Horsham’s Novartis Site – still time to have your say! martin read
Reporter
In September West Sussex County Council opened their major consultation exercise regarding the proposed redevelopment of the extensive former Novartis site with an exhibition at the Holbrook Club, which was attended by more than 150 people. And, on Tuesday, there was a further display at the venue, this time featuring public feedback on the proposals, accompanied by responses from WSCC. While the feedback was broadly favourable, concerns were expressed and the masterplan for the site – named “Horsham Enterprise Park” - has been revised. The consultation process closes on November 16th – details on how to participate are shown below, meanwhile, display banners outlining current ideas for the site will be on display at Horsham Library from November 5th to 16th when feedback forms will be available. Major local employer Novartis ceased operations in June 2014 and it was originally hoped to convert the location into a university campus, but when that fell through, WSCC purchased the
site for £16million after receiving a £3.66million contribution from the Coast to Capital Local Growth Fund. A technical assessment has been carried out and the draft masterplan aims at delivering ‘a high quality place, benefitting the community and attracting new investment’. WSCC’s proposals retain the large 1930s art deco/ arts and craft former HQ of the pharmaceutical company as a local landmark, turning it into apartments, and developing business space and an innovation hub for start up businesses over approximately two thirds of the site - along with around 300 new homes (35% of which would be classed as “affordable”), including family housing and new apartments. If the present proposals proceed additional facilities would be provided, including a café, a crèche and nursery and a convenience store. The scheme would feature retention of the iconic cedar avenue, landscaping, and improved pedestrian, cycle and public transport links into and through the site, connecting it to the wider area with improved layouts and ‘people friendly streets’ with restricted vehicular access. The expressed intention is to convert the location into a community hub and employment centre, in accord-

Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 Programme is available now! Excitement is now building just two months before the launch of Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, with celebrations showcasing local arts and heritage across all of the Horsham District. The key to all the fun and entertainment is the 56 page programme covering January to June 2019. The programme, which includes full events listings, is free and available now from leisure centres, museums, surgeries, libraries, with many more currently being distributed. Additionally, the online events diary is also now available with its exhaustive listings of over 150 supplementary Year of Culture Fringe events. Look out for the Year of Culture Fringe logo. The Fringe events can be found at www.hdculture2019.co.uk Commenting on the events line up Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “2019 is set to be a complete game changer of a year for the people of Horsham District and beyond with an unprecedented range of unique cultural experiences to enjoy. “The line -up of events is innovative, exciting, and often interactive, creating opportunities for people not just to sit back and watch, but to actually perform and take part themselves. For starters, there will be 38 unique events which are being grant funded by the Council as part of the 12 month celebration. These projects are as diverse as the first ever Horsham Film Festival and first ever Sussex Comedian of the Year contest, the return of the District Schools Dance Festival, a wheelbarrow race in Steyning, a ukulele festival in Ashington, light projections across the whole
District and the opportunity to write poems to help create a Poets’ Corner in Horsham Park, to name just a few. Larger projects, such local artist Sarah Duffield’s specially commissioned paintings to encapsulate our District and outdoor Shakespeare theatre – A Midsummmer Night’s Dream at Knepp, are also taking place. To view the full list, visit www. hdculture2019.co.uk. Patron of the Horsham District Year of Culture, world renowned author and local resident Julia Donaldson MBE, said: “There’s so much going on with this project I’ve found it hard to choose my favourites. I know I’ll enjoy Steyning Book Lovers’ Week and the promenade theatre piece, A Norman’s Tale, in Bramber. And the writing and sculptural project at Warnham Local Nature Reserve is definitely tempting me. “I hope residents will really involve themselves in the Year of Culture and tell all their friends what’s going on, so that we can welcome more people to the area and show off just how much we have to offer.” A second programme will be available from May 2019 to cover July to December 2019. 300 new homes too many? There was a positive response regarding the retention of trees and praise for the envisaged overall level of green space. Concerns related to the proposed number of houses, some feeling that 300 would be too many. Replacement of the gatehouse was also not universally popular and some felt that busy residents would need and welcome additional health and educational facilities. And, there was major concern over neighbouring roads being too congested and narrow, possibly hindering much appreciated cycle lane provision. Poor visibility at the mini roundabout at the junction of Wimblehurst and Parsonage Roads was also highlighted. A new pedestrian footbridge was also sought, together with better links to Horsham Station. WSCC responded by saying that they are committed to delivering high quality flexible space, promoting the site to attract the range of uses mentioned in the feedback, allowing businesses to “scale up” as they grow. 300 houses would be the maximum, the final amount could be lower, and proposals for older citizens might be included. There could also be improvement
of health, educational, sports and recreational facilities. Better road access and safety considerations would be implemented for all users, and landscaping and planting introduced through and around the campus. Any further feedback received before the deadline will be taken on board. It is expected that an outline planning application will be submitted to Horsham District Council later this year. Once approval has been obtained a development partner would be sought, with, after further authorisation, redevelopment work at the site commencing in 2021 on a phased basis lasting at least five, possibly seven years. The company Communications Potential has been employed by WSCC to manage the consultation process, their telephone number and e mail address are: 0207 357 8000 - info@communicationpotential.co.uk. Children at Slinfold C of E Primary School who worked hard to each create a poppy to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of WW1, were delighted to see their work forming a stunning display as they returned to school this week. Over 120 pupils ranging from age 4 to 11 took part in the project by creating poppies out of a range of mediums including ceramics, collage, printing, pointillism and tissue paper. And every poppy is now included in the stunning display that has taken pride of place in the school’s entrance hall. Marlies Barber who created and co-ordinated the schools project with fellow teaching assistant
Judith Petros said “The children have really enjoyed doing this. They have been captivated by the history of WW1, and the chance to raise money from the poppies they have created to help needy war veterans. It has been a delight to see them really take an interest in such an important part of our history, whilst really enjoying the creative challenge of making their own special poppies.” Some of the ceramic poppies will be moved to decorate the village’s war memorial over the weekend of the 10th and 11 and many of the poppies will also be sold in the village to raise money for the Royal British Legion

Remember, remember first aid in November
St John Ambulance is urging everyone to learn basic first aid skills ahead of the Bonfire Night celebrations. Its volunteers will be attending firework events across London
and the South, so that anyone who needs first aid gets it quickly. However, injuries are much more likely to occur at private parties, where trained volunteers won’t be on hand to help.
Statistics show that thousands of people will visit A&E every year for treatment of a firework-related injury*. But with some basic first aid skills, everyone can be prepared to help in a firework first aid emergency. Elizabeth Harper, regional director for London and South at St John Ambulance, said: “Every year, our highly-skilled volunteers are asked to provide first aid cover for members of the public who want to celebrate Bonfire Night at major events in their communities. Attendees at these events can be reassured that help is on hand if they need it. However, we also want to provide families having bonfire parties at home with a few handy tips so that they can deal with minor injuries should they unfortunately occur. “Further information can be found in the first aid advice section of our website – www.sja.org.uk. Please learn these simple techniques and share them widely with family and friends so that everyone can be as safe as possible at their own private fireworks parties.
FIREWORK FIRST AID Burns or scalds If someone’s got a burn or scald: •Move the person away from the heat •Place the burn or scald under cool running water for 10 minutes minimum •If the burn is to a child, larger than your hand, on the face, hands or feet, or is a deep burn, call 999 •Remove jewellery and clothing around the area, unless stuck to the burn •Cover the burn loosely, lengthways with kitchen film to prevent infection •Don’t burst blisters •Monitor and treat for shock if necessary •Tell them to seek medical advice. Debris in the eye If someone’s got something in their eye: •Tell them not to rub it, so they don’t make it worse •Pour clean water over their eye to wash out what’s in there and/or to cool the burn
•If this doesn’t work, try to lift the debris out with a damp corner of a clean tissue •If this doesn’t work either, don’t touch anything that’s stuck in their eye – cover it with a clean dressing or non-fluffy material •Then take or send them straight to hospital. Smoke inhalation If someone’s inhaled smoke fumes: •Move them away from the smoke so they can breathe in some fresh air •Help them sit down in a comfortable position and loosen any tight clothing around their neck to help them breathe normally •If they don’t recover quickly, call 999/112 for an ambulance. For those looking for quick, easily accessible first aid information, the St John Ambulance app is available free on smartphones and the website (www.sja.org.uk) offers demo videos, an interactive game, and lots of free advice. For more information about first aid courses please call 0844 770 4800.

Women’s suffrage memorial project invites Henfield community to get involved
Henfield Community Partnership in conjunction with Horsham District Council has secured funding from the Women’s Vote Centenary Fund and the Council’s HDC’s Year of Culture, to create community mosaics for public display in Henfield. The village has a rich cultural history which will be depicted in the final mosaics. A key part of this will be the role that the village played in the women’s
movement through local resident, Elizabeth Robins and her time at Backsettown Farmhouse. The project is being delivered through specialist community arts organisation, Creative Waves, who will be asking the whole community to get involved in designing and making the mosaics. Creative Waves will be working with St Peter’s C of E School, Henfield Haven and Henfield Youth Club in particular although there will
also be open workshops where everyone will be invited along to add their thoughts, design ideas and making skills to the final artworks. The first open workshop will be held at Henfield Youth Club on Tuesday 13 November from 3.30pm onwards. The second open workshop is on Thursday 15 November at Henfield Hall from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. Everyone is invited to come along to these sessions and bring their ideas and enthusiasm as well as any maps, photos, stories etc. about Henfield past and present. This open sessions are completely free of charge and there will be fun creative activities as well as refreshments. The mosaic making workshop will take place on 8 December at Henfield Hall. Again, everyone is invited to come and make a mosaic. The creative session will be completely free of charge and there will be other fun activities for all the family to take part in, plus refreshments from the wonderful Henfield Women’s Institute. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, commented: “I am really pleased that the Horsham District Year of Culture has been able to support
this unique project for the people of Henfield and that so many locals are going to be involved in making it all happen. “It really serves to illustrate the depth and breadth of our District’s culture which is what the Year of Culture celebrations are all about. There has never been a better time to get involved with our local heritage.” Chair of Henfield Community Partnership, Carol Eastwood, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to raise the awareness of not only the village’s rich cultural history, but particularly to highlight the crucial role the village played in the development of the Women’s Movement and support for suffragettes recovering from hunger strike. We can’t wait to get involved in creating a permanent legacy in the village in time for the 2019 Year of Culture and our thanks go to Horsham District Council for their support in making this project happen”. The mosaics will be finished by the end of the year and will be on display around the village soon afterwards as a lasting memorial to Henfield’s cultural and historical importance. If you want to get involved, or for more information, please contact info@ creativewaves,co.uk
21 new homes proposed for Bennetts Road, Horsham Saxon Weald is submitting a planning application to provide up to 21 new homes for affordable rent at Bennetts Road in Horsham. The application is based on a proposal to demolish six threebedroom homes and replace them with a mix of one, two and threebedroom properties. Current residents in the six homes affected will be re-housed by Saxon Weald and supported with their moves, including appropriate compensation arrangements. Stephen Humphreys, Saxon Weald’s Head of Development, said: “Asking people to move is never a decision we take lightly, as we do appreciate the upheaval and upset it can cause. However, on a plot of land like this, we can house up to 21 households instead of just six. With levels of housing need as high as they are, it’s important we provide as many affordable homes as possible. A public consultation about the proposed development is taking place on Thursday 1 November and the planning application will then be submitted in late November.

Age UK Horsham District says goodbye to garden volunteer and asks if you can help?
The team of staff and volunteers at local, independent charity Age UK Horsham District would like to say a huge thank you to their current team of wonderful garden volunteers; Jane, Keith, Mark, Anita and Sylvia. After nearly 18 years of lovingly tending to the Age UK Horsham District garden, Sylvia, and some of her fabulous team, have decided to hang up their trowels! As a result, Age UK Horsham District are looking for a Volunteer Lead Gardener to ensure that their ‘Horsham in Bloom’ award winning garden continues to grow and
thrive, and ask “can you help?” The garden consists of lawn areas, boarders, raised beds, patio pots, hanging baskets and a green house. The members are looking for someone who: Will take the lead in coordinating the volunteer garden team; Has good general garden knowledge; Is able to plan for the different seasons; Is a good communicator, who is able to get the very best out of the gardening volunteers; Can commit to a minimum of 8 hours a week. In return they will: Offer you support in your role; Enable you to
attend relevant training if required; Reimburse any expenses you incur in the role. They are also seeking to enlarge their garden volunteer team, so would love to hear from anyone who may have some spare hours weekly, or fortnightly, to come and help out in the garden. The Charity’s Chief Executive Officer, Sonia Mangan, said: “Our garden is such a loved space. In the summer months our clients and staff can be found out there enjoying the surroundings, having a cup of tea or their lunch - it’s just beautiful. “We are so lucky to have had such a dedicated team of garden volunteers, for such a long time, to get the garden into the shape it is now. We will be sad to see some of them go at the end of the year, but we understand that circumstances change, and we are just so grateful for all that they have done. And, of course, we’re looking forward to welcoming our new volunteers soon.” If you would like to find out more, make a donation or help the charity in any way, please contact the team on 01403 260560 or info@ageukhorshamdistrict. org.uk or www.ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk
Public decide the third Proud to be Local winning charity After hundreds of votes from the local community, the winner of builders’ merchant D.W. Nye’s ‘Proud to be Local’ campaign is Jack and Jill Pre-school in Roffey, Horsham. In the third round of the competition this year, local people cast their votes for the charity of their choice via email, Facebook and in store. Jack and Jill Pre-school was the clear winner, and has been presented with a cheque for £500. The charity works to provide quality, inclusive care and education for children aged two to 12 years. Founded 24 years ago, the pre-school is based in Littlehaven Infant School, and last year opened a second site at Northolmes Junior School. The money will go towards renewing the soft flooring under the climbing equipment to ensure a safe and stimulating setting for the
children. The group now joins the Holbrook Animal Rescue Centre and 4The Youth in D.W. Nye’s line-up of 2018 winners. One more winner will be found by the end of the year. Diane Shanley from Jack and Jill Pre-school commented: “The funding, and the huge support we’ve received, has given us an incredible boost. The campaign has recognised our work to provide quality childcare for local families. We’re very lucky to have an amazing team of people who make it all possible. We all feel very Proud to be Local!” One final opportunity to nominate a local charitable cause in 2018 is available from now until Sunday 18 November. Members of the public can email details of their chosen charity to proudtobelocal@dwnye. co.uk.

Retired local police officers in Horsham join forces providing uniquely trusted and highly vetted handyman and decorating service ‘Trust in Blue’
Retired police officers with a passion for indoor and outdoor maintenance are taking up tools to bring peace of mind to people and businesses in Horsham and the local area, tackling the problem of finding a trusted and reliable handyman or tradesperson. Police officers typically retire after thirty years service and many are eager to continue playing an active role in their local community. Trust in Blue work with individuals and families, and particularly focuses on helping more vulnerable members of the community who are wary of who to trust in their home. They have also recently gained the required accreditations to work in environments, where a higher level of vetting and trust is required, such as schools, care homes and for local authorities. Managing Director, Nick OrdePowlett, hopes that the company’s unique and rigorous selection process will bring security and peace of mind to people in the area: “Our vetting process is second

a professional and trustworthy service at a fair price that is agreed prior to any work being carried out. As a company we will do the smaller jobs that some tradespeople are not prepared to do. However for me it is not all about doing the work and rushing off, sometimes it’s about sitting down and having a cup of tea and a chat. We are also able to offer advice on other topics such as crime prevention.” All Trust in Blue members are required to prove their skills and evidence their qualifications prior to joining, and all are interviewed and Enhanced DBS Checked. RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS Due to high demand for the service, we are currently welcoming applications from skilled retired Police Officers. Care South appoints Simon Bird as new Chief Executive Care South, a leading provider of residential and Home Care services across the south of England, is pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Bird as the charity’s new Chief Executive. Simon, who has been with Care South, since 2011- most recently in the role of Deputy Chief Executive - took over this week (1 November) from outgoing Chief Executive, Susan Willoughby, who is retiring. A qualified Chartered Surveyor, formerly with Pinders, Specialist Business Valuers and Consultants, Simon originally joined Care South - a not for
profit organization - as Property & Marketing Director, bringing with him a wealth of property experience and has proved invaluable in the years of development of the company. Commenting on Simon’s appointment, Chairman of Care South, Felicity Irwin DL, said: “We are delighted to have appointed Simon as Chief Executive. His vision for the company, alongside his commitment and caring nature were all significant contributory factors in our decision to make this ap-
pointment. “Having worked closely with Simon for the last seven years, I have every confidence in his ability to drive the company forward in the future, enabling Care South to develop and continue to provide the very best care for our residents and home care clients.” Simon added: “I would like to thank the Chairman and the Board of Trustees for their confidence in me and I am looking forward to continuing the fantastic work that Susan has delivered for the charity, our staff, residents and clients over the last 19 years. I am very excited to be given the opportunity to lead such a dynamic and caring organisation at an important time.” Retiring after almost 19 years with Care South, Susan Willoughby had led the charity – originally known as The Dorset Trust - which includes Sussexdown Country House Care in Storrington.

Not got a will? There’s never been a better time to get one Every November solicitors all over England take part in a scheme called Will Aid. Essentially they offer to write you a will for free – not a word many solicitors are familiar with – to help support a range of charities. The charities include such notable names as Action Aid, the NSPCC, Save the Children, Age UK and Sightsavers, amongst
Will Aid provides a great opportunity to put your affairs in order others. Whilst the solicitors work for free, the charities hope you will make a donation. They ‘recommend’ an amount of £95 for a single will, and £150 for a ‘mirror will’ for a couple. The amount, however, is up to you. Both Will Aid and the participating solicitors stress that these have to be simple and straightforward wills. They cannot include issues such as trusts. But under this scheme all wills will be drawn up by an expert, properly robust and legally bind-
ing – so probably a safer bet than self-written wills using the will kits that are available online and in stationers. Will Aid, now in its 30th year, is becoming increasingly popular. Horsham law firm Mancini Legal has already taken over 50 Will Aid bookings and is now planning to extend the initiative beyond the end of November into December. Managing Partner Alex Mancini says people owe it to their family to make a will. ‘Everybody’s time eventually comes to an end and passing without making proper preparation for your estate can leave your loved ones, who are already bereaved, in confusion,’ she told the District Post. ‘Will Aid provides a great opportunity to put your affairs in order.’ He also makes the point that Will Aid is not just there for older people. ‘These days we live in a world where some people get married,
others have civil partnerships and others simply co-habit – but the law can view these relationships in very different ways. Should anything unexpected happen, particularly where property is involved, a will ensures you pass on your wealth to those you want to receive it.’ For more details visit www.willaid. org.uk. The Capitol’s Sleeping Beauty tickets selling fast
HAODS PRESENTS...
Book by
James Goldman Music and lyrics by
Stephen Sondheim Produced Originally on Broadway by Harold Prince - Orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick More than a traditional tale of good triumphing over evil, this story of a cursed young girl, brought up by the family nursemaid, who sleeps for 100 years before being woken by true love’s kiss, is a roller-coaster ride through time, emotion, laughter and song! Containing many a reference to good morals and behaviour, the story of Sleeping Beauty will appeal to all ages. Heart FM’s Nicola Hume will add a sprinkling of christmas glitter as Fairy Good Heart, whilst battling against the curses of the evil Carabosse, played by Bad Girls’ Nicole Faraday. Familiar
faces Hywel Dowsell and James Fletcher are back to cause havoc as Nurse Nora and Lester the Jester, and there’s a welcome return for Ben Ofeodu as Herman The Henchman, after his acclaimed performance as The Genie in Aladdin back in 2016. Prince Rupert and Princess Aurora are played by Sean Smith and Natasha Hoeberigs, who will wow you with their vocal prowess, following respective appearances on The X Factor UK and The Voice Australia. Last but not least, James Dinsmore will be ruling over Horshamia (well, we are in a vaguely medieval theme this year) as eponimous King Joe.
With local references and supported by Brock Taylor, Horsham Bedding Centre (She has to sleep somewhere comfortable) and West Sussex County Times, this all contributes to ensuring that The Capitol Horsham is, once again, the perfect place for a Christmas outing this year! Expect a heady mix of musical theatre and pop songs, clever and corny jokes and plenty of audience participation! Christmas at The Capitol will once again be a fantastic festive feast of family entertainment! Tickets for Sleeping Beauty are available Online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Box Office: 01403 750220

Dining Hall, where you can have a chat with the singers, or just enjoy the festive afterglow. This year the Choral society is delighted to support Medical Detection Dogs. This is a small charity that works with dogs’ incredible power of smell. There are two main branches; Medical Alert Assistance Dogs, and Bio Detection dogs. The Alert Dogs warn people with acute medical life-threatening conditions for which they get no warning, mainly Type 1 Diabetes. When a patients suffer a sudden drop in blood sugar levels they have a big problem. The illness is normally diagnosed at a young age, and there is nothing the patient can do to prevent

The Christmas concert by Christ’s Hospital Choral Society is one of the highlights of the festive season. The school’s Chapel setting is atmospheric, the music is sublime, the audience joining is immensely satisfying, and the mince pies and wine finishes off the night beautifully. For their concert the choir presents an eclectic range of music, varying from the little- to the well-known. While some pieces will be sung by the choir only, the audience will be invited to stand up and join in with other pieces, their notes echoing around the Chapel. After the concert mince pies and wine will be served in the
it. The dogs are trained to alert their owners when their blood sugar level drops or rises outside safe levels so that they can take avoiding action. It is amazing to see the dogs in action. Bio Detection dogs assess samples of a number of illnesses, mainly breast and prostate cancers, Parkinson’s and Malaria. Illnesses cause changes in cells and this in turn gives off a smell that dogs easily and reliably identify. This helps scientists to identify what it is that dogs smell - at the moment we don’t know. The aim of this to develop an easy, cheap, and above all reliable method of testing for these illnesses at an early stage, at the GP’s, for instance. Early diagnosis means early treatment and much better chances of recovery. Breast cancers can be very hard to pick up and prostate cancers even more so. The dogs work Monday to Friday, live with families and spend their evenings and weekends as happy family pets! The Christmas concert is ever popular and it is recommended to book your places in advance. Tickets from Choir members, CH Box Office, 01403 247434 (AM only). Some tickets may still be available at the door. Donations will go to support Medical Detection Dogs. Do come, listen, and join in on Thursday 13 December, 7.30 PM, The Chapel, Christ’s Hospital School, RH13 0YP. You will love it!

Andrew Lawrence Yup, it’s that time of year. The time of year when we move over to the main house, and present a show featuring our usual array of outstanding acts, but this time with a little bit more of a profile in each of their respective cases. And this year promises to be an absolute blast. As ever, resident host Kevin Precious, will be on hand to oversee the proceedings. The featured acts are: the distinctive and illuminating Chris McCausland (Live at the Apollo), the hugely articulate and acerbic Andrew Lawrence (Live at the Apollo), and the wonderfully dry circuit legend that is John Moloney (The Comedy Store). Chris McCausland is a stand up comedian and actor. He is also the only professional comedian in the world who is blind, and after performing stand-up since 2003, is firmly established at the

10cc in concert 10cc are one of the very few acts to have achieved commercial, critical and creative success. From their breakthrough hit ‘Donna’ in 1972 to their final number one ‘Dreadlock Holiday’ in 1978, via such landmark releases as ‘I’m Not In Love’, their worldwide smash in 1975, 10cc stood for the kind of heightened pop sensibility achieved only by the very greatest music practitioners. As Rolling Stone put it in 1975, ‘There is more going on in one 10cc song than on the last ten Yes albums.’ The band return to The Hawth to play all the classics: I’m Not In Love, Dreadlock Holiday, Rubber Bullets, Donna, Art For Art’s Sake, The Things We Do For Love, Life Is A Minestrone, The Wall Street Shuffle and more. Come along for an evening of fantastic music and nostalgia at The Hawth . Performance: Wednesday 7 November, 7.30pm at The Hawth Crawley. Modern practical property, cosy cottage atmosphere
It has been an interesting and rewarding year for Chesworths in the 2018 residential property market. We have been lucky to represent some lovely people move home. The combination of skills and experience of Matthew Wheeler and Stewart Cracknell; has assisted clients who had been attempting to sell but experiencing low activity and enthusiasm in the market place generally. One consistent theme, has been
handling chains of house sales all dealt with in house from our prominent offices in North Street. We have been fortunate to secure some great feedback and lots of 5* google reviews in scenarios where different clients in the same chain have contributed to our reviews. We invite anybody contemplating a move in 2019 to benefit from a free appraisal now. In fact we have a young family locally, that are keen to secure a purchase on a house that we have
for sale in Allcard Close. We have just secured instructions to market and find the right buyer for their own home in Oak Tree Way. This smart modern home; is set deep into an aesthetically pleasing residential cul-de-sac with well-maintained accommodation including a modern fitted bathroom and kitchen. There is also a detached garage and parking space. The terrace of five similar houses is set back from the road
by a pedestrian path and communal grass verge. As you look at the front elevation the garage is slightly off set to the right hand side with a parking space in front of it. Upon entry, the front door leads into the sitting room which is nicely presented with soft colour schemes and has a large, front aspect window. Stairs rise to the first floor and there is a door into the kitchen/diner. Although it is a modern practical property there is a cosy cottage atmosphere. With rear aspect views out to the rear garden through a UPVC double glazed door and window, the kitchen has plenty of space for a table and chairs as well as for a free standing fridge/ freezer. There are matching base and eye level units with cupboards and drawers. The oven is electric with a gas hob and extractor over. There is a wall mounted Worcester gas boiler and a large cupboard. The first floor offers a spacious front aspect master bedroom with cupboard over the stairs. The second bedroom has rear aspect views of the garden. Perhaps the most notable feature is the recently re-fitted bathroom suite with Mira shower over. For a house of this size the garden is generously proportioned with gated rear access and an attractive outlook to the listed building behind. Viewings are available immediately so please, if you are considering a first house purchase or would like to move from a flat to a property with outside space, please call Matt or Stewart on 01403 255420 or email: info@chesworthsestates.co.uk

Enjoy year round activities with Horsham Cycling !
Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter After an exceptionally busy spring and summer Horsham Cycling are continuing with their equally engaging autumn and winter activities, with over 250 members – male and female from 16 to over 80s – revelling in what HC has to offer. This year HC members have been on overseas trips, 25 going to Mouscron in Belgium for the annual weekend, during which they reunited for rides with the local club, who will be making a return visit to Horsham next year. Other highly popular forays included the much savoured Isle of Wight, and New Forest stays, an Eastbourne visit, and, the Dunwich Dynamo – night ride from east London to the Suffolk coast, culminating in a well deserved breakfast on the beach. There have also been monthly reliability runs, to and from Horsham’s Forest School, where
riders select their preferred course from two or three options, including the Goodwood Gallop and the Wealden Challenge, and specify the time in which they intend to complete. There was also the recent Hill Climb at Denbies Wine Estate, won by a junior, the Downhill Challenge and road races over a looped course managed by volunteer marshalls from HC attracting riders from other clubs and leading to invitations for HC members to participate in their events. In addition to the opportunity to purchase HC bespoke cycling clothing, members are also able to obtain technical advice, HC Chairman Barbara Lefebvre telling the District Post: “Safety and enjoyment is our approach and we run group rider training for individuals, enabling them to lead groups on our Saturday and Sunday rides throughout the year and we have had sessions with an expert from Cycling UK. We’ve also held special induc-
tion tuition for complete novices to ensure that they get maximum benefit from rides.” Well attended Sunday morning rides leave from the Carfax, catering for riders of all abilities, at different speeds and distances – ranging from social to intermediate and sporting categories, while the shorter Saturday rides were initially for a faster group with a separate intermediate group added, and a social group to come. Other activities include the Summer Lunch at the Roffey Park Institute, the forthcoming Christmas Dinner and prize giving evening at Rookwood Golf Club and pub get-togethers, HC Secretary Dave Scott saying: “We have an off road section, who go out monthly, and are developing our orienteering activities. Members also arrange various informal events via social media, including a trip to Mallorca for 17 people, a “Chase the Sun” supported ride – 205 miles from sunrise to sunset – and visits to the Tour de France and the Paris Roubaix. And, other individuals have completed the Lands End to John O’Groats ride.” Horsham Cycling is inclusive, with activities for members of all cycling capabilities, Barbara Lefebvre summing up: “We’ll be continuing to provide training and advice for less experienced riders and are looking to expand our road racing, and our Saturday rides, too. Prospective members can participate in three rides before joining - our sub is just £15 a year, and we always look forward to welcoming new members!” Comprehensive information on Horsham Cycling’s calendar of activities is on their website – www. horshamcycling.co.uk and in their Chain Line magazine

Spirited Horsham battle hard Saturday October 27 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham 1 3 Wimbledon
Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Broadbridge Heath last Saturday Horsham Ladies held Wimbledon in the first half, but the visitors’ strength was telling after the break. Wimbledon opened the scoring with an open play goal when the ball was played into the D and shot straight and hard into the net. Horsham responded with a short corner – converted by Naomi Kelly, the score remaining 1-1 at the break. On the resumption determined Horsham defending kept Wimbledon at bay during a prolonged series of attacks, Captain Hannah Jackson keeping the scores level. Despite persistent Wimbledon possession, Louisa Denman broke through for Horsham, but to no avail. Eventually, however, Wimbledon’s fifth short corner was converted and after three more set pieces in quick succession they pressed through again for their third goal. Then, in a rare Horsham attack Vice Captain Bex Ross got a shot in, but it was just wide, before Sam Stares ran close, and, with
Horsham coming more into the game, concerted attacks were mounted through Denman and Ross. But, as the Wombles song tells us, “they are organised and work as a team”, Hannah Jackson saying that Horsham always knew the Wimbledon encounter was going to be a tough game, Coach Chris Bowen telling the District Post: “We pushed ourselves really hard against a strong Wimbledon National League side. They had a bit too much for us but the girls pulled together well and competed hard! It was always going to be an adjustment in this league and we are improving each game. These are really exciting times for the club and the squad as the girls are training hard and really developing our game plan.” Team Manager Jane Denman added: “We played well with plenty of spirit, but Wimbledon is a good, competitive side.” Third-placed Wimbledon has scored the most goals in the league, losing just one of their five games to date. Horsham Ladies’ Captain CJ White said: “We visit Southgate on Saturday – let’s hope for a win there.” Southgate are ninth, one place below Horsham, with Ipswich currently bottom. Cambridge top the table on level points from another East Anglian side, Harleston Magpies.

John Mickel heads to Brands gunning for unique fifth title Motor Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter Faygate racing driver John Mickel, MD of Mickel Motorsport, is no stranger to silverware – he won his first championship at the age of 12, soon followed by a world tournament and then the inaugural European trophy. With multiple championships spanning the decades, topped off with more world titles John has long since needed more room to house all of his awards. Yet, despite his seemingly relaxed persona, John remains highly competitive - and, not content with four UK National Legends titles (2001, and a back to back hat trick from 2015 to 2017), he is determined to break more new ground by lifting the title again at Brands Hatch this weekend – spurred on by the knowledge that no driver has ever been crowned UK National Legends supremo five times.
At Brands John will be driving his trademark bright orange #4 K-Seal sponsored Bonnie and Clyde style 1934 Ford replica Legend, packing a massive punch under the hood with a 1250cc Yamaha engine. Last year the title was only decided in the very last race in the adrenaline packed final round at Brands Hatch in November. John has raced around the globe and says: “All the tracks have got different configurations and there’s the weather to contend with, but racing in front of a 15,000 crowd at Brands Hatch is a particular thrill.” And, hoping that another championship beckons, giving him the unique five title haul, the final contest of the season couldn’t be tighter, John quipping: “With just 670 points splitting me from my closest rival Steve Whitelegg this year, but with 1200 points up for grabs over the complete weekend, things could get messy!” Mike Schlup, MD of sponsors
K-Seal has reinforced his driver skills that he has been quickly building over the past three years and currently sits in 12th place in the championship in the second K-Seal Legend, and James Newbury, Principal of Netsense adds: “As technology partner Netsense are very excited to be approaching a nail-biting final at Brands Hatch this weekend. Netsense have enjoyed providing support to the team and have experienced some fabulous hospitality from Mickel Motorsport at the race weekends. We place the highest value on our partnership with Mickel Motorsport and have everything crossed for another championship win.” Taking time out from his busy training schedule, John Mickel sums up saying: “This is yet another exciting finale for Mickel Motorsport and Legends racing in the UK and Europe. The team work incredibly hard to maintain a championship winning race car and we couldn’t do it without the support of our
crew and partners. I have got everything crossed for a safe but successful finish to 2018!” Rest
assured that John Mickel will be giving this quest his very best shot.

Defensive lapses torpedo Horsham Saturday October 27 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 2 5 West Hampstead Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham came into this game with a similar track record to West Hampstead - there was little to choose between the two sides in the first half, and they were on level pegging in the second until the floodgates opened, overwhelming Horsham, who responded valiantly, but without further reward. The game began with an immediate West Hampstead attack, but Horsham took the lead in the tenth minute when Sean Pearcy crashed in a short corner. The visitors promptly retaliated, but Horsham keeper Tom Surridge kicked clear before a Hampstead back hander skimmed off the post. Sam MacDonald embarked on a solo run, but Horsham were unable to capitalise ahead of Hampstead equalising with a high strike from the right, then breaking through again to lead 1-2 at the break. On the re-start a brave Horsham save averted further damage until Toby Fraser levelled the score after seven minutes. But, Hampstead regained their advantage within seconds, the onrushing Surridge

having little chance to prevent the goal. With action reverting to the other end, Zac Chinn unleashed a smash, but it went straight at the Hampstead keeper. Invigorated, Horsham went on the attack, earning two short corners amid forays from Fraser and Chinn, before a Hampstead rampage enabled them to score again from close range after their initial shot was parried. Then, the porous Horsham defence promptly conceded a fifth goal, the League’s leading scorer Chris Todd’s fourth. Creditably, Horsham responded with a further short corner, but their repeated attacks were somehow kept out, the outstanding Hampstead keeper saving prone and then palming out a high Chinn rocket, but, Horsham, paying heavily for earlier lapses, were unable to dent Hampstead’s advantage, finishing with a back to back defeat after early season promise. Horsham have now conceded the second highest number of goals in the league, Team Manager Al Campbell telling the District Post: “Defensive errors cost us dear, we didn’t give them one short corner, all of their goals came in open play – we were open at the back again”. Guildford head the table from Trojans with Woking in penultimate spot above Slough. Horsham are eighth and travel to third-placed Eastbourne on Saturday.
Horsham up to third with another strong win

Saturday October 27 – London 2 South East Horsham 34 15 Deal & Betteshanger Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Photo by Clive Turner
The scores were level at half
time, but a strong second half performance carried Horsham to their fourth consecutive win, moving them up to third behind Kent sides Beckenham and Dover. But, the visitors opened the scoring in the opening minutes after stretching the Green
& Whites’ defence. Horsham, though retaliated with a Will Johnson try, converted by his brother, former Horsham Captain, Tom, who subsequently kicked a penalty. Kyle Fairs was then thwarted for Horsham when his would be try was adjudged to have been held up, but a second try soon came, Michael Tredgett bull-dozing through. Deal, though, responded with great running, opening Horsham’s defence and culminating in a converted try to leave the score on 15 apiece at the break after the visitors had slotted home a penalty. With honours even Horsham anticipated an even more challenging second half, but Deal were unable to score again, while the hosts notched up three tries in half an hour, Joe Wilde getting over the line twice and, having previously come close, Declan Nwachukwu once, for the bonus point win, Tom Johnson’s reliable boot securing two conversions as Deal failed to capitalise on opportunities created. Post game, Horsham Coach Richard Bell said: “Another pleasing result – our fourth bonus point win on the trot. We never really got out of second gear in the first half, but after the break we managed the game really well, shutting out Deal and scoring three more tries. Our discipline has improved significantly over the last few weeks, conceding fewer penalties and our defence has tightened, letting in only three tries in our last two games while scoring 15 ourselves. We look to improve every week and will be well prepared for Aylesford Bulls in Kent on Saturday.” In the penultimate spot of the table, Aylesford have one win from seven starts, losing 59-6 to leaders Beckenham last week.
YMCA edged out by the only goal at Nyetimber Lane
Big win pushes P’boro through to second Saturday October 27 – London 3 South East Pulborough 51 17 Hastings & Bexhill Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Rampaging Pulborough inflicted their heaviest victory of the season – their second win on the bounce – against struggling East Sussex visitors, Hastings and Bexhill. Boro delighted Coach Clayton Saunders and Captain Frazer Oliphant-Hope, warming supporters on a very cold, blustery day at their Freelands ground with a bonus point try fest. Sam Beesley, Harry Bullock
and Brad Game all got over the line, Luke Kilford adding three more tries and kicking two conversions. Oliphant-Hope’s kicking maximised three of the other tries in addition to two penalties – a penalty try completing the rout. The excellent win moves Boro up to third, six points behind leaders Crowborough, with Old Williamsonians, Old Dunstonians and Lewes all on 24 points, two shy of Boro. This Saturday Pulborough venture into Kent with an 190 mile round trip to tenth-placed Folkestone, who have just two wins from seven starts, but beat another Kent side, lowly Park House, last weekend.
Saturday October 27 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Pagham 1 0 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA remain second with a game in hand over leaders Chichester City, despite being shaded by third-placed Pagham with the only goal of the match in very cold conditions last Saturday. Neither side were able to get on the score sheet up to the break and the ball did not enter the net until the 74th minute when George Gaskin intercepted an unnecessary – suicidal – YM back pass, but that was enough to give Pagham all three points. YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “It was a very disappointing outcome – if I live to be 100 I still won’t know how we came away from that game empty handed. We played as well
as we did against Eastbourne, when we scored five! On balance, nil nil at half time was about right, forwards on each side fluffing their lines. I’m not despondent because we played well, but we deserved at least a point.
We hit the post and the bar and their keeper pulled off a super save. Our Physio has been very busy – we had five good, regular players coming back from injuries playing in the Reserves
during the Pagham game and I don’t want to risk players on an unforgiving 3g pitch, which Saturday’s opponents, Langney Wanderers, play on at Eastbourne Borough’s ground. We play a lot of matches, but if we can stay where we are until Christmas – and are more clear of injuries – then I’m confident in the ability of our 20 man squad.” 17th in the table, Langney Wanderers have won just one game in their last six outings and have had only two wins from 13 league starts to date this season. Eastbourne United foot the table with one point after losing 12 of their 13 games, with Loxwood occupying the penultimate berth. On Tuesday (November 6th), YM host Storrington Community in Round 2 of the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup, Peter Buckland saying: “I like that competition – it’s a chance to play against some teams that we don’t often come up against and there is the lure of the final at Brighton’s Amex Stadium!”

HORSHAM
Saturday October 27 – Buildbase FA Trophy – 1st Qualifying Round Horsham 3 0 CorinthianCasuals Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter
RUGBY CLUB
Horsham started as they meant to proceed with Chris Smith and then Tyrell Richardson-Brown breaking through to worry Casuals from close quarters. A home goal looked inevitable, and Horsham did not have to wait long to get on the score sheet, Joe Shelley heading home in the 16th minute. With Casuals struggling to mount a meaningful attack, Rob O’Toole threatened but was thwarted by last ditch action by Bradley Comins in the Casuals’ goal. But, O’Toole was not to be denied, putting the Hornets two up in the 30th minute before the visitors had a golden opportu-
nity to claw back a goal from the penalty spot after Shelley had floored Jordan Clarke. However, perhaps epitomising Casuals’ impotency, Warren Mfula’s attempt was kept out by Horsham keeper Josh Pelling. Casuals then had another chance, only to head wide, Horsham, though, were posing danger with both Smith and O’Toole in contention, but the score remained 2-0 at the break. Casuals’ substitutions did not have the desired effect for the visitors, Smith causing worry with two forays and an O’Toole lob going close. With Horsham
doing everything except score Casuals somehow kept them at bay, despite Dean Lovegrove, Smith and Shelley’s best efforts. Appeals for a Horsham penalty went unheeded when RichardsonBrown was downed in the area, before Casuals were reduced to 10 men when Thomas Smith was injured and no further substitutions were available. Pelling then had to punch away the visitors’ most challenging effort of the game, ahead of Horsham putting the icing on the cake with a goal from late sub Jack Brivio well into injury time, Horsham Manager Dom di Paola describing Horsham’s performance as the best he’d seen
HORSHAM
since arriving at the club – a view of the Casuals’ display unlikely to be echoed by two former England cricketers supporting the Surrey visitors. Mickey and Alec Stewart, father and son, were at the game, 86 year old Mickey having played in Casuals’ forward line – and for England Amateurs. Horsham are rewarded with a home (Lancing) 2nd Qualifying Round tie on Saturday November 10th against Potters Bar Town, currently seventh in the Bostik Premier Division. The home league match against Greenwich Borough listed for November 10th will be re-scheduled at a date to be advised.
