Celebrate what it is to be English this weekend The Horsham English Festival promises to offer a fantastic blend of traditional cultural icons celebrating our English heritage across two days of dance, music, and vehicles, supported by themed stalls and entertainments on Saturday and Sunday 12 & 13 May. Kicking it all off on Saturday will be the incredible 26th annual Broadwood Morris Day of Dance; a riot of colour, music and dance featuring around 25 dance sides mostly from the local area. Commencing with a procession at 10.30am, the dancers will then disperse throughout the town to perform a variety of dance traditions, just listen out for the Drummers! At 3.00pm, the day transforms into an ‘anyone can join in’, open air Barn Dance at the Bandstand. Everyone is invited to come along and join in the fun. A new feature this year is being provided by Crates Local Produce, who will have their iconic

London black cab outside their shop. In return for a donation to the Samaritans, visitors will be able to sit in the driver’s seat and imagine themselves touring London. Crates will also be offering tasting from their wide range of gin; Again, donations to Samaritans will be very welcome. PJ Aldred of Crates, said: “We love the English Festival, and we’re delighted to be taking an active part this year”. The Carfax market traders have been invited to theme their stalls in keeping with the event, and a group of Classic Morris Cars have been invited to display once again on the Forum near Sainsbury’s and TK Maxx/Dunelm. On 17 May 2018, global Outdoor Classroom Day returns, with over 1 million children in the UK and Republic of Ireland (ROI) expected to participate in outdoor lessons and play. Following a record 582,000 children in the UK and ROI ditching their desks for the outdoors last year on Outdoor Classroom Day, schools are being challenged to make the event even bigger this year. The initiative, led by national education charity, Learning through Landscapes (LTL), in the UK and ROI and globally by Project Dirt, advocates for 90 minutes of playtime every day in every school around the world and aims to raise awareness of the outdoors as key to improving the health and wellbeing of children. Learning outdoors is proven to increase child activity, enhance problem solving, aid concentration and develop social and team-working skills. It’s also a chance for children to have fun! On the Day, in addition to championing play, teachers will lead a wide variety of lessons including

outdoor Maths, English and Science, gardening and eco projects, bioblitzing, den-building, Art and Drama, tree climbing and much more. Last year, children in as many as 70 countries including Brazil, USA, Australia, Tanzania, China, South Africa, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, Thailand - all joined forces to celebrate the Day. This year, for the first time, they’ll be joined by children in Turkey. Carley Sefton, CEO of Learning through Landscapes explained: “Increasing the time children spend outdoors learning and playing is a free and practical way to address a time-bomb of childhood health and wellbeing issues. What’s more, it helps to enhance engagement in learning across the curriculum and enables children to develop positive relationships with the natural environment. “Outdoor Classroom Day is a call for teachers, schools, and parents, to join us in celebrating the benefits of daily outdoor learning and play.”

At the heart of the day, on the Carfax Bandstand, Horsham Folk Club and friends will be presenting a concert with an outstanding selection of performers. The concert will take place on the Carfax Bandstand between 11am and 4pm. for a mini-festival of medieval mayhem - Look out for their knights around Carfax during the day! Locally produced food and drink will also follow a traditional theme, led by a Hog Roast and Hot Roast Beef, from Pig in a Jacket and Garlic Wood Farm respectively, Loxwood Mead, and Hepworth’s Real Ales. Ice creams will be available from local shops Candy Box and Paninos, and face painting will be provided by Busydays. All car displays will leave in a mass parade through Carfax at 3.30pm.

Working in association with Petworth Festival, celebrating their 40th season this summer, Kevis House Gallery presents an exhibition by artist Ruth Dent. Petworth Festival will also be commemorating the conclusion of the First World War, tying in with Dent’s series of 8 prints inspired by Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem. In 2011, Dent accompanied the Rochester Cathedral Choir to Aachen, Germany, where they had been invited to sing with the Aachen Symphony Orchestra and several other choirs, Britten’s War Requiem. During the full dress rehearsal, Dent had the opportunity to sit, listen and draw in a small sketchbook. Britten used Wilfrid Owen’s words to preface his piece: “My subject is War, and the pity of War, The Poetry is in the pity … All a poet can do today is warn .”

From her sketches, Dent has produced a series of 8 prints, one for each movement, with Dies Irae being split into three, as it is the largest part of Britten’s composition. Dent, like Britten, has incorporated Owen’s words into her print series. The prints measure 33cm x 50cm, and are printed in an edition of 10 on handmade paper from Moulin de Larroque, Couzes, France. Each is individual, due to the nature of the paper and the printing process. This is important to Dent, as the handmade paper represents human skill and individuality, “as every soldier was an individual.” Speaking about her work, Ruth Dent, said: “I have endeavoured to capture the spirit of the music and words, as this monumental piece moves along its journey, always bearing in mind the cost to humanity.” The exhibition will open 17 July and run until 4 August 2018.

Local Co-Op fined after Health and Safety breach

Southern Co-Operative Ltd has been fined £500,000 for breaching health and safety law, after a young woman suffered horrific fractures to her leg. The charges were brought by Horsham District Council, following an investigation into the accident at the Co-Operative store in Guildford Road, Horsham. In a hearing at Brighton Crown Court, District Judge Szagun accepted the guilty plea to a Health and Safety at Work offence that resulted in a serious broken leg to a young female employee, and a fine of £500,000 plus costs for the Co-Operative .The fine was reduced by one third, to £333,334, to reflect

the appropriate credit for the guilty plea and mitigating factors. In February 2016, the young staff member attempted to manoeuvre a defective roll cage, which toppled over, falling onto her legs, causing severe multiple fractures. The roll cage trolley was loaded with milk cartoons, and the weight of the load caused painful and traumatic injury. It was an unnecessary incident, and a disturbing experience to witness for the colleagues who came to her aid until the ambulance attended. The investigation that followed, by Horsham District Council’s Environmental Health team, found the incident was entirely prevent-

able. The roll cage had been identified as broken two days before the accident. The procedures that would have stopped the incident were in place, but were not known or not followed, and the staff had conflicting views on their Health and Safety responsibilities. One concerning feature was the store’s breakdown in its Health and Safety management, their absence of knowledge, and the validity of the necessary training. The Co-Op acknowledged that the abuse of their e-learning system was a troubling feature of the investigation, but were keen to emphasise that they did not condone such a practice.

The District Judge commented that the Co-Op “should have been pro-active in addressing or redressing the issue before they did” and recognised the Co-Op as a large organisation with mitigating factors. Councillor Tricia Youtan, Cabinet Member for Community & Wellbeing, said: “This was a long and challenging case for Horsham District Council’s Environmental Health team. “Retail supermarkets play an important part in being at the forefront of safety on the high street. They are often the employers of young impressionable adults, new to the working environment, and, as employers, they have a legal and moral obligation to do things correctly. “This incident had a severe impact on the victim, and she will have to live with the injuries she sustained for the rest of her life.” “Horsham District Council supports both small and large businesses in their health and safety obligations, and often plays an important advisory role in helping them, but it is important to remember this was a totally avoidable incident, and it acts as a stark reminder of what can happen when safety measures fail. “Hopefully the incident will result in a renewed focus by the Co-Op to ensure standards are maintained in the future.”

Her Majesty Writes to Towers Pupils Year 3&4 Towers pupils were delighted to receive a letter from Her Majesty the Queen, after they wrote to her whilst working on their topic of recycling waste. The pupils developed two different skills by writing to Her Majesty; their literacy skills were enhanced by the task of writing real letters to real people, and their knowledge of “green” issues was greatly increased.

Fundraising Target Sky Rockets

Senior pupils from Christ’s Hospital have raised an incredible amount for charities YoungMinds and Chestnut Tree House, almost doubling their original target of £2,500 to £4,273 and still counting, by walking 44 miles from the City of London to their School campus in Horsham on 15 April. The sixth formers met at 6.30am by Christ’s Hospital’s recently installed sculpture (close to

the site of School’s original home in the City 1552-1902) and it took just over 12 hours to reach their School in Horsham, where they celebrated this epic achievement with parents, staff and other pupils. One of the project leaders, Verity Butt, 17, said: “Firstly, a huge thanks to everyone who supported our journey from the City of London to Horsham. Secondly,

we would like to express our gratitude to all those who provided delicious cakes and those who purchased other baked goods at various fundraising events. We are now in the midst of exam season and as it stands, the grand total is at £4,273. “The walk itself was understandably challenging, but exciting and amusing. It was satisfying knowing all our hard work was going to a good cause, and nice to see both teachers and pupils working in unison outside of a classroom setting. This reflects the good nature of the School, and speaks for itself. “I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and would never have believed our targets would sky rocket. Epsom trip for those in the race for Oxbridge!

Photos by Ian McAlister An excited coach of 2019 Oxbridge hopefuls made their way from Collyer’s to Epsom Downs Race Course for the annual Oxbridge Conference. Students from the Ofsted Outstanding sixth form college had the opportunity to visit rolling lectures focussing on successful applications, student finance and careers, as well as informative presentations on the nature of Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Students also enjoyed talks and Q&A sessions on individual subjects and disciplines. Ian McAlister, Collyer’s Director of HE and Progression, organised the trip. He said: “We have some very able students and the fabulous courses on offer at Oxford and Cambridge are not only attractive, but a very real option for many of them.” Collyer’s Martin Nichols is helping to guide the prospective Oxbridge students. He said: “What the universities are looking for are students who will enjoy the process of learning. They want

engaged, intelligent individuals who will be happy in their studies. This is fortunate because that describes our students well! “It is comforting to hear that as Oxbridge moves towards more complex admissions tests, our students now have the opportunity to show their true ability and understanding. The Conference was both eye opening and practical, with clear balanced advice delivered in an informative and articulate manner.” The students who took part in the Oxbridge event at Epsom Downs were hugely positive about the day. Gracie Enticknap said: “This has been so helpful I have had so many of my questions, from finance to subject based information. It has given me an excellent set of parameters to work to. I am so glad I came.” Sophia Linssen-Pitsaros said: “I have found the science and natural science lectures really helpful today.”

Maisie Burgess added: “Somehow, seeing all the other students enabled me to understand the competition. It seems more real to me now.” Issy Hall also enjoyed the trip: “This has been a very positive day for us. The lectures have been very entertaining and really engaging, this makes me excited for what is ahead!” Ian McAlister was delighted: “‘There was so much on offer this year. The day comprised detailed information on the application process and student finance, and in addition to course talks, our learners also had a chance to talk to students currently studying at Oxbridge.” Collyer’s deputy principal, Steve Martell, said: “At Collyer’s we encourage all of our students to aspire to the very best they can be. We run several Oxbridge events, part of a busy progression programme which continues throughout their time at Collyer’s.”

A lasting legacy: Major appeal launched as part of RAF100 A major fundraising appeal has been launched by the Royal Air Force, and its four main charities, as part of the Royal Air Force’s centenary. 2018 marks the centenary of the Royal Air Force, and to celebrate there are a number of events taking place across the country, and abroad. Events include a touring display of aircraft from the past century in cities nationwide to a mass flypast in London, 100-day baton relay and the unveiling of new galleries at the RAF Museum.

The RAF100 Appeal brings together the Royal Air Force, the RAF Association, the RAF Benevolent Fund, the RAF Charitable Trust, and the RAF Museum to establish a legacy that matches the vision of Viscount Trenchard who steered the formation of the RAF in 1918. The Appeal encourages the British public to get involved in the celebrations and help repay ‘the debt we owe’ and help to raise funds for the past, present and future RAF Family, inspiring, honouring and supporting all who have given so much. Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, said: “For a century, the brave men and women of the RAF have served their country

selflessly. The RAF’s centenary is a proud moment for the service and allows us, as a nation, time to pause and reflect and to celebrate these wonderful achievements. A Life & Death Consultation Campaigners are urging West Sussex residents to tell the County Council that they want a significant improvement in fire and rescue service cover. The Council is currently consulting the public on the service’s Integrated Risk Management Plan (IRMP). Retired firefighter, Tony Morris, said: “Drastic cuts to our fire & rescue service have put residents and firefighters at greater risk, and this consultation hides even more cuts.” Speaking about the IRMP recently, County Councillor, Daniel Purchese, warned: “there is potential for some serious cuts that the public might easily miss”. The Council has cut frontline fire engines from 46 to 35, but it has emerged that, on occasions, only ten of those fire engines are available. “The County Council should be ashamed of providing such incredibly poor protection to the public,” Mr Morris added. The West Sussex Fire & Rescue Stop the Cuts group is advising people, who don’t want to see more deaths and

property damage, to tell the Council that the priorities must be: No more fire engine of firefighter cuts. Fire engines to be normally crewed by five firefighters, with an absolute minimum of four. At least 30 fire engines to be available around the clock. No reduction in response standards. Fire alarm calls to be attended and treated as potential fires. Tony Morris said: “This is a life and death consultation. When people are in trouble, they need properly crewed fire engines to arrive quickly. Sadly, that is no longer guaranteed every time. Elsewhere, similar IRMPs have resulted in additional loss of life and property damage. “It is time for the County Council to stop making excuses, and give the fire & rescue service the resources they need to properly protect the public”. The consultation closes on 28 May 2018 and can be found on the Council’s website.

Young volunteers from the St John Ambulance Horsham Cadet Unit, and the Portslade and Shoreham Badger Unit, have won the charity’s regional First Aid Challenge - a competition held annually for its volunteers. The event, on Saturday 14 April in Guildford, saw Badgers (aged seven to 10) and Cadets (aged 10 to 17) from across the London and the South region compete for the top spot. Portslade and Shoreham Badgers Jessica Redgrave, 9, and Ella Munday, 9, won their age group after having their life saving skills tested by various activities. This included placing action cards with a sequence of treatments placed

in the correct order, as well as explaining, whilst blindfolded, how to place someone in the recovery position to two other Badgers. The Horsham Cadets took two trophies – the highest scoring pair, and the overall winning Cadet team. The ‘pairs’ winners were James Brew, 16, and Alice Chen, 17, with James and Alice competing alongside their teammates, Jasmine Dilloway, 16, and Daisy Bedall, 16, to take the Cadet team title. In the pairs test, James and Alice had to treat two patients – one with abdominal pains, and the other who was feeling faint and then needed CPR. In the team test, the four Cadets – James,

Alice, Jasmine, and Daisy - were asked to treat a sports competitor who’d injured their foot with a javelin, and someone who’d slammed the car door on their hand. Jo Gardner-Smith, regional youth manager, said: “We are extremely proud of all the young people who took part in the competition. It shows how hard they have worked to learn and master first aid skills, which can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.” The St John Ambulance First Aid Challenge is designed to help youth volunteers maintain their essential first aid skills, so they are confident and ready in case of an emergency. The St John Ambulance unit in Portslade and Shoreham is looking for more youngsters to become the next generation of life savers by becoming a Badger. The IT Academy at Crawley College has purchased 8 Makeblock 10-in-1 Robot Kits to support their students’ understanding of mechanical design, electronics and programming. Having built the kits, the IT students are now busy programming the robots to perform a variety of functions, including use as camera dolly robots, which are being developed with help from Creative Media students. Crawley College is committed to promoting practical projects that utilise IT skills, to prepare

students for the workplaces of the future. The project is designed to support creative uses of IT and develop skills in coding, design, and human computer interaction. Dan Creed, the Head of Learning, for IT, Creative Media and Engineering, commented: ‘I’m really excited to see the students testing their IT knowledge with robotics. In a world where software engineering is becoming more important to everyday life, this is a key skill moving forward for manufacturing, and these kits help develop understanding of

how to use programing to give instruction for machines. The Film Photography Exhibition at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery will display the work of both Paul Holmes and Sarah Ash. Paul and Sarah, the founders of NEG35 Film Photography, are based in Crawley, West Sussex. They are film enthusiasts who like nothing more than going out and shooting film. In this digital age, you might wonder ‘who shoots film anymore?’; however, it is making a surprising comeback with the younger generation, who are

discovering it for the first time, and with the older generation, rediscovering old cameras that have been gathering dust in a long forgotten drawer. Paul and Sarah aim to spread the joy of film through The NEG35 Society. The society hopes to bring together photographers of all ages, from all backgrounds (both hobbyist and professional), to explore a wide range of photography styles, and to express their creativity, and enjoy this voyage of rediscovery together.

Paul’s work covers many fields of interest, but has an emphasis on street photography and images of people going about their everyday lives. You will see photographs from his recent trip to China, along with more local images. Sarah expresses her inspiration via the medium of film, poetry, and multimedia, creating artwork with no digital intervention. Both photographers use photographic film, and wet printing, to create stunning images with the aid of light sensitive paper, chemical processes, and passion. No digital enhancement or processing is used to produce the pictures you see even the poems seen are printed using darkroom exposure overlays or occasionally, a typewriter. In the exhibition, both artists will use additional text to explain their passion, inspiration, techniques. They also invite the public to watch a video on the darkroom developing processes used to create the final prints on display. The Film Photography Exhibition will run from Saturday 12 May to Saturday 11 August 2018. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am5pm, free admission. Top tips for an easy trip to your Recycling Site Spring has finally sprung and the change in weather, and lighter evenings, has seen a big increase in people heading along to a Household Waste Recycling Site (HWRS). Whether tending to the garden, having a spring clean, or a general declutter, a quick run to the local HWRS is, for many of us, a seasonal routine. Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “The past couple of weeks have brought a dramatic improvement in the weather, and at long last we can mow our lawns. As a result, there has been a big increase in residents visiting their local Household Waste Recycling Sites. “This sudden spring surge has led to a number of very busy periods at our facilities across the county, and sometimes quite a queue has built up. “We are advising all users of our sites to make extra time for their visits, and to follow our five top tips to make their visits as quick and hassle free as possible, allowing them to

enjoy the rest of their evenings and weekends as intended.” TOP TIPS 1. If you can, visit during the week, it is often quieter than at a weekend. 2. At the weekend sites tend to be busier first thing in the morning, so go later in the day to make your trip as hasslefree as possible. 3. When finding a space, take the next available free bay rather than waiting for a bay near a particular container. There are members of staff on site who will be happy to help you unload your car. 4. Try and go when you have a full load, this will save you having to do multiple trips. 5. Pack the car in sections, so you group your wood, garden waste, scrap metal etc together. This will allow you to easily unload and get all your stuff in the right container quickly and efficiently. Member of Horsham Bridge Club awarded for outstanding service Gerry Stanford, a stalwart of Horsham Bridge Club for over 40 years, has received Sussex’s top award, the Gladys Hakki Trophy. The trophy is awarded annually to a Sussex member who has given outstanding service to county and club. Gerry has played for the county team and served as Vice-Chairman, Tournament Manager, and Editor of the Year Book. Recently, he has taught youth Bridge, including at Collyer’s and Farlington. Nearly 80% of builders call for licensing scheme to crush the cowboys, says FMB Almost 80% of builders are calling for more regulation in the construction industry to end the tyranny of cowboy builders, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). The FMB is calling on the Government to introduce a licensing scheme in construction as part of its new Agenda ‘Raising the bar: A post-Grenfell agenda for quality and professionalism in construction’. Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Until we introduce a licensing scheme in construction, cowboy builders will continue to run rampant in our industry. Licensing would ensure a minimum level of competence and professionalism and give consumers greater assurance when hiring a builder. Unlike in the US and Germany, anyone can be a builder in the UK. What this means is that we have allowed a significant minority of cowboy builders to give the whole construction industry a bad name. Our latest research shows that almost 80 per cent of our members are so fed up with rogue builders tarnishing their reputation, they are in favour of introducing a licencing scheme. Our research among consum-

ers also shows that one third of home owners in the UK are so anxious about hiring a dodgy builder that they don’t commission any building work whatsoever. What’s more, the average home owner would spend around £40,000 on major home improvement projects over the next five years if they could be guaranteed a positive experience with their builder. It’s time to release this pent up demand for building work through a licensing scheme consumers can trust.” The Grenfell Tower tragedy reminded us of the price paid when things go wrong in the construction industry. Grenfell raised serious questions about standards, regulation and compliance within the construction sector and although we await the results of the Hackitt Review, we want to start a wider conversation about how we can drive up quality and professionalism in construction. As well as calling on the Government to introduce a licensing scheme for builders, the FMB’s new Agenda calls for mandatory warranties for building projects that require building control sign-off to protect consumers further.

Saturday May 5 - Sussex Premier League – 50 over game Roffey 281-7 (50 overs) Middleton 117 all out (31.3 overs) Roffey won by 164 runs – Roffey 30 points – Middleton 6 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In 2015 Roffey did the double over Middleton, condemning them to relegation with a home thrashing, despite a cameo from Sussex’s Jofra Archer. Middleton, though, bounced back into the Premier League at the first opportunity and have been a side to respect. But, last Saturday at their most pleasant Sea Lane ground they were outplayed in every aspect of the game. Inserted, Roffey rattled up by far the highest Premier League score of the day after creating a sound platform and batting consistently throughout, with fif-

ties from Theo Rivers, Jibran Kahn and Ben Manenti. The ground was still damp and soft at the top end and the groundsman said that the conditions had not allowed him to cut the grass as short as he would have liked, so, although Roffey prefer to chase, their 281 was worth in excess of 300. There were no demons in the pitch and Middleton’s bowling was unthreatening, not helped by shoddy ground fielding and Manenti being dropped on 36, en route to 60. Roffey’s 50 came up in the 11th over, and at the half way stage of their innings they were 125-1 with Rivers, elegant and untroubled on 55, and Khan cutting well on 32. Both were out by the 33rd over, Rivers top scoring with 65, but Manenti pushed on and cameos from Usman Khan, Josh Fleming and Stuart Whittingham enabled Roffey to post a very demanding total – when Roffey had 220 on the board,

a Middleton fielder was asked what he thought would be a good score – fearing the worst, he replied: “This! We’ve not got a strong side out today.” To have any chance of mounting a serious challenge Middleton needed to start well, but they were soon 16-2, both openers succumbing to Whittingham’s pace. 53 was reached with the loss of only one further wicket, before Leigh Harrison (5-19) ripped the heart out of Middleton’s batting with a superb triple wicket maiden, beginning with an LBW. The new batsman was bowled first ball and although the hat trick was somehow avoided by his successor, he was hit on the pads twice before being caught. Suddenly Middleton were 53-6. The slide continued when Manenti pulled off a stunning, lifethreatening catch and although some lusty late order blows took Middleton into three figures, the contest had long since been assigned to Roffey, whose Captain - Matt Davies - told the District Post: “That was pretty convincing! I’d have liked to see one of our batsmen get a hundred, but I’m very happy with our excellent start, especially as we’ve got two big games this weekend – on Saturday at home to current champions East Grinstead and then on Sunday we go to Bromley Common in the National Cup.” Coach Simon Fearnley said: “We set out to win well, and that’s what we did. And, last Saturday, against Three Bridges, another former Premier League club, Billingshurst got off to the best possible start – with a strong win after hosts Three Bridges had inserted them. Horsham thrash Haywards Heath in Sussex Cup Sunday May 6 - Sussex GrayNicholls T20 Cup – Round 1 Haywards Heath 87-8 (20 overs) Horsham 88-0 (12-1 overs) Horsham won by 10 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last Sunday at Cricketfield Road Horsham eliminated Haywards Heath from the Sussex Cup in a re-scheduled match following the previous bad weather postponement. It was a completely one-sided affair, even though Horsham had far from their strongest side. Haywards Heath won the toss and elected to bat. They soon regretted the decision. In no time they were 18-3 and although they made a partial recovery to 44-4, progress was very slow and, when further wickets fell, they were not able to set a meaningful target from a parlous 57-6. At the end of their 20 over allocation they had staggered to a totally inadequate 87-8. Replying, Horsham set off in hot pursuit – and made short work of the task. Haywards Heath were unable to take a single wicket, Haines finishing with an unbeaten 42 and evergreen Craig Gallagher 36. Heath’s bowling figures are best not dwelt upon, Horsham winning at a gallop with almost eight overs unused. In their hey day Haywards Heath were one of the town sides then prevalent in the Sussex Premier League and, while they had won in Division 2 the day before and had retained a nucleus of that team, the side put out was not really worthy of the club’s reputation. There seems little point in entering a competition if players have no real interest or commitment in supporting it, reaffirming the declining appetite for once highly popular Sunday cricket. Monday May 7 – Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup Final Haywards Heath Town 4 0 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was YM’s third recent appearance at The Beacon at Hassocks – once in league & now twice in Cup, and they had won on the last two visits – but, this time the result failed to match their hopes. Haywards Heath are promoted League Champions – something that they missed out on last year because of a player registration irregularity – and were on the crest of a wave, whereas, at the end of a very long season, stretching back almost 10 months, YM’s form had slumped dramatically, knocking them off their perch as well-established league leaders in the run in. Although YM had beaten Heath at Gorings Mead in October, they lost 2-0 at Haywards Heath in April, so, with Heath brim full of confidence, this showpiece cup final was likely to be a stiff challenge. YM sorely missed Guy Harding, suspended after a red card versus Newhaven, and they needed to keep it tight up front and frustrate Heath, as they had

done at Gorings Mead. But, in front of a big crown, on Bank Holiday Monday, the hottest day of the year to date, Heath came out with all guns blazing and YM found themselves two goals down within the first quarter of an hour. YM resumed in more positive vein, a Tony Garrod cross coming to nothing before Phil Johnson was floored in the box, only to be penalised for simulation and Luke Gedling and Dan Evans combined well, for the ball to be fired wide. Mid way through the second half Aaron Jeal was yellow carded for an infringement outside the box, but YM were reprieved when the crossbar denied Akehurst his hat trick from the resultant penalty. Earlier Dean Carden had limped off with a suspected broken foot, Charlie Cooke substituting, then Callum Jeal replaced the injured Dave Brown and Mark Cave came on for Sam Schaaf, but the changes did not provide an elusive goal. Although YM had a much better second half, the ultimate denouement came when, the ball was fired straight at Cooke on the YM goal line and he was unable to keep his hands clear, former Horsham player Max Miller making no mistake from the spot to seal Haywards Heath’s deserved 4-0 win. Post match, Peter Bentley said: “Nothing much went right for us today, but, fair play to them – they’re a good outfit.” YM had won the John O’Hara Cup (the predecessor to the Peter Bentley Cup) four times, but the senior side last lifted silverware four years ago. Yet, at the club the 2017-2018 season was memorable overall despite recent disappointments – the seniors finished fourth in the league and got through to the Peter Bentley Final, the reserves reached the semi final of their cup and were in with a possibility of winning their league right up to the end and the Under 18s won their cup in style at the county HQ at Lancing. So, YM is in good shape and the season’s awards will be presented at Gorings Mead on Friday May 18th, the ceremony starting at 7pm.

Horsham review this season and plan ahead Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The season may just have finished, but Horsham are already planning ahead for the next campaign, in what will be a momentous development for the club when they move into their long awaited new ground at Hop Oast. Looking back on last season, Horsham played well on occasions – notably beating the then leaders Lewes on New Year’s Day and overturning strong clubs like Greenwich Borough. But, the Hornets were inconsistent – not helped by a succession of injuries. With 46 league matches, plus some disappointing cup games, it was a long hard season with a bit of madness thrown in – including midweek winter evening trips to the far reaches of East Kent and an early morning flight to Guernsey on Boxing Day. The Hornets finished 15th in the league – one place higher than the previous season – but the move to Hop Oast is destined to herald an up-turn in the club’s fortunes. Meanwhile, reflecting on the season just completed, Manager Dom di Paola said: “What a season! Playing away from Horsham has been harder than any of us expected and we all agree, whilst a necessity, Lancing has not felt like home. Our gates have reflected that, but with the new ground we can see light at the end of the tunnel and we’ll soon be back in Horsham for the first time in over ten years! This has easily been the toughest of my twelve seasons as a manager pre-season saw us put together a squad we felt would improve us. The friendlies were largely positive and we played some fantastic football. But, almost as soon as the season started, the problems began with injuries destroying us within a month. We started well but September was a horror show with players out for months and a few moving on. We took the view we had to re-build. At one stage we had twelve players out injured and others playing out of position or playing when they were not fit or not ready to play at our level. We had to make a change urgently! Our best period of the season was from November to January. We brought in some players, had some good loanees, and flirted with the top ten for a long spell. We even had a slim chance for the play-offs, but February saw a poor run of results and with the weather

taking a turn for the worse, our momentum evaporated. Further injuries to key players meant we were missing some of our star performers so we looked at players for next season, giving a number of them a run of games – in particular some of the younger ones – to see how they did. The results were poor in general, though, and from midMarch we haemorrhaged goals with the team constantly changing. Without some of the more established players we looked lost at times. We have spluttered over the finish line and finished far below where we could have done. Too often we have had to put out sides below the standard of this league and with key players missing we lacked leaders to help the inexperienced players through games, so I draw a line under this season, never to speak of it again! I really hope with the positivity around next season, the new ground, supporters returning and a fresh start we will only be better for the troubles of 2017/18 and I thank our committee and volunteers for their tireless work, in particular Jeff Barrett who is so helpful and kept us going when we had to get players in at the last minute. The whole backstage team have all contributed so much to the management, helping me through some of the darkest periods! As always, the most important part of the club is the supporters - this season has been just as hard for them and their endless encouragement has motivated us to strive to do better in 2018/19.” And, Horsham have appointed a new Head Coach – former Worthing and Eastbourne Borough’s Jon Meeney, Dom di Paola saying: “I’ve known Jon for some time and he’s done pretty well. He was Joint Manager at Worthing and brought them up to the Premier Division. Latterly he has been shadowing the Manager at Eastbourne Borough and has done a lot of work with Worthing’s Academy. He’s an excellent coach, being good with the young players – he has been on my radar for a long time. He will give us good value. We want to produce our own players and Jon has a proven record in doing that – he has done youth team coaching at Brighton and Chelsea.”

Horsham’s dream becoming a happy reality

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s new Hop Oast ground has transformed from an inspiring egg into a chrysalis and, before too much longer it will spread its wings. The historic old Queen Street ground was like a favourite jacket – full of character but more than a little frayed round the edges and the time had come to wish it a fond farewell. Departure from the historic venue seems a lifetime away, since when Horsham have been enduring a nomadic existence, latterly at the Lancing Headquarters of the Sussex FA. Lancing is fine, but it is too far away to encourage support except from diehard fans – and there’s no place like home. The dream of the Hornets’ new ground has often been more of a nightmare. First the club bought the Holbrook Club with the intention of moving there, but, with much to be recommended about the plan, aspirations were dashed when protestors went into overdrive forcing abandonment of the scheme. Then came the search for alternative sites within Hor-

sham’s confines, no easy task, with various options coming onto the radar but fading away like ships in the night. The possibility of a move to the established sporting venue at the Horsham

Masses of earth shifting has taken place and the car park area has been surfaced with a layer of Tarmac Golf & Fitness Centre at Hop Oast then emerged as a strong favourite option, but, again protesters persuaded the council to refuse planning permission. Anxious to be a good neighbour, the club responded to the concerns by re-drawing their proposals and at a dramatic meeting councillors finally gave their overwhelming consent, much to the relief of the club and loyal supporters. Problems over? No! Newts had to be rounded up and re-housed, skyscraper netting needed to be

erected to provide safe separation from the adjacent driving range and a host of other challenges addressed, making a stressful house move appear to be child’s play. Now, though, the end of the interminable saga approaches – a saga stretching back more than 12 years. At last, Horsham Football Club own the freehold land for their new Hop Oast ground and visible activity is under way to turn the Hornets’ dream of a new, modern home into reality. Giving an up-date on the development of the new facility, Horsham CEO John Lines says: “Masses of earth shifting has taken place and the car park area has been surfaced with a layer of Tarmac. Beyond that, the match pitch has started to be levelled and the training pitch will follow. We are currently running on time and on budget thanks to our excellent and thoroughly professional Project Manager, Robin Bishop of TDS and the expert proficiency of our main contractors, Velocity. Robin is Physio for Guernsey FC but is based in Horsham. As a football man, he understands just what we need to achieve and in the next few months the pitches

will have their foundations and drains laid, ready to take the final 3G surface. The biggest item remaining on the agenda is the placing of the contract to build the clubhouse and ancillary buildings for plant storage, laundry room and pitch-side toilet facilities. When is all this going

to be ready for us to play our first game? I would dearly love to give a firm answer but at this point I can only make an educated guess. By the end of June we should have the clubhouse foundations in place, the pitches levelled and be more or less ready to install state of the art LED floodlighting. Soon after that construction of the clubhouse should commence and if all goes well we should be looking at the end of November or so to be ready for opening. That said, we will not arrange our first game until we have tried and tested all aspects - from playing on the pitches to pouring a pint in the bar and ensuring there is hot water in the showers. This will take time but we are getting ready to move home games from Lancing by around mid season. I can’t wait !!” Horsham Football Club was created in 1871 and, having played in Hurst Park and elsewhere, the Queen Street ground opened in 1904. After surviving two world wars, and various ups and downs before, during and since the hostilities, the Hornets will soon create more history with the opening of their iconic new Hop Oast HQ, which is surely destined to become a much coveted venue among their peers and many other teams up and down the leagues.
