Topping out ceremony marks a major milestone for new BBH leisure centre Horsham District’s new £12.3 million leisure centre The Bridge, Broadbridge Heath, reached a key milestone last week (week commencing 23 April) when it was officially topped out. Senior councillors and officers from Horsham District Council, key members of existing leisure centre user groups, and leaders from Neilcott Construction, joined together for the landmark event. Leader of the Council, Cllr Ray Dawe, laid a commemorative plaque, and Chairman of the Council, Cllr Peter Burgess, anointed a symbolic tree, which will be planted in the grounds of the new centre when the building works are complete. Representatives from the Council and key organisations, and user groups involved in the delivery of the centre, then enjoyed a tour of the new centre, escorted by Neilcott Construction. Due to open this autumn, the development is one of the Council’s most significant investments in years, and will deliver one of the biggest public dry-side sports and leisure centre in the district. It will see a major new facility built to replace the existing Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. The fantastic new facility will include a six court sports hall, an 80-station gym, a cycle studio, three fitness studios, and five
multi-use games areas. A new clip and climb facility and café, a sensory room, a treatment room for beauty and sports therapy sessions, and new changing facilities for indoor and outdoor activity, including a Changing Places disabled changing facility, are also included.

Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, commented on the achievement so far: “I am delighted that, after the years of planning and preparation that have gone into such a major project, we are now at this exciting stage where it is nearing its completion.
“The new leisure centre represents one of the most significant investments in the Council’s history. “We have worked extensively with partners and local sports clubs to develop a new sports and leisure which will meet, and exceed, the current and future

Applications open to become a firefighter in West Sussex On Tuesday (1 May) West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service launched a recruitment drive for Wholetime Community Firefighters. Potential applicants can register an interest in applying, and find out more about the recruitment process, by visiting: www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire. The role of the fire service has changed considerably over recent years, and there is now a much greater emphasis on engaging with communities and working proactively to prevent emergencies. Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to start a career serving our communities, by working together to prevent emergencies and by providing a first class response when incidents do occur. “We want to ensure our teams reflect the area we serve, as well as the qualities required for the job, and hope to receive applications from all sectors of our communities to join our fire service
family.” The fire service would particularly welcome applications from women, people who are black, Asian, or minority ethnic, and from the LGBT community within West Sussex, as these groups are currently under-represented in its operational service. The recruitment drive is being undertaken in partnership with Surrey Fire & Rescue Service, and will see Surrey and East Sussex fire and rescue services join forces with West Sussex, to train the new recruits once the selection process has been completed. The deadline for submitting an application is May 30. For more information, see: www. westsussex.gov.uk/fire. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is at the heart of West Sussex County Council’s Communities and Public Protection Directorate, working to support communities to become safer, stronger and more resilient through a combination of prevention, protection and response activities.

Gatton Manor gets a new lease of life thanks to local entrepreneur Popular hotel and golf venue, Gatton Manor, has been given a new lease of life, thanks to local entrepreneur, Les Edgar. The venue, set in the village of Ockley, just off the A29, closed in October 2017, after development plans to turn the site into a Health and Wellbeing Medispa were rejected by Mole Valley District Council. “Living in the local area” Les explained “I have to admit I had always had a passing interest in acquiring Gatton Manor with a view to offering a high quality hotel, spa and hotel experience in the Surrey Hills. When this opportunity came along it was just too good to miss”. Mr Edgar, who was a pioneer in the computer gaming arena, already has experience in the hospitality industry, as he and wife Nadia, are the owners of the iconic pub, The Parrot at Forest Green. The couple now have exciting plans for the future of Gatton Manor. “The golf course at Gatton has always had an excellent reputation as being one of the best golf courses in the South East, and my intention is that the hotel and leisure facilities be bought up to this standard. However, this is going to take time to achieve. We have opened the course and club-
house and the hotel will reopen within the coming weeks. “Bookings are currently being taken for weddings and events and the clubhouse is now open for everyone to enjoy our breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings, especially our fantastic Sunday roasts which are now being served.” Rob Weston, heading up operations, added: “It’s an exciting time; we are building a new team, and look forward to welcoming back golf societies and green fee players” “We are offering a range of memberships, including 7 day adult memberships from £599, and can’t wait to open the doors - not only to those who know us of old, but also to those discovering us for the first time, in particular, golfers who are needing advice from our Professional team, and, in particular, the younger generation wanting to join the Academy. “We have an ambitious improvement plan, we intend to make Gatton Manor a must visit destination”. Further information can be found online at www.gattonmanor .co.uk To book a tee time or discuss your golf membership, please call the Pro Shop on 01306 627595.

Marathon runner raises an amazing £28,000 for cancer charity in memory of his dad
A man who lost his father to cancer has raised an incredible £28,000 in his memory for The Prostate Cancer Research Centre, surpassing his target amount of £26,000, after successfully completing the Virgin London Marathon for a second consecutive year. Aaron McSkimming, from AD Bly Construction, completed the colossal course in five hours and 16 minutes. Running alongside him were his cousin, Kevin McSkimming, and colleague, Marc Hilton. All of them were supported and cheered on by long-standing supplier - Horsham groundworks and materials specialist, Rudridge. After his father tragically passed away in August 2015 fol-

lowing a two-year battle with the disease, Aaron felt compelled to do something to help raise awareness of the deadly illness. He heroically completed his first marathon in 2017, raising more than £26,500 in the process, meaning he has raised an astounding £28,000 for the charity to date. Aaron commented: “I had no idea until my father went through his battle with prostate cancer how common the disease is, or how it could even affect us. It causes a great deal of pain, removing a man’s dignity and independence. It’s an awful experience, not just for the person going through it, but also for their close family and friends who have to witness their suffering.
“After running last year’s marathon, I was determined to repeat the task. This year was tough, despite my previous experience, but having my running mates alongside me, and support from Rudridge, made it so much easier.” Darren Price, Group Operations Manager at Rudridge, added: “Huge congratulations to Aaron, Kevin and Marc on their epic achievement. We are so proud of them, and everything they have done to raise vital awareness and funds for such an important cause. They are truly incredible.” All funds raised by Aaron, Kevin and Marc will go to The Prostate Cancer Research Centre. To find out more, visit: www.prostatecancer-research.org.uk/.

Man wanted for sexual assault
Officers have released an efit in a bid to trace a man for a sexual assault in Horsham. The victim, a 23-year-old woman, was walking along Brighton Road in Horsham at around half past midnight on Saturday, April 14, when she was grabbed by a man near to the junction with Gorings Mead. He grabbed her around the neck and pulled at her
clothing. She kicked him, and ran home and called the police. The woman was able to describe the man well enough for an efit to be put together. He is described as tall with blonde hair, blue eyes, stubble, medium build, black shoes with laces, tight blue jeans with a brown belt and a blue polo top with a yellow symbol on the left of the chest. He had a grey Nike jacket on and was late 20s to early 30s. She described him as smelling of Malibu, cigarettes and Calvin Klein. He had a scar on the right side of his stomach and possibly had a pierced tongue. Detective constable Kai Murray said: “The victim was extremely shaken by the incident and has been able to help us with this clear description. “Were you driving through Horsham and see anything which may be able to help us? Or do you recognise this man? Please contact us.” Information can be reported online quoting serial 86 of 14/04.

Mediaeval Knights clash in battle at the Horsham English Festival
Fully armoured Mediaeval Knights will clash in battle on Sunday 13th May, as part of Horsham’s English Festival. Demonstrating some of the treats in store at their two weekends of mediaeval mayhem in August, The Loxwood Joust is bringing a glimpse of the Middle Ages to the Market Place. Throughout the day in the demonstration area outside Bills café and restaurant, armoured knights will provide displays of weaponry and combat. In addition there will be talks on the weapons, showing
Bank Holiday Monday 7th May
how and what they were used for and always eager to answer questions, or provide information on their characters, these fine ‘battle ready’ knights will also be available to pose for any photos that may require ‘a knight in shining armour’! And don’t miss your chance to engage the services of the barber surgeon who will be on hand to care for our knights before and after battle. Surgery was rarely taken on by physicians in mediaeval times, but instead by the barbers who had a ready supply of razors for their
trade, and were therefore called upon for numerous tasks ranging from cutting hair to amputating limbs! In addition, a mediaeval blacksmith will be demonstrating the skills of his trade, The Dark Archer will be seeking out his mark and Horsham Hog Roast will be tempting visitors with its mouthwatering fayre to alleviate any ‘battle weary’ hunger pangs. However, no mediaeval event would be complete without the traditional bottle of mead and The Loxwood Joust’s own meads, Traditional, Tournament and Christmas blends, will be available for purchase from the information stand, along with a selection of children’s toy armour and weaponry. The Loxwood Joust will be stepping back in time again on the 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th August, so that you may fully experience the verve and vigour of a world where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate. Located at the enchanted Loxwood Meadow, The Loxwood Joust is the most spectacular mediaeval festival in the Realm and provides unique, fun and educational days out for all the family with its unrivalled programme of mediaeval mayhem. So, come and find us at Horsham’s English Festival to find out more!

Horsham Garden Music Festival representatives explained that it is a not for profit organisation established in 2012. The events are free
to enter, and rely on the generosity of those who donate to collection boxes, buy raffle tickets or purchase goods from HGMF chosen vendors: “The continued support of Sponsors and Grant Funders also enables us to continue our work and we would like to sincerely thank: “Woodstock IT Services, James for Carpets, Wells Independent Property Brokers, Hello Horsham, Coole Bevis, Horsham Car Centre and Horsham Folk Club. “Grant Funding has kindly come from West Sussex County Council, The Humphrey Richardson Taylor Charitable Trust and Tesco Bags of Help (so don’t forget to look out for a chance to vote for us in your local Tesco store). “We’re still looking for sponsorship and ask any local businesses or organisations to get in touch if they have an interest in putting their name to this established fixture in Horsham’s annual calendar. “The festival also needs more event volunteers. If you think you have what it takes to help run this community festival, please get in touch.” For up to date information on performers, timings, sponsors, volunteering or anything HGMFrelated, please visit: www.horshamgardenmusicfestival.co.uk or Facebook. Walking bus in Pulborough
Pulborough Parish Neighbourhood Wardens, St Mary’s Primary School staff, parents, and PTA members have come together to successfully set up a ‘walking bus’ to help with their morning school run. The initiative resulted from complaints received from parents about the volume of traffic and poor parking around the school in the morning drop off and afternoon collection times. Neighbourhood Wardens, Carol Boniface and Vanessa Green, alongside school staff, addressed parents at a recent school parents’ evening to encourage people to make use

of the walking bus, and to consider more carefully where they park during the school run hours. Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, said: “I am delighted that the community has worked together to support this initiative. “It is such a simple and effective way to improve fitness levels, whilst at the same time promoting road safety, and it benefits the school’s relationship with the local community. “All this, and it costs virtually nothing to set up and maintain.”
Pulborough is lucky to have a large, free car park by the Sports and Social Club, which is only a five minute walk across the recreation ground to the school. Parents/carers can leave their child with trained, authorised staff anytime between 08.15 and 08.30 at the Sports and Social Club, where they will be safely walked to the school at 08.30, in readiness for the 08.45 start to the school day. If the recreation ground is a little wet, then the walking bus will take a pavement route. Parents and carers are welcome to walk with their children if they wish. The children walking on the bus will receive badges to show their commitment to the school’s walking bus scheme, while other children, consistently walking to school from home, will receive different badges. For more information or to offer to volunteer to help, please contact the school: 01798 872007 or email: office@st-maryspulborough.w-sussex.sch.uk. Alternatively, contact the Pulborough Parish Neighbourhood Wardens on 07584 337475/6 or pulborough.wardens@horsham. gov.uk or follow their tweets on @horshamwardens. Don’t forget that it’s National Walk to School week from 21 May, so be prepared to get your walking shoes on!
NHS plea to get ready for the bank holiday weekend In the run-up to the May Day bank holiday weekend (5-7 May 2018) the local NHS is asking everyone to plan ahead to ensure they have all medications they need to stay healthy until normal opening hours resume on Tuesday 8 May. NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG Head of Medicines Management, Jay Voralia, explained: “It is important you make sure you order any prescriptions in good time to allow you to pick up your medication before the weekend, as GP practices and many pharmacies will close over bank holiday. We see many patients who have not ordered their medication sufficiently far in advance, and have then not left enough time to collect it before the pharmacy closes for the holiday period”. If you need help over the bank holiday when your GP surgery or pharmacy is closed, call NHS 111 or visit nhs.uk/Service-Search/ Pharmacy/LocationSearch/10 to locate your next nearest pharmacy and ring ahead to check holiday opening hours. Choose wisely when it’s not an emergency Across the UK, up to 40% of A&E attendances could be better dealt with elsewhere. As we approach the long weekend, choosing
wisely when it’s not an emergency not only helps hospitals under pressure to give prompt attention to those most in need, it means you will face shorter waits and get seen quicker, closer to home and in turn HelpMyNHS by you and your loved ones get the right care, at the right time, in the right place; visit https://www.sussexhelpmy.nhs.uk/. The Urgent Care Centre at Crawley Hospital is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to treat most injuries or illnesses that are not life threatening, including chest infections, sprains and strains, broken bones, minor burns and scalds, minor head and eye injuries. East Grinstead MIU, located at Queen Victoria Hospital, is a minor injuries unit run by emergency practitioners who are able to see, diagnose and treat a wide range of minor injuries and ailments for both adults and children over one year old. Open 8am-8pm daily. Dr Minesh Patel, GP and Clinical Chair of Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG says; “Using your local MIU or UTC will save you a potentially long wait at A&E, and allow staff there to concentrate on people with serious, life-threatening conditions.”

Pupils Privileged to Learn from Famous Actor Roger Allam after reading Drama at Manchester University, has gone on to a glittering career, winning the Olivier award twice for Best Actor and once for Best Supporting Actor. Christ’s Hospital’s Director of Drama, John Johnson, was
This opportunity gave the pupils a real insight into an actor’s approach to playing one of Shakespeare’s seminal roles On 20 April, sixth form drama pupils at Christ’s Hospital had the privilege of working with the brilliant actor Roger Allam, Old Blue (former pupil), who has a long and impressive career working in theatre, film and television (well known for his roles in ‘Endeavour’ and ‘Game of Thrones’). The workshop focused on ‘The Tempest’, with Roger drawing on his work as ‘Prospero’ in the Globe production of the play in 2013. The pupils worked on the famous ‘We are such stuff as

dreams are made of...’ from Act 4, Scene 1, where Prospero follows the ‘Masque’ with a philosophical speech to his daughter and son in law. This was followed by a question and answer session about interpreting the play, as well as the social and historical context of Shakespeare’s writing. The pupils then quizzed Roger on his varied career with ‘The Book Thief’ and ‘The Thick of It’ fans equally interested. Roger Allam was a Christ’s Hospital pupil from 1964 to 1972 and,
delighted that pupils could meet such a distinguished performer: “This opportunity gave the pupils a real insight into an actor’s approach to playing one of Shakespeare’s seminal roles. The fact that Roger was able to find time in his busy schedule is a tribute to his generosity and belief in young people having a passion for studying drama.” Roger was taking time out of his current project, performing in the West End at The Duke of York’s Theatre in David Hare’s ‘The Moderate Soprano.’
Extra funding to support West Sussex veterans Armed forces veterans will be better supported thanks to a funding boost of almost £150,000 for drop-in centres around the South East. The award – from the Ministry of Defence’s Armed Forces Covenant Fund – will go towards expanding local support for former military personnel who often find it harder to access public services. The grant of £147,888 over two years, will be used to enhance existing veteran drop-in centres and set up new ones in areas where they are found to be needed. As well as offering practical advice on things like jobs and housing, the centres foster friendships and help ensure that veterans with mental health difficulties, or social care needs, get the right support. Forces Connect South East, an alliance of public services in Surrey, Hampshire, West and East Sussex, Kent, Medway and
Brighton and Hove, supported the bid and helped West Sussex County Council secure the funding. Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “It is so important that veterans are given the support they need and deserve so I am incredibly pleased to hear about this funding. “It will go a long way towards improving and increasing the number of drop in centres. These provide vital support and advice for those who’ve served in the military.” Forces Connect South East has already secured £321,000 from the Covenant Fund for a ground-breaking project, which includes initiatives such as training for frontline staff, an app to make it quick and easy for members of the forces to find the right support, and a network of career coaches to help those making the transition to civilian life.

since the first event in 2008. If you have not yet cleared out your wardrobe to make space for your spring/summer 2018 purchases, now is your chance to support the charity. All you need to do is to collect a bag from the Donation Station on the mosaic, take it home and fill with good quality donations of clothes, homewares, books and CDs, then just pop it back when you are next shopping in Horsham. Gill Buchanan, Centre Manager, hopes that this year will be another great success: “Our loyal customers have always been very supportive of what has become a key annual event for the town and this is also the ultimate in recycling too.” All donations will be used, in the first instance, to stock the two Cancer Research UK stores in Horsham’s East Street and West Street, and each bag could be worth up to £30.00 to the charity.

PHVC takes delivery of the UK’s first right-hand drive, factory-built IVECO Daily Line Hi-Matic minibus
Minibus supplier PHVC has taken delivery of the UK’s first righthand drive, factory-built IVECO Daily Line Hi-Matic minibus. The 22-seater has been purchased as a demonstrator to showcase to end-user fleets, with an order for a further 20 vehicles already placed. The Hampshire-based firm, which supplies vehicles to sectors including education, community transport and local authorities, is confident of strong demand for IVECO BUS’ latest offering after customers have driven the minibus. PHVC has spotted a growing market for 22/23-seater vehicles and chose IVECO BUS for the first time because of its class-exclusive eight-speed Hi-Matic transmission which guarantees maximum performance and unbeatable comfort. The launch of the new Daily Line

range also ensures PHVC benefits from the quality and short lead time of factory-built minibuses. Managing Director of PHVC, Paul Huxford, said after trialling an IVECO Daily Hi-Matic his firm will now only buy automatic vehicles, and that the manufacturer’s success in being named International Minibus of the Year 2017, with its Daily Tourys, put them ahead of all their competitors. Huxford explained: “IVECO BUS lent us a 3.5 tonne Daily panel van with Hi-Matic transmission to test out – and it was sublime. We can see why the Daily is becoming so popular. “Another reason we chose IVECO BUS is this vehicle’s 6.5 tonne gross vehicle weight, which makes it very sturdy. With this and the impressive Hi-Matic transmission, it shows IVECO BUS is a major player in the minibus sector. We
are really enthusiastic about this new partnership and are confident we will enjoy a long and fruitful relationship.” The Daily 65C18HA8 was delivered directly from IVECO’s factory in Italy and is powered by the manufacturer’s 3.0 litre Euro VI diesel engine, delivering up to 180 hp. Built on a 4,100mm wheelbase, the vehicle also offers a rear access lift for passengers with disabilities. The Hi-Matic transmission offered by IVECO BUS is also found in premium cars manufactured by sister group companies Jeep and Maserati. Offering absolute driving pleasure, it changes gear more quickly and precisely than even the best driver, needing less than 200 milliseconds for a gear shift when greater acceleration is required. Its proven durability and reliability helps reduce repair and maintenance costs by 10 per cent versus a standard manual transmission. The Daily Line is also available with a Natural Power engine running on compressed natural gas (CNG) – which was a key consideration for PHVC. Huxford added: “A lot of the sectors we supply vehicles to are already looking at alternative fuels. “We expect around 50 per cent of our orders will be for CNG vehicles in five years. So, for us it’s vital to have a good working relationship with the manufacturer which is leading the way in this market.” PHVC has nearly 30 years’ experience in supplying minibuses, commercial vehicles and cars and is one of the largest suppliers of vehicles to the education sector in the UK. It provides a number of sales and funding options to suit all needs.

You’re doing a one-woman music show! That’s unexpected… I’ve never sung – I mean, not publicly – but I wanted to explore what I could sing and we started to find songs we loved and I felt good singing. I have a deep voice and I like the feel of it. Then I would tell a story that the song reminded me of and eventually we just said: ‘Why don’t we make a show? A one-woman show?’ What sort of stories are you telling? Like when I was shooting Peggy Sue Got Married, I flew my grandparents in on the day I was filming a scene with Peggy Sue’s grandparents, including an actor called Leon Ames, who was 83.
His line was: ‘When’s it going to be? Friday or Saturday?’ and he was saying: ‘When’s it going to be? Thursday or Friday? Oh, give me another take…’ Eventually from behind the camera I hear: ‘Oh for heaven’s sake, Friday or Saturday!’ I went, ‘Grandmommy!’ And she said: ‘Well, I’m 85. If I can retain it, why can’t he?’ Your family’s quite conservative. Were they OK about you going into acting? My father was very much against it but he died the week before I turned 18. I was here in London at the American School because my father was at the embassy but we ended up in Springfield, Missouri, with my grandparents. The greatest culture shock of my life!
And you moved to New York the minute you could? The second I finished university. My car was packed and I drove to New York that night. I was supposed to share a flat with another woman but when I got there she and her boyfriend had reconciled and he’d moved in, so I spent my first night in my car. New York was very frightening back then but when you’re 21, you’re invincible. Was your big break Body Heat? That was my first film! But I never moved to LA. People understand it better now with all the revelations coming out but it was a very hostile environment towards women. The way they treated women, the disrespect, the sense that you were just a prop. Did you ever experience it? You know when it’s creepy. I got an email from my ex-husband when the whole Weinstein thing started. He said: ‘You told me 25 years ago he was a creep!’ I said: ‘I told you 30 years ago!’ But by the time I met Harvey I was well established and he tended to prey on younger, less secure women and that wasn’t me. How did you avoid being put in that ‘sexy’ pigeonhole after Body Heat? After Body Heat, you can imagine there were endless offers for Body Heat 2, 3, 4, whatever. And I said no. If I’ve explored one thing, I have no desire to do it again. I remembder an interview I did for Playboy. I showed up for

the cover shoot and they had all this lingerie and I said: ‘I don’t think so!’ I’d brought an outfit I liked, which was a long skirt. I was never going to do that crap. I wore what I wanted to wear. You do a lot of work for women’s groups, don’t you? I’m chair of the board of advocates for Planned Parenthood. We are clinics. We take care of women and their health. We were designed originally to help women plan their families. Are you a feminist? Absolutely! A lot of younger women are reluctant to call themselves feminists, aren’t they? Yeah, well, they didn’t march half their lives, did they? I always have been. That was how I was brought up. So, who are your friends when you’re in London? I became good friends with Maggie Smith when we were in theatres next to each other. I was going The graduate and she was doing The Lady In The Van and there were all these barriers and police and everything for me, and I’d come out, look over and see Maggie Smith just come out of her stage door and walk away. And one day I got a note from her saying, ‘May I borrow a barrier?’ So I carried the barrier over to her stage door and asked if she’d have dinner with me on Thursday, so Thursday nights we used to have dinner at The Ivy and used to stay so late we’d close the place.

Walk Right Back: hits from The Everly Brothers
From the Producers of That’ll be the Day and direct from the West End comes Walk Right Back, a brand-new musical production telling the story of the most successful duo of all time - The Everly Brothers. Featuring hits, such as Bye Bye Love, All I Have To Do Is Dream & Cathy’s Clown, this unique concert-based musical entwines the wonderful, sad - yet glorious story of The Everly Brothers. Follow the brothers’ rise from humble country beginnings to the biggest duo act the world had
ever seen, then their inevitable split and decade-long feud, to the magnificent reunion that gave them back to the world, and back to each other. With “harmonies from heaven” that influenced The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Simon & Garfunkel, The Everly Brothers were unmatched in their talent. Director Peter John Jackson explained: “The Everly Brothers were an original and unique act that had a sound like nothing else. Their harmonies were so tight that every group wanted to
emulate them. Before that, there was a singer, a band and backing vocals, The Everly’s entwined all of them and created ‘the harmony group’.” International Everly Brothers Fan Club favourites, Luke and Aaron Wilson, star as the iconic brothers. Producer Ollie Gray said: “Casting was a big challenge, as we felt it a must to have siblings playing Don and Phil, but after a long search we spotted two young brothers that were already honing their own tribute to the Everly Brothers. We were struck, not only by their vocal blend, but also their uncanny resemblance to Don and Phil Everly.” Walk Right Back is the first show of its kind to tell this phenomenal story of two brothers and their unforgettable music. Also featuring songs from a couple of the Everly Brothers’ good friends, Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison, Walk Right Back is surely a show not to be missed! Performance: Wednesday 9 May 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £23, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth.co.uk.

Legendary Australian based entertainer (he was actually born in the UK), the ever-popular Frank Ifield takes a nostalgic look back at his lengthy musical career, which spans more than five decades. Frank started as a country singer when he was only 13 years of age, and in the late ‘50s, after releasing over 40 records in Australia and appearing on countless TV and Radio shows, he returned to the UK to make his mark internationally. He was then the first artist to have three consecutive number one hits in the charts with I Remember You, Lovesick Blues and The Wayward Wind. And on his first major tour of the UK, he was supported by a young band from Liverpool...The Beatles! Frank will be performing with his special guest, Australian recording star Nicki Gillis, in a show that’s not to be missed! Performance: Thursday 10 May 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley. Tickets: £16.50, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth. co.uk

with its period. The current owner has blended the beautiful original features with a modern finish to create this wonderful family home. It is situated in a discreet position down a country lane leading to its long privately owned drive. As you approach the house you pass its delightful gardens and grounds on either side of the drive including the wellstocked orchard.
The accommodation of the main house is principally arranged over two floors, with exceptional living accommodation on the ground floor including the beautifully appointed dual aspect kitchen and the wonderful formal drawing room that looks out over the beautiful grounds. The first floor is equally expansive as the ground floor and is home to the superb
dual aspect master suite complete with dressing room and large bathroom. There are two further double bedrooms on this level one with shower en-suite and the large family bathroom with separate shower and bath. To the second floor there are two further bedrooms which have wonderful light via the twin dormers and Velux windows which look out to the nights sky. The detached annexe known as Blackfriars Cottage is of a similar age, we believe, to the main house and is also in superb decorative order. It boasts a beautiful sitting room, 3 double bedrooms, three bathrooms and a wonderful studio. The property lies approximately 2.4 miles to the West of the village of Rusper and approximately 5.3 miles to the north of Horsham. The surrounding area is a mixture of farmland and woodland with the benefit of easy access to Aroads and the motorway network, giving links to London and the south coast, with Gatwick a short journey away. John Mickel makes a welcome return to Superstox Superstox Motor Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter Between 1987 and 1992 Faygate racing driver John Mickel made quite a name for himself as a front runner in the Superstox series, which he left to concentrate on National Legends Racing – at which formula he has excelled with a hatrick of wins in the last three years. But, now John is returning to Superstox after a gap of nearly 30 years, giving in to years of temptation, saying: “I have always loved lively Superstox and
it remains strong in my heart so it’s very nice to make a return up against a lot of very talented young drivers. I hope they’ll be kind to me!” Mickel will be taking young blood with him – 16 year old Luke Simmons from Lingfield, who begins his journey into Superstox after cutting his teeth with two years in Junior Rods. Superstox began over 50 years ago in very fast purpose built single seater cars – Mickel will be using his legendary Number 4, which he drives at UK Legends meetings, sponsored in partnership with K-Seal. Full contact is allowed in
highly watchable Superstox – “to keep things interesting and to prevent any dawdling!” As with other oval track motor racing formulae, the fastest cars on the grid start at the back, so the bumpers are rarely out of action. But, it is not banger racing, so a high degree of dexterity is required by ambitious drivers to avoid big accidents, which nevertheless do occasionally occur. The first World Championship was held at Ipswich’s Foxall Heath Stadium in 1961. John Mickel and his team will be at the first meeting in Ipswich
this Saturday and, although they are not planning to attend every event, they intend to drive in a number of this year’s rounds. Superstox venues also include Eastbourne, Yarmouth, Aldershot, Lochgelly (Fife), Birmingham, Tullyroan in Northern Ireland and Mildenhall. Superstox meetings are family fun events - with fireworks and other attractions - at which a wide variety of vehicles appear in ancillary challenges, including Land Rovers, Reliant Robins, Saloons, Hot Rods, Bangers, Stock Cars and Caravans.

Horsham Juniors thrilled with Isle of Wight tour
Book early for this year’s Horsham 10K race and U16 fun run!
Running Martin Read - Sports Reporter This year’s Horsham 10K Road Race is on Sunday May 20, again starting and finishing at Horsham Rugby Club. Geoff Parker has taken over as Director of the race and he tells the District Post: “Entries are ahead of where they were at this time last year and we’re getting near to our 500 limit. The race is in the Sussex Grand Prix Series in which points are scored at each participating event, counting towards the championship trophy. However, this year the format has changed with fewer events included, so we’re delighted that we’ve retained our status. The reduced number of Grand Prix components has, though, created extra competition for places in our race.” The beauty of the course - multi-terrain with two laps, mainly on quiet open roads, including country lanes and a woodland bridleway stretch also adds further interest. There is also a separate traffic free fun run of about 1200 metres, with a 10.15 start, around the rugby pitch for under 16 year olds, Geoff Parker adding: “The U16 fun run is also filling up fast, so enter early to avoid disappointment – it is most unlikely that there will be any
places in either race available on the day.” The main race sets off at 11am and prizes are awarded to winners in the various categories. Every runner in both events will be chip timed and given a memento marking their achievement. The runs are organised by Horsham Joggers and marshalled by around 80 friendly volunteers, with profits donated to local charities. In 2017 Horsham’s Max Dumbrell led home a strong field in the 10km race, completing in 32 minutes 57 seconds. Natalie McCreath from Eastbourne was the fastest lady in 42.19, but the race is open to and enjoyed by runners of all abilities. Online entries can be made by following the link on www. horshamjoggers.co.uk / horsham-10K/ Geoff Parker summed up by paying tribute to his predecessor Paul Aylett, saying: “Paul was race Director for 5 years and I take this opportunity to thank him for his hard work and for leaving the organisation in great shape. Come and join us for a great family experience, we’ve got additional attractions for children, excellent refreshments – including our legendary cake stall. The races are always well supported and we’re looking forward to another great day at Horsham Rugby Club!”
Mini Soccer Tournament huge success

Mini Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Rugby Club is ending their season on a high – the 1st XV has just won the Sussex Cup again, the U18s are through to the Semi Final of the National Cup and there is very keen interest and involvement at even more junior level – as witnessed by the enthusiastic participation of U9 and U11 squads and their supporters on the recently completed tour to the Isle of Wight. The Wildcats – the U9s – and the Topcats, the U11s, thoroughly enjoyed their highly successful trip to the Vectis Rugby Festival at Seaclose Park, Newport. Both teams relished their new livery of shirts from Thakeham Homes and hoodies from Horsham’s Coot public house, the unbeaten Wildcats celebrating with eight
wins and a draw, while the Topcats were equally impressive with six wins, a draw and just one loss. Four energetic Horsham teams participated at the event supported by Newport’s long standing Earl Mountbatten Hospice with funds generated for food and refreshment sales raised for the host club. A huge party travelled from Horsham – 54 players, 30 siblings, 71 adults accompanied by a healthy contingent of dogs, necessitating outstanding organisation to co-ordinate the movements of the entire party. And, there was more to it than just rugby – the children also revelled in watersport and team bonding activities, including raft building, water confidence training, sailing and kayaking all day on Saturday, followed by a glorious day of free scor-
ing - and fierce tackling rugby on the Sunday. This was the happy culmination of a very successful season, establishing two fine junior rugby teams and, particularly importantly, forming strong bonds among players and parents alike. On return the family fun day at the Rugby Club was also greatly enjoyed, Chris Dodd saying: “Huge credit goes to all of the team coaches, managers and, especially, to the Tour Co-ordinator Tonya Fitzpatrick. Training re-starts in August ahead of the new season beginning in September – if any parent thinks that their child might like to get involved then visit the club website and send an e mail to Horsham Rugby Club’s Mini and Junior Chairman Jonathan Pratt at www.horshamrufc.com/contact/. Meanwhile, here’s to many successful seasons (and tours) to come!”
Horsham District Mini Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter 66 teams competed in the Horsham District Youth League mixed mini soccer tournament – 31 teams in the Under 9s age group and 35 in the Under 10s, with, as in the Champions League, a group stage and the winners and runners up progressing into a knock out cup and the third and fourth placed teams going into the plate competition. Each match involved two games, ensuring that the whole squad had the opportunity to feature in competitive matches. The Finals were held at Ashington Cougars FC and after East Grinstead had won the U9 Cup, Broadbridge Heath Bears played Horsham Tigers in the closely contested Plate. There was little to choose between the two sides until Heath scored the winning goal in the last five minutes, clinching a 4-3 win.
In the U10 category Faygate United Youth posted a strong challenge, but were eventually overcome by Hassocks Hawks, who won the cup, reprising their performance as U9s last year, when they also lifted the silverware. In the plate trophy Southwater won the first game 2-0, but Billingshurst scored first in the second. However, Southwater were determined not to be beaten and after scoring the next goal they went on to win 4-1 overall. Horsham District Youth Football League Mini Soccer Co-ordinator Marc Oratis enthused: “Despite the weather causing postponements in the early rounds we managed to complete the finals and again it was a fantastic advert for youth football and the standard was excellent. All participants played in the right spirit and can hold their heads up high – well done to all of the boys and girls who took part.”

John Mickel in pole position after Round 2
National Legends Motor Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter Faygate racing driver John Mickel has set off in fast pursuit of his fourth consecutive UK National Legends Championship title in his trade mark dashing orange-coloured 1934 Ford replica Bonnie & Clyde style car (Number 4) sponsored by K-Seal. At the end of March in the first weekend of racing at Cheshire’s Oulton Park, snow, gloomy skies and a slippery cold and wet track impeded racing throughout the first day, with drivers forced to wipe snow from their visors in the low visibility. Demonstrating his legendary race craft all through the day, Mickel hit the front of the pack in every race, but the wet conditions favoured other
drivers’ set ups. Despite a red flag stoppage following a roll on the first corner in Race 1, John still managed to clinch 2nd spot. He drove hard to finish 5th in Race 2, which included two yellow flag stoppages. And, despite starting from 22nd position on the grid, he surged through to finish 6th in the Final with just 1.8 seconds separating the top nine drivers at the finish. The tightly competitive Oulton results placed John 4th in the Championship at the end of Round 1 – a good, solid start with 8 weekends, 16 races and 48 races to come – with 200 points on offer for each race. For Round 2 the action moved to North Yorkshire’s Croft track, where, in sparkling conditions, after the opening heat on Saturday morning Mickel was unde-
feated for the remainder of the race meeting with two wins on day one and a clean sweep on the Sunday. Mickel laid down a marker in the qualifier with the fastest time only to be edged out by Steve Whitelegg in the first race. But, in Heat 2 Mickel was at his dominant best and from a lead of 2.7 seconds on the opening lap he opened an advantage of over six seconds by mid race, before cruising to the chequered flag eight seconds clear of the chasers. Saturday’s final was, however, a much closer contest - although Mickel again came out on top to chalk up his second win of the day. On the Sunday at Croft the temperature had dropped with dark clouds bringing rain ahead of qualifying, but, following a hard fought four-way scrap for the lead, Mickel got to the front, holding on until the flag on lap 8. In Heat 2 he surged through in lap four, and was pushed all the way but went on to win by just 0.2 seconds. In Sunday’s Final it was a shootout between Mickel and Whitelegg, John taking the lead on lap seven to win by 0.5 seconds, saying: “The team were kicking ourselves after the first race on Saturday because we felt we should have had that, too. The car seems to be really hooked up around Croft, I like the track and we were getting quicker all weekend, we had the legs. We didn’t have much luck at Oulton, so it was nice to have a good weekend at Croft.” After Croft John Mickel leads the Championship with 2,590 points – 205 ahead of Whitelegg. The next Championship event takes place at the Anglesey Circuit at the end of May.

Horsham District Cycle Forum secures improvements Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham District Cycle Forum (HDCF) comprises a group of people who live or work in the Horsham area with the objective of making cycling a safe, convenient and attractive transport option for those of all ages and abilities. A major interest of the group is to press for separate, safe cycling facilities to be installed in new housing developments to ensure that residents can make pleasant journeys by bicycle, enjoying our outstanding countryside. Peter Silburn, Secretary of HDCF, is pleased to report some good news for cyclists – a section of the bridleway to the east of the Kilnwood Vale site, which is currently unusable, is to be resurfaced, allowing safe passage to Horsham Crawley and beyond. This is something that the residents have been seeking in the absence of cycle routes within the site. Peter Silburn explains: “The bridleway along the site’s eastern edge is to be improved with an all-weather surface, enabling all year round cycle access to and from Horsham and Crawley and further afield. Currently a section of the path is so impassable that barriers have been installed to deter people from using it. There has therefore been no viable cycle access to Horsham and Crawley other than by using the high speed dual carriageway, which, unsurprisingly few, if any people, were willing to do. When the improvement works
have been completed there will be a connection to National Cycle Route 228 along Kilnwood Lane to Horsham and Crawley and it will no longer be necessary to wait for the proposed cycle routes within the Kilnwood Vale development to be completed (which could take anything up to ten years – just to cycle to the nearest town).” As the initial houses at Kilnwood Vale began to be occupied residents were unhappy about the lack of cycle provision and approached HDCF to see if anything could be done, so HDCF contacted West Sussex County Council, Peter Silburn saying: “We are indebted to Sue du Chemin of the West Sussex Public Rights of Way team for making the necessary improvements happen.” The resurfacing is scheduled for this summer and covers the section of bridleway from the Bewbush exit up to the playground. The new cycle path will be similar to that used on the Worth Way – up to 2m in width with a large stone base for drainage and a finer top layer. The vegetation will be cut right back to the ditch and the barriers removed, permitting permanent usage throughout the year. HDCF recommends www.cyclestreets.net as a journey planning tool. And, the group welcomes new members – HDCF next meetings will be on the first Tuesdays of June, August and October (AGM) at 7.30 in the Bodium Room, County Hall North, WSCC, Parkside, Horsham info@hdcf.org.uk – 01403 258830 – twitter@CycleForumHorsh
Local Sussex Cup Matches postponed
Saturday April 28 - Gray-Nicholls Sussex T20 Cup Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Despite the determined efforts of the ground staff at Horsham’s Cricketfield Road, local matches in Round 1 of the Gray-Nicholls
Sussex Cup were postponed last Saturday after heavy overnight rain had left the bowlers’ run ups and parts of the outfield unplayable - although the wicket itself was hard and dry under the covers. Horsham had been due to play Haywards Heath at 1pm followed
by Billingshurst v Roffey after Horsham kindly agreed to host the match because conditions at Billingshurst’s Jubilee Fields had not recovered sufficiently from the deluges earlier in April. Horsham’s game has been rearranged for this Sunday – at home. A replacement date for the Billingshurst v Roffey fixture is awaited. Meanwhile, this Saturday sees the opening matches in this season’s Sussex Premier League – Horsham will travel to reigning champions East Grinstead, while last year’s runners up Roffey go to Middleton. Both matches start at 12 noon and will be contested on a 50 over per side basis. Horsham’s first home match will be on the following Saturday, May 12th, when they entertain their old sparring partners Preston Nomads. Due to a most unfortunate clash in the fixture schedule, Roffey’s first game at their Crawley Road ground will be on the same day – against East Grinstead. Full match reports on Horsham and Roffey’s 1st XI league and cup matches will be published in your District Post week by week throughout the season.
BBH’s season ends in defeat Saturday April 28 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division AFC Uckfield 4 0 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath finished the season on a low note, being undone by three goals in quick succession mid way through the first half as they recorded their second consecutive defeat and their eighth loss from their last 10 outings. But, Heath dominated possession for the first 20 minutes, forcing the Uckfield defence and keeper Jake Roberts to make a series of important clearances. Uckfield, though, withstood the challenge – Roberts thwarted a Gicu Iordache shot with his leg, resulting in an unfulfilled Heath corner before the keeper kept out a highly promising shot from George Cousins. Heath looked likely to score, until, in the 21st minute, an Uckfield free kick
penetrated the Heath defence for Trevor McCreadie to head into the top right corner of the goal. Almost immediately, McCreadie found the net again at close quarters when he latched onto a Bailo Camara cross. And, it promptly got worse when an Uckfield corner gave Matt McClean the opportunity to benefit from a deflection. Rampant Uckfield had two further chances but Conor Evento in the Heath goal safely gathered a McCreadie strike before McLean’s shot was again deflected, but this time over the bar. Turning round with a three nil deficit was too much for unthreatening Heath as Uckfield took control, Camara posing regular problems. Yet, Uckfield were kept at bay until five minutes from the end when McCreadie eschewed a hat trick, passing the ball to Regan Smith who had come off the bench to tap in from close range. Heath finished in 15th spot and can now take a rest while they look forward to playing at their new ground after next season gets underway.

Horsham’s fighting comeback mired in controversy
Photos by John Lines Saturday April 28 – Bostik Football League South Division Horsham 2 5 Whyteleafe Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The Hornets’ final game of their inconsistent season ended in disappointment with their fourth straight defeat after they had clawed back a 0-3 deficit with two second half goals in a strong comeback display - only for Whyteleafe to score twice more in controversial circumstances, to finish with a comfortable win. Horsham’s habit of conceding

an early goal returned to haunt them when Scott Day’s shot put the visitors ahead in the third minute. Horsham mounted a retaliatory attack, but it fizzled out before Nkori-Venceslas Bola scythed through the home defence but was off target. Then, Dean Bown fed Hakeem Adelakun to no avail and when action switched to the other end, Bola again had radar problems. Horsham earned a corner, Landais’ strike being pushed away and Bown caused further anxiety for the visiting defenders, but Whyteleafe scored again when Day converted Bola’s cross. And, it soon got worse when Bola
headed home from close range. A Horsham corner might have produced a goal, but Joe Shelley headed the ball just wide leaving Whyteleafe three goals to the good at the break. Horsham came back out in determined vein with first Alfie Rogers testing Merson in the Whyeleafe goal before the keeper had to negate a Bown foray. Horsham, though, did not have to wait long for a goal, Darren Boswell unleashing a strong shot to put the Hornets on the score sheet. Ten minutes later, after Curtis Gaylor had fired wide, Boswell got past Merson again to put Horsham in serious contention of at least sharing the points. But, a contentious penalty was awarded when Horsham players, officials and supporters were convinced that ex Horsham player Ikechi Eze had not been fouled. Josh Pelling almost kept out Sam Clayton’s spot kick, but it found the net to double Whyteleafe’s lead. Pelling was subsequently successful in preventing Day’s hat trick, until Whyteleafe intercepted a Horsham pass after its path had been blocked by the referee, enabling Bola to get the ball home with less than ten minutes of full time remaining, the visitors clinching a 5-2 victory despite Horsham’s impressive second half display. Carshalton Athletic won the league with 102 points, three ahead of Lewes, while Shoreham picked up the wooden spoon with 8 points, 15 behind Molesey. Horsham’s long season of 46 league matches, often involving substantial Saturday and mid week travel, plus cup games, ended with them in 15th position, one higher than last season. Their lengthy ground share arrangements, latterly at Lancing, are scheduled to come to an end during next season when they finally take possession of their new Hop Oast ground. Meanwhile, Horsham will be holding an open trial day on May 19th for players aged between 17-23. Applicants are requested to submit their football CV and contact details to bryanotoole@live.com to receive details of venues and timings.
YMCA end their league season on a winning note Tuesday May 1 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Crawley Down Gatwick 0 2 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA won their final league game of the season – at The Haven Centre - to finish fourth in the table. The game had an end of term feel about it, not through lack of effort on either side, but both teams were out of form. Crawley Down Gatwick - the Anvils - had only won one game in April and the YMCA fixture was CDG’s sixth game in 12 days. However, YM had an early reprieve when Oli Leslie broke through for CDG but fluffed the opportunity in front of goal. YM soon played themselves into the game, creating possibilities – and probabilities – and earning two corners, but these went unfulfilled until Tony Garrod burst through in the 33rd minute and, with CDG keeper Lorcan Healy out of position, the ball was drilled into the empty net. CDG also had a corner and several chances, but they looked unthreatening in front of goal. Phil Johnson, Dave Brown and others regularly penetrated the CDG defence only for recent finishing problems to re-surface, leaving YM with a 1-0 advantage at the break, lack of confidence seemingly
deterring first time shots at goal. The second half began with Michael Belli squandering a golden opportunity for CDG, but YM also had chances but either they were off target or Healy kept them at bay. Five YM corners came and went, but with ten minutes left on the clock, Garrod, with his back to the goal, trapped a through ball, turned and nonchalantly fired it home from close quarters. Both sides made substitutions, but the pattern of the game remained the same despite concerted activity, CDG were passing well, but were unable to seriously trouble Aaron Jeal in the YM goal. After the game ended 2-0 in YM’s favour, Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “We were by far the better side, their defence kept letting us through – we could have won 6-0!” After a poor start to the season, YM had a purple patch with a sustained clean sheet winning streak escalating them up the table and into top spot, points clear of their rivals but, unaccountably they faded at the business end of the campaign. But, they do still have the opportunity to win silverware for the first time in four years when they meet league winners Haywards Heath in the final of the Peter Bentley Cup at Hassocks on Monday (11am kick off).
Extra time goal torpedoes Horsham YMCA Saturday April 28 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 1 2 Newhaven Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Despite some 70 matches at Gorings Mead this season, another excellent pitch was provided – a testament to many hours of dedicated work by Ron Moulding, Peter Potter and Alan Maguire. But, in their last home game of the season, a Newhaven goal in
the 92nd minute cruelly denied YMCA a deserved point after they had dominated for much of the game, especially in the second half. Sadly, though, unfulfilled chances again proved costly. YM took the lead straight from the off when Callum Donaghey rose to head in a corner. Then, Phil Johnson was just unable to connect with Luke Gedling’s pass before a second YM corner was scrambled away. However, Newhaven were lively, particularly the Robinson brothers and former YM striker James Rhodes, and YM keeper Aaron Jeal was
forced to save an attack with his feet before rushing out to collect a threatening through ball. Dean Carden, Sam Schaaf, Dave Brown and Johnson all worried Newhaven as YM earned four more corners, but it was a Newhaven set piece that enabled Freddie Beale to controversially equalise right on the stroke of half time, home protests going unheeded. Newhaven resumed in fighting mode with a corner and frantic action drawing an excellent save from Jeal, ahead of YM contentiously being reduced to 10 men when Guy Harding was sent off
for denying a goal scoring opportunity – putting his appearance in the forthcoming Peter Bentley Cup Final in jeopardy. YM upped their pace to compensate for their numerical disadvantage, Dan Evans, Gedling, Brown and Donaghey all testing the Newhaven defence in open play and from three corners. YM were finishing strongly and were unlucky to see play stopped because of an injury to the Newhaven keeper when they were through with the ball at close range. With YM pressing for all three points, Schaaf was fouled and Gedling’s
free kick was cleared up field culminating in a Newhaven corner, which was parried out to the left, from where Seb Saunders fired in the winning goal. YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “That epitomised our recent luck – on another day both of their goals might have been disallowed, but in doesn’t make any difference to our league campaign now.” Sam Schaaf said: “That was very frustrating!” All agreed, other players adding that unconverted opportunities were decisive.

Horsham win the Bob Rogers Cup five in a row!
Saturday April 28 – Bob Rogers Cup Final at Hastings Horsham 37 35 Hove
Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Hats off to Horsham – winners of the Bob Rogers Cup – the Sussex Senior Cup – for the fifth consecutive year, a truly outstanding achievement! This is the fourth time that
they have played Hove in the final during that period. Last year they beat the seasiders 57-3 but Hove have just been promoted from Horsham’s league into London SE1 and the two sides have had
Horsham Colts win the Sussex Cup and League Sunday April 29 – Sussex Colts Cup Final at Heathfield RFC Horsham 19 8 Hove
Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter On the previous day Horsham’s 1st XV had beaten Hove in the seniors Sussex Cup Final and, having already won their Sussex league and got through to the Semi Final of the National Cup, Horsham Colts were determined to show that they could also beat the seasiders to win some silverware. At Heathfield, Hove Colts were in command for the first 25
minutes, putting their Horsham counterparts under sustained pressure, but to Horsham’s credit, Hove only managed to produce a single unconverted try before Horsham asserted themselves, kicking a penalty to trail by just two points at the break. Following a pep talk, Horsham dominated the second half, but their only reward was an unfulfilled try by Eddie Grogan to give them an 8-5 lead – until Marcus Condon kicked a penalty, but when Hove had similar success Horsham led by just 3 points. Horsham, though, had the league and cup double in their sights, inspiring the try of the match when Alfie Burchfield’s supply
enabled Josh Earle to crash over. With Hove looking unthreatening a penalty was conceded, converted by Condon for Horsham to win 19-8. Horsham were rightly proud, Head Coach Tony Lewis saying: “We were certainly not at our best, particularly in the first half. But, if a team can play well below 100% and still win then there is a lot to be pleased about. The boys battled extremely hard with telling contributions from Tyrick Gonzague and Ian Paku, but we shall need to raise our game on Sunday in the National Cup Semi Final at Maidenhead - and the boys are certainly capable of doing so!”
two very close games in the league earlier this season – Horsham winning 25-20 at home before being shaded 43-38 at Hove. So, a tight game was guaranteed, which proved to be the case despite Horsham leading by 34-15 after 50 minutes, following which Hove fought back vigorously to edge ahead, the game going down to the wire with a tense nervejangling finish. At Hastings Hove made the early running and scored an unconverted try to take the lead, but Horsham responded immediately, Vince Everitt bursting through to get over the line, Joe Wilde converting to give Horsham a narrow advantage. Hove then went ahead again from a penalty before Horsham also scored from a place kick and Jonny Goward crashed over, Wilde again converting. After Hove had maximised Patton’s try Horsham led 17-15 at the break. Horsham hit Hove hard on the resumption with 17 points - from Everitt’s second try, followed by one from Wilde after he had caught a Mike Watts chip, Wilde converting twice and then successfully kicking a penalty to put Horsham 34-15 to the good. Hove refused to contemplate defeat, Patton getting over again, mercifully unconverted. With Jonny
Whiting off injured, Hove’s Rob Biggs made up for his missed kick with Hove’s fourth try. Martin Macdonald added another, this time Davies kicking the extras. Hove then snatched the narrowest of leads – 35-34 - when Ryan Morlen secured a drop goal in a blistering comeback. Horsham though still had the energy to stage a final foray and when a Hove infringement provided a penalty it was gleefully accepted by Wilde who was again on target to wrench the cup out of Hove’s grasp. Relieved and elated Horsham Head Coach, Nick Stocker said: “Another close encounter with Hove, both teams playing a fast running brand of rugby. Quality tries in abundance, testament to the standard of rugby in London SE2, and a great game to end the season. While the whole squad contributed, particular mention should be made of Vince Everitt who had a storming game stepping up from the colts.” Nineteen years ago Horsham were on the relegation slide ending up as a seemingly permanent fixture in the Sussex league, but now after finishing fourth in London SE2 and with the junior teams all doing well, the future bodes well at the town’s Rugby club.
