Horsham’s St George’s Day Parade sizzles in Spring sun St George is the patron Saint of Scouting and, each year, Scouts mark the day in many ways. With fifty million male and female members in nearly every country of the world, that’s a lot of celebrating! This hot and sunny Sunday saw two new changes to the way Horsham Scouts run their annual parade. Scouting is about being inclusive to everyone and, this year, a new Beaver in 5th/10 Horsham Scouts wanted to take part, but the pace needed to be a little slower so he could keep up. Between his leader, Oliver, the District Commissioner, and the band, the pace was slowed down to adjust the walking pace, and a chair was at the end for him to sit on during the service. Just those two little things meant that James (aged 7) took part in his first ever St George’s Day parade and his smile definitely made it worthwhile. At the end, James said he enjoyed taking part in his first parade. His favourite part “was the band.” And the best bit about being a Beaver is “learning all the

skills.” Especially “navigation”. The other change was that Explorer’s (aged 14-18yrs old) led the parade of Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts, for the first time in Horsham Scouting history through the streets to the Carfax bandstand. Formed less than a year ago and already full, they represent the expanding membership and growing interest young people (and adults) have in joining and volunteering in Scouting. Explorers aren’t a youth group, they’re part of the largest coeducational youth movement in the UK, with a clear set of shared values and development programme. Wearing different scarfs from the groups they attended before ending up in Explorers, Titans presented an articulate and moving introduction about themselves and their Scouting journey to more than 1500 younger scouts, parents and other supporters of Scouting.

Horsham’s Phil Russell walks the Wall for St Catherine’s Hospice martin read

Reporter

Horsham’s Phil Russell is about to embark on a most spectacular walk – along the stunning section of the Great Wall of China from Gubeikou to Simatai via the wild, remote and rugged landscapes of rolling green hills and mountain peaks, staying in local guesthouses en route. The ancient Wall has an astonishing history: built by many, many thousands of labourers – soldiers, POWs, convicts and forcibly recruited peasants (many of whom perished in the process) – using millions of bricks to provide protection against northern barbarian invaders. The Gubeikou area of the wall has been the scene of many battles. The trip will be undoubtedly be a breathtakingly memorable experience, but Phil has a poignant reason for undertaking the challenge - he is walking to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice who looked after his late wife

Lee after she was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. Describing the St Catherine’s staff as: “True professionals, friendly, gentle, compassionate and clearly loving the work they do” Phil has set himself a £6,000 fund raising target – which he hopes to far exceed, having so far reached just over £4,800. Initial anxiety and nervousness on admission to St Catherine’s was soon dispelled, Phil saying: “Lee said ‘I like it here, I feel safe’ and one of the things that struck me in the first few days was how all the staff and volunteers worked as a team and whatever you wanted it didn’t seem to matter who you asked – the request was always treated with a smile, ‘no problem’ and appropriate help provided. The staff did everything to ensure that Lee was peaceful, pain free and treated with dignity and loving care. They ensured that I was looked after, too, and when Lee slipped away, the love and care still continued.” St Catherine’s Hospice is a charity dedicated to providing expert end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers. From a local event, or festival, to bringing a disused space back to life, West Sussex has a new way to fund and support local projects. West Sussex Crowd is a new crowdfunding platform where you can share your community idea and offer neighbours, local businesses, and other interested parties, the opportunity to pledge their support to make your idea a reality. Ideas can now be uploaded at www.westsussexcrowd.org.uk Debbie Kennard, Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “This is a really exciting time for groups and projects in

West Sussex. “If you have an idea which will benefit your community, whether it’s a renovation project, a festival or even equipment for a club, then upload it to West Sussex Crowd. “Groups have already put started using the site and I hope we will see many more crowdfunding campaigns launch on there soon.” West Sussex County Council is making £330,000 Community Initiative Fund available to pledge to projects on the site. This will replace its previous funding initiatives, including the Small Grants Fund and the Members’ Big Society Fund. Free events for groups with

over 30 years it has been providing high quality hospice care, free of charge, to people living in the Horsham district and beyond, responding to the needs of each individual, helping people achieve their best quality of life. St Catherine’s say: “We are so grateful to our fundraisers: we rely very heavily on support and donations from the local community and each year the charity needs to raise more than £6.5 million in voluntary income. Without this type of support we couldn’t deliver our expert care services to local people when it’s needed most.” Phil Russell’s ‘Great Wall of China Trek’ is organised by St Catherine’s and described by them as ‘The adventure of a lifetime’. 59 year old Phil completed Horsham’s 20 mile Midnight Walk last year and has trained to combat the Great wall’s challenging terrain. He sums up

with: “St Catherine’s made such a difference to our family, so I want to raise as much as I can to help them to continue their wonderful work.” Phil sets off from England on Saturday May 5th.. A very English weekend Know your rights planned for Horsham Our fortnightly review of the law and you, with Mancini Legal – Horsham’s leading lawyer.

NEVER BE AFRAID TO ASK A (FRIENDLY FAMILY) LAWYER

Apologies for the incorrect article placement last week, this is the correct version, we promise. DP. The Horsham English Festival promises to offer a fantastic blend of traditional cultural icons celebrating our English heritage across two days of dance, music, and vehicles, supported by themed stalls and entertainments on Saturday and Sunday 12 & 13 May. The Broadwood Day of Dance: Kicking it all off on Saturday 12 May will be the incredible 26th annual Broadwood Morris Day of Dance; a riot of colour, music and dance featuring around 25 dance sides mostly from the local area. Commencing with a procession at 10.30am, the dancers will then disperse throughout the town to perform a variety of dance traditions, including Cotswold Morris, Step Clogging, Border Morris, Appalachian Clogging, North West Morris and more…. just listen out for the Drummers! And children will be delighted to have a go at circus skills. At 3.00pm, the day transforms into an ‘anyone can join in’, open air Barn Dance at the Bandstand. Everyone is invited to come along and join in the fun. “Interestingly, The Day of Dance was originally intended to be a one off event to celebrate the 21st anniversary of The Broadwood Morris Men and also to make good use of the newly pedestrianised town centre,” recalled Dick Streeter, a long term member of the Broadwood Morris Men. He went on to add, ”The dance teams, expected to be around ten, turned out to be more like 20, and the day was so popular that they all wanted to come back the following year. Ever since then this is now a regular annual event in the town centre that, one year, attracted nearly forty guest teams”.

A new feature this year is being provided by Crates Local Produce, who will have their iconic London black cab outside their shop. In return for a donation to the Samaritans, visitors will be able to sit in the driver’s seat and imagine themselves touring London. Crates will also be offering tasting from their wide range of gin; Again, donations to Samaritans will be very welcome. PJ Aldred of Crates, said: “We love the English Festival, and we’re delighted to be taking an active part this year”. The Day of Dance is supported by Weltons Artisan Brewers, The Beer Essentials – East Street, Courtney Green and Back in Action. The Carfax market traders have been invited to theme their stalls in keeping with the event, and a group of Classic Morris Cars have been invited to display once again on the Forum near Sainsbury’s and TK Maxx/Dunelm. A Celebration of English Tradition featuring the Concert in aid of Samaritans: And if that was not enough, Horsham Folk Club and Horsham Samaritans, supported by Horsham District Council and partners, have planned the festivities for Sunday 13 May. At the heart of the day, on the Carfax Bandstand, Horsham Folk Club and friends will be presenting a concert with an outstanding selection of performers, including John Scott Cree & Eddie Hurdman, Rockchoir, Rhythm & Sole dance company, South Downs Folk Singers, Horsham Community Choir, and two great bands: The Rocking Bankers to start proceedings and Okee Dokee for a grand finale. The concert will take place on the Carfax Bandstand between 11am and 4pm. Elsewhere, visitors will be treated to such varied spectacles as British classic cars, including an HWM Aston Martin supported Aston Martin Owners Club display

from 11am, story telling and fairground activities for kids. The legendary Loxwood Joust team takes over Market Square for a mini-festival of medieval mayhem - Look out for their knights around Carfax during the day! Locally produced food and drink will also follow a traditional theme, led by a Hog Roast and Hot Roast Beef, from Pig in a Jacket and Garlic Wood Farm respectively, Loxwood Mead, and Hepworth’s Real Ales. Ice creams will be available from local shops Candy Box and Paninos, and face painting will be provided by Busydays. All car displays will leave in a mass parade through Carfax at 3.30pm. “The concert is free and is planned to be fun, entertaining and varied, so we hope lots of people will come along to enjoy a range of music from rock to folk with some blues and jazz in between,” said Caroline Thomas from Horsham Folk Club, “We are particularly pleased to have Rockchoir and Rhythm & Sole dance company back again, as well as the South Downs Folk Singers, Horsham Community Choir, and the incomparable John Scott Cree performing with Eddie Hurdman. The concert will get off to a lively start with Horsham Folk Clubs very own rock and roll group, The Rocking Bankers, and will finish with local legends, the Okee Dokee Band.” The Carfax is in the centre of Horsham and within easy walking distance of all the car parks. “The Samaritans of Horsham and Crawley are there for anyone at any time” said Roger Dugdale, Director of the local branch, “Problems have a way of piling up and, without someone to talk to, it can be lonely and stressful. We want to help people if they are feeling emotionally distressed.”

Lawyers often get bad press. Then again so do dentists who tell you that you need a white filling and people that change your tyres and scare you into getting your brakes fixed. When it comes to teeth and tyres people may have a point. But a good family lawyer will never try and ‘upsell’ you. The basis of all English law is a principle called ‘equity’ – that is, what is fair or equitable. You only need to look at things like PPI claims to see that one of the best thing about English law is that the principles of equity are increasingly being enforced.

SUING HAS GONE OUT OF FASHION Under English law everybody is entitled to his or her ‘day in court’ – that is the right to have their side of the story heard, and have an expert or jury decide the merits of any case. The fact is however that lawyers are much more pragmatic these days – bringing a case to court for settlement takes time and costs money. To that extent the term ‘Litigation’ is increasingly becoming replaced by ‘Dispute Resolution’ – any reasonable lawyer would much rather resolve a dispute than escalate it.

IN LAW IF IT’S WRONG, THEN IT’S WRONG You may not like all the PPI ads you see on TV, or in the press, from specialist legal outfits (as a family lawyer Mancini don’t handle PPI), but the fact is that if some big business has taken money from you under false pretences, and taken advantage of you, they should pay it back. Similarly, if you get caught doing 60 mph in a 50 mph speed limit you’ll be punished – you’re either going to get a fine and points on your licence, or pay to do a Police safe driving course.

FAMILY DISPUTES ARE INCREASINGLY COMMON A couple of weeks ago we wrote about Divorce and family law. Divorce is increasingly common, and the laws continually evolving. Divorce laws have changed dramatically over the last 20-30 years and much of the evolution of the laws have been around ensuring the wife and children are adequately provided for. Once again this is the principal of equity at work. The good news is that divorce disputes are increasingly resolved between lawyers, rather than in court – which in our experience is much more sympathetic to all parties.

IT ALL DATES BACK TO THE MAGNA CARTA The whole point of law and the legal system is that society needs rules to live by. In that respect the English legal system is one of the best in the world. It is even reasonable to the extent that everybody is presumed innocent until they are proved guilty by a jury of their peers. It’s pretty much been like that since King John signed the Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215 and enshrined the ‘freedom of the individual against the arbitrary authority of the despot’.

EQUITY AT WORK – IN THE WORK PLACE Much of the focus of recent law has been on ensuring women are treated on an equitable basis – not just in the family courts but in the workplace. Issues here range from sexual harassment to old-fashioned discrimination and gender-bias. There is a sense that there is still some way to go before women enjoy total equity in employment, but disputes increasingly resolve issues to women’s benefit. Hopefully you live your life comfortably within the law, issue and dispute free. But, if you do ever need a friendly family lawyer simply call us on 01403 337337. Or check out our website.

Cricket Club’s new pavilion buildings project gets going

Nuthurst Cricket Club has started the first phase of the much needed upgrade of its pavilion and storage facilities after many months of preparation, with the help of a Community Initiative Fund grant from West Sussex County Council. The club’s buildings consist of a 1950’s wooden cricket pavilion, which also provided storage and bathroom facilities. After many years of use, the condition of the pavilion has deteriorated, with essential tools and cricket equipment needing a new home prior to the impending demolition of the old

pavilion. The arrival of a brand new equipment store, this March, was a significant milestone in the project. Club Chairman, Kevin Barnes commented: “We would like to thank West Sussex County Council for their generosity in providing us with funding towards the new equipment store, which is a most welcome addition as it will allow us to proceed to the next phase in replacing the existing pavilion. We would also like to thank our team members, who gave their time preparing the ground and base so that the equipment store’s arrival could be made possible”.

The new equipment store will house machinery to maintain the green at Mannings Heath, home of the Nuthurst Cricket Club, along with sports equipment for the club’s Juniors Cricket summer coaching programme, which teaches young people the benefits and value of playing outdoor cricket. Several weekend working parties have been taking place, in all weathers since the autumn, to prepare the base for the new store, with locals kindly donating refreshments to the club members who tirelessly ensured the site would be prepared on time. The current cricket pavilion, unused because of its unsafe condition, will be replaced in due course, with planning having been approved by Horsham District Council. The new pavilion will provide changing rooms, a kitchen, and toilets with disabled and baby changing facilities, plus a community room for, among other uses, the essential cricket tea! Nuthurst Cricket Club has been fundraising towards the project for just over five years and is a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC). The Community Initiative Fund grant provided almost one third of the overall cost of the equipment store, whilst the remainder was raised by the club’s fundraising. Further information on the pavilion plans can be found on Horsham District Council’s website, reference DC/16/2806.

Help Save Historic Clay Shoot

After almost half a century of clay pigeon shooting, the popular Countryman Gun Club is once more under threat and facing closure if new grounds cannot be found. The 100-member club are reaching out to any land owners who may be able to help them find a new location. Membership to the club is made up from a wide variety of community folk, including ladies, gentlemen and younger members from a multitude of hamlets and villages, from Horsham to Worthing. This non-exclusive club offers very low cost shooting, thanks to a dedicated group of shooters who give

their time and expertise freely in keeping with their non-profit making policy. Members have all been upset once more by the news that the club may now be closed. “Two years ago, we were very saddened that our shoot on the Knepp Estate would be coming to a close. Back then, we were fortunately offered a new proposal, which saw the gun club shooting throughout the year, with the exception of July and August. Unfortunately, this situation has now been changed and we have been requested to cease shooting at the end of this year.” said Countryman Gun Club Vice-Chairman James Nugent.

With scoring records dating back to 1972, the Countryman Gun Club have raised £13,090 over the last eight years for local organisations and hospice charities, in addition to continuing the hundred-year-old countryside art of shooting clay pigeons. The club hosts two open shoots each year, six skeet and 12 sporting mornings, plus one have-a-go shoot to complete the season. They have also set up and run the clay shooting at the annual West Grinstead and Ploughing Match for many years. Some of the original members are still shooting today and newer members, especially the younger generation, will sadly be unable to progress with this countryside tradition unless a new location close to Horsham is found. The gun club meets approximately once a fortnight from Easter through to October, with one final Christmas shoot in December. Organisers are now seeking a new site to carry on with the Countryman Gun Club, which ideally needs to be within reasonable distance of Shipley and surrounding villages. If you can help, please contact Vice-Chairman James Nugent at info@thecountrymangunclub.co.uk The Countryman Gun Club would like to thank Sir Charles Burrell for his support since the stewardship of the Knepp Estate passed to him from Sir Walter Burrell in 1985.

Horsham’s vibrant new look for the walk way linking Horsham Town Centre and Horsham Park celebrated an official opening last week. The gateway’s new illustrative panelling shows spring and summer time activities in the town and park, using a family of animal characters which are being referred to as ‘The Townies and The Parkies’. The formal unveiling of the panels saw local businesses from the new operators of the bowling alley, The Rec and Swan Walk

Shopping Centre, and children and staff from Little Monkey’s Nursery, join together with councillors from Horsham District Council, and local artist Katie Wells, to admire the new panels. More details are set to be announced, about exciting plans involving the delightful animal charcters, over the coming months. Katie Wells is a local illustrator living and working in Wisborough Green, West Sussex. She graduated from Bath Spa University with a degree in Graphic Communications. Previously, Katie studied at

Collyer’s College in Horsham. The surrounding countryside of the South Downs national park is a great source of inspiration for the artist’s illustrations. Katie’s work often features woodland and farm animals, usually dressed in little clothes, and her illustrations are created using pen and watercolour. Commenting on the new artistic treatment to the walk way, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, said: “I am delighted so many local children and businesses came along to admire this new improvement to the town and park. “This walk way is an important link for visitors to our park and town centre shoppers. The walkway, therefore, needs to be brightened up.” For the spring half-term, the Council will be developing some children’s trails featuring the animal characters. Details will be announced nearer the time. These trails will see the public become even more engaged with some twenty one animal characters from the panels. Further designs have been commissioned by the Council featuring autumn and winter scenes. These are set to replace the spring scenes in October.

“We are delighted that Sally and James are to be awarded these prestigious national prizes, which are thoroughly deserved. They are talented people who will do great things! It shows that the Access course at Collyer’s has been fantastic preparation for university! Sally Martin, who was also awarded the Collyer’s adult learner of the year prize, is now studying Midwifery at the University of Surrey. James Rackett is studying Adult Nursing, also at Surrey. Sally Kent added: “Sally Martin began studying at Collyer’s in

September 2015, in order to gain her GCSE Biology. On the Access course that followed, she has shown focus, ability and determination form the start, with her clear goal always being to progress to a Midwifery degree. “Sally is very unassuming and modest, and her fellow students often turned to her for support and inspiration! “James Rackett clearly possesses qualities that will mean he is an excellent nurse, and all the tutors feel the same way. We are thrilled that he has accepted the offer for Adult Nursing at Surrey; we are all proud of what James has achieved and are sure he will be a credit to the nursing Profession! The Access courses provide the necessary qualifications for entry to university degrees, and the college offers courses including Nursing and Healthcare Professions (including midwifery) and Health and Social Care Professions. Deputy Principal Steve Martell said: “These brilliant Collyer’s students have demonstrated significant ability, juggled study with other significant commitments and worked really hard. Massive thanks to Sally Kent and the team for another outstanding year!”

Have your say on plans for an exciting play area for Roffey Rec Residents in Horsham District are being invited to give their views on plans to improve this site, known affectionately to many as ‘Roffey Rec’. This important green space is situated in the heart of Roffey in the North Horsham parish. It lies adjacent to Roffey Football ground, the Memorial Cricket Ground, and Broadwood Recreation Ground. The redevelopment of the play area is the first stage of a wider plan to landscape the area, to improve the experience for local residents. Cabinet Member for Community and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “This major redevelopment work represents a substantial investment by Horsham District Council in this well-known recreation area. “We would like to know what

children, young people and parents think about our imaginative new plans for the play park, and gather ideas for improving the surrounding recreation ground. “I would urge as many of you as possible to take part in our consultation to help us shape this important area for the Roffey community.” Visitors are invited to come along to the drop-in consultation sessions: Roffey Recreation Ground Play Area, Leith View Road - Thursday 3 May 3pm to 6pm (subject to weather conditions) Roffey Millennium Hall, Crawley Road - Friday 4 May 3pm to 6pm. Olympic champ toswap paddles for pedals at Vélo South!

Mark Hunter, who won the rowing GOLD medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, will be cycling through Horsham District at the inaugural Vélo South. Since hanging up his oars, Mark has become a keen cyclist, and has leapt at the chance to ride. He’s said to be expecting more ‘tire’ and less ‘tyre’ trouble, on the return to Goodwood, where the event starts and finishes. The 39-year- old, who became

a national hero when he and Zac Purchase won gold in the lightweight double sculls at Beijing, will be one of 15,000 cyclists of all abilities riding the inaugural 100-mile closed-road sportive on Sunday, September 23. Mark, who also won silver at London 2012, has fallen in love with cycling since retiring from competitive rowing and can’t wait to witness the stunning West Sussex countryside from his sad-

dle. With around 1,700 metres of climbing, Vélo South is relatively challenging, but the beauty of the route, including the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park, support from local communities, and camaraderie with fellow riders, will make for an unforgettable day of closed-road riding. Being a big motorsport fan, Mark is also looking forward to starting and finishing the challenge on Goodwood – although he

hopes to leave the motor racing circuit with his tyres intact on this occasion! “Goodwood is an amazing venue, so starting and finishing Vélo South there, and getting to cycle around the circuit, will make this event really special,” said Mark, whose success with Zac in Beijing was Britain’s first-ever lightweight Olympic rowing medal, “I’ve been to Revival at Goodwood and I last visited for the Festival of Speed a couple of years ago. Winning Olympic gold may be the stuff of boyhood dreams, but the only medals Mark has on display at home are those earned completing sportives – and he is looking forward to adding Vélo South to his collection. So where does completing a 100-mile cycle challenge rank among Mark’s global achievements at Olympic Games? “They’re both very different challenges, but challenges nonetheless,” said Mark, “Before an Olympic race, I knew what to expect, and the effect it would have on my body. I had a plan and it was a case of getting from A to B as quickly as possible. “Cycling 100 miles, there are lots of different factors. It takes a lot longer for a start! Also, I’ve never ridden the Vélo South course before. No-one has. I don’t know how tough the hills will be. The weather – be it rain or shine – could also have a big impact. “When you accomplish something to be proud of, it’s a big thing. For example, when I finished the Paris to London cycle event in 2013, I got quite emotional.

The only other Vélo South rider Mark has met before is event ambassador, Martin Johnson CBE, England rugby’s legendary World Cup-winning skipper, and he is looking forward to making new friends. “When I was rowing, I hated cycling with a passion,” revealed Mark, a Freeman of the River Thames who was also awarded the Freedom to the City of London in 2009, “We once did a cross training camp abroad to break up the monotony, but I just didn’t see the point. But when I stopped competing, I began cycling with friends and enjoyed the social element of it. Aside from Ride London, Vélo South is the only other opportunity to ride 100 miles on closed roads in the UK in 2018. All general entry places for Vélo South sold out in just four days, but cyclists can still enter via Lead Charity Partners Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK, Restart Rugby and the British Heart Foundation, or through the Vélo South Business 100 challenge, which offers a VIP experience coupled with exclusive networking opportunities and training events. With thousands of participants travelling from across the UK and abroad to experience Vélo South, the event will help raise the profile of West Sussex towns, villages and countryside, as a great place to visit, and provide a boost for tourism. Cash is King This month our Award Winning Business expert, Janette Whitney gives advice on how to manage cash in difficult times Businesses don’t fail because of a short term lack of profitability; they fail because they run out of cash. To avoid a cash shortage make sure your cash flow plans are regularly updated and are realistic. This means allowing headroom in your cash requirements to counter unexpected variances and to be aware of your current cash position, forecasts and to bear in mind fluctuations. Putting this into practice means you need to focus on the following 4 areas : Manage Your Working Capital: Closely manage your stock and debtors to minimise needs for working capital. Manage your supply chain to gain maximum credit. Talk to creditors early if you need to extend terms. Consider approaching HMRC to agree payment by instalments for past liabilities. Don’t ever commit to buying goods & services when you know you will be unable to pay. This is illegal. Explore Finance Options: Get the right balance between equity, long and short term debt and asset based finance- don’t take on short term borrowings for longterm investments. Examine opportunities for grants & tax credits. Safeguards: Consider credit insurance to remove the threat of bad debts.

If the business is failing, recognize the fact and take professional advice. Don’t operate in a mirage of optimism. If you are confident of recovery, seek new equity, bank or asset-based borrowing. If institutions won’t play ball, try business angels, but don’t feed the dragon! Watch points: Think carefully before committing to a business model that will require further funding down the line, unless that further funding is contracted. Success (e.g. higher sales than forecast) can increase working capital requirements and cause cash shortages- but don’t overtrade. Underperformance (e.g. lower sales, lower margins or higher costs) will adversely affect cash flow. Consider reducing overheads to stop the cash drain, but take care in deciding which areas to cut. Mancini Legal expands into Haywards Heath Keeping law in the family - Allesandro and Vincenza Mancini in the legal library at new acquisition Mulcare Jenkins

Leading Horsham law firm Mancini Legal has expanded its business by acquiring Haywards Heath solicitor Mulcare Jenkins. Whilst a positive move for the family law firm started in

Horsham by Alessandro Mancini in 20xx, it is also something of a nostalgic one – Mulcare Jenkins was the firm he trained with and qualified at following law college. ‘I sent my early years as a

lawyer there,’ Alessandro told the District Post. ‘I know the business, its staff and its customers. The practice very much shares our ‘family law’ ethos, although we will also be offering a broader commercial and corporate base to Haywards Heath. Really and truly it’s a perfect fit.’ The acquisition sees 10 new members of staff join the Mancini group, a resource which Alessandro Mancini sees as essential to support an expanding practice in an area where the huge amount of building adds to the conveyancing load. Mancini is also seeing an increase in the commercial and corporate arena, driven by issues such as the new Data Protection laws that are being adopted on a pan-European basis. Existing customers of the Haywards Heath practice will experience little change in the short term, although the name will change to Mulcare Jenkins – part of the Mancini Legal Group. All other details remain the same.

Winner of £500 community fund announced following campaign 4TheYouth

Horsham community group 4TheYouth has been announced as the lucky recipient of £500 funding, following a county-wide campaign by D.W. Nye Builders Merchant in Kingsfold. D.W. Nye, which will give away £500 each to four different community groups and good causes in the county of Sussex during 2018 as part of the campaign, shortlisted three Horsham causes for the first round of funds. Following a public vote in February, the company has confirmed that 4TheYouth received the majority of the votes and will be presented with £500, which will go

towards equipment for the group’s Saturday club, The Woodland Project. Using a Forest Schools’ approach, the club runs bush craft activities for 8-12 year olds so they can learn skills, such as lighting and managing a fire, whittling, and building natural shelters. Dean Sweet, who is one of the directors at 4TheYouth, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won. £500 will make a huge difference to our group. We will be able to buy cooking equipment and food to support our Woodland Project, and get lots more children out in the fresh air, learning and enjoying themselves.”

Managing Director at D.W. Nye Rex Nye, added: “As a local, family run business, we are really keen to make sure we support the community around us. We are pleased to be presenting 4TheYouth in Horsham with the very first donated funds for our Proud to be Local campaign, and look forward to helping more groups and charities during 2018.” There will be three further opportunities for residents to make nominations for other worthy causes, at dates to be announced throughout the year.

With plans well under way for when the Realm’s most spectacular mediaeval festival returns on the 4th, 5th, 11th & 12th August, The Loxwood Joust is once again delighted to announce its support for two children’s charities, Chestnut Tree House and Challengers. These two well-known charities will be providing entertainment for all in the Children’s Kingdom, with Challengers attending on the 4th and 5th and Chestnut Tree House being at the Joust on the 11th and 12th. For the cost of a mediaeval groat, they are giving children the opportunity to ‘Pelt The

Peasant’, or ‘Pelt The Parent’ as some prefer, with wet sponges. The Loxwood Joust then exchanges all groats for cash and the more peasants pelted, the more funds secured for the charity! The Loxwood Joust has always chosen to support children’s charities and are excited to welcome Challengers into the fold for 2018 and Chestnut Tree House back for their 6th year. Challengers, provides exciting and inclusive play & leisure activities for disabled children and young people in Surrey and the South East, working with approximately 1400 disabled children across

the peasant activities and Louise Moffat from Challengers said “We are so excited to be a part of the Loxwood Joust this year, it’s such a fun and fantastic event!” Jayne Todd, Community Fundraiser at Chestnut Tree House also commented ‘We are thrilled to be a part of the Loxwood Joust again in 2018 and look forward to seeing you all in the Children’s Kingdom!’ So come and join the fun as you step back in time and experience the verve and vigour of a world where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate, at this unique, fun and educational day out for all the family!

AMERICANA LIVE! Free event at The Hawth

Mon 7th May 2018 The Hawth’s Americana Live! offers a free afternoon of music from and inspired by many different styles of American music, from some of the best bands around. American roots, country, folk and everything in between feature in this 6-hour free music celebration. One of the many bands playing at this fantastic event will be Southern Companion, a British take on the Americana/Country genre from musicians who have played with top UK and US artists. Also performing are Society, who will be offering up some of the best country rock around, while showing off their incredible three part harmonies. The Rosellys, who “capture the essence of country, with folk ingredients baked into a transatlantic roots fusion” (R2) will also be performing. In 2015, they released their

first full band album, The Granary Sessions, gathering praise from musicians, critics and audiences alike. The Savannahs, were founded in early 2017, and formed by singer-songwriters Hannah Rose Platt, Emily Moment, and Rebecca Rosewell, creating an alt-country group. Their beautiful harmonies will be performed to a mix of both originals and rootsy covers. Another popular band taking to the stage are My Girl the River, an Americana/roots/folk/alt-country duo telling anecdotes, white lies and fables about the Deep South, love and loss. Inspirational Ags Connolly is a traditional country singer-songwriter from Oxfordshire. Having attempted to write songs for years, Ags found the confidence to take it seriously, after attending a workshop with Nashville super-musician Darrell Scott.

Since then, he’s built a reputation as an inspired songwriter at major festivals, and as a constant presence on the touring circuit. Georgia native, Barbara Nesbitt, who has found her home in music, will sing the songs that reflect her life, as she writes about the ways, large and small, we abandon and seek that elusive safety of home. Rounding up the line up is the wonderful Ben Smith and Jimmy Brewer. Their first gig as a duo was supporting Joan Armatrading in front of a thousand people. They recently showcased at AmericanaFest 2017, in Nashville, and at The Americana Music Association UK Awards. Admission free. Come along to The Hawth and enjoy an afternoon of great music. Event: Sunday 29 April from 1pm, The Hawth Crawley. The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 and www.hawth.co.uk.

Bellway South London enabling ‘smart homes’ in Broadbridge Heath

Bellway South London, a division of Bellway, one of the most successful house builders in the UK, will be providing day one access to gigabit broadband speeds at its new housing development Solomon’s Seal in Broadbridge Heath. It is partnering with Hyperoptic, the UK’s leading residential gigabit broadband provider. Hyperoptic’s full fibre approach enables symmetrical gigabit broadband services – 1,000Mbps – which is over 27x faster than the average speed a UK consumer receives today. With these speeds, HD movies can be downloaded in seconds and families can simultaneously access the Internet, without any frustrat-

ing slow downs, buffering or timeouts. Connectivity is now one of the key factors that inform whether a homebuyer purchases a property. In a survey of 2,000 UK adults by OnePoll, on behalf of Broadband Genie, nearly half (49%) of the respondents said they wouldn’t purchase a property without access to fast broadband. With hyperfast and reliable connectivity, residents can enjoy everything that ‘smart home’ living has to offer, such as Internet controlled thermostats and doorbells, voice-activated assistants, remote monitoring apps and device controlled appliances. Nicky Chapman, Sales Direc-

Quote The District Post when booking

tor for Bellway’s South London division, said: “We’re not surprised that so many people rank a good broadband speed as a must-have. The Internet is now an integral part of our lives, and many of us use it to work from home, to plan our social lives and to stream TV or movies. We appreciate how important it is for buyers that they have a fast broadband connection, and that’s why we’re making sure it’s available for our new residents in Solomon’s Seal.” Hyperoptic customers can choose the service that best suits them, including broadband only (no phone line needed), broadband and phone bundles, 12-month contracts or no contract (just 30 days’ notice, no minimum term) – all at competitive rates. Steve Holford, Chief Customer Officer, Hyperoptic said: “We have a fantastic relationship with Bellway, having already installed our services across nearly 4,000 of its properties elsewhere in the UK. To be included in the initial design and build phase is testament to the value we are delivering. We are currently live across 30 towns and cities – we are thrilled to be expanding our network to Broadbridge Heath via this partnership and giving residents in Solomon’s Seal a word-class broadband experience.”

Residents will be able to access services the day they move in and enjoy the service for free for the first three months. About Hyperoptic Hyperoptic is the UK’s largest residential gigabit broadband provider. The company offers the fastest broadband in the UK and is proudly setting a new fibre ‘gold standard’ with unmatched speed, reliability and customer service. Its hyperfast, symmetrical gigabit services are over 27x faster than the average speed a UK consumer receives today. Hyperoptic works with property owners, developers and professionals, designing and installing dedicated fibre infrastructure to new buildings and existing developments. Its services are currently available to consumers and businesses across 30 cities and towns across the UK. It aims to have its hyperfast service available to over two million homes by 2022 and five million homes by 2025. Founded in 2011, the company has been recognised as the ‘Best Superfast Broadband’ provider by the Internet Service Providers’ Association for the last five years in a row and was crowned the “Most Innovative Provider” in the 2017 Broadband Genie home broadband survey. Horsham shine in National Cup – mixed team through

Under 14’s

Photos by Sue Chin

Under 21’s

Sunday April 22 – National Cup Quarter Final Horsham Mixed Team 3 3 Havering - Horsham win 4-2 on Penalty flicks Horsham U14s & U21 boys also in finals action Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s Mixed hockey team booked their appearance at finals weekend at the Lee Valley Olympic Park on June 2nd &

3rd after their hard fought win against the London Borough of Havering Mixed XI in last Sunday’s Quarter Final. Horsham went two nil down in the first 10 minutes, but after Sam Bugler clawed back the deficit, Havering scored again to lead 3-1 at the break. The second half, though, belonged to Horsham with honours even at full time following another goal from Bugler and the evergreen Ian Brown. Horsham then romped home in the penalty shoot out – Horsham

keeper Jack Edgerton saved two Havering flicks but Horsham were bang on target with four out of four successes from Bugler, Joey Humphreys, Charlotte (CJ) White and Johnnie Dale. Horsham’s mixed Hockey Captaincy is shared between CJ and Joey, CJ telling the District Post: “This was a great game with our good team performance seeing us through – fingers crossed for more of the same at finals weekend!” Joey added: “Once we got into the game we played better mixed hockey and were all over them in the second half!” Meanwhile, Horsham junior sides were also in cup action – Horsham Hotsticks got through to the U14s Development Cup Final, Sue Chinn saying: “Our boys are the youngest in the league this season with many just 12 years old. On the day we lost to East Grinstead who fielded a team of older relative giants. Our boys played their hearts out and although they lost 6-1 we are extremely proud of them for making the final – and the future of Horsham Hockey bodes well. To put the boy’s performance into perspective, the week before East Grinstead beat Worthing 26-0 (yes, twenty six nil!), so our boys were fabulous.” Jerry Chinn also coaches the Horsham U21 side, who were initially shaded out of their cup on goal difference, but beneficiaries Mid Sussex subsequently pulled out of the finals allowing Horsham back in to take on Eastbourne at very short notice, whom they had beaten 1-0 in the qualifiers, Sue Chinn explaining: “We managed to get four boys back from University even though they had just returned there from their Easter break – Jack Cardwell, Noah Chinn, Ryan Eason-Butler and Austin Harwood-Stamper making the trip. We were still short of a couple of players and, sadly, after winning the tournament twice in recent years, we finished as runners up, losing 6-2 in sweltering conditions. Peter Neave and Jacob Ball were our scorers. Peter and Tim Upchurch will not be eligible next year but the remainder of the boys will be and we’re very keen to get the cup back!”

Horsham District celebrates more Sussex cup successes Local Sport Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA Football team’s forthcoming cup final underlines the extraordinary cup success story for Horsham’s sporting teams – Horsham Rugby Football Club First XV has won the Sussex Cup for the last four years and are in the cup final again (on April 28th), Horsham Men’s and Ladies Hockey 1st XIs will be defending their Sussex Cup titles shortly and

Roffey Cricket Club is the reigning Sussex Cup champion after taking over the title from Horsham Cricket Club, who won it again in 2016. YMCA, the latest of our local county cup finalists are celebrating a highly successful cup season for YM teams. The Under 21 side has already won their cup final, the reserves got as far as the semi in their competition and now the senior side are in the Peter Bentley final – at Hassocks

against current league leaders Haywards Heath on the early May Bank Holiday – Monday 7th, 11am kick off. YM’s most recent cup success confirms what we already knew – that Horsham is a proper sporting town and must now surely be the envy of other hopeful but less successful places across West and East Sussex. From everybody at the District Post – a big well done Horsham town, rulers of the county’s cup roost!

Horsham win the Sussex Cup – three in a row! Saturday April 22 – Sussex Senior Cup Final Horsham Men’s 1st XI 6 3 Lewes Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s Men won the Sussex Cup again, notching up a hat trick of wins in front of a large crowd at Eastbourne, laying the ghost of their goal drought throughout the league campaign. Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “After our disappointing season it was great to retain the Sussex Senior Cup for the third successive year. It was a long match, very feisty with blood injuries – Sam Gill’s eye getting in the way of some action - and plenty of drama, but it did the boys a power of good! And for Angus Donaldson to get 4 goals was very special.” As has been their custom of late, Horsham conceded early, porous defence giving Andrew Isaacs no chance in the Horsham goal. However, as if to the manor born,

Horsham responded, soon asserting control over their lower league rivals. Donaldson equalised, then, James Groves unleashed an exquisite reverse stick bombshell that found the net after almost decapitating the Lewes keeper, before Donaldson pirouetted, crashing the ball home to give Horsham a 3-1 lead at the break. Resuming, Horsham relaxed – enabling Lewes back in to the game, but after they drew level Horsham’s experienced mid field trio of Freddie Campbell, Sean Pearcy and Rob Turnbull took command until a long ball penetrated the Lewes defence, allowing Donaldson to complete a fine hat trick, restoring Horsham’s lead. The umpire penalised both sides with yellow cards, but Horsham took this in their stride, Marshall putting them further ahead with a backwards flick before Barney Knights-Johnson launched one of his trademark runs to cross for the thrusting Donaldson to rack up his fourth goal, cementing Horsham’s 6-3 win.

The cricket season is under way! Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter The weather has finally relented, grounds are drying out pitches and outfields are being nurtured – the new season starts in earnest this Saturday, when Horsham host Haywards Heath in the Sussex T20 Cup and Roffey visit Billingshurst in the same competition. After tuning in with century in Horsham’s winning friendly against Worthing last Saturday Captain Michael Thornely told the District Post: “We were good in patches last season but we need more consistency and commitment. Clearly we shall miss Michael Munday – any club would, but we’ve signed spinner Joey Ashmore from Bognor, he took 47 wickets for them last season and bowled well in the friendly and can bat, too. It is good to attract young players who want to improve themselves and I’m hoping that we can bring in one or two other players, too.” Horsham Cricket Chairman Richard Marshall says: “Losing Munday is a huge dent, but Mika Ekstrom returns as our overseas player – it’ll be a big season for him with bat and ball – and we’ll have young allrounder Nick Oxley back with us and Tom Clark, too - in June when he’s free of school games. So, if Sussex release Will Beer and Tom Haines when they’re not on first team duty we should give a good account of ourselves.” Roffey skipper Matt Davies has just returned from a successful winter’s cricket in Australia with over 650 runs and plenty of wicket keeping under his belt. Theo Rivers was also in Australia, while Usman Khan has been playing in Pakistan and Rohit Jagota in India. Davies told us: “We’ve retained all of our players and the team has been practising hard, so we’ve been doing as well as we can and Ben Manenti returns as our overseas – he’s just got 500 runs and 50 wickets in all formats of Australian A grade cricket and should be full of confidence.” Coach Simon Fearnley has been

masterminding Roffey’s preparation, adding: “We had a pre season friendly against Hartley Country Club in Kent – they’re a useful outfit and we beat them despite not having our full side out. Theo got 98 and Luke Barnard took five wickets so we’ve got off to a good start! Ben Manenti will be with us for the whole season, which is a great benefit and I’m optimistic that we’ll be challenging for a trophy again.” Billingshurst have excellent facilities and make no secret of their desire to return to the Sussex Premier League after two previous seasons in the top flight. For the first few weeks of the season Skipper Tom Haynes will be travelling from Loughborough University to lead the side and told us: “We’ve had a busy winter strengthening our squad to boost our seasoned regulars – Aussie wicket keeper batsman Jake Cross is our overseas player and we’ve signed up former Sussex and Warwickshire player Andy Miller, who will open the bowling. We’ve also taken on Worthing bowler Jamie Piper, a batsman spinner, Louis Storey a county U16 player from East Preston, along with Paul Osborne from Southwater and we’ve got one or two other possibilities in the pipeline. Last season we looked like mounting a serious promotion challenge, but faded when it really mattered, so we’ve looked to strengthen the team all round.” Billingshurst clearly mean business and host Roffey in the first round of the Sussex Cup this Saturday, when Horsham entertain Haywards Heath. The Premier League starts the following Saturday, May 5th, when Horsham will be at East Grinstead and Roffey visit Middleton. The highly regrettable clash of features will continue throughout the season with Horsham’s first home game against Preston Nomads on May 12th when Roffey welcome East Grinstead. Horsham play Roffey at Cricketfield Road on June 30th with the return fixture on the last day of the season – September 1st.

Hornets’ Kent visit ends in hat trick of defeats Saturday April 21 – Bostik Football League South Division VCD Athletic 2 1 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s visit to the Vickers ground at The Oakwood in Crayford, Kent ended with the Hornets’ third defeat on the trot. Apart from being obliged to play home fixtures under a distant ground share arrangement, Horsham have been ravaged by injuries all season and, crucially, have often found themselves chasing the game after conceding an early goal – a fate they suffered again in this, their penultimate fixture of the season, Jeffery Gyamfi penetrating the defence to score in the ninth minute. VCD might have promptly doubled their lead, but the Hornets’ defence rallied to avert the threat. Horsham were able to mount few attacks – until George Landais’ free kick created an opportunity, but Dean Bown was just off target. A dropped ball

might have gifted VCD a second goal but Gyfami shot was adrift, leaving his side 1-0 ahead at the break. Horsham

Manager Dom di Paola rang the changes during the interval but the Hornets soon went further behind, when a VCD long ball incursion ended at the feet of Alfie Cue, who, despite being slightly off cue, neverthe-

less did enough to score, giving his side a telling 2 nil cushion. Frustration boiled over resulting in a trio of yellow cards before Bown unleashed a just wayward strike. VCD, though, were keen to put the game to bed and Horsham had narrow squeaks when first Cue nodded over and then Rashid Kamara got through but was unable to finish. It was, however, Horsham who scored the final goal when Joe Shelley’s header was deflected away for a corner, from which he headed home in style. With only pride left to play for, 15th placed Horsham’s final game of the season is against Whyteleafe (10th) at Lancing on Saturday. Horsham beat Whyteleafe in Surrey in January, but the Hornets’ subsequent erratic form suggests that the encounter might be closer in this return fixture. Meanwhile, with a game each to play, Carshalton Athletic top the table with 99 points with Lewes breathing down their necks on 98.

YMCA goal drought continues in disappointing defeat

Saturday April 21 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Haywards Heath Town 2 0 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA had previously beaten Haywards Heath at Gorings Mead, but their roller coaster season continued at Hanbury Park with a disappointing loss against the league leaders. There was, though, little to choose between the sides. The only difference was that Haywards Heath scored a goal in each half, but YM’s goal drought continued their long strong run taking them clear at the top of the table coming to a halt six games ago, since

when with promotion beckoning they have scored just two points and slipped to fifth in the table. As ever YM travelling support did them proud – especially Membership Secretary Keith Holmes, who, on the hottest day of the year, walked to Haywards Heath from Horsham arriving right on cue for the start to see YM playing themselves into the game with a cross that Dave Brown was unable to maximise before Dan Evans’ attempt was caught by the keeper. Heath responded immediately with a breakaway, Melford Simpson heading home a wide cross to give them the lead in the 16th minute. Then, YM survived a scare, keeper Aaron Jeal’s full length diving save keeping out a one on one chance. Heath’s second corner was headed wide

and, when action switched to the other end, Josh Heyburn in the Heath goal made a routine catch. YM continued to push, but the first half ended with them trailing by the single goal after a Phil Johnson foray, and free kicks from Mark Cave and Luke Gedling had come to nought – Gedling’s curler hitting the top of the side netting. Johnson was tripped soon after the resumption but the free kick was safely negated – and, after a drinks break and interminable discussions between the referee and linesman a dipping Heath free kick went just over the bar. Sam Schaaf came on for Cave but YM’s efforts continued to fizzle out – Johnson combining with Brown and then Tony Garrod and a Gedling set piece all failing to produce an equaliser. A Heath free kick disappeared harmlessly and their shot ballooned over, then Garrod’s first time strike and Gedling’s free kick proved unthreatening. Heath were finessing in front of goal to no effect and a promising YM build up culminated with Brown firing over. Then, in extra time, a Heath goal kick right down the ground was latched onto by Simpson - whose illegal signing last season cost Heath a points deduction preventing their promotion – for the massive centre forward to score again with assistance from the right upright. This was a very even, close game, Heath winning with two well taken opportunist goals and with no criticism of YM. For some reason Heath left the field to the strains of The Great Escape – We Are the Champions is surely more appropriate.

Broadbridge Heath win again to secure league status Saturday April 21 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 2 0 Hassocks Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath banished any lingering, improbable fears of relegation with an enjoyable win over 17th placed Hassocks, avenging the 3-2 defeat earlier in the season. Heath – the Bears – might well have scored in the opening minutes, but Hassocks keeper Nathan Strongberg pulled out the stops to keep out Javlon Campbell’s long range dipper. And, Strongberg was in action again to negate Gicu Iordache’s free kick. After a quarter of an hour, Stuart Chester nodded over George Cousins’ corner, then Strongberg dived to push Iordache’s shot onto the post and away. Heath were nearly made to regret those unfulfilled opportunities when Martyn Flack deflected a strike from Hassocks’ Bradley Bant, but the first half ended goal-less.

On resumption Devon Fender immediately fired through Hassocks’ defence, only to see Strongberg gather safely, but, five minutes later Iordache latched onto Flack’s supply and got round two defenders before slotting the ball home. Heath created further possibilities, a Fender strike going over the bar from close range, Iordache seeing his well directed shot pushed away and Alex Parsons’ header from a corner being too high. Meanwhile, Heath keeper Michael Chester successfully negotiated two distant attempts from George Galbraithe-Gibbons. Fender, though, took advantage of a rare Strongberg blemish after a botched clearance was passed to him by Iordache, Fender notching up his 23rd goal of the season despite missing half of the campaign through injury, Heath completing a much-relished comfortable win. After Tuesday’s local derby at the Leisure Centre against Horsham YMCA, Broadbridge Heath’s final game of the season is a visit to 14th in the table AFC Uckfield.

YMCA squeeze past Heath in gritty end of season game Tuesday April 24 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 2 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Bragging rights are usually up for grabs in local derbies but, in truth, neither side had too much to brag about in this workmanlike game, which ended with both sides somewhat relieved – YMCA because they notched up their first win since March 17th, and Broadbridge Heath because with such a depleted side they might have anticipated a drubbing, having lost 4-0 at Gorings Mead in February. Heath made the early running, Devon Fender’s shot being caught by YM keeper Aaron Jeal, who also latched onto a header from Alex Parsons’ free kick. Then, Tom Fuller broke through, but the ball was cleared for a Heath corner, again pouched by Jeal. Phil Johnson was making inroads for YM, earning a corner but neither side looked particularly threatening. Although, midway through the first half YM were getting more possession they were unable to capitalise on the chances created, until, in the 33rd minute, Tony Garrod’s cross from the left was headed in by Dave Brown. Johnson and Brown were combining with promising forays but another cor-

ner came and went before Heath had two strong shots approaching the break, Fuller’s long range volley testing Jeal, who then had to stretch himself to keep George Cousins’ strike at bay. Immediately after the re-start Heath equalised when Stuart Chester headed the ball out of Jeal’s grasp. Cousin’s shot was then pushed off for a Heath corner before YM responded, firstly when Garrod broke through but fired wide and then with two unrewarded corners in quick succession, Heath keeper Connor Evento tipping the ball over for the first. Action switched to the other end, but Heath were unable to take advantage of poor defending - Shaun Findlay was off target, before Fender charged forward, only to see the onrushing Jeal save with his feet. Evento then had to smother a ball that sailed through the Heath defence and, with YM revitalised, a corner came to nought and Garrod scythed through but shot well wide. But, with 15 minutes of full time left, Evento could only parry a YM strike and Brown was on hand to score the winning goal for YM. Heath had chances to draw level but - after Jeal caught and cleared - a golden one on one opportunity went begging just ahead of the final whistle. If either side had been able to finish off opportunities the scoreline would have been very different.

Horsham breeze through to the National Semi Final

Photos by jeremy Allen

Sunday March 4 – RFU National Under 18s Cup Quarter Final Horsham 32 13 Worcester Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Worcester is rugby territory so Horsham were expecting a tough game, but in the event they won relatively comfortably after going ahead in the opening salvos and retaining the lead throughout. The Horsham team took the field to a roar of encouragement from the huge crowd and the spectators were excited to see an immediate Horsham break down the left. Tackling well to retain possession, Horsham had

a line out close to posts and won the maul for Vince Everitt to get over the line, Joe Blake converting. The dry ball and firm ground suited Horsham’s style of play and, in the 16th minute, following a blistering run, Everitt scored again, Blake obliging with the kick. Worcester responded with an immediate kick and gather getting over for an unconverted try with their first threatening move. Suddenly energised, Worcester retained ground but chose to kick a penalty for possession rather than points and with Horsham defending stoutly they were unable to claw back the deficit until they had success with a further, late, penalty. Right on half time Horsham elected to kick

for touch, eschewing the possibility of three more points, but they led 14-8 at the break. Straight from the re-start Horsham broke through, but a dropped ball robbed them of a seemingly certain try. Within three minutes, though, a Blake penalty increased the home lead, just ahead of an outstanding catch on the right enabling Connor Riley to dash through for Horsham’s third try and when Blake completed the kick, Horsham were 24-8 to the good. A subsequent long range Horsham penalty did not quite have the legs and another long home run stopped just short of the posts. But, a further Horsham try was soon delivered when Blake grabbed the

ball and smashed over, the kick failed, but with Horsham leading by 21 points and the clock running down, that mattered not. It had been a clean game up to now but Worcester’s frustration overheated, reducing both sides to 14 apiece. Although Horsham’s domination of possession continued, Worcester got over the line, but were thwarted by a forward pass. Horsham then added three more points with a long range Blake penalty, before, at the death Worcester scored a consolation try, finally battering through Horsham’s determined defence. Horsham richly deserved their 32-13 win, which came at a cost of nasty looking injuries to two key players - fly half Aaron Linfield (wrist)

and centre Jem Minto (collar bone), physically strong Worcester and the rock hard pitch taking its toll. Horsham U18s Manager Jeremy Allen told the District Post: “We’d heard that Worcester had top players out there, so that was a fantastic Horsham team performance!” Coach Tony Lewis added: “128 teams entered and we’re through to the last four nationally, so we’re absolutely thrilled. We’ve got some great young players, which bodes really well for the club.” Horsham are rewarded with a semi final visit to Maidenhead on the early May Bank Holiday weekend. In the other semi Sheffield are at home to Tynedale.

YMCA glide through to Peter Bentley Cup Final Wednesday April 18 – Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup – Semi Final Horsham YMCA 3 1 Crawley Down Gatwick – at Hassocks Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YM emerged from a disappointing run of league performances with a confident cup win against workmanlike Crawley Down Gatwick. This was a proper cup semi final – four goals, including two penalties, eight corners, a few bookings, a controversial decision or two, and a bit of tension - all very entertaining! The game marked the 250th appearance of popular defender Dan Evans and celebrates a highly success-

ful cup season for YM teams, and now the senior side are in the Peter Bentley final – at Hassocks against current league leaders Haywards Heath on the early May Bank Holiday – Monday 7th, 11am kick off. When YM came to Hassocks for a league match a month ago it was bitterly cold with the Downs around the Jack and Jill windmills above the ground glistening in the snow, but Wednesday night was pleasantly warm, the floodlit game starting under blue skies. Crawley Down Gatwick opened with a corner but YM responded with four of their own within the first ten minutes, and under YM pressure CDG keeper Seb Bos was yellow carded. Both sides were creating chances, especially YM but the radar was adrift – until,

mid way through the half, YM persistence was rewarded despite dogged CDG defending, when Mark Cave’s header found the net. Five minutes later Bos was fortunate to stay on the pitch after rushing out to floor Phil Johnson, Dean Carden making no mistake from the spot to double YM’s lead. And, when YM got the ball home from a goalmouth melee they appeared to have the game sewn up, but the goal was disallowed after the referee had consulted the linesman, whose flag had remained down. Action immediately switched to the other end, where CDG were promptly awarded a penalty - with YM protests that the incident had occurred outside the box going unheeded - and when

Williams Peaurowe nonchalantly converted, YM’s potential 3-0 lead was suddenly reduced to 2-1. But, the first half ended on that score after Dave Brown had been crunched on both the right of the pitch and the left with the resultant free kicks bearing no fruit. YM restarted with an immediate corner, before, three minutes later, Johnson broke through - his shot was parried out to Brown on the left to put YM 3-1 up. Both sides kept pushing to no avail, CDG bringing subs on and throwing the kitchen sink at YM in an endeavour to keep their cup dreams alive. A poor clearance enabled CDG to get a shot in but YM were reprieved when it went behind via the outside of the upright. With five minutes

remaining CDG blasted straight at Aaron Jeal in the YM goal and were unable to convert the rebound. YM had an unrequited corner before at the very death after a goalmouth scramble CDG’s last scoring opportunity went out off the crossbar, leaving YM worthy winners, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “Great to get through to the final – when we play football we score goals and win!”, Dave Brown adding: “After recent results that’s what we needed!” In the previous rounds YM amassed 12 goals, keeping a clean sheet on each occasion. Extra time and a penalty shoot out were scheduled in the event of deadlock in the semi final, but YM deemed such arrangements unnecessary.
