Lidl gets the green light ! martin read
Reporter
It was standing room only at Horsham District Council’s planning meeting on Tuesday night, local residents arriving early to witness HDC’s decision as to whether permission would be granted for the global discount supermarket chain, Lidl, to open their proposed neighbourhood food store in the town. And, those assembled at HDC’s Parkside offices were not disappointed – the plan was voted through unanimously with no abstentions, the decision being greeted with rousing applause. During the consultation process there had been over 8,000 indications of support and less than 100 objections. The plans were displayed on screens around the council chamber and the Chief Planning Officer outlined the background, explaining that the site – the former Dreams bedding store at the junction of Foundry Lane and Kings Road – is predominantly surrounded by commercial buildings and that an HDC study confirmed that there is significant capacity for additional retail facility of the nature proposed. He considered that the impression of the building was of “broadly neutral appearance” and would be well served by public transport, with cycle provision meeting the
West Sussex County Council’s standards. It was felt that, while Tesco might be impacted by the arrival of Lidl, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury and Waitrose would not be significantly affected (Waitrose had been the principal objector on the grounds that “the out of

centre store will have a significant impact on the vitality and viability of Horsham town centre”). James Mitchell, Lidl’s Head of Property then spoke, saying that the plan had been handled professionally by HDC and that the requested improvements
had all been agreed and would be implemented. He added that the new store would bring the site back into use, producing 40 new jobs, emphasising Horsham as a major retail centre. He concluded by saying that he had never seen such a positive reaction to any of

Lidl’s proposals and was warmly applauded after his comments. Ron Bates subsequently outlined the views of the Horsham Society, saying: “The site has been an eyesore for far too long and the provision of new jobs is most welcome. More on page 2

News Martin Read - Reporter West Sussex Council is conducting a major consultation exercise regarding the extensive former Novartis site bordered by Horsham’s Parsonage Road and Wimblehurst Road. Novartis ceased operation in Horsham in June 2014 when over 400 staff were employed at the site and, after the proposal to convert the location into an university campus fell through, WSCC purchased the premises in 2016. From the late 1930s the site was occupied by Swiss company Ciba (Chemische Industrie Basel) – later Ciba-Geigy – and at its height the company was Horsham’s largest employer with 1,400 jobs, Novartis Pharmaceuticals taking over in 1996. WSCC is working on a masterplan for the site, which they have renamed
“Horsham Enterprise Park”. A technical assessment has been carried out and draft masterplan proposals produced with the aim of delivering ‘a high quality place, benefitting the community and attracting new investment’. Meanwhile, WSCC are eager to receive views on their ideas, a presentation of which was recently held at the Holbrook Club, when feedback was invited. A further exhibition has been arranged – please see details below. WSCC’s current proposals are aimed at retaining the large 1930s art deco/ arts and craft Ciba HQ building as a local landmark, turning it into apartments, and developing business space and an innovation hub for start up businesses along with around 300 new homes (35% of which would be classed as “affordable”), including family housing and new apartments. the present proposals proceed additional facilities would be provided, including a café, a crèche and nursery and a convenience store. The scheme would feature retention of the iconic cedar avenue, landscaping, and improved pedestrian, cycle and public transport links into and through the site, connecting it to the wider area’s schools, town centre and railway facilities with improved layouts and ‘people friendly streets’ with restricted vehicular access. The expressed intention is to convert the location into a community hub and employment centre, in accordance with WSCC’s stated commitment to create and support jobs, with an enterprise zone established at the south east of the site near Parsonage Road and homes, generally two to three storeys high, south of Wimblehurst Road. There are feedback forms on the proposed Horsham Enterprise Park, the first phase of the consultation process ending on Friday October 12th. Then there will be the second drop in public exhibition, also at the Holbrook Club – from noon until 8pm on Tuesday October 30th. The company Communications Potential has been employed by WSCC to manage the consultation process, their telephone number and e mail address are: 0207 357 8000 - info@ communicationpotential.co.uk. Horshams’ Lidl continued The new supermarket will give Horsham a wider choice and save residents the need to commute to Lidl stores elsewhere.” Again, the remarks were very well received. HDC Councillors then took the floor, Roy Cornell describing the plan as: “Wonderful!” While Peter Burgess said: “The negative comments are unreal – especially Waitrose’s” – other objections had included statements such as: “There is no need for further supermarkets” and that “North of Horsham is already well served with convenience stores and the site should be developed for affordable homes and not another supermarket.” There were concerns about parking, but it was pointed out that the site was similar to the successful Three Bridges store. Landscaping was also mentioned, which Lidl was happy to address with planters and greenery. The comment that Morrisons and Aldi supermarkets would also be welcomed was also met with approval and planning permission for Lidl was granted within 30 minutes. Existing buildings on the site will be demolished and replaced with new twostorey premises, comprising a bespoke foodstore with a 1,000 square metre sales area parallel with Kings Road. Delighted Horsham resident Hugh Waller summed up attendees’ views, telling the District Post: “I’ve been shopping at Lidl’s at Three Bridges for some years, their prices are unbeatable and their wine is superb! So, approval is absolutely fabulous news – Horsham will benefit from Lidl’s arrival – it’s the best retail news for the town.” German owned Lidl have over 1,000 stores across Europe and ambitious development plans for the UK, where they launched in 1994. They opened their 700th UK store in January and now employ over 10,000 people here and some 315,000 worldwide. They won the Grocer Magazine’s Food & Drink Own Label Award last year.

Horsham AmeriCARna event showcases town and park to record number of visitors
Tens of thousands of people flocked to Horsham’s AmeriCARna event on Sunday (30 September) and enjoyed a celebration of all things American in the Town Centre and the Park. Thanks to Horsham District Council expanding on last year’s first AmerciCARna event , visitors were able to enjoy a spectacle unmatched in recent times with more car and bike displays, more food and drink, an American sports zone, an indoor activities area and much more. Altogether a great fundraiser for the event charity, St Catherine’s Hospice. Cllr Gordon Lindsay, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy said of the event: “Our American themed AmeriCARna event was an amazing celebration of all things American and it was wonderful to see so many people in Horsham town centre and the Park enjoying themselves. “I am sure that many local businesses benefited from the
increase in footfall of the event (double the usual numbers for a Sunday). “Supporting local businesses and community groups is a major for the Council and seeing so many residents and visitors enjoying themselves put real meaning behind our pledge that time spent in Horsham is definitely ‘Time Well Spent’.” Next year’s Horsham AmeriCARna is planned to take place on Sunday 29 September 2019. The Horsham District Council team are asking for feedback via an online survey to gauge visitor experience. If you visited the event, please provide your feedback on the event’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/ horshamameriCARna You could win a breakfast for four at event partner’s Max’s Diner of Langhurst Wood (just north of Horsham town). Horsham Children’s Parade 2019 launch: Crowdfunding campaign
Horsham’s first ever Children’s Parade is planned to take place on Sunday 7 July 2019, as an official part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 and the ever-popular Funday Sunday family event. Organisers are describing the parade as a ‘walking exhibition’ showcasing the creativity of Horsham District’s children through a glorious spectacle of giant models, vibrant costumes, and upbeat music, paraded through Horsham’s town and park. It will enable children from 15+ schools (approx.1000 participants), aged 7-11 to work with professional art-
ists, learn about a diverse range of art and artists, and showcase their own artwork as an official part of a major cultural event – the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019. To make something (as ambitious, exciting and worthwhile as this) happen takes a lot of hard work and, of course, money; Happy Accidents, the parade producers (a not-for-profit community arts organisation) explained: “We raise funds through a number of different channels, including arts/community grants, local councils, and sponsorship. All the money raised is spent on making the magic hap-
pen! “Happy Accidents are running a crowdfunding campaign through Spacehive, a platform used by lots of community projects in West Sussex to raise funds. It is an allor-nothing model, which means if we don’t raise all of the money we, we won’t get any of it. “We are not expecting all of the money to come from the community. A West Sussex County Council Community Initiative Grant and Esmée Fairbairn Community Grant can ONLY be unlocked via the Spacehive / West Sussex Crowd crowdfunding platform. What WSCC and Esmée Fairbairn want to see is that projects they are funding have community support. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to support local children and celebrate their creative achievements.” The campaign began on Monday (1 October) and will run until Friday 25 November. Creating a Poets’ Corner in Horsham Park for Horsham District Year of Culture 2019
A small area in Horsham Park is set to be transformed into “Poets’ Corner”, as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 celebrations. Grant funding from Horsham District Council’s Year of Culture team was awarded to local community group Friends of Horsham Park, to create a circle of tree trunk seats in the park which will be a place to celebrate Horsham District’s poetry heritage and culture.
Competitions were launched yesterday (Thursday 4 October) to coincide with National Poetry Day 2018, for children and adults to get involved, by either writing a poem to be displayed on the tree trunk seats or nominating a poem to feature on a tree trunk seat. Poems need to be on themes related to Horsham Park: nature, park wildlife, having fun in the park, sport, friendship, dog walking or running, Horsham District Council
Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, commented: “The creation of a Poet’s Corner for Horsham Park is a most fitting way to celebrate our local culture. “From the outset, we have wanted to get as many people involved as possible with the Year of Culture celebrations next year, so to have local people, both children and adults, composing and selecting their own poems to commemorate park life in a park (which is so central to Horsham life) is a marvellous idea which I am sure will appeal to many.” Chairman of Friends of Horsham Park, Sally Sanderson, added: “‘We are excited about creating Poets’ Corner for visitors to enjoy. We launched the competitions to coincide with National Poetry Day, and we’ve sent teaching packs to schools to encourage entries. If anyone wants more information, they can pick up a Make your Mark on Horsham Park bookmark from their local library or Waterstones in Horsham.” If you wish to submit a poem, please email it to poetscorner@ friendsofhorhsampark.co.uk The closing date is 1 March 2019. For more details about Poets’ Corner, contact Sally Sanderson at chair@friendsofhorshampark. co.uk

Apply now for primary school places in 2019 West Sussex families can now apply for school places for children due to start primary school in September 2019. Children born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015 will be eligible to start primary or infant school next September. Parents of children currently in Year 2 at infant school should also apply for a place at junior school next year. Applications opened on Monday (1 October 2018) and will close on Tuesday 15 January 2019. The quickest and easiest way to apply is online at https:// www.westsussex.gov.uk/education-children-and-families/ schools-and-colleges/schoolplaces/ Parents will receive an automatic e-mail acknowledgement that the application has been received. Free use of computers with internet access is available in all West Sussex libraries. Those unable to apply online can request a form by phoning 033 301 42903. The form must be returned by the application deadline. How the application process works: • Parents can apply for up to
three different schools and must place them in order of preference. • A child is not automatically guaranteed a place at a school in their catchment area. • Those who miss the deadline for applications must still submit an application form as a child will not automatically be allocated a school. Richard Burrett, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “Applying for a place at school is an exciting and important time for parents and children. I would really encourage families to visit schools before applying and submit an application before the deadline in the new year.” Secondary school applications opened on 10 September 2018 and will close on 31 October 2018. West Sussex County Council staff are available to help parents through the admissions process. Parents can telephone 033 301 42903 or e-mail the Admissions Team North at admissions.north@westsussex. gov.uk or the Admissions Team South at admissions.south@ westsussex.gov.uk.

Careers Surgery at Collyer’s
Dr Paul Siklos, Associate Clinical Dean of Medicine, University of Cambridge, gave an hourlong session to over 40 first and second year Collyer’s students, detailing the often daunting medical school application process. The Ofsted Outstanding college were honoured to welcome back the former Collyer’s student, who gave an inspiring seminar, covering the application and interview process that the college’s aspiring medical students must negotiate to successfully gain a place at medical school. Collyer’s Head of Faculty for Mathematics and Science, Dr Rob Hussey, explained: “Dr Siklos’
extensive experience offered Collyer’s students an incredible insight into the process. The session included how to make an application stand out by crafting an honest and individual personal statement, through to what to expect when called for interview. “As an old Collyerian, Dr Siklos put our students at immediate ease, and a fantastically productive and active session followed.” Dr Siklos challenged students to crystallise their motives for studying medicine, then covered key NHS documents, relating to practicing modern medicine and the interview process adopted by medical schools across the coun-
try. The seminar also explored the necessary characteristics of a successful medical practitioner. Dr Hussey added: “Not only has this seminar helped focus our second-year students on honing competitive applications, it has also inspired our first year students to pursue their ambition and turn dreams into reality. The students found the session to be very informative, and were incredibly thankful to Dr Paul Siklos for taking time out from his busy schedule to offer his advice and guidance.” “We are very proud of our annual success rates in helping students secure places at medical school. It was a stunningly successful session!” Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, added: “Today has been a fantastic opportunity for our students, who were intelligent and engaged throughout the seminar. We are incredibly proud of our faculty for Mathematics and Science. Many thanks to Dr Rob Hussey and the team for helping to orchestrate today’s event, which we all thoroughly enjoyed.” Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley, said: “Huge thanks to Dr Paul Siklos for helping the next generation of Collyer’s medical students. His incredible success in this field has been a massive inspiration to us all at Collyer’s”

Christ’s Hospital pupils receive awards at Oxford University
Two Year 13 pupils from Christ’s Hospital School, near Horsham, received awards for their entries into the John Locke Institute 2018 Essay Competition, at an Oxford University ceremony. The John Locke Institute held the essay competition awards ceremony in the splendid surroundings of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, on the evening of 14 September. Jodie Hart received a commendation and Charles Robinson, from Horsham, a very high commendation for their Philosophy essays. Both students
chose to tackle the following topic: ‘What kind of progression is possible in philosophy? Is it worth it?’ The Institute received around 800 essays from students in over 100 countries, on topics in philosophy, politics, economics and history. Essays were judged by academics from the University of Oxford on the level of knowledge and understanding of the relevant material, the quality of argumentation, the structure, writing style and persuasive force. Charles was also one of a small
number of exceptional candidates who were invited to an interview on their essay with the Director of the Institute, Martin Cox, and to present a talk at the Institute’s prizegiving dinner. Charles explained: “To lecture at Oxford University at seventeen years old, for solely the merit of my own work, is an honour of the greatest kind. “I found the experience of writing the essay, and attending the gala dinner for shortlisted entries, very inspiring” said Jodie of the occasion, “I was grateful for the opportunity to attend an event where I was able to speak to many people with an interest in philosophy and other subjects, including economics, history and politics, which then opened debates and conversations.” The John Locke Institute encourages young people to cultivate the characteristics that turn good students into great writers: independent thought, depth of knowledge, clear reasoning, critical analysis and persuasive style. The Competition invited students from any school and country in the world, to explore a wide range of challenging and interesting questions beyond the confines of the school curriculum. According to the Institute, entering an essay in the competition can build knowledge, and refine skills of argumentation. It also gives students the chance to have their work assessed by experts.
Ashington Children encourage dog owners to clear up after walks
Two pupils from Ashington Church of England Primary School have won a local competition to design a poster encouraging residents to clear up after their dogs. Harry and Max won first and second prize respectively, earning themselves Amazon vouchers. The competition for local schoolchildren was organised by Horsham District Council’s Neighbourhood Warden in Ashington, Bryony Sparks, to
combat the issue of dog fouling in the village. The competition had the full backing of the school staff and Parish Council, and the winning entries were chosen by Parish Council Chairman, Councillor Nigel Spiers, and Councillor Sam Ball. The posters will now be enlarged and placed around the village to encourage the offending dog owners to be more responsible.

Horsham Air Cadets’ trip of a lifetime
Three Air Cadets from Horsham have recently returned after travelling 6000 miles to South America for a once in a lifetime trip to Peru. Cadet Sergeant Daniel Brown (18), Cadet Corporal Reece Packahm (17), and Cadet Harvey Betts (16), were part of a selected group of 24 Air Cadets from all over Sussex. During their three-week expedition they helped to construct a new building at an Orphanage called Azul Wazi – translated as ‘The Blue House’. Their reward for such hard work was a 75km expedition at heights of over 4,500 meters over five days along the Salkantay trail to reach Machu Pichu. The unique part of this trip was that the Cadets ran the entire expedition, with Staff supporting them in the decision making if needed. Daniel, Reece and Harvey had to selected for this expedition, and to earn a place had to go through a grueling selection. Once selected they took part in military leadership training and training from the Edale Mountain Rescue Team in the Peak District. Many of the cadets raised their own funds to make the trip and one even arranged crowd funding for new clothing and musical instruments to be purchased for the 19 orphans who live at Azul Wasi. Reflecting on the trip Cadet Sergeant, Elyot Harmston, said: “Working at the orphanage had a big impact. I have done construction work like that before and it was interesting to see the different building methods. However, seeing what a huge impact our work would make to the orphans and orphanage was really eye opening for me.” One of the Staff on the trip was one of their previous Officers from their Squadron. Flying Officer, Richard Foster, said: “To have enabled a group of keen and enthusiastic young people was a privilege. To see how they overcame various obstacles and challenges, and to help them to overcome them was really

rewarding and it was a privilege to be a part of their journey. “I was lucky to have taken part in a similar trip at their age, and it changed and shaped my life for the better – I hope it does the same for them.” Could you be the like Dan, Reece or Harvey and take a trip like this? Overseas expeditions are one of the many things that Air Cadets get to take part in,
including the Duke of Edinburgh’s award, visiting RAF Stations, and Adventure Training. It’s never too late to join, Horsham Air Cadets is recruiting. If you’re interested in joining, and are aged 12-17, you can contact them by visiting 1015@aircadets. org for details of the next open evening. Applications for adult volunteers, are also welcome, via the same address.
Horsham District Older Peoples Forum to host annual ‘MP Question Time’ next month
‘What question will you ask a local Member of Parliament? Are you wondering just what is going on in Parliament at the moment? Brexit? Funding for Care? Local Transport? The Horsham District Older Peoples Forum is pleased to announce that it will be hosting (courtesy of and supported by Horsham District Council) their highly popular, well attended and successful ‘MP Question Time’ free to attend event again in November (the previous date of 2nd March 18 had to be rescheduled due to the snow). The Horsham District Older Peoples Forum originally started this event in 2016 with Jeremy Quin MP and, as it proved to be so informative, candid, interesting and enjoyable, it is being repeated annually. The HDOPF ‘MP Question Time’ free to attend meeting gives older people aged 60+ living in the Horsham District or those that care for someone who is, or those that are involved with or care about the is-
sues faced by older people, including local councillors, the genuine opportunity of meeting a local MP, putting forward questions, raising issues and listening to the MP’s views. ‘Getting it from the horses mouth’ and ‘face to face’ rather than from the news. This free to attend event will be 10.30am - 1pm on Friday 16th November 2018 at the Council Offices, ground floor, Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham with Jeremy Quin, MP for Horsham. 10.15am for tea/coffee. If you would like to attend, the Forum would just ask that you book your place (for catering and as space may have to be limited) via email to: hdopforum@gmail.com If you have a question that you would like to ask Jeremy Quin MP (even if you can’t attend the meeting), email that to the Forum well before the event please, so that a fair range of questions can be put forward, plus, if research is needed, Mr Quin will have the answer on the day.

Rudridge announces‘Charity of Bed firm is finalist the Year’ in memory of colleague
in business award
Rudridge Horsham has announced it will be supporting the Stroke Association as its chosen ‘Charity of the Year’ throughout 2018 and 2019. The groundwork and materials supplier, which is based on Handcross Road, chose the charity in honour of former employee, Tony Marshall, who sadly passed away in 2016. He had worked at Rudridge for 14 years as a Senior Sales Executive. The Stroke Association works to prevent stroke, and support everyone affected by it, by funding
research, and campaigning for the rights of stroke survivors. Tara Galloway, Head of Stroke Support for the Stroke Association said: “There are around 1.2 million people in the UK who are living with the devastating impact of stroke. A stroke can happen to anyone at any time, and it turns lives upside down in an instant. We’re incredibly grateful to Rudridge for choosing us as their Charity of the Year. The money raised will go a long way towards helping more stroke survivors and their families to rebuild their
lives.” Paul Duke, Sales Director at Rudridge, who had worked with Tony closely, said: “I know I speak for the whole team when I say how missed Tony is. We hope that, by supporting the Stroke Association, we can continue to honour his memory and raise vital funds to help other people affected by it.” The team at Rudridge will undertake a number of charity fundraising activities to raise funds, which will be announced in the coming months.

Pitchy Breath celebrates 200 years of Frankenstein with bold modern reinvention ‘Monsters’
It’s been 200 years since Mary Shelley’s gothic horror Frankenstein was published to an unsuspecting public. Since then, the book has been adapted for stage and screen numerous times, most notably with the classic 1930s Boris Karloff movies, the image of a creature with bolts through his neck seared into the public conscience. In the classic novel’s anniversary year, Pitchy Breath Theatre Company are adding a 21st century twist to the tale in their new touring production ‘Monsters: A Modern Frankenstein Story’. On the night of his wedding, ground-breaking surgeon Victor Frankenstein’s life is changed forever when his past comes back to haunt him. As he battles to justify the decisions made as a young man, he is thrust into the spotlight as his latest medical marvel wreaks a trail of catastrophe and destruction. In a time where identity and acceptance clashes with egotism
and corrupt power, Shelley’s classic novel provides ripe material for modernisation. Pitchy Breath will transport audiences to an alternative time in which Frankenstein discovered and performed the world’s first organ transplant, before going on to discover the elusive spark of life. Bradley Barlow, writer/director of ‘Monsters’ and Artistic Director of Pitchy Breath Theatre Company, said: “Frankenstein is one of those books that sticks in the memory long after you’ve turned the last page. It’s been a long-held ambition of mine to take Shelley’s original ideas and bring them into the modern era. The themes she wrote about 200 years ago are still relevant today, and I’m so excited for audiences to get up close and personal to see what we’ve been working on. The cast are fantastic and ‘Monsters’ promises to be one of our most dynamic, energetic and exciting productions to date.” A cast of actors from the local
community have been rehearsing alongside professional theatre practitioners, under the direction of writer Bradley Barlow, to give this classic story a modern reimagining whilst faithfully retaining Mary Shelley’s original themes. Funded and supported by Crawley Borough Council, Pitchy Breath Theatre Company was formed in 1995, and Monsters will be their 52nd production, following last year’s hugely successful productions of ‘Julius Caesar’ and ‘The Last Time We Saw You’. ‘Monsters: A Modern Frankenstein Story’ tours to venues in Sussex and Surrey this November. Performance information: Tuesday 13 November 2018, 7.30pm, at The Hawth Studio Theatre, Crawley RH10 6YZ Sunday 18 November 2018, 7.30pm, at The Capitol Studio Theatre, Horsham RH12 1RG Tickets available from: www. hawth.co.uk, and www.thecapitolhorsham.com.
The Whitney Houston Show coming to The Hawth
Featuring the breathtaking vocals of Belinda Davids, this is a beautifully crafted tribute to one of the world’s most revered singers. The two-hour, critically-acclaimed live concert will fill you with joy, nostalgia and wonderment as you are taken on a heartfelt musical journey through Whitney’s greatest hits, including I Will Always Love You, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, How Will I Know, One Moment in Time, I Have Nothing, Run to You, Didn’t We Almost Have It All, Greatest Love of All, I’m Every Woman, Exhale (Shoop Shoop) and
more. For those lucky enough to witness it, this is truly a show you will talk about for years to come. For accomplished South African songstress Belinda Davids, starring in this show is the culmination of a life-long connection with the superstar to whom she pays homage. Davids beat almost 15,000 other hopefuls to take on the role, and it was her own eternal love of Whitney that prepared her for the show. Exposed mainly to R&B and gospel as a child, Davids was innately drawn to Houston’s musical style.
Singing professionally from her early teens, Houston songs became a fixture in Davids’ live shows. “I think I’ve sung at least one Whitney track in almost every live show I’ve ever performed,” says Davids. Though she eventually carved out a successful career as a chart-topping solo artist and a session vocalist for such artists as The Temptations, Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole, Monica and Johnny Gill, in her earlier days, Davids encountered resistance from many industry professionals who were unsure how to work with her because she looked and sounded so like Houston. The ultimate realization of Davids’ affinity with Whitney occurred during a show in Hong Kong. Following a recital of I Will Always Love You, the audience was so astounded by her performance that they demanded she sing acapella, to prove she wasn’t lip-syncing. Now representing her idol on stage, Davids feels destined: “I’ve essentially prepared my whole life for this show and I feel privileged to be able to honour Whitney in such a way.” Performance: Thursday 1 November 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £35, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth.co.uk.

For the Fallen and the Lost At the Centenary of the end of First World War, Christ’s Hospital Choral Society are proud to present their annual Autumn concert with music by Butterworth, Purcell, and Elgar. ‘A Shropshire Lad’,’ Music for the funeral of Queen Mary’, and ‘The Spirit of England’, will prove to be moving and moody, hopelessly sad and incredibly beautiful, inspirational and uplifting. George Butterworth composed ‘A Shropshire Lad’ to the poem by AE Housman just before the outbreak of the First World War, to which he signed up in 1914. By 1916 he was recommended for the Military Cross three times, which was awarded twice - the second on the day he was mortally shot at the Somme. His so-promising life cut short at just 31 years old. While it appears his academic achievement at school was not great, Butterworth excelled in music from a young age. When at Oxford he was fascinated by folk music rather than his university work. Funeral for Queen Mary’ presents a melancholy theme, a beautiful and powerful melody.
Edward Elgar (1857 – 1934), probably best known for the rousing ‘Pomp and Circumstance’, is among the best known and most loved British composers. He came from humble origins; his father had a music shop and tuned pianos. Elgar composed ‘The Spirit of England’ between 1915 – 1917, set to words by Lawrence Binyon’s poems from ‘The Winnowing Fan’. It comprises three movements; ‘The fourth of August’, ‘For Women’, and ‘For the Fallen’. The music is described as expansive and aspirational with upward leaps and rising sequences - it moves along like a march with an austere deliberation. Elgar dedicated his contribution to the work to ‘the memory of our glorious men []’. Intrigued? Do come and listen; 3 November, 7.30 PM, St. Mary’s Church, Horsham. Tickets from Choir members or CH Box Office, 01403 247434, or at the door. The Choral society are delighted to support Chestnut Tree House, the hospice for children with lifelimiting conditions; at the concert refreshments will be available, supporting the centre.

Stonewater celebrates construction start on affordable homes in Horsham part of this commitment, we are keen to continue the longstanding work with partners to deliver appropriate schemes, and we were delighted to work with Stonewater and CALA Homes on this particular scheme in an area where house prices are high. “We know we must continue to work with developers and housing groups to ensure a sensible number of new affordable homes are built for local people of all ages.” Stonewater owns and manages 889 homes across West Sussex.
Leading social housing provider Stonewater has celebrated the start of construction on 14 new affordable homes on land next to The Holbrook Club in North Heath Lane, Horsham. The new homes, being built in partnership with Horsham District Council, will be part of housebuilder CALA Homes’ new 58home development. Stonewater’s affordable scheme will be a mix of four one-bedroom apartments and four two-bedroom houses for affordable rent and six two- and three-bedroom houses for shared ownership. Stonewater’s energy-efficient homes will be built to a high specification and equipped with energy-saving facilities including low-energy lights, water-saving eco baths and rainwater-collecting water butts. Set to be built on surplus playing fields, owned by the Holbrook Club, the development will trigger a new 25-year lease for Horsham’s premier sports and social Club, making it eligible for funding from various sporting bodies, and
securing its long-term future. The scheme will also have a new access road and a pedestrian entrance off Jackdaw Lane. Chris Montague, Assistant Director of Development at Stonewater, said: “We are really excited to see work starting on these desperately-needed new affordable homes in Horsham, which will help to meet a chronic shortage of truly affordable housing in the town. “We’re also delighted that this innovative new housing scheme will help secure the long-term future of The Holbrook Club, which has been part of the town’s landscape for over 40 years.” Stonewater’s new homes have good transport connections to Horsham town centre, just over a mile away, and are within a short walk of Littlehaven train station. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, Cllr Claire Vickers, explained: “Ensuring that there are affordable homes for our residents available in our district is important to us as a council. As
Nicki Dennis, sales and marketing director at CALA Homes (South Home Counties), commented: “The start of construction marks a major milestone for this new development, and the delivery of much needed new homes in Horsham. “In addition to the affordable properties, CALA will be bringing 44 attractive private homes to the area, in a mix of two to four bedroom styles, whilst contributing £618,000 towards improvements for the local community, as part of the S106 Agreement.”

Neil Boniface’s fifth Barns Green Half Marathon win!
Photos by Clive Turner
Barns Green Half Marathon Sunday September 30 Martin Read - Sports Reporter This year’s Barns Green Half Marathon and 10K race were bigger and better than ever, the traditional lovely weather attracting large fields of runners and a huge crowd of spectators to the muchsavoured community event, once again demonstrating why Barns Green is known as ‘The Village with a Heart’. As ever, the village green was alive with music, food stalls, fair ground activities and fund raising stalls and after warm ups provided by bluecoatsports the half Marathon was started by Christ’s Hospital Headmaster Simon Reid with the longest siren blast in living memory, the cavalry charge of runners being warned about the speed hump 20 metres from the start line! Horsham Joggers’ Neil Boniface – appropriately wearing
number one – was in the front row of the grid and led by some distance at the half way stage before romping home in I hour 10 minutes and 21 seconds, just 6 seconds outside his winning time of last year. Looking remarkably fresh and still full of running, Neil told the District Post: “I got a lot of encouragement on the way round and I’ll be back again next year if my knees hold up!” James Baker, another serial Barns Green Marathon winner, was second in 1.12.30. The first lady home was Rachel Hillman from Eastbourne in 1.25.58, saying: “This was my first run at Barns Green – it’s a very up and down course, but I intend to return to defend my title next year!” In addition to the highly competitive runners the race is a challenge for those just seeking to keep fit, mature local runner Jason Summerfield telling us: “I first ran here when I was young, coming back to it more recently - my aim is to get round in under two hours
and I was pleased to record my best time today!” Among the fancy dress runners, Emma Catlow – no stranger to Barns Green runs - was Wonder Woman – accompanied by her friend Bat Woman, otherwise known as Beck Elder, Emma saying: “It’s my birthday today, so I wanted to celebrate in style - and my husband, Mike, ran in the 10K race!” When going through the school grounds the runners were greatly uplifted by the 120 strong Christ’s Hospital Marching Band, Simon Reid, who cycled over, emphasing: “I am delighted that CH is able to support this unique local event, which has made a huge contribution to the local community over the last 36 years, bringing the School and village together, forming an important part of our work in the area.” Poignantly, the 10K race was started by Pauline Munster and Lorraine Awcock, whose husbands, sadly died on the same day, Race
Director Vernon Jennings saying: “Brian and Mike were two of my best friends and they were race marshalls for 56 years between them, so I’m delighted that Pauline & Lorraine have kindly agreed to start the race in their memory.” Pauline said: “It is great that the races are raising funds for locally based St Catherine’s Hospice again – I cannot speak highly enough of them, not just for Brian, but for the whole family,” Lorraine adding: “St Catherine’s Community Team were brilliant, so amazing when Mike was treated at home.” Thanks to the generosity of the runners and supporters, last year the races raised £18,000 for St Catherine’s and the organisers are hoping to donate even more this year. London 2012 Olympian Scott Overall won the 10K race in 31.07, with Maisie Trafford leading home the ladies in 38.03 – both course records. All of the runners in both races – some 2,000 entrants, from
near and far – received medals with handsome cash and trophy prizes going to the various categories of winners, the incredible turn out being backed by the whole village and a veritable army of volunteers, making it an exceptional family day out, Vernon Jennings commenting: “Because of Dark Star Brewery sponsorship, we will be able to allocate even more funds to St Catherine’s – and to the various local and junior organisations, societies and clubs that help us organise the event on the day,” while committee member Nigel Currie summed up with: “Work on the event goes on all year and it is important that we start attracting entries for next year’s races now, so please make a diary note – the 2019 races will be on Sunday 29th September and you can apply now! Please go to www.barnsgreenhalfmarathon. org.uk”

Horsham start season with a five goal win
Photo by Clive Turner Saturday September 29 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 5 3 Tulse Hill & Dulwich Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last season scoring, especially converting short corners, hanging onto a lead and successfully closing down a game when in front did not come easily for Horsham, but, back in Division 2, they laid such demons, starting with an encouraging highscoring win last Saturday. Fielding a much changed side, with new signings boosted by returners from university, Horsham opened the scoring in the fifth
minute when their short corner remained in the D, enabling Sean Pearcy to unleash a back hander. Almost immediately they might have gone two up, but Joey Humphreys was thwarted at the last moment. Two close range Tulse Hill saves followed, but they came more into the game, equalising after 12 minutes. Horsham then had a goal disallowed before the visitors took advantage of a failed clearance to take the lead. Horsham, though, kept pressing earning another short corner and then a free hit, which was pushed forward and out to the right, from where Zac Chinn hit the ball high into the net to level the score. With play alternating ends, both sides creating chances,
Tim Upchurch cleared a Tulse Hill short off the line, before, while Horsham keeper Ollie Matthias was prostrate, the ball trickled into the goal only to be overruled because of a foul, the score remaining 2-2 at the break. The second half began with an immediate Tulse Hill attack, a short corner somehow scrambled away after hitting the post. Another breakaway TH&D foray came to nought, as did Joey Humphreys’ shot across the goal, but Horsham retook the lead with a trademark strong strike from Zac Chinn. Frustratingly, TH&D restored parity within three minutes, when a save was put in off a rebound at the second attempt. 20 minutes remained, but it did not take Horsham long to go in front again, Pearcy converting a short corner. TH&D promptly responded with an attack, but a short corner and free hit were repelled, until Pearcy crashed in another short, his hat trick goal giving Horsham a two goal cushion with time fast evapourating. With Horsham picking up well another short – unfulfilled - resulted, but they were happy to run out 5-3 winners, Coach Dom Male – perhaps remembering Horsham’s 5-0 win in the first game of last season, after which things deteriorated markedly – told the District Post: “That was a great start and now we need to get into that winning habit.” Sean Pearcy added: “We made it a bit more interesting than we should have done and I’d like to see us getting more field goals, but we won, so let’s be happy with that for now!” This Saturday Horsham travel to Upton Park, to take on Slough, who lost 3-1 to London Academicals last week.
Horsham have tough induction in National league
Photo by Nick Evans Saturday September 29 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Sevenoaks Ladies 5 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter At the end of their hard fought last season Horsham Ladies were delighted to gain promotion back into the Conference East League,
and on Saturday started their programme with a stiff examination at Sevenoaks. After going a goal down Horsham equalised through Bex Ross, Ladies Club Captain Charlotte (CJ) White telling the District Post: “After that Sevenoaks went up a notch, scoring three more goals by half time. We were disappointed, of course, but there is a clear upper and lower level in this
league and they were the outright winners last year, so, realistically, this was not a game that we expected to win. But, there were encouraging signs - we held them much better after the break.” Former Horsham Hockey Club Chairman and Men’s Ist XI goalkeeper Nick Evans added: “It was a good test for the girls and it was certainly not all negative. Sevenoaks are an established team in this league and are used to playing at the higher speed and intensity. They were clinical in front of goal and will probably be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. The second half was much better for us and was only 1-0 to Sevenoaks. The girls will learn from the experience and I think will do OK, now that they’ve had a taster of what things will be like. For many, it was their first match at this level.” This Saturday, Horsham Ladies play their opening home match of the season – at Broadbridge Heath v Bedford with a 3pm push back - CJ White saying: “This should be a much closer game for us.” Last week Bedford lost 0-3 at home to Norfolk’s Harleston Magpies.

Horsham bounce back with bonus point win Saturday September 29 – London 2 South East Thanet Wanderers 33 47 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Kicking down the slope in pleasant early autumn sun Horsham got off to a solid start, building up a substantial lead, which they defended stoutly to run out substantial winners after back to back defeats. Former captain Tom Johnson began an afternoon of outstanding kicking with a three minute penalty, promptly doubling the dose before a smooth build up culminated with a Chris Double try, maximised by Johnson to give Horsham a 13 nil lead. And, it soon got even better with Jordan Bell crossing the line and when Johnson did the same, converting both, the Green and Whites led by 7-27 at the break, a late defensive lapse having enabled Thanet to open their scoring with a converted try. The second half began with another Horsham attack, rewarded by Double’s second try, again Johnson adding the extras before slotting home a further penalty. But, persis-
tent Thanet responded, piercing Horsham’s defence with two converted tries, bringing the score to 21-37, following which a Horsham penalty and a host’s try kept the scoreboard moving, until Chris Double’s treble put the result beyond doubt with Johnson’s conversion. There was still time for Thanet to notch up a try of their own, kicking the additional two points, but Horsham were clear 33-47 bonus point winners, albeit perhaps closer than it might have been, Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “Young 18 year old half backs Aaron Lindfield and Joe Blake were live wires throughout and Jack Osgood and Jordan Smith were also impressive, allowing Tom Johnson and Jordan Bell to create space for Joe Wilde and particularly Chris Double. Amid a raft of good performances, the fast developing and irrepressible Jack Osgood was Man of the Match.” On Saturday Horsham, now sixth, return home to welcome fifth-placed Charlton Park – also with two wins from four starts – last week Charlton drew 20-20 with current runners up Beckenham. At this early stage of the season Dover are top.
Pulborough snatch victory with last gasp try Saturday September 29 – London 3 South East Beccehamians 24 29 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter On Pulborough’s first visit to the Sparrow’s Den on West Wickham’s Corkscrew Hill, they opened the scoring in warm sunshine before a close, competitive game developed with Boro clinching a last minute victory. After denying early Beccs forays new Captain Frazer Oliphant-Hope kicked a penalty before the hosts responded with a drop goal to level the score. A Beccs try followed, they failed with the conversion and a subsequent penalty, but then converted one ahead of injuries leading to two of their flankers being substituted, Boro responding with a try, maximised by the Captain, leaving them shaded by a single point – 11-10 – at the break. Resuming, Boro were soon in trouble, shipping in a converted try and penalty, but, to their great credit, they then took control of the game,
scoring a wide, unconverted try, before snatching the narrowest of leads – 21-22 – with a try under the posts, the skipper’s boot again obliging. However, the Kentish hosts were not contemplating defeat and retook the lead with a late penalty, before, in
It was great to win, but we are making it too difficult for ourselves! the final minute, OliphantHope crashed over and then converted for Boro to grab victory, 24-29, telling the District Post: “It was great to win, but we are making it too difficult for ourselves! We’re third now, having lost just one game and are back at home on Saturday, against Vigo.” The visitors – from Meopham near Gravesend – are eighth after losing heavily to current leaders Crowborough at the weekend.

FA Trophy win follows Horsham league defeat Photos by John Lines
Tuesday September 25 – The Bostik League – South East Division Hastings 2 0 Horsham Saturday September 29 - Buildbase FA Trophy – Bury Town 1 2 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter
In the league at Hastings, Horsham, with three changes from the side that beat Heybridge Swifts in the FA Cup, started brightly with Rob O’Toole just unable to reach Chris Smith’s cross, but although the hosts initially looked unthreatening, they took the lead in the 18th minute when Adams converted the rebound from Ajakaiye’s shot, O’Toole
almost equalising moments later. Horsham then had to be at their best to repell further Hastings attacks, the score remaining 1-0 at the break. Resuming, the lively Ajakaiye soon tested Josh Pelling in the Horsham goal, subsequently doubling the hosts’ lead with a clean strike into the top corner. Smith responded for the Hornets, when a goal might
have meant a different outcome, but it was not to be, and after both sides had opportunities, the game ended with Hastings in the ascendancy, leaving them in the runners up spot behind Cray Wanderers and Horsham occupying the 16th berth in the table. The Hornets return to league action on Wednesday October 17th, with a visit to Thamesmead Town.
Heath undone by rampant Newhaven
Photo by Clive Turner Saturday September 29 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 3 Newhaven Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The score somewhat flattered depleted Heath – their muchchanged line up suffering from non availability, rampant Newhaven completely bossing the first half. Newhaven started as
they meant to proceed, immediately breaking through, inducing a save from Kieron Thorp, before heading over. Although Heath responded with Tim Cook’s long range attempt, Newhaven soon went ahead with a Lee Robinson goal, followed by a corner and two more threatening attacks – all in the first 15 minutes. Devon Fender, though, set off on a long run but was dispossessed at the last moment. Thorp then had to rush out to deny Newhaven before Heath’s Marlon
Maxwell and Charlie Pitcher were both yellow carded for robust tackles. After a visitors’ free kick crashed into the wall, Ian Robinson headed onto the bar and four consecutive Newhaven corners were somehow averted. Heath launched a rare attack, but to no avail, action immediately switching to the other end, where Lee Robinson hit the bar. Heath had a golden opportunity to equalise but Pitcher was unable to convert and then had to leave the field because of an ongoing heel injury. Just before the break a Newhaven back header was too high, then corners at either end went unfulfilled, the interval coming with Heath relieved to be adrift by the single goal when, on another day, Newhaven might have scored five. The second half began with Newhaven heading over and kicking just wide. Heath replied, but Dean Wright found the side netting before Fender blazed over. Newhaven then went further ahead with an impressive first time strike, before Fender reduced the deficit a minute later. Heath were coming more into the game, creating chances, earning two late corners, but Newhaven were also producing opportunities and Lee Robinson put the result beyond doubt with a well taken goal, his subsequent cross almost adding Newhaven’s fourth. On Saturday, hoping for better, Heath, now 7th, travel to 13th in the table Eastbourne Town

Last Saturday, Horsham had another long trip – to Suffolk’s Bury Town in the FA Trophy, where victory earned them £2,000, on the eleventh anniversary of the Hornets despatching Bury from the FA Cup in the year that Swansea City were Horsham’s opponents in the second round proper. At Bury St Edmunds, both sides had scoring opportunities, but neither could break the stalemate, Horsham hitting the woodwork twice in the closing stages of the goal-less first half. Horsham, though, took the lead just after the resumption when Rob O’Toole rounded off Richardson-Brown’s supply, and O’Toole almost scored again, only to be denied by the stanchion. After Josh Pelling had to be on top of his game to deny Bury, Richardson-Brown doubled Horsham’s lead with time fast evaporating. Yet, there was just long enough for Bury to claw back an almost posthumous goal, but it was Horsham’s day and they are rewarded with a home tie against Ware Town in the next round on Saturday October 13th.
