Scorching weekend weather saw thousands flock to Loxwood Joust With activities and entertainment taking place every half hour from 10am to 6pm, the jousting arena was surrounded by fans as the sound of thunderous hooves and four magnificent Jousting Knights ran the tilt whilst displaying breath taking horsemanship.

With Sir Hector of Horsham aided by the dastardly Sir Kenneth, challenging Sir Thomas of Loxwood for his honour and lands, the battle for victory was both in the saddle and on the ground with skilful sword fighting. The quick witted banter and shameful displays of cheating by Sir Hector and Sir Kenneth saw the crowds booing, cheering, and laughing, as Sir Thomas of Loxwood and Sir Luke fought with speed, talent and chivalry. However, Sir Hector’s celebratory moves when he was declared the weekend’s champion, were challenged by a crestfallen Sir Thomas who vowed to come back victorious and ‘knock him from his horse’ in the second weekends tournament.

The festival which prides itself on adding new attractions each year did not disappoint, with many visitors placing blessings upon the wishing tree and learning about the nature spirits from the Faerie Goddess Mother in the woodland Faerie Realm. In addition, couples and families celebrated love and friendship in handfasting ceremonies, and enjoying the sumptuous food and captivating entertainment in the luxury of the mediaeval banqueting marquee.

the Joust said ”This is our first year at the Joust and it is a big hit with all four of us. We were not quite sure what to expect, but there is just so much to see and do here.

The children have loved the glitter and wound face painting, making a small pewter sword, watching the blacksmith work, talking to the witch and hammering out their names onto the small copper shields. Everyone is just so friendly and the people in the mediaeval village were great at answering all of our strange questions. My husband and son loved sword school and my husband really enjoyed using a real metal sword! We all adored the excitement of the Jousting Tournament and each wanted a different knight to win. We will definitely be back next year.”

Whilst many took full advantage of the cool respite in the woodland area, the birds of prey made full use of the spiralling thermals, with Zulu the yellow billed Kite soaring to over 50meters before plummeting out of the sky to capture the lure being swung by the falconer.

In addition, larger than ever this year, some 200 plus knights, 50 bowmen and more than 20 gunners formed the two sides of the ardent battle between Duke of Buckingham and the Sussex Rebels.

Fighting hard and keen to integrate himself with the King of England, the Duke of Buckinghamshire fought well to protect his wealthy kinsmen and with cannons firing, the Sussex Rebels were defeated.

Fire service issues water safety advice as summer holidays get underway West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is urging people to take care in water over the school holidays, and stay safe.

The ongoing hot weather means plenty of families will be planning to go swimming in various locations across the countryside, but some areas can pose a risk.

Around 190 people lose their lives on UK and Irish coasts each year, and over half never even planned to enter the water, according to the RNLI. Cold water shock is extremely prevalent despite heatwaves this summer and British seas and rivers are cold enough to leave you helpless in seconds.

Adrian Carter, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Group Manager said: “With the hot weather not going away anytime soon, it’s likely many people will be out enjoying the sunshine on the beach or at lakes, rivers and swimming pools around the county, but your priority must be to stay safe.

“It is often poor safety water practices out in the countryside that pose the most risk, and in some cases not following these can endanger lives.

“If you want to go swimming, make sure you go to a supervised site with lifeguards on duty, look for signs and advice about the specific dangers at the place where you are, and be mindful of currents. If you get caught by a current, swim with it and call for help.”

Swimming in appropriate locations is still good exercise, but the fire service also has a number of safety tips for in the water.

They include: • Always look for warning and guidance signs • Swim parallel with the shore,

not away from it • Never go into the water after consuming alcohol • Do not enter fast flowing water • Be aware of underwater hazards • Always take someone with you when going into or being near water • If you start to feel cold, get out as quickly as possible • Be mindful of currents – if in trouble, swim with the current and shout for help • Be aware of your own strength and get out if you start to feel tired West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is at the heart of West Sussex County Council’s Communities and Public Protection Directorate, working to support communities to become safer, stronger and more resilient through a combination of prevention, protection and response activities

How to keep your cool walking in the heat: Advice on safe summer walking from the Ramblers

The Great British Summer really has turned out to be just that this year; perfect for enjoying the outdoors. But while the hot dry weather is ideal for taking some wonderful walks with no risk of your sandwiches getting soggy, it’s important to take some simple precautions to stay safe while walking in the heat, says the Ramblers.

The walking charity is sharing its advice on important precautions to take to make the most of your summer strolls, stay safe and healthy and protect the countryside too, as the dry landscape has increased the risk of fires.

Tom Platt, director of advocacy and engagement for the Ramblers, said: “It’s great to be able to take advantage of this fantastic summer weather to go out walking, but it’s really important to take a few measures to stay safe in these unusually high temperatures.

“As always, we encourage anyone enjoying our beautiful countryside to behave responsibly to help protect our environment. And as the landscape is so incredibly dry, it’s more important than ever to be extra vigilant for fire risks. Walkers can help by keeping an eye out for things like broken glass that can start fires and reporting any fires that appear to be unattended as quickly as possible.”

Ramblers top tips for hot weather walking: With the mercury regularly reaching 30 degrees, avoid walking at the hottest times of day, between 11am and 3pm. Plan your

walks in the early morning or the evening and take frequent breaks in the shade.

Carry plenty of water with you - more than you would usually in cooler weather - and sip regularly to avoid getting dehydrated.

Don’t wait until you feel thirsty.

Make sure you apply plenty of sun cream (a minimum of SPF 30 is ideal).

Wear loose, lightweight clothing so that you don’t overheat and wear a hat, even on overcast days, to keep the sun off your face and head.

Consider doing a shorter walk than usual if it’s really hot, or work out a spot where you can cut your walk short if you need to.

Keep out of the sun in the hottest parts of the day However unlikely it seems, remember the weather can change. Pack a light waterproof jacket and remember that if you’re walking in the hills, it is often much cooler higher up than lower down, so an extra layer can be useful.

In these very dry conditions, help keep the countryside safe by looking out for fire risks and report unattended fires or activities which could cause fires to the emergency services.

Don’t forget your four-legged friends. If you’re taking your dog along on your walk, make sure you take some water for them too, and let them have a lie-down in the shade when they’re looking tired.

The scheme aims to give vulnerable people the confidence to remain independent, by providing a network of shop locations which people can access for help and assistance if they are feeling afraid, frightened or confused.

Championed by a team of self-advocates from The Butterfly Project and Strawford Centre Horizons Groups, the initiative provides shop staff with basic training on

how to help a vulnerable person.

The location is then identified with an ‘Our Town’ window sticker, so people needing a little more assurance and support will know that they can go into the shop and ask for help if they need it.

Most of the time somebody, who is feeling vulnerable, will just need reassurance by way of a smile, a friendly face, or the chance to grab a few minutes to calm down.

Occasionally, some people may need more assistance, so those who sign up to the initiative will be issued with a card that has a contact number for a chosen family member, support worker or carer who can be contacted if they need a greater level of support.

New Rotary President

Penny Barnes It was recently announced that Penny Barnes has been made the new President of Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club.

Penny joined Rotary as a founder member of Brighton & Hove Breakfast Rotary Club (the first dual gender Club in our District) in 1993 and having moved to Thakeham, she joined the Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club in 2000.

She is Sussex born and bred, having been brought up at North Farm, Washington; lived and worked in Hove for some time and finally moved back to her beloved Sussex Downs. Penny worked for some years as an Estate Agent in Hove and then for the Sussex Mutual Building Society; a 3 year stint as an asst producer for Miranda Birch’s afternoon programme at BBC Radio Sussex and finally 7 years as the Sussex Fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Amongst

events she organised for MCCC were the very popular annual Son et Lumieres, two at Wiston House, one at Sompting Abbots and two at Michelham Priory.

Penny and her husband Michael have 5 sons between them and six grandchildren living between Aberdeen, Hong Kong, Singapore, Ashington and Thakeham.

For her year, Penny said: “Rotary has changed tremendously over the years, scrapping rules which would not suit our younger generation with their long working hours. We try to help those in our Community, whether they be the young or the old, not only to donate or help financially, but to be involved as much as we can, where we can, in meeting their needs. At the same time, we have a wonderful fellowship within our Club, which makes all that we do, whether it be our monthly cinema evenings, fundraising events, singalong afternoons at Sussex Down, such fun to be involved with. I am honoured to lead Rotary’s efforts to make a real difference in our area.

“We are very fortunate to have a number of new members who have joined our Club over the past couple of years, and it is important that people from our area know that our Club is always looking for like minded members who want to enjoy fellowship and to help in a variety of ways within our Community.”

Local Samaritans support National ‘Big Listen’ Samaritans sharing their listening skills this summer

Volunteers from Horsham and Crawley Samaritans campaigned at Horsham station last month, as part of a nationwide push called The Big Listen to raise funds for Samaritans and show how really listening to another person can be the first step to saving a life.

A Number of volunteers from the local branch set up stands at the station during peak times to try and raise awareness of the importance of helping someone talk through their problems by really listening to them.

The Samaritans emphasised SHUSH listening tips for commuters – Show you care, Have patience, Use open questions, Say it back and Have courage.

Volunteer Eileen Sharpe from

Samaritans’ Branch in Denne Road Horsham said: “Up to one in five adults have thought about taking their own life at some point. When people feel as low as that, they really need to be able to talk about their feelings, which means they need people to listen.

“With The Big Listen, we were encouraging people to look out for one another, and if you see someone who may be struggling, ask how they are. It’s something we don’t often ask people, or we ask very superficially and never expect an in-depth answer.”

Branch Director Roger Dugdale explained: “That’s usually what Samaritans do – we stop and take the time to actually ask people how they’re really feeling and give them

the opportunity to really talk about it, something we don’t often do in our daily lives.

“We never give advice, because we think people generally know the answers to their problems themselves and, that talking things through, they can un-jumble what’s going on and seek their own solutions which are better than being told what to do, and much more powerful.”

Eileen Sharpe is the local Branch Partnerships Director. She provided an insight into the work she does: “ As well as answering the telephone, emails and text messages, people also talk to us face to face in the Branch. Within the Partnership role we support people in other ways too; we visit our local Salvation Army and Crawley Open House as well as training listeners in Lewes Prison.”

In June, Sussex Mark Masons hosted a day of PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) testing by PCaSO at Horsham, for men from the local community aged over 45. The tests were provided free by Sussex Mark Masons, and, of 154 men tested on the day, 5 were found to have abnormally high readings, 3 were borderline, and the rest were within the normal range for their age.

Martin Wilson, in handing over the cheque, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to provide this useful service for the community and am hopeful, in doing so, that we may have been able to save some lives.”Roger Bacon of PCaSO, on receiving the cheque from Martin Wilson, thanked him and the Sussex Mark Masons for generously supporting the PSA testing event. He said: “This money will help our charity continue with our programme of free PSA test events all around Sussex.”

The event ran very smoothly on time throughout the day, with complimentary comments from men who attended. In all, a very successful event which organisers hope to repeat again next year.

Chairman drops in to Horsham Repair Cafe Horsham District Council Chairman, Cllr Peter Burgess, dropped into Horsham’s Repair Café in Worthing Road on Saurday (4 August).

The Repair Cafe, which was founded by local residents Jill Shuker and Carrie Cort, opens on the first Saturday of the month and offers repairs to a variety of items, including clothing, bags, computers electrical items and a whole host more.

Burgess said: “The cafe was very busy and bustling with lots going on.

“Besides repairs, the café also offers refills of cleaning products and other items, which helps to reduce and reuse packaging. It was good to hear that they will soon be able to supply dry food goods.

“Additionally, advice is given on energy use and how to switch to more renewable energy sources.”

Horsham children’s charity raises £65,000 with Cream Teas campaign

Horsham-based charity Action Medical Research is delighted to announce that its 2018 Cream Teas campaign has raised around £65,000, with donations still coming in!

Emma Morgan, Action’s Head of Events, said: “We are thrilled. We cannot thank everyone in Sussex enough for their kind generosity.

Every one of our boxes sold really does make a difference.”

Action is a UK-wide children’s charity, which funds desperately needed research to tackle the diseases that devastate the lives of so many of our children.

Ambassador. She lent her support to this year’s campaign and is delighted with the results: “Action asked if I could helped support this year’s campaign and I jumped at the chance!

“I’m just so pleased that thousands of people across the UK got the chance to enjoy a little time out, indulge in a delicious treat and feel good knowing that their kind donations could really help save tiny lives.”

The 2018 national campaign was launched in April and gave people the opportunity to buy cream tea boxes online until 15 June.

Each box contained:

“The Action Cream Teas campaign is really starting to become a calendar event for people and I can’t wait for next year!”

Action has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952, including helping to introduce the first polio vaccines in the UK, developing the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and testing the rubella vaccine.

The charity is currently funding research into areas including premature birth, epilepsy, asthma, scarlet fever, cerebral palsy, brain cancer and some rare and distressing conditions.

New game to help families get a good night’s sleep The NHS in Sussex has teamed up with West Sussex County Council and Focus Games to help reduce the impact of poor sleep on children across the county.

Sleep issues affect around 40% of children and young people, and an increasing number of children are being diagnosed with sleep disorders.

In West Sussex, specialist health visitor Ruth Silverman is addressing this issue by looking at innovative ways to help professionals working with children and families to learn more about the importance of sleep for children.

Ruth, in partnership with Focus Games, has developed The Sleep Game, a board game training resource, designed to help professionals working with children and families improve their knowledge about sleep; such as health visitors, school nurses, nursery and early years staff, and children’s centre staff.

Ruth said: “In recent years I’ve been focussing on improving sleep awareness and training for a range of professionals in West Sussex. The Sleep Game supports this training and is a fun way of learning new knowledge and skills for any professional working with children.”

In times of need and doubt, parents usually turn to a range of professionals for advice on their child’s health or sleep issues. Providing these groups with practical information and relevant training on children’s sleep will help them to improve their knowledge and confidence and ensure that children and their parents benefit from safe and useful advice on sleep.

Governors wanted at Billingshurst Primary School Billingshurst Primary School are seeking people from the community to join their governing body.

There are currently two vacancies for co-opted governors. Anyone over 18 can be a school governor – you don’t have to be a parent with a child at the school. Our governing body includes parent governors, who are elected by the parents at the school. School governing bodies exist to help their school deliver the best possible standard of education to all pupils.

The most important qualities for being a governor are enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in education. You don’t need teaching experience, but it’s useful to bring skills from other areas of your life, for example if you work in finance, law, premises management or human resources these skills can be used to support the school. Governors are responsible for overseeing the

management side of the school: strategy, policy, budgeting and staffing. They ensure that the school runs as effectively as possible, working alongside senior leaders and supporting teachers to provide excellent education to the children.

Being a school governor means a commitment to attending governing body meetings (during school hours), which consider issues such as setting the school vision, mitigating financial risk and scrutinising educational outcomes. They are also involved in the school community, acting as critical friends to the head teacher and senior leaders.

According to the charity Governors for Schools, one in 10 governor posts are currently vacant with the shortfall as high as one in four in some rural schools.

School governors are one of the largest volunteer workforces, and around 300,000 people currently serve as governors of the 25,000

mainstream schools in England.

School life is never static. At Billingshurst we have a committee structure, all governors sit on two committees, as well as attending a school visit and the full governing meeting once a term. Voting now open for Most Deserving Grandparent award in West Sussex Highwood Mill are hosting their first Most Deserving award, giving recognition to grandparents in West Sussex who are going the extra mile for their families.

Horsham’s most recent retirement development put out the call for people to nominate grandparents, who go above and beyond, for the chance to win afternoon tea for four at Highwood Mill.

Rachel Richards, of Highwood Mill, said: “We were delighted with the quality and number of nominations received. It was lovely to read how so many grandparents really make the difference. We have managed to shortlist the entries to three but we only think it is fair if we leave it to the public to decide who should be the winner.”

Full Steam Ahead! Vintage & Steam Show at the Weald & Downland Living Museum Take a step back in time with the nostalgic sights, sounds and bustle of a traditional steam festival!

On the weekend of 18 and 19 August, visitors to the Weald & Downland Living Museum in Singleton, near Chichester, can enjoy viewing a fantastic range of steam engines and vehicles. Ride on a traditional steam-driven carrousel, dine on delicious food and drink in the food village, and listen to vintage music at the Museum’s stunning 40-acre site in the South Downs National Park.

Horsham Battle of the Bands nearly upon us The 2018 Horsham BotB Festival Weekend is nearly upon us! The last big outdoor gig of the summer will take place in the Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park on the weekend of the 18 & 19 August, featuring three separate competitions and three headline performances from last year’s winners.

The summer holidays have been wonderful - yet some people are so looking forward to 6 September… What’s going on???

The first Thursday in September sees in the new term for Christ’s Hospital Choral Society, whose singers can’t wait to get the music out for their next concert. This involves work by Purcell, Butterworth and Elgar; their beautiful tunes will echo around St. Mary’s Church in the Causeway on 3 November.

While the group of around 80 basses, tenors, altos and sopranos make a pretty good sound as they are, the choir would be delighted to invite more singers to join them. The choir present a wide range of music at their four annual concerts, held at St. Mary’s and at Christ’s Hospital’s

fabulous Chapel and ‘Big School’.

Thursday rehearsals, too, are at the school, although normally in a more modest venue. In addition, the choir host a workshop early spring, led by - often renowned – guest conductors. Regular Musical Director is Alex Hodgkinson, who is not only very talented in musical terms but who also manages to crack a joke, and bring about a happy and relaxed atmosphere, while getting excellent results.

These are all good reasons to consider joining the choir, and here are some more. You’d make friends while you sing; it’s a very social activity. Singing increases oxygen levels and produces Happy Hormones. All the benefits of eating cake but without the calories!

Singing is satisfying; rehearsals as well as those concerts – they’re

very exciting! And finally, over the year the choir support a number of causes, so while you have fun singing your heart out, you are raising money to support charities like St. Catherine’s, Macmillan, Chase, and more.

Tempted to join? There are no scary auditions, but it helps if you can sing in tune. Costs are £55 per year, and rehearsals are on Thursdays at Christ’s Hospital, from 7.30 – 9.30. First rehearsals start with drinks to welcome everybody back, this year on 6 September.

The choir will then start practising in preparation for November’s concert in the Causeway’s lovely St. Mary’s Church.

Saturday August 4 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division AFC Uckfield Town 2 3 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In stark contrast to last season – when YM opened their campaign coming a four nil cropper against Pagham – they began this season with an excellent battling win at The Oaks against much-fancied AFC Uckfield Town.

At times last season scoring did not always come easy for YM, but the fluctuating seven goal thriller kept spectators on the edge of their seats as both sides kept pushing for a win. This was a tough examination for YM but they came through with flying colours, yet it was Uckfield who opened the scoring through Bailo Camara in the 23rd minute. Luke Donaldson, then equalised four minutes later to leave the sides on level pegging at half time. The second half was a proper goalfest with the ball going into the

net five times. Soon after the restart new signing Alex Barbary – formerly with Horley – headed home a Tony Garrod cross, only for Uckfield Player Manager Anthony Storey to draw the sides level with a disputed penalty.

Both teams kept pressing, and YM quickly re-took the lead when Dan Mobsby converted a free kick, but YM’s advantage was short-lived, Uckfield’s Matt McLean restoring parity at 3-3. With four minutes left on the clock and YM somehow summoning energy in the fierce, sapping heat, Barbary latched onto a rebound from Louis Rogers in the Uckfield goal to give YM all three points. In the closing moments, Tony Garrod hit the bar and the post came to Uckfield’s rescue, YM Manager Peter Buckland praising YM’s commitment and persistence in the face of sustained pressure from lively Uckfield in a captivating yo-yoing contest.

On Saturday YM switch to FA Cup action with a visit to St Paul’s Stadium Rotherhith, London SE16 to take on Southern Counties East side Fisher FC in the Extra Preliminary Round.

Sunday August 5 – ECB National Vitality CLUB T20 South Area Finals Day Roffey 126-8 (20 overs) - Guildford 103 all out (17.4 overs) Roffey won by 23 runs Alton 108-8 (20 overs) – Roffey 112-1 (13.3 overs) Roffey won by 9 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In the round robin Vitality CLUB T20 South Area Finals, staged at Horsham Cricket Club, Roffey pulled off two trademark victories – the first a gritty, determined battle against Surrey Cup holders Guildford, the second a one-sided rampage against Roffey’s Hampshire counterparts - Alton.

In the Guildford game on the John Dew ground, Roffey were

in a good position at 65-2, but progress was slow. Several batsmen got off to good starts, before picking out fielders in the deep.

Chris Webb top-scored with 23 after being given two lives, before the innings faded from 97-4 to close on a seemingly inadequate 126-8, with insufficient late fours, despite the small boundaries, Coach Simon Fearnley saying: “We’ll need to bowl and field very well to win this one!” But that is just what Roffey did – Guildford, no longer in the Surrey Premiership – although they eliminated table toppers Reigate from this competition – began poorly, losing a wicket in their first over from a far too adventurous stroke.

Then, from 10-2 the innings stuttered to 47-5 including a fine running catch from Jibran Khan, but at 101-6 with overs in hand and a partnership developing,

few would have put their house on a Roffey win. Yet, after Jamie Atkins had taken earlier wickets, Luke Barnard, George Fleming, with two scalps in two balls, Theo Rivers and an exciting run out by Rohit Jagota accounted for the last four wickets between them for just three runs to pit Roffey against Alton on Horsham’s main ground after the Hampshire side had seen off Kent challengers Lordswood.

Against Alton the Hampshire side batted first, wickets falling steadily until local Horsham resident Ben Mortimer weighed in with 4 sixes and two boundaries in his 19 ball 40, but when he was bowled by Jamie Atkins – who took 3-22, including wickets with slower balls – there was little more to come. Opening the bowling, Mortimer dismissed Usman Khan, but that was as good as it got for Alton, Theo Rivers (70 not out) and Jibran Khan (24 not out) getting Roffey home with six and a half overs to spare. Theo Rivers told the District Post: “We were never going to lose that if we made sure that we didn’t concede early wickets, so we just batted for six overs and took it from there – and after dropping a catch I was determined to win. In the Quarter Finals, on Sunday August 19 (subject to confirmation), Roffey have a trip to Penzance – a round trip of some 570 miles – after the Cornish side made short work of Bristol. This Sunday, Roffey travel to Brentwood in the National Stage of the 40 over ECB Club Championship.

Starting brightly with Devon Fender going close, Heath’s Stuart Chester then got up well to meet Jamie Robinson’s left wing cross without success. The home side’s first attempt at goal came midway through the half when Spencer Slaughter‘s lob came to nothing. Minutes later Hassocks striker Liam Benson found space 20 yards from goal, but his low left foot shot went just wide. Just before half time a free kick from the left was floated to the far post, but it remained 0-0 at the break.

Hassocks began the second half strongly, Heath keeper Fox being called into action to

push away a long ball from the left, which Slaughter followed up with a right foot shot that went wide of the post. Then the hosts were almost caught out on the counter-attack when George Cousins whipped a ball in, but somehow the Hassocks keeper Harris made a fantastic acrobatic save to deny the Bears. With 20 minutes remaining Jack Wilkins was brought down 12 yards from goal by Maxwell Benson and got up to score from the resulting penalty. Heath continued to push for an equaliser and were rewarded when Fender - last season’s top scorer - hammered a left foot shot past Harris into the net. With the players tiring in the heat both sides strove for a win, Cousins, Fender and Chester all shooting narrowly wide. But, probably the easiest chance of the game came for Hassocks in the 87th minute when midfielder Alex Spinks was off target with the goal at his mercy. Roffey won the toss, inserted struggling Ifield and very soon had them 12-2, Leigh Harrison dismissing both openers. A promising stand then developed, eventually worth 52 runs, between two of Ifield’s most productive batsmen, Dan Smith and Mike Norris, and when they were both out in quick succession (Smith for 36 and Norris for 22), Captain Jack Groves and Sam Dorrington each got into double figures, but it proved to be a false dawn. Ben Manenti and Luke Barnard made short work of the lower order and tail as Ifield collapsed from 111-5 to 121 all out in a flurry of injudicious stroke play.

taking 2-37, while Barnard took 6-53, telling the District Post: “The wicket was dry and turning - I was bowling a leg stump line and there was a bit of playing across it, wafting up some simple catches.” A leisurely tea was taken at 2-20 and, realistically it was just a case of how long it would take Roffey to knock off the runs, especially as they were without their opening bowlers – Andrew McGorian with a serious knee injury and Jamie Pearce. Uncharacteristically, Theo Rivers was out second ball of the innings, but that was just a temporary hiccup as Manenti plundered 46 off 28 balls before Rohit Jagota and Jibran Khan accelerated to get Roffey home with thirties apiece and the best part of 50 overs to spare, aided by some despondent-looking fielding lapses. Ifield are on 120 points, 20 fewer than Hastings and 79 below Cuckfield.

The four remaining round of League games will be on a 50 over win/lose format, next Saturday Roffey visit relegation-threatened Hastings whom the beat easily at home in June, then they entertain Brighton & Hove (third), travel to second-placed Eastbourne before welcoming Horsham (fourth) on September 1st, the last day of the league campaign.

Relegation candidate Hastings won the toss, elected to bat and at 54-1 were seemingly well-placed to post a reasonably demanding target. But, while the hitherto productive Joe Billings reached double figures along with his Captain, Tom Gillespie and Ryan Hoadley, Hastings slumped to 80-7, Will Beer and Joe Ashmore effortlessly working their way through the frail batting line up. Jed O’Brien top-scored with 39, but Beer finished with 3-28 and Ashmore 5-34, the 142 run requirement never being likely to pose a serious challenge.

Billingshurst bowled Bexhill out for 75 in June and although last Saturday’s result was closer, Billi were delighted to record back to back league wins, moving them up to third in the table after they had been put in to bat at the Polegrove.
