Horsham’s A Team Thursday August 16th was a red letter day for many of our district’s A level students – with results confirming another tremendous performance from local schools. Christ’s Hospital celebrated excellent results, a highly impressive 53% of all Pre-U and A Level grades achieved were equivalent to either an A* or A, with 75% A*-B. There were notable individual achievements with success in a wide range of academic subjects, including Art, Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, History, Languages, Physics, Politics and Psychology with students taking up places at Cambridge, Oxford and other top universities. Simon Reid, Headmaster of Christ’s Hospital commented: “Once again our students, closely supported by their teachers, have produced results through considerable determination over a long period, alongside engagement with a rich programme of opportunities outside the classroom. Congratulations to our students and the entire Christ’s Hospital community for producing these results.” At Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley hailed the college’s ‘stellar results’ saying: “I am extremely pleased with the outstanding results – the best ever! An astonishing pass rate of 99.7% and 59% A*-B grades is a fantastic achievement for our staff and students. Everyone works so hard and at times during the year it is understandable when energy flags, but we pushed on and have big smiles on our faces as a result of all that effort and determination” Collyer’s Chair of Governors David Skipp was

equally thrilled, adding: “These results are superb! Well done everyone, Collyer’s just goes from strength to strength!” Exceptional results were achieved in Dance with 94% at A*/B, Art Textiles with a staggering 91%, Food and Nutrition 86%, French students also impressed and Maths and Psychology students posted 75% and Art Graphics 73%. Competition for university places is strong, and the pressure on young people is greater than ever; it is wonderful to see this group of ambitious young women taking the next step and following their dreams. They have bright futures ahead of them! My appreciation and thanks go to all their teachers; their passion and commitment are key in providing the excellent teaching and support which enables the girls to achieve these outstanding results”. Farlington girls will be representing the school at university destinations across the UK in a diverse

professional sword fighting display, tug of war, and children’s dressing up – all with a helping hand from Loxwood Joust. Parents prepared themselves for a soaking in the stocks, as the children threw wet sponges at them. Joining in the fun of the morning was Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, and Cllr Joy Gough of North Horsham Parish Council. This important green space is situated in the heart of Roffey, in

the North Horsham parish. It lies adjacent to Roffey Football ground, the Memorial Cricket Ground, and Broadwood Recreation Ground. The redevelopment of the play area is the first stage of a wider plan to landscape the whole area, and renew the youth facilities, to improve the experience for local residents. S106 developer funds have contributed to these improvements and will continue to do so. Commenting on the new play area, Cllr Chowen said: “This major redevelopment work represents a substantial investment by Horsham District Council in this wellknown recreation area. “Earlier in April this year we went out with a public consultation to ask your views on what you would like to see in the area and we are sure you will agree that the refurbished space and imaginative new play equipment are a massive improvement. We look forward to adding some more elements to the play area in the near future. “I thank all of you who helped us to shape the new play area and it is a joy to hear that this area is now being enjoyed by more people in the Roffey community than ever before.” If you have any queries about the play area please contact our Parks & Countryside team on 01403 215256 or email parks@horsham.gov.uk

Five summer fire risks you can’t afford to ignore Harry Woodage is an expert in fire safety at Allsaved, which has headquarters in Sussex. Here, he discusses five potential causes of fire during the summer and explains how to protect against disaster. Fire is a threat at all times of the year, and every season brings its own particular dangers. During the summer months, hot dry conditions can spark a blaze, causing devastation to buildings and putting lives at risk. Air Conditioning: More and more offices are installing air conditioning to keep their staff cool in a heatwave, and AC units are becoming increasingly popular in the home too. The importance of regular servicing and maintenance of air conditioning equipment cannot be overemphasised. Worn out filters can accumulate flammable dirt and dust particles, and if heat builds up due to faulty wiring or other malfunctions this could cause a fire. It’s also important to mention that air conditioning units should be included in a fire risk assessment of any building. Their job is to circulate air – exactly what you want on a hot day - but if fire breaks out the air con will literally fan the flames. It’s vital therefore to ensure that a process is in place to shut down air conditioning in the event of a blaze in your building. Barbecues: On a warm day, there’s nothing better than a barbecue in your garden, or a company cook-out with colleagues. Whether you use a charcoal or gas barbecue, fire safety should never be far from your mind. Ensure that barbecues are lit at a safe distance from sheds, trees, shrubs or waste bins. Place the barbecue on flat ground, and keep a bucket of water or sand nearby in case of emergency. Change gas cylinders outdoors in a wellventilated area. Do not pour petrol or any flammable liquid on a charcoal barbecue to get it going. Use

firelighters instead, and bear in mind that you might have to be patient and wait a few extra minutes for that perfectly cooked burger! Summer Storms: Lightning strikes on buildings are rare, but every year they cause destruction to scores of properties in the UK. If lightning hits your home or office, you’re at risk from falling masonry and power surges, electric shocks and fire. At the first sign of a storm, unplug electrical equipment and stay away from windows, doors and exterior walls. Even if a building seems untouched after a storm has passed, it’s wise to check loft spaces, attics or office store rooms in case of a smouldering fire. Waste: Bin bags, old furniture, discarded packaging . . . waste like this can build up outside a building and present a fire risk, especially in the summer months when the slightest spark from a discarded cigarette or an unattended barbecue could start an accidental fire. Strong sunlight refracting through glass can also ignite combustible materials, so if you have a row of bottles waiting to be recycled, don’t leave them on a window sill where they are likely to catch the sun. Wildfire: Wildfires are a growing problem in the UK, as the tinderbox conditions of summer 2018 have shown to devastating effect. Our Fire and Rescue Services tackle about 70,000 grassland fires a year, so it’s no wonder that wildfire was recognised as a ‘significant hazard’ and added to the national risk register of civil emergencies in 2012. Most UK wildfires are confined to heaths, moors and forests, and do not threaten human life. However, scientists believe that with our changing climate, wildfires will become increasingly destructive, spreading to properties in areas that were once thought safe. As the spate of wildfires this year has shown, this is a clear danger that needs to be taken seriously.

Members of Partridge Green Traffic Action Group (TAG) were delighted to receive a donation of £250, from the local Village Cafe on 9 August, towards their campaign to install traffic-calming measures in the village. The group was formed earlier this year, after a public meeting to discuss residents’ concerns following years of increased traffic flow, dangerous driving, and speeding through the village. Bolstered by the recently approved application for a reduction

in the speed limit to 30mph along the B2135 Bines Road, the group has recently submitted their own application to West Sussex County Council for ‘pinch-points’ along the High Street and Littleworth Lane, along with a new 20mph speed limit. Nicky De Little, TAG Treasurer, accepted the award from Village Cafe’s Claire Phillips and Debbie Holland (pictured), and said: “We are so grateful to the Village Cafe for their donation towards the vehicle-activated speed aware-

Partridge Green residents have a ‘near-miss’ story - from tractors mounting the pavement to children narrowly avoiding being hit by speeding vehicles as they cross the road - and our worry is that soon one of these will be a serious accident.” The Village Cafe is a community venture run by St. Michael’s Church, Weald Community Church, and the Methodist Church, and held on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Local worthy causes are welcome to apply for the quarterly award by contacting Claire Phillips at claire@clairephillips.com

Council launches new training programme to boost independent retailing across Horsham District

Horsham District Council has received funding to deliver a training and support programme for independent retailers across Horsham District. The training will focus on improving their customers’ experience, as local retailers adapt to rapidly changing consumer buying habits. The Council has commissioned retail training specialist, Chris Billington from Progressive Results Training, to deliver a fully funded Horsham District Independent Retail Training and Support Programme : ‘Your Customer Experience’. The programme will consist of four key elements: Facilitated workshops: All of the District’s 200+ independent retailers will be invited to participate in one or more of six workshops offering thought provoking guidance and tips on how to better influence their customers’ experience. Bespoke rapid improvement sessions: These will be one to one sessions and will take part in the retailer’s own premises. The work will establish ways for the retailer to improve specific performance areas and to ensure that all commercial opportunities are being identified and exploited. Display enhancement grants: The overall programme includes

a grant allocation of £22,000 towards premises improvements for eligible businesses that have taken part in the Bespoke Rapid Improvement Sessions and workshops. Businesses can apply for a match-funding grant to refurbish and improve their shop front and the grant can also be applied to internal improvements such as shop lighting, display fixtures and fittings. Your Customer Experience Awards – The magnificent seven: The programme will culminate in an awards evening in May 2019 with seven categories for independent businesses in Horsham District. The awards will be judged through a combination of public nominations and expert panel judging. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, said: “This tailored programme will help our local retailers by taking a fresh look at the experience they offer their customers and find new opportunities in the process. “Our council is one of five councils across West Sussex offering support to independent retailers, enabled by the County’s Strategic Investment Fund. “It is clear that this is a critical time for high street retail with much needing to change for retailers to remain viable in the

future. “I encourage as many independent retailers as possible to sign up for this free training and I look forward to seeing the results.” Chris Billington, of Progressive Results Training, added: “I have a very down to earth and enabling approach to training and am delighted to be working with Horsham District Council to deliver this fantastic new programme for retailers across the towns and villages of Horsham District. “I would like to meet and help as many local independent retailers as possible and urge them to sign up for the “Your Customer Experience” workshops and instore training sessions.” This free programme will run from September 2018 to April 2019 at venues across the District. To book a place please email Chris Billington at chris@progressiveresultstraining.co.uk or call him on 07840392732. The retail sector has changed substantially in recent years, and businesses face numerous new challenges with online and offline consumer trends evolving constantly. Add to this that, often, independents can’t afford primary location rents and are located in secondary shopping or rural areas, with lower footfall, and trading even more difficult. Many also lack an effective online presence or simply haven’t had the chance to update their retail skills. As a consequence, many independent retailers (both nationally and locally) are struggling to survive and compete. It is, therefore, ever more important for these businesses to build their retailing skills, to maximise sales opportunities in today’s environment. More details on the specific workshops and how to apply for the display enhancement grants will be released in due course. In the meantime, any retail businesses wanting to take advantage of the free skills building opportunities, or just to find out a bit more, should contact Chris on chris@progressiveresultstraining.co.uk or call 07840392732.

Pack up your golf bags, gather your friends and head out for a day golfing at the New Horizons Appeal Charity Golf Challenge in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice. Taking place on Thursday 6 September 2018 at Rusper Golf Club, Rusper Road, Newdigate, the golf challenge remembers Linda Catlow, who was cared for by St Catherine’s.

Linda’s family have run golf events in her memory for six years and raised more than £35,000 for their local hospice. The golf challenge invites teams of four to come along for a great day out and play for Linda’s Trophy. This year’s charity golf challenge begins with a Shotgun start at 9.30am and will be a Texas Scramble format, allowing golfers

of all abilities to try their luck on the golf course. Coffee on arrival and a buffet lunch will also be included. Optional buggies and breakfast are also available by booking directly with Rusper Golf Club on 01293 871871. Suzanne Connor, New Horizons Appeal Co-ordinator, said, “Money raised from this event will help provide local terminally ill people in your community with expert care when it’s needed most. Currently, St Catherine’s can only care for one in three local people who need it, but with your support, we can be there to care for everyone. This charity challenge is a great chance for you to show off your golfing skills and socialise with others who enjoy golf, whilst also supporting your local hospice.” The New Horizons Appeal is a voluntary fundraising group which has supported St Catherine’s since 1989. Over the years, New Horizons fundraisers have raised more than £2 million, with the help of local people who attend their prestigious events, which also include a lunch club and Autumn Gift Fair at Knepp Castle in September. If you would like to take part in the charity golf challenge, please email: newhorizons@stch.org.uk or call 01293 447367. Entries are £200 per team (for four players over 16 years old) and mixed teams are welcome.

YMCA shaded in close encounter at Chichester Saturday August 18 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Chichester City 2 1 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After winning their first three matches – two in the league and one in the cup – YMCA suffered their first defeat after holding Chichester for much of the close fought game only to concede the late winning goal. Always worthy opponents, Chichester had won their first two league games but exited the FA Cup the week before. And, against YM, they created early chances before Tony Nwachukwu fired over from a close range offside position and Guy Harding headed wide. Nwachukwu then drew the best out of Jordan Matthews in the Chichester goal, but it was the hosts who scored first when, in the 27th minute, Jimmy Wild latched onto a cross, YM keeper Aaron Jeal pushing away for Scott Jones to finish off from close quarters. YM responded, putting the City defence under pressure, but Harding, Ollie Gill and Alex Barbary could not quite convert the openings created, before City tested the YM back line. Coming out 1-0

down after the break, Luke Donaldson – substituted for Gill – had an early chance ahead of a YM free kick testing City. Jeal then deflected a Rob Hutchings attempt for a corner, before safely negating another foray from the same player. YM’s persistence then paid off when they equalised through Dan Mobsby’s long range strike midway through the second half. And, YM might have gone ahead, only for Tony Garrod’s free kick to skim the bar, followed by another free kick stressing City. In the closing minutes City, enlivened by substitutions, came close to scoring, before, with just two minutes of full time remaining, Jones confirmed why he was their leading scorer in the previous campaign by converting Wild’s supply to renew City’s lead. YM, though, might have drawn level again, but the woodwork denied Harding. But, City were also pushing hard and just ahead of the final whistle, the YM defence had to be at its best to deny them a further goal. YM switch to FA Cup Preliminary Round action on Saturday with a visit to Ashford, Kent, before welcoming Loxwood to Gorings Mead in the league for an 11am kick off on Bank Holiday Monday (August 27th).

Nine goal thriller gives Heath first win of season Saturday August 18 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 5 4 Lingfield Football Andy Crisp & Martin Read - Sports Reporter There was late drama at Broadbridge Heath, Devon Fender completing his hat-trick to win the game for the Bears in the 8th minute of added time. The game was played at frenetic pace from the off with end to end football, George Cousins beating Lingfield keeper Dan Burnett to put Heath ahead. But the Lingers responded immediately with the experienced Chris Ransome creating chances before heading a goal in the 16th minute. Midway through the half Heath regained the lead when, after Ben Chowney had been denied by Burnett, Fender drilled a shot into the net. Jamie Robinson rattled the Lingfield crossbar but just minutes later the score was level again when Thomas Stead rifled a shot that Mark Fox in the Heath goal couldn’t deflect, the score remaining 2-2 at the break. The second period started in similar vein, Robinson advancing down the left and picking out Fender, who shot low into the corner of the net to restore Heath’s narrow advantage. Things got even better 10 minutes later when Cousins shrugged off a defender to shoot past Burnett to give Heath some breathing space at 4-2. But, on 67 minutes the visitors reduced the deficit when a cross from the left found Sam Clements in space on the edge of the penalty area, the midfielder calmly slotting past Fox. Then, with 12 minutes remaining Lingfield equalized again, Jake Horn fortuitously launching a dipper over Fox. Injuries stopped play

Photos by Clive Turner

for a considerable period, but five minutes into added time Fender was put through on goal, only for his shot to fly past the advancing Burnett and crash against the bar. Seconds later he was through again, left of goal, but his shot went inches wide of the post. However, Heath were not to be beaten - in the 8th minute of extra time Ben Hands, substituted for Cousins, played Fender through on goal again, but this time the striker

was taking no chances, dribbling the ball inside to beat the keeper and a defender and smashing it into the net from close range to complete his hat-trick, earning Heath their first win of the season. This was a real roller coaster for supporters, with many highs and lows, but culminating in home smiles all round. On Saturday Heath welcome Chichester City in the cup, after visiting them in the league on Tuesday

Horsham pull off first Bostik win of season Saturday August 18 – The Bostik League – South East Division Sevenoaks Town 1 2 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Until comparatively recently Horsham’s forays into Kent have not been particularly fruitful, but last Saturday they renewed their current liking of trips to the hop county with a win against Sevenoaks Town after exiting the FA Cup there on their last visit in 2016. In the second minute on the new 3G pitch Sevenoaks striker Ryan Fowler broke through but fired straight at Josh Pelling in the Hornets’ goal before Chris Smith made ground but shot wide at the other end and then was just off target with another attempt after Lee Harding and Rob O’Toole had also created

problems for the Oaks. But, Sevenoaks scored first – from a corner in the 18th minute – Sawyer blasting in from the rebound. Horsham, though, soon equalised when Smith’s effort was pushed out by Oaks’ keeper Ben Bridle-Card for Joe Shelley to convert with a diving header. Shelley and Smith then combined in attempts to give the Hornets the lead, but the woodwork intervened before the goal was narrowly averted. The hosts had an opportunity, too, but, fortunately interception of a defensive mix up came to nothing, ahead of Harding firing over and Charlie Harris being denied at close range. Then, Pelling kept Fowler at bay before Horsham’s Will Hoare hit the bar just before the sides went into the break one apiece. On the resumption an Oaks header came to nought before, in

the 54th minute, a Harris/O’Toole build up was converted by Harding to give Horsham what turned out to be the match winning lead. Both keepers prevented further scoring before Smith had a great opportunity to make entirely sure of a Horsham victory, but it was not to be and in the tense final minutes Horsham withstood last ditch Sevenoaks pressure to come away with their first three points of the season, ending last season’s Southern Counties East League Champions, Sevenoaks’, Bostik League debut in disappointment after their recent 6-1 cup drubbing of Lordswood. On Saturday the Hornets venture into Surrey with a visit to Carshalton Athletic in the FA Cup, then, on Tuesday evening (August 27th) they return to Bostik League action at their temporary Lancing home – against Haywards Heath.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham had the misfortune to encounter the Sussex premiership’s leading run scorer, James Hockley, in a rich vein of form. Fresh from the highest score

in Sussex league cricket this season - 240 - the former Kent professional notched up his fifth century – 139 - taking his seasonal aggregate to 954 runs. But, Hockley was the only difference between the otherwise evenly matched sides. Eastbourne, accustomed to batting on their good wicket at the Saffrons, had no hesitation in electing to bat first on Horsham’s equally excellent batting surface and after putting on 65 for the first wicket, they were even better placed at 152-2 with Hockley giving a master class on how to build an innings with team mates batting around him. Mika Ekstrom and Joe Ashmore went on to take two wickets apiece, but a target of 302 was very demanding, especially as Horsham had suffered the late withdrawals of Beer and Haines in the Sussex squad for the next day, Garton’s foot injury also preventing him from playing. When Horsham replied, Tom Clark set off like a train, reaching 50 with 10 fours, but when his innings ended after just 27 balls, Horsham’s out of form middle order faded away as Jacob Smith and Scott Lenham – son and grandson of Sussex stalwarts Neil and Les - took seven cheap wickets between them. A last wicket partnership of 68, the highest of the innings, between Jamie Thornely and wicket keeper Michael Harms took Horsham to semi-respectability but Eastbourne managed to part them with 25 balls remaining. Horsham are fourth, one point behind third-placed Preston Nomads, while Eastbourne remain second 13 points shy of leaders Roffey. On Saturday, in their final home game of the season, Horsham welcome Middleton (8th).

Premier League round up Saturday August 18 - Sussex Premier League Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Elsewhere in the Premier League all three games were very one-sided. At Saint Hill hosts East Grinstead chose to bat and after being 5-3 and 72-6, an unaccustomed Hastings win was a real possibility. But, an 83 run eighth wicket stand between Ian Sturmer and Bradley Hatchett took Grinstead to 216-8 off their 50 overs. That proved to be many more than enough when former Sussex pro Lewis Hatchett, bowling unchanged, took 9-18 – the best bowling figures in Sussex League cricket this season – off 8.3 overs, with seven of his victims either bowled or LBW, as Hastings succumbed to 52 all out off just 16.3 overs. Only Harry Scowen showed a token of resistance. At Mid-

Roffey remain top with comprehensive win Saturday August 18 – Sussex Premier League Roffey 233 all out (49.5 overs) Brighton & Hove 165 all out (38.4 overs) Roffey won by 68 runs – Roffey 30 points – Brighton 12 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter On an overcast, dull day Roffey batted first at their Crawley Road ground and although Ben Manenti was caught behind early on, Theo Rivers (40) and Jibran Khan (30) batted positively to post 98-3 at the half way stage. Rohit Jagota then entertained with a run a ball 89, accompanied by skipper Matt Davies. Just after the full ration of batting bonus points was secured Jagota was caught in the deep and the innings subsequently fizzled out. But, a target of 234 was likely to be enough considering the slow outfield and weakened Brighton

side (Phil Salt and Luke Wells being required by Sussex and Matt Machan coaching the ladies at Loughborough). Brighton’s reply got off to the worst possible start, Jogota taking a wicket with the first ball of their innings. Opener Bryce Hounsome went on to top score with 37 and four of

We’ve got a quartet of bowlers well suited to the pace off wicket, so anything over 200 was likely to be a big ask the lower order made seemingly promising contributions, but no other batsman reached 20. Wickets fell all too regularly, Jagota and George Fleming being the principal destroyers with three

wickets apiece, Roffey winning before 6pm with overs to spare. Roffey Coach Simon Fearnley told the District Post: “When we won the toss there was an argument for batting second, but we decided to see what the first 12 or so overs produced and take it from there. We’ve got a quartet of bowlers well suited to the pace off wicket, so anything over 200 was likely to be a big ask.” With two league games left, Roffey head the table by 13 points over Eastbourne, who also won, and the two sides meet at the Saffrons next Saturday - before Roffey return home for the last game in the campaign – against Horsham, on September 1st (when Eastbourne travel to East Grinstead). This Sunday Roffey have the best part of a 500 mile round trip to Penzance in the National Quarter Final of the ECB National Vitality CLUB T20 competition. Penzance are currently third in Cornwall’s Premier League with 10 wins from 16 games.

dleton Cuckfield won the toss and batted first, scoring 208-8, Tom Weston leading the way with 71, backed by 54 from Sussex’s Abi Sakande. In reply Sean Heather made 42, but Middleton were shot out for 126 in 40.5 overs with four bowlers sharing the wickets. And, at Fulking, Preston Nomads elected to bat, Liam O’Brien’s 70 helping them to 230-9. Ifield then staggered to 55 all out with eight of their batsmen accumulating just eight between them – the same as the extras total. All of the Nomads bowlers had a good day, especially Navin Patel with 4-9 from his seven overs. Hastings and Ifield, the bottom two clubs in the Premier League, will be relegated. In Division 2, Billingshurst’s chances of returning to the Premier League evaporated when they were bowled out for 117 by Mayfield, who look odds on for promotion into the top flight with current Division 2 leaders Three Bridges.
