Official launch of Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 Crowds gathered at the official launch event for Horsham District’s 2019 Year of Culture celebrations in Horsham Park on Saturday 5 January. The free to attend launch event saw live entertainments throughout the afternoon, with the opportunity to meet the Year of Culture team to find out more about just what the Year of Culture will have on offer throughout 2019. The Year of Culture was officially declared open with a countdown by Horsham District Council’s Chairman Cllr Peter Burgess, before a unique laser light show projected from Park House over Horsham’s iconic park. The District is now well and truly set for a unique year of widespread cultural celebration which will see our District showcase world class musicians, multimillion selling authors and high profile actors alongside local brewers holding barnstorming music nights, ukulele jams, children’s parades, classical concerts, innovative sculptural installations and much more. There will be a number of major ‘firsts’ for the District as part of the Year. The first ever large scale outdoor performance

of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream (which will take place at Knepp Castle), the first ever Horsham Film Festival, the first ever Sussex Comedian of the Year competition, and the first ever project to include projections and lights in a variety of town and village locations. Commenting on the launch event, Horsham District Council Chairman, Cllr Peter Burgess, said: “Thanks to the many of you who came along on Saturday to enjoy our launch event and find out more about how they can get involved with the Year of Culture. “The event provided a great flavour of things to come throughout 2019. What I think is particularly inspiring is that the vast range of events and activities on offer are not just for people to go and watch, but people can also take part in themselves too – for many, they will be trying things out for the first time and finding they may have hidden talents. “It’s also great that lots of the activities are completely free to attend for all to enjoy. “I would encourage as many of you as possible to check out all the activities and events on offer. “Enjoy the year!” More on page 2

Next to relocate to Swan Walk this Spring

Following on from the closure of BHS in 2016 many were wondering what would fill the void left by the former retail giant. Well the time has come for that question to be answered. It has been announced that Next will vacate their West Street premises and bring their business into Swan Walk in 2019. It is all part of the exciting plans to redevelop the shopping centre and give consumers more choice in the town as along with Next there are aspirations to add some more retailers and a gym, alongside these there will also be new baby change areas as well as new toilet facilities. It is a great step forward for the town as along with the Piries place development work, Horsham is making a great statement to residents and businesses alike that it really can be a destination town. Camilla Hinds, asset manager at Aviva Investors said, “We’re delighted to be able to share the

news of the upcoming arrival of Next to Swan Walk which further strengthens the strong retail lineup within the centre. We’ve been working hard to redevelop the former BHS unit and being able to bring an 18,000 sq.ft two-storey Next store to the centre really demonstrates our commitment to improve the shopping experience for our customers and the strength of the scheme in attracting the best retailers.” Whilst Gill Buchanan, centre manager at Swan Walk said, ““Here at Swan Walk, we’re at the heart of the community and really champion shopping locally. “This is a huge next step in the continued evolution and growth of Swan Walk and it’s such an exciting time for Next to be joining a line-up that includes M&S, Boots, Fat Face, H&M, Pandora and Smiggle, to name just a few of our brands.” Next have now started work on fitting the shop and we are due to see its doors open Spring 2019.

Huge thankyou to our contributors: Horsham Rocks, Nick Evans, Clive Turner, Tim Hewlett & John Lines

A scout group based in Horsham has been rewarded with £500 after winning a public vote to receive funding via an initiative organised by local builders’ merchant D.W. Nye. D.W. Nye’s Proud to be Local campaign was set up to support worthy causes, charities and groups in the local area. The builders’ merchant has already donated £1500 to three other community groups this year. 2nd Horsham Scout Group, which will be presented with £500, joined 4TheYouth, Holbrook Animal Rescue and Jack & Jill Pre-School – all based in Horsham – as the fourth and final winner of 2018. Caroline McCurrach, Assistant Group Scout Leader at 2nd Horsham Scout Group, said: “2nd Horsham Scout Group are excited to hear about the £500 from D.W.Nye ‘Proud To Be Local’ campaign. This will be a big boost to our fundraising for improvements to our scout

hut, where over 100 local girls and boys learn our ‘Skills for Life’ strategy. The 2nd Horsham Scout Hut is also home to a nursery, karate club, Brownies, Rainbows and other groups - so it is a real community space which will benefit from this win. Thank you to D.W.Nye.” Rex Nye, Managing Director at D.W. Nye, added: “Huge congratulations to the 2nd Horsham Scout Group. It has been an absolute pleasure to help so many deserving charities and groups during 2018, and I hope the funding makes a big difference to the important work they do for the community. We are looking forward to supporting more worthy causes in 2019.” D.W. Nye’s Proud to be Local campaign will give away £500 to a further four local causes in 2019 and is now open for nominations. Nominations should be emailed to proudtobelocal@dwnye.co.uk before 31 January 2019.

Work began this week on the site of the former Sussex Bed Centre. Following on from the grant of planning permission by Horsham District Council in October of last year, work is now well underway

to develop the site with a planned store opening for the end of 2019. Horsham is continually attracting more brands to town and Lidl has long been on the wish list of many shoppers.

Educational leaders discuss ‘worthless?’and ‘#raise the rate campaigns’

Jules White, Head Teacher at Tanbridge House School, and Sally Bromley, principal at The College of Richard Collyer, have met to discuss the chronic underfunding of education and how their campaigns for significant education spend by the Treasury can support one another. The #Raisetherate Campaign highlights how sixth form funding is in crisis. Two deep cuts to funding were made after 2010 and the national funding rate (‘the rate’) for 16 and 17 year olds has been frozen at £4,000 per student, per year since 2013. Funding for 18 year olds was cut to just £3,300 per student in 2014. The running

costs of schools and colleges have increased sharply since 2010 and the government has imposed a range of new requirements on institutions. This has left much less money for schools and colleges to spend on the front line education of students, at a time when the needs of young people have become increasingly complex (for example the sharp rise in students experiencing mental health problems). Research from London Economics has shown that the rate needs to increase by at least £760 per student, per year, to ensure that schools and colleges can continue to deliver a high qual-

We’d love you to join us for an evening of live music and dancing at The Holbrook Club compared by the wonderful Tim Fifield and Sponsored by Courtney Gree on the 19th January. The evening will kick off with a great selection of acoustic numbers performed by Horsham’s hugely talented Brent Yeomans, followed by established local covers band Rapscallion, who will entertain us with a wide range of classic Rock, Rock and Roll and Pop tracks from the 50’s to the 80’s - so there’ll be something for everyone. This event is being held in

support of Philippa Charman’s ‘Daring to Dream’ to raise funds for Philippa to undergo hematopoietic stem cell transplant treatment. Since 1999, Philippa has bravely battled with multiple sclerosis. Despite always remaining positive and determined, this has inevitably put huge restrictions on her day to day life. Now Philippa is ‘daring to dream’ that revolutionary stem cell treatment will help her to have some of her old life back again. The transplant is not available to Philippa on the NHS, so she is travelling abroad for the treatment and a group of her friends are madly

ity, internationally-competitive education. The campaign calls on the government to make two commitments in the 2019 spending review: Raise the rate for 16, 17 and 18 year old students to at least £4,760 per year and then raise the rate in line with inflation each year. Sally Bromley said: “The ongoing underinvestment in sixth form education is bad for students, bad for our international competitiveness and bad for social mobility. We are calling on the government to #raisetherate – before it’s too late.” Jules White has been spearheading the Worthless? Campaign, initially a county wide campaign, but now with national support, since 2016. Jules’s response to the Secretary of State’s announcement last month, to increase funding for students with a Special Education Need, was hard hitting: “The funding for both SEND and High Needs pupils has been woefully lacking in recent years. Demand for Local Authority High Needs funding has grown by 35% in just four years, whilst mainstream schools have seen their budgets savaged by 8% real terms cuts since 2010. “As a consequence, the most vulnerable children and their families in our country have seen support stripped back beyond any reasonable levels and a ‘SEND crisis’ is upon us.”

Robert Mayfield

A well respected resident from Horsham has sadly passed away. An author and a large contributor to music and arts in the area, Robert Mayfield will be sorely missed by all that knew him and the many he came into contact with. Having been somewhat of a pioneer with his tablet ocarina project for the blind it was clear that Robert was one keen to share his knowledge

and passion of music to help others as well as maintain his own personal enjoyment. The founder of a charity and author of Children’s stories, “The flying castle” Robert was always looking to give something back to a community he was close to. Shipley Scouts showered with generosity as new site facilties become reality

After a busy year of fundraising and planning, a local Scout group is celebrating the start of an ambitious new building project at its West Sussex HQ. The 1st Shipley group, based at Dragons Green, near Horsham, has long dreamed of building a shower block at its rural site, but the estimated costs of around £40,000

meant the project seemed out of reach. Now, thanks to the fundraising work of the troop and the amazing generosity of local people and businesses, the building is finally underway. Once completed, the new shower and toilet facilities will not only benefit the sixty-plus children and young people who belong to 1st Shipley Scouts, it will also enable the group to open their impressive grounds to the wider community for camping and outdoor adventures. Julian Peters, the troop’s Group Scout Leader, said: “We know we are lucky to have such a wonderful location, and started to think how we might not only improve our facilities for our young people, but perhaps do something that meant we could share our site with others. “The new timber-clad shower block will have disabled facilities, allowing us to welcome all young people, including wheelchair users.

It’s been an incredible challenge to get to this point, and we are so grateful to all our supporters for helping to make this dream a reality.” Among the donors were Billingshurst Lions, who gave a generous grant of £5,000. Billingshurst Lions President Andrew Viall, who visited the site as the first foundations were laid on Thursday (January 4), said: “We loved the idea of a local Scout troop not only securing facilities for themselves but also having the ambition to share what they have with others. We were particularly impressed with 1st Shipley’s ambition to host their facilities for people with differing abilities. We thought this an excellent example for others to follow, and certainly in the true tradition of Scouting and all it stands for, so were delighted to help out.” Other generous donors of funds, materials or expert advice include John Verrall of Penfold Verrall Ltd,

Funding was also secured through West Sussex County Council’s Community Initiative Fund following a referral from Amanda Jupp, and the Tesco Broadbridge Heath community grant scheme. Scouts, their leaders and families also worked hard to put on a number of fundraising events during 2018. Julian explained: “Numerous marquees were put up, there were fetes, sponsored walks, catering, carol singing and raffles all organised to help the cause. Along with this, we made our ambitions known to our local community and were so honoured to receive significant support from other organisations who shared our passion. We’re hugely grateful to each and every supporter.” Despite best efforts to complete the project in 2018, it proved to be

much more of a logistical challenge than initially envisaged. Planning permission had to be agreed, and the location of the eventual build changed several times to adhere to planning regulations. Now the project is underway and it is hoped it will be completed by the spring. The new facilities will complement the 1st Shipley Scout hut, which itself underwent major renovations recently after decades of weather had taken its toll on the thatched roof. Julian added: “2019 is our 85th year, and what better way to mark the anniversary than by opening this new facility. Rest assured we will plan further events and celebrations when the work is completed.” If you are interested in getting involved in the project, or would like to find out more about 1st Shipley Scouts, please email Peter Sutton at peter.sutton@pmwcom. co.uk.

Horsham Rotary Club President, William Harmsworth, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for 2019, for his 35 years’ service as a magistrate and for over 50 years of voluntary work in the community. It was in 1983, aged 35, that William became one of the youngest magistrates in Surrey and went on to sit on both the youth and adult benches at Redhill Magistrates’ Court. William, who retired from the bench last year, aged 70, built up a reputation of being a fair magistrate who earned great respect from both the defendants who came before him and his fellow colleagues. William has also given many years of service to the Scouts, having been appointed as a Scout Adult Leader in 1966 after gaining his Queen’s Scouts Award. William has continued his involvement in the Scouts to the present day and is currently a member of his District Scout Council, as well as being a member of the Appointments Team. William has been awarded a forty year service Medal of Merit in recognition of his work in the Scout movement. In 1996, William became a member of the Rotary Club of

Redhill Reigate and Horley, which was at the time the youngest club in the Rotary District; the club grew to become an active and dominate part of the community. William became Club President in 2001 and subsequently was invited to join the Rotary District Team in 2005, being elected District Governor in 2012. Due to business commitments, William transferred his Rotary membership to Horsham, where he is currently the Club President, helping Horsham Rotary to continue to play a significant role within the Horsham community. Through his Scouting connections, William is a life member of the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians and is actively involved in advancing the Scouts relationship with Rotary, locally, nationally, and internationally, to better their communities. William was particularly pleased to see the recent huge support from Horsham Scout Groups given to the Horsham Rotary Club Christmas collections, which raised nearly £6500; the money going to help the less fortunate in our community. William also serves as an active member of his Parish Council. In addition, after suffering a stroke in 2003, he is an ambassador for the Stroke Association, giving talks to local groups about surviving a stroke and what steps individuals can take to help them understand how to prevent stroke occurring. Horsham Rotary Club Secretary, Dave Smith, said: “We are delighted William has been deservedly recognised for his many years of unselfish devotion to his community with an MBE. The characteristics and dedication William has shown over the years mirrors the ethos of Rotary, and has been the major factor in the success he has enjoyed in his professional and voluntary activities.”

It’s not all about Shelley – Year of Culture celebrates diversity of Horsham District’s writing talent One of the world’s greatest poets, Percy Byssche Shelley, does feature in one of 12 highly colourful panels that will be touring the Horsham District libraries, to celebrate literary achievement throughout the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, but Horsham Writers Circle, and Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, know that the District’s literary heritage is far more diverse and surprising... 11 other illustrative panels tell a remarkable story, spanning 400 years of the District’s connection with the written word, featuring a host of other notable writers. The story includes a Southwater born publisher whose shop featured in a Hogarth etching. That publisher, Lintott, changed the look of 18th century books and helped create the idea of a writer earning a living from writing. Some 200 years later, a bohemian acolyte of the satanic, Allister Crowley, whose fame grew thanks to 1970s rock music, came to live in Vine Cottage in Steyning, where he created The Vine Press, publishing a number of his own works. Victor Nueberg’s Steyning born son would become a literary figure in his own right - thanks to his research on 18th century books. These books, and many many others, would

be collected by one of the 20th century’s greatest book collectors, Major Abbey, who lived at Greyfriers, Strorrington. He features on a literary miscellany panel that recounts a Sherlock Holmes story which mentions Horsham and Sussex farms. Conan Doyle’s brother- in-law lived at Partridge Green, where he would write about his war time experiences. Prior to that, E W Hornung had a very successful literary career writing Raffles books. His success, though, probably didn’t match the sales of Horsham born Hammond Inness or James Herbert, who lived at Woodmancote, both of whom have their own panels. The panels, which include the writers Eliza Cook, who lived in St Leonards Forest, and Louisa Maria M Hubbard, who lived in Leonardslee, will be on display at various times throughout 2019 in the West Sussex County Council libraries within the Horsham District. The Library Service, working in partnership with Horsham Writers Circle, are creating activities and events that help to engage with the written word. Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum have created the series of panels incorporating the written words by members of the Hor-

sham Writers Circle and books from the Museum’s collection, a number of which were acquired in time for the panels and a major exhibition taking place from March to June 2019. One such book, a volume of the magazine Work and Leisure The Englishwoman’s Advertiser, Reporter, edited by Louisa Hubbard was discovered (thanks to the internet) in Canada, owned by the Englefield Working Men’s Club, likely because of the articles in the book on emigration to Canada. All of the panels on show are illustrated with images especially photographed by Toby Phillips, as a resource for the Year of Culture and future displays. They combine photographs of books, portraits and examples of the written word by various authors. Horsham District has attracted a number of writers to its villages, from William Browne, in the early 17th century, who married Timothy Eversfield (daughter of Sir Thomas Eversfield, of Denne Park), to Julia Donaldson CBE, who moved to the District some five years ago. Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, commented: “I am delighted that the Horsham District Year of Culture has facilitated such a unique and impressive display of literary

talent to be shared and enjoyed by everyone who visits our local libraries throughout 2019. “These literary panels will also leave a lasting legacy long after the 2019 year of celebration. An amazing tribute to the considerable writing talent of our District.” The 12 panels touch on a few of these writers, but there are many more who could be mentioned. Horsham Writers’ Circle and West Sussex Library Service are enabling that to happen through their events and activities throughout the Horsham District Year of Culture, whilst Steyning Bookshop and Waterstones in Horsham have a wide range of books written by local authors. Just waiting to be taken home and enjoyed.

You run with your heart as much as your legs

Alex Heminsley, best selling author and journalist, is calling on people to lace up their trainers and support St Catherine’s Hospice by running for them in the London Marathon. Here, she shares why running for a worthy cause like one of her local hospices, St Catherine’s, can benefit you when the marathon gets tough. “It was 2007 when I decided to challenge myself to start running. I’d never been for a proper run before and I could barely make it to the end of the road at first. But I’m proof that anyone can run. I used to think that being a runner was something that you were born with. But then I realised that all you actually have to do to be a

runner is to run. And I’m so glad I took those first running steps because it’s changed my life. In six years, I’ve run five marathons for charity and it’s something I’d encourage you to do too. Running for a charity, like St Catherine’s, is a beautiful experience; because when you’re running for a purpose, when you don’t want to let people down, and when you know there’s a tangible benefit to completing the marathon, it really helps you. It physically gives you the inspiration and the courage to keep going. If, for example, you’re on mile 12 of the marathon, your knees are hurting, and you’re really tired, knowing that you’re run-

ning to support someone who is terminally ill will remind you how lucky you are to have legs that can carry you. And it will remind you why it’s so important to keep pushing yourself while you can. Knowing your efforts and the money you raise will help people have the best possible end of life experience will make every single ankle twinge, bead of sweat, or time someone swipes your cup at a water station, easier to deal with. On marathon day, thinking of the people you are running for will be forefront in your mind. By then you’ve done your training and you know your legs are strong enough. So it’s what’s going on in your head and your heart that will motivate you through those 26 miles. Because when you run a marathon you run with your heart as much as your legs. A marathon also brings out the best in human beings. And it’s such a special day, as anyone who has run, or cheered from the pavements will know. On the day, you’ll run past people weeping for loved ones, weeping with sheer exhaustion, and weeping with joy as they cross the finish line. Because they’ve done something they never believed was possible. There are so many great things about ticking a marathon off your to-do list, but the very best thing is that for the rest of your life, you’ll know that you’ve done something that’s really made a difference to someone else. That makes every moment of the 26 miles worth it. Running has given me a world of joy. And I hope some of you will run for St Catherine’s this year to experience the same.” To sign up to run for St Catherine’s in this year’s London Marathon, please call Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser, on 01293 583063 or email events@ stch.org.uk

Households in West Sussex urged to avoid common heating myths to save money As the weather turns colder at the start of the New Year, households in West Sussex could miss out on significant savings if they forget to adjust their heating system for the change in temperature. Poor energy use, in particular leaving heating and lights on by mistake for just four hours a week, is estimated to cost (on average) £250 per home every year*. In response, OFTEC, the trade association for oil heating, has issued advice on how to avoid these expensive mistakes, by highlighting some of the most common winter heating myths: Myth 1: Turning the thermostat up high will warm the house more quickly. Fact: When the weather outside gets really cold, you may be tempted to turn your thermostat up to a high temperature –but you shouldn’t need to do this. The house will warm up at the same speed, regardless of what you set it to. Myth 2: It’s cheaper to leave

your heating running at a low temperature than constantly turning it off and on when it gets cold. Fact: Having your heating on when it’s not needed will cost you money so turn it off if it’s not being used! Instead, adjust your timers so it comes on only when you want it to. Myth 3: Turning down individual radiators will save you money. Fact: This is not necessarily the case. If your thermostat is on, radiators will keep working until the room reaches the set temperature. If you want to save money, turn off radiators in rooms you aren’t using. However, keep your main rooms heated as living in a cold house can be bad for your health. Myth 4: Your water needs to be constantly heated during the day or it’ll be cold. Fact: If your water tank is well insulated it will stay warm for several hours. Set your timers so the water is heated an hour or so before you need it at two or three

different times of the day. Myth 5: Only have a technician look at your boiler if it’s not working correctly. Fact: Have your heating system serviced once a year to check it is working correctly and efficiently – this will help avoid a costly repair bill during winter. Make sure you use a GasSafe (for mains gas) or OFTEC (for oil) registered technician who will follow strict industry safety standards. Malcolm Farrow from OFTEC said: “With temperatures beginning to drop rapidly, the temptation is to crank up the heating to the highest setting. However, this can be a costly mistake to make at an already expensive time of year. “So, we’ve set out the facts to bust some of the biggest winter heating misconceptions and help households in West Sussex reduce their energy use and save money on their fuel bills.” For more winter tips, visit www. oilsave.org.uk.

Horsham gears up for more healthy bike rides this year Horsham District Council’s Sports Development team, together with local volunteer ride leaders, are set to organise more healthy bike rides this year, following last year’s successful ‘Horsham District Health Rides’ pilot progamme.

‘Horsham District Health Rides’ are free social bike rides for starter-level cyclists. They are a great way to improve cycling ability, socialise with others and develop new skills. All participants need is a working bicycle and the ability to ride. A hybrid bike is suitable for all rides, but road bikes can be used for ‘on road’ rides. The rides are free of charge, and are supported by leaders who are trained and experienced to adapt to individual rider needs with aspects such as pacing, helping groups gel together appropriately and keeping people safe. Following last year’s pilot programme of health rides, rides for 2019 are being offered over a longer period, from February to November, and new rides have been added to the Programme. Routes around Warnham, via Pedlar’s Way to Southwater,

and to Sumner’s Pond in Barns Green, will be available in addition to the established 6K Shelley ride route and longer two and three hour rides. There will be more emphasis on road riding during winter months and more off-road rides during the summer, spring and autumn. Horsham District Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Jupp, said: “One of our core aims as a council is to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents. “I am delighted that the Healthy Rides Programme was so well received last year and has, therefore, been extended for 2019. “Our District boasts some superbly scenic countryside, and there’s no better way to see it than on two wheels and breathing in fresh air. And as for the health and fitness benefits, few activities can match the fun and low joint impact nature of cycling for achieving personal progress. “I would encourage as many people as possible to sign up and enjoy the considerable benefits of the Programme.” Last year, around 50 participants varying in age from 30 to

70 years took part in the Programme. There is also a strong social aspect to the rides, which are generally enhanced by a café stop on most routes. Bikes of different sizes and types are also available to borrow, free of charge, for those who need them. For less confident or rusty riders, there is also starter training available to help people get back in the swing of bike riding in the confines of Horsham Park. On some of the rides, there is also an educational benefit for those who want to learn while they cycle. The Shelley Rides are led by Thea Bredie, an enthusiast of the early nineteenth century romantic poet Shelley, who shares her knowledge of the birth, christening and work of Shelley during the ride. Anyone wishing to find out more about the Healthy Rides Programme should contact Ian Ford, Horsham District Council’s Sports Development Officer, by email at Ian.ford@horsham.gov. uk or by calling 07764 146338 or visit www.hdsd.org.uk and search ‘Health Rides’.

Lello:Business, Horsham’s number 1 for Office Supplies

make a difference and start giving businesses the chance to save money and receive a better product. An example he commonly comes across is that many companies will get all their products from one supplier rather than shop around, “I look and find all options that save the client money, whether they are just looking to buy a ruler or have a full office refit, lots of clients I had previously secured in my other roles have now joined me at Lello as the savings are huge. It is the commitment to best products and best price that has people more than satisfied with the service.” It makes you wonder why there aren’t lots of other office supply companies doing the same,

Business Russell Bedford Rob J Cole is a bit of a Horsham institution, a kind of go to guy, whether its if you want advice on the best price for office supplies or his take on any alterations to the Wimpy menu he seems to have a detailed and well thought out answer for you. These days though when he isn’t sinking his teeth into a Wimpy burger, he can often be seen frequenting the various networking groups around the area giving people the opportunities to learn about his new company Lello:Business and it’s about Lello that we have decided to meet up and have a chat, sadly not in the local Wimpy.

It is a new venture for Rob but one in an industry that has been part of his life for several years now, prior to this though he was cruising through a variety of roles that helped enhance his confidence, skills and knowledge. Working in a bowling centre, then on to Currys, before heading back to the Bowling industry in a Management role it was in 2006 that he took his first big step, “I went to work in London for Lombard Asset Finance, but in 2008 the finance industry took a bit of a hit. I wasn’t sure what to do as the industry I was in became very difficult to operate in due to the banks not lending. I moved back to Horsham, and started again.” It was this move that got the ball rolling, with a printer low

on ink and taking the advice of his Father, Rob headed to Cartridge World on East Street, which later became Premier PC supplies, “ I needed to print my CV so my Dad told me about this place, I never even knew it was possible to get a cartridge refilled, when I was told the price and paid for it, I was shocked at how much cheaper it was to refill one than buy a new one.” So with some ink under his arm, he went to leave not before noticing a sign on the door, “A sign asked for an Ink technician. I asked to apply and soon after got a call for an interview, I didn’t get the job and felt quite dejected but a few days later I got a call asking if I could come on board in a different role as the business sales rep. I accepted and then the

journey began!” “After 2 years of success where we opened new stores and developed a huge portfolio of business clients a new opportunity arose with another company, this time specialising in all office supplies where a lot more knowledge and experience was picked up.” From 2010-17, Rob fully integrated himself in the industry and took on various roles to help further his opportunities in what he felt was uncharted territory for some, “ A chance to work for a digital marketing company came up in 2017 which was really exciting, I saw a chance for them to expand though and I set up Lello:business,” Armed with a strong support network from the lello:digital team, Rob was aware he could

I look and find all options that save the client money, whether they are just looking to buy a ruler or have a full office refit “We aren’t tied to one supplier, we build up relationships with organisations around the UK and throughout the world, many of which were built through the experience I have gained over the past few years. This then enables us to find the best prices around.” So whilst saving businesses money on everyday essentials Rob wants to see Lello help on a wider platform too, “Local organisations like Schools, nurseries, hospitals and doctors surgeries would also benefit from us, meaning that the money they save can be reinvested in the areas that actually need it. We don’t want to have a customer for just 10 minutes, we want them for 10 years and always provide what they need so that they can be successful and not have to worry about costs as much.” It seems like it is working too, with popular Horsham local, Eamonn Moulding joining Rob and his team the business is expanding and with that expansion comes the opportunity to further increase the customer service as well as sales, “With Eamonn on board it enables us to reach more customers and maintain a great level of service, it also means I can enhance relationships with some of the clients I have built further afield, for example I recently completed a deal with Hilton Lincoln Plaza in Canary Wharf, it impressed me that a company so large, with a huge team of buyers found that we were the best in terms of quality and value.” Big names are joining Rob J Cole’s office supplies revolution and it seems a path many others should be following, if he can save you money whilst delivering the best quality then it makes a lot of sense!

Registration now open for eleventh Horsham Charity Pancake Races

Last year’s winners Harris Lord recruitment

Have fun, support charities and promote your organisation’s role in the local community All local Horsham businesses, charities and other organisations are being invited to enter

teams (preferably in fancy dress) to compete in the ELEVENTH annual Horsham Charity Pancake Race to be held in the Carfax at lunchtime on Thursday 21 February. Organisers pointed out

although not on Shrove Tuesday, the event does fall during half term school holidays and on a market day: “thus we anticipate that families will come and enjoy the entertainment and create a brilliant atmosphere. “The event is once again organised by The Rotary Club of Horsham, in partnership with Horsham District Council, and is aimed at raising money for local Charities that are nominated by the competitors. We are delighted that estate agents Mansell McTaggart have agreed to sponsor this year’s event - a big thank you to them.” The call is going out for Businesses and Organisations to get together a team of four who can enter the 80 metre relay race, using their own frying pan and non- slip shoes. The course is designed to encourage a sensible mix of skill and speed. There will be cups and prizes awarded to the winners on the day, including one for the Best Team Fancy Dress, one for the Best Over 40s Team, one for the Winning Charity Team, one for the Best Individual Fancy Dress, one for the Best Flipper and one for the overall Winning Team. Horsham Rotary Club just beat the Samaritans to win the Waitrose Trophy for the Best Over-40s Team, and Josh Helmsley from Harris Lord was crowned Best Flipper and took home the Rawlison Butler Trophy. St Catherine’s Hospice and the Olive Tree Cancer Unit (Horsham) received monies from the event, as a result of being the most nominated charities by the competing teams and/or winning the Charity Race. Horsham District good causes could be set to benefit from new community lottery Councillors are due to discuss a proposal to introduce a councilrun community lottery scheme at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday 24 January. Horsham District Council has stated it recognises the essential role that voluntary and community groups play in our communities and hopes that the proposed community lottery will help to fund local good causes across the District. Over 30 UK councils have now established lotteries and they have proved to be successful in raising additional funds to support a sustainable voluntary sector. The lottery, if adopted, would be run in conjunction with an external lottery management company, which has expertise in this area and would be responsible for the dayto-day running of the scheme. Commenting on the proposal, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, said: “Supporting the voluntary sector throughout the Horsham District is very much a priority for us as a council. “The ethos of this lottery scheme is all about charities, volunteer groups and not-for-profit organisations. .“It’s all about raising additional funds to support those locally who need it most.”

Following their astounding appearances on the eleventh series of Britain’s Got Talent in 2017, mind reading duo DNA are taking their brand new show called We Know What You’re Thinking out on a UK tour and will be hitting The Hawth Studio on Thursday 7 February. Andrew and Darren, best known as mind reading double act DNA, took the nation by storm when they appeared on Britain’s Got Talent in 2017 with their incredible telepathic ability known as “The Gift”. Wowing the judges, live audience and viewers at home, the duo went on to reach the live finals of the hit ITV talent show. Their first audition has reached almost 10 million YouTube views alone. Performed completely live, they can ask volunteers to concentrate on the name of a celebrity, telephonenumbers, credit card numbers, a word in a book, the name of the street they grew up on, a relative’s name... literally anything. With devastating speed and accuracy, the pair are then able to reveal what that name, number or word is, every time.

Their unique mind reading performances have now been enjoyed by tens of millions of people around the world. Aptly named ’The Gift’, the duo have created a show that will blow minds and prove that the impossible really is possible - but only for them. This brand new show features world exclusive, never before seen material that is being showcased for the very first time! Ahead of their 2019 UK Tour, Andrew and Darren said: “Our audience is the most important part of our show. We want everyone to leave having had a great time and feeling like they’ve experienced something totally amazing. “We’re so excited to share what we’ve spent so much time working on. We’re going to be performing brand new, never before seen, material that will make our audiences question everything they’ve seen before… We can’t wait!” Performance: Thursday 7 February, 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley. Tickets: £17, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth. co.uk.

Danny Wilson (Danny and the Champions of the World, Grand Drive) and Robin Bennett (The Dreaming Spires, Goldrush, Saint Etienne) join forces with Tony Poole (Starry Eyed and Laughing), producer extraordinaire and king of the electric twelve-string Rickenbacker - Their voices, guitars, and songwriting combining to marvellous effect in a collection of songs that began as uplifting acoustic music and grew into something far more wide-ranging and transcendent. Pulling on influences from the ‘60s pop of The Byrds, The Beatles and The Beach Boys, through to the harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, with dashes of Petty and Springsteen thrown in for good measure, perhaps the most remarkable thing is that what shines through all of this is the quality and originality of the songwriting. All three collaborators have had critical acclaim in their own right. Danny Wilson’s credentials go back to his days in Grand Drive with brother Julian, and his consistent high calibre output with his

Champions of the World led them to sweeping the board at the first UK Americana Awards with Album, Artist and Song of the year awards richly deserved; Tony Poole’s Starry Eyed and Laughing were hailed as “the English Byrds” on the back of their two CBS-released albums in the mid-seventies and he has since built an enviable reputation as producer and engineer; Robin Bennett has been relentlessly turning out timeless songs from his Oxfordshire base in bands from Goldrush to The Dreaming Spires, alongside founding two award winning festivals (Truck and Wood) and lending his multi-instrumental skills to other bands, including Saint Etienne. But in Bennett Wilson Poole, the trio seem to have stumbled upon that rarity of ‘the whole being greater than the sum of the parts’. Performance: Wednesday 16 January 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley. Tickets: £16, available from The Hawth Box Office: bnn 01293 553636 and www.hawth. co.uk.

AWAL artist Mailman back with a bang in 2019 Sussex based artist Mailman’s third album S3ASON (season three) represents a significant departure from 2018’s MPG Award nominated double concept album ‘Yang Yin’. It will be released as twelve singles, one for every month of 2019, with the album released on all formats in January 2020. The first single ‘When Is Enough’ comes out in all digital stores on 18th January with follow up single ‘Everybody Loves You’ scheduled for 15th February. ‘When Is Enough’ is a Brexit and Trump inspired pop polemic, a scream in to the political and cultural void in the hope that some decency and sanity will echo back. Yet S3ASON is more pop album than agitprop, a collection of radio friendly songs exploring

themes of mental health awareness, the fragility of human relationships and the importance of love and hope in an increasingly fragmented world. The inspiration for the album, and the idea to release it as twelve singles, was Mailman’s desire to work quicker and have more immediacy as an artist than he’s had in the past. “‘Yang Yin’ took roughly three years to complete,” he says “It was a huge project, a deliberate indulgence that covered a lot of ground. With S3ASON, I wanted each song to stand up on its own and for it to be full of relevant short, sharp bursts that will hopefully also work as a long play album.” The first four tracks can be found in this private playlist. https://soundcloud.com/zeit-

geistproduction/sets/s3asonthe-story-so-far/s-8CZ5z Having recently been taken on by leading label service provider AWAL (Artists Without a Label), he is cautiously optimistic about the new singles and album’s prospects in what he considers to be an oversaturated data driven industry landscape. “As an independent artist with no backing or funding, it’s very hard to stand out from the crowd, especially now that streaming and social media stats are often deemed more important than talent or quality of output. But it’s not impossible.” Despite its financial limitations, ‘Yang Yin’ was well received in music industry circles and was briefly in the running to be shortlisted in three 2019 MPG Awards up against the likes

of Arctic Monkeys, Florence & The Machine and Tori Amos. It wasn’t shortlisted – not surprisingly, given the major label competition - but mastering engineer Mandy Parnell was shortlisted for her work throughout the year, including on ‘Yang Yin’. She is now on board to master S3ASON. “This album is definitely the most challenging and exciting thing I’ve done to date. It’s only half finished currently and I’ve deliberately left gaps so I can incorporate topical responses as and when the muse takes me.”

Owning your own home could be more affordable than you think

Do you often dream about owning your own home? If so, shared ownership could be the answer. Winterton Square is a brand-new development by Weald Living located at the heart of Horsham. Just moments away from Horsham train station, this stylish oasis is in close proximity to the wide range of shops, restaurants and amenities the town centre has to offer. Purchasing a home at Winterton Square could be more affordable than you think through the option of shared ownership, which enables you to buy a share of the value of the property and pay affordable rent on the remaining share. Whether you’re looking for a stepping stone onto the property ladder or an affordable way of owning your own home should your family circumstances have changed, shares at Winterton Square start from just 25%.

If your financial circumstance improves over time, you have the option of increasing your share to up to 100% of the property value. Buying a home through shared ownership offers many benefits, including saving money. Your monthly mortgage and rent payments can often work out cheaper than buying outright, and usually less than private renting. You will also part own your home rather than paying rent with no return. Household income requirements to buy a shared ownership property will vary from development to development. However, the general guidelines state that you must have a combined household income of less than £80,000 per year outside of London to meet the eligibility criteria. Thoughtful design combines with modern styling at Winterton Square. Offering a range of twobedroom apartments and two-

bedroom chalet bungalows, this stunning collection of new build homes are available to purchase on a shared ownership basis. Spacious light-filled living areas are complimented by stylish fully fitted kitchen and bathrooms, while practical storage and gas central heating creates a home that is energy efficient and easy to live in. The Mews, our range of twobedroom chalet bungalows, benefit from private gardens, while apartments feature generous balconies or patios, with views over the landscaped central grounds. Each property is provided with an allocated parking space, some of which also include electric car charging facilities. When it comes to convenience, Winterton Square is hard to beat. Leave your car behind and enjoy the range of pubs, bars, restau-

rants and cafes that Horsham has to offer at your leisure. Close to local bus routes and just 20 minutes away from Gatwick airport, this contemporary new development is ideal for both commuters and culture lovers alike. Craving some green space? Horsham park is right on your doorstep, while Sussex’s beautiful countryside is within easy reach. If you are interested in purchasing a home at Winterton Square, you’ll need to register with Help-to-Buy first. You can do so by visiting www.helptobuyese.org.uk. Strong win re-ignites Horsham’s promotion hopes

Photo by Clive Turner Saturday January 5 – London 2 South East Horsham 33 13 Gravesend Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter After defeats in their previous two matches, last Saturday Horsham bounced back with a confident win against Gravesend, their nearest competitor in the table pre match, avenging their narrow loss to the Kent side in September’s reverse fixture. Horsham began purposefully, with Declan Nwachukwu testing

the opposition with probing runs, culminating with Alfie Burchfield supplying Mathieu Pecharman to cross the line, ony four minutes into the game, the Frenchman going on to have a most impressive debut. Although Tom Johnson was unable to convert, Horsham did not have long to wait for additional points – Jordan Bell scything through to pass to Jamie Redmayne for the Green & Whites’ second try, kicked over by Johnson, giving Horsham a 12 nil advantage before Gravesend had got into their stride. The visitors did, though, respond

very positively, putting Horsham under sustained pressure, firmly withstood until a penalty in front of the posts enabled them to claw back three points. Another successful penalty kick followed, but Horsham led 12-6 at the break. On the resumption the Tredgett brothers – Michael and Richard – made inroads into the Gravesend defence, enabling Pecharman to score his second try, and when Johnson converted, Horsham were 19-6 to the good. And, the scoreline soon got even better, when, following the disappointment of a disallowed Horsham

try for Jordan Smith, the referee ruling a knock on, Bell’s kick was gathered by Nwachukwu, who powered through, Johnson’s accuracy expanding Horsham’s lead to 26-6. Nwachukwu then burst through again, this time from the half way line, leaving bemused defenders stranded in his wake, increasing Horsham’s advantage by another seven points after Johnson’s maximisation. To their credit, Gravesend kept pushing, adding a converted try, but, Horsham finished very worthy winners – 33-13, Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “First game back after the festive break is always a challenge, but we settled in very quickly, scoring two very good early tries. We then conceded penalties, but in the second half we scored three further, well- constructed tries,

giving us a well deserved bonus point. The forwards were excellent today and our backs looked very sharp in attack, but the most pleasing aspect, given the break, was our well organised, aggressive defence, which stymied Gravesnd all afternoon.” There were several contenders for Man of the Match, notably debutant Pecharman, but Nick Stocker awarded Nick Bell, citing: “His work rate, an example to us all, and his interventions across the park – in attack and defence – were huge.” Horsham, now third behind runaway leaders Beckenham – and Charlton Park – are at home again on Saturday, against 9thplaced Thanet Wanderers, while Aylesford Bulls and Heathfield & Waldron are at the foot of the table.

Battling Pulborough scare the runaway leaders Saturday January 5 – London 3 South East Crowborough 13 5 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Although Pulborough came away on the wrong end of the encounter at Steel Cross, they were certainly not disgraced - Crowborough are looking more and more like runaway champions, having scored 95 more points and conceded far fewer than their nearest contender - and this was the tightest of their 10 wins (from 12 starts) this season. Deprived of rugby over the Christmas and New Year break, a substantial, ebullient crowd saw determined Pulborough keep in close touch with the Crows throughout the game. While the Crows began busily, Boro had much of the early possession and the hosts defence had to be at their very best to prevent the concession of an early deficit. Boro, too defended doggedly, keeping the Crows at bay until the mid point of the first half, when a telling passing movement culminated in an unconverted try, the ball being touched down following concerted pressure from

the Crows. Borough, though, promptly responded, equalising with a try of their own, Sam Beasley getting over the line, Crowborough finding themselves wanting at the end of a wellfashioned three on one attack. But, another try by the Crows, after a Boro kick had been gathered and re-worked up the field, left Boro trailing 10-5 at the break, the conversion attempt again sliding wide just ahead of referee Edwards signalling the break. The second half was equally tight, with Boro enjoying much territorial advantage, fully testing the Crows’ back line. And, Boro might have taken the lead, but their normally accurate kicking deserted them, two penalties coming and going without changing the score. A forward pass halted a Crowboro incursion and, with Boro striving to make amends for September’s defeat by the Crows, they caused frustration by holding up the ball to prevent another home try. Crowborough then instigated a failed tap and run set piece before putting the result beyond doubt with another, more conventionally taken penalty. After just three points had separated the combatants in the second half, Crowborough praised Boro’s

resolve, saying: “Pulborough are a quality outfit with forwards and backs linking seamlessly, contesting for every loose ball, slowing down our possession. The outcome of the match was always uncertain even into the

last five minutes, and for impartial spectators it was a thoroughly entertaining encounter.” Crowborough are now 11 points clear of current runner up Old Williamsonians, who shade third-placed Beccehamian –

whom Boro entertain on Saturday. Boro, on level points with Old Dunstonians, who have an inferior points difference, are now sixth, narrowly shaded by Vigo and Folkestone.

Frustrated Hornets obliged to settle for a draw

Photos by John Lines

Monday January 1st – The Bostik League – South East Division Horsham 1 1 Guernsey Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Following their two recent reverses, Horsham were hoping for maximum points against modestly performing Guernsey and looked well set to achieve that until the visitors snatched a goal with barely a minute of normal time remaining. Early on, Charlie Harris, returning after a throat infection, supplied Chris Smith, but the Channel Islanders negated the probe before launching an unrewarded attack of their own.

Rob O’Toole and Tyrell Richardson-Brown’s opportunities then came to nothing before further Horsham pressure culminated in both Smith and George Hayward coming close to giving the Hornets the lead. With Guernsey defending well, Steve Metcalf and O’Toole were both deprived, visiting keeper Callum Stanton and his Horsham counterpart Josh Pelling, both catching safely to keep the slate clean. Horsham, though, passed up seemingly golden opportunities when Smith was unable to get past Stanton. Yet, Horsham were reprieved when Pelling managed to deflect a strike by Canha, who subsequently saw his header kept out by Metcalf. Earlier, Harris had

Horsham Men ease through to another Cup Final Hockey - Sussex Cup Semi Final Saturday January 5 - Worthing Men 2 4 Horsham Martin Read - Sports Reporter Cup holders, Horsham, booked their place in the end of season Cup Final by overcoming Worthing at Angmering School last Saturday. Towards the end, Horsham led by three clear goals, but although Worthing did manage to reduce the arrears, the result was never seriously in doubt. First half goals by Jean Marshall - and, Sam MacDonald, resulting from a brilliant passing build up down the entire length of the field before the goal keeper was side-stepped for a tap in - gave Horsham a comfortable cushion at the break. Resuming, Worthing found the net but Tim Upchurch restored Horsham’s advantage with a drag flick before Chas Richardson also converted a short corner to double Horsham’s tally. The substantial lead was preserved until Worthing scored again, but that mattered not, Horsham successfully closing down the game to run out comfortable winners, new Coach Brian Humphreys telling the District Post:

“This was a potential banana skin for us – they are higher in the league below than we are in our league, but our young side put in a good performance and, while we’ve been converting short corners this season, it was good to see us adding two field goals.” Hoping for an injection of points to move them up the table, Horsham Men resume league action on Saturday with a trip to London SE24 to take on 7th-placed Tulse Hill & Dulwich. Horsham are 10th, six points above Woking, while Slough, still awaiting their first point, are bottom. Last Sunday Horsham Ladies – also current Sussex Cup holders (and serial past winners) were scheduled to host a cup game against East Grinstead 2s, but their opponents from the power house of Sussex hockey were unable to field a team, giving Horsham a walk over. Having finished their indoor programme, the ladies – currently sixth in the table - will have to be content with friendlies until their 18 match Women’s Conference East league programme restarts on February 2, when fourth-placed Cambridge City are due to visit.

blazed over and, towards the end of the first half, Dean Lovegrove, playing instead of the suspended Joe Shelley, headed wide, emulated by Jack Brivio. O’Toole and Smith both got through, but, as before, the chances came and went, Guernsey, too, having unfulfilled possibilities, Charlton Gauvain looking threatening but missed out, the break arriving with neither side being able to break the deadlock. Play resumed with a deflection robbing Harris before action switched to the other end for Pelling to avert danger. A further distinct chance then went begging, a defensive lapse putting Smith in pole position, only for the ball to sail harm-

lessly over the bar, the same fate subsequently befalling O’Toole. A Horsham penalty failed to materialise when Brivio was bundled off the ball , then RichardsonBrown, Hayward – twice – and Smith were all off target, Horsham’s finishing problems continuing to prevent them from scoring. With Guernsey also creating chances, Pelling pulled off two impressive saves, before Horsham eventually managed to take the lead when a Harris volley induced a collision between Stanton and Jacob Fallaise, enabling O’Toole to score from close quarters. Horsham could have put the result beyond doubt but radar problems persisted and the Hornets were devastated when

Guernsey equalised through a Canha header with only added time remaining. Horsham threw everything into attack, but had to settle for an unaccustomed draw against their distant opponents. Team news – after hearing of an exciting vacancy via a Crystal Palace contact, Will Hoare is leaving Horsham to join Sweden’s Skelleftea, of their Division One North League, saying: “It would have been great to have stayed and hopefully got promotion with the lads, but if I didn’t take this opportunity it would always have been in the back of my mind. I’ve enjoyed being at Horsham so much.”

Nyetimber Lane Pagham has not been a happy hunting ground for Heath in recent years and with both sides fighting to stay in touch with the leaders a tough contest ensued. Muchchanged Heath were fast out of the traps, pushing their hosts back with last week’s match winner George Cousins constantly getting behind the Pagham backline. A series of corners resulted, but despite the pressure Heath could not get the final touch. With the ever dangerous Howard Neighbour and Danny Simmonds up front, Pagham posed a threat, and Heath keeper Connor Evento did well to push away a dipping shot from Jamie Horncastle and then negate a close range header

tinued with Heath having much play around the home penalty area but unable convert that into goals with shots from Howard Bold, Cousins and Devon Fender narrowly off target, neither side finding the net up to the break. The second half followed a similar pattern, but this time with Pagham having the lion’s share of

possession and Heath threatening on the break. Andy Waddingham, Ryan Brackpool and Evento had to be at their best to repell Pagham attacks - and Evento also made a wonder save from point blank. With the tension mounting amid some baffling decisions the game became rather scrappy, Heath midfielder Lee Carney having to leave the field temporarily after being felled without sanction. Restored to eleven men, Heath pushed forward with Ollie Moore narrowly failing to get on the end of a Richard Wetton cross and Dean Wright seeing his volley blocked. The game ended with Pagham again on the attack having had three corners and a free kick, but, neither side could find the target. Before the match Heath would probably have been happy with a point. At half time they would have definitely had their eyes on three, but by the end of the match were satisfied with a share of the spoils against a very strong team on their home patch. On Saturday Broadbridge Heath – now 5th - travel to Eastbourne for the rearranged game against a United team who, although bottom, are showing signs of rejuvenation under a new regime and will present a challenge to the high flying Bears.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

First game back after the festive break is always a challenge Nick Stocker

Horsham’s play off hopes back on track with Kent win Saturday January 5 – The Bostik League – South East Division Faversham Town 0 2 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham bounced back from a disappointing run of matches with a much needed win at Salters Lane, Faversham last Saturday to keep their play off aspirations alive. Rob O’Toole set Horsham off in the best possible way, a second half goal from Jack Brivio compounding the struggling relegation threatened hosts’ misery, who made life difficult for themselves when a brutal foul reduced them to ten men for the whole of the second half. Faversham, though, caused an early scare when Horsham keeper Josh Pelling shelled a high ball, convincing home fans that their side had taken an early lead, but, fortunately the referee thought otherwise. There was, however, no ambiguity when Horsham took the lead, O’Toole stroking in Chris Smith’s pin point supply in the third minute. Despite their lowly status in the league, Faversham reacted strongly, but Chapman’s free kick evaded the goal be-

fore chances at either end went begging. Smith was then unable to optimise a Charlie Harris free kick, as was O’Toole shortly afterwards. Will Godomon in the Faversham goal kept out another Harris probe ahead of safely gathering Smith‘s attempt, the half ending with near misses for both sides after Faversham skipper Harry Goodger was sent off for flooring Harvey Sparks. Resuming with the advantage of the slope, O’Toole and Smith had opportunities, but the woodwork intervened. Faversham gained increasing territory but failed to create real danger, while their defence succeeded in keeping Horsham at bay – until, in the dying moments, substitute Joey Taylor ran through to instigate a telling build up by Shelley, and Harris, whose accurate pass enabled Brivio to slot the ball home, cementing Horsham’s workmanlike, but most welcome, victory. Now fourth, Horsham entertain the team above them in the table – Whyteleafe – on Saturday. Meanwhile, Cray Wanderers remain top with 45 points, five more than Hastings United, Kentish near neighbours, Faversham and Herne Bay occupying the bottom two berths.

YMCA haunted by return of their seasonal blues Saturday January 5 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 1 Shoreham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Although Horsham YMCA remain second, their home form continues to mystify supporters – defeat against 15th placed Shoreham underlining their third consecutive one-nil loss at Gorings Mead, where they have taken just one point from a possible 12 in their last four matches, not having scored a home goal since November 24th. In contrast YM have scored 13 goals while winning their last four away games, last losing as visitors on October 27th. In the first half against Shoreham YM created plenty of opportunities and although a corner just evaded finalisation, only Dean Bown’s shot to James Broadbent in the Shoreham goal and a Tony Nwachukwu header

caused slight concern before Luke Gedling shaved the crossbar with a 30 yard blast. Shoreham also looked impotent, their only really dangerous move culminating in the ball landing on the top of the net after their number 8, Jay Carse had been carried off injured and YM skipper Dean Carden had to leave the field following a clash of heads. The second half resumed goal-less, but with YM continuing with more of the possession, Dean Bown displaying plenty of energy despite his early season goal scoring prowess lying fallow. Shoreham blazed over, but looked generally unthreatening, until a long range attempt – their first goal scoring probability – was tipped round the post by YM keeper Aaron Jeal at full stretch, who, onrushing, then caught Alfie Proto-Gates’ close range shot. Both sides then showed greater intent, Bown

unfurling a decent strike, but straight to

Broadbent. Jeal then averted another attempt, conceding a corner in the

process, ahead of Nwachukwu finding the keeper from the right, after which Shoreham broke down the left and, with the YM defence hesitating, Thomas Johnston made no mistake. YM players urged each other on with: “We’ve got 20 minutes left – come on!”, and Callum Donaghey crashed a long range strike only to see it saved. Substitutions failed to change the course of the game, with Jack Hartley spearheading YM pressure, the resultant corner going unfulfilled. The game terminated with all 11 YM players in the Shoreham area, but, despite earning another corner, a share of the points proved elusive amid desperate Shoreham defence, the final whistle coming with YM looking more likely to score than at any other time in the game.

Post match YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “Shoreham are under new management and, with recent signings, are a different team. They came determined not to lose and put men back, but we need to learn how to get through.” Last season YM were well-placed at Christmas, but faded badly in the second half of the season, Peter Buckland continuing: “Yes, we’re going through the same post Christmas collapse as last year – we’ll be having two training sessions this week, aiming to arrest our seeming lack of confidence.” Chichester won again and head the table with 50 points, four clear of YM, with Newhaven third, just one point shy of YM, but with two games in hand. In urgent need of a win to bump start their promotion/play off aspirations, YM now have two away games – against 14th in the table Hassocks on Saturday, followed by a visit to Peacehaven (10th) on the 19th
