their Supercar Event supporters (Market Square Friday), this year joined by local inclusive play charity The Springboard Project (Carfax and Parkside Easter Monday). Charitable partners also include ItalianJob. com (Parkside Good Friday), SERV Sussex Blood Transport (Display leaders both days, town collection on Saturday), and the Rotary Club of Horsham (Parkside Slot Cars both days and Easter Bunny Hunt all Easter holidays) Supercars The BIG draw. Although Horsham Piazza Italia is built around Italian car marques, it has always featured different and exotic supercars, to add variety and broaden the event’s appeal. This is a formula which has stood the test of time. This element of the event, along with the bike display, is totally reliant on owner and organiser goodwill and, as such, it is inevitable that changes to the programme are made in response to opportunity and availability. 2018 sees the most radical

changes so far, as we bring forward the ‘Bulls’ in place of 11 years of the ‘Prancing Horses’ as the centrepiece of Carfax on Good Friday. Thanks to new partners, HR Owen Lamborghini and a local long term event supporter, organisers are looking to present a Lamborghini display, which, if weather allows, promises to be one of the most ‘jaw dropping’ displays Horsham Piazza Italia will have ever featured. Not quite in the Supercar league, but exciting in a more accessible fashion, are another Piazza first – an impressive display of Abarth’s from the South East Owner’s Club that will be parading the famous scorpion badge with pride (Bishopric Easter Monday). Add to this a Children’s Trust Supercar Event presentation (Market Square Friday), corrals of Ferrari’s (Bishopric Friday, Forum Easter Monday), British McLaren’s (East Street Easter Monday), and Maserati’s (Carfax Good Friday), and Piazza Italia 2018 is set to serve up a feast of four wheeled fantasies for enthusiasts and laymen and women alike. Topping this all off on Easter Monday, a pack of stunning Supercars and race pedigree cars are forecasted by Headline sponsor, Premier GT, in their second year at Piazza Italia (in the Carfax and Parkside Race Paddock). The finale big drive outs You can’t beat a good parade, and Horsham Piazza Italia brings it all together for a big count down and departure of all display vehicles through the Carfax at 3.30pm, or thereabouts, on Good Friday and Easter Monday. The organisers hope to see you all there - and don’t forget to give the drivers and riders a great sendoff…..Who knows, if they enjoy it enough, they may tell their friends to come next time.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a robbery at Co-op in Cowfold on the evening of Wednesday March 21. The following details have been released: At around 10pm the store had

closed and the door was locked, but at around 10.05pm, one member of staff was confronted by two men. The other two members of staff, who were cashing up, were threatened with a machete and all three were tied up.

Sainsbury’s local community development team have sponsored the recent bulb planting, as part of Horsham District Council’s restoration project on the Garden of Remembrance and Mill Bay areas of Horsham. The Sainsbury’s team kindly donated £200 to the project, to plant a large area of daffodils on the bank of Mill Bay, back in November 2017. The cheque was presented to John Marder from the Council’s Parks and Countryside team, by Mike Lewis (Sainsbury’s Commercial Manager), Liz Whitlock (Counter Assistant) and Jon Plumb

balaclava covering his face. He was wearing all black and black gloves and spoke with a southern accent. The second suspect was also black but smaller, around 5’ 4” with grey sideburns, also wearing all black. “We are appealing to anyone in Cowfold on Wednesday who might have seen anything suspicious. Please contact us with any information, however small.” Reports can be made online quoting serial 1376 of 21/03.

Super Strictly Vintage raises almost £2,000 for local charity!

On Saturday 17 March, local charity working with older people, Age UK Horsham District, hung the bunting high and threw open the doors of The Drill Hall to entertain 85 guests at their ‘Strictly Vintage’ 1940s and ‘50s themed Tea Dance. Guests of all ages were dressed magnificently in vintage style outfits and the afternoon was spent dancing to music from the eras, provided by the ‘Royal British Legion Dance Band’. During the interval, guests were treated to a delicious afternoon tea on vintage china, provided by the local charity’s Catering team, and served by their team of wonder-

ful volunteers. The Charity’s Chief Executive Officer, Sonia Mangan, said: “Our Strictly Vintage Tea Dance is fantastic. It’s lovely to see dancers having such fun. We have decided to run two Dances again this year, and we hope that all our guests will return again on 14th September, for another wonderful session of dancing and to support our charity. In the meantime, we have lots of exciting events and activities planned for the next few months, as, this year, we’re celebrating our very special diamond (60th) anniversary, and I would encourage our local community to get in touch

to find out more about our charity, and to see for themselves how the money raised from such events is spent.” Sonia compered the afternoon and thanked the Horsham Business community, including local brewery ‘Dark Star’, who sponsored the event, and the Royal British Legion Dance Band for being integral to its success. The event, organised by the Age UK Fundraising Team and local volunteers, with many other Age UK Horsham District staff providing support, was a huge success and raised just under £2,000 for the local charity’s work with, and for, older people in the community. Other supporters include a host of local companies and individuals, who supplied cakes for the day, items to the raffle and helped to promote the event. All monies raised at this event go towards funding the free services Age UK Horsham District offer across the district to support local older people, such as their Visiting and Information and Advice Services. Loneliness is one of the key issues the charity tackles - over 1 million older people in the UK say they always or often feel lonely, and loneliness is fast becoming a serious public health concern, with research suggesting it can be as bad for one’s health as smoking or being morbidly obese. With a rapidly ageing population, this means more pressure on already stretched NHS and social care services. Age UK Horsham District is committed to reducing and preventing loneliness among older people locally, and their Visiting Service is just one of the ways they do this. The service matches a volunteer to a lonely older person, who then makes regular visits to offer friendship, social interaction and support. If you would like to find out more, make a donation, or help the charity in any way, please call: 01403 260560 or email: info@ageukhorshamdistrict.org. uk

We need to encourage more people, from right across the country, to experience the wonderful county of West Sussex. A range of West Sussex businesses gathered together, on Monday 12 March, to explore ways to develop their offer to visitors in the county. West Sussex County Council facilitated the event, for a range of businesses to discuss ideas on how to encourage new and repeat visitors into West Sussex, and for them to stay longer. With so much available from vineyards, historic homes, gardens, great food, West Sussex can certainly be described as a box of delights. Businesses who attended in-

cluded: Gatwick Airport, Tinwood Estate Wines, Chichester Festival Theatre, the South Downs National Park Authority and many more. Attendees at Edes House also had the opportunity to hear from former Olympian Jon Ridgeon, about Velo South – the new 100mile closed road cycling event taking place in West Sussex on Sunday 23 September this year. The Leader of the county council hosted the event to enable local businesses to come together, and work collaboratively to develop the visitor offer.

delights for visitors to come and try, and to help our businesses grow. “The reception was a fantastic opportunity to explore how we can work collaboratively to grow the visitor economy. “Those of us who live and work in this beautiful county know how many treasures we have here and the warm welcome visitors receive. We need to encourage more people, from right across the country, to experience the wonderful county of West Sussex.”

Firefighters urgent appeal for car donations West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is urgently seeking scrap cars to help firefighters hone their skills and have expressed that it is crucial that firefighters have all the skills and knowledge they need to deal with road traffic collisions, and the standard needs to be maintained, once competent. A number of crews across the county, including new recruits, are in need of extra vehicles to practise their training and development as a service. A representative explained: “we rely heavily on generous donations from the public, offering their cars to crews for training purposes.” Richard Davy, Group Manager, said: “The prices of scrap metal are known to fluctuate, and with the recent increase in prices, we have subsequently seen a significant decrease in the amount of car donations received. “Mark Maynard, our local scrap

However, the change in prices has seen stocks run extremely low and as a consequence, fewer cars have been available to us. “Unfortunately, attending road traffic collisions is a huge part of a firefighter’s role, and, therefore, I cannot express the importance of having practical training to maintain those life-saving skills.” If you would like to donate your car, please email frs.media@ westsussex.gov.uk or call 01243 752448 and Autocovery will come and collect the car for free. Brave ‘soles’ hot-foot it at St Catherine’s Hospice Firewalk Crawley’s High Street was sizzling on Friday night (23 March) when more than 120 peoplen from Crawley and Horsham walked across fire to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice. Brave ‘soles’ had a briefing from UK Firewalk staff, who shared their top tips for successful firewalking, before facing a 15 foot walk on a bed of red hot embers. Amongst them was Alan Peckham from Crawley, whose sister Janice was looked after by St Catherine’s. He said: “The hospice made Janice feel safe and comfortable. They treated her as a person, not a patient, and their care was inspirational. The Firewalk tonight was fantastic! It was really exciting walking across the hot coals, and quite out of character for me, as I don’t tend to take risks too often. It’s been Page 2 great to go out of my comfort zone

to raise money for a cause I feel really strongly about.” As well as the main Firewalk, 13 under 18s faced a tough challenge of their own, braving a pit full of Lego bricks barefoot. Eloise Colclough, 6, took part in the brick walk dressed as a superhero. She said: “I’ve seen my Daddy step on a piece of Lego so I was really worried, but I just took a deep breath and did it! St Catherine’s do amazing things for very poorly people and I really wanted to help. Raising money has been fun, I even got my teachers to sponsor me!” Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who braved the flames, Lego bricks, or came out and supported our Firewalk on Friday evening. It was a brilliant night and humbling to watch people pushing themselves out of their comfort zones to raise

money to support local terminally ill people. “For many local people, including some who took part on Friday night, St Catherine’s has supported someone they know – a family member, friend or neighbour. At the moment, for every person we care for, there are two others who need us who we can’t help. This is something we’re determined to change. Thanks to the support of everyone who took part on Friday, we’re one step closer to being able to support more people.” The Firewalk is on track to raise an incredible £30,000, but it’s not too late to donate. If you would like to support the event, you can donate online at: www.justgiving. com/campaigns/charity/stcatherines/firewalk2018 or to find out how you can take on a future challenge for St Catherine’s, please visit: www.stch.org.uk

Farlington Reception to admit boys from September 2018

Farlington School has announced that it will welcome boys into its Reception Class from September 2018, following a decision made by the Governors and Senior Leadership Team, last week. In a recently released statement, the school said: “The move towards a co-educational Prep School will be gradual and our existing classes in the Prep and PrePrep will remain girls-only. Only the Nursery and Reception class in September 2018 will have both boys and girls. There is no change to the arrangements in the Senior School or Sixth Form. “We appreciate that our status as a girls’ school has presented challenges for our families with boys, and that our wonderful grounds,

facilities and inspirational teachers have much to offer both boys and girls. Current parents were consulted and were overwhelmingly supportive of the proposal.” Louise Higson, Farlington’s Headmistress, commented: “This is a significant and exciting change for the School. “The Farlington ethos of inspiring and educating the individual will always remain. We know that girls and boys learn in different ways and this will be reflected in our teaching methods in the classroom. We are looking forward to giving our new co-educational Reception class of September 2018 a very warm welcome to the Farlington community.”

You’re Hired! Students ‘interviewed’ by business experts

Collyer’s Employability students have been put through their paces, with mock interviews by top experts from Assurity Consulting. Lucy Hargreaves, Employability Co-ordinator, explained: “Assurity’s Ian Robinson and Lara Batley have been running some brilliant sessions with our students over the last few months. Working from real job descriptions, the group have followed the process of researching the company and job role, completing an application and submitting a CV and covering letter. “After all the preparation and research, they were then finally

put through the rigours of a mock interview by senior staff from Assurity; we made sure our students had never met them, to add to the realism!” Assurity’s Thomas Nicklin, Victoria Teer, Vanessa Scampton and Sarah Cross posed the questions and also took time to judge performances in several awards categories. Joint winners of the Best Interviews were Tim John and Hope Johnson; Best CV and Covering Letter was won by Ed Pirie, while Best Dressed Prize went to Jason Glaze. Best Question to the Interview Panel was awarded to Joe Humphries. Using their extensive experi-

Local builders merchant nominated for Industry Award Kingsfold builders merchant, D.W. Nye, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Independent Merchant of the Year (1-10 branches) Award by the longest running industry publication, the Builders Merchants Journal (BMJ). Customers, suppliers and manufacturers can now vote for the local business to win in a public vote. The BMJ has been serving the construction industry for almost 100 years and this is its first awards programme. Aimed at celebrating success stories, some of the biggest names in the industry are involved, including Hanson Cement, H+H, Marshalls and Stonemarket. The BMJ Industry Awards 2018 has been organised by Datateam Business Media, the publisher of Builders Merchants Journal, and is aimed at showcasing some of the leading brands, and instrumental people, within the construction distribution supply chain sector. D.W. Nye is now calling on its customers, manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors, to vote via the secure online form: www.bmjindustryawards.co.uk. Voting will remain open until Friday 13 April, when the companies with the most votes will go on to

ence, Thomas, Victoria, Vanessa and Sarah kindly spent time with each student to talk through the concept of a job interview, and

after the mocks, they spoke to the students individually, to provide feedback on their performance and advise on areas they may wish to work on before seeking employment. The feedback from the ‘candidates’ was very positive. Tim John said: “I feel a lot more confident in going for real interviews now I have had this experience.” Ed Pirie added: “I worked really hard to prepare and was pleased with the interview’s outcome.” Dan Goodyer, who gave a top performance, was impressed: “Great experience. The Assurity Consulting experts were helpful, friendly and gave great advice.” During the day, the students also gained an insight into an interviewer’s perspective, as Ian Robinson and Lara Batley gave top-tips about what they look for in candidates, how to stand out from the crowd, and methods to build rapport. Employability Co-ordinator, Lucy Hargreaves, said: “This is about making the best of the talent our young people have got and helping them develop it. All the students interviewed today clearly

have huge potential!” Collyer’s Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, who teaches the Employability course, added: “Massive thanks to the Assurity Consulting team for giving up their valuable time and helping the next generation. They have been huge supporters of our Employability course and it was incredibly generous of them to donate the prizes. “The students have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and, through a practical exercise, picked up a tremendous amount about the world of work.” Lara Batley, who, after the interviews, returned to present the student prizes, said: “We are so proud of the students. They performed superbly and were keen to learn new ideas. They were dressed extremely professionally, forming a strong first impression with Thomas, Victoria, Vanessa and Sarah.” Lucy Hargreaves added: “Well done to everyone who took part today - If it were up to me, I’d certainly say to all of them: ‘You’re hired’!” Photo credit: Lucy Hargreaves

Durrants Removals delighted to install defibrillator at their HQ

Business Martin Read - Reporter D Durrant - local removals and storage experts – are delighted to have been able to install a defibrillator at their Holmbush Farm headquarters. Sue Hayes telling the District Post: “Some years ago my stepfather passed away as a result of cardiac arrest, so, now that defibrillators are more commonly available I thought it was a good idea to have one at the farm for use of the businesses and customers here – and the district community. A number of businesses are located at the farm and the land owner and the companies here were enthusiastic about joining in with us and we are very appreciative of their generous contributions to fund the project. We are near the main Horsham to Crawley Road, where there have been incidents and the defibrillator is registered with the South East Coast Ambulance Service, enabling the public to have access

to it via 999.” A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest, the shock process being known as defibrillation, an essential life saving step in the chain of survival. When making an emergency 999 call in the event of someone being in cardiac arrest, the caller will be directed to the nearest defibrillator, many of which are now available in public places like train stations, shopping malls – such as Horsham’s Swan walk - airport and leisure centres. These defibrillators are often known as public access defibrillators (PAD) as anyone can use them in an emergency to start CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), the life saving medical procedure given to someone who is in cardiac arrest, helping to pump blood around the person’s body when their heart cannot do so. Sue Hayes continues: “Defibs have saved lives at both the Holbrook Club and Horsham Sports

Club and here at Holmbush Farm we were very pleased to welcome Heather Kingdom from the local Community First Responders to talk to us about the equipment and show us how to use it. Prompt action is essential in the event of cardiac arrest and defibrillators give simple, clear instructions to be carried out pending the arrival of the emergency services, so nobody need be afraid of using a defibrillator. To provide as much information as possible to the ambulance crew, the equipment also records the initial treatment that has been provided. I feel strongly that they should be even more freely available in public places, with developers being obliged to install them before handing over the buildings at their sites.” D.Durrant Removals & Storage – 8 The Courtyard, Holmbush Farm, Horsham, RH12 4SE – www. durrant-removals.co.uk – e mail: info@durrant-removals.co.uk – 01293 852983.

Win tickets to The Michael Jackson HIStory Show at The Capitol

TO WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS! Answer this question: Dantanio is the performer who plays ‘The King of Pop’ in this show, in which country was he born? and email your answer to tracey.grubb@horsham.gov.uk by 5pm 13 April 2018. Winner will be notified Monday 16 April 2018. Michael Jackson fans will get the chance to moonwalk their way to The Capitol Horsham on 9th May when The Michael Jackson HIStory Show hits Horsham! After an approximate 5000+ performances in the past nine years across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong,

Dubai, Indonesia, South Africa, Canada and the US, word of this show has started to spread amongst the MJ community, with the show being inundated with pleas to come to the UK stage. It was this persistent devotion of admirers that allowed producer John Van Grinsven to hear the

requests loud and clear, ultimately leading to the Michael Jackson HIStory Show’s UK debut. The fine tuning from producer John Van Grinsven that ultimately made the show a world-wide success. In contrast to other tribute acts amongst the MJ community, the Michael Jackson HIStory Show stays true to a real life Michael Jackson concert with only one solo artist taking the stage; mirroring Michael Jackson’s performances for an accurate experience. The world-class production showcases all of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits live on stage, complemented by the famous dance moves that fans all know, love and aspire to do. Star of the show, Dantanio, will be accompanied by a lively six-piece band, four groovy backup dancers and a phenomenal lighting team. The show features 40 different customised costumes, 20 of which are for the MJ character alone. Over 100 hours have been dedicated to the lighting design, which makes use of 160+ moving lights and over 2000 lighting cues arranged to punctuate and enhance the musical elements of the show. Director Johnny Van Grinsven flew around the world auditioning performers for the role of MJ for over a year before finding and casting Dantanio, a South African theatre performer and solo recording artist who has been studying and impersonating Jackson since the age of nine! It might be cold and cloudy outside, but don’t let the weather fool you, the first day of spring has officially passed… Drusillas Park, in Alfriston, is choosing to ignore the chilly weather and will be chugging full steam ahead with an egg-citing Easter, and spring celebrations. You might be still wrapped up in your winter thermals and feeling sceptical about the change in season, but spring has certainly sprung in the zoo and brought with it the welcome arrival of little bundles of fur and feathers. Amongst the baby boomers of

2018 are twin cotton-top tamarins, two beautiful calves, and a tiny red-footed tortoise. The zoo is also eagerly awaiting the arrival of their baby Chamois Poland chicks, which are expected to hatch in time for Easter. There’s so much to see and do at Drusillas this Easter Holiday! Give Christopher Columbus a run for his money, as you explore the award-winning zoo, and spot over 100 different animal species. Then take turns on the amazing new African themed attraction Go Safari! Soar into the skies

with the Hippopotobus, speed through the air, upon the back of a Flying Cheetah, or journey deep into the heart of the zoo, aboard the Safari Express train. And, if you’re feeling particularly brave, you can even make the most of the watery playground, Get Wet!, which opens in time for the Easter Holidays. However, the fun doesn’t stop there. Making their debut appearance at the Park, Catboy and Owlette, from the PJ Masks, will be popping in on Wednesday 4 April. Come and see the crime fighting duo, as they meet and greet your little heroes in the Events Arena, at intervals throughout the day. Plus, lots of other popular children’s favourites will be putting in appearances throughout the spring months, including: Peppa Pig and her brother George (10 April), PAW Patrol’s Chase and Marshall (11 April), Skye and Rubble from Paw Patrol (7 May), Owlette and Gekko from the PJ Masks (29 May), and Hello Kitty on a number of different dates. Please see www.drusillas.co.uk for full dates and details. Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open from 10.00am daily. For more information, please telephone 01323 874100 or visit the website at www.drusillas.co.uk

Dream of homeownership can be a reality, thanks to Help to Buy at Solomon’s Seal

Homebuyers are being offered a helping hand on or up the property ladder at Solomon’s Seal, Bellway’s new homes development in Broadbridge Heath, near Horsham. That’s because the Government-backed Help to Buy scheme is available at the development, allowing people to purchase a new home with a five per cent deposit and a 75 per cent mortgage. The remaining 20 per cent is provided in the form of an equity loan, which is interest free for the first five years of home

te Quo rict Dist n e Th he w t Pos ing book

ownership. The scheme is available for those buying their first home, as well as people who already own their own place but are looking for more room. Nicky Chapman, Sales Director for Bellway South London, said: “Help to Buy has been incredibly popular with first-time buyers across the region. “We’ve also seen second steppers looking to use the scheme to help make their money go further and purchase a larger property than they otherwise would have

been able to afford. “With just a five per cent deposit required, people can move much sooner rather than spending years saving up for a larger down payment – and the fact that they only need a 75 per cent loan-to-value mortgage means they can take advantage of a wider range of more competitive mortgage deals. “It’s a scheme which has allowed many people to make the move to a home which better suits their needs – and is set to help even more buyers in Sussex.”

There’s a choice of three, four and five-bedroom houses currently available to reserve at Solomon’s Seal. The development is located in the West Sussex village of Broadbridge Heath, near Horsham, within easy reach of both central London and the south coast. The Solomon’s Seal sales centre, located off Old Guildford Road, Broadbridge Heath, is open daily between 10am and 5pm (Thursdays from midday to 7pm). More information is available at bellway.co.uk.

Horsham Colts surge through to National Quarter Final Sunday 25th March – National U18 Cup Old Elthamians Colts 12 23 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Colts’ excellent season steamrollered on in south London last Sunday with a superb victory over their hitherto unbeaten Kent counterparts, Old Elthamians. Faced with big physically strong forwards, Horsham decided that a quick, wide game would give them the best chance of victory and the plan was put into operation with great effect, despite battering forays from the OE’s large forwards.

After defending well Horsham broke through, enabling Max Paterson to cross the line for a wellworked try. OEs responded with a try of their own, but Horsham soon regained the lead when Alfie Burchfield touched down under the posts, Joe Blake converting and then kicking a penalty to put Horsham 15-5 head at the break. The Horsham coaches called for “more of the same”, but second half errors allowed the OEs to post a converted try, narrowing Horsham’s advantage to just three points. Horsham, though, went on to dominate the game, a Blake penalty taking the score to 18-12 after Horsham had crossed the line but were unable to ground the ball. In

the tense final minutes Horsham’s Charlie Best scored in the corner to seal the outstanding 12-23 victory against an opposition side containing two internationals and seven other players on the books of Premier League clubs. Elated Head Coach Tony Lewis enthused: “We asked the boys to give us everything and that is exactly what they did. The front row of Earle, Evans and Grogan were immense as was Brock at number 8, along with Jem Minto in the centre and Conor Riley on the wing. The whole squad deserves immense praise and they are rewarded with a home draw against Worcester in the Quarter Final on April 22nd.”

Champion Horsham Colts revive Easter trip to France

Oxford Hawks prey on Horsham Saturday March 24 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1 5 Oxford Hawks

Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In this clash between the two teams at the extreme ends of the table Horsham initially gave a good account of themselves, only for new Champions Oxford Hawks to run amok in the second half to win with ease. Two early reaction saves from Andrew Issacs kept Oxford at bay before a rampant Horsham attack was thwarted. Oxford then had a short corner, Issacs getting a stick onto the strike to deflect it away. Two Horsham shorts followed, the second resulting from a Joey Humphreys foray, drawing a good high save from the Oxford keeper. After Sean Pearcy cleared off the line Oxford took the lead from another breakaway attack. Five minutes later Horsham burst through for Cas Richardson to score, but Oxford found the net again, a subsequent stunning full length save from Isaacs restricting the deficit to 1-2 at the break. Isaacs was in immediate action on the restart, Oxford hitting the post on the rebound. A Humphreys build up came to nought until Oxford hit the cross bar from a short corner and then went

Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Rugby Club’s colts are unbeaten this season, winning all eight games – as they did last in the previous campaign to retain their Premier League Championship crown after beating their Guernsey counterparts 36-3. And, they are going on an Easter tour to Horsham’s twin town, St Maixent L’ecole in the agricultural area of western France between the Loire Valley and Bordeaux, 40 miles from La Rochelle. Horsham Colts Team

Manager Jeremy Allen told the District Post: “This tour re-ignites a relationship between the two clubs stretching back over 40 years, Easter tours having recently been revived between the youth teams at Horsham and St Maixent.” The French town has a population of around 8,000 and the twinning with Horsham is marked by a prominently placed original red telephone box, Jeremy continuing: “These tours were virtually an annual occurrence in the 70s and 80s and a return had long been mooted, so, four years ago, after a 25 year

gap, Horsham RFC returned to St Maixent with 32 colt players, coaches and a support group. We got the ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo, arriving in St Maixent around midday to be met by the most hospitable and friendly hosts that you could imagine. We stayed in very comfortable accommodation at the local Ecole de l’Armee – the French Army NCO Training School. The whole weekend was fantastic with old friendships re-kindled and new ones forged, with the strong rugby playing bond between the twin towns firmly re-established. We duly won the Easter Sunday game – in front of some 500 spectators, then we greatly enjoyed some of the delicious cheese and pate from the district, and during the subsequent evening conviviality we resolved never to allow such a big gap between tours to happen again! St Maixent RFC President Stephane Guinard vowed to bring a team over to Horsham and he kept his promise the following year and this Easter it’s our turn to go back. And, we’ll be taking some of the supporters who toured in the 80s, carrying on the strong bond between the two rugby clubs and our towns – it’s what rugby is all about!” Horsham Rugby Club are involving Horsham’s Twinning Committee to promote interest between other sporting clubs or groups that may wish to develop links with Saint Maixent.

further ahead on the rebound from their second short in quick succession, Isaacs only being able to parry the shot. With Oxford turning the screw three more shorts put Horsham under pressure, Isaacs pulling off a superb prostrate denial and in Oxford’s next attack Peter Neave hit the ball away from the goal line. Pearcy then fired at the Oxford keeper and Horsham were unable to convert a short. Oxford responded very positively, scoring with a simple put in from their eighth set piece and then, just ahead of the final whistle, they spread the Horsham defence to hit in from the right to win 1-5, two of their goals coming from the league’s joint highest scorers – Jack Briggs and Andy Walters with 23 apiece. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “We played really well up to half time and Angus MacDonald was unlucky not to score, but for the third successive game the opposition’s first goal came from a miss-hit. Next season will enable us to re-group at the lower level - the speed in this league has been so different for our younger players.” Horsham have one more league game – on Saturday April 7th they visit Oxford to take on the University, then, at East Grinstead on May 12, they will play either Lewes or Worthing in the Sussex Cup Final.

Horsham edged out by persistent Hove Saturday March 24 – London 2 South East Hove 43 38 Horsham

Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter In November Horsham beat second placed Hove in a memorably close contest at home and Saturday’s game was another tight match, featuring 11 tries, Horsham being shaded despite holding a substantial lead after 30 minutes in what Horsham’s Richard Ordidge described as: “An open, entertaining game and a fantastic advert for rugby.” Sustained pressure resulted in a Nick Bell try, converted by Joe Wilde. Hove responded with an interception try, but Horsham regained the lead with a Tom Blewitt try kicked over by Wilde, who subsequently converted both Mike Watts’ try and a try of his own, giving Horsham a seemingly invincible 7-28 advantage. But, Hove refused to countenance defeat and when Horsham conceded a penalty try, quickly followed by a converted try, the deficit was reduced to 21-28 at the break. Horsham re-established their ascendancy on the resumption, Tom Johnson crashing over,

Wilde again obliging with the extras. Hove, though recovered with a try, yet Wilde’s successful penalty put Horsham 12 points in front, but this was eroded by two converted tries and when Horsham conceded a late penalty, the game was clinched by promotion seeking Hove. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “A disappointing result after we’d been in total control for large swathes of the game. However, at this level its fine margins that count and we allowed Hove back into the game, which we should have closed out in the second half, showing our inexperience. There were a number of strong performances across the team, but the Man of the Match award is shared between Johnny Ordidge and Dan Cass – Johnny carried hard, causing Hove considerable problems and a few Hove lads will be feeling the after-effects of Dan’s tackling today!” Still fourth in the table, Horsham have two league fixtures remaining – on Saturday April 7th their last home match is against Dover (sixth) and on the 14th they travel to Haywards Heath (fifth), who, last Saturday, became the only side to beat runaway leaders Dartfordians this season.

Horsham finish second after draw with the Champions Saturday March 24 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 3 3 Surbiton 2s

Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In their final league game of the season, Horsham Ladies took an early lead and were 3-1 to the good at half time, but high scoring champions Surbiton hit back with two second half goals, the impressive display of competitive hockey ending in a 3-3 draw. After Surbiton had broken through and unleashed a wide backhander, Gee Humphreys gave Horsham the lead in the sixth minute. Hannah Simpson then saved two Surbiton attempts until, following a prolonged discussion between the umpires after Horsham protests, the equaliser was allowed. Horsham, though, kept up the pressure earning three short corners, Fran Crossley putting the ball in the net on the rebound from the second. Then, just before the break, Gee Humphreys scythed in Horsham’s third. On the resumption Horsham put together some excellent build ups with Fran Crossley just unable to convert another of Louisa Denman’s probing breakthroughs. The teams traded short corners at either end and when Surbiton walked in the ball with 15 minutes remaining it seemed to give them a new lease of life and they drew level from the second of two subsequent short corners, the hard fought game end-

ing three apiece. Gee Humphreys told the District Post: “I enjoyed getting two goals, of course – especially from the centre back position and when we had the lead we thought we could win. Although Surbiton are a very strong side and very difficult to beat, we’re the only team in the league to have lost just one game.”

Missed chances cost Horsham dear

I enjoyed getting two goals, of course especially from the centre back position... Already promoted, Horsham finish their league season second on level points with Surbiton, who have a superior goal difference and a game in hand. With one game remaining in their season Staines are bottom by a street with Epsom in the penultimate spot. On April 7th Horsham Ladies, defend their Sussex cup title in a semi final tie at Christ’s Hospital (1.30 start). Since the 2001-2 season the ladies have appeared in 12 of the 15 finals, winning ten. To put Horsham’s ascendancy into perspective, in that period Eastbourne have won two finals and the only other clubs to triumph – Brighton, Chichester and East Grinstead – have each succeeded in one.

Saturday March 24 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 1 4 Ramsgate Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Despite conceding an early goal, mercurial Horsham were still very much in contention at the break, but after equalising in the second half, three more goals from

Ramsgate sealed the Hornets’ fate. Horsham, though, started brightly with Alfie Rogers breaking through, but Ramsgate opened the scoring when Aaron Millbank smashed the ball home in the 12th minute. Horsham attempted an equaliser mid way through the half but Rogers could not get the ball past Ramsgate keeper Luke Watkins. Then Rogers and his brother Bailie combined in a double act, only for Watkins to spoil their fun before he negated a George Landais foray and two more Alfie Rogers opportunities, Horsham trailing 0-1 at half time. However, Horsham drew level ten minutes into the second half when substitute Bradley Gayler got into the box to supply Landais, who made no mistake. But, after winning three of their last four games, Ramsgate were in good form and responded with two killer goals in as many minutes - Millbank completing his hat trick at the double, first with a side footer and then with a strike low into the net. Suddenly Horsham were 3-1 down but they mounted a challenge, yet the Rogers brothers were frustrated again. When 20 year old Toby House came on he was soon in action, but skimmed the bar before Joe Shelley narrowly missed connecting with a header. Ramsgate rubbed salt in Horsham’s wounds when Alfie Paxman took advantage of Horsham’s defence while they anticipated a non-forthcoming whistle for offside, enabling Paxman to get past Josh Pelling in the Hornets’ goal. In the final analysis Ramsgate maximised their opportunities and, sadly, Horsham didn’t. The Hornets will now be keen to bounce back with strong performances in the run in, starting against another Kent side, Ashford, at Culver Road Lancing on Tuesday, 27th

YMCA remain top after gritty goal-less draw Saturday March 24 Macron Store Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 0 Peacehaven & Telscombe Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The car park at Gorings Mead was full and the large crowd was entertained to a hard fought draw against the young, spirited Peacehaven team against whom YM had battled out a 1-1 encounter at Piddinghoe Avenue’s Sports Park four months ago. The game got off to a competitive, even start with both sides seeing the chances created neutralised by efficient defences. For YM Dave Brown got in a header, then Ash Dugdale broke through only to fire over, Tony Garrod doing the same before Ollie Moore was up-ended by the corner flag, the resultant free kick and other opportunities at either end coming and going, leaving honours even at the break. Early in the second half both sides had corners, Callum Donaghey’s

Dan Evans being congratulated by Peter Buckland on his 250th appearance for YM, against Peacehaven & Telscombe pile driver blazing over, Peacehaven being similarly off target. Then, YM’s Phil Johnson ended up in the net when thrusting to head in a cross, before Peacehaven keeper Erikson Aga dropped the ball on two occasions, each time recovering it before YM were able to take advantage. In between, Johnson had broken through only to head straight at Aga, as happened when YM had a subsequent corner.

Later in the game Tony Garrod was bowled over in the Peacehaven area prompting cries for a penalty, but the referee waved play on and despite both teams pressing hard they had to be satisfied with a share of the points, massive effort throughout being thwarted by indifferent finishing. YM Manger Peter Buckland told the District Post: “We threw the kitchen sink at them in the last 15

Horsham YMCA First Team Manager receives the trophy from Chairman Geoff Foreman before the home match minutes and at the end the players were clearly frustrated that they couldn’t clinch victory. But, with seven games to go, we’ve come away with another clean sheet and the point gained could be valuable in the run in.” In this tightly contested league, YM still head the table - with 64 points from 31 games - ahead of Pagham (30 games), Three Bridges (29) and Saltdean (32 played) all with 60

points. Haywards Heath are fifth with 59 points and Chichester City sixth with 58, both having a game in hand over YM. On Easter Saturday YM – hoping that the injured Luke Gedling, Charlie Cooke and Sam Schaaf will be fit to return host Saltdean and then on Tuesday (April 3rd) they have a local derby at nearby Broadbridge Heath with a 7.45 kick off.

YMCA bounce through to Peter Bentley Cup semi final Photos by Tim Hewlett

YM U21 players (Left to right): Daniel Lombardo, Callum Jeal and Bradley Ross. Tuesday March 27 – Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup – Quarter Final Horsham YMCA 4 0 Eastbourne Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA are delighted to be in the semi final of the Peter Bentley Cup after completing a hat trick of wins against 7th in the league Eastbourne Town – Sussex’s oldest senior club - this season. YM took the field without Luke Gedling and Sam Schaaf – both still injured – and cup tied players

Luke Donaldson and Ollie Moore. Pacey Eastbourne, quick up front, put YM under early pressure, but YM were creating, looking good going forward and, on 35 minutes a curling free kick from Mark Cave put them in front. But, although YM ended the first half with a corner they needed to weather the last quarter of an hour during which Eastbourne enjoyed a good period of play. Resuming 1-0 up YM soon had a corner before Dave Brown scrambled in an early goal. Two more YM corners followed before a bicycle kick rebounded out for Brown to score YM’s third goal. This heralded consistent YM possession and somehow a triple

strike failed to go in. Eastbourne did have have two corners and a free kick, but by then they had a mountain to climb and Callum Jeal - playing his first full game - shot just wide ahead of Daniel Lombardo, who had replaced Callum Donaghey, putting the icing on the cake for YM with 5 minutes of full time remaining. YM are rewarded with a semi final against Crawley Town Gatwick at a venue to be announced. The winners of that tie will play Haywards Heath Town in the final after they beat Saltdean United 2-1 in their semi. Post match YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “It was nice to be away from the pressure of the league, and although we gambled by having three at the back, that was as good a performance as I’ve seen in a long while. It was all us in the second half and we’ve got another big game on Saturday – we’ll be without Ash Dugdale and Brownie then and I’m not sure whether Phil Johnson’s swollen knee will enable him to play, but we should have Sam Schaaf and Luke Gedling back”. Dave Brown added: “We know how tough Eastbourne can be so that was a great result after a gritty first half.” This Saturday YM entertain fellow promotion chasers Saltdean United at Gorings Mead, whom they beat 3-1 in East Sussex last October. Then, on Tuesday YM visit near neighbours, 15th placed Broadbridge Heath (7.45 kick off). In February’s home fixture YM ran out 4-0 winners.

Horsham complete hat trick over struggling Ashford Tuesday March 27 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 3 0 Ashford United Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In September Horsham eliminated lowly Ashford from the FA Cup, then, in February, they beat them 1-2 in the league in Kent and on Tuesday evening the Hornets inflicted a further defeat – a pleasing first win since February 17th, and an unaccustomed clean sheet victory. Horsham set off with intent, Ryan Worrall testing Nuts and Bolts’ keeper Aaron Lee-Wharton, Alfie Rogers’ heading over the resultant corner. Ashford responded with a shot that Josh Pelling had to be at his best to save before Worrall put Ashford under pressure with passes to Joe Shelley and then Rogers, but the opportunities went unfulfilled before the visitors fired wide. With the action switching to the other end, George Landais was unable to get past Lee-Wharton and Rogers was kept at bay by brinkmanship defending. However, just before the break, Landais put the Hornets in front from the penalty spot after Siao Blackwood had

fouled Worrall. There was just enough time for Ashford’s Clark Woodcock to unleash a stinger, but Pelling was up to the task, the half ending with Horsham leading 1-0. Resuming, Shelley and Worrall had chances but were off target before Ashford missed out on the possibility of equalising. Horsham, though, kept pressing and that paid dividends when, midway through the second half, Lee-Wharton failed to keep out Curtis Gayler’s corner. A quarter of an hour later the Hornets put the game well beyond Ashford when full back Henry Watson scored his first goal for the club with a telling header. The welcome 3-0 win cements Horsham’s 13th spot with clear space from the chasing pack, while Ashford are left hovering above the relegation zone. This Saturday Horsham play 6th placed Walton Casuals at Lancing. In Surrey the sides drew 1-1 in September, but, the following month Horsham knocked out the Casuals from the Velocity Trophy 3-1. Then, on Easter Monday Horsham visit the Dripping Pan to take on current runaway league leaders Lewes, whom the Hornets memorably beat 2-1 on New Year’s Day.
