Enchanted Horsham receives mixed reviews Over three days, almost 10,000 visitors embraced the festival atmosphere and the weather, which ranged from sorching hot through to damp and rainy, to attend the very first Enchanted Horsham event. Visitors donned multi-coloured wigs, face paint, and unicorn horns, to fully immerse themselves in the magical theme. With many taking full advantage of the range of activities included in the ticket price, such as the circus workshops, live music stage, strolling entertainers, the silent disco with UV face and boding painting, and fashion shows, in aid of Chestnut Tree House, the event programme provided something for everyone. Then, as dusk fell, the beautiful illuminations came to life in five separate areas, and drago pictures (provided by pupils at Kingslea Primary School) were featured, in large scale projection, on to Park House. Taking to social media to express her delight, one visitor posted: “We had an amazing evening yesterday.3 children, 7, 12 and 14, myself and my husband travelled to hunt a unicorn.

We had amazing shows, glittering faces and fabulous food. Yes, there were queues, but there are always going to be queues where there are people. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and we came away smiling and enchanted. “My daughter met a real unicorn (“there wasn’t a strap mummy, it was a real horn”), had a chat with a mermaid and a photo with a dragon. My husband had reservations before we got here, but even he got involved with plate spinning and juggling. We are looking forward to the next one.” But, as with all new events, there are always teething problems, and others took to social media to announce their dismay at the queues for food and the toilets. Demand for tickets on Saturday was particularly high and, in response, the organisers suspended further ticket sales early Saturday evening, to prevent additional congestion; opened the entrance gate further, for quicker access; and opened additional toilets, to help with the queues. From 1 October 2018 West Sussex residents who drive a commercial-type vehicle will need to have a permit to dispose of their household waste at County Council recycling sites. The permit will apply to anyone who uses a van, pickup or single axle trailer and will be available to West Sussex residents only. The scheme is been introduced at all 11 West Sussex Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRSs) and the two mobile sites. Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Our county provides a good network of recycling sites with fewer restrictions and charges than neighbouring authorities. “The sites are popular and well used which, at times, can cause queues and delay. “The changes are intended to help speed up visits, avoid illegal commercial waste and encourage

‘We fully accept that there are lessons to be learnt’ Priding itself on providing a ‘mouth-watering array of global street food stalls and pop-up restaurants’, Enchanted Horsham did not disappoint. However, although the locally sourced artisan foods were excellent, and had a selection to tempt most palates, there were instances where food stalls were unable to meet the high demand, and lengthy queues formed. Robin Morley, organiser of the event, said: “The take up and excitement around Horsham for this new event was exceptional, and we are delighted that so many visitors have really experienced the magical event we strove to create. We are also

saddened that others have not seen it in the same light, and would like to thank everyone for their patience in some of the queues, and for the time they took to advise us of the problems. We fully accept that there are lessons to be learnt, and all comments and suggestions that were made are being taken into consideration for our future events. “For us, it was exciting to see the different generations and enthusiasts so enjoying their time at Enchanted Horsham. Many clearly loved the light projections, and took the opportunity to capture some really special family moments on camera.”

residents in other counties with large loads to use sites provided by their own local authority.” In addition some vehicles will no longer be allowed to use HWRSs. Restricted vehicles include: multi axle trailers (four wheels), horse boxes, tipper trucks, flatbed or dropside trucks, luton type vans. For health and safety reasons all trailers will be banned from Bognor Regis and Littlehampton sites. Leaflets will be handed out at HWRSs to individuals affected by the changes in August and September before the scheme is fully implemented on 1 October 2018. Residents can start applying for a permit from 1 August 2018. To find out more visit www. westsussex.gov.uk/permitscheme.

Mexican-inspired local dad runs 52 miles for children’s charity!

A father-of-three from Horsham, who was inspired by a book about the world’s best ultra-runners in North America, has completed a double marathon for charity. Robert Caister, who works in customer care for house builder, Bovis Homes, ran the ‘Race to the King’ along the South Downs Way to Winchester Cathedral to raise money for the Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. Robert took on the 52.4-mile challenge after reading Christopher McDougall’s ‘Born to Run’, which highlights Mexican Indians, the Tarahumara, who are reputed to be the best distance runners in the world. The 44-year-old completed the race in 13 hours 21 minutes and has raised nearly £500 for the char-

ity. He was supported by his wife, Maxine, and three children; Oliver 13, Amélie, nine and Oscar, eight. Robert said: “It felt so rewarding, the last few miles were really tough – each mike seemed like two miles. At one point I was handed a quarter of an orange by a spectator, it tasted like the best thing I’ve ever had. “The race was full of really normal people, of all ages, backgrounds and shapes and as you’re running, you’re not going at full pelt so you can chat and meet people, it was so inspirational.” Robert’s family were there to support him and met him half-way as he stopped for pasta, as well as at the finish line. And Oscar, known for his cheeky character, had a message for his Dad at the

end of the race. Robert explained: “The first thing Oscar said to me as I had just crossed the finish line was, ‘Daddy, I’m really thirsty’. He’s a trouble maker but it was so good to have them there!” The regional customer care director, who is based at Bovis Homes’ Kings Hill office in Kent and has worked for the company for eight months, took up running around 15 years ago. He progressed from 5k runs to half marathons, including the Richmond Half Marathon and The Poppy Half Marathon in Bexhillon-Sea. He has never competed in a marathon however, although ran the distance as part of his training for the big race. Robert’s three months’ training for Race to the King also included 15 half marathons and he said anyone who was healthy and interested in

running could complete a double marathon challenge. “I was a very active squash player from my 20s and towards the end of my 30s, started doing more and more running,” he said. “I didn’t fancy a marathon, I had so many friends that did but because they had set themselves a time goal they were disappointed if they missed it - even though they’d run 26 miles! “For me, the achievement of running the distance is more important than the time it takes to do it. That’s why I wanted to do an ultra-marathon. I stopped listening to music and audio books and started thinking about my breathing and the way I was running. I find it like a form of meditation. “Anyone that’s thinking about it, should do it. Don’t limit yourself to thinking a marathon distance is beyond you because you can go so

far beyond that if you test yourself and your capabilities.” Robert, who (as a vegetarian) gets his protein from snacking on cheese and nuts during race preparations, along with all the carbs, will now focus on 5ks before competing in a longer challenge again. Robert said that Chestnut Tree House was a “worthy cause”. The charity provides hospice care services for children and young people with progressive life-shortening conditions in east and west Sussex, Brighton and Hove and south east Hampshire. NSPCC concern over children left home alone during summer holidays

Last August 849 children were referred by the NSPCC Helpline to social services or police due to worries about them being left unsupervised. A third of these children were aged between 0 and 5 Now that the Summer Holidays are here, the NSPCC offers guidance to parents in West Sussex on leaving children home alone The NSPCC is reminding parents and carers not to leave young children home alone as the summer holidays start. Last August the charity’s Helpline made referrals involving 849 children to police and social services due to concerns about them being left unsupervised by their parent or carer. A third of these

were aged five and under. Throughout 2017/18 there were 7,277 children referred to authorities due to concerns about them being left to fend for themselves, with the problem being most acute in August during the long school holidays. The NSPCC has warned that although a child may seem responsible enough to be left alone without supervision, parents and carers should think carefully whether they would be able to cope with unexpected situations such as an emergency, a stranger calling at the house, being hungry or if the parent is away for longer than anticipated. The charity is also encouraging parents to read its home alone guide which includes questions they should ask themselves and their children before deciding to leave a child unsupervised. NSPCC Head of Safeguarding in Communities, Chris Cloke, said: “It can be difficult for parents and carers to decide whether their child is ready to be left on their own and we know that the summer holidays can be a tricky time as people face increasing childcare pressures. “However, it is still very concerning that we are consistently seeing a spike in August of referrals to social services and the police due to worries about children being left unsupervised. No child should be

left on their own if there is any risk they will come to harm.” To help parents and carers who may be considering whether or not to leave their child on their own for the first time this summer, the NSPCC is issuing guidance on leaving children home alone on its website. Key points include: - Babies, toddlers and very young children should never be left alone. - Children under the age of 12 are rarely mature enough to cope in an emergency and should not be left at home alone for a long period of time. - Children under the age of 16 should not be left alone overnight. - Parents and carers can be prosecuted for neglect if it is judged that they placed a child at risk by leaving them at home alone. - A child should never be left at home alone if they do not feel comfortable with it, regardless of their age. - If a child has additional needs, these should be considered when leaving them at home alone or with an older sibling. - When leaving a younger child with an older sibling think about what may happen if they were to have a falling out - would they both be safe? The NSPCC’s helpline is available 24/7 on 0808 800 5000 for free and confidential advice.

New partnership to support families living with domestic abuse in West Sussex

An exciting partnership with a national domestic abuse charity will further help vulnerable families across West Sussex and beyond. West Sussex County Council has jointly commissioned an innovative pilot with the charity SafeLives and other partners to enhance the whole-family approach to supporting and protecting victims. Jo Millward, West Sussex County Council Service Leader – Integrated Prevention and Earliest Help Service, said: “The county council is delighted to be working with SafeLives and the other partners in this exciting project, which will complement the already established high-risk domestic abuse services that exist within West Sussex. “Safeguarding whole families from abuse is already one of the

council’s key priorities and we are united with everyone involved in this project in our desires to identify anyone impacted by any form of abuse and to support them to receive the appropriate help they need.” The partnership will focus on: • Support to stop situations escalating • Support for the complex needs many people have – often because of, or exacerbated by domestic abuse, such as substance misuse and mental ill health • Support for people who are still in their relationship or living with the perpetrator of abuse • Support for children and young people through specialist, age appropriate services

• Support for survivors to recover from the harm, heal and build resilience SafeLives Chief Executive, Suzanne Jacob, said:“We know that 85 per cent of victims of domestic abuse seek help five times on average before they get effective help. This is four times too many. Too often the response to domestic abuse remains a postcode lottery. We owe it to victims, survivors and families to hear them as soon as they reach out, ensuring they receive a tailored response that meets their needs.” The work will be delivered by The YOU Trust, Aurora New Dawn and The Hampton Trust. Tonia Redvers, Head of Hidden Violence and Counselling at YOU said: “We were thrilled to be awarded the opportunity to deliver this project in West Sussex. YOU have been delivering services addressing domestic violence and abuse for over 30 years and this is a wonderful opportunity to develop a new team to deliver an innovative response to victims, survivors, children and perpetrators of domestic abuse.” This project is also being funded by the Big Lottery Fund Women and Girls Initiative, The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, The Peter Cundill Foundation and The Aurum Charitable Trust. Anyone who needs or is aware of someone needing support for domestic abuse across West Sussex should ring 07834 968539 or 033 022 28181 or email DomesticAbuseServicesCentral@westsussex.gov.uk

young readers to finish six books of their choice. Those who complete the challenge will be awarded a medal and certificate. Debbie Kennard, Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communi-

ties, said: “This is such a fantastic challenge and I would encourage as many of our county’s children to take part as possible because reading is not only great fun, but a great way to learn. “It’s also a fantastic way of introducing children to our brilliant library service which has so much to offer as well as books.” The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is Mischief Makers which celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Beano comic. Reading and sharing books during the long summer holidays can prevent a dip in your child’s reading ability. The Reading Challenge is free to take part and only requires a library card to register which is available for free at each library. Adults accompanying children are encouraged to complete a reading challenge of their own called Read3. This involves finishing three books over the summer with the opportunity to enter a draw to win an iPad. The Summer Reading Challenge runs from Saturday 14 July to Saturday 15 September. Blue Ship Charity Dog Show a sailing success The Blue Ship in Billingshurst, which held a Charity Fun Dog Show on Saturday 30 June to fundraise for Candy Cane Rescue, have recently shared their delight at its success. It was a fantastic day (despite the extremely hot weather!) which raised a fantastic total of £824.20 for the Charity. Landlady Sophie Bailey said: “We were simply delighted that we managed to raise this amount - especially for the first dog show we have held for the Charity. We know that every penny truly does help save dogs that are in desperate situations.” Kerry Elliman, who heads up Candy Cane Rescue, commented: “The money that Sophie and The Blue Ship raised from their dog show was a huge amount. It’s helped so much towards the cost of our vet bills in China. Most of the dogs which come into our care are really poorly and need a lot of medical treatment. The reason we started Candy Cane Rescue was because of the crisis of dogs in the meat trade in China. We couldn’t do any of what we do without people like Sophie raising money to help us.” The Blue Ship now plan to

make the show an annual event to be held on the last Saturday in June, and are hoping to build on the number of attendees and the amount raised. In the meantime they will also continue to fundraise for Candy Cane, with donation boxes in the pub: “so if anyone missed the dog show but would still like to donate they are able to at any time, any amount is gratefully received, and this is sent to the charity monthly.” The Blue Ship team expressed ‘a massive thank you’ to all of the people who attended with their dogs, as well as the many local businesses who either sponsored the event or donated prizes for the raffle, and are said to be looking forward to welcoming everyone again next year.

Young Architects in Action

Children at Thakeham Primary School were challenged to become young architects by housebuilder Oakford Homes who asked them to produce scaled floor plans for a new home of their own design. Mike Lenton, project manager at Oakford Homes, joined Emma Hopkins’s class of Year 5/6 to introduce the challenge. “We talked about how important accurate plans are and how many different skills are needed to build a house,” said Mike, “from laying foundations to planning the kitchen and bathrooms ready for the final owner, and how everyone involved will be relying on the architects’ plans.” Oakford Homes is currently building new homes, sports pitches and community facilities at Abingworth Meadows in Thakeham and has worked with the teacher, Emma Hopkins, to create a chal-

lenge which demonstrates to the children the importance of maths in the workplace. Mike returned to judge the entries and present prizes in four categories - originality, presentation, build-ability and effort. “Judging was much more difficult than I expected,” said Mike. “The standard of work was exceptionally high, far more advanced than I’d anticipated, so it was a very hard task to pick the winners in each category and there were some very close second places. “Every entry had some interesting and impressive ideas. We especially liked the ideas of a treasure room and a dance studio and there were lots of gaming rooms and home cinemas! “I hope these young architects keep their designs to look back on in years ahead especially if they go

into housebuilding in the future. There are so many different career options in housebuilding and it would be lovely to think that some of these amazing children here in Thakeham Primary will go on to become architects, engineers and builders one day.” Mike asked how many children would like to be architects in future and lots of hands shot up. Emma Hopkins, added, “It’s been a real pleasure to work with Oakford Homes on this project. The children have really enjoyed creating their own floor plans and they’ve learnt a lot along the way about the complexity of designing a new house. Horsham Wheels for ALL receive a cash boost Horsham District Council’s inclusive cycling programme Horsham Wheels for ALL received a cash boost this week from North West Sussex Seagulls (NWSS) who are an independent Brighton and Hove Albion supporters club. The Council’s Sports Development Officer Paul Taylor received a cheque for £1,000 from the supporters club Chairman Andy Stonestreet. The donation will be put towards the purchase of a new Davinci side by side hand cycle, which is a specially adapted bike for the cycling group. Earlier in the year, the Sports Development team organised a sponsored bike ride along the Downs Link, to raise money for the new bike. They are aiming to raise £4,000 in total. Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, commented: “We are extremely grateful to North West Sussex Seagulls for their very generous donation towards the new cycle

we are aiming to buy. “This inclusive cycling group has gone from strength to strength since it was successfully trialled early last year, with more and more people wanting to take part. “So it’s great that we have nearly reached our target to buy this new cycle to add to the fleet of specially adapted bikes that we have available for a broad range of needs.” Initially appealing to a younger audience, the sessions have now also extended their appeal to adults. One gentleman who developed Glaucoma recently thought he would never cycle again but with our specially adapted bikes and knowledgeable and supportive session leaders he is looking forward to getting back in the saddle. The sessions run on Friday evenings during term time on the athletics track at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre from 4.30pm – 6pm and cost £5 per

‘Free tennis Friday’ sees Jeremy Quin MP take to the court After its successful makeover of Horsham Park’s tennis courts last summer, Horsham District Council was pleased to introduce its first annual membership scheme to the courts last week. To mark the launch of the annual tennis scheme, the Council’s Sports Development team hosted a ‘Free tennis Friday” session at the courts on Friday (27 July). Jeremy Quin MP, and Horsham District Council Cabinet Member, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, popped along to meet up with the players, as they signed up for the new scheme, and have a quick knock around. The annual membership scheme represents extremely good value for money at just £45 a year per family. In order to sign up for annual

membership to the new scheme, please visit: www.horshamparktennis.com/Membership. The court improvements made by the Council last year include new fencing, new surfaces, re-marking and a new gate and booking system, ensuring that players can guarantee use of a court at their chosen time. The introduction of floodlighting allows players to maximise bookings throughout the year, with play continuing into the evening. All four courts can be used specifically for tennis over the summer months, however in the autumn and winter months, one court can be used for multi sports. For more information about the courts and to book a court please go to: www.horshamparktennis. com

session or £4 for people with a Leisure Access Card or Compass Card on a pay as you go basis. The Wheels for ALL instructors offer one to one tuition to allow each trainee to maximise their own riding ability and improve their control skills. We encourage the members’ friends and family to join in the sessions and have a large pool of adapted bikes and trikes ready for people to use. For more information about the inclusive cycling project or to make a donation towards new adapted cycles, please contact Paul Taylor on 01403 215637 or paul.taylor@horsham.gov.uk For more information about NWSS go to their website: http:// www.northwestsussexseagulls. co.uk/

Checkatrade Founder to speak at Storrington care home South East Construction Expo 2018 celebrates awards success

Billingshurst-based founder of Checkatrade, Kevin Byrne, will enlighten guests on the subject of the transition ‘from the hallway to the boardroom with no cash’, as speaker at Construction Expo South East 2018 on 13th September. Kevin will tell his story of how he built a household brand with zero investment, and with just an idea and passion; how he built a 300 plus strong team that produced a service used by a quarter of the UK households in 2017. South East Construction Expo 2018 will be held in Sussex for the first time in September at the South of England Event Centre in Ardingly. The trade show, founded ten years ago and previously held in Kent, will showcase the region’s largest range of construction

products and services and is a ‘must visit’ for anyone whose business deals in development, property and construction. Carole Black from South East Construction Expo said: “Sussex really is leading the way with its exciting construction projects in Brighton & Hove, and across East and West Sussex, so it is great to be able to hold the South East Construction Expo 2018 here. “The UK’s construction output stands at more than £110 billion per annum, accounts for ten per cent of employment and will continue to be a key driver in our prosperity over the coming years. We are committed to continuing to support this fast-moving industry with a leading conference and exhibition enabling sponsors, exhibitors and delegates to build lasting business relationships.”

New for 2018 will be the ‘Construction Village’, which will accommodate exhibits of any size both inside and out – offering the ultimate in flexibility for exhibitors and demonstrators. It will take this event to a totally new dimension and make it one of the most exciting Construction Events in the UK. The event offers free Meet the Buyer appointments with the top construction companies in the country, great exhibitor packages, brilliant networking opportunities, high quality CPD approved workshops, plus the latest news on projects and developments across the UK. An exciting list of speakers and panel discussions will cover every aspect of what is important to the industry right now, with Wayne Hemingway MBE from the Design Council, Kevin Byrne founder of Checkatrade and Anne Timpany from On Tap Plumbers speaking at the BIG networking breakfast and the entertaining Gyles Brandreth hosting the BIG construction dinner. Many more speakers and attractions are yet to be announced. Delegates can sign up for free entry and Meet the Buyer appointments can be made by visiting: www.constructionexpouk. co.uk Sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are still available. Twitter @ConstructExpo Kevin Byrne will also speak at the business leaders networking breakfast, which can be booked for £19.50 including a cooked breakfast. South East Construction Expo 2018 will take place at South of England Event Centre, Ardingly, Haywards Heath, Thursday 13 September 8.30 am - 4.30 pm.

Care South’s Sussexdown care home, near Storrington, is celebrating after being awarded the prestigious ‘Manager of the Year’ award, and ‘Best Dining Experience’, at the company’s annual Stars Awards ceremony, held last month at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium. Zelly Hutchinson was nominated, alongside numerous Managers and Deputy Managers across the company’s 18 care homes, and selected by a panel of judges after receiving several nominations from colleagues and residents at the home. The nominations praised Zelly for being approachable and friendly and always going ‘above and beyond’, with many commenting how lucky they were to have her at the home, and how fond the residents are of her. Graham Brittain, Director of

Residential Care, commented: “It’s fantastic that Zelly has been recognised at this year’s Stars Awards ceremony. She is not only a fantastic mentor to the team at Sussexdown, but a compassionate and caring individual who is loved by our residents at the home.” Susan Willoughby, Chief Executive at Care South, said: “We are delighted to present Zelly with this award. She works incredibly hard to help run a very busy home and is truly enhancing people’s lives. She should be very proud to be this year’s Manager of the Year. “Our Stars Awards are now in their eighth year, and really are a highlight for us and our teams. It offers us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the professionalism, passion and commitment to care that is delivered day in, day out by our staff, and gives us the chance to acknowledge and thank everyone for their hard work and dedication. We received an incredible number of nominations this year and all our finalists and winners should be extremely proud of themselves.” Sussexdown was also selected as the winner of the ‘Best Dining Experience’, with the judging and assessment being led by Alex Every, Chef Manager. The home was given the coveted award in recognition of its excellent kitchen team, menu choice and the quality of the dining experience at the home. Care South is the leading provider of high quality residential and home care services across the south of England. Care South has care homes in Dorset, north Devon, Somerset and West Sussex, and home care offices covering east and west Dorset, Bath and North East Somerset and south Somerset. The Care South Stars Awards recognise and reward individuals, and teams, from across the company for their outstanding achievements and excellent care provision. Nominees are put forward by colleagues, residents, service users and relatives. The ceremony took place at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium and celebrated the achievements of over 50 staff who received formal qualifications during the year.

Come and be part of the Loxwood Joust’s spectacular mediaeval festival, as it explores the full richness of our countries grand heritage with an unrivalled programme of mediaeval revelry. Taking place at the magical Loxwood Meadow from 10am to 6pm on the 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th August, this is your chance to step back in time and experience this unique, fun and educational day out for all the family. A day out like no other, you will become immersed in the verve and vigour of a world where lives were harsh and hearts were pas-

sionate. Cheer the magnificent fully armoured jousting knights as they present a fast-paced, all action jousting tournament; and in the battlefield, see more than 200 archers, guns men and fully armoured knights, clash steel on steel as they fight in an almighty battle that takes place in front of your eyes. Wander through the massive Living History Village and become immersed in an authentic recreation of a mediaeval battle encampment. Watch the camps inhabitants go about their daily life, with smiths sharpening swords and

their good wives cooking stew over steaming pots, before the cannon fires to announce the start of the battle. Mediaeval life was a terrifying one and Gilbert Savage the Executioner is a gruesome and frightening apparition. Dressed all in black and wielding an axe or scythe, he will show you that creativity came in all forms during the dark ages! Then in the den of the witches those creatures most foul will be gathered around their black cauldron, but will they bewilder or enlighten, or lure and beguile you with their spells and incantations? The Faerie Realm in the enchanted woodlands is new for 2018 and at the Crescent Moon Temple the Faerie Goddess Mother will introduce you to the Loxwood nature spirits, before you place your blessing on the Wishing Tree. Then make a promise to your loved one and celebrate in a true pagan style with a handfasting ceremony as you partake in a full bespoke wedding, take vow renewals, have a ring blessing, or make a commitment for “as long as love shall last.” in the magical woodland setting. In the heart of the woodland you will also find the Mead Shack and it is here that the ‘Nectar of the Gods’, the golden liqueur of poets, lovers and kings, can be sampled and enjoyed as you are enticed, entranced and soothed by the magical voices of the internationally acclaimed Mediaeval Baebes. Feasts played an important role in mediaeval life and Mediaeval Banquets were designed to amaze and entertain. Treat yourself and experience a dining experience

you will never forget where Queen Georgiana of Loxwood is hosting a sumptuous four course banquet, whilst you are entertained by court jesters, live music and riddlers in the lavish banqueting marquee. Take part in the workshops and join the blacksmith to master the art of metalwork, undertake chainmailing as you create your own jewellery, or try your hand at copper bowl making. For the younger ones, let them use their imagination too, as they create a badge in pewter and punch their name or initials on to copper charms. Make sure you see the majestic hunters of the skies up close with their falconers when not in flight; and browse the Mediaeval Market Place where traders and hawkers vie for your attention as traders skilled in authentic medieval techniques bring their wares to sell just like peddlers of old. Then nestled in the far corner of the Midsummers Meadow you will find the Children’s Kingdom; a festival within a festival where the Mediaeval Groat is the currency. Let little ones try have-a-go archery and learn some longsword moves at sword school, before they pelt the peasant, adorn themselves with face and wound paint and jump on the bouncy castle. The Loxwood Joust is a festival like no other and one of discovery, as history comes to life each day from 10am to 6pm. Excellently located just off the B2133 between Wisborough Green and Loxwood, it has ample Free Parking. Advance tickets are available at www.loxwoodjoust.co.uk

Freddy had a brass band background, notably with Horsham Borough Band and as a tribute to Fred all of the outstanding musicians playing alongside each other were determined to keep the big band going and I’m pleased to say that we’re still blowing up a storm!” Music was undoubtedly in Woods family blood – two of Freddy’s brothers were professionals – one with the London Philharmonic and the other with Canada’s Halifax Symphony Orchestra and his son Bill plays the baritone sax with Freddy’s nephew Rex Walker and Rex’s son Andy also in the sax line up. After operating on Freddy following a nasty car accident, sur-

geon Mike Lavelle joined the band as keyboard player, the make up of the band cementing many long term friendships. JAZZ – PICNIC ON THE SQUARE is sponsored by Ryan Canter Club to support the wonderful Chestnut Tree House, who provide much-needed advice and information for children with life limiting or life-threatening conditions and specialist short breaks, together with emergency and end of life care, supplied by the multidisciplinary team at the Hospice. The unique facility also delivers home and community services for children and families in their own homes throughout West and East Sussex and beyond, coupled with bereavement support, befriending, counselling, plus palliative and spiritual care. Tickets for JAZZ – PICNIC ON THE SQUARE are £15 in advance or £20 on the day with all profits going to Chestnut House. The gates open at 2pm and its “carriages at 7pm” – bring your picnic! Horsham Cricket Club is delighted to announce the return of JAZZ – PICNIC ON THE SQUARE – the popular outdoor big band music extravaganza at the Cricketfield Road club - on Sunday August 19, when Pimms and other refreshments will be available from the club bar. The legendary Freddy Woods Big Band is providing the music and it is a fund raiser for a great local cause – The Chestnut House Children’s Hospice. The Freddy Woods Big Band performs to large, enthusiastic music-loving audiences every first Wednesday of the month at the cricket club. The band was formed by trumpeter Freddy Woods in 1980 after he had played for many years locally. Initially the band rehearsed at Forest School and afterwards went to the Hornbrook pub, where they were invited to play, subsequently coming to Horsham Cricket Club for their much appreciated shows – featuring classic standards performed by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and other well loved greats. Sadly, Horsham born Freddy passed away but the loyalty of the exceptionally talented musicians, many of whom are professionals travelling long distances for the pleasure of playing together, ensures that the band lives on, under the direc-

Parents help couple buy their dream home in Southwater

Parents will always try to go the extra mile for their children. A recent survey by Habito has revealed that 62 per cent of 1,000 parents said that they would happily let their children return to the family home in order to save money for a deposit. Furthermore, 44 per cent would give up to £10,000 for a deposit, while 20 per cent said they would happily give more. Nicola Armstrong and her partner Chris, one of Berkeley’s very first residents at Broadacres in Southwater, West Sussex, experienced first-hand the generosity of her loving parents who helped them secure the home of their dreams. Nicola Armstrong, an IT Business Analyst (29) and her partner Chris Styles, a Cable Jointer (also 29), the very first buyers to move into a new home at Broadacres, have recently moved into a twobedroom Robin house type. Keen

to help their daughter onto the property ladder, Nicola’s parents helped them move by allowing them to live at their house rent free, allowing them to make savings to go towards furnishing their home. After nine months, Nicola and Chris found their dream home at Broadacres, and Nicola’s dad kindly gifted the couple a significant deposit. Nicola explains: “We had dreams of buying a new home but didn’t think it would happen as fast as it did, until my dad visited Broadacres with Chris and I one weekend. On seeing the stunning properties available, especially the Robin house type, he insisted on helping us secure our new home. We were both delighted and were unbelievably grateful for his help. In addition, the savings we had already made due to living rent free for nine months at my parent’s home, helped us furnish the prop-

erty. It is really exciting to be the first people to live at Broadacres and we look forward to getting to know our new neighbours over the coming months and years ahead.” Broadacres is situated to the west of the charming village location of Southwater in West Sussex. This exciting new development of unique homes will provide high quality two to five-bedroom properties, designed to complement the character of the area. Berkeley’s aim is to create a sustainable new neighbourhood, set within beautiful open spaces and close to improved local amenities. Nicola continues: “I have always been fond of Horsham, I lived here for most of my life with my parents so I know the area very well – my boyfriend does too after spending nine months in our family home! I wanted to be closer to my family as my sister also lives on the edge of Horsham, so I

won’t be very far from them. I was already keen to move to the area and the village of Southwater is charming so when I saw Broadacres I just thought, ‘wow, this is perfect’.” Southwater boasts an attractive village centre which combines modern amenities with traditional charm. Everything you need is on your doorstep including a supermarket, doctors’ surgery and plenty of options for eating and drinking with friends or family. Nearby Horsham town is extremely well served with a huge array of shops, including specialist independent boutique shops sitting alongside high street names as well as over forty-five bars, pubs, restaurants, cafés and coffee shops designed to suit all culinary tastes. Nicola adds: “Chris’ parents also live in a Berkeley development and after years of visiting them we’ve seen the quality of their home and the excellent customer service provided. What drew me to the Robin was the open-plan layout of the kitchen which has provided a fantastic amount of space for both us and our chocolate Labrador, Ozzy. I love our new home, especially the finish and quality specification and would definitely recommend Berkeley to anyone.” As well as being surrounded by beautiful countryside, residents will benefit from being well connected. Horsham train station is just ten minutes from the development which offers excellent rail links into London Bridge and Victoria taking less than an hour, while major airports are within easy reach. Prices start from £400,000 for a three-bedroom home. Volunteering Opportunities Registered Charity No. 1158780 Please note that from April 1, 2018 as a result of funding changes from Horsham District Council HAMSVA will no longer be promoting volunteering in the district. For all volunteering opportunities after that date please visit www.horsham.gov.uk/communitysupport/ community-support/community-development/voluntary-sector-support . Would you like to gain some valuable work experience or offer your valuable experience to your local NHS? Horsham Hospital is looking for volunteer administrators. Duties will include helping the administrator with filing patient notes, Making up files for new patients, archiving - filling out forms on the computer stating what is added to the archiving boxes, photocopying paperwork for the nurses to use with patients The minimum commitment for this role is six months after training. No qualifications are required except to be friendly yet professional and happy to work in a possibly noisy environment with children. The hospital also needs administrators to take on a similar role with its wheelchair service and with health visitors, where you would be making up health promotion packs for clinical staff to take to visits, photocopying and updating booklets. If you prefer the great outdoors, how would you like to help preserve the beautiful countryside we enjoy in Sussex? The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) Sussex is looking for volunteers across the county to help preserve its beauty. They need a planning assistant to help monitor planning applications in the local area, identifying applications of concern and helping the local team to submit relevant comments and objections. The charity is also looking for general volunteers to work on a wide range of activities, including fund-raising, biodiversity, campaigning, social media, general administration, etc. if you have a specific interest or expertise that might be applicable to their work in protecting the Sussex countryside they would love to hear from you. Winston’s Wish is a charity which supports children who have been bereaved by the death of a parent. They need volunteer fund raisers to support at their events in the Southeast Some things you might do are to meet and greet participants and spectators, help set up and clear down the event, provide information at a Winston’s Wish event stand, answering queries and hand out refreshments or even wear the famous Winston Bear costume! AGE UK Horsham is looking for volunteers to help people coming home from hospital who may feel lonely and isolated and who would benefit greatly from practical and emotional support and confidence building. The NSPCC is looking for volunteers to help with a bucket collection at the Horsham Tesco on Wickhurst Lane on Friday 23 March – even just a couple of hours of your time would be hugely appreciated. Your support and the money raised could help fund the NSPCC’s Speak out Stay safe programme, which delivers age-appropriate workshops and assemblies to children aged 5-11 about how to recognise the signs of abuse and to understand where to go if they need help. If you want to know more about the opportunities above or are thinking of volunteering and want to know what’s out there, just log on to www.hamsva.org.uk/opportunities and explore the many ways in which you can get involved in your community.

Horsham Cycling Companions revel in Chapeau trip to le Tour Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter A group of Horsham Cycling Companions relished their week away visiting the Tour de France. Sporting shirts from Horsham Redkiln Close Brewery, Chapeau, and, importantly armed with some of their bespoke Tour de France beers, the group set off on the overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo. After a brief stop to savour a little of France

taking on Uruguay in the World Cup they cycled on to the gite of Horsham Football Club Chairman Kevin Borrett and his wife Judy, to be welcomed by their 101 year old neighbour. Next day, joined by Kevin and Judy’s daughter Beth and son Sam, they caught up with Stage 1 of the Tour at St Gilles Croix de Vie, dining on fresh sardines. Returning to the gite for some swimming and chilling they took in the England Sweden game, Chris Holmes telling the District Post: “We

celebrated Sam’s birthday with some verses of Joyeaux Anniversaire and a substantial BBQ before heading west to Beauvoir sur Mer, dealing with a puncture and broken chain along the way. After a few more miles we were concerned to get a call from Brittany Ferries telling us that, because of technical problems needing repair, our return ferry had been transferred from St Malo to Cherbourg – involving a hasty re-jig of our itinerary!” The group from Horsham –

Chris, Wendy Holmes, Margaret Thompson, Will Arinze, Geoff Bragg, Howard Neal and Ben Rose pedalled on with Beth and Sam Borrett covering around 80 miles a day interspersed with some train journeys and staying at Airbnbs to get to Redon for Stage 4 of the Tour, Chris Holmes saying: “The Tour is a unique event – there is a massive build up and a fantastic atmosphere but it passes through in a flash! The great thing, though, is to get on the pitch after the Tour has moved on, to take in a little of what the riders have been through. This was our first trip to the Tour and we got back to Horsham unscathed, only having had to manage a few minor mechanical challenges. Fortunately the weather was a little breezy and cooler than the UK.” Beth Borrett added: “It was good fun and we cycled really well together,” while her mother Judy said: “It was great having them all there at our gite!” At their post trip reunion back at Horsham’s Chapeau Brewery the group enthused about their experiences on their

visit to le Tour, swapping tales of previous cycling journeys – another trip surely beckons? Meanwhile, speaking of 32 year old Geraint Thomas’ stunning first Tour win – Britain’s third winner, following in the tyre tracks

This was our first trip to the Tour and we got back to Horsham unscathed of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, giving us our sixth win in seven years - Chris Holmes told the District Post: “Geraint’s reaction on the penultimate night of the Tour was exactly what sporting achievement is all about – full of emotion and disbelief. He’s been a favourite of mine for some time, Olympic success then happy to ride in the services of others – now it’s his turn to take the glory: a great lad and a great story!”

Manenti spins Roffey back to top of the table

Saturday July 28 – Sussex Premier League Roffey 249-9 declared (53.2 overs) – Cuckfield 99 all out (33.3 overs) Roffey won by 150 runs – Roffey 30 points – Cuckfield 8 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter After just one win from their previous five games it was business as usual for Roffey last Saturday, when they inflicted a crushing win over ailing Cuckfield. In May Cuckfield came to Roffey and were bowled out for 103, Roffey winning by 10 wickets and

the replay was equally one sided. Presented with a very dry wicket at the impressive, sloping ground with the tree on the playing area and the backdrop of the imposing 16th century listed Cuckfield Park House, Roffey elected to bat after winning the toss, feeling that their quartet of spinners could be a handful if the wicket got even drier. After three maidens, Ben Manenti’s brisk 24 comprised six boundaries and at 97-1 and 187-2, a target of around 275 was suggested. Theo Rivers built a proper opener’s innings with sure-footed confidence taking over from initial watchfulness, leading to his second century of the season, containing 16 fours and a six. When Rivers was out for exactly 100, Rohit Jagota scored 51 at better than a run a ball and Usman Khan came in with freedom to press on, making a rapid 33 with 3 maximums, after which the innings rather fizzled out. An injury forced Nick Patterson off the field mid spell, but Josh Hayward took 5-79, Roffey confidently declaring, giving themselves 54 overs to bowl Cuckfield out, correctly surmising that 250 was a stiff challenge. Cuckfield were without opening batsman Joe Ludlow, nursing a broken foot, so much depended on their Aussie overseas player, Sam Whiteman, fresh from a match-winning 153 not out last week. With a warm gale howling across the elevated ground, dust was blowing off the wicket, sightscreens were anchored by railway sleepers and chairs in front of the pavilion were airborne, but Cuckfield created the seemingly sound platform of 55-2 - until with Manenti and Luke Barnard bowling in tandem wickets tumbled. Once Barnard had bowled the expansive White-

man there was little more than token resistance, Hayward’s 20 not out apart. Barnard finished with 2-33, but the bowling prize went to Man of the Match Manenti, who, once in his stride looked likely to take a wicket with every ball, making the batsmen play, his excellent 8-39 being his best figures for Roffey. Manenti modestly just said: “The wind helped a bit – holding up the ball.” Coach Simon Fearnley told the District Post: “That was a good declaration by Davo – he trusted his bowlers and Ben was giving the ball plenty of air up over the batsmen’s eye line.” Matt Davies added: “I thought 250 was enough - and as soon as I saw what Ben and Barney were doing with the ball I knew it was!” Luke Barnard said: “The ball was ragging square – which showed what a very good innings Theo played,” while Theo Rivers commented: “It wasn’t easy batting out there – it was difficult early on, so after doing the hard work I wanted to make it pay.” Roffey’s win puts them back on the top of the table, 14 points clear of Brighton. On Saturday Roffey return home to welcome their friendly near neighbours, beleaguered Ifield. Then, following last Sunday’s postponement, this Sunday, they play at Horsham Cricket Club in the ECB National Club Twenty20 Cup Area Finals - against Surrey Cup holders Guildford at noon, followed by the winner taking on either Alton or Lordswood (Champions of Hampshire and Kent respectively) for a place in the Regional Finals. Roffey’s game at Brentwood in the Quarter Final of the England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship, scheduled for this Sunday, will be rearranged, with details to be announced.

Premier League round up Saturday July 28 - Sussex Premier League Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter The Horsham and Roffey games are reported on elsewhere in the sports Section of your District Post this week – in the other matches, at Middleton the hosts won the toss and batted first against Brighton & Hove – Matthew Reynolds and Patrick Colvin each making 60 and Mahesh Rawat 53, however from 165-2 they finished on 230-8 from their 58 over allocation after Simon Hetherton had taken 5-45. Replying, Brighton’s championship hopes were dented - they were well placed on 163-3 but, although Isaac Taylor made 38 and Bryce Hounsome 37, Luke Wells could only muster 6 and once Matt Machan was out for 77, Brighton slumped to a 24 run defeat, Craig Fowle taking 4-69. At Horntye Park

Billingshurst beat Lindfield at the double Saturday July 28 - Sussex League Division 2 Lindfield 115 all out (29.4 overs) Billingshurst 116-0 (28.2 overs) Billingshurst won by 10 wickets – Billingshurst 30 points – Lindfield 0 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst returned to winning ways with a clinical hammering of bottom club Lindfield, whom they also beat in May’s away fixture. At Jubilee Fields last Saturday, Lindfield elected to bat but it was a case of misplaced optimism as, against Billingshurst’s opening attack of Andy Miller and Andy Barr they had no real answer. Lindfield soon found themselves 9-3 and worse quickly followed, Barr dismissing both openers before Miller took the next six

wickets. A mid order partnership hinted at respectability, yet it took a ninth wicket stand of 58 to get Lindfield past 100, but when Ben Williams and Captain Tom Haynes combined to take the wickets of Harry Chaudhary for 37 and Max Kidman for 20, Lindfield slumped to 115 all out. Miller finished with 6-29 and Barr 2-39. When Billingshurst responded Lindfield employed five bowlers, but nobody could separate Tom Weston (73 not out) and Haynes (unbeaten on 27), Billingshurst winning by 10 wickets in eight balls less than Lindfield faced. Former Billingshurst Captain Ben Williams told the District Post: “Andy Miller has been an unlucky bowler for us this season with quite a few near misses, but this week he bowled well again and the ball clipped the top of the stumps instead of evading them. It’s good to have him bowling in partnership with Andy

Barr and great to see them getting out the top order. We batted well, too – Tom Weston displayed confidence and Tom Haynes played the anchor role – in fact at one point the Billi boys thought our skipper was looking for a draw, but fortunately Tom Weston scotched that idea! Switching to limited over win matches will suit our strengths because we’ve got five good bowlers, so we’ll see what happens in the five remaining matches of the season.” After the maximum point win, Billingshurst are fourth, on level points (242) with Haywards Heath. Mayfield are top on 315 – two points clear of former Premier League side Three Bridges. On Saturday Billingshurst venture into East Sussex to take on relegation threatened Bexhill, whom they bowled out for 75 to win by 9 wickets at Jubilee Fields in June.

visitors Eastbourne elected to bat, and were bowled out for 261, Captain Jacob Smith topscoring with 62, while Alastair Orr, promoted up the order, made 49 and Jordan Turner 30 despite Adam Barton’s 5-57 and Josh Beeslee’s 3-75. Hastings had 58 overs to get the runs, but although Jake Woolley posted 48 and Joe Billings 37, they lost by 64 as a result of Joe Pocklington’s 6-59. Meanwhile, at Fulking, Preston Nomads, with home advantage, won the toss and took first strike with Captain Jeremy Green’s unbeaten 55, Kashif Ibrahim’s 39 and Jason Poole’s 36 steering them to 209-9 from 58 overs, restricted by the Hatchett brothers – Bradley taking 3-36 and Lewis 3-72. But, although Leo Cammish made 45, the fragility of current champions East Grinstead’s batting returned to haunt them and they subsided to 81 all out in the face of Navin Patel’s 9-53.

Saturday July 28 - Sussex Premier League Horsham 255 all out (54 overs) Ifield 165 all out (40.2 overs) Horsham won by 90 runs – Horsham 30 points Ifield 12

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Earlier in the season, at Cricketfield Road, Horsham beat Ifield by 7 wickets and at Ifield Green last Saturday they completed a

comprehensive double over the struggling newcomers to the Sussex Premier League. Batting first after winning the toss, Horsham put on 90 for the first wicket, and although three batsmen soon departed, openers Tom Clark and Tom Haines, both scoring 56, laid a solid foundation, following which thirties from George Garton and Paul Williams got Horsham up to 255, despite Dan Smith’s 5-68 and Harnoop Kalsi’s 3-76. 255 was always likely to be a challenging target considering Ifield’s recent track record, yet, they reached 50 before their second wicket fell. Then, though wickets went down with alarming regularity, only Mahad Ahmed with 40 and Akshay Ramani (37) showing any real sign of adherence as Joe Ashmore with 5-60 and Nick Oxley and Paul Williams

with two wickets apiece worked their way through Ifield’s fragile line up, to win by 90 runs with

The two Toms – Clark and Haines batted very well, setting up the game almost 16 overs to spare. Paul “PJ” Williams told the District Post: “The two Toms – Clark and Haines batted very well, setting up the game. Ifield were without their injured overseas player, Andrew McGorian and, although Dan Smith put in a good performance with the ball, we benefited

from some poor fielding, really. The wicket was taking spin and they had rather a long tail, so they were unable to threaten our score. Our boys were impressed by the horse chestnut trees round the ground – it was a case of ‘we came, we saw, we conkered’!” The win places Horsham fourth – three points ahead of Preston Nomads and 29 behind current runners up Brighton. Eastbourne are third, while – with five games left to play - at the foot of the table Ifield have 119 points, 20 adrift of penultimate club Hastings, who are 50 shy of Cuckfield (8th). On Saturday Horsham return home to welcome relegation beckoning Hastings, whom they beat by three wickets at Horntye Park in early June.
