Staff at the store, in West Street, have said they’re delighted to be supporting the charity, which provides care and support to hundreds of children and young people and their families each year. Kumar Keshavji, store director in Horsham, said: “We are delighted to be able to support Chestnut Tree House this Christmas. It is a great cause which does so much for local families. “So please take a few minutes, if you can, to drop in a new toy or your spare change this festive season. It really will make a difference.”

Helping Horsham’s homeless in the run up to the festive season

Horsham District Council is offering advice to local residents on how best to help the homeless community of the District during the run up to Christmas and beyond.

Many of the District’s residents are incredibly generous towards people who they believe to be homeless, however, it is important that this generosity is diverted to the most appropriate

channels to ensure that any donations are used most effectively for the benefit of those who need it most. People wishing to support the homeless are urged to donate to charities, rather than giving money or food direct to people they think may be sleeping rough or homeless, as this assures those most in need receive the right help in the right way, and it helps to break the cycle of homelessness. The Council has developed a number of options to engage with rough sleepers in our District. Our Homelessness Outreach Service sees experienced team members locate and support those who are sleeping rough or are vulnerably housed , providing a tailored service to individuals in need, who are in the main known personally to our outreach workers. Additionally, the Council has recently recruited teams of Neighbourhood Wardens across the District’s towns and villages who regularly patrol areas of concern, identifying to our Housing Services team any people who may be at risk. The Council offers a drop-in advice service at the council offices

at Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham from 9am - 5pm every weekday, and it has also developed partnerships with Turning Tides, Horsham Matters and Horsham Churches Together to work collaboratively on helping the homeless and preventing homelessness in the first place. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, commented: “Preventing homelessness for people in housing need will always be a priority for us as a council. “It is always troubling to see anyone sleeping rough on our streets, especially at this time of year. “Thankfully we have in place numerous services and outlets who are best equipped to directly help vulnerable individuals throughout the year, but especially at this crucial time.” The Council also links in with partners at the Salvation Army, local church groups, Change Grow Live (drug and alcohol services) and other statutory organisations in order to support homeless people. During this current cold period a night shelter is operated by Horsham Matters every day with

referrals being assessed by Turning Tides. The night shelter will remain open every night until 15 March 2018. Special thanks are given to the 200 volunteers who are tirelessly working to provide a hot meal, comfortable bed and a friendly ear to rough sleepers. If anyone would like to volunteer to assist those using the night shelters, please contact Emma Elnaugh at Horsham Matters on 0300 124 0204 or emma. elnaugh@horsham-matters.org. uk . Working with the Salvation Army, Turning Tides also run the Hope Inn drop in service on Thursday evenings from 6pm – 7.30pm at The Salvation Army, Booth Way, Horsham, RH13 5PZ, and a breakfast club on Monday mornings from 9am – 12pm also at The Salvation Army where advice and assistance is available. If you are concerned about someone sleeping rough in England or Wales, you can highlight them using the StreetLink website: http://www.streetlink. org.uk/ The details provided are sent to the Council’s Homeless Outreach team to help us to locate the individual and connect them to support.

Best Years of Your Life A History of Horsham’s Private Schools 1887 -1990 horsham museum Today, the fascinating story of the network of Horsham’s private boys and girls schools has been almost wiped from history, like chalk dust from the blackboard. However, after nearly twenty years’ research, former teacher, Elizabeth Vaughan, has rescued those faint traces left by the dust of history and created a fascinating story that lights up, like the new digital whiteboard, the history of Horsham’s private schools from 1887-1990. Horsham was a hot bed of private education. Middle class parents were deserting the state system and sending their young to private schools to become the leaders of post-World War one Britain. Schools such as Horsham College, Springfield Park Preparatory School, Heron’s Ghyll, Forest Grange, Parkfield, The Manor House or St Peter’s School, St John’s College, Causeway School, Gringley are just some of the 21 recorded in the book. Using first-hand oral and written accounts by former pupils, adverts from the local press, prospectuses and photographs, as well as a thorough knowledge of the town’s history, Elizabeth has woven a series of mini essays that tell the history of each school. In addition, Liz has added the human

touch by using the memories of real pupils – Mrs Monro Higg at the Causeway School wore a pink angora jumper and Miss Neve at Heron’s Ghyll was remembered as having a lovely smile and a good sense of humour. That school targeted the daughters of gentlemen who went hunting with the Horsham and Crawley Hunt, and some of the former pupils were presented at court. This reveals a hidden side to Horsham and how the town functioned in time that is so close, yet so distant in so many ways. A few of the pupils at these schools went on to achieve national and international fame, including the popular author Hammond Innes who attended Causeway School, Donald Campbell, who later broke eight world water speed records attended The Manor House School opposite, and of course, the actress Virginia Mckenna went to Heron’s Ghyll. With numerous photographs, delightful sketches and fascinating quotes ‘The Best Years of your Life? A History of Horsham’s Private Schools 1887-1990’ is a real treat that rewards the reader with real insights in to Horsham. Those that read it will willingly give Elizabeth Vaughan a Gold star and an apple. The Best years of your life? by Elizabeth Vaughan is available only from Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, where Elizabeth has worked as a volunteer for over 20 years. Published by the Friends of

Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, the book has been designed by Edwina Wilsher, who has recently joined the Friends and also

volunteers at the Museum. ‘The Best Years of your Life? A History of Horsham’s Private Schools 1887-1990’ a fully il-

lustrated paperback is available at £9.50. A perfect Christmas present for anyone interested in the history and heritage of Horsham.

Farlington Pre Prep Nativity play

Children from Farlington School Reception, Prep 1 and Prep 2 performed the musical Nativity ‘Hey Ewe!’ this year to a packed audience of friends and family in the Trina Mawer Hall. They were joined by some of the

older children from Little Barn Owls Nursery, who played adorable sheep. The play featured all the traditional characters - Mary and Joseph, Kings, shepherds and narrators - along with a very

curious sheep, who followed the Kings to Bethlehem. The children sang with great enthusiasm and spoke their lines beautifully, putting everyone firmly in the festive spirit.

Junior Neighbourhood Watch awards at Upper Beeding Primary As part of its Primary School after-school club programme, Horsham District’s Junior Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) came to Upper Beeding Primary this term, strongly supported by Upper Beeding Parish Council, who agreed to provide funds to support the course. Most appropriately, the presentation of the award certificates was made by the Upper Beeding Parish Council Chairman, Councillor Simon Birnstingl, accompanied by Councillor Pauline Kentell, who is also the NHW Area Coordinator for Upper Beeding. PC Mike Harvey attended representing Horsham District Police - also Upper Beeding’s two Neighbourhood Wardens, and a good number of parents and relatives to witness the presentation of framed award certificates to the course participants. The six course sessions were conducted by Junior NHW volunteers. In one session the class were taken though the procedures of the Magistrates’ Court, with an actual Magistrate conducting a mock trial with role playing - a very enjoyable session for all concerned. For another session, a West Sussex

Resilience and Emergency Service Adviser came to show film clips, to demonstrate how householders can be prepared to respond safely and effectively to community emergencies such as floods and severe weather conditions. Completion of this “Resilience” session qualifies as the first stage of the Duke of Cornwall’s Home Safety Award, with further stages to be completed at Secondary School. Police and Police Community Support Officers came to two of the sessions to Police. The 6 sessions of the course combine to show young people that they can make their own contribution to community issues, and help to ensure home and neighbourhood safety and security. The Upper Beeding junior citizens were photographed receiving their award certificates, followed by a group photo, and they were told that they were now members of Neighbourhood Watch for life, and were reminded to be sure to pass on to parents, demonstrate the very close and positive co-operation that NHW enjoys with West Sussex grandparents and friends, all that they had learned in their course.

Jeremy Quin MP delivers Queen’s Tree to QEII School Horsham MP Jeremy Quin visited QEII Special School in Horsham last week to personally deliver a tree as part of the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project. He was given a tour of the school’s Post-16 garden area, which is being redeveloped with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to be more accessible for all the school’s students. Project leader, Georgina ral Verdu, gave him a tour, to show the work that has been carried out so far to make the whole area

wheelchair friendly, then shared the plans that students have been working on and introduced him to some of her team. Jeremy spent some time talking with the students about their plans and which of the plants already growing were their favourites. The Queen’s tree will be planted as part of the ongoing development of the garden. While at QEII, Jeremy was also able to meet some of the students who worked on the school’s entry to the RHS Wisley Christmas Tree competition –

selected as one of only ten to be displayed in the grand final at the garden. You can see QEII’s tree, and vote for them to win the competition, by visiting RHS Wisley before January 6. Head teacher, Lesley Dyer, said she was “always delighted to have support from Jeremy. It was lovely to be able to show him how the garden will develop into an area that as well as being attractive and functional is accessible to all our students who have complex learning needs and physical disabilities.”

Collyer’s students visit Pineapple Studios

A group of Collyer’s Performing Arts students recently had the opportunity to take part in Samba drumming workshops at the world famous Pineapple Studios. The session was part of a busy theatre tour trip to the West End of London. Neil Kendall, the Head of Drama and Theatre Studies at the Ofsted Outstanding sixth form college, said: “Our students are always looking for ways to fuse physical theatre with music, so this workshop was the perfect opportunity. At the end of each year, they create a devised musical over a four week period, so we are looking forward to great things – and lots of drums!” Located in the heart of the West End Theatre district, Pineapple Studios is a well-known rehearsal studio used by stars

such as Beyoncé, Madonna and Kylie Minogue. Neil added; “Huge thanks to Pineapple Studios for hosting us – they’ve been absolutely fantastic and gave us an incredibly warm welcome. “The sessions were brilliant and the students acquitted themselves wonderfully!” As part of the trip, the students also enjoyed the unique opportunity of special access to the press night of the National Theatre’s ‘Hadestown’. Tanbridge House School Presentation Evening

Year 12 students returned to Tanbridge House School earlier this month, when they were invited back in for a special evening of celebrations. On Wednesday 5 December, over 350 people from the Class of 2018, including friends and family members, came together to attended the new style GCSE Presentation Evening, now entitled ‘A Celebration of Achievement’ – sponsored by DHM Stallard. The new style evening aims to focus on a range of achievements and accolades for the class of 2018 and ensure that the entire year group have the opportunity to share in these celebrations. During the evening, ex-students were able to collect their GCSE certificates before a number of prizes and awards were handed out to mark some of the academic,

and personal, triumphs of the year group. The students also enjoyed seeing their year 6 induction day video again, as well as listening to a speech delivered by Niall Erskine and Charleigh Lacey, the ex-Head Boy and Girl. In addition to a number of annual subject and achievement awards, a new award – the THS Role Model Award – was given posthumously to Will Hallett and presented to his parents. Kirsty MacKay, ex-Leader of Year 11, made a wonderful tribute to Will, who sadly passed away earlier this year. One staff member was also awarded during the evening, through The Governors’ Award for Outstanding Commitment to THS. This was presented to Kitty Loveridge, a long standing peripatetic

Music Teacher who has served THS (as well as other schools) teaching strings for many years. The final award, the Leslie Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement and Contribution to School Sponsored by Horsham High School, was awarded to Salome Tirado Okeze, who achieved fantastic GCSE results and contributed greatly to school life. Jules White, Headteacher, said: “This was a fantastic evening which allowed us reflect back on the past academic year and formally acknowledge a high number of well deserving students. I would like to congratulate the year group for their results and achievements and say thank you to the school community as a whole, in particular Kirsty MacKay (Extended Leadership Team), Aaron Thorpe (Leader of Year) and Tracey Washington-Jones (Year 11 Pastoral Assistant).” The school would like to thank DMH Stallard for sponsoring the event, as well as a number of prize sponsors: Action Medical Research, Care UK, DJ80 Disco, Friends of THS, Gemini Data Loggers, Horsham CoWorking, Horsham Football Club, Horsham Mortgage Centre, Horsham Rotary Club, Horsham High School, John Snelling and Inner Wheel of Horsham, John and Carol Head, K.D.F. Local luncheon club holds Christmas Meal for the elderly

On Thursday 6 December, a special Christmas meal was held by Christ’s Hospital Luncheon Club for the Elderly and was sponsored by J K Leech Fuels of Coolham. A full Christmas lunch was enjoyed by a large group of elderly attendees, who regularly attend CH lunches, and include groups from sheltered accommodation in Horsham and Henfield. The guests were joined by pupils from Christ’s

Hospital who spent time with the group, eating and chatting with them. The junior choir and pupil bell ringers from Christ’s Hospital School kept the party entertained and brought some festive atmosphere to the proceedings. Graham Chandler, who currently runs the CH Community Action Programme, said of the event: “One of the key features of

the programme has always been the fellowship and support mutually offered by members, which explains why it is such a popular feature. Many thanks to J K Leech Fuels of Coolham for most generously donating funds, once again, to support this Christmas meal. Thanks also to Marjorie Holdsworth, who recently retired after organising and hosting these monthly lunches over many years at Christ’s Hospital.” Community Action has been organised at CH since 1987 and over 200 senior pupils (Years 10–13) voluntarily participate in the programme each week. More than 30 different placements are organised on a weekly basis throughout the academic year, including nursery schools, primary schools, special needs schools, residential homes for the elderly, hospices and charity shops, as well as a Ready and Able Sports Club and CH Day Centre lunches, which take place on the School site. Visits and activities take place on four afternoons a week in Horsham, Southwater, Billingshurst and Worthing. The School and some local voluntary agencies in and around Horsham provide transport.

Another picturesque Sussex landscape is under threat from opportunistic housing development, say supporters of the new Campaign to Protect Rural Henfield (CPRH). An application to build 42 properties in a green field on the western flank of Henfield, overlooking the South Downs and adjacent to the village’s historic Nep Town area, has provoked a furious response from local residents. The site, which was not identified for development in Horsham District’s strategic housing plan, was also considered unsuitable by Henfield’s Neighbourhood Plan of 2016. However, the Neighbourhood Plan, which took 3 years to develop and won 94.3% support in a community referendum, was over-turned when a developer appealed to the High Court on a technicality. This leaves Henfield vulnerable to speculative development while the local community works hard to get another Neighbourhood Plan in place. The developer argues that the green field is a ‘’windfall site’’,

which Horsham is obliged to accept for development. CPRH strongly disputes this. The hillside location lies outside the Built-Up Area Boundary of the village, an invisible, but crucial, line that separates developed, urban settlement from countryside that needs to be protected. Its rural setting connects via the Downs Link to the South Downs National Park and it already has a long history of planning rejections. A Planning Inspector once declared it would be “an incongruous and prominent extension of the builtup area into the countryside”. Locals say that situation has not changed. Residents fear that this proposal would be the “thin end of the wedge” for more development, a phrase which has become the CPRH campaign slogan. It would create an unnatural new boundary to the built-up area, which would then encourage other developers to claim they should build even more houses next to it. A glance at the map shows how easily the south-west of Henfield could be

swallowed up by housing. Local resident Julie Mitchell said “We strongly believe that this is ’the wrong field, in the wrong place’ for development.” Julie is one of the team of hard-working CPRH enthusiasts who are now are actively raising awareness amongst households in Henfield. CPRH chairman, Phil Johnson, explained the group fully recognises the national need for more housing and supports the local planning process to deliver it sensitively. He added: “Sadly, some developers do not recognise the vital importance of our countryside to our way of life and our wellbeing. Instead they like to portray residents as Nimbies who do not accept change.” Over 100 CPRH supporters gathered at the top of the field to demonstrate their strong feelings about the unsuitability of this proposal. The group urgently called on supporters of this campaign to write or email their objections to Horsham District Council before the deadline of 12 December 2018.

MP celebrates South Downs

producers at Parliament showcase Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert welcomed local food and drink producers to the Houses of Parliament for a ‘Taste of West Sussex’ event last month. On Thursday 29 November, Mr Herbert joined The Artisan Bakehouse (Ashurst), Wiston Estate wines, Rushfields farm shop (Poynings), Hepworths brewery (Pulborough), and Trenchmore (Cowfold), all of which are based in the Arundel & South Downs constituency. Sixteen producers were chosen from across West Sussex to represent the wide range of products made in the county, including dairy, meat, baked goods, coffee and wine. The businesses had the opportunity to speak to MPs and Minsters about their products and offer tastings. Special guest Kenny Tutt, who was MasterChef Champion 2018, praised the variety and quality of West Sussex food and drinks. He said: “West Sussex is a fantastic foodie destination with so many amazing artisan food and produce experiences for people to enjoy. We are blessed with fine cheese, ales, roasted coffee, ciders, spirits, chocolates, baked goods, honey and wine, and of course the famous Sussex

sparkling wines of the region. We also have great farmers producing stunning Sussex beef, Southdown lamb, pork, vegetables and salad, as well as the beautiful Sussex coast providing fresh, seasonal fish. We really do have it all in West Sussex.” The showcase is part of a wider West Sussex County Council initiative to promote rural enterprise and innovation by bringing together buyers and producers. There is a trend amongst shoppers for buying locally produced food and drink, and a growing popularity with farmers’ markets, farm shops and small retailers who stock local goods. Many West Sussex producers are also earning national and international recognition with a number of awards given to locally made products. Nick Herbert said: “I was delighted to welcome local producers to the House of Commons. I think the Taste of West Sussex was a fabulous showcase of the fine food and wine made in and around the South Downs. “I hope that the event helped to promote not just the individual businesses that came up to Westminster, but also the growing range of high quality local food and drink which is produced in our County.”

This was his second corporate networking event in his role for the charity. He has also played host to a variety of fun and fruitful race days. The aim of the networking morning was to engage business with charity in the locality, as well as raise awareness of and funds for, the DVLCC. The event offered the perfect opportunity for members

of the business community to learn more about the charity and to meet some of the staff, and parents of the children benefitting from the charity. DVLCC supports families with young children under five years of age with cerebral palsy and other motor learning impairments. Its centre in Cuckfield includes a state-of-the-art multi-sensory room. The networking event featured lots of engagement and delicious refreshments. Coffee was courtesy of Heather Barrie and Harrie’s Coffee and the special logo cakes

were provided by Faye Miller of Brighton Cakes. As well as participants learning more about the work and needs of the charity, it gave them the opportunity to network with each other in a very different setting. It included a presentation from Executive Manager, Pilar Cloud, Virginia Lewis-Jones (Dame Vera’s daughter and Vice President of the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity) and two parents. A Christmas Raffle and sales of DVLCC Christmas Cards raised £180 on the day. The event led to many connections within the business community with the promise of future involvement with the charity. Pilar Cloud, Executive Manager, DVLCC, said: “We were so pleased with the incredible turnout at the Business Pulse Networking Event that our Business Ambassador and Business Pulse founder, Nasser Elaheebocus, organised. It was a pleasure to welcome so many engaged individuals who came not only to network, but also to find out more about how they might get involved with this Charity. It is thanks to the varied and generous support we receive from local businesses, trusts, individuals and community groups that we are able to provide our vital early intervention service free to families with very young children with Cerebral Palsy and other motor impairments. I am so grateful to Nasser for all of his support.” Nasser, who won the Business Matter’s Business Personality of the year in 2017, is a well-known local businessman, entrepreneur and founder of Business Pulse in Horsham. He enthused: “What an amazing morning at the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity HQ.

Horsham retailer celebrates BBC TopGear Magazine Award win Doves Horsham is delighted to announce that the Volvo XC40 has been named the SUV of the Year in the 2018 BBC TopGear Magazine Awards. As part of the judging process, TopGear Magazine described the XC40, which is available at Doves Horsham, as “excellent” and a “considered, thoughtful, effective machine”. In its earlier review of the XC40, the magazine declared that “Volvo has made something distinctive”, making the point that “the values of an SUV correspond with many of the values of Volvo”. TopGear praised the XC40’s “comfy drive,” its “sense of all-weather security” and the “extremely well-organised and practical cabin”. Richard Law, General Manager at Doves Horsham, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see the XC40 named SUV of the Year by such a reputable magazine. “The premium car might be the smallest SUV in Volvo’s line-up, but it encapsulates everything the Volvo brand aims to deliver in terms of striking, modern design, effective, intelligent use of new technologies, along with innovative engineering and

unparalleled safety. “We are immensely proud of the XC40 and we encourage car buyers in Horsham to come and take a test drive to experience its award-winning features for themselves.” The XC40’s impressive honours list already includes the 2018 European Car of the Year title, and the model achieved the maximum five-star rating when it was subjected to the more rigorous 2018 assessment by the independent vehicle safety organisation Euro NCAP. Launched in September 2017, the XC40 is designed primarily for urban life, but is equally capable out on the open road in all weathers, especially those versions with all-wheel drive. The appeal of the XC40 has increased with the addition of Volvo’s new and highly efficient 156hp T3 three-cylinder petrol engine and the 190hp T4 petrol and 150hp D3 diesel units to the range. For more information on the Volvo XC40, and to use the online configurator, please go to www.volvocars.com/uk/cars/ new-models/xc40 or visit your local retailer, Doves Horsham, on Guildford Road, Horsham, 01403 791791.

The game’s afoot with Sherlock Laser show launch event Holmes: The Sign of Four for Horsham District Year After their sell-out performance of Jekyll & Hyde last year, Blackeyed Theatre return to The Capitol in January to bring to the stage a thrilling new adaptation of The Sign of Four, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s epic second Sherlock Holmes novel. When Mary Morstan arrives at Baker Street to request help following the mysterious disappearance of her father, Sherlock Holmes and his companion, Dr Watson, are plunged into a murky world of deception and a complex plot involving murder, corruption and stolen jewels... Crammed full of adventure, romance, comedy and, of course, one or two rather brilliant deductions, this faithful adaptation will combine original live music, high-energy theatricality and ensemble storytelling.

Director Nick Lane commented: “I don’t think I know anyone over the age of ten who doesn’t know at least the name Sherlock Holmes. He is part of the literary fabric of this country - hugely popular and hugely adaptable - and his cases with Watson are a blueprint for so many crime novels, films, TV shows and theatre. We have approached this adaptation in a stylised way which will appeal to avid fans of the novel, as well as those who simply want to come to the theatre and enjoy a rattling good crime story!” Suitable for ages 11+ Performances: Monday 28 & Tuesday 29 January 7.30pm (Tuesday Matinee at 2.30pm). Tickets: £16 (Discounts for Concessions and Students), available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com and via the Box Office: 01403 750220

The Ho Ho Ho Christmas Show kicks off at The Capitol

You’ll get into the festive spirit as you head to Santa’s Workshop

to meet Steve the Elf. He’s busy preparing everything

for Santa in time for Christmas Eve. There are presents to wrap and reindeer to feed, and he needs help from the audience to get it all done before the big night. At last, Santa returns to the workshop to see all the good work and his faithful elf learns the true meaning of Christmas. After each performance, every child from the audience will be able to meet Santa Claus and receive a special gift for Christmas! There’s even a chance for parents to put their children’s names on the ‘nice list’ for a special mention in the show. A great introduction to theatre for little ones, as it is a shorter show and the studio is cosy. There is also a SEND performance on Thursday 20 December designed for families who may benefit from a more relaxed atmosphere, with the house lights left up and no loud noises. Performance: Friday 14 December until Monday 24 December in the Capitol Studio Horsham. Tickets: Available online: www. thecapitolhorsham.com and via the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

College Grove is a development we’ve been very excited to launch calendar of events throughout the year, including The Easter Piazza Italia featuring, amongst other attractions, a spectacular display of Italian cars and the annual district-wide Food and

Drink Festival in September. For families wishing to raise their children outside of London, College Grove is a worthy option to consider. Additionally, College Grove is suitable for buyers looking to upsize and take their next steps on the property ladder. Minnie Dando, Head of Marketing at Hyde New Homes, commented: “College Grove is a development we’ve been very excited to launch – there is huge demand for family homes on the commuter belt for London, and Horsham couldn’t be a better location to return to after a busy day or week in the City. It offers residents a rural setting to unwind and relax in, and we’re looking forward to revealing the show home in the New Year to showcase the quality specification each house comes with.” The first phase of three - and four - bedroom homes at College Grove will launch in January, with prices starting at £499,995 for a three-bedroom house and £675,000 for a four-bedroom house. Visitors will be able to view a fully dressed show home on site. Buyers can register their interest to get a VIP invite to the opening of this unique development by calling Sales Agent Savills on 0808 208 5130 or alternatively can visit www. collegegrove.co.uk.

Southwater award show heralds new ground Photos by Bryan Streeter

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Southwater Cricket Club is looking forward to playing at their new, purpose build ground next season - further up Church Lane towards Bonfire Hill, opposite the church. And, to celebrate their last season at the much loved old ground, they held an awards night and social evening in the clubhouse, affectionately known as “The Shed”. Following the AGM players, officials and members of the club sat down to curry or chilli, and played pub games in the club’s always convivial atmosphere accompanying the

Last Saturday Horsham once again showed that they are capable of playing just as well as higher table opposition – better at times – only for some soft goals to prevent harvesting any points. The game began with an immediate London Academicals attack, which Horsham keeper Nick Evans cleared for a short corner, pushed away for another and promptly banged in, putting LA ahead in the second minute. Horsham nearly levelled the score eight minutes later with a short corner of their own, which was initially blocked before Sean Pearcy hit the crossbar with a backhander, but LA then doubled their advantage when the ball was somehow scrambled in. Joey Humphreys then launched a foray ahead of Zac Chinn embarking on a long run to give Humphreys a further opportunity, but his fierce backhander went straight at the visiting keeper. Another excellent Horsham build up followed, Humphreys earning Horsham’s third short, which was fired wide – the same fate befalling LA’s short right on the break. The game resumed in semi darkness, accompanied by persistent drizzle, but home spirits were lifted when Chas

Richardson reduced the deficit soon after the restart. With Horsham pressing hard LA’s giant keeper – six foot six and wide with it – foiled an attack and a subsequent short corner. Then, at the other end, a failed Horsham clearance gave Evans no chance of preventing LA from going 3-1 up. LA then broke through, but, in a one on one opportunity, were off target, but, when a further incursion was not effectively negated LA scored again. Three Horsham shorts followed in quick succession, the prone keeper unfurling his extraordinary reach to deny the hosts. Horsham, though, did claw back a goal when Tim Upchurch scored in a goal mouth melee, and they almost added another but the ball was eventually cleared, and, with just five minutes left, LA successfully held out to win 4-2, Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell telling the District Post: “I’m beginning to sound like a cracked record! We had three times as many shots as them, playing the better hockey, but losing because we gave away some silly goals again. And, their massive keeper read the game so well, making it difficult to get round him.” Horsham go into their Christmas and New Year break tenth in the table, two points behind Staines, six above penultimate club Woking and ten above bottom club Slough, who are yet to break their duck. Horsham’s next league game is on Saturday January 12th, with a visit to Tulse Hill and Dulwich.

John Mickel’s unique fifth Legend’s title – TV coverage

Motor racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last month Faygate racing driver John Mickel made history by becoming the first person to win five Legends’ titles, clinching the crown at an iconic track – Brands Hatch, one of his favourite circuits. John is no stranger to silverware – the trophies he has won are

threatening to take over his home, and he will be back racing next season, quipping:“Until the will disappears, I fully intend to keep going … although I’m not getting any younger!” Meanwhile, motor racing fans have the opportunity to see John’s exploits in the Legends Cars National Championship around the tracks this season - at the wheel of his trademark orange K-Seal sponsored 1934 Ford replica

Horsham third after another impressive display in Kent

Photos by John Lines

The Bostik League – South East Division Saturday December 8 – Hythe Town 2 4 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Trips to Kent have not always been happy occasions for Horsham, but this season they have enjoyed going to the hop county – having previously beaten Sevenoaks and Ashford and drawn at Ramsgate, the Hornets eventually overwhelmed Hythe Town last Saturday, increasing this season’s points tally in Kent to 10 out of a possible 12.

Sport

And, just for good measure, Horsham recently beat two other Kent sides at Lancing - VCD Athletic and Whitstable, both 4-0, winning this term’s six Kentish encounters 17-5 on aggregate. The trip to fifth-placed Hythe’s Reachfields Stadium was potentially challenging considering their formidable home record (unbeaten this year), but, on Horsham’s first foray away from Lancing and on grass for almost five weeks, two goals in each half were more than sufficient to secure victory, moving them up to third. Horsham took command early on, brushing aside a midgame wobble to cruise home back

on top. And, they got off to the best possible start when Tyrell Richardson-Brown put them ahead in the fourth minute from Rob O’Toole’s supply. Hythe responded with improved occupation, but, after Charlie Harris and Richardson-Brown had unfulfilled opportunities, Jack Brivio covered some ground to fire past Hythe keeper Ryan Nicholls, giving Horsham a two goal lead in driving rain with 20 minutes on the clock. Harvey Sparks, Brivio and O’Toole all then troubled the home defence, but Hythe clawed back a goal when the dangerous Ansah scored his 24th of the season, high over Josh Pelling’s head, with the hosts’ first real strike. Harris and Brivio then tested Nicholls, but the score remained 2-1 in the Hornets’ favour at the break. Horsham resumed brightly, but possibilities came and went - for both sides – until, just after the hour mark, Aikhionbare managed to get the ball in from close quarters to level the score. Campbell and Kisitu brought up the hat trick of Hythe bookings, along with Daly’s earlier card, and Nicholls had to be at his best to keep Richardson-Brown at bay, despite the slippery conditions making adept ball handling hazardous. With both teams pressing for all three points, Aikhionbare was mercifully off target before Joe Shelley found his way into the ref’s book, but he made amends by instigating a move that culminated with Daly generously diverting the ball in for Horsham’s third. When Jack Sammoulis was sanctioned for fouling O’Toole, Harris stepped up, blasting a 30 yarder past the helpless Nicholls in defiance of the appalling conditions. Subs Lee Harding and Chris Smith did their best to rub salt in Hythe’s wounds but Nicholls prevented further damage as the travelling Hornets’ supporters rejoiced in another excellent Horsham performance. After the mid week game at lower-table Three Bridges, on Saturday Horsham have a tough fixture – against another Kent side – current leaders Cray Wanderers.

Last ditch goal eliminates Horsham from Snr Cup Tuesday December 4 - Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Horsham 0 1 Eastbourne Borough Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Frustratingly, Horsham’s cup dreams are over for another season after they again contained a higher league outfit – for all but the last few moments, despite having only 10 men for the bulk of the second half – only to be shaded by the cruel single goal of the game at the very death. Vanarama National League South’s Eastbourne Borough’s, cruel 93 minute goal was all the more devastating because earlier in the season the Hornets also lost by a goal to Poole Town in the FA Cup and Bath City in the FA Trophy. The kick off against Eastbourne Borough – who had a 37 place advantage in the standings - was put back by quarter of an hour after seven players, including five from Horsham were held up in heavy traffic. Borough almost went ahead in the fifth minute, but Tobi Adebayo-Rowling shot mercifully wide. Horsham, produced a corresponding opportunity when Steve Metcalf, in his 100th appearance for the club, latched onto Charlie Harris’ pass to engage Harvey Sparks, but the move ended in disappointment. Hornets’ keeper Josh Pelling then safely gathered a Borough attempt, before the visitors launched further unsuccessful attacks. Then, Kieran Lavery, on loan from Dorking Wanderers, spearheaded a build up involving – against his former club – Harris, and Lee Harding,

but, when the ball came back to Lavery his shot was blocked. With Horsham in the ascendance, Sparks tested Mark Smith in the Borough goal before Harding ballooned over the bar. In the ensuing rain a Borough foray fizzled out ahead of Pelling dropping onto a potentially dangerous ball and, when action switched to the other end, George Hayward’s shot was deflected for an unfulfilled corner. With shots at either end, both keepers had to be at their best, and Borough should have taken the lead but headed over from very close range. In added time Rob O’Toole was through and clear, but Smith intervened at the end of the even, wellfought, but goal-less first half. Resuming, Eastbourne Borough forced a diving save from Pelling, who then fielded a high ball, and, with Horsham creating opportunities, Harding and O’Toole’s pressure failed to produce a goal. Harris was then off target and between Horsham substitutions, Lavery was contentiously sent off in response to an adjudged dangerous tackle. Chances abounded for both sides, yet the status quo still persisted, Horsham being reprieved courtesy of the benign crossbar, until they thought they had won the game in the 89th minute when Sparks crashed home, but his supplier, Hoare, had been ruled offside. Extra time beckoned, but Borough were not quite done and, three minutes into extra time, Lloyd Dawes ran into the area to get the ball past the prayer-less Pelling, breaking Horsham’s hearts, leaving the Hornets to concentrate on their league aspirations.

YMCA stay top after gritty draw with high flying Newhaven Saturday December 8 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 0 Newhaven Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter With Horsham YMCA top and Newhaven third, and both sides wanting to maintain momentum, but determined not to concede, spectators witnessed a goal-less stalemate – played in substantial periods of heavy rain, but with plenty of action despite the inhospitable conditions.

YM were several players light, with Callum Donaghey and Ollie Gill sitting out one match suspensions, Tom Gilbert long term injured, Dan Mobsby and Sam Schaaf unavailable and others nursing knocks of varying severity. An early YM attack was turned away for a corner before, at the other end, Aaron Jeal rushed out of his goal and was committed, but the ball was harmlessly cleared. A second YM corner landed on the roof of the net and, following end to end play, Dean Bown trapped, swivelled and fired over. A Newhaven strike then skewed to the corner flag ahead of

another YM corner and free kick, but Newhaven were also pressing and YM skipper for the day, Dean Carden blocked an attack and Jeal safely gathered shots from lively centre forward Lee Robinson, and Kyle Woolven, and caught the visitors’ first corner. With action switching back to YM another corner came and went and Alex Malins, returning to the club, unleashed a long range blast, just off target, half time arriving after YM’s fifth corner was negated. The second half began with Tony Nwachukwu skimming the bar, but Newhaven were getting

further forward, earning five more corners, intervened by Jeal latching onto two close range headers. YM were finding it difficult to mount attacks, but gradually worked their way back into the game, a Luke Gedling set piece from just outside the area being just too high. YM had a final corner bang on full time, booted over from close range, but both sides were relieved to settle for a share of the points, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “Because of our missing players we were forced to change our formation, so, all things considered, we’ll settle for that

result – they put five players at the back, which made it difficult for us. We’ve got another big game on Saturday – against current runners up Chichester City at Gorings Mead - and should have more players at our disposal.” YM remain top with 43 points from 18 games, while Chichester – who beat Shoreham - and Newhaven, each with a game in hand, have 40 and 39 respectively. At the foot of the table, Loxwood, boosted by a win against Little Common, have 11 points, nine more than beleaguered Eastbourne United.
