‘It was a great blessing that nobody was hurt’ martin read

Members, staff and visitors are shocked and saddened by the substantial fire damage inflicted on the much loved Cottesmore Hotel, Spa and Country Club’s buildings in Buchan Hill between the villages of Colgate and Pease Pottage.

The fire service received calls for assistance at 17.03 on Monday and immediately attended to find a well developed and rapidly spreading fire with roaring flames and black smoke billowing skywards. A further 10 fire engines were deployed, along with specialist vehicles equipped with ladders and an Ariel Ladder Platform. 60 firefighters were on site, working in shifts and specialist officers remained overnight and on Tuesday to continue damping down. Forensic investigations are underway to establish the cause of the blaze, which the fire service estimates to have severely

damaged 50 per cent of the main building, extinguishment water and smoke also having taken their toll. The premises were evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Roffey Cricket Club Chairman Mark Hamilton told the District Post: “I’ve been a member at Cottesmore for years and, on Monday, I had been in the gym and was heading for the pool when the fire broke out. I grabbed a fire extinguisher, but it quickly became obvious that the fire was out of control, being fanned by the breeze, so all I could was to pick up my clothes and get outside. It was horrendous and really upsetting - this is such a nice club, but the staff did well to get everyone out.” Cottesmore General Manager Johnny Porter said: “Our first objective was to ensure that everyone was safe and it is a great blessing that nobody was hurt. We’ve got a fantastic team here and we’re all pulling together to get as many activities as possible back up and running as quickly as we can.”

Richard says: “Jackie at Cottesmore was brilliant with our arrangements and we made the booking a long time ago.

We’re very sorry that we won’t be able to have our ceremony and celebrations there, but Cottesmore have been as helpful as they could be and we’ve managed to rearrange our wedding at a registry office and now need to find a venue to accommodate the 100 people coming to our reception!”

The beautiful Cottesmore golf course has a surprising history: it

was originally a farm, with buildings (which became the clubhouse) built by some of the many French prisoners in Britain in 1815 at the end of the Napoleonic wars.

The golf course opened in 1975, with another course added in 1983 before, nine years later, the country club complex, complete with

its superb indoor pool, health and beauty club and fully licensed function rooms came on stream.

Nine hotel rooms were provided in 2002 and seven, two-bedroom holiday lodges in 2007. Prior to the fire work was in hand to further enhance the facilities for disabled members and visitors.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) has launched its first People’s Choice Award, where patients, carers, families, and members of the public across Sussex can nominate a member of staff or a team.

The People’s Choice Award recognises exceptional and unexpected acts of care and consideration shown by SCFT staff. The award gives patients, and other people who come into contact with SCFT, the opportunity to show their appreciation for the care and commitment shown to them.

As part of its annual staff awards, the Trust has launched 10 other categories for its staff to nominate their colleagues.

Categories include Apprentice of the Year, Compassionate Care,

Inclusive Leader, and Newcomer of the Year.

A Horsham woman, who sold fake designer goods on Facebook, has been brought to justice following an investigation by West Sussex Trading Standards.

Cerise Evans, 31 (Oakhill Road, Horsham) has been issued with a 12 month community order, involving 120 hours of unpaid work.

Trading Standards received complaints in October and December 2016 that Evans was sellingcounterfeit items on Facebook under the name ‘Pinky Smith.’

An officer made a test purchase of Ugg boots and Rayban sunglasses in May 2017. These were confirmed as fakes.

A warrant was then granted to enter Evans’ home, and counterfeit goods, including Ugg boots, Rolex watches and Michael Kors bags, were seized.

Letters were also found, from Surrey and Buckinghamshire Trading Standards services, warn-

ing her against the sale of fake goods in 2015 and 2016.

Debbie Kennard, Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “I would like to thank our Trading Standards service for bringing this individual to justice.

“Deceiving people into buying fake items is a serious offence that hurts both innocent buyers and legitimate businesses.

“I hope this outcome will deter anyone tempted to sell fake, branded goods in West Sussex.”

Trading Standards Team Manager, Richard Sargeant, added: “We are committed to stopping the sale of fake goods in our county and will pursue anyone undertaking this illegal activity.”

Horsham STEMfest sparks young people into life!

HORSHAM ARTISTS OPEN STUDIOS Over two weekends from 10am to 5pm

9th-10th June and 16th-17th June 2018 Hundreds of children and their parents found themselves transported into an amazing world of science, technology, engineering and maths, as Horsham STEMfest took over Horsham’s Carfax on Saturday (9 June).

Organised by Horsham District Council, in partnership with STEM Sussex at Brighton University and supported by the Horsham Business Enterprise Partnership, and the Careers and Enterprise Company, the event was aimed at creating an engaging and exciting environment

for children, between the ages of 7 and 13, to start learning about and loving STEM subjects.

The country has a shortage of engineers and scientists, and Horsham STEMfest is just one event provided by STEM Sussex, which inspires young people to engage with STEM. On 27 and 28 June, the annual BIG BANG STEM festival will take place at Ardingly showground, where thousands of school children will be able to engage with interactive activities and shows all about the STEM subjects.

Council revokes Horsham restaurant’s premises license

Following a premises license review application submitted by the South-East Immigration Compliance & Enforcement team based at Gatwick airport, Horsham District Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee took the decision to revoke the premises license of The Rajkumar, Springfield Road, Horsham.

This was confirmed at a review hearing of the Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee on Monday

MP visits award-winning Crown Inn at Dial Post

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert visited The Crown Inn at Dial Post last month (12 May) to congratulate the owners on winning the Countryside Alliance award for Best Pub in the South East of England.

Mr Herbert met James and Penny Middleton-Burn at their award-winning pub to hear more about their ‘Rural Oscar’. The pair have been running the pub and restaurant for the last 12 years.

Penny’s grandparents, Jack and Bunny, owned and ran the pub in 1960s and 1970s.

The Crown Inn was one of 11,000 businesses nominated in the annual Countryside Alliance awards. Now in its 13th year, the awards celebrate rural businesses in the categories of Best Local Food & Drink, Best Village Shop, Best Butcher and Best Rural Enterprise.

As winners in their category, James and Penny attended a special awards evening at the House of Lords. Their award recognises the use of local produce which is sourced from nearby farms and businesses. A nose-to-tail ap-

proach is adopted in the kitchen to ensure nothing is wasted.

There is no shop or church in Dial Post, so James and Penny have created a village hub with the broadest appeal. Their pub is used for committee meetings and club gatherings, as well as bringing the community together through regular special events.

James and Penny said: “We were delighted that our local MP Nick Herbert came to visit us following our Countryside Alliance award for Best Pub in the South East.”

Penny added: “As fourth generation of a Dial Post farming family, I have first-hand experience of life in a rural community, and the award feels particularly personal having lived here most of my life. It is great that Nick is on board in helping to promote country life and rural businesses.”

Mr Herbert said: “It was a pleasure to meet Penny and James and to congratulate them on their award. It was good to see that they are championing South Downs produce on their menu, and I enjoyed a delicious lunch.

“I am very pleased to have two Countryside Alliance award winners in my constituency, the other being The Amberley Village Stores.”

Crazy Colour Run hits Pulborough Children at St Mary’s CofE (Aided) Primary School seized the chance to cover their teachers in neon colour powder at Pulborough’s first Colour Run which was held on the school playing fields on Sunday 10 June as part of their Summer Fayre.

“It was an amazing day with so many people taking part in the run from the very youngest in the school to grandparents,” said Sam Copus, Acting Head Teacher. “All the children were covered in every colour you could think of as they ran but the main colour attacks were saved for our brave teachers’ race when we were all, quite literally, completely coloured in.”

This was the first time a colour run was incorporated as part of the St Mary’s Summer Fayre which attracted many former students and their families coming back to join the fun.

There was also a barbecue, drinks marquee, ice creams and a grand

draw along with lots of popular stalls including hook-a-duck & lucky dip and a wonderful country dancing display.

Jenny Liu, Chair of the Friends of St Mary’s PTA, helped to organise the event: “We’ve had fantastic feedback from everyone who joined the fun so hopefully this will become a regular feature in future.

It was an absolute blast and created a real carnival atmosphere on a sunny Sunday afternoon - as well as a chance for the children to get back at their teachers with masses of colour powder!”

by LMC and all the money raised from the Fayre will go towards the Friends of St Mary’s fund which raises thousands of pounds each year, some of which has recently enabled significant upgrading to the school’s open air swimming pool which is being enjoyed by all the children at St Mary’s this summer.

Bristol in September 2015 by City to Sea, who campaign on plastic pollution, and there are now over 10,000 Refill Stations around the UK. The idea, like most of the best ones, is simple - promote refilling a water bottle and cut the number of plastic bottles being thrown away. With millions of plastic bottles being used daily across the UK, and almost half of them not being recycled, the potential impact is huge.

With public awareness of plastic pollution increasing, we know we all need to act Refill is coming to Horsham District!

The Refill campaign aims to make filling up your reusable water bottle as easy and convenient as possible. By encouraging more businesses to offer free tap water refills, and promoting the installation of water fountains, it hopes to convince people to refill - rather than buying single use plastic bottles.

The campaign was started in

Local group, Kinder Living, have signed up to be the official local partner of the national Refill campaign, and taken on the challenge of recruiting businesses to become ‘Refill Stations’. Kinder Living organise events and run a website, which aims to encourage homeowners to make more sustainable choices.

know they can ask for their water bottle to be filled with tap water, free of charge. For those with a smart phone, there’s a free app to download, which provides a map of all the Refill Stations in the area.

Kinder Living spokesperson, Jeanette Mercer, explained: “With public awareness of plastic pollution increasing, we know we all need to act. Kinder Living is about making positive changes, doing what we can, when we can, to make our homes and lives a bit more sustainable. Refill fits perfectly with this, which is why we are so happy to lead the scheme for Horsham District. The beauty of Refill is that everyone can take part. We hope businesses and the public will support us in making Refill - Horsham District a great success.”

Local students raise more than Win £400 prize for an £21,000 for St Catherine’s Hospice office hero in Horsham

Local school students have collectively raised more than £21,000 for terminally ill people, as part of the St Catherine’s Hospice Five-O Project.

Designed to develop students’ business skills, St Catherine’s FiveO Project challenged students to unleash their inner entrepreneurs.

It asked them to organise fundraising events that would raise a minimum of £1,500 for St Catherine’s, with the support of business mentors from NatWest, who also sponsored the project. NatWest gave the students £50 as an initial investment, and a business skills workshop during the spring term challenge.

The pupil’s amazing achievements were recognised at an awards ceremony on the evening of Thursday 17 May at the Hawth Theatre in Crawley.

The ceremony gave pupils from Hazelwick School, Thomas Bennett Community College, Oriel High and St Wilfrid’s School in Crawley, and

Tanbridge House School in Horsham the chance to showcase their fundraising ideas to a judging panel in a bid to win an award.

Pupils were also supported by family, friends and teachers, as well as his Worshipful, the Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Brian Quinn and Mayoress, Sue Quinn, councillors from Caterham, Oxted and Billingshurst, Trustees from St Catherine’s and senior NatWest staff.

Innovative presentations showcased varied fundraising ideas, including a live head shave via Facebook. Schools scooping an award on the night included: Hazelwick School - Most money raised, St Wilfrid’s School- Most pounds per pupil, Thomas Bennett Community College - Best presentation, de Stafford School (Team 1) - Most innovative fundraising idea Tanbridge House School - Digital Marketing Award.

John Redfern, Head of Corporate Banking (South East) at NatWest,

said: “This is the seventh year we’ve supported St Catherine’s Five-O Project. Each year, we’re completely blown away by the dedication and inventiveness of the students involved. They’ve worked really hard to raise as much money as possible for the hospice. For us to be able to share our professional knowledge to help them bring their ideas to life, and achieve their fundraising goals, is a privilege.”

Tom Abbott, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at St Catherine’s, said: “It was great to hear the fantastic ways our schools raised money for us. I hope they’re as proud of themselves as we are. Without our supporters, we wouldn’t be able to care for local terminally ill people when it’s needed most. I’d like to thank all our school teams, their teachers, parents, and NatWest mentors, for making this year’s Five-O Project the most successful yet!”

Schools could be quids in with energy offer West Sussex schools could get a cash boost by encouraging parents, carers and staff to switch to their local, council-backed energy supplier.

New customers signing up to buy their gas and electricity from Your Energy Sussex this summer can nominate a West Sussex school to receive a £20 donation from the supplier, when they switch. The school will receive £10 for a single fuel switch.

The offer is open to all residents in Sussex until 24 July, but the nominated school must be located in West Sussex.

Your Energy Sussex is a new, local energy supplier that was set up by West Sussex County Council to encourage households to switch and save money. Let Tom Wheelhouse from Mightify help you move on Business Eve Delves Tom Wheelhouse, Founder of Horsham coaching business Mightify, has used his experience as a former Metropolitan Police Officer to develop a resettlement course designed specifically for personnel from all areas of the Emergency Services sector.

The 999 Resettlement Programme, launching summer 2018, will provide a stepping stone for emergency services personnel wishing to transition back to civilian life.

Resigning from the Police Force in 2013, on the face of it, with his rigorous training and exceptional skills, Tom was the perfect candidate for any private sector employer.

However, experiencing the negative effects of long-term, high-stakes stress and burnout, Tom was

unable see it that way and instead thought himself unemployable.

When Tom realised his experience wasn’t a one-off, he’d turned his life around and was working successfully in the corporate world. He heard from other ex-Police Officers who on exiting the Force felt held back by lack of confidence and selfesteem. Like him previously, they didn’t know where to turn with little knowledge of how to present themselves in a professional way to employers and with a limited view of private sector employment.

Armed Forces leavers have numerous avenues open to them in the forms of advice, support and grants. There was and still is no such framework in place for those exiting the Police, Fire or NHS. Tom recognised his experience and expertise could be utilised to help others in the same or similar situations, and Mightify was born.

Mightify’s clients aren’t only from the emergency services sector, they’re from all areas of life and they all have individual needs.

professional life changes and others simply want to improve their physical health and fitness.

Tom’s burning ambition however, lies in making a real difference to the lives of ES personnel and his knowledge and experience give him necessary credibility and a unique selling point in a very overcrowded personal development market.

As attrition rates continue to rise within the emergency services, Tom believes that there’s never been a better time to launch Mightify’s Frontline Fulfilment Programme, aimed at assisting ES personnel through what can be a difficult and overwhelming time.

The aim of the course is to enable awareness within each individual of their extraordinary training, experiences and firstrate skill-sets; to imbue them with confidence and equip them with practical tools for happy, fulfilling and successful lives.

The fully accredited, two-day course will run regularly, initially in Sussex and Surrey with a view to going nationwide, and combine attendance and distance learning modules. Tom hopes to open doors to other higher learning or development pathways and is also keen to partner with employers who value the unique assets that such graduates can bring.

A summer schedule of local pop-up launch events is planned where Tom will team up with health, nutrition and business experts to showcase a taste of what the course will offer. Footballer hangs up his boots and puts on his tap shoes

Former Manchester City, Wrexham and Northern Ireland midfielder, Jim Whitley, has exchanged his football boots for tap shoes, as he prepares to premier a brand new comedy musical show set to hit The Capitol on Friday 29 June.

When injury cut short Jim’s football career, he jumped on the chance to get back to his love for music, and rekindle his previous experience as a singer. His love for swing music, The Rat Pack, and the Great American Song book, soon saw Jim become one of the UK’s most in demand crooners on the theatre circuit, and he jumped at the opportunity to pay homage to his crooner heroes, Sammy Davis Jr, Matt Monro and Bobby Darin.

Whitley said: “This is music from a time where men had style and charisma, and could sing, dance,

and joke like the best of them.

What a time for music.”

Crooner includes more than 20 all time classic crooner songs, such as Mr. Bojangles, L.O.V.E, Mac The Knife, and Beyond The Sea, and features one of the best modern big bands in the UK, The Mini Big Band.

Jim’s footballing feet have fared him well in his transition from football to theatre and he puts them to good practice in an extended Fred Astaire inspired tap dance routine feature.

Jim admitted: “I’ve always admired flair and showmanship of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, so I bought some tap shoes! Now, it’s the highlight of my night.”

Jim broke into the theatre world with his portrayal of Nat King Cole in the production of Christmas Crooners and Strictly Swing, before

joining the Rat Pack tour as Sammy Davis Jr, to critical acclaim. He is now excited to be part of this brand show that pays homage to music he loves, with one of the best touring big bands in the UK, and a quintessential injection of British comedy – tongue firmly in cheek.

“Nobody has done it like this”, Whitley explained, “We’re playing the music of all the greats, completely live, with an ace band, and throwing in some British comedy that’s had me rolling around in laughter. From The Jam comes to The Hawth The Jam had amazing chart success, with eighteen singles and seven albums to make the top forty in the United Kingdom, from their debut in 1977 to their break up in 1982.

The band’s last 5 albums were all top ten hits, and their last 8 singles made it into the top 10. From the Jam was a huge success at The Hawth previously, and returns this June led by The Jam’s original bassist, Bruce Foxton.

BRUCE FOXTON is a part of the English Rock and Roll establishment, most commonly recognised as the bass player in legendary bands The Jam and Stiff Little Fingers.

In The Jam, Bruce and drummer, Rick Buckler, were the driving force, power and rhythm section behind singer, guitarist, and songwriter Paul Weller. After The Jam split in ‘82, Foxton pursued a solo career. Horsham Sports Club are delighted to announce the return of The Big Gig, the town’s happiest live music festival – at Cricketfield Road this Saturday.

Hosted by none other than local comedian John O’sullivan this fantastic day out for all the family will feature iconic music from an outstanding collection of tribute bands. And, among super fun activities for children – accompanied under 10s getting in free - there will be bouncy inflatables, rides, glitter painting, and, for

everyone, superb food provided by well-loved favourites from Horsham Market. There will also be numerous specialist drinks tents featuring local ales, and a fully licensed bar, too. The music begins at 2pm with Flairz, reprising the very best of Glam Rock hits.

St Catherine’s is a dedicated provider of expert, high quality end of life care for terminally ill local people, assisiting them and their families and friends, free of charge, as they have done for nearly 40 years. Last year St Catherine’s cared for around 2000 people in their own homes, at the Day Hospice and on the wards.

Yet, they are currently only able to reach 1 in 3 people that need them and have recently launched the Full Circle Appeal to raise £20 Million for a new, state of the art hospice building to ensure that no one has to face death and loss alone. The excellent Cuckfieldbased Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity supports children under 5 years of age with cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties. Their early intervention scheme enables parents to maximise the potential of their child, through engagement, activity

play, physical therapy sessions, outreach support in the home and access to a parents network. Children also use assistive technology, and have a dedicated sensory room offering additional therapy sessions. Dame Vera’s Charity has helped more than 500 families from across the South East and relies on funding to continue and extend their services.

Horsham Sports Club Chairman Chris Wassell promises: “We’ve taken on board all of the feedback from the Big Gig 17, and to reduce festival go-ers queuing time there will be many extra toilet facilities and double the amount of bars. We’re really looking forward to using our generous outdoor space again for such a fun community event – Horsham’s very own music festival!”

Britain’s Got Talent star joins Comedy Beats’ latest show

Headline act, Stephen K Amos, can no longer make the upcoming comedy show, Comedy Beats, when it makes its return to the Holbrook Club, later this month.

The comic legend had to pull out owing to unforeseen circumstances, but organisers were quick to bring on board a home-grown talent, in the form of Robert White.

Mark Coxon, Comedy Beats creator, explained: “Comedy Beats return to the Holbrook Club on Friday the 22nd of June for our second show at this venue. We set the company up just under three years ago with the aim of bringing the very best acts from the UK comedy scene to venues in the South-East. I have been working as a comedian myself for more than twenty years and thought it was about time that somebody started to put on the quality of show that you would see in the very best comedy clubs in London. It seemed that we could save people the time and expense of travelling to London, not to mention the cost of drinks

in the West End! Originally, this show was going to have Stephen K Amos as the headline act, unfortunately he had to pull out last week due to unforeseen circumstances. When I heard this news the first call I made was to Robert White. We have been friends for a number of years and I knew, given that he was raised in Horsham and had come second a few days earlier in the final of Britain’s Got Talent, he would be the perfect replacement. I couldn’t believe my luck when he said yes, particularly considering how much his profile has increased as a result of his performances on BGT. Fortunately, we have Stephen on at another one of our shows in Crawley a couple of weeks later, so if anyone is really disappointed by him pulling out they will still have a chance to see him at one of our other gigs really soon.

I am really excited about having Robert down, particularly as he grew up in the town. In many ways, this will be a homecoming

gig for him, and I am really hoping the people of Horsham come out to welcome him back after his fantastic work on national television.

For anyone who didn’t see him on Britain’s Got Talent, he is not only a wonderful performer, but also unique musical act. He describes himself as the only gay, aspergic, quarter Welsh comedian on the circuit. I was doing a show with him in London last weekend and he absolutely stormed it. With Robert on the bill I know it will be a cracking show.

The opening act is Stefano Paolini. He is a fantastic impersonator, which is probably how he got the gig on Radio 4’s Dead Ringers, he also has the ability to human beat box. He was performing at a Comedy Beats gig in Copthorne about a week ago and he stole the show. His style is essentially storytelling, using his early experiences of growing up with Italian parents and living in south London.

After the first interval, Steve Best will take to the stage. He is a prop based act who has a great sense of silliness. He has been support act for the likes of Frank Skinner, Craig Charles and Omid Djalili to name but a few and has a reputation for quick fire gags.

will be weekend and after school rehearsals in November & December, followed by a run of 38 performances from 14 December 2018 until 6 January 2019 As part of the Ensemble, you would be expected to be available for all rehearsals and perfor-

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst relished their day at the coast, beaching Bognor with an excellent all round performance. Bognor put Billingshurst in, but were unable to make much headway as the first four batsmen all batted soundly – with thirties from openers Jake Cross and Tom Haynes (who has been selected for the Brighton Brunswick prestigious Spen Cama Foundation Lancashire tour later in the summer), 22 from the evergreen Scott Stratton and, especially memorably, an unbeaten 76 from Tim Weston, with 5 fours and 3 sixes.

After batting enterprisingly, Billingshurst had sufficient confidence in their bowlers to declare on 208-7, donating six extra overs to Bognor. The positive approach paid dividends when Andy Miller and Andy Barr made short work of the Bognor openers. The hosts recovered to 54-2 and then 72-

3, but then collapsed to 74-8, a last wicket stand of 20 produced a modicum of resistance, but Ben Williams’ 3-7 in seven miserly overs inflicted terminal damage, together with Barr’s 3-15. Ryan Maskell, returning to Bognor after a season with Horsham, made 42, Jamie Woolnough, batting at ten made 18 not out, overtaken by 23 extras. Speaking exclusively to the District Post, former Billi Captain Ben Williams said: “This was an enjoyable game for us – Jake and Tom created a platform for Tim Weston to build an innings and he batted impressively – the best knock we’ve seen from him - against Bognor’s useful bowling attack: their Bajan overseas Marquino Mindley is pretty slippery. The wicket wasn’t a minefield, but there was something in it for the bowlers and sides have to bat well against swing bowler Andy Miller and Andy Barr, who moves it off the pitch. Our whole team performed well and we’ve got more depth this season with players pushing for places. Other results went our way and we’re top by 15 points, which is great, but we’ve got another tough match on Saturday – at home against second-placed Mayfield, so we need to stay focused!”

Sunday June 10 - Sussex GrayNicholls T20 Cup – Round 2 Stirlands 100-6 (20 overs) Roffey 105-0 (6.4 overs) Roffey won by 10 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter The village of Birdham near Chichester is noted for its peace and tranquillity, but there is a bounty on Roffey Aussie overseas player Ben Manenti’s head after he slaughtered four of Stirland’s bowlers.

In an act of supreme optimism Stirlands decided to bat first and, although progress was slow, at 50-1 there was hope of posting

some sort of target. With Roffey in good form, what might have been needed to present a challenge is anybody’s guess, but it was definitely not 101. The top four batsmen laid reasonable foundations, but after Jamie Atkins and Alex Collins dismissed the openers, Svengali-like Manenti began his afternoon of torture with two quick wickets, a run out and a scalp for Rohit Jagota completing Stirland’s misery as they subsided to 100-6 off their 20 over ration. Emboldened by an apparent surfeit of red meat, Manenti then assumed the demeanour of Ned Kelly and Crocodile Dundee rolled into one and once he tasted blood he went

off like a rocket. Statistics don’t always tell the truth, but this time they certainly do – Manenti faced 30 balls, from which he hit 11 fours and 7 sixes (86 runs from 18 deliveries). He finished with an incredible 98 not out, Roffey storming home from a mere 6.4 overs. His opening partner Matt Davies is capable of scoring quickly along with the best, but wisely admired the view from the bowlers end, finishing on 6 not out from 11 balls. The Stirland bowlers will be waking screaming in the night for years to come – no names, but bowler number 1 went for 35 off three overs, number 2 had 22 taken from his 2 overs, number 3 really bore the brunt, his solitary over costing 33, while number four escaped with 15 off his four ball spell. After rueing the fact that he missed out on 5 dot balls Ben Manenti told us: “The team has been playing so well that I’ve been happy not to bat, but it was good to get some time in the middle. This is my third season at Roffey and they’ve been good to me – it’s great to be in such a successful side,” while skipper Matt Davies said: “We’ve had another great weekend – two big wins without losing a single wicket – we’re doing well, but there’s a long way to go, so it’s a case of ‘keep going lads’”.

In the Quarter Final on Sunday July 1st Roffey travel to Preston Nomads for a 3.30 start – on the same day East Grinstead play Horsham, Middleton host Eastbourne and Worthing entertain Hastings.

At Horsham on Sunday Cuckfield elected to bat. They got off to a flier with 28 off their first three overs, but when Tom Haines (2-21) bowled Aussie Big Bash’s Sam Whiteman, Cuckfield decelerated.

Whiteman can be devastatingly destructive but is currently suffering from a loss of form in the Sussex Premier League, followed by another low score against Horsham’s Thursday XI last week. Although Cuckfield reached 82-2, progress was contained and once Nick Oxley had dismissed Bradley Gayler for 46 the innings declined with a run out and two wickets for Joe Ashmore, who finished with 2-15 off his four over allocation.

On a customary good Horsham wicket a target of 132 was inviting, especially as Craig Gallagher is in a rich vein of runs and, with

Sussex opener Haines, youthful Tom Clark – fresh from two recent centuries, one as Captain of the Sussex Under 17 side and another against England Ladies – plus former Sussex and Leicestershire pro Michael Thornely, and MCC young cricketer Nick Oxley, Horsham have an enviably strong T20 batting line up, possibly to be further boosted by the county’s Will Beer. For Cuckfield, much depended on Sussex’s Abi Sakande, but he went wicketless at eight runs an over and although Haines departed for a golden duck that mattered not as Horsham were steaming along at 10 an over.

Although the pace slackened a little, from 99-2 off 12 overs they cruised home with 17 balls to spare. Clark made 33 and Thornely an unbeaten 27, but Craig Gallagher stole the show again, rounding off his excellent weekend with a typically belligerent 66 from 41 balls, featuring 10 trademark fours. Horsham skipper Thornely told the District Post: “Getting Whiteman out early was the key, then we restricted them well and got through our overs quickly. It was

a great wicket and a fast outfield, so they were about 40 light, then Tom Clark and Craig set the tone.

Craig just keeps going! And, its good to have Tom Clark back, looking fit and strong.” In the Quarter Final on Sunday July 1st, Horsham travel to East Grinstead.

Horsham tame unadventurous Brighton

With his batting maturing like fine wine, Craig Gallagher made a rapid 79, including 12 fours and three sixes.

17 year old fellow opener Rhys Beckwith batted painstakingly for 36, the pair putting on a century partnership. Michael Thorney (24), Nick Oxley (68) and Joe Ashmore with 41 then kept the momentum going and although the last four wickets fell for just 9 runs, Brighton skipper Simon Hetherton, ending with 4-64, a target of 274 was a testing, if not killer total. Brighton are second in the table courtesy of outstanding performances by Sussex’s Phil Salt and former county pro Matt Machan in the preceding five league 50 over win/lose games and, when Brighton replied, much depended on whether Salt and Machan could get the lion’s share of the runs again. After Mika Ekstrom (2-62) had dismissed both openers, Isaac Taylor for a first ball duck, Machan could only muster 14, PJ Williams catching him off Ashmore. But, Salt, with a recent 60 against the Aussies under his belt, plundered on, eventually fall-

ing for 94 with 14 fours and a six, again caught by Williams, this time off Oxley. With the score on 181-6.

Brighton kept going initially, but when their seventh wicket went down for 202 they shut up shop despite needing a relatively most 72 at a run a ball with Waheed Safi batting well. Horsham rang the changes but, mystifyingly, Brighton steadfastly blocked it out, despite the favourable conditions, Horsham Captain Michael Thornely asking: “When they’re trying to win the league, why didn’t they go for the runs?” Craig Gallagher added: “That was a very good wicket – the best of the season so far – we thought we might need 300.”

On Saturday, Horsham, now sixth, travel to the Saffrons to take on fouth in the table Eastbourne.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in last week’s league games, Eastbourne were at Middleton, where they bowled out the hosts for 208 despite wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat’s unbeaten century, then the visitors knocked off the runs to win by 6 wickets with almost 13 overs left. At Fulking Preston Nomads made 254-6 from their 58 overs with 90 from Dan Phillips, but the game ended as a draw with Cuckfield hanging on at 168-9. Navin Patel and Adam O’Brien each took 4 wickets but they were thwarted by an obdurate unbroken 15 run last wicket partnership. And, at their Saint Hill ground, East Grinstead conjured up another unlikely win after again being bowled out

cheaply – this time for just 135, James Pearce taking 6-67. Ifield had 64 overs to get the runs, but Lewis Hatchett with 4-38 from 18 consecutive overs, and everdependable Ian Sturmer with 6-33 then bowled out them out for 85, only two batsmen making double figures.

Roffey humble Hastings, extending lead at the top Saturday June 9 – Sussex Premier League Hastings & St Leonards Priory 105 all out (44.3 overs) – Roffey 108-0 (16.3) Roffey won 10 wickets – Roffey 30 points – Hastings nil Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter With Roffey’s Stuart Whittingham in the Scotland squad, and Luke Barnard still sidelined with a shoulder injury, Hastings decided to bat and started reasonably well, but disaster was lurking round the corner.

In the blink of an eye 51-1 became 62-5 – after dismissing both openers Alex Collins plucked out the hollow middle order before returning to take Hastings’ last wicket after Rohit Jagota had seen off batsmen 8 to 10 before the tea kettle had a chance to boil.

The first three Hastings batsmen – including last week’s centurian Joe Billings – made 58 between them, but only two others reached double figures, while their five remaining teammates amassed just 14, four victims departing LBW with ugly smears across the line. Although the bowling analyses were the stuff of nightmares for Hastings, they made happy reading for Roffey supporters – Collins 5-25, Jagota 3-18 and, as economical as ever, George Fleming nagging away with 2-38 from 18 overs. When is a tea not a tea? When Roffey are on song the mid innings tea is taken at lunchtime.

Resuming, Roffey had 65 overs at their disposal, but it took them just sixteen and a half to complete victory with both openers undefeated, 55 coming from Theo Rivers and 48 from Man of the Match Jagota. Together, the pair cracked 15 fours and 5 sixes, as if somebody had told them that their last bus was revving up outside the ground.

It would be cruel to print the Hastings bowling figures, so let’s just say that they were fast off the bat, not helped by their fielders spilling four catches, including two sitters in the outfield when Rivers and Jagota really went for their shots, Jagota trying to demolish a supporter’s green house with three sixes in a 22 run over. Roffey coach Simon Fearnley told the District Post: “Collo bowled an ideal length for that wicket and we caught well,” while Alex Collins said: “There was a little bit of movement, but I just bowled straight and let the ball do the rest.” Theo Rivers added: “It was great batting with Rohit again for another 100 partnership!”

In their previous home match Roffey bowled out Cuckfield for 103, also going on to win by 10 wickets, but they are definitely speeding up, the Hastings game finished at 4.10, including a leisurely tea interval - so the advice to spectators is: “Don’t be late.” On Saturday Roffey, top with 160 points, travel to the Nevill Sports Ground to take on current runners up Brighton & Hove (139).
