Time to get Mediaeval The time is almost upon us when the Loxwood Joust’s unrivalled programme of mediaeval revelry, merriment and mayhem, brings Mediaeval England to life on the 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th August. Set for 4 days of celebration, action packed battles, breath taking demonstrations and unique entertainment that will capture the imaginations of all, Queen Katheryn Adelina 1 is celebrating her first year on the throne. As you walk through the Living History Village and on to the battlefield beyond, the sights and sounds of booming cannon fire and the clash of steel on steel will behold you, as over 200 mighty knights’, 70 archers and 20 gunners (to light the cannons) fight with vigour before returning to recoup in their mediaeval battle camp. You can watch the magnificent fully armoured jousting knights earn honour and valour with the pounding of horse’s hooves, as they present a fast-paced, all action jousting tournament that takes place before their Queen; and explore the Mediaeval Market Place where traders bring their wares to sell just like peddlers of old. Treat yourself to a sumptuous four course banquet and be entertained by court jesters, live music and riddlers as you dine. And sample mead as the Mediaeval Baebes entrance and soothe with magical voices, the hypnotic belly dancers dance and Trobar De Morte perform their first UK show. Learn from the apothecaries and get close to graceful high-flying hawks, before you listen to the Copper Pot cook as he unveils the

myths of mediaeval cookery. Join Devilstick Peat as he teaches the Jesters tricks of the trade, hear the Masked Executioner recount his gory trade, or see soldiers retell the importance of archers and billman in mediaeval warfare. Meet the Faerie Goddess, impart your wishes and place her blessing at the Crescent Moon Temple as she brings you closer to the Loxwood nature spirits. Or perhaps you will take part in a true pagan ceremony to renew your vows, make a promise to a friend, family or loved ones, or have a full bespoke handfasting wedding. But maybe it be the witches that will capture your imagination most as they lure and beguile you with their spells and incantations… Join the blacksmith to master the art of metalwork, undertake chain-mailing to create your own jewellery, or try your hand at copper bowl making, as younger ones create a badges in pewter, have their faces beautifully painted or have gruesome wounds applied instead. And then in the Children’s Kingdom where the Mediaeval Groat is the currency, young knights and princesses’ can join sword school combat training, test their bow skills with have-a-go archery, or pelt the peasant and sometimes parent in the stocks! With tales from Lullaby Lisa, shows from the Jester, donkey rides and of course the bouncy castle, there is fun and excitement for adults and children alike. History comes to life each day from 10am to 6pm. Advance tickets are available at www.loxwoodjoust.co.uk

Inspired by a parent request in 2018, Northolmes Junior School decided to host their own Race for Life; raising just over £400. As this was such a well-supported event, the school decided to host their 2nd event last month: “This year, we increased the distance the children could complete. Children were invited to donate money to take part in a 1, 2 or 3km walk, jog or run

In January, twenty Gruffalo soft toys were sent on a global journey as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, established by Horsham District Council. In partnership with Magic Light Pictures, the Gruffalo initiative was created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Gruffalo book in 2019, written by the popular local children’s author Julia Donaldson CBE, and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The toys, specially made for the project as Global Gruffalos, have been sponsored by 20 Horsham District businesses and, in the first six months of the year, their travels have taken them far and wide, from Switzerland to Saudi Arabia, to Italy, America, the Caribbean Islands and beyond. The most theatrically cultured of all the Global Gruffalo was Gruffalo 13, sponsored by The Capitol Horsham in West Sussex. This Gruffalo, which was on tour with the Birmingham Stage Company this month, has mysteriously disappeared during a break-in at the Eden Court Theatre in Inverness. Was the Gruffalo stolen or did he take this opportunity to escape into the Scottish Highlands to search for his ancestors? Julia Donaldson CBE, a Scot herself and creator of The Gruffalo, has been following the 20 Gruffalos’ travels with interest. Advised of this latest development, she said: “This is very intriguing. I wonder what adventures Gruffalo 13 is up to now. It has set me thinking about a third Gruffalo book - The Mystery of

the Stolen Gruffalo, perhaps? Maybe I could cast the Mouse as the detective….” Organisers of the Gruffalo initiative stated: “We await eagerly any further developments from Julia Donaldson but in the meantime Horsham District Council is putting out a call to see if we can find the whereabouts of this missing little Gruffalo. Hopefully he is having fun in the Highlands. If anyone sees him please contact yearofculture2019@horsham.gov. uk. “Let’s find Gruffalo 13 and return him to his home in The Capitol theatre, Horsham before he gets into any further trouble!” Fans of The Gruffalo can follow the exploits of the Global Gruffalos by visiting www.globalgruffalo.co.uk or on Social Media @ GlobalGruffalo, or using the #GlobalGruffalo.

MISSING Have you seen this Gruffalo?

Last seen at the Eden Court Theatre, Inverness 15 July 2019 Gruffalo13, approximately 30cm tall, has brown hair, orange eyes, two extra large tusks, and purple prickles on his back. He also has a distinctive green wart on his nose. We suspect he may be trying to find his ancestors in the Scottish Highlands. Anyone with information as to his whereabouts should contact the Horsham District Year of Culture team at yearofculture2019@horsham.gov.uk © 1999 J Donaldson/ A Scheffler. Innovative new donation scheme to help Horsham’s rough sleepers

MER M U S ER E OFF RE eaF

Horsham residents and visitors who want to help local homeless people now have a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team has launched a new initiative, in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and Greater Change, to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District. Greater Change is a homelessness non-profit service, which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their longer term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is facilitated by community group Horsham Matters, who nominate individual

rough sleepers and refer them to the Greater Change organisation. Homeless individuals, with help from their support workers, set tangible funding goals for what they need to achieve: a rental deposit, fees for a training course or perhaps help to buy furniture when they find accommodation. Contactless donation points will be set up by the Council in areas that benefit from high footfall, such as The Capitol theatre, public buildings, shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. All people need to do to donate is to tap their debit or credit card on the donation terminal, or pay via Apple Pay, and their money will go directly to Greater Change where it will start to benefit the homeless.

Commenting on the new donation scheme and the results it could achieve, the Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing said: “We know that people who live in and visit the Horsham area want to help rough sleepers and many are really generous to people on the streets. “However, it is important that their money goes to the most appropriate channels where it can be used most effectively. “This new scheme helps target giving to where it is most needed to help combat any rough sleeping in our District. “Do look out for the donation points in local outlets and please do give what you can.” If any local businesses wish to sign up for the scheme and display a donation point to help combat homelessness, please email housing@horsham.gov.uk

The World through Autistic Eyes by Joe James

Joe James is an emerging photographer, based in Horsham, whose work has quickly gained a strong following on social media. Joe is autistic and is proud of the abilities this gives him. His highly developed eye for detail, ability to learn quickly and in depth, and his unique perspective on the world are all key to his skills as a photographer. Last year, whilst struggling with depression and anxiety, Joe found a great deal of comfort in walking in the local countryside. He wished to find a way of capturing the memories of these experiences, and photography seemed a natural choice. Having watched

instructional videos online, Joe ventured out with his camera to take some photos. ‘Pony Heaven’, one of the first images that Joe ever captured, received great acclaim on social media which inspired him to develop this new skill. Thanks to the support of his family, friends, and his new-found online following, Joe feels that his mental health has never been better. In this exhibition at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, Joe shares his treasured memories and captured moments through a combination of his photography, and a series of accompanying poems.

Manuka Honey Helps to Save Injured Pup

A Labrador puppy with lifethreatening wounds on his front leg has been saved, thanks to an innovative combination of laser treatment and Manuka Honey dressings. Three-month old Cooper was successfully treated at Medivet 24 Hour Faygate and is now exploring his new home in Ellen’s Green with Ms Laura Hobbs, her partner Mr Mark Jeffreys and their eight-yearold son, Zac. Ms Hobbs describes his recovery as ‘incredible.’ Ms Hobbs bought Cooper from a breeder at the end of May. She was

told that he had a ‘small cut’ on his left foreleg but that it was nothing to worry about. A few days later, he started limping and became lethargic. The next day, two wounds burst open on his leg. They were partially covered by areas of black, hardened skin, indicating a condition called ‘necrosis,’ in which the skin dies. Laura Hobbs rushed Cooper to Medivet Faygate where the veterinary team cleaned his wounds and removed damaged tissue before, to her surprise, applying a dressing containing Manuka Honey. They explained that this type of honey is widely recognised for its antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. Given the severity of Cooper’s wounds, the veterinary team then rebandaged his leg regularly with the Manuka Honey dressings for the next two weeks. Lead vet, Dr Pete van Dongen, also treated them with a laser to reduce pain, promote healing and reduce the risk of infection. Eventually, the wounds were surgically cleaned and then closed, using stitches and further bandages. Two weeks later, Cooper had his stitches removed and he is now fully recovered and living a happy life with his family. A relieved Laura said: “The wounds were so serious that, at

first, we were scared that he might lose his leg. When the Vet told me that they planned to treat them with honey, I was surprised but watching them improve day by day was simply amazing. I worked at home during his treatment so that I could care for him and, as a result, we’ve formed a very strong bond. Seeing him start to enjoy being a puppy again and play with his yellow Labrador ‘brother’ Herbie is just wonderful. We are all very grateful to Pete and the team at Medivet Faygate. “Cooper’s story has a happy ending, but I’d like to remind anyone looking for a puppy to research breeders thoroughly and make sure you find a reputable one. Cooper was being kept in poor conditions and had not been taken to the vet when the wound first appeared. His story could have had a very different ending.” Dr Pete van Dongen said: “Cooper’s case shows that with a combination of old-fashioned and modern veterinary techniques, a dedicated owner and an enthusiastic veterinary team, anything is achievable. It helped that Cooper was such an adorable puppy.” Medivet 24 Hour Faygate is located in Tower Road, West Horsham, and can be contacted on 01293 851122.

Horsham conservation area under threat A Horsham resident has expressed concern over a planning application for a two-storey dwelling on land that is part of the Hadman’s Close development, stating that this is in a conservation area and one of the few green spaces in central Horsham. A statement sent to The District Post read: “Three applications have previously been rejected. Horsham public voiced their disapproval of destroying the ambiance and street scene of Denne Road: this action aided the planning refusals. The new application has serious errors that are misleading to Horsham citizens. It is not adjoining 10 Denne Road, but is at Hadman’s close. A cursory glance could suggest it is for an extension to 10 Denne Road. Previous planning applications refer correctly to Hadman’s Close. Horsham citizens would recognise the exact area and relevant piece of land.

The developer states the proposed works seeks to reinstate the previous use of this land. Untrue. When the Hadman’s Close development was built in the 1960’s this was the “replacement” for a previous building. Then, the plot in front of the houses was written in house owner’s deeds as a recreational amenity for the residents. It was planted with trees. These trees are protected by a preservation order. This is a vital green space through which runs a public footpath. It is recognised by the council who maintain the area and marked as an important plot by the Horsham Society.” A neighbour added: “We need to keep and protect green spaces in towns, we must not let them be swallowed up by housing. They are important for the mental and physical health of the community.” The statement claims the proposed dwelling would be harmful to the character and appearance within the Horsham Conservation area, resulting in the loss of

Children unleash their artistic talents for Horsham year of Culture

More than 50 local children have helped to create an art gallery on the walls of roadside café ‘Billy’s on the Road’, near Billingshurst. As part of Horsham Year of Culture 2019, youngsters were invited to enter a competition to draw, colour or paint their favourite foods. Café owner, Billy Willison, and Year of Culture coordinator, Lisa Brace, had the difficult task recently of choosing the winners. “We were amazed at the number of entries and there was lots of scratching of heads before we were able to choose a winner,” said Billy. “All of the entries have been put up on our walls and the gallery is a celebration of young artistic talent which is exactly what the Horsham Year of Culture is all about. Well done to all of those who entered.” Winner of the under-eight category was six-year-old Patrick Barry from Slinfold School with his vibrant felt tip creation of the

exterior of the café. Mum Jody said: “My son loves it here and we often come after school with his friends or for breakfast at the weekend. The other day, Patrick said to me “we are lucky to live where we do - because we are so close to Billy’s!”” Winner of the over-eights was 10-year-old Eleanor Mott of Farlington School with her mouthwatering picture of waffles, pancakes and cooked breakfast. Mum Laura said: “Eleanor was absolutely delighted as this is the first time, she has won a prize for her artwork.” Both children had their artwork professionally framed and each received a family meal for four at Billy’s. The artwork, including the framed winners’ pictures, will remain on the wall of Billy’s on the Road for the enjoyment of all its customers. an important and attractive green space and trees adjacent to public walkways and roads; And that development would make a nonsense of conservation policy and Tree Preservation Orders that are in place for the benefit of the general public: “All the reasons for previous refusals are still legal. “The two‐storey dwelling and associated parking would appear cramped and out of character on this restricted site and detract from the appearance of the street scene. The access for the one car planned is unclear, it would appear to have to use the public footpath. It will do nothing but make worse the parking problems of the area. “There are very few areas of green so close to the town centre: to destroy this specific area would be against all previous decisions. “The application has been made in a holiday period so many people will not be aware objections have to be in by 31st July 2019.”

Collyer’s Publishing evening huge success On Monday 8 July a publishing evening, for budding authors and people wanting to know more about the publishing industry, was hosted at Collyer’s. Lesley Hart, Creative Writing Teacher, Adult Education at Collyer’s and organiser of the event, explained: “Many of my current and past students formed part of our audience numbers in Collyer’s beautiful Duckering Hall. Other members of the audience came as a result of advertising in the local area through posters, and too on the Horsham Year of Culture website, also via Tweets about the event, and too via Horsham Writers’ Circle members. “Speakers: Daisy White – author of psychological and cosy crime fiction, Juliet West – author of historical fiction, Sarah Swan – Book Blogger, and Kim Nye – Director at children’s publisher’s Maverick spoke to our audience about their journeys into self and traditional publish-

ing, the importance of self-promotion, the role of book bloggers in marketing and promoting books for publishers, and too the submission process, together with the journey a book makes once it has been accepted for publication. Our speakers presentations were followed by an opportunity for our audience to speak to our presenters, and also to ask questions in our Q&A session. This lively and motivational evening has received lots of positive feedback, here are just two of the messages I’ve received: “Thank you so much for organising that Published Authors event on Monday night. I genuinely found it fascinating - all the speakers were so candid and it was really inspirational hearing about their success stories.” “As well as last night’s four speakers being lovely people, the plethora of information they relayed was interesting and valuable.””

Students were invited to submit a short story of 100 words or fewer, in Spanish, on a topic of their choosing. Entries were judged on imagination and creativity, as well as linguistic ability. Jim Buttress judges local gardening competition at Durrants Village On Friday 28 June, renowned horticulturalist and head RHS judge, Jim Buttress, visited Durrants Village, the later living community in Faygate, to give a talk on how to make the most of a small garden space and judge a residents’ gardening competition. Jim discussed how to design and maintain a patio or balcony garden and gave his top tips for creating beautiful containers and hanging baskets. He also talked about his experiences and guests had the opportunity to ask him their gardening questions. The event was enjoyed by residents of the retirement village and keen gardeners from the region. Jim Buttress began his gardening career at RHS Wisley, where he trained before going on to manage numerous London parks and gardens including Hyde Park, St James’ Park, Clarence House, Buckingham Palace and Greenwich Park, and enjoyed tea with the Queen Mother. Jim has appeared on gardening television shows including the BBC’s The Big Allotment Challenge and is a regular radio presenter and guest including on BBC Radio Surrey’s Surrey Dig It gardening programme. He has most recently judged at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and continues to judge RHS flower shows across the country this summer.

It was lovely to welcome Jim to Durrants Village for the second year running. In addition to his talk Jim judged a gardening competition of residents’ gardens at Durrants Village. All of the properties at the retirement village come with either a terrace or a balcony garden. Residents Marion and Michael Higgins won Best Garden Terrace, Mary Ewing won Best Hanging Basket and Mike Revell won Best Container. Guests enjoyed a light lunch and there was a book signing of Jim’s autobiographical book, The People’s Gardener, which was available to purchase on the day. Guests also had the opportunity to receive a tour of the village and meet residents of the community. Liam Stack, Village Manager at Durrants Village, commented: “It was lovely to welcome Jim to Durrants Village for the second year running. Many of our residents are green-fingered and enjoy gardening on a smaller scale here, having downsized from homes with large gardens. It was great to see so many keen

gardeners and those thinking about downsizing to come and see how manageable a smaller garden can be. We were all left inspired by Jim’s expertise and passion for gardening.” Jim Buttress commented: “It was great to return to Durrants Village today and to this year also judge the residents’ gardens. There are some very talented gardeners at Durrants and it was great to see the variety of gardens and how residents have made the most of their patio or balcony space. “Container gardening is easy and fun to do and is much more manageable than maintaining a large garden. I can see how the homes at Durrants Village are perfect for those downsizing and looking to continue their love of gardening in retirement but on a smaller scale.” Durrants Village is set amongst 30 acres of idyllic parkland in the hamlet of Faygate and close to the market town of Horsham. The village offers a total of 172 luxury retirement properties, comprising a mixture of two bedroom apartments and two and three bedroom cottages. Surrounded by beautiful West Sussex countryside, but also within easy reach of London, Durrants Village offers the best of both worlds for over 55s looking to make a smart downsizing move. The homes at Durrants Village centre around an on-site clubhouse that provides a range of country club-style facilities including a restaurant, bar, lounge, swimming pool, gym and library. Within the landscaped grounds there is also a croquet lawn, a lake complete with duck houses and a lake house for residents to enjoy. The cottages at Durrants Village come with a patio garden and the apartments each have a balcony garden. No deal Brexit house price worries not affecting business says leading Horsham Conveyancer Despite numerous warnings of a house price crash should Boris Johnson drive through his plans for a ‘no deal’ Brexit on October 31st, the Horsham property market shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, according to leading Horsham conveyancer Alessandro Mancini, CEO of Mancini Legal, business is booming. ‘So far 2019 looks like being a record year for sales and purchases in Horsham,’ he told The District Post. ‘Whilst the industry is naturally worried that business might drop off a cliff on November 1st, there seem to be no signs of it yet.’ Forecasts for a ‘no deal’ impact on residential housing have varied widely in the past 12 months. In September 2018 Bank of England Governor Mark Carney suggested values could drop by 30% should a hard Brexit happen. In February he repeated his warning saying that a hard Brexit would guarantee prices would fall. Practically, on a national basis, a report last week from Which? showed that growth in prices has been in a downward trend since the Brexit vote in 2016, and that the year on year volume of transactions dropped by a massive 16.5% in June this year. It’s also been taking longer for sellers to find buyers, es-

pecially in the South East where the market has been stagnant. Earlier in July the Government’s official prediction agency, The Office for Budget Responsibility, threw it’s hat in the ring predicting ‘no deal’ would see prices drop by 10% by mid-2021. So are Horsham buyers and sellers bucking the trend and, if so, why? ‘Like most things around Brexit it’s a many layered and complicated question,’ Mancini says, ‘but with so much new building going on in the area prices seem to be well established and settled. As ever there are also deals to be done and whilst it’s more risky for buyers at any time of uncertainty, but Horsham seems to remain a bullish market.’ Uncertainty abounds on all sides. ‘No deal’ would almost certainly see interest rates go up and mortgage affordability go down – but that would boost the buy-to-let market. Housebuilders are worried that a lack of skilled labour from Europe would slow down the rate at which they could build. Recession may strike - overall there’s a lot of guesswork involved. With less than 100 days until Boris’ October 31st commitment there is still time to buy or time to sell. Actually, it’s not too long a time to sit on the fence either.

MEET HORSHAM’S FRIENDLY FACE OF CONVEYANCING

Locally born and bred, and having qualified at Guildford College of Law, Alex Mancini has been helping people in Horsham buy and sell homes since he first opened his office doors eight years ago. Today he knows Horsham and the surrounding areas like the back of his hand. Local knowledge is important in conveyancing – if you’re buying or selling in the area, talk to Alex first.

Bill Kenwright presents Rufus Norris’ multi award-winning production of Kander and Ebb’s landmark musical Cabaret, which will run at The Hawth, Crawley, from Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 September. It has recently been announced that John Partridge, winner of Celebrity MasterChef in 2018, well known to TV audiences as EastEnders’ Christian Clarke, and one of West End theatre’s most prolific leading men (A Chorus Line, Chicago, and La Cage Aux Folles), has been cast as the enigmatic Emcee, with further casting to follow shortly.

Cabaret features show-stopping choreography, dazzling costumes and iconic songs, including ‘Money Makes the World Go Round’, ‘Maybe This Time’ and ‘Cabaret’. Directed by the National Theatre’s Artistic Director Rufus Norris, the production has enjoyed two smash hit West End runs at The Lyric and The Savoy theatres. He’s the man with the sunglasses and the black suit who delivered some of the world’s darkest and most emotional ballads, yet Texasborn Roy Orbison remains one of the most distinctive looking, and sounding, performers in modern music. The one and only Barry Steele takes on the role in The Roy Orbison Story. He comes with great credentials, a genuine admiration for the Big “O”, and has been stunning audiences with his uncanny ability to recreate Orbison’s vocal talents, earning rave reviews across the globe. Expect what is being billed as an upbeat and contemporary slant on Orbison’s legacy, as the show takes audiences on a musical journey from the early Sun years right through to the late 1980s, when Orbison was experiencing a huge resurgence and worked with Bono, Bruce Springsteen and

others, including super group the Traveling Wilburys, alongside former Beatle George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. The production also features not only original material written (but never sung) by Roy Orbison, it also showcases chart busting hits originally made famous by the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Jeff Lynne , ELO, George Harrison, Del Shannon, Chris Isaak, The Spencer Davis Group and The Traveling Wilburys. So get ready for a night of solid gold ‘60s hits and ‘80s contemporary genius, as the Roy Orbison Story celebrates the musical legacy of The Big O. Mailman release 7th of twelve 2019 singles ‘Love’s Young Dream’, the 7th single from the 3rd Mailman album S3ASON (season three), has been released digitally today. Mailman frontman Jamie ‘Stan’ Stanley said: “This is an old song I wrote in the early naughties, which became scarily relevant when I found out I’m going to be a Dad this year. It’s about holding onto your inner child and not letting the world drive it out of you. “No child is born racist, sexist, homophobic or a bully. Those things are made by broken adults.

Break the cycle, basically.” S3ASON is being released as twelve singles, one for every month of 2019, with the album released in January 2020. The 8th single ‘By Your Side’ comes out on 23 August. Jeremy Irons backs No Incinerator 4 Horsham Community Group

Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons has made a financial contribution to No Incinerator 4 Horsham Community Group’s campaign. Jeremy, who has appeared in films such as “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”, was contacted by Ni4H Community Group in the hope of enlisting his support for their campaign on behalf of local residents. Jeremy also sent Ni4H Community Group a copy of his TRASHED environmental documentary film, with music by Vangelis. The film looks into the effect of toxic emissions from incinerators and reveals the extent our rubbish is affecting us and our planet. Blenheim Films said: “With the participation of Jeremy Irons, Candida Brady’s multi award winning

documentary looks at the risks to the food chain and the environment through pollution of our air, land and sea by waste. The film reveals surprising truths about very immediate and potent dangers to our health. It is a global conversation from Iceland to Indonesia between the film star Jeremy Irons and scientists, politicians and ordinary individuals whose health and livelihoods have been fundamentally affected by waste pollution. Visually and emotionally the film is both horrific and beautiful: an interplay of human interest and political wake-up call. But it ends on a message of hope: showing how the risks to our survival can easily be averted through sustainable approaches that provide far more employment than the current ‘waste

industry’.” To view the Trashed trailer, please visit: http://blenheimfilms. com/trashed-film/ The film was officially selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2012; since then it has been released in over 40 countries and shown at thousands of special screenings, including The UK Houses of Parliament and the European Parliament. The film’s trailer is available online: http:// www.trashedfilm.com/ Jeremy Irons said: “There is a clear feeling from a growing number of people that the time has come for us all to start to try and change our ways, and to endeavour to live a more careful life. “We hope the film will demonstrate that, by changing the way

we live our lives, we can contribute to our own survival and well-being and ultimately that of the planet.” In a Guardian interview in response to the question, “What do you want people to do once they’ve seen the film?”, Jeremy said: “I would like them to research whether there is a waste-to-energy plant (incinerator) planned for their area, and, if there is, to oppose it… I would like them to lobby their MPs for legislation designed to cut waste and to regulate the production of packaging… I would like them to use their ingenuity to discover how they can reduce waste - both at home and in their workplace…And I would like them to tell their friends to see Trashed.” Ni4H Community Group is looking for a local venue to host a public screening of the Trashed film. Ni4H Chairman, Peter Catchpole said: “I would like to say a big thank you to Jeremy Irons, one of the UKs most famous and critically acclaimed actors, for supporting Ni4H and making a welcome financial contribution to our funds. Jeremy’s boost to our campaign is timely, however, the community continues to be at a huge disadvantage to Britaniacrest, who are making this appeal, as they have very deep pockets and have instructed one of the best QCs in the country to make their pitch. “As the Public Inquiry is now only 13 weeks away there is added urgency to raise sufficient money, so that Ni4H can afford a barrister and technical experts, to fully represent local residents in presenting

the excellent case we have in [sic] objecting to building this huge commercial and industrial incinerator north of the A264 in Horsham. “Rightly, people are concerned about their future wellbeing and that of future generations, if the incinerator comes to this area and the wholesale change of character that would be brought to our market town and surrounding villages, particularly Warnham, Colgate and Rusper. If the appeal were to succeed, it will negatively impact on many generations of people in our area over the next 30 years. “Recently, our local concerns have also been reflected by The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, calling on the Government to stop permitting the building of ‘archaic’ polluting waste incinerators, as he outlined his opposition to a proposed incinerator in Bexley. “My message to our residents is that in order to make our objections as forcefully as possible, we still need to raise more money to fund full representation at the Public Inquiry, so that our powerful reasons for rejection can be given full weight. Please send us your donation or pledge money today by Debit/Credit card, PayPal or Go Fund Me: via website www.ni4h.org Bank transfer to NatWest: Sort Code: 53-50-39 Account Number: 55388027 or Cheque payable to: ‘No Incinerator 4 Horsham’ send to Ni4H Chairman, Peter Catchpole, Northlands House, Northlands Road. There is also an area of decking adjacent to the Family Room, which is the perfect place to entertain or to enjoy a barbecue over the summer months. To the front of the property there is a garage and driveway, which provides useful off-road parking, with space for two cars. Call Chesworths on 01403 255420 to arrange a viewing.

The Hornets are buzzing as new season beckons ! Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s senior side has delivered promising results in their pre-season friendlies, with just one reverse – at Eastbourne Town, ahead of the trip to Dorset, when, at The Cuthbury, Horsham drew 2-2 with Wimborne Town. With the new season fast approaching, the Hornets are at Burgess Hill Town on Saturday for their final warm-up game, prior to Leatherhead’s

visit to Horsham’s new home – The Camping World Stadium – on the following Saturday (August 10th), for the opening match in the Isthmian League Premier Division campaign. Then, on Tuesday August 13th Horsham have a trip to Nyewood Lane to take on Bognor Regis. Meanwhile, the Club has announced that the home fixture against Wingate & Finchley, originally scheduled for Saturday August 24th, has had to be switched to Tuesday September 17th at 7.45pm

Horsham YMCA raring to go – on and off the field Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After extensive training sessions and a programme of pre-season friendlies, Horsham YMCA begin their league campaign with a home match against Little Common this Saturday, before heading for Alfold on Tuesday evening. Then, on Saturday August 10th they entertain Croydon in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. There is also a full schedule of U23 matches with the opportunity to see budding future stars – YM’s fixtures can be found here - https://www.horshamymcafc.co.uk/content. php?pg=match&pd=1022 Meanwhile, there were goals a plenty in the warm-up friendlies, after beating Roffey and then Billingshurst YM were shaded 3-4 by Guildford City before receiving an object lesson from Staines last Saturday. YMCA finished runners up in the league last season, and, after the Guildford game, Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “Our goalkeeper Aaron Jeal had to have his appendix removed in a hurry, but he’s recovering quickly and will soon be back out on the pitch. Other than that we’re fighting fit and can’t wait to get started, and I’m pleased that Aaron’s younger brother, Callum, is back with us. The friendlies gave the opportunity for all the players to have a run out – we used 24 during the Guildford game!” Horsham YMCA has a fantastic range of facilities for all types of business and social occasions with a 150 capacity main hall. And, in addition to the bar and lounge, there is the boardroom for meetings,

all backed up with plentiful onsite parking. The friendly club is run entirely by volunteers, Keith Holmes saying: “Helping at YM is most fulfilling, we are an active community club and are always happy to welcome anyone with an interest in sport, especially football, and wishing to build on that, developing their expertise as part of our management admin or maintenance team, discovering what makes us tick. Our Gorings Mead HQ is a very pleasant, sociable place with excellent facilities – in addition to regular football from our two teams we have snooker, TV coverage of football and major sporting events, catering arrangements, a large hall for hire - complete with a stage and a range of social activities - and a cosy, well-stocked bar. We’re a wellestablished, successful and respected club, always looking to better ourselves. Our first team plays in the Southern Combination Football League and our Under 23 team is also flourishing. Our volunteers gain free access to all of our matches – at home and away and to the wide range of events at the club. Horsham YMCA is a great, long-standing club and keeping it going is fun and very rewarding, so, if you can spare a few hours a week to commit we look forward to meeting and welcoming you - we always give every assistance to anyone joining our team. At Gorings Mead on Saturday afternoon we kick off what should be another memorable season, so if you’d like to find out more about getting involved then come to the committee room at half time for a cup of tea - we’d love to see you!” Horsham YMCA Football Club, Gorings Mead, Horsham, RH13 5BP Keith Holmes - keithdh80@ hotmail.com

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath football club

is thrilled to announce that their FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie against Punjab United at Gravesend’s Elite Venue on

Saturday August 10th (starting at 12.30) will be streamed live on the BBC Sport website, app and iPlayer. The BBC have confirmed that they will be broadcasting one game from every round of this season’s FA Cup qualifying, and Broadbridge Heath has the honour of being chosen to kick off the series. A total of 368 teams will compete in the extra preliminary round - the first of 13 hurdles before the final on 23 May 2020 and, like Broadbridge Heath, Punjab United – billed as Kent’s most successful Asian team - play in the ninth-tier. Punjab are no strangers to appearances on the BBC, having been the subject of an earlier documentary. They compete in the Southern Counties East League, while Broadbridge Heath play in the Southern Combination. Meanwhile, Broadbridge Heath start their league programme this Saturday with a visit to East Sussex to take on Langney Wanderers, then on Tuesday (August 6th) they welcome near neighbours Loxwood.

Slinfold Pair Win the Jerdein Memorial Salver Earlier in the year, Karen Ashcroft and Cathy Downey represented Slinfold in the Daily Mail Foursomes. The national tournament starts with a series of seven eliminating rounds to get to the final 16 pairs who go on to play in the finals event. Karen and Cathy are no strangers to the tournament having twice made it to the finals. They started the tournament in good form with

Slinfold’s Karina Gill and Sue Hall took to the podium at the Jerdein Memorial Salver county competition earlier last month. The event, organised by the Sussex County Ladies Golf Association (SCGLA), was played at The Dyke Golf Club. The Jerdein Memorial Salver is one of a number of competitions in SCLGA’s calendar and, this year, attracted 45 golf clubs from across the county. Each golf club enters a pair, whose individual scores are aggregated to give the final score. Both Karina and Sue put in an impressive performance, with Karina playing below handicap and earning a 0.6 reduction in her exact handicap. The pair’s aggregate score of 71 points secured first place and the Jerdein Memorial Salver. Lady Captain, Jenny Wise, said:

“We are delighted with Karina and Sue’s win. Winning an SCLGA county competition means a lot to our Club and puts Slinfold Golf & Country Club firmly on the golfing map.” Also in July, Slinfold Ladies’ Division 3 team beat Mid Sussex at Ifield Golf Club in the QuarterFinals of the Inter-Club Division 3 Championship 2019, a scratch matchplay competition also organised by SCLGA. The team, comprising seven players each with handicaps of 21 and above, will meet West Sussex in the SemiFinals to be played on Goodwood’s Park Course on 9 August. Jenny continued: “It is great to see our Club not only represented in the knockout stage of the InterClub Division 3 Championship, but doing well. We wish the team every success in the Semi-Finals.”

Winning an SCLGA county competition means a lot to our Club and puts Slinfold Golf & Country Club firmly on the golfing map wins against Horsham Golf Park in Round 1, Mannings Heath Golf Club in Round 2 and West Sussex Golf Club in Round 3. Unfortunately, in June they were defeated in Round 4 by Cranleigh Golf & Country Club. Jenny commented: “We are very proud of Karen and Cathy and share their disappointment. Foursomes is undoubtedly the trickiest of all the golfing formats and the pair have a good track record together. They will be strong favourites in the Daily Mail Foursomes selection round that we hold later in the year, which decides who will go on to represent Slinfold in the 2020 tournament.”

Billingshurst’s Travis Tiplady is Wimbledon bound !

Tennis Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst Lawn Tennis Club is thrilled to announce that 14 year old Travis Tiplady, a junior at the Club, is on his way to Wimbledon to play in a National tournament there next month. Travis qualified for the distinction by winning a prestigious county competition, when he battled through matches to win a place in the main draw of the Sussex Road to Wimbledon tournament, at West Worthing, where he faced several encounters against seeded players before winning the Final in straight sets and being crowned

Sussex champion. Travis, from The Weald School, has earned the chance to compete on the hallowed turf of SW19 against other county winners from around the UK at the Finals event on August 7th. The esteemed annual event is open to juniors aged 14 and under with a rating of 7.1 or lower, players having to first qualify via their clubs before going on to compete against other juniors from across their county. This was Travis’ third entry into the tournament, but the first time he has progressed beyond the second round, enthusing: “I’m so happy to get the chance to play at Wimbledon - it’s been my dream since I started playing

tennis! Before the tournament, I trained hard and practised all my shots and serves. But, I tried not to think about whether I had a chance of winning because I didn’t want to get nervous. I’m so excited to be going to Wimbledon and I can’t wait for the National competition to start!” And, in the girls’ competition, another Billinghurst junior – 14 year old Olivia Falkner - also did well, only losing in a closely-fought semi-final match to the eventual winner. Delighted Billingshurst LTC chairman Richard Cordy said the successes are down to the Club’s flourishing junior programme: “Huge congratulations to Travis for winning this event; he’s done amazingly well to progress to the Road to Wimbledon Finals and we’re all very proud that he’ll be there representing the Club. Our junior programme is going from strength to strength, and it’s great to see juniors like Travis and Olivia coming down to practise on our new clay courts. It’s also testament to all of the hard work of our coaches and the support of the parents that our juniors are doing so well.” Information regarding membership, coaching, holiday camps, booking arrangements and much, much more is available on the Club website https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/ billingshursttennisclub/ Billingshurst Lawn Tennis Club (LTA registered) The Recreation Ground, Lower Station Road, RH14 9SU - e mail – billingshursttennis@ gmail.com – 07949 805474

Blank weekend for Roffey but they stay at the top Saturday July 27 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Earlier in this campaign Roffey thrashed East Grinstead at home, but last Saturday the game was called off early without a ball bowled, the weather seemingly targeting this fixture after previous abandonments when the sides have been due to meet in recent seasons. In a big county like Sussex adverse weather can make the league something of a lottery when some games proceed and others do not, but on this occasion the sole Premiership game played did not affect the leading positions, so, after receiving the regulation ten points for the abandonment, Roffey remain top, still 39 points

clear of Brighton & Hove. Roffey and East Grinstead are the only two sides in the league to have suffered three abandonments each. The Roffey feeder teams fared no better than the senior side last Saturday with no action in any of the other three games – in a top of the table clash the 2nd XI was scheduled to play top of the table Worthing, whom they trail by a single point. Roffey 3s lead their league, 14 points clear of Barns Green 2s, despite being unable to get under way against West Wittering, while Roffey 4s were destined to visit Warnham, but the waterlogged pitch was deemed unsafe, leaving Roffey 4th XI, 19 points shy of table-topping Crawley Eagles. With local bragging rights at stake, on Saturday Roffey 1st XI return home to welcome struggling Horsh am, whom they beat at Cricketfield Road earlier in the season.

Come to Billingshurst’s President’s Day Reunion – calling all past players Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter August 11th will be another red letter day at Billingshurst Cricket Club - Jim Burroughs’ President’s Day - with two T20 games planned, starting at 11am with The Vet’s XI v Shaka Shambrook’s XI, then, after lunch, with BBQs in full flow, Mike Burroughs will skipper his father’s President’s Invitation “Old Boys” team against “Present Day Billingshurst”. The big day will be especially significant because it marks the 30th anniversary of the club 2nd XI’s famous Arun Valley League victory, as well as the club’s last tour of Norfolk, Roger Lusted saying: “A Reunion tour is already planned and we obviously need to commemorate the momentous League victory! So, we are celebrating the anniversary as part of this year’s President’s Day Reunion. The Club wants to welcome back as many former players as pos-

sible – from all eras – to join in the celebration and enjoy a little reminiscing, so I look forward to hearing from ex players, especially those from the great days of the late 70s to early 90s, including those going on the ‘Old Boys Tour’ to Norfolk in September – I’d love to be able to recreate the photo!” Roger continues: “Please reply back to me if you are able to come along on the 11th and indicate if you would like to play. Chris Holmes is producing a Facebook Event for the Reunion, so take a look at that and respond with a “Going” or “Interested” – if you are not currently one of Chris’s Facebook Friends then please do search him out and request to be added to his Friends’ listing. The President’s Day Reunion promises to be another highly memorable occasion at our Club and it will be great to catch up with everyone who has helped to make Billingshurst Cricket Club so special.”

Horsham suffer another narrow defeat Saturday July 27th THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Horsham 158-4 (20 overs) – Cuckfield 159-6 (19.3 overs) Cuckfield won by 4 wickets – Cuckfield 20 points Horsham 10 points Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter The excellent drying capability at Cricketfield Road permitted Horsham’s game against Cuckfield to proceed – the only Premier League fixture to be fulfilled last Saturday. However, heavy rain over night and in the morning reduced the game to a T20 contest, with both Horsham and Cuckfield, ninth and eighth in the table respectively in need of a win to improve their chances of retaining league status. Earlier in the season Uckfield beat Horsham by 15 runs in a high scoring league game, whereas Horsham secured a comfortable win against the visitors in the Quarter Final of the Sussex Cup. So, with the sides wellmatched, a tight game ensued. Cuckfield inserted Horsham, who got off to an enterprising start, Craig Gallagher launching Sussex’s Abidine Sakande for a big six in the first over, before Gallagher and Tom Haines hit 3 fours between them in the fourth over, at the end of which Horsham were 30 without loss. Next over Haines was dropped from a regulation

opportunity in the deep and went on to hit three more boundaries, including a superb cover drive, but when he was well caught for 29 in a quick, low catch at short third man, Horsham were 49-1 in the seventh over, then, by the half way stage of their allocation, they had moved on to 70-1 after Gallagher had cut and pulled further boundaries. Some poor ground fielding was assisting Horsham, and Captain Michael Thornely was getting into his stride with fours and a legside smashed six, Horsham’s hundred coming up in the 14th over. Gallagher’s 50 arrived next over, but then he was well caught – for 52 - by Joe Cambridge going backwards towards the boundary rope. Nick Oxley was then snaffled behind, but Thornely pressed on with a legside four before depositing Sakande for a six into the trees towards the railway line, an unfortunate run out not slowing progress, Thornely’s four and six in Horsham’s last available over posting a challenging 159 run target. Cuckfield set off in hot pursuit, wicketkeeper Bradley Gayler batting with former Horsham player Joe Ludlow. At the end of the third over Gayler had scored all 26 of his side’s runs, with 2 fours and a six to his name, before James Brehaut accounted for him, thanks to a smart catch by Haines. Ludlow, though, was particularly brutal in Brehaut’s second over and it took a brilliant diving caught and bowled by Harnoop Kalsi to dismiss him. Akshay Ramani took 3-27 from his

four overs, aided by sound catching, notably a superb overhead grasp from Thornely running away from the wicket. But, at 150-5 only 9 runs were required from the last two overs, Cuckfield getting home with three balls to spare at the end of their well-judged run chase, each of their first six batsmen making useful double figure contributions. To survive in the Premiership Horsham will probably need to win three of their remaining five games, with bottom club Mayfield and 7th-placed Three Bridges particular targets. At Worthing Horsham 2nd XI were unable to play, but on Horsham’s John Dew ground the 3rd XI scored 191-7 in a game reduced to 35 overs, Crawley CC’s 2nds winning by 7 wickets with three balls unused. This Saturday Horsham go to Roffey, hoping to avenge the defeat at the hands of their near neighbours earlier in the season. Meanwhile, news of Horsham players – Tom Clark, who has just celebrated his 18th birthday, scored 94 for England U19 v the Ireland Academy at Loughborough before playing for the U19s against both India and Bangladesh. And, Mika Ekstrom Horsham’s popular overseas player last season is now with Usk in Division 1 of the SE Wales League. Mika has had games for Glamorgan 2nd XI, and was pleased to renew his acquaintance with Horsham when Glamorgan 2nds visited for a game against their Sussex counterparts in early July.

Billingshurst narrowly defeated but remain in contention Saturday July 27 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – Division 2 Goring by Sea 138 all out (42.2 overs) Billingshurst 125 all out (36.3) Goring won by 13 runs – Goring 30 points – Billingshurst 11 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter After beating struggling Goring comfortably at the coast in their previous encounter, and having bowled them out for a seemingly inadequate total last Saturday, Billingshurst were very disappointed to come off second best, especially as the relegationthreatened seasiders had won just two of their preceding 12 matches. Put in to bat, Goring put on a 58 run opening stand, but then slumped to 85-5, 18 year old left armer Tom Alexander dismissing Goring’s Sam Botham for 60 before Captain of the day Ben Williams (3-26) took three quick wickets and Alexander another. Then, with little further resistance, Alexander claimed three more scalps to end with

5-27, Andy Barr’s pace being too much for the lower order as he finished with 2-38. Billingshurst started badly, but thanks to Jordan Willoughby’s watchfulness they recovered to 67-2, before their hitherto batting frailty came back to haunt them, only two batsmen reaching double figures to support Willoughby’s 90 ball 63, Oliver Watkins and Matt Keen taking five wickets apiece as crestfallen Billingshurst subsided from 99-4 to 125 all out. However, after leaders Hastings’ defeat at Bognor earned them just four points and current runner up Haywards Heath received just 10 points for an abandonment, no damage was done, Billingshurst staying third, 22 points behind Hastings and 17 shy of Haywards Heath. But with five games to play, including three against teams in the top half of the table, much still remains to be done for Billingshurst to regain their coveted place back in the Premiership. On Saturday they travel to Hassocks looking to avenge their 29 run defeat against St James’s Montefiore earlier in the season.
