The newest brewery in town is one year old and, to celebrate, they’re hosting a party with live music, great food, and, most importantly, exceptional locally brewed beer. Katharine and Michael, owners and brewers of the cycling branded beer, have also brewed up a new birthday beer in collaboration with Chimney Fire Coffee that you can sample at the party. This new Coffee Brown Ale, aptly named ‘Col Beans’ after high mountain passes loved by cyclists, is infused with Ethiopian coffee from Chimney Fire Coffee. The coffee has notes of Jasmine, Apricot and Honey and these flavours enhance the ale’s well rounded malt character. The brewery’s inaugural year has been full of discovery, learning and meeting some fantastic and interesting people who might not all be cyclists, but certainly all love good beer. Katharine reflected on the year: “Mostly we’ve loved producing beers that people are now really enjoying”. When asked about their new birthday beer she said: “it’s absolutely delicious, we’re really proud of this one. It’s been great to partner with Chimney Fire Coffee to make a beer that’s a bit different and special”. The party is tonight,

7-11pm, at Chapeau Brewing Taproom, Unit 8 Redkiln Close, Horsham RH13 5QL. There’ll be live music, the Allez Nutrition food van offering hot food and pastries, and, of course, the launch of their birthday beer. They’re looking forward to seeing many familiar faces who have supported them through their first year and also welcoming new visitors to the brewery. If you can’t make the party, head to www.chapeaubrewing. com for details of when the taproom is open and also their special Christmas Opening Hours. You can also follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @chapeaubrewing.

The parents of thousands of children in Crawley missing out on their free flu vaccine are being urged to get their child protected now, reducing the risk of them becoming seriously ill and infecting their wider family. Flu symptoms come on very quickly and can be a very unpleasant illness in children, with symptoms including fever, stuffy nose dry cough, sore throat, aching muscles and joints and extreme tiredness, which can often last several days. Children can face serious complications from flu, including a painful ear infection, acute bronchitis and pneumonia, so some may even need hospital treatment. Last year saw three under 18 year olds ending up in hospital in Crawley due to flu, costing the NHS more than a £11,300, which may have been avoided by claiming their free flu vaccine. Those who get the flu will get better more quickly if they: Get plenty of rest and sleep; Make sure they keep warm; Take paracetamol or ibuprofen; Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

A pharmacist can help with flu, offering treatment advice and recommend flu remedies, and give guidance on giving medicines to children. More information about spotting symptoms and treating flu is available online at www.nhs. uk. Dr Laura Hill, Clinical Chair for Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We are urging parents of young children to protect them from the flu virus by getting them vaccinated now. “The children’s flu vaccine nasal spray is safe and tailored each year to specific flu viruses – so please claim this free NHS offer and please remember to sign and return vaccine permission forms if sent by your children’s schools.” Children need to be vaccinated even if they had the flu vaccination last year. The vaccine is available free on the NHS for eligible children, including: children aged 2 and 3 on August 31 2018 at GPs; children in reception class and school years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 at school; children aged 2 to 17 with long-term health conditions at GPs.

Horsham resident’s horse riding wish comes true for her 100th birthday

A resident at a care home in Horsham took the reins when she celebrated her 100th birthday with a horse ride. Birthday celebrations were in full swing when resident Audrey Merry celebrated her 100th birthday with family and residents at Skylark House care home, on St Mark’s Lane, and was surprised with a trip to the stables to ride a horse. Audrey, a keen fitness fanatic, turned 100 years ‘young’ in October, and was delighted to have her dream come true when the Care UK team and her family revealed they had arranged a horse riding lesson for her. The lesson had been arranged following a wish Audrey made on the home’s Wishing Tree to ‘ride a horse again for the first time in 60 years’. Revealing the secret to living to 100, Audrey said: “The key to living a long, happy life is keeping fit with interesting activities. I’ve loved to exercise for as long as I can remember. As a child I even used to row across the Thames to get to school - I took one oar and my twin sister took the other, while our older sister was coxen. “We became so good at rowing we were invited to join the school team. Horse riding with my twin sister was another passion of mine – I had no fear when it came to sports, and I’ll try anything!” Audrey was joined by friends and family, including her daughter who now lives in Canada, for the special riding session. Devendra Lallchand, home manager at Skylark House, said: “We always like to make an occasion of birthdays, and Audrey’s 100th birthday is noexception. She has had a lifelong passion for

sports, which she continues to pursue. She’s always first in line to take part in the activities the team provides for residents. “When we discovered Audrey wished to go horse riding again, we worked with her family to make her wish come true and ensure it was a birthday to remember. It was wonderful to see Audrey back in the saddle, she was an incredible confident rider and happily chatted as she rode around the paddock. “We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone at the Horsham and Mid Sussex Equestrian Academy for helping make Audrey’s birthday extra special.” Audrey Merry was born on 10 October 1918. During her childhood, Audrey lived in Waltonon-Thames and took part in many sporting activities, including horse riding, swimming and rowing. She also used to spend her time helping out in her mother’s dress shop. During the war, Audrey spent

five years working for the fire service in Littlehampton. She met her husband, Fred, and they were married in 1946. They had three children together, Jenny, Rod, and Mark. Audrey enjoys spending her time socialising with her family and friends at Skylark House, and keeping fit by going for long walks in the garden. She particularly enjoys walking along the riverside near the home to admire the nature and wildlife. Audrey moved into Skylark House in June 2018. Skylark House has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as shortterm respite and palliative care. For more information on Skylark House please call customer relations manager Beverly Jordan on 01403 887 578 or email beverly. jordan@careuk.com.

Collyer’s students lead the way!

Students and teachers from Collyer’s were treated to a once in a life time experience when they took part in the 2018 Leadership Symposium, sponsored by charities Working Options in Education and Grocery Aid. Top CEOs, entrepreneurs, and leading personalities, came together to offer motivational talks and question panels in a high level business symposium held at the Rothamsted Research Centre, Harpenden. Presenters on the day included: Dave Lewis (CEO of Tesco), Debbie Robinson (MD of Spar), Christine Tacon (Groceries Code Adjudicator); Kris Gibbon-Walsh (Head of Network of FareShare UK), Andrew Hawes (Founder of Newton), Rob

Kelly (Founder – Thrive Programme), Douglas Lamont (CEO of Innocent Drinks) and television personality Piers Morgan (who appeared via a pre-recorded interview). The event was expertly facilitated by Sky News presenters Jeremy Thompson and Anna Botting. Lucy Hargreaves, Employability programme Co-ordinator at Collyer’s, who organised the trip was thrilled: “This kind of access to top-level business people is such a privilege. The kind donation of thousands of pounds worth of tickets for this event made this a wonderful opportunity for our students! “We work very closely with Working Options in Education, who

have run numerous workshops with Collyer’s, and we are incredibly grateful to them for their generosity. They are an amazing organisation.” The students learnt about the inspiring stories and leadership philosophies of these captains of industry, who also generously took time to chat and offer best advice to students in networking sessions, which took place during breaks between the main presentations. Deputy Principal Steve Martell, who teaches the highly regarded Employability Programme at Collyer’s, was delighted: “I am incredibly proud of our students, who made a very positive impression indeed. They bravely asked questions, networked intelligently and really impressed some of our country’s very top business people. They really were a credit to Collyer’s and West Sussex.” Director of HE and Progression at Collyer’s, Ian McAlister, said: “Huge thanks to Lucy Hargreaves, as without her, this incredible trip would not have been possible. We also owe a massive debt of thanks to the amazing Lauren Monk and the team at Working Options for their superb support of our Employability work here at Collyer’s. “The speakers today were truly inspiring and on our students talked about them throughout our long journey back to Horsham!” Photo: Kris Gibbon Walsh (Head of Network of FareShare UK, centre) kindly took time out to speak to Collyer’s students and teachers during the event. West Sussex teenagers join House of Commons debate

Youth Parliament members from West Sussex put their skills to the ultimate test in a lively House of Commons debate. Chaired by the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon John Bercow MP, the four West Sussex teenagers took part in the annual event for UK Parliament Week. Oliver Faragher (East Arun, Adur and Worthing), Erin Masterson (Horsham and Mid Sussex), Farah Khan (Crawley and East Grinstead) and Harley Collins (Chichester and West Arun, pictured from L to R), helped debate five issues chosen in a huge ballot

by young people from across the UK earlier this year, called Make Your Mark. Erin said: “Going to the House of Commons was so surreal. I had seen it all on TV before, so to actually be there, sitting on the green seats was very bizarre! “The speeches were all amazing, and although I didn’t get to speak myself, I still got so much from the experience. It was extremely inspiring and eye opening. Now I feel as if I can do anything I set my mind to.” All the 11-18 year old UK Youth Parliament members involved in

the event, on November 7, 2018, then voted to decide which two issues would become their priority campaigns for next year. Paul Marshall, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “It is wonderful that young people from this county were at the heart of this debate and represented their peers so well in a hugely successful day.” In one of the largest youth consultations of its kind in UK history, this year’s Make Your Mark campaign saw 1,106,788 young people take part – with one in five of all 11-18 year olds voting. In West Sussex, a record 21,206 young people voted in the ballot, eclipsing last year’s by more than 6,000. The top five UK issues debated were: put an end to knife crime; mental health; equal pay, equal work; tackling homelessness; votes at 16. Put an end to knife crime and votes at 16 won the vote and will be the chosen campaigns for UK Youth Parliament members to tackle in 2019. West Sussex has four Youth Parliament members and four deputy members representing each area of the county, following elections in March 2018. MP helps cub scouts earn their Hamster ‘thrown out like rubbish’ lucky to be alive UK Parliament Week badges with their MP in UK Parliament Week has earned them a new woven badge to add to their uniforms. UK Parliament Week promotes the engagement of young people with the work of Parliament and the values of living in a democratic society. Over 7,000 events

It was such a pleasure to meet the Pulborough area cub scouts and their leaders Arundel & South Downs MP, Nick Herbert, visited the Pulborough area cub scouts on Friday to discuss his role as their MP and to explain how Parliament works as part of UK Parliament Week (12 – 18 November). Group Scout Leader, Lucinda Barton, invited Nick to St Mary’s School in Pulborough, to speak to three of the area’s cub packs from Bury, Pulborough and West Chiltington. The children took part in a quiz, testing their knowledge about the Houses of Parliament, before meeting their

MP and asking him questions about his work. Mr Herbert talked to the cub scouts about his role as an MP and went on to explain how new laws are passed. The cubs enthusiastically debated the merits of a fictional ban on chocolate and fizzy drinks, as an example of law-making. They were also keen to hear about Nick’s work with homeless charities, and have offered to support him at a future event to raise awareness of the issue. The cub scouts’ engagement

took place in schools and clubs last week. This year marked 100 years since the 1918 Representation of People Act. Lucinda Barton tweeted: “Thanks to @nickherbertmp – new politicians up and coming here at Pulborough Scouts!” Mr Herbert said: “It was such a pleasure to meet the Pulborough area cub scouts and their leaders. I enjoyed talking to them and was delighted to answer their many questions. I am very pleased to have helped them to earn their new badges.”

A little hamster is ‘lucky to be alive’ after being thrown away like rubbish. The tiny brown and white rodent was found shut inside a cage and wrapped in a black bag dumped in a local car park. A man found the little critter early in the morning on Saturday (17 November) and alerted the RSPCA. Animal collection officer (ACO) Julie Parsons went to collect her from Granary Way in Horsham. She said: “This poor little hamster was still in her cage and had simply been wrapped up in a bag and cast aside like rubbish, without a second thought. “It’s sad to think she could have been out in the cold all night and he/she must have been terrified. She is lucky to be alive.” Fortunately, little Cecilia was physically okay and a kind local took her inside to keep her warm until ACO Parsons arrived.

“It’s just not acceptable to dump a vulnerable little animal like this, especially when the winter weather has arrived and the temperature is plummeting at night,” added officer Parsons, “We understand that sometimes a pet owner’s circumstances may change and they may not be able to keep their pet anymore, but, in these circumstances, we’d urge them to ask for help and never just abandon their pet.” Anyone with information about where Cecilia has come from can contact the RSPCA’s appeal line on 0300 123 8018. Cecilia is now being cared for by staff and volunteers at RSPCA Brighton. If she is not claimed then she will be looking for a new home. If you’d like to offer a hamster a home, please visit: www.rspca.org. uk/findapet. For more information about looking after hamsters, please visit the RSPCA’s hamster care pages online.

Forest boys return to celebrate their success The Forest School welcomed back old faces last week, as the ‘Class of 2018’ returned for the annual Awards Evening celebration. Joining them was Guest of Honour, Siobhan Denning, who was Headteacher from April 2007 until summer this year. Chair of Governors, Cliff Purvis, congratulated the young men on their outstanding achievements and offered them some words of wisdom as they move on to the next stage of their education and careers. Parents, staff, Governors and friends were there to celebrate the GCSE success of all the boys, and to see trophies and prizes awarded to those who had attained particular achievements across the curriculum, as well as community, and special whole school awards. Highlights of the evening included the maximum of 4 awards being presented to Joshua Martin,

Murphy Arliss and Linden Graves, and 3 awards going to Douglas Moore-Loizides, Josh Cooper and Thomas Clark. Thomas was also presented with The University of Brighton Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement for his superb exam results. Mr Gareth Good, Senior Assistant Headteacher, said: “Every year we have a high number of boys who achieve exceptional GCSE and higher level exam results, but Thomas truly deserved this accolade achieving 5 of the new top grade 9s and 5 other grades at 8 or A.” The Awards Evening also recognises those pupils who make exceptional progress, and the Frank Newby Award for outstanding progress went to Piran Shoebridge. Headteacher Mr Straw said of the evening: “It was a lovely, joyous event. I was so proud; it is such a special occasion where the school community can celebrate every

student’s achievements. “These young men will always be Forest boys; we wish all of them the very best for their futures.”

Celebrity Artists Judge School Photo Competition

Two well-known British artists were judges of an annual photography competition at Christ’s Hospital School, which took place earlier this month. For this year’s Tony Ray-Jones Photography Competition, now in its tenth year, the guest judges were renowned, contemporary artists Georgie Hopton and Gary Hume. This year’s theme was ‘Colour’ and organisers received a record 170 entries. After much deliberation, the judges eventually decided

upon the following winners: Junior: Isabella, Year 9; Intermediate: Candice, Year 10; Senior: Geanie, Year 13; Best in Show: Ife, Year 10. On receiving their prizes, each of the photographers commented on the thinking behind their images. Paul Deller, Head of Art at Christ’s Hospital, said: “The standard of the images was better than ever; whilst all representational, the images had an abstract, mysterious quality with allusions to potential narratives. Our judges had a very difficult time in making their

selection.” Following the prize giving, in which the winners received signed monographs of the artists, Georgie and Gary talked about the development of their careers and some of the meanings and reasoning behind their art. “It was a truly enlightening discussion, the artists spoke with honesty and genuine insight, whilst senior Art students asked many questions” said Paul. Georgie Hopton is a British visual artist who has had numerous gallery and museum exhibitions. Gary Hume is a contemporary English artist best known for his stylized depictions of everyday objects using high-gloss industrial paint. He came into prominence during the early 1990s as a member of the Young British Artists, alongside Damien Hirst. The competition was named in honour of well-known British photographer, Tony Ray-Jones, who had a huge influence on the development of British documentary art photography and was educated at Christ’s Hospital. Three local charities make D.W. Nye’s shortlist for funding

Three charities are hoping to be the recipients of £500 after being shortlisted in the latest round of D.W. Nye’s Proud to be Local campaign. After receiving nominations for causes across the county, the builders’ merchant, which is based in Kingsfold, has announced its shortlisted finalists and is calling out to the public to vote for its favourite. The group with the most votes will win. This will be the fourth and final £500 donation to a charitable cause in 2018 from D.W. Nye. Rex Nye, who is the company’s Managing Director, said: “We’ve had a phenomenal response to our Proud to be Local campaign this year, and some absolutely fantastic nominations for worthy causes. It has been a real honour to assist them in raising awareness. I am looking forward to

finding out who our winner of the public vote will be this time round.” The three causes that have been shortlisted this time are: Jigsaw School, Dunsfold Jigsaw School in Dunsfold is an independent day school for children and young people with an autism spectrum disorder. The school hopes to spend the funds on a number of vital projects, including the much needed redevelopment of its early years playground. Heads On - Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Heads On is Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s charity. It helps people with mental health problems to feel supported, to stay active and to be more involved in their communities. It would like to use the money to fund a gardening project to help

those they support to grow their own fruit and vegetables to use in the hospital kitchen at Langley Green Hospital and during cookery classes. 2nd Horsham Scout Group Each week, 2nd Horsham Scout Group helps over 100 young people aged 6-18 enjoy fun and adventure while developing the skills they need to succeed. This includes installing acoustic panels in its Scout Hut to reduce noise amplification and echo so that young people can enjoy their activities without struggling to hear each other. Votes can be cast in three simple ways; Either by visiting D.W. Nye’s depot in Kingsfold along the A24 and posting a token in the relevant voting box, clicking the chosen group on the poll that will be pinned to the top of D.W. Nye’s Facebook page, or by emailing proudtobelocal@dwnye.co.uk and putting the name of the group being voted for in the subject line (only one email vote per address will be counted). Sussex employees recognised for 51 years of service Four members of staff from Billingshurst based full-service marketing agency, PMW Communications, were recently recognised for the impressive milestone of 51 years of combined service to the company. Digital Director, Graham Walker, joined PMW in 1998, only five years after the company was founded, and in the past 20 years has seen PMW grow exponentially, with an increased client base, team and office space. Additionally, Graphic Designer, Tim Crutkaew, was recognised for 11 years’ service, while Gemma Hook, a PR Director, and Martin Duval, also a Graphic Designer, joined the company 10 years ago this year. All four members of staff received

personal gifts as a mark of thanks from PMW’s Managing Director Peter Sutton. Coast to Capital Escalator Small Business Saturday sees students setting out their stalls in Horsham Programme Launches Horsham-based Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) recently launched its new Escalator Programme at an event showcasing the importance of scale-up businesses to the economy. Scale-up businesses disproportionately contribute to the growth of the economy through innovation, productivity, investment and job creation. This initiative is the first in the country to focus on providing bespoke support for businesses with a high potential for growth and will included a focused session each month on a specific barrier to growth. As part of the scheme, senior business leaders will engage with, and support, ambitious owners in the Coast to Capital area.

The programme will be developed and managed by Coast to Capital but delivered by a specialist external party, decided through competitive tender and forms a key part of the implementation of the Coast to Capital Strategic Economic Plan “Gatwick 360”. Jonathan Sharrock, Chief Executive at Coast to Capital, said: “We are delighted to have launched the Escalator Programme which will provide crucial business support to leaders and ensure that our area continues to boast some of the most prominent organisations in the country, we look forward to working with exciting and innovative scale-up businesses in the near future.”

On Saturday (1 December), amidst the busy stalls and activities of the Christmas Market in Horsham town’s Carfax, young entrepreneurs from local schools will showcase their company’s wares. Appropriately, it’s also Small Business Saturday, as the enthusiastic students from Horsham, Crawley and Mid Sussex schools compete for Best Trade Stand as part of the national Young Enterprise business set up competition for this area. The companies will receive expert advice about their stall displays and customer service skills from a local business owner, who’ll also judge the day’s competition. As part of the Young Enterprise programme, each company, which

runs for one whole trading year and has to set up as a proper business, receives ongoing mentoring from local business people. They learn how to manage finances, write a business plan, market their products and in most cases, manufacture them as well. Gordon Lindsay, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy at Horsham District Council is a strong supporter of both the Young Enterprise programme and Small Business Saturday. He commented: “It is so important to encourage entrepreneurial skills in young people and Young Enterprise has been delivering great projects for over 50 years. “Many of our local businesses have come from this background and they can vouch for the benefits the Young Enterprise pro-

gramme provides for local schools and their students.” Young Enterprise (www.youngenterprise.org.uk ), which has been running in the UK for over 50 years, is a programme of business education and mentoring run for Year 10 and 12 students from local schools and is supported by a board of local business volunteers in the Horsham, Crawley and Mid Sussex areas. Small Business Saturday UK (www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk. com/ ) is a national grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. It is quite appropriate that Young Enterprise companies started their trading lives at Horsham Market on this day, as market stalls really are the grass roots of retail businesses. Rabbit Patch Nursery-A dream come true Alexandra Tabor’s Reggio Emilia focussed child led learning nursery for children aged 2-5

What started as a dream and a few scribbles on a napkin has now turned into reality for Rabbit Patch day nursery owner Alex Tabor. Proudly showing me around her haven for Children aged 2-5 its clear that Rabbit Patch offers a great experience for its young guests and its caring team members. A nursery following the Reggio Emilia concept, where activities are primarily child led, Rabbit Patch leans itself very much on the side of allowing Children to discover through learning and interaction with not just each other but nature too. A large outdoor space at the back of the nursery houses chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs as well as plenty of trees and other greenery for the Children to learn from. With plans to

expand this area to incorporate a forest school too, the opportunities for the little people keep growing! A wander around the rooms, named Silver Birch and Willow Tree enhance the feel for nature and the natural environment that Alex wants to create, “Both of our rooms lead directly to the garden and each one has natural, interactive toys for Children to play with and learn from.” she says. A third room is on the way, planned for April 2019 to cater for 0-2yrs, “It is currently our creative room but will be converted and a teepee made as our new creative room for all to enjoy.” says Alex. The teepee sounds a great idea and I see that the Children have been creating their own small version in one room, complete with paint

hand prints adorning it, next to this was a piece where the little learners enjoyed making a path of paint footprints. It stands out that interaction and messy play are encouraged but it isn’t just the Children that are encouraged to involve themselves, “We take what we can from Parents and the community, whether it be new ideas, or activities. We also have a newly formed Parents Committee, its voluntary and we encourage more to volunteer if they wish to be part of it.” Noticing the passion with which Alex talks about her role at the nursery I asked what got her into setting up her own, “I was educated in early years, I did some volunteering, learnt about childcare, got my degree and thought there was something different I could offer.”

A week spent in Reggio Emilia then furthered her passion and aspirations, “I visited and just learnt a lot about a Child led environment.” The end result being Rabbit Patch.

They also get the chance for 4 free settling sessions As we chat I witness the Chef taking part in some creative activities with a table full of excited Children. Openly encouraging diversity through food, the chef prepares a menu on a four week cycle ensuring the part time Children get to experience as

much alteration to their meals as the Child that visits five days a week. Once she has finished her primary role though its straight into the rooms to continue taking the Children on their journey of learning and discovery. The team here at Rabbit Patch clearly enjoy their roles and Alex is keen for them to have the same opportunities she did ensuring that they each get the chance to furthur develop themselves with all levels of Childcare qualifications. As I am about to leave, a family are about to be taken on a tour with a view to signing their Daughter up, I asked Alex if there are many such tours, “Yes, all prospective Parents get a show round and if anyone wants to book one all they need to do is call or email us. They also get the chance for 4 free settling sessions.” The chickens stand at the door, attempting to shelter from the rain and Alex mentions how the Children love to feed the animals but she leaves the cleaning out of the nursery pets to herself for the weekend due to living on the site, “In years to come it will become a furthur extension of the nursery but for now its home and it means I am always available.” A little chap gives me a wave whilst I am waiting outside and I hear him telling his Dad about how much fun he had. It would be hard to disagree with him after what I saw today, a new learning and interactive experience in a creative safe environment. If you want to know more about Rabbit Patch then give them a call on 01403 891976.

Apache: 25 years of setting trends Now

For 25 years Apache has been THE destination shop for your menswear in Horsham. Founded by Stuart Gordon alongside Lee Hurst the shop has become synonymous with quality clothing at great prices. Proud to

1993

have always been a venue that has led but never followed, Apache has moved with the times and allowed its huge array of customers to benefit from both Stuart and Lee’s in depth product knowledge. They pride themselves on the

attention they not only give their products but their patrons too and a quick look at the testimonials on the Apache website validate this. With a strong showing on google reviews too its apparent that a shopping experience here will benefit you in both the pocket and the wardrobe! When the doors opened in 1993 it wasn’t surprising to see brands such as Firetrap, Sonetti, Dready, Dosse Posse or Schott adorn the walls, and as trends change so do the brands although some classics always remain, “We stocked Fred

Perry back then but it was only a very small amount.” says Stuart as he acknowledges the large space the British heritage brand now fills in his store. 25 years later Fred Perry is still more than holding its own against newer brands such as Farah, Diesel, Lyle and Scott and Gym King. With matching customer demand a priority Stuart says, “We have a loyal base of customers, some move away, even as far as Australia, yet still shop with us using our website ApacheOnline, we have some that may have

seen an item elsewhere and ask us about it, so we place a special order with the suppliers to try and locate it.” Many shops stock brands but lack the personal touch and this is another attribute that Apache are proud of, being genuine authorised stockists of all that they sell means that It is not uncommon for Stuart or Lee to be at the company showrooms viewing the pre booked ranges with their clientele in mind thus meaning that when a customer approaches with a question they have first hand knowledge of the product or brand. It is also worth mentioning that in a time when retail is floundering due to the versatile nature of online sellers , Apache continue to get stronger and stronger. The website showcases a huge range of clothing and accessories and allows you to interact with the shop should you have a query and the store itself is constantly refreshing its window displays with an eye catching display of the most in demand items. This landmark anniversary is approaching its end but who wouldn’t say no to another 25 years of Apache! Happy Birthday!

Christmas concert in support of Medical Detection Dogs Christ’s Hospital Choral Society

ǡ ͳ͵ ʹͲͳͺ ͹Ǥ͵Ͳ Christ’s Hospital Chapel - Ǩ

The Christmas concert by Christ’s Hospital Choral Society is one of the highlights of the festive season. The school’s Chapel setting is atmospheric, the music is sublime, the audience joining is immensely satisfying, and the mince pies and wine finishes off the night beautifully. For their concert the choir presents an eclectic range of music, varying from the little- to the well-known. While some pieces will be sung by the choir only, the audience will be invited to stand up and join in with other pieces, their notes echoing around the Chapel. After the concert mince pies and wine will be served in the Dining Hall, where you can have a chat with the singers, or just enjoy the festive afterglow. This year the Choral society is delighted to support Medical Detection Dogs. This is a small charity that works with dogs’ incredible power of smell. There are

two main branches; Medical Alert Assistance Dogs, and Bio Detection dogs. The Alert Dogs warn people with acute medical life-threatening conditions for which they get no warning, mainly Type 1 Diabetes. When a patients suffer a sudden drop in blood sugar levels they have a big problem. The illness is normally diagnosed at a young age, and there is nothing the patient can do to prevent it. The dogs are trained to alert their owners when their blood sugar level drops or rises outside safe levels so that they can take avoiding action. It is amazing to see the dogs in action. Bio Detection dogs assess samples of a number of illnesses, mainly breast and prostate cancers, Parkinson’s and Malaria. Illnesses cause changes in cells and this in turn gives off a smell that dogs easily and reliably identify. This helps scientists to identify what it is that dogs smell - at the moment we don’t know. The aim

of this to develop an easy, cheap, and above all reliable method of testing for these illnesses at an early stage, at the GP’s, for instance. Early diagnosis means early treatment and much better chances of recovery. Breast cancers can be very hard to pick up and prostate cancers even more so. The dogs work Monday to Friday, live with families and spend their evenings and weekends as happy family pets! The Christmas concert is ever popular and it is recommended to book your places in advance. Tickets from Choir members, CH Box Office, 01403 247434 (AM only). Some tickets may still be available at the door. Donations will go to support Medical Detection Dogs. Do come, listen, and join in on Thursday 13 December, 7.30 PM, The Chapel, Christ’s Hospital School, RH13 0YP. You will love it!

The Big Enourmous Present at The Hawth

What could possibly be inside the Big ENORMOUS Present, which has appeared mysteriously in the school playground? Who might it be for?

To find out, come and join the Pied Piper Theatre Company at The Hawth, Crawley, on Saturday 15 December. The Big ENORMOUS Present is a delightfully engaging play for young theatregoers and their families. It explores the pressures of fitting in and making friends, of finding happiness and how giving can feel as good as receiving. The story unfolds in a school playground where Polly, Jack and Dot find a really big present (it’s actually ENORMOUS) and discover there’s a lot more to learn than just finding out what’s hidden inside. This charming 50-minute show bursts with original music and songs to excite imaginations, and is a perfect introduction to the magic of live theatre story telling. To add to the enjoyment of the show, The Pied Piper Theatre website, www.piedpiperthea-

Horsham go into second half of season on a high Saturday November 24 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Ipswich Ladies 2 4 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham go into their prolonged Christmas and New Year break with a win from their long trek to Suffolk, moving them up to

sixth in the table, Ladies Captain Charlotte (CJ) White telling the District Post: “Our spirits were high after some challenging but strong performances against upper table sides and, without being complacent, we were expecting to end the first half of the season on a high given Ipswich’s lowly position.” And, Horsham got off to a great start with quick goals from both Elle Blakesley and South Af-

sponsored by

rican international Bella de Rocha, and after continuing to threaten the net they were controlling the pitch. But, a lapse in Horsham concentration enabled Ipswich to claw back a goal, doubling their scoring tally for the season. Horsham, though, responded with a short corner drag flick from Naomi Kelly, this season’s new recruit from Oxford. Then, Horsham put the result beyond doubt with what CJ White described as: “A beauti-

fully worked second half team goal put in by Bex Ross.” Ipswich reduced the deficit after being awarded a disputed short corner, but CJ summed up saying: “We were very pleased to win 4-2, this success elevates us in the table and we intend to carry on being a threat now that we are back in the National League.” Horsham return to league action on February 2nd with a home game against

fourth-placed Cambridge City, meanwhile they will be playing in an indoor tournament and in the cup. At the mid point of the league campaign Hampstead & Westminster head the table, two points clear of Wimbledon, with Southgate in the penultimate position and Ipswich marooned at the bottom without a point after losing all of their nine games to date.

Goals ten a penny in festive Horsham win

Photo by Clive Turner Saturday November 24 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 6 4 Woking Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter After a succession of tough games, against upper table opposition, Horsham pulled off a welcome win against struggling Woking at Christ’s Hospital last Saturday. It may not have been a game for the purists, but the highly entertaining goal fest brightened the gloomy overhead conditions. Horsham started strongly with two short corners in as many minutes, Sean Pearcy’s smash being palmed away from the first. Strong Horsham build ups were negated before Ed Marsh’s Horsham goal was disallowed because of the back of the stick

strike, but Horsham did not have much longer to wait for their first goal, when, after the lion’s share of possession and concerted pressure, Pearcy converted a short corner in the 12th minute. Woking immediately responded, levelling the score following inadequate clearance of their rare attack. Horsham then fired a dangerous cross in front of the visitors’ goal, but it went unconnected and, after short corners at each end, the break came at one apiece with no hint of eight more goals. Minutes into the second half Toby Fraser fired into an empty goal to restore Horsham’s lead, but a defensive lapse promptly allowed Woking to reach parity again. Horsham, though, kept pushing. Their fourth short corner was thwarted by the cross bar, then a Joey Humphreys back hander was swatted away, before he succeeded with the same

method ahead of being up-ended by Woking’s keeper, Pearcy putting Horsham 4-2 up from the resultant penalty. On fire, Humphreys then latched onto a supply, further increasing Horsham’s lead with the keeper well out of position. And, it soon got even better, Fraser finishing off a Zac Chinn/ Humphreys combo to give Horsham an unassailable four goal cushion. Disappointingly, however, Woking broke through for their third, before adding a fourth from the penalty spot after a Horsham defender’s foot had blocked a short corner in the goal mouth. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “It was great to see us scoring goals and come away with a much needed win. Joey showed his goal scoring capability – perhaps he should shoot more often!” Man of the Match Joey added: “Zac, Toby and I practise passing moves in training and it was very pleasing that three of our goals came from these manoeuvres.” While, Horsham’s veteran keeper Nick Evans said: “I’m getting such a buzz on my come back to Horsham’s 1s – the second oldest person in our team is 29 years younger than me and its hard, but I’m really enjoying it!” Nick rushed from the field three weeks ago to travel to Yorkshire for an England O50s game and last Saturday he celebrated Horsham’s win against Woking with a game for Horsham’s mixed team. On Saturday Horsham travel to Mottingham’s London Marathon Sports Ground, south east of the capital, to take on 9th in the table Blackheath & Eltham, one place and one point below Horsham. Guildford remain top, while Woking are in the penultimate spot, above Slough, who are still awaiting their first point, having lost all nine games to date.

Horsham Gymnasts do well in English Championships Gymnastics Martin Read - Sports Reporter In recognition of the excellent season enjoyed by the Horsham Gymnastics Centre, six of their outstanding performers competed in Leicester at the English Bronze, Silver and Gold Championships – and, once again, they gave a telling account of themselves. In the Silver 12-13 years section, Phoebe Light was crowned English Bar Champion, with Cissy Marlow third! Cissy was also 3rd on the beam, with Isobel (Izzy) Carr 4th. While, in the Silver 10-11 years category, Morgan Millar ended as a highly credible 8th on beam and 10th on the floor. Lola McNaughton was up against especially stiff opposition, but still managed to secure 13th place on the beam and 16th on floor. Although they were both competing in large categories – against 40

gymnasts - Morgan and Lola were placed 16th and 19th respectively overall. And, on completion, Cissy was rated 4th overall, Phoebe 5th, and Izzy 11th. The girls were delighted to meet Olympian, GB, Commonwealth and World medallist gymnast Kelly Simm, who presented their medals. In the Gold 11+ years category Honesty South pulled off 3rd place on the vault, bars and beam – and 3rd overall – exceptional results in a very tough and close competition with no upper age limit and extremely fine margins separating the competitors. Commenting on the results, Horsham Gymnastics Centre Artistic Coach Lisa Jestico said: “Very well done to our girls for coming back with seven English medals and for finishing the competition season on such a very positive note!”

Bill Bailey, President of Barns Green RFC honoured by RFU Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Bill Bailey, President of Barns Green Rugby Football Club has received a special award from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for his services to the club. Bill was invited as a guest to Twickenham for the England v All Blacks match on November 10th where he received the RFU ‘Value the Volunteer’ Award, given to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the game of rugby and donated their time to help their club develop and prosper. Bill, one of the founders of Barns Green Rugby club in 1991 – conceived on a cricket tour to Gloucestershire in the Will Carling era - was nominated for his award by Sussex RFU. And, he has been part of the leadership team at the club for the entire 21 intervening years. Since then and

despite some very tough times, the club has grown and developed and is now playing in Harvey’s Armada Ale sponsored Division Two of the Sussex League. RFU President, Chris Kelly hosted Bill’s big day out, which included a tour of Twickenham prior to kick off, including visits to the England team dressing room, the tunnel and pitch side area, the medical centre and the Sky TV studio. There was a reception in the prestigious Members Lounge, where all the great and the good of the game including many ex international players were gathered, followed by a pre match lunch and a subsequent dinner - at which England head coach, Eddie Jones, presented Bill with his award. To cap it all off Bill’s party’s match seats were in the Royal Box, just a couple of rows from RFU Patron, Prince Harry. Commenting on the award, Bill Bailey said, “So many people have

put in huge amounts of time and effort to get Barns Green Rugby Club to where it is today and all those people deserve a lot of credit. I am extremely proud of everything the club has achieved since it started back in 1991 and the great support we have received from Sussex RFU, playing a major part in our survival and success. We will continue to strengthen our links with them and if everything goes to plan we will be able to improve all of our facilities on and off pitch so that we can continue to attract new players to play for us and grow and thrive as a club”. England international Joe Launchbury played both rugby and cricket for Barns Green while at Christ’s Hospital School and, in addition to the club’s other side, the Stags, there is now the ladies’ TagWags team, which has played in tournaments, including visiting Belgium. Barns Green

train both outdoors and indoors and the friendly club is always pleased to welcome prospective new players – further information

Bath pull the plug on Horsham’s FA great Trophy run

Photo by John Lines Sunday November 25 – Buildbase FA Trophy – Horsham 1 2 Bath City Football Martin Read - Sports Reporte Once again, underdogs Horsham gave a good account of themselves against more senior opposition, but in the end, Bath City’s two league advantage proved just a little too much for the gallant Hornets, ending their eight match winning streak with heads held high. Bath, though, despite hopes of entering the National League next season, were given plenty to think about in their first encounter with Horsham, the principal difference between the two sides being an outstanding second half goal by Sean Rigg, until which

the Hornets had held Bath at one apiece for over 40 minutes. Bath were obliged to field 16 year old Harvey Wiles-Richards in goal, but the teenager had no difficulty in negating Will Hoare’s early shot. Horsham continued pressing, only to go one down in the tenth minute when Jack Batten headed home with assistance from the woodwork. Despite being in control, Bath almost conceded an equaliser, Wiles-Richards diving to thwart Tyrell Richardson-Brown’s volley. However, the Hornets did not have to wait much longer to restore parity – after appeals for a penalty were ignored, Charlie Harris sent in a curling free kick, evading the wall and into the top corner. Before the break, Bath missed a golden opportunity to regain the lead, but mercifully headed wide when it

should have been easier to score. The second half began with both sides playing cannily to avoid conceding the advantage, but Hornets’ keeper Josh Pelling had to be on his toes to prevent Bath sub Tom Smith from scoring. Rob O’Toole then got the ball in the net for Horsham but the ref’s whistle promptly blew for offside and Bath secured territorial advantage, but without looking too likely to retake the lead - until, at one end Harris blasted just wide, while at the other, Rigg saw his attempt safely gathered by Pelling. Rigg, though, did put the visitors ahead midway through the half with the decisive goal when he jinked through into the penalty area to unleash a corkscrew past Pelling. Bath then sought to close down the game, perhaps being aware of Horsham’s propensity to snatch victory with a late goal, their defence keeping the Hornets at bay while Pelling prevented Smith from doing further damage. The game ended contentiously, when after a handball incident Horsham were allowed to play on with the advantage, but just when Richardson-Brown entered the box a free kick – the final action of the game - was awarded and cleared harmlessly ending Horsham’s impressive FA Trophy escapades. On Saturday Horsham revert to league action, entertaining Whitstable, 11th in the table – five places below the Hornets. But, on Tuesday (December 4th) the Hornets welcome Eastbourne Borough, 14th in the Vanarama National League South, in Round 3 of the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup. Borough have one win from their last five games.

Heath delighted with third win on the bounce Saturday November 23 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 2 1 East Preston Football Martin Read - Sports Reporte Seriosly depleted by non availability and injury, forcing a changed line up, Broadbridge Heath, now 7th, notched up a hat trick of wins with victory over mid table East Preston on a very difficult surface at the Leisure Centre last Saturday. Heath got off to a great start when, with just 43 seconds gone, Ollie Moore turned and chested down Dean Wright’s pass before burying the ball into the far corner of the net. Sensing blood, Heath kept pressing but were unable to magic another goal, and with the floodlights faltering, fortunately

only temporarily, the visitors threatened, but after Moore had narrowly missed increasing Heath’s lead, the score remained 1-0 at the break. The resumption began quietly with Heath probing for an all-important second goal, George Cousins and Max Howell – on his last appearance before going to work abroad for five months – putting East Preston keeper Bentley under pressure, to which he responded well – until he had no chance of stopping Andy Waddington’s deflection off Wright’s fierce strike. Wiith 2-0 looking like a commanding lead, East Preston clawed back a goal when an incomplete Heath clearance found its way to Daniel Huet for him to fire home. Energised, Preston threw everything into attack, but keeper Kieron Thorp and the Heath defence successfully negated a barrage of uncomfortable free kicks and corners,

the game finishing with Heath three points to the good. Sam Chapman deputising for absent Heath Manager Steve Painter, told the District Post: “This was always going to be a tough game as East Preston are well organised and hard working with some players that can really hurt you. But, overall it was a very solid performance with every player contributing to a good level, Scott Weller making a long awaited comeback unfortunately picking up a booking. Post match our players went off for a well-deserved preChristmas night out after a job well done.” On Saturday Heath are due to go to the Oval, Eastbourne United’s ground, the venue of a recent postponement when Chichester City had been scheduled to visit. United are stranded at the bottom of the table with just two wins from 15 starts.

YMCA go four points clear with avenging win Saturday November 24 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 5 3 Little Common Football Martin Read - Sports Reporte Less than three weeks before lowly Little Common had come to Gorings Mead to eliminate high flying YMCA from the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup, but, on a dismal, damp day last Saturday YM took revenge, cheering up their supporters with a comfortable win, which might have been even more decisive. Starting with a barrage of attacks, YM were repaid with a corner, which was initially denied by the bar, before Guy Harding headed home in the eighth minute. Then, Dean Bown latched onto Tony Garrod’s free kick from the right, swivelled and crashed the ball in from close range to give YM a 2-0 advantage within a quarter of an hour. After Jack Hartley was just unable to finish, Little Common broke through to beat the onrushing Aaron Jeal from a tight angle to reduce the deficit. A Luke Gedling set piece was collected by Callum Donaghey, but he was off target before Jeal’s out-stretched foot kept out the visitors’ response to a corner, the keeper having just flown in from Las Vegas. But, YM were calling the shots and Bown made it 3-1 with a beautiful goal, his perfectly flighted volley dropping into the far right top corner, until, four minutes later, a hopeful Little Common kick floated over Jeal’s head and dropped into the net, the fifth goal of the match with barely 30 minutes on the clock. YM, though, were still mounting forays and Harding’s header from a corner went out to Dan Mobsby, whose shot was well saved. Two more corners followed – one apiece – Bown’s strike being somehow blocked as the break came with YM 3-2 to the good. An early second half LC corner was

well caught by Jeal, high above his head, but YM were creating most of the danger – a superb Garrod run culminating with him firing just over before Jack Hartley was marginally off target. After a YM corner LC counter attacked until a long Alex Barbary run culminated with the ball in the side netting. Lively YM looked likely to score and when another incursion was scrambled from the goal line, Barbary was on hand to make it 4-2 after 18 minutes. Barbary then combined with Harding and Garrod, whose pile-driver was just wide. Another threatening YM build up followed, but Bown’s attempt was well saved. Three more YM attacks came and went, along with a corner and at the end of a strong passing move sub Sam Schaaf’s shot was safely gathered by the keeper, before Schaaf fired over, but after his subsequent strike ricocheted off for a corner, unmarked Barbary made it 5-2 with seven minutes of allocated time remaining. With YM continuing to create opportunities, Bown induced a good reaction save and then seared the bar, Tony Nwachukwu coming on to test LC with a close cross cum shot. Despite YM’s dominance LC hit them with a late high goal, followed by another YM corner, for whom the game finished in 5-3 victory, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “Our three points were never in doubt, but we should have won that 5-1. We’re going to have to dig deep at Hassocks on Saturday – injuries and suspensions could deprive us of up to seven regulars.” 17th in the table Hassocks beat Lingfield last weekend. With Chichester City being unable to play because of adverse pitch conditions at Eastbourne United (bottom), YM top the table with 42 points, four more than Newhaven and eight more than Chichester. YM have played 17 matches, whereas Newhaven and Chichester have completed 16 and 15 respectively.

YMCA battle through to beat Lancing Tuesday November 20 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 2 0 Lancing Football Martin Read - Sports Reporte YM maintained momentum, securing their top spot with a workmanlike win against Lancing, who proved to be a tough nut to crack despite their mid table position. The game started with attacks at both ends, before, in the 7th minute, a YM shot was tipped over the bar for a corner, then a speculative YM cross went unfulfilled. Play was end to end with corners aplenty – by half time YM had five and Lancing two, the visitors’ first real shot being comfortably gathered by YM keeper Sam Smith deputising for the holidaying Aaron Jeal. YM were creating more chances, but Dean Bown, prone at full stretch was just unable to connect with Sam Schaff’s pass and Oli Gill shot just wide in a one on one from the edge

of the box, the first half ending goal-less after Gill’s long range effort ahead of Lancing landing a ball on top of the goal and then firing harmlessly over. YM resumed with Bown slotting the ball wide and Jack Hartley unleashing an attempt from afar. Dan Evans then broke through to no avail and Tony Garrod clipped the post. Three home corners followed, the last of which finally getting YM on the score sheet, Callum Donaghey heading home in the 73rd minute. Lancing had two more corners, in between which Garrod burst through and crossed into open space. Then, in the dying moments Hartley came in from the left and somehow screwed the ball in from an almost impossibly wide angle. During excessive extra time, pin ball action denied Lancing, but YM had done enough to win 2-0, Peter Buckland saying: “Lancing came here determined not to lose and didn’t really have many scoring chances. – that was hard work for us, but we broke them down in the end!”
