Sadness as much loved family owned town restaurant closes News Martin Read - Reporter Sadly, Carmela – Horsham’s award winning fully licensed restaurant at the corner of Denne Road and East Street has been forced to close, because of the ill health of Francesco, the Director and chef responsible for the lovingly prepared mouthwatering Mediterranean creations with a Sicilian twist. When Rossella Raciti opened the restaurant with her brother Francesco nine years ago they described it as “a dream come true” and went on to refurbish the beautiful 16th century building, Francesco telling the District Post: “I have been in Horsham most of my adult life and wanted to bring something new and fresh to the town – something different and truly authentic, and to be able to fulfil customers’ special orders.” Carmela has enjoyed loyal support from its regulars who are all saddened by the loss of their favourite eatery, especially as independent family run restaurants are no longer common place. Rossella tells us: “Francesco worked so hard when we launched Car-

mela and specialised in preparing so many classic meat and fish dishes and vegetarian delights, including his home made pasta and wonderful pizzas. It has really broken our hearts to close the restaurant because we have put so much into it and I don’t like to see the building now. But, the good news is that our town centre deli in the Carfax is still very much open, so I look forward to seeing everyone there – to eat our continental specialities in house or for takeaways, you won’t find such a lovely display – including fine wines and cheeses - anywhere else in the town!” The last few weeks has been very difficult for the family, having to cancel the always popular Christmas bookings, but Rossella has worked tirelessly to ensure that all of the staff have been found jobs, adding: “I fell in love with Horsham on my first visit, it’s such a friendly town and it’s been a constant pleasure for us to welcome familiar faces and make new friends. We opened the delicatessen in response to public demand and we’re here to stay – so please come to see us, I promise that you won’t regret it – we only

Executive, West Sussex Music, explained: “Five years ago, West Sussex County Council took the bold step to embark on a project aimed at creating an independent, charitable organisation to continue the delivery of music education to the schools and children of West Sussex. Suffice to say, the initiative has been a great success and I am hugely proud of where we are today. “We have continued to nurture, inspire and enrich the lives of children though the transformational power of music, as well as expanding our range of specialist support for schools. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all those who have helped and supported us along the way.” The event also marked the beginning of a new strategic partnership between West Sussex Music and The College of Richard Collyer in Horsham, which has already resulted in a new venue for Horsham Music Centre and the West Sussex Youth Orchestras and Choirs, as well a new home for the administrative side of the charity itself. In addition, the move has facilitated two further key partnerships, with Horsham Symphony Orchestra and the National Children’s Orchestra, both of which are also now based at Collyer’s. Sally Bromley, Principal, The College of Richard Collyer, said: “When I heard the County Ensembles and Horsham Music Centre may be looking for a new home I immediately thought of Collyer’s. We’re perfectly located, had the requisite space, and a passion to promote music education and performance across all ages. Our partnership has proved really successful over the last few months. My staff are commenting on how lovely it is to hear the sound of instruments, from trumpet to timpani, practised across the campus after day time classes have ended.” West Sussex Music is the

largest provider of high-quality music education to children and young people in West Sussex, offering vocal projects, whole-class ensemble tuition, instrumental and vocal lessons, specialist advice and support for schools, as well as a comprehensive range of musical activities at its five Music Centres. Through its curriculum support, professional development opportunities and facilitating role, West Sussex Music builds music into the very fabric of school life; supporting schools and teachers to achieve the best possible outcomes for pupils, their families and the com-

For over 50 years, West Sussex Music has supported projects that enable access to cultural opportunities for disadvantaged and disaffected young people, through its strategic partnerships with other arts and cultural organisations, and it plays a valued role as the Music Education Hub for West Sussex. Councils sign deal to deliver economic growth for Horsham

Key sites in Horsham and the surrounding area are set to be transformed thanks to a new deal between West Sussex County Council and Horsham District Council. The Horsham District Growth Deal was signed by leaders of both councils and kick-starts a partnership that will deliver new homes, create jobs and boost economic prosperity in the area. By signing the deal, Louise Goldsmith, county council Leader, and Ray Dawe, Leader of Horsham District Council, have committed to a number of shared strategic growth priorities. Major projects outlined in the Deal include: West of Horsham and North Horsham Developments – deliver

housing and economic growth in these locations Horsham town centre – progress the delivery of a new Town Centre Vision that will promote and sustain the town centre and maximise investment opportunities Hurst Road – potential redevelopment of the site to deliver new housing and employment opportunities Former Novartis site – redevelop the site to provide high value employment opportunities. Louise Goldsmith said: “The Horsham District Growth Deal provides a real opportunity to work formally together on a range of ambitious plans for Horsham and the surrounding area. It means we can secure resources and investment to deliver much-needed im-

provements to local infrastructure including a new fire station and training centre. “I know from other District Deals that collaborative working with the district council and other partners creates an environment to boost the local economy, helping both local residents and businesses to not only prosper but also to benefit from the improvements planned. “The Horsham deal is the sixth one signed, and I am delighted to say West Sussex County Council now has deals in place with every district and borough council in the county. It puts a real focus on economic growth and development, countywide.” Ray Dawe said: “Horsham District Council is working to increase economic growth, maintain and create new local jobs and bring continued prosperity to the district and our residents. “The value of this District Deal is that we work in partnership with the county council to ensure we together focus strongly on agreed priority projects that will help us achieve our objectives.” Image: Vision for Blackhorse Way and walkway to The Forum, Horsham town centre For more information please see: https://www.westsussex.gov. uk/about-the-council/how-thecouncil-works/partnership-work/ working-with-district-andborough-councils-growth-deals/ horsham-growth-deal/

Local man’s 18 month challenge to save rhinos

A local man is taking on 20 Ultra, Mara and Rhinothons in 18 months, in aid of the charity ‘Save the Rhino’. Horsham resident, Chris Green, began the challenge in July and has, so far, run an impressive 200+ miles over 7 different events. Now he’s reaching out to fellow rhino fans for help in keeping up the momentum. Chris explained his reasons for wanting to protect rhinos: “I’ve loved them for as long as I can remember, so I struggle to get my head around how anyone could mean them harm. I’ve felt the Rhino love out there on the streets, and from the Marathon crowds when I have run by, dressed as a Rhino. So its all the more shocking to me that there

are others in this world who would see them murdered simply for their horns. “That twisted trade in rhino horn has pushed this magnificent species to the very brink of extinction. So heartbroken by their plight and inspired by the work of Save The Rhino”. In a bid to “stir up some animal love”, Chris ran around the North Downs dressed as Tarzan and he will, once again, be a Rhino for a day, as he takes on the London Marathon, next year, in full costume. Chris added: “So please, please can you lend your support to Rhinos and kindly sponsor me in this challenge? Save The Rhino are standing up against the illegal trade in rhino horn. Their con-

servation projects are many and far reaching, as they help local communities and rangers to guard against poaching. The Charity also funds direct Rhino care and are helping combat their habitat loss, so your donations will provide an invaluable contribution to programmes throughout Africa and Asia. “Protecting our animals for future generations is one of the greatest legacies we can leave behind, so lets join in the fight back for this awesome species. Everybody Loves Raymond!

Gifted artist Raymond Warren visited Collyer’s last week for a lively TV style Q&A with 50 students, focussing on his career journey, which gave a fascinating insight into his work in local government across the south east, and time spent in the United States helping with the Kohn Kerry presidential election campaign! Lucy Hargreaves, Collyer’s Employability Programme Coordinator, said: “It was so inspiring to hear about Raymond’s drive, determination and focus on what’s been important to him on his career path. “Our students really enjoyed the lively Q&A and loved hearing his witty anecdotes about working on the campaign trail. It was so kind of Raymond to give up so much of his valuable time to prepare for,

and take part in, today’s lively session.” Collyer’s Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, hosted the Q&A. He said: “Raymond’s energy and positivity is infectious; his journey from his east midlands upbringing, to working in government and US presidential political campaigns, to his life now as an artist of high renown, should be a movie!” Lucy Hargreaves added: “We were all truly inspired and everybody loved hearing Raymond’s story.” Raymond told the students: “I’ve been really impressed with your keenness and your questions; do listen to Lucy and Steve, as they really know what they are talking about. You are so lucky to have the chance to attend this outstanding college.”

Local young people to have their say on the future of youth services Horsham District Council, working in conjunction with West Sussex County Council’s Integrated Prevention and Early Help (IPEH) team, are encouraging local young people to take part in a public consultation to help shape youth support services across the Horsham District in the future. In order to gather opinions, a short online survey has been developed and targeted to teenagers and the under 25s. Commenting on the initiative, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, said: “We are keen to ensure that young people are fully consulted regarding these key services and are seeking their views to find out what their concerns are, what services are important to them and how they

would like to access these services going forward. “I would urge as many young people as possible to give us their views, or indeed for parents to share the survey as widely as possible online. “The results of this survey will help us ensure we are directing our support to the areas that will have the most impact on the lives of local young people.” The survey will be live during November 2018 and can be found here: https://haveyoursay.westsussex.gov.uk/ipeh/horsham-hubadvice-and-support-for-youngpeople Information about the survey will also be sent to local youth groups, schools and colleges.

Bake-off raises funds for Stroke Association Colleagues at West Sussex marketing agency PMW Communications got creative in the kitchen to cook up some imaginative treats for a fundraising bake-off. A sparkly unicorn cake, delicately-iced cupcakes, luscious lemon drizzles and a rich cappuccino cake were among the entries brought to the bake-off table at the company’s Billingshurst office. The winners were B2B PR director Harriette Conroy’s Victoria sponge with fresh strawberries, which triumphed in the ‘best tasting’ category, and copywriter Juliet West’s chocolate heart cake with fudge icing, which was judged the ‘best looking’ cake. Account management director Mary Logan, who judged the competition, praised the efforts of everyone involved, and said it had been tough to judge because every entry had its merits. After the judging, colleagues paid a minimum £1 donation for a slice of cake, and a mouth-watering grand total of £160 was raised for the Stroke Association.

The bake-off was organised by PMW copywriter Kate Clifford and her daughter Grace. Kate said: “My dad suffered a stroke, eight years ago, which left him unable to walk or talk. The charity provided invaluable help in supporting both my mum and dad during those years. The bake-

off seemed a great way of raising money for the charity, while also having a lot of fun, not to mention a table full of treats to enjoy at work throughout the day. “I’m so grateful to PMW for agreeing to host the fundraiser. We were hoping to raise £100, so £160 is just brilliant.”

Remember someone special with local churches Tree of Light services

The local community will be coming together to remember loved ones at Horsham and Billingshurst Tree of Light services on Sunday 2 and Sunday 9 December*. The services will include Christmas carols and readings, and have been jointly organised by local charity, St Catherine’s Hospice, with local churches. The Tree of Light offers bereaved family and friends an opportunity to reflect on the year that’s passed, and honour someone special by dedicating a star in their memory, and offering a donation to the hospice. By dedicating a star, you’re not only remembering the person you love, you’re also helping other people’s loved ones. Your donations allow St Catherine’s to provide expert care to more local people and give more people the chance to spend treasured time

with family and friends. Last year, St Catherine’s cared for around 2,100 people with eight in 10 people looked after in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes, including across Horsham and Billingshurst. Rev Lisa Rainier, Spiritual Care Lead for St Catherine’s, said: “The death of someone close is one of life’s hardest experiences and Christmas can be an especially difficult and poignant time of year. Traditionally, Christmas is a time to be with family and friends, so Tree of Light is a great way to remind those who are bereaved in our local community that there are others who understand their feelings of loss. In fact, many people tell me after attending a Tree of Light service they feel more able to appreciate and engage with the spirit of the festive season.”

If you can’t attend the Horsham or Billingshurst Tree of Light services, there are other services taking place across Sussex and Surrey. For full details, please visit: www.stch.org.uk/treeoflight All donations from the service will help St Catherine’s continue to support local terminally ill people, and their family and friends in your community. Currently, St Catherine’s can only provide end of life care to one in three local people who need it. With your support, the local hospice wants to be there for everyone when life comes full circle. Please consider supporting St Catherine’s with a donation - www.stch.org.uk *Two Horsham Tree of Light services takes place on Sunday 2 December at: Trafalgar Road Baptist Church, 80 Trafalgar Road, Horsham, RH12 2QL at 6.30pm St Margaret’s Church, Church Street, Warnham, Horsham, RH12 3QW at 6.30pm A Billingshurst Tree of Light service takes place on Sunday 2 December at: Trinity United Reformed Church, High Street, Billingshurst, RH14 9LG at 5.30pm Another Horsham Tree of Light service takes place in Horsham on the following Sunday (9 December) at: St Mark’s Church, Saint Mark’s Lane, Horsham, RH12 5PU at 6pm. Music for All charity gets Chairman’s support Horsham District Council’s Chairman, Cllr Peter Burgess, visited the Music for All charity, based in Barttelot Road, Horsham last week (week commencing 12 November). Music for All is a UK-wide charity with the aim of bringing the world of music-making to as many people as possible. The charity gives grants to individuals and community projects, to enable them to buy musical instruments and lessons. Commenting on the charity, Cllr Burgess said: “There are many people who want to play music, but not all are in a position to buy instruments or have lessons, which are both expensive. “This charity is completely run by a small team of volunteers and all monies raised go straight into the community, giving the opportunity to many local people to benefit from the amazing effects of music.” For more details visit www. musicforall.org.uk

Collecting the Quintessential Work of Samuel Prout

In less than two years, the Friends of Horsham Museum and Art Gallery have created an art collection that the town and district can be proud of. This month-long exhibition, Collecting the Quintessential, will run from tomorrow (24 November) until 30 December. Having elected to prioritise the

quality of the acquired work over the cache of a celebrity name, the Friends have acquired a broad selection of high quality and beautiful work by a range of artists, both well-known and local. This remarkable collection tells the story of a quintessentially British art form, the watercolour. The impact of the creation of the

watercolour collection has been considerable; without it we would not have had the recent Royal Academy based exhibition WatercolouRA250, nor the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours show. Both attracted new visitors to the Causeway based museum and art gallery. The exhibition will include the unveiling of a specially commissioned watercolour by award winning artist Gordon Rushmer, called Horsham Museum & Art Gallery 125, to celebrate the popular museum’s 125th birthday this year. This modern work will be in contrast to watercolours from the very birth of the medium, including a painting by George Robinson of Warnham Pond bridge painted in 1768, purchased with funds from The Art Fund. Alongside that will be paintings by the architectural artist par excellence, Samuel Prout, whose views of Europe transformed the visual appreciation of Medieval buildings, and the historical scene paintings by Charles Cattermole, whose work influenced many a children’s history book. Equally, by going for quality, the museum has bought works by obscure artists. None more so than Vanda Szczepanowska, whose intricate detailing of fabric and domestic interior is matched by the delicate beauty of the face, yet her work is hardly known. The collection has also benefited from donations by The Horsham Society, Toovey’s, the Washington based auction house and long term supporter of the Museum, and private individual benefactors. The exhibition, Collecting the Quintessential, showcases what can be achieved with limited means, but with driving ambition, to create a collection Horsham can take pride in and enable the district’s museum to develop interesting exhibitions and events. Do children get too much homework? - More than one in ten primary school children spend five hours or more on homework each week. - Two in five primary school parents believe their children are under too much pressure to perform. - Only marginally more secondary school pupils are stressed by exams, according to parents. More than one in ten primary school children are spending over five hours on homework each week, according to a study looking into the pressure pupils are put under during their school years. Research by home education provider Oxford Home Schooling reveals that even primary school children are being strained by the prospect of their aca-

demic performance. The study reveals that, alongside a third (33%) of parents saying their child feels stressed by exams, two in five parents (40%) of pupils aged between five and 11 feel there is too much pressure on their children to perform well in them. The figure is particularly concerning when compared to secondary school pupils, whose exam stress levels have been widely reported on recently, with the revised GCSE system. The research showed that 37% feel stressed about exams, while 46% of their parents feel they are too pressured - only slightly higher than much younger children. Homework is also a cause for concern, with a quarter (25%) of parents of all ages of school children believing that too much homework is set for them. In fact, 13% of primary school pupils spend five hours or more on homework a week, compared to 39% of those at secondary school and more than half (55%) of sixth form or college students. Between the ages of five and 16, children will sit four rounds of compulsory exams, not including the 11+ and Common Entrance exams that those applying for grammar or private schools

will take. Primary school pupils take Key Stage 1 and 2 exams for English, Maths and Science, while some GCSE pupils can sit down to as many as 25 individual tests. Dr Nick Smith, Principal at Oxford Home Schooling, said: “It will be a shock to some to find out that almost as many primary school children are stressed by homework and exams as secondary school pupils. Although school is a place for learning, in primary education it’s just as important to allow children to feel comfortable, so that they can learn more efficiently and effectively. “At five years old, children in the UK start school a year earlier than in most other European countries - two years earlier for those in Northern Ireland. They’ll spend around 10,500 hours of their lives in school before they’re 16 years old. “The classroom itself can be a stressful setting for many, and that can stick with children for a long time. So it’s very important for parents and teachers to recognise when a child is stressed and find alternative ways of helping them cope. Home schooling can be one of the most effective ways of doing this.” For advice on how to approach exams for parents and home schooling tutors, visit https:// www.oxfordhomeschooling.co.uk/ blog/preparing-home-schooledchildren-exams/

Local children lay stone poppies in memory of the fallen Shelley School Primary School in Broadbridge Heath took time to commemorate Remembrance Day by visiting the village’s war memorial and laying hand painted stones. Following the school’s remembrance service, parents, teachers and children walked to the memorial where the curate of St John’s Church, Kate Bailey offered a prayer and some words for the hope of future peace. Each pupil in Year 5 and 6 had spent time decorating a stone with an image of a poppy and some had written the names of men from the village

who had died in world war. This has particular significance for the Broadbridge Heath area, since many of the roads in the new Wickhurst Green estate are named after casualties of the conflicts. Headteacher Mrs Kirsty Fitzscott commented: “The importance of remembering those who lost their lives in conflicts past, and in thanking those who, in the present, put their lives on the line for the benefit of others, cannot be underestimated. We are always keen that pupils learn from history, both global and local to us here in Broadbridge Heath.”

Mr Fry said: “it was amazing to see the whole school community come to a stop at 11 o’clock, as the bugler played and a minutes silence was held. It was emotional and fitting, given the sacrifices made.”

Council helps first time young authors to get published with stories about Horsham Katie Wells with the 2 winners

Two talented local children were announced as winners of a Horsham District Council story writing competition this week. Inspired by the BBC 500 word children’s story competition, Horsham District Council launched its own children’s story writing competition back in the summer, challenging local children to write a short story about Horsham Town Centre and Hor-

sham Park, involving the Townies and Parkies animal characters which are captured on new wall murals in the town’s Albion Way. The winner of the 5-9 years category was Conor Winspear aged 8 with his story ‘Badger’s Bumblebee Birthday Cake’. The winner of the 10-13 years category was Nyah Hawkes aged 13 with her story ‘The Circus Comes to Town’. The winners have had their stories made into a book which has been illustrated by local artist Katie Wells, who created the original animal characters which have become well known to children through a number of recent town and park trails. Each winner will also receive a framed original illustration from their story in the book. A limited number of the books will be available to buy from Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, Horsham Library and the Horsham branch of Waterstones. Profits from the sale of the books will be donated to local children’s charities - Chestnut Tree House, Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity and The Springboard Project. If you would like a signed copy of the book please come along to the Waterstones store in Horsham on Saturday 24 November from 9.30am to 10.30am. Commenting on the achievements of all the young authors

who took part in the competition Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “We are really delighted that the two winners of our story writing completion are being recognised in this way. It is a massive achievement to have a book published at such a young age. “Many congratulations to both the winners and runners up for their inspiring stories which really brought the animal characters to life and highlighted our town centre and park so well. “The writing competition and children’s trails have been a real success in terms of bringing our town and park to life for people, inspiring young minds and raising money for local charities – so a win, win all round.” Fresh panels featuring new characters have now been installed in the Albion Way underpass to reflect the winter. Do check them out if you are walking between the town and the park. These activities promoting Horsham Town Centre and Horsham Park were organised by Horsham District Council with Horsham town’s branch of Waterstones, Maverick Publishing and West Sussex Library Service. Other judging partners included local authors, Gobsmack Comics, My Fair Kind Child, Cocoa Loco and Katie Wells Illustration.

St Catherine’s Hospice Launches the 5 Peaks Challenge If you are an adventure lover who enjoys breath-taking landscapes and being part of an inspiring team, then St Catherine’s Hospice 5 Peaks Challenge is for you! The local hospice is delighted to launch their very first UK trek, which will take place in the Lake District next summer. Running from Friday 21 June to Sunday 23 June 2019, trekkers will tackle five of the Lake Districts most demanding mountain peaks, including the highest - Scafell Pike. The setting for the trek will offer trekkers a unique opportunity to take in the Lake District’s stunning views, while challenging themselves to an experience like no other. Intrepid trekkers will spend Saturday completing the challenge. The route begins by heading across the moorland towards the first peak of the day: Allen Crags. After a short pit stop, the next challenge, Great End, beckons. Next it is on to the highlight of the day, the craggy peak of Scafell itself. Finally, the return route will take trekkers over the iconic peaks of Esk Pike and Bowfell before descending back down into the Langdale valley. In the evening, trekkers will celebrate with a meal and certificate presentation. The rest of the time will be an opportunity for preparation and much needed rest and recuperation, as well as a chance to get to know fellow trekkers. Accommodation will be at the

Hawkshead YHA, where guests will have the opportunity to stay in a range of exciting accommodation, including tipis, camping pods, and cabins. On the Sunday afternoon, challengers can either head home or take part in an activity, on or close to Lake Windermere – the largest lake in the UK. This unique trip is the perfect chance to tick something off your

bucket list and make new friends, while raising money to help local terminally ill people, and their families, when life comes full circle. Your £750 in sponsorship, which includes a non-refundable deposit of £50, will ensure that St Catherine’s is able to reach the two in three people that they are currently unable to support at the end of their life. Throughout this experience, St

Catherine’s will be with you every step of the way, to support you with your fundraising and training, and will host regular events before your trip so you can meet and get to know other trekkers. Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “We’re thrilled to launch our first UK trek. It’s the perfect opportunity for anyone who is looking for a challenge a little closer to home,

to join us in a breath-taking region of the UK. We can currently only care for one in three local people, but, with your help, we can reach everyone who needs us. I can’t wait to create an ultimate trekking team for St Catherine’s!” Ready to take on the challenge? To find out more or to sign up, please contact Michaela Clements on 01293 583063 or email: events@stch.org.uk.

Do you hate to sell? This month our Award Winning Business expert, Janette Whitney gives advice on how to sell painlessly

janette whitney Business Consultant www.whitneyassocs.co.uk

Do you love your business but hate the selling part? Whether it’s calling prospective clients on the phone or writing persuasive emails and web copy, many small businesses say that selling is the element of their business they dislike the most. You’ve probably already tried some solutions to your distaste of selling. e.g.: Try to push through the dislike. Deny that you hate to sell. Use carrots and sticks to get yourself to pick up the phone or send an email. Take classes, read books, or watch videos on how to sell. Each of those methods can work for a while. But trying harder to use tactics that you aren’t happy with at the outset will produce more unhappy results. There has to be a better way! These 3 tried and tested approaches work wonders. 1. Change the people you sell to. Your target market should consist of people you enjoy

spending time with, and whose problems and goals you care about. If you quit your job at a law firm (for example) because you didn’t like working with litigation attorneys, they should not be the clients you are now pursuing for your business. When you sell to people you like to hang around with, sales conversations can become easy and natural. Choose

Use carrots and sticks to get yourself to pick up the phone or send an email. a niche that will feed your spirit, not just your bank account. 2. Build your connections and credibility. When prospective clients already know who you are, you rarely have to “sell” at all. Prospects who are referred to you by a mutual connection are often convinced of your value before they contact you. Public speaking can turn audience members into ready buyers before they leave the room. 3. Focus on service instead

of selling. As a small business, what you excel at is serving your clients. This is your comfort zone as well as the area where you shine. Start treating prospects like you do clients from the first moment they contact you. Offer them information and advice that allow them to experience what it would be like to work with you. When a prospect is already getting value from you, moving the relationship to a paid status can be a smooth transition. A Japanese Restaurant Could be on its way

A planning application has been received by Horsham Council in relation to the former Horsham matters shop in East Street being converted into a restaurant. The plans also show that the basement floor part of the building could be converted in to function rooms and a music venue, a source close to The District Post says a jazz bar is

looking likely. Penciled in with the name ‘Minami-za’ it would be following in the footsteps of former Japanese restaurant Wabi which closed earlier this year. Tipped to be a contemporary venue with a deli counter we wait to see what Oriental surprises East Street may bring us in the future.

Carols & Capers: Maddy Prior with The Carnival Band promise some festive fun at The Capitol Queen of folk singer, Maddy Prior, joins up once again with the Carnival Band during the Festive Season for their unique celebratory show “Carols & Capers”. Together they mix renaissance, modern and ethnic instruments with a refreshing cavalier attitude, and plenty of humour, putting their inimitable stamps on a range of familiar and notso-familiar festive fare. Tossed together in 1984 on a ‘let’s see what we come up with’ basis for a Yuletide Radio 2 broadcast, what began as a one-off session in a village hall in Cumbria has endured for over twenty years and has become something of a tradition in its own right. Fortunately, it shows little danger of fossilization as both parties keep coming up with new ideas. The 2001 collaboration and fifth album, of “Gold, Frankincense and

Myrrh” introduced a good deal of Arabic and African-influenced music into the equation. The next project explored the lives of eighteenth century female soldiers and the ballads they inspired. Of all the festive traditions, few have stood the test of time better than the Christmas carol. Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band know this more than most, having been inspired by the music of Christmas for the past twenty-five years. Now and for the first time, the very best of these have been

Celebrate this Christmas with the sights, sounds and smells of mediaeval yuletide feast

Mediaeval Feasts has teamed up with the award winning Garlic Wood Events Chefs to create an authentic Mediaeval Banquet overflowing with the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas, for an experience never to be forgotten. Designed to amaze and entertain, mediaeval feasts played an important part in the tapestry of mediaeval life. And, brought to you by the organisers of the Loxwood Joust, on the 14th and 15th December, Horsham’s Drill Hall will become a candlelit feasting chamber, overflowing with the sights, sound and smells of a 15th-century yuletide dinner. Fully costumed waiting staff will be in attendance to serve the authentic 4-course meal, and the hosts of Christmas past Lord and Lady Misrule, will provide their legendary insight and revelry on the evenings events as they introduce each of the 4 courses, act as toastmasters and compare

the period party games that take place between the courses. Then after all have eaten their fill, guests are encouraged to brush off their dancing shoes, dance to the live music and enjoy the chance to learn some mediaeval court dances. Food may not be the first thing you think of when you think of mediaeval life, but unbeknown to many, the food was rich and flavoursome with probably more spices used in cookery then, than there are today. However, all participants are asked to remember the good manners as taught by Erasmus of Rotterdam in 1530 and know that “to swallow whole pieces of food in one gulp is the practice of storks and clowns!“ The exceptional menu will bring to life the fabulous rich flavours of mediaeval England. Using the very best locally sourced ingredients from some of Sussex’ finest producers, Garlic Wood Events have created a menu to tempt,

tease and indulge as they recreate the sumptuous game pies, Sussex chutneys, oxon stews and winter fruit crumbles with spiced syrups that feature in the mouth-watering Christmas menu. A vegetarian option is also available. Toby Harmer Head Chef at Garlic Wood events said “Garlic Wood Events are thrilled to be involved with the Medieval Banquets this December, which promise to be a feast of both fine food and entertainment! We have prepared a four course menu that is in keeping with the food of the period and the main challenge for us is to create a menu that utilizes only the available foods of the time, whilst cooking a great tasting menu! Fortunately, food in medieval times was far more advanced than people think, with meats, herbs, fruits and spices being widely used. We will be using Longhorn beef from the Knepp Wild-Range Estate, incredible pies from Sussex based Al the Pieman and locally grown vegetables and fruits.” And to quench your thirst, as the festive revelries immerse you in merriment, you will find a bar serving a wide selection of period and modern drinks including the ‘Nectar of the Gods’. Created from fermented honey and swathed in myth and legend, this smooth wine, better known as mead, was thought by many to be an elixir of health, fertility and longevity. Each guest will receive a free glass of mead or a glass of wine on arrival and costumes are encouraged! To purchase your tickets for this mediaeval feast and entertainment, please go to www.legendpresents.co.uk.

Space and light makes a world of difference

As the clocks change and evenings draw in, it’s more important than ever to make the most of natural daylight. At Abingworth Meadows in Thakeham, the new homes have been designed to do just that. Sebastian Kemp, director of award-winning housebuilder, Oakford Homes, said, “Natural light is important all year round but we tend to notice it more at this time of year. Each of the

houses at Abingworth Meadows has been designed with large windows and extensive glazing to make the most of every drop of sunshine, and we’ve also incorporated large double-opening doors which open out to the gardens. They’re fantastic in summer for indoor/outdoor living but they make a real difference at this time of year by letting in plenty of light while you can stay warm and dry inside.” Oakford Homes has also care-

fully considered the layout of the homes to ensure that each room allows for easy, comfortable living with plenty of space for furnishings with elbow room to spare. Specification and finish is of an equally high standard, regardless of the size of each home. “Along with space within the homes, all our research has shown that people prefer well-planned schemes with lots of open space and plenty of

landscaping for a great environment in which to live,” added Sebastian. “Abingworth Meadows is really beginning to take shape and we not only have a large pond with a central fountain, there are lots of sports and village amenities as well as a cricket pitch, so there’s immediately a feeling of space. We’re delighted at how well the landscaping and layout is progressing and now that we have lots of new owners moved in, we very much hope that they are enjoying the environment here too.” Currently available are substantial three bedroom homes priced from £419,950, four bedroom homes from £539.950 and five bedroom homes from £785,000. The government’s Help to Buy scheme is also available and for those with a property to sell before buying at Abingworth Meadows, the Part Exchange and Oakmove schemes offer assistance to help get you moving quickly. To discover the complete suite of properties available at Abingworth Meadows, and to view their collection of impressive new show homes, call in to the sales and marketing centre which is open every day between 10am and 5pm, or simply contact the sales team on 01798 813071 or by email thakeham@henryadams.co.uk.

Atlantis Swimmers at the 61st ESSA (English Schools Swimming Association) National Relay Finals

The 61st finals of the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) National Relay Championships took place at the iconic London Aquatic Centre on Saturday 17th November 2018 and Atlantis Swimmers, representing their local secondary schools, were once again part of the action. A total of 416 Secondary Schools from 8 regions across the country

had participated in County and Regional qualifying rounds, with the fastest 30 teams making it through to 4x50m Freestyle Relay and 4x50m Medley Relay Finals in junior, intermediate and senior age group categories, swimming 2,307 relays in total! The Sussex round of the SouthEast heats took place in October, at the Pavillons in the Park, where

the Atlantis swimmers had secured their schools a ticket to London! The world class facilities at the Olympic venue provided the perfect setting for the competition and the teams were eager to challenge reigning champions and leading sport’s schools; Millfield and Mount Kelly. By the end of the heats, the 30 schools were reduced to the top 10 finalists in each age

Horsham Lions Swimarathon 2019 Over the last 7 years, the Swimarathon has raised over £50,000 for Horsham Lions Club, which has been donated to the following charities:South East Lions Air Ambulance Night Flying Appeal Equipping the “Soft Play Area and part of The “Sensory Room” at The Horsham Springboard Project Centre Purchasing portable defibrillators for the 3 local secondary schools plus the QE II school for children with disabilities Providing equipment for The Butterfly Project and The Hop Skip and Jump Centre to help support local children and young adults with learning difficulties. Providing equipment for Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice In 2019, we are supporting Jigsaw Trust which supports children and adults with autisim. The aims of Jigsaw Trust are to improve the lives of those affected by an autism spectrum disorder and to promote a greater knowledge and understanding of autism. Founded on the principle of excellence through continual learning, the Trust aspires to provide the highest quality of education and lifelong learning possible. Set up in 1999 by a group of local parents of children with autism, Jigsaw CABAS School now provides specialist education for 65 children aged 4-19 years. A separate Life Skills Centre has been established in Guildford which provides a home environment for students to increase their levels of independence by learning and practicing essential life skills. Jigsaw Plus, established in 2012, has recently opened its new Centre for Lifelong Learning where it provides support for 31 adults with autism aged 18+, developing their

independence and essential life skills. Additionally, the Trust has been operating a number of Social Enterprises; including, GARDENworks, ARTWorks and Cafe on the Park. Cafe on the Park provides a unique environment in which Jigsaw Plus adult learners can undertake a wide variety of work experience tasks within a safe and supportive environment. Jigsaw relies on the fundraising efforts and support of the local community to ensure that they can provide the best resources and learning opportunities for their pupils and adult learners. As Jigsaw is continually expanding, the school is now in need of a new early years play area for the younger pupils to enjoy during their break times. The funds raised from the 2019 Swimarathon will help Jigsaw to provide a fun and safe play area to help their pupils explore and develop their motor skills, imagination, balance and sensory stimulation through play. This is essential for all children to develop and understand their surroundings. In addition the staff and students at the school need new laptop computers and iPpads as they are crucial to record behavioural information and regularly update individual progress for the students. The cost of this equipment is not covered by local authority grants. Horsham Lions Club wish to help the play area development and the provision of new IT Equipment, by donating its share of monies raised from the 2019 Swimarathon, including tax recovered under Gift Aid. The club is pleased to announce that the 2019 event has a sponsor, P T C Systems, a nationwide company that specialise in IT technology. We formerly welcome on board

P T C Systems The Swimarathon is run on a 50/50 basis. Half of the money a team raises by sponsorship will benefit a good cause of their choice, this can be their favourite charity, their club or maybe their school. The majority of the other half will benefit Jigsaw Trust, with a smaller percentage being reserved for other good causes in the Horsham area, which are regularly supported by Horsham Lions Club. Teams can also join Horsham Lions in supporting the Jigsaw Trust Taking part is very easy; there is no entry fee. You will need a team of up to six swimmers, plus an adult non-swimming team captain. All ages can take part from 8 to 70 inclusive. The first member of a team swims one length of the pool and then rests while the other members of the team take turns to swim a length of 25 metres. The first swimmer then swims again, and so on, for 55 minutes. We can accommodate up to 8 teams swimming each hour. The first teams start swimming at 1pm, with other teams starting - on the hour - until 5pm, when the last teams start their swim. Enter your team today by emailing Lion David Trowbridge at david@trowbridge.me.uk for an Entry Form and Information Pack. Alternatively you may visit Horsham Lions Website: www. horshamlions.freeuk.com. WHY NOT ASK YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILIES OR COLLEAGUES TO HAVE A GO? IT’S GREAT FUN, HEALTHY EXERCISE AND ABOVE ALL YOU WILL BE SUPPORTING YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY. category for each event. Debuting at the finals were the Millais Junior Girls; Sophie Rodwell and Sofia Velasco, and Crawley SC teammates. In the 4 x50 Freestyle heats, the team delivered a gutsy performance to finish in 29th position. The Forest School Junior Boys; Oliver Columbo, Bruno Haskell, Archie Ruggiero and Will Weeden, pushed themselves hard in the 4x50 Medley heats. With a particularly outstanding 50m fly performance from Oliver Columbo of 30.5 secs, they finished in 27th place. In the 4x50 Freestyle heats, the boys swam nearly 5 seconds faster than their qualifying time to finish in an impressive 15th position overall. Millais Intermediate Girls; Emma Harrison, Jessica Glassford, Anna Templar and Millie Weeden swam nearly 4 seconds faster than their qualifying time in the 4x50 Freestyle heats. An exceptional 50 Free time of 27.92 from Jessica Glassford placed them straight through to the final 10 in 6th position. In a nail-biting final, they put up a thrilling performance moving up 10 places to finish in a brilliant 6th overall in the country! A great achievement! There were some standout performances in the 4x50m Medley

heats from Emma Harrison with a 50m fly time of 31.20 secs and Glassford with a 28.18 Freetime, the standard of competition so high however, the girls narrowly missed out on a final top 10 position by .09 hundredths of a second, to come a fantastic 11th in the country nonetheless! Reigate Grammar Intermediate Girls, saw Issy Hayes and her team put in a steely performance to finish 8th in the 4x50 freestyle final, and 24th in the 4x50m Medley. In the Senior Girls Category, Gabby Eltham and the Hurstpierpoint team came 23rd in the 4x50 Freestyle and 28th in the 4x50 Medley. Millfield Senior Boys team with Hamish Milne-Skillman, put in a first-rate performance in the 4x50 Medley final to clinch the silver, losing out to close rivals Mount Kelly! Becky Harrison, Regional Atlantis Coach, said of the day; “This year’s performance at the ESSA National Relays was the best in Millais’s recent history, 6th in the country what an achievement! Very proud of both the teams for qualifying and hopefully we’ll see the girls in the junior and inter teams back next year fighting for a place in the final!”

Horsham in seventh heaven !

Photos by Clive Turner Saturday November 10 – RFU Intermediate Cup Round Two Hammersmith & Fulham 21 53 Horsham Saturday November 17 – London 2 South East – Horsham 48 14 Dover Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Over the previous two Saturdays rampant Horsham delivered two more impressive victories - against strong opposition, extending their winning run to seven matches. the equivalent London North West 2 League with a fourth half century score of the season. Horsham signified their intentions with an early Will Johnson try in the corner, converted by his brother, Tom. Although Hammersmith responded, Joe Wilde went through to add another maximised try to give Horsham a 14-0 lead after 15 minutes, but the host’s perseverance soon paid off with a converted try of their own. Then, a Tom Johnson penalty ahead of a try from a trademark long Declan Nwachukwu run, again kicked over by Johnson, gave Horsham a 17 point advantage at the half hour mark. Even more competitive rugby ensued, culminating with a second Hammersmith try, which, with the suc-

cessful kick left the score 24-14 at the end of the extended first half. After the break Hammersmith penetrated the Green and White defence, worryingly reducing the deficit to just three points, but that was their last success and Horsham’s interception allowed Jordan Smith to cross the line, Johnson’s boot adding comfort, soon enhanced by another converted Wilde try and Nwachukwu’s second. Over 20 minutes remained but Horsham were in command, emphasised by Wilde’s hat trick and the game was successfully closed down after a Johnson penalty, Horsham triumphing 53-21, Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “We were well in control for a long time, then a little bit of arrogance got to us and we let Hammersmith back in, but we picked up with more tries.” Horsham are rewarded with an away Quarter Final against Old Colfeians – currently 6th in Horsham’s league – on February 2nd. The home league match against Dover – who were 4th in the table on arrival - was played in wintry conditions, but Horsham warmed their supporters with another telling exhibition of running rugby. Again they took an early lead, this time with a Marcus Condon try converted by Johnson, who added a penalty after pressure from the visitors. Nwachukwu then bewitched Dover defenders with a jinking run to put Horsham 17-0 up with Johnson’s assistance. Aaron Linfield subsequently touched down in the corner, followed by Johnson’s unerring accuracy, repeated with a fifth successful kick after Nwachukwu broke through again. Dover replied with two converted tries, but that was to be their last entry on the scoreboard, Horsham leading 31-14 at the break. A Johnson penalty, followed by tries from Michael Tredgett and Vince Everitt, both converted, the former skipper’s impeccable display of kicking contributing majorly in Horsham’s 48-14 win, Head Coach Nick Stocker commenting: “Our strong first half performance was backed up by a mature, controlled second half, which saw Dover’s attempts at a comeback fizzle out – we caused them trouble all afternoon.” Horsham, now second, are back in action with an away trip to 7th- placed Haywards Heath on Saturday December 1.

Billingshurst’s Scott Stratton thrilled with England selection

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Evergreen Billingshurst cricketer Scott Stratton has been selected by England in the 16 man squad for the inaugural Over-50s Cricket World Cup being played in Australia at the end of this month and the beginning of December. The England team will play their counterparts from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Wales in the 50 over tournament, with the sides playing each other once in a round-robin league, the top four in the table going through to the semi finals. Right hand bat Scott was picked after playing in trial games early last season and because of his consistent performances during the 2018 O50s County Championship, and, just before setting off for the trip, he told the District Post: “I’m really, really pleased ! I’ve been on many tours in England – sometimes three a year – and I’ve played in China and in Barcelona, too, but, although I’ve been to Australia before I haven’t played there until

now.” The squad includes Scott’s Sussex O50 teammate Jason Robinson of Preston Nomads – and Essex’s Mel Hussain, brother of the former England Captain. The tournament is being played on top grounds used for Sheffield Shield Grade cricket, including the Bradman Oval at Bowral and the Alan Border and Manly Ovals, Scott continuing: “I know Jason and have met the others at the trials and county matches. The pitches will be a bit bouncier than the UK’s and I’m sure we’ll come up against some nagging medium pacers and a few wily old spinners!” Scott Stratton was Horsham Captain for three seasons from 2001-2003, during which the club won the league in his first season, and he handed over the reins after a hat trick of Sussex Cup titles, following which the then Chairman of Selectors, Paul Baker said: “He’s been the most successful captain the club’s had in my memory. It was a difficult job when he took over - they were a young and immature side. I think he’s handled them exceptionally well both on and off the field and gained the respect of all of the players and members at the club, and he’s made match-winning contributions with the bat.” On transferring from Horsham, Scott captained Billingshurst and the club enthused about his selection: “We are delighted that Scott will be heading down under to represent England – congratulations on your call up, Scotty – what an achievement!” Scott summed up saying: “I was put on standby for the tour three months ago and am thrilled that it has come to fruition. It’ll be a proud moment to put on the three lions sweater and what makes me particularly happy is to join my dad in gaining England colours – he played football for Fulham and Colchester and was an England amateur international, scoring a goal for Woking in the FA Amateur Cup Final in front of a full house at Wembley.” Reg Stratton also scored for Fulham against Liverpool and was a keen cricketer, too.

Cup and League joy for high flying YMCA Tuesday November 13 – Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup – Round 3 Lingfield 1 3 Horsham YMCA Saturday November 17 - Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division – Arundel 2 5 Horsham YMCA

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA reached the semi-final of the Peter Bentley Cup for the second season running, winning a difficult away tie at Lingfield’s Pavilion Ground. After creating early chances, Lingfield went ahead on quarter of an hour, Connor Wilford intercepting a YM pass to score with a low strike. However, YM began fashioning opportunities of their own and on 32 minutes

Dean Carden’s cross was pounced upon by Alex Barbary who slotted home from close range to level the score. Three minutes later Barbary cut into the penalty area but his shot was well saved by the Lingfield keeper. YM kept pressing up to the break but were unable to add to their goal tally. The second half opened with Lingfield pushing for the lead, Aaron Jeal brilliantly stopping a header. Galvanised, YM hit Lingfield with a series of dangerous counter attacks and after Barbary was felled play was allowed to continue, Jack Hartley picking up the loose ball to put YM into the lead. Then, concerted runs caused the home defence problems and on 84 minutes a cross from the right was headed home by Sam Schaaf to put YM 3-1 in front. Schaaf then went through

again, but his shot went just wide. The last action was a desperate scramble in the six yard box, YM doing everything but score, Dave Brown’s shots hitting the Lingfield post. This well-deserved victory was thanks to standout performances by Barbary, Carden and Gedling, progressing YM to the Semi Final, and was Manager Peter Buckland’s first match after recent ill-health, understandably pleased, he told the District Post: “This was always going to be difficult. Lingfield are worthy opponents and with the number of injuries we currently have it is pleasing to see how well our squad worked tonight. We now look forward to a semi-final tie against Uckfield, which will not be easy!” That match will be played at a neutral venue in February/March. Visits to Arundel’s pleasant Mill

Road ground have not always been a happy experience for YM, but they won convincingly to remain top of the table, two points clear of Chichester City and four ahead of Newhaven. Early goals from Tony Garrod and Dan Mobsby got YM off to a flying start, all the more impressive because, beset by injuries, YM were obliged to play in a different formation, with half a dozen players sidelined, Dave Brown, Tom Gilbert and Luke Donaldson all nursing potentially long term difficulties. Arundel clawed back a goal to leave them trailing 1-2 at the break, but, within a minute of the restart Dean Bown restored YM’s two goal cushion, Garrod subsequently adding his second before Jack Hartley put the result beyond doubt with YM’s fifth. A second half goal had given Arundel some

respectability, but it was unquestionably YM’s day, Keith Holmes telling the District Post: “This was a solid performance against a team that has caused problems for YM in the past. Our quickfire opening tested the home defence and once the early breakthrough came we were able to capitalise before Arundel’s best spell saw them back in the contest in the first half. But, our strike immediately after the resumption helped YM settle into a pattern and establish a commanding lead, which held firm despite some late Arundel resistance.” After Tuesday night’s game at Gorings Mead against Lancing, YM entertain 15th in the table Little Common on Saturday, hoping to avenge the unexpected defeat by the visitors in the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup earlier this month.

Horsham Ladies secure determined draw Saturday November 17 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham 2 2 Harleston Magpies Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies again demonstrated that they are more than capable of competing with upper table teams when they held Norfolk’s Harleston Magpies to a draw at Christ’s Hospital last Saturday. Attacking straight from the whistle, Horsham started with a bang, taking the lead in the opening minute, when a strike from a short corner was parried for Laura Collins to score on the rebound. Another short was forced after 10 minutes, but, when the Magpies broke away to gain a short corner of their own, Horsham keeper Hannah Jackson kicked clear. With the Magpies coming more into the game, a strong strike was a close call. Horsham, though, with most of the possession were giving as good as they got and Elle Blakesley worried the opposition with a powerful shot that was scrambled away. Then, five minutes before the break, a Magpies foray was initially saved, but in the ensuing goal mouth melee the ball went in, appeals for foot intervention going unheeded, leaving the score

one apiece at the break. In the second half neither side created many clear cut chances, but a Magpies hit was swatted away by Hannah Jackson before Horsham fired wide from a short corner. Horsham specialist flicker Naomi Kelly then took a blow from a stick, leaving her with a sizeable egg on her arm, before she was hit on flush on the eye by the ball with spectacular bruising. On the resumption the Magpies had a short corner, which was well saved, but not completely cleared, hesitation on the ball enabling the Magpies to blast home, taking the lead for the first time. But, with six minutes remaining, Horsham promptly restored parity with a Shiv Male goal, and successfully closed the game down for a draw. Team Manager Jane Denman said: “We were amazing in the first 15 minutes. OK, perhaps the draw was a fair result, but we could have won that!” Captain Hannah Jackson added: “Yes, although a draw might have been a reasonable result, we want to win! Our second goal was what we aim to do – score with a good team goal.” On Saturday in their last league game until February, the Ladies – now 7th - travel to Suffolk to take on struggling Ipswich, who have lost all eight of their games to date, scoring a solitary goal while shipping in 35.

Guildford make hay while the sun shines Saturday November 17 – Hockey - South League – Premier – Division 2 Guildford Men’s 1st XI 8 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter World War Two pilots were warned about the enemy attacking with the sun behind them – and, last Saturday, that danger re-emerged on Guildford’s pitch at Broadwater School, Godalming. With Guildford heading the table and Horsham struggling it was always likely to be a tough encounter, yet, initially Horsham called the shots, Team Manager Al Campbell telling the District Post: “We bossed the game for the first 25 minutes, playing exhibition hockey, passing the ball well and having 70% of possession. Guildford are a well-drilled class act, training twice a week with their sights set firmly on promotion, yet we created all of the early chances, but they absorbed the pressure and it became apparent that the first team to blink and make a mistake was going to suffer. We blinked! A pass was intercepted and, as clinical as their position suggests, Guildford drove forward to beat Nick Evans in our goal, who hadn’t really touched the ball until then.

Five minutes later a hit and hope shot benefited from a last moment deflection to leave us trailing two nil at the break.” Horsham, though, rightly felt that they were still in the game – until they realised that the blinding super trouper like sun was aimed straight into the eyes of Evans and the defence, making the ball extremely hard to detect. And, Al Campbell continued: “Suddenly, from being in contention we were on the receiving end of a relentless barrage, fuelled by Guildford’s 16 man squad, whose fresh legs overran our 13 man contingent, with two short corner successes and four flamboyant field goals. We don’t want to make lame excuses, but as soon as the sun sank lower we came back into the game, returning to classy hockey, during which Sean Pearcy scored his eighth goal of the season.” On Saturday Horsham, now tenth, are at Christ’s Hospital for an 11.30 pushback against penultimate club Woking, who have one draw and seven defeats to date, Al Campbell quipping: “Last week was the only time on a hockey pitch when I wished the ground would open up and swallow me – it was so painful after our excellent start. This Saturday the boys have requested light drizzle!”

Horsham Lawn Tennis Club offers half price membership!

Tennis Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Horsham Lawn Tennis Club is celebrating a great year with a very special Black Friday deal on membership, but be quick – see below! Glyn Jukes, Head Coach at the Cricketfield Road club tells the District Post: “We’ve had a fantastic year at Horsham LTC with a number of exciting developments - the membership

base has risen by 20%, largely due to the success of our open days. The Great British Tennis Weekend although being extremely wet generated a lot of new joiners and the most pleasing thing about the increase is that the majority of new members are playing regular tennis and are split evenly across our categories. Players have really enjoyed the refurbished grass courts – many thanks to the Horsham Sports Club ground staff – and the excellent courts have been well used, with new and long standing members delighting in playing on some of the last remaining “lawn” surfaces in the area, getting a real Wimbledon feel to their games!” The coaching team has attended a variety of courses, resulting in the LTC having officials fully qualified in the provision of cardio tennis - and disabled tennis, which encompasses tennis for the blind, deaf, wheelchair users and those with a mental disability, and the club are aiming to roll out new specialist programmes using these qualifications within the next 4 to 6 months. Glyn Jukes continued: “The coaching team have been delighted with the success of the juniors this year with a double promotion for the Men’s 4th team (made up of junior players in our programme) and the inclusion of junior players in the

Men’s first team, which also had a winter promotion and the Men’s 3rd team who enjoyed a summer promotion. But the success doesn’t stop there: 14 year Old Zach Hodges won both this year’s Junior and Men’s Singles trophies in the club tournament, beating a number of team players en route before facing Tony Brent in the final. The level of tennis across the tournament was fantastic and it was great to see so many new members competing and supporting the players on Finals Day. Also, huge congratulations to Mars Schellevis who won all 3 trophies on offer in the ladies singles, doubles and mixed categories with partners Tessa Walder and myself, respectively.” Rightly, Horsham LTC are extremely proud of their achievements and, by way of celebration, for the first time they are offering a 50% discount on membership PURCHASED BETWEEN THURSDAY 22nd and THURSDAY 29th November under their introductory Black Friday offer. There will also be Membership and Coaching deals for those looking for original early Christmas presents. For more information please email admin@horshamsportsclub.com, typing ‘Black Friday Deals’ in the subject line – but, BE QUICK – THIS TERRIFIC OFFER EXPIRES VERY SOON!

Cottesmore scramble raises £1,100 for Poppy Appeal

Golf Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Cottesmore Golf Club swung into action with another of their outstanding fund raising days, turning out in force to raise money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in the very special 100 year

anniversary of the signing of the armistice at the end of World War One, organiser Alex Henderson – former Veterans Section Captain - telling the District Post: “We had 29 teams of three participating – all having great fun while raising £1,100. The day didn’t

start too promisingly – we had heavy rain, preventing the use of buggies. But, after a few sunny intervals we all really enjoyed ourselves, playing in a Texas Scramble team competition.” In a Texas Scramble each member of a team tees off, with one of the drives used for the next shot, each member playing a second shot from where the chosen drive came to rest. Then subsequent shots are played on a better ball basis until the ball is holed, the attraction being that inexperienced or rusty golfers can join in without too much embarrassment, the format ensuring that all participants are able to be fully involved. Alex Henderson added: “The Poppy Appeal Day is an annual event, all three Cottesmore Golf Sections coming together. The club is indebted to Paddy Dowzer, our President – he happily went about organising the clubhouse for the event while I was out on the golf course. Our winners were: Ladies’ Team – Brenda Williams, Catherine Malins and Ruth Leatherbarrow with a net score of 68.3, Mixed Team – Jenny and Paul Dixon and Liz Baguley (65), while the overall winners were Mick Stacey, Terry Vanhinsberg and Donald Day, who came home with 59.3”.

Dynamic Horsham gun down VCD Athletic

Saturday November 17 – The Bostik League – South East Division Horsham 4 0 VCD Athletic Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Once again Horsham confirmed that they are more than capable of beating testing opposition, this time by demolishing VCD Athletic – third in the table coming into this game - with

a clean sheet win, the fifth time in the last six outings that Horsham have prevented the opposition from scoring. Horsham started as they meant to proceed, with two early goals, two more second half successes sealing the comprehensive win – the Hornets’ fourth consecutive victory leaving them 7th in the table and unbeaten in their last eight games. Yet, VCD had a chance to open the scoring, but fired wide, only for Chris

Smith to slot home Jack Brivio’s pass to give Horsham the lead after five minutes. And, it soon got even better when Rob O’Toole converted Tyrell RichardsonBrown’s cross before Smith missed scoring the Hornets’ third. VCD’s Ali Fuseni then had two opportunities, but was thwarted by Horsham keeper Josh Pelling, the half ending with the Hornets enjoying a two goal cushion after further late possibilities went begging. The Kentish visitors – whose team had begun life as the now defunct Vickers Armaments factory works side – came out fighting on the restart. They had scored 12 goals in their last two games and posed an early second half threat, but were negated by the Hornets’ defence and further frustrated when in the 60th minute O’Toole put the result beyond doubt by burying the ball in the net. VCD boiled over, earning a red card for felling O’Toole ahead of Hornets’ sub Will Hoare firing straight at Mant in the VCD goal. But, eight minutes from full time, the keeper was unable to stop Hoare from scoring Horsham’s fourth. In the dying minutes Mant did prevent Richardson-Brown from inflicting additional embarrassment, just before the woodwork kept out a Harvey Sparks cannonball. This crushing defeat was ideal preparation for Horsham’s tough FA Trophy tie against Bath City at Lancing this Sunday, thrilling supporters and daring them to dream of cup progress against opposition from two leagues above. The Hornets have already despatched senior clubs this season and with the team in fine form a mouth-watering game is in prospect. Meanwhile, Cray Wanderers top the league, shading Hastings United by 7 points. Herne Bay are in the penultimate spot ahead of Thamesmead Town, who are in administration.

Heath cane Hassocks with six of the best ! Saturday November 10 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 6 0 Hassocks Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In one of their last matches at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre before moving to their adjacent new ground, Heath thrilled their supporters with a 6-0 thrashing of lowly Hassocks to move up to sixth in the table. Injuries deprived Heath of the services of Devon Fender and Charlie Leach, but the changed line up proved very effective, Heath beginning strongly with Hassocks keeper Toby Fisher having to be at his best to save a Max Howell strike. At the other end Kieron Thorp in the home goal denied what turned out to be a very rare attack from the visitors, ahead of Ollie Moore giving Heath the lead from close range. Then, in the 24th minute, Lee Carney’s header from a well taken set piece was pushed out and Ollie Moore crashed in his second from

the rebound. Skipper Tom Bold subsequently put George Cousins through for Heath’s third, soon followed by their fourth, Bold himself striking in a winner just before the break, with Hassocks being indebted to Fisher for preventing further damage. Resuming, Heath made it clear that, despite being four goals to the good they wanted more, and, 10 minutes into the half Howell converted Tim Rivers’ supply to compound Hassocks’ misery. Fisher made further saves, but Hassocks’ porous defence allowed Dean Wright in and he made no mistake, Assistant Manager Sam Chapman saying: “We hope to keep this style of play going in a tricky looking match at Shoreham (which Heath went on to win 1-0 last Saturday) and, judging by this performance, we have a good platform on which to build the future at our new home, which we expect to be ready soon.” The defeat leaves Hassocks uncomfortably poised above the relegation zone, but they are 7 points clear of penultimate club Loxwood and 10 above Eastbourne United

The Moore family triumph at Cheltenham Horse Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter Jockey Jamie Moore from his father Gary’s Cisswood Yard at Plummers Plain, just outside Horsham, pulled off a dramatic win on the free running Baron Alco in the prestigious BetVictor Gold Cup, the day’s centrepiece, in glorious weather at iconic Cheltenham’s Prestbury Park racecourse last Saturday. In a field of 18 quality runners Baron Alco escaped the attention of all of the pundits except Sir AP McCoy, but stormed home up the testing Cheltenham hill, seeing off a late challenge from Briony Frost on Frodon after making

the early running and holding on to a clear lead from before the half way mark. Perhaps unbeknown to Jamie Moore, chaos was unfolding behind him with horses falling from the first fence, only five others finishing. Seven year old Baron Alco, though, jumped impeccably despite having only raced once – five weeks ago - since sustaining a serious injury at the Cheltenham Festival in March last year. There had been mixed fortunes for the Moore family prior to the big race: Jamie had been meant to ride Moore trained Benatar and his brother Josh was listed to ride Baron Alco, but a fall denied Josh the opportunity

and when Benatar was declared a non runner Jamie switched to the winner, Josh generously saying: “I’d have been sick for

He’s not very big, only a pony. Dad has done a brilliant job, Jamie if he hadn’t ridden Baron Alco!” Jamie described Baron Alco as a horse he really likes, going on to add: ”He’s not very big, only a pony. Dad has done a brilliant job,“ while Gary said: ”I

feel sorry for Josh – I nearly took Baron Alco out because I thought the ground was too quick for him, but the owners persuaded me to run him, and luckily they talked more sense than me! It’s a testament to the horse and everyone at home who has worked on getting him back – the owners were patient and let me get him right. The horse is all heart and he and Jamie are made for each other.” The outstanding Moore family racing dynasty has immense pedigree, Jamie’s grandfather Charlie trained around 500 winners at his Brighton stables, while father Gary was a tough jump jockey before getting a licence to train at Cisswood.

Elder brother Ryan has been a serial winner of the flat racing championship, winning a host of classics, including the 1000 and 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, the King George V1, the Ascot Gold Cup, the Prix du Jockey-Club in Paris and numerous top races around the world. While, brother Josh is an experienced rider, too - good enough to beat AP McCoy at Fontwell. Jamie has won, among other races, the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the Scottish and Welsh Nationals and the Tingle Creek. Sister Hayley was a jockey, too, and, for good measure, Jamie’s mother Jayne and aunt Candy have also ridden winners.
