Sponsor a Gruffalo and be a part of a global phenomenon To celebrate the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 patron, the children’s author Julia Donaldson MBE, writer of The Gruffalo, organisers will be sending 20 Gruffalo soft toys on a worldwide journey during 2019 – but they need human help. The 20 Gruffalo toys, each individually identifiable by their bespoke labels, will set off on their journey in January 2019; but for them to get going, each one will need a sponsor. So far, eight have been sponsored, which leaves just 12 waiting. The premise of Global Gruffalo is straightforward – receive the Gruffalo, take a photo of yourself and the toy and upload to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram via @GlobalGruffalo, or using the #GlobalGruffalo, saying where you are in the world, then pass him on to someone else to do the same – with the aim to get all of them home to Horsham for December 2019, to be part of an exhibition at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens during 2020. For a bit more fun, you can also visit the Global Gruffalo website, where you can fill in a postcard

with some more information and view a map where you’ll be able to see where your Gruffalo has been and where others are visiting. Jon Salmon and Crawford Butler will travel to Europe for The Royal British Legion’s Great Pilgrimage 90 5-9th August 2018 Members of the Horsham branch of The Royal British Legion are to join thousands on a pilgrimage of Remembrance to World War One battlefield, that culminates in a parade and ceremony in Ypres, as part of the end of the First World War centenary commemorations this August.

The Royal British Legion event, known as Great Pilgrimage 90 (GP90), takes place between August 5 and 9, and will be one of the largest in the charity’s history. GP90 will mark 90 years since the original Royal British Legion Pilgrimage in 1928, which saw 11,000 World War One veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended.

That Pilgrimage culminated in a march through Ypres to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s Menin Gate Memorial for a ceremony to commemorate the launch of The Hundred Days Offensive, and in remembrance of those who never returned. Local Legion members, Jon Salmon and Crawford Butler will represent the Horsham Branch and the local community at the event, as Standard Bearer and wreath layer respectively. Jon and Crawford will tour some of the same battlefields and cemeteries visited by those on the 1928 Pilgrimage, before marching along the original route through Ypres, to the Menin Gate on August 8, bearing their branch standard and a wreath. They will join more than 2,200 other Legion representatives and dignitaries, including Civic and military guests from the UK, Commonwealth, and Northern Europe, who are taking part. Once at the Menin Gate, Crawford will lay a wreath on behalf of the Horsham community. Eve White, Secretary of the Horsham Branch of The Royal British Legion, commented: “Great Pilgrimage 90 is a unique opportunity for the Legion community to come together and bear our Standards along the same route in Ypres taken 90 years earlier by the veterans and widows of the First World War. Our branch looks forward to proudly representing Horsham District at the event.” As local champions of Remembrance, the Horsham Branch of The Royal British Legion is looking to work in partnership with their community to bring their unique Remembrance message to the Menin Gate, on their wreath, where it will be displayed in a wreath installation for viewing by the general public until the end of August. Fun children’s town sticker trail launched for school summer holidays Hot on the heels of Horsham District Council’s popular ‘Townies and Parkies‘ children’s trails, a new Horsham Town Centre Sticker Trail is set to launch this Friday (20 July) just in time for the school summer holidays. The initial children’s trails which launched during the May Half Term featured a series of animal characters which decorate the town’s new illustrative panelling in the walk way linking the town centre with Horsham Park at Albion Way and the new Sticker Trail will build on these characters. This free sticker trail activity has once again been organised by Horsham District Council with the cooperation of local businesses to support trade in the town centre. Twelve family friendly town centre locations are offering children the opportunity to collect one of 12 animal character stickers that go to fill up a sticker card which can be collected from Waterstones Bookshop in the Carfax. Once the cards have been filled with all twelve stickers, a tear off section can be handed in at Mr Simms sweet shop for an opportunity to win one of a number of prizes donated by the participating locations. The town centre trail runs from Friday 20 July to Sunday 2 September or when cards and stickers run out, if sooner. Prize winners will be notified in the week commencing 3 September. Also launching on the 20 July is an exciting Townies and Parkies story writing competition for children aged 5 to 13 years. Horsham residents invited to star in Metrobus ad campaign 7

Metrobus has invited four local residents to take a starring role in an advertising campaign that celebrates everyday life in Horsham. Running over the summer, the ‘Horsham to Me’ campaign highlights why people love living in this popular area and reminds them of the great things to do, right on their doorstep. Martin Harris, Metrobus managing director, said: “People who live in Horsham are rightly proud of where they live and Metrobus is pleased to play its part in connecting the community to its favourite places. Inviting local people to star in the adverts felt like the natural approach to take, and we couldn’t be happier with the results.” The four models are: Jodie Munday, musician and events promoter at Manic Mundays. Enchanted Horsham’s Dragon Detectorists share knowledge with Kingslea Primary School

Enchanted Horsham delighted the year 4 pupils at Kingslea Primary school when they visited to share their dragon secrets and hear about their wonderful dragon ideas. Taking with them the dragon eggs that will be used to lure the mystical beasts to the event on the 27th, 28th and 29th July, the dragon detectorists asked the pupils to imagine what noises a

baby dragon would make inside the egg, and what noises would lure a dragon to the eggs. The pupils eagerly suggested a wide range of ideas including snoring and just breathing for the babies in the egg, through to a baby in danger, something to eat for dinner and a mate to tempt the dragons in. Having seen a BBC documentary on dragons earlier in the year and

listening to the Enchanted Horsham’s team, a pupil from year 4 said “The dragon topic is really fun and finding out that they were properly real was a very big shock. The most fascinating thing for me is how their scales move according to how their bodies move.” The pupils have been learning about dragons as part of their school topic all year and were keen

to impart their knowledge to Enchanted Horsham’s dragon team. The classes had made their own dragons and dragon traps, and they suggested a wide variety of objects that would work best as bait; such as treasure, animal carcasses, anything shiny, a baby or female dragon and platinum. Somewhat surprised, Enchanted’s intrigued dragonologists asked why would you use platinum, and were informed that a dragon needs platinum to make his fire. The children explained that a dragon will crunch up the platinum into bits and when it mixes with the hydrogen and oxygen gasses in its stomach it combusts and makes the fire for the dragon to breathe. Robin Morley, director of Enchanted Horsham said ‘The children were really amazing. Their interest in the subject and their keenness to show their knowledge of all things dragon was a real treat for us. We learnt some excellent dragon facts from them, and are looking forward to including some of their superb drawings in our light projections on to Park House. ” Enchanted Horsham’s summer extravaganza of theatre, entertainment, food, drink, fashion and music is set to really wow the whole family. Trading Standards warns of airline allergen advice West Sussex Trading Standards has contacted airlines flying out of Gatwick to remind them of their obligations under EU allergen rules after a number of concerns were raised by passengers. If airlines take on meals in the EU, then the food supplied in flight has to meet EU requirements on allergen information. This means the crew must know what allergens are in the food and this information must be passed on to passengers, either through the menu or verbally in response to a question. Peter Aston, West Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Manager, said: “Setting off on holidays is an exciting time, but can also be an anxious time if you suffer from a food allergy. As we can’t board the planes to check rules are being followed, we sent guidance notes on the requirements to those airlines taking on food at Gatwick. “Because of the way airlines operate, flights coming in to Gatwick from outside the EU, or outgoing flights that have already taken on the food outside the EU, don’t have to follow the same rules - so those with food allergies still need to be careful in those situations. “We would always be interested to hear from passengers who have concerns over allergen management on flights, so that we can follow up specific incidents with the airlines.”

BBH Battery pack fire sparks safety warning Firefighters are urging people to unplug their electrical appliances overnight after a recent fire in Broadbridge Heath. Crews were called to the property in Cook Way at 1:22am on Tuesday (10 July), after the occupier called 999 for assistance. The fire is believed to have started from a portable battery power pack, often used for charging devices such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets. The battery pack was left on top of a mattress overnight and as a consequence, overheated and caught fire. Thankfully, nobody was injured and the fire was out on arrival. Speaking of the incident, Andrew Parsons, Fire Investigation Officer, said: “At this particular incident, there were two young occupants in the room at the time when the fire started. Thankfully the fire didn’t fully ignite and we were quickly alerted to the emergency. “I cannot emphasise the im-

portance of unplugging electrical charging devices before you go to bed enough. Many people are under the illusion that they will not be affected by a fire situation if they are to leave their charges unattended, but it is just not worth the risk.” Electrical Safety First offers the following safety advice: Use the power pack only for its intended use, e.g. to recharge your mobile phone. Keep it away from heat sources and liquids, such as, direct sunlight, humidity or water. Only use connecting cables provided with the battery pack and your mobile device. Don’t expose to extreme temperatures of hot or cold. Don’t leave a battery on prolonged charge when not in use. Don’t cover when charging. Charge in a well-ventilated environment. In the event of a cell leaking, don’t allow the liquid to come into contact with the skin or eyes. If

The pupils of Billingshurst Primary School have been kitted out with new cricket and football kits, thanks to So India, the Indian restaurant based in Pulborough. Kicking off the cricket season with a fresh new look, the kit will ensure the pupils are ready to compete against other schools from across the district. Inquiry will settle bridleway diversion The fate of a popular bridleway at Christ’s Hospital School will be decided by a Public Inquiry. The way crosses extensive school playing fields and is enjoyed by the public on foot, bike and horseback. Objectors are hoping to stop West Sussex County Council diverting the bridleway to the southern perimeter of the sports pitches. The existing way is mainly a sealed path, shared with the school, which provides a convenient off-road link to Christ’s Hospital Railway Station. Paul Brown, case officer from the Open Spaces Society, said: “The path is a delightful opportunity to enjoy wide open vistas. The diverted way would be narrow artificial way, a mile in length, between hedges”. Christ’s Hospital School want the order, already made by WSCC, to be confirmed by a Planning Inspector ,in the interest of safeguarding pupils and staff. There have been

numerous objections from concerned locals, and from Horsham and Southwater Parish councils. Ruth Fletcher of Horsham and District Cycle Forum explained: “Cycling provides huge benefits to health, and safe routes for local trips are the most effective way of getting people cycling. This bridleway forms part of a short, traffic-free link between the north of Southwater village and Christ’s Hospital Station. It only needs improved surfacing at either end to make cycling to the station an attractive alternative to driving. A new fence or hedge can easily provide the security the school requires, so this ancient right of way can continue to serve the community.” The inquiry will be held at The Hertford Centre, Christ’s Hospital School on Tuesday 24 July at 10:00 a.m. The inquiry is open for the public to attend. South Lodge host Collyer’s ‘Challenge of Management’

Over 100 Collyer’s students got a taste of the real world of business recently at the Challenge of Management 2018, run by Collyer’s at the 5 star South Lodge Hotel! The event enabled teams of ten students, each led by a top representative from the regional business community, to compete throughout the day in a number of business games and team building exercises. Expert business representatives and guest speakers supporting the event included: Mark Amaresekara (Kexidan Ltd), business expert Neil Bennett, Taylor Bennett (1st Class university 2018 graduate and ex-Collyer’s student), Nick Broom (PVL UK Ltd), Ann Donoghue (Collyer’s Governor and Senior International HR Professional); Sarah Ediss (Kreston Reeves), Mark Goodson (Accenture), Jenni Hadfield (South Lodge, an Executive Hotel), ex Collyer’s student Ella Howard (United Learning); Nick Kearley (Lloyds Banking Group), Kim Senior and ex-Collyer’s student Callum Byrne (both Assurity Consulting), Dominic Wakefield (Wakefield’s) and Raymond Warren (Raymond Warren Art). The popular and successful day is a key part of the college’s progression initiative, and gave students a taste of the real world of manage-

ment and employability skills. Collyer’s Employability Coordinator, Lucy Hargreaves, who ran the event, said: “Our students thought the experts were truly inspiring! These business professionals are all incredible supporters of Collyer’s and have given so much time, creativity, and energy, to help the next generation.” Throughout the day, attention was drawn to the learning opportunities that the tasks provided and real-life presentations were given about the routes available after college by 3 ex-Collyer’s students. Callum Byrne spoke about his experience as an apprentice at Assurity Consulting, Taylor Bennett gave an insight into university life, and Ella Howard, project manager at United Education, spoke about her success story. As well as benefiting from this practical and personal advice, student teams enjoyed an interactive ice-breaker, and then competed in a Sculpture and Presentation Competition, an Earthquake Dilemma, and the ever-popular Production Challenge. Using real life examples and techniques, teams discussed, planned and presented their ideas, all to win prizes throughout the day. Collyer’s Ian McAlister, who hosted the Sculpture and Presen-

tation Challenge, was delighted: “Throughout the day I was impressed and humbled by the sheer talent within the room. Students took the event very seriously, were ready to learn and certainly dressed for success!” The individual student prizes on the day went to Kieran Minihane (Networking Award, sponsored by PVL UK Ltd) and the overall top prize for Best Student Contribution (sponsored by Wakefield’s) was presented to Ingrid Tiber. Ingrid Tiber said: “I really appreciate this college and the business leaders putting in so much effort, money and time for all of us to have this experience, and to allowing us to develop our skills for the future! It is obvious they all care about helping us.” Deputy Principal Steve Martell, who hosted the event, said: “This is a complex day with many moving parts, so I cannot thank Lucy Hargreaves enough for organising it! Official opening of Horsham’s new chocolate experience Horsham District Council’s Chairman, Cllr Peter Burgess, officially opened Horsham’s new chocolate house Chococo on Thursday 12 July in Horsham’s Carfax. Chococo’s main ethos is that it uses fresh ingredients to make its products – there are no added preservatives or artificial colourings. The multi award-winning company has been gradually expanding across the south, making Horsham its 4th chocolate house. The company supports local food and drink producers in each location where it has a choco-

late house. Horsham is no exception – Chococo already works with Sussex-based Cast Iron Roasters coffee, Bird & Blend tea, Sussex ice cream, Wobblegate juices, and Coburn & Baker cakes. The Sussex Food and Drink Awards 2019, which launches in September this year, has opened its first category for entries. The popular Sussex Street Food of the Year category is now open for its fourth year and calls for Sussex-based businesses, who offer great food to be eaten in a mobile situation, and who fly the flag for ingredients made in the county. The panel of judges will be looking for an exciting business creating artisan dishes with care, passion, and true dedication to using quality local Sussex ingredients. Hilary Knight, co-director of Natural Partnerships CIC, who run the awards as a not-for-profit scheme to boost the local and artisan food and drink industry, explained: “We’re looking for amazing and creative food served from individually styled and attractive units, with a clear message about what’s on offer. This much loved local competition brings together the best in new and established local talent. Over the years the competition has for many been their first opportunity to play an outdoor show with professional sound. Mark Daly, former chairman of the Horsham District Live Music Alliance (HDLMA) and QM Studios Trustee said: “The question everybody asks is: “Did anyone famous come out of the BOTB competition?” My reply is always: “That’s not what BOTB is about, it’s about giving the local community of artists the experience of playing at a professional live event and having a whole lot of fun while doing it.”” The event has been running since 1993, The one night event was originally held at Roffey Sports and Social Club and featured six bands, the inaugural winners were “Decadent Dance”, featuring Stuart Brand who is still a leading light of the local music scene. The event became bigger over the years and entered its heyday when in 1999 local sound engineer Graham Ansell and Trevor Beadle from Horsham District Council had the idea of forming the HDLMA. Battle of the Bands then featured heats at the Extra Time Bar, Broadbridge Heath and an autumn final on the Carfax Bandstand. It became so popular it was decided to move the heats to the Drill Hall in Horsham. From 2004 to 2007 the originals competition featured six heats of six bands at the Drill Hall followed by a final at the Carfax. There was also a covers final at the Drill Hall and an acoustic final at The Holbrook Club. Up to 500 fans at a time packed the Drill Hall for the heats and over a thousand would turn up for the final in the Carfax. The Alliance and the competition suffered a major

blow when Graham Ansell sadly died of cancer in 2007. However with Mandy Ansell taking over the running of the Studio, BOTB continued to be held by the HDLMA. In 2013 the event became a one night originals final at the Drill Hall and acoustic final at the Holbrook Club. It was then that the HDLMA decided to call time

on the competition, but rather than let the event die, a group of local musicians and promoters formed a sub-committee to keep it going, moving the final to the Human Nature Garden in the summer, with cover bands on a Saturday afternoon, originals in the evening, and acoustics on Sunday afternoon. From 2014 to 2017 the event was still largely underwritten by the income from QM Studios. As the trustees of the HDLMA have moved to focus on the fantastic work of QM Studios resulting in the HDLMA being wound up and a focus on the studios, Jamie Stanley (Horsham Rocks) and Sam Albrow (High Gain Event Services) with the support of friends and colleagues are keen to ensure the event continues to be a success giving local musicians at all stages of their musical journey a platform to showcase their talent. Like any successful event that continues to grow, Battle of the Bands relies on local support to make it happen and cover the cost of everything from prizes and staging to toilets and security. Much of this comes from ticket sales, bar and food concessions. For many years Sir Thomas has defended the meadows of Loxwood and his joyous, kind and generous people against the advances of Sir Hector and Sir Kenneth. Returning to the Loxwood Meadow once again on the 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th August, Sir Thomas is joined by Sir Luke, to Joust for his honour, lands and people. Learn here of the four knights, their skills, daring and valour, and decide which you will support at this momentous jousting tournament. Sir Thomas of Loxwood Sir Thomas of Loxwood is a good and true knight, who is son of Queen Georgiana and brother to Princess Catherine. His colours are red and yellow, and of his 224 tournaments, he has won 176 and never killed whilst jousting. Many times has Sir Thomas has defended his lands and his people against the advances of Sir Hector and Sir Kenneth. He has continued his training with Sir Luke, and is ready to prevail triumphant once again by applying the ways of the old knights and Sir Luke’s knowledge of his rival. With the full support of the Loxwood people, Sir Thomas is eager to once

again prevent Sir Hector from throwing the Loxwood Lands into turmoil as he strikes back after last year’s defeat. Sir Luke Sir Luke is one of the most experienced knights alive today, with ancestry dating back to the legendary Camelot. He served the King for many years, and in times of great unrest, he was recognised for his prowess on a horse and aggressive fighting style, as he would always do what it took to win the fight. Sir Luke left the wars and battles to find peace, until Sir Thomas asked that he once again help him defend his lands against the menace that is Sir Hector and the ruffian known as Sir Kenneth. Sir Luke’s colours are blue with white and red crosses. He has entered 3,456 tournaments, won 1,263 and killed 296 knights whilst jousting. Sir Kenneth Sir Kenneth is a berserker knight and an apprentice to Sir Hector. An aggressive Jouster and swordsman he will go for the kill rather than have his man yield. Riding in his black and yellow colours, Sir Kenneth has slight regard for the rules of chivalry. He has 218 tournaments under

his belt, has killed 11 knights in jousting and has won 59 of his tournaments. Sir Kenneth and Sir Hector share a hatred for the Loxwood Royal Family and have tried to depose Queen Georgiana several times. They often work as a team against a single knight and will try to fix the Joust’s results, which is well outside the rules! Sir Hector Dressed in black with crossed silver axes, Sir Hector is one of the most vicious, malicious and hated knights that has ever cheated his way to victory. Never popular, he has won 168 of his 440 tournaments and killed 41 knights. Sir Hector lives up to all the stories about him. He has a shameless disregard for the rules of chivalry, station and decency; and keen to claim the lands of Loxwood as his own, the bad feeling between Sir Thomas and Sir Hector palpable. He and Sir Luke are fierce competitors in the jousting arena, with every meeting resembling a clash of titans. However, it now appears that Princess Catherine, daughter to the Queen and sister to Sir Thomas, has caught the eye of Sir Hector!

School and housebuilder make plastic fantastic

Housebuilder Barratt Homes has teamed up with Thakeham Primary School, near its Warren Grove development in Storrington, to promote some important sustainability messages. The innovative project, designed to educate pupils about the importance of recycling, has seen the school collecting unwanted hard plastic toys and rigid plastics such as tubs and trays – replacing them with a recycled playground house and bench for the pupils to enjoy.

In line with its own sustainability messages, which sees Barratt Homes recycle as much as 95% of its own onsite waste at its new homes site at Warren Grove instead of going to landfill, the developer will be working with its recycling partner, Powerday to deliver the project. Nuthurst succeeded at the toss and elected to bat, posting a respectable, if not killer, 130-5 off their 20 six ball over allocation, Johnny Willis and Raggy Singh both retiring with thirties under the rules of the competition. Nick Sherlicker had come in with a cameo, includ-

ing two well-struck sixes, while Richard Hancock took 2-28 off his allotted four overs - but AJW conceded 34 extras. Had Nuthurst got enough runs? Following rain abandonments in the sides’ previous three Premier League encounters - lastly when Roffey had East Grinstead tottering at 20-3 with the cream of their batting gone - this was a disappointing game. Roffey prefer to chase but as East Grinstead have been bowled out cheaply three times so far this season (for 125 at Middleton and, twice at home – for 123 against Preston Nomads and 135 versus Ifield), Roffey elected to bat, considering that their hosts might be vulnerable batting second. But, the pitch won – it was too benign for even Roffey’s varied attack to make sufficient break throughs and East Grinstead made no effort to get the runs, despite the flat wicket, fast outfield and surprisingly short boundaries. Roffey batted enterprisingly, beginning with an 116 run opening partnership and after Theo Rivers was out for 37 Ben Manenti and Jibran Khan (76) carried on, with Rohit Jagota and Usman Khan – 41 not out – chipping in with useful contributions. Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s long undefeated run ended when, much depleted, they came unstuck against Preston Nomads at Fulking last Saturday. But, despite scoring a seemingly inadequate total, Horsham pushed Nomads hard and had them on 99-6 until feisty cameos from the lower order saw the hosts home. Nomads inserted Horsham and 17 year old Rhys Beckwith was soon forced to retire hurt after being hit on the head by tall first class Kiwi cricketer Blair Tickner, saying: “He was bowling very short and I didn’t pick up the one that got me.” To Horsham’s detriment, Sussex had backtracked on their strategy of releasing players not required by the county and Horsham were far from full strength. Captain Michael Thornely top scored with 38, but while several other batsmen got starts, nobody was able to go on to make a really telling contribution as Navin Patel, Tim Moses and Will Collard each

When Nomads replied, Mika Ekstrom dismissed both openers cheaply, but Stuart Faith’s 48 took them to 91-3 before three wickets fell in quick succession, giving Horsham a sniff of victory before belligerence from the tail saw Nomads home, Ekstrom finishing with 3-42 , Liam Ward 2-10 and Joe Ashmore 2-41. Mika Ekstrom told us: “Michael Thornely was the mainstay of our innings – it was a bouncy wicket with a tinge of green and the outfield was very lush and slow, so our 130 was worth around 180.” This was a potentially winnable match for Horsham, yet, although they bowled well, denied the services of Sussex’s George Garton, Will Beer and Nick Oxley and with Tom Haines still recovering from concussion, Tom Clark nursing a fielding induced neck strain and Tom Johnson and others unavailable, they did not quite have the fire power. This Saturday Horsham, now fifth, are back at Cricketfield Road to take on eighth in the table Cuckfield, who, despite pre-season expectations suggesting a serious challenge for the title, have been surprisingly struggling, notwithstanding the presence of Aussie Big Bash exponent Sam Whiteman, who scored 130 against Horsham when Cuckfield won earlier in the season.

Again carrying the flag as the sole Sussex team to survive in the competition, as they have done consistently in recent years, Roffey are through to the last eight in the 40 over ECB National Club Championship – their highest ever placing. A glance at the scores might suggest that this was a comfortable win – it was in the latter stages of the game – but it needed considerable resolve to get Roffey

across the winning line when, chasing a seemingly modest target, they got off to an horrendous start, before being rescued by an outstanding 135 run fourth wicket partnership. Chingford had beaten current cup holder Wanstead in the previous round, but, at the end of their tiring cricket week, Chingford, fourth in the Essex Premier League, had been bowled out for 114 the day before. Bowling is probably Chingford’s strength, but, after being put in at Roffey and losing an early wicket, they built a sound launch platform, only for Roffey to grab control with three wickets in six balls. George Fleming saw off the two seemingly well set batsmen from consecutive deliveries, including an excellent Max Rivers boundary catch, before Leigh Harrison snaffled a sharp return hit to dismiss an incom-

Suddenly Chingford were 45-4, re-starting their innings with two new batsmen and, while the fifth wicket partnership was worth 62 and four of their later batsmen reached double figures, tight bowling and sure fielding applied severe restriction. 107-5 became 129-8 as Luke Barnard (2-25), Alex Collins (3-21) and Theo Rivers worked their way through the middle and lower order. At tea Chingford were circumspect and Roffey confident, but the roles were soon reversed when both Roffey openers were back in the clubhouse just for just a single apiece. From 4-2 worse followed when Usman Khan was trapped LBW and at 10-3 with the bowlers in the ascendancy Roffey had Everest to climb if they were to progress towards their dream of National Cup success. However, Jibran Khan has been in good form with a recent Premier League century under his belt and Matt Davies delivered a proper captain’s innings. Watchfully at first, the pair gradually rebuilt Roffey’s response, until, with confidence growing, they re-took command, enthralling the large

Seeking to seal victory in the grand manner, Jibran Khan persished just before the end, but Josh Fleming came in to hit the winning boundary off his first ball. Davies finished with a polished and assured 59 not out, telling the District Post: “It was a bit nerve wracking going out there when we were ten for three and I haven’t had to bat too often for us this season, so it was a great game to win.” Jibran Khan added: “It was a bit of a sticky pitch with the ball not quite coming on to the bat and I didn’t think we were going to do it!” While Coach Simon Fearnley – the only person on the ground confident of a Roffey win after the three early wickets fell, said: “I felt we had the depth to pull it off and we’ve still got all four competitions in play.” In the Quarter Final Roffey travel to Brentwood on Sunday August 5th. The other teams left in the National Cup are: Clevedon (north Somerset), Ormskirk (west Lancashire), Richmondshire (Yorkshire), Stanmore and Wolverhampton. Next Sunday Roffey travel to Hastings in the semi final of the Sussex Cup and on Sunday the 29th they play at Horsham on the area finals day in the National T20 Cup.
