Horsham Churches Together brave weather to bring Christmas cheer to Horsham Town On the coldest and wettest day of the week, children and families experienced the true meaning of Christmas in Horsham’s town centre on Saturday (15 December) at Horsham Churches Together’s free Christmas Event. The Children’s Musical Nativity took place at the Carfax Bandstand led by Little Notes. Mark and Lou Bradbury and band orchestrated a lively retelling of the Nativity story. Children and families watched and real nativity characters acted to form a Nativity tableau in front of the Carfax Bandstand. The donkey played a starring role, as did the pantomime camel! Despite the heavy rain, children and families started off on the Nativity Trail determined to have their Passports stamped at each of the Nativity Trail locations. Mary and Joseph were waiting at the Carfax Amphitheatre with the Bethlehem backdrop alongside the very popular donkey from Dashing Donkeys. The shepherds with real sheep were handing out candy canes in the Forum. At the Bishopric, children collected Happy Birthday Jesus balloons and saw a manger containing baby Jesus and a pier-style Nativity Scene. At Market Square, three wise men gave out chocolate coins. To mirror the journey taken by the children, they were all given

a book called ‘The Very Greatest Journey’ published by The Bible Society, and a wooden Christmas tree hanging decoration of the Nativity scene as a prize for completing the trail. While the Trail was taking place, spectators enjoyed the Christmas Concert on the Carfax Bandstand, listening to the Rock Choir, Liezel Brink-McCulloch, Living Faith Assembly Choir, St Mary’s Primary School children and St Mary’s Church Choir. Participants greatly appreciated the mulled drinks and biscuits that were provided at the welcome hub. Unfortunately, due to the adverse weather conditions the Carol Service at the Carfax Bandstand was cancelled, but people are encouraged to go along to one of the many church services taking place in Horsham Churches Together churches over Christmas. Horsham Churches Together is very grateful to the many people who took part in Saturday’s Christmas Event despite the weather conditions. Thank you also to partners who supported the event: Coden Events (Horsham General Market), Dashing Donkeys, Food Rocks (Horsham Markets), Mr and Mrs Harwood of Faygate, High Gain Event Services, Horsham District Council,

across England

NHS England has announced that all patients across England can now access general practice appointments in the evening and weekends. The extended access means that patients will be able to see a doctor, nurse, or other member of the practice team, at a time convenient to them – providing an estimated nine million extra appointments per year. The weekend and evening service is available across the country, more than three months ahead of schedule, and will help ease pressures on the NHS as temperatures drop. NHS England has started a communications campaign for the run up to Christmas to ensure patients are aware of the evening and weekend appointments. Dominic Hardy, NHS England’s Director of Primary Care Delivery, said: “Strengthening general practice is an importantpart of the NHS long term plan and local health services have worked hard to ensure patients have access to our excellent general practice services right across the country. Because of this hard work, we have been able to make these extra appointments available months ahead of schedule and before winter really starts. “As well as offering convenience and choice to patients, it will help to reduce some of the pressure on general practice and A&Es, and ease some of the wider system pressures we saw last winter.” On top of the extended access services, strengthening general practice and primary care is a key part of the forthcoming NHS Long

Term Plan, and at least £3.5 billion more in real terms will be invested in primary medical and community services, which will also improve access to weekday ‘in hours’ services. Recent figures show there are now 5,321 more primary health professionals working in primary care than three years ago. That exceeds NHS England’s target of an additional 5,000 by 2020 set out in the General Practice Forward View. Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: “GPs across the country are going above and beyond to ensure we can deliver good, safe care for our patients under intense resource and workforce pressures. “All practices in England now offer some form of extended access to routine GP services, and they will have tailored these to the needs of their local population. “We are preparing for a very busy winter in general practice. Our patients should always be able to access GP services if they become ill, either through our routine service, or the GP out of hours service - but we would also encourage patients to think about whether they really need to see a GP, or whether selfcare or visiting a pharmacist are options in the first instance.” Extended appointments will either be available through designated local NHS services and in some cases a patient’s own GP practice. The service is being publicised through national press and broadcast to ensure patients are aware of the extra appointments. It has proved popular in areas where the evening and weekend appointments were first trialled. In Herefordshire, for example, more than nine in ten appointments were used by patients in August. In London, where these services have been in place for 18 months, almost three quarters of appointments are taken up. Evening and weekend appointments will be offered in addition to other services, such as out of hours GPs and NHS 111, that offer access to clinicians at any time day or night.

Music to their ears: 4 lucky winners pick up prizes from our recent competition with Music for All Four lucky competition winners attended the offices of local charity, Music For All on Thursday December 19th to collect their prizes. Ed Cozens, Daniella Alston, Jodie Munday and Mat Cooke were presented with their new instruments and musical equipment after entering a competition ran by The District Post and Music for All. Following a brief presentation I got to speak with Ed and Daniella about their win, Ed a pupil at Forest school was delighted with his prize, a promising Clarinet player, He chose the Tenor Sax after being inspired by seeing the West Sussex Big Band play at a concert where he was performing with The West Sussex Youth Wind Orchestra, music is very much Ed’s life and feels this prize, “Will make a huge difference” as he aims to complete

a music A level at Collyers after he finishes his GCSE’s before heading on to University to further develop his aspirations. I asked him about what inspired him to pick up an instrument in the first place and he was quick to say, “At primary school we were all given the chance to play and it was just the key to music for me, it is now probably my favourite thing to do.” Daniella isn’t a player of any instrument herself, this prize was for her Daughter who she felt would get life changing inspiration from such a prize. 13year old Tayla, throughout the past year , has bravely fought depression, helped her Mum tackle Cancer, endured a Parental split and moved from Hong Kong to the UK, now she hopes this new keyboard will bring a huge smile to her face.

Daniella feels that this prize is something that will benefit Tayla not just now but in later life too, “Music will help her achieve so much,” said Daniella as we spoke about what aspirations Tayla may have, “She started writing music but had nothing to play it on, she would just hum a tune, write down what the tune would sound like and then add words. This win just opens so many doors for her.” Tayla will be returning home from school, unaware that the instrument she has dreamed of will be hiding in her bedroom, unaware that Mum entered a competition to thank her Daughter for her support but to also give her the opportunity to begin fulfiling a dream. Of course none of this would be possible without the incredible work from the team at Music For All led by Paul McManus.

Top retail Winter Wonderland window display winners announced From over 40 independent retail businesses who entered this year’s Christmas Window Wonderland competition, six winning Christmas themed window displays have been announced as winners. The overall District winner is Sienna Rocks Christmas Shop in Swan Walk Shopping Centre, Horsham. Best in town winners are: Hamilton Cole in Pulborough, Park Brown Opticians in Billingshurst, Gris et Blanc in Steyning, The Village Deli in Storrington, and Hamfields in Henfield. The Window Wonderland promotion was organised by Horsham District Council to make visits to the District’s market towns and villages more enjoyable and rewarding for Christmas shoppers this year. Commenting on the competition, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Gordon Lindsay said: “I am delighted that so many

local independent retailers took part in our Christmas display promotion from across the whole District. “Our excellent selection of independent retailers are always a real attraction for shoppers and these high standard displays really do add to the overall customer experience. “My congratulations go to all the entrants who created some stunning and inviting window displays, attracting shoppers to stop, look and pop in to the stores.” The promotion forms part of the Council’s retail training and support programme – ‘Your Customer Experience’ – for independent retailers. Chris Billington of Progressive Results Training, who is helping to deliver the Your Customer Experience skills programme for the Council, formed part of the judging panel. He selected a winning display in each town based on criteria covered in a module of

the course programme. Commenting on the awards Chris Billington said: “Judging all of the entries for this year’s Windows Wonderland in the Horsham District has been a real pleasure for me. I have been so impressed with the level of professionalism and fun elements that have been used in order to put a smile on the customers face. “I know it has been a tough year for High Street retail, and constant media coverage of this hasn’t made retailers feel any more positive. However, at what is the busiest time of year for the High Street, everyone has made a sterling effort, clearly telling us all that we retailers still love our customers and will do everything possible to be here for them in the future. “I personally would like to thank everyone who entered for their enthusiasm; judging to find winners was very difficult, they were all excellent!”

‘The Nutcracker’ by De Braam Academy at Farlington School: The Review by Lucy Cooper

From the first notes of the score for ‘The Nutcracker’ Ballet by Tchaikovsky, the audience was transported by this beautifully interpreted story. Street children enviously watch arrangements for the Christmas party until they are shooed away by the maids. Inside, guests arrive, including Uncle Drosselmeyer who gives Clara a strange Nutcracker doll. Natasha Pennington, dancing exquisitely on pointe, was born to play Clara. Rosie Pitts-Tucker was splendid as Clara’s jealous brother, Fritz. Amelie Holloway, Amy Crouch, Lucia RodriguesCano and Kitty Sheppard danced impressively accomplished robotic movements as mechanical dolls. Grandpa and Grandma, played by Millie and Ella Jones, continue the dancing with their

comic turn until everyone leaves and Millie Jewry, the kindly mother, ushers Clara and Fritz to bed. Prep 1 and 2 children obviously enjoyed their scurrying movements as the Mice. At midnight, the Spirit of the Night, beautifully danced by Lauren Bude, summons her Night Shadows and Clara is transported to a fantasy world where her Nutcracker comes to life. Kira Hyde as the Nutcracker was superb. Her dancing is technically excellent, and she played the part of supporting partner with grace and charm. The Snow Queen, danced with joyful abandon by Millie Jones, leads Clara and the Nutcracker through Snowflakes to the Land of Sweets where Angels, whirling Prep 3s and 5s, introduce them

to the Sugar Plum Fairy, ably danced on pointe by a poised Alberta Dale. A variety of sweets dancing in different styles are introduced, including ‘Turkish Delight’- a very flexible trio: Lilyella Paul, Naomi Milner-Smith and Jemyma Dawson-Cantelo. Clara awakes under the Christmas tree wondering if it was all a dream. Natalie van de Braam has surpassed herself. Costumes were stunning and the choreography, set and lighting added to the professional whole. To manage a cast of over fifty pupils, helped by an extremely able backstage team, is impressive and this ballet will provide memories for all involved for years to come.

Plaistow Pre-School Christmas Nativity

Plaistow village hall was bustling with excitement on Sunday 9 December, as parents, grandparents and siblings gathered to watch Plaistow Pre-School’s charming Nativity play. The children, aged between 2-4 years old, arrived in costume as shepherds, angels,

soldiers and innkeepers and sat patiently waiting for Mary to arrive in style, on the back of a donkey! Carol Krol the lead practitioner, led the children through the play as they confidently delivered their lines, sang Christmas songs and carols and joined in enthusiasti-

cally with the actions. At the end of the Nativity the audience all enjoyed festive refreshments of mulled wine and homemade mince pies whilst vying for the prizes in a generously donated raffle, all raising much appreciated funds for the charity-run village pre-school.

West Sussex Music Invites You to Play Musical Chairs “Help us support, quite literally, our young musicians”

The Horsham-based charity, West Sussex Music, is extending an open invitation to people and businesses across West Sussex to participate in a county-wide game of Musical Chairs, in order to help equip its young musicians with chairs specifically designed for orchestral use. The only game of musical chairs where people are encouraged to add a chair, not take it away, the initiative aims to provide members of the West Sussex Youth Orchestra, who are based at The College of Richard Collyer in Horsham, with 100 chairs that have been specifically designed with the performance, comfort and well-being of the musician in mind; providing optimal support and flexibility, as well as promoting easier breathing and freedom of movement. “Since most of our ensemble musicians spend their time rehearsing and performing while seated, the chair becomes a crucial piece of equipment.” Explained West Sussex Music Chief Executive, James Underwood, “The chairs we currently use were never intended for musicians and as such don’t promote the proper alignment or freedom of motion necessary for

prolonged periods of orchestral use. It would be fantastic to be able to equip our young musicians, and future generations, with chairs that support them better and allow them to get the most from their abilities. ”£200 will purchase a chair and it is hoped that some donors may wish to fund more than one; perhaps an entire section of the orchestra! Donors can also have a plaque for the chair with their name on it.” The chairs will be used not only by West Sussex Youth Orchestra and other Horsham Music Centre ensembles, but also by Horsham Symphony Orchestra and the National Children’s Orchestra, both of which are now based at Horsham Music Centre. Chairs can be bought by individuals, businesses or collectively by groups of donors. Visit www.westsussexmusic.co.uk to make a donation and help support the county’s young musicians. D.W. Nye to expand its premises

D.W. Nye has started major expansion works at its Kingsfold depot, near Horsham. The independent Sussex builders’ merchant, which has levelled sections of its storage area to make way for the new facilities, will be adding a brand new warehouse and office facility to cater for its growing customer base. The steel framed structure will provide 1000m2 of warehouse space – more than doubling the size of the business’s existing facility – allowing it to stock one of the most extensive product lines in the region, in even greater quantities.

Rex Nye, who is Managing Director at D.W. Nye, said: “Our expansion reflects the growing success of the business and the continued support from our loyal customers who rely on us to supply a vast range of materials and tools for their projects, from stone paving to timber. This is an important step in our 30-year history, and represents one of the biggest developments of our depot since we first opened our doors all those years ago.” Construction on D.W. Nye’s new premises is due to be completed in spring 2019.

Christmas-A season of goodwill....and divorce?

Whilst Christmas and New Year is meant to be the season of goodwill to all men and women, it seems that doesn’t work for everybody. For some it can mean the end of a relationship. According to Alex Mancini, Head of Family Law at Horsham solicitors Mancini Legal, the first week of January is known as ‘Divorce Week’ as so many people turn up in solicitors’ offices to start new divorce proceedings after a festive break-up. In general, the divorce rate in the UK is falling, in large part due to

fewer couples actually getting married. Yet an amazingly high 42% of marriages in England and Wales still end up that way. Equally surprising, the average marriage that ends in divorce only lasts eleven and a half years. Nobody who says ‘I do’ is planning to get divorced, yet so often it just goes wrong. In 2016 (the latest stats from the ONS) there were 106,959 divorces of opposite-sex couples. Same-sex divorce is a recent but increasing phenomenon.

FREE FAMILY LAW ADVICE CLINIC IN CRAWLEY AND HORSHAM We offer a free 30 minute consultation at our family law advice clinic every Tuesday 1pm – 4pm, covering: • Divorce, separation and finances • Children matters (contact and residence arrangements) • Cohabitation disputes where couples are unmarried • Consent Orders • Options available on the breakdown marriage or civil partnership • Prenuptial agreements By appointment only. IF IT HAPPENS TO YOU, YOU’RE GOING TO NEED A LAWYER Marriage is a contract but one in which lawyers are generally not involved – the exception being the increasing trend for a ‘pre-nup’, generally for a second marriage. The contract may be made in a church, in front of a registrar, or equally these days in a romantic hotel or beauty spot. But it is still binding and if a time comes when you want to get out of it, you’re going to need a lawyer. MOST DIVORCES ARE CONTENTIOUS It’s rarely a simple situation as Alex Mancini knows from experience. ‘While many couples start off trying to keep it on friendly terms, the break-up of a marriage can be every bit as passionate as the love that kindled it,’ he says. ‘Feelings run high on both sides but, as with most things legal, there are two sides to every story.’ He makes the point that it’s a very personal issue where lawyers need to be non-judgemental and supportive for both female and male clients. If this Christmas throws up a relationship issue that you feel might require a legal settlement, Mancini Legal offers a first consultation free of charge. Warnham gym takes shape under new ownership Tucked away in Warnham is a hidden gem of the local community. Bodywise gym has been helping people with their fitness and well being needs for some time but it wasn’t until March of this year that Aida Pecelyte took on the business and began making it her own. A qualified yoga teacher, Aida is keen to give people opportunities to further themselves both physically and mentally. It is with this in mind that she invited me to a Yoga class. I apprehensively agreed and would eventually find myself attempting a humble warrior, a downward dog and a child’s pose. We are soon underway and its reassuring to know that Aida gives very detailed step by step instructions to ensure you do not miss anything. For a total beginner this is great to hear as to execute some of these manouvores isn’t easy, we progress through the array of positions and I notice the speed increases a little, its safe to say this is where I thought I would come unstuck, it was not the case though as Aida came to assist me with alternate positions I could try that allowed me to still take part in the class and not just wait for them to finish. One thing that struck me was the level of understanding between tutor and pupil. The names of some Yoga positions aren’t the type that just roll off the tongue so when I didn’t understand what was being taught it was instantly explained to me with simple directions of what I should be doing. After we finish Aida and I have a chat about yoga and the gym itself. A dream that began some time ago when she worked at Bodywise whilst it was under previous ownership became a reality and work soon began. Disappointed with how the classes she taught under the previous management were going due to lack of investment and equipment, Aida soon ensured that all clients could be looked after equally and that it would be a comfortable, pleasant environment for all. It certainly generates that effect as we wander through the building that is deceptively large once inside. Housing a gym, an Osteopaths, a pole fitness studio, a salon, a sports therapist and two additional rooms one of which is soon to become a semipermanent makeup studio and the other, Aida hopes, will host a local tattoo artist. The gym is well furnished and investment continues as Aida kits it out with more and more equipment. With 21 different classes currently held, all aspects of the gym are fully utilised and for those wishing to work with a personal trainer as well there are options there too. A team of freelance PT’s work alongside 2 full time trainers meaning that each member has the chance to learn from someone with full knowledge of the world of health

and fitness. With the array of rooms available and most being used I asked Aida what happens in the Yoga studio when her classes aren’t running, “We have Sharon that teaches dance, she has been a here for years and teaches jazz, tap and ballet, we also have HIIT kettlebells, Zumba, boxing, Pilates classes and small group of 6 PT sessions” It is evident that at Bodywise, what ever your choice of approach to fitness you are going to be catered for, whether you are new to gyms or just like to keep yourself fit throughout retirement the team have ensured there is something for you. One aspect that Aida is particularly proud of is the 80+ club, “ On Mondays we host Pilates for our 80+ group, our oldest participant is a 92 year old man and he loves it, some of them also enjoy the gym for the cardio equipment and even weights!” When our tour has finished we take a seat in the reception area which is gradually turning into a self serve cafe, it’s now that I ask Aida about what her motivation to go from A commuter with a computer to a business owner was, “At 36, I had an epiphany, I read a book by Matthew Syed “Bounce” that said you do not need to have talent or be specifically gifted to succeed in life, I found that I was doing the same thing every day and it just hit me that I could help myself and others. I really feel the book inspired me to become a trainer.”

With the new goal set Aida maintained her full time job working in IT and took on a part time job at weekends enabling her to learn about personal training, “ The part time job then needed someone to fill a particular role and it involved going on a yoga course, I set myself the challenge of 3 months to learn as much as possible and within that 3 months I got my yoga qualification.” Then I went on intensive training to Mexico followed by the training in India to become fully qualified Hatha Vinyasa Yoga teacher. With the gym improving with new equipment and the availability of holistic classes like various types of yoga and Pilates for different fitness levels and age groups growing, there are plans to alter the opening hours to match the demand of the local community, especially those who work from 9-5pm “We currently open at 8.30am and close at 9pm Monday through to Saturday but we submitted to Horsham District Council that we wished to open at 6am, closing at 10pm and opening on Sundays. It has been met by some objections so we sent a new proposal in with an opening of 6.30 - 9:30pm Mon to Sat and Sundays 9:00 - 5:00pm . The meeting is scheduled for February so we will wait and see.” If you are interested in knowing more about the gym, yoga or any of the other great opportunities for you at bodywise, call the team on 01403 271698 or visit www. thebodywisegym.co.uk

Saturday Night Fever comes to The Hawth

Richard Winsor, highly acclaimed for his dance, stage and screen work, is set to play Tony Manero, the role which famously rocketed John Travolta to screen stardom, in a new stage production of Saturday Night Fever. As a dancer, Richard Winsor hardly needs introduction: principle dancer with Matthew Bourne for ten years, he has starred around the world, leading Bourne’s celebrated production of Swan Lake, as well as Dorian Gray, Edward

Scissorhands, The Car Man and Play Without Words. He landed the lead role in cult dance movie StreetDance 3D and was snapped up by the BBC to play Caleb Knight in flagship medical drama Casualty, a role in which he gripped audiences for over three years until his dramatic exit last year, which shocked the star’s millions of fans as he lost his life in a knife fight. This hotly anticipated new musical production, coming to The Hawth Crawley in January 2019,

sees Richard Winsor take on his first leading role in a major musical, and, his first stage appearance since Casualty. 40 years since its famous UK cinema release, Saturday Night Fever is a reimagined and revitalised music and dance spectacular. Saturday Night Fever tells the story of Tony Manero, and his reckless, yet thrilling road to dancing success. The musical features the Bee Gees’ greatest hits including Stayin’ Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, Night Fever and Tragedy as well as ‘70s favourites Boogie Shoes, Disco Inferno and, for the first time, will feature a group playing the Bee Gees live on stage. While paying homage to the movie, this new stage version promises more drama, more music and hot new choreography. It is directed and produced by Bill Kenwright, with choreography by Olivier Award winning Bill Deamer, designs by Gary McCaan, lighting by Nick Richings, and sound by Dan Samson. The stage adaptation is by Robert Stigwood in collaboration with Bill Oakes. Performance: Tuesday 15 - Saturday 19 January 7.30pm, & Wed, Thur & Sat 2.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. A Christmas Wish List from a Very Special Camel at Drusillas Park

Lofty the Bactrian Camel has been a very good boy this year, so keepers at Drusillas Park in Alfriston, East Sussex, put aside some time

in their busy schedules to go through his Christmas wish list. Deputy Head Keeper, Sophie Leadbitter, said: “Lofty is just 4

years old and is celebrating his 4th Christmas at the park this year! We have spent some time going through his Christmas list to see if there is anything in particular we can ask Santa to bring him on the big day!” “Lofty is a big fan of sweet potato, so this was top of his Christmas wish list. We will be here on Christmas day to make sure he and all of the animals get the special Christmas lunch they deserve.” Alongside the camels, the sloths, meerkats, penguins and squirrel monkeys have all written their Christmas lists to send to Santa, including a lot of grubs, a few sprats and plenty of sweetcorn! Although the Park is shut to the public from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, the zoo team will be working away throughout the holidays to ensure all the animals are clean and comfortable. Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open daily from 10am (with the exception of December 24, 25 and 26 – Drusillas reopens on 27 December). For more information, please telephone 01323 874100 or visit the website www.drusillas.co.uk

Mon 31 December, 2.45pm Richard Balcombe Conductor Ilona DomnIch Soprano Richard Balcombe makes a welcome return to Brighton as guest conductor for the Brighton Phil’s annual Viennese Gala, joined by the Russian-born soprano Ilona Domnich whose lyric coloratura will add sparkle to our afternoon with a selection of delightful songs and arias from well-known operettas and musicals from the 19th century and beyond. This is always one of our most popular concerts of the season and, now in its 29th year, is firmly established as part of the city’s festivities. We nearly sold out last year so if you would like to join us to see out the old year and welcome in the new, book your tickets now to avoid disappointment! Originally destined to be a pianist, Ilona was plucked from a masterclass by legendary singing teacher Vera Rósza, and won the prestigious Wingate Scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music. She was chosen by Opera Now Magazine as one of their top

ten high flying sopranos destined to have impressive careers, in which a personal highlight has been a masterclass with Montserrat Caballé. Ilona is also an actress and has developed and performed a one woman show based on songs sung by Marlene Dietrich, Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf. As you would expect this concert will be full of musical gems from the waltz kings of Vienna – the Strauss family – with an array of waltzes, marches and polkas from this talented musical dynasty who dominated the music scene in Vienna throughout the 19th century. Alongside these evergreen favourites Richard Balcombe has also included songs by Ivor Novello and Oscar Straus (no relation), Charmaine (made famous by Mantovani) and the Westminster Waltz by Robert Farnon. The full concert programme is available at: www. brightonphil.org.uk/concerts We are most grateful to the John Carewe Brighton Orchestra Trust for their continued support of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra

Phil Collins is one of the most successful recording artists of all time – a string of worldwide number one albums and singles resulted in multi-million sales and a succession of prestigious music industry awards during his 40-year career. In fact, Collins is one of only three artists to have sold over 100 million albums as a solo artist and as part of a band – the others being Sir Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. When, in March 2011, Phil Collins

announced his retirement, it led many to re-evaluate his considerable musical legacy. So much so that it brought him out of retirement in 2017 to perform a short series of shows across Europe to his fans, both old and new. It’s unlikely to be a permanent return to the stage for Phil but, fortunately, No Jacket Required - the UK’s leading Phil Collins tribute - is continuing to perform his music in their faithful recreation of his live shows. No Jacket Required frontman, Dave Whitehouse said: “It’s a real

pleasure and privilege to perform such great music. There’s so much to choose from, it’s hard to decide what to leave out of our shows!” Formed in 2002, the band has performed all over the country as well as overseas, to appreciative full houses. Prior to that, Dave spent five years in a Genesis tribute, making him the UK’s most established Phil Collins tribute artist. The band clearly takes its work seriously and has seen Collins perform on over 30 occasions, in order to hone their take on the superstar singing drummer. Whitehouse even met Phil Collins prior to one of his arena shows in Germany, while in preparation for a show he performed later in Luxembourg: “He was extremely generous with his time and wished me well for my show. It was a special moment and great to be able to thank him for the pleasure his music has given me and so many others”. When you look back at the catalogue of hits, it’s easy to see why the voice of Phil Collins provided a constant soundtrack to the 1980s and early 1990s. Collins came from behind his drum kit to take on vocal duties in Genesis forty years ago for their 1976 album ‘A Trick Of The Tail’, following the departure of Peter Gabriel. ‘Follow You Follow Me’

became the band’s breakthrough hit in 1978 and was to become the first of 20 Top 10 hits by either Phil Collins or Genesis over the next 20 years. The music has enduring appeal and saw the Genesis ‘R-Kive’ compilation reach the Top 10 of the UK album charts on its release at the end of 2014. When Phil announced that he was coming out of retirement for a short series of shows in June 2017, tickets sold out within a matter of minutes. So what can you expect from the UK’s leading Phil Collins tribute? Dave has the answer: “A No Jacket Required show lasts over two hours and we perform all the hits plus a few lesser-known album tracks. Our line-up replicates Phil’s own live shows – we are an 11-piece band with a full brass section and backing vocalists. While the emphasis is on the music, it’s also a live spectacle and we all have a lot of fun. Our audience is made up of all ages, from 8 to 80 – there’s something for everyone in our shows”. Performance: Friday 11 January, 7.30pm at The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £24.00, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth. co.uk.

Miller Homes helps Horsham Tigers get their stripes

Miller Homes Southern is helping local football club, Horsham Tigers to put its best foot forward this season with a new sponsorship deal for the club’s U10’s team. The new partnership will see the housebuilder’s logo featured on the team’s kits for the duration of the season, with matches taking place across the South East. Founded in 1969, Horsham Tigers Football Club consists of three teams of younger players in the Horshamand District Youth Football League and 6 additional teams who take part in regular club

matches and competitions. The club already has a busy season ahead with away games and a series of home matches taking place on the pitches at Horsham Cricket Club and The Needles in Horsham – both less than 10 minutes’ drive away from Miller Homes’ Southwater development, Mulberry Fields. Commenting on the sponsorship, Tom Redman who lives at Mulberry Fields and is also Under 10’s Managerat Horsham Tigers, said: “A massive thank you to Miller Homes for their support of Hor-

sham Tigers. It was fantastic to see the kids’ faces light-up when they saw their new kits. This kind of support is so important to us - it gives the youngsters a sense of pride in the club and it really helps to keep the team spirit alive.” Kim Willcock, sales director for Miller Homes Southern, said: “We have developments across the South of England and in each location we’re committed, not just to creating stunning communities, but to also give something back to those communities. Horsham’s aspirations dented by two soaking reverses

Vince Everitt Saturday December 8 – London 2 South East - Horsham 7 10 Old Colfeians Saturday December 15 – London 2 South East – Beckehham 26 10 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s eight game winning run ended in appallingly wet conditions, when they were narrowly beaten by fifth in the table Old Colfeians – to whom Horsham travel in the RFU Intermediate Cup in February. Horsham’s first defeat since September was followed last Saturday by a reverse against runaway leaders Beckenham, the league’s only unbeaten side. Against Old Colfs at home, Horsham trailed 10 nil just beyond the mid point of the first half, a penalty opportunity then came Horsham’s way, but for once, the ever- accurate boot of Tom Johnson proved fallible, hardly surprising in the testing crosswind,

Aaron Linfield the score remaining unchanged at the break. After changes to the Horsham line up, Michael Tredgett drove over the line from a maul and, when Johnson converted, Horsham were shaded by just three points with 23 minutes still to play. But, although the Green & Whites dominated possession and kept pushing they were unable to penetrate Old Colfeians line again, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “We started poorly and gave them a head start with a few too many missed tackles in the first 25 minutes, boosting their confidence. In the second half we were much better – our lineout secured our ball and some of theirs and it became an even battle, putting them on the back foot. However, we just could not find a way through. We missed two huge opportunities to score, had a try disallowed by an unsighted ref and coughed up too much possession. Credit to Colfeians defensive resilience and structure, they fought for every

scrap, but today we weren’t good enough, despite the performances of our Man of the Match Vince Everitt, Ted Powell, Aaron Linfield and Jamie Redmayne.” In freezing Kentish rain Beckenham’s strong side completed the double over depleted Horsham after inflicting a heavy defeat early in the season. Horsham, though, with five teenagers in their side, took the lead on 15 minues with a Johnson penalty, but the hosts’ converted try soon gave them a 7-3 lead, a penalty try extending their advantage to 14-3 at the break. After Beckenham threatened to score again without success, they did go further ahead with a try on the hour, adding another, this time maximised, and, although Johnson scored a consolation solo try and kicked over Beckenham ran out worthy winners, Nick Stocker commenting: “A disappointing result – our set piece didn’t function, given the number of changes in personnel. On the bright side our 18 year olds all performed well – Aaron Linfield was Man of the Match and showed great spirit throughout, which can be built on. We return to league action at home to Gravesend (fourth) on January 5th, looking to restore winning ways.” With 12 games played and 10 remaining, Beckenham are a dozen points clear of Charlton Park – who, like Gravesend, also lost. Horsham are third, while Heathfield & Waldron are bottom with nine points, two fewer than Aylesford Bulls.

Pulborough well-placed for second half of season push Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough have an extra week of Christmas and New Year break after Hellingly were unable to fulfil last Saturday’s fixture and no longer figure in the league. Boro are fifth on level points with Vigo, both teams having conceded an equal number of points, but Vigo scoring just two – a conversion – more. With six wins from 10 matches Boro have another 10 to play, resuming with two tough fixtures – on January 5th they visit league leaders Crowborough, who have 46 points, then, on the following Saturday, they entertain current runners up Beccehamians (38 points), after which they play Vigo, to whom they lost by a single point earlier in the season, before meeting the bottom two clubs – penultimate Park House at Freelands on February 9th, followed by an away

fixture against Hastings & Bexhill a week later. In the three weeks prior to the break Boro notched up home wins against both Bromley and Old Dunstonians, in between which they suffered an away defeat – by the value of a try - in a competitive game in wet blustery conditions against this season’s new boys Old Williamsonians. With the benefit of the wind behind them, Boro led 17-3 at half time courtesy of a try from Ollie Coombe-Tenant and another from skipper Frazer Oliphant-Hope, who also contributed a penalty and two conversions. Having contained Boro’s advantage within manageable proportions, Old Wills, with the elements in their favour, scored 19 second half points while Boro were unable to get back onto the scoreboard again despite a strong finish, Old Wills’ comeback earning praise from the Boro coaching team.

Slinfold Ladies’ amazing Hole-in-One quartet ! Golf Martin Read - Sports Reporter Although the odds of an amateur golfer making a holein-one are 12,500 to 1, during 2018 four Slinfold ladies accomplished that golfing rarity, the club being rightly proud of the truly outstanding achievement, outgoing Lady Captain, Jeanne Coker enthusing: “It has been a number of years since one of our ladies made a hole-in-one at Slinfold. Yet, this year we have had an unprecedented four!” All four of the remarkable ladies’ fantastic successes were made on par three holes – one on the second – an 123 yard test protected by hazards to both left and right of the green, another on the 11th, an 156 challenge sloping to the right, with a bunker guarding the approach - and

two on the 16th, the 124 hole with water and a bunker either side of the the green. Three of the hole-in-one champions are pictured with Jeanne Coker – from left to right: Ann Grain, who triumphed on the 16th, Jeanne is between Ann and Maggie Jowett, who holed out on the second, while Pat Taylor celebrated on the 16th, Jeanne adding: “The four incredible hole-in-ones are the highlight of my amazing year as Lady Captain – along with the £1,400 raised by the Ladies Section for my chosen charity, the wonderful Sussex children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House. Best wishes to my successor, Jenny Wise – I am confident that our ladies will again give her and her chosen charity, the much-appreciated St Catherine’s Hospice, their full support.”

YMCA forfeit top spot after conceding late penalty Saturday December 15 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 1 Chichester City Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Despite atrocious weather – incessant freezing rain accompanied by funereal gloom - this top of the table clash was entertaining and full of attacks at either end, but it ended in disappointment and frustration for YM, a late Chichester penalty snatching all three points for the visitors when a draw would have been a fairer outcome. An early Chichester free kick was pushed off for a corner, headed off the line, YM, though, were making frequent incursions, but without looking too threatening – until Tony Garrod broke through, firing wide in a one on one opportunity. Chichester then had radar problems of their own, before free kicks from Luke Gedling and Garrod produced two unsuccessful headers among promising YM build ups. Chichester corners followed, Aaron Jeal saving one with his feet, followed by the visitors having a goal disallowed after manhandling the ball into the net, the half ending without either side scoring goal-less regardless of Garrod’s belated blast. The game resumed with further attacks at each end, and, after a YM corner Garrod was floored without sanction and then Alex Barbary’s shot was wayward. Frantic end to end probes continued, with both defences keeping marauders at bay – a Barbary back heel almost creating something and a Dean Bown long range strike being safely gathered by Chichester keeper Ant Ender. Guy Harding cleared a dangerous looking Chichester move and Garrod ran down the left

wing only to see the resultant corner headed past the post. Jack Hartley hit the deck, again the ref waving play on, prior to Callum Donaghey receiving a yellow card, Jeal diving to keep out the 35 yard free kick. Ender subsequently dropped the ball at Bown’s feet but recovered just in time. With a single goal likely to settle the issue, Ollie Gill’s 83rd minute foul gave Chichester a penalty, cruelly entering the net well beyond Jeal’s reach with assistance from the woodwork. Chichester immediately broke through, the linesman signalling offside, pending two late YM free kicks near the goal line failing to change the result. Hats off to the players and officials for delivering a competitive game in grim conditions – and to Ron Moulding and his team for their unceasing efforts to prepare a good pitch when there were postponements at other venues. Chichester are something of a bogey side – having done the double over YM last season, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “There was nothing between the sides – in fact I thought we were better, but we missed out on two glaring chances in the first half and gave away a silly penalty in the second. We’ve just played our two nearest contenders and got just one point from a possible six, so we need to get back on track at East Preston (13th) on Saturday.” Meanwhile, Chichester, with a game in hand, shade YM on goal difference, with Newhaven third on 39 points – four fewer than the leaders, but from two games less. Fixture news – the local derby between Horsham YMCA and Broadbridge Heath has been switched from the Leisure Centre to Gorings Mead, with the reverse fixture on April 20th transferring to Broadbridge Heath

Horsham lose to Bridges but stay third after beating leaders

Photos by John Lines The Bostik League – South East Division Tuesday December 11 – Three Bridges 2 1 Horsham Saturday December 15 – Horsham 4 2 Cray Wanderers Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham again confirmed how well they often play against top teams by becoming the only side to beat runaway leaders Cray Wanderers this season – mystifying supporters who witnessed the Hornet’s unexpectedly flat demise against Three Bridges from the lower reaches of the table four days before. At Jubilee Field the first half was goal-less, with Horsham’s

good ideas coming to nought, while they kept Three Bridges at bay. Bridges were fast on the break, but, although both sides defended well and created opportunities, neither produced any really testing shots on goal, despite Horsham pressing from a series of free kicks. But, the deadlock was broken soon after the break, when the dangerous Connor French side-footed home with assistance from the upright. Lee Harding’s immediate cross was pushed away for a corner, Bridges keeper, former Hornet James Shaw, saving with his feet to concede another set piece and when he could only parry the ball, Chris Smith made no mistake with the equaliser. With the game becoming increasingly competitive, both

keepers were in action, and after Horsham had an unsuccessful corner, French conjured up a welltaken goal, somehow managing to roll the ball in from a prone position. Little time was left, Bridges securing their fourth straight win, Horsham Manager Dom Di Paola telling the District Post: “We were not at our best and they were really up for it – you could see that from their celebrations.” Horsham, though, bounced back with a vengeance against Cray Wanderers at Lancing, with a Rob O’Toole hat trick after he had put Horsham ahead 19 minutes into the game. Ben Mundele soon equalised, before O’Toole re-established Horsham’s 2-1 advantage up to the break. The miserably wet conditions deteriorated even further on the re-start, and within seven minutes Wanderers had drawn level again, Archie Johnson getting the ball past Josh Pelling in the Horsham goal, but the Hornets kept pushing and when Harvey Sparks chased down a seemingly errant long ball he crossed for Horsham’s leading scorer, O’Toole, to head in from close range, notching up his hat trick with his twelfth goal of the season. Wanderers’ keeper Nick Blue twice prevented Tyrrell Richardson-Brown from inflicting further damage, but the Hornets were buzzing and Charlie Harris reprised his habit of firing in an impressive goal just when it matters most by rifling a booming rocket into the top left corner, giving Horsham sweet revenge after last season’s three defeats by Wanderers, details of which are best not dwelt upon. Horsham were denied second place because Hastings recovered to beat visitors VCD Athletic after trailing at half time. Horsham, though, regardless of their blip at Three Bridges, remain third on level points with Hastings, just shaded by the difference of a single goal. On Saturday, looking to maintain their reignited momentum, Horsham travel to ffth-placed Haywards Heath. Meanwhile, approaching the mid point of the season, despite their setback, Cray Wanderers stay top, clear by eight points. Herne Bay are bottom, below Faversham Town and Greenwich Borough.

Heath celebrate fourth straight win – another big one! Saturday December 8 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 6 0 Langney Wanderers

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath’s final spell at the Leisure Centre is ending with a bang! Last month they trounced Hassocks 6 nil – and, last Saturday, they repeated the dose against Langney Wanderers from the Eastbourne area. Heath’s fourth consecutive win has yielded 14 goals while conceding just one, and was all the more remarkable because they were

without several key players. Yet, the opening 20 minutes of even play gave no hint of what was to come – until Heath took control and scored just after the mid point of the half, when the impressive Lee Carney beat Dan Hutchins in the Langney goal following earlier near misses from Dean Wright and Ollie Moore. A tight header from Ryan Brackpool then doubled Heath’s lead, but while Langney were posing an intermittent threat, Heath tightened their grip on the game, when after Langney had been reduced to 10 men because of Ryan Alexander’s late tackle on Richard Wetton, the last action of the first half came when Wetton tucked away a rebound off

the bar.

Despite Wanderers being depleted, this was a very satisfying performance from a Bears squad missing Charlie Leach, Jamie Robinson, Scott Weller, Tim Rivers and top scorer Devon Fender. The game resumed with only nine

Langney players on the pitch – with defender Haywood-Roye injured and unable to continue, their only substitute had already been deployed - but they fought on, never giving up amid the plethora of chances being created by Heath. However, as was likely, Heath gradually wore the visitors down, and in the 65th minute Tom Howard-Bold got himself on the scoresheet, before Wetton promptly added his second – a fine solo effort. And, when George Cousins scored Heath’s sixth the rout was complete, allowing Manager Steve Painter the luxury of rotating his squad, giving Harry Balfour, Dane Reiker and Louie Blake run outs from the

bench. Heath Assistant Manager Sam Chapman told the District Post: “Despite Wanderers being depleted, this was a very satisfying performance from a Bears squad missing Charlie Leach, Jamie Robinson, Scott Weller, Tim Rivers and top scorer Devon Fender. With Andy Waddingham deputising at left back, Tim Cook again showed that he is not just a dangerous goal scoring forward, filling in well at right back, and Marlon Maxwell returning to play alongside Ryan Brackpool in the heart of the Bears’ defence.” The win moves Heath up to fifth, condemning Langney to the 17th spot.
