Let’s help turn a tragedy into much needed support martin read

Reporter

What is the worst thing that you can imagine happening to your family? Could you cope, and how would you react? Caroline is appealing to local residents to help her honour her mum, Hannah Leonard, who was murdered in her London flat in February. Caroline is creating a charity – Hannah’s Wings – to support families bereaved by murder, manslaughter and suicide. Caroline tells us: “The lengths my family has had to endure to pick up the pieces of our lives after Mum’s death have been almost unbearable – I want no other family to have to suffer as we have. For that reason I am appealing for help from the wonderful Horsham district community – government support is massively lacking in all areas for victims of murder, there is a compensation system put in place

by the government, however this can take up to two years to come through – the funds are not available when you need them most.” When the tragedy happened Caroline was away on the first day of a holiday with her four children. She received a phone call from the police to give her the shocking news and she was not even given the chance to see her mum one last time. Caroline’s goal is to offer support for murder victim families and to protect them from financial pain in the wake of their loved one’s passing and she says: “If I can prevent even one family from experiencing what I have gone through then I will feel some comfort in light of all that has transpired and I have set up a GoFundMe page to start Hannah’s Wings.” Caroline has raised 2,500 pounds and needs to double that amount to become a registered charity – so she is looking for support. Please come along to her CHARITY FAMILY FUN DAY - from noon until 6pm at Barns Green Playing Fields, Muntham Drive, RH13 0PT on SATURDAY

Horsham’s Philippa Charman fundraising for experimental stem cell treatment in Russia

Horsham resident Philippa Charman (far right and centre) is pictured with her friends Alicia and Alison who organised a cake sale to help raise money so she can go to Russia for groundbreaking stem cell treatment in an attempt to combat multiple sclerosis which she has endured for over 20 years. The auto-immune disease has

affected almost everything she does and she has to cope daily with all kinds of complications including pain in muscles, joints and nerves, cognitive problems and issues with her balance as well as debilitating chronic fatigue. No longer able to drive or go to work, Philippa is facing a slow and steady progression of disability.

The experimental Hematopoietic stem call transplant treatment which is not available on the NHS, will use chemotherapy to kill-off Philippa’s immune system. As she recovers, stored stem cells will be gradually introduced back into her body, hopefully resulting in an intact nervous system with no MS. There are no guarantees, but with an uncertain future ahead, Philippa is desperate to give this potential life-line a try and it’s a positive sign that she has already been accepted on to a series of trials so there’s every hope that the treatment may halt, or even reverse the condition. Alison and Alicia are well known locally for their incredible baking creations, including cupcakes elaborately decorated with colourfully painted mermaid tails, dinosaurs and glittering cookiemonsters and when they learned that Philippa needed £40,000 to go to Russia for treatment they spent 4 days baking solidly, and the sale, which took place in the foyer of The Pavilions in the Park, raised in excess of £500 towards Philippa’s target. To support Philippa on her journey of healing please visit her fundraising page at www. gofundme.com/sgqwh-daringto-dream.

those who make a positive difference within the care industry. The report names talented individuals who show dedication, a positive attitude and unrivalled expertise. Dora was appointed deputy manager at Skylark House in 2017, and has been praised for her dedication to providing excellent care and leading by example. She is a Dementia Champion and works tirelessly to ensure residents have their voices heard, and play an active part in life at the home, especially those who struggle to communicate. She has also successfully devised ‘Grab & Go’ folders, which contain details of residents’ medications, allergies, along with relative’s contact details, in case a resident needs emergency medical support. This initiative has helped reduce stress for residents when on hospital visits. Dora said: “I am delighted to have been named a ‘Leader of Tomorrow’ by Care Home Professional. I enjoy making a difference to people’s lives and really care about the residents and team members at Skylark House, so to be recognised for my work is just fantastic!” Devendra Lallchand, home manager at Skylark House, added: “Dora goes above and beyond expectations and is a true role model for those working in care. We cannot thank her enough for her dedication and commitment to the residents, it is clear that her assistance has made a real difference to the people living at Skylark House.” After graduating in Information Technology, Dora realised her passion and talents were in the care industry, after spending time supporting older people as a care assistant. In 2016, she was ap-

pointed team leader at Care UK’s Skylark House, where her hard work and dedication has seen her progress to her current role as deputy manager. Determined to help develop outstanding care services, Dora is currently taking part in the Care UK’s Emerging Leadership programme, after being recommended by her regional director. Situated on St Marks Lane, Skylark House has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. Crowds gathered to launch the District’s food festival at Big Nibble celebration

Food lovers united at the weekend (1 and 2 September) in glorious sunshine to enjoy all that Horsham District’s food and drink businesses had to offer at the annual Big Nibble event in Horsham’s Carfax, organised by Horsham District Council. Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, said: “The Big Nibble is our traditional curtain raiser for the month-long Horsham District Food and Drink Festival and this year’s event did not disappoint. “I wish to thank all the local

food and drink providers who came along to showcase their products and share them with the many visitors who came to enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds, of these unique two days. “The event did much to promote these hardworking businesses, and the local economy in general, especially rural growing communities. “I encourage you all to now get a copy of the 2018/19 Food and Drink Guide, and check out the many events and promotions on offer throughout the whole of September, as part of our District’s ongo-

ing food festival.” Street food trader, Rob Rookes from Ginger Rookes, who had a stall at the event said: “Cracking weekend, as always, at the Big Nibble. It’s always great to see everyone out in the sun, feasting away on our Street Food Spoils in our home town of Horsham.” David Bell, of local sausage company Bangers Galore, added: “It was a great event, well done to all involved. “The Big Nibble is always very well organised and we, at Bangers Galore, are proud to be part of it. We sell out every year. It was totally Bangin’!” As a first this year, in the run up to the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, it was fitting that The Springboard Fringe Festival, presented by Tomfoolery, hosted a range of performing acts. Everything from buskers, street performers, dance troops and magicians, performed to packed audiences around the Carfax Bandstand. All reflected the diverse nature of our District’s colourful culture. Also new this year, was Horsham’s Street Feast in East Street - an outdoor supper club where hungry guests could enjoy any of the dishes from surrounding restaurants in a banqueting setting. Urgent appeal for families to talk after patients die waiting for transplants

Families in West Sussex are being urged to talk during Organ Donation Week (September 3 to 9) as new figures show 35 people from the area have died waiting for a transplant in the last five years. Tragically, despite the fact more and more people are supporting donating their loved one’s organs, there is still an urgent need for more people to support donation. NHS Blood and Transplant is now urging more people in West Sussex to tell their families that they want to save lives through organ donation. Last year, 70 people in West Sussex had their lives saved by a transplant. If more people agreed to donate, more lives would be saved in West Sussex and around the country. Although the number of donors

is increasing, and the waiting lists are reducing, right now there are around 6,000 people waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant across the UK. During Organ Donation Week, the NHS is urging families to talk about donation with the message – ‘Words Save Lives’. Councils and organisations around the country are lighting prominent buildings pink, which is the colour of the modern donor card, in support of the country’s organ donation campaign. Anthony Clarkson, Interim Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “It’s tragic that so many people from West Sussex have died waiting for a transplant – what is shocking is that many of those lives could have been saved,

had more families agreed to donate organs. “People are dying every day because some families are not talking about donation. We need more families in West Sussex to say yes to organ donation, so that more lives can be saved. “We all know that organ donation legislation will change to a deemed consent system in England and Scotland in future years but the harsh fact is people are dying right now waiting for an organ and it will still be important for people to know your decision. “We don’t want people to die because of a fatal complacency that because you know you want to be an organ donor you presume your loved ones know it too. “Please, let your family know your decision and ask them if they want to be donors. Don’t leave your family guessing what you would have wanted to happen. “We know that many families feel enormous pride and comfort at knowing that their relative went on to save lives through the gift of organ donation.” Nationally, around three people die a day in need of an organ. Only a small percentage of people die in circumstances where they can donate, so every donor is precious. Millions of people are already on the NHS Organ Donor Register, join them today and tell your family you want to save lives. To register, please visit: atwww.organdonation. nhs.uk

Drink Safari of foodie market stalls celebrating the amazing variety of produce our county of Sussex creates. Food and drink stallholders were more than happy to provide free food samples, and multiple tipples of beers, wine and gin were on offer. On both Saturday and Sunday, the Carfax hosted the ever popular Live Cookery Theatre, where top local chefs, and producers, demonstrated their skills in the kitchen and shared some great gourmet tips and scrumptious dishes with their audiences. The Theatre transformed into a Gin Veranda later in the afternoon, with gin, wine and cocktail tastings.

Younger mouths enjoyed Messy Harvest by Horsham Churches Together in the Bishopric, and Horsham’s very own classic bus rally on the Sunday at Hop Oast Park and Ride, with shuttles to and from the Carfax, were a popular attraction. A Crafty Village was located in Market Square, and fans of beer and gin were spoilt for choice with two trails to follow around town all weekend, sponsored by Hepworth’s Brewery and Crates Local Produce respectively. Horsham colleagues help raise over £900 for children’s charity

For the second time in two weeks colleagues from the Arun Estates Customer & Property Care Department in Horsham have gone the extra mile for Action Medical Research. On Wednesday 22 August, team members took it in turns to ride on static bikes or rowing machines outside their offices in North Street from 8am – 6pm. Their aim was to once again travel 735 miles, which is the equivalent of Horsham to Malaga! This was a second attempt to fundraise, as Assistant Manager, Ryan Winn, explained: “We were determined to give it another go. We were in the bandstand in the Carfax on Thursday 9 August, but it poured with rain the whole day!”

The team set up their mini outdoor gym and repeated the challenge, and were not disappointed with the public’s support. Ryan continued: “We’ve used this location to fundraise for Action the last two or three years and it’s amazing how many people wander past and ask us what’s going on! “We got quite a few beeps from passing traffic and lots of positive messages of support, which was brilliant! I’m just pleased the weather was a bit kinder to us this time around!” The combined total amount raised by Arun Estates for Action Medical Research was just over £900. The UK-wide children’s charity funds desperately needed re-

search to tackle the diseases that devastate the lives of so many of our children. It has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952 including helping to introduce the first polio vaccines in the UK, developing the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and testing the rubella vaccine. Last year, Arun Estates held a similar ‘Big Event’ in Horsham (https://www.action.org.uk/ press-release/local-businesscolleagues-cycle-row-edinburghparis-equivalent-action). And in July, two members took part in a 24-hour ‘squash-athon’ (https://www.action.org.uk/ press-release/horsham-squashplayers-raise-around-ps1000action-medical-research) at the Bluecoats sports centre in Christs Hospital. Action’s Head of Relationship Fundraising, Toby Tenant, said: “Arun Estates has been supporting Action for a number of years now. You certainly can’t question their commitment to raising funds! “On behalf of the charity I’d like to thank everyone who took part in these two fantastic challenges, as well as those who gave generously and contributed to their impressive fundraising total.” Action Medical Research is currently funding research into areas including premature birth, epilepsy, asthma, scarlet fever, cerebral palsy, brain cancer and some rare and distressing conditions.

Terry Waite CBE gives an emotional speech

Terry Waite CBE enthralled Sussex residents as he recounted stories of his extraordinary life during an exclusive event which recently took place at Highwood Mill, Horsham. Over 100 people arrived to hear Terry’s talk, which was the second in the free ‘Audience with’ series held at Highwood Mill to showcase the inspirational activities and facilities on offer at the luxury retirement development. During the event, Terry recollected his traumatic experience of being held captive in Lebanon for nearly five years. He talked about his books - Taken on Trust, Solitude and Out of the Silence -

explaining that they were mostly penned in his head whilst he was being held captive as a coping mechanism to keep his brain active every day. Astonishing audiences even further, Terry explained that he initially went to Lebanon to try to negotiate with the Islamic Jehad Organization for the release of existing hostages. Terry was assured safe conduct, and yet the group went back on their word and took him hostage on 20th January 1987, where he remained in solitary confinement for the first four years. Rachel Richards, of Highwood Mill, said: “It truly was an honour to hear such a selfless, fascinating,

honourable man speak at Highwood Mill. I feel humbled to have heard his account. The audience was entirely captivated to the point that you could have heard a pin drop - he was just utterly inspirational. “The room came alive with excitement after his speech, and I have never seen so many people engaged in a group Q&A session. We received some lovely feedback from our residents and guests, so it’s fair to say that an enjoyable morning was had by all.” The final ‘Audience with’ event will take place on Monday 10 September, and feature television actor, director and writer, Christopher Timothy, who isurrently appearing on EastEnders as Ted Murray. Highwood Mill is looking forward to hearing all that Christopher has to say, to an intimately sized audience. Highwood Mill encourages anyone interested to reserve their free ticket now, to avoid any disappointment. All talks have an arrival time of 10.45am. Fact Not Fiction Films short film secures cinematographer and Horsham locations

Fact Not Fiction Films has confirmed that their upcoming short film ‘Missing a Note’ has welcomed professional Cinematographer, Donna Wade, to the team. Donna graduated from the prestigious National Film and Television School with an MA in Cinematography in 2017, and has since shot numerous short films, music videos and commercials. Donna is originally from Northern Ireland, but lives and works in London. She is a member of Illuminatrix Rising, a collective group of emerging

female cinematographers based in the UK. Following a number of location viewings, Fact Not Fiction Films has confirmed the film will be shot locally at the beautiful Sedgwick Park House and Farlington School. Sedgwick Park House is a privately owned home, set within 100 acres of rolling Sussex countryside. This stunning location will act as a perfect backdrop for ‘Missing a Note’, and will act as the home of renowned opera singer, John

O’Connell. Farlington School is a private girls school set within 33 acres of beautiful parklands on the borders of Sussex and offers a perfect setting for the character of Molly attending school. Director, Beth Moran, said: “We are very excited to have Donna Wade on board to shoot ‘Missing a Note’. She’s an exceptional talent and I’m looking forward to working closely with her. As far as the locations go, we are extremely lucky to be able to film ‘Missing a Note’ in such beautiful venues as Sedgwick House and Farlington School! And of course being local to Horsham feels all the more special.” Producer, Tristan Loraine, commented: “As a company it’s great to be going back to film at two wonderful locations, which we have filmed at before with two of our previous feature films: ‘31 North 62 East’ and ‘A Dark Reflection’.” Any profits generated will go towards Alzheimer’s and Dementia research. The public can support and get involved with this short film project in a number of ways by visiting the film website at: www. missinganote.com or gofundme. com/missinganote

The results are in about food hygiene!

The results of a poll by West Sussex Trading Standards have revealed that, of more than six hundred West Sussex residents, 98% felt that it should be compulsory for business to display food hygiene ratings. Results also showed that 41% would not eat at a business that does not display their rating voluntarily and 57% would only buy from a business rated 4 (Good) or 5 (Very Good). Ratings range from 0 (Urgent Improvement Required) to 5 (Very Good) and are typically given to places where food is supplied. The results of the poll will be used to influence local food businesses and encourage them to improve their rating. It is currently voluntary in England for food businesses, including restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, hotels, and supermarkets, to display their hygiene rating. Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “These results are incred-

ibly interesting and show just how important food hygiene ratings are to West Sussex consumers. “It clearly shows the standards expected of food businesses and will hopefully encourage those who fall short of the higher ratings to book a place on one of our courses and learn how to improve.” Peter Aston, West Sussex Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “These results show it makes commercial sense for local food businesses, not only to secure a high food hygiene rating but also to ensure it is prominently displayed. “If they are struggling to reach the criteria, I would strongly encourage booking a place on one of our business support courses to help them secure the custom of West Sussex residents.” Trading Standards run Gain and Maintain a 5-star rating workshop in partnership with Horsham District Council Environmental Health Officers to help food businesses improve their hygiene ratings. Also included is the training and materials a food business needs to implement a robust allergens control management system – on average over 10 people a year die from anaphylaxis due to consuming an undeclared food allergen at a catering business. The next course is taking place on Friday 12 October from 10am to 1pm at Centenary House, Worthing. Places can be booked here: https://www.westsussexcpd. co.uk/courses/bookings/pathways.asp?pid=58&pathway_

that serve them. It’s a good idea to try out the journey a few times with your child beforehand to build up their confidence. For younger or more nervous children, you could talk to them about where the bus goes and how long it takes to get to school. You could also draw the route and teach them about bus safety. Our friendly drivers on the school run understand these back-to-school jitters, so if something does go wrong, such as your child missing their stop,

For those that aren’t announced, teach your child the name of the bus stop where they’ll need to get off. Metrobus’ Managing Director Martin Harris said: “I know many parents will be frantically dashing around buying school shoes and uniforms and worrying about how their child will cope at a new, often larger, school next month. “We can take at least some of

Our drivers are experienced and friendly and they’ll make sure your child gets to school safely and on time.” We’ve tried to make buying your child’s bus ticket straightforward as possible. Discounts are available to children aged 5 to 15 and they vary depending on age and where you live. You can buy tickets on the bus in cash; using a child key smart card, or using our mobile app.

New direction for Roundstone Caravans Few businesses can say they’ve been around for almost 90 years, let alone that they’ve belonged to the same family over all this time, but Roundstone Caravans, in Southwater, is the exception. Founded in 1930 by Sussex resident and touring caravan devotee, John William Whitehouse (Bill), Roundstone Caravans first started out building and selling trailer caravans. Along with wife Beatrice, Bill lived on the site – where the company still stands today – in a large rectangular van, high off the ground on iron-tyred cart wheels. The business started well, but ground to almost a complete halt during the Second World War, when Bill relied on an income from the park’s five tenants. Following the end of the war, Roundstone Caravans flourished once more, and when Bill died in 1951, his grandson Bob took the reins. Fast forward over half a century, and Roundstone is now run by Bill’s great-grandaughter, Rosie: “I’ve been managing Roundstone for the past seven years. I had a business background and wanted to apply what I’d learned in my career to the family business. Some of our staff have been with us over 25 years and, together with them, we work to keep the family legacy alive, while ensuring we always move with the times.” Over the years, Roundstone has grown from strength to strength, and now not only sells touring and static caravans, it also has a fully equipped caravan service work-

shop, which carries out regular checks and repairs. The on-site accessories shop supplies caravan owners with everything they could possibly need, from Calor gas and camping must-haves to tables, chairs and soft furnishings. This year, Roundstone is taking a bold new direction by supplying a range of touring caravans by leading UK manufacturer, Compass. The move to Compass marks an exciting new era in the company’s long history, but it’s one that Rosie and the team are very optimistic about. “We were impressed by Compass’ cutting-edge solid technology,” Rosie explained, “Their British built caravans are high quality and durable, meaning they’re a great investment as they offer longevity and reliability.” While Roundstone is committed to moving with the times, the company still remains loyal to its roots, and when asked what she believes is the secret to the business’ success, Rosie explained: “What was important to my great-grandfather in 1930 is just as important to us today. At the heart of our business is ensuring our customers get the right caravan for them. We go to great lengths to match people up to the caravan, establishing which they’re going to get the most enjoyment out of, and which best fits their requirements. We put such a huge emphasis on our customer service, and I’m positive it is this that has earned us the reputation of being the go-to experts in

caravanning.” The new range of Compass caravans will be on display at Roundstone in Southwater from midSeptember. Rosie and the team invite anyone interested to visit the

park, where they will be welcome to view the caravans and ask staff any questions they may have. For enquiries please call 01403 730 218 or visit www.roundstonecaravans.com

Does your business give 1st class service? janette whitney Business Consultant www.whitneyassocs.co.uk

You can use customer service as a powerful way to set yourself apart from your competition. It’s one of the strengths a small business has and, by emphasizing customer service, you can compete with larger companies who may offer morevariety, lower prices, and other perks you can’t afford. Here are 5 maxims to make sure your business’ customer service is top notch. 1. Apologise, don’t debate If a customer has a problem, apologise and fix the problem. Make sure to let customers vent their grievances, even if you are tempted to interrupt and correct them. Then give them a refund, new item, or whatever will fix the problem. Debating or haggling over a refund creates ill will. Repair mistakes immediately. Keep in mind that a complaint about your company is an opportunity to turn the situation around and create a loyal customer. Obviously, there will be some customer requests that are too outrageous to comply with. If that’s the case, do your best to offer a moderate, appealing alternative. 2. Feedback keeps you focused Ask your customers to rate your service on a regular basis. This can

be done via a short questionnaire included with every product sold or mailed to key clients. Keep the questionnaire short so that it is not a burden for customers to complete, and make sure they know they can decline to participate. Always let customers know the purpose of the survey is to serve them better. If they fill out the survey and have no problems, it is a reminder of what good service you offer. If issues do arise, they can be addressed. 3. Always say “yes” This doesn’t mean giving up your personal will to your customers but it does mean finding a way to help customers with their requests. If you run a gift business you might wrap a present for an important client, even if you don’t usually provide gift wrapping. You might stay up late to finish a project if a client suddenly has a deadline moved up, or travel in a snow storm to meet a client even if it means an unpleasant trip for you. Always saying yes, means the words “that isn’t possible” should be forbidden from use in your business. You cannot afford to use them. If this sounds expensive and inconvenient, it is, but it is less expensive than losing a customer and having to spend money and time landing a new one. 4. Under promise, over deliver Make your customers believe they are important to you by always appearing to go the extra mile. Build a little cushion into a deadline and deliver early. Estimate

that a job will cost more than you think, and bring it in lower. Many small businesses make the mistake of reversing this maxim - over promising and under delivering. This is a true recipe for disaster. You may get the business, but your level of service will make it difficult to compete. If 24-hour turnaround is excellent service in your industry, don’t promise it in 12 just because the customer requests it. 5. Maintain Regular Contact The main reason why customers change their purchasing point is because they think you don’t care! Contact your customers often, just to say Thank you! The minimum time between contacts is 90 days, if you have not spoken to them in this time, they are no longer customers. Entertainment Martin Read - Sports Reporter Local resident David Hamilton is still enjoying an amazingly diverse career, having notched up almost 60 years in the entertainment business, with an extraordinary 13,000 broadcasts on TV and radio. He worked with Tommy Cooper, Benny Hill, and, especially in series with Ken Dodd – who christened David “Diddy” and gave him excellent advice. David has presented

Top of the Pops, read out the football results, been a newsreader and news reporter, compered the Rolling Stones and Beatles stage performances at the Palladium and the Albert Hall, toured with The Bay City Rollers and, more recently, with his own extensive show – Rock ‘n’ Roll Back the Years’. He has played sport with many well known faces, including charity football with Elton John and Rod Stewart and cricket with Ernie Wise and Roy Castle. And that’s just half of it: at

age 18 he wrote “Portrait of a Star” TV programmes – featuring Marlon Brando and Henry Fonda and contributed magazine articles, but what he is particularly enthused by is the development of popular music radio, in which he played an integral part. And, fortunately, David charts this in his captivating book “The Golden Days of Radio One”. Writing is in the Hamilton blood – David’s father was a journalist and so is David’s son – and the entertaining book takes readers through from David cutting his teeth with the British Forces Network during National Service in Germany. There, David said: “Servicemen want Rock and Roll, not the sedate stuff played for the officers!” That was 1959 and the experience gained enabled David to work for BBC radio, so by the time Radio One launched in 1967 he was a natural choice for the new station. Then, there was no commercial radio and no music channels on TV – only Radio One broadcast pop music in the UK, appealing to all members of the family from grandparents to grandchildren. Top of the Pops on TV was presented by Radio One DJs, whose audiences ran into many millions, making them as well known as the artistes whose records they played. David presented three hour radio shows, working alongside Terry Wogan, Tony Blackburn (for whom David was best man), Noel Edmonds and many more, all pictured in The Golden Days of Radio One, which takes readers on a fascinating journey from the pioneering days, highlighting the characters that were listened to from first thing in the morning until last thing at night. It is as if David is having a personal chat

with individual readers. David told the District Post: “I was so excited to present Top of the Pops, but the most I ever earned was 90 pounds a programme with millions of viewers - I earned three times that as a DJ for a pub in the Old Kent Road! But, then I was only paid 10 guineas for compering the Stones! It was great working with the big comics, although Tommy Cooper never stuck to the script, which was a bit of a nightmare. I opened supermarkets with Ken Dodd and went to his house. He came to see me in panto and said he’d take me out to dinner afterwards, but we ended up in a nearby fish and chip shop, where we had a tin of lager from Ken’s carrier bag – but he gave me priceless advice on how to play Buttons, which really worked.” David’s other great passion is football – especially Fulham football – and he has appeared on Match of the Day, been MC at Craven Cottage many times, where he has been a director and a life-long supporter, and written an excellent, frequently hilarious book on the ups and downs – A Fulhamish Tale – describing years of watching iconic players like Alan Mullery, Bobby Moore and George Best. David was evacuated to his grandfather’s farm near Billingshurst, where he now lives having bought the property a while ago. And, he will be opening the Southwater Fete on Saturday, two days before his 80th birthday – is retirement an option? “Heavens no! Why should I give up what I love doing?” David can still be heard on Radio Sussex and Surrey and will hopefully find time to pen another book as entertaining as The Golden Days of Radio One.

Horsham Rugby Club looking forward to season on their wonderful new pitch country 22 such pitches will be completed for the new season with in excess of 1,200 teams participating and over 200,000 individuals enjoying the facilities. Richard Ordidge continues: “One third of all bookings have involved women and girls, with the same level of usage from non-senior teams. We are delighted that the RFU chose Horsham as the site for this wonderful new facility, encouraging rugby in Sussex and Surrey. We have a high demand for our grass pitches and the durability of the AGP will allow activity throughout the year in consistent conditions.” RFU Director Steve Grainger added: “We have been delighted how communities have embraced AGPs since the first facility was completed in January 2017. The ability to play all round rugby has been incredibly positive and I’m sure that will be the case at Horsham Rugby Club!” There is a real buzz about Horsham Rugby Club, Head

Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter There was an all day festival of rugby at Horsham Rugby Club last Saturday, accompanied by bouncy castles and a barbecue to celebrate the official opening of the club’s brand new RFU Rugby365 floodlit artificial pitch (AGP).

There were simultaneous games of mini, junior, girls and touch rugby – exhibition games by all sections from the club’s youngest players right through to the senior 1st XV, who culminated their pre-season preparation with a friendly against London Exiles from the equivalent London SW2 League. Horsham Rugby Club Vice Chairman Richard

Ordidge says: “The new facility will provide clubs across the local community the opportunity to benefit from year-round rugby on the durable, all-weather floodlit surface, enabling additional training sessions and more flexible playing times – increasing rugby participation clubs and community groups, further growing the sport.” Across the

The new facility will provide clubs across the local community the opportunity to benefit from year-round rugby... Coach Nick Stocker saying: “Following our pre-season preparations we start with a tough away fixture at relegated Maidstone. The new AGP has had a magnetic effect on the players with high numbers at training, develop-

ing an unprecedented depth to the squad. The new season will be tough with 3 teams relegated from London 1 all trying to get back up, contributing to an ultracompetitive league and there are four other clubs with recent London 1 experience. Also, there are at least eight clubs fancying their chances of promotion, with Horsham having similar aspirations. Our recruitment has gone extremely well, with players returning from university, successful colts stepping up and new joiners, so we have true competition for places. Jamie Redmayne rejoins us – his childhood club – after over 200 first team appearances for Worthing. He comes with three Worthing teammates and Joe Reid from Colchester. And, Declan Nwachukwu is back from university. The options will become a true selection weekly headache for the coaches. The coaching team has been retained and former Club Captain Barry Wright has assumed the role of First Team Manager. And, Richard Tredgett has accepted the responsilbility of Captaining the 1st XV. It promises to be a very exciting season for the club and the sense of optimism is palpable. The club’s philosophy is to develop all players of all standards in a quality coaching environment backed by excellent facilities. The aim is to help players reach their potential and we welcome all players, young and old of all abilities. Our BAA Baas (3rd team) will be looking to retain their Sussex Cup and we shall be staging a few veterans’ fixtures under lights on Friday nights.

The Bears got through to the next round in the Buildbase FA Vase, but they made hard work of it and needed extra time to overcome their South East Counties Division One opponents. In a fairly quiet first half it was the home side who took the lead on 24 minutes when Devon Fender put the centre-half under pressure and the defender put his foot through the ball to clear his lines and by doing so sent their striker goalwards, the shot being hammered past debutant keeper Kieron Thorp much to the delight of the home supporters. Heath replied within 3 minutes when Ben Hands whipped a ball in from the right to an unmarked Fender at the far post who struck it first time on the volley from

8 yards to draw the Bears level. Minutes later Hands received the ball from Tom Bold and hit a longer shot, which the keeper did well to push over the bar. Martyn Flack then powered a header towards goal which was scrambled off the line and in time added on the hosts almost regained the lead with a shot from distance that looped over Thorp and bounced off the top of the crossbar. Broadbridge Heath Manager Steve Painter was forced to make changes at half-time with Flack suffering with an ankle injury, requiring Shaun Findlay to drop back to centre-half and Rob Godfrey to come off the bench into midfield. On chances alone Heath dominated the second period but for once were wasteful in front of goal with the Lewisham keeper the busiest man on the pitch denying Fender on at least three occasions and when the Heath striker did manage to get the ball past him it crashed against the bar and out to safety. Ben Chowney also had a great

chance from close range but put it way over, committing the game to extra-time, during the second session in which the hosts had more of the ball, but rarely troubled Thorp who had a quiet afternoon in goal. The winner was scored within minutes of the second period when Fender exchanged passes with Lee Carney on the edge of the penalty area before playing the ball across the face of goal to Godfrey who bundled it into the back of the net to take the Bears through and in the next round they will play fellow Premier Division side East Preston at the Leisure Centre on the 15th September. Before then, the Bears are next in action on Tuesday with a home league game against Pagham (7.45). Meanwhile, BBH are pleased to announce that the Football Foundation have awarded the club £750 from the ‘Grow The Game scheme’ and the funds will be used towards training facility hire for their new Under 23 team playing in the Southern Combination Football League.

pions – for the fourth time in five years – Roffey finished their league campaign with a win against Horsham, avenging their defeat by the very strong side put out by their near neighbours at Cricketfield Road earlier in the season, the only reverse in Roffey’s 18 match league programme. Batting first after winning the toss, Roffey got off

to a brisk start, getting to 70-2 in 10.4 overs, before in form Jibran Khan (85) – with 12 fours and 3 sixes - and Rohit Jagota put on 99 for the third wicket. Jagota’s blitz ended with an excellent overhead boundary catch by George Garton. But, Roffey were suggesting a 300 plus score, until Horsham’s trio of spinners – Will Beer, Joey Ashmore and Paul Williams - took seven wickets between them. Although Usman Khan weighed in with 41, without another really meaningful contribution, Roffey finished on 292-9. Fortified by Suzanne and Anne’s particularly outstanding celebratory tea, Tom Clark (18) and Craig Gallagher (38) set off brightly, announcing themselves with boundaries in their first overs. Jointly they hit 9 fours and a six, but they were both dismissed by George Fleming, who also subsequently accounted for Garton and at 94-4 much depended on Will Beer, initially obliging him to bat circumspectly. Of the lower order only Ashmore and Mika Ekstrom reached double figures, but Beer pushed on threatening to win the game on his own. 86 runs were required from the last nine overs and although the run rate escalated a little, Horsham pressed on despite the loss of three more wickets, but when Alex Collins trapped Beer for 97, the game was Roffey’s. Beer had batted for over two hours and deserved a century, as recognised by warm applause from the Roffey faithful. Roffey ended the season with 445 points, their fifth consecutive season with a tally in excess of 400. After finishing with two successive defeats after an excellent run from the middle of the season, runners up Eastbourne ended on 393 points, while Horsham after another season of inconsistent availability were fifth with 357.

Premier league round up Cricket - Saturday September 1st Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In the programme of 50 over matches on the last Saturday of the league, at Cuckfield the hosts put Hastings in to bat and bowled them out for 128, only Harry Scowen making any impact with 47 not out as Sussex’s Abidine Sakande took 5-39. Cuckfield then knocked off the runs in 37.4 overs, Ben Candfield top-scoring with 47, Ryan Hoadley and Elliot Hooper sharing the five Cuckfield wickets. At their Saint Hill ground East Grinstead elected to bat, forties from Ollie Graham and Brad Hatchett enabling Grinstead to post 276-8 and win by 39 runs despite 67 from James Hockley. Against Ifield, hosts Middleton won the toss and batted first, centuries from Captain Sean Heather and wicketkeeper Jack Dawling putting on 252 for the first wicket. Middleton’s

316-4 was the highest score of the day and Ifield could only reply with 150, opener Akshay Ramani made 80 but Craig Fowle’s 4-22 plucked the heart out of Ifield’s fragile batting. Preston Nomads won by 2 wickets at their Fulking HQ after dismissing Brighton for 180. Although Isaac Taylor and Bryce Hounsome scored thirties, the visitors were unable to capitalise on a promising 72-1 start. Eastbourne finished the season in second spot, 52 points behind Roffey. Preston Nomads were third. Top individual performances - Batting - James Hockley of Eastbourne: 1021 runs, Mahesh Rawat (Middleton), 1009. Bowling - Simon Hetherton of Brighton & Hove 49 wickets, Lewis Hatchett (East Grinstead) 42. Hastings and Ifield are relegated after both ended the season well behind eighthplaced Middleton, while Three Bridges return to the Premiership - accompanied by Mayfield. Billingshurst won on Saturday but finished fourth in Division Two.

Roffey bow out of National Cup at Semi Final stage Sunday September 2 England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship National Stage – Semi Final Stanmore 225-6 (40 overs) – Roffey 143 all out (33 overs) Stanmore won by 82 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Even the best sides can have a bad day and that fate befell Roffey at Stanmore last Sunday, when, by their own admission, they were well beaten by the hosts. Roffey won the toss and asked Stanmore to bat first and although they never cut loose, a target of 226 was likely to be test against a side that had been crowned champions the day before and promoted back into the strong Middlesex top flight after being relegated in 2017. In front of a large contingent of Roffey supporters at the Semi Final

Stanmore set a good platform with a 78 run opening stand, which Luke Barnard eventually broke, in the 17th over. At the half way drinks break Stanmore had reached a modest 91, but, crucially, they had still only lost one wicket. Theo Rivers came on and had success with his third ball, but Roffey were perhaps a bowler light without Ben Manenti (cup tied) and Leigh Harrison, limiting their normally extensive options, yet Stanmore were restricted to 140-4 with ten overs of their allocation remaining. Acceleration was needed and, while two more wickets fell, Stanmore added another 85, aerial shots avoiding fielders. For Stanmore, openers Steven Reingold made 59 and Talha Azam 41, with thirties from Grant Reingold and Captain Tushaar Karia underlining the consistency of the batting. For several seasons Roffey have carried the flag for Sussex in the National Cup, and, having

made no secret of their desire to win the competition, they gladly accepted the challenge of scoring 226 to appear at finals day, the straight boundaries were short and the outfield at Stanmore’s large, semi-rural ground was fast. Roffey got off to a flying start with positive batting from Usman Khan, when he was out to a welltaken overhead catch they were 33-1 off seven overs. And, Roffey matched Stanmore’s scoring rate (after 19 overs Roffey had 92 on the board, whereas Stanmore had scored 91 at that stage, the difference being that Roffey had lost two more wickets). Roffey needed one of their big guns to bat through with a match winning score, but wickets began to fall too regularly, four bowlers finishing with two wickets each. A more central strip had been proposed, but was deemed unfit and the surface played on had previously been well-used and the ball was beginning to keep

low, accounting for Rohit Jagota when he was bowled. After Paul

We were far from our best today and were outplayed in all three aspects of the game Harrison was subsequently out, boundaries dried up and, with the run rate getting into double figures the urgent need for runs caused fatalities and Roffey’s ill fortune was epitomised by George Fleming’s dismissal with a direct hit from the deep. Stanmore had the rub of the green, but their well-balanced attack bowled tidily, Roffey Captain Matt Davies telling the District

Post: “We were far from our best today and were outplayed in all three aspects of the game.” Coach Simon Fearnley added: “That was a huge disappointment, of course – but it was only our second defeat of the season in any format and we’ve still got two more opportunities of silverware.” Stanmore, founded in 1853, are a big club, producing England’s Angus Fraser and Mark Ramprakash – and other good cricketers and will play Yorkshire side Richmondshire in the final at Bristol on Sunday September 23rd. Meanwhile, this Sunday Roffey defend their Sussex Cup T20 title against East Grinstead at the county’s Hove HQ at 15.30, prior to which Grinstead will play Preston Nomads in the 2nd XI final. The following Sunday (16th) Roffey appear in the National T20 Cup finals day at Derby, where they will play Hanging Heaton from the Bradford League.
