Horsham mourns loss of much loved restaurateur russ bedford Lerdboon (Tony) Utthayain of Horsham’s first Thai restaurant, The River Kwai, has sadly passed away. After over 6 years battling with cancer, he passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday 8th January with his family by his side. From opening its doors in 1985 until they moment they were shut permanently in 2016 the River Kwai was a hugely popular restaurant in Horsham and drew visitors in from all around the UK. Regularly featuring on trip advisor as one of the best places to eat in the area and receiving consistently high scoring reviews on many websites it was a shame to see its time in the town come to an end. The dream of Sue and Tony Utthayanin continually gave customers the wow factor and a quick glance at their facebook page shows just how much the family run res-

taurant was loved by residents and when you track down a copy of an old menu it shows why it was held in such high regard. With dishes that are quite commonly known, like the ever popular red or green thai curry it was also the aim of the owners to give us an experience of their homeland without either confusing customers with too many options or pricing them out of a good meal. I, for one, remember that on my first visit I tried sai krog pu (crabmeat and minced pork sausages with plum sauce) and found it to be amazing. To many, this might not be the most Thai of dishes but at that particular moment, for me, a new food adventure began and from then on I have always found myself looking to try more Thai food when I get the chance. So from a personal perspective, I’d like to say thank you to Sue and Tony for introducing me to your world of wonder. At the time of their opening you could say that the team at River Kwai were pioneers. Continued on page 3

Teaching pupils from the entry age of four up to 11, the staff at St. Peter’s aim to provide an exciting, challenging, yet bespoke curriculum to suit all children’s needs with the vision to ‘unlock

Louis Theroux spotted filming in Broadbridge Heath Popular documentary maker Louis Theroux was spotted in Horsham village Broadbridge Heath on Monday 14th January filming for a new series. A spokeswoman informed us that it is due to air towards the end of 2019. Whilst news on what the programme subject matter may be remains unknown, our recent facebook post certainly had a lot of people talking and sharing a wide range of opinions on what it might have

the potential in everyone’. Sally was welcomed to the school to discuss her incredible career with the staff and pupils and cut the ribbon to open the track. In order to build the track, the school was fortunate to be awarded funding by the Diocese of Chichester, from The Healthy Pupils Capital Fund, which is intended to improve children’s and young people’s mental and physical health by increasing the availability and improvement of facilities. Sally said: “It was a pleasure to open the track and meet the staff and pupils at the school. I hope the track inspires them to achieve their goals and go for gold. Exercise is a vital part of health and wellbeing and it’s great to see the school incorporating physical activity across other school lessons, and encouraging children to take part in sport.” Sally has enjoyed a phenomenal career in international athletics and remains the only woman ever to hold four major track titles concurrently – Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth. The former track and field athlete won the 1992 Olympic gold medal in the 400m

hurdles in the Summer Games in Barcelona for Team GB. Since retiring from athletics, Sally, one of the most wellknown British sportswomen, became a regular TV personality and now uses her experience and knowledge in health and fitness to deliver corporate wellbeing programmes. She is also a motivational speaker, and supports healthy and active family initiatives in the UK. Every day, each of the school’s 14 classes will use the track, which has been laid into the school field in an effort to develop the health and well-being of pupils and staff alike. The track, which has been named by the children as ‘St Peter’s Metres’, will assist cross curricular activities - Science (healthy living), Maths (data handling), and PE (to build confidence and strength and learn more about the way their bodies work). Headteacher Denise Maurice said: “On behalf of all who attend St. Peter’s, we thank Sally for visiting us; Mr Nick Matthews, our previous Head of School for placing the bid and the Diocese of Chichester in supporting our efforts to maintaining a healthy lifestyle at St. Peter’s.”

You may remember the story we ran a little while ago about Horshams very own Rhino man, Chris Green. He set himself the incredible challenge of completing 20 marathons in 18 months to raise funds for ‘Save the rhino’. With 9 already chalked off, the journey into double figures begins with a gruelling event in Marrakesh taking place on January 27th. Starting in July he has so far raised over £1000 and aims to increase that figure significantly during the rest of his challenge and to help promote the cause and involve the local community he will be running into Horsham this Saturday in full Rhino costume posing for photos at various Horsham landmarks. In Spring the hard work continues as alongside his regular

job Chris will take part in other events, namely the Rhinothons in London and Manchester as well as the big London to Oxford 100 in May. Clocking up well over 200 miles it is a lot of hard work but Chris is determined to complete this challenge for an animal he cares a great deal about, “I’ve loved them for as long as I can remember, so I struggle to get my head around how anyone could mean them any harm. Global Gruffalo goes live for Horsham District Year of Culture 2019!

Twenty Gruffalo toys, sponsored by a range of local businesses have began their journey across the world celebrating the 20th anniversary of the hugely popular Gruffalo story written by Horsham District resident Julia Donaldson CBE. The toys are part of a project called Global Gruffalo, and were handed to their sponsors at a launch on Thursday January 10th at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens in Lower Beeding. Pupils from Holy Trinity CEP school were also there, treated to a performance of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson CBE herself and some special guests. The concept behind Global Gruffalo is very simple and the hope is that many, if not all, of these little characters collect some serious air miles and make lots of new friends on their trips. Each sponsor is now busy packing his little bag and just has 2 easy steps to follow: 1-Take a picture of your Gruffalo wherever you are in the World and upload it to the website www. globalgruffalo.co.uk or add it to social media via @GlobalGruffalo #GlobalGruffalo 2-Give him to someone else to do the same! At one stage it was known as The Pump Room nightclub, it also had some time as Daphne’s place, apparently her scones were pretty popular! It also branched out and became an Italian

It is a shame The River Kwai is no longer with us and I am sure there are many Horsham residents that still miss it and are glad they got to try it out. A service is being held for him at Surrey & Sussex Crematorium, St Richard’s Chapel at 12:00 on Monday 21st Jan. Those who wish to pay their respects are welcome. The Beautiful Game: A History of Football in Horsham District

Football is the most popular sport in the world in terms of both the number of players and spectators. A total of 44.5 million people tuned in to watch the BBC’s television coverage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Internationally, an average of 815 million watched the group stages of this year’s competition. The most widely-played version of the sport is Association football, which has evolved from earlier ball games. A form of football has been played in Great Britain since the Middle Ages, and games that involve kicking a ball have existed for millennia. The Greeks, Romans and Han dynasty Chinese all played ball games that involved kicking, passing between

players and scoring points. Horsham has had a football team since 1871, the year that the Football Association introduced its Challenge Cup. On 23 February 1871, the West Sussex Gazette reported that Horsham’s first football club had been founded and now played in Springfield Park. The Horsham and District Football Association was founded in 1895, “for the purpose of providing players for the Horsham FC” and the early minute books record the following clubs as members of the Horsham and District Football Association; Horsham FC, Y.M.C.A. FC, Shelley United FC, Carfax FC, Bishopric Wanderers FC, Roffey FC, Warnham FC, Working Mens FC, Billingshurst

FC, Handcross FC, and Southwater FC. Horsham District is now well served with football clubs who cater for all age groups, genders, backgrounds and abilities. They range from workplace teams, women’s teams, disability football teams, walking football teams, children’s teams and leagues, through to large clubs with a major following. Each group and club has its own history, complete with its own unique characters, successes and stories. It would be impossible to outline a complete and detailed history of every club to have operated in Horsham District, but Horsham Museum’s exhibition, The Beautiful Game: A History of Football in Horsham District, explores some of the stories that have contributed to Horsham District’s rich footballing tradition. The Museum has received a fantastic response from local clubs and individuals, and is lucky enough to be displaying a wide range of objects, including shirts, trophies, archival material, photos, clippings, artworks and footage that have kindly been lent out for the duration of the exhibition. The Beautiful Game: A History of Football in Horsham District runs until 30 March 2019. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am – 5pm. Admission Free. Children’s artwork celebrates Year of Culture in Horsham station A series of posters, designed by local primary school children in conjunction with Christ’s Hospital School, is being displayed in Horsham station to celebrate Horsham District Council’s 2019 Year of Culture. Each poster represents a month of the year 2019, and is themed according to the events happening in the Horsham area that month as part of the Year of Culture. Children from five local primary schools were invited to spend a day designing the posters in the Art Department of Christ’s Hospital School last June. The Primary students spent a day designing the posters based on significant landmarks in and around Horsham and also relevant imagery. They created a line drawing which they then added block colour to. Their

posters were then scanned in and digitalised to produce the final image. “The students were fantastic to work with, and seemed to enjoy spending the day in the Art Department and learning more about Christs Hospital” said Alex Naylor, Teacher of Art at Christ’s Hospital, “They had been selected by their primary schools, as they all had an interest in art, and this was evident in how they worked and the posters they designed. They seemed really excited by the prospect of having the chance to potentially have their work displayed around Horsham.” Each poster includes the name of the primary school involved in its design, including Holbrook, Kingslea, Warnham, Seymour and Wisborough Green Primary Schools.

Tackling Textiles - Repair, Reuse, Recycle Last year, it cost West Sussex tax payers £1.7 million to dispose of textiles binned by their owners. That’s a staggering 11,000 tonnes of unwanted clothes, towels, blankets or sheets thrown in with the general rubbish. Just over 7,000 tonnes of textiles were thrown into rubbish bins at home and nearly 4,000 tonnes into the general household waste containers at the Household Waste Recycling Sites, even though most of these textiles could have been repaired, reused or recycled. If you throw textiles away, you are actually paying for them twice: 1. When you buy them; 2. When you bin them: the West Sussex Waste Partnership has to pay to dispose of your textiles - and that money comes from your council tax.” It’s not just the cost of sending textiles to waste though, non-biodegradable textiles, such as polyester and nylon can take between 20 and 200 years to fully biodegrade which is not good for the environment. Textiles placed in home recycling bins can also get tangled in the machinery at the Materials Recycling Facility at Ford, causing the plant to shut down and adding delays to the recycling of plastics, paper and glass. So this year, the West Sussex Waste Partnership will be helping you to think before you throw and follow these simple steps to reduce your textiles going to waste. 1. Repair – You don’t have to be an expert with a needle and thread, but sewing on a button, sewing up a seam or hemming some trousers are useful skills, it could save a trusty wardrobe staple and give it a new lease of life. Or you could ask someone

you know to do this for you. 2. Reuse – If something you love can’t be repaired, why not turn it into something new? There are lots of handy tutorials online to inspire you and get you started

on a new project; from making aprons out of jeans that don’t fit anymore to making old t-shirts into reusable shopping bags. If crafting isn’t your bag, don’t forget that charities will also take clothes, shoes and sheets that are in good condition. 3. Recycle – If your textiles are beyond repair or reuse, or unsuitable for donation to charity, you can still take them to a textiles bank at either your local Household Waste Recycling Site or your nearest bring bank site. Clothes and shoes that still have some life left in them will be sorted and sent for reuse. Old, well-worn or torn textiles will be recycled by shredding and used in the ‘flocking’ industry for things such as car seat fillers. Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex

County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We always see an increase in the number of textiles thrown away in the general rubbish after Christmas. The New Year often motivates people to have a clear out and one of the first things they look at is clearing out the wardrobe. “From clothing that doesn’t fit to items beyond repair, there is something that can be done to give items in your wardrobe a new lease of life and keep them going for a little longer. “Whether you choose to repair, refresh or take textiles to your local Household Waste Recycling Site, bring bank site or charity shop you can easily do something to help save the environment and stop textiles going into your rubbish bin.” Remember it’s not just clothing that you can take down to a textiles bank, they also accept: Shoes (paired) Bags and belts Towels Bed linen Table linen Curtains Blankets The only items not accepted in textiles banks are pillows, duvets, carpets and rugs. You can dispose of these in the general household waste containers at your local Household Waste Recycling Site. A Life More Ordinary On Monday, Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, launched a week-long photographic exhibition at the Jubilee Library, Brighton, to celebrate locally funded victim support services. The exhibition will showcase six portraits of brave Sussex women who have regained their version of ‘A Life More Ordinary’, photographed in environments that they wouldn’t have been able to return to, without the help of our local victim service providers. An example is Norma, who suffered years of domestic abuse which left her completely lacking in self-confidence. She loved to sing and perform, but had not been on stage for a long time. She accessed Action on Elder Abuse and her caseworker, Gail, has been her ‘guardian angel’ through her journey of recovery. Norma’s story: “The last time he hit me was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Somebody told me about Action on Elder Abuse. Gail has been my rock, my guardian angel. “He was always jealous of me singing. I’ve not got dressed up like this for two years. I used to love singing here. Being back is like coming home.” Mrs Bourne explained: “Vic-

tims of crime often do not feel they have the freedom or selfconfidence to go back to their own normality after what has happened to them. They need help and support on that journey of recovery back to ‘A Life More Ordinary’ but often don’t know where to find it. “I commend these women who have come forward to share their stories, in the hopes that people will be encouraged to reach out for the help they need. They are a testament to the positive outcome of having specialist local support services in place and ensuring they are quality assured to give the best service possible. “Sussex led the way in 2015 with the set up of an online directory of local support services, Safe: Space Sussex. This website makes it easier for victims of crime to find the help and support they need, regardless of whether they report to the police or not. Millais PTA hoping to impress with preloved prom dress sale

Now in its fourth year, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of Millais School are once again offering the opportunity to buy and sell Prom dresses and accessories, on Saturday 9 February 2019, to meet a growing need for alternatives to full price items.

Ruth Dean of the PTA explained: “Our Preloved Prom Sale is a great opportunity to offer an affordable alternative to the dilemma of buying a prom dress and accessories. The quality of the dresses offered for sale has been of a very high standard and we are pleased to say that, this

year, we will also be selling sample dresses from the Southwater based ‘Prom Boutique’.” Millais PTA is encouraging previous students, and other Horsham residents, to bring their own Prom dress and accessories along for the day, and allow Millais PTA to try and sell it on their behalf. If a dress is sold the seller will receive the majority of the sale price, with a donation of 20% going to towards the fundraising for the school. The Preloved Prom Sale will enable potential buyers to view and try the dresses on offer, and purchase them that day. Ruth continued: “We hope that this will not only help some students purchase their prom essentials at a more affordable price, but also to give those interested in selling their dresses and accessories access to a captive audience.” The sale itself will be held at Millais School on Saturday 9 February 2018, 11.30am – 3pm. Careers boost for Collyer’s Students

Collyer’s recently welcomed Al Gunn (Sales Director, Boost Drinks) to the college for a session with students focussing on employability. Al took part in a lively Q&A with students, focussing on his meteoric career journey and gave candid advice about how students can be employable in the future. Lucy Hargreaves, Collyer’s Employability Programme Coordinator, said: “It was incredibly generous of Al to accept our invitation and give up so much of his valuable time to prepare for, and take part in today’s session;

our students really enjoyed the lively Q&A.” The second-year students who attended the session were those currently studying the innovative and highly rated Employability Programme at Collyer’s. Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, who teaches the course, said: “Al Gunn has enjoyed a hugely successful career in marketing and sales, and it is fantastic that he’s willing to inspire and actively help the next generation. Christ’s Hospital School, near Horsham, has been chosen as Sainsbury’s Local Charity of the Year at the Billingshurst branch. The Local Charity of the Year scheme is run every year by Sainsbury’s, and involves customers and colleagues working together to support a local cause at the heart of the local community. Each store draws up a shortlist of three local charities, which can be supported all year round, not just with fundraising, but also with awareness raising and volunteering. Customers then vote on which of the three charities to back – either in store or at the Local Charity of the Year site. Aladdin and his genie work their magic in Crawley

The Hawth’s pantomime ALADDIN, starring Dancing on Ice’s Jason Gardiner and Shaheen Jafargholi (EastEnders, Casualty), brought more than 33,000 people to the venue throughout December 2018 and January 2019, with audience members of all ages enjoying the festive

family treat. Many took to social media to give fantastic feedback, ‘We’ve been coming for 6 years but this is the best panto yet’, ‘Great show saw it yesterday. Full of fun and energy’, ‘The panto was absolutely amazing so want to see it again!’ and ‘wow amazing, as

always. Our Christmas has truly started now’ were just some of the amazing comments that appeared on The Hawth’s Facebook page during the run. Produced, once again, by Evolution Productions and telling the story poor Aladdin, whose dream of marrying the Princess

comes true with the help of a magic lamp, a genie and flying carpet, this beautifully crafted pantomime was a perfect mix of a highly talented cast, hilarious comedy routines, audience participation, amazing sets and, of course, a baby elephant and a giant mummy!

There was high praise from critics who called the show, ‘Spectacular’ (Crawley & Horley Observer) and ‘Truly Magical’ (Mid Sussex Times), while Theatre South East were impressed by the ‘Dazzling Costumes, lavish and colourful sets’ and whatsgoodtodo.com said Aladdin was ‘Everything you want from a pantomime.’ Drawing plaudits as always was The Hawth’s resident Dame, Michael J Batchelor, who donned his fabulous wigs and heels once again to take on the role of Dame Wishee Washee. Mark Dunford, reviewing for the Crawley and Horley Observer was not the only one to comment, ‘If there is a better Dame on the panto circuit than Batchelor I would be shocked. His comic-timing (Ginster’s Paradise anyone?) and audience interaction are perfect’. Simon Cowell called him: “unique… very quirky, very funny, very naughty” and viewers agreed in their millions. But Robert is no overnight sensation and has to be seen live for the full adrenaline-filled experience. With over a decade playing Britain’s tough comedy circuit as the only gay, dyslexic, quarter-Welsh, Aspergic, webbed-toed comic, Robert has a lot to tell. Is comedian and musician Robert White the new Susan Boyle? He had been performing comedy for 14 years, but then his mum and BGT changed his life. Robert explains: “I went on Britain’s Got Talent, because I was going to give up comedy and I wanted to show my mum I had done everything I could to try and make it work. I thought I would do Britain’s Got Talent and not get anywhere. It was more unexpected than waking up in the morning and having breakfast in bed brought to you by David Walliams. “I am selling out theatres and having lovely times with people up and down the country. I did a gig last night and a young guy came up to me wanting a selfie and said ‘My nan loves you!’ It’s all different sorts of people who like me. Edgy but friendly and fun. There are lots of women and kids. I love performing to audiences because comedy makes me feel I fit in.” Robert has a remarkable ability to make up song lyrics and very memorable original tunes on the spot. Without even taking a brief pause, he immediately sang: I cannot make up a song on the spot That’s a skill I haven’t got I will not do it even if you insist I would not do it to please a journalist Dyslexic Robert is known for writing songs with intricate lyrics: “Since I was a kid, it has been easier to make stuff up than to read it. Over the years, I developed the ability to improvise. It depends what is happening. There was a man in the audience last night called Ryan and I made up a song about him being Ryanair and taking me on a flight. There may or may not be audience participation. It depends on the specific audience, what makes them laugh, what makes them happy. I may or may not get someone up on stage. It depends on the night and on the audience. It’s all about them. On a tour, you have to gauge each audience for what it is. For me, a little bit before BGT I was trying to impress people who had never seen me before. Now I walk on stage and the audience has expectations and I have to play with that.” Robert has been described as having brilliant timing and an anarchic performance style. Can audiences expect the same level of anarchy in his first live tour? He shrugs: “Who knows if it will be

anarchic? The point about anarchy is you don’t know what’s coming. The unexpected. I haven’t done anything totally anarchic. But then my stuff is not really political. I’m writing a children’s musical. Maybe, after that, I might go back to teaching. My last day at the school was very sad. I loved it and the kids were amazing. But Britain’s Got Talent turned my life round and has given me opportunities which I never dreamed of. “I would like to do lots of comedy shows. I would like to write lots of musicals. I would like to write symphonies and songs. If I became a person writing musicals, that would properly please me. My idea about being a serious composer is that I don’t have to be successful during my lifetime. If I make sure I die in poverty, I can succeed 200 years after I’m dead when I am re-discovered. At the moment, I am just enjoying this tour which takes me to lots of interesting places around Britain.” Robert’s Britain’s Got Talent clips have had over 6 million views on YouTube: “Yes,” Robert deadpanned, “it has taken me a long time to watch that much. But, because of Britain’s Got Talent, I do now have fans from all over the world inviting me to all sorts of places, and I would like to go to as many places as possible. I want to go everywhere. “To be honest, I’ve only just really started to understand how massive Britain’s Got Talent is. If I had realised at the time how massive it could be, it might have messed my mind up… I was performing to eight million people on live TV; it has just been shown in New Zealand; it keeps being shown in different places all over the world.” The shows are called ‘The Tank Top Tour,’ Will he be wearing a different tank top every night? “Probably. I used to get them from vintage clothes shops, which used to have 60s and 70s clothes. But now ‘vintage’ apparently means 80s and 90s. So fewer tank tops.” Be wary of asking Robert White what appear to be straightforward questions, because he will turn everything into unexpected directions, as he does in his act. “What’s the best thing about touring?” “Alan Turing? His mathematical ability. He was also another gay, autistic person. The start date is 14.1.19 and representations must be made by 25.2.19. West Sussex County Council (WSCC) has two weeks to notify any statutory parties and any other interested persons, who made representations to them about the planning application. No Incinerator 4 Horsham (Ni4H) Community Group has been researching and seeking advice since we heard of the appeal just before Christmas. Whilst there is much that volunteers can do, we clearly need a stronger advocate than one of us. Funds permitting, we urgently require legal advice, consultancy reports by one or more recognised experts, and a barrister, who can explain and present the case for concerned residents, to the Planning Inspector at the Public Inquiry with authority. UK Without Incineration Network (UKWIN) has advise us that we need to raise £30,000 as soon as possible and may need as much as £50,000.

Renting still a safe bet in the South East UK inflation rates, last reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) at 2.3%. Horsham steam ahead with punishing win

And, it got even better when Declan Nwachukwu burst through straight from the restart, initiating a superb team build up, finalised by Aaron Linfield getting over the line. Playing with confidence and flare, Horsham were promptly awarded a penalty try

when Nwachukwu got to the line, but was subjected to a high tackle in the process, leaving Horsham 21 points to the good with less than a quarter of the game gone. After a period of more even play, with both defences negating forays, the ball was swung wide to Jordan Smith for another try, Johnson duly adding the extras, giving Horsham an unchallenged 28 point ascendancy at the break. Thanet had no option other than to attack if they were to have any chance of winning and this highlighted the soundness of Horsham’s defence, but relentless pressure from the visitors finally bore fruit in the form of a converted try, yet by that time the game was an hour old. Horsham responded with another Nwachukwu try, Johnson obliging to restore Horsham’s 28 point advantage. Joe Wilde then twisted the knife, intercepting to coast over and when Johnson kicked successfully again Horsham’s already unassailable position improved to 42-7, Thanet’s late consolation try being of no consequence. Post match Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker praised “Horsham’s fantastic first half, with four very good tries, the second of which being one of the best seen at Coolhurst for some time.” After congratulating the team for all round excellence in both attack and defence, Nick Stocker added: “With so many good performances, the standout today was Jamie Redmayne – his physicality combined with his organisation saw a huge contribution to the result” On Saturday third in the table Horsham switch to Sussex Cup action – at home with a 1.30 start, against Brighton - before, on the 26th they have another crucial game in the league – versus second-placed Charlton Park, who inflicted a rare defeat on high flying leaders Beckenham last Saturday.

Cottesmore Ladies thrilled with Ruth’s hole in one Golf Martin Read - Sports Reporter Outgoing Ladies’ Captain at Cottesmore Golf Club, Heather Skinner, tells the District Post: “The final weeks of my captaincy has been marked by a spectacular hole in one by the club’s Ruth Leatherbarrow, and it came at a good time - in our Ladies’ Winter Aggregate Competition. Ruth’s outstanding shot was at the eighth on the Phoenix Course. Although short, it is a tricky hole because there is a bunker strategically placed to guard the green, often snaring unwary victims. Ruth was absolutely delighted, of course – and so were we, because she generously set up a tab behind the bar, buying all the lady competitors a drink! Our competitions have been very well supported throughout the winter months – the course being in such very good condition. Ruth’s achievement

was very special because it was the first hole in one in my year of office and it was great to be able to present her with her trophy.” Heather Skinner’s reign has been marked by a series of events to raise funds for the mental health charity Heads On, Heather adding: “Quite rightly there is now a focus on mental health provision – one in four of us experience it at some point in our lives and most of us know a sufferer. So, I decided to see what we can do at the club to support Heads On. They’re local, with excellent facilities at Langley Green, which they’re keen to develop further. They work in partner-

ship with the NHS to make things better for those in need of help by introducing a range of projects, including provision of a gym to boost mental health, and other ways to assist patients and families – from across Sussex and beyond and I’m looking forward to presenting the cheque to Heads On next month.”

In September’s first game - at the Sparrow’s Den on West Wickham’s Corkscrew Hill - a last gasp try sealed Boro’s 29-24 win and the home reverse fixture score was almost identical, Boro skipper Frazer Oliphant-Hope telling the District Post: “This was a tough one! Beccehamian are a very solid outfit and it was close throughout the entire game, with both sides being in contention right up to the end, but, once we

stopped conceding silly off loads we won well, with their late try detracting slightly from our winning margin.” For Boro, tries by Sam Beezely, Ollie Coombe-Tenant and Brad Game, plus the trusty boot of Oliphant-Hope, who also got over the line, carried Boro home, Frazer adding: “It might have been even better, but I missed three kicks by an inch!” The win leaves Boro sixth on level pegging with Folkestone, but still in with a chance of reaching the play offs, being just four points behind Beccehamian, Vigo and Old Williamsonians, all on 40. Crowborough are 11 clear at the top of the table despite suffering a rare defeat – 13-12 against Vigo - whom Boro visit at Meopham, near Gravesend, on January 26th after having no fixture this weekend.

Horsham disappointed to lose after playing well Saturday January 12 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Tulse Hill & Dulwich 3 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Returning to league action after the Christmas and New Year break, and boosted by their customary qualification for the Sussex Cup Final, Horsham started well at Dulwich College, steadily taking control, but two goals against the run of play eventually deprived them of any points. Horsham opened the scoring, as they have done on previous occasions this season – Chas Richardson finding the net on the rebound from a short corner, but, Tulse Hill were fortunate to equalise when a long ball was deflected past Horsham’s new goalkeeper, former Canterbury man Joe Elgar. Horsham, though, responded positively, going into the break 2-1 up after Tim Upchurch’s short corner flick had sufficient legs to get past the hosts’ keeper. Resuming, Tulse Hill’s clinically executed short corner conversion drew them level again, and, although Horsham had the better of the possession, with everyone pushed forward in the attempt to secure a winning goal, Tulse Hill completed a turn over, racing away on the break to grab all three points. Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “When you’re going forward so well nobody likes to settle for one point – it

First half defensive lapses sink Horsham YMCA Saturday January 12 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Hassocks 5 3 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA were hoping to arrest their poor run of form against mid table Hassocks, but at the Beacon last Saturday defensive errors in YM’s disastrous first half led to their biggest defeat of the season – their fourth loss from their last five games, while Hassocks notched up their fourth consecutive win. The second half was a more even contest, two late YM goals adding some respectability, but the damage had long since put paid to any YM hopes of getting into closer contact with runaway leaders Chichester City and current runner up Newhaven. And, YM’s misery was compounded by former Gorings Mead favourite Phil Johnson scoring two goals before the break, taking his seasonal tally to 18. YM, though, began with attacking intent, but conceded a penalty in the tenth minute from a foul against Johnson, who then scored from the spot, overcoming Aaron Jeal’s outstretched hand. The Robins’ second goal resulted from an uncleared free kick, defender Will Broomfield’s shot going well beyond Jeal’s reach. Then, three minutes later, Johnson found the net again after Hassocks had burst

through the YM defence. After YM had donated a series of free kicks, Johnson was floored and James Littlejohn stepped up to curl the free kick into the distant corner of the goal, leaving YM four goals adrift at the whistle. Creditably, YM resumed in fighting mode, and, after they were twice denied by the woodwork, Guy Harding did manage to dent the deficit in the 64th minute. But, any sense of relief was short-lived, Liam Benson’s left-footed strike promptly restoring the Robins’ four goal cushion, courtesy of a missplaced clearance. With a mountain to climb and not much time to do it, YM scored twice through Harding and Jack Hartley just before the end of normal time, but it was too little and much too late, the game ending with the dismissal of YM Captain Callum Donaghey, his two yellow cards underlining YM’s frustration. YM remain third, but are now 10 points behind Chichester City and five away from second placed Newhaven, who have two games in hand. A floodlight problem at Gorings Mead is being addressed, meanwhile it remains to be seen whether the lights have gone out on YM’s promotion aspirations for another season – they will be hoping for better on Saturday when they visit tenth in the table Peacehaven & Telscombe.

Broadbridge Heath battle out hard fought draw at The Oval Tuesday January 8 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Eastbourne United 0 0 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath were hoping for three points on their visit to The Oval to take on bottom club Eastbourne United, but, the East Sussex side has shown some recent improvement by beating Lingfield 2-0 and YM had to be content with a share of the points, hopefully only temporarily halting their bid to reach the end of season play offs. On a bitterly cold coastal evening Heath started the game with ten men, Andy Waddingham’s arrival being delayed by a few minutes, but the Bears were pleased to welcome the return of Kieron Thorp in goal, although they were without influential midfielder Lee Carney, striker Dean Wright and central defender Marlon Maxwell, Dean Robinson having been brought in to partner Devon Fender and George Cousins in attack. Eastbourne started in lively fashion, with Heath taking a while to counter the hosts’ passing game. However, once Heath had found their feet, it was Fender who almost provided the lead, but, meeting a left wing cross with only the goalkeeper to beat, he somehow missed the target. Robinson, Fender and Cousins all then went close in quick succession before United had a shot that whistled past

The second half continued in similar vein until, midway through, Ollie Moore was shown a straight red card by referee Tom Price for what looked like a fair tackle, mystifying both sets of supporters. Then, on 75 minutes Dean Robinson was replaced by Alfie Jones, Richard Wetton pushing into a more forward position, but with skipper Tom Bold struggling with an injury Heath were now challenged and had to dig deep to combat Eastbourne’s mainly aerial threat, United gaining more control in the middle due to their extra man. However, Heath remained dangerous on the break, while the back four of Wetton, Martin Flack, Ryan Brackpool and Jamie Robinson dealt with everything coming their way. And, with Cousins giving the full back the runaround, it now looked as though Heath might snatch all three points. Again it was Fender, put through by Bold, who almost broke the deadlock – until his shot was well saved by Jordan Hawkins. Both teams strove for the elusive winning goal, however, despite their best efforts, the game ended in stalemate – Heath’s third clean sheet in a row and fourth game unbeaten. Heath are now sixth and, after having no fixture last weekend, this Saturday they welcome 17th-placed Little Common to the Leisure Centre.
