Horsham trumps UK visitor numbers this Easter weekend Whilst national media bemoans the impact of last weekend’s poor weather on high street visitors, Horsham’s two day Piazza Italia event and Saturday Easter markets are celebrating having created the town’s busiest weekend of the year so far. Horsham District Council, along with over 70 partners, delivered yet another extraordinary town centre spectacle, driven by the determined support of well over 200 car and bike owners, who collectively braved the elements to showcase their vehicles. Over 80,000 visitors, across both days of the festival, witnessed some fantastic car and bike displays across the town, and shared in the fun provided by numerous entertainments, activities and themed food and drink stalls. Saturday’s expanded Easter markets, and Messy Easter activities by Horsham Churches Together in Swan Walk, helped to make this the busiest shopping day of all, justifying the decision to focus the Piazza event over two days, so as not to put off regular town centre customers. Local food and drink businesses did a roaring trade throughout the event days, with one Swan Walk retailer, who actively used the event to drive sales, reporting a 60% uplift in turnover on the previous Good Friday. Imaginative use of Council facilities at Parkside provided a broad range

of indoor and outdoor driving fun and welcome weather respite for parents. Although weather did impact on the Italian bikes’ return to the event, there were some fabulous models on show, including a super rare Ducati 1299 Panigale R with just 1 mile on the clock. Supercar enthusiasts were spoilt on either day, with highlights which included HR Owen led 27 car Lamborghini display on Good Friday and the event’s first ever La Ferrari (1 of only 500 built) as part of the Premier GT Race Paddock, and Carfax Supercar display on Easter Monday. Classic car lovers were treated to rare open top sports models from Maserati (Good Friday) and Alfa Romeo, and FIAT (Easter Monday), supported by a host of FIAT 500s, Minis, Abarths and McLarens, across the event. Mindful of the impending Horsham District Council Year of Culture in 2019, although the cars (and bikes) are the stars, Horsham Piazza Italia, as ever, provided something for everyone to enjoy. From English National Opera Star, Jo Appleby and the glorious voices of Oyster Opera, to Horsham Rotary’s Slot Car racing, and favourite Horsham children’s entertainer, Tom Foolery, who was to be found balloon twisting for an enthralled collection of youngsters on Easter Monday, . Regular visitors appreciate that each year the event supports chil-

Supported by The Sporting Bears Dream Rides, whose car owners give passenger rides in smart cars in return for donations, early reports indicate several thousands of pounds were raised. Commenting on the success of the event, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Councillor Gordon Lindsay, said: “On behalf of the Council, I would like to pay tribute to our partners and vehicle own-

ers who contributed so much to the event, and especially to the public who turned out in droves to experience all that this unique event has to offer. “The social media support has seen some amazing viewer figures for the event’s pre publicity and through event live videos, so thanks to everyone who liked, shared or followed the event, helping it to reach out to new visitors across all of the South East. “A massive thank you also goes to the Council’s events team, for working tirelessly to create such

a great experience for all participants to enjoy – residents, visitors and businesses alike. “These festivals clearly offer a huge opportunity for local businesses to engage with new customers, and I hope that increasing numbers of them will choose to do exactly that with the forthcoming programme of events across Horsham District this Spring and Summer.” Next up on the Council’s event calendar is Horsham’s English Festival on May 12 & 13 and the Plum Jam VW rally on 27 May.

Teaching our young people to become Junior Citizens Horsham District Council’s Junior Citizen Week, celebrated its 24th anniversary recently, with the Drill Hall in Horsham playing host to some 1,160 Year 5/6 children from 33 primary schools across Horsham District. The week-long event ran from 23 to 29 March and was organised by Horsham District Council’s Community Safety team. Children took part in eight interactive sessions and learnt about various aspects of keeping themselves and others safe, as well as the importance of being good citizens in the community. Participating organisations that gave their time, free of charge, across the week, included Sussex Police, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Junior Neighbourhood Watch, Magistrates in the Community, West Sussex

County Council, Bike Ability, and Community Rail Partnership. 10 year old Catalina Pearson, who is in year 5 at Shelley Primary School, Broadbridge Heath, spoke highly of the event: “I thought it was really fun. It was good, because it showed young people how to be good citizens”. Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, said: “I am extremely glad that Junior Citizen Week remained in the calendar once again this year. “The time and commitment which goes into organising the week, from the many agencies which take part, is testament to the importance of citizenship. I am proud that Horsham District Council organises such an event and pleased that this year’s event was as successful as those which have gone before it.”

Horsham’s wonderful Easter just goes on and on and on!

The wonders of Piazza Italia have only just finished and we are now looking forward to Horsham’s 10th Annual Pancake Races on Tuesday (April 10). Owing to bad weather, the event was set back from Shrove Tuesday, but has turned into a blessing in disguise, as we still have it to look forward to - a real bonus for the spring school holidays! Some 30 Teams will compete in the Carfax between Noon and 2pm for a series of Trophies, with the overall winners receiving the coveted Sains-

bury’s Cup. Event organisers sent “huge thanks” to Ringway/Eurovia for the creation of the Race Track, Spirit fm for their sponsorship, and Sainsburys for the supply of pancakes, lemons and sugar: “There will also be about 6 mascots, including last year’s winner ‘Buster’ the search Dog and his mate ‘Woody’ competing in the Giant Egg and Spoon Race. Race music will be provided by DJ Andy with the race commentaries being given by none other than... that’s a surprise!”

Those who are not in a team are invited to visit the Carfax on Tuesday and join in the fun between noon and 2pm. Visitors are reminded to bring the kids for a ‘flippin’ fantastic’ time. Horsham‘s 10th annual Pancake Races are organised once again by the Rotary Club of Horsham, with support from Horsham District Council. All proceeds will go to charity, with the charity chosen by the winning team and the most nominated charity across all teams receiving a third of the prize money each. The remaining third will be won by the best Charity Team in the races. Whilst in Horsham, why not get the kids to enter the Great Easter Bunny Hunt which is taking place in 25 Horsham Shops until Sunday April 15? Children under 13 can win cash prizes of up to £40, as well as small goodies, as they follow the trail. Entry Forms are available in participating shops, in last week’s local newspapers or downloadable from a variety of Horsham Facebook and websites. The best shop to start the Trail at is probably Toy Barnhaus in Swan Walk. The Bunny Hunt is also organised by Horsham Rotary Club. Profits from both events go to help needy families in the local community.

Bikeability funding boost helps to reach more West Sussex schools

Extra funding has been awarded to help even more West Sussex schoolchildren learn how to cycle safely on today’s roads. The County Council provides Bikeability training free-of-charge to schools and the importance of this has been recognised with an extra £15,500 in Department for Transport (DfT) funding. This will help provide Bikeability Level One and Two training, taking children from the basics of balance and control, through to planning and making independent journeys on busier roads. Bob Lanzer, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “This is great news as the extra

funding will allow us to reach even more schools and more individuals through the Bikeability projects we run. “Bikeability, which used to be known as Cycle Proficiency training, is designed to ensure children gain practical skills and understanding of how to cycle on today’s roads. It gives them the skills and confidence for all types of cycling and is governed by national standards.” Dean Pocock, Road Safety Officer, said: “Each year we train in excess of 8,000 pupils at Bikeability Levels One and Two. This year, we are set to exceed 9,000 pupils - something which we’ve never done before. “There are three levels to Bike-

ability and we currently offer a combined Level One/Two course to all schools across the county which have Year 6 pupils who want to take part.” DfT funding is used for holiday courses, additional aspects of the Bikeability programme and to give pupils, unable to attend courses in term time, the chance to participate. The County Council has consistently met the initial target of 860 trainees per year and was successful in a bid for an additional 269 places, funded by the DfT, in October 2017. Dean highlighted another important aspect of the scheme: “The important role Bikeability plays in supporting young people to be physically active is supported by my colleagues in Public Health. “The more children we can train to be confident cyclists, the more we are contributing to making the young people of West Sussex more physically active.” Picture: Bikeability Instructor Rob Piatt uses a tandem to help a trainee at River Beach Primary School in Littlehampton. The road safety team ran a week’s course for children in the school’s hearing impairment department, who all have problems with balance. Rob used the tandem and other adapted bikes to get the trainees used to balancing before attempting two wheels on their own.

Horsham District Council is asking residents and visitors to give their views on Warnham Local Nature Reserve. The Council, with the help of the Friends of Warnham Local Nature Reserve, is conducting a satisfaction survey, which will take place over the next four weeks, to assess overall satisfaction with the Nature Reserve and, importantly, highlight any areas for improvement. Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “We know how much local people value Warnham Local Nature Reserve and we are always looking at ways to improve the experience there. “At the same time, we appreciate that some people do not visit it, and we would like to know why. “The survey will help the Council understand what people would like

Britaniacrest have submitted a new planning application for a Recycling, Recovery and Renewable Energy Facility and Ancillary Infrastructure to West Sussex County Council, and given a deadline for comment of April 28. Rural and residential areas surround the proposed location for the industrial incinerator at the Wealden Brickworks, Horsham, off the A264. No Incinerator 4 Horsham community group said: “The submission clearly shows that the chimney of the incinerator will be 95m tall, taller than Big Ben. It will be

far taller than the current brickwork’s chimney at 26.5m high. The proposed incinerator building will be taller than the brickworks chimney at some 35.92m in height and larger in scale than the Horsham shopping center, Swan Walk, that is 1.4 times the length of a football pitch. “This proposal will be a visual carbuncle for Sussex and Surrey, making Horsham the dumping ground for waste from other counties, shipped in along our congested roads. “The West Sussex County Council waste policy is clear on

many fronts and one is Strategic Objective 10: To protect and, where possible, enhance the natural and historic environment and resources of the County. And Policy W11: Character. Proposals for waste development will be permitted provided that they would not have an unacceptable impact on: (a) the character, distinctiveness, and sense of place of the different areas of the County... “There is no way that this monstrosity of an industrial incineartor will ‘enhance the natural and historic environment’ of Horsham town.” Image: Ni4H.org in Horsham during the Italian Piazza weekend, talking of grounds to object to an incinerator in Horsham. Full of hope and encouragement, this beautiful traditional folktale has been retold with a simple script, and four stunning songs that are full of the expectation, disappointment and ultimate joy of the story. Amberley Museum hosted the official opening of the Billingshurst Signal Box on Sunday 25 March. The event was attended by the volunteer team who worked on the restoration of the signal box and around 70 enthusiasts. The ceremony was held at 11am, and the Museum’s Chair of Trustees, John Robbins, welcomed TV and radio journalist, Nicholas Owen, who officiated the ceremony. A representative stated: “The Museum is very proud to be the new home of the signal box, a very rare Saxby and Farmer type 1b box, dating to before 1876. The signal box used to stand at the Billingshurst level crossing. “Built for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, the signal box is a welcome addition to the

cally, and also provides a good view of the site from the top of the historic De Witt kilns, which are one of the Museum’s scheduled historic monuments. The Museum is looking to attract new volunteers to help to man the box once it has opened. If you are interested, the opening event would be an interesting way to find out more about the new exhibit.” The Museum also opened the new engine shed as part of their standard line collection. Nicholas Owen, along with Tony Johnson, who is a long standing Museum volunteer, and has worked hard on this project over the last 10 years, drove ‘Burt’ (the standard gauge loco) down the tracks, and into the new engine shed, to declare the exhibit open. The Museum hosts several rail events throughout the open season; Coming up soon is the annual Spring Industrial Trains on Sunday 15 April, when the public is invited to enjoy a day of narrow gauge action on the Museum’s railway, with demonstration runs on the Road Machine contractors’ monorail. This year, the Museum is celebrating its 40th season, and is hosting over 50 events in 2018 from children’s activity days to classic vehicle shows. The season, which began on 7 March, will run until 28 October. Raymond Warren talks employabiltiy at Collyer’s

Collyer’s welcomed gifted artist Raymond Warren to the college for a session with students focussing on employability. Raymond took part in a lively TV style chat show with students, focussing on his career journey, which gave a fascinating insight into his work in local government across the south east and time in the United States helping with the Kohn Kerry presidential election campaign! Lucy Hargreaves, Collyer’s Employability Programme Coordinator, said: “It was so inspiring to hear about Raymond’s drive, determination and focus on what’s important to him. “It was incredibly generous of him to accept our invitation and give up so much of his valuable

time to prepare for and take part in today’s session; our students really enjoyed the lively Q&A and loved his amusing anecdotes of working on the campaign trail.” The second-year students who attended the session were those currently studying the innovative Employability Programme at Collyer’s. The course, which started in September, has been uniquely designed by the college to help students into the world of work with the help of taught sessions, workshops, trips and a host of inspiring special guests. This was where Raymond Warren stepped in! Collyer’s Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, who teaches the course, and hosted the Q&A, said: “Raymond’s journey from his east midlands upbringing, to working

in government and presidential political campaigns, to his life now as an artist, could be a motivational book! We were all inspired by him and, when we reflected on the session, we agreed that everybody loves Raymond!” Second year student, Dan Goodyer, who, alongside his A-levels, is studying the Employability course at Collyer’s, said: “We were fascinated to hear Raymond’s career story, but none of us saw the big ‘reveal’ at the end when he told us he’d completely changed direction and become an artist. Wow! What else can I say? Wow!” Raymond was impressed with the students and their questions: “I really enjoyed the session and was impressed with the group of students. Personable, thoughtful - and they asked some really great questions. Their aspirations make me want to be 18 again! I have recruited a lot of young people during my career, and I have to say that the students I spoke to would have impressed me if they were like that in an interview. Engaging, happy and eager. Really impressive - I wish I had their self-confidence when I was their age! “Well done to Lucy Hargreaves and Steve Martell for putting on such a great course. They have clearly helped make a difference for all of the students.” Picture (left to right): Tim John, Dan Goodyer, Sophie Childs; artist Raymond Warren; Jack Manger, Hope Johnson, Ed Pirie and Tom Williams

Is your business ready for GDPR? Michelle Betts With possible fines of €20 million or 4% of a company’s global annual turnover of the previous financial year for non-compliance, GDPR is a hot topic of conversation between business owners right now. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is enhancing the rules around data protection and privacy for all individuals in the European Union. All businesses, no matter how large or small, need to be compliant by 25th May 2018 and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has been issuing guidance to assist with this. Many smaller business owners don’t believe GDPR applies to them. However, any business holding personal data will need to consider the impact of GDPR and become compliant with the legislation. There are enhanced criteria for those businesses holding sensitive personal data, such as health data or data regarding children. If your business holds personal data then you may need to register your business with the Information Commissioner’s Of-

fice if you have not already done so. The ICO have a short online questionnaire you can use to establish if you need register on their website. Registration currently costs £35 per year but will rise from May 2018 dependent on the size and turnover of your business. To ensure compliance with GDPR, the ICO have outlined 12 steps to follow; Awareness; Information you hold; Communicating privacy information; Individuals rights; Subject access requests; Lawful basis for holding data; Consent; Children; Data breaches; Data protection by design and data protection impact assessments; Data Protection Officers and International. There is more information regarding these 12 steps on the ICO website if you want to find out more. It is important to ensure you follow advice from reputable sources regarding GDPR as there is a great deal of misinformation online. Unfortunately there are people taking advantage of businesses regarding GDPR, with so called ‘experts’ making money giving the wrong advice. If you use a GDPR

Consultant, please check their credentials and their experience in data protection and security to ensure they are reputable. As a business owner it is important to document your data protection guidelines

for GDPR. Two of the key areas to review under GDPR are rights for individuals and IT security. Many businesses are currently updating their privacy policies, consent forms and mailing lists as well as reviewing their IT sys-

tems to ensure compliance. Many are carrying out staff training to ensure everyone is aware of their obligations under GDPR. GDPR focuses on individuals rights, ensuring rights to be informed, of access, to rectification, to erasure, to restrict processing, to data portability, to object and not to be subject to automated decision making. The regulations are setting a high standard for consent from individuals to businesses; their consent must be freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous with a positive opt in, separate from other terms and conditions. In addition, people must be able to easily withdraw their consent. In terms of IT security, some important areas to review are your website security, security controls including passwords, firewalls, virus protection and secure data backups. You will need to ensure your data is secure both in the office and on the move; smartphones should be password protected, laptops encrypted and you should have the ability to wipe devices remotely. Businesses also need to consider the GDPR compliance of or-

Comedy Beats in Lamb’s Green

Comedy Beats return to The Lamb in Lamb’s Green near Rusper on Thursday 12 April, for our fifth comedy show at this venue. We set the company up in late 2015, to provide shows of a quality to rival any of the major comedy clubs in the country. The Lamb was one of the first venues we worked with and have been really supportive ever since. All of the shows we have done there have been packed and this year, like last, we will be doing three at this venue. Our formula is very simple, we always put on 4 of the very best comedians from the UK circuit. I have been a comedian myself for more than the last twenty years. I noticed, at gigs that I was doing in London, how many people were travelling up there from the home counties. I thought ‘why not put them on down here and save those people the expense of travelling up to London, not to mention the price of food and drinks in the West End?’

The closing act is the wonderful Patrick Monahan. In 2011 he won the ITV 1 series Show Me The Funny, which led to the release of his debut DVD Patrick Monahan Live. His style is improvisation based. In all the time that I have been involved in comedy, I’ve only seen a handful of comedians that are able to do what he can. He has this ability to seemingly just make up his set in the moment. They say practise makes perfect, and it probably does, as in 2015 he was named as Britain’s Hardest Working Comedian by www.ents.24.com for playing the highest number of venues that year! The Australian comic Colin Cole opens the show. Over the years, I have performed in over a 100 gigs alongside him and I have honestly never seen him have a bad gig. He is literally one of the biggest names in Australian comedy. Standing at 6’ 7’’ he is a giant of a man. Essentially, he mixes observational comedy with top gags, to stunning

effect. Audiences love him, wherever he performs, and he closes shows at comedy clubs all over the UK. The fact that he is opening for us sets the bar really high for the other acts on the bill, but that is how we like to do it at Comedy Beats. I know he will kick off the show perfectly. After the first interval, Alan Francis will take to the stage. Of all the acts we have lined up for this show, I am most excited about having Alan. He is a consummate storyteller and I have been a big fan of his work for many years. When I book the acts for a show, I like, whenever possible, to use comedians with different styles. Storytellers are probably the most common genre and yet really great storytellers are probably the hardest to find. Alan is one of the best. He also has numerous TV writing/performing credits to his name, that include working with/for Alistair McGowan, Alexi Sayle, Alan Partridge, as well as Smith and Jones. Compering the show is the vastly experienced John Mann. He is one of the most respected MC’s on the circuit, because of his ability to set up a room for a great night of comedy. He mixes top notch material with great audience interaction. He is also a much in demand warm up act for various TV shows that are recorded in front of a live audience, including The Omid Djalili Show, Harry Enfield’s Brand Spanking New Show, and Ant and Dec’s Xmas Special. With John hosting the show, I know it’s going to be a great night! It all takes place at The Lamb Inn near Rusper on Thursday, 12 April. Doors open at 7.00 and the show starts at 8.30. Tickets, which include a fish and chip meal, are priced at £22.50 and can be purchased in advance, direct from the venue or online by visiting www. comedybeats.com

Calling All Ukulele Players!

The ground-breaking, original and musically adventurous Six Grooves For Ukulele (a ukulele concerto in six movements) is coming to The Hawth Theatre,

Crawley on Saturday 21 April. Described as “A game changer for the ukulele” by George Hinchliffe, co-founder of The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, Six Grooves is propelling the ukulele to the pinnacle of contemporary orchestral achievements and is Richard Durrant’s most adventurous work to date. Performed by The Richard Durrant Orchestra, led by the Sussex composer and guitar & ukulele virtuoso, Six Grooves retains the familiar tongue in cheek personality of the ukulele, whilst highlighting the social and musical power of the instrument. The piece successfuly bridges the gap between the professional and community musician, whilst challenging preconceptions of what the ukulele is musically capable of. The Richard Durrant Orchestra features world-class musicians, a rich sounding string ensemble, and a range of unique and idiosyncratic instruments (water phone, berimbau, vibraphone, marimba, piano and keyboards, plus Durrant’s own invention - the percussive Bicyclatter), the programme is guaranteed to delight music lovers of any genre. The RDO is calling all ukulele enthusiasts, throughout Sussex and beyond, to unite and take part

in a series of workshops facilitated by Richard Durrant. Regardless of your current abilities, these workshops will develop your technical and musical capabilities on the ukulele, and prepare you for the performance with the RDO. The cost to attend three workshops, and perform alongside this world-class orchestra in a professional theatre, is £35. Tickets for the performance only are £21.50, over 60/child: £18, schools/groups 10+: £16.50, ukulele passport holders: £19 Workshop dates: • Tuesday 10 April 7 pm at the Hawth Theatre • Tuesday 17 April 7 pm at The Hawth Theatre • Saturday 21 April Concert day: 11 am Six Grooves Prep; 5.30 pm Rehearsal with the orchestra at The Hawth; 7.30 pm Concert. *All participants must play a soprano, concert or tenor uke in conventional tuning (GCEA). ‘No Jacket Required’ Quite a finale to season 15th Anniversary Tour When, in March 2011, Phil Collins announced his retirement, it led many to re-evaluate his considerable musical legacy. So much so that it brought him out of retirement last year, to perform a short series of shows across Europe to his fans, both old and new. It’s unlikely to be a permanent return to the stage for Phil, but, fortunately, No Jacket Required, the UK’s leading Phil Collins tribute, is continuing to perform his music in their faithful recreation of his live shows – and this April, they return to The Hawth as part of their 15th Anniversary Tour. No Jacket Required frontman, Dave Whitehouse, said: “It’s a real pleasure and privilege to perform such great music. There’s so much to choose from, it’s hard to decide what to leave out of our shows!” Formed in 2002, the band has performed all over the country as well as overseas, to appreciative full houses. Prior to that, Dave spent five years in a Genesis tribute, making him the UK’s most established Phil Collins tribute artist. The band clearly takes its work seriously and has seen Collins perform on over 30 occasions in order to hone their take on the superstar singing drummer. Whitehouse even met Phil Collins prior to one of his arena shows in Germany in preparation for a show he performed later in Luxembourg: “He was extremely generous with his

time and wished me well for my show. It was a special moment and great to be able to thank him for the pleasure his music has given me and so many others”. Performance: Saturday 7 April 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £21.50, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or online: www.hawth.co.uk

Horsham District Gig Guide Friday 16th 06/04/2018 September

The final concert of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s season was a fitting and excellent memorial to one of its most loyal supporters. Don Newbold, also a generous sponsor of the orchestra, was due to sponsor the concert but died shortly before. As a tribute to his loyalty and his love of the orchestra the Philharmonic decided to dedicate the concert at the Dome to Don. The well-received concert had some musical surprises. In addition to the fascinating Malcolm Arnold Piano concerto for two, played by the dynamic duo of Worley and Farrell, there was a rousing welcoming Fanfare for a Festival bonus written by Arnold and played at the request of the Malcolm Arnold Society, who helped with the cost of the concert. And for good measure the audience joined in congratulating conductor-laureate Barry Wordsworth on his recent 70th birthday. The programme was certainly a

high note to end what has been a successful season for the orchestra. The drama of the Sibelius Karelia Suite, familiar to people who regularly watched the excellent This Week political programme was a contrast to Worley and Farrell’s fascinating and busy double act on the Arnold Piano Concerto, complexity mixed with moments of lyrical emotion. They threw in a couple of enthusiastically received encores for good measure. The orchestra fully captured the sheer energy, dash and joy of the infectious Delibes Copula Suite, as well as its delicious moments of delicacy. A splendidly invigorating and high-spirited Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens, with Worley and Farrell wittily at the heart of the fun, seemed an apt way to look forward to the next season. Brighton should celebrate having an orchestra of this quality, and its many regular patrons will be looking forward to the music warming the autumn when the new season starts in October.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In the forthcoming season Horsham Cricket Club will again be part of the ECB All Stars Cricket Programme for 5-7 year olds. The eight week programme is delivered across England and Wales at a number of fully accredited All Star Cricket centres in a fun and active way to develop the children’s skills, ensuring that

they learn a great deal – as well as making new friends in a safe and inclusive environment. All girls and boys are welcome and each child registered will receive a pack of cricket goodies, including a bat, ball backpack, personalised shirt, cap and water bottle as a permanent reminder of the fun that they will enjoy. The programme comprises eight one-hour sessions held over eight weeks between 4.30 and 5.30 from Friday May 11th to Friday June 29th. Horsham Cricket Club will also be repeating their drop in Mini

Christ’s Hospital Head to start the 2018 Barns Green Half Marathon

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter The organisers of the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10K races are very pleased to announce that Simon Reid, Headmaster at Christ’s Hospital School will be the official starter for this year’s Half Marathon on Sunday 30th September - the 36th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the third year of the new 10K race. Race Director, Vernon Jennings says: “This is Simon’s first year as the new Headmaster at the school and we are delighted that he has agreed to be involved. Christ’s

Hospital School has always been a huge supporter of our event and I know just how much the runners enjoy going through the stunning school grounds. Simon’s predecessor, John Franklin acted as our race starter in 2016 as did former CH pupil and England Rugby star Joe Launchbury in 2014” Simon Reid commented, “I am delighted to be able to support this truly unique local event. The Barns Green Half Marathon has made a huge contribution to the local community over the past 36 years. The runners come through the school grounds early in the races, and I am pleased to announce that the magnificent

Christ’s Hospital School marching band will be playing while all the runners go passed. What could be more uplifting for all those taking part?” The iconic day’s events featuring music and a variety of food stalls are run entirely by a veritable army of well over 100 volunteers from the village acting as marshals, car park stewards, enrollers and a wide variety of other roles ensuring the traditional smooth running of the event. The races raise a huge amount of money of money for charity and also make substantial donations to various groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village who help with the staging of the race. This year’s official charity for the event is once again the wonderful local St Catherine’s Hospice, for whom over £18,000 was generated in 2017, when the hospice’s Michaela Clements said: “We are so grateful to the Barns Green Committee and all of the hard-working volunteers. We rely on support and donations from the local community and each year the charity needs to raise more than £6.5 million to deliver our expert care services to the district’s people when its most needed.” Last year over 2,000 runners registered for the Half Marathon and 10K races - a significant increase in runners from 2016. The races follow routes on closed roads through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. Details on how to take part in the race are available on the Barns Green Half Marathon website barnsgreen-half.org.uk

International cricket at Horsham

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Cricket Club are delighted to announce that they will be hosting an England v Australia one day match – on Friday 17th August as part of the senior Aussies’ Over 70s tour, Horsham Cricket Chairman Richard Marshall told the District Post: “Some years ago we staged a match between the Australian blind and partially sighted team against our England counterparts. The August fixture will be another prestigious match, and it’s an honour to be asked to put it on at the club - and great that the

cricket authorities recognise our experience and successful track record of staging big matches.” Horsham President Barry Peay added: “The Over 70s Australian team came here in 2013, when we won the O 70’s Ashes. Two years later I was lucky enough tour Australia with the seniors: the Over 60s Australians were a really good side then and perhaps some of them have graduated into the Over 70s’ team.” Horsham Cricket Club will host another representative match on the Monday after the international Over 70 game (August 20th), when there will be a Sussex Over 70s county game at Cricketfield Road. Other news from Horsham Cricket Club – men’s 1st XI scorer Graham Irwin is thrilled to have been appointed scorer for the Indian team in the Lord’s Test against England from August 9th – 13th – a richly deserved accolade for the former Surrey 2nd XI player, respected coach and Sussex 2nd XI scorer. Also, New Zealand international right arm fast-medium bowler and handy batsman Matt Henry, Horsham’s overseas player as a 19 year old in 2011, has been signed up by Kent, having previously played for Derbyshire and Worcestershire.

Local football washed out on Tuesday Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The historic Dripping Pan at Lewes was overflowing on Tuesday causing the rearrangement of Horsham’s Bostik League – South Division Fixture, which will now be played – weather permitting – on next Wednesday evening, 11th April, ahead of which the Hornets, 13th in the table, visit South Park in Reigate on Saturday. South Park are one place below Horsham in the table, whereas Lewes are currently top, narrowly shading Carshalton Athletic. The local Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division derby between Broadbridge Heath and Horsham YMCA suffered the same fate - despite the unstinting efforts of the Leisure Centre staff the pitch remained waterlogged. A new date for the fixture is awaited. On Saturday BBH (15th) travel to Lancing (11th), where the ‘all weather’ pitch should ensure play, and then on Tuesday they have a tough assignment with a trip to new leaders Pagham. YM are at home tomorrow (Saturday) to take on mid table

Loxwood, to whom they lost 2-1 in November’s reverse fixture, following which, with the top of the table tightly bunched and the title and promotion very much still to play for, YM have five remaining league matches. Three consecutive away games begin with a visit to 12th placed Crawley Down Gatwick on Tuesday (10th), then, on Saturday 14th they visit AFC Uckfield (13th) before going to Haywards Heath (5th) the following Saturday. Then YM return home for their final home league encounter – against Newhaven (9th) on April 28th. In the interim they will have their rearranged fixture at Broadbridge Heath. Earlier this season YM lost to Crawley DG, but they have already beaten the other four sides. Meanwhile, following defeat by Saltdean last Saturday, YM have slipped to third with 64 points from 32 games – an identical record to Pagham, who are second because of their superior goal difference. Haywards Heath are now top with 65 points, also from 32 starts. Three Bridges (30 matches played) and Saltdean (33) are third and fourth respectively with 63 points.

Horsham unable to keep the Stags at bay

Last gasp agony scuppers YMCA Saturday March 31st Macron Store Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 1 Saltdean United Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Saturday March 31 – The Bostik League – South Division Horsham 2 4 Walton Casuals Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham fielded an unchanged side from their winning game against Ashford Town four days previously, but the outcome against play off contenders Walton Casuals – The Stags – was anticlimactic. Walton made the early running with early attacks, fortunately either off target or negated by Hornets’ keeper Josh Pelling. Horsham’s defence has been porous of late and, in the 30th minute they were again found

wanting, Alex Kelly giving Walton the lead with a well-taken goal. Pelling subsequently saved a strong strike, until, right on half time, winger Youseff Bamba surged through, unleashing a powerful volley high into the goal, putting Horsham two down at the interval. On the resumption Scott Kirkwood finally produced a Horsham shot to challenge Walton keeper Denzil Gerrar but the ball was parried for a corner. Toby House and Alfie Rogers then launched a Horsham foray, but Gerrar was not seriously discomforted. Horsham did, though, reduce the deficit in the 69th minute when another House/Rogers incursion enabled Rogers to put the ball in. But, this

was a short-lived success – after Walton efforts had been thwarted, Bamba scythed through to restore the visitors’ two goal advantage. However, five minutes later, the Hornets were awarded a penalty, nonchalantly converted by Curtis Gayler. Despite further indifferent defending, fortuitously culminating in a let off, Horsham had a chance to share the points, but Gerrar had other ideas, before Josh Kelly got past Pelling at the second attempt to seal Walton’s 2-4 win a minute before the end of full time. This was not ideal preparation for the Hornets’ impending visit to leaders Lewes on Easter Monday.

YMCA dominated this game with the lion’s share of possession – especially in the second half, when they had 11 corners, but they failed to convert the numerous chances created and were cruelly undone by an opportunist breakaway Saltdean goal six minutes into extra time. YM were without Ash Dugdale, Tony Garrod and Manager Peter Buckland’s Player of the Week, Dave Brown, but, although Saltdean had experienced higher league players on parade, their team was also not at full strength and this really was a game that YM should have won. YM had beaten fourth placed Saltdean 3-1 in October, but this time their defence kept YM at bay despite constant, battering pressure. The game started in a moment of madness with the concession of a close range Saltdean free kick, but the ball was bundled away enabling Callum Jeal to break through without success. Saltdean blasted over twice before their blatantly serious crunching foul resulted in just a yellow card. YM then hit the bar, had two corners and at least six chances, but the first half ended goal-less. After the break, amid a barrage of YM corners, Phil John-

son engaged in a fruitless one on one with Saltdean keeper Ricky Banks and a frantic goal mouth scramble denied YM. In wave after wave of attacks YM were doing everything except score, Saltdean clearing off the line in the dying moments of full time. With YM throwing everything into attack they were susceptible to a breakaway goal and when Saltdean latched onto a rebound and raced up field YM defenders were committed at the other end, allowing Luca Bish to score right at the very death. This was not a case of the opposition snatching the points, this was flagrant highway robbery, yet, while YM could count themselves unfortunate, they had so many opportunities that the harsh judgement was that they only had themselves to blame, and, with six games left and results from the tightly bunched fellow contenders assuming critical importance, YM President Ron Moulding told the District Post: “The outcome of the league is no longer entirely in our hands.” For the moment YM’s steamrollering victorious run has stuttered to a halt with one win, a draw and two losses from their last four games and they will be looking to return to winning ways at Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday. YM’s Peter Bentley Cup Semi Final against Crawley Down Gatwick will be played at Hassocks on Tuesday April 10th (7.30) and on the same evening YM U21s are in their SCFA Cup Final v East Preston at the league’s Lancing HQ

Gillespie and our local players champion Sussex Sports news Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sussex’s season is underway, Horsham’s Will Beer celebrating with a maiden 50 for the first team. In February Sussex’s new Head Coach Jason Gillespie guided Adelaide Strikers to victory in his native Australia’s Big Bash League and comes to Sussex with impeccable playing and coaching credentials: 402 wickets in 169 internationals, and an unbeaten Test double century, plus domestic cricket for South Australia, Yorkshire, Glamorgan and Ahmedabad Rockets. He coached in Zimbabwe and the IPL and as Yorkshire’s first team coach they were promoted from Division 2 in the championship, were then runners up in Division 1, before he led them to successive Championships, narrowly missing a hat trick of titles in 2016. To

the disappointment of Yorkshire members, he returned to Australia, saying that short term appointments appealed, and became interim Head Coach for Papua New Guinea and, having been a candidate for an England role, surprisingly returned to the UK in Kent’s coaching set up. At Hove, Gillespie was quizzed on why he has joined Sussex on a three year deal considering that he had left Headingley citing family reasons – he has four children. He was also asked whether he might be in line to step into Darren Lehmann’s Australian role. Australian ball tampering would not be discussed, but Gillespie said: “There is a great buzz at Hove with players really putting effort in and I’ll help them to be the best cricketers possible. I loved Yorkshire but it was time to move on, and having played at Hove I was excited to be approached by Sus-

sex and am very impressed with the progressive, flexible attitude here, it was an easy cricket decision to come and I’m happy that I’ll be able to work well with my family commitments. Sussex has a wonderful past and we want to create more history at this very exciting time for the players and support staff. The supporters will see commitment. We’ve got some great players coming through plus experienced cricketers. There is pride and passion – I’m glad we’re not playing against Sussex! I’m not making any predictions: we’ve got a strong squad and our mindset is for continuing improvement.” Does he prefer playing or coaching? “I loved playing, but I’ve had as much enjoyment as a coach when players fulfil their dreams. This is a great club from top to bottom and I’m a lucky man!” Having said that he wants to challenge the Academy players

and give them opportunities, after the press conference Gillespie spoke exclusively to the District Post and when asked whether Sussex would be releasing cricketers to play for clubs in the Premier League when not required by the county (as happens in Kent and Surrey, but often not in Sussex), he told us: “I want players to play and will aim to release them if they don’t need resting. And, I want to keep an eye on the Premier League to spot talent.” Speaking to the District Post, past and present Horsham and Roffey players now with Sussex said: Jofra Archer, a very hot property: “I’ve had a fantastic winter, playing with exciting cricketers in T20 franchises – something I could only dream about when at Horsham.” Will Beer: “My heart is with Horsham, but I hope I’ll be playing for Sussex, naturally.” Pacey left arm bowler George Garton:

“I’ve enjoyed being with the England Lions and hope this’ll be my break through season with Sussex.” Tom Haines: “I’ve been out in South Africa with Sussex for five weeks, training hard and playing. I’m no longer involved with schools cricket and am looking to maximise my opportunity with the county.” Stuart Whittingham: “I’ve been playing for Scotland in Zimbabwe and hope to stay fit and free from injury. Sussex has a good speed attack and the Hove groundsman is looking to get some pace in the wicket, so I hope this’ll be a big season for me.” Sussex have appointed Ben Brown as Club Captain, with Luke Wright skippering the T20 side. While wishing Sussex every success, loyal local county members are still smarting from the departure of Chris Nash, whom they had hoped would lead the team.
