Broadbridge Heath Village Fete huge success after 18 year break! On Saturday (23 June) the sun beat down on Broadbridge Heath Common - lovingly referred to as ‘The Ducky’ by locals! - at the much anticipated return of the Broadbridge Heath Village Fete. The event, which drew a larger crowd than anyone had expected, was the result of months of preparation by the Broadbridge Heath Gala Association, who explained: “Back in September 2017, Broadbridge Heath Gala Association held an EGM (Emergency General Meeting) to discuss the future of the association due to a lack of members after having been so successful for many years. Luckily, a few new local people turned up to save the association and started planning events straight away. In December, we brought back the once popular Santa Sleigh Procession which saw Santa being pulled around the whole Village on his sleigh. The turnout was incredible, we raised over £800 in just a couple of hours, so that’s when we knew we needed to invest our time and effort into Village events. We put on an Easter Trail throughout the village, again the villagers loved it! So on to the Summer Fete!

The Fete saw fairground rides, giant inflatable slide and bouncy castles, face painting, walking pet balloons, charity stalls, make up, skin care, arts, crafts, holistic healing, Fishers Farm, along with the traditional Welly wanging, coconut shy and stocks. We also had a bar serving local real ales, Pimms and Prosecco, Pizza from Pizza Craft, Fish and Chips from McSmiths, BBQ from Broadbridge Heath FC plus an ice cream van. Lots of the Local groups got involved too including; FOSS (Friends of Shelley School), Sea Cadets, Kinderoos, Skylarks, Indoor Bowls, Scouts and Guides, Stoolball and not forgetting the wonderful WI. The arena was packed from Peppa Pig at the start, Unicorn Academy from Crazy Beans, Horsham Bluebelles baton twirlers, Kung Fu School, Rhythm and Sole Street Dance, Broadbridge Heath Ceroc and finishing with a Tug o’ war! Our raffle stall was busy, with prizes being donated by local businesses including Wings & Wheels, The Capitol Horsham, One Stop, Barnetts Barbers, Shelley Arms, Moores Pest Control and more!

A number of young students taking part in West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s FireBreak programme have graduated after completing a week of training at Crawley Fire Station. A Pass Out Parade took place at the station on the afternoon of June 22, with an audience of family, friends, and instructors, watching the 11 graduates take part. The students, aged between

12 and 14 (years eight and nine), participated in a range of drills, including hose running, ladder climbs, and wearing breathing apparatus. They also learnt various skills, including CPR and fire safety, and have gained a HeartStart qualification. Richard Poole, lead instructor, said: “It’s been a full on week, with a great deal of teamwork, pride, and passion to successfully achieve two impressive Pass Out

drills, where the young people have pulled out all the stops to complete this training. “They should be proud of what they have achieved.â€? Chief Fire Officer Gavin Watts, who presented the young people with their awards, said: “It is always good to see the young graduates learn about the challenges our firefighters face, and I hope this week has helped them to gain valuable skills such as discipline, teamwork, and improving self-confidence. “I hope there are some positive things they can take away from this experience, and I want to thank the instructors and everyone who makes these events happen.â€? The students attend the following Horsham District schools: • Tanbridge House School, • Forest School, Horsham • The Weald School, Billingshurst West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is at the heart of West Sussex County Council’s Communities and Public Protection Directorate, working to support communities to become safer, stronger and more resilient through a combination of prevention, protection and response activities.

With the temperatures rising, please be aware that all dogs can easily overheat, in particular brachycephalic breeds as listed below! Warning signs to look for: đ&#x;”šExcessive or loud panting đ&#x;”šExtreme thirst đ&#x;”šThick saliva đ&#x;”šVomiting đ&#x;”šIncreased heart rate đ&#x;”šBright red tongue & pale gums To prevent your dog from over heating, walk your dog during the cooler hours (early morning or evening) & on soft ground rather than pavement to protect their paw pads. It is also suggested that using frozen ice packs or frozen water to cool your dog down can have the opposite effect, therefore cool water is sufficient. âš ď¸?Rememberâš ď¸? - dogs don’t sweat like humans & have to pant & sweat through their paws to cool down making it much more difficult for them!

Shelley’s night club makes way for live music venue,‘The Rec Rooms’

While attention for many may have been focused on The Big Gig at the Horsham Sports Club last Saturday night, elsewhere in Horsham over a hundred people witnessed the birth of a fantastic new music and comedy venue at The Rec Rooms in the space mostly known as Shelley’s night club. Introduced by the venue’s new local operators, Stuart, Nick and Graham, impeccable tribute act, The Rollin Stoned, delivered a high energy set packed with hits over two and a bit hours. As an opening act for the venue there can be little doubt that it was an inspired choice given the joyous reaction of the assembled audience who increasingly took to the dance floor as the evening

wore on. Any review of this gig would be disingenuous not to highlight the

We have been so excited to share our vision for the venue with the public and what a great reception we’ve had humour that the band brought to their performance throughout and escalated with the appearance of a ‘Brian Jones’, hilariously clad in cloak and angel wings,

who joined the band following a plaintive rendition of the ‘Stones classic ‘Angel’. The Rec Rooms team had been working solidly for the last two months having redecorated, refurbished and adding music memorabilia to get the venue ready for the night and they were justifiably elated with the result. Speaking for the REC Rooms team, Graham Kempster said, “We have been so excited to share our vision for the venue with the public and what a great reception we’ve had. The town of Horsham can now be proud that it has a dedicated live music venue and this is just the first of many great nights we have planned for The REC Rooms”. A large group of friends from

Sensor camera captures Horsham burglary suspects

Horsham Folk Club enjoyed the evening greatly too with well known local musician Dick Streeter saying, “This is just the type of venue that many artists and bands love to play and I think it’s going to be a great bonus for the community.” With its own bar and a capacity for up to 300 people The REC Rooms have been transformed into a really decent adult orientated venue that looks set to become a popular part of Horsham’s appeal for those looking for a great evening out. Look out for announcements of the latest venue bookings over the next few months as well as exciting news about the Bowling Alley above which The REC team have also been busily upgrading.

The REC Rooms building is owned by Horsham District Council who are delighted with strides being made by its new tenants to bring it into more beneficial use. The work being put in to transform the bowling alley and its rooms underneath is a major step forward for the town on many levels. It is in a key location, at the connection of the park with the town and with a growing community it is important that we have a wide choice of sporting and entertainment facilities. The plans the REC Rooms team have are exciting and will return the site to being at the heart of the local community and a major attraction for visitors to the town.

Free event to offer post-16 advice for young people with special needs Following its success in January, a free event for teenagers over the age of 14 with special educational needs or disabilities, is returning to West Sussex in July. The ‘First Steps to Adulthood’ event is also open to parents, carers and support providers who are looking for advice on helping teenagers transition from school into post-16 life. The event will house more than 30 stands offering advice on supporting young people into paid employment, benefits, keeping safe, leisure activities, the West Sussex Compass discount card, specific disability organisations, the West Sussex Local Offer, short breaks and lots more, and will take place on 4 July in Crawley. Organised by West Sussex County Council and the West Sussex Parent Carer Forum, the event is designed to provide young people with fundamental lifestyle knowledge in preparation for leaving full-time education. Richard Burrett, County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “We have already held similar events in Chichester, Horsham and Worthing which have been really successful. More than 140 people attended our last event in January. “Some teenagers, parents

and carers may be feeling quite overwhelmed as they begin to consider leaving school, whereas others may just need to plug a few gaps in their knowledge. Either way, this event offers people the opportunity to ask questions and get open, honest and realistic answers. “We are very pleased to be jointly hosting this with the West Sussex Parent Carer Forum whose organisers are invaluable in the support they offer people across the county.” In addition, two workshops will be run at the event: The first will be looking at employment skills and getting a job, and will be run by the DWP Job Centre Plus, and the second will focus on community safety. Following the event in Chichester, feedback from parents and carers was positive: “very informative and nice to have the opportunity to ask questions”, “I have found so many useful contacts and info I never knew existed.” Booking is not required for the First Steps to Adulthood Information Event, which will take place from 6pm to 8pm at Eat Central Café at Crawley College, in College Road. Council-backed energy supplier goes from strength to strength

A council-supported energy supplier has already helped more than 1,000 households to switch to a cheaper energy tariff, and save money, in just four months since its launch. Councils in Sussex launched Your Energy Sussex in February 2018 to encourage more people in the county to become regular energy switchers. Figures from Ofgem (1) show that only 25% of households compared their energy costs and switched supplier in the past year - and households could save as much as £300 per year, on average, by switching.Your Energy Sussex, which is led by West Sussex County Council and supported by East Sussex County Council, Brighton & Hove City Council and district, and boroughs from across the county, offers consistently-competitive prices for gas and electricity, excellent customer service, and works hard to keep customers on its best available energy tariff. It is run on a not-for-profit basis and uses any surplus it generates to support residents who are struggling to pay their energy bills. Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex

County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “The recent energy price rises announced by the ‘Big 6’ suppliers have shown how important it is to keep an eye on what you’re paying for your gas and electricity, and switch if a better tariff is available. “With Your Energy Sussex we’ve made a really good start in encouraging people across the county to become regular switchers and save money. We will continue to work hard with our partner authorities to increase our customer base in the coming months and, over time, fund initiatives to help our residents facing fuel poverty.” Nick Bennett, East Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said: “Your Energy Sussex encourages people to shop around for lower gas and electricity tariffs, which helps to cut households bills. We are really pleased that many people have already been encouraged to do this and to save money. The recent energy price rises announced by the ‘Big 6’ suppliers makes it even more important to shop around, and we look forward to continuing to work with our partners across

Sussex to encourage more people to switch and save.” Anne Meadows, Chair of Brighton & Hove City Council’s Housing and New Homes Committee, said: “Many people struggle to meet the costs of keeping their home warm, and comparing tariffs offered by different energy suppliers can help people to get a better deal and reduce their energy bills. It’s great to see Your Energy Sussex is helping residents to switch.” Your Energy Sussex is currently running a campaign for West Sussex schools to encourage parents and carers to switch. Each new customer can nominate a school to receive a donation. The chosen school will receive £10 for a single fuel switch (gas or electricity) and £20 for a dual fuel switch (gas and electricity). The offer, which is available to schools in West Sussex only, closes on 24 July (the last day of the school summer term). Details are available at www.yourenergysussex.org.uk/schools. 1. The most recent Ofgem consumer survey revealed that only 25% of people changed their energy tariff or supplier in the last year and a significant percentage of customers who have not switched will be on the most expensive ‘standard variable’ tariffs. Your Energy Sussex is a partnership between Sussex councils and Robin Hood Energy, the licensed energy company owned and operated by Nottingham City Council.

Active 10 app helps adults get active this summer

Just 10 minutes of brisk walking a day can make a huge difference to your health. Now West Sussex County Council and Public Health England are urging all adults to make the most of the summer weather and find 10 minutes a day to improve their health. Walking briskly for 10 minutes a day can make a huge difference to your health, both in the short and long term – it gets the heart pumping faster, can make you feel better, more energetic, and improve your mood. Over time, brisk walking can help to lower the risk of serious illnesses, like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It’s for these reasons that healthcare professionals

are recommending high intensity physical activity, like brisk walking, in order to improve their patients’ health. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, Amanda Jupp, said: “Summer is the perfect time of year to spend a little more time outside and to be more active, although the busy nature of modern life means that it is often difficult to fit physical activity into the day. “However, the good news is that brisk walking counts as a form of intense physical activity. So whether you are walking to work or the shops, stepping out

at lunch time, taking the dog for a walk around the local park, or enjoying one of the many footpaths we have in the county, there are many ways you can fit 10 minutes of brisk walking into your day.” Brisk walking is simply walking faster than usual, at a pace that gets your heart pumping faster and makes you feel slightly out of breath. Research shows that rather than the number of steps taken, or distance walked, it’s the combination of the intensity of the activity, and how long you’re doing it for, that leads to health benefits. To help you on a journey to a healthier you, Public Health England is encouraging adults to download the free Active 10 app, to help complete your 10 minutes of brisk walking daily, and to gradually build this up to multiple Active 10s. The app is the first of its kind to show how much brisk walking you’re doing and when you are doing this at a high enough intensity, and long enough, to get health benefits. So, this summer, why not join the 600,000 people who have downloaded the Active 10 app so far and get walking to a healthier you? Visit http://po.st/Active10_ West_Sussex to find out more and to download the app.

The Horsham Symphony Orchestra, under their principal conductor, Steve Dummer, and guest leader, Anna Giddey, opens its summer concert at the Capitol with a performance of Mendelssohn’s ever popular Hebrides Overture, “Fingal’s Cave”. London’s first orphanage and school, Christ’s Hospital, in new exhibit at the Museum of London

The Museum of London will host a new display, Bluecoats in the City, looking at the impact and story behind The City of London’s first orphanage and school, Christ’s Hospital. Founded in 1552, Christ’s Hospital transformed the site of a former monastery into a sanctuary for the City of London’s orphaned and impoverished children, offering food, lodging and an education. Since opening, Christ’s Hospital has now educated, lodged, fed and clothed more than 45,000 chil-

dren, thanks to donations from the City of London and charitable benefactors. In 1902, the school moved from the City to Horsham. However its strong bonds to The City of London remain. The Museum of London’s new display, Bluecoats in the City, allows visitors a chance to discover a school like no other; Delving into the history behind the School’s creation, its iconic historic uniforms and traditional practices, alumni and centurieslong relationship with London. Curator, Hazel Forsyth, said: “As the City’s first orphanage and School, Christ Hospital played a very significant role in London’s history. Built to create a future for London’s most disadvantaged children, the school has gone on to educate and lodge over 45,000 through the generosity of the City of London and countless benefactors. “This display celebrates that unique relationship and offers a look behind 350 years of history, with loan items from Christ’s Hospital, and stories about some of its distinguished and influential pupils.’ Christ’s Hospital Museum Curator, Laura Kidner, said: “Bluecoats in the City explores the extraordinary and diverse history of one of the oldest schools in England. Over 30 intriguing objects present a thematic display, bringing to life our early London roots, over three centuries, before the School moved to Horsham, West Sussex, in 1902, where it continues its original mission as the leading charitable boarding school for bursaries, and as a pioneer of social mobility in Britain today. Of our 890 pupils, 75% receive a free or fee-assisted boarding place.” Bluecoats in the City, Museum of London, 12 July - 7 October

Early Years success for Collyer’s and Wakoos

Collyer’s Early Years in Education (EYE) have been celebrating an excellent working partnership with Wakoos Nursery in Billingshurst. Head of Early Years Education at Collyer’s, Debbie Mollart, visited Wakoos and met up with her former students Jade Orosz (Manager), Katie Durrant and Bethany Morris. Debbie, who taught and assessed Jade, Katie and Bethany, said: “It was a pleasure to be welcomed so warmly at Wakoos and meet up with some familiar faces! “We’re looking to attract future professionals from across the region to study EYE at Collyer’s and we are getting increased interest from Billingshurst, Pulborough and Petworth. I’m hoping that the success story at Wakoos will persuade more young people to qualify in this extremely rewarding profession.” Collyers, who offer outstanding training to young people and adults, support excellent practice, career opportunities and progression, in the Early Years sector. Debbie Mollart has enjoyed over 30 years training practitioners, and retains the desire and enthusiasm to continue to inspire the next generation. Katie Durrant said: “I chose to study at Collyers as it had such an outstanding reputation and it was so easy to travel there. I did some of my training here in the baby room, so when I was offered a position, I knew how it worked and could settle in quickly to do a good job. I really enjoy the role of SENCO, as working with parents and the child in partnership is so important.” Bethany Morris successfully achieved her Level 2 Early Years qualification with Collyer’s this year, and is looking to continue at Wakoos, with the chance to continue with her training in the workplace. She said: “I have enjoyed my training at Wakoos, and am thrilled that I have been offered a Level 3 apprenticeship here, now I have my Level 2 qualification.” Steve Martell, deputy principal at the Ofsted Outstanding sixth form college, was thoroughly impressed: “I’m incredibly proud of Jade, Katie and Bethany’s success in becoming respected practitioners in this field. Debbie Mollart and her amazing team at Collyer’s are, without doubt, some of the leading EYE experts in the country.”

Horsham Film student documents Sea Turtle conservation through women’s empowerment

A local and aspiring filmmaker is soon to produce her first short documentary. Catherine Brookes will be following a team of local women who are protecting endangered sea turtles from illegal poachers in El Salvador. Catherine, who was born in Storrington and whose family now reside in Ashington, is a Wildlife Filmmaking student at

UWE Bristol, in partnership with the BBC Natural History Unit. Her documentary, ‘Treasures from the Tides’ will demonstrate how this group of Salvadoran women are being empowered through the conservation of sea turtles. The poaching of sea turtle eggs is a huge problem in many parts of the world, with 95% of all eggs laid stolen at some of the most active

nesting beaches. In El Salvador, eggs are highly prized and sold on the illegal black market for human consumption. In the remote village of Barra de Santiago, a group of local women are on a mission to put a stop to poaching. They are the members of an all-female conservation organisation called AMBAS, and run a sea turtle hatchery where eggs are kept safe from poachers. This is a community where it is often frowned upon for a woman to work outside the home, and the AMBAS ladies have faced some backlash along the way. They are truly going against their societal norms and standing up for the wildlife they live so closely alongside. Their hard work has paid off. AMBAS have now saved tens of thousands of sea turtle eggs and converted many poachers from the local community into conservationists. With a background in Biology and Ecology, Catherine is passionate about the natural world with a particular interest in marine conservation. She is excited to meet the women of AMBAS and share their inspiring stories through her documentary. Catherine is also seeking crowdfunding towards the production of ‘Treasures from the Tides’. An Evening with Sir Geoff Hurst

With the district well and truly whipped into a Football World Cup frenzy, there seems no better time for local fans to hear from a true World Cup legend. Sir Geoff Hurst made football history when he became the first player to have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup Final. To this day,

he remains the only player to have done so. The Capitol Theatre is proud to present An Evening with Geoff Hurst. Before his visit next week, the theatre caught up with him to ask a few questions: Question: What did it feel like to win the World Cup in 1966?

Answer: It’s hard to put the feeling into words, especially in my case, because I only made my debut in 1966, so it was all potentially overwhelming. I was young though and it all came so suddenly, but I enjoyed it all. Q: What was the feeling like with the population after you won? A: It was less of a major thing in the months after winning the World Cup. We were congratulated and it was obviously a great achievement. It’s become bigger and bigger with the passage of time, because England haven’t won it subsequently. Q: Which is your favourite goal in the final? A: Everywhere I go I’m asked about the hat trick, it all passed in a blur at the time. I guess my second is best remembered for the accompanying controversy, but I view them all as equal. Q: Who was the best player you played with in your England career? A: There were many, Bobby Charlton was immense. In the World Cup final, Alan Ball was magnificent. He ran his heart out and he cared so much, his patriotism shone through. Jimmy Greaves was the best goal scorer in English history, and a mate as well, obviously Martin was my team mate for years and we had a great understanding on the pitch, but overall MOORO, Bobby Moore would be the calming influence

and overall leader, and quality player, that I would choose as the number one. We have had good chances to win it again, especially in 1970 and 1990. I guess it’s surprising that we never won again, but West Germany exacted revenge for our victory over and over again in subsequent years. I’m always cautiously optimistic when the World Cup comes around. I’d love us to win but, realistically, there are probably better qualified teams this time. Q: Which team do you support? A: West Ham are my team, and always will be. However, I live a long way from there, so I only get there a couple of times per year. Q: How did it feel when you were knighted? A: Obviously, it was an honour to be knighted. I don’t know what else to say about that, other than I feel very privileged -and to receive for winning something for England is even better. Q: How do you spend your time these days? A: I spend a lot of time with my wife and grandchildren, and see my children as much as possible. I still attend all England games at Wembley and I make lots of personal appearances, such as the theatre tour I am undertaking with Terry and Freda, my agents from A1 Sporting Speakers, as well as sportsman’s dinners and lots of corporate events. Q: Where are your happiest

memories from your playing days? A: My favourite grounds were the old Wembley and Upton Park. Great atmospheres at both and many happy memories for me. Q: What do you think of the huge amounts of money players are paid these days? A: Wages have changed. I think I was on about £20 a week in the sixties, but good luck to today’s players. They exist in a different World today, but it’s a short career, so let them enjoy it whilst they can. Q: Why are you doing this short theatre tour? A: It’s based around the World Cup this year. We are looking forward to getting out and about and meeting the fans of England, and hopefully a few West Ham fans as well! It’s always interesting to have a laugh with the people that have supported football for all these years. I’ve hopefully got an interesting story to tell, and little did I know that on the 31st of July in 1966, when I was lucky enough to score my World Cup final hat trick, people would still be asking about it fifty two years later! And the fact that it hasn’t happened since has kept it as a major talking point! Sir Geoff Hurst appears at The Capitol Horsham on Wednesday 4 July at 8pm. Tickets are available from the Box Office: 01403 750220 or online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com

Saturday brings back Harry’s Tricks playing 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s popular music from Britain

But if you are looking for something different, see The Scorchers playing Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae, listen to Salsadelic with their Latino rhythms and revel in those well-known favourites with The Spinettes Vintage Timeless Classics. New for Sunday is the King’s Lagoon Flying Swordfish Dance Band with their compelling mix of African and South American rhythms and melodies. Would you like a wedding with a difference, or perhaps the chance to renew your vows in a true pagan ceremony? Located in the idyllic Faerie Woodland, the Loxwood Joust is offering couples the chance to celebrate their special day in style on the 4th, 5th 11th and 12th August with a bespoke handfasting wedding ceremony, a mediaeval banquet and seats in the royal

pavilion, with bride’s Knight of choice, jousting for her favour and honour. A handfasting is an ancient Pagan custom that originally worked in a similar way to our modern day engagement. Two people would announce that they were ‘bound’ in love for a year and a day, and this would give them a chance to try marriage. After a year and a day, if it did

not work, they would part with no further commitment to each other. If it worked well, they got married. Handfasting was an important part of mediaeval life and the Loxwood Joust is offering a number of ceremonies for you and your guests to partake in. Ranging from full bespoke weddings through to vow renewals, a year and a day betrothals and ring blessings, you can make a promise to your loved one whether you are looking for a marriage, or a commitment for “as long as love shall last.” Ceremonies can be tailored to suit individual couples and each will receive a keepsake candle, certificate and the original souvenir script. Then, in keeping with both the mediaeval and current traditions, the wedding or handfasting party is invited to join the sumptuous mediaeval banquet. Hosted by Queen Georgiana of Loxwood the authentic four-course luncheon will be overflowing with the sights, sounds and smells of a mediaeval feast. Contrary to popular belief mediaeval food was rich and flavoursome, with banquets always designed to

amaze and entertain. So, whilst you feast and celebrate in the lavish banqueting marquee, you will be entertained with wit, amusing anecdotes and unusual antics by the court jesters, riddlers and musicians. As a further treat for the Loxwood Brides and Grooms; couples who choose to hold their bespoke handfasting wedding ceremony in the Loxwood Meadow and dine at the mediaeval banquet, will be treated with their guests to exclusive seats in the Royal Pavilion for the magnificent fully armoured jousting tournament. In addition, the bride may choose a knight to take her ‘favour’ and he will joust in her honour, whilst demonstrating his prowess with a lance combined with reckless showmanship, in a full combat jousting battle of courage and strength. So if you would like your special day to be like no other, and set in the magical Loxwood Meadows, please contact info@loxwoodjoust.co.uk for more information and we will ensure that your unique day is tailor-made just for you. Advance tickets available at www.loxwoodjoust.co.uk

Brilliant Brinsbury Show attracts bumper crowd

Around 5,000 visitors enjoyed this year’s Brinsbury Show and Country Fayre, held earlier this month at the beautiful Brinsbury campus, which is part of the Chichester College Group. As ever, animal antics were a popular draw, with pig obstacle exhibitions, terrier racing, and horse shows, attracting the crowds. Visitors were offered lots of opportunities to ‘have a go’

themselves, with activities around the campus ranging from building bird boxes to crazy golf, while expert lecturers were on hand to share lots of gardening advice. Southern Cranes were also in attendance, giving youngsters - and the young at heart - the opportunity to try their hand at controlling various construction machinery. Teresa Williams visited with her family. She said: “It was a fantastic day with the family - so much

to see and do. “All three kids had great fun. We arrived at 11 and left at four, and still didn’t see everything! “The staff and students were fabulous and a credit to Brinsbury.” Steve Hearn added: “We always enjoy supporting and spending the day at Brinsbury. We’re looking forward to next year!” A whole host of staff and students from across Brinsbury and Chichester College give their time to ensure the show goes ahead each year, including the Chichester College Group Chief Executive, Shelagh Legrave OBE, who spent the morning helping to direct traffic. Shelagh said: “We were delighted to see so many people supporting us at Brinsbury this year. Every year it seems to get bigger and better, and this year was no exception. “It was fantastic to see so many families coming together to spend Father’s Day with us, and to receive so much positive feedback about the day. “The show couldn’t happen without the support of our staff and our students, who volunteer their time to organise, set up and run the event.”

High scoring draw curbs Roffey’s progress Saturday June 23 – Sussex Premier League Eastbourne 301 all out (57.2 overs) Roffey 279-8 (52) Match drawn – Roffey 15 points – Eastbourne 14

At their Innes Memorial Ground, Roffey lost the toss and fielded first in favourable, sunny batting conditions, with a customary good wicket and fast outfield. Roffey contained Eastboune, until, towards the end of the visitors’ allocation Ben Twine went on the rampage, and although Roffey subsequently kept going they were unable to chase down the formidable 302 run target. This was Roffey’s sole draw to date, but they remain top – now by 12 points ahead of East Grinstead – and are the only unbeaten team in the league. Former Kent batsman James Hockley and Sussex’s Delray Rawlins were danger men. Hockley had a narrow escape in the first over, but went on to make 35 before being bowled by Leigh Harrison (2-32), who then accounted for the incoming batsman first ball. And, after Rohit Jagota had dismissed the other opener and Eastbourne’s number three, the score was 62-4 with no hint of Twine’s subsequent run feast. Rawlins drove 4 of his nine fours in one over before dawdling off at funereal pace for 57 following a stunning low catch by Ben Manenti off Stuart Whittingham, who went on to take 2-52. Turner didn’t win a prize for charging Whittingham and being embarrassingly castled, and at 196-6 with less than 15 overs at Eastbourne’s disposal Roffey appeared in command. Only four other batsmen reached double figures, but Twine was the major string in Eastbourne’s bow, finishing unbeaten on 135 with 15 fours and 8 sixes, 83 runs coming from the final eight overs. Jagota took three wickets, Alex Collins two and Theo Rivers one,

but Roffey faced a daunting task. Unable to bowl or throw following an injury playing for Kent 2nd XI, Manenti was the first to go, but, even after Rivers departed, at 145-2 Roffey were still in the hunt. Jagota’s dismissal – for 46 - was significant, but Jibran Khan was batting well, finishing with 87. However, at 237-8 Roffey needed 65 from 23 balls. With Sussex’s Jofra Archer, Tom Haines and Phil Salt watching, Matt Davies and Harrison swung the bat, putting on 42, but getting to 302 proved to be too big an ask. Curiously, in the last over

with Roffey having no realistic chance of knocking off the runs, Eastbourne had six men on the boundary instead of trying to grab the last two wickets for victory. Roffey Coach Simon Fearnley told us: “This was the first time we’ve really been stretched this season, we produced several useful innings, but we needed one of our batsmen to get a hundred if we were going to chase down such a big total.” On Saturday Roffey are at Cricketfield Road for the mouth-watering local derby against Horsham.

Not content with a nine wicket trouncing against Tunbridge Wells in the previous round, Roffey bounced another strong Kent championship side – Blackheath – out of the National Cup with an emphatic win last Sunday. Blackheath are the current leaders in the Kent League and won the National Cup in 2015. At Roffey’s Crawley Road ground Blackheath were eliminated by five wickets last season, but at the Rectory Field in south east London, used as an outground by Kent in many earlier seasons, the margin was even more pronounced after Roffey had won the toss and inserted the hosts. Blackheath set off like a train but hit the buffers in the second over, bowled by Leigh Harrison – opener Wells thrashed wildly at the first ball, the swirling skier not quite going to hand, before his partner, Ahmed, survived an LBW appeal ahead of Wells departing for an exciting 5 ball four - described by Blackheath as a prolific scorer, Wells paid the price for disrespecting the Roffey bowlers. Roffey were without Ben Manenti, Stuart Whittingham (both cup-tied) and the injured Luke Barnard, but the six bowlers used contained Blackheath well after Ahmed had chanced his arm with an early six and four. Jibran Khan pulled off an excellent catch, again off Harrison, to reduce Blackheath to 33-2 in the eighth over, and although another steepler didn’t stick, the batsmen were kept in check and a smart catch by wicket keeper Matt Davies, Roffey Captain, standing up to George Fleming, confined the score to 79-3 at the 20 over drinks break. After another well-set batsman had been dismissed, Blackheath were 131-4 with ten overs remaining. At 144-5 in the 32nd over a Blackheath player asked his team-

mates who they had in the next round, but the optimism was vastly misplaced as Alex Collins sliced through the middle and lower order after Theo Rivers (2-45) had seen off two seemingly comfortablyplaced batsmen. A high overhead catch by Jibran Khan left the score at 168-7 in the 38th over, before, in the 39th, Usman Khan latched onto a lofty strike, before, next ball, George Fleming ran in to take a catch by his bootlaces. Seven runs came off Blackheath’s final over but a target of 186 was at least 50 short, Collins finishing with 4-19, Harrison 2-34 and Fleming 1-29. Replying, Roffey were soon in trouble against Blackheath’s impressive opening attack and at 13-2 off 17 balls alarm bells were ringing. There was some playing and missing and the occasional streaky four behind the keeper, but Rivers and Paul Harrison steadily achieved control and by 20 overs they both had forties with a six apiece, 87 runs being required from 120 balls. Some Victor Silvester bowling – slow, slow, quick, quick, slow - from the Canary Wharf end did nothing to halt Roffey’s progress. A lengthily disputed run out, eventually ruled in Roffey’s favour, denied Blackheath further success as Rivers and Harrison batting beautifully with 19 fours and 6 sixes between them accelerated to take Roffey to victory with seven and a half overs to spare, both finishing unbeaten on 85. Blackheath’s motto is Docendum et Discendum – to be taught and to learn. Paul Harrison told the District Post: “The wicket was doing a bit more than I thought!” and Rivers said: “Their openers put us under pressure, but it was great to be partnered by Paul – we just decided to bat quietly to see off their strike bowlers and that was a good win against them.” Roffey Coach Simon Fearnley added: “The best win I’ve seen from Roffey, because of Blackheath’s exceptionally useful new ball attack.” In the next round on Sunday July 15 Roffey face another tough challenge with a home tie against Chingford, who are currently fourth in the strong Essex Premier League.

Chris Nash captains Notts with a big century Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter On the day that Horsham Cricket Club’s Tom Haines scored his maiden hundred for Sussex another of Horsham and Sussex’s favourite cricketing sons – Chris Nash – captained Nottinghamshire. That match was a Division 1 county championship fixture against Essex at Chelmsford, Chris going on to lead his new side to victory. Chris was captain again for the next game, with England’s Stuart Broad in the Nottinghamshire team versus Worcestershire at Trent Bridge, when, opening the innings and sharing a first wicket stand of 164, Chris notched up his first century for Notts, scoring 139. 35 year old Chris went to Hor-

sham’s Heron Way School and then Collyers and started playing at Horsham Cricket Club when he was

When you have had a lean run and start to feel good then you need to make it count seven and was soon on Sussex’s radar. A key member of Sussex’s Championship and trophy winning sides, Chris played in excess of 450 games for the county, his over 17,500 runs including 25 centuries. He also took more than 150 wickets

and, after Luke Wright relinquished the captaincy, was called on to lead Sussex, before sadly leaving the county at the end of last season after 15 happy years with Sussex. At close of play at Trent Bridge, speaking of his first century for Nottinghamshire, Chris Nash said: “It was amazing! After a tough start to the season, to come through to get a big hundred means a lot and it was a real relief. When you have had a lean run and start to feel good then you need to make it count, and it’s great to put the team in a strong position!” Much as Sussex supporters are always pleased to see popular Chris Nash doing well, they only wish that he was still scoring hundreds for the county of his birth.

Horsham consolidate with another good win Saturday June 23 - Sussex Premier League Middleton 198-8 (58 overs) Horsham 200-5 (47.3 overs) Horsham won by 5 wickets – Horsham 28 points – Middleton 8 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At the coast Middleton elected to bat and lost an early wicket, Sussex’s George Garton bowling Will Burrows for a duck. But, evergreen Middleton skipper Sean Heather in partnership first with Jack Dawling and then prolific former Surrey League player Mahesh Rawat took the score to 127-3, Dawling falling for 33 and Heather 56, both victims of captain for the day Will Beer. And, when Joe Ashmore bowled Rawat – for 40 – Middleton’s progress slowed, only two other batsmen reaching double figures. Garton finished with 1-24 from his mandatory six overs, Ashmore taking 2-49 and Beer 4-63 from 17 overs, a run out by Jamie Thornely

accounting for the other wicket. Even allowing for Horsham’s depleted batting resources without both Michael Thornely and the in form Craig Gallagher, a target of 199 from 52 overs was relatively modest. In reply, Horsham reached 73-3, with last week’s double centurian Tom Johnson and Will Beer both out – Johnson for 33, but Nick Oxley again batted well for a responsible 65 not out, accompanied by Garton (38) before Ashmore and then Mika Ekstrom batted with Oxley to see Horsham home with 27 balls still in the bank, all five Middleton bowlers taking a wicket apiece. Mika Ekstrom told the District Post: “After we took a wicket in the third over they batted at three an over for most of the rest of their innings. The square boundaries were short so we were confident that we could chase down Middleton’s score and we were well poised after 30 overs. Nick (Oxley) just tipped it around and Joe (Ashmore) batted well after George (Garton) had struck 3 fours and 2 sixes. It was a fairly

comfortable win for us.” Horsham are fifth, two points behind Brighton & Hove and 12 shy of third-placed Preston Nomads. On Saturday Horsham entertain local rivals, Roffey. Meanwhile, elsewhere – at Cuckfield the home side posted 273-9 declared, overseas player Sam Whiteman remained out of form, but Captain Bradley Gayler made 126 before Nick Patterson took 5-31 to bowl out Ifield for 143. At Saint Hill, Fynn Hudson-Prentice’s 4-26 restricted Brighton to 197 all out, hosts East Grinstead winning by 4 wickets with time to spare, Hudson-Prentice making 60. And, at Fulking Hastings were shot out for 148, before Preston Nomads romped home by 9 wickets with more than 30 overs unused. Daniel Phillps scored 94 out of the 123 run opening stand. Hastings are bottom, 14 points below Ifield and 29 behind Middleton. And, across the border, former Horsham leg spinner Michael Munday took 6-38 for his new club, Reigate Priory, who top the Surrey Championship.

Billingshurst edged out in close finish Saturday June 23 - Sussex League Division 2 Chichester Priory Park 164 all out (51.1 overs) Billingshurst 155 all out (47.2 overs) Chichester won by 9 runs – Chichester 30 points - Billingshurst 12 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Chichester’s ground on the Goodwood Estate Billingshurst inserted the hosts and captured two early wickets, Jamie Piper and Andy Miller seeing off the openers. Chichester recovered with a 40 run partnership before Ben Williams was in the wickets again with 6-51 from 16.1 overs. Several batsmen got starts, but only Matthew Bennison (33) and Charlie Futcher, with 56, really troubled Billingshurst and when Andy Barr and Tom Haynes chipped in with a scalp apiece, Chichester

Tom Haines’ maiden Sussex century thrills members

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Wednesday June 20th will be etched into the memory of Horsham Cricket Club’s Tom Haines – and of all those lucky enough to be at Arundel that day, the day that 19 year old Tom scored his maiden hundred for Sussex’s first team in just his third senior game. And it was all the more remarkable because Tom was batting – against Durham in the county championship – with another former Sussex academician, Phil Salt. Yet Tom only received a phone call from Head Coach Jason Gillespie at 9.30 the previous evening at the Kingston hotel, where he was staying with Sussex 2nd XI, for whom he was playing at New Malden. Chris Jordan had been called up for England Lions, giving Tom his opportunity. Talking to the District

Post, Tom said: “I knew I was capable, but the only problem was that my kit was locked in our dressing room at New Malden and I don’t drive, but my mum (Rachel) collected me and my kit and took me to Arundel in the morning, which was a bit busy! I just want to keep scoring runs.” Tom had been in great form around the county, having scored recent centuries for Horsham at Hastings and Eastbourne – and, in the absence of Michael Thornely, he had been due to captain Horsham at Middleton on Saturday. Reacting to the news, Horsham Cricket Club Chairman Richard Marshall told us: “This is brilliant for Tom and his family, he’s a great little cricketer!” Sussex Director of Cricket Keith Greenfield had already described Tom as “a stand out batsman through the county’s youth and academy cricket, a very

exciting talent for us to progress over years to come.” Richard Marshall added: “Tom comes from a proper cricket family, his dad Mark captains one of the development teams at the club and his three brothers are all very keen cricketers, too. Tom is a quality player and I hope this is the first of many Sussex centuries for him.” Rachel remained at Arundel with Mark to see Tom’s innings, Mark saying: “It just felt that it was meant to be – he didn’t play and miss and just looked confident and free of trouble all day. I didn’t have time to be nervous because when he got into his 90s he hit a couple of fours to sail through to his hundred! It was good that he batted with someone that he knows so well and they just fed off each other.” Phil Salt said: “It was really special to do it with Tommy!” And, what did the avid Sussex supporters think? Paul Baker - “I’m overjoyed – another excellent player from Horsham Cricket Club’s conveyor belt of talent – long may it continue.” Jim Birch - “Brilliant – Tom never gave a chance and everyone around me at Arundel was reminiscing about all of the other fine Sussex cricketers who’ve played for Horsham.” Andrew Frank - “It was absolutely wonderful – Tom and Phil Salt matched each other run for run in two unblemished innings. It was extraordinary to see two maiden hundreds with two such exciting young players batting together and I was delighted to be able to get them both to sign my scorecard.” Frank King summed up with: “I’m absolutely thrilled, Tom and Phil have both worked so hard, it was a great day for Sussex cricket!”

were all out for 164, raising hopes in the Billingshurst camp. However, Billingshurst were soon up against in their reply, with both openers back in the hutch in double quick time. Stuart Barber and Tim Weston got Billingshurst to 50-3, until two more wickets created extra pressure. Joe de la Fuente and Daniel Joseph were causing problems with 4 victims each, and despite 40s from Weston and Barr and a rearguard effort from last pair Williams and Piper, Billingshurst fell just short and are now fourth in the table, 20 points behind leaders Haywards Heath. Three Bridges are second and Mayfield third. On Saturday Billingshurst, looking for a win to put them back in contention, return home to Jubilee Fields to welcome Ansty, who were in the Premier League last season but are now in the lower reaches of Division 2.
