Residents of the district are saddened by the sudden, unforeseen shutting of one of Horsham’s most popular restaurants – Strada in East Street. The website had been seeking Christmas bookings and everything appeared up-beat with no hint of impending closure, leaving customers shocked and distraught, because when they were in the restaurant the previous evening there was no suggestion that the business was about to cease functioning. Strada’s London Head Office were unavailable for comment but at the East Street building an announcement reads: “It is with much sadness that we have had to close our branch at Horsham due to disappointing trading and rising costs in an increasingly competitive market.” While there is no shortage of alternative restaurants in East Street and elsewhere in Horsham, the loss of the popular Strada, following the closure of the nearby French restaurant Cote (after a fire in September) has been received

with great disappointment locally, as witnessed by posts on social media, including from diners who were in Strada the night before the closure when “business as normal” seemed to be the case. The company’s statement continues: “Be assured that we have offered all of our team members the chance to relocate to one of our other branches and have been fortunate to see many of them to take this opportunity. Where this hasn’t been possible we have ensured that we have offered the right level of practical and financial support as we appreciate that this is a difficult and unsettling time for all involved. We are very sorry to have to take such actions that affect our team members and local communities alike. This closure in no way reflects (badly upon) the dedication and passion that our staff have put in to serving our loyal customers over the years and we are very thankful for their hard work.” A search on the company website for a nearest remaining Strada restaurant to our area suggests a trip to either Tunbridge Wells or Wimbledon, cold comfort for those hoping to have been able to continue enjoying meals at the Horsham branch.

Professional safeguarding expert, local resident Ben Jacobs has set up a Horsham Community Safety page on Facebook to help raise awareness aimed at tackling personal safety issues. Ben’s idea was reposted by The Horsham Facebook page and received a huge response proving a need for this kind of project. While the Horsham district is happily regarded as a low crime area compared with inner city locations, crime and potential dangers are nevertheless all around us and Ben’s idea is to use his considerable, successful experience to provide advice on how people can avoid needless exposure to harmful situations, telling the District Post: “My concern is that everyone is so busy and preoccupied today and although in many ways we are more streetwise than ever, we tend to be in a bit of a

call for anyone in difficulty should always be the police and I’m not out to encourage people to become ‘have a go heroes’, but it is clear that the spate of knife crimes and other problems compromising personal safety is creating unease and I’d just like to provide a spur to encourage people to take individual responsibility for their own safety by bringing a few useful remedies to their attention – after all, when somebody is out and about, often the only person that they can rely on is themself!” Ben’s job is to ensure the safety of individuals in his care and he is keen to pass on the necessary safeguarding skills that he has had to acquire - and needed to put in practice on a daily basis – and he sums up saying: “I’ve had considerable interest in my proposed safety sessions and am currently holding funding discussions and talking to a possible venue with a view to holding the first event in April for around 150 people and I invite anyone interesting in attending to get involved, initially by joining my Horsham Community Safety Facebook page.”

Horsham’s signature Piazza Italia event is ready to roll this Easter weekend with a host of unique attrractions for all ages and interests. Bikes and Scooters Good Friday brings a welcome return to a massive display of Italian bikes, featuring a fascinating cross section of Ducati models and many other brands. (Bike Display in East Street from 12.30pm). The Bullseye Scooter Club will host a terrific display of Italian scooters, alongside their friends at The Bear pub, in Market Square on Easter Monday from 10am. Children’s and family activities Indoors: We have lots of indoor activities this year, should the weather not be so kind to us. On Good Friday and Easter Monday, there is slot car racing with Horsham Rotary at the Council’s Parkside building – just £1 a go with circuits for both novice and more confident ‘drivers’. We have not just one or two, but three F1 Simulators at Parkside this year. Pirelli have brought their replica F1 car as part of the Kwik Fit Road Safety Zone, and Altitude Events have their two simulators inside the Parkside foyer, with one on one challenge racing on Good Friday, and a fastest lap time competition, with a very special prize from Premier GT

as part of their Race Paddock on Easter Monday. (Both just £2 a go, or equivalent donation to Pirelli). Listen to the Mad Music Machine by STEAMCademy, as it produces tunes using samples of all your favourite supercar sounds. Not part of Piazza Italia, but a fun edition to Easter Saturday, there will be Messy Easter activities for younger children, thanks to Horsham Churches Together in Swan Walk near Toy Barnhaus. Outdoors: There are Fun Fair rides on the Forum by Bensons (Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday), and free Pizza making with Dominos on the Carfax (Good Friday). Up at the Parkside offices, there will be face painting and ice cream there, both days, and Jumpin’ Jockeys (Good Friday), plus child’s Go Karts (Easter Monday). The Springboard Project have Easter Arts and Crafts at Parkside, and huge local favourite ‘Tom Foolery’ will be down in the Carfax between 2 and 4pm on Easter Monday. It made me think about things I hadn’t even considered before about sleeping rough. Thank you for looking after us so well. This work YMCA do is indispensable.” Another said: “It was one night that could make a difference to lots of nights for others. Great fun and nice people.” There are many young people who, for a range of reasons, find they can no longer remain living at home. Last year, across West Surrey, East and West Sussex, YMCA DLG housed around 550 young people every night who would otherwise have been homeless. The YMCA works hard to help these young people rebuild their lives and move forward, but funding is a constant challenge. continued with homage to Will’s grandfather Barry saying: “Until retirement he worked in special education, his passion, and devoted his life to improving the lives of so many and fulfilled his dream of becoming headmaster.” The family also said that the schools that benefited from Barry’s talents included Muntham House at Barns Green and that he had dedicated much of his time to charity fund raising, including at the Barns Green Half Marathon. Amid messages from friends the local pub where Will worked said: “We were proud and honoured to have you as part of our pub family.” Will was clearly a popular student at Tanbridge House School, too, where Principal Jules White described him as “a wonderful person” and continued: “He always showed the very best qualities of being kind, generous and caring and was a highly intelligent model student, held in the highest regard by peers and staff. Tragedy struck the close knit community of Barns Green at around 8.40 last Saturday morning when a train hit a car at the Emms Lane level crossing on the outskirts of the village. Keen footballer 15 year old Will Hallett was being driven by his grandfather Barry Hearnshaw, 72, to play in a match when the horrific accident happened, sadly both died at the scene after the car was severely damaged. Will was an enthusiastic Chelsea supporter – as appreciated by the club, who have been in contact with the family – and he played for Horsham Sparrows. As the police and rail authorities began to investigate the circumstances leading to the collision tributes of cards and flowers were left near the crossing, and Will and Barry’s family said: “One thing this tragedy has proved to us is how popular and loved Will was within our beautiful village of Barns Green, and at Tanbridge House School. He was a high grade achiever who aspired to be an airline pilot. We are utterly devastated by this tragic accident that has robbed us of our gorgeous, lovable and cheeky son.” The family

Top marks for Horsham District food providers in 2018 Sussex Food and Drink Awards

Celebrations were in full flow last week as the Sussex Food & Drink Awards revealed the county’s top food and drink producers for 2018, all hailed as local heroes as they received their winning trophies at the Amex Community Stadium in Brighton. Hosted by Danny Pike of BBC Sussex and actress Julie Graham, representing the charity Chestnut Tree House, the glittering 12th awards ceremony saw 400 leaders in the food, drink and farming industry gather together for what is dubbed as ‘the Sussex foodie event of the year’, celebrating the cream of Sussex food and drink producers. Guests were treated to a wonderful ‘Sussex bubbly and ale reception’, sponsored by NFU Mutual Pulborough, with Harveys Ale, Carr Taylor sparkling wine, Wobblegate apple juice and Brighton Gin accompanied by delicious canapés from The Naked Food Company. As temperatures plummeted this week our first response was to turn up our heating or put on extra layers, but what must it be like for what seems to be an increasing level of homeless people in our town? Whilst some of us are happy to put our hands in our pockets or buy hot drinks for them, this is only a small glimmer of normality for these guys. It has been reported that we saw an increase in homelessness of 15% in 2017 on the previous year and Horsham hasn’t escaped the statistic. If you are wondering what you can do to help, the YMCA DownsLink Group (YMCA DLG) will be staging a Sleep Easy sleepout in Horsham on Friday 16 March. Volunteers are invited to give up their warm beds for one night and make a difference for young people in Horsham.It won’t be warm or comfortable, but this is an opportunity to do something remarkable for the local community. YMCA winter sleepout that raises awareness of youth homelessness and vital funds to change the futures of young people.

Horsham’s Lauren Ashby is thrilled to have been voted Young Braveheart of the Year, the annual Crufts award celebrating the achievements of inspiring and innovative young people making a difference for their dogs. The acclaimed award is for really special young dog lovers who have been nominated by the public in recognition of the way that they have overcome personal barriers to achieve success. In January 2017, 14 year old Millais schoolgirl Lauren was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma Stage 3 and has since undergone surgery and six months of intensive Chemotherapy treatment, including spells in hospital and travelling to the Royal Marsden Hospital several times a week plus home nursing visits. Britaniacrest contend that they have the experience, knowledge and technology to create innovative solutions for safe, environmentally friendly recycling processes for plastics, wood, metal and builders’ rubble and that they have listened to and resolved concerns voiced about their original proposals and have lowered the height of the buildings that would be constructed. You are always worthy of recovery, you warrant freedom and to live a fulfilling life. “This year, we need to use Eating Disorders Awareness Week to make our voices heard-to shout not only above the endless roar within our minds, but also the proclamations of those in power: the ones who hold the ability to invest change, yet are instead stripping local services of funding and crucial support, leaving those most vulnerable at the upmost risk. “Mental health is just as important as physical health, and I hope that one day the two will be viewed on an equal platform. Until then, we must continue to fight; battle not only against our illness, but those who continue to deminish crucial protection and relief to those most in need. “On a more personal note, I am not where I need to be, but I have come a hell of a long way from the girl I was. Sometimes my illness makes me crave that sickness once more, but I continue to choose recovery each day and I am reaping the benefits more and more. Last week was National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Beat, the UK’s eating disorder charity, states that, on average, 149 weeks pass before those experiencing eating disorder symptoms seek help, and according to a YouGov survey conducted for EDAW, more than one in three adults (34%) in the UK, who gave an answer, could not name any signs or symptoms of eating disorders. Rebecca Walters, from Horsham, has battled with an eating disorder for five years. She spoke, last week, about the devastating effects that Anorexia Nervosa had on her: “My illness has stripped me of my adolescence, forced me to withdraw from university, face two inpatient admissions to specialist hospitals, as well as crippling my physical health.” Rebecca wants to emphasise the importance of transparency in being open with one’s struggles. She continued: “You should not be ashamed, you should not feel the need to lie about appointments, disguise where you’ve been with the umbrella term of a ‘doctor’s appointment’ when in reality you have just sat through an hour of intense therapy, been weighed and measured. It can be hard to ‘come clean’, the hot and heavy shame of the connotations of your illness weighing heavy on your shoulders. “Yet, once you do it, once you reach out, the response is overwhelming and full of love and support. Everyone wants to help, and you deserve to be helped.

It was a day of pancakes and biscuits for 1st Rudgwick Scouts as they recently thanked their local community for supporting them as their local chosen charity, as part of the Co-op Local Community Fund Cause. Up and down the country, on Saturday 24 November, a total of £19million was given to local community causes as part of the Co-op’s Payout Celebration Day. By simply choosing a local cause, 1% from the sale of Co-op branded products and services purchased by a Co-op member would go to their local chosen cause. Co-op Regional Manager for the South, Mark, said: “I have been so humbled to have spoken with colleagues, and local causes, to gain a better appreciation of where the Co-op support goes and how many people are impacted by that support”. A resident at a care home in Horsham had her wish come true when she was surprised with a trip to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower. Rose Southon, who lives at Care UK’s Skylark House, on St Marks Lane, has always loved travelling and dreamed of going to Paris. So much so, she made a wish upon the home’s ‘Wishing Tree’ to take a trip to Paris. Working with Rose’s son, Nick, the team at Skylark House helped make her wish for a once in a lifetime trip to Paris to see the sights come true. Hopping on board the Eurostar from Ebbsfleet International to Paris, Rose, Nick and Patricia, a

carer from Skylark House, arrived in the city for a weekend of sightseeing, including a special trip to the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. Rose embraced the French lifestyle and enjoyed a visit to a Parisian café where she had lobster and sampled some local tipples. Rose said “This experience was the trip of a lifetime and I am delighted that I had the chance to enjoy Paris’ famous landmarks in person. It was such a brilliant surprise - I cannot thank Nick and the team at Skylark enough for helping arrange the trip, and giving me the chance to visit Paris.” Skylark House home manager, Devendra Lallchand, commented: “We always like to go the extramile to grant the residents’ wishes. £50,000 reward still on offer for information on Gatwick drones

The story of the Gatwick drones shows no real sign of disappearing as Sussex Police put all available resources into finding those responsible. A £50,000 reward is still on offer should information lead to an arrest and successful prosecution. The incident that caused widespread disruption to thousands is alleged to have been caused by multiple drones being flown between December 19th and December 21st. Two damaged drones have since been found in the surrounding area but have been ruled out as part of the enquiry.

Some have also stated that it may have been Police drones at fault but this has be proven unfounded with Sussex Police stating, Contrary to some reports in the media, we would like to clarify that no Sussex Police drones caused the airport to shut down or kept it shut down at any stage. Disruption at Gatwick Airport was caused categorically by illegal drone activity and not as a result of any use of police drones. No police drones were in operation at the start of the incident and were not launched at all unless in response and only when the airport was closed.

Following a recent Police comment where it was said that there may not have been any drones at all, people were quick to voice the opinion that it was all part of a much larger story, however, the Police, along with a range of partner agencies are now working on relevant sightings by 115 witnesses, 93 of which are classed as credible due to having been from people used to working in the busy airport environment, a pilot, police officers and airport staff. Along with these witnesses more information has been gathered from the 1000 house to house enquiries that have so far been made. Local schoolboy’s ambitious Lego project receives cash boost A Year 10 pupil from Christ’s Hospital, who appealed to the local community to donate Lego bricks to complete an ambitious project, has received a welcome cash boost from local business, D.W. Nye in Kingsfold. 14-year-old Levi, who has been interested in Lego and making things all his life, is attempting to build a large model of his school and requires an estimated 60,000 bricks to complete the replica 19th century building. Rex Nye, who is Managing Director at builders’ merchant D.W. Nye, and is a keen Lego fan himself, spotted Levi’s story in

the local news and felt compelled to assist. He said: “I’m a huge fan of Lego, and of course construction. When I saw Levi’s quest to recreate what I consider such a beautiful building and one of our local landmarks, I couldn’t help but immediately think it would be great if our company could assist with funds. I’m really looking forward to seeing the end result of all Levi’s hard work.” Levi is hoping to have his project completed during 2020. The School and Levi have thanked Mr Nye for his kind support and offered him an invitation to the unveiling.

How ‘Dry January’ is the secret to better sleep, saving money and losing weight New research from the University of Sussex shows that taking part in Dry January – abstaining from booze for a month – sees people regaining control of their drinking, having more energy, better skin and losing weight. They also report drinking less months later. The research, led by Sussex psychologist Dr Richard de Visser, was conducted with over 800 people who took part in Dry January in 2018. The results show that Dry January participants are still drinking less in August. They reported that: drinking days fell on average from 4.3 to 3.3 per week; units consumed per drinking day dropped on average from 8.6 to 7.1; frequency of being drunk dropped from 3.4 per month to 2.1 per month on average. Dr Richard de Visser, Reader in Psychology at the University of Sussex, said: “The simple act of taking a month off alcohol helps people drink less in the long term: by August people are reporting one extra dry day per week. There are also considerable immediate benefits: nine in ten people save money, seven in ten sleep better and three in five lose weight. “Interestingly, these changes in alcohol consumption have also been seen in the participants who didn’t manage to stay alcoholfree for the whole month - although they are a bit smaller. This shows that there are real benefits to just trying to complete Dry January.” The University of Sussex research showed that: 93% of par-

ticipants had a sense of achievement; 88% saved money; 82% think more deeply about their relationship with drink; 80% feel more in control of their drinking; 76% learned more about when and why they drink; 71% realised they don’t need a drink to enjoy themselves; 70% had generally improved health; 71% slept better; 67% had more energy; 58% lost weight; 57% had better concentration; 54% had better skin. Dr Richard de Visser’s

findings come from three self-completed online surveys: 2,821 on registering for Dry January; 1,715 in the first week of February; and 816 participants in August. A new YouGov poll undertaken for Alcohol Change UK showed

that one in ten people who drink – an estimated 4.2 million people in the UK – are already planning to do Dry January in 2019. Dr Richard Piper, CEO of Alcohol Change UK, said: “Put simply, Dry January can change lives. We hear every day from people who took charge of their drinking using Dry January, and who feel healthier and happier as a result. “The brilliant thing about Dry January is that it’s not really about January. Being alcoholfree for 31 days shows us that we don’t need alcohol to have fun, to relax, to socialise. That means that for the rest of the year we are better able to make decisions about our drinking, and to avoid slipping into drinking more than we really want to. “Many of us know about the health risks of alcohol – seven forms of cancer, liver disease, mental health problems – but we are often unaware that drinking less has more immediate benefits too. Sleeping better, feeling more energetic, saving money, better skin, losing weight… The list goes on. Collyer’s reward outstanding students!

At the annual Collyer’s Prize Giving ceremony, successful students have been rewarded for their 2018 achievements at the college. The event was attended by students, teachers, parents and other members of the Collyer’s community. Music was provided by students Vila Zhang and Matthew Luk. Presentation of the awards was made by Chair of the Governing Body, Dr David Skipp, Vice Chair Ann Donoghue, Chair of Trustees, Chris Clementi, and Dave Picknell from the Old Collyerian’s Association, Jenny Gammon (Horsham Town Twinning Association) and Claire Howard. The event was brilliantly organised by Collyer’s Linda MacLeman and Rachel Gander, with help on the day from former Collyer’s student Molly Moss. The Mercer’s School Memorial Prize (The Merrett Bequest), awarded by the Mercer’s Company, was presented to Jenny Fletcher; recipients of the Mercers’ Exhibition Prize, awarded by the Trustees of the Collyer’s Foundation, were: Charlie Brooker, Emma Simmons, Oscar Bray, Reece Packham, Alice Chen and Richard Potter. The Trustees’ Curriculum Prize, also awarded by the Trustees of the Collyer’s Foundation, was presented to: Anna Bodrenkova, Amelia Venturini, Elena Davis, Daniel Brown, Chloe Flintham; Harvey Haydon, Oliver Heinrich, Tom Jarman, Ceri Pennington, Alexandra Holden; Harry Adams, Samuel Carter, William Francis, Israel Harding; Ella Lucas and Dominic Marks. Emily Hedges picked up the prize for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts and college prizes for Excellence in Level 3 Vocational Courses was awarded to Anais Bassett, with the prize for Excellence in Level 2 Vocational Courses going to Megan Chandler. The College Prize for Early Years was presented to Jasmine Chambers, Matthew Coates won the Academic Progress prize, Sheena Stoner picked up the Excellence in Access prize, while Csilla Farkasfalvi was awarded the Special Achievement in Adult Education prize. The Vivien Martin Prize for Special Achievement was awarded to Bilal Qureshi and Olivia Ward was awarded the Adam Howard Law Prize, set up in memory of a very promising law student, and kindly presented by his mum, Claire. The Collyer’s Young Enterprise Team: Dan Goodyer, Tom Williams, Fraser Relleen and Patrick Smith were delighted to receive the Business Prize for Entrepreneurship, with Daniel Butler awarded the prize for Strategic Management. President of the Old Collyerian’s Association, Mr Dave Picknell, presented the Old Collyerian’s Awards (OCA) to Darcy Davies, winning the award for the OCA Outstanding Extra-Curricular Achievement Prize, and Nadia Henning won the OCA Creative Writing Prize. The Chris Clementi Music Prize was presented to Nicholas Hoad, and the College Language prizes were awarded to Samuel Willis (French), Sean Cavallo (German) and Jessica Collett (Spanish). Recipients of Outstanding Contribution to College (Mercers’ Award) prizes were: Ed Cray, Chloe Gardner, Jack Manger, Ed Pirie, Charlie O’Neil and Tom Wheatland. The Brian Alner Prize for Careers was awarded to Dan Goodyer, Andy Clement picked up

the Brian Alner Prize for Geography. The 2018 Alumni Prize, for an ex student who has continued to keep in touch and support the college, went to Ella McEwan. Ella is one of country’s leading costume designers for TV and film, and created many worn in the new Mary Poppins movie! Ella told the audience: “It’s important to love your job and I love my job. Thank-you Collyer’s!” DofE Gold Certificate winners celebrated on the night were: Natalie Crundwell, Louise Dafour, Lauren Green, Freya Mackins, Rachel Partridge; Kate Philps, Amelia Smith, Charlie Brooker and James Hartley. Principal, Sally Bromley, who hosted the ceremony, said: “The Prizegiving event celebrates the wide range of student achievement at Collyer’s. Many students excelled academically, achieving 4 A* A levels and are now studying at Oxford, Cambridge and other prestigious universities, but the range of our students’ achievements do not end there. Students are awarded prizes for the way they engaged in activities outside the classroom, in clubs and societies, sport, music and drama, or the way they supported other students in their studies while persevering with their own. They are all truly awe inspiring young people and all at Collyer’s are extremely proud of them. “Collyer’s really is just a brilliant place. Horsham Lions Club support Horsham’s most needy

Horsham Lions Club and their supporters have worked extremely hard throughout December 2018 to ensure those in most need in our Horsham Community have an enjoyable Christmas. To start with, and with the help of Horsham District Council, Saxon Weald and Safe Sussex, ( The Women’s Refuge) 58 of the most needy families living in Horsham were identified and provided with food parcels. These 58 families, which have a total of 141 members under the age of 16 years, were provided with suitable presents to

Horsham Lions Club also became aware, through Hilary Benham of West Sussex County Council, Leaving Care North Team had some 8 young people who had been in care for some, if not most, of their lives and had reached the age of 18, which means they became independent of the Social Care System. To provide these young people with a suitable send off into “The Big Wide World” Horsham Lions provided the funds to pay for a Christmas Lunch and Party, which took place on Saturday 1 December 2018, as well as a small present in the form of a Gift Card to purchase some warm clothing of their choice. The Total Cost of These two projects was £3354.00, courtesy of Christmas & Santa Collections held between 2 and 24 December at various locations around Horsham. The Collections started in the rain on Sunday evening, 2 December, with Father Christmas and his Horsham Lions Helpers in The Cedar Drive Area of Southwater and collections continued in the following manner: Sainsbury’s Store Horsham on 7 & 8 December, a Santa Collection in the Lemmington Way Area of North Horsham, starting at Bartho-

lomew Way on 9 December. This was followed by collections at Newbridge Nurseries at Broadbridge Heath on 13 December, Waitrose Supermarket on 14 December, Newbridge Nursery’s on 20 December, Waitrose on 21 & 22 December and finally Tesco Super Store on Christmas Eve. The total amount raised from the above collections throughout December 2018 is £4714.13. At the time of going to press Horsham Lions is still awaiting the amounts raised through their Christmas Hamper Raffle, which is undertaken by 10 local pubs and businesses. Lion President, Clare Wilson, said: “On behalf of Horsham Lions Members, our thanks to the generosity of the People of Horsham, which has meant that a significant number of the most needy in our Community have been helped and provided with a brighter Christmas as a result. Millais School Pantomime On the last day of term lessons were suspended as Staff and Prefects presented the ever popular annual pantomime to all pupils at Millais School. This involved three separate performances, with plenty of audience participation, in the magic of a traditional pantomime story, which this year was Peter Pan Special. There was plenty of hissing and booing for the baddies, Captain Hook and his fellow pirate Smee. The other baddie or goodie, depending on how you see it, was the colourful Crocodile, with a taste for Hook! Peter Pan and Wendy provided a romantic element in a fun way, with support from the good fairy, Fairy Nuff - nice to see you, to see you

NICE! There were Indians chasing Pirates and Lost Boys looking lost. Tiger Lily got ‘roped in’ as it were, and got some funny answers to some funny questions. Moppy, the housemaid, was a scream in her spectacular outfit. To complete the pantomime mix there was Nana the dog, an aggressive banana, a haunting skeleton pirate and a moving mobile phone. Music spectacular items were the Prefect’s Dance, the Languages Dance and the Prefect’s Chorus who introduced each scene in a colourful, vibrant and lively presentation. There was a surprise happy ending for all, then the performers and audience joined in enthusiastically singing the seasonal Jingle Bell Rock.

A message from The Rotary Club of Horsham Thanks to the Press, the People of Horsham….and Piles of Pancakes Firstly, may we wish all the people of Horsham a superb 2019 and thank you for your fantastic support in 2019. We also would like to thank everyone associated with Horsham’s Year of Culture 2019 for organising such an exciting array of wonderful events and we wish all participants every success with the venture. December was a very busy month for the Rotary Club of Horsham, and the Club thanks everyone who contributed to their street collections, which raised nearly £6500. Les and Dee Searle’s 1922 steam bus was a popular feature in the town on the first Sunday, and Club members also collected at Waitrose, Tesco and Newbridge Nurseries, as well as in the town centre and local neighbourhoods. We have to thank the Explorer Scout Groups Titan and Europa for their tremendous help with our collections, especially the

evenings around the streets in the pouring rain. They also helped with many other events including Funday Sunday. “The people of Horsham are very generous and we really appreciate their contributions to our charity work” said Rotary Secretary Dave Smith. As well as providing Food Vouchers for needy families at Christmas, proceeds from the collections will help local families as part of the Club’s “Making a Difference” scheme, which donates small sums to local people where a little help will make a significant difference in their lives. Over 450 requests have been fulfilled during the 8 years since the scheme’s inception, with a total of over £90,000 having been donated. We work with various organisations such as CAB, Social Services, Debt Advisory Services, Y Centre and many others in this area and the

main difference we can make is reacting very quickly with no bureaucracy or red tape to small re-

The Club as usual also organised Horsham’s annual Pancake Races and took part in Horsham’s ‘Piazza Italia and ‘Americarna’ with our popular slot car fundraising, at which we were assisted by our friends from the Explorer Scouts. Set4Success, our subsidiary charity that supports talented young sports people who live or go to school in the Horsham District, presented a further 17 Awards at a ceremony at South Lodge Hotel with special guest, BBC Sports Commentator Simon Brotherton . In total we have now presented 170 Awards covering more than 38 sports. In addition, Neilcott Development, who completed the building of “The Bridge” - the new leisure centre for Broadbridge Heath -

sponsored the charity and this year’s ‘Neilcott Trophy’ award was presented to Emily Orman who had an incredibly successful year in goal for Brighton & Hove and England. Several recipients of a Set4Success Award have gone on to achieve great success and represent their countries….with many more in the pipeline. Set4Success is a partnership between Horsham Rotary Club, Horsham Council, local schools headed by Millais, and local Businesses including Spofforths, ATOM, Wakefields Jewellers, PfP Leisure, Treetop Design and Print, AAH Magazine and Tactic Counsel. Picturing the District: Horsham Museum and Art Gallery exhibition opens This weekend

It shows how the everyday is in fact remarkable; from a cottage in Slinfold that caught Gillian Hobbs’ eye, to one in Amberley that inspired R B Wilson to pick up the brush; and why graves in a cemetery in the very centre of the district are so evocative, as seen by Gordon Rushmer. Over the last 250 years, the art world has been transformed, from the introduction of water colours to contemporary art, with all the various art movements in between. Yet one thing has remained constant; the desire to paint landscapes, to capture that magical essence that makes all of us stand and stop to take in what we see. For Sidney Moss (RBA) it can be the industrial workings of Amberley chalk pits, or for Mr Heath, the windmill at Shipley. For others, it can be the village high street, from Amy Scott’s Bramber to Roxby Bott’s Billingshurst, a village that also inspired Fox. There is inspiration across the District, including a back garden in Henfield by Mrs Wells. Artists have flocked to Horsham district, inspired by the peoples and places, to create a varied canvas that portrays a district of great personality and colour. Picturing the district is a masterpiece created out of local scenes that has many surprises. 250 years ago, an artist, George Robertson, who had been in the Caribbean painting the rich vibrant colours of tropical light, came to Horsham and painted Warnham Mill Bridge. Remarkably, the fantastic painting of the nondescript bridge with anglers has survived and now takes centre stage in the fascinating, colourful and inspiring exhibition. The ‘how’ it has survived and ‘why’ it was painted makes the superbly executed painting even more interesting. It also acts as a perfect introduction to this colourful exhibition as it gives a hidden depth to the art on display. So, whilst the visitor can admire the scenes, the unknown back stories add a sense of mystery to the images. Two high street shops fined £20k each over dangerous adaptors Two major firms have each been ordered to pay more than £20,000 in fines and costs after selling dangerous travel adaptors. TJK UK Ltd, which trades under TK Maxx, and IT Luggage Limited both pleaded guilty in separate cases at Brighton Magistrates Court on December 12 following investigations by West Sussex Trading Standards. Officers bought travel adaptors in January 2018 from various outlets, including the TK Maxx in Worthing and Bags etc. in Horsham, after concerns over the safety of these products. Testing showed several safety failings including the risk of electric shock. Peter Aston, Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “The seriousness of these offences is reflected in the fines these firms have been ordered to pay. “These travel adaptors failed safety testing which means they could cause electrocution and potentially death to an unsuspecting user. “We usually advise people to only buy electrical products from a recognised brand

or high street retailer but as this case proves, that doesn’t always guarantee safety.” Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “It is very worrying to see two big high street retailers selling these dangerous products. “I am relieved that all the adaptors have been recalled and that the firms in question have been fined. “It is of absolute importance that businesses thoroughly test any electrical products before they are sold.” TK Maxx mistakenly treated the adaptors as ‘fashion accessories’ on their system which meant they were not subject to the store’s usual safety checks. IT Luggage Ltd was unaware of the safety requirements relating to this product so carried out no checks when importing them from China. Both companies recalled the products once informed of the results of testing. Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra: New Year’s Eve review Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, New Year’s Eve Viennese Gala, The Dome, Brighton, 31 December 2018. The delighted audience at Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s heart-warming New Year concert must have been glad Ilona Domnich swapped piano for a career as a top singer. Domnich’s sometimes delicate, often dynamic and always delightful lyric coloratura soprano sprinkled magic over the highly-entertaining New Year’s Eve Viennese Gala at the Dome. With charm and poise, Domnich widened the horizons beyond Austria with songs like Ivor Novello’s Waltz of My Heart. Many of the tunes in this concert were popular among radio listeners in the 1950s and early 1960s and for some of the older people in the audience it must have sounded like listening to the old Light Programme. Tunes such as Unter Donner und Blitz Polka, the Lehar Gold and Silver Waltz and the opening Overture to Die Fledermaus jogged a few distant memories and were immaculately performed by the musicians. The inclusion of some English pieces proved a huge success, with the chiming Westminster Waltz and cascading strings of Charmaine

utterly charming. Domnich wasted no opportunity to display her considerable vocal agility in Lehar’s classic aria Meine Lippen, with its drama and high notes leaping towards the Heavens. The up-tempo Laughing Song was perfect showing off material for pitch-perfect “ha-ha-ha” notes while the longing of the Oscar Straus song My Hero, was captured in a piece which could have exposed any vocal weakness. None of Domnich’s power was delivered at the expense of tone, which remained controlled wherever the melody roamed. All this and a stunning encore too. Conductor Richard Balcombe kept a light hand on the tiller but also coaxed urgency from pieces like Czardas with Domnich showing a touch of gypsy fireside. A hushed section of the Gold and Silver Waltz showed typically good control of the orchestra’s dynamics, which only rarely threatened the soloist. Amidst all the inspiring quality principal cellist Peter Adams delivered an immaculate and soulful solo in Von Suppe’s Morning, Noon and Night In Vienna. This captivating concert, without a dud moment, was a great way to beckon in 2019 and the appreciative audience let the musicians know it. Phil Dennett

No Jacket Required bring their Serious Hits UK Tour to The Hawth this January Phil Collins is one of the most successful recording artists of all time – a string of worldwide number one albums and singles resulted in multi-million sales and a succession of prestigious music industry awards during his 40-year career. In fact, Collins is one of only three artists to have sold over 100 million albums as a solo artist and as part of a band – the others being Sir Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. When, in March 2011, Phil Collins announced his retirement, it led many to re-evaluate his considerable musical legacy. So much so that it brought him out of retirement in 2017 to perform a short series of shows across Europe to his fans, both old and new. It’s unlikely to be a permanent return to the stage for Phil, but fortunately No Jacket Required, the UK’s leading Phil Collins tribute, is continuing to perform his music in their faithful recreation of his live shows. No Jacket Required frontman, Dave Whitehouse, said: “It’s a real pleasure and privilege to perform such great music. There’s so much to choose from, it’s hard to decide what to leave out of our

shows!” Formed in 2002, the band has performed all over the country as well as overseas, to appreciative full houses. Prior to that, Dave spent five years in a Genesis tribute, making him the UK’s most established Phil Collins tribute artist. The band clearly takes its work seriously and has seen Collins perform on over 30 occasions in order to hone their take on the superstar singing drummer. Whitehouse even met Phil Collins prior to one of his arena shows in Germany while in preparation for a show he performed later in Luxembourg: “He was extremely generous with his time and wished me well for my show. It was a special moment and great to be able to thank him for the pleasure his music has given me and so many others”. So what can you expect from the UK’s leading Phil Collins tribute? Dave explained: “A No Jacket Required show lasts over two hours and we perform all the hits plus a few lesser-known album tracks. “Our line-up replicates Phil’s own live shows – we are an 11-piece band with a full brass

section and backing vocalists. While the emphasis is on the music, it’s also a live spectacle and we all have a lot of fun. Our audience is made up of all ages, from 8 to 80 – there’s something for everyone in our shows”. The band celebrated their 15th Anniversary last year, and the band’s founder, drummer Graham Goacher, revealed that the whole project was originally just a oneoff: “There were no full live band tributes to Phil Collins back at the turn of the century. Just as there are now, there are plenty of guys using backing tracks and singing along – but we wondered whether we could get a full live 10-piece band together. We weren’t really sure whether it would come together and so originally we just tried it once to see whether we could get the show to work!” The band has now clocked up almost 200 performances which have taken them around the UK and even abroad. “It’s really special to be returning to The Hawth. Many of the band hail from West Sussex and so it’s always a great night playing at a lovely venue in front of a home audience who are always so supportive” - Guitarist, Vic Chase.

No Jacket Required even follow in Phil’s footsteps by raising money for homelessness. They have been supporting The Bridge Trust in West Kent for many years and recently passed the £30,000 mark for their donations: “Another Day In Paradise is a classic Phil Collins track in that it has a message which connects with the listener on a personal level, like so many of his songs”, explained Whitehouse, “We perform it at every show and it seemed apt for

us to collect for a homelessness charity too. Phil has done so much for charity over the years and it’s a cause which he is well-known for supporting.” The band’s brochure and merchandise will be on sale at the show, with all monies raised going to the Bridge Trust. The Ariel Othellos push the Performance Boundaries

This year’s Ariel Othellos showcase is being rated as the best ever. Packed with creativity, the lasting impression is of a show which took risks and pushed the boundaries. There were no simplistic lines of singers, or dancers and actors performing uncomplicated pieces; every number within this show was challenging, whether it was intricate choreography or drama pieces with evocative acting and lots of lines. The Othellos students, who are aged from 5 up to young adult, rose to the challenge and produced an outstanding show. All the Othellos students who performed on the Hawth’s main stage have special educational or physical needs but with the assistance of their Buddies, none were daunted by the task in hand. The opening number used fluorescent light sabres and

lights attached to wheelchairs to create the alien invasion in musical theatre number ‘War of the Worlds’. Through their great acting skills the students created the threatening mood and prospect of what an invasion from another planet would be like. Likewise, hit musical Tommy saw the young character breaking through the taunts of others to become a hero and pinball wizard. Fulfilling a big vocal challenge the students filled the venue making an impact with these strong numbers. Throughout the evening, the cast sung with soul recreating inspirational numbers from Lady Gaga’s ‘Born this Way’ to a James Bond medley and War Time classics to Fleetwood Mac’s popular song ‘Landslide’. On several numbers the performances were enriched with support from Ariel’s choir and Ariel’s contemporary dance group, adding depth

and more magical choreography. The diversity of the song choices added to the strength of the show and allowed each student to shine in either a lead role or as part of the ensemble. The end of the first act was brought to a dramatic end with percussion instruments and metal upturned refuse bins, used as drums to create a cacophony of sound and rhythm which had the audience cheering with number ‘Run Boy Run’. The acting talents of the Othello students were demonstrated throughout and two students were courageous enough to perform their solo LAMDA exam pieces, both were intricate monologues which were superbly delivered. Fun and enjoyment shone in all the actors’ faces as they captured the audience with their energetic performances of Legally Blonde and West Side Story, everyone kept in character and were clearly having the time of their life. The cast’s enthusiasm for theatre was never more apparent than in the finale piece ‘This is Me’ from the Greatest Showman, from the youngest to the oldest it was clear that everyone was having a night they would remember. Artistic Director, Nicci Hopson, said: “This show was packed with variety and challenging numbers and I am so delighted that it all came together. It takes a huge team to put on a show of this magnitude and I would like to thank the Othellos students, the buddies, our tutors, the Ariel choirs and dancers and our fantastic technical team for producing an unforgettable show.’ Ariel offers free trials for anyone interested in joining the
