Business as usual as Piries Place redevelopment is well underway Horsham’s multi million pound redevelopment of Piries Place is now well underway and is set to ultimately transform the area. Piries Place is an important town centre location for both day time and evening visitors. The regeneration will create a high quality shopping and leisure offer for residents, visitors and businesses which will enhance the existing town centre with the development of a new three screen Everyman cinema, a 92-bed Premier Inn hotel and a range of new restaurant and retail outlets. As the redevelopment work continues it is still very much “business as usual” on the east side of the town as existing retailers and restauranteurs continue to trade in the area. Developers Reef are now in discussion with a number of new retailers and restauranteurs who have expressed an interest in coming to the area, including the Brasserie White Company (Raymond Blanc gastro pub) who have committed to occupying the largest restaurant unit which will front onto the Carfax. On 18 June the existing car park at Piries Place will close to be demolished and replaced by a new modern car park on the same site. The new car park will have more spaces which will be wider than

the spaces in the existing car park, with easier access, which will significantly improve the customer experience. Whilst the new car park is being constructed the Council has organised for additional parking spaces to be made available to the public at its offices at Parkside, Chart Way and in the Dukes Square Car Park behind the Drill Hall in Denne Road. Additionally, a further 33 car parking spaces will be available in the Hurst Road Car Park (Pavilions In The Park) as the reconfiguration of this car park is scheduled to be complete as the Piries Place car park closes. Toilets during this redevelopment phase will be available at the Capitol, the Forum, the bus station, Pavilions In The Park Leisure Centre (full disabled access Changing Places provision) and Swan Walk Shopping Centre. Please note that in Swan Walk Shopping Centre the toilets have been relocated to the top of Springfield Court Mall near Wilkinsons until further notice. The redevelopment of the car park and shopping and leisure area are set to be completed by mid- 2019. Hundreds of women united against cancer on Sunday by taking part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at Horsham Park. Over 650 women of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes showed their incredible commitment to the cause as they took their place at the start line to help beat cancer sooner. Now organisers of the 5k event are sending a heart-felt message of thanks to everyone who took part and all their supporters. And they’re asking them to make every step count by paying in their sponsorship money as soon as possible so that it can be used to fund life-saving research. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy, Half Marathon and Hiking events which raises millions of pounds every year to find new ways to tackle cancer. Jessica Edwards, Cancer Research UK’s Horsham Events Manager, said: “Life-saving research is being funded right now thanks to people like the women

of Horsham who join the fight at Race for Life. “By taking part and raising money, our participants play a crucial role in helping to turn discoveries made in the lab into new, better treatments for patients in Horsham and across the UK and we’d like to thank everyone who took part in the event on Sunday. “The atmosphere on the day was hugely moving - full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter - as people came together to remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those dear to them who have survived. Race for Life offers a unique opportunity for like-minded ladies to unite against a disease that affects us all in some way. “Now we’re asking everyone who took part, and all the friends, family and colleagues who pledged to sponsor them, to return the money they’ve raised as soon as possible. Money raised - whether it’s £10 or £100 - will help Cancer Research UK scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, helping save more lives.”

One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Dr Áine McCarthy, Cancer Research UK’s Senior Science Communications Officer, said: “There are over 200 types of cancer and we need continued investment in research to help us find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat them all. That’s why we need everyone who took part in Race for Life in Horsham to take the vital last step by returning their sponsorship money so that our scientists, doctors and nurses can continue to make vital strides forward in research.” Sponsorship money can be paid online, by phone, by cheque or in person at a Cancer Research UK shop. Following last night’s meeting of Horsham District Council, a new Chairman has been elected. Cllr Peter Burgess was elected Chairman of Horsham District Council for the civic year 2018 to 2019 at the Council’s Annual Meeting in Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham on Wednesday 23 May 2017. Cllr Kate Rowbottom was appointed the Vice Chairman of the Council. Cllr Burgess has been the Interim Chairman of the Council since the sad passing of previous Chairman Cllr Roger Clarke in March 2018. Commenting on his election, Cllr Burgess said: “I am deeply honoured to be elected Chairman of Horsham District Council for the coming year. “We all know how special the Horsham district is with its beautiful countryside and South Downs and our historic market towns and villages. It’s the envy of many other districts. “I look forward over the coming year to meeting as many people as possible across Horsham district – those who work tirelessly in the voluntary sector and in support of our local charities, those who provide jobs and work here and those who study, teach and live here as well as those in the Armed Forces and those who keep us safe – the police, fire and the ambulance services.”

Broadbridge Heath church unveils new mural St. John’s Church in Broadbridge Heath commissioned local artist and book illustrator, Nicola Bridgman, to create a mural for the church hall, which was unveiled on Sunday (3 June), by Rev. Paddy Beresford. The mural is in honour of his 6 years’ service to the church, and in appreciation of the love and dedication that he and his wife have brought to both the church and to the village community. It is his upcoming retirement in September that St. John’s has marked with this occasion. The church committee had thought that an artwork would add vibrancy and attraction to the hall; the colourful mural measures 6m long and 1.5m high. The inspiration for the work came from Pieter Bruggel’s painting ‘The Blue Cloak’ in which he portrayed

more than 100 Dutch proverbs. Nearly 500 years later, Nicola Bridgman, who has given freely of her time to creating this work, has depicted nearly 30 of Christ’s parables in one scene. For this work, Nicola has used a graphics tablet and digital pen. She explained: “There is a multitude of artist tools; brushes, charcoals, pastels, pens and pencils, with so many options and settings that make any style and medium possible in digital format. I was able to sketch the mural directly in the software to build up layers of the various characters and cameo scenes to form the complete whole.” Local company, BEL Signs, have mounted and hung the print for free, as a ‘service to the community’ - their MD, Peter Bedford, also lives in the village.

IS YOUR WIFE / HUSBAND / PARTNER /PARENT A POTENTIAL LIABILITY? Most people in Horsham work hard to make their money. Having made it they want to enjoy spending it, keep what they don’t spend and, when the time comes to depart this mortal world, pass what’s left on to their nearest and dearest. What most of them (us included!) don’t want is to pay unnecessary amounts to the Government or local authority – we’ve been doing that all of our lives! It requires careful planning, and families with a member or members approaching their senior years should do just that. They say ‘you can’t take it with you’, but the last thing you want to do is give it away senselessly outside of the family. Planning for the possibility of care Uppermost in many people’s minds is ‘care’ and paying a small fortune for it. As a concept, the need for care is a fairly recent one. But on one level we live in a world of ‘nuclear’ rather than ‘extended’ families, where fewer people have the capacity to care for their ‘old folks’. At the same time many more people own property – say what you will about Maggie Thatcher, her 1980 ‘Right to Buy’ act created a whole new class of homeowners who bought property at a deep discount, saw values soar and now have unexpected wealth. Whether or not, in a welfare state, we agree with the concept of paid for care, many more people have the resources to pay.

The husband has £300,000 in his estate that the local authority will have every right to have first dibs on. The same would be true of ISAs or any other wealth. Independent accounts and ‘tenants-in-common’ If our family want to ring-fence the family wealth, or at least a proportion of it, for future generations, it’s best if they can create their own individual estate. In the case of property they should amend the deeds to show that they are ‘tenants in common’ – that is to say that each owns a proportion of the property in their own right. In the case of an ISA, if the family saves a total of £4,000 a year it should be split into two individual accounts, one in each name. It keeps at least half of the wealth safe. You need a will – but that’s not always enough Having a will is important, but you still need to be careful as joint accounts can circumvent a will. We know a case where a couple, faced with the wife going into care, decided to sell the home they had owned as tenants in common. The wife’s wish, in the will she made before she became ill, had been for her half of the property to be split between her son and two grandchildren.

Factor-in that the current older population is living much longer, and that diseases like Alzheimer’s are ever more prevalent, which eventually requires nursing care, and it’s no surprise that living to a ripe old age can be a poisoned chalice.

However, the proceeds went into the joint bank account. When the wife died the husband claimed all the cash was his because it was ‘jointly-owned’ – so he kept the lot. The son and grandchildren could have taken legal action but decided there was no point, just because of costs.

The ‘joint-account’ conundrum

On a ‘what’s mine is your and what’s yours is mine basis’, holding your wealth jointly with your spouse or partner is very romantic. When it comes to protecting the family wealth, it can also be a big mistake.

Horsham ushers in two weekends of fine art

The next two weekends see top Horsham artists open their studios, or get together at 15 selected venues in 15 postcodes throughout RH12 to RH20. The locations encompass Mannings Heath, Warnham, Billingshurst, and West Chiltington round to Partridge Green and Cowfold. If you enjoy the arts, it makes for a good day or two out and about. The work on show ranges from paintings, through sculpture, to jewellery in a wide variety of gton ool styles including classic figurative art, cubism, abstract work and 3D ‘found art’ in a cross-section of media. All work is for sale and the trail offers a great opportunity for collectors, or want-to-be collectors, to acquire quality work at ‘studio door’ prices. Feed your compost, reduce your waste People in West Sussex are being urged to start home composting to help reduce the amount of rubbish they throw away. In West Sussex, almost 32 per cent of an average household bin is food waste, but did you know that a large proportion of this is ideal for making compost? As well as recycling hedge clippings and grass cuttings into nutrient-rich soil, home composting is also a sure-fire way to ensure you keep green and organic kitchen waste from going in the bin. Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “With recycling a hot topic in the media, lots of people are looking at other ways they can reduce their waste as much as possible. “People don’t realise that things like vegeta-

ble peelings, shredded paper and egg shells are the perfect addition to general gardening waste, which combines to make great compost which will help keep your plant pots and borders in tip top condition. “I would recommend that anyone, who has the space for a compost bin, invests in one, as they are a fantastic addition and can give you compost (and a sense of satisfaction) in as little as six weeks with the right conditions.” If you’re not already an avid home composter and want to do more to reduce your carbon footprint, why not get yourself a compost bin? Local author debuts with a real Cliffhanger !

News Martin Read - Reporter Local author Cliff Comber has just launched his first book – Running for his Lives – and it’s a cracker. Drawing on his considerable experience when he was a police officer, Cliff provides a great insight into police tactics at briefings and how detective work operates – the thinking, the suspicions, the deductions and

the pursuit of justice. After scenesetting build up, a fast moving, tense page turner takes off with excellent dialogue and bandinage. Conversation is not always easy to write, but Cliff has nailed it. Principal character Dutch French was determined to rid himself of the nightmare memories of his childhood; orphaned as an infant when his father was killed in action, his mother’s subsequent suicide had a profound effect. Constant bullying and humiliation, combined with a disadvantaged lifestyle throughout his early years, caused his behaviour to deteriorate. However, all changed for the better when, following in his father’s footsteps, Dutch joined the Army, immediately enhancing his life. Due to an unusual but fortunate assignment, he meets and marries Melanie. During years of happy marriage and a long, distinguished military career, a number of near-death experiences fuel a conviction that he really did have nine lives. But, after using up some of these when surviving several life threatening incidents, he established a more peaceful existence. This, though was shattered when his wife is viciously assaulted and raped, triggering a series of fatal events, changing their lives forever. Running for his Lives is a very

imaginative and completely authentic work. When did Cliff first have the idea? “About three and a half years ago!” Cliff tells the District Post, continuing: “And, I worked on it, developing the story during that time and the events described just clicked into place.” The book tests readers with moral issues – clearly Dutch French has strong principles, but the lust for revenge takes over: what can he do to avenge the wrongs suffered? Drastic, secretive, but clinical action is planned and executed - will he get away with it? Should crime be allowed to pay? And, what happens in the sudden, chilling denouement? After his excellent debut novel what more writing projects does Cliff Comber have – is there another thriller in the offing? Cliff says: “It was a big job getting Running for his Lives onto book shelves – but I do have an idea for a sequel, so I’d love to explore that possibility!” Meanwhile, Cliff’s book is available from Waterstones in Horsham – and from Amazon, who describe it as ‘An explosive story of love, myth and ultimate retribution’. And, Cliff will be at the Cootes Farm Summer Fayre at Horsham’s Merryfield Drive this Saturday, June 9th – 2-4pm when he will be pleased to sign copies of Run for his Lives.

Held on a glorious day in the wonderful setting of the Sussex Roof Garden suite at Goodwood Racecourse, the event was organised by Business Pulse’s founder, Nass, a long term supporter and Business Ambassador of Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity. Throughout the day, guests enjoyed a lunch and performance of a selection of jazz songs by Susan Fleet, accompanied by her pianist, Michael Hinton, followed by an afternoon of racing, with a raffle raising funds for the Charity. Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity supports children under 5 years of age who have cerebral

palsy, and other motor learning disabilities, at its Centre in Cuckfield, West Sussex. The Charity were privileged to be joined by the Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex, John Nelson, CBE, who was kind enough to say a few words of introduction. Ann Wenn, whose son Sebbie attended Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity, was then invited to talk about the difference the Charity has made to their lives, and the positive impact this has had on Sebbie. She went on to say that, for them, the Charity is magical and they call it their place of hope. Pilar Cloud, Executive Manager of the Charity, said: “This Charity has been overwhelmed by the generosity of all the business leaders who chose to support us at this glorious day of racing at Goodwood. It was an honour to

have Ann and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, John Nelson, in attendance. “So much has changed for this Charity over the past year or so, and we would not have been able to relocate to our beautiful new home in Cuckfield, or to be able to support now over 40 families with access to free weekly hands-on early intervention sessions, music therapy, swimming sessions, as well as Outreach support in their own homes, without the incredible generosity shown by Nass and his Business Pulse network.” Since the Charity was established in 2001, it has helped more than 500 families across the South East. No fault divorce-nine out of ten Local causes shortlisted lawyers agree..on something! for £500 funding By Nigel Winter, Partner at DMH Stallard And that is that reform of the divorce laws is long overdue. Incredibly the law hasn’t changed since 1973 – during which time we can all agree there has been a few social changes. The biggest problem is that currently in law someone has to be at ‘fault’. However, in reality, there can be very few who actually believe that relationships break down solely and exclusively because of one solitary party. Yet you still have to ‘blame’ your spouse or wait anything between two or five years. This preliminary step takes place against a backdrop of the courts rightly encouraging

parties to settle matters relating to finances and children amicably and indeed by way of mediation if possible. It hardly enhances the prospect when the whole process gets under way with one party ‘pointing the finger’ at the other and in cases of alleged ‘adultery’ and ‘unreasonable behaviour’ actually seeking a court order that they pay the other party’s legal costs! A great start? The calls for ‘no fault divorce’ have become louder recently with the family lawyers professional body Resolution, increasing their calls for reform. Whilst lawyers may not agree on everything, nine out of ten lawyers that practise family law do agree that the current law makes it harder to reduce conflict and confrontation. As a consequence of the ‘blame requirement’, some 60% of divorces in England cited either adultery or unreasonable behaviour as a ground for divorce, compared with a mere 6% in Scotland. And of those English divorce’s (the 60%?), well over a quarter admitted the

allegation, even though it was false, purely and simply because it was the easiest option. This must be wholly unsatisfactory. Indeed research underlines that blame-based divorce often aggravates feelings of injustice and recrimination as well as making it harder for the parties to put the children first. The solution? Resolution proposes reform of the existing law whereby parties can divorce on the basis that neither is at ‘fault’. This would simply involve one or both parties giving ‘notice’ that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. The divorce can then proceed and after a period of six months, if either or both think they are still making the right decision, the divorce is finalised. Notwithstanding the speed at which law reform occurs (often painfully slowly), many family lawyers adhere to a code of conduct that strives to keep conflict to a minimum. Following the launch of builders’ merchant D.W. Nye’s second round of funding for its ‘Proud to be Local’ campaign, once again it’s down to the public to decide who wins the £500 of funds. D.W. Nye, which is giving away £500 each to four different community groups, and good causes, in the county of Sussex during 2018, has shortlisted three more causes for the second round of funds. It’s now inviting the public to cast their votes for their favourite. The group receiving the most votes will be declared the winner. There will be two further opportunities for residents to make nominations at later dates, which will be announced throughout the year. The three causes that have been shortlisted for May’s round of funding are: Slinfold CE Primary School A small village church school with 150 pupils. It’s looking to refurbish two satellite classrooms and will need £35,000 to transform them into inviting, pleasant places to learn. Unfortunately, government cut backs in recent years mean that schools have little in the way of money to carry out remedial works and finding funds is incredibly difficult. The school is currently running a fundraising campaign to undertake this work and £500 would make a

huge difference. Southwater Youth Project Who runs youth clubs, after school clubs and holiday activities for children and young people in Southwater. It would like £500 to invest in resources for its clubs including renovating the pool table, buying new pool balls and cues, and purchasing a Nintendo switch with games. Holbrook Animal Rescue A family run, non-profit organisation based in Horsham set up to help provide loving new homes for animals including dogs and cats. The £500 would go towards maintaining its facilities and helping to provide food and medical attention for the animals in its care. Votes can be cast in three different ways. Either by visiting D.W. Nye’s depot in Kingsfold and posting a token in the relevant voting box, clicking the chosen group on the poll that will be pinned to the top of D.W. Nye’s Facebook page, or by emailing proudtobelocal@dwnye. co.uk and putting the name of the group being voted for in the subject line. Duplicate votes from the same email account will not be counted. Comedy Beats will make its second appearance at The Holbrook Club, Horsham, this month, following a successful show in November. Mark Coxon, the man behind its creation, was delighted to be invited back. Both he and The Holbrook Club are “hoping this one will be even better”. Years ago, the two of us had to split a compering gig over several hours for a Unison Rally in Trafalgar Square. There must have been 10,000 people there that day. This June, The Hawth will be paying tribute to some of the great men in music: Rod Stewart’s songs will be brought to the stage in charasmatic style in ‘Some Guys Have All the Luck’, the definitive Pink Floyd Experience ‘Think Floyd’ return, and the world’s number one ‘Eric Clapton’ tribute comes to the Studio. Some Guys Have All the Luck, Wednesday 20 June 7.30pm Paul Metcalfe delivers an authentic and charismatic performance as Rod Stewart; from the distinctive vocals to the swaggering showmanship and sheer fun that has made Rod one of the most-loved performers of all time. Some Guys Have All the Luck charts Rod Stewart’s career chronologically, and highlights some of the significant strokes of luck which helped the rock legend during his stellar career. It is important to ‘stress-test’ your finances, making sure they can withstand any increase in rates - but experts are not expecting any major rises in the very near future. Rohit Jagota with 48 and Jibran Khan 58, both batting well again, took a particular liking to the change bowlers, with straight fours and sixes. Jagota subsequently fell to a superb low catch by former Roffey batsman Mike Norris, but 36 from Ben Manenti, 29 from Josh Fleming and 34 from Usman Khan kept Roffey firmly on course, until Paul Harrison twisted the knife with 3 long sixes and 2 fours in his unbeaten 36 not out. Two more former Roffey players, Andy McGorian and Dan Smith, each took two wickets, Ifield managing a measure of containment around the 30 over mark, but with the long, tufty outfield Roffey’s 266-7 was worth at least 300, probably more. Aiming to peg back Ifield early on to push up the run rate, Jagota took a wicket in the third over and when he subsequently dismissed recent centurian Norris courtesy of another of Leigh Harrison’s stunning slip catches, Ifield had more than a mountain to climb. A suicidal run out executed by Manenti, accompanied by wickets from Alex Collins and Leigh Harrison then reduced Ifield to 22-5. Batsmen were coming in and out even more regularly than planes at nearby Gatwick, and a 200 run Roffey victory beckoned. However, having caught everything in pre-match practice, one of Roffey’s opening batsmen – not Jagota – demonstrated that his normally safe hands are not invincible by dropping four catches, but that did nothing to prevent Roffey’s completely overwhelming win, a brief late flurry being Ifield’s sole display of defiance. Roffey Coach Simon Fearnley told us: “We got a killer score, Paul’s cameo put the icing on the cake. Then we got among their batsmen and it was game over really.” This Saturday Roffey, now 2 points clear of Brighton at the top of the table, are back at home to welcome Hastings in the first round of 110 over league matches this season, then, on Sunday, Roffey travel to Birdham near Chichester to take on former Premier League side Stirlands in Round 2 of the Sussex Cup.

Hastings went on to post a demanding 263, only for Horsham, seemingly cruising to victory, to undergo a mid life crisis - until overseas player Mika Ekstrom smashed a six off the last available ball to grab 30 much-needed points. patchy affair, with seven batsmen failing to reach double figures: Billings run-a-ball score included 17 fours and a six, Josh Beeslee batting at 9 made 35 and Jake Woolley 24, otherwise Billings had little support. Jamie Thornely was Horsham’s most successful bowler with 4-65, while Nick Oxley and Paul Williams each took two wickets, Sussex’s Will Beer was unavailable after being hit on the head during a 2nd XI match at Hove and Tom Haines was unable to bowl because of a shoulder injury. We deserved to win and it was all going to plan, but then I thought we’d thrown it away. It was a good team effort, though, with everyone playing their part. Back to back wins have really given us a lift, moving us up to 5th.” Six-hitting Mika Ekstrom added: “After Billings batted really well we showed great character to get back into the game through good bowling by Jamie and PJ (Williams). Then Tom and Michael batted brilliantly, and I thought I wouldn’t be needed! My first ball was short, so I anticipated that the last ball of the match might be fuller, and fortunately I read that right and managed to get hold of it – we only required three, but I just wanted to make sure!” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham return home to take on secondplaced Brighton, who made 303-6 to beat Eastbourne (for whom Hockley scored 111). For Brighton Sussex’s Phil Salt battered 172 with 12 sixes, while former pro Matt Machan made 65. Tunbridge Wells are fourth in the top flight of the strong Kent Cricket League and on Saturday they had bowled out reigning champions Beckenham for 90 to win by 137 runs, but they were no match for Roffey at the Crawley Road ground last Sunday. This was the Kent side’s second successive cup defeat at Roffey last year they were bowled out for 164, when Alex Collins took 5-10 in three overs before Roffey won by six wickets with more than 13 overs to spare, subsequently causing Tunbridge Wells to lodge a failed appeal for a replay because they were displeased with the wicket passed fit by the umpires, and which Wells had agreed to bat on during the game. This time Roffey’s victory was even more pronounced, yet, at 59-1 in the 12th over the visitors were well placed, but when they lost 5 wickets for 24 runs in 8.3 overs they were

mortally wounded, Roffey’s support bowlers Theo Rivers (3-21), Mark Pavlovic (2-12) and former Leicestershire wicketkeeper Paul Harrison with 1-22 doing the damage, Rohit Jagota returning 3-20 and fellow opening bowler Leigh Harrison 1-27. Roffey had the brakes full on and although Wells produced a dogged 37 run seventh wicket stand, they then lost their last four wickets for five runs as they slid to a desultory 125 all out. After tea, which Tunbridge Wells rightly described as fantastic – it was certainly more wholesome than their batting – Roffey hustled to a clinical win, Jagota scoring a rapid 50 before Rivers and Jibran Khan finished unbeaten on 40 and 29 respectively with 22.4 overs unused. Roffey skipper Matt Davies told us: “I had a few qualms about putting them in on such a nice day for batting, particularly as Barney (Roffey spinner Luke Barnard) is out injured, but I’m more than happy with the outcome, of course – especially after our great league win yesterday, when our three other teams also all won. A great weekend for the club!” The wicket was hardly a minefield, but Tunbridge Wells rued the absence of a quality spinner and said that, like many other clubs, they are finding it difficult to field a strong

side on a Sunday – but they did have Christian Davis in their ranks, who had made the record individual score for Sussex 2nd XI – 258 not out, against Glamorgan. A Wells supporter said: “We need to learn how to build an innings, we were in trouble yesterday but batted through it. This is not a happy hunting ground for us!” In Round 4, on Sunday June 24th, Roffey travel to the Rectory Field, Charlton Road, London SE3 to take on Blackheath, who won the National Cup in 2015. Blackheath are current leaders of the Kent League and last Sunday they came to East Grinstead and restricted them to 162-9 off their 40 over allocation before eliminating them by 8 wickets with just under 14 overs still in the bank.

West Chiltington win the Lions six-a-side competition Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Thirteen teams battled in the annual six-a-side colts trophy at Cranleigh School, the event jointly promoted by Horsham Lions Club and the IDentilam Colts Cricket League. Two age groups were involved – Under 14s, with seven teams playing for The Horsham Lions Challenge Cup and Plate, and five sides in the U16 category competing for The IDentilam League Trophy. This was the fourth time that Cranleigh School had kindly hosted the event, the outstanding facilities inspiring the young players. Throughout the day teams from Sussex and Surrey clubs contested on a round robin basis with some hard-fought local derbies with most games going down to the wire in the 10 over matches. Ansty, Brighton & Hove, Lindfield and last year’s winners West Chiltington qualified for the knockout stages, while Barns Green A & B, Horsham and Southwater were in the Plate. Of the local teams in the U14 competition, West Chiltington beat Ansty in the semi final with a blistering 40-0 off just three overs and Barns Green B went through with Horsham in the Plate, in

which final Horsham posted 60-0, Ollie Haines scoring 41 batting with Harry Setterfield. Horsham then restricted Southwater to 29-2. In the Cup competition Lindfield were kept to 43-1 before West Chiltington knocked off the runs with nine balls to spare thanks to Charlie Tear’s 25 and 15 from Theo Trevelyan-Carter. In the U16 tournament Southwater and West Chiltington A got through to the final with level points. West Chiltington batted first, notching up 77-1, Alex Tatchell leading the way with 33, Southwater replying with 44-4. Horsham Lions’ President and Peter Garland, Secretary of the IDentilam League congratulated the teams for their feast of cricket and praised the umpires, scorers, administrators for making the event such a great success, paying particular tribute to the providers and organisers of the refreshments enjoyed during the day. Enjoyable fundraisers at Cottesmore Golf & Country Club Golf Martin Read - Sports Reporter In her first year as Ladies’ Captain at Cottesmore Golf Club Horsham’s Heather Skinner is continuing with her programme of charity fundraising events, telling the District Post: “Our latest venture was to organise a very successful day of golf raising another £820 for the Heads On mental health charity. The event took the format of an ‘open day’ for lady golfers

from across various clubs in Surrey and Sussex. Aided by beautiful weather, the course playing superbly and spectacular views with the rhododendrons in full bloom, 71 ladies participated, ably served by 15 Cottesmore ladies. Money was raised through donations, a raffle, halfway house refreshments and stall holders who sold clothes, make up, handbags and other artefacts, kindly donating a percentage of their takings. It really was a wonderful day with

many of the ladies commenting on the simplicity of the event and the welcome they were given by Cottesmore stalwarts. Most important though, is of course the funds raised for this very worthwhile charity and I give heartfelt thanks to all those who helped me organise and run the event.” Heather added: “Quite rightly there is now a focus on mental health provision – one in four of us experience it at some point in our lives and most of us knows a

They’re local, with excellent facilities at Langley Green, which they’re keen to develop further. They work in partnership with the NHS to make things better for those in need of help by introducing a range of projects, including provision of a gym to boost mental health, and other ways to assist patients and families – from across Sussex and beyond.” Heather started her programme with a coffee morning, followed by a quiz evening – when participants enjoyed a meal for a modest £12 and participated in the raffle. A little later a sponsored walk,
