Horsham’s Set4Success Sports Stars Celebrated at South Lodge Horsham’s brightest sporting talents were recently honoured at the 2018 Set4Success Awards at South Lodge Hotel. The event, now in its eighth year, celebrates and recognises the achievements of young talented sports people in the Horsham District. To date 161 awards have been given. Previous winners include England golfer Marco Penge, Commonwealth Games Hockey Silver Medallist Lucy Woods, and Brighton and Wales footballer Bronwen Thomas. This year’s recipients of the award were Owen Street (Waterpolo), Charlie Ferris (Triathlon), Amber Ranson (Swimming), Corlia Robertson (Judo), Emily Orman (Football), Joshua Tavolieri (Basketball), Ellie Worrall (Judo), Harvey Claridge (Motor Cycle Racing), Orla Brothers (Athletics), Thea Kirton (Taekwondo), Caitlin MacGregor (Trampolining), Alexandra Baker (Basketball), Harry Baker (High Jump), Fynn Talley (Football), Zack Wake (Judo), Ryan Elnaggiar (Judo), and Marcus Rolfe (Judo). Unfortunately, four winners could not be present at the event, as three were away studying, following their award of scholarships to Universities in USA and UK, and one was representing England in an International football contest in Dublin. Set4Success is delighted to have selected and rewarded such remarkable talent. Top BBC

commentator, Simon Brotherton, presented the awards and gave an inspirational talk about the joys and hazards of being a top event commentator, and highlighting how similar they are to the ups and downs encountered by leading sports stars. Set4 Success is a charity that aims to help young Horsham based sports people achieve their dreams. It was initially founded in 2010 by Horsham Rotary Club, with Horsham District Council, Horsham Schools, and Places for People joining the venture before the initial launch. Currently, additional sponsors and supporters are Wakefield Jewellers, Kreston Reeves, ATOM, Tactic Counsel, Treetop Design and Print, and most recently, AAH Magazine, with Editor and Proprietor, Ben Morris, now part of the S4S Management Team. Set4Success is always seeking new sponsors and would love to hear from any organisation that would like to be associated with helping our future sports stars. We can be contacted via our Facebook Page: ‘set4success’. A cheque of £1,000 from North West Sussex Seagulls, the local Brighton & Hove Albion supporters club, was gratefully received at the event. This money comes from collections taken on the coaches taking BHAFC fans to and from the AMEX Stadium. Thanks to all those fans who contributed.

A brand-new school on the borders of Crawley and Horsham will be opening its doors to children next year and prospective families can learn all about it at three upcoming open events. Kilnwood Vale Primary School will offer a purpose-built environment for children to ‘grow, learn and flourish’ in Faygate as part of the GLF Trust, which already has two schools in West Sussex. The school will join Forge Wood Primary, which opened in September 2016 and Southgate Primary, both in Crawley. The new school will be become part of the wider group of schools across Surrey, Croydon, Wokingham and Oxfordshire, and will benefit from the Trust’s experience of opening new schools. The most recent GLF school to have an Ofsted inspection was Chestnut Park Primary in Croydon, which opened in September 2015 and was judged to be ‘outstanding’ in every category when the report was released June 2018. Kilnwood Vale Primary School will open next September with a class of 30 Reception children. The school’s nursery will also open in September with places available for two, three and fouryear-olds. “Our new school will benefit from sharing outstanding resources and support in every aspect of school life,” said Jon Chaloner, CEO of GLF Schools, “We are looking forward to welcoming the first families to the new school which will be at the heart of the Kilnwood Vale community. Opening a new school is always an exciting time and we

are delighted to have this opportunity.” Planning permission for the single-storey free school was granted in the summer and work is underway on the Faygate site, with construction team Wilmott Dixon working on the project. The school will ultimately be two-form entry, with associated nursery spaces. There will be drop-off access at the new building, which will be set back from the road. Further parking will be provided in the neighbourhood centre, with a park and stride in the next phase of development. Applications for places at Kilnwood Vale Primary School have already started rolling in after the first open event last month, and there are three more events before applications for places close. The next open event will be held on Saturday, November 17 at Bewbush Barn Church, Frances Edwards Way, and prospective families are invited to attend the session which starts with a presentation at 10am. There will be further events on Wednesday, December 5 at Forge Wood School at 2pm and 4pm, where there will be the opportunity to see another of GLF’s new schools. The final session will be on Tuesday, January 8 with a presentation at 4pm at Faygate Village Hall. The closing date for applications to join the first cohort is January 15, 2019, with offers being made on April 16. Further information about the school and how to apply for places can be found on the website at www.kilnwoodvaleschool.org

£10,000 reward offered to catch the Loxwood Arsonist

Wanted posters have been appearing around Loxwood and the surrounding areas as the owners of the Loxwood Meadow offer a £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of an arsonist or arsonists who set a barn and seating area alight in the early hours of Friday 27th July.

Home of the Loxwood Joust and located off the B2133 north of Billingshurst, the fire that caused an estimated £35,000 of damage also endangered the 50-acre woodland and the people that were on site in the meadows at that time. Thankfully, the barn was unoccupied and no-one was hurt; with the quick response from the fire

brigade also ensuring that the fire did not spread to the surrounding tinder dry woodlands. Police are investigating the arson and PC John Blight of the Chichester Investigations team said; “Our enquiries have so far not identified the motive or those responsible for this offence, but the offer of the reward by the land owners, subject to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible, may well produce information.” Maurice Bacon, who owns the farmland said “The Loxwood Meadows are special, and have received recognition for their wealth of natural habitats and ecofriendly management. We are so very lucky that the fire that was started in the midst of the very hot, dry weather did not decimate them. I really hope that this reward will trigger people’s memory’s for information that will lead to the capture of the arsonists, and that our distinctive posters will also encourage people to come forward if they can help.” Should you have any information, you can contact the police online, or call 101, quoting serial 212 of 27/07. Local charity makes tough to decision to close Crawley centre Local charity, The Springboard Project, has announced the forthcoming closure of its Crawley centre. In a statement, the charity explained the difficult circumstances that led to the decision: It is with great sadness that it is Springboard’s intention to close our centre based in Langley Green, Crawley. However, it is important to stress that the organisation is not closing and our vital services including our short breaks sessions for families with a disabled child in Crawley will remain. The ongoing financial pressures being felt across the voluntary and public sector, constant and increasing constraints of local authority budgets, and more competition for income from fundraising have all contributed to the need to reduce fixed costs and drive the organisation’s future sustainability. This has been a very difficult decision for Springboard, and one in which we have taken due care and time over, to see if any solutions could be found to remain based at the centre. Unfortunately, the financial implications of increases in rents, utilities, and general up keep of the centre has meant that its continued operating costs have put the whole organisation under significant financial risk that is not sustainable in such challenging circumstances. Reducing our fixed overheads will help ensure that the organisation is able to direct charitable funds

where there is the greatest need and make Springboard sustainable in years to come so we can deliver the best possible services within our limited resources. What is the impact on services? Springboard will continue to run services in Crawley, Horsham and Worthing, and we remain committed to ensuring those families with a disabled child are able to get the support they need. Although the centre in Crawley will close, our short breaks provision will continue, which includes our:  Crawley 0-6’s group  Crawley 6-12’s group  Crawley 12-18’s group We understand that this will come as a huge blow to families we have been working with who have grown to love the centre and we know it has become a welcome home and base for many. However, we know from our delivery in other areas that we will continue to offer great outcomes for children, young people, and families. “It is extremely sad that we will be leaving the Langley Green property, and we are incredibly proud of the work we have done there. Our short breaks for families with a disabled child will continue in the county and we will be embedding our activities within the local community and help to develop more inclusive and assessable facilities in Crawley” Ben Burt, Chief Executive

Pregnant women urged to claim free flu jab Pregnant women across Crawley are being urged to get the free flu vaccination now to protect themselves and their children from getting ill this winter. Last year, less than half pregnant women in Sussex claimed their free flu jab, leaving them vulnerable to catching the flu, which can be dangerous for those at risk of serious health complications, including pregnant women. This is because pregnancy naturally weakens the body’s immune system, which could cause complications for pregnant women as they are less able to fight off infections, increasing the risk of them and their unborn baby becoming ill. Even those who have had the flu vaccination before, it’s important to get it again because the type of virus in circulation changes every year, so the vaccine changes too. It is safe for both pregnant and breastfeeding women and actually passes some protection on to babies in the first few months of life. Winter is set to be extremely difficult for the NHS across the country, especially on A&E departments and local GP surgeries as they cope with the an-

nual rise in numbers of people seeking treatment. Local doctors believe pressure on health services could be significantly reduced if those eligible take up the opportunity to get their free jab. Allison Cannon, Chief Nurse and Director of Quality for East Surrey and Sussex Clinical Commissioning Groups, said: “The flu vaccination is the best protection against flu. It’s safe during any stage in pregnancy, from the first few weeks through to the woman’s due date, and doesn’t carry any risks for mother or baby. By getting protected now you will also help ease pressure on local health services, freeing them up to care for those most in need. “The flu jab is painless and over in seconds – contact your GP or pharmacist to get the flu jab.” For more information visit www.nhs.uk/conditions/ pregnancy-and-baby/flu-jabvaccine-pregnant

Ben Steel, 15, from Horsham, West Sussex has been named as one of the winners of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s annual photography competition for 2018. Ben won the Youth Environment & Energy category for his photo ‘Groyne at Worthing’, which captures a coastal defence on Worthing beach. Ben was drawn to the waves breaking on the shore and as the tide came in, he was intrigued as to how such a simple piece of engineering could withstand the power of the sea. The IET Engineering & Technology Photographer of the Year 2018 was launched earlier in the year in a bid to challenge misconceptions of engineering and demonstrate

the ingenuity, breadth and vibrancy of the profession. It was open to any photograph of an engineeringrelated subject that captures the dynamic, creative and progressive face of engineering and engineers today. Commenting on winning, Ben said: “After taking many images while we were visiting the beach as a family, this image stood out from the others, so after reading about the competition in the IET magazine, I decided to give it a go and see what happened. I was totally shocked and very surprised to find out that my image had won for its category! “To me, engineering means being able to shape our environment and overcome problems by using

both simple and complex ideas – my image shows how the simplest of designs can work especially in harsh environments such as the beach front.” The IET received over 400 photos from young people and adults across the world, who submitted photos to five categories: Design and Production; Digital; Environment and Energy; Structures and Transport. IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year and judge, Dr Ozak Esu, said: “Engineering is exciting and fast-changing – shaping the world around us and improving the quality of our everyday lives. And yet traditional images of engineering and engineers still focus on one area of the industry with hard hats and dirty overalls. “We launched our photography competition again this year to help banish this outdated image and we received some brilliant photographs from across the world – I’d like to congratulate our winners and highly commended entrants.” To celebrate ‘Tomorrow’s Engineers Week’ (5-9 November), which is nationwide initiative that focuses on changing the image of engineering, the winning and highly commended photos were featured at the British Science Museum for a short exhibition on Friday (9 November) and then placed at the IET’s London HQ, Savoy Place.

Crates Local Produce is the best dressed shop in town

Crates Local Produce in Horsham’s historic Carfax are the deserving winners of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 Spirit of Horsham AmeriCARna Award for their authentic shop displays during the American themed town centre event earlier in September this year. The iconic corner shop entered into the spirit of the event with its window dressings, ‘moonshine bar’ and American themed costumes. The owners even hosted Elvis in the building, providing a changing room for ‘The King’ himself before he took to the

stage on the Carfax bandstand. After presenting the award to Crates owner, Marion Carter, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, commented: “We were delighted to sponsor this award and I congratulate Crates for getting into the spirit of the AmeriCARna event. “This level of enthusiastic involvement is just what our independent businesses should be looking to achieve to get the most from these brilliant town centre event opportunities. “Look out for the many more

events which will be coming to all towns and villages across our District during the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019’. Tens of thousands of people flocked to Horsham’s AmeriCARna event on Sunday (30 September) and enjoyed a celebration of all things American in the town centre and Horsham Park. Thanks to Horsham District Council expanding on last year’s first AmerciCARna event, visitors were able to enjoy a spectacle unmatched in recent times with more car and bike displays, more food and drink, an American sports zone, an indoor activities area and much more. Altogether a great fundraiser for the event charity, St Catherine’s Hospice. Crates brings the best and freshest of local produce into Horsham Town Centre. The South East is blessed with hundreds of local producers and artisans who are rearing, growing and baking everything from artisan bread, fruit and vegetables, dairy, eggs, preserves, chocolate, oils, coffee roasting together with many brewers and wine makers. Crates is one of the only outlets in Sussex to stock almost entirely local produce, directly sourced.

Official Opening of the Early Years Department

The Bishop of Horsham, The Right Reverend Mark Sowerby, has formally opened the new Early Years department at St. Mary’s C of E (Aided) Primary School in Pulborough with a prayer and a blessing. Bishop Mark then cut the red ribbon and was able to meet the children, teachers and parents over coffee and cake.

Samantha Copus, Acting Head Teacher, talked about the wonderful new learning environment for the children at St. Mary’s Pulborough. The school was also thrilled to have Professor Stephen Heppell and James Clarke from ‘Learniture’, who designed the new learning space, attend the opening. Professor Heppell, who has

fitted many learning spaces all around the world, said, “There’s an awful lot of science in making furniture that lets learners be the best they can possibly be. “There is also a lot of common sense and practical experience. We’ve stirred all this into the pot and we’re pretty pleased with the recipe that’s emerging.” The two Reception classrooms at St Mary’s had a complete makeover during the summer holidays and new furniture and equipment has been installed for light, bright learning spaces. Lee Callender, Head of Early Years, has been delighted with the transformation and the valuable advice from Stephen Hepple and James Clarke. “We have a variety of different spaces that can be created from our furniture collection,” said Lee, “spaces to gather together, spaces to be quiet, and contemplative spaces to work collaboratively or in groups. The children are already making the most of their new learning spaces which is wonderful to see.”

The West Sussex Woodturners create hand crafted items for St Barnabas House hospice’s Christmas fairs

The West Sussex Woodturners were delighted to present St Barnabas House hospice with a wide variety of hand turned wooden items to sell at their Christmas fairs and in their shops, at their monthly meeting on Sunday. The group has supported St Barnabas House for several years, and after the popularity of the beautiful wooden creations that raised many much needed funds for the charity last year, the club’s members chose to once again to support St Barnabas House for Christmas 2018. Ron Inglis, who received support from St Barnabas House when he lost his eldest son, has supported the charity personally for over 10 years and regularly makes items to help them raise essential funds. He said “The support of The West Sussex Woodturners has once again been astounding and I am proud to be a part of this group that does so much behind the scenes to help both charities and local groups. St

Barnabas House does amazing work for the patients and their families and I am delighted that the club have chosen to appoint them as their charity once again.” The 100 strong members which include men, women and children from all across Sussex and Surrey, embraced the call to action and created the hand crafted items in their individual workshops. Working from Preston to Angmering, Horsham, Slinfold, Coolham, Smallfield Worthing, Yapton, Crawley and Durrington, to name but a few, the wide array of items were created using many different techniques. Members were asked to turn an item to be donated to St Barnabas House, and a beautiful selection of bowls, pens, goblets, egg cups, platters, wooden fruit, light pulls and Christmas decorations were just some of the items donated. Made from a variety of different woods and finished with natural wax, dyes and specialist paint

finishes, many members were keen to donate some of their finest work. Wendy Bardsley, Community Fundraising Manager for St Barnabas House, was delighted to attend the meeting and said “The West Sussex Wood Turners have been supporting St Barnabas House for a number of years. They make donations of their beautiful hand crafted work which are taken to charity fairs to raise funds for St Barnabas House; the local hospice for the Adur, Arun and Worthing areas. St Barnabas House gets very little government funding and relies on groups like The West Sussex Woodturners to help us raise the £6.5 million in care costs needed each year. St Barnabas House looks after on average 115 patients every single day of the year both in the hospice and in patients own homes, this is achieved with the help of groups like The West Sussex Woodturners. Thank you so much for their kind and ongoing support.” Speaking for the club, Ian Rudge the Chairman, said “The West Sussex Woodturners meet on the first Sunday of each month and the passion for woodturning and sharing the skills associated with the many techniques we use, really helps us to provide our support and assistance for a variety of community projects. Christmas time is always special and once again the club’s members have worked together as a whole to create this wide array of items. We really hope that this helps to make a difference once again.” If you would like to find out more about the West Sussex Woodturners, please have a look at the website http://www.westsussexwoodturners.co.uk or contact Ian Rudge on wswtchairman@hotmail.com.

Curry Village brings nouveau twist to classic Indian dishes

When you enter Curry Village you are hit by its vibrant interior, upbeat background music and a pleasant greeting from Belal the owner of the relatively new restaurant in Jengers Mead. A veteran of 13 years in the restaurant trade he is hoping to bring something different to diners in the area. Taking my seat I’m impressed by how the venue appears modern yet traditional, its small but not too small and you get the sense that when its at capacity the atmosphere is one of excitement

and adventure. You may think ‘adventure’ is the wrong word but when Belal hands you the menu you very quickly see that this is not your typical Indian restaurant. With Dishes that originate from as far south as Kerala to more northern areas such as Harayana its clear the objective here is to excite your taste buds and give you a more diversive Indian food experience. Whilst you can still enjoy the traditional dishes such as a Balti or Passanda they are prepared with a twist that ensures they look, taste and feel different

to what you might expect from a traditional restaurant in town. Executive Chef RajKumar Rao has put his own spin on many dishes and the signature collection on the menu jumps out right away. Before we got to experience that, Belal mentioned the starters to us, it’s a fantastic mix to cater for all tastes and I found myself devouring a Chicken Malai Kebab eagerly, prepared with mozzarella cheese, garlic and ginger I felt like I had found a new love but then came the soft shell crab, marinated with fresh lemon juice and fried in Oriental butter, presented beautifully with a mango sauce and accompanied by a Chili sauce you get to enjoy so many flavours. It almost felt like I was cheating on the Chicken with how much I enjoyed the crab. It was almost time to choose a main course but Belal was kind enough to allow us to try the Lime Chilli pan fried scallops, once again presented with care and passion its a dish full of colour, the lime, chili and cajun help give it a mixture of flavours and it doesn’t disappoint. With the signature menu being one we are keen to try we order a Lal Gosht, a lamb dish with a mint fragrance, green chilis, fried onion and garam masala. Not wanting to limit the experience we also choose Shabnam Chingri, a lobster dish from Kerala, the taste of coconut is instantly recognizable and the Keralian spices seep through to give you a varied experience with each mouthful. Both dishes were brilliant and

Stunning Lines - Vincent Lines

A recent major donation of art work by the family of Vincent Lines, a leading 20th century British artist, has gone on display at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. The skilful pen and ink drawings portray the places and people of the Horsham area in the 1930s, when Vincent was the popular head of Horsham Art School. Marking the 50th anniversary of his death, the family of Vincent Lines have made the generous

decision to gift Horsham Museum some 20 works of art, including 10 drawings of Horsham and its area. Featuring key local landmarks, such as St Mary’s Church, Chesworth Farm, Park House, and Market Square, illustrate Horsham in a bygone era. The generous donation has inspired Horsham Museum’s 2019 calendar ‘Stunning Lines’ which features all of his district images given to the Museum, which is now available to purchase. The exhibition Stunning Lines is on display in the Museum’s Watercolour Gallery, a fitting place to display one of the leading watercolour artists of the 20th century, who later became Vice President of The Royal Watercolour Society. The family have also given the museum two oils, including a brilliant self-portrait with paint pallet in hand and two watercolours of Le Havre, a medium for which he had national recognition. Reflecting his other career as an illustrator of books, Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum have also been given a rare lithographic stone. Vincent Lines came to Horsham in his 20s to take up the position of Principal at the Horsham School

of Art and, under his leadership, the school flourished throughout the 1930s. It was Vincent who appointed the renowned stone letter carver, and typeface designer and artist, David Kindersley, to teach at the school. During World War Two Vincent, who was living in Horsham at the time, was asked by Sir Kenneth Clark to join the team of 97 watercolour artists to record Britain that was most likely to be destroyed by bombing and then by progress. So starting in the South East, they moved across the country using watercolours, because Clark hoped that the scheme would help preserve this characteristic medium. Over 1,500 watercolours were produced, with Vincent painting local scenes, including The Causeway. After the war, Vincent moved to Hastings, where he became principal of the Hastings School of Art inspiring other pupils. He also continued to draw and illustrate books, including The English Windmill published in the 1950s. Stunning Lines by Vincent Lines at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open until 9 February 2019. Admission is free of charge. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am -5pm. For more information see www.horshammuseum.org.

if I was choosing one over the other it would be the Lal Gosht, the thick sauce, the mint and the spices give it a unique flavour that if I was to try anywhere else now would instantly make me think of curry village these were both served with the curry village special rice and accompanied by a pint of Cobra. The drinks menu is wide ranging with 6 white wines, 6 reds and 1 rose alongside a vari-

ety of soft drinks. A desert menu was given to us at the end of our meal, I felt full enough to not want to eat any more but next time I am there, I just know I am having some of that ice cream. It seems the Belal is living a dream here, creating his own vision of how Indian food should be served and based on this experience it certainly works.

Age UK Horsham District welcomes Jeremy Quin to their Lavinia House club

On Friday 2 November, MP for Horsham, Jeremy Quin, spent time with members of the Age UK Horsham District Horsham Club for older people that is based at the Charity Centre in Lavinia House, Dukes Square. The club benefits from great facilities which are inclusive, accessible and welcoming, and Jer-

emy was treated by the members to a wonderful afternoon tea. Members of the Horsham Club invited Mr Quin to discuss their concerns about potential changes for drivers of community transport buses, following a letter they recently sent to the MP on this topic. Friday afternoon’s session was

well attended with most of the 30 members that met with Mr Quin able to be there, as a result of the local community transport buses provided by Community Transport Sussex. The service they provide is vital to them and, without it, many older people would just not leave their homes. Mr Quin was able to reassure the members that the government are aware of the impact that any changes could have and were working to avoid that. He also heard members’ concerns about buses and other local services. Calls to not ignore staff’s mental health in the workplace

A WELLBEING expert from Horsham is warning employers not to ignore the mental health of their staff - which is linked to millions of days lost in sickness every year. Nicky Maidment, of PurpleMinds, believes openness around

mental health issues leads to a happier, healthier and more productive workforce. She said: “We need to encourage a culture of talking about mental health issues, just like any other illness. “It could be costly to a company to ignore the issue, both in

terms of manpower and morale, whereas talking to people and supporting them can be beneficial all-round.” The most recent Office of National Statistics report found nearly 16 million days were lost in a year due to sickness related to mental health. Issues such as stress, depression, anxiety, and more serious conditions such as manic depression and schizophrenia, often led to time off work. Nicky, a Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner, has worked with many corporate workers who have taken time off following pressures at home and in the workplace. Rhonda Hopkins was a manager in the NHS who took sick leave for stress-related reasons, following workplace pressures and chronic pain while recovering from an injury. She said: “I felt defeatist and unable to see a way forward. I was afraid my injury would stop me from continuing in my role, which I’d done since I was 19.” After being referred to Nicky through a work occupational

Truly local, Truly independent Official sponsors of

scheme, she learned coping strategies and ways to develop a more positive mind-set, which she still uses today. Rhonda, who has since set up her own business to provide medical cover at events, encourages others to be open and seek help. She explained: “There’s nothing wrong with asking for help. If you don’t, then you won’t learn the tools to manage issues and will keep repeating the same patterns of behaviour.” Nicky, a former Millais School pupil (formerly Forest Girls), added: “When people are really unhappy in one area of life, it can often manifest itself into other areas and be a downward spiral. “It’s crucial to speak up and seek help. People often feel helpless and out of control in these circumstances. “But there is a choice on a deeper level about how we think, behave and react - even if consciously it doesn’t seem that way at the time.” Nicky advises business owners to be aware of signs indicating team members may be struggling. This includes a change in mood, work output or indecisiveness and, of course, repeated unexplained absences. She explained:

“Some people may behave out of character or inappropriately in the office, for example withdrawing or shouting. “It’s important to understand there may be reasons behind their behaviour first, rather than disciplining them as the standard first course of action.” ACAS (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service), said showing concern for workers’ mental health should not just be seen as a legal duty – as there is a business case for it too. The body, which gives free and impartial advice on workplace relations and employment law, said mental health support can build trust, improve staff retention and boost productivity. Nicky, who uses techniques to help people explore the way they think in order to resolve issues and achieve goals, concluded: “If employers can help an employee resolve their problems, even if they appear not to be work related, then it will improve their performance. “It will also raise morale in the workplace, reduce sick days and be cost effective for both the employee and the employer. It’s a win-win for all concerned.” For more information, visit http://www.purplemindsnlp.com/

Horsham District local retailers set to dress for success this Christmas

In the run up to Christmas independent retailers across the Horsham District are set to benefit from a special promotion, supporting them in the art of creative window, and in store, displays. The promotion, organised by Horsham District Council’s Economic Development team, forms part of an overall training and support programme - ‘Your Customer Experience’ - for independent retailers across the District, mak-

ing visits to our high street more enjoyable and rewarding for all. Businesses wishing to take part in the Christmas display competition need to register with the Council online at: www.windowwonderland.info All retail businesses taking part will then be issued with a window sticker to display. The competition will be judged by specialist consultant Chris Billington, from Progressive Results Training, along with local media.

As part of a support package, Chris Billington has developed a short, top tips video featuring the work he has done with a Henfield independent business. The ‘Your Customer Experience’ free retail training programme is already well underway and receiving lots of positive feedback from the businesses taking part. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Councillor Gordon Lindsay, said: “Horsham District is renowned for

its excellent selection of independent shops which are a real draw for shoppers. “Everyone appreciates a welldressed shop window or display and at Christmas time these displays are a big part of the overall Christmas shopping experience that makes a visit to our towns and villages so enjoyable. “I hope many businesses will get involved to reap the benefits of the training available and together make all of our towns and villages a real wonderland of shop windows

Colly Good Show! Earlier this month, Collyer’s welcomed the highly regarded Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company, who ran workshops and gave wonderful performances at the Ofsted Outstanding sixth form college. Head of Dance, Emma Gogan, planned the event. She said: “The whole day provided a great opportunity for the students to experience a professional dance environment at an extremely high level. “The students learnt a long section from the professional work, Justitia. They also had the

unique opportunity to experience what it is like to work in the company and the kind of creative choreographic tasks they would do. The sessions were really fullon! Fun, but tiring!” Dance teacher, Hayley Ovens, who helped co-ordinate the action packed day, was delighted: “Our amazing students took everything in and were hugely inspired to aspire to these high levels. The Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company were brilliant.” Emma added: “The workshops pushed our students to the limit and really made many of them

A Celebration of Mozart As the dark nights draw in, come and enjoy an evening of lightfilled music performed by the West Sussex Philharmonic Choir at St. Mary’s, Horsham this Saturday (17 November). The centrepiece of the concert is the Requiem in D Minor, Mozart’s final masterpiece, and one of his most moving and inspiring works. He wrote part of it in Vienna in late 1791, but it was left unfinished at his death in December of the same year, at the age of 35. The Requiem as we know it today is the work of many hands, and the air of mystery and intrigue surrounding its completion may never be fully dispelled. Performance: Saturday 17 November, 7.30pm, St. Mary’s Church, the Causeway, Horsham. Tickets: £14 (students £7) on the door & from Waterstone’s, The Candy Box and the Horsham Piano Centre.

Remem Horsham’s Carfax saw thousands flock to the War Memorial to pay their respects at this year’s Remembrance Sunday Service on Sunday 11 November. The service also commemorated 100 years since the end of the First World War. The Remembrance Parade arrived at the War Memorial at 10.50am. Led by The Rev David Bouskill, the service began with the hymn ‘O God Our Help in Ages Past’. This was followed by The Last Post. The vicar then led The Exhortation: ‘They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.’

The two minutes silence, in memory of the fallen, was then held at 11am. The Chairman of Horsham District Council, Cllr Peter Burgess, led the wreath laying on behalf of the people of the Horsham District. He was followed by Mr Nigel Caplin, Chairman of the Royal British Legion Horsham Branch, Jeremy Quin MP laid the third wreath, and the fourth wreath was laid by West Sussex County Council’s Cllr Morwen Millson. Representatives of the armed services and youth organisations then laid their wreaths, each as a mark of solemn respect. When the last wreath was laid, the Parade Marshall called the Parade to attention and one verse of the National Anthem was sung. A blessing and Thanksgiving Prayer marked the end of the ser-

vice at the War Memorial. A church service then followed at the Parish Church of St. Mary The Virgin in the Causeway, Horsham to which everyone was invited. Working with the Church and Horsham District Council, the Royal British Legion was the main local organiser of Horsham’s Remembrance Sunday Service. The service was originally conceived as a commemoration of the war dead of the First World War, but, after the Second World War, the scope of the ceremony was extended to focus on the nation’s dead of both World Wars, and in 1980 it was widened once again to extend the remembrance to all who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country, and all those who mourn them. A number of Remembrance Sunday services took place throughout the Horsham District on this day.

Ahead of the Remembrance Sunday Service in Horsham’s Carfax on 11 November, Horsham District Council’s Chairman gathered with members of Denne Neighbourhood Council, the Horsham Society, the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion, and children from St Mary’s Pre-School, in the recently refurbished St Mary’s Garden of Remembrance, Horsham, for a short service of remembrance and reflection, marking the centenary of the signing of the armistice. The St Mary’s Pre-School children marched along Normandy to the gardens singing the hymn ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ and carrying white doves of peace which they had made. Horsham District Council Chairman, Cllr Peter Burgess, welcomed everyone and spoke of the historic significance of the Garden of Remembrance before Father David Bouskill led a short

service of remembrance. Commenting on the service and the garden’s refurbishment, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “It was especially poignant that some 100 years after the gardens were first established, and ahead of the 100th anniversary of the armistice, we gathered to hold this special service. “It was also particularly touching to be joined by the youngsters of St Mary’s Pre-School and members of the various partnership groups who have helped the Council to guide this significant refurbishment project. “My thanks go out to the Horsham Society and Denne Neighbourhood Council for their support with this project, and to Horsham Green Gym and the Horsham branch of Sainsbury’s for their strenuous efforts to make this beautiful garden happen.”

The St Mary’s Garden of Remembrance, and the Mill Bay area, have a long history as recreational open spaces in Horsham, dating back nearly 100 years when Horsham’s first female councillor, Nellie Vest Laughton, created the Garden of Remembrance in memory of her husband and to commemorate the First World War, enabling it to become Horsham’s first ever park. In 2018, the gardens were restored and upgraded to ensure a quality that meets the expectations for a heritage site, such as this, so close to the centre of Horsham’s historic centre. A fine tribute to music lover

By Phil Dennett The latest Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra concert of the season was a great example of the way music can touch lives. As if Beethoven was not moving enough, there was another reason for it stirring the emotions. The concert at the Dome was sponsored in memory of Philip Wilford, a sponsor in recent years with his wife Jane of the Principal Flute. Philip died earlier this year, aged 67, after suffering from cancer for four years. He was a big fan of conductor-pianist Freddy Kempf and loved Beethoven. In his will he left £10,000 to the orchestra. Philip would have been delighted with the way Kempf and highly consistent orchestra evoked perfectly the sometimes dark but expressively beautiful Beethoven Third Piano concerto. Kempf was the cool captain of the keys at the eye of the storm in

the first movement, expressing energy seemingly effortlessly while easing into the more reflective moments. His opening of the slow movement was delightfully fragile yet confident, and the graceful lightness of the orchestra complemented the mood beautifully. There are so many delights in this work of light and shade and Kempf captured them all with a memorable performance that was matched note for note by the musicians. At times he played high notes with his right hand while bringing in the orchestra with his left, a little distracting at times but never detracting from the quality of the music. Dvorak’s deep and at times doomy Symphony Number 7 is probably his best musically, even though the 9th, or New World, Symphony is no doubt the most popular. There was there plenty of power from the brass in the restless allegro opening movement, alongside some attractive

woodwind playing. Gentle clarinet and bassoon paved the way for the strings to ease into the poco adagio, and the orchestra captured this movement’s contrast of the tranquil and feverish, with taut strings and ominously rumbling cello and bass. The strings and some timely trumpets added fire to the fervent and most exhilarating third movement, and the mood of defiance in the fourth was tangible. Indeed, Kempf infused the orchestra with his energy and enthusiasm when conducting the other two pieces away from the piano stool, including a sparkling Rossini Semiramide Overture. Jane Wilford said of her husband’s bequest: “We have both had so much pleasure from attending Brighton Philharmonic concerts over many years. Music was part of our life together and we are all very lucky in this town to have such a wonderfully enriching cultural scene, of which the Brighton Philharmonic is an integral part. Philip was very keen for the orchestra to go from strength to strength, and he left a bequest in his will to the Brighton Philharmonic Society of £10,000.” The Society said it was very grateful to Philip for the generous bequest, and to Jane who continues to sponsor the Principal Flute.

@Home win Best Estate & Lettings agency in West Sussex again!

@Home Estate Agents have been named as the best estate and lettings agency in West Sussex by the Best Estate Agent Guide for the second year running. And they’ve also bagged 8th place for the whole of the UK, which is the best in the South East region (excluding London)! @Home were also the only local company to be rated as Exceptional in both Estate Agency and

Lettings Agency services and were only one of 4 UK branches to be rated as Exceptional in all 3 judging areas. This builds on last year’s success when they came 28th in the UK as the best performing branch in West Sussex. The Best Estate Agent Guide is the most rigorous estate agency performance review undertaken, assessing over 25,000 estate and letting agency branches in the UK

using independent experts and scoring against a set of performance and customer service criteria. It marks the start of an exciting month for @Home as they are also the only UK based agency to be shortlisted for 3 categories in The Negotiator Awards. The Best Estate Agent Guide and Negotiator Awards really are the pinnacle of estate agency recognition and

have been described as ‘The Oscars’ of estate agency. Director Paul Davies says: “I’m absolutely thrilled with yet another recognition of how hard we work as a team and am thankful for our clients that support us. The team deserves the credit here and it’s hard to believe that in just 3 years of trading, the Best Estate Agent Guide has rated us each year as the best estate and lettings agency locally. We can add that to the British Property Awards rating us as the best in the Horsham District for 2 years running and All Agents recognising us as the best locally for 3 years running and the forthcoming Negotiator Awards shortlisting in 3 categories. As a team, we have a real passion for property and our expertise in online property marketing, coupled with sales excellence and a team that are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty has proved to be a winning formula and helped us grow into 2 branches in Southwater and Horsham. We do things differently and it’s nice to see that the overwhelming majority of our 5* reviews mention honesty, communication and trustworthiness as part of our strengths. Estate agency doesn’t always have the best reputation but were changing that 1 client at a time. @Home Estate and lettings

Horsham still awaiting the rub of the green

Photos by Clive Turner Saturday November 10 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1 3 Trojans Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter With Horsham still trying to find their feet this season they were unfortunate to come up against upper table opposition again last Saturday – not that there are too many easy games in this league. But, once again Horsham gave

a good account of themselves and had the hockey gods had been smiling, the result might have been different, witness a disallowed Horsham goal in each half. The game started with Southampton-based Trojans being awarded two short corners, interspersed with their opening goal. Horsham responded with forays and were rewarded with a short corner of their own, but Sean Pearcy fired wide. Trojans, though, had the bulk of possession and hit the post before Zak Chinn embarked

on a solo run and, despite being in a one on one situation, generously passed, but the recipient was off target. Joey Humphreys then ran the length of the field, earning a short corner, which Tim Upchurch crashed in to level the score. Just before the break, Nick Evans in the Horsham goal stopped a shot only for the ball to roll round him and trickle in the net for Horsham to trail 1-2 at the break, an earlier Horsham goal being deemed unacceptable. The second half began with an immediate Horsham attack, Toby Fraser being on hand to slot in, but again the goal did not stand. A Trojans breakthrough was blocked on the line by Evans before Humphreys smashed the ball past the visitors’ goal. A close range Trojans attempt was saved – and another Trojans short – but a superb Trojans goal promptly followed. Horsham kept pushing whenever opportunities presented themselves, Freddie Campbell having a shot blocked before Evans saved at full stretch and then kept another Trojans attack out with assistance from Peter Neave. The game ended with two Horsham shorts, current runners up Trojans winning 3-1, Team Manger Al Campbell telling the District Post: “That was a good game and at 1-1 it could have gone either way. The ball fell for them and not for us!” As soon as the game was over Nick Evans headed to Harrogate to join the England O50 squad. In a tightly placed mid and lower table few points separate the teams - although they have scored more goals than sixthin-the-table West Hampstead, Horsham are tenth, and on Saturday travel to Guildford to face the league leaders. Guildford have 33 goals to date this season, considerably more than any other club. Woking are eleventh with one point, while Slough are bottom, having lost all of their seven games.

Horsham hold Cambridge to a well-earned draw Saturday November 10 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Cambridge Ladies 2 2 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Prior to this encounter Cambridge had won four of their previous six games and only conceded five goals, so the 2-2 draw was a good result for Horsham as they make their way after promotion back into the National League. Cambridge went one up from a short corner after a quarter of an hour, but set piece specialist Naomi Kelly, formerly with Oxford, got the Horsham equaliser with a drag flick five minutes later – only for Cambridge to retake the lead from another short

before the break. The second session was also

We had lashing rain, thunder and lightning in the first half, but fortunately the conditions improved evenly matched, Gee Humphreys telling the District Post: “We had lashing rain, thunder and lightning in the first half, but fortunately the conditions improved after the interval, when Naomi converted another short corner and we successfully closed

the game down to give us the draw. We were very pleased with the result!” Horsham’s South African overseas player Isabella de Rocha added: “Cambridge are a good side! But, week by week we’re playing more together and we play better when we have a challenge – although we won last week at Southgate we weren’t really pushed, so we didn’t play as well as we did this week.” The ladies have another testing game on Saturday – against Norfolk’s Harleston Magpies – at Christ’s Hospital with a 2pm push back. Harleston are second, behind Hampstead & Westminster, while Horsham are currently seventh. Ipswich, yet to score a point, are cemented to the foot of the table, with just a single goal. Southgate are in the penultimate spot with one win to date.

Mancini Legal in Horsham Hockey sponsorship deal Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter The thriving Horsham Hockey Club is delighted to announce that they have signed a three year platinum sponsorship deal with Horsham based Mancini Legal, whose CEO Alessandro Mancini was born and bred in the town, attending Greenway School and Collyers, after which he launched his family law business. Commenting on the deal Alessandro Mancini says: “It’s brilliant to be working with the Horsham Community. Mancini Legal is getting great support and is developing positively after some really good clients have put their faith in us by using our extensive range of services. So, as a local family firm we want to give something back, and the great thing about hockey is that it’s played equally by men and women of all ages plus a huge number of colts. We

are impressed with the set up at Horsham Hockey Club and the number of teams and volunteers involved, and wish the team every luck for the next three seasons of our sponsorship.” Horsham Hockey’s Men’s First Team Manager Al Campbell tells the District Post: “It’s great that Alessandro played hockey at our local College of Richard Collyer and the club is thrilled to have Mancini Legal on board with main sponsorship rights on the Men’s First team shirts and subsidiary rights on the Ladies’ shirts. The club still has a similar platinum deal available for the Ladies – along with other sponsorship packages – further details are available at www.horshamhockeyclub.com Mancini Legal – 1st & 2nd Floor, 23 West Street Horsham RH12 1PB – www.mancinilegal.com – 01403 337337 / 330800 – info@mancinilegal.com

John Mickel famously wins unique fifth Legend’s title

YMCA top after 7 goal nail biter Saturday November 10 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 4 3 AFC Uckfield Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Motor Sport Martin Read - Sports Reporter Faygate racing driver John Mickel has just made history at an historic track – Brands Hatch, one of his favourite circuits. John went to Brands with a 670 points difference between his closest rival, Steve Whitelegg, and with 1200 points up for grabs over the weekend, both highly competitive drivers had everything to play for. But at the iconic venue’s Indy Circuit, John, at the wheel of his trademark orange KSeal sponsored 1934 Ford replica Legend, romped home with the crown with a day to spare. On the Saturday places in the day’s three heats were enough to give John an unassailable margin of 750 points, enabling him to have

a more relaxed day than anticipated on the Sunday, saying: “It was nice to have been able to wrap up the championship with a day to go, so we could race on Sunday without any pressure and go out there and have a play. When the championship is at stake you have to be conservative, go for the placings and keep the car on the track. We’ve been doing that since Donington really, playing the conservative game! First, to win you must finish – you can’t afford to have any DNFs – especially in Legends – and that’s probably been the difference for the other guys this year. Obviously, it’s absolutely fantastic to make it four titles in a row and to win my fifth Championship overall.” Commenting on John’s win, rival Steve Whitelegg said: “John has had as good a year

as he’s ever had – I just didn’t have quite the number of wins or podiums that I needed!” John Mickel is no stranger to silverware – the trophies he has won are threatening to take over his home, but the record breaking fifth Legends crown clearly means a lot to him and reflecting on his fantastic achievement, John quipped: “Until the will disappears, I fully intend to keep going … although I’m not getting any younger!” Many congratulations from the District Post sports team, who are already looking forward to John Mickel’s 2019 Legends season. Meanwhile, all of the very best of the action from Brands Hatch will be broadcast later this month on Amazon Prime, where the rest of this season’s Legends racing can also be watched.

Horsham Gymnasts impress again - at National event

Gymnastics Martin Read - Sports Reporter Four young athletes from the Horsham Gymnastics Centre travelled to Guildford Spectrum last weekend, competing as members of the South East Regional Level 3 and 4 teams in the National Voluntary Finals. They produced some highly encouraging results. Brooke Stocker,

Tabitha Lees, Georgia Stables and Arabella Aston all qualified from the Regional Championships in September and were competing against the best gymnasts in the country at their respective age group levels. Georgia and Arabella contested in the very strong Level 4 South East team helping to secure seventh place, their scores contributing towards the team total. It was Arabella’s first ever

National Final and Georgia’s combined compulsory and voluntary results enabled her to finish the year with a national ranking in the 22nd position. As anticipated, the competition in Level 3 was also challenging, but the South East team finished a highly creditable fourth. Brooke and Tabitha both did very well, Tabitha being placed eighth overall, including finishing 10th on the bars and eighth on the beam, Horsham Gymnastics Centre Artistic Coach Lisa Jestico telling the District Post: “The girls all produced great scores and what was especially pleasing was that their results showed improvement from their outstanding achievements at the Regional Championships, which led to their selection for the National event at Guildford. The girls are improving and progressing – after competing in both the compulsory and voluntary events at National level, Tabitha finished sixth in the whole of the country and Brook 18th, a fantastic way to finish a very busy competition season and we are all very proud of them!”

Perhaps YM were guilty of complacency when they suffered defeat in the previous Tuesday’s Parafix Sussex Senior Cup game against lowly Little Common, but, against Uckfield they came out with all guns blazing and were two goals up within six minutes. With YM looking confident against their mid table opponents surely it was game over? Not quite! In fact it was almost game over in Uckfield’s favour after they clawed their way into the lead, seriously worrying YM. This may not have been a game for purists, but it was entertaining throughout and home supporters were delighted to see YM battle back to take all three points to go top of the league after Chichester had come unstuck at Newhaven. With the Uckfield keeper well out of position, Tony Nwachukwu put YM ahead before spectators had settled into their seats. YM were pressing hard, Tony Garrod scoring the second goal, YM were dominating, earning four corners with Nwachukwu, Dean Bown and Jack Hartley all troubling Uckfield before Nwachukwu was body checked off the ball without sanction during a stoppage. Then, the game suddenly changed – Tom Gilbert hobbled off with a potentially serious knee injury and a good passing move in front of goal enabled Callum Smith to score. Worse immediately followed when a failed clearance let Uckfield in again, Gianfranco Mici finding the net. While YM had still had only 10 men on the pitch Uckfield had hit back with two well taken goals, the score remaining 2-2 at the

break. Uckfield are clearly a side to respect - in the cup the previous Saturday they were reduced to seven men for the last 20 minutes (resulting in four absentees in their line up at Gorings Mead), yet they had held out to win and were not about to give in against YM. Soon after the restart Aaron Jeal had to be at his best to pull off three saves in quick succession and then deflected a pile driver over the bar for a corner, another set piece following when Jeal somehow pushed the ball round the post. Nwachukwu, Bown and Garrod began to cause problems at the other end, but despite the linesman’s flag waving, Smith put Uckfield in front for the first time, and at 2-3 with Uckfield having two subsequent corners, YM were up against it. Garrod, though levelled the score before Ash Dugdale promptly headed in a cross from the right in the 75th minute. Two YM subs – Sam Schaaf and Luke Gedling - then had unfulfilled opportunities ahead of an Uckfield goal being disallowed just before scheduled full time. Uckfield had their fifth corner of the half but YM safely kept them at bay during the extensive jittery minutes of extra time, Assistant Manager Julian Miller exclaiming: “That was some game!” YM Coach Ben Godfrey then told the District Post: “After the first 40 minutes we were playing so well, but then we conceded two goals and in boxing terms we were on the ropes. But, we hung in and came out on top – uckfield will feel a bit hard done by, but that’s football!” YM now top the league with 33 points – two more than Chichester, with Newhaven third on 29. Eastbourne United remain bottom, below Loxwood. This Saturday YM travel to Arundel (16th) – not always a happy hunting ground - and then entertain Lancing (12th) on Tuesday 20th.

Saturday November 10 – Buildbase FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round Horsham 1 0 Potters Bar Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The game was preceded by two minutes Remembrance silence, honouring the fallen, especially recalling three Horsham players, all from the town, who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War One – Harold Agate, from Horsham’s well known corn & seed merchants’ family, James “Jimmy” Sturt, a Horsham goalkeeper (killed in France, as was his brother) and Herbert

Liley of Crawley Road, Roffey. Horsham teased their supporters into thinking that they would be heading off to Hertfordshire for a replay, but, with just two minutes of full time left, the single goal of the match gave the Hornets another celebrated cup win against a side from a higher league, earning £4,000 in the process. The game began with Horsham pressing Potters Bar Town, getting an early corner from Rob O’Toole’s foray before Chris Smith, Tyrell RichardsonBrown and Steve Metcalf were all denied, visiting keeper Berkely Laurencin engineering saves. Potters Bar did subsequently get more into the game, but with

neither side making a telling inroad, the first half ended goalless. The canny nature of proceedings carried on after the break, with it looking increasingly likely that the tie would be decided by a single goal, despite both sides creating chances their defences were successfully negating opportunities. With the final whistle beckoning, Dean Lovegrove strove to clinch it for Horsham, but, again, Laurencin could not be passed. Josh Pelling, too, had to be on his toes in the Horsham goal when a cannonball strike had to be pushed over the bar after Sandro Costa Dias Fernandes had unleashed a wayward

shot. But, finally, Smith brought the Hornets victory when he side- footed the decider from Richardson-Brown’s supply with Potters Bar’s defence in unaccustomed disarray, Horsham hitting them on the break. The visitor’s promptly responded but Pelling saw off Dias Fernandes’ last gasp strike. The win gave Horsham’s their seventh success from their last ten starts and they are rewarded with a mouth-watering, but stiff, home Third Qualifying Round tie – only the second time that Horsham have got that far in the last 40 years - against high flying Vanarama National League side Bath City. The sides’ first ever meeting will be on Sunday

November 25th at Culver Road, Lancing – the Hornets’ third tie against higher league opposition this season. Speaking after Horsham’s win, Manager Dom Di Paola said: “We didn’t really want to play another game – the replay – on Tuesday night, because we’ve been playing a lot of matches recently. We gambled at the end to see if we could get something and the effort, hard work and commitment is showing through with results – you have to take your hat off to them, they’re a great bunch of lads!” On Saturday Horsham welcome third-placed VCD Athletic for a league game.

Horsham swan through in the Sussex Senior Cup

Tuesday November 6 - Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Storrington 0 2 Horsham

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

At the Recreation Ground Horsham secured their entry into Round 3 of the Sussex Senior Cup with relative ease as befitted their position two leagues above the hosts, whom they last met in 1997, when the Hornets won 2-1. The scoreline might have been even more favourable to Horsham but for the intervention of Storrington’s woodwork and an impressive display from Gary Elliott, formerly a Hornet, but now Storrington’s keeper. Although Horsham had rung the changes, a strong line up was on duty and a goal in each half brought them victory. Soon after the start Charlie Harris, Jack Brivio, George Hayward and Tyrell Richardson-

Brown all launched attacks, but it was Chris Smith who scored in the 13th minute from an acute angle. Horsham might promptly have gone further ahead, but their corner was somehow scrambled away via the crossbar. The woodwork came to Storrington’s aid again – twice – thwarting Smith and Harris. Storrington did then get into Horsham’s half but without threatening and after an unfulfilled Hornets’ corner the score remained 1-0 in Horsham’s favour at the break. On the resumption Horsham kept pressing, but Elliott superbly palmed Harvey Sparks’ shot against the Storrington friendly bar. Then Brivio tested Elliott unsuccessfully, until, on 63 minutes, he did manage to get the

ball past the Swan’s outstanding keeper. With Horsham adhered to Storrington’s half, the post – arguably vying with Elliott for Storrington’s Man of the Match award – then came to their rescue yet again before Horsham had a goal disallowed, the game ending 2-0 to Horsham, who go through to the final 16 in Round 3 with a potentially demanding home tie against Eastbourne Borough – mid table in the Vanarama Conferennce South and a strong contender for the Sussex Senior Cup title. The tie will be played on or before December 5th. Historical note – Horsham have won the Sussex Senior Cup five times, lastly in 1976, although they did make the final 12 years ago, when they were bested by Lewes.
