Rotary Club of Horsham’s Funday Sunday another fantastic show martin read

Reporter

Horsham district families and those from much further afield were treated to a wide variety of dance, drama and music activities – and much, much more at the Rotary Club of Horsham’s annual bumper Funday Sunday event in Horsham Park last Sunday. The huge, free entry day out attracted an enormous, enthusiastic crowd revelling in top entertainment in superb high summer weather. Last year the estimated attendance was 12,000 and Sunday’s crowd was thought to have been even bigger, Rotary Club Secretary Dave Smith saying: “Funday Sunday is our biggest event and it was particularly heart-warming to be able to invite families with special needs children to have exclusive use of the funfair – for the entire family - from 10am until noon. Upwards of 1,000 came along to that and it went extremely well. Bensons opened early especially for these families and we are deeply indebted to Mark and Lillian Benson and their staff for giving their time, and the rides, so generously,

which was much appreciated by everyone participating.” Lillian added: “We were very happy to do this and it’s very rewarding for us to give these children 2 hours of fabulous free fun!” With the party in full swing, in addition to the funfair, other activities included Kidz Zone circus arts training, a community stage,

..it was particularly heart-warming to be able to invite families with special needs children to have exclusive use of the funfair including a visit from HAODS in Peter Pan mode, a Kapow wrestling show, a Charity Market with stalls for cakes and many other attractive local products, sports and display arenas, community and business exhibitor stands, Olive Tree massages, a coconut shy, lucky dips and all the fun of the fair, including scrumptious street food and bars dispensing Hepworth’s speciality brews and all manner of summer favourites. Special school project Horsham District Council’s Environmental Health Service with internationally Award Winners Once Again renowned artist Over the past few months, Dr Rachel Gadsden, a British artist who is exhibited internationally and who works across the mainstream and disability art sectors, has been involved in an Arts Society funded project with the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Special School in Horsham, West Sussex. Rachel is Patron of the Arts for the school and has worked with them in the past, notably when some of the students’ work was incorporated into a 3-D installation, which featured in the opening ceremony of the Paralympics in Brazil in 2016. This project, funded by the Horsham branch of the Arts Society, with a contribution from the Patricia Fay Fund, involved eight of the school’s Gifted and Talented students, who met Rachel for a day at The Tate Modern. Under her excellent tutelage, they looked at a variety of different pieces, learned about the artists’ techniques and made numer-

ous sketches. For the following two days back at school, the students worked with Rachel to produce paintings and their own canvases based on their sketches, incorporating self-portraits, and displaying their unique personalities. The culmination of the project was having their work on display in Horsham’s Capitol Theatre’s gallery for two weeks at the beginning of June. Rachel returned to Horsham on June 13 and gave a wellreceived presentation to Arts Society members on her work, and this project. Christine Knight, Young Arts Secretary, said: “The Arts Society Horsham is very proud to have funded this project. Rachel is an extremely talented artist, who, being disabled herself, showed a real affinity with the students. It was a privilege to watch her working with them and then to see their delight when their canvases went on display.”

The Food Safety Team from Horsham District Council’s Environmental Health Department has once again been named Primary Authority of the year. Last month, representatives picked up the award at the Regulatory Excellence Awards event, which was held in London. The accolade is awarded by the Department for Business Energy and Strategy (BEIS) recognising regulatory organisations for achieving positive outcomes through good practice. Horsham were also successful by winning the same award in 2015, for its partnership with the trade association representing retail butchers throughout England. Through the advent of Primary Authority, Horsham has developed recognised expertise in meat and meat products, through its work with organisations such as the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders, and the Guild of Fine Food. This year’s award came as result of the Horsham’s Primary Authority Partnership with the Chichester Biltong Company, who are a well-established Sussex-based business producing biltong jerky. These unique products are processed using specific technical processes. These processes differ from normal recognised food manufacturing

techniques, and use fermentation, drying, preservatives, etc. The robust controls required ensure the product is safe to eat, and rely on scientific evidence which is often difficult to source and understand. Tricia Youtan, Cabinet Member for Community & Wellbeing said: “Winning this prestigious award for a second time is clear recognition of our credible expertise in unique businesses sectors producing artisan meat products. Whilst supporting businesses through Primary Authority, we have, in turn, shared technical expertise and support to other Local Authority Food Safety Teams. This gives them confidence, knowledge, and additional skills, so that they are confident that businesses they enforce are complaint [sic] and safe. “Winning against some notable competition, Horsham are the only Council to have won this award twice. Congratulations to the team and all the hard work that has led to this excellent achievement.” Photo: Peter Baverstock, Environmental Health Officer from Horsham District Council collected the award from Graham Russell MBE, CEO, Office for Product Safety and Standards, Part of Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.

New Athletics Track and Sports Expansion at Christ’s Hospital

Christ’s Hospital (CH) and its associated charity, Bluecoat Sports (BCS), have identified a unique and time limited opportunity to significantly enhance the sporting facilities offered to current and future CH pupils, and to members of the local and wider sporting community. This opportunity to develop a vacant area of the site has been brought about through a major gift pledge from an Old Blue (former CH pupil) and the need for BCS to protect its competitive position. discussions with Horsham District Council about co-sharing the running track. The plan is an ambitious one that will deliver three new major sporting facilities to the CH estate: a six lane synthetic athletics track, a 3G Rugby/Football pitch, new outdoor fitness facilities, and a 55% increase in the indoor fitness facility operated by BCS. The project will create a new, separate public entrance for users of the facility and increased car-parking capacity. A plan-

ning application for the project has recently been submitted to Horsham District Council. Headmaster of Christ’s Hospital, Simon Reid said: “Over the last few years we have been developing our sports facilities, including all-weather sports surfaces and upgraded sports centre, and this will enhance our provisions even further. This will be an outstanding sports facility and one that will be accessible for the whole community to benefit from.”

Local businesses donate 38 fantastic prizes for Funday Continued from front page The Rotary Club of Horsham is part of the Rotary International movement supporting local and global community events. Horsham Rotary is especially active, providing fun and entertainment, and money raised at Funday Sunday will fund their main Making a Difference programme facilitating the provision of small grants – typically less than £500 - to local families and individuals in short term need. Such grants are unencumbered by conditions and, in emergency circumstances, can be supplied quickly, applications usually coming through organisations such as churches and Social Services. Among other activities, the Rotary also support youth programmes, including the opportunity for young people to undertake placements at home and abroad. An important element of the Funday Sunday was the raffle with 38 fantastic prizes donated by many local businesses, to whom the Rotary are especial-

ly grateful, and they also give sincere thanks to Horsham’s residents for their support and to the Funday sponsors – Wakefields Jewellers, Mannings Heath Golf Club, Leonardslee Gardens, Haven/ Isuzu, Brock Taylor, Henfield

Handy tips to be waterwise this summer

Charlotte Owen, Conservation Officer and WildCall advisor gives tips and advise on how to ‘be waterwise’ in the current heatwave: With temperatures rising and a heatwave moving across the UK, demand for water is soaring. Here in Sussex we live in a water stressed region with huge demands on our limited water supply, so it’s vital that we all try and save water whenever possible. Most of our drinking water (70%) comes from natural underground reservoirs, called aquifers, which can take decades or even centuries to refill once they’ve been drained. The rest is pumped from our rivers (23%) or drawn from reservoirs (7%) like Arlington. With more than a million of us living here, our water supply is always overstretched and the more we use, the less there is for wildlife. We each use around 160 litres of

water every day, which might be more than you’d guess. A single bath uses 80 litres, a shower 30 litres and a sprinkler uses 1,000 litres an hour. There are lots of simple ways to be more water efficient and they add up to make a big difference - if we each used one litre less a day, we’d save a massive four million litres in a year. At home: Save a flush – around 30% of water delivered to the home is literally flushed away. Install a free save-a-flush bag to save a litre each time: www.southernwater. co.uk/save-a-flush-form; Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth to save 8,000 litres per year; Chill a jug of tap water in the fridge rather than running the tap until it’s cold; Wash vegetables in a bowl – a running kitchen tap wastes nine litres per minute;

Re-use your washing up water and other ‘grey’ water to give the garden a drink; Wait until you have a full load before using the washing machine or dishwasher – cut down by one wash a week and you’ll save 5,000 litres per year; Use a bucket and sponge to wash the car rather than a hose. In the garden: Let your grass grow longer to capture the morning dew; Install a water butt on as many down-pipes as possible; Apply mulch around plant roots to help hold water in the soil where it’s most needed; Start your own compost heap for a ready supply of mulch; Water your garden in the evening rather than during the heat of the day - this will reduce water lost to evaporation and the plants will have all night to soak it up. The Weald end of year Prom It was a glorious sunny afternoon on Thursday 28 June for year 11 Weald students and their much anticipated end of year prom. Students looked stylish as they started arriving for the event, emerging from a number of classic and creative modes of transport including sports cars, a stretch SUV limousine, a beach buggy and a tank! More than 200 Weald students travelled up to London via coaches that stopped at Blackfriars Pier for everyone to board the Erasmus party boat: a three deck vessel with private London nightclub vibe which cruises along the River Thames and past many of London’s iconic sights. Students and accompanying staff members were greeted with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and a tempting buffet, before dancing the night away until the early hours of Friday morning. For those wanting to chill out and chat, the open top deck of the boat was the place to be on such a warm and picture perfect evening. As always, the students were complimented on their behaviour by the crew and were a credit to the school, who stated: “We wish them the very best of luck in all they decide to pursue in the future, whether they continue into Sixth Form or move on to college or apprenticeships.”

Samaritans are all ears this Summer

Volunteers from Horsham and Crawley Samaritans are getting people listening this summer, and will be at Horsham Station

on Tuesday 24 July. It’s all part of a nationwide push, called The Big Listen, to raise funds for Samaritans and

show how really listening to another person can be the first step to saving a life. A number of volunteers from the local branch will be at the station in Horsham from 7am – 9 am, and then again 5pm – 7pm. The team aims to raise awareness of the importance of helping someone talk through their problems, by really listening to them. The Big Listen activity, up and down the country, will culminate in a marathon 24-hour event, kicking off at midday on 24 July (24/7), chosen to reflect the availability of Samaritans’ emotional support services 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Volunteer, Jacqui Clark, from Samaritans’ branch in Denne Road Horsham said: “As many as 1 in 5 adults have thought about taking their own life at some

point.* When people feel like that, they need to be able to talk about it, which means they need people to listen. “As Samaritans volunteers, we know how much listening to someone at a low point can help them feel less alone. It makes them more able to deal with difficult thoughts and feelings, and gives them the time and space to reflect and move on. “Not everyone will feel ready or able to talk to family, friends or colleagues, but the more we promote what good listening is, and how you encourage others to talk, the more we hope people will open up to someone they trust, before they reach crisis point. With The Big Listen, we’re asking people to give, share and save a life.” Funds raised by The Big Listen

Collyer’s students accompany Spanish visitors to the Houses of Parliament Collyer’s and Horsham were delighted to welcome a group of 12 Spanish students and two teachers, who were on a recent visit to the Ofsted Outstanding college as part of a student exchange programme. The students attend top Spanish school ‘Instituto Cristobal Lozano’ in Hellin, which is close to Alicante on the east coast of Spain. The group started its week in the UK with a visit to The Houses of Parliament in London, where they visited the main historical monuments and had the pleasure of being given a personal tour by Horsham MP Jeremy Quin, who showed them the House of Lords, House of Commons and explained about the voting system. The group also journeyed to Greenwich historical naval monuments, plus the visit to the Observatory in the park, where they enjoyed great views of the O2, Canary Warf and the River Thames. Margarita Mortimer, Subject Leader for Spanish at Collyer’s, was delighted: “We are always pleased to welcome our Spanish exchange students because it’s such a good experience to encourage mutual understanding and respect to each other’s cultures. “Sincere thanks to Mr. Quin for his time and attention given to all students. They really liked him and we were all impressed with his kindness.” Mari Carmen Melgarejo, accompanying teacher for the Spanish students, said: “This fabulous experience provides a better understanding of customs, history and culture, so it is a good way to elaborate a modern European citizenship.”

Milagros Herguedas, who teaches Spanish at Collyer’s, added: “It’s such a good opportunity for these students from Spain to experience life in England, as well as practise their language skills. The Collyer’s students and their families have been very accommodating and visiting Horsham, London and Brighton was a fantastic experience for all of us.” In addition to trips and visits, the students also spent valuable time attending lessons with their English hosts in a variety of subjects, and took part in some busy and entertaining classroom workshops, with a particular focus on language and culture. Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley, said: “It has been a pleasure to welcome these students, they are an absolute credit to their school, Hellin and Spain! “The exchange is an incredibly important part of learning about language and culture for the Collyer’s and Instituto Cristobal Lozano students and I’m very happy that everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the visit.” Collyer’s Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, said: “Massive thanks to Jeremy Quinn for taking time out from his hectic schedule to welcome these students to the Houses of Parliament. Jeremy has been a huge supporter of Collyer’s over the years and he genuinely cares about the next generation.” Collyer’s Assistant Principal, Andrea John, said: “Big thanks to Margarita and all of the teachers for making this wonderful experience possible for all of these young people. This has undoubtedly been a great learning opportunity!”

Tick all the boxes this summer Horsham Riverside Walk to protect against Lyme disease

With long summer days now upon us, West Sussex County Council is urging families to tick one more job off their lists to protect against Lyme disease. As more and more families look to make the most of our beautiful countryside and the warmer summer weather, the county council is keen for residents to protect themselves against the risk of tick bites. Ticks can transmit bacteria that cause diseases such as Lyme disease. Although not all tick bites result in the disease, it is important to know how to avoid tick bites and to take action if you or your family get bitten. Ticks mainly attach themselves

to animals, but sometimes they may bite you or your family. Amanda Jupp, the county council’s cabinet member for adults and health, said: “It is important to be tick aware and to remember that you could be exposed to ticks whenever you spend time outdoors, whether in your garden, local park or the countryside. “You can prevent tick bites by walking on clearly defined paths, using insect repellent, and making regular tick checks.” Kayleigh Hansford, vectorborne disease scientist at Public Health England, said: “When enjoying the outdoors, we encourage you to be aware of what ticks are, where they are found, and how

to remove them safely in order to protect yourself from tick-borne diseases. Carrying out a tick check involves looking and feeling for ticks that might be on your body. “It is important to remove ticks promptly and safely, using a tick removal tool. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upwards slowly and firmly, as mouthparts left in the skin can cause local infection. Clean the bite area and monitor it for several weeks for any changes. “If you feel unwell with flu-like symptoms, or develop a spreading circular red rash after being bitten or spending time outdoors, you should visit your GP or call NHS 111 promptly. Remember to tell them where you have been and if you were bitten.” Public Health England has produced a factsheet which has details about the health risks of tick bites, how to check your skin for ticks, remove a tick and how to prevent being bitten. For more information, please visit: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/tick-biterisks-and-prevention-of-lymedisease or https://www.nhs.uk/ conditions/insect-bites-andstings/

Local charity, Springboard, is set to benefit from this year’s Horsham Riverside Walk tomorrow (Saturday 14 July). Walkers are being asked if they would like to find sponsorship from family and friends to raise funds for Springboard, which welcomes children and young people (with or without disabilities), and their families, for inclusive play and social opportunities. Tomfoolery, well-known children’s entertainer and long-time supporter of Springboard, will use a loud air-horn to start the event at 10 am from the Rugby Club car park in Hammerpond Road. Trained leaders and marshals will accompany the walkers, and first aid cover will also be provided. The weather forecast for

the day is said to be sunny, but not too hot, which will aid all walkers - especially those aiming to complete the 13mile route. As in previous walks, lunch will be taken at Warnham Nature Reserve, with the afternoon break at New House Farm café. A free minibus will be on hand to collect any tired walkers from selected sites and return them to their cars. Earlier this year, Horsham Town Community Partnership (HTCP) obtained grants and managed the work on two popular paths along the route. There is now a smoother, wider 400 metre length near Redford Avenue, and a much improved shorter section between Sandeman Way and Brighton Road. Entry to the Walk is free and further information can be found online at: www. horsham.community or www. facebook.com/horshamcommunity or by phone: 07780 701184. For catering purposes, the organisers, HTCP, are asking walkers to register beforehand, by email: horshamriversidewalk@gmail.com or phone: 07780 701184.

Chillish® range, Garllish® is wonderfully unique and made in Sussex. The sweet flavourful mixture of crushed roasted garlic, caramelised shallots and subtle spices is blended perfectly with a delicate oil to craft this rich and

very garlicy 2 in 1 condiment. Pollyanna Hutchinson, the creator of Garlish® said “Working with Crates is always a real pleasure and to be able to hold the Horsham tasting launch event with them is amazing. The initial responses to Garlish® have been fantastic and with further products planned for later in the year; this is a very exciting time for Pollyanna’s Kitchen” She continued “Garlish® is totally versatile and all about Garlic. The oil and garlic crush may be used separately, or you can shake the jar to combine the two, to add a subtle or real garlicy kick. For those that really savour the taste of garlic, Garlish® works well on meats and vegetables, in salads or as a dip and will always add a unique culinary twist to your meal.” Pollyanna has also ensured that it is Vegetarian and Vegan with no preservatives and no added nasties to maintain its exclusive ‘homemade’ taste. And only locally sourced Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil is used to ensure its safe to cook with at high temperatures, such as BBQ’s or stir frys. Garlish® may be purchased from Crates Local, many local farm shops and delicatessens, or you may place an order online at www.pollyannaskitchen.co.uk

Local company helps Halnaker windmill sweep back on to West Sussex landscape Work to restore a West Sussex landmark is nearing completion after its four 15ft sails were hoisted into position this week. The sails – known locally as sweeps, were put back in their rightful place on Halnaker Windmill to return the Grade II listed building to its former glory. Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “This historic monument is much loved by residents across West Sussex, and we know people have been patiently waiting for the windmill to be returned to its original state. “A lot of hard work and effort has gone into the restoration of the windmill and this could not have been achieved without the dedicated work of council staff, and local contractors. “With the whole building being brought back from the brink, over the past five years, I cannot wait for new generations to enjoy Halnaker Windmill - as so many have done before.” Work has been ongoing at the site since 2013, when the windmill was fenced off for safety reasons, and a number of other issues with the building were discovered. In 2017, phase one of the restoration came to a close when the tile hung façade (consisting of approximately 14,000 hand crafted tiles) was completed

by Fowler Building Contractors from Cowfold, and supported by a consultant from Brodie Plant Goddard based in Dorking. The next stage of development, if planning approval is gained, is to install a door and metal fencing around the building. The council has been working with RB Construction Group Ltd in Burgess Hill to restore and reinstate the sweeps. Jeremy Hunt, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said: “I am delighted that we have finally been able to re-fit the sails to the recently restored Halnaker Windmill. This iconic Sussex landmark can once again be seen for miles around in its full glory. “This is a project I have championed for a number of years and I would like to thank our team at West Sussex County Council, as well as all the contractors involved in the restoration, who have worked so hard to bring this project to fruition. “There are still some finishing touches, such as some railings to be completed, but the windmill can once again take pride of place, situated high on the South Downs.” You can find out more about the building and the site by visiting www.westsussex.gov. uk and searching ‘Halnaker Windmill’.

Favour, in the form of a ring or some other royal token. Every child that enters will receive a royal token from the Queen in the form of a royal rosette and the winning boy and girl will each receive a magnificent trophy in addition to a winning rosette and medal. On the last Sunday of The Loxwood Joust, Queen Georgiana of Loxwood will also be holding a Royal Costume Contest for adults with the both the lady and gentleman winners being presented with a huge trophy plus £25 prize money each. Lastly to complete all things royal at this year’s festival, the Queen’s ladies will be providing daily instruction on ‘TheDressing of a Medieval Queen’, where visitors will see exactly how a Queen would have been dressed in mediaeval times. However, in the 15th Century it would have taken up to two hours to complete, but the time taken in the Loxwood Meadows will be considerably reduced, as royal decree states that a Queen should not be seen bathing in public! Horsham Garden Music Festival 2018

By Jenny Myers: Chairman It’s going to be a fun and exciting opening weekend of Horsham Garden Music Festival 2018! The charity’s ethos is Whole Community Music with a focus on providing a platform for local young performers, community groups and amateur and semiprofessional musicians to perform. We have some wonderfully talented and entertaining artists in the area. The venue is always the beautiful Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park, hence the name of our charity. Once again, all our afternoon concerts are free so that anyone can come and enjoy the music. For our opening concert on Saturday 14 July, we have collaborated with Horsham Folk Club to bring three first class acts to Horsham for your entertainment, as well as the club’s own excellent band which will be first on stage at 1pm. Hatful of Rain, a British contemporary folk group from the south coast of Sussex, follows at 2pm. They combine powerful song writing with musical flare, inspired by English, Celtic and American Roots styles. They use a single microphone approach when performing, which creates an intimate and engaging atmosphere characteristic of every Hatful show. Next, it’s Brighton-based folk duo Hickory Signals, who combine strong, female vocal melodies with vibrant guitar, shruti, flute, and pulsing percussion, performing both original and traditional material. Live, they have been described as enthralling, spellbinding and absorbing. Finishing the day is the Vera van Heeringen Trio at 4pm. Vera is a consummate guitarist; highly acclaimed by her contemporaries, she brings the instrument to life in way that is entirely her own. Vera also writes tunes and songs which deliver straight to - and from - the heart. Firmly rooted in Transatlantic traditions, her original contem-

porary Americana showcases both these skills: firebrand instrumental virtuosity and poignant, emotionally astute song writing. There will also be Morris dancing interspersing the musical performances during the afternoon. A change of style will come on the Saturday evening with the hugely popular The Almost Elvis Band rocking the joint! Advance tickets are priced at £9.00 for adults and £6 for 5 to 13-year olds, plus a small booking fee. (Under 5s are free.) You can get them from www.sussexeventtickets.com or by ringing 01403 888005. On the gate prices will be £11.00 for adults and £7.50 for children. On Sunday 15 July, you’ll feel like you’re in the Caribbean with the glorious weather and our carnivalthemed concert. A drumming workshop will take place before our first act, so make sure you arrive early if you’d like to join in with this! Bernardi Music Group’s String Academy, made up of gifted and talented young musicians from Sussex and Surrey, will open the show. Next, we have local group Boom Tribe giving us some samba rhythms. Mr G and the Bluebeats will be up next, great musicians who performed an excellent set for us last year. We are delighted to welcome Haywards Heath Concert Band for the first time. Some of their band members live in and around Horsham and asked to perform at the festival way back in June last year! They will be performing two sets, one by their swing section and one by their brass section. Euphoria Steel Band returns to the festival, led by the extremely talented Rachel Hayward and bringing their wonderful sounds from Brighton to Horsham. Perfect for our carnival theme! To finish the day, we will be screening the World Cup Final so that our performers and audience don’t miss the big event! Many

thanks to Wells Independent Property Broker, our main sponsor of this concert, for arranging this. Keeping you nourished throughout the festival, local restaurant and deli business, Carmela’s, will be providing a barbecue and savoury food and JubyLee Bakes returns to sell their delicious cakes and cookies. Southern Counties Ice Cream will also be on hand to help cool you down through the warm afternoons. Plus, TruSandArt and Great Faces will be on site providing activities for children. For health and safety reasons, there are a couple of changes this year: There will be toilets in the garden for your convenience. Please don’t bring your own alcohol or glass bottles to the festival. We will have a bar selling a huge selection of drinks including Hepworth’s beer and a selection of cider, wine, spirits and soft drinks. A reminder that dogs, barbecues and ball games are not allowed in the Human Nature Garden. Whilst no waterproofs will be needed this weekend, you may wish to bring umbrellas or parasols to provide some shade in the Human Nature Garden’s lovely amphitheatre. This year, grant funding has been gratefully received from Humphrey Richardson Taylor Charitable Trust, Gatwick Airport Community Trust, Tesco Bags of Help and West Sussex County Council. Horsham Garden Music Festival also relies on sponsorship and donations to our licenced bucket collections to put on this event. Cala Homes hosts interiors weekend

Award winning CALA Homes are holding a Home Interiors Weekend at their exclusive Amlets Place development in Cranleigh on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th July to showcase the latest trends and help prospective buyers see how they can style their dream new home. Interested purchasers will have the opportunity to meet the friendly CALA sales team and learn more about the fantastic range of properties available. For all reservations made over the weekend, purchasers will be entitled to a spectacular £10,000 towards curtains and light fittings* from local store Manns of Cranleigh, whose curtain designer will be available in the showhome to offer advice from 11am to 3pm on both days. Visitors will also be able to take a tour of the stunning Plot 17 Hambledon house type, priced at £725,000. This spacious threebedroom detached home is newly furnished and comes complete with fitted carpets, Amtico wet areas and turf to the rear garden, and

is ready to occupy straight away. The well-equipped kitchen/breakfast/family room benefits from French doors to the patio area plus a separate utility room, while the elegant bay-fronted sitting room is complemented by a private study and cloakroom across the hall. And the flexible design continues upstairs, where the luxurious family bathroom is joined by three good-sized bedrooms, with two also benefiting from an en suite and fitted wardrobes for added comfort. The high quality development, on Amlets Lane, has been extremely popular with house hunters to date thanks to its thoughtfully designed layout in keeping with its idyllic countryside setting, all within walking distance of Cranleigh village centre. Those visiting over the weekend will experience the relaxed community atmosphere being created here, with plenty of green space, trees and beautiful landscaping surrounding the homes. Once complete, the development will

also benefit from a fully equipped children’s play area, beautiful orchard and allotment plots. Nicki Dennis, sales and marketing director for CALA Homes (South Home Counties), comments: “Proudly known as England’s largest village, Cranleigh is one of Surrey’s most aspirational villages, offering a tranquil countryside setting with all the amenities you need right on your doorstep. We’re pleased to have partnered with a fantastic local business, Manns of Cranleigh, to showcase how to perfectly dress these stunning new homes. “This really is an exceptional development, which we are extremely proud of and needs to be viewed to be fully appreciated. With homes reserving fast and selected plots available for a summer move, we would encourage interested purchasers to come along and see us on the 14th and 15th July to avoid disappointment.” The popular development won its first award in June, after site manager Rob Green picked up a

2018 NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Award in recognition of his work at Amlets Place. Pride in the Job celebrates the exceptional contribution site managers make in creating homes of outstanding quality. Mr Green is one of 11 CALA site managers to win one of this year’s awards. He will now go through to the next stage of the competition, the Seal of Excellence Awards, which will be announced in the autumn. Cranleigh offers good local and secondary state education, as well as the renowned independent Cranleigh School. The village provides a good base for commuters, with Guildford just 10 miles away, providing direct access into London Waterloo and Clapham Junction. Direct services are also available from Horsham and Dorking to London Victoria and London Bridge. Cranleigh village itself has a strong sense of community, with many family run businesses and independent stores mixing with well-known shops and restaurants. If you enjoy being in the great outdoors, then take the family for a stroll to Pitch Hill or Leith Hill - both natural beauty spots offering hours of walking with stunning views. For the more energetic, there’s a whole range of local sports facilities available. From the exclusive Cranleigh Golf and Country Club, to the village’s large leisure centre, Snoxhall Play Park and Cranleigh Cricket Club - whatever leisure pursuits take your fancy, this beautiful and fascinating area will spoil you for choice all-yearround. For further information on Amlets Place, visit the marketing suite and showhomes which are open daily from 10am to 5pm. Alternatively contact CALA Homes’s appointed selling agency, Simply New Homes from Henry Adams on 01243 521833 or visit simplynewhomes.com.

Volunteering Opportunities Registered Charity No. 1158780 Please note that from April 1, 2018 as a result of funding changes from Horsham District Council HAMSVA will no longer be promoting volunteering in the district. For all volunteering opportunities after that date please visit www.horsham.gov.uk/communitysupport/ community-support/community-development/voluntary-sector-support . Would you like to gain some valuable work experience or offer your valuable experience to your local NHS? Horsham Hospital is looking for volunteer administrators. Duties will include helping the administrator with filing patient notes, Making up files for new patients, archiving - filling out forms on the computer stating what is added to the archiving boxes, photocopying paperwork for the nurses to use with patients The minimum commitment for this role is six months after training. No qualifications are required except to be friendly yet professional and happy to work in a possibly noisy environment with children. The hospital also needs administrators to take on a similar role with its wheelchair service and with health visitors, where you would be making up health promotion packs for clinical staff to take to visits, photocopying and updating booklets. If you prefer the great outdoors, how would you like to help preserve the beautiful countryside we enjoy in Sussex? The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) Sussex is looking for volunteers across the county to help preserve its beauty. They need a planning assistant to help monitor planning applications in the local area, identifying applications of concern and helping the local team to submit relevant comments and objections. The charity is also looking for general volunteers to work on a wide range of activities, including fund-raising, biodiversity, campaigning, social media, general administration, etc. if you have a specific interest or expertise that might be applicable to their work in protecting the Sussex countryside they would love to hear from you. Winston’s Wish is a charity which supports children who have been bereaved by the death of a parent. They need volunteer fund raisers to support at their events in the Southeast Some things you might do are to meet and greet participants and spectators, help set up and clear down the event, provide information at a Winston’s Wish event stand, answering queries and hand out refreshments or even wear the famous Winston Bear costume! AGE UK Horsham is looking for volunteers to help people coming home from hospital who may feel lonely and isolated and who would benefit greatly from practical and emotional support and confidence building. The NSPCC is looking for volunteers to help with a bucket collection at the Horsham Tesco on Wickhurst Lane on Friday 23 March – even just a couple of hours of your time would be hugely appreciated. Your support and the money raised could help fund the NSPCC’s Speak out Stay safe programme, which delivers age-appropriate workshops and assemblies to children aged 5-11 about how to recognise the signs of abuse and to understand where to go if they need help. If you want to know more about the opportunities above or are thinking of volunteering and want to know what’s out there, just log on to www.hamsva.org.uk/opportunities and explore the many ways in which you can get involved in your community.

Local ladies enjoy second festival Shelley bike ride

Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter On the 196th anniversary of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley’s death an enthusiastic group of ladies set off on the second local memorial Shelley cycle ride. Major English Romantic poet Shelley, was born at Field Place, Broadbridge Heath, his unconventional ideas becoming increasingly influential after his untimely drowning at the age of just 29. The group departed from Horsham’s Forum sundial, for the easy 6km ride, finishing for refreshments at Warnham Nature Reserve, Thea Bredie-Turnbull explaining that the dual aim of the ride – ladies only because it is part of Cycling UK’s “Women’s Festival of Cycling” – is both to celebrate Shelley and to encourage more women to experience the friendship, fun and freedom that cycling can provide, getting to know a bit more of Shelley’s life and work along the way, Thea saying: “Cycling is growing in popularity for all manner of reasons and we hope that, before too long, the Shelley ride can be safely extended into Warnham,

where Shelley was born and attended his first school.” Perfect spots for some of Shelley’s nature poetry readings were selected en route, the pond at Warnham Nature Reserve being a favourite haunt of the young Shelley, where he learned to sail. His father was the local MP and his mother a landowner, but Eton-educated Shelley set aside his aristocratic upbringing, espousing radical views, resulting in his expulsion from Oxford University because of a pamphlet on atheism, which he refused to withdraw. His ideas subsequently went on to enthuse a wide range of free thinkers including Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Ghandi, and, perhaps because of Shelley’s social opinions and theories on non violent protests, Jeremy Corbyn. Thea Bredie-Turnbull adding, about her fascination with the poet: “Shelley had a reputation for controversy – he and his partners were doing the ‘60s in the 1800s, way ahead of their time. He had a tragic and dramatic falling out with his father, his vegetarianism, his stance against slavery, and, despite his atheism, his interest in Jesus, his concern for the poor,

his generosity – although he had continuous money problems – his controversial attitude to women, his love of water, but failure to learn to swim – there is no end to the interesting paradoxes in his life! Cycling is peaceful, enjoyable, promotes good health and clean air – enabling ordinary citizens, including women and children, to take to their bikes and travel at will, in safety, to wherever they want would be approved of and supported by Shelley if he were alive today. I am pleased and grateful to Horsham District Council for promoting additional health rides for the first time this year.” Details of those five forthcoming gentle and not too demanding free social rides for starter-level cyclists, are available at https://hdsd.org.uk/InclusiveActivities/horsham-districthealth-rides, HDC saying: “You don’t need to be an Olympian, just in possession of a working bicycle with the ability to ride. All rides will be led by experienced volunteer ride leaders. There will be a choice of two regular routes, including a 6km Shelley route and a longer two to three hour ride along the Downs Link.”

Pedal away with Horsham Cycling! Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last Thursday a group of intrepid cyclists – Horsham Cycling Companions – supported by Horsham brewery Chapeau, departed from Horsham en route for Noirmoutier-enl’lle, to take in the opening stages of the Tour de France. Noirmoutier is just off the coast in the Pays de Loire region in western France, Chris Holmes telling the District Post: “After the train to Portsmouth and ferry to St Malo our party of six are pedalling around 150 miles in two days to see the watch the Tour, staying in gites and B&Bs along the way. We’re taking some of Chapeau’s trademark Tour beers with us, especially their Summer Flamme Rouge, which we’re particularly looking forward to seeing next to the Flamme Rouge itself!” Katherine at Chapeau says: “The brewery has grown out of a love of beer and an obsession with cycling. Having lived and worked in Alpe d’Huez for several years it was impossible for the cycling bug not to creep under our skin and to be able to combine this with beer, seemed only natural for our brewery. Michael, has spent 20 years working as a chef and brings

an excellent understanding of flavour to his brewing and relishes swapping his chef’s apron for a brewer’s one. We named the brewery Chapeau as it is a cycling term meaning ‘hats off to you’. We are happy to sponsor the group’s cycling jerseys because this abmbitious cycling adventure perfectly encapsulates what Chapeau Brewing loves and we’re very proud to be involved, hopefully encouraging more people to get out an their bikes in Horsham. Michael and I may be pretty average cyclists, but we know what we want to be drinking at the end of a ride - we’ve developed our beers based on what we like to drink ourselves and hope you’ll enjoy drinking them too!” British racing cyclist Chris Froome is one of the most successful riders in the history of the Tour de France and will be looking to add another win to his four previous victories. The progress of the Horsham Cycling Companions trip can be followed via @chapeaubrewing on Facebook and on Twitter and Instagram, too. Chapeau will be celebrating the group’s return at their Redkiln Close taproom, which is open to the public on Friday’s from noon8pm and on Saturdays from 10am to noon.

Broadbridge Heath triumph at Chesworth Tournament Broadbridge Heath current under 13’s Sunday team supported local club Chesworth Rovers annual tournament held at Forest Boys school. A well organised and friendly tournament with a league format of six teams all playing each other. Two teams that finished top and runners up played a final to see who were champions. Broadbridge Heath had no goalkeeper on the day so an outfield player Toby Alexander volunteered to go in goal for the day. The squad rotated game after game and did not concede a goal through the whole tournament. Scoring over 15 goals in the league with every outfield player scoring and winning 2-0 in the final shows what level the under 13’s Sunday

side are at. Playing last season in the very competitive and physical Sussex Sunday League. The team narrowly missed promotion to Division 1 last season loosing a play off for promotion 4-3.We would like to invite players to attend our training sessions for next season’s under 14’s squad. A competitive nature, desire to develop as a player, commitment and a good team ethic are required. Goalkeeper, defender and striker positions currently available to compliment an already talented group of players. Also looking for assistant manager to help in the weekly running of the team. Strong win increases Roffey’s lead at top of league table Saturday July 7 – Sussex Premier League Middleton 233 all out (49.5 overs) - Roffey 237-2 (43 overs) Roffey won by 8 wickets – Roffey 30 points – Middleton 11 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter After a draw against Eastbourne and a loss at Horsham, Roffey re-booted their bid to regain the Premier League title with a thumping win against Middleton at the beginning of the second half of the season. Roffey put Middleton in and after they had got off to a brisk start, Stuart Whittingham had both openers caught behind by Matt Davies, before going on to take two more wickets, interspersed with a scalp for Leigh Harrison. Alex Collins then picked up three cheap dismissals and at 122-8 Middleton were on the ropes. But, Mahesh Rawat – a perpetual thorn in the flesh of Premier League bowlers – batted on to yet another unbeaten century, a chanceless one, his fourth in the last five games. With 41 first class matches under his belt, Rawat played for Pune Warriors in the IPL and was the leading run scorer in last season’s Surrey Championship with 880 runs for Ashstead.

Sport

got a story? email us at sport@thedistrictpost.co.uk

So far this season he has 769 runs for Middleton, more than a third of their team aggregate. Batting for 160 minutes, with 20 fours and a six he was immovable, but, back bowling again after a prolonged shoulder injury, Ben Manenti finally broke the obdurate 111 run ninth wicket partnership and then removed Middleton’s number eleven first ball. On Roffey’s good batting wicket and hard, fast outfield Middleton’s 233 was around 60 short. And, although Roffey were soon 13-1, Manenti was putting away any loose ball, punishing Middleton for, shockingly, dropping him off a routine skier to the keeper. At the World Cup football break, Roffey were 43-1, with Coach Simon Fearnley saying: “If we can get through ten overs unscathed after the re-start then we should be able to win at a canter.” Manenti departed for a run-a-ball 50, but that was the final success for Middleton, Jibran Khan and Rohit Jagota plundering the non-penetrative bowling, Rawat foregoing the keeper’s gloves to enable him to bowl, but to no avail. Khan has been batting well consistently, and richly deserved his 100 not out, completed with two boundaries to win the match. Throughout their unbroken 170 run partnership he had been matched, run for run by

Jagota, whose 10 fours and 3 sixes made the result look inevitable, confirmed by Khan’s final flurry. Which of them would get to a century first was the only question asked of Roffey’s batting. The win – a double over Middleton this season - increases Roffey’s lead at the top of the table to 27 points, Matt Davies telling the District Post: “Great to get back on the winning trail after two disappointing weeks!” Simon Fearnley added: “That was a crushing win – good to have Ben (Manenti) bowling again and next week Barney (Luke Barnard) should be returning from injury.” And, talking after his elusive hundred, Jibran Khan modestly said: “This was a great wicket and the outfield was so fast”, Rohit commenting: “I like batting with Jib, he rotates the strike so well!” At West Chiltington Matt Bidlake had an outstanding game for Roffey 2nds – with 115 batting at eight, followed by 6-55 in Roffey’s six run win. This weekend Roffey have two big games – on Saturday they travel to Saint Hill to take on reigning champions East Grinstead, currently third. Then on Sunday in the national stage of the ECB National Club Championship, they host Chingford from the Essex top flight (1pm start)

Premier League round up Saturday July 7 - Sussex Premier League Round up Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter All five Premier League matches resulted in wins for the home side last Saturday. With Horsham and Roffey’s games reported on separately, at Brighton & Hove’s Nevill Sports Ground, after declaring on 257-7 (Steven Crosby 86 not out), the hosts snatched an unlikely win. Sam Whiteman had returned to form with 87 and Cuckfield were 230-4 with overs in hand and the game in their pocket – until Matt Machan and Simon Hetherton, who finished with four wickets apiece, ran through the tail. Four ducks left Chris Mole stranded on 51 not out, enabling cock-a-hoop Brighton to win by 1 run.

Tom Johnson sets up big Horsham win

Photo by Clive Turner Saturday July 7 - Sussex Premier League Horsham 324-5 (58 0vers) – East Grinstead 196 all out (48.2 overs) Horsham won by 128 runs - Horsham 30 points – East Grinstead 7 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was an excellent, comprehensive win for Horsham against the reigning league champions. Winning the toss, Horsham took first strike with a 10am start to facilitate viewing of England’s World Cup Quarter Final victory. On another glorious day for batting, after losing Tom Clark early, Tom Johnson and skipper Michael Thorney proceeded to bat East Grinstead out of the

game with a 195 run second wicket stand. Johnson’s 124 was particularly impressive with 19 fours and three sixes, Grinstead paying a heavy price for dropping him at mid on when he was on 35. He has often entertained with brutal quick-fire cameos, but this was a proper opener’s innings, defending where appropriate and taking full opportunity to cash in on any run scoring opportunity with a full range of strokes. 5 fours came off a Lewis Hatchett over as Johnson pressed on relentlessly in fruitful partnership with Thornely (69) and although both were out in quick succession, followed by another wicket, Joe Ashmore with 40 not out, and 41 from 19 year old Alex Bone on debut, aided by Paul Williams, enabled Horsham to post a 325

run target, by far the biggest requirement in last Saturday’s round of Premier League matches. Hatchett and Ian Sturmer took two wickets apiece, but it was a toiling day for them, Tom Johnson telling us: “That was a wonderful deck to bat on, so true, I just knew what the ball was going to do, but in the end I was tired out – it was so very hot out there!” Replying, seven of Grinstead’s first eight batsmen made double figures, and at 113-2 a good platform had been built, but only Fynn Hudson-Prentice passed 40. Horsham spinners Joe Ashmore and Nick Oxley held the key, subsequent wickets falling regularly as the pair steadily worked their way through Grinstead’s competent line up, Ashmore finishing with 4-47 and Oxley 3-64, Ashmore saying: “The wicket was dry and Nick and I were able to use that.” Michael Thornely told the District Post: “Tom’s double hundred for the seconds has boosted his confidence and he was a different player today. When they batted, Hudson-Prentice and Leo Cammish was the partnership to break and Joe got them both – he bowled beautifully with Nick and we were good in the field. We’re in the middle of a tough run of fixtures, but we’re on a roll now.” Horsham remain fourth – on level points, 213, with East Grinstead (third) and just two behind second-placed Brighton and Hove. Roffey are top with 242. On Saturday Horsham visit struggling Preston Nomads.

Scan me!

Eastbourne posted 259-6 at the Saffrons, Ben Twine scoring 101, then Preston Nomads were then bowled out for 170 with more than 16 overs unused. Six Nomads’ batsmen got to double figures but nobody reached 50, Jacob Smith taking 6-58 to give Eastbourne an 89 run win. At Horntye Park Hastings & St Leonard’s Priory declared on 240-9, Jake Woolley top-scoring with 60 and Dan Smith taking 4-63. But, although six batsmen got starts, nobody progressed beyond Paul Clifford’s 39 and Ifield’s fragile batting could only muster 153 in the face of Elliot Hooper’s 5-63, Hastings winning by 87 runs. Brighton cling on to the runners up spot, but Ifield are bottom with 102 points, ten behind penultimate club Hastings, while Eastbourne are fifth, Nomads sixth and Cuckfield seventh.
