There are 38 fantastic prizes worth well over £2000 - with a first prize of £250 cash. The money raised will go to the Rotary Club of Horsham’s ‘Making a Difference fund’, which provides small grants to local families and individuals who are in short term need. These grants come with very few conditions and, in case of emergencies, can be provided quickly. Applications usually come to the club through other local organisations (churches, social services, etc.) but you can apply at: https://horshamrotary.org.uk/ sitepage/how-we-help A Rotary Club spokesperson stated: “We are very active in the Horsham and surrounding areas, running several ongoing programmes and organising a wide variety of events each year…. which raise funds and provide fun and entertainment for the local community. As a result of it’s efforts, Rotary donates approx. £50,000 each year to local people and Horsham’s many deserving charitable organisations. “The Rotary Club of Horsham extends its sincere thanks to Horsham’s residents and all the local businesses, who continue to support us throughout the years. Horsham District Council has just recruited four new wardens for the District. Barry Faust and Glyn Thomas are the new warden team for Billingshurst Parish, and Alison Page and Lucy Hallett are the wardens for the unparished areas of Horsham. Barry, Glyn, Alison and Lucy join the existing team of six wardens based in Ashington Parish, Pulborough Parish and Steyning/ Bramber/Upper Beeding Parishes (joint scheme). Based within the community, the Neighbourhood Wardens work alongside partner agencies to improve the quality of life for everyone, by undertaking a number of activities from enforcement to community develop-

ment, working with the elderly, vulnerable and young people. They are managed by Horsham District Council, working closely with the Parish, and Neighbourhood Councils, to set priorities. The scheme is funded by the Parish Council and Neighbourhood Council Special Charge, with financial input from the District Council. Billingshurst Parish Council Chairman, Paul Berry, said: “We are thrilled that Barry and Glyn are joining us in Billingshurst and look forward to working with them to make a real difference in the community.” Trudie Mitchell, Chair of Denne Neighbourhood Council, added: “Denne, Forest and Trafalgar Neighbourhood Councils are really pleased that Alison and Lucy

I am so pleased that we have extended our warden scheme to five areas in the district, forward to seeing the new wardens make a positive impact on the local communities.” Neighbourhood Wardens have certain enforcement powers, and carry out high visibility patrols in their respective areas, to deter crime and anti-social behaviour. Horsham District Council is accredited by Sussex Police, and Neighbourhood Wardens can utilise certain police powers aimed at low-level anti-social behaviour. They can also exercise powers available to them as employees of the District Council, in relation to environmental offences.

think the public enjoyed the event, and I am especially grateful to the Surrey & Sussex Drum and Bugle Corps who put on a truly impressive display, and to Phil Harris and his Capel Military Vehicle Show team. I hope that those who visited left with a greater appreciation of our role in the community beyond being seen around the time of Remembrance.” Just a small range of vehicles, from those to be seen at the Capel Military Vehicle Show on 7 and 8 July, created an impressive display in the Carfax. Organiser, Phil Harris, commented: “I was delighted we were able to contribute such a great range of vehicles to Royal British Legion’s Sunday event, and hope to see many of the visitors at our own event at Capel next weekend.” Chairman, Councillor Peter Burgess, on behalf of Horsham District Council, and Nigel Caplin, Royal British Legion Horsham Chairman, addressed the parade before the Last Post was sounded and a One Minute Silence for the Fallen was observed: “Today’s event delivered a delightful ceremony honouring the armed forces past and present. It was good to see so many attending, and I would like to extend particular thanks to the marchers and the Surrey and Sussex Drum and Bugle for a truly impressive display.” The event’s road closure was managed by Horsham Time Well Spent partner, ETMS Highways.

Council prosecutes operators of Caravan Park Horsham District Council successfully prosecuted Mr Royston Cooper, director of Frankham Real Estates, which owns and runs Luckista Grove Caravan Park, for failure to comply with a Compliance Notice. The Compliance Notice was served in May 2017, after the owners failed to put right breaches of their Site Licence. These licences are issued to ensure owners of Caravan Parks provide adequate living standards for park residents. These breaches had left the residents of Luckista Grove on Billingshurst Road, north of Ashington, with intermittent electricity and water supplies, and with a

sewage treatment plant that was producing terrible smells in warm weather. The roads on site were also too narrow at points and were pot-holed and un-drained, so were muddy and flooded whenever weather was wet. At the time of the prosecution, only four of the twelve breaches listed in the Notice had been complied with, ten months after the date by which works should have been completed. Mr Cooper and Frankham Real Estates pleaded guilty at Worthing Magistrates Court on Friday 22 June and were fined a total of £15,000, plus costs and a victim surcharge. Councillor Tricia Youtan,

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community & Wellbeing, said: “I was dismayed and disappointed to hear of these breaches. The Council will not accept poor standards on caravan sites; they are the homes of residents, and need to meet the established standards to ensure that they provide a pleasant and safe living environment. “We gave the owners advice and guidance, for over a year, before the continuing poor standards led to the decision to take legal action. “We will continue to closely monitor all such matters Districtwide.”

Would you know what to do with a lost cat? New findings suggest no

The making of a princess maY PEARSON

Entertainment Editor

With thousands of cats going missing each year, knowing what to do if you find one could mean the difference between a happy reunion or a sad separation. However, findings released by feline welfare charity Cats Protection show that the UK population is confused about what to do if they spot a wandering cat. And with less than a third of all cats microchipped, the odds of a happy reunion are not good for our feline friends unless we know how to help them. Carried out in the run-up to this year’s Microchipping Month (June), the survey of 1,000 people showed nearly half (48%) would not approach an unfamiliar cat. Reasons for not approaching it include the possibility the cat may be aggressive, may have an owner nearby or that it could simply be seeking attention. And while slightly more than half (52%) would approach the cat, they would fail to find out if the cat has an owner. Only 42% of this sample would check for a collar to reunite the cat with its owner, while just 20% would take the cat to a vet to be scanned for a microchip. Cats Protection says that while no approach is totally wrong, there are some key things the public can do to help them decide whether or not the cat needs help. Karen Thompson, Deputy Manager of Cats Protection’s National Cat Adoption Centre, explained: “One of the main things is to keep an eye out for a new cat over time. “If you see the cat rarely, and it appears well-fed every time you see it, then the chances are it has an owner or

it is a feral cat that is accustomed to living in the wild. “However, if the cat is hanging around a lot and, over time, looks thin, underweight, or distressed, then this could be a domestic cat that has become lost and is in need of help.” If the cat seems friendly, Cats Protection’s top tips are: Check the cat for a collar and, if there are no visible signs of ownership, take the cat to your local vet to be scanned for a microchip; If the cat is sick or injured, get veterinary assistance for the animal quickly or call the RSPCA, USPCA, or SSPCA; Ask your neighbours if they recognise the cat; Check local newspapers, listings, and social media sites, in case the cat is listed as missing; Cat owners can assist with the chances of a happy reunion by ensuring their cat is microchipped. “We know that less than a third of all pet cats are microchipped and a quarter have no identification at all,” continued Karen, “This means many lost pet cats can be mistaken for stray cats and rehomed by people or cat welfare charities. “Microchipping your cat increases the chances of a happy reunion, because it is a permanent and safe form of identification, though it is important to keep the microchip details up-to-date if you change your address.” A video created by Cats Protection, showing cats can’t do the things people can to find their way home, as well as further advice on how to help a stray cat, can be found at: www.cats.org.uk/microchipping. If you’re a regular user of social media sites, there’s a good chance that you’re aware of a trend that sees people donate their long hair to charity. In all likelihood, the recipient of hair donations, sent mostly (though not exclusively) from the UK, will be ‘Little Princess Trust’. Charlotte Tasquier, from Horsham, is one such person who wanted to do her bit for the charity, which provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young adults, up to the age of 24, who have lost their hair owing to cancer treatment and other illnesses. A now delighted Charlotte admitted to being “super excited, and a little nervous” in the lead up to her appointment at Studio2, near Littlehaven. She explained: “On the day, I felt very nervous

but excited to have my long locks chopped off. We tied my hair up in two little plaits and, very quickly, they got cut off and I was left with a choppy bob! I have raised over £200 for the Little Princess Trust too.” If you would like to help Char-

lotte support Little Princess Trust, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/charlottetasquier For more information about the Little Princess Trust, please visit: http://www.littleprincesses.org. uk/

New hip for local cycling enthusiast! Geoffrey Bragg

Geoffrey Bragg is a retired aircraft engineer from Southwater, who had a left hip operation on the NHS on November 24, 2016, and was under the care of consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Khalid Drabu at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital in Horley. With a big month ahead of him, the 65-year-old will soon be crossing the Channel to cycle two days to watch the Tour de France

with some friends, clocking up a total of 160 miles. Then, at the end of July, he is taking part in one of the `must-ride’ events of the summer, the Dunwich Dynamo, a mad cap night-time ride of about 115 miles, from London Fields in Hackney to Dunwich on the Suffolk Coast. “In the months before I had my hip operation, I could never have imagined doing these rides,”

said the retired aircraft engineer, “Back then, it was painful just getting on and off my bike and, by the time I had the op, I could only do short rides.” The restricted movement in his hip, and the pain, also impacted his volunteer work. A well-known face in Southwater, Geoffrey volunteers at his local church, at an after-school club, and drives elderly people to a social event in Horsham twice a month. Yet getting in and out of a car was proving more and more difficult. He also uses his engineer skills to volunteer with Jubilee Sailing Trust, which enables people with disabilities to go to sea, and regularly drives to Southampton to help maintain the tall ships: “You have to be a contortionist to do some of the maintenance work, crawling around in the engine room. Without the hip operation I wouldn’t have been able to continue.” Geoffrey is convinced his hip problems started when he had a cycle accident about seven years ago, falling off his bike when it hit black ice. Over time, arthritis took hold, reducing his mobility and causing pain. By Easter 2016, following x-rays and MRI scans at Horsham Hospital, Geoffrey was told he needed a hip operation: “I was the one that

said `whoa! let me think about this’. You worry that something manmade is not going to be as good as what God gave you. It took me a few days to get my head around it.”

The whole thing was unbelievable. I am grateful to the NHS and the staff at Spire Gatwick Park - I couldn’t speak highly enough of them As an NHS patient, he was able to choose his surgeon and plumped for Mr Khalid Drabu at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital in Horley. Despite the pain, he was still doing short cycle rides right up until his operation on November 24, as he was determined to keep his muscles in the best condition to aid recovery. A thankful Geoffrey explained: “The whole thing was unbelievable. I am grateful to the NHS and the staff at Spire Gatwick Park - I couldn’t speak highly enough of them. I even got to choose what level of anaesthetic I could have -

something I didn’t expect. When I woke up in recovery, the nurse told me my actual operation only took about half an hour - how Mr Drabu and his team did that, I don’t know!” After his operation, Geoffrey was so keen to get back on his bike that he followed physiotherapy advice to the letter, and even paid to have extra sessions. “You have to be prepared to follow all the instructions and do everything the physio recommends,” he said. His perseverance paid off... a note in his diary on January 16, 2017, just a month and a half after his operation, says “First ride today. Very short, very cold and wet.” It was the beginning of his road to recovery and back to doing the sport he loves. Geoffrey gradually built up the distance and, by last summer, he was joining friends on 100-mile rides to East Wittering and to Beachy Head: “It’s not just about getting the hip working again, but about building muscles and stamina. Cycling is perfect for that, as it is low impact. I want to keep cycling as long as I can.” Now with his new hip, Geoffrey could be doing just that for at least another 20 years, well into his mid-80s.

Whitney & Associates, One small step for Janette wins international Business Excellence award Grandparents?

By Nigel Winter, Partner at DMH Stallard Recent headlines suggest that a proposed amendment to the Children Act would have the effect of bestowing grandparents with the right to have contact with their grandchildren following a family breakdown before too long. Family Law Partner Nigel Winter considers the current situation and what grandparents can do now to maintain contact. Given the demands of modern life, many grandparents comment that they have never been so popular. When you consider that 4.9million mothers with dependent children are in work and one in three families have both parents in full time jobs together with the rising cost of childcare, it’s hardly surprising that grandparents are called on to lend their support. Indeed it appears that the decline in multi-generational families holidaying together may have been reversed in some instances, with the new concept of ‘Grandping’ emerging; childcare on hand is clearly an undeniable advantage. But

what happens if relationships breakdown and there is a dispute between parents and grandparents, divorce, or even one parent pre-deceasing the other? As the law currently stands, applications for continued access can be made to the Court under the Children Act, with the focus squarely on the children and their ‘best interests’. In fact grandparents have to jump through two hoops in that they have to seek the Court’s permission to even make an application for contact in the first place. This is to ensure that the Courts ‘screen’ those applications that are clearly not in the children’s best interests. Even so, in 2016 some 2,000 grandparents were successful in persuading the Court that their application met that criteria. The proposed change now is that there should be a presumption that grandparents should be involved as much as possible in the lives of their grandchildren. The ‘right’ being discussed actually refers to the child’s right to have a relationships with close family members which would also include aunts and uncles. The debate has rightly generated a great deal of interest in the media, but this amounts to just a ‘small step’ for grandparents. Should grandparents with issues of access wait until the law is changed? That that can only really be answered by whether the delay (by which time the children might have possibly reached the age of 18 in any event given the demands on Parliament’s

time), is in their best interests. Usually it is not. Any application relating to the children will be determined on the basis of those best interests as should the decision by any grandparents contemplating an application. Currently one can seek the Court’s permission at the same time as making the application to see the children simply by ticking a box on the relevant form, with no additional fee to pay. In practice and under the current law, the Family Courts do recognise the importance of children spending time with their grandparents. Furthermore these case do not have to end up in Court. Indeed it is compulsory that an applicant tries to reach an agreement through Mediation or other out of Court negotiation before applying to the Court. It is hard to imagine the heartache a grandparent might feel when denied access to their grandchildren, or how upset the grandchildren might be. In the absence of a genuine reason for why such access is contrary to the children’s best interests, every effort should be made to reach an out of Court settlement. This does occur frequently in cases where it is clear to the parties that the Court would make an order in favour of the grandparents, if a Judge had to make a decision. Last week Acquisition International announced the winners of their prestigious 2018 Business Excellence Awards including Horsham’s own business consultants Janette Whitney & Associates who won Best Business Consultancy 2018 Southern England. The awards are designed to provide an overview of the very best of the best, who have worked hard to achieve phenomenal success for their clients. The awards are given solely on merit, following a comprehensive selection and judging process and are awarded to commend those most deserving for their ingenuity and hard work, distinguishing them from their competitors and proving them worthy of recognition. Each and every nomination is subject to a lengthy and in-depth assessment process, designed to separate the truly remarkable from their peers. The process begins with the distribution of voting forms to Acquisition International’s worldwide network of partners and industry experts. The votes received are then combined and alongside supporting evidence, subjected to in-house research, knowledge and the expertise of a network of corporate leaders and experts to arrive at the final winners list. Janette Whitney & Associates are multi-award-winning business consultants and business growth specialists based in Horsham. They provide strategic advice in respect of business planning and growth, financial rescue, raising finance and troubleshooting business challenges. They also provide marketing strategy and advice, and business mentoring, coaching and training. Their clients

include businesses at any stage of growth from start-ups to those with £10m annual turnover across a diverse range of industries both in the UK and overseas. Of their success founder Janette Whitney said, “We’re delighted to win, particularly as I had no idea we’d even been nominated, and I believe our success is attributable to our integrity, commitment, professionalism and our one solution does not fit all approach. But our success is also due to the fact that we have 40 years+ experience in a number of specialist areas and sectors, meaning we can provide both a high level and very tailored service. We’re relatively small and that also means our service is accessible, personal and flexible. We’re very proactive and as a result, many of our clients regard us as a trusted extension of their team who they can call on as and when needed.” Discussing the awards themselves, Laura Hunter, Coordinator of Acquisition International awards, comments on the success of their deserving winners: “These awards rewards and recognise the hard work undertaken by businesses of all sizes from across the corporate landscape. Congratulations and best of luck for the future to all of my winners, I am extremely proud of your success.” You can learn more about Janette Whitney & Associates at http://www.whitneyassocs.co.uk/ and you can read more about the reason for their success at https:// www.acq-intl.com/issues/2018business-excellence-awards/58/.

Bridge to Farce at The Capitol In the best tradition of Great British Farce, a new play is ‘swinging’ its way into Horsham this August, at the Capitol Theatre! After two highly successful sell-out runs, this naughty new comedy is being staged by Simply Cuckoo Productions, for two nights only. Written by Sussex based playwrights, its unlikely combination of bridge-playing and wife-swapping is sure to excite great interest from theatregoers of all kinds! A talented cast, including David Corbett (BBC’s ‘WPC 56’, ‘Doctors’ & ‘The Coroner’), remain (just!) in control throughout, as their characters navigate a madcap evening of cross-purpose confusion and delicious double-entendre! Politically ambitious Margaret and long- suffering husband Norman are expecting a new couple into their Bridge circle. When wifeswapping beginners Barry & Angie arrive by mistake, both couples spend an alarming evening at cross purposes! Meanwhile, bridge-playing Edward and Charlotte (Margaret and Norman’s intended guests) enjoy a party with George and Zoe – Barry and Angie’s intended hosts! When the party is in full ‘swing’, all are caught in compromising situations as Bridge turns to Farce... “Bridge to Farce” - The NODA Award-Winning New COMEDY BY RICHARD WILLIS & PAUL RUSE. Richard Willis’s direction of his and Paul Ruse’s hit comedy combines all the frantic confusion of “Fawlty Towers” with quite the cleverest of “Carry On” naughtiness! With speculation the play could ultimately find its way to the West End, co-writer Paul Ruse, who lives

locally in Cuckfield, is delighted Sussex audiences are the first to enjoy its racy, yet clever, humour: “Although the theme of the play is risqué, the resulting naughtiness occurs only in the minds of audiences!” The writing duo, who met when working at Sky Television, are already close to finishing their next comedy, but remain determined, once again, to bring it to Sussex audiences first: “Being local, it’s great to see first-hand just how audiences react, not just during performances, but in the days that follow”. Performance: Friday 24 August, 8pm; Saturday 25 August, 7.15pm, the Capitol Theatre, Horsham. Tickets: £16.50 (£15 Concessions), available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Box Office: 01403 750220

Comedy beats returns to The Lambs Inn

Comedy Beats return to The Lamb Inn near Rusper on Thursday the 12th of July. We’ve been doing shows there since the autumn of 2016. When we set the company up they were one of the first few venues we started working with. This will be our sixth show for them and it is always one of the gig’s we most look forward to doing. It’s a great space for comedy and unusually the venue has a removable roof

so if the weather is good there is always the option to do the show under the stars. The closing act is the wonderful Robert White. He came second in Britain’s Got Talent a few weeks ago and is currently one of the most in demand comedians on the circuit. He did a show for us at The Holbrook club in Horsham a couple of weeks ago and the tickets sold out. It was a great night and Robert closed the show brilliantly.

For anyone who didn’t see him on BGT he is a musical act and describes himself as the only gay, Aspergic, quarter Welsh comic on the circuit. If you haven’t seen him before he is definitely an act not to be missed. As with most of our shows there are four acts on the bill. The opening act is the highly versatile John Ryan, he has great material but is also very good at interacting with his audience. After the first interval it will be the turn of the legendary circuit veteran John Moloney. I have been watching him do stand up since the late eighties and have never seen him have a bad gig. He is without a doubt one of the most respected comics on the circuit. The host for the evening is David Ward, he is one of those acts who has mastered the art of compering. with David at the helm I know it will be a great night of comedy. It all takes place at The Lamb Inn in Lamb’s Green. Tickets are priced at £22.50 which includes a fish and chip meal and can be purchased in advance directly from the venue on 01293 871336 or online by visiting www.comedybeats.com Food is served from 7.00 and the show begins at 8.30.

Looking for Affordable Home Opportunities in Horsham?

Open day: Saturday July 7 Hosted by Moat Homes The affordable homes route: an alternative, safe way to get on the property ladder THIS July could well be the answer to the dreams and prayers of first-time buyers and potential property owners who think may not have enough money to buy their home in Horsham. Property values, such as in Horsham, have continued to ramp up and those earning modest incomes feeling left on the sidelines and without hope of ever buying a home. Well, think again. Families finding themselves in

a similar situation are turning to the affordable homes route to get on the property ladder. One avenue offering hopes for those looking to get on the property ladder is Shared Ownership. Usually aimed at first time buyers that can’t afford to buy a property 100%, ownership of the property is ‘shared’ with a housing association. The buyer’s share may be between 25-75%. With low deposits and subsidised rent paid to the housing association, shared ownership offers an achievable way of affordably owning your own home. Moat Homes: Broadacres And that’s where Moat Homes,

Quote The District Post when booking

a leading housing association in the South East of England, comes in and is offering a great opportunity for potential property buyers in Horsham. It will be hosting an open day on Saturday July 7 to offer the last of its remaining three apartments for shared ownership on its exciting development in Broadacres. Flats 2, 5 and 7 Bluebell Court, an excellent collection of one two bedroom apartments and two bedroom houses, will be available to reserve off plan on a first come first served basis. Located in the beautiful village of Southwater and boasting a Sussex countryside backdrop,

Broadacres offers the best of both worlds. While being in an ideal country location, the buzz of the city is never far away. These properties available for Shared Ownership in Sussex are ideal for commuters, with train services from Horsham taking under an hour to reach Victoria and London Bridge. Southwater offers all modern amenities and combines them with traditional village charm. Facilities range from supermarkets to doctors surgeries, gift shops to chemists, and libraries to beauty salons. Meanwhile, Southwater Country Park offers an escape from everyday life. The park boasts 90 acres of water and landscape, and hosts a wide variety of watersports, ensuring Southwater provides something for everyone. And to qualify for consideration for Bluebell Court, you must have a local connection (within the last two years) to Horsham. Priority will be given for a local connection to Southwater. The share price will be from £98,000, while the full market value for a two-bed option is £260,000. Shared ownership is available for up to 38 percent, and those to be considered should have a single income of £36,008 or a joint income of £31,186. Viewings will be arranged with the successful purchaser at a later date when access to the houses is safe. For more details, contact: Jenny Slatcher at Moat Homes on 0845 359 6228 or 0771 143 8543. Charla just loves basketball! Basketball Martin Read - Sports Reporter Although she is not yet eleven and has only been playing basketball since she was nine, Charla Flint is already carving out a successful and highly promising basketball career path. Charla attends Shelley School in Broadbridge Heath and took up the sport after going to watch with her dad, former player Gary, who tells the District Post: “As soon as she saw it she was captivated and just took to it naturally. We need more girls playing and she fell in love with it and understood it straight away and studies the game.” Charla was soon on Sussex and regional basketball radar, with early trials and tournaments at Guildford’s Surrey University, and, representing the South East of England, at Sheffield. She trains with Sussex, working on her shooting skills, and learning techniques to get into spaces on the court - her busy schedule including sessions at Crawley and Burgess Hill - and Henfield – where she plays for Henfield Heat, who were undefeated when they won the mixed league this season. Charla has also

been playing for Sevenoaks in the National League Under 14 team, describing it as: “a good experience,” Gary adding: “Charla also plays netball, but basketball is her life! Next season she will be playing in Crawley’s National League side and, meanwhile has started coaching her six year old brother, inspiring him, and he’s already looking good with real ball handling talent.” Why is Charla so enthused by basketball? She says: “I love it because it’s fast paced, skilful, exciting and very entertaining to watch and play. It’s the best sport because you can play it anywhere, with anyone and you can even play on your own, too - all you need is a ball and a hoop.” And, what are Charla’s aspirations on the court? Rightly ambitious, Charla says: “I would like to play in the WBBL (Women’s British Basketball League) or the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) in the USA because in these leagues basketball is played at a very high level!” And, with such dedication, hard work and commitment, Charla certainly deserves to achieve the basketball success that she is so eagerly seeking.

Innovative Sussex cricket comes to Horsham

Monday July 2 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter With Sussex’s T20 campaign starting on Wednesday the county were keen to have some concerted short form white ball practice, but as their Hove HQ was being set up for a Little Mix pop concert, Horsham Cricket Club were asked if they could provide training facilities, which they were more than happy to do. The day started with some prodigious range hitting from the square on the main ground onto the John Dew ground with cones marking the landing places in a competition to find the longest hit. Batting, bowling and fielding drills followed before a T20 match was played – a T20 match

with a difference. The idea was to incentivise the batsmen to score runs and to get the bowlers to bowl accurately, so Head Coach Jason Gillespie introduced a few enhancements, including – an extra two runs being added if a boundary was hit off either of the first two balls of the over, imposition of a five run penalty if the batsman did not score from three consecutive balls, sixes over extra cover in the latter stages of the innings being awarded eight runs, and all no balls and wides being worth two runs – followed by a free hit. These changes were all confirmed by a variety of new signals to keep scorer Graham Irwin fully informed about the outcomes of on field activity. With a lightning fast, parched outfield and relatively modest boundaries, spectators were treated to rapid high scoring, combated by athletic

fielding – the idyllic batting conditions did not make for a day of economical bowling – “a graveyard for bowlers” was a repeated phrase. The first innings produced 261 runs, highlights being 74 from Luke Wells, an unbeaten 60 from Jofra Archer and 50 from Captain Ben Brown. In reply the chasing team began with a five ball penalty bonus, Luke Wright scoring 68 and Laurie Evans 59, but four wickets from Ollie Robinson, three from Archer and two each from Danny Briggs and Will Beer saw them fall 13 runs short, Phil Salt batting twice and Beer bowling in each innings to gain additional practice. Gillespie and batting coach, former Sussex and England stalwart Mike Yardy took their turn with fielding and umpiring and both were full of praise for Horsham’s organisation, Gillespie on his first visit to the club saying: “Good to be here, absolutely great! We’ve made a few changes today to keep the boys on their toes and up the intensity,” while Yardy added: “It’s a lovely ground and it’s great to be back. We’ve got some excellent fast bowlers and good young lions with the bat!” The players are known to love coming to Horsham and were delighted with the arrangements, Will Beer talking about Richard Marshall’s wicket saying: “I haven’t seen the square looking so good!” Sadly, Sussex’s return to Horsham against county opposition doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon, but it is something that cricket lovers and Horsham Cricket Club would dearly love to see.

Slinfold Ladies Club Golf Championship weekend Amidst the current heatwave, Slinfold ladies took to the golf course on Saturday (30 June) and Sunday (1 July) to compete in the Club’s most prestigious competition of the year – the Ladies Club Championship. The playing conditions were tough, and with a lot of run on the ball club choice and accuracy were all important. The Ladies Club Champion is determined by the lowest gross score over two rounds. There is also a trophy for the Handicap Club Champion, the player who returns the lowest nett score over the two days. After the first round, Karen Ashcroft was in the lead with a gross score of 88. Close in contention were four players with 91, including Sue Scaife whose excellent below handicap performance put her at the top of the handicap leader board with a nett score of 69. It was all to play for going into day two. After the second round, it was again closely bunched at the top with three players returning gross scores of 86. When combined with the scores from

the first round, Jo Maddams and Chris Hagg were joint first with a gross 177 necessitating a play-off over two holes – the 10th and the 18th. Both teed off on the 10th, a straight par 4, Chris down the middle and Jo off to the left. Chris’ second shot ended up on the right-hand side of the fairway around 20 yards from the front of the green. Jo’s second shot went into the trees on the left, but in a playable position and she hit it out to just behind Chris’ ball for three. Jo followed that with a chip shot to six feet from the pin. Chris over hit her chip shot taking her off the back of the green and chipped back to 12 feet from the pin for four. Both missed the putt for five and walked off all square with six apiece. On to the 18th, a dog-leg right par 5, Jo put a nice long tee shot down the left of the fairway, Chris went down the middle. Chris’ second shot put her in the middle of the gap at the dog-leg. Jo’s second shot went through the gap. Chris’ third shot went through the green and off the back, Jo put her third shot onto green about 15 feet

from the pin. Chris chipped just past the pin for four leaving her a tricky downhill putt. Jo putted up to the hole and was down for five. Chris’ putt to stay in the championship narrowly missed, skirting around the hole. So, after a scorching hot weekend of golf and a nail-biting

play-off, Jo Maddams’ par on the 18th clinched her the championship. However, Chris did not go away empty-handed as her below handicap performance in the second round combined with her first-round score secured her the Ladies Handicap Champion Salver and a handicap cut from 17 to 15.

The third gross 86 on day two was returned by Sue Thompson, equating to a nett score of 69. Combined with her nett 78 from the first round, Sue finished as runner-up in the handicap competition and a received a handicap cut from 19 to 17.

Roffey roar through to the Semi Final Sunday July 1 - Sussex GrayNicholls T20 Cup – Quarter Final Preston Nomads 107-8 (20 overs) Roffey 113-5 (13.1 overs) Roffey won by 5 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Post match, Roffey Coach Simon Fearnley told the District Post: “This was an emphatic win” and the scorecard did not lie. After Roffey had won the toss and put Preston Nomads in at the impressive lush green, irrigated Fulking ground the hosts had 38 runs on the board before the first wicket fell, 16 year old right arm seamer Jamie Atkins on his seasonal senior debut dismissing Ollie Gatting for 20. And, and even when fellow opener, skipper

Dan Phillips, was caught by Rohit Jagota off George Fleming, there was no hint of Nomads’ sudden slump. But, progress was slow and the next four batsmen could only muster 20 runs between them, and from 76-6 there was to be no meaningful recovery. Kashim Ibrahim made an unbeaten 19 and James McKerney contributed 10, but former wicketkeeper Paul Harrison took 4-14, Nomads ending on a totally inadequate 107-8 from their 20 over allocation. Replying, Ben Manenti set off in typically belligerent style with 37, including 7 fours and a six from just 14 balls. Usman Khan continued what Manenti had started - with a quickfire 37 and Jagota made 21 before Harrison clubbed a six to finish the game with 41 balls unused. Wickets had fallen

in cavalier style, but from early in the game there was only ever going to be one winner. Nomads’ assessment was: “We needed to stand up and keep going”, while Roffey’s Simon Fearnley added: “This was a sluggish pace-off wicket and we had the bowlers to suit it – George (Fleming), Rohit, Theo (Rivers) and Paul (Harrison). We put in a good all round team performance and the manner in which we won was important.” Looking to retain the cup that they won for the first time last year last year, Roffey’s semi final will be on Sunday July 22nd, with a long trip to Hastings. In the other semi final Middleton will play East Grinstead. The final will be at Sussex’s Hove HQ on Sunday September 9th.

Jennie revels in another World Cup journey! Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Cricket Club’s Jennie Wise revelled in her trip to Russia for the World Cup, telling the District Post: “It was a wonderful experience, the Russian people were so amazingly friendly. It was very tiring, but absolutely fantastic!” Jennie’s party of three have previously been to world cups in Brazil, Japan and South Africa, and European tournaments, too and their ten day visit took in St Petersburg and Kaliningrad with internal flights, culminating in a car ride to Gdansk on Poland’s Baltic coast for a return flight to Luton and

Sport

got a story? email us at sport@thedistrictpost.co.uk

straight back to work at the club, Jennie saying: “The air fare from Poland was £23, then it cost us £40 to get home on the train!” In Russia they saw Brazil play Costa Rica, Argentina v Nigeria – when there were huge cheers for cult heroes Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona – Spain v Portugal and finally England v Belgium. In Kaliningrad their hotel was just over the river from the stadium, but it was St Petersburg that really captivated, Jennie telling us: “It is such a stunning place – incredible architecture, fantastic food and great prices - very European with everyone speaking English. There were scare stories suggesting that it might be dangerous to

go, but we were treated very well and didn’t have any trouble at all, the only poor behaviour we saw was from a few of the England followers. The whole organisation was superb – we sent off our passports to get our Fan IDs with our picture, which acted as a visa allowing us to buy tickets and providing free public transport to and from the stadium.” Before going, Jennie picked out Belgium as her favourite to win the World Cup and, with surprising exits from some of the big guns, and narrow squeaks along the way, England have a real opportunity to reach the final with all eyes on Saturday’s encounter with Sweden.

Mid season Premier League results Saturday June 30 - Sussex Premier League Round up Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter With nine games played and nine to go, as reported separately, Horsham beat Roffey. Elsewhere, at Brighton, emphasising their reliance on Sussex players past and present, the hosts made 196, Phillip Salt 53, Matt Machan 56, which, together with extras, accounted for 127 of Brighton’s runs, despite Kashim Ibrahim taking 5-41. Preston Nomads were then bowled out for 171 – Luke Wells 7-57. Between them, Wells and Machan bowled 35.4 of the 48.4 overs sent down by Brighton. At the Saffrons Eastbourne were all out for 274, former Kent pro James Hockley scoring another century – 115 – and ex Sussex quick Lewis Hatchett taking 5-103 and his brother Bradley 5-86. East Grinstead succumbed for 184, Ethan Guest grabbing 5-22. At Horntye Park, Hastings

Scan me!

made 313-4 with another hundred – 133 – from young wicketkeeper Joe Billings, supported by Jake Woolley’s 90. But, Cuckfield won with 28 balls to spare, courtesy of unbeaten hundreds from Joe Ludlow (145) and Bradley Gayler (125), the pair putting on an unbroken stand of 217. And, in the only drawn match in last Saturday’s Premier League, at Ifield Middleton declared on 274-5, prolific Mahesh Rawat notching up a further hundred – 110 not out – and Sean Heather making 95. Middleton had two extra overs to dismiss Ifield, but were thwarted, Ifield hanging on at 198-9 when stumps were drawn after Mike Norris had made 81. Hastings are bottom with 82 points, ten less than Ifield. Former Horsham leg spinner Michael Munday took 4-71 Reigate Priory – including the scalp of new Sussex overseas signing Tom Bruce. Reigate top the Surrey Championship by 25 points.

Exceptionally strong Horsham side overturns Roffey

Matches between Horsham and Roffey are always keenly fought – Horsham have been League Champions on eight occasions and serial cup winners, including the national cup at Lord’s, but latterly Roffey have usurped the crown with a hat trick of Championships

and are current holders of the Sussex Cup, adding spice to the quest for local supremacy. And, recent matches have not been immune from controversy and drama, with weather abandonments, rearrangements and resounding Roffey home victories. So, there is always much to play for and this year, to Roffey’s misfortune, with no Sussex fixtures either side of the match, Horsham took the opportunity to play Jofra Archer, a former player still registered, Sussex’s Will Beer - a long standing Horsham player – and George Garton, who has been in the Horsham side this season. The remainder of Horsham’s team was also strong. Some Roffey supporters and some neutral observers felt that Horsham’s team selection

was a bridge too far, but Roffey Captain Matt Davies took it as a compliment that Horsham felt they needed to field such a strong team, and pre match, Roffey Coach Simon Fearnley said: “We need to be tested against strong players in games like this – the best arena for us to be able to pass judgement on our players,” - and there is no doubt that, while it might rankle in some quarters, every team would take the opportunity to select their strongest possible side, thereby raising the standard of the league. Nobody would decline the services of Jofra Archer, and Horsham’s team might have been even stronger but for recent Sussex centurian Tom Haines being sidelined with concussion after being hit on the

head by Tymal Mills in the nets and Craig Gallagher absent pending fatherhood. Other factors also mitigated against Roffey – Sussex fast bowler Stuart Whittingham was rested by the county and unavailable for selection, prolific spinner Luke Barnard was sidelined through injury and Ben Manenti’s damaged shoulder prevented him from bowling. So, the cards were heavily loaded in Horsham’s favour and they took full advantage, winning the toss and batting first in excellent conditions. Tom Johnson’s rapid 33 set the tone, followed by a 90 run partnership with 56 from Tom Clark and 84 from Will Beer, who often gets runs against Roffey. Roffey had bowled and fielded well until there were

mishaps in the last eight overs, when 82 runs were added, Thornely making 51 and George Garton an unbeaten 51 off 30 balls, including 7 fours and 2 sixes. Theo Rivers took three wickets and Leigh Harrison two, but for the second week running Roffey needed to chase over 300. From 27-2 with both openers gone, Archer and Man of the Match Garton (4-32), assisted by Joe Ashmore, soon reduced Roffey to 45-6 and it became a question of whether defeat could be avoided. A rearguard action between Davies – who top-scored with 41 – Chris Webb on seasonal debut and George Fleming raised some hope, but, bowling flat out, Archer (4-24 from 14 overs) returned to secure Horsham’s substantial victory. Michael Thornely told the District Post: “This was our strongest team for 4 or 5 years – we would have picked the same team whoever we’d been playing, why wouldn’t you? We played very well and it was a good game of cricket.” Matt Davies said: “I’m disappointed, of course. If we’d have been able to bat first perhaps we could have posted a score and put them under pressure, but we were without three strike bowlers.” The two sides next play each other at Roffey on the last day of the season, September 1st. Meanwhile, Horsham move up to fourth and entertain current runners up East Grinstead this Saturday, while Roffey remain top – by 5 points – and host Middleton.
