Regeneration of Piries Place fully underway

Developers, Reef Estates, have started construction work to regenerate and transform Piries Place in Horsham. Their plans, which were approved by the Council in February 2017, include a new three screen Everyman Cinema, 92 Bed Premier Inn Hotel and complementary restaurants

and retail. In addition, Reef will upgrade the public realm and square to create a relaxing environment for outside dining and entertainment. Gilbert Ash, an award winning UK Construction Company, was formally instructed to do the construction works last year. They have started,

and the demolition phase is expected to continue until the end of February 2018. The popular sculpture, Mr. Pirie and his donkey, has now been removed and will be placed in a similar position within the square on completion. Will Rohleder, Reef Estates Development Director,

explained: “It took a considerable amount of expertise to remove Mr. Pirie and his donkey and the artist’s representatives had to be contacted to ensure the structure was dealt with safely and securely. The sculpture is now in storage, and will remain there until close to project completion, when it

Huge thankyou to our contributors: Horsham Rocks, Keith Holmes, Tim Hewlett & John Lines

Once again St Catherine’s Hospice has been chosen as the official charity for the Barns Green Half Marathon & 10k taking place on Sunday 30 September 2018. The Barns Green Half Marathon Committee was unanimous in their decision to continue to support the outstanding local charity, which provides individualised, expert end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey. Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings, said: “Those of us who have visited St Catherine’s Hospice know what a wonderful place it is, with some very special people providing an essential service. “This year, our association with St Catherine’s is particularly poignant as we recently lost two dear friends from the village, Brian Muncer and Mike Awcock, who were very prominent figures in village life and who, between them, clocked up 56 years as senior marshals for our race. Both passed away just before Christmas and both benefitted enormously from St Catherine’s support. We are, therefore, delighted to be extending our association with this great charity for another year.” The enormous success of last year’s Barns Green and 10k races, combined with the great generosity of the runners, resulted in a staggering £18,000 being raised for St Catherine’s. Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “We’re so grateful to the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k committee for choosing us as their charity partner again. We rely very heavily on support and donations

from our local community and each year need to raise more than £6.5 million in voluntary income, so support like this is vital. Without it, we couldn’t deliver our expert care to local people when it’s needed

This year, our association with St Catherine’s is particularly poignant as we recently lost two dear friends from the village most. We’re looking forward to another year of great races!” Last year, over 2,200 runners registered for the Half Marathon, which is in its 36th year, and almost 600 runners completed the 10k event, which was only being staged for the second time. This year’s two race courses follow routes on closed roads, through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, and Christ’s Hospital, where (for the first time in 4 years) the magnificent Christ’s Hospital School marching band will be playing while the runners go through the grounds of the school. What could be more uplifting for runners? Entries are already open for the September races, and hopefully the event will, once again, raise a lot of money for its chosen charity. New Year heralds new home for Thakeham Pre-School The ribbons were cut on Friday 5 January to mark the opening of the brand new premises of Thakeham Pre-School at Abingworth Meadows, Thakeham. Sharon Rance, who heads the growing pre-school, gave an emotional speech thanking all her staff and the children who have attended, past and present. She also paid tribute to those who had helped over the years in enabling the move to the new ‘home’ particularly Neil St Clair, an ex-parent. Also joining the celebrations were members of the Parish Council including Alan Hunt (Chair), who said “We are delighted to see the staff and children enjoying their wonderful new facilities and are looking forward to this exciting new phase of partnership”. Representing the first of hopefully many generations attending pre-school at the new premises, one of the youngest members, George, was then invited to step forward to cut the ribbon, watched by a crowd of around 80 local friends and families. “We are all delighted with our new ‘home’ and the wonderful difference it will make to the children and to us,” said Sharon. “We just know everyone will love it as much as we do - there’s so much space for the children to enjoy, and it’s light and

bright. We’re so passionate about creating a ‘home from home’ environment so that the children are relaxed and comfortable and with all this space here, both inside and out, they can really explore to their hearts’ content.” Design of the premises has taken into consideration acoustics, a pleasant working environment, solar PV for generating electricity and underfloor heating. Child sized toilets and low level basins are in the cloakroom while a kitchen is complete with dishwasher and washing machine. Outside there is a selection of climbing and play equipment, raised garden beds and a garden shed for storage. “We were genuinely delighted to welcome so many people to our Open Day,” added Sharon. “And we have already had three new children joining us and more enquiries on the day. All together we’re all looking forward to a very happy new year ahead.” The new setting for Thakeham Pre-School is one of several new community buildings which form part of the landmark Abingworth Meadows development which will also include a village hall, sports facilities and a village shop. Thakeham Preschool welcomes enquiries via thakeham@hotmail.co.uk or visit thakehampreschool.uk.com.

‘Works are currently targeted for completion in early 2019’ Continued from front page Reef are in discussion with a number of new restaurateurs and retailers who have expressed interest in the scheme. Brasserie White Company have committed to occupying the largest restaurant unit, unit 1 which fronts Carfax, for their gastro pub offer. In addition a number of existing tenants, who are continuing to trade in Pirie’s Place, have signed new leases. These include Louise Sloan Opticians, Ceramic Shack, Broadbridges (who are tak-

ing the former Sugar and Snow Unit), Timpson and Lower Lodge Candles. Jason Russell, Reef Estates Construction Director, said: “We are working hard with our main contractor, Gilbert Ash, to try and ensure existing tenants continue trading as the construction progresses and to minimise disruption and inconvenience over this period. Works are currently targeted for completion in early 2019”.

Calling all racing pancake flippers!

Register your teams now for the tenth annual Horsham Charity Pancake Races, for your chance to have fun, support charities and promote your organisation’s role in the local community. All local Horsham businesses, charities and other organisations are invited to enter teams of four people (preferably in fancy dress) to compete in the tenth annual Horsham Rotary Charity Pancake Races. The event is to be held in the Carfax at lunchtime on Tuesday, February 13 (Shrove Tuesday), which falls during the half term school holiday. The Horsham Pancake Races are run during half term, so that families can come and enjoy the entertainment, creating larger crowds and a brilliant atmosphere. The event is once again organised by The Rotary Club of Horsham, in partnership with Horsham District Council, and is aimed at raising money for local Charities that are nominated by the competitors. The Main Sponsor for this year’s event is locally based highway maintenance Company, Ringway, who will organise the race course and signage, as well as sponsoring the Mascot Race Prizes. Sainsbury’s will be supplying the pancakes and sponsoring the main Trophy, with other trophies being sponsored by Waitrose, the Non-Stop Party Shop, Rawlison Butler, South East Hearing Centres and Horsham Rotary Club . A special 10th Anniversary award, sponsored by Spirit FM Radio, will be made to a local business in recognition of their long term support for the Rotary Horsham Charity Pancake Races. The call is going out for Businesses and Organisations to gather a team of four to enter the 80 metre relay race, using their own frying pan and non- slip shoes. The course is designed to encourage a sensible mix of skill and speed. Cups and prizes will be awarded to the winners on the day, including prizes for the Best Team Fancy

Dress, Best Over 40’s Team, Winning Charity Team, Best Individual Fancy Dress, Best Flipper and overall Winning Team. Last year’s Winning Team, Harris Lord Recruitment, beat Sainsbury’s in the final to win the prestigious Sainsbury’s Cup for the second time. The St Catherine’s Hospice Team won the Rotary Shield for the winning Char-

ity and the Best Fancy Dress Prize, presented by the Non Stop Party Shop, was won by the Team from Action Medical Research who were dressed as tinselly haired doctors. The Samaritans won the Waitrose Trophy for the Best Over-40’s Team and Leo Joseph of Harris Lord was crowned Best Flipper and took home the Rawlison Butler Trophy. St. Catherine’s Hospice, Chestnut Tree House and Action Medical Research all received monies from the event as a result of being nominated by the competing teams and/or the winning teams or winning the Charity Race. In addition to the Pancake Races, a splendid medley of colourful mascots from far and wide will compete in Egg & Spoon Races for the Ringway Cup. Last year’s race was won by Buster the Search Dog who just beat Horsham’s very own ‘Howie the Hornet’ in a close run final. Further information and entry forms can be obtained by emailing: horshamrotary@btconnect. com. The final date for entries is Friday 2 February. PLEASE NOTE: All entries will be accepted on a strictly first come, first served basis.

Public Exhibition Britaniacrest Recycling Ltd will be submitting a planning application early this year to develop a Recycling Recovery and Renewable Energy Facility (The 3Rs) at the site of the former Wealden Brickworks, off Langhurstwood Road, RH12 4QD. Whilst there has been substantial investment in waste processing facilities across the country, there is a real shortage of facilities that can deal with the diverse mix of waste, ensure that appropriate waste is recycled and that the remainder is put to use to the benefit of the UK. This facility will safely process waste and materials, such as metals, particular plastics and rubble, which will be sorted and segregated to recover their value for onward recycling using the latest sorting technology. The residual material will be used to produce energy using well established and proven thermal treatment technology. Electricity will be exported to the grid, enough to power a small town. All these activities will provide a sustainable alternative to primary materials and fossil fuels.

Saxon Weald Chief Executive, David Standfast, announces retirement After more than 17 years setting up and leading Saxon Weald, David Standfast, Chief Executive, will be retiring at the end of June. A Cambridge graduate, David worked in various local government positions before becoming Chief Executive of Maidenhead and District Housing Association in 1994. He joined Saxon Weald in 2000 to establish the company and oversee the transfer of homes from Horsham District Council. David commented: “I will be going knowing that Saxon Weald is in good shape. We have high levels of both staff and resident satisfaction, sound governance and efficient services. We have also built over 1500 new homes, including 11 excellent extra care

schemes – something of which I am particularly proud. “While I have enjoyed my time at Saxon Weald immensely, it is now time for me to stand down and hand over future leadership, while I contemplate the beach in Brighton from my living room.” Simon Turpitt, Saxon Weald’s Chairman, added: “David has been a very committed Chief Executive, taking us from inception to the vibrant, well-respected housing association we have today. Under his leadership, we have built much-needed new homes for local people, more than doubled our workforce generating important employment opportunities, created strong governance structures and transformed services to ensure we are able to offer the best services for residents within our challenging budgets. “He can be extremely proud of what has been achieved and will be missed by all of us who have worked with him.” Saxon Weald’s Chairman and Board will shortly be making arrangements to recruit a successor.

Binoculars at the ready as Horsham care home prepares for Birdwatch

A care home in Horsham is preparing to take part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this January. The residents at Care UK’s Skylark House on St Marks Lane have got their binoculars at the ready and are gearing up to participate in the annual wildlife survey, which will be taking place from Saturday 27 until Monday 29 January. The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s biggest garden wildlife survey. Every year, over half a million people nationwide take part by counting the birds, as well as other garden species, such as badgers and hedgehogs, that they spot in their garden in one hour. This important survey allows the RSPB to monitor species population and trends year to year. Residents at Care UK homes across the country have been using the Birdwatch to take part in all

sorts of feathered friend-related activities, ranging from art projects to making bird food cakes. Home manager, Dev Lallchand, explained why taking part in the Birdwatch is important for residents at Skylark House: “Spending time outside and connecting with nature has great benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing, which is important for older people, and particularly for those living with dementia. “Birdwatching is a peaceful activity that has a calming effect on residents, with vibrant colours and distinctive bird songs also providing sensory stimulation. What’s lovely is that birdwatching can be enjoyed from the comfort of an armchair, no matter what the weather, thanks to our carefully positioned feeders. The residents enjoy getting together to count the

Large vehicle damages Horsham’s A future leader in engineering much admired North Street borders

North Street is without doubt the most well known and iconic access point into Horsham Town. On one side, there’s Horsham’s Grade II listed Station and on the other, the ancient park and a roadside framed with attractive planted borders, which stretch all the way to The historic Black Jug Pub. The planted beds, known as the Diamond Jubilee Floral Ribbon, were installed in 2012 with the aid of Lottery Funding, secured by HDC in co-operation with Horsham in Bloom. Even in the depths of winter, they are an eye-catching sight, maintained by a team of volunteers who turn out on the second Sunday of every month, come rain or shine, to clear away litter, remove

weeds and dead plants and who do everything they can to ensure the beds always look their best. Contractors are also employed by HDC to regularly cut the grass, further enhancing the area for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. The North Street Border Patrol, as the volunteers are known, were enormously saddened when, last Sunday, they discovered severe damage to one of the grass verges, which was undoubtedly the result of a large HGV mounting the kerb, tearing up the grass as it went and leaving huge, deep gouges in the ground. The damage has ruined the aesthetic of the borders and simultaneously made the ground potentially hazardous to any pedestrians. This section of North Street, adjacent to one of Horsham’s

current redevelopment initiatives, Holmes Park, is clearly wide enough for HGVs to turn around and, as this is a site of development, they come and go on a regular basis and have done so for a while with no damage being recorded until now. Quite why or how it became necessary to mount the kerb, causing such devastating and wilful damage is beyond imagination. Perhaps, if there were any passers by who witnessed a large vehicle mounting the grass verge on North Street in the last week, they would like to inform Horsham in Bloom at hibsecretary@gmail.com. Similarly, if the party responsible would like to come forward, maybe we could, confidentially of course, discuss a donation towards the repair of the damaged verge.

Arkwright Scholarship is the first step towards making this dream a possibility, and I am looking forward to using the Scholarship to further my studies and experiences in computer science for the next two years.” A growing number of girls and boys from Christ’s Hospital go on to study engineering. Last year’s leavers are now reading mechanical engineering; industrial design and applied software engineering. Many of these pupils studied design and technology whilst at school – both the A level and IB Diploma course are offered by the DT department. The department has facilities that would be the envy of a university and is not only geared to equip pupils with practical skills, turning out useful and imaginatively designed products and pieces of furniture, but also to help solve the manufacturing and engineering challenges of the future. A 16-year-old from Horsham has been named as St John Ambulance District Cadet of the Year for 2018. Daisy Beddall, who’s studying the international baccalaureate

at Varndean College, beat off stiff competition to take the district title at the competition held in Guildford. She will now represent fellow Cadets from across Surrey, North Hampshire and East Sussex throughout this year at public and St John Ambulance events. In an event designed to single out the district’s most outstanding St John Ambulance Cadet, Daisy had to complete a first aid challenge to demonstrate her life saving abilities, take part in a debate, as well as give a presentation and be interviewed by judges. Daisy, who joined St John Ambulance’s Horsham Cadets around two years ago, helps at the weekly meetings by welcoming new volunteers to the unit, giving support to the younger volunteers, and encouraging them to get the most out of their experience. She’s also had to use her first aid at home, when her Dad’s arm was cut deeply by a large spring on the garage door, exposing nerves. She told him to apply pressure to the wound, while she sterilised a cloth and then applied pressure herself, before he was taken to hospital. Daisy, who will now go on to compete for the title of overall London and South Regional Cadet of the Year and National Cadet of the Year in February, said: “It’s a real honour to represent other

On Englands pleasant pastures Care market on agenda at select committee seen! (W Blake – Jerusalem)

The English poet William Blake, whose celebrated poem Jerusalem gave inspiration for Horsham Museum’s new watercolour exhibition, sensed the public’s growing interest in England’s pastures green, born out of an awareness of nature, and of the picturesque. The poem was published over 200 years ago, yet during the intervening years, our interest in the pastoral hasn’t diminished, as the watercolours on show reveal. Taking inspiration from Blake’s celebrated poem, the new temporary exhibition in Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery explores how watercolour artists have captured the essence of the English countryside. The power of art is in demonstrating the ways in which so many artists capture things differently. On display is a superb watercolour of the Sussex countryside near Uckfield by Emerson Groom. The artist became a

celebrated painter and etcher, and these influences can be seen in the formality and almost illustrative elements of the painting, with hard lines and blocks of colour. Groom’s work is a contrast with the far more relaxed painting by Alice Blanche Ellis of “A Farm road Steyning - a Homeward Trek” where the pallete gives the impression of, rather than illustrates the glorious countryside. The museum’s watercolour collection has been built up extensively over the last year. One of the paintings on display, Gerald Ackermann’s Arundel Castle from the Downs, was donated to the collection by Toovey’s, the Washington based auction house. It compliments another view of the downs by Ackermann on display which shows Chanctonbury Ring from Storrington Downs and takes in the wonderful downland pastures that make Sussex such a popular haunt for tourists and were the motivation for the creation of the South Downs National

Park. With other works by Harrington, Penstone, Wilkinson, and a charming painting by Wainwright of sheep nestling in a hummock surrounded by pastures “on the Downs near Hassocks”, you can see why the English have a love affair with pastures. On England Pleasant Pastures Seen is currently exhibiting at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery until 23 March 2018. For more information, please visit: www.horshammuseum.org. Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm. Admission Free

Are there enough care home places in West Sussex to meet demand? Are new homes being built in the right place? What courses are available at colleges to train people for a care career? These are some of the questions that were looked into at a meeting of West Sussex Health and Adult Social Care Select Committee (HASC) this week. Among those to give evidence to the select committee were representatives from local colleges, district and borough planning teams, charity Skills for Care and West Sussex Partners in Care, which represents a number of care homes in the county. The meeting took place at 10.30am on Wednesday 17 January at County Hall in Chichester and was webcast on the County Council website at https://westsussex. public-i.tv/core/portal/webcast_ interactive/327333 The select committee’s agenda

was to: • assess and comment on the County Council’s actions to develop and support the care market in terms of demand, capacity, capability and quality • identify any gaps or issues to be addressed and • identify any issues for further/ future scrutiny. In the lead up to the meeting, Bryan Turner, Chairman of the Committee, said: “The County Council is facing unprecedented growth in demand for adult social care, due to increasing numbers aged between 75 to 84 and at 85+ in West Sussex. “Helping everyone in West Sussex to live long, active, independent and healthy lives, whatever their circumstances, is a key priority for the County Council and it is important for this committee to look in depth at capacity in the care home market and make sure any gaps are being addressed.”

Are businesses facing Facebook Armageddon?

Michelle Betts Social media is awash at the moment with discussions about Mark Zuckerberg’s (CEO Of Facebook) announcement last week for his plans for 2018. Mark released a statement saying this year the platform is making a major change and shifting it’s focus; “I’m changing the goal I give our product teams from focusing on helping you find relevant content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions. We started making changes in this direction last year, but it will take months for this new focus to make its way through all our products. The first changes you’ll see will be in News Feed, where you can expect to see more from your friends, family and groups.” Many businesses and marketeers have read this and decided this means ‘Facebook Zero’, business pages will no longer show in the newsfeed on the platform unless they pay. There is much scaremongering taking place that organic reach (people who see your posts without you paying for them to) is dead. However, organic reach has been on the decline for a number

of years for businesses, indeed on average organic reach is just 2% of your page audience. BUT, and this is a big BUT, if your business page is producing engaging content which generates interest and discussion with your target (and that is key - your target) audience then organic reach will not have declined as much for your business page. And, even with the new updates, your organic reach will be higher than average as Mark’s statement outlines engagement by communities will be key in this new Facebook world. It’s time for change and rather than looking at the announcement as apocalyptic, look at it as an opportunity to rethink your social media strategy. You could shift your focus to other platforms - remember though, Instagram is owned by Facebook so could go the same way! I believe it’s key to remember social media has always been about social networking, not social selling. No one goes on the platforms thinking ‘I need to buy x’, they have always used the platforms to engage with family and friends, to find out news and useful information. Consider how you can engage your target audience and build a community. You can no longer rely on ‘engagement bait’ asking for likes, reactions, shares or comments. Facebook have got wise to this and are cracking down hard

on it. You need to think ‘why am I posting this’ for each piece of content. Think about your audience and review how your content is adding value for them and making a difference. You will need a blend of content, some video, some live video and some graphics; mix it up to keep things interesting for your audience. Live video on Facebook receives on average six times as many interactions as other videos but this does not mean all your videos should be live or indeed all your content should be video! However, consistently posting live videos, perhaps at the same time each week so your audience starts to expect them, will help your reach and engagement. My thoughts on this shift for Facebook are to view it as an opportunity. Look at how you can weave storytelling into your social media posts and build a community around your content. If you struggle with live videos or any video at all, use your Facebook and Instagram business pages as a gallery, a brochure; showcase your blogs, useful articles, graphics and position your business as an expert in it’s field. Make sure your website links to your page so people can see your up to date content on Facebook when checking out your business. Talking of websites, its important to remember social media platforms are ‘borrowed spaces’. Your business can have a presence on there but you don’t own the platform; if Mark decided to shut down Facebook tomorrow there would nothing any of us could do about it. Drive people to your website and build your mailing lists as these are your assets - but ensure you are complying with data protection regulations and the new GDPR regulations (more on that in a later article!). Don’t forget to follow @ByJoveMedia on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to keep up to date with all things social media and @ TheDistrictPostHorsham for all the local news and information.

hit for the Hawth!

The Hawth’s pantomime for 2017/18, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, attracted an astounding 36,000 people to the Crawley venue during its four week run. The slightly longer run than previous years meant that more people than ever were able to enjoy the show, which starred television favourite Stephen Mulhern (Catchphrase, Saturday Night Takeaway) and brilliant Dame Molly Mop played by Michael J Batchelor. The success of the pantomime is no doubt down to the careful blend of ingredients for the festive family treat – produced, once again, by Evolution Productions (who have now brought 5 hit pantos to The Hawth). Audiences were treated to hilarious comedy routines, audience participation, amazing sets, including a brand new 3D ghost scene that had everyone jumping out of their seats. The surprise appearance of ‘Crawley’s favourite son’, Romesh Ranganathan, as the

magic mirror and jaw-dropping illusions were the icing on the cake. Feedback throughout the run was overwhelmingly positive, with many audience members commenting on Facebook and Twitter: “Blown away”, “Best panto to date”, “Absolutely Brilliant” and “worth every penny”, and many, borrowing Stephen Mulhern’s line, called it “Unbelievable”. Dave Watmore, General Manager at The Hawth, said: “I feel very proud when I look at our achievements for the past year. All The Hawth staff have worked incredibly hard throughout 2017 and it’s great to see these efforts rewarded. I’m sure that, as we celebrate our 30th anniversary this year, we can build on this success for an even better 2018. With Michael J Batchelor returning as Widow Twankey in Aladdin this December, and almost 6000 pantomime tickets already booked, it looks like we’re well on our way!”

Rock Challenge® and J Rock™ are ready to ‘Achieve the Extraordinary’ in 2018!

The Rock Challenge® events aim to inspire, engage and motivate young people to make healthy and positive lifestyle choices and, from Monday 29 January, The Hawth will be taken over by more than 1500 students as they rise to the challenge for another year. Organisers of The Rock Challenge® describe the event as an excellent opportunity for young people to perform live on a professional stage: “This experience encourages an adrenalin-based high gained through performing, rather than using tobacco, alcohol

SATURDAY 3rd FEBRUARY

or other drugs.” Teams of around 20 to 135 students, will have up to eight minutes to perform their chosen theme to an audience made up of family, friends, VIPs, sponsors and a panel of industry professionals. Each year we see a variety of themes, from the tackling of current social issues to the retelling of real-life events or fictional pieces, with every aspect of the performance devised, designed and created by the students. Supervising Event Manager, Sophia Campbell, explained: “Every school puts so much effort into their Rock Challenge® performance, the dedication from students and staff alike is fantastic to see! For many, Rock Challenge® is the highlight of the school year; I can’t wait to see what 2018 brings!” Involving more than 330 schools across the country, this year’s UK Rock Challenge® and J

Rock™ tour is expected to reach 20,000 young people between the ages of 7 and 18 years old and upwards of 38,000 audience members. The event will bring to the Hawth a number of schools from both East and West Sussex, Kent and Surrey, including Horsham’s Millais and Tanbridge House. With Rock Challenge® reaching its 23rd year in the UK in 2018, Be Your Best Foundation Chair, Mervyn Bishop MBE is looking forward to seeing the 2018 events take place across the UK: “Rock Challenge® and J Rock™ positively impacts the lives of thousands of young people every year. They are inspired to strive for a healthy lifestyle and drug free high through performing, not to mention the social, team building and creative benefits the initiative provides. I am honoured to be involved with this fantastic event once again.” Pictures courtesy of Nick Scott Photography.

International Concert Pianist Phillip Dyson has been described as simply “brilliant”, with a “wonderfully dry, very British sense of humour” and a recent recital in New York City accredited him as nothing less than “magnificent”. Phillip Dyson is recognised as one of Britain’s most sought after and innovative concert pianists, gaining enormous popularity for his unique abilities in both the classical and light music repertoire. His rapport with audiences, brilliant technique and innate sensitivity constantly win him the highest of praise. Phillip often broadcasts on the BBC and Classic FM, performs regularly with the

most prestigious orchestras and has a great international reputation in Europe and America. He returns to The Hawth as part of the Classical Concert Series for 2018 for an afternoon of the world’s most popular and best-loved piano classics, featuring Beethoven ‘Moonlight’ Sonata, Schubert Impromptu in G flat, Chopin Scherzo No.2, Rachmaninov Prelude in C sharp minor, Tchaikovsky Nutcracker Suite, and music by Debussy, Scott Joplin and Fats Waller. New Volleyball Club for girls open to 12-18 year olds A new volleyball club for girls is started on Tuesday 16 January at Farlington School, backed by Horsham District Sports Development. Organisers consider Farlington’s Sports Hall an excellent facility for volleyball and believe a girls’ school presents a good place to start and gain momentum for an all-girls’ initiative. The sessions will be open to young people, ranging from 12 to 18 years, in the local area. The initiative from Horsham District Sports Development, the Council’s sports team, aims to put youth volleyball on the local map. The coach will be Zbigniew Adamczyk, better known in the volleyball world as ‘Ziggy’, and he will bring a wealth of experience, having coached professionally at youth level on the continent and in his native Poland, where volleyball is the national sport. Volleyball is an exciting Olympic sport. Key skills are digging and setting to move the ball between teammates, serving the ball into play, spiking to attack the opposition half, and blocking to defend against attacks. The girls will learn all these moves and combine everything with team shape and tactics. Whether girls are new to the game, beginners or have played before, all will

be welcome to have fun, improve and make new friends. Sessions will run term-time on Tuesday evenings, 6.30-8pm starting on 16 January. The first two classes attended, by any individual, are free of charge. There is no need to book, just turn up. For queries, please contact Ian Ford: Ian.ford@horsham.gov.uk / 07764 146338. Sara Whittaker, Farlington’s

Director of Sport, said: “This is a fantastic initiative from Horsham Council’s Sports Team and we are delighted to provide our facilities. Getting girls involved in team sport has so many more benefits than just fitness: social skills, self-esteem, motivation and focus, to name just a few. I hope that girls from many other schools in and around Horsham will give this exciting sport a go.”

Rural retreat for keeping in touch

At Abingworth Meadows, Thakeham, the new family houses are carefully designed to take full advantage of the rural setting while offering the comfort and style of the latest in design and specification. Or head towards the coast which is also just half an hour away. After a stroll along the shore you can choose to head west to the vibrancy of Brighton or east to the stylish sailing city of Chichester which has an outstanding Festival Theatre and a

With so much on offer within easy reach and even more to enjoy right on the doorstep, Abingworth Meadows is appeal-

ing to homebuyers wanting the best of both retreat and accessibility. The first phase is almost sold out and the next release of homes has just been released priced from £699,950. If you’d like to discover more about the new 4 and 5 bedroom homes being created by Oakford Homes in conjunction with Abingworth Developments at this unique location, visit the show home and marketing suite which is open daily between 10am and 5pm, or call 01798 879140. Volunteering Opportunities Building Heroes based in Pulborough is a charity which retrains military veterans for a career in the building trades. They rely on fundraising activities to fulfil their vital role in helping ex-service personnel into employment and need enthusiastic, friendly and reliable people to support and increase their activities and to raise the profile of the charity in the local area. If you can help organise fundraising events (e.g. sponsored walk, swim, bake sale, coffee mornings, etc, liase with community groups who may hold fundraising events for them, make phone calls to potential supporters, offer support at existing events (e.g. handing out flyers, providing information, serving drinks) or various other support tasks they would love to hear from you. Are you passionate about your community and want to make a difference? Emerging Futures train individuals to work as part of a coaching team to support their local community. Family recovery coaches help individuals in a family develop their own wellbeing and support system and to make valued life choices. And recovery coaches support individuals to move in to the community from structured treatment, detox, residential rehabilitation and prison. Pulborough and District Community Care Association needs a Wednesday club volunteer to help with activities at its social club for older people, for example short mat bowls, games, bingo, and the occasional outing - all accompanied by tea and cake. The association also needs a telephonist to work from home to take appointments for its Community Transport Service. Carers Support West Sussex needs support group co-facilitators to help provide a confidential space for carers to meet, offload and gain information. They also need telephone support volunteers to help carers share emotions and reduce stress and isolation by providing active listening. And the charity seeks young adult carer engagement volunteers to meet and communicate regularly with young adult carers to support them. If you want to know more about any of the opportunities above or are thinking of volunteering and want to know what’s out there, just log on to www.hamsva.org.uk/opportunities and explore the many ways in which you can get involved in your community. Can you help beat hunger by offering a couple of hours at your local Tesco store on Nov 30 or December 1 or 2? Volunteers are needed to help collect donation at the UK’s largest food drive this Christmas. The collections take place at Tesco stores UK-wide when volunteers are asked to help collect food donations from customers for a few hours in their local store and hand out the FareShare shopping list. In just three hours you could collect enough food to make 600 meals and change someone’s Christmas. Details are available at www.fareshare.org.uk/food-collection where you can also sign up for a shift.

Horsham Ladies in seventh heaven again!

Horsham Ladies put brake on runaway Surbiton Sunday January 14 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Surbiton Ladies 2s 1 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Saturday January 13 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 7 0 Epsom Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Making a temporary return to their former Broadbridge Heath pitch, Horsham Ladies delivered their fourth straight win in a clinical clean sheet demolition of Epsom, whom they had beaten in Surrey in September. This was the Ladies’ second seven goal haul of the season – they overcame Staines with the same scoreline in November. And, they stamped their authority on the game right from the off – Tiff Male scoring in the opening minutes with what Ladies’ Club Captain Charlotte (CJ) While described as “a beautiful field goal.” Scoring from short

corners has sometimes presented problems for Horsham but their second and third goals came from the set pieces – Fran Crossley netting before Tiff Male fired home again. Then, after good defensive play, Louisa Denman took the ball up the length of the field, battled through to give Horsham a 4-0 cushion at the break. Horsham restarted with waves of attacks producing three consecutive short corners, following which Denman’s strong strike was well saved. Epsom were under pressure, rarely able to mount an attack. With more Horsham goals inevitable Crossley had added her second ahead of Suzy Clapp putting them further ahead from open play. Bex Ross then impressed with a long run, but her shot and others were saved – it was all Horsham, but somehow Epsom were keeping

them out with scrambled denials on the line. Horsham were building up with pin point passing and Sam Stares broke through twice, her second strike was rebuffed but Horsham kept pressing and Ross had a narrow miss but the icing was put on the cake when another Stares incision resulted in Tiff Male’s hat trick. Two late Crossley forays were thwarted but Horsham were overwhelming winners, Coach Chris Bowen quipping: “We could have won that 10 nil!” Captain Hannah Simpson said: “Getting an early goal really settled us down.” While Team Manager Jane Denman summed up with: “Their keeper had an outstanding game, it could have been even worse for Epsom. It was excellent to score seven without conceding – goal difference could be crucial at the end of the season.”

Second half injuries torpedo Horsham’s advantage

Saturday January 13 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Indian Gymkhana 4 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter With Horsham in urgent need of points to secure their league survival this was a target game,

especially as they had beaten Horsham Gymkhana 5-0 at home on the first week of the season. But, despite being two goals up in the second half, Horsham were unable to close down the game after two injuries depleted the team. In the first half Horsham were building up well with simple passes, a James

Cross deflection giving them the lead, which they maintained up to the break. And, it got better soon after the restart when Sean Pearcy added a second goal. But, first Cross sustained a collision injury and had to leave the field with a badly swollen knee, before the situation deteriorated further when Tim Upchurch suffered concussion after being hit on the back of the head. And, Horsham were penalised with yellow cards. Gymkhana’s drag flickers then came into the game with three short corner goals, followed by another in open play. Horsham kept pressing, earning the same number of shorts, but they were unable to convert. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “We went with 14 men and played well – until the two injuries pegged us back. Gymkhana had been struggling before Christmas, but they signed three internationals in January and had two former players return. They overpowered us when we were depleted.”

Last Sunday Horsham Ladies rounded off an excellent weekend of back to back games with a battling draw against Surbiton 2s at Long Ditton. Highly respected hockey powerhouse Surbiton were founded 144 years ago and reputed to be the second oldest hockey club in the world. They have 21 senior teams and a long list of honours, and the club will host the European Hockey Women’s Cup in May. Surbiton 2s top the league four points clear of Basingstoke and in 13 matches only one other team has managed to hold them to a draw, so this was an exceptional result for Horsham. With neither side giving an inch, there was no score up to the break. But, a quarter of an hour into the second half Bex Ross gave Horsham the lead. Surbiton equalised 10 minutes later and with both teams pushing but determined not to let in a goal, the game ended all square at one apiece. Ladies Club Captain Charlotte (CJ) White told the District Post: “It was a great, tough game with some of the best hockey we’ve played this season - a terrific team

performance with good movement and passing throughout and fighting spirit all the way. We were unlucky not to win, really.” Surbiton have scored 57 goals this season – 20 more than the next highest scoring team, but the Horsham defence

It was a great, tough game with some of the best hockey we’ve played this season has been a particularly impressive feature with the best record in the league – just 10 goals conceded in 13 matches – and they kept Surbiton at bay, CJ adding: “Our back line was really strong again, pulling off a memorable save on the line.” Horsham are fourth in the table, two points behind current runners up Basingstoke and one fewer than Teddington (who have a game in hand). Tomorrow, Saturday, the ladies return home for a noon start against eighth placed Brighton & Hove, whom they beat 3-1 at the coast in October. Staines remain rooted to the bottom of the table having lost all 12 of their games and scoring just two goals.

Horsham preyed upon by rampant Hawks Sunday January 14 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Oxford Hawks 8 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Oxford Hawks are on a roll – they top the table and had put 8 goals past the neighbouring University side on Saturday, whereas Horsham are struggling in penultimate spot, so this rearranged fixture was always likely to be a very tough game, Horsham’s fourth away encounter in eight days. And, so it proved to be. Horsham fought back well, though, and, with Sam MacDonald’s goal, would have drawn the second half but for what Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell described as: “Oxford’s freak ‘hit and hope’ reverse stick strike.” But, Horsham had been blown away with 5 goals in the first 15 minutes of the game. Oxford have scored 61 times this season – with 23 more goals than runners up London Edwardians

– and Oxford’s Andy Watts is the highest scorer in the league with 19 and Jack Biggs is ranked third with 11 – and, against Horsham, they both scored hat tricks, drag flicks featuring strongly. No team can rely on luck but “the rub of the green” is a huge help and Oxford were fortunate to benefit from every available break. But, when your luck is down things conspire against and Horsham have been suffering from a series of misfortunes – including Angus MacDonald’s car engine exploding, preventing him from playing, and one off injuries depleting the team. At Oxford, Horsham took the field with a young side and while the team was stretched, Al Campbell said: “The score-line doesn’t reflect how well the guys played – they grew in confidence and will have learned heaps. That will stand us in good stead for our remaining 10 fixtures. We’ve got a must win game against bottom of the table Henley this Saturday – with a 6.00 pm push back at Christ’s Hospital and the team are hoping to attract a big crowd.”

Horsham jump to third with a memorable double Saturday January 13 – London 2 South East Horsham 32 24 Beckenham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham came into this match fifth in the table one place above Beckenham, whom they had beaten 27-25 in Kent in September. A competitive game was assured and Horsham were delighted to complete their first double over Beckenham escalating the Green & Whites to third. Horsham got on the scoreboard in the opening minutes when, from a lineout, Declan Nwachukwu spun wide to fashion a try, well converted by Joe Wilde. But, Beckenham promptly responded with an unconverted try and a penalty try. Horsham, though, soon retook the lead with a penalty kicked over by Wilde and a maximised Mike Watts try. Moments later Watts latched onto a great cross field kick from Jordan Bell for Horsham’s third try, giving them a 22-12 advantage at the break. On 51 minutes the ever speedy Nwachukwu intercepted half

Boro overwhelmed by rampant Dover after the break Saturday January 13 – London 2 South East Dover 78 7 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough had beaten Dover at home in a hard fought game in September, but since then the Kent side had moved up to sixth with wins over upper table Horsham and Hove. Boro have been a tricky proposition at home but a reluctance to travel has frequently mitigated against them on away trips. For the visit to east Kent 25 players declared themselves unavailable for a variety of reasons, condemning Boro to take the field with 14 men and ending with 13 on the pitch. Nevertheless, Boro soon posted a converted try when debutant Charlie Williams got over the line. But, that was as good as it got for Boro. They trailed 28-7 at the break before being overrun in the second half. Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders telling the District Post: “As we tired they ran round our flanks, piling up 50

second half points. Our next game is a visit to Charlton Park – they’re fourth with a big old pack and beat us at home in October. Mathematically

As we tired they ran round our flanks, piling up 50 second half points we can stay up, but it’s going to be mighty tough because we’ll need to win at least four games out of eight, with favourable results elsewhere.” Unbeaten, Dartfordians remain top by a street and, at the other extreme, Barking are anchored to the foot of the table after losing 88 nil last Saturday. Boro occupy the penultimate berth, 11 points behind 10th club Deal & Betteshanger.

A round up of notable national & international sporting events for 2018

Sport Russell Bedford With January approaching its end already, the sporting memories of 2017 are slowly making way for those that 2018 will create. Its an action packed year with several notable events sure to increase the excitement levels of both the hardcore sports fan and the casual arm chair pundit. First up is the 6 nations beginning on Feb 3 , can England repeat the success of last year or will there be a different winner? Early odds indicate that the red and whites remain favourites to retain the title however Ireland are no pushovers and are thought of as the 2nd best team in the competition. Starting the same month are the winter Olympics in South Korea, already courting lots of media coverage due to the possible inclusion of North Korea. Its sure to be a spectacular event, although don’t go searching for Britain near the top of the medal list. A recent virtual medal table based on predicted results shows Britain

ranked 21st out of all competing nation’s picking up five medals, none gold unfortunately. However look out for our best competitors Lizzy Yarnold, Elise Christie and James Woods. All expected to deliver some level of success in what would be our best ever winter games if we achieve those 5 predicted medals. The following month the Paralympic winter games take place and after sending 12 competitors to Sochi in 2014 where we picked up 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze. We will be looking to improve on what was our most successful winter Paralympics, At the time of writing the team has not been announced but there is confidence amongst the coaches that those competing will deliver success. Approaching the end of March, Lewis Hamilton will return to the track in an attempt to retain his drivers world championship title. Last season began as a battle between the Mercedes of Hamilton and the Ferrari of Vettel but as the season reached its tail end, the wheels, literally fell off the Germans title aspirations and

some inspired driving from the British hero saw a 4th world title become his. This season promises to be much tougher though with rule changes, driver changes and engine changes, don’t dismiss Hamilton but keep an eye on those in red! The first race is march 25th in Australia with the season concluding in November. As we head into April three huge events will start to dominate the back pages, the commonwealth games in Australia begin on the 4th, the masters at Augusta on the 5th and then the grand national on the 14th . Last year saw a 14-1 shot cross the line first, one for Arthur giving Derek Fox a maiden national win. At this stage its too early to tell who

the runners and riders will be but early indications would suggest minella rocco could be worth a flutter. With April reaching its end and May beginning, the sports action reaches another level as the football season reaches its dramatic conclusion, both the FA cup and Scottish cup (19th may) are always passionate affairs then a week later its the turn of the champions league. What chance do we have of seeing a British club replicating the past successes of Liverpool, Manchester United or Chelsea? It doesn’t stop there as the world cup kicks of on June 14th in Russia. Could this finally be the year we see the three lions raise one of sports most coveted trophies? Many say we have our strongest collection of players in a long time but there are just as many saying its unlikely we will ever see similar scenes to 1966 again. Early tournament favourites are Germany and France and in a competition missing big nations like Holland and Italy there is every opportunity we could see a closer tournament than in

recent years. As the world cup reaches its latter stages the lawns of Wimbledon will be echoing to the sounds “new balls please” as the annual tennis tournament takes place. Starting on July 2nd there will, as ever be high hopes resting on Andy Murray but at the same time the pressure on Rodger Federer to win yet another title will be just as tough. Never rule out an outsider though and assuming all goes well, keep an eye on Alexander Zverev. Now for many, the events I’ve mentioned here pretty much fulfil their needs for the sporting year but remember added to all this excitement we’ve got the tour de France, the open, the moto gp, the Davis cup, the continuation of Anthony Joshuas quest for domination, the start of a new football season and the darts..... then we’ve also got, the challenge cup, the superbowl, the introduction of the UEFA nations league, the hockey world cup..... It never stops, its gonna be great!

Another win moves Horsham up the table Car crash and breakdown postpones Cup Quarter Final Tuesday January 16 – Sussex Senior Cup Quarter Final Pagham v Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Photo by John Lines Saturday January 13 – The Bostik League – South Division Whyteleafe 0 2 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Both sides had been in good recent form but Horsham notched up a hat trick of wins, escalating them to 11th in the table after inflicting an unaccustomed defeat on Whyteleafe. Church Lane has not always been a happy hunting ground for the Hornets, but they impressed with a confident all round clean sheet display. Horsham started strongly with Joe Shelley striking a Tony Nwachukwu header only for Whyteleafe’s John Scarbor-

ough to clear off the line. The hosts responded but Josh Pelling in the Horsham goal comfortably negated the attack. Horsham were defending well and creating scoring opportunities, too, with Lewis Hyde heading a Charlie Harris cross over the bar before Toby House scored his 14th goal of the campaign, crashing in Nwachukwu’s supply. Scott Kirkwood then unleashed a forlorn strike from afar ahead of wayward Whyteleafe attempts comprising a long range blast, a free kick and two further efforts, none of which troubled Horsham. However, on the restart, Whyteleafe did test Pelling when Sam Clayton struck a fizzer but the keeper pulled off a stunning save to maintain Hor-

sham’s lead. Kyle Merson in the Whyteleafe goal denied Kirkwood before a Harris blast was also pushed away. The woodwork then kept Whyteleafe at bay and another home attack came and went before, with half an hour remaining, the Hornets doubled their lead when Jack Hartley threaded the ball past Merson to score from close range. After an ambitious Horsham appeal for a penalty came to nothing it was Horsham’s turn to hit the post, Harris being thwarted, and then Hartley firing wide. With Horsham controlling the game for the final 10 minutes, their two goals were more than sufficient to deliver a relatively comfortable win.

Horsham’s Sussex Senior Cup Quarter Final against Pagham was postponed on Tuesday night after a serious car accident on the A2 leaving London. The car, driven by Hakeem Adelakun, who was accompanied by two other Horsham players – Liam MacDevitt and goalkeeper Josh Pelling - is understood to be a write off. And, another car, transporting four more players to Pagham’s Nyetimber Lane ground broke down on the south coast. Horsham CEO John Lines told the District Post: “I was near Chichester, travelling to Pagham, when, just before 7pm, the message came through from Jeff Barrett, our Secretary, that the game had been postponed. Our main concern is for the players involved in the accident, but I understand that while they were shaken up they are not injured. The conditions around Chichester were appalling – it was hammering down with rain and sleet, so I’m not sure whether the game would have been completed even if we had been able to start.”

Horsham’s team had already been restricted because two players were cup-tied and others were not available and they only had six players at the ground. Also floodlight regulations at Pagham impose a time limit beyond which games are not allowed to continue. So, there was little option than to postpone the game, the decision being confirmed following a discussion between the match referee and the County FA Representative, who was on his way to the ground. John Lines added: “Both teams have been playing well – Pagham are fourth in the Sussex Combination Football League – so we were expecting a tight game. It is obviously disappointing for all concerned but we must now await details of the rearranged fixture.” Meanwhile, Mr Lines gave us an update on the Hornets’ new Hop Oast ground: “The purchase has been completed, along with financial matters relating to the housing at the Holbrook Club, and ecologists are just concluding their tree work at Hop Oast. The nets protecting the new ground from the neighbouring driving range will be going up on January 29th – that will take about two weeks - and once that has been done we can start the excavation work on site.”
