Councillors discuss setting up own company to build more affordable homes

Horsham District Council has helped deliver more affordable homes to local people in the past three years than any other council in Sussex, with over 600 built through existing council policies. At a special seminar for councillors on Monday (15 October), plans were presented to increase this number by the creation of a District Council owned affordable housing company. Councillors heard how this affordable housing investment company could give a boost to the existing delivery of affordable housing in the district, make the best use of commuted sums, and provide a financial return to the Council for further reinvestment in housing and in district facilities. Following a model seen in other councils, such a company is separate from the Council, but owned by it. It is led by Council appointed directors, but other staff resources – such as legal, financial and administrative support – come from within the Council. Housing companies are part of what has been called

a “quiet revolution” in council house building, with a prediction that this could see homes built for ownership by local authority housing companies, delivering up to 15,000 additional homes a year by 2022. Following the presentation and further discussion with members, a full business case will be brought to the Council’s Cabinet members for a final decision in January. Councillor Tricia Youtan, Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, said: “I was encouraged by the considerable enthusiasm among members for creating an affordable housing company, so we can then start building affordable permanent rented homes owned directly by the Council. “In the Horsham District, our existing policies have already given us the highest level of affordable house building in the County. We shall continue with that approach, but going forward with a Council owned company enables us to add to that number and help even more local people who are on our housing register into affordable homes”.

Billingshurst-based iconic sugar-free pure lemon juice brand PLj have launched a campaign, in partnership with ‘Know Your Lemons’ and Tenovus Cancer Care, to create awareness about the 12 signs of breast cancer through a striking image of lemons in an egg box, with each representing a different possible symptom. The illustration is being carried in a free awareness booklet on the necks of over 100,000 bottles of PLj lemon juice, currently in supermarkets and health food shops, throughout Sussex and also up and down the country. It is also being featured on Plj funded posters, which organisers hope to spread throughout GP surgeries throughout Sussex, and UK-wide. The posters carry the Tenovus Cancer Care Helpline number, for those with any concerns. An initial print run is currently being distributed to surgeries by NHS Brighton & Hove Clinical Commissing Group (CCG), Guildford & Waverly CCG, and North East Hampshire & Farnham CCG, and is going into 500 surgeries in Wales, as well as Tenovus charity shops. Plj are calling on people

that have contacts in surgeries, or other clinical commissioning group,s to contact them https://www.healthyfoodbrands. co.uk/spread-the-word - to help spread awareness further. First launched in the 1950’s, primarily as a sugar-free drink that could aid a calorie-controlled diet, the PLj brand has recently been re-packaged, but the contents have stayed the same. PLj know their lemons from a health perspective: as well as making a refreshing drink and as an ingredient in baking, and cooking, each serving of these natural sugar-free cordials provides 75% of the RI of Vitamin C. Both the lemon and lime juice also contain many other health-giving qualities, from improved skin to maintaining a healthy digestive system. Cliff Moss, MD for Billingshurst based Healthy Food Brands, the manufacturers and distributors of PLj, said: “We’re honoured that PLj, an iconic, healthy, heritage lemon juice brand, is partnering with two such amazing charities, in creating awareness of the signs of Breast Cancer, a campaign which literally saves lives.”

Slinfold C of E Primary School children are creating a huge poppy display to commemorate the 100th Anniversary for the end of WW1.Every pupil is making a poppy to honour the special occasion, with each year group creating their poppies by using a different craft medium. The young pre-school children have painted beautiful window stickers to produce a stained glass effect and pipe cleaner and tissue poppies are being made in the reception class. Older pupils are designing and crafting their stunning poppies using a range of collage, printing, pointillism and ceramic techniques.

With the pupils being captivated by the history and fun in the project, pupils from year 5 Adur class said “People risked their lives for us and I am enjoying making this to raise money for those who survived WW1 and need help to care for themselves. I am also very excited to be celebrating their victory”. Another pupil commented “I am enjoying doing this because we can help people in need to have more fun and we can remember the war. Our teachers showed us how to make our clay poppies and we have tried really hard to copy the examples they gave us.” Once completed, all of the poppies will be included in a large

display in the school’s reception area, with some of the ceramic poppies being moved to decorate the village’s war memorial over the weekend of the 10th and 11th. Mrs Collins, Adur’s Class Teacher said “They have really engaged and enjoyed using their artistic skills to create their poppies and are excited about selling them in the village community to raise money to help war veterans.” The Royal British Legion will also be visiting the school to present each child with a certificate for their stunning poppies and taking part in the village’s celebrations.

Horsham’s New Curry Centre crowned best Restaurant & Takeaway in South East at Asian Restaurant & Takeaway Awards

The inaugural Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards (ARTA), the most prestigious celebration of South Asian cuisine in the UK, paid homage to the UK’s finest curry houses at the InterContinental London – The O2 on the evening of 30 September 2018. ARTA 2018 welcomed a guest list of the nation’s most respected curry restaurateurs alongside MPs, dignitaries and celebrities as they collectively honoured the achievements of the industry. In attendance were Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir John Vincent Cable, television personality Lizzie Cundy, reality star Ben Jardine, Britain’s Next Top Model contestant Victoria Clay, cricketer Monty Panesar, TOWIE star Pascal Craymer among others. The ceremony was hosted by television chef Ainsley Harriott and BBC news presenter Samantha Simmonds. Interspersing the awards presentation was a curated world-class entertainment, including a performance by the evergreen Queen of Bollywood music, Alka Yagnik. The award Charity Partner, Chance to Shine, was represented on the night by ambassador and former England cricketer, Devon

Malcom. Amongst the winners at the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards 2018, sat Horsham’s ‘The New Curry Centre’, crowned Best Restaurant & Takeaway in South East. The Prime Minister, Theresa May commented: “These prestigious awards are an excellent opportunity to celebrate the craft of the most talented chefs and highly skilled service staff responsible for producing exceptional British Asian Cuisine. Asian cuisine has certainly become an immensely important and popular part of British life. Its success is owed, in no small part, to the talented restaurateurs and chefs who are being nominated for and receiving awards this year, and it is crucial that we recognise, promote and celebrate this.” ARTA founder, Mohammed Munim, explained: “I began this journey to combine my passion for cuisine, culture, and community. I saw the incredible talent spread across the UK within the Asian restaurant and takeaway industry. “It’s important to remember what has been done, but also to respect the next generation. From the very beginning, I wanted this to be a moment that was about pro-

moting the immense importance and popularity of the South Asian catering industry. And I wanted it to be a way to connect to the whole community.” The Asian catering industry is valued at approximately £5 billion. Even so, over the years the industry has witnessed a steep downturn. This decline is largely attributed to the shortage of skilled workers in the hospitality sector, from a lack of talented chefs all the way through to front of house staff. This is due to the UK’s stringent immigration policy relating to skilled workers from outside the EU, coupled with a palpable sense of disinterest among younger people or job seekers with regard to the hospitality sector. The ARTA initiative has involved addressing this insufficiency. Through reaching out to current and prospective students at the regional cook-offs, ARTA has established a program of youth engagement that will help revitalise the food industry by targeting a demographic that is crucial to the future prosperity of the sector. As ARTA has been working with colleges nationwide, it has introduced the industry and prospective workers to one another, inspiring a symbiotic relationship. Speaking at Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Vince Cable, said: “The purpose of this evening is to celebrate the achievements of a very important industry. “This is a four billion pound industry, which employs over a hundred thousand people, and makes a massive contribution to the British economy and to British society. But it’s also about saving the industry, not just celebrating it. I know that in recent years we’ve been losing two restaurants a week - the pressures on the high street, the pressures on the industry are very great, and you’re going to need maximum political support in order to pull through a crisis in the industry.”

Christ’s Hospital pupils enjoy action-packed day

Pupils at Christ’s Hospital school near Horsham took part in a day of diverse activities earlier this month. On Thursday 4 October, partici-

pants enjoyed an action-packed schedule, including everything from a treasure hunt and a woodland adventure, to bread-making and First Aid workshops.

Year 7 children enjoyed a treasure hunt which led them on a complicated trail of challenges all around Christ’s Hospital grounds. The children were split into teams and given a brain-teaser puzzle to solve, in order to receive their treasure maps. They then had to complete a series of tasks, including axe-throwing, bridge-building, archery, and a human catapult, to find the treasure, which in this instance was “The elixir of Youth.” They then had Fun Food workshops involving making cookies and naming their creations. Other age groups had drama sessions, anti-smoking workshops, bushcraft and army training, to name but a few, as well as trips outside the school to visit Hever Castle, to walk from Amberley to Arundel and to visit the Escape Rooms. The bread-making workshop was run by Philippa Laughton, Head of Food at CH. She said: “It was really hard to make a bread basket out of dough, but the pupils did really well, and the results smell and look delicious!”

Modern Slavery – where are the risks and how can I report it? News Charlotte schroeter

It’s estimated that there are approximately 29.8 million people held in slavery in the world and 13,000 of those are in the UK. The 18th of October marks AntiSlavery Day – a day which raises awareness of modern slavery and human trafficking and encourages government, local authorities, companies, charities, and individuals to do what they can to address the problem. Modern Slavery is serious organised crime and is principally divided into slavery, forced labour and domestic servitude on the one hand, and the “trafficking” of victims from one place to another with their subsequent exploitation as the driving factor on the other. Criminal networks will seek to exploit their victims in almost any industry or sub-contracted service. The industry could be illicit – like sex work, or apparently normal such as contract cleaning or the care sector. It also involves many of the areas we are already aware of such as nail bars, catering, hospitality, agriculture, and many others. Crimestoppers in Sussex has launched a campaign to help people ‘Spot The Signs’ of slavery, in a bid to tackle this growing issue and has worked with the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority to identify common signs of slavery that victims of

abuse share. Signs to spot include a person who: Shows signs of injury, abuse and malnourishment Looks unkempt, often in the same clothing and have poor hygiene Be under the control and influence of others Lives in cramped, dirty, overcrowded accommodation Has no access to or control of their passport or identity documents Appears scared, avoids eye contact, seems untrusting Is collected very early and/or returned late at night on a regular basis May have inappropriate clothing for the work they are performing, and/or a lack of safety equipment May be isolated from the local community and their family People are encouraged to ring 999 or 101 to report information, or they can contact Crimestoppers, a nationwide independent charity, anonymously by calling 0800 555 111 or completing a form on their website crimestoppersuk.org/give-information. Crimestoppers gives people the power to speak up and stop crime anonymously 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The charity has been running since 1988, and in those 30 years, no one has ever been identified when they have contacted Crimestoppers, either by phone or by completing a form

Billingshurst Blooms Over the summer, The Weald Community Captains and the school gardening club met to discuss ways to bright up Billingshurst Village. It was decided that the train station should be a priority, as students felt this was a key transport hub. As a way to brighten up the village train station the Weald School students built wooden planters to enhance the environment and make it more welcoming. Mr Fry said: “this is a wonderful opportunity for our students to brighten up the community.” The planters represent the five school houses of Wilberforce,

Elgar, Austen, Livingstone, and Darwin. Mr Dixon said: “the students have worked hard, they have been keen and positive and want to help out their community.” Ryan, a Year 8 student who is one of Darwin house’s Community Captains, said: “The Weald is a big family and we feel that we should give back a little to our villag,e as many students pass through the station every day.” Organisers gave thanks: “We could not have made these planters without local business support and we would like to thank Scandia Hus Manufacturing Ltd (Billingshurst) and Network Rail Billingshurst for allowing us to run this project.”

Horsham & Shipley Community Project put HDC grant to good use

In 2015, a grant of £8,750 from “Section 106” development fund was awarded by Horsham District Council towards improving the drainage facilities at TD Shipley Football Club’s site in Shipley, just south of Horsham. A brand new junior football pitch has been built at one end of the site, which was previously rough and overgrown, and general watermanagement solutions have been implemented to take excess water away from the main pitch, which is well-used by TD Shipley FC’s 1st Team, Reserves and new Under 18 squad, together with Hills Farm Lane Veteran’s FC. The Council grant along with other funding, has been administered through a new charity, the Horsham & Shipley Community Project. This has made it possible to bring the site alive

with much more activity reaching many more people through the week. On Friday (October 12) the new CEO of Horsham District Council, Glen Chipp, came to see the new activities. He was met by Mark Curtis, Chairman of TD Shipley, as well as Philip Gibbs and the other Trustees of the Horsham & Shipley Community Project. “We are so proud of what we have achieved here”, said Philip Gibbs, who pioneered the HSCP, “The money we received from the Council has allowed us to improve the quality of the pitches, and thereby promote football for all ages and abilities in the community, and we have also been able to add some additional facilities which are mainly of interest to older people who have more time on their

hands, but want to remain active to some degree”. A Men’s Shed on the site is there for local people to assist with general maintenance of the grounds, come and practise woodworking skills or just spend time in each other’s company, while the new Shipley Pétanque club meets a few times each week at the four pétanque pistes which were constructed on some waste land in the corner of the site. Following the football theme, there is now a thriving Walking Football arm of the organisation which meets weekly to play on the purpose built grass pitch. Mr Chipp and his colleagues watched the walking footballers battling it out while the pétanque players enjoyed their game in the sunshine. He was shown around the Men’s Shed and could see the drainage work around the main pitch being finalised ready for whatever the winter of 2018/19 throws at us. “It is great to see all this activity going on here. When I visit projects like this it is clear that it comes down to a few key individuals who have the vision, patience and determination to develop something good for the community. When we can, I am absolutely keen for the Council to support these types of initiatives because the benefits to the community are obvious”. For more information about the activities of the site, please visit www.HorshamShipleyCommunityProject.com

of his success story was honest, humorous and massively inspirational. We have another bright employability group this year and they all thoroughly enjoyed the session. Two retired military dogs have become the face of Pets at Home’s new Remembrance poppy range, developed exclusively with The Royal British Legion. Billie, 8, a Labrador, and Buster, 7, a German Shepherd, who both recently retired from serving in the military, returned to the Defence Animal Training Regiment in Melton Mowbray to take part in an exclusive photoshoot. The two hero dogs were given the chance to proudly model a new range of poppy-themed pet accessories, created to support the Armed Forces charity, in the Centenary year of the end of the First World War. Billie, who retired three days before Christmas last year, served as a vehicle search dog and Buster trained as an RAF Police dog. This week, however, they turned their paws to modelling the three new pet accessories, of which 100% of the profits* go to The Royal British Legion. The range features a Poppy Collar

Charm that fits seamlessly on to any dog or cat collar or horse harness, a Poppy Bandana, featuring a poppy print that also fits on to any collar and a Poppy Bowtie, perfect for an official engagement. Billie and Buster’s owner, Claire Martin, 33, who served in the Veterinary Corp until 2010 before becoming a Senior Instructional Officer, was on hand to see her two dogs strut their stuff in the photoshoot. She said: “I’m so proud of both Billie and Buster, they definitely weren’t camera shy and they looked honoured to be wearing their Remembrance poppy accessories. “Remembrance Day is chance for us to remember those who lost their lives securing our freedom and it’s fantastic that pet owners can now get involved whilst also raising money for such a worthy cause.” Peter Pritchard, Group CEO, said: “We are delighted to be working with The Royal British Legion and Poppyscotland to help the UK’s pets support such fantastic charities. “Heroes Billie and Buster both looked sensational in their poppy attire and we are so proud to have them model our range. The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community - serving men and women, veterans, and their families. Their diverse range of services covers employment, finance, independent living, respite, recovery and care. They either offer services directly, or work with partners to direct support wherever and whenever it’s needed.

Collyer’s have welcomed back PVL CEO Nick Broom to the college for a Q&A session with students, focussing on employability. PVL, based in Burgess Hill, have been saving lives on the roads since 1999, as the world’s leading company creating high visibility markings for emergency service, highways and security vehicles. Lucy Hargreaves, Employability Programme Co-ordinator, said: “Over the past year Nick has been incredibly supportive of our Employability Programme at Collyer’s and is genuinely passionate about helping the next generation. It was really kind of him to give up so much of his valuable time to prepare for, and take part in, the Q&A session with our keen students.” The innovative Employability Programme at Collyer’s has been uniquely designed by the college to help students into the world of

work with the help of taught sessions, workshops, trips and a host of inspiring special guests. During a fast-paced and entertaining session, Nick answered questions about his career path, and covered areas including: management, working abroad, turning creative ideas into action, how to make yourself employable and the importance of people skills. Nick modestly said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the session and hope that the students got something useful from it too! I was impressed with the Employability group, who asked great questions and were all really engaged. I think this course is an excellent idea, and it is great to see it has gone from strength to strength.” Deputy Principal Steve Martell, who teaches the highly regarded Employability course at Collyer’s, presented the Q&A session. He was delighted: “Nick’s account

I thoroughly enjoyed the session and hope that the students got something useful from it too! of the busy and insightful session was to help students, who are currently studying the Employability Programme in their second year at the college, gain an understanding of the world of work and how to plan their futures.” Lucy Hargreaves added: “Employability is hugely important to us all at Collyer’s and today’s Q&A session is one of the college’s numerous progression initiatives that will run throughout this year. These include: mock interviews, employability skills workshops, Not Going to Uni (NG2U) evenings, HE evenings, networking lunches and mock assessment days. 2018/19 is going to be busier than ever!”

Sussex EDS and Hypermobility group in bid for Sussex Community Heroes Awards

Community Charlotte schroeter In June this year, Sussex residents Jane Green, Karen Scott and three other committee members formed a voluntary community group Sussex Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (SEDS) to support those in the local area who have Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder. Although Jane coordinates the EDS UK SUPPORT group she and Karen knew there was a lack of practical support for sufferers and awareness locally.

EDS comes in 13 types, but three main ones and is a group of inherited conditions that affects connective tissue which provides support in skin, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, internal organs and bones. Those with the disease can experience symptoms ranging from nerve pain and fatigue, to regular joint dislocations and organ prolapse and seizures. In more serious cases, there can be curvature of the spine or fragile blood vessels that can result in serious internal bleeding. Those with hypermobility experience many of the same symptoms including loose, unstable joints, joint pain and fatigue. It affects children at school age as well as adults. There is no cure for either type and people often go years without a diagnosis as the symptoms can be similar to other many

other conditions and disorders. Those who suffer with severe symptoms have to adapt their lifestyle, giving up work, favourite activities, family outings. They have to take pain medication, engaging in physiotherapy if available, pace themselves, adapting everyday activities and attending counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy as the symptoms often mean people suffer with anxiety and depression as a result. SEDS Secretary, Karen Scott, said: “The group came into being over a period of a few months and whilst there is a national charity, EDS UK Support, there is no practical support nor a group that raises money locally in order to improve the quality of life for sufferers’. SEDS aims are to raise awareness in the area outside of forums and to offer activities, reduce isolation, improve wellbeing, raise awareness training for education staff, provide ‘visible and invisble’ EDS training for transport organisations from trains, airports to ferries etc. Provide specialist talks and advocacy to reduce isolation and empower sufferers and their families. A Facebook group has been set up to enable communication between Sussex residents and share advice and support and in the future, are hoping for funding to

build a website. Lauren from Billingshurst is a member of the group and said: “The group has provided an invaluable platform for support, and a space to share ideas and experiences, medical or otherwise. I would implore anybody diagnosed with this condition to not suffer alone, the single best thing I did to improve my mental wellbeing was to link up with others in a similar situation for emotional and practical support. I have been signposted a number of times with excellent advice and have even shared my own personal advice/experiences with the group. It’s great to be part of an excellent support network, no matter how the condition affects you, or even if you don’t have it yourself and are a carer/family member, it’s a lifeline.” Similarly, Claire from Southwater said: “Having a chronic condition like EDS plus all its related conditions is very isolating and can be incredibly frustrating. When it’s taken years to get diagnosed, and the majority of medical professionals say ‘huh?’ when you tell them your diagnosis, it can be difficult to stay positive. That’s where support groups like this really help. We can support each other, signpost to knowledgeable medical professionals who can help us, share advice

regarding mobility aids, dietary needs, help for children in school, share experiences of various treatments/surgery etc. Above all being part of SEDS means I don’t feel alone, I know there are regular friendly supportive meet ups locally if I’m well enough attend, but if I can’t join the meetup there’s always online support 24hrs a day. “The group works hard to share information and spread the word about EDS into the community as well as amongst medical professionals to make it easier in the future for patients to see the correct specialists and receive good helpful advice that ultimately will help keep people like me stable.” Waitrose in East Grinstead has been collecting green tokens for the group throughout September and Healthwatch West Sussex has also supported SEDS and the group is also hoping to be nominated for the BBC Sussex Community Heroes Awards which recognise unsung heroes in the region. You can find the group on Facebook by searching for Sussex Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (SEDS) or here https://www.facebook. com/groups/1116702001696031/. You can also email admin@infosussexeds.org.uk

Trick or Treat returns to Horsham Town As part of Horsham’s Autumn Half Term festivities, Horsham Rotary Club, supported by Horsham District Council, are once again bringing back the old custom of Trick or Treating to the Town Centre over the Half Term Holiday, from Saturday October 20 until Sunday October 28th. Accompanied pre-teenage Children are invited to visit participating shops, where they will draw Halloween Cards to discover whether they have won a treat or will have to perform a ‘trick’. Naturally, the tricks are not too nasty or onerous. The event has been designed to ‘keep the children occupied for a few hours and, as well as being a lot of fun, will probably reward

them with quite a few ‘sweet’ treats’. To stand a chance of winning some great cash prizes, participant must also obtain passwords from the shops, which they must enter onto a form. Entry to the Competition is totally free. A spokesperson for The Horsham Rotary Club gave thanks to Brock Taylor, Toy Barnhaus, Horsham Museum and The Crown for supporting this year’s trail. dish, playdough, string mummies, plus many more make and take home activities. Visiting children are encouraged to wear fancy dress for their visit and each will receive a free sweet treat from a lucky dip. At the Centenary of the end of First World War, Christ’s Hospital Choral Society invite you to their annual Autumn concert. Moving and moody, hopelessly sad but so beautiful, inspirational and uplifting music will come to St. Mary’s Church in the Causeway. Pieces by Holst, Guest, and Parry will join works by Elgar, Purcell, and Butterworth to commemorate the fallen in the choir’s November concert. A bit of background information on the composers might whet your appetite! George Butterworth set AE Housman’s ‘A Shropshire Lad’ to music just before he signed up in 1914. Two years later, aged 31, he had been recommended for the Military Cross three times – and was awarded his second MC on the day he was mortally shot at the Somme.

Aged nine, Henry Purcell was already writing music. He composed the music for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695 to the words of the Book of Common Prayer. ‘Thou knowest, Lord’ was performed at Purcell’s own funeral in November of the same year. Edward Elgar (1857 – 1934), probably best known for the rousing ‘Pomp and Circumstance’, came from humble origins; his father had a music shop and tuned pianos. The young Edward grew up teaching himself a wide range of instruments, and was a largely self-taught composer, too. His success is evidence of his determination to achieve; he was a Roman Catholic in a predominant Protestant country, and on top of that in late Victorian England social class meant everything. Elgar composed ‘The Spirit of

England’ between 1915 – 1917, set to words by Lawrence Binyon’s poems from ‘The Winnowing Fan’. Binyon had a wide interest in the arts and enjoyed an excellent reputation as a poet – in 1913, his name was amongst those to be the next Poet Laureate. At 45 he was too old to join the war, but his poems written around that time have made a more profound and lasting impact than any fighting could have done. He wrote ‘For the Fallen’ when visiting Polzeath. The beauty of the Cornish coastline and the endless sea must have been the starkest of contrasts to the atrocities happening on the Continent. And finally, ‘Jerusalem’. In 1916, at a time when Britain really needed a boost, Hubert Parry wrote what is arguably his best-known and most-loved work: ‘Jerusalem’. We are lucky he did; it appears that under pressure from both his parents and his future in-laws he had (temporarily) abandoned music in favour of a more conventional career. Interested? Do come and join the choir! 3 November, 7.30 PM, St. Mary’s Church, Horsham. Tickets from Choir members or CH Box Office, 01403 247434 (AM only), or at the door. The Choral society are delighted to support Chestnut Tree House, the hospice for children with lifelimiting conditions. Refreshments available at the concert will support the centre.

With the centenary of the 1914-18 world war Armistice looming the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s first concert of the season featuring the Brighton Festival Chorus was apt. Hugh Parry’s often moving 1914 piece From Life to Death was well received among an audience

of about 1,000 and it seemed the orchestra and choir enjoyed combining on this music. As war clouds had gathered in 1914, Brighton had been one of few towns in the country to hold its music festival and commissioned Parry’s piece to be premiered at that’s year’s concert, also held at the Dome.

More than 100 years later both the musicians and the choir showed great delicacy in the lighter passages as moods shifted from the sombre, punctuated by doomy brass, to a celebratory sense of redemption. The choir, celebrating its 50th year, showed a gaiety of spirit and easy charm in the highly engaging Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands by Elgar, with nimble cello and jaunty bassoon featuring in the on-form orchestra. Shostakovich’s Festive Overture was bold as brass, full of energy and was zipped along by conductor Barry Wordsworth, while the choir showed great attack and confidence as well as poise in the crowd-pleasing Zadok The Priest by Handel. The concert featured lesser known Elgar pieces, the orchestra and singers showing suitable gravitas on Great Is The Lord, sprightliness on the Cockaigne Overture and a gentle beauty on O Hearken Thou. The next concert is on November 11 and features works by Rossini, Beethoven, and Dvorak. Phil Dennett

just when it looked as though Horsham had snatched all three points. Horsham made the early running, Sam Gill scoring in a goal mouth melee within seconds of the push back, before they went two up five minutes later, Chas Richardson crashing in a short corner. Wycombe, though, promptly reduced the deficit by running down on the right and virtually walking the ball home.

Short corners then came into play – three for Horsham and two for Wycombe – with Horsham keeper Tom Surridge diving full length and then pulling off a close save to keep the now more active Wycombe at bay. Horsham were also pressing and might have reinstated their two goal cushion when a Wycombe clearance was favourably deflected off the umpire, but the woodwork came to the visitors’ rescue, the score remaining 2-1 at the break. After three more Wycombe short corners, mid way through the second half Horsham conceded a penalty, which was slotted into the bottom left corner, giving Surridge no chance. In another four minutes Wycombe burst through on the left to take the lead with a close range goal. A clash of players resulted in a raised Wycombe stick, but after a lengthy discussion nobody left the pitch. A proliferation of yellow cards followed, Horsham waking up, with Richardson taking route one to level the score at 3-3. Play switched to the other end where Surridge and Peter Neave kept Wycombe at bay, until, as if by prescription, in the 35th minute, Sean Pearcey converted a short corner to put Horsham back in front and hoping to close down the game. But, Wycombe threw everything into attack with a kicking back replacing their keeper – and it worked, a very late goal leaving both sides four apiece and slightly relieved to share the points. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “We had a small squad here today but we started and finished very well and at least we came away with a point. But, we should have won that!” On Saturday Horsham travel to seventh placed Staines, who notched up their first win of the season last weekend, beating bottom club Slough 3-1. Guildford are currently top, shading Trojans and third in the table Horsham on goal difference - all three sides having seven points.

Battling Horsham obliged to settle for a draw Saturday October 13 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham 1 1 St Albans Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter This feisty game finished a goal apiece after Horsham Club Captain CJ White had given Horsham the lead with a first half penalty flick, the score remaining 1-0 at the break. After the resumption Horsham continued to create chances, earning a barrage of short corners, but were unable to add to their total, and, when the increasingly fractious visitors equalised a draw was signalled. Having had a second half goal disallowed

after the decision was reversed on appeal from the opposition, Horsham were disappointed with the result, but St Albans celebrated the draw, Horsham goalkeeper, Captain Hannah Jackson telling the District Post: “We stuck to our plan and produced more opportunities than they did – it was frustrating that we couldn’t convert what we set up, but we just couldn’t score!” On Sunday Horsham Ladies travel to the Paddington Recreation Ground in London’s Maida Vale to take on thirdplaced Hampstead & Westminster. Cambridge City currently top this Women’s Conference East League with Sevenoaks in the runners up spot. St Albans are sixth, just above Horsham

Plenty to celebrate at Roffey’s end of season awards Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Roffey’s well attended dinner dance awards ceremony the presentations reflected the club’s exceptional season – the first XI won the Premier League for the fourth time in five years, got through to the National Club T20 and Sussex Cup Finals days and, after carrying the flag for Sussex in recent seasons, also reached the semi final of the ECB National Club Championship. Games on both days of the weekend became the norm – including trips to Kent, Essex, Middlesex, Derbyshire and Cornwall, all relished by their enthusiastic travelling supporters. The 3rd

XI was promoted and there were some excellent performances from some outstanding younger players. For the firsts, consistent Jibran Khan won the batting award, his 846 league runs from 15 innings including two centuries and seven fifties – only bested in the Premier League by two former pros. Rohit Jagota was bowling supremo with 29 wickets in addition to his 728 runs, confirming his status as the league’s top all rounder and Alex Collins received Captain Matt Davies’ award, Matt saying: “Collo has developed from a fringe player to an integral member of the side, bowling at all the important moments.” Davies was made Club Person of the Year after shepherding the

team through an incredibly busy and demanding season from behind the stumps, accompanied

Matt worked tirelessly before and throughout our long season, playing in every game with total commitment by telling innings and much off field planning (a role he described as “a privilege”), Coach Simon Fearnley saying: “Matt worked

tirelessly before and throughout our long season, playing in every game with total commitment.” Chris Webb carried off the 2nd XI batting prize with 719 runs, the highest aggregate in the 2nd’s league, with Matt Bidlake the most successful bowler. The 3rd XI were promoted, Jim Barnes getting the bowling accolade and Pat Gibbs both the batting prize and the Darren Webb Award. For the juniors, Lewis Shivnarin won a bowling and batting award, plus a special citation for his two Festival centuries as Captain, against Burgess Hill & East Grinstead. Sam Henderson, U13 batting award winner, also received a special award for his 151 against Middleton – four seasons

ago Sam took five wickets in five balls, so, like Colt of the Year Lewis, he is clearly a developing player to watch – along with the other colts’ prize winners - Louie Dunford (Colt Team Player of the Year and 5 wickets against Hurstpierpoint in the National Regional Final), Ben Embling (hat trick against West Chiltington), Regina Suddahazi (Player of the U13’s Festival) and Jacob Spiers, Joe Berry, and Hayden Webb with age group awards. The evening was rounded off with Matt Howell and Mark Murphy receiving 4th XI batting and bowling trophies, while Max Rivers, Max Furber and Ben Moss were all given commendations by their respective Captains.

Horsham’s Richard Marshall wins the Sussex Groundsman Award Richard Marshall

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Cricket Club’s Richard Marshall is delighted to have won the Sussex Cricket League’s Groundsman of the Year Award – the coveted accolade decided upon by scores from umpires’ reports. No stranger to assisting on the ground, Richard stepped into the breach when the new groundsman appointed for last season withdrew at the last moment. Cricket seasons at Horsham are always demanding for the groundsman because of the sheer weight of fixtures at the club’s two grounds where simultaneous games are a common sight. Apart from the Premier League programme there are Sussex 2nd XI games, ladies’ cricket, feeder league men’s sides, Thursday fixtures, local finals, schools tournaments and a variety of colts and representative matches, and there are also grass tennis courts to look after. Richard told the District Post: “I’m really pleased, it was a good team effort and I thoroughly enjoyed

it, but it was pretty full on seven days a week! We’ve advertised for a new groundsman and have had some encouraging interest. Meanwhile, it is great that we’ve been able to maintain high standards at the club.” Horsham has won the award on previous occasions and the last time Sussex played at the club, the umpires were fulsome in their praise of the wicket, and, congratulating Richard on his award, Horsham Captain Michael Thornely says: “We are extremely lucky to play on our first class surface and its easy to take it for granted, but Marsh truly deserves the recognition for all his dedicated preparatory work – the feedback from Sussex’s T20 practice day this season was exceptional. Well done Marsh and many thanks for all your hard work!” Richard followed his father’s footsteps into the club, first playing in a junior side as a nine year old, before going on to captain the Premier League team from 1973 to 1977, being the first Horsham captain to lead the side to the championship title, in 1976 and

1977, the club carrying off the trophy on six subsequent occasions. Richard scored his first century in adult cricket for Horsham seconds versus Worthing when he ran out his father, telling the District Post: “I didn’t dare go back in the dressing room so I though I’d better stay out there! But I was told that he was more nervous than me as I neared the hundred. We lived in Kerves Lane then and when Dad was ill, Horsham President Dr John Dew attended him and after a cricket bag was spotted under the bed it triggered a long conversation about the game, making Dad feel a lot better, and he joined Horsham CC and pioneered colts coaching with the doctor in the late fifties.” The Horsham colts set up has produced a conveyor belt of good young cricketers, several going on to represent the county, including Chris Nash, Robin Martin-Jenkins, Will Beer and Tom Haines. Although Richard is also standing down from as Ground Manager he is continuing as Cricket Chairman and looking forward to being able to spend more time in that demanding role. Horsham President Barry Peay played with Richard throughout Horsham’s glory years, saying: “Richard was a good number three batsman and excellent fielder. He bowled off breaks, too, opening the bowling in cup games, and was an inventive captain for the first XI. During my 57 years at Horsham Cricket Club Marsh has been outstanding as a player, captain, groundsman and chairman – a true club man.” Richard’s son Luke was Horsham Captain from 2004-2007, another highly successful period at the club – the team winning the championship in 2004, the Sussex cup in the same year and again in 2006, as they have done a further 11 times, and, famously, carrying off the Cockspur National Knockout title at Lord’s in 2005. Luke went on to captain an MCC tour to Papua New Guinea.

YMCA exit the FA Vase with disappointing display Saturday October 15 – Buildbase FA Vase First Round Proper Horsham YMCA 0 2 Kensington Borough Football Martin Read - Sports Reporterr A visitors’ goal in each half unceremoniously dumped anticlimactic YM out of the FA Vase last Saturday. Relatively new club Kensington Borough are in the equivalent Combined Counties League and although they have led a nomadic existence with five far flung ground shares in quick succession, they looked at home at Gorings Mead, opening the scoring with a well-taken goal after a defensive lapse. YM had two corners, from one of which Dave Brown could not quite connect, and Alex Barbary required Sean McDermott in the Kensington

goal to save with his feet, but although Tony Nwachukwu probed as ever, YM did not look too threatening and trailed 0-1 at the break. YM were more positive on the resumption, Barbary diving to no avail and McDermott being forced into a one handed save from a corner before Dean Bown’s two close range shots were thwarted and Callum Donaghey’s strike was put over the bar by the keeper. Nwachukwu broke through on the right, but YM were not getting the rub of the green and just did not seem likely to have the finishing to score. Then, against the run of play, Kensington’s Ashley Fionare burst through for his second goal – into the bottom left of the net. A cluster of YM corners followed, totalling seven in the half, and nine in the match, but chances came and went with narrow misses, in the middle of

which Donaghey was sent off during a heated exchange. Post match YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “Their keeper had a cracking game, but we were very disappointing, probably our worst performance since I’ve been at the club. Kensington are near the bottom of their league and we are near the top of ours, so we must have been favourites to win at home. The only positive spin I can put on it is that we won’t be losing Saturdays to the FA competition now and can concentrate our efforts on the league. I expect us to bounce back from that in the Peter Bentley Cup at Arundel.” YM then welcome sixth-placed Eastbourne Town to Gorings Mead in the league this Saturday. Chichester City currently head the table with 25 points, one more than YM, who have a game in hand.

Single goal denies Heath Saturday October 13 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 0 1 Lancing Football Andy Crisp & Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath – the Bears – welcomed Lancing to the Leisure Centre last Saturday for the final match to be played using the old building as the club’s HQ. The building has now closed with demolition imminent and the new Centre opening this Saturday. On the two sides’ previous, recent encounter rampant Broadbridge Heath beat Lancing 4-0 at Culver Road and, prior to last Saturday’s game, 15th- placed Lancing had been labouring, losing 4-0 to Hendon and then 7-0 to Pagham in cup games. But, the Bears came into Saturday’s game on a run of fours straight defeats and in the first half both defences controlled the game, resulting in very little goalmouth action apart from Devon Fender crossing to Dean Wright, who powered a header inches wide of the post. A Lancing header also went wide and the score remained goal-less at the break. The second half continued at the same tempo, Heath having plenty of play, but rarely troubling Lancing keeper Tyler D’Cruz, who was protected by

a solid defence sitting back and relying on the counter attack. Heath’s best chance came when Tom Bold played a free kick to George Cousins, who struck the ball well only to see it comfortably gathered by D’Cruz. At the other end Jack Langford’s attempt to chip Kieron Thorp come to nothing, the keeper stretching to catch the ball. With 15 minutes remaining a Tom Bold corner from the left was intercepted and played out wide to Lancing’s Man of the Match, Langford, on the right for the forward to run three quarters of the length of the pitch with Wright in hot pursuit. Langford cut inside and shot under the advancing Thorp to win the game for Lancing. This was a frustrating result for the Bears, who were unable to get their flowing football going, and, to compound their exasperation, just before the final whistle, Martyn Flack was sent off following his second bookable offence. On Saturday Heath visit Peacehaven and Telscombe, the team immediately above them in the league – they will be without Flack and the suspended Scott Weller and Charlie Pitcher. Meanwhile, defeat against Lancing leaves Heath ninth in the table with Chichester City, Horsham YMCA, Pagham and Newhaven occupying the top four spots and Loxwood and Eastbourne United bringing up the rear.

Saltdean hoodo eliminates Heath from two cups Tuesday October 2 – Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Broadbridge Heath 1 2 Saltdean United Tuesday October 9 – Royal Ulster Rifles Charity Cup Saltdean United 3 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Andy Crisp & Martin Read - Sports Reporter Don’t mention the dreaded S word anywhere near a Broadbridge Heath player, official or supporter – Saltdean have put a curse on Heath, having now beaten them in all three encounters to date this season – once in the league and twice in different cup competitions. And, in three out of the four games prior to the most recent matches Heath have taken a 2-0 lead and ended up on the losing side. In the Sussex Senior Cup tie at the Leisure Centre Heath held the visitors in the goal-less first half and honours were even – until Saltdean cruelly snatched victory in the 93rd minute. Heath began brightly with both Max Howell and George Cousins having chances before Saltdean also created opportunities. Then, Tim Cook and Dean Wright were just unable to find the net. But, soon after the resumption, Will Berry headed Saltdean in front. Heath responded but Cousins

was narrowly off target, ahead of Heath being reduced to ten men when sub Scott Weller was red-carded after only five minutes on the field. Heath, though dominated play and Howell equalised with his fourth goal in eight appearances. With extra time beckoning Saltdean clinched the tie when Ben Bacon scored with help from the crossbar, Charlie Pitcher’s immediate reply flying over. At Hill Park in the RUR Cup, Heath were a goal down within two minutes when Marcus Allen in open space converted a corner. After George Cousins might have achieved parity, Tim Cook did level the scores, getting Tom Bold’s supply past Nathan Stroomberg in the Saltdean goal. However, Heath were immediately back in arrears, unmarked Ashley Jones heading home. The game continued in end to end vein, but with Saltdean looking more likely to score, Toby House being a constant threat until Luc Doherty blasted an uncleared corner into the net to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage at the break. In the second half Heath played better, having more of the play and Cook’s shot was thwarted by the upright, but the damage had been done in the first half by very lax defending. Heath are now left to devote their energy to their league campaign.

Horsham bow out of the FA Cup in Dorset Photo by Poole Town’s Andy Orman

Tuesday October 9 – FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round Replay Poole Town 2 1 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After holding Poole Town to a 1-1 draw in the original fixture at Lancing, Horsham embarked on the 200 mile round trip to Dorset in confident vein, buoyed by loyal travelling supporters. And, when the Hornets took

an early lead, Poole had plenty to think about, until their second goal, just after half time, was enough to eliminate Horsham. The hosts created the first opportunity, only for Gillespie to be off target, then, in the 13th minute Harvey Sparks, late of Bognor Regis Town, took advantage of lax defending, latching onto Rob O’Toole’s pass and calmly slotting it home to put Horsham in front. And, Horsham might have promptly doubled their advantage, but Sparks

Horsham bounced back in style from their midweek FA Cup disappointment at Poole with a commanding win against Hertfordshire’s Ware of the Bostik South Central League, having also eliminated the visitors from the FA Trophy four years ago. At Lancing the game got off to a quiet start, until Harvey Sparks and then Will Hoare had unfulfilled chances. Then Tyrell Richardson- Brown tested Anthony Page in the Ware goal, but to no avail, but, with a goal surely in the offing, Horsham were soon celebrating after Hoare crashed home Sparks’ supply. And, Horsham were disappointed not to immediately double their lead, but Richardson-Brown’s centre was just too heavy to allow Rob O’Toole to capitalise. Then, neither Hoare nor Jack Brivio could latch onto O’Toole’s cross. These scares activated Ware, but they were off target before Josh Pelling celebrated

his 100th game – joining Joe Shelley in Horsham’s century club - with a fine, trademark save. Horsham then benefited from a seemingly generous penalty decision, Charlie Harris gleefully putting them 2-0 up, with the prospect of a third goal just ahead of the break, but Richardson-Brown’s strike was pushed behind with a goal kick given instead of a corner. Coming back out two goals adrift, Ware made substitutions in an attempt to boost their fire power, but their radar was off beam, both in open play and from a headed corner. After O’Toole found the keeper from close quarters, a Harris curler put the result beyond doubt. Ware did get a consolation goal shortly afterwards, but that was their sole moment of glory and they were reduced to ten men when Jack Daveney’s second yellow card prevented his further participation. Horsham cruised home amid additional late chances and are rewarded with a home (Lancing) draw in the First Qualifying Round against old sparring partners Corinthian Casuals on the weekend of October 27th/28th.

could only head over. Poole were, though, threatening and brought out the best from Horsham, Joe Shelley, keeper Josh Pelling and Steve Metcalfe all having to extend themselves to preserve Horsham’s lead. Despite constant pressure from Poole, Horsham were creating chances but O’Toole was unable to get the ball past Luke Cairney in the home goal and a rebound off the bar just eluded Sparks. Yet, with half time beckoning, Horsham conceded a free kick with calamitous result when Poole Captain Jamie Whisken headed the equaliser just ahead of the whistle. And, worse followed soon after the restart, when, after Gillespie had fired wide, the ball remained in the area, reaching Corby Moore who unleashed a pile-driver that Pelling could not prevent from entering the net. Horsham responded, but Poole came closest to scoring again and were only thwarted by Pelling’s last ditch save. Poole then blazed over before Charlie Harris’ attempt to replicate his memorable cup goal from a free kick against Carshalton Athletic was narrowly averted by Cairney at full stretch. Seven minutes of added time raised Horsham’s hopes, but, despite their spirited efforts, it was not to be, the Southern Premier Division hosts securing a Fourth Qualifying Round visit to Haringey Borough.
