Horsham GP coverage slated martin read

Reporter

The BBC has released information regarding the number of patients per GP across England – highlighting a very considerable variation, described by doctors’ leaders as “shocking” - and Horsham and Mid Sussex is shown as the second worst area in England. According to the BBC statistics, Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire is best served with 1,192 patients per GP, compared with 2,997 in Horsham and Mid Sussex, with only the Swale district of Kent quoted as having an even higher ratio (3,342). There is no official recommendation for the number of patients that a GP should have because of the varied composition of local populations: a more elderly patient profile, a high number of child residents, or poor health conditions in a neighbourhood can cause considerable variations in demand. Also, in our district, the population is increasing rapidly, necessitating careful advance planning of infrastructure requirements, including maternity arrangements. At least one local surgery – Riverside – states: “We are taking on new patients” and other websites consulted were not displaying “no vacancy” notices. And, in a non-scientific survey specially conducted by the District Post,

Horsham’s disappointing showing was greeted with some surprise by local residents. Our surgeries are always busy, and while there were some adverse comments about difficulties in making a same day appointment, there was significant praise for the caring nature of assistance administered, as generally confirmed by

...there was significant praise for the caring nature of assistance administered patient feedback on the websites of Horsham surgeries - where patients are invited to join a Patient Participation Group, giving the opportunity to liaise with the surgery about the services provided. At the Conservative Party Conference in 2014 the then Prime Minister, David Cameron, promised that everyone in England would have access to GP services 7 days a week by 2020. But, while there has been movement towards this with the extension of availability, a straw poll of the opening hours of local surgeries suggests that there is still some way to go if the promise is to be fulfilled. Meanwhile, people spoken to by the District

Post felt that the entirety of local health care provision needs to be taken into account, including the Minor Injuries Unit at Horsham Hospital, the Crawley Urgent Treatment Centre, open 24 hours a day every day of the year, and A&E facilities further afield. The national NHS 111 advice line was also mentioned in conjunction with, for pressing, serious cases, the 999 option. There is acknowledgement that the NHS is under strain, coupled with the thought that perhaps people now have a higher expectation of the system and have become unaccustomed to managing the more routine problems themselves, and that consulting a pharmacy, or seeing a practice nurse, could avoid the need to refer to a GP. Further, surgeries say that the substantial number of missed appointments creates unnecessary work, reducing patients’ access. The BBC figures mention that the caseload of the average GP has increased by nearly 80 patients to 1,734. To address that development more GPs are being recruited, with signs of improvement, all training places being said to be filled, which has not previously been the experience. Although, it must be acknowledged that training GPs is a lengthy process and escalating house prices in the south of England can act as a deterrent for junior doctors. In the meantime, despite the workload of GPs and their surgeries, local opinion suggests overall satisfaction with the treatment dispensed.

Improving special educational needs provision in schools Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities will have more opportunity to go to school closer to where they live, under new proposals outlined by West Sussex County Council. Richard Burrett, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, has agreed to instigate a programme aimed at increasing the number of Special Support Centres (SSCs) within mainstream schools. SSCs allow children with additional needs, such as autism or social, emotional and mental health needs, to be educated in mainstream settings. There are currently 32 SSCs in West Sussex, and the proposals would see up to 11 more created over the next three years, opening up more than 100 extra places across the county. Phase One would see two new SSCs created at nursery schools in Chichester and Horsham, and two more added to primary schools, with the aim of opening this September. Mr Burrett said: “The large rise in the number of young people identified with additional needs, and the shortage of local provision, has seen more children placed in specialist schools outside of their local area. “Strengthening and expanding our SEND provision in mainstream schools will allow more children to receive high quality

education locally, reducing their travel and helping them build friendships in their local communities.” Phases Two and Three could then see seven more SSCs created in primary and secondary schools across West Sussex. The number of children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) has gone from 3,423 in March 2015 to 4,912 in August 2018, an increase of 43%. Local authorities fund this, and now also support people with SEND up to the age of 25. With no additional funding from central Government, West Sussex is having to balance its overall High Needs budget. Investing in the new SSCs would enable more West Sussex children to be educated locally, in line with the county council’s current SEND Strategy. It would also reduce the council’s high travel costs because of the number of children currently placed in expensive, out-of-county provision, creating a predicted overall budget saving. Children in current placements would not be affected by this proposal. The proposals were discussed at the Children’s and Young People’s Services Select Committee last week, where members endorsed the development of a full business case for consideration within the council’s Capital Programme.

Cash boost for Scooter Safety

A recent cash boost of £790, made available by Horsham District Council, will allow local volunteer group, Horsham Scooter Safety to continue with its vital work helping mobility scooter drivers avoid accidents and be more aware of other pavement users. Cllr Peter Burgess, Chairman of Horsham District Council, presented a cheque to David Searle, team leader of Horsham Scooter Safety, at a scooter safety session held in The Barn in the Park, Horsham last week (week commencing 14 January). He commented: “I know that there have been numerous accidents involving these vehicles. Several have been severe and have resulted in deaths. “I am sure that by attending one of these sessions, scooter drivers will be much more conscious of the safety of themselves and others. “As a council, we are pleased to help with the great work that this local organisation does.” Horsham Scooter Safety team leader, David Searle, added: “We are very grateful

to have been given this grant, which will allow us to promote our safety message and include more people throughout the District in our activities. “If anyone has recently started using a scooter, or is thinking of getting one, then a free Scooter Safety Session will help them considerably. “Experienced drivers will also benefit -- you are never too old to learn.” Also present were Horsham District Council’s Billingshurst Neighbourhood Wardens, Barry Faust and Glyn Thomas, who agreed that they gained first-hand knowledge of scooter driving which will help them advise users in the areas they cover. The project was conceived by Horsham District Older Peoples Forum and Horsham Town Community Partnership, and started in May 2018. So far, over 40 scooter drivers have benefited by attending an enjoyable, instructive, free two-hour session. More information on Scooter Safety Sessions, is available from the website: horshamscootersafety.org.uk or by phone: 01403 269384.

Delight as Warnham Discovery Hub attracts EU funding

Horsham District Council is celebrating with the Friends of Warnham Nature Reserve, as plans for a new Discovery Hub at Warnham Local Nature Reserve have been given the go-ahead. The Council has been awarded some £278,000 by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development who support investment in public recreational infrastructure. Additional funding, from both the Council and the Friends of Warnham Local Nature Reserve, is being added to the project with grants of £90,000 and £10,000 respectively. The current site on Warnham Road, Horsham was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 1987 and has grown in popularity ever since. Already home to a small visitor centre and cafÊ, the addition of the Discovery Hub will draw visitors from across the District and beyond. The Discovery Hub, will boast a unique octagonal design created from wood and one-way glass. Large panoramic windows will offer breathtaking views across the Nature Reserve’s millpond. The space will be used for both edu-

cational and leisure purposes and will tell the story of the industrial, natural and social heritage of this important nature and conservation reserve. In addition, to the Hub, a new hide will be constructed, replacing the existing tern hide, as well as a new discovery trail that will incorporate the whole reserve, and a new entrance garden that will take inspiration from the works of noted local poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley. “We are delighted that the Discovery Hub has been given the green light with EU funding explained Councillor Jonathan Chowen, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community and Culture, “The team have worked closely with the Friends of Warnham LocalNature Reserve, the general public and the funding authority to make a robust case for this important addition to the Horsham District. “We want to encourage visitors old and new to come to the reserve and discover not only the wide variety of wildlife, flora and fauna that thrive in the wetlands, but also appreciate the important part that this land has played in shaping our

District, from its historical links to the iron industry, to its modern day home for herons and kingfishers. “Our aim is to inspire the next generation to protect the reserve and appreciate the impacts modern life can have on our environment. The discovery trail is due to be completed by June 2019, with structural work on the Discovery Hub scheduled to start towards the end of the summer. Once underway, the project should take three months to complete with the reserve remaining open to the public for most of the time and disruption kept to a minimum. The whole project is due to be completed and officially opened at the end of the year in celebration of the Horsham District Year of Cuture 2019. YMCA Sleep Easy 2019 is coming!

District Post Managing Director Davey Pearson with Horsham Co working at last year’s Sleep Easy YMCA DownsLink Group will once again be staging Sleep Easy sleepouts across our area - and this is our most ambitious year yet, with five events taking place.

Four events will be running simultaneously in Brighton & Hove, Horsham, Eastbourne and Guildford on Friday 22 March, and we’re partnering with Crawley Open House to run an event in Crawley on Thursday 21 March.

The aim of these events is to raise awareness of youth homelessness, and vital funds to continue our work. You have already done something amazing by sleeping out last year, and we’d love you to join us again! Sleep Easy is a community event, so why not bring along some friends, family or colleagues? Last year saw a record-breaking 171 people take part, raising over £62,000 – and this year we’re aiming for £75,000! The money raised this year will go to the Life Change Fund to help young people locally, and for activities that will engage and inspire our supported residents. In Crawley, half the money raised will go to Crawley Open House - a charity providing support and services for those suffering from homelessness, unemployment, loneliness, discrimination or other forms of social exclusion. MP welcomes new vision for Arun Valley

Arundel & South Downs MP, Nick Herbert, has welcomed a report which sets out a new approach to the management of the Arun Valley, upgrading flood defences while also creating new wetland habitats for flood storage. ‘A Vision for the Arun Valley’ has been produced as the result of two years’ work by the Arun Valley Vision Group (AVVG). The Group launched the report at an event chaired by Mr Herbert, at The White Swan Hotel in Arundel on Friday (18 January). The AVVG was set up in January 2017 on Mr Herbert’s initiative as a community partnership made up of major stakeholders in the Lower River Arun Valley. The MP said that a number of challenges, including climate change, pressures on public spending, and changing agricultural and environmental policy as a result of Brexit, necessitated a new approach to management of the Valley. The Group comprises representatives of the Environment Agency, farmers and landowners in the valley, local authorities, the South Downs National Park Authority, Natural England, the Forestry Commission, the RSPB, the Sussex Wildlife Trust and others. The Group has worked in collaboration to develop a viable long-term vision for the management of the Valley. Their vision is based on the concept of ‘Adaptive Management’, an approach which seeks to protect key areas of importance by upgrading local flood defence structures, but would also create wetland habitats for flood storage for long-term flood

resilience. The report specifies lead roles for the various agencies involved, with further work being facilitated by the South Downs National Park Authority. Andrew Lee, Director of Countryside & Policy Management of the South Downs National Park Authority, said: “The South Downs National Park Authority strongly supports initiatives taking a landscape-scale approach. The River Arun Vision heralds two years of collaboration of a range of local partners in the development of a more sustainable future for wildlife, people and community in the Lower River Arun. We look forward to being part of helping the Vision turn into action and outcomes on the ground.” Tom Ormesher, Environment & Land Use Adviser of the National Farmers Union South East, said: “The NFU is happy to support the proposals within the AVVG Report and I believe the document provides a very strong platform to work from.” Peter Knight, Estate Manager of the Norfolk and Angmering Park Estates, said: “The Norfolk and Angmering Park Estates have been actively involved within the AVVG over the past two years. Flooding issues within the valley will become more self-evident - not only in the long term, but more importantly in the short term. The Environment Agency’s decision to cease maintenance in certain sections of the river concentrates the mind and solutions will need to be found sooner rather than later. With partnership funding having been discussed at length, this still requires

further investigation. Whilst not all objectives have been achieved within the time period, the group has identified, amongst others, the need for an organisation to take forward the foundations laid out by the group.” Addressing the meeting, Mr Herbert said: “I would like to thank all members of the AVVG, especially the co-chairs, Dr John Godfrey and Gill Farquharson, for your hard work and the quality of your report. I will send the report to the Secretary of State for Environment and Rural Affairs, Michael Gove, pointing out that the proposed landscape-scale approach to the management of the Arun Valley has the support of key stakeholders, and is consistent with the Government‘s approach to environmental management and the future shape of the farm payments system. “The more that there can be a coherent view involving lots of different partners, the stronger the case that we can make to government bodies. The strength of this group and this report is that it has brought together people that didn’t necessarily share the same view about how the valley should be managed in future, but it has got everybody sitting down together in the same room. “I would encourage everybody to continue the work together, even if you have slightly different views. What unites us is that we all live here, work here and really care about this valley. Together, I think we can ensure this beautiful part of this world is maintained.” The report can be read at www. avvg.co.uk.

Horsham Lions Christmas Project update Earlier this month The District Post published an article that set out the Christmas Service Projects undertaken by the members of Horsham Lions Club, which helped 58 needy local families, 141 of their children and 8 young people that left Social Services Care and had become independent people within our Community. In addition, details were provided about the number of locations and venues where Horsham Lions and their supporters raised money throughout December 2018 by virtue of the generosity of members of the public that live and or work in the Horsham Community.

The club can now reveal how much was also raised, again throughout December 2018, by 10 local pubs and businesses that supported The Lions Christmas Raffle. Through the generosity of these local pubs, businesses and their clients or customers, a further sum of £1178.29 has been collected. The total raised by the Christmas Santa Appeal, the Christmas Collections and the Hamper Raffle is £5892.42 Lions President, Clare Wilson, now wishes to take the opportunity, on behalf of Horsham Lions members / supporters and the generous members of our Horsham Community, of “thanking every one for the support of

those people in most need in our community. It is greatly appreciated. Horsham Lions would also like to wish everyone who live and work in our Horsham Community an enjoyable and successful New Year.” The next major event is Horsham Lions 8th Swimarathon in support of The Jigsaw Trust, a Charity that works with Autistic Children and young adults, which takes place on Sunday 17 March 2018. Rotary Christmas tree re-cycling scheme raises funds for local charity

The Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District has provided a seasonal service that is welcomed by the Community and which helps to ‘green’ the area. For the second year running, Rotary members collected Christmas trees after twelfth

night then recycled them at an Ashington farm to provide material for use on the farm - all for a minimum donation of £5 per tree. The scheme was publicised by labelling trees in participating garden centres and distributing leaflets during Rotary’s Christmas

collections. The trees were collected from households in the Storrington, Pulborough and Ashington areas with the help of Chanctonbury Lions Club. This year, 184 trees were collected, raising £1,000, which was donated to Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. The trees are chipped, with the residue ready for use on a public footpath around the farm, by Rob Dakin of Findon Valley Tree Care who donates his fee to the charity. Rotary’s project coordinator, Ray Miles, said: “We were really pleased with how the project has gone this year. Residents were delighted to avoid all the inconvenience and mess of transporting trees to the tip or burning them, knowing that they will have a ‘green’ end use and that a very worthwhile charity is to benefit in the process.” Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club is grateful to all of its partners in this venture, including Chanctonbury Lions, Chris & Len Earl and Findon Valley Tree Care; to the participating Christmas Tree retailers - Squires Washington Garden Centre, Wyevale Pulborough, Tate’s of Sussex Old Barn Garden Centre, Big Plant Nursery and Gatley’s Country Store; and particularly to all the local residents who supported the project.

Practical support to keep you warm this winter Horsham District Council is offering local residents a completely free service called LEAP (Local Energy Advice Partnership) to help them save money and keep their homes warm and cosy. Keeping warm is an important part of keeping healthy, particularly during the winter months, and heating bills can be expensive with many people struggling to afford them. If you are an eligible resident, you can get a free home visit from a friendly, qualified Home Energy LEAP Advisor. The advisor can help check if you are on the cheapest energy tariffs (average savings are £280 a year), install free simple energy saving measures, give you day-to-day energy efficiency hints and tips, and ensure your heating system is set up to keep you warm and save money. The LEAP advisor will be able to refer you for grants for heating improvements. LEAP can also arrange a telephone advice service to help with benefits, debt and other money problems. You may be eligible for a LEAP visit if you have a low income, receive tax credits or housing benefit, receive an

income or disability related benefit, or have a long term illness or disability. LEAP visits are available to qualifying people who are homeowners or rent either from a housing association or private landlord. To find out more, or to book a home visit, call LEAP direct on 0800 060 7567 or apply online at www.applyforleap.org.uk. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, commented: “We’re delighted to be able to offer this service to our residents. “We regularly hear about fuel poverty in the news and we know it’s a real concern for some local people, so we’re pleased that they can now benefit from this expert advice. “As well as helping to keep residents’ homes warm and their fuel costs down, the scheme will also help the Council be more environmentally friendly and manage its impact on the environment for future generations. “I would encourage as many people as possible to check out if they are eligible to reap these benefits.”

Well, as Petra at New U says “it is never too late to start.” So whether you have slowed your pace or given up altogether she can help you reach those goals. In a relaxed, friendly environment Petra can take you on a health and wellbeing journey with her variety of classes that are open to everyone. Without the need for membership you can feel comfortable sampling spin, boxfit, kettle box or outdoor training with no commitment to attend regularly. Petra is sure you will come back for more though, especially the spin classes.

“Nothing releases endorphins like spin and as it is a ‘no impact’ activity, it’s perfect if you are suffering from any joint or muscular issues.” Originally hailing from the 9-5 world it wasn’t until she took part in marathons that Petra saw the hugely positive impact that exercise could have on an individual. She was inspired to share that buzz with others and so she completely changed her career path. 10 years on, and with multiple qualifications, she continues to inspire ensuring the atmosphere in her classes is always positive, interactive and motivational. “Anyone can attend and hit their goals” she

Another new addition is the opportunity to have a ‘Nails and Nutrition’ session - have your nails done whilst discussing a personal nutrition plan that promises to keep you eating things you like, but revolutionise results. With prices being so incredibly competitive you can enjoy it all without breaking the bank. Family relaunch popular children’s soft play centre After what may have felt like an eternity to the little people in your life, Happyscamps, the ever popular soft play area is back! Under new ownership, the Family run team have completely changed the look of the popular Childrens venue to make it even more friendly and welcoming than it was before. The Mother/Daughter collective have been working hard to realise a dream and make something special for Families in Horsham, a quick wander around the new facility shows that the work has paid off. During the closure, Sophie Al-

len and Chloe Taylor, the original Managers, were approached by the owner with an offer to buy. They decided to bring their mum, Nicki Parsons, in on the venture, and it was from here that a dream started to turn into a reality. A large open plan area where Parents can watch their Children play on the array of soft play activities without loosing sight of them is accompanied by a roleplay area as well as the excellent little cafe that makes a variety of treats for yourself and your little army. All reasonably priced and very aware of the increase in food

allergies or preferred diets it has been a mission from the start to ensure all people are catered for. The menu is often seasonal too with soups available when its cold and ice creams when it is hot. Compared to many soft play areas, the Children are entitled to two hours worth of playtime, rather than one and this really emphasises the value you get when you visit, the aim being that you are encouraged to enjoy your time at a relaxing pace rather than try and cram everything into sixty minutes. Using the wristband scheme

made popular in leisure facilities all over the Country it is impossible for the venue to be over crowded and such has its early success been that some mornings they have had to post via social media that they can no longer

We wanted somewhere that Families with very small Children could feel more comfortable take admissions until the spaces become available again. It seems to be the Mornings that fill up fast at the moment with Sophie mentioning that, “It slows down a lot in the afternoons as parents might be on school runs, so come and visit us then if you have a little one!” Another unique feature of Happyscamps is the audience it targets, Chloe adds, “We are only aimed at under 5’s whereas many other soft play areas allow

Children much older. We wanted somewhere that Families with very small Children could feel more comfortable.” This helps for other goals the ladies have, “We want this to be a place that feels like a community, where friends and family can meet up, or where you can make new friends whilst your Child plays.” says Sophie. It doesn’t stop there though as the community spirit they look to create will extend to a much wider customer group, “We know that there are a lot of Parents that may have a Child with a learning disability, or a Child that may be deaf, or partially sighted. We are looking to put together some workshops for Children and Parents that feel they may be alone in what they are experiencing and ensure we give them an opportunity to feel just as included as other Children.” One thing that all three ladies agree on is how much support the public have shown, “The customers have been so supportive and we can see how much people are enjoying it, we get so much repeat custom and when we overhear Children upset that it is time to go, we feel that we must have done things right.” For more information give Happyscamps a call on 01403 754597.

Their score was highest of all 84 pairs playing across England. Gill said: “We were delighted to have won! It was our group of students’ first competition; we have great fun and have made good friends.” Jane Handley, Chair of Horsham Bridge Club added: “They won with an amazing score of more than 77 percent; six percent ahead of second place. All our first year students did well and enjoyed the event. The club runs weekly courses for first and second year bridge students, and several ‘improvers’ sessions. Doing it differently this year New Drama Classes for Adults with

Like most Horsham residents, you probably have some new years resolutions this year and, although it’s a giant cliché, they are likely to involve doing more exercise or being more active. But for those of us that don’t fancy the traditional gym route and come out in a cold sweat at the mere thought of going for a run, what else is there? At The Bridge Leisure Centre they are offering something a little different this year. Climb Fit brings together all the fun of the climbing arena with aspects of modern functional fitness. You can expect plenty of laughs along

the way, but will also be challenged with body weight exercises, core bags, slam balls and much more. Personal Trainer and qualified climbing instructor, Carly, explained why Climb Fit is the best of both worlds: “Climb Fit provides a total body workout. You’ll work your legs and arms on the awesome climbing walls, then (through the use of functional movement based exercise) you’ll work your muscles head to toe including that all important core! Combined with the adrenaline of the climbs, you’ll raise your heart rate resulting in an improved cardiovascular performance”. And it’s not just about the physical side of things. Climbing also has many mental health benefits, as it involves problem solving, hand eye co-ordination and judgement. Participants will build confidence, self esteem and enjoy the social setting that climbing offers helping to reduce stress levels. Scared of heights? No worries; Carly wasn’t a great fan at the start either, but her climbing qualification has helped to overcome this fear and she’d love to help you do the same. So why not give it a go? Climb fit sessions run Thursdays at 7.00pm. Call The Bridge on 01403 211311 to book your first session.

Special Needs opens in Horsham

Ariel Company Theatre, which has six established drama schools across Sussex, is delighted to have opened a new weekly drama class for adults with special needs. Drawing on many years of experiences working with students of all ages and abilities, Ariel believes that the benefits of acting, singing and dance extend beyond the achievement of performing on stage, but provides skills which benefit every aspect of daily life: “The Othellos classes in Hor-

sham are thoughtfully devised for adults who may have conditions, such as Autism, Asperger’s, Down Syndrome, or who may be wheelchair users or have other physical challenges. Creative, full of fun and run by experienced tutors the classes make the Arts accessible to all, providing everyone with the chance to sing, dance, act and express themselves in a fun and safe environment.” The new classes will take place every Monday at 6.45pm for one hour at the Roffey Millennium

Hall, Horsham. Free trials are available and anyone aged 16 or over is welcome to come along. The classes provide a great opportunity to make friends and learn new skills and Ariel’s Buddy system means that students are supported, encouraged and made to feel very welcome at these brand new classes. Once a year students will participate in a showcase as part of the main Academy giving them the chance to perform on stage at the Hawth Theatre. Othellos Tutor, Daisy Minords, said: “We are so excited to be bringing these new classes to Horsham. They provide the perfect opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills. The social aspect of these classes is very important and we often have other opportunities for the students to get involved in, from our community choirs to seeing Ariel productions, or participating in community events. Come along and give the classes a try! Everyone is welcome regardless of ability!” To book a free trial, call 01444 250407. Classes cost just £6 per week, payable on a pay-as-you go basis. Schumann’s Cello Concerto: The Review

Entertainment Phil Dennett Listening to the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra splendidly performing Schumann’s Cello Concerto at the Dome on Sunday some traditionalists must have thought he had an idea worth taking up again by modern audiences. Stickler Schumann detested applause between movements. He solved the problem in this expressive concerto by running the three movements without intervals, linked by some cunning bridges. There is a modern trend for people unaware of the etiquette of concert-going to burst into applause if they think an individual movement is well played. This seems to be tolerated out of politeness by musicians who in reality must find it distracting. Schumann’s subtle score and the orchestra’s fine playing ensured you could not spot the joins in this moving performance where the soloist and the other musicians nailed

the moderate, slow and lively tempos of the three linked “movements”. The depressed composer jumped into the Rhine in a suicide attempt soon after finishing this piece and the orchestra accurately reflected the light and dark sides of his moods. Cellist and director Thomas Carroll moved on from delightfully capturing the beautiful but sorrowful opening into some quicksilver work sharing some neatly-judged interplay with the orchestra, with delicate woodwind supplying good contrast. He showed smoothly controlled legato in the longing of the slow movement. There was a spirited “conversation” with an orchestra cellist before he put some warming fire in the belly of the vivacious third movement in an immensely satisfying performance that always held the attention. Prokofiev’s fine Symphony Number 1 in D Major provided an enticing entrée to the afternoon, with gurgling bassoon, dancing strings and nimble flute in the mix with some lyrical violin and cello in an absorbing performance of precision and agility that zipped along at a quick pace. Those who have loved holidays in Scotland would have relished the echoes of the glens and lochs the orchestra so colourfully portrayed in a sparkling Mendelssohn’s Symphony Number 3, called the “Scottish”. The composer wrote it 13 years after walking in Scotland, and the musicians showed that this splendid piece was worth the wait as they captured all its open spaces, grandeur and romance in a widescreen portrayal.

TV’s Dr Dawn Harper visits later living community in Faygate

On Saturday (19 January), Durrants Village later living community, in Faygate, hosted an event to launch a new Assisted Living package at the village, featuring a Q&A with TV’s Dr Dawn Harper. The free seminar involved industry experts discussing the benefits of Inspired Villages’ new product, launched specifically for those who are looking for additional services that offer them flexibility and allow them to remain independent in their own home. Assisted Living is a new product from Inspired Villages, the company behind Durrants Village, where residents can benefit from additional services, such as cleaning, meal provision and light shopping, while remaining independent in their own home, with their own front door. Specific Assisted Living apartments are now available to rent or to buy; representing the best of both worlds, because of the options available and the costs associated. Calculations show that this

rental model is a very economic, flexible and positive solution for those with any care needs. And when purchasing, residents are able to retain the valuable equity they have secured in their homes over the years, which can be a real comfort. The Q&A panel consisted of industry experts, including: Dr Dawn Harper (TV presenter on ITV’s This Morning and author of Live Well to 101), John Kennedy (an independent Adult Care Specialist) and James Cobb, Director of Inspired Villages. Audience members were given the opportunity to discover more about Assisted Living options as well as contribute to the discussion, with the panel providing tailored, expert advice. The informative session was open to the public and the event was designed to make people aware of options to remain independent and active in a vibrant and thriving community. The event was targeted at families who have older relatives who may be looking for additional services

that support them. Assisted Living apartments, such as those at Inspired’s Durrants Village, offer the best of both worlds, as loved ones can receive extra help with their home, and dining, whilst still remaining independent and enjoying all the benefits of a later living community. Liam Stack, Village Manager at Durrants Village, commented: “Experience has shown us that many families spend time with their loved ones over the festive period and often identify that their parent or older relative might benefit from additional services in the future. Housekeeping and meal preparation are usually top of the list, however, retaining independence and being part of a supportive and active community whilst receiving this extra support is crucial to the vast majority of people. “At Inspired Villages, our ethos is centred around mental and physical wellbeing, and encouraging our residents to live younger for longer. As such, we very much enjoyed the discussion with Dr Dawn Harper and John Kennedy, on how this is achievable whilst receiving the vital support that many may need.” The Assisted Living apartments are ideal for those looking for the benefits of living within a supportive community, but with the freedom, privacy and independence of having their own apartment. Peace of mind comes with the knowledge that, should extra care be needed in the future, whether permanent or temporary, this can be privately arranged on a bespoke basis. A broad range of facilities and services are available at the village, with a strong focus on an active and supportive community spirit. Durrants Village is set amongst

30 acres of idyllic parkland in the hamlet of Faygate and close to Horsham. The village offers a total of 172 luxury retirement properties, comprising a mixture of two bedroom apartments and two and three bedroom cottages. Surrounded by beautiful West Sussex countryside, but also within easy reach of London, Durrants Village offers the best of both worlds for over 55s looking to make a smart downsizing move. The homes at Durrants Village centre around an on-site clubhouse that provides a range of country club-style facilities including a restaurant, bar, lounge, swimming pool, gym and library. Within the landscaped grounds there is also a croquet lawn, a lake complete with duck houses and a lake house for residents to enjoy. The latest phase of cottages at the village overlook the idyllic lake and each comes with a garden room that leads outdoors to a garden terrace with views over the lake. The latest phase of two bedroom apartments is now available at Durrants Village, with prices starting at £325,000. Prices for the new two and three bedroom cottages at the village start from £448,950. To rent an apartment, which is available as part of the Assisted Living package only, costs £590 per week for a one bedroom apartment and £600 per week for a two bedroom apartment. For more information about the homes available at Durrants Village and the new Assisted Living options, please contact the sales team on 01293 851 935, email sales.durrants@inspiredvillages. co.uk or visit www.inspiredvillages.co.uk/villages/durrantsvillage.

Sussex Premier League fixtures released Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter

The Sussex Premier League 2019 cricket fixtures have just been issued, release having been delayed from the customary November announcement. The season begins on Saturday May 4th, running without

break until Saturday August 31st, Horsham beginning their campaign with a home fixture against last year’s runner up Eastbourne, while reigning champions Roffey start with a visit to Brighton & Hove. As promised, this year Horsham and Roffey fixtures have reverted to the previous alternating pattern on a non-clashing

home and away basis, pleasing local cricket enthusiasts who like to attend a home Premier League match in the town each Saturday. All matches in the 2019 season will start at 11.30, with, as last year, half the fixtures – those at the beginning and end of the season – on a limited overs win basis. The much-savoured local derby

matches between our two local Premier League sides will be on Saturday June 1st, when Roffey visit Cricketfield Road and on Saturday August 3rd, when Horsham venture to the Innes Memorial Ground. This season – following the 2018 relegation of Ifield and Hastings - Three Bridges return to the Premiership, along with

debutants Mayfield. In the ECB National Royal London Club Championship (knock out cup) Horsham have been drawn against Brighton & Hove on Sunday April 28th, while Roffey have a first round bye. The fixtures for the Gray-Nicolls Sussex T20 Cup competition are expected shortly.

Last gasp goal enables Horsham to share points Saturday January 19 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 2 2 Slough Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was a game that Horsham had earmarked for a win – Slough are bottom of the table and Horsham had beaten them 3-1 in Berkshire in October. But, perhaps Slough are on the up – after 11 consecutive defeats, including 7-0 and 13-0 thrashings by the top two clubs, they finally opened their points scoring account by beating London Academicals the previous weekend – and in the end last Saturday Horsham were relieved to come away with a point from an equaliser in the dying seconds of the game. Horsham, though, promised much after sustained early pressure culminated with the Slough keeper parrying the ball to Zac Chinn, who made no mistake from close quarters. However, Slough responded with a slick short corner, which was hit into the top right corner of the goal following a rebound. Freddie Campbell then found the side netting of the Slough goal before two abortive Noah Chinn forays down the right preceded a Joey Humphreys backhander being pushed away for a short. Amid wave after wave of Horsham attacks the visiting keeper saved with an outstretched right foot, and although the score was 1-1 at the break, there might have been a considerable Horsham lead. The second half began in in-

creasingly gloomy conditions with persistent cold rain, but that did not deter Horsham from launching an immediate incursion, Peter Neave running down the left flank, but the resultant short corner was blocked. Slough then fired a shot across the Horsham goal, Joe Elgar subsequently rushing out to kick a threat clear, but he was unable to prevent the visitors from taking the lead from the spot when their well taken penalty crashed into the back board. After a period of Slough possession, roles were reversed, with Horsham earning a seemingly endless barrage of short corners, interspersed with a breakaway Slough affray hitting the upright. Another Horsham short followed, this time the woodwork denying the hosts, before, Sean Pearcy converted another set piece - taking his seasonal tally to 11 goals – Horsham snatching a point at the very death. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “That was the best passing hockey that we’ve played all season, but we still couldn’t find the net!” Match Coach Brian Humphreys added: “We had the ball at our mercy four times at close range but couldn’t get it in. In the last 15 minutes we could have won 5-2, but we just didn’t take our chances.” On Saturday Horsham, still tenth, have a tough trip to Buckinghamshire to take on third placed Wycombe (against whom they drew 4-4 at home in October). Meanwhile, Guildford remain top, one point ahead of Trojans, with Woking and Slough bringing up the rear.

Player Of The Match Mathieu Pecharman Ten try Horsham steamroller through to cup semi Saturday January 19 – Bob Rogers Cup Quarter Final Horsham 72 14 Brighton 2 Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter The weather was grim last Saturday – sepulchral gloom and freezing drizzle, but it did not deter Horsham from sweeping through to the semi final of the Bob Rogers (Sussex Senior) Cup. But, for the first quarter of an hour there was no hint of the mayhem that was to follow – until Declan Nwachukwu supplied Horsham new boy Mathieu Pecharman for the Frenchman to jink

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

In our district we are very fortunate to have some excellent sports clubs encompassing a wide range of activities, and the administration mostly involves dedicated volunteers putting in long unpaid hours for the benefit of members, supporters and visiting clubs. The volunteers deal with routine matters and emergencies, keeping the show on the road week in and week out. And, the recent floodlight failure at Gorings Mead has again brought out the best from the officials at the friendly Horsham YMCA Football Club, YM’s Tim Hewlett saying: “To resolve the problem, the only solution was to lay new electricity cables at the ground, and, as so often has been the case over the last 90 years during our much-cherished occupation

of our Gorings Mead ground, YM volunteers pitched in to undertake as much of the required works as possible, thus significantly reducing the cost to the club. In this case an 85 yard trench had to be dug to a depth of 450mm to accommodate the new cables to be fitted by Cato Electrical Services. This was a major project and on this occasion the heroes were our Membership Secretary Keith Holmes, Treasurer Alan Maguire, President and Groundsman Ron Moulding, and our trusty Gatemen, Barry and James Wright. And, thanks to their sterling efforts we are very pleased to say that the work was completed without major interruption to our schedule, and business as usual has resumed at the ground with fixtures proceeding as normal – in good time for our big match against Saltdean United this Saturday.”

his way home, ever reliable kicker Tom Johnson missed out on this occasion, but went on to notch up 22 personal points, starting with a penalty, which, after the evenly fought aperitif, heralded the opening of the floodgates, Pecharman and Johnson combining to increase Horsham’s lead. A Joe Wilde try, maximised by Johnson, was followed by a penalty, and a Kyle Fairs intercept try, which, with the conversion, gave Horsham a 32 nil advantage at the break. Within moments of the restart Jonny Whiting made valuable ground before off- loading to Jonny Goward to finish the job from close quarters. Although Brighton were under severe pressure they did manage to post a converted try, bringing the score to 39-7. Then, following a series of entertaining Horsham moves, the ball was played wide to Pecharman for his hat trick ahead of three more tries in quick succession, from Declan Nwachukwu, Wilde and Emmet O’Rahilly, Johnson’s boot lifting the score to 65-7 with time fast evaporating. Horsham, though, were not quite done, a pin point Jordan Bell kick to Pecharman was fed to Nwachukwu for him to power over the line, Johnson’s final kick taking the Green & Whites to 72 points. Brighton got over for their second try, but even with the conversion it was scant consolation. Horsham Head Coach Nick

Stocker was naturally delighted, saying: “A pleasing result, which maintains the momentum ahead of our big league match against Charlton Park at their ground on Saturday. Against Brighton we took the opportunity to rest a few players and adapted very well. There were some good performances all round with players putting their hands up for selection in the coming weeks, and, combined with our Lions team beating Crawley 1st team comfortably, the selection quandries as we approach important games will be interesting. Man of the Match was awarded to Mathieu Pecharman for his hat trick and all round performance. In his three appearances he has now scored five tries and with Declan Nwachukwu offers real threat out wide, which we continue to exploit. Next we have a real test of our season’s league aspirations with the tough away fixture against second placed Charlton Park (whom Horsham beat 24-20 at home in October).” Horsham have won the Bob Rogers Cup for the last five seasons, and their reward for seeing off Brighton is a tougher home semi final, against sixth in Horsham’s London SE2 League, Haywards Heath, on Saturday February 23rd. After their outstanding 46-19 win against Crawley 1sts, Horsham Lions XV have a home semi final versus Burgess Hill in the Sussex Shield on February 2nd

Fifth again, Broadbridge Heath extended their clean sheet run to four matches with a comfortable win over Little Common, who, after promotion into the Southern Combination, find themselves hovering just above the relegation zone. The game was marked by the return of Heath favourite, the vastly experienced Jamie Taylor, whose class was underlined by two well taken second half goals. 36 year old, Crawley born Taylor was with Heath from the age of 15, playing in the highly impressive youth team, then signing up for Horsham, where he scored goals for fun before becoming a professional with Dagenham & Redbridge. After Taylor’s seasons with other clubs, most recently Eastbourne Borough and Three Bridges, Heath are delighted to regain his services, as he joins other graduates of the club’s youth system con-

veyor belt, including Lee Carney, Martyn Flack, Ollie Moore, Jamie Robinson and Andy Waddingham, eight of the team against Common having been Heath colts. At the Leisure Centre Heath took early control of the game, although the visi-

tors might have drawn first blood, but for the intervention of Robinson. But, Heath were threatening with probing build ups and it took determined defending by keeper Crutwell and Common’s back line to keep the persistent home forwards at bay. But, Heath success seemed inevitable and it duly came two thirds of the way through the first half

when, after earlier disappointments, George Cousins lobbed Crutwell to get the ball into the vacant goal. Heath maintained the pressure, the score remaining 1-0 in their favour at the break. A succession of Heath corners featured in the restart and within five minutes Taylor, showing no sign of a prolonged injury induced lay off, put Heath further ahead after collecting Tom Howard Bold’s pin point supply and coolly slotting it past the advancing Crutwell. And, Heath’s superiority was promptly emphasised when Taylor latched onto Cousins’ supply to put the game well beyond Common’s reach, despite a changed format requiring Heath to be at their best to retain their advantage. Heath then also rang the changes and successfully closed the game down to run out very worthy winners. On Saturday Heath have a sterner test when current leaders Chichester City come to the Leisure Centre. Meanwhile, Loxwood, Arundel and Eastbourne United occupy the lower reaches of the table.

Saturday January 19 – The Bostik League – South East Division Phoenix Sports 1 0 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham have consistently punched above their weight this season, beating top clubs, both in the league and during their notable cup runs, but they have sometimes had disappointing results against clubs that, given their relative positions in the league, they might have been expected to beat. Such was the case at Barnehurst, in the London Borough

of Bexley, last Saturday, when a defensive error two thirds of the way through the game enabled Phoenix Sports to take the points with the single goal of the afternoon. Earlier in the season Horsham had beaten their hosts, but with little to choose between the sides on Saturday the game was decided by the finest of margins, and to rub salt in this was Phoenix’s first win from their last eight outings and both Haywards Heath and Whyteleafe lost, without Horsham taking advantage of those results. The low key match against Phoenix Sports sadly reflected the miserable weather, but Horsham

had the first opportunity, only for Rob O’Toole’s header to sail harmlessly over. An unrewarded Horsham corner followed, before Phoenix were also off target. The stalemate continued until just before half time, when Horsham were denied by their former keeper, Steve Phillips, who first pushed away Chris Smith’s effort and then bounced back to gather Lee Harding’s volley. O’Toole was then adjudged offside, depriving Horsham of the lead moments before the break. Horsham resumed purposefully, striving to shrug off the disappointing first half, and Steve Metcalf came close to opening

the Hornets’ account, but his blast went just wide. Another promising move followed, Jack Brivio and Smith combining to supply O’Toole, only for Phillips to keep Horsham at bay again. Horsham, though, looked more likely to score, but Phoenix defence held secure, until, in the 67th minute, a failed clearance allowed Teniola to break through to score their decisive goal. Horsham rang the changes – Tyrell Richardson-Brown and loanee Kieran Lavery coming on but, despite nine minutes of added time, Horsham’s subsequent attempts on goal were severely restricted as Phoenix ran down

the clock, with overdone timewasting bringing bookings to Duah-Kessie and Phillips. Horsham forfeit third spot to Ashford United, courtesy of them walloping bottom club Greenwich Borough 7- nil. On Saturday, bidding to get their play off aspirations back on track, Horsham return to their temporary Culver Road, Lancing home to welcome 11th in the table Ramsgate, whom they beat 2-0 in east Kent at the end of October. Meanwhile, Cray Wanderers are looking likely champions with 54 points – ten clear of current runner up Hastings United.

Horsham YMCA pleased to be back on the winning trail Saturday January 19 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Peacehaven & Telscombe 0 2 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After just one success from their previous six games, Horsham YMCA were delighted to return to winning ways, rebooting their play off challenge at Piddinghoe Avenue’s Sports Park last Saturday. And, YM started well, putting Peacehaven & Telscombe under immediate pressure, but the home defence, especially keeper

Alieu Secka, thwarted them, until the hosts came more into the game, creating unfulfilled chances. Following the goal-less first half, the second began with Peacehaven again setting up opportunities, but YM keeper Aaron Jeal pushed Edwards’ attempt away for a corner, which Elliott headed over the bar, before the onrushing Jeal safely negated another potential threat. Then, after Peacehaven were again off target, continuing YM thrusts earned a corner from the right, Guy Harding crashing in a volley to give YM the lead in the 66th minute. Both sides rang the changes, but neither scored,

until, right on normal full time with Peacehaven pressing hard to share the points, they were caught napping. Fully committed to attack, their corner was cleared by the YM defence up to Jack Hartley on the half way line, who set off on a solo run on the Peacehaven goal, only to be floored by Secka, earning the keeper a booking. Recovering to take the free kick, Hartley promptly put the ball in the net and although Peacehaven launched an immediate attack, thinking that they had reduced the deficit, their effort was ruled off side, much to the chagrin of their singing supporters, the game ending 2-0 in YM’s favour..

Elated YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “Peacehaven away is always a considerable challenge – they’re a good, fit young side, so we’re pleased with the result, and although we were forced to make changes again, it was great to have Ash Dugdale back from injury as our midfield engine. We’ve still got a few niggles – Tony Garrod has a tight hamstring and Dean Bown injured his back at Hassocks, so we were short of a striker at Peacehaven, giving chances to Jack Frankland and Jack Ryder, and although they both took knocks, we’re getting back towards full strength. This was a good game

of football, with the right ending for us, and with 14 matches still to play, we’re now looking to put a decent run together.” YM remain third with 49 points, with Chichester top on 57, shading Newhaven on the same total, but with a game in hand. On Saturday, YM return to Gorings Mead to welcome sixthplaced Saltdean United, in what is sure to be a competitive contest. Meanwhile, YM have said goodbye to forward Sam Schaaf, Peter Buckland saying: “Sam was with us for four years and he was reluctant to go, but work commitments have prevented him from training, so he has joined Eastbourne United, close to his home, and we wish him all the best.”
