Plans for Horsham’s incinerator rejected On Tuesday (19 June) West Sussex County Council planning committee at County Hall in Chichester decided, in an 8 to 4 vote, to dismiss the planning application by haulage firm, Britaniacrest, to install a “Recycling, Recovery and Renewable” thermal treatment facility in Horsham*. No Incinerator 4 Horsham community group, along with concerned residents, were present at the meeting, and cheered on the vote, brought forward by Councillor Barnett-Miles and seconded by Councillor Barton. Norman Clarke of No Incinerator 4 Horsham, David Johnson, Chairman of CPRE Sussex and North Horsham parish council spoke in opposing to the application. Local WSCC councillor Peter Catchpole also spoke to oppose the applicant. No Incinerator 4 Horsham commented: “Democracy is alive and kicking. We have to thank the 8 WSCC councillors that read the documents, questioned the WSCC officer’s reports and that of the applicant having undertaken their own research to substantiate facts. These

councillors acknowledged the visual impact of such a massive industrial building and chimney; the HGV impact on the roads and homes transporting waste to the site from other counties; impact on public health; cumulative impact; concerns over decline in air quality; and that the over 5,500 residents oppose this application.” Prior to the planning meeting the community group had already (on 18 June), with the support of NGO UK WIN and Campaign to Protect Rural England Sussex, submitted a formal request to the Secretary for State of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to call-in this application, which will progress, as it is inevitable, after Tuesday’s decision, that Britaniacrest will go to appeal. “It is felt that this application for a massive industrial incinerator is not of a national or county interest. The incinerator would impact the 6 counties the developer seeks to source the waste from, and so does not meet the West Sussex County Council waste plan.” Continued on page 2.

Earlier this month a new Public Access Defibrillator was installed at business premises in Blatchford Road, Horsham. The defibrillator will help support the work of Horsham Community Responders who respond to incidents such as cardiac arrest and minor trauma. The installation was funded by local plastics manufacturer, Pentagon Plastics, and is based on the side of their building in the business park. This location pro-

vides easy access in an emergency and was officially activated on Saturday 2nd June. PAD launch In attendance at the launch was Hilary Humphrey from the Horsham Community Responders and Horsham MP Jeremy Quin. Paul Edwards, Pentagon Plastics MD stated, “We’ve always been a supporter in the community, working with football teams and charities, and when we learnt more about our local responders, we wanted

to help in any way we could. As our industrial estate has no existing defibrillators, we funded this installation with support from Lloyds Bank.” Local MP Jeremy Quin says, “This PAD site in Blatchford Road – Horsham Community Responders’ 21st – is great news. It makes our community safer, providing defibrillator kit which saves lives. Many congratulations to Horsham Community Responders – a small but very effective local charity – and to Pentagon Plastics for providing support.” The equipment is potentially lifesaving and having one on site improves a person’s chance of survival if they have a cardiac arrest. What is a defib? A defib will give a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall and is a life saving step once someone is in cardiac arrest. If you find someone in cardiac arrest, it’s important to call 999, start CPR, and check for a nearby defib. You can learn more about them from the British Heart Foundation, here. Continued from front page According to a statement from No Incinerator 4 Horsham, “This would mean that the 230,000 tonnes of waste will result in over 81,000 HGV journeys a year across West Sussex, East Sussex, Kent, Hampshire, London and Surrey, by virtue of the desire to build a large scale thermal treatment facility using moving grate technology to service the needs greater than the local area.” Britaniacrest Recycling Director, Chris Foss, said: “We are very disappointed that the planning committee members have not granted permission for this facility. This is in spite of the fact that the site is already operating as a waste management site, with no change in waste volumes or vehicle numbers being requested in the application. “Without this modernisation of the site, the recycling activity will continue outdoors, and waste will continue to be exported out of County and aboard [sic] which is truly disappointing. “We will now consider the situation and decide whether to proceed with an appeal against the decision, or just continue under the existing planning permissions.” *Application was submitted on 15 March 2018 - WSCC/015/18/NH. The previous application by the same company withdrawn was under application number WSCC/ 062/16/NH, which was recommended for refusal by the council officers.

Horsham Sports Club celebrates their success as The Big Gig reaches record numbers Horsham Sports Club was the place to be this weekend, as nearly three thousand of our party loving community gathered to celebrate Horsham’s family tribute music festival, The Big Gig ’18 on Saturday 16th June. Following on from last year’s success, the club took all feedback seriously and delivered a slick operation from start to finish. With a large team of generous volunteers, led by Mike Manktelow (Event Lead) Chris Wassell (Chairman), Dave Baxter (Musical Direction) and Chris Shambrook (Bar Manager) the team worked hard to exceed expectations resulting in a superb day out for the whole community. With outstanding performances from Flairz, A Touch Of Little Mix, Forever Jackson, The Blunter Brothers & Pure Queen, held together with an expert balance of humour, interaction and frivolity from compere and comedian John O’Sullivan, supporters were in high spirits and full of praise. Festival go-er Julie enthused “Fantastic day, well done all. Loved it last year and this year was even better! Excellent music, great atmosphere, yummy food, hilarious compere and small loo queues. So excited for next year already” Sensational street food filled the arena, children had the time of their lives enjoying the music, chasing the compere, and loving the inflatables and activities provided by Colin’s Amusements,

Horsham’s Day in Support of our Armed Forces and their families

Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion has once again joined with Horsham District Council to organise Horsham Armed Forces Sunday, which will take place between 10.30am and 2pm on Sunday 1 July in and around the Carfax, Horsham Town Centre. The event will feature static displays of historic military vehicles, thanks to the organisers of the Capel Military Show, a band parade followed by a ceremony, displays by local cadets from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as the Royal Naval Association and Horsham

Community Responders. The Royal British Legion Band will be providing further musical entertainment on the bandstand. At 11.15am there will be a parade of Royal British Legion Standards, veterans and local cadets, led by the Surrey and Sussex Drum and Bugle Corps, will march from East Street into the Carfax where there will be a ceremony at the War Memorial with addresses by Horsham District Council Chairman, Cllr Peter Burgess, and Royal British Legion Chairman, Nigel Caplin. SSDB Corps will then perform in front of the War Memorial.

The Carfax and East Street will be closed to traffic from 7am to 5pm, to facilitate this and the display of militaryvehicles. The event will close with the flag lowering ceremony at 2pm. The event will also highlight the role and work of Royal British Legion in supporting the ex-Armed Forces community and their families, with members of the Horsham Branch on hand to answer any questions. Chairman of the Council, Cllr Peter Burgess, said: “With the current focus on the commemorations of the end of World War One, now

is a great time for us all to be reaffirming our support for current, and past, service personnel and their families in our community. “I urge as many of you as possible to join with us on Sunday 1 July to take the opportunity to learn more about this aspect of the community and country in which we live, and make this a great day in support of our armed forces.” On 8 August, two representatives from the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion will take part in the Great Pilgrimage 90, the Legion’s biggest membership event in its history. The event

commemorates the pilgrimage of veterans and war widows who visited the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres, before marching to the Menin Gate in Ypres on 8 August 1928. Over 1150 Legion branches will take part in the parade to the Menin Gate, where a wreath from each branch will be placed on the memorial. The representatives from Horsham will be Standard Bearer, Jon Salmon, and Wreath Layer, Crawford Butler. A march past will then take place, observed by civic and military guests from the UK, Europe, and common-

Julia Donaldson visits Chestnut Tree House

On Tuesday 12 June, Julia Donaldson – author of an extensive range of children’s books, including The Gruffalo, Stick Man and Room on the Broom – spent the afternoon at Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, together with her husband, Dr Malcolm Donaldson. Julia and Malcolm, who are Patrons of Chestnut Tree House for 2018, treated a group of 20 children and family members to a unique storytelling experience in the hospice’s Woodland Walk. The talented pair recreated three family favourites: The Gruf-

falo, A Squash and a Squeeze, and Superworm, using promenade theatre to involve the children and make the most of the natural woodland setting. Some children and members of the hospice team also got involved, playing the different characters featured in the stories. In addition to the storytelling experience in the Woodland Walk, the children were encouraged to immerse themselves in Julia’s stories with a themed activity, organised by Chestnut Tree House Activities Coordinator, Estee Radford. Children were asked to use

their imagination and create, and name, their own monster, which they then showed Julia. Before leaving Chestnut Tree House, Julia spent time signing autographs and writing messages to the children, giving each of them one of her books to take away. One of the children, Fia, presented Julia and Malcolm with a special Gruffalo card, which was made by Chestnut Tree House to say thank you. Juliette MacPherson, Fundraising Development Manager at Chestnut Tree House, said: “Julia and Malcolm’s visit provided a truly magical afternoon for the children and families, and it was lovely to see so many smiles. Everyone loved the experience and really felt like they were involved in something special. “Moments are precious to all of us, but even more so when you have a child with a life-shortening condition. We are so grateful to Julia and Malcolm for helping these families to make some truly special memories.” Chestnut Tree House opened its doors on 11 November 2003 and currently provides care and support to around 300 children with life-shortening conditions, and their families, across Sussex and South East Hampshire – both at the hospice and in families’ own homes. The cost of providing this vital service is over £3.9 million per year, yet the hospice receives less than 6% central government funding, so relies heavily on the generosity and support of the community to continue providing vital care to children and families.

Mary had never driven a mobility scooter before. She is 94 years old and was seriously thinking of buying one, but wanted to be sure she would be safe on it and avoid accidents. In April, Mary was introduced to a scooter helpfully loaned, free of charge, for the duration of the sessions by Clearwell Mobility, and the seat was adjusted for her comfort. After a brief explanation and demonstration of the controls, Mary drove herself to a quiet area where her confidence grew, because she was able to practise turning, reversing and other manoeuvres, alongside her friendly ‘Scooter Tutor’. A few minutes later, accompanied by her Tutor, she crossed a road safely, and drove along pavements and paths, negotiating obstacles and allowing pedestrians the right of way at all times. She also made sure that the speed of the scooter was below the legal limit of 4 miles per hour. Mary said she was thrilled to have progressed so much in just a couple of hours, and was pleased to receive a certificate at the end. The Safety Sessions, which have been arranged jointly by Horsham District Older Peoples Forum and Horsham Town Community Partnership (HTCP), aim to help new and experienced scooter drivers remember that they share the pavement with pedestrians, who have right of way at all times. Anyone thinking about buying a scooter, or is already a scooter user, should enrol and then perhaps scooter riders will start to get a better name.” People in wheelchairs elicit understanding from passers-by, while mobility scooters can trigger irritation due to past incidents where, perhaps, the drivers did not show enough care. Yet, the scooter is a lifeline for many thousands of people, and the only way its owner can get to the shops and see friends. Tutor, David Searle, said that it was good to hear the more experienced drivers passing on their knowledge and experiences to others on the course. They also suggested improvements and changes. Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens host Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 networking event that would be available for all to enjoy once the house, lakes, and gardens, are opened to the public again in January 2019. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, also addressed the audience, saying he was delighted that Leonardslee had come on board to support the Year of Culture, which presented a great opportunity to celebrate the rich culture and heritage offer the Horsham District has. Representatives from Horsham based internationally renowned games-makers, Creative Assembly, gave a fascinating talk on

their links to the district, as well as how gaming fits into culture generally. Leonardslee will play host to the official launch of the Year of Culture 2019 on 1 January 2019 – more information will be available soon. Attendees were encouraged to let the Year of Culture team know if they still wanted to organise an event as part of the Year of Culture Fringe 2019, as this is still open to all. The aim is to hold more networking events as the Year of Culture approaches and unfolds.

Tour of the Bridge for Broadbridge Heath Parish Councillors Broadbridge Heath Parish Councillors had their firstlook at the construction of the new Bridge Leisure Centre, due to open later this year. The councillors were joined by Cabinet Member for Leisure & Culture, Councillor Jonathan Chowen, and Horsham District Councillor Director of Community Services, Adam Chalmers. Due to open this Autumn, the development is one of the Council’s most significant investments in years and will deliver one of the biggest public dry-side sports and leisure centres in the district, seeing a

major new facility built to replace the existing Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. The fantastic new facility will include a six court sports hall, an 80-station gym, a cycle studio, three fitness studios and five multi-use games areas. A new clip and climb facility and café, a sensory room, a treatment room for beauty and sports therapy sessions, and new changing facilities for indoor and outdoor activity, including a Changing Places disabled changing facility, will also be included.

Slimming World Andy charity ride success

Local Slimming World Consultant Andy Turner has just completed an epic cycle ride for charity raising money for the charity Brain Tumour Research. The ride saw Andy travel from London to Dover, then Calais to Bruges, then on to Breda and finally on to Amsterdam, covering almost 370 miles in 4 days. Andy, from Horsham, lost over 13 stone on Slimming World, and, at the start of this year, became a consultant, running his own group at St Leonards Church on Saturday mornings at 8am, and a recently added a 10am session. Commenting on his recent achievement, Andy said: “Since losing the weight, I have really

wanted to use all my new found energy to raise money for charity. “Last year I did the London to Brighton, but this ride was obviously a much bigger challenge!” Andy chose to ride for Brain Tumour Research due to a close friend having the illness: “It just seemed like an obvious thing to do, and hopefully the money raised will help fight this terrible disease”. So far, he has raised over £2300, beating his initial £2000 target, but he admits that he’d love to raise more. Andy says his weight loss with Slimming World has made such a change to his life: “Three years ago I would have struggled to ride 2 miles, so to do this is still unbelievable at times.

“I got quite emotional at the finish in Amsterdam; it suddenly hit home how much my life has changed”. Of course, one of those changes has been setting up his own Slimming World group: “I have loved getting the group going and helping people on their weight loss journeys. Slimming World is such a great plan, as it helps you lose weight, yet never go hungry, and it helps people make healthy changes for life”. His 8am session regularly has over 50 people coming along, and he hopes the newly created 10am session will have the same success: “We love to see new members. Just turn up at St Leonards Church at either 8 or 10am, any Saturday, and you will be more than welcome!” So is Andy going to have a rest from the charity rides now? “Initially, I said I’d leave it for a while, but I enjoyed it so much I am already looking to book another ride for next year and beyond”. Would you eat at a restaurant rated one star for hygiene? Choosing where to eat could be getting easier thanks to a new survey by West Sussex Trading Standards service. Everyone who eats out in West Sussex is encouraged to answer a few short questions about the food hygiene of local restaurants. These include: • Do you think that West Sussex food businesses should have to display their food hygiene rating? • Do you buy food from businesses that do not display their food hygiene ratings? • Is there a level of food hygiene rating that would affect your decision not to buy food from a business? Trading Standards and other members of the Sussex Food Liaison Group, made up from representatives from all of the local authorities in both East and West Sussex, will use the results of the survey to influence local businesses and encourage them both to display and improve their hygiene rating. Paul Hobbs, Chairman of the group, said: “When displayed, a food hygiene rating sticker provides consumers with at-aglance information about hygiene

standards in the food businesses within their council areas. “This enables them to make informed choices about where to eat. “We are in full support of this survey and we hope that we can use the results as evidence to encourage low scoring businesses to improving their rating and put it on display” West Sussex Trading Standards Manager, Peter Aston, said: “Food hygiene ratings can be a great help when deciding where to eat and buy food from. “Displaying a food hygiene rating benefits both the business and the consumers who eat there. “That’s why we’re encouraging everyone in West Sussex to complete this survey, which will, in turn, help us to encourage low scoring businesses to improve their rating.” Debbie Kennard, Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “Your opinions can make a big difference when it comes to influencing local businesses and helping to improve hygiene ratings. “So any time you can spare (to answer these short questions)

Local running club support Medical Detection Dogs charity Earlier this month, Mel’s Milers Running club presented the charity ‘Medical Detection Dogs’ with a cheque for £2905.65 at Bluecoats Leisure Centre, Christs Hospital. This was the money raised from their annual 10k race, held in March at Christs Hospital, as well as proceeds from a cake sale, and various raffles that took place during the past year. Medical Detection Dogs train dogs to become either biodetection dogs (dogs that use their amazing sense of smell to detect human diseases such as cancer) or Medical Alert Assitance Dogs. Most of the trained Medical Alert Assistance Dogs are placed with people with type 1 diabetes. Treacle (pictured) is one such Assitance Dog, who has been trained to detect minute changes in blood sugar levels. When these levels fall above or below ‘normal’ range, he will warn his owner by nudging her, tapping her with his paw, or making noises. To train a dog to Treacle’s standard can take up to two years, and costs £11,000. Medical Detection Dogs rely solely on donations; More than 80% of received funds go to research and dog training. Horsham library celebrates ‘Love Audio Week’

News Martin Read In the middle of June ‘Love Audio Week’ was co-ordinated by the Publishers Association, with audio book publishers from across the UK coming together to celebrate the extraordinary success of audio books, and to promote their best loved works. Although print format book sales in the UK have declined, purchases of audio book have doubled in the last five years, now accounting for 5% of consumer book spending in the UK. To celebrate Love Audio Week publisher WF Howes teamed up with HarperCollins and West Sussex libraries to put on a unique event, allowing library members the opportunity to hear all about audio production from the viewpoint of a bestselling author, narrator and technical expert. The large group of attendees were enthralled to participate in a question and answer session with Katerina Diamond, the prolific author

of electrifying thrillers such as The Secret, The Teacher and The Promise. Hailed as ‘the new queen of crime’ and ‘the master of gripping literature’, Sunday Times best seller Katerina, author of four hugely popular crime thrillers, has just completed her fifth book and is half way through her sixth, telling the audience: “I started writing 16 years ago and had a few failed attempts – until my first book was launched, fortunately to rave reviews. Although the writing time is relatively quick – it can be as little as five weeks - I spend a considerable amount of time before that on research.” Katerina’s dedication of The Secret reads: “For my husband, without whom I would think about murder a lot less”…… After Katerina had discussed her work, the group listened to professional narrator, award winning actress, Antonia Beamish reading extracts of one of Katerina’s books. Antonia narrates under the name of Stevie Lacey, and, having

lived in Africa, South America, France, New York and now residing in London she is a master of accents. Her acting CV includes theatre on Broadway and being cast as Rita in Educating Rita on a European tour. Author Katerina and narrator Antonia work closely together as a winning team, Antonia saying: “For me it is an honour to read Katerina’s books. But, we live some miles apart and the audio books are recorded in Leicester, so this is the first time that we have actually met - here in Horsham Library!” The audience was then given a demonstration of how audio books are produced, the average reading time being around three days with Antonia commenting: “Ipad and Kindle technology makes reading easier because it allows me to upsize and annotate.” Antonia then recorded some passages, with a sound engineer listening in and following the script, adding: ”I really enjoy creating a whole new world for listeners with Katerina’s writing carrying me along, accents coming naturally.” But, the engineer confirmed that audio book narrating is an art, quite a difficult job, then he explained how mistakes can be rectified – either through the system, or by re-reading. Members were given the opportunity to do a test recording themselves, following which copies of Katerina’s books were signed by the author and distributed. At the end of the most interesting session information was provided on how library members can download and install audio books – free – onto a mobile device.

West Sussex public buildings to get gigabit-capable broadband Public buildings in West Sussex are to benefit from the fastest and most reliable broadband connectivity as councils go ‘gigabit’. Thanks to collaboration between the county’s local authorities, supported by funding from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, gigabit-capable broadband services are to be built in key urban locations throughout West Sussex. The network will be built, owned and operated by CityFibre, the UK’s leading provider of wholesale full fibre infrastructure. With no reliance on copper wires, pure fibre networks are the next generation of digital infrastructure, capable of delivering unlimited speeds in both directions in excess of 1Gbps (1,000 Mbps). The councils are collectively future-proofing their digital connectivity to meet their public services’ future needs. The new network will provide fibre connectivity to key buildings, at locations including Bognor Regis, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Horsham, Littlehampton, Worthing and Shoreham. At the end of May, Bob Lanzer, County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, welcomed the contract with CityFibre to construct the network: “All of us are enthusiastic about driving forward full fibre connectivity. I am delighted that, in contracting with CityFibre, we

will have access to a bespoke optical fibre network that is designed, installed, supported and maintained for our public services. “By investing in full fibre infrastructure now, we are getting our buildings ready for the future, to benefit our public services, their users, and our residents.” The cutting-edge technology will ensure that the services and daily business of the county’s councils will be able to be more resilient, reliable, and at less risk of delay or disruption caused by poor or limited connectivity. Paul Brewer, Director for Digital & Resources at Adur and Worthing Councils, said: “Gigabit broadband has the potential to be a real game changer, which is why Adur and Worthing has been at the fore in bringing this exciting technology to West Sussex. “I’m delighted to see the consortium of West Sussex councils reach this stage. Once it is up and running, it will have a big impact on the delivery of our public services and, as a direct result, our communities as a whole.” The government’s ambition is to accelerate the deployment of full fibre across the UK, to remain globally competitive and position the country as a front-runner in the race to mobile 5G technology, which requires full fibre backhaul. Minister for Digital, Margot James, said: “Our programme will deliver a tremendous boost to broadband speeds for the councils of West Sussex, as part of our £190m full-fibre challenge fund. Initiatives like these are transforming the digital landscape of the UK, helping us to build a Britain that is fit for the future.” Rob Hamlin, Commercial Director at CityFibre, said: “We’re delighted to have been chosen to deliver the Government’s first ‘Local Full Fibre Networks Programme’ project. The LFFN provides a powerful mechanism for local authorities to attract full fibre infrastructure investment. We look forward to using this project with West Sussex as a model for roll-outs in towns and cities across the country.” The infrastructure will be built at sites managed by WSCC, and includes public sector buildings put forward by each District and Borough Council in: Bognor Regis, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Horsham, Littlehampton, Shoreham and Worthing. WSCC has stated that CityFibre is to begin building the full fibre infrastructure from August this year: “We expect that new services will start to become available in 2019, but it may be sooner.”

It’s different what I do and I’m lucky to enjoy a really exciting lifestyle, travelling to some spectacular places and it was heart-warming to be able to engage with them about it.” As a Red Bull Series World Cliff Diver, Blake jumps off high cliffs and other structures into water many metres below. At Beijing Blake was England’s youngest Olympian for half a century, partnering Tom Daley and took up cliff diving 7 years ago, saying: “I’ve been diving for 30 years and in 2017 I had my best year on the tour yet – I just love it!” The new Red Bull season opened with dives at the Hell’s Gate location in Texas and will shortly move on to the Basque city of Bilbao, where competitors launch themselves off the Salve Bridge over the Nervion river in front of the stunning Guggenheim Museum. San Miguel in the Azores is the next venue, followed by Sisikon at Switzerland’s Lake Uri. Then, it is on to Denmark, near the royal family’s Amalienborg Palace, Copenhagen, before going to the Old Bridge in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Mostar, and Polignano a Mare on the Adriatic. Among many other places around the world, motivational speaker Blake has also dived in Chile, Cuba and Australia. He has been a qualified coach for 20 years, having been Junior World Diving

Blake has picked up some serious injuries along the way, including detached retinas, isn’t it time to think of quitting while he’s ahead? Blake sums up: “Sure, I risk my life doing it, but cliff diving is a real passion for me – it ticks all of the boxes and really gets the fear, excitement and adrenaline pumping. One of the guys on the tour is 44 years old – quite a bit older than me - and is an absolute legend. I train hard and am fit, so I have no plans to stop any time soon!”

You launched your own business a year or so ago. You have met all your early objectives and things are going well. How do you stay on course and keep up the level of excitement and achievement? And what is the next step? BACK TO BASICS 12 months on is a good moment to take stock, but the key is do it regularly. Look at your initial objectives again. Remind yourself why you started your business. Compare where you are now with where you were 12 months ago. Are you still going in the direction you first planned or have things changed? DECISIONS TO TAKE If you have diverged from your original plan, should you modify it to take account of the way things have worked out, or should you put yourself back on track? You may have discovered that your original vision, the dream, is not feasible in practice. For example, you may have trained as a car mechanic and set up a business to service your favourite cars, MG’s. However, in the course of the year people have asked you to service other cars and rather than

turn away any business at this early stage, you have taken on the work. The result is that though you have plenty of work, and you enjoy it, not much of it is on MG’s. Does this bother you? Should you make a determined effort to return to your plan of servicing only MG’s? Or should you alter course and service any cars? It’s important to take stock and make a positive decision one way or the other. There is nothing wrong with altering your original plan, but you want to avoid just allowing yourself to drift into a new direction without acknowledging it. Why? Well, if you let things drift you may find yourself getting sucked into a situation where the business has taken you over and you aren’t in control. Reassess where you are to avoid chaos. Either recognise that servicing any car suits you fine and rework your business plan an that premise, or fight the currents pulling you that way and return to the goal of servicing just MGs. WORKING ON THE BUSINESS One year on is also a good point to assess how much you are putting into, and how much you are getting out of, the enterprise. Are you working all hours in your business when what you really should be doing is spending some time working on your business? Being fully involved in the day to day business operations sometimes means that

you are too close to it and therefore, not as objective about decisions as you should be. This weekend (Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 June), *Amberley Museum will be hosting their annual Emergency Services Weekend, to celebrate and showcase the emergency services, providing an opportunity for visitors to meet members of the emergency service crew and have a close look at historic, and modern, response vehicles. The show this year is fully supported by the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, who hope to

bring their new ALP from Worthing, along with the Technical Rescue Unit from Horley. With three stations attending over the two days (subject to operation commitments), visitors will be able to witness rescue displays on cars up in the Museums white pit by the Paviors exhibit. The historic preserved Fire Service appliances will be on static display around the Museum, along with a presence from the RNLI, Police vehicles, RAF

Colgate Village Fete and Family Festival

Gates open at 1 o’clock Entertainment Dave Elder The annual Colgate Summer Fete is held in the grounds of the village Memorial Hall at the junction of Forest Road and Blackhouse Road and has a history going back over 100 years. The story of our village fete is tied in closely with the village school and prior to the fete being held at the hall, it was for some time held at the nearby mansion of Coombe Wood, who opened up their grounds once a year for the

village to hold its school sports day and fete. Our village fete is still a ‘real’ village fete, with all the traditional stalls and fun events that you would expect, but this year we are moving into the 21st century and renaming it the Family Festival. This is to demonstrate the focus that we always try to achieve in providing a fantastic event for all the families and residents of the village and local areas. You will find that it always has that special village atmosphere with the village hall committee and many local residents running stalls and helping out on the day.

auction! To cap it all, refreshments will include cream teas, ice creams and of course a BBQ for all those with a healthy appetite! The fete will be officially opened at 13:30 by Ruth Calvert from the local Holmbush Estate. Events during the afternoon start at 14:00 with a fancy dress competition for the young children and prizes will be judged on their home made costumes. All in all, we can promise you a busy and fun afternoon for the whole family. The current village hall was opened in 1953 as a temporary measure to replace the original building that was bombed during the second world war, and has done exceedingly well considering that it has so far lasted for some 65 years, but it is our vision and our aim to replace this with a new, more permanent structure that will continue to provide our ever-growing community with facilities that they need for generations to come. In 2016, he took a podium result in only his second competitive British GT appearance at Rockingham Motor Speedway, before sensationally breaking his race wins duck on hallowed ground at Belgium’s Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Because of his on-track achievements, Reed was granted access to the most prominent and exclusive organisation in world motorsport – the British Racing Drivers’ Club, when he was selected as a BRDC Rising Star. for the 2017 British GT4 title and duly delivered one race win and three podium finishes to keep his championship hopes alive until the final round of the season at Donington Park, where his bid was struck by misfortune. There are some very exciting opportunities and some new plans for Team HARD’s GT operation for the coming years, with Alex on-board.” At the age of 12 Alex entered his first series of club races at the 800m circuit in Albourne in restricted karts, finishing second on his first ever race day. He soon took lessons and at 14 he learned to drive a Lotus Exige and had further tuition at Brands Hatch, going on to race at iconic venues at Snetterton, Donington and Rockingham Race Circuit. Although he has only been racing a relatively short time Alex’s results have shown great promise and many knowledgeable independent observers have made favourable comments on his level of skill and ability to learn quickly and adapt to new tracks and surroundings with great speed. Alex’s long term ambition is to drive professionally at Le Mans – he is aiming high and looking forward to exciting times ahead and is definitely one to watch

Tom Johnson flays Pagham with thunderous 205 not out Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last Saturday spectators at Cricketfield Road were treated to an exceptionally belligerent display of life-threatening batting by Horsham’s Tom Johnson. Coming in with the score on 52-1 Tom smashed an unbeaten 205 off just 86 balls with 22 fours and 15 sixes – including a phenomenal six in an over - for Horsham 2nd XI against shell-shocked Pagham, enabling skipper Omkar Khot to declare on 332-2 from only 35 overs. Johnson joins an exclusive club, very few cricketers having hit every ball of an over for six – Garry Sobers memorably doing so at Swansea 50 years ago, a feat since replicated by other greats of the professional game, including Herschelle Gibbs of South Africa, Ravi Shastri and Yuvraj Singh of India and West Indian Keith Pollard. At club level, six sixes in an over is almost unheard of, and while everyone admired the achievement, Pagham wondered why such a prolific player was pitched against them. not in the best of form, so I had a net, changed my stance and went for it .They put the fielders out, but there were no fielders in the tennis courts, so I decided to try to clear the ropes.” Jonny Whiting, also a stalwart of Horsham’s rugby team – coming back from injury for his first cricket of the season – added: “The six sixes in an over were all massive straight hits and the last one sailed right over the tennis courts – it was unbelievable!” It was a good game for the side’s rugby players – Whiting taking 6-26, condemning Pagham to a 249 run defeat – and earlier Sam Bell had made 76 opening the batting for Horsham. Johnson’s assault resulted in horrendous bowling analyses, the worst reading 3-0-57-0. Yet, the bowlers were not the only casualty – Horsham umpire Paul Baker had to retire with exhaustion to act as scorer for the remainder of the game after having had to raise his arms so many times to signal sixes. Fortunately, a tennis coaching session was just finishing as Tom Johnson’s battery began, Club Tennis Coach Glyn Jukes saying: “A couple of the juniors got very excited and were very enthusiastic about such prodigious hitting!”

Billingshurst hold Mayfield to a hard fought draw Saturday June 16 - Sussex League Division 2 Mayfield 186-9 declared (52.1 overs) Billingshurst 150-8 (47 overs) Match drawn - Billingshurst 10 points – Mayfield 12 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Jubilee Fields, Mayfield elected to bat, and after a promising opening stand, lost wickets at regular intervals - despite a succession of batsmen getting off to good starts - Ben Williams and skipper Tom Haynes chipping away the middle and lower order after Andy Barr and Jamie Piper had dismissed the openers. Enjoying another productive season, the prolific Williams took 4-60 off 18.1 overs, while Haynes finished with 2-12. Mayfield declared on 186-9, denying Billingshurst the opportunity to earn another bowling point. Replying, depleted Billingshurst started well, with a first wicket partnership of 50, of which Jake Cross made 30, but, the next four batsmen came and went quickly and at 119-6, the distinct possibility of defeat beckoned, but, with Haynes shepherd-

ing the tail, Billingshurst successfully achieved an honourable draw, Ben Williams telling the District Post: “This was a good, challenging game of cricket against a strong, competitive side – we bowled well and they batted well, so it was a good contest. Their Captain, Jason Finch, is a quality bat - and Nisal Francisco is their danger man, as his recent big 100 confirms, so we did well to get both of them out cheaply. We were without batsmen Stuart Barber, Tim Weston and all rounder Louis Storey, but Tom Haynes is one of the very best bats in the league, as he showed again, batting through to end up 67 not out. I’m really pleased with the way I’ve been bowling this season, and think I know my own game now. I’m feeling confident that with our best side out Billingshurst are capable of beating any team in the league.” In the tightly bunched top of the table Haywards Heath are now leaders, Three Bridges second and Billingshurst third, with just two points separating the three of them. This Saturday Billingshurst visit former Premier League side Chichester Priory Park. After losing to Three Bridges last week, Chichester are seventh.

Former Kent pro James Hockley has been in the runs for Eastbourne, but was impressively caught behind by Michael Harms, low to his right off Sussex’s George Garton. Tom Haines accounted for the other opener – Daniel Arms, but Eastbourne skipper Jacob Smith batted on for 106 with 14 fours, and Ben Twine made 60, both being dismissed by Nick Oxley, whose overhead catch running away from the wicket was a fielding highlight after others had

dropped four catches, fortunately not too expensively. When Arms and Twine were batting together a big score looked likely, but Horsham did well to restrict the target to 265 by containing Eastbourne in the latter stages of their innings, Oxley finishing with 3-44 and Will Beer 2-46. As there were no terrors in the wicket and the outfield was fast, at the half way stage Horsham were confident that they could mount a successful chase, whereas, for the same reasons, Eastbourne rued missed opportunities. Craig Gallagher got Horsham’s response off to a quick start with a 16 ball 24 containing 4 fours and a six. When he was out and Beer had departed LBW Horsham were 73-2, Haines, though was batting purposefully, first with skipper Michael Thornely (25), who clubbed a six into the adjacent football ground, and then with Oxley. By the time Oxley was out for 57 after flailing a ball one-handed four onto the distant road, only 11 more runs were needed. Haines finished with 120 not out at less than a run a ball, courtesy of two towering sixes and 19 imperiously driven fours, ensuring that there were no further alarms, Horsham winning with 11 overs unused. Michael Thornely told the District Post: “We clawed it back well – we thought they’d get over 300. Then Tom batted brilliantly to give us a great win.” Nick Oxley said: “The ball was nipping about a bit so I batted quite a long way out of my crease to nullify that”, while Tom Haines added: “They should have got more runs,

but their innings fizzled out in the last ten overs. It was a slow wicket, but they bowled quite well – it was swinging, so we just had to wait for the bad ball and make sure that we put it away, as Craig did to launch our innings.” The win secures Horsham’s fifth place with 125 points. Hastings are bottom with 69, below Cuckfield and Ifield, both on 76. On Saturday Horsham are on the road again – to Middleton on Sea. Despite having some of the best facilities in the league 7th in the table Middleton have been struggling– although, creditably, they previously walloped reigning champions East Grinstead. Middleton’s batting is fragile and they have been bowled out cheaply by Roffey, Brighton and Preston Nomads, losing those matches heavily as a result, but last week they posted 226-8 off their 58 over ration, Mahesh Rawat finishing on 105 not out – his second consecutive century - before Cuckfield (surprisingly 8th) were bowled out for 97, Craig Fowle taking 4-16. Cuckfield are suffering problems with availability. All five Premier League matches ended with positive results, with all five home sides losing. At Horntye Park, Hastings were shot out by East Grinstead for 84, Lewis Hatchett taking 6-52 and Ian Sturmer 3-23, Grinstead winning by 10 wickets in 19.1 overs. While Ifield could only muster 93, two players notched up 30s, but extras was the next highest contributor with 10, the remaining 9 batsmen producing 19 runs between them, Preston Nomads winning by 7 wickets.

Brighton have title pretensions and with Sussex batsmen Luke Wells and Phil Salt, together with former county pro Matt Machan in their line up, at least a hundred more runs were felt to be needed. Theo Rivers was again batting well, and with Roffey skipper Matt Davies (51), he put on 91 for the sixth wicket and, when Rivers was eventually out for a classy 121, Davies added more valuable runs with Paul Harrison for Roffey to finish on 254-8 from their 58 over allocation. Brighton’s batting relies heavily on their big guns, but Ben Manenti enticed Wells down the wicket to be stumped by Davies before Alex Collins trapped Salt LBW, both departing with 20s. When Manenti also accounted for Machan, Brighton were exposed, tumbling from 79-2 to 113-8 with three quick wickets from Rivers’ leg breaks. After several of us played abroad during the winter we’ve matured as a team and Ben bowled beautifully again.” Roffey Coach Simon Fearnley told us: “This was a good game for neutral observers, the first time this season that we’ve really been under strain. There was something in the wicket for bowlers and Wells bowled impressively, varying his pace, so Theo’s innings was fantastic – he has worked so hard to achieve the hundred that he’s been promising for a while. And, Davo produced a great innings under duress when we were in a precarious position, particularly considering that it is the first time that he’s had to bat on a Saturday for some while.” Roffey now top the table with 190 points, 27 clear of East Grinstead. Brighton are third with 146. This Saturday Roffey return home to welcome sixth placed Eastbourne, then on Sunday they have a big game in the National KO Cup at Blackheath, who currently head the Kent League by 15 points. Blackheath won the National Cup in 2015, but, at their Crawley Road ground, Roffey eliminated them in Round 3 of the competition last season with a comfortable win.

Southwater Royals FC held their annual family presentation day last weekend which included a six a side World Cup tournament for the junior players. Southwater Royals FC are a Standard Chartered Club based in Southwater with over 150 registered players ranging from U6 to the Senior Team. The 7 hour, fun festival of football took place in glorious

sunshine which brought families and the local community together. The Senior Royals players even managed the younger Royals teams on the day in their various age groups. Throughout the day each age group had their own team presentations for players of the season with every child given a trophy for playing for the club. Hundreds of people attended the family day

which had Bouncy Castles, lots of stalls, BBQ and an ice cream van, taking over Southwater Village Leisure Centre in Pevensey Road all day. Andy New the Southwater Royals Chairman commented “This is always the highlight of our calendar year and to see and feel the community spirit and the joy on the faces of all the players is fantastic and is what this football

club stands for. Our Senior players have even given up their spare time to come and manage the boys today which is a tremendous gesture.
